The Haunting Gameplay

September 1931

A landlord, Mr Knott, has approached Larry with a job for his new PI company and Larry needs help. Arriving at a certain bookstore in Providence, early on a Monday Morning.

Karabekian looks up from the book he was reading (a treatise on the esoteric practices of certain secret societies in ancien Greece) and slowly fixes Larry with a withering gaze. Apparently, in the intervening months since the events in Gardiner's flat, the man has gotten it into his head to become a private investigator and Karabekian has found himself recruited as some sort of consultant/confidante without his consent. As a result, these unexpected (and frankly, often bothersome and unwanted) visits have become more and more frequent.

To be fair, each new case Larry has brought has at the very least afforded Karabekian some measure of diversion. He has always had an insatiable curiousity (both a blessing and a curse) and perhaps Mister Getz recognized this early on. Karabekian has had a particularly vexing week, specially after the debacle at the University. Perhaps a distraction is exactly what he needs.

Karabekian closes the book and smiles politely. "Good day to you, Mister Getz. What have you gotten us into this time?"
Mar 1, 2017 2:00 am
"A man has come to me asking if we'd get to the bottom of why he can't keep renters. Something about odd happenings in the house..." Larry continues passing forward the information and slaps $5 down on the table. "Some up front money... and don't give me that smug look, it makes you look dull witted!
Mar 1, 2017 4:40 am
"Smug? I wouldn't dream of it." Karabekian looks down his nose at the money. "Might not this landlord have been better served employing an exterminator?"

Karabekian seems to get over himself and his expression changes. "Odd happenings, did you say?" After what they experienced together three months ago he knows none of those involved would ever use the word 'odd' lightly ever again.

After explaining the job, both think it might be a good idea to enlist that crotchety old German. Larry knows he's been down since he lost his Macaw and this might be a good distraction. Your landlord might also be interested in a road trip.
Mar 3, 2017 2:23 am
"Shall we fetch our Confederates then?" Karabekian takes the $5 note. "I trust you have more of these to entice them with. I doubt they are afflicted by the same curiosity as you or I." The book dealer then flips the door sign to "Closed" locks up the shop and prepares to head for the boarding house.
Mar 4, 2017 1:39 am
I'll give the German a five, but the landlord already takes enough of my money! I'll give him a dollar.
Mar 4, 2017 1:47 am
Karabekian chuckles. "I won't tell if you won't." he claps a hat onto his head and picks up a walking cane. The man can clearly walk fine without the stick so clearly it's a mere affectation. "Let's go."
Mar 4, 2017 9:04 am
Back at the apartments

Valentin hears a rapping on his door and the voice of the business associate calling.
Mar 4, 2017 9:24 am
At first there is silence then a harsh voice "Gehen Sie weg! I already told you damn reporters I don't know anything about the Gardiner fellow."
Mar 4, 2017 3:30 pm
"Guten Tag alten Mann. Why don't you open the door for your housemates and we can have a chat!"
Mar 5, 2017 1:16 am
More silence greets you before some shuffling around is heard behind the door. You hear nine different deadbolts unlocking before the door swings slightly open, stopped by a chain lock. Valentin pokes his head through the gap "Then chat." he says grumpily.
Mar 5, 2017 6:29 pm
"I have a job and could use a solid head like yours on my team. There is some money to be earned, and maybe we can find a new companion for you to boot, I'm offering you 5 times what I'll give anyone not already on board to help out, maybe more if we break the case." Larry holds out the five dollar bill, just out of reach of the closed door's crack.
Mar 5, 2017 7:22 pm
The door slams shut...The sound of a chain lock can be heard, seconds later, followed by the door swinging open slightly, hiding the right of his body. "And what does this job entail?"
Mar 5, 2017 7:44 pm
"A man has come to me asking if we'd get to the bottom of why he can't keep renters. Something about odd happenings in the house..." Larry gives him the rest of the details too.
Mar 5, 2017 7:57 pm
Valentin holds out his left hand "No psychotic people or ungodly rituals?"

