[ +- ] The Roof Is on Fire
Six weeks ago, Buzzard’s Ford was wiped from the face of Terrinoth by water. Today, though, you see the flames. From the walls of Cailn Castle, they almost look beautiful. For the inhabitants of the miner’s village just north of the castle, they probably seem like the Ynfernael.

You’ve been living at the castle for about four weeks now. It’s not officially an arrest; more of a strongly expected detainment while the baron works through what happened in Buzzard’s Ford. It hasn’t been so bad; you’ve got comfortable quarters, and besides the miners, the castle has its own little ecosystem—all the offices, barracks, monks, and support staff make it like a small town. But it’s been frustrating, since what should have been a quick review of your case has dragged on; shortly after you arrived at the castle, the baron got called away on diplomatic business to the east. The Baron’s Council, now headed by his son Renash, doesn’t want to hear anything more about Buzzard’s Ford until the baron is back. So you are left idling in the castle while you await the baron’s return. (You envy Nera, who melted into the Lower City in Nornholt before you had to report to your client.)

Helping with whatever crisis this is might win you some good will, so you rush to the site of the blaze. There, you see that three or four miners’ cabins ablaze. Worse, the flames are mere backdrop to a large-scale brawl! Seems about two dozen miners—mostly Dwarves and Gnomes, with a few Orcs and Humans thrown in—are throwing punches and taking them right back against another two dozen bedraggled folks you recognize as refugees from Buzzard’s Ford.

The castle garrison, already stretched thin since a large contingent traveled with the baron, seems unsure how to handle the situation. About five have set up a bucket brigade from the nearby Cailn River, while another half dozen attempt to calm the unruly mob. Neither tactic seems to be working very well.
OOC:
No initiative just yet unless you want to get physical with the brawling parties. So what do you do?

"It's been a while since I've been this angry... oh I'm shaking... it'll like drinking spirits mixed with gem powder..." Tronus mutters trying to control his breathing while clenching and unclenching his hands.

"All of you slagging sods put out the damn fire now! A knot on yer heads will be the least of your worries if you burn down the whole bloody mining district! And I'll personally by Goddess Gar Vanedi's name mark a black mark with the Merchant's guild so you won't be able to but a stone to kick!" Tronus bellows out frothing at the mouth his body visibly shaking.

These daft... the Baron might let everyone have grandkids so he can execute more than two generations of people if this goes up in a pillar of fire... Tronus mentally sighs in disgust.
May 12, 2021 5:28 pm
OOC:
Brilliant, and perfectly Tronus. Who's he targeting with this tirade? It's a bit too chaotic to affect everyone without some sort of (magical?) amplification. So, targeting the fire brigade? The guards trying to calm folks down? The miners? The refugees?

Once we know that, we can treat this as a Daunting (PPPP) Coercion or Leadership check with two setbacks for the guards, or three setbacks for the miners or refugees (general chaos and some very inflamed passions).

"Fortuna help us now!" Nekurr sighs at the sight of the miners brawling with the refugees while the useless baronial guards desperately try to brake away the fight and put off a raging fire that threatens to spread. just their luck really...

As Tronus jumps into the brawl and tries to get that under control, Nekurr looks at the poor guards trying to break up the fight and takes a different approach. Clearly, the dwarf is authoritative enough to allow those useless hands to help with he fire.

"Leave the brawl to us" the catfolk tells one of the guards. "The refugees know us and we can take care of it. You need to kill that fire before it is too late."
OOC:

Going to try to conjure some rain clouds. So base difficulty is Easy, Range I'm guessing would have to be at least Medium to be any use with would be +2 dice and then will look to make it a Grand Summons (Sil 3) for a decent sized cloud another +2 so that would be a Daunting Difficulty check....

