Thick shadows press in around the party as they travel through tunnels far beneath the earth. A long way they have come, and with much farther to go.

A sudden trembling shakes the ground, and the tunnel about them collapses. Heavy rocks rain down about the companions as they tumble away into darker paths...
OOC:
Go ahead and make Dexterity saves to see how well you fare! DC 13, or you take 5 bludgeoning damage. Save for none.
The rumbling stops. The air is thick with choking dust, but only those with the gift of darkvision can see it - the tunnel ahead and behind is sealed with fallen stone, but a yawning hole has opened off to one side. The path they previously traveled has closed, but it seems that a new way has appeared.

The slow drip of falling water beckons the companions onward...
Jan 28, 2020 7:04 am
Despite his heavy armor, Corunir dodges the falling rocks with the alacrity and agility of a cat. "Is everyone alright?"

[ +- ] Unice "Snakebluff" Peckham

Unice' mind is far away at home, thinking about her childhood, when suddenly the tunnel collapses. Because of that, she isn't fast enough to effectively dodge, so a rock of the size of an apple hits her forehead.
Stupid Snakebluff! she thinks to herself as the headache spreads from the point of impact. Shouldn't think about the past. The Oath forbids it. She feels like she deserves this for breaking the tenets of sobriety and vigilance she has sworn to uphold.
She then turns toward the other paladin. Yes, I am fine. she answers, rubbing her forehead.

Aldrusian - I figured about half the party would fail. But I didn't expect the poor owl familiar! In any case, I promise not to attack the party with rabid horses in this adventure!
With the exception of the gnome in their ranks, the companions find themselves utterly blind to their surroundings. While his allies stumble about in the dark, voices echoing in the stale air, Zanzur notices a small stream of water flowing from the new opening into the collapsed passage of tunnel. As they adjust to their new surroundings, the heroes find that the water beneath their feet is rising ever so slowly.
OOC:
So it's totally dark. We'll assume that the party has standard adventuring gear, so torches are an option if you want light. If the party provides no light source, they probably want Zanzur to guide them forward.
Jan 29, 2020 6:11 am
*with the darkness settling, Andras struggled to find his tinderbox before grasping it and starting an attempt to light a torch*
"Come on...There."
*The Torch bristles to life, giving its light to the area. His longbow has been put away and has been replaced with one of two shortswords*

The flickering light of Andras' torch sends the darkness fleeing. The new passageway before them runs perhaps twenty feet, and then divides into two paths.

One leads left. The other, right.
Jan 29, 2020 4:41 pm
"Well, uh... this rising water is a concern," Zanzur says. The fact that he is the shortest, and would be the first to drown is not lost on him.
Jan 29, 2020 5:45 pm
"The peoples of my land always keep their most valuable treasure in the leftmost longhouses, so I think that left path would be best." Ziggy explains after squinting off the sudden torchlight and taking in these new surroundings.

"But, whichever way is less flooded will do. Fire & Water are not the best of friends." he says with a knowing wink towards Zanzur

Corunir places a gauntleted hand gently on his wounded companions' shoulders to ease their hurts. Then, he draws "Valor," his longsword as he speaks, "Come, my friends! Glory awaits!" With that, he leads the way in the direction Ziggy has indicated.
OOC:
Lay On Hands 5 hit points each for Duren, Zanzur, and Tip.
Jan 29, 2020 8:37 pm
Duren covers his eyes when he hears the striking of stone on steel and opens them slowly when he smells the burning torch. Not saying anything he looks around at their new passageway and watches the flow of water to gauge its speed and depth. Once the group moving Duren limps forward with a grimace on his face and his mace as hand.
Jan 29, 2020 10:33 pm
The walls of both tunnels shine with slick wetness as water trickles down them from above. From the look of things, the water level might rise by as much as a foot within the hour.

The party moves down the left tunnel, with Corunir at the lead. Splashes beneath their toes are a constant reminder of the danger that threatens them. Should these tunnels fill with water... Then the light from Andras' torch falls on oddly flat ground ahead; walls and floor of worked stone. What craftsmanship or masonry that might have given a clue as to the builders of such a place appear worn long ago by time and ruin. On the far side of the room, a connecting hallway stretches into darkness.