After receiving the money, Valentin slams the door again, returning back into his apartment; rustling can be heard behind the door. He opens the door, a minute later, now wearing a duffle bag that hangs off his back.
Mar 5, 2017 8:57 pm
"Glad to have you onboard. Now let's go talk to the landlord, we need a scapegoat if things go wrong right?" Larry winks at the old German.
Mar 5, 2017 10:05 pm
As it happens, little Tommy is sitting halfway up the stairs to the upperfloor where he and his dad live, flipping through baseball cards and chewing gum.
"Afternoon Fellers!" he smiles cheerily. None of the horror that happened earlier in the year has touched the boy. He was whisked away to a family friend while the clean up happened and knows nothing of what occurred.
Mar 5, 2017 11:23 pm
"Hey Tommy! Do you know where your dad is?" Larry asks as he plays with a quarter in his hands.

Karabekian arches an eyebrow. He would never have suspected the landlord to be a man of culture. But then again, these paintings would no doubt turn out to be nothing but childish smears on canvas. Or worse: barbaric reproductions of the classics. Sighing, he follows Getz upstairs.

I just want to point out, the landlord isn't actually the guy who owns the flats, he manages the estate on behalf of the owner, who is an elderly lady. So the money he collects doesn't go to him. He is more of a grounds keeper then what we would call a landlord today, he certainly doesn't fix your rates or earn a cut of them. He's an employee of the flats. Most of our interactions would be him fixing your broken stuff so I don't see where all the flack is coming from...

Karabekian has no issue with the rent or anything like that. His condescension comes from his being generally a cultural snob. In other words, he will condescend exactly the same way towards Getz & Kreutzwald. I must point out, however, that he's generally a nice guy, it's just that he feels intellectually superior and sometimes that comes bubbling up to the surface.

@Lunitar: You would know this, the boarding house is named for its owner, and I vaguely remember that Ma Shanks lives here.

@Jabes: The point was more for all the flack Marc was getting for being 'the guy who takes all your money.' I'm sure you can hate Marc for any number of other reasons.
Mar 6, 2017 5:50 am
Karabekian knocks at Marc's door. He clears his throat. "Mister Armando, it's Karabekian. Getz and Kreutzwald are here as well."
Mar 6, 2017 6:05 am
From beyond the door you hear Marc shout, It's open. Marc is currently in the process of taking down a series of synchromistic paintings and replasing them with a collection of country side paintings of a tonalistic style. Someone with an artistic mind would notice a variety of different artists in the collection. A pair of Thekla Larks sit on the table eating from a small bowl of seeds, they make know attempt to leave by both the open window or the door. Gentlemen what can I do for you? I haven't noticed any building wide problems...
Mar 6, 2017 7:08 am
Karabekian opens the door and enters. He's immediately taken by the modest but tasteful art collection and realizes there's more to this man than any of them could have ever guessed. "Good day to you, Mister Armando. We hope we haven't come at an inopportune time. Mister Getz here has a proposal that might interest you."
Mar 7, 2017 1:11 am
"Marc, how have you been, wow your kid is quite the artist." Larry says, just trying to get a laugh, "Tis true, I'd like to offer you a proposal, I have a job in need of some extra help and thought you might like to tag along. We might be able to even find a painting or two in the basement just waiting to see the light of day. I've got...." Larry looks around and rethinks his pay. It appears he has a richer taste than he thought, "a five spot for you to help. A landlord has some issues...."

Larry explains the rest of the details.

Everyone, if you haven't already in the development phase (inbetween scenarios) you can make a roll against Luck and if you roll higher than your current score, add 1d10. You can exceed your initial Luck but no more than 99
Mar 7, 2017 11:42 am
OOC:
I recon that might be a standing arrangement. So if Marc isn't home Tommy just pops over there. Still doesn't change the fact that Marc doesn't like leaving Tommy...

Also sorry about all the switching of spelling I've been doing with the names. It's not really change how they would sound out loud, but I keep flipping around with how they would actually spell their names (though I have more or less settled on Marc).

Mar 13, 2017 10:31 pm
The uncomfortable drive to Boston from Providence takes just over three hours and you are all eager to stretch your legs by the end of the trip. Opting to go straight to the house, Larry pulls up at the Old Corbitt Place.

The brick building is overshadowed by taller newer office buildings on either side. The house fronts the street. In the rear are overgrown plantings and a half-collapsed arbor. Access to the rear exists either side of the residence.