OOC:
Since there are about 24 on each side, let's say your 8 successes and 2 strain get 17 of the refugees to stand down. The threat will be that one flees, leaving 6 still angered and fighting.
The refugees pause upon hearing Tronus bark out his tirade. "That's.. that's Tronus!" one of them exclaims. "Maybe he can talk some sense into these..." Most of the refugees take a step back, put up their hands, or otherwise retreat. A Gnome skulks off down the row of cabins. But six of the refugees keep fighting. "Let's burn 'em all down! We can't let these sods push us around!"
OOC:
I think what Nekurr's trying to do is more Leadership than Charm, so we'll go with that roll. 1 threat = they want to arrest everyone.
Meanwhile, Nekurr talks the guards into focusing on the fire. They nod in assent, but one adds, "Don't let anyone get away! We're taking this whole lot into the constabulary for questioning!" Talking them into focusing on the fire turns out to be a good idea, since just as the guards join their comrades in the bucket brigade, another cabin catches fire. A sudden storm cloud gathers overhead, causing everyone to look up in awe. It erupts in a torrential rain that seems to suppress the fires toward the south end of the camp. The bucket brigade turns its attentions to the newly flaming house and starts to get it under control. An old Half-Elf woman screams, "My shop! My shop!" as the men try to extinguish the flames.
OOC:
1 threat for Hildar = everyone gets a setback on all checks while the rain is coming down (but only if you're closer to the row houses).
It looks like things will be settled soon. The six refugees who still seem to want to fight can't last long against 24 burly miners. And with the arcane storm above, the guards won't need long to stop the last of the fires.
OOC:
Basically, you have a chance to do one more thing if you want. This might include an Average (PP) Knowledge (Geography) check on the miners. But otherwise, things will calm down in another few minutes thanks to your actions.
May 14, 2021 10:35 am
Listening how the refugees appear to have started this "rebellion" and see many of them giving up, Nekurr runs up the those you too a step back and advises them discreetly to just run away before the guards are back.
OOC:
Given things will calm down, if only 6 refugees are arrested that's not too bad.

Probably leadership again, +rain setback + PPP as they are less agressive?[

2 threat? oops, they ran into the burning house and died :(

A meaty hand claps on the arsonist suggestee's shoulder, "Did you just suggest you should burn down the Baron's Mining District in his castle with guards and us about? While still in the castle town. Regardless of the miner's all of this is the Baron's." Tronus states shocked.

These manlings are dafter then Nekurr when he can't think... Tronus thinks trying to process this level of stupidity.
May 14, 2021 6:55 pm
OOC:
Nekurr's 1 threat: A guard overhears him telling the refugees to vamoose.
With the fire nearly extinguished, Hildar puts several pieces together for at least some context on what seems to be happening here.

SavageBob sent a note to mcneils5
Most of the Buzzard's Ford refugees look worn-down in both body and spirit. Nekurr's words only bring out a few sighs and mutterings. "We're better off in jail," one says. "At least there, we can count on at least one square meal a day." Meanwhile, a nearby soldier overhears Nekurr's suggestion and tells him to get clear of the "prisoners."

The guild miners form a circle around the six recalcitrant refugees as Tronus tries to stop them from causing more damage. They start chanting a song of triumph in Old High Dwarven which Tronus recognizes as the Mining Guild's anthem. Within moments, four horse-drawn prison wagons appear on the scene, and another six soldiers armed with pikes begin rounding up the refugees and miners, careful to keep them separated. Neither side really resists.

Meanwhile, the old woman keeps lamenting her lost shop. She tongue lashes the refugees: "You did this! Don't let them get away! Some of them fled, too! They're probably in that filty camp of theirs!"

The torrential rains and buckets seem to finish off the flames, while the guards capture all the rioters. The only thanks you get is a gruff, "Back away from the prisoners!" from one of the soldiers.
May 17, 2021 3:38 pm
Nekurr brakes away as soon as the grumpy guard takes over the scene. It’s not like they are inter good graces of the baron nowadays that he would risk his luck like that. Plus, the refugees seems to like the idea of being in jail and the miners are generally the sort of brutes that need some time to get in touch with, not themselves exactly, but mostly with the basics of civilised living.

All parties being happy, the cleric turns to the old woman, who is not entirely pleased with having her property catch fire."My good woman, Fortuna’s blessing be on you in this strange times" he greets her, a little out of touch with the chaos that they were just in "Is there anything we can help you with?"
May 17, 2021 5:45 pm
The woman pushes past a guard who half-heartedly tries to keep her back from the wreckage of what looks to have been a large tent. The guard shrugs his shoulders and mutters something about her coming by the guard station later to identify the one who started everything. She then takes notice of Nekurr.