As the party inspects this strange room forgotten by time, Duren notices something move on the ceiling. Not water such as runs down the walls, but something thicker. Darker... Two large clumps of slime fall from above, their squirming masses splatting to the wet floor and wriggling towards the nearest companions!

The two rippling gray oozes have indistinct forms, but surge hungrily towards the closest targets - Corunir and Snakebluff!
OOC:
I've got a neat little initiative tracker that I rolled the oozes' initiatives in. I'll probably only update the tracker (with hp and stuff) at the top of each round, but for the most part you should be able to see on your own if your attacks hit and then narrate appropriately. I also prefer it when players announce at the end of their post how much damage they deal to whom, as well as the damage type. I may also add whimsical interjections between peoples' turns, but when you're up next in line just go for it.

And speaking of confusion, I'll clear another couple of things up for everyone: I'll put Ziggurd where he should be in the initiative order instead of at the end. Also, according to the initiative tracker it should be Zanzur (Campeador) who goes first! And then Duren, and then Snakebluff.

Alright, this is too slow for me. It's been a while since I ran a pbp game without either using my speedy rules or alongside some app like Discord or Facebook Messenger to poke people when it's their turn.

So! Officially swapping over to my speedy rules, found here. They take some getting used to, so feel free to ask any questions. Long story short, at the beginning of the round you players post and describe your turns (in any order), and then at the end of the round I summarize everyone's actions in context with each other and the enemies' actions. I also reserve the right to bump us into the next round when there is only 1 player left who hasn't posted, and that player gets 2 turns in the subsequent round.

Also, I encourage you all to take a look at the monsters' hp and AC - they're included at the beginning of each round in order to give you all free reign in narrating your own hits/misses.

We'll just say that those who have already taken their turn this round (Duren, Zanzur, and Snakebluff) are good as they are, and everyone else can pile in posts as soon as they want.

Hopefully this makes for more fast-paced gameplay! Have at it!

Round 1 Summary

The dim passageway fills with bright light as Corunir's armor shines, revealing clearly the gray masses jiggling towards the paladin. Arrows and crossbow bolts fly towards the oozes, but they wriggle closer.

The first slaps at Corunir with a slimy pseudopod, but the glowing paladin easily withstands the blow. The second ooze flings itself into the air and latches onto Corunir's helmet, emitting a strange hiss as it tries to squeeze its bulk through his visor.

Flesssh for the Facelesss Lord!

Corunir is just beginning to feel the sting of acid on his face (after resistance Corunir takes 2 bludgeoning and 2 acid damage) when Zanzur detonates the armor transfusions warding the paladin's armor. The explosion obliterates the ooze on the wet floor (Ooze 1 takes lethal damage), and dislodges the one clinging to Corunir's visor. It falls to the ground with a heavy splash.

For the second time in as many minutes the party is left to wonder which path to choose - forward into the strange temple, or try to find a way around in the tunnels...
Feb 8, 2020 4:02 pm
"Huzzah!" Corunir exults. "Onward, friends!" the paladin raises his (temporarily) enchanted blade and leads the way into the temple (he gets the direction right this time).
Feb 8, 2020 5:22 pm
Duren shrugs and follows the others keeping his bow ready for the next band of brother oozes.
Feb 8, 2020 11:57 pm
The sound of running water gradually grows louder as the companions head deeper into the temple. The wet walls bear faded murals of swirling, indistinct shapes, but the party finds no more of the gray oozes.

The hallway before them eventually opens to another room. The walls and floor glisten from the light of Andras' torch, and the party sees a floating pile of bones in one corner - floating in the air, that is. Suspended in the air next to the bones is a hammer made of some dark metal. Even a few coins hang in the air nearby, their metal faces cleanly reflecting the torchlight.

The bones and other items shift slightly in the air, and then the companions hear an odd sound... Is someone whistling? It takes a moment for the group to realize that the carefree sound is echoing not in the world, but within their minds.
Feb 10, 2020 6:03 am
"Steady, friends," Corunir exhorts his companions, and whispers a blessing upon them, before warily approaching the floating bones to learn more of their nature.

The party's unease grows as every sign points to the room being empty of another soul.

Snakebluff's supernatural sense detects no creatures within the room, though the entire temple reeks with the influence of the Abyss.