Studying the house, the observer is impressed by the way the house seems to withdraw into the shadows cast by the flanking buildings and how the blank curtained windows hide all understanding of what lies within.
Mar 14, 2017 2:42 am

Karabekian doffs his hat as he follows Larry inside.
Mar 18, 2017 10:43 pm
Larry unlocks to door and swings it open to a corridor lined with an ugly patterned carpet. To the right a pair of solid oak wooden doors and a single door on the left. There's a very musty smell in the air. A number of deadbolts seem to have been added to the front door fairly recently.

Opening wide the double doors, Larry reveals a large living room containing conventional furnishings, a radio, couch, stuffed chairs and shelves laden with gewgaws. You cannot help but noticed the unusual quantities of crosses, images of the Virgin and other Cathelic artefacts. The house is quiet though the occaisional floorboard creaks as you enter.

A window overlooks the front of the property and two smaller ones to the side, all appear to have been nailed shut from the inside. An opening in east wall leads to another room further in the house.
Mar 19, 2017 12:47 pm
"Shall we continue?" Larry goes to the east opening.
Mar 20, 2017 6:11 am
"After you." Karabekian says to Marc and Valentin with a gesture.
Mar 21, 2017 1:08 am
Larry walks right on in.
Mar 21, 2017 3:50 pm
Stepping through the archway, Larry finds a dining room, complete with long mahogany table, a built in sideboard and seven chairs. Three places are set and unused. Scraps of rice soup rot in a tureen, the smell of rotting food assaults the nostrils.

Suddenly from above are three solid thumps.
Mar 21, 2017 4:03 pm
Having entered the dining room last, Karabekian wrinkles his nose at the smell, then startles at the humps. "Odd goings-on, did you say?"
Mar 22, 2017 12:09 am
"I was told we'd be alone."
Mar 22, 2017 12:16 am
At the three bumps, Valentin swings his duffel bag forward so its contents are easily accessible.
Mar 24, 2017 9:41 pm
Larry leads on through another archway into a conventional kitchen, with icebox, wood-fed stove and oven, plus a meagre larder. Some of the food stuffs may be edible - there is canned soup and meat, rice kernals, several pastas and a few bottles of homemade wine. The produce which has not spoilt has been eaten by rats, judging by the spoor left behind.

A staircase here leads to the basement and a door leads back into the main corridor. Three more thumps come from overhead, louder this time.
Mar 25, 2017 2:07 am
"Sounds like we need to find the stairs up."
Mar 25, 2017 2:26 am
Do we? Sounds like we should get pest control in and go home...
Mar 26, 2017 3:23 pm
"I want paid, and my curiosity is peaked." Larry heads out to the main corridor and opens the door that they left undisturbed.
Mar 26, 2017 8:52 pm
http://i.imgur.com/bjopYsU.jpg

Returning to the corridor entrance, Larry sees a staircase off to the right and three doors opposite the rooms just investigated. Returning to the first door (Room 1) he opens it to find a room filled with boxes and junk, such as rusted water tanks and old bicycles. At the far end of the room is a cupboard, boarded up.
Mar 27, 2017 12:22 am
Valentin makes his way to the base of the stairs that lead to the upper floor, his hand reaches into his duffel bag. "If there's any squatters up there! I suggest you come out slowly with your hands up! I have no patience for the undead!" he calls up.
Mar 27, 2017 6:05 am
Valentin's shout echoes around the house. The thumping noise has now stopped.
Mar 27, 2017 6:12 am
Karabekian arches an eyebrow.
Mar 27, 2017 9:02 pm
Larry tries to open the cupboard.
Mar 28, 2017 8:40 am
Larry finds a rusty claw hammer and wrenches off the boards. Three bound books are found within, all diaries of one W.Corbitt, the address in the flyleaf indicating he was a former inhabitant of this house.
The Corbitt Diaries are in English though some of it is oddly phrased.
OOC:
Reading will require two full days though an initial read through will take about half an hour.
Mar 29, 2017 11:50 pm
Larry pockets the books, feeling upstairs may need their attention first. He heads up the stairs.
Mar 30, 2017 6:02 am
Karabekian follows close behind.
Mar 30, 2017 4:21 pm
Heading up the creaking staircase to a darkened corridor, the windows here on the right are filthy. Three doors stand ahead of you at intervals along the left hand wall.
Mar 31, 2017 12:10 am
Larry slams his hand hard on the wall and listens for movement or gasps.
Mar 31, 2017 6:32 am
The slam on the hardwood wall echoes around the corridor but there is no responding sound.
Mar 31, 2017 6:38 am
Karabekian points to the first door on the left. Pausing only a moment to make sure Larry is ready, he turns the knob and swings the door open.
Mar 31, 2017 7:33 pm
As Karabekian goes casually for the knob and jumps back as it suddenly starts to rattle violently. This goes on for several seconds then stops.
Mar 31, 2017 7:35 pm
Karabekian turns to Getz. "What do you make of it?"
Apr 1, 2017 3:16 pm
"Are you hurt and need help?" Larry shouts into the door with the shaking knob.

