re-winding: Nekurr replies to Mengus' question "A bit too warm for my taste really". He then points to the monk entering by the side door as to make sure Mengus notices it as well. "So, do you have any way you'd prefer to do this?"
OOC:
I'll have to rethink my post but I'll first hear what Mengus as to say after his roll ;)

Barvek explains to Hildar as his short legs move in a quick rhythm, "All right, so I have only been out of the guard for about five years. I should still have a few contacts there. We'll talk to them and see if they'll give us the story. Maybe we can even convince them to let us see the official report." He pauses with a welcoming look, "I am open to any suggestions though."
OOC:
Sounds like a Charm check with a boost for your former service and a second for Hildar's help. However, if you want to try to pull rank on someone and play it that way, we can go Leadership instead; same boosts, but add a setback to represent the fact that you're retired. Which approach would you prefer?

Keep in mind: Doing it with the dice essentially means we leave it to chance whether your former service makes a difference. If you would prefer, you can drop a Story Point and say you recognize the person at the desk as an old friend. In that case, you avoid the roll altogether. Totally up to you. The Story Point pool is currently 6/1 in the PCs' favor.

Despite his protests, Mengus knows a thing or two about St. Durvin's Cathedral. Some nobody off the street might assume that the cathedral's small cadre of scribes might be the ones who would keep such records. But in his studies, Mengus has learned that most medium- or large-sized cathedrals such as this one appoint one of the priests to be the church treasurer. If there were a land transfer sometime in the past, the treasurer is the person to ask about it.
OOC:
Please remember to propose uses for any advantages or triumphs you roll. You have 1 advantage to spend. What do you want to do with it, Mengus? You can get a small side benefit from your roll. For instance, maybe you recall a potentially useful fact about St. Durvin (the deity). Or maybe you remember that you have some small connection to the treasurer that might give you a boost die on a social check against them.

With this information, are you two planning to ask nicely (Charm)? Or do you want to use another strategy (like Coercion, or Leadership with Nekurr playing up his own priesthood, or Negotiation?

somebox says:
"Yes. Beggars usually want money upfront. Yes and depending on the shop. Taverns are based on the patrons. To you absolutely."
Nera answers his questions sequentially, using expressive head-shakes and body language as she considers each query.

"You just need to know who has connections, who does business with who, who can gather information, who you can go to for that info without taking a risk. We'll probably start with hobos and try a shop or two, or maybe we should..." Nera does her best to educate and reassure Tronus, already prowling for an informant.
OOC:
I will take that setback. With that advantage perhaps Nera can find someone quickly and witness some buffoon making a textbook mistake which she will can point out to Tronus?
OOC:
Sounds good for the advantages!
As Nera and Tronus discuss where to go, a horse-drawn carriage passes through the gate from the Middle City. The filigree of its craftsmanship and the barding of the horses suggest that whatever occupants are inside are not from the Lower City. Nera and Tronus barely dodge out of the way as the carriage plows through a mud puddle, splattering brown goo over anyone nearby. But then the carriage slows to a stop near the front of a quaint wooden shop selling lanterns. The curtain on the side parts, and a dainty hand extends with a bag of coin. A dirty-looking man in torn breeches takes the coin and hands over a bundle of something.

"You there! Stop!" Suddenly, two guards from the gate nearby are galloping toward the carriage. The driver whips the reins hard, and the horses he's driving take off toward the East Gate and out of town. The guards continue in pursuit, leaving the area unserveilled for the moment.

A rookie mistake, Nera knows: Whoever that was, they didn't belong here, so the guards had their eyes on them. She also recognizes the person the noble--or whoever it was--was buying from: a two-bit fence who goes by the street name "Gorzo the Bold." If anyone knows about a recently burglary, he's as likely as any.
OOC:
Let me know how you plan to approach Gorzo (if you indeed do).

Sure thing.

Mengus also knows that the Church of Saint Durvin has some connection to the Priests of Kellos, but he can't remember exactly what it is. However, the Order of Saint Durvin is rumored to be a bit jealous of the Order of Kellos, since Kellos is by far a more popular deity across Terrinoth.

"I didn't catch the crest on the carriage did you? Well too late now that was too quick, so with his pants he's not the type to run off unless his bum come falling out of them breeches. If there's a runner I'll leave it to you to follow the coin." Tronus states turning and walking towards the man.
OOC:
Assuming Nera would have told him the ins and out of what just happened.
"Hello sir, my associate was letting me know how one does business in this area of town and you seem to be someone with a good vantage and lay of the land. If there's something to eat close like a stall close by I'll treat you if you explain to us a few things. Also I think being here if they come back to question you isn't the best of ideas considering that." Tronus explains nodding towards the bag.

OOC:
Beautiful. I'm going to use your post, Remnant, to explain to our newer players how Genesys uses Motivations. All characters have these, both short-term and long-term goals or traits that drive them. In this case, Tronus has guessed that the fence will probably want to hide out for a bit (a short-term desire, but a strong one), so offering to take him to an eatery is playing to that motivation. Tronus will thus get two boost dice on his first social check to influence the illicit merchant. (Desires and Fears grant two boosts each; playing to Strengths and Flaws grants one each).

(So, for those of you at the cathedral, the fact that the Priests of Saint Durvin feel inferior to the Priests of Kellos COULD be useful to you in a similar way. I leave it to you to figure out how you might work that into your own interaction with the treasurer!)