"I'm ruined!" she says, flailing her arms at the soggy, smoldering remains of her tent-shop. "There's me shop. What's left of it anyway. You want to help me, you make these drifters pay for what they done to me shop! In fact, I've a mind to head down to the constabulary this instant to let them know 'bout the one that's burgled me shop today and started all this mess..."
May 20, 2021 1:47 pm
OOC:
Bump! More questions for the old woman? Head to the constabulary? Follow after one of the folks who escaped? Say it's none of your business and go back to your chambers?
May 20, 2021 2:28 pm
"I'm curious how they'll pay if they're confined with no income. So something got stolen from your shop that lead to a riot and rampant fires? Now I'm curious what it could be." Tronus reminds and muses scratching his chin.
May 20, 2021 3:09 pm
Hildar heads to the agitated woman "Erm, yes. You said one burgled you? Do you know their name or do you just have a description?"
May 20, 2021 11:27 pm
The woman waves emphatically at the ruins of her tent. "You can't tell it now, but one of those swamp yokels slashed the side of my tent this morning, grabbed a bunch of my merchandise, and ran. I was right inside! So brazen! I called the guards, and they found the burglar barging into a tinker's shop just down there." She points down the row of cabins toward another tent, this one not smoldering. "Human girl. Kind of sickly. Yellow hair. Not much more than a kid. So, some of the miners who live here recognized the thief as one of those swamp yokels. Or, ah, refugees." It sounds like the word pains her to say it. "The miners don't like the refugees for some reason, I don't know why. So when these refugees came through the mining town today, it didn't take much to spark the violence you saw. It was one of the refugees that started it, mind you. Another kid. Dark hair. Half-Elf like me. Now I'm ruined!"

"Human girl. Kind of sickly. Yellow hair." Nekurr repeats "And another kid. Dark hair. Half-El... Interesting. Yes, I think you should report the incident. I am sure the Baron's men will be able to help you the best." the cleric says a blessing or two and then turns to Tronus "Should we figure out why the miners don't like Buzzard's people before trying to pick up the kids?"
May 25, 2021 4:18 pm
"I agree with Nekurr, lets head to the tinker's shop on the way though to find out what their side of this is as well."
May 25, 2021 9:59 pm

LOL.
As the shopkeeper declares once more that "those ruffians need to get what's coming to them," you walk down the row of cabins toward the tinker's tent at the opposite side. The miners' cabins seem well kept, with tidy common spaces and signs of laundry, cooking, and childrearing going on inside.

The tinker's tent is relatively simple; just a wooden table and bench with tools strewn across it. Various pans, washboards, picks, and shovels show that the miners have been making use of the proprietor's skills.

As you gaze into the tent, a bespectacled Catfolk pads up from a couple of houses away, apparently transfixed by the smoldering fire down the block. "Uh... Interesting times we live in, eh, friends? Do you have something in need of repair?"
May 27, 2021 8:02 am
Nekurr looks at the cat-folk purring a little greeting "Well, can you fix this mess between the miners and the refugees?"
May 27, 2021 9:50 am
Hildar nods in greeting to the tinker, casting a curious eye over the contents of their tent for anything interesting. As Nekur finishes Hildar chips in with a chuckle "Well, that might be a bit of a stretch for one person. As we understand it someone who tried to allegedly rob one of the shopkeepers was caught in your tent, or trying to get into your tent. Is that correct? We are just trying to get to the bottom of what caused these....interesting times as you say"
May 28, 2021 2:50 am
The Catfolk purrs back to Nekurr and then turns to address Hildar. "Well, let's see. I already told the constables what I know. But here goes: I was just sitting here, minding my own business, when I heard Old Lady Lone down the way crying out about a thief. I looked up from my work, and this Human girl barged in and threw a bunch of stuff into a pot I was working on. I understand now it was stuff she'd stolen from Old Lady Lone's place. The pot was pretty heavy, and she was a waify little thing, so it slowed her down enough for the guards to catch her." He pushes his spectacles up his feline nose. "Apparently, that riled up the miners, so they started shouting down some refugees coming out of the tunnel they're digging. One of the refugees took a swing at some Gnome trying to talk him down, and the kid took a swing. That set the whole thing off."
May 28, 2021 1:52 pm
"So a wee lass grabbed some things from the old woman tried to grab a pot from you realized it was too big as guard caught up and grabbed here. Miners didn't like what happen and found some refugees to yell at that were in the area. Refugees too a swing at a miner and 'a kid' took a swing and a riot broke out leading to the fires? You know how the fires started and you got the pot still?" Tronus sums up.
May 28, 2021 2:05 pm
"Correction," the Cat says. "The old Gnome who got swung at was another refugee. I think I saw him running off toward the refugee camp after the violence broke out. I didn't see who set the blazes, but I assume it was some of the refugees. Uh... And it's this pot right here. Nearly finished fixing it up."