The group enters a small but tastfully decorated doctor's practice. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from the Great War. The room contains a couch and several oak chairs most of which are unoccupied. The furniture looks simple but comfortable. You see two gentlemen dressed in military uniforms sitting two of the chairs. A middle aged blonde woman greets you as you enter Good day gentlemen and then upon seeing the condition of the injured gentlemen she immediately rises and helps you move him towards the sofa.

Then she knocks on a door and enters a second room.
By all means show them in. You hear the words echo from the open door.

Dr. Harper will see you now she says and you enter the doctors office.

Dr. Harper is in his mid thirties and has a slightly disheveld look to him but he has a kind disposition and greets you warmly.
What seems to be... Luis? Is that you? What happened to you? No never mind that now you can fill me in later. My name is James Harper but my friends call me 'Captain'. Now let's have a look at you.

He expertly positions and treats your wounds. You get the feeling that he is quite the expert in first aid and that he has done this many times before.

What is left of the old church stands at the end of a crooked, dingy street. The ruins are so weathered and overgrown with greenery that the grey stone rubble seems more like natural stone than former walls and foundation. You pass a slumping wall bearing white-painted symbols, apparently freshly swabbed - three Y's arranged in a triangle so that the top elements of each Y touch the other two Y's. In the center, so created, is painted a staring eye.

Sep 4, 2017 7:09 pm
Following Larry, Karabekian looks for the stairs down to the basement.
Sep 4, 2017 8:25 pm
Larry leads the way back to the kitchen and the cellar door leading down to the basement you found yesterday. The bumping you heard then, that led you upstairs can no longer be heard.

The door to the basement has a lock and three bolts and can be opened from this side only. Unlocking it, Larry opens it gingerly, revealing stairs in poor repair, leading to the floor below. A musty smell hits your senses like a freight train. A light switch sits at the top of the stairs, which Larry flips on and off a few times but the electric lightbulb halfway down the stairs does not come on. The walls are lined with closely fitting boards.

Sep 6, 2017 9:16 am

Not waiting for light, Marc drives the crowbar into the wall and starts wrenching strips of wood, with a loud cracking sound. Larry instinctively shines the light his way and within a couple minutes, he has uncovered an alcove with a storage bin, presumably once used for the storage of coal.

Rules on carrying

Marc is actually quite large (Siz 80). This means that carrying him would be a Hard strength check (Half Karabekian's Strength, 30%)

However if Marc remains conscious, no roll should be required, so we'll wait for that CON roll.

Additional help will allow that person's strength to reduce the weight and therefore difficulty (So Larry's Strength of 50 would bring it down the Size down to 30, making it a regular difficulty for Karabekian)

On the back the house, Karabekian tries to speed, but ends up hitting traffic. The journey takes twenty times and en route, he explains to the Dr what to expect, gun shot wound and stab wound.

Reaching the house everyone gets out, "Lead the way," says Harper, grimly.

The house is silent as the three men enter, bar gentle singing from the basement. The cellar is still in darkness but as Karabekian starts coming down the cellar stairs, Larry flicks on his flashlight again and rats scatter about.

Marc is in a bad way and Harper checks him for signs of life, "Breathing. Just about. What happened?"

Helping the two injured men up the stairs in near darkness is no easy task but you manage it and after bundling them into the car, you return to the safety of town, leaving the horrors of the house behind, as you drive away you think you hear a distant triumphant cackle. Dec 6, 2017 4:55 pm
Larry will read every page and try to take in all of the Corbitt diaries and then shares it with Lukas to get his opinion.