Corunir steps forward to examine the bones. A skull visible in the mix proves the origin as humanoid, though of what race he isn't sure... As he approaches, he is suddenly surrounded with thick liquid, as though he has stepped into a vertical pool of mucus.

The whistling stops.
Feb 11, 2020 4:24 am
I say!

As suddenly as he enters the near-invisible gelatinous cube, Corunir finds himself tossed out and to the floor.

What the what? What odd... things you are! The telepathic voice is tinged with curiosity. What are you? How did you get here? Do you have names? The items suspended in the air ripple slightly as if the ooze is squinting at the group. I love names!
Feb 11, 2020 4:47 am

The cube quivers with delight. The Valiant! My, that's a name indeed! Its mental whistle picks up again for a moment, appropriately awe-inspired. It shivers slightly before answering. My name... I haven't got one at the moment. I suppose I should have one. What would you call me, Corunir the Valiant? Make it a good one! Eagerness floods through the telepathic bond.
Feb 11, 2020 2:31 pm
"Ooblek the... the Astonishing!" Corunir suggests, remembering how he was knocked off his feet.
Feb 11, 2020 3:16 pm
"I am known as Zigurd of the Flametongue Tribe."says the barbarian with a tilt of his head.

"Names are very important. I am sorry that you do not have one... But, I agree with Corunir. That is a fitting name for a creature so majestic as yourself." finishes Zigurd with a genuine smile.

The ooze seems to ponder the name for a moment. Ooblek. Ooooooo...blek. OoOOOOooblek! Astonishing! I like it! The jelly-cube does a happy little dance that sets the bones inside drifting weirdly.

Treasure... Well, I suppose I have some here... Ooblek squeezes out everything it has and dumps it on the temple floor. The bones, coins, and hammer all clang as they hit the ground. You're welcome to it all! I've never had friends before. Can we be friends? I've been down here... An odd sucking sound emanates from beneath the cube, almost as though Ooblek is tapping a 'foot' on the floor in thought. Well, as long as I can remember! Which is odd, considering... Hmm. What was I saying?
Feb 12, 2020 5:36 pm
"Fascinating! Definitely Astonishing! A gelatinous cube with telepathic abilities!" Zanzur strokes his whiskers. "Zanzur Klibelmick! Pleased to make your acquaintance! What is it that you find odd? Zanzur tries not to show it, but the gnome finds the discovery of an ooze with psychic abilities quite disconcerting. Feb 12, 2020 10:31 pm
Zzzzanzzzzur... Zanzur! A wonderful name, indeed! I don't find it odd at all!

Ooblek continues babbling happily while Zigurd looks through the pile. The barbarian finds a dozen gold pieces, and discovers that the hammer has some faded runes on it. It likely has some magical properties.

The last thing I remember... why, that's an easy question. I remember... Hmm. That's odd... It trails off again for a moment. Not sure about those bones though. It used to be a drow elf, I think. It was a while ago.
Feb 12, 2020 10:56 pm
"Ah ha. 12 gold for 'The Fund'...and this hammer might be of mythical quality. I will take it with us so that we may understand it's workings later on. Identifying magics in new things is something our Zanzur handles, Ooblek" Zigurd says as he puts away the loot while talking to his companions, new and old.

"Will you be accompanying The Brave Companions as we head further into the caverns, Ooblek?" Zigurd asks the jelly as much as he is asking his fellow adventurers.

Ooblek happily scoots along with the party, leaving the floor clear and clean wherever it passes. From the filthy stare of this hallway, the companions might guess that if Ooblek passed here before, it must have been long ago. The cube continues its carefree whistling.

The next chamber is far different from the rest of the temple they group has seen up until this point, though the floor is just as wet. The walls here have somewhat clearer designs, carved with worn and faded bas-reliefs. These show strange, swirling shapes that might be waves, tentacles, or some combination thereof.

Along the right wall branch four hallways floored with heavy flagstones, each one extending into darkness. A large portion of the left wall is broken away, revealing another path of natural stone. The sound of falling water that the party has heard seems to come strongest from this open passage.