The pot looks pretty nondescript, nothing more than a large pot a family might use to make stew.
OOC:
That said, Tronus is welcome to try an easy Perception check to look it over.
May 28, 2021 3:48 pm
"So the refugee's started fighting each other and the miners jumped in..." Tronus states wondering before checking out the pot.

[ +- ] Refugee Camp
The refugee camp isn't far—just the other side of the castle complex, at a far enough remove that the nobility who come and go through the gates don't need to smell the place. As the shantytown comes more clearly into view, you see that this isn't a pleasant place. The tents are small, makeshift affairs. Children run barefoot through the muddy paths between tents, dodging people throwing out night soil and other unpleasantness.

The people look tired, beaten down. You recognize them as the people you rescued from Buzzard's Ford. But back in their village, they were hardy, good-spirited folks. That spark is gone now. These are a beaten people.
OOC:
So maybe two options: 1) Flip a Story Point. Then let me know who you'd like to stumble across you to serve as a guide here, a friendly face who can get you to the Gnome you're looking for. Or 2) Try an Average upgraded (RP) Charm check with 2 boosts and 2 setbacks to get someone to lead you to the guy. (I'm guessing you're thought of fondly by about half the town, detested by the other half.)

Well, we can try the hard way first :D
Nekurr, seeing how good-spirit folks like those from Buzzard's Ford became these beaten, lifeless shells, starts to do what he does best. Well, second best. Preach the word of Fortuna, trying to brings some hope for better days to these people.

Nekurr's exhortations draw the attention of the bedraggled people, but their looks of annoyance are soon replaced by the shock of recognition. People start murmuring: "That's them!" "Nekurr, and Tronus. And Hildar, I reckon!" "Them's the ones whose friend turned into a tree..."

Finally a Half-Elf woman strides forward and stands mere inches from Nekurr's whiskers. Her spirit seems less broken than the others. "You preach of Fortuna. Ol' Erfie says the gods have forsaken us people of Buzzard's Ford. Begone. You've done enough damage already."
Jun 1, 2021 12:08 pm
"Does she mean the Evil God posing as a God of Harvest and Bounty that demanded a sacrifice yearly or the Spider God that eats beast or anything humanoid and uses it's corpse for hatching eggs? I can figure why other Gods would forsake people that daft. We're here to find out about what happened about the riot and the district almost going up in a blaze... unless the good people of Buzzard's Ford would prefer things to play out as they are currently going... General consensus is not looking good by the way and oddly worse than your current predicament. We'll leave when we're done and we're sorry we saved who we could instead of letting them getting swallowed up by the swamp... Seems like our associate died in vain... But if you're keen to speak for everyone and would prefer I just sock you in the mouth right now and wait a week to see if your people start getting hanged it's an option I guess. Your choice I guess." Tronus says a little bit surprised before his words become more and more venomous. He takes off a glove and flexes his fingers just incase he's request to punch someone in the face by said person.
Jun 1, 2021 12:51 pm
"What my good little friend here means..." Nekurr tries to keep the already unhappy Half-Elf woman in a not-so-bad mood "You freed yourselves from demonic influence and it will be difficult to return to the right path. A crowd of ex-villagers gathers to back Acorn Taldaris up. Her burly brother, Vern, looks particularly agitated. You remember he nearly bested Nera in a marksmanship test. Nekurr's exhortation deescalates the tension long enough for a voice to cut through:

"Now, now, that's enough, all of you!" You recognize the voice of the healer, Erfan Eswyse. "It may not feel like it, but Mr. Tronus here is right—we owe these men for breaking the Wayland spell over us." The diminutive elder limps forward. "Now, what say we treat them like the old friends they are, then?"