He also looks over the attack knife to see if it holds any magic or was just a weapon for some vessel to use.

Larry would rest until his hp is full, his major wound was gone after the first die roll.

To recap what you've learned so far...

Executor of the will: Rev Michael Thomas, Pastor of the Chapel of Contemplation and Church of Our Lord Granter of Secrets.

Church was closed 1912

On investigation, Church appeared to have suffered a fire. Trapped in the basement, 2 skeletons in silk robes

Found there, a tome entitled Liber Ivonis, occult in nature and written in Latin. Book mostly rotten

Also in the church, a journal with an entry stating Walter Corbitt was buried in the basement of his house "In accordance with the wishes of that one who waits in the dark"

The House was built in 1835 by a prosperous merchant. He immediately fell ill and sold it to Mr Walter Corbitt esq.

In 1852 Corbitt was sued by neighbours forcing him to leave the area.

Flailing comically, Lukas stumbles down the stairs and lands at the bottom on both feet at the foot of stairs. The light bulb that previous wasn’t working flickers on lighting the cellar. Rats scatter revealing the junk and remains of the false wooden wall Marc tore down.

Then blood starts to pour down the cellar walls...
Jan 28, 2018 3:18 pm
Lukas grabs his pendant...looking around. He looks at his companions. Do we know what is beyond that false wall?
Jan 29, 2018 2:02 am
"Luis is that your blood? Or are the walls bleeding?"
Jan 29, 2018 7:41 am

"Well, looks like she's up to her old tricks. We are back house, what dirty tricks are you going to pull this time?"
Feb 4, 2018 6:41 pm
Lukas backs away from the walls a little. Then looks over at Larry...Does the house communicate to whoever is in it?
Feb 5, 2018 12:01 am
If you consider violence communication, then yes.
Feb 5, 2018 1:08 am
The blood slows to a gentle trickle. Then there’s a familiar banging upstairs.
Feb 6, 2018 1:23 am
"Sounds like someone is getting lucky upstairs again!" Larry moves over to the wall where we started removing the boards and peers in.
Feb 6, 2018 7:45 am
Pointing his torchlight inside, Larry looks into the crawlspace that had previous been filled with rats. A few more cower in the corners, squeaking as the light hits them but not moving. Beyond the torn out boards is another wall, also made from solid planks of wood, not the natural stone of the rest of the cellar's outer walls. Scratched into the wood in irregular scratchy letters are the words:

"Chapel of Contemplation"

Feb 22, 2018 3:19 am
Lukas joins in with prying the boards off and taking down the wall.
Feb 22, 2018 10:31 am
Larry steps back into the crawl space, and wielding the crowbar Marc used, tears down the boards of the inner wall. Lukas assists while Karabekian watches from a safe distance, providing light.

Beyond is another room and lying motionless and seemingly dead on a pallet in the centre of the room is a drawn, wooden-looking, wizened figure of some six feet, skinny and naked., with ghastly wide-flaring saucerlike eyes and a nose like a knife blade. Some sort of chain rests around his neck. He has lost all hair and his shrunken gums make his teeth look very long. From him comes a sharp, sweet, churning scent, like rotten corn.

The floor is earthen and there is a table in the southwest corner with some curled papers on it.

Feb 23, 2018 12:36 am
Larry cautiously walks over to the table, keeping an eye on the figure the whole time.
Feb 24, 2018 12:20 am
Lukas stares at the corpse holding his pendant. How long ago was he supposed to have been buried? he asks as he moves across to the table with Larry.
Feb 24, 2018 1:16 am
Larry reaches the table and at first glance, the papers appear to be some kind of horoscope.
Feb 24, 2018 5:13 pm
Larry shuffles through to see what he can find, turning his full concentration on it since others are next to him.
Feb 24, 2018 9:07 pm
As soon as Larry touches the papers, they crumble to a fine dust.
Feb 26, 2018 3:53 am
Still looking at the body, Lukas calls over to Larry Find anything?
Feb 27, 2018 12:46 am
Larry looks horrified for a second and hen composes himself and looks over his shoulder, "Nothing yet, just some dust."

He continues to check the table.