I am going to use a spell slot to set up my vine trap from where we came from. Unless something thinks it would better fit elsewhere.
Feb 15, 2020 3:57 pm
OOC:
Andras is able to set one trap for 'free' (without expending a spell slot) once per short or long rest, so long as he takes 1 minute to do so instead of an action. So he doesn't need to expend a spell slot at the moment unless he feels urgently pressed for time.
The companions take a few minutes to inspect the chamber and its exits more closely as Andras magically wards the way behind them.

From what Zigurd can tell, most of the flooding has come from tunnel beyond the broken wall. The water level on the floor seems to have risen about a half a foot in the last half hour.

Corunir notes that the floor tiles in the four hallways appear weakened in places. It is difficult to say how much weight the floor may be able to bear in any of those four paths.

Ooblek stays mostly still, though the floor beneath the ooze's mass squelches on occasion as it shifts its weight. The party gets a sense of immense curiosity as it watches them work.
Feb 15, 2020 9:58 pm

OOC:
Yeah, the result of Corunir's check is that he noticed the weak floor tiles.
With each step down the rough-walled tunnel, the group heard the sound of pouring water grow louder. Soon they come to a small cavern with cracks in the ceiling, through which flows a cascade of water. through cracks in the 10-foot-high ceiling. From the rate of the falling water, it would seem that the cracks were caused by the tremor the party experienced earlier. It's only a matter of time before water floods the entire complex.

There appear to be no other passages leading out of this cavern.

Zigurd can't help himself and he gawks a bit at the cascade.
"Yes, yes. Let us be on our way in the opposite direction. Come along, Ooblek" Zigurd says with a bit of shock to all of the Companions and the jelly. And he makes to follow Corunir back out again.

From what the companions can tell, each of the four passages has roughly the same amount of water on the floor. The water seems to be flowing down through cracks in the floor of each passage, suggesting that there may be another level of the temple below.

One of the oozes leaps at Corunir just as the paladin unleashes divine fury through his blade. The monster perishes, but Corunir falls to the ground covered in acidic goop (Corunir takes 42 damage and is knocked unconscious).

The other pudding swats at Zigurd with a pseudopod and leaves a burning wound on his arm (After resistance, Zigurd takes 2 bludgeoning and 19 acid damage). The other companions close in on the remaining ooze, striking with weapons and spells, when Tip's whips slice it down the middle. Once again the ooze splits into two separate monsters!

Round 3 Summary

The party fights on with one brave companion lying broken on the soggy floor of this dark temple. Above Corunir's body his comrades fight against the slimy terrors that haunt these halls.

Zigurd's hammer strikes home with a flash of fire that illuminates more clearly the two remaining black oozes. One of them lashes out at the barbarian with a slimy appendage, but he easily avoids the blow. Duren is not so fortunate, however, as a pseudopod slams into his chest - and immediately after follows an arcane blast as Zanzur triggers the charge laid on Duren's armor. One ooze dissipates into the stream of water that flows back down into the pit just a few feet away.

Tip works some strange healing on Corunir (Ooblek watches with great interest and appropriate awe) and the paladin rises with a vengeance, his magical sword slapping hard at the last ooze. Then a chunk of rock propelled by Zanzur's magic finishes the monster, and the hallway is left once more to the sound of dripping darkness.

I've been forgetting something. As a Wyvern Ranger the first hit of every day causes an extra 2d6 wyvern poison damage. OOC:
Aldrusian - The feature says, "When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you CAN deal an extra 2d6 poison damage to the target." So it's not automatically the first hit every day, it's an ability that you choose to expend on a hit, much like a paladin's Divine Smite. So after you hit you declare you use it, and then you roll the extra damage. I like to make the monsters' AC general knowledge in PbP so that you can tell on your own if you've hit or not.

"Gah!" Tip hurries to Duren's side. "Oh, good, good," she nods, surveying Zigurd's work. "But it works a little better," she brushes her hand across the ground, "if you rub some dirt in it." She pokes her dirty fingers under the bandages, carefully watching Duren's reaction.