The words seem to dissipate the tensions fully. The more aggressive villagers back down and go back to their mundane tasks. Eswyse says, almost in a whisper, "Many here still blame you for... what happened to Buzzard's Ford. But you do have friends here. I think many recognize that what you did was warranted, even if things didn't turn out like a bardic sonnet. Now what brings you to our camp?"
Jun 1, 2021 3:46 pm
"One side of the story is a kid from here swiped some things from an old woman's shop tent and a pot from the tinkerer down the way and was caught by the guards for stealing things too heavy to run away with. Some miners came to tell some of your people off and a fight ensued between your people and well your people. A gnome was the target of the initial attack but ran back this way while the miners joined in... turned into a riot and there was the whole fire getting set and ablaze in the district that got put out which you can still smell in the air. Some people are pushing to have the people of Buzzard's Ford kicked of the Baron's city while others just want compensation. The first of those is probably not favorable. So what's Buzzard's Ford's side of the story?" Tronus states.

Well I guess no one wants to stop a good thing when someone else's life is taken for it they boon they receive until it's their neck on the block. I wonder if they even realize what it means to be associated with such a cult outside their village... Tronus thinks eyeing the elves to see what they're up to now.

Hildar remains somewhat subdued looking over the refugees. The more aggressive villagers seem to have gone back to their business. Eswyse looks at his feet, then meets Tronus's gaze. "Ah, I know this Gnome you speak of quite well. He's me! All this nonsense with the riot and what caused it... These are things best discussed in private. Follow me. And welcome to Buzzardtown."

You hadn't noticed it before, but the healer uses a wooden crutch to walk; it seems he must have twisted his ankle perhaps. He also has a fresh shiner around his eye that suggests he's been on the receiving end of a fist lately. He leads you through the maze of makeshift dwellings and finally to a ramshackle cabin made from mismatched planks and blankets. The interior features a simple cot, a side table fashioned from an old crate, and a wash basin. Healing tools litter the floor, including a recently used bolt of cloth Eswyse seems to have used to wrap his ankle.

The Gnome clears the side table of a book and sits on it, bidding you to sit on the cot. "Sorry, it's not much. But it's home now. So you asked me for Buzzard's Ford's side of this story. How far back do you want me to go?"

"No, not directly," Eswyse says. "We of course parted ways in Nornholt, where you brought us—what, six weeks ago now?" Give or take a day or two, his estimate is right. "The mayor did what he could to find us food, shelter. But the city just hasn't been able to absorb all of us. So, about two weeks ago, this fellow came 'round to one of our camps outside the city saying they needed workers out castle-way. So a bunch of us hiked over to the castle. Jun 7, 2021 8:22 pm
"Stealing?" Eswyse asks. "You mean Lyssie Galbernost? Not sure what's gotten into her. She's been taking things here and there around our little town here, but stealing from someone in the miner's town? That was new." He shakes his head. "The wee ones have been different lately, ever since Olond's been using 'em in the tunnel."
Jun 8, 2021 7:09 am
Nekurr almost jumps surprised "Lil Lyssie? How can a sweet kid like that do that?" He looks at Tronus and Hildar and simply says "Goatman"
[ +- ] Nekkur
Jun 8, 2021 2:58 pm
"Wish I knew why the wee ones've been acting strange," he shrugs. "I been down that tunnel, and I ain't seen nothing but dirt. But Lyssie and a couple others have been doing extra work for Olond, so maybe there's something to it..." He looks to Nekurr with a quizzical expression. "But goat-men? What's this?"
OOC:
Just a reminder that Hildar has a bit of context that he hasn't shared (in a private note above).
Jun 9, 2021 9:27 am
"Oh nothing, don't worry. It's just a kitten's story. I think we need to check what this Olond is doing down there in those tunnels. Something probably scared the children"
OOC:
*wink wink* Tronus
Jun 10, 2021 1:48 pm
"Well, I think Madam Olond's got her offices in the castle. We Buzzard Towners aren't allowed inside the castle walls except to visit the chapel for some daily rations and the like. St. Durvin's Chapel. I hear the Tabbins girl, Jacey, has been 'round there quite a bit." He sighs and rubs his sore shoulder. "I'd guess poor Lyssie's been locked up by the guards. The Grimbly boy'll be there, too, assuming they nabbed him for starting the riot. Not sure why he sucker punched me when I tried to talk the miners down back there." He looks to each of you in turn. "You three thinking of looking into the matter? You can move around the castle in ways we refugees can't..."
Jun 10, 2021 3:41 pm
"I figure we should since some people might be getting taken advantage of... hopefully it won't lead to finding out it's about dark gods or demon summoning or worship." Tronus admits thanking the man, "Should we check with their kin to see if anything odd has happened recently with them?" he asks the others.
Jun 11, 2021 3:44 am
"Oh, that won't do you any good," the Gnome tut-tuts. "The other Galbernosts never left Nornholt, and Grimbly's an orphan. And you know what happened to the Tabbinses... I will say that I haven't heard anything about demons or Bird Gods, if that's your fear. All I've seen is dirt, dirt, and more dirt. I'm done with it."
Jun 11, 2021 7:16 am
Listening to the gnome's reminder of how we destroyed the kids' lives forever scaring them into a life of delinquency, Nekurr simply shrugs and says "Yeah, teenagers"