Tronus's approach sounds like a Charm check. Let's say in this case the difficulty is Average upgraded once (RP), but you get two boosts (B) since it will let him lie low for a bit. If Nera pipes in with some further incentive for the guy, that's worth a second boost. You also get a setback (Black) since he doesn't know either of you, so he doesn't totally trust you. Sum: BB(B for Nera) + RP + Bl

For the benefit of those of you learning the system, the difficulty here goes from Average (PP) to Average upgraded once (Red + Purple) because the fence has a Presence of 2 and 1 rank in Cool. When you roll a social check against someone, your difficulty is set by their own skills to resist you. In this case, Charm is resisted by Cool.

(These long GM rules explanations will fade as we keep playing! I just want to make sure those of you new to the system understand why you're rolling the dice you're rolling.)

Nera wants to stop Tronus, to step in and say he's gone mad, but she simply can't. It would be rude, and she needs to understand how he approaches a situation. Not very subtle, but at the same time he had a fair point or two in his speech.

"If you fear trouble we'll keep you safe from harm, these aren't just for show." She briefly looks to their own weapons, a display of their seriousness.

"Right! Shall we go in Mengus? Let's see if we can find ourselves something that explain how the Dribbages got themselves a graveyard." Leaving the suggestion for Mengus to pick on, Nekurr enters the cathedral.

"Kellos you say?" Nekkur searches for the church treasurer, nicely asking around for indications.
OOC:
Since steef's roll was with help, I'm assuming it is shared knowledge now. If nothing happens, then we're up with the treasure guy!
"Good morning brother." Nekurr looks around with an impressed expression as he introduces himself to the treasurer. "I'm Nekurr, priest of Fortuna, it is nice to meet a fellow man of faith." He greets the other cleric with an acknowledging smile, before explaining the purpose of their visit.

"Lady Argus asked me and my friend here, Mengus, to check on some land transfers and property records. Unlucky, some issues were raised over the inheritance of the property where St. Durvin's graveyard stands. Nothing serious really... We were hoping we'd be luck enough to find the right signatures in some documents here"

Still looking impressed, he stops to make a quick praise "This place is immaculate! I recently paid a visit to the Priests of Kellos and, let me tell you, they aren't half as dedicated as you. Have you visited their place?"

[ +- ] Gorzo the Bold
Gorzo the Bold looks you both over with a scowl. But then he nods and says, "I could eat." He gathers up his things and begins moving toward the south edge of town, zigzagging through the streets and looking frequently to the top of the wall between the Lower and Middle Cities -- no doubt looking for guards on patrol. Try as you might, he refuses to talk until you've gotten to his choice restaurant. Likewise, he refuses to say where he's headed. At last, you arrive at his desired eatery. You recognize the place as the only halfway respectable tavern within a mile, a place called Ferrick's Inn.

Once your food arrives, he takes a long gulp of ale and asks, "So what's this about?"
OOC:
1 threat = the tavern is quite far from anywhere you want to be, so it adds about fifteen minutes to the time it will take you to get out of the Lower City and to your next destination. The other 1 threat is that the tavern he brought you to is more expensive than most, so the prices are about 50% higher than standard. That is 3 silvers for his meal, 2 silver for his ale. Triple these prices if you two want to eat, too, as it is actually lunchtime by now.

We don't need to fully RP this scene, since we're just doing background investigation at this point. So let's say your 4 successes allow you to ask 4 questions. Maybe each of you can pose a single question, then a single follow up once I give you his replies?

[ +- ] Gaerros Bargretor
A kindly old monk informs you that the treasurer is called Gaerros Bargretor. The monk shows you to Bargretor's office, high in the cathedral's main tower, nearly at the top. This high up, a cool breeze wafts through, making this perhaps the most comfortable spot in the cathedral. The man inside looks young, but his features suggest elven heritage that belies his actual age. He listens politely to your introduction and pauses for a moment, eyeing you up and down.

"Well," he finally says. "You don't look like a priest." But at the mention of his office, you notice him crack a smile. "I'm glad you noticed the office. I find a messy office leads to a messy worker. Saint Durvin always understood that, which is why Kellos couldn't have overcome the Second Darkness without his help. As you no doubt know. Brother." You detect a slight sneer. "So you say you're here about the cemetery? On the old Dribbage property? Tell me that Vizeron Dribbage isn't trying to extort money out of the church yet again!"
OOC:
So, first -- thanks for the detailed setup of how you're approaching the guy. Some of that is going to play into what will probably be a Charm check. However, you've stumbled into some backstory here, so it's not time for the check just yet. I want to give you a chance to explain the situation a bit further (or lie about it if you prefer), since he seems to recognize the property you asked about, perhaps more intimately than you assumed he would.

As for the Story Point, I'll leave it up to you if you want to keep it for your next check. In a table-top game, you could have asked me to describe the office and then used my description in some way to play to his inferiority complex vs. the priests of Kellos. (Incidentally, the Cathedral of Kellos is in Vynelvale, another city.) For instance, if I'd described it as cluttered with books, you could have said, "Wow! Look at all these books! I've always loved how the priests of Saint Durvin value knowledge so much more than the Priests of Kellos!" In other words -- if you keep the Story Point, I'll let you upgrade your check, but it's not necessary for such a small narrative detail, since you could have spun any old description to fit your needs.