Corunir helps Duren up. "What would we do without you, Tip?"
Mar 20, 2020 4:43 pm
Zigurd sees no more danger around the party, other than the rising water. In the hallway ahead spans the watery pit perhaps 10 feet wide where the floor gave way under Duren's feet. Beyond the pit the hallways continues and curves to the left.
OOC:
If the party wants to go forward you'll have to somehow cross the pit. 10 feet wouldn't be a hard jump for most PCs, but the water everywhere makes it considerably more difficult. I'm open to creative solutions! Or the group can go back and try another of the hallways.
Mar 20, 2020 5:24 pm
"Yep!" Tip proclaims in response to Ziggy's question, gesturing to Duren as proof.

She colours slightly under Corunir's praise. "Oh, take a permanent nap, probably." She scurries away to peer down the pit. "So... over?"
OOC:
Tip can cast Jump, but that would be her last spell slot.
Mar 20, 2020 6:39 pm
"Thanks, Tip. The dirt seemed to help," says Duren as he slowly gets to his feet with Corunir's help. "We've still got some work to do on those puddings don't we? Duren looks around he sees no attacking oozes. "Oh, I must have missed something."
Mar 23, 2020 2:13 pm
OOC:
Interest seems to have died in this game. Should we can it and start up a different one, higher level?
Mar 23, 2020 4:43 pm
OOC:
You're the boss Araklusta, and I'll follow wherever the party leads.
"We defeated the puddings, Duren, but now we have a pit in our way." Zigurd answers matter-of-factly.

Looking across the pit, he says, "I could leap across with a rope and it could help those who have issues with such feats."
Mar 24, 2020 12:50 am
OOC:
I'm still very interested in continuing here. But you're the boss - won't begrudge a halt if you feel we've given the subclasses enough of a test run.
"I have rope," Corunir volunteers, then whispers, "Erm, how about we toss Zanzur across? Do you think he'll mind?"

"I know a trick for making you extra bouncy but if you need it, Zigs." Tip takes an experimental running start, making as if to jump across. Instead she stops at the edge, nodding by as though she learned something, and returns to Corunir's side. "Better to ask forgiveness than permission," she whispers in return.

"I'm not against tossing Friend Zanzur, but I would need it to be his call even though you are our chieftain, Corunir" answers the Flametongue tribesman.

Mar 31, 2020 2:44 pm
Hmm... Hm hm hm... Ooblek scooches forward and slips its bulk into the pit with a wet *plop*. Then it shudders for a moment and stiffens. The top of its cube looks like a stiff, transparent bridge. Well? Over you all go! I promise not to eat any of you. It takes to whistling a cheerful tune as it waits for the party to cross.
Mar 31, 2020 5:38 pm
"Oh! Awesome!" Tip walks across Ooblek's top, curiously tapping and poking at it the whole way across.
Mar 31, 2020 6:54 pm
"Friend Ooblek, we of the Brave Companions will sing your praises around our fires and pints for years to come." Zigurd says thankfully as he steps over his friend's bridge trick.

"Will you need any help getting out on this side?"
Mar 31, 2020 9:43 pm
As the last of the party crosses, Ooblek jiggles contentedly. This hole is actually quite nice. As far as holes go, I mean. I think I'll stay here. After all, what if you need to cross again?
Apr 1, 2020 4:24 am
Duren is able to make his way across with minimal effort. "Where to next?" he asks of everyone.

For the next adventure you'll be able to play the same character (leveled up) or a new one, whichever you prefer.
The party moves forward through the passageway and finds a new room. This room contains a stone fountain with a raised edge. The basin contains shallow, brackish water. At the center of the pool, the rubble of a broken statue rest atop a pedestal. All that remains recognizable are a pair of clawed stone feet clutching the pedestal’s top. Carved into the walls are seven niches. Water seeps into one niche through a crack in the wall. Three other niches are empty. Strange, formless sculptures occupy the last three niches.

Being relieved of his new weapon revealed a surprised look on the barbarian's face.

Which is quickly followed by a chuckle and smirk as he watches Tip smash the wall.

He waits for the attacks conclusion and says, "Pardon me."

Tip's blow puts a small crack in the wall. Zigurd's smashes it wide open.

As the wall crumbles, the companions are hit by a flood of water and nearly flushed from the chamber, but Ooblek's mass catches any who lose their footing. After the initial surge the flood slows down. Corunir and Zigurd stand as bulwarks, helping their companions to move through the opened wall, and the party moves into a new system of caverns. The Oozing Temple is left behind at last!