"We've been in the area a wee bit longer than your people. Tell them to mind the shadows the darkness isn't the only thing there." Tronus warns before taking his leave.
Jun 11, 2021 1:42 pm
"Go with the gods," Eswyse says as you exit the shanty. "The good gods, that is."
OOC:
So, where to? Leads: Visit the arrested folks (including a couple of these kiddos) at the jail; visit the office of Marseen Olond, who's heading this tunnel project; visit St. Durvin's Chapel, where Jacey Tabbins hangs out; visit the tunnel site; visit the person funding the tunnel project [Hildar has this information]; visit the Mining Guild for their side of the story. Maybe others?
Jun 12, 2021 8:23 pm
As they leave Erfan's company Hildar quietly speaks to the others "This project they are working on, it's an attempt to pipe water into the area to somehow....I don't know, exploit a loophole in the curse that causes so many issues with crops in Cailn. The thinking is if they pipe the water in from somewhere that isn't cursed then they will be able to grow things here again.". He shakes his head slightly "I would have thought if it was so simple to bypass a curse that has been afflicting these lands since the Third Darkness that the curse would have failed by now but I suppose people need hope. Anyway, the project headquarters are in the castle so if we want to investigate that route further and see whether Dribbage Senior or his niece is involved that would seem like a good place to start. Unless one of you two have a different preference that is?"
Jun 12, 2021 8:45 pm
"It is definitely worth checking with the Dribbages… if they would see us" Nekurr agrees, remembering the last time they crossed paths. "Though we may stop by the miners just to check if they noticed something strange before stopping the work there"

Sounds like Marseen Olond's office, or Mining Guild HQ. Tronus, care to tiebreak? (We can always visit the other location afterward.)
Jun 15, 2021 1:26 pm
OOC:
Bump! We headed to the office or the guild HQ?
Jun 15, 2021 2:39 pm
'You two aren't curious why the kids are doing what they're doing that lead to the riot and fire indirectly?" Tronus adds.
OOC:
My bad, three way split?
Jun 15, 2021 3:10 pm
OOC:
Hildar: Visit Marseen Olond's office;
Nekurr: Visit Mining Guild HQ;
Tronus: Visit the castle jail.

We can do that. Only potential downside is that I figure Tronus probably has some clout with the guild (as someone with membership in another guild), which Nekurr does not. And Hildar's not very face-y, so having him square off with a politician may not go as smoothly as Nekurr or Tronus doing it. :)
Jun 15, 2021 7:13 pm
"Hmm I'll talk to the mining guild, you two talk to the kids in jail maybe Nekurr being nice will help and if there's something magical suspicious Hildar will pick up on it. Mett up to talk to the Olond office so I don't accidentally sock him in the face with a verbal fist..." Tronus pieces together.
Jun 16, 2021 1:30 am
OOC:
Sounds like a plan. I'll run with this tomorrow morning unless there's any change.
Jun 16, 2021 8:17 am
Nekurr considers Tronus' proposal. Dwarf + mines, check. Angry dwarf = pain, check. "What a splendid idea!" the cleric decides to agree with his investigation partner. "We need to drop by the candy shop to get the kids some sweets" he adds to Hildar
Jun 16, 2021 1:28 pm
Nekurr & Hildar
[ +- ] Dungeon
You're find the castle garrison easily; everyone knows it's in the tallest tower in the castle. (Fortunately, Nekurr finds he has some candy in his pack already.) You hear the chaos before you see it: shouts of "Let us out!" and similar, answered by Miniing Guild chants, and finally answered by a gruff voice telling everyone to shut up. When you make it down the stairs to the small office, you find a lone guard at the desk speaking to the merchant from the scene of the riot. Mining Guild members sit on stools or on the floor. The cell doors beyond are closed; the refugees are presumably inside.

Gemma Lone identifies you as two of the ones who helped put out the fires. The guard looks up, obviously overwhelmed by the situation, but quill in hand. "You blokes come to give your statement? What happened, best as you recall?"
OOC:
Will get Tronus's visit to the guild hall up later today.
Jun 16, 2021 5:30 pm
[ +- ] Mining Guild Hall
Tronus finds the Mining Guild's satellite office down one of the castle's bureaucratic corridors. Sunlight streams in from a clerestory above, something folk must appreciate when they spend most of their lives underground. Banners bear the Mining Guild crest, while tables provide plenty of room for guild meetings. A raised dais likely serves as a stage from time to time.

A male Dwarf, youngish to judge by his undergrown beard, perks up from his seat near the entrance. "Oh, are you the Guild Representative from Nornholt? I was told we were expecting Ebon Hensnest..."
Jun 16, 2021 7:50 pm
"Not the Representative or Proxy. Here to talk about the Dribbage Tunnel job. Situation and people involved lead to the riot and fire in the district." Tronus lays out everything plainly.
Jun 17, 2021 10:11 am
"Hello again" Nekurr greet the woman before replying to the guard. "Well, we only helps putting the fire out mostly. " Nekurr tries to get out of having to explain all the details, since they probably can't add much more to what Gemma Lone already said. "We were actually hoping to talking with the kids. I mean..." the cleric stutters for a little bit as he realizes he probably needs a good excuse to do so. "We know the kids and were hoping we could have interviewing them as they already, well, trust us"
Jun 17, 2021 12:51 pm
A voice, somewhat deep but still feminine, calls from outside the room: "Say no more, Mr. Barnpuddle!" A Gnome woman storms in, still huffing from the stairs. She positions herself between Tronus and the young Dwarf and stands to her full height—still a head shorter than Tronus. "Who sent you? The castle guard? I'm headed that way as we speak. I'm sure you'll agree that these so-called 'refugees' are totally at fault for the riot and fire you mention. They violated our guild charter with the barony. They struck first." She turns toward a desk and fishes out some papers. "This is our guild charter and agreement for the Dribbage Water Tunnel. I just wanted to grab it before I went to get my miners released. Now, will there be anything else, guardsmen, or am I free to go fetch them?"
OOC:
Charm might get her to talk more about the project and the charter, etc., but you'll need to either walk and talk (and thus lose access to the young Dwarf for now) or Charm her to stop for a moment. Charm on her is PPP with 2 boosts and 2 setbacks—she's pressed for time, but she also wants to clear her group. Coming clean about not being a guard and mentioning guild membership will net another boost.

I'll entertain a case for Leadership, as well, with different modifiers in that case. That difficulty is PP.
Jun 17, 2021 1:57 pm
OOC:
Assuming that you aren't hiding any of this story from him. Let me know if you are, and we can redo this post.
The guard presses you both for a more thorough account: How did you come upon the riot? What is your relationship is to the miners and the refugees? How do you know the young man who assaulted the Gnome fellow? Upon learning about your exploits in Buzzard's Ford, he stops writing and taps the quill, splattering drops of ink as he thinks. "So you know these Buzzard Towners, eh? From the sounds of it, this Grimbly bloke and this Galbernost woman may not be eager to see the likes of you..."
OOC:
Time for a social check! Most anything is RP with this guy.
Jun 17, 2021 2:34 pm
"Oh I'm defintely not a guardmen, I'm looking into this incident with some associates until the Baron gets back to continue deliberations directly with him on a different matter involving the Barony as a whole. From your remarks you're implying the refugees are in fact a false claim and your miners aren't the primary cause although you aren't denying acknowledge they're action indeed lead to the riot and fire breaking out but you'd prefer to stick the responsibility and blame on the other party entirely. If I look at it another way you've just said 'Mr. Barnpuddle don't say anything else to him about the situation, I need to go get my miners out and attempt to strong arm and/or loophole around the contract to get the refugees, excuse me as you put it alleged refugees, off of the job and put my miners in that way they'll pretty much starve or have to find work elsewhere by way of having to leave the city. This way we can ensure the monopoly on work and the price.' That sound about right? Wouldn't want to misinterpreted your message and action if it comes up later as needing to be addressed with other parties." Tronus replies flatly focusing on the newcomer.
OOC:
I'll let you decide on what you think it sounds like but probably wasn't what you were expecting... maybe a little considering Tronus.
Jun 18, 2021 8:06 am
OOC:
Not sure if Mcneils is around at the moment, but since I started it... Maybe hildar can help :D
Nekurr takes the candies from his pack and smiles. "Well, I guess they are not talking much are they? A familiar face may be our best option. After all, we own them this after they lost everything, don't you think? Fortuna blesses their poor souls"

@Remnant: In typical Tronus fashion, there are elements of a couple different skills in that pitch. :P At this point, you're just trying to convince her to slow down and speak to you rather than rush off to the jail. I'll let you decide if you're more trying to appeal to her better nature (consider the plight of the refugees! — Charm), or if you're more trying to convince her that she doesn't want to come off looking insensitive to them (the part about you bringing this up later with powerful people — Coercion).

Since Tronus doesn't seem concerned about the miners (her main concern), Difficulties are Charm: PPP + 3 setbacks; Coercion: PP + 3 setbacks.

Yeah, Mcneils5 has been quiet in my other game, too. He may be away at the moment. Feel free to pump the guard for more info, but we can also pause here to wait for him to get back.
The guard laughs at the candy. He points at it with the inky quill. "I'm afraid you'll need to hold onto that a bit longer. They're both at the chapel under care of the priests. Under guard, of course. From the testimony of the local merchants, it seems clear your friends are responsible for what happened—Madame Lone here saw this Grimbly attack the old Gnome fella unprovoked. But their behavior suggests they're not..." He scratches his mustache with an ink-stained finger and continues, "...not right in the head. The clerics will tend to them until they're right enough to speak for themselves. Now, if you have any other questions about the incident, I can maybe fill you in."

The guard flips through some papers, muttering, "Let me see here... Ah, yes. Here it is. Looks like This Lysentrude Galbernost was caught stealing food, bedding, and hygiene products from other people in her cell. Seems even after receiving a severe beating from a fellow prisoner she brazenly continued to steal from the others. And as for this Melchic Grimbly fellow, seems after he was apprehended for assault, he attempted to beat the guards carrying him, then attacked the other prisoners in his cell. The captain of the guard has determined that neither prisoner seems to be of sound mind, so he has requested that the clerics check them for potential drugging..." He looks up at Hildar, meets his gaze. "Or perhaps worse."

Tronus
OOC:
LOL. I think it just means she's identified you as an enemy, so getting information out of the miners is going to be harder.
The woman fakes a smile. "Thanks for that. Now I know what side you're on. Let me make it clear... What was your name again? Lord Thrombosis? The Mining Guild wishes no ill on the refugees. But my first duty is to protect my miners and to hold Lord Renash, son of the very same baron you speak of, to his legally binding contract with my guild. We have the sole legal right to excavate the Dribbage Water Tunnel. And we have the right to safe working conditions to do so. Now, until such a time as Renash and his lackey, Marseen Olond, wants to ensure that there will be no more accidents of the type that felled this young man's father..." She indicates the young Dwarf seated nearby. "...we will continue our work stoppage and use every resource at our disposal to ensure that the tunnel remains closed to further work by us or by anyone else. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some guildmembers to get released." The smile never leaves her face through the entire monologue. She starts to leave, but then she stops to add, "Oh, and don't even think about talking to my injured miners. I'm warning them about you. I don't think we can trust you to not twist their words. They faced a nightmare down there in that tunnel, and I'm not going to jeopardize their chance to get that made right." And just like that, she's gone.
Jun 22, 2021 8:20 am
"Stealing food and basic good?" Nekurr looks to Hildar "That sounds more like desperate than possessed by the devil. " he laughs. "Maybe we should check what the clerics think about this.". Before leaving he turns back to the guard "What do you know about this Dribbage mine business by the way?"

Tronus blinks taking in the new information, "Great! We're on the same page then and it's Tronus of Clan Granitebreaker. What kind of injuries? Injured from claws, undead, hooved footprints, or uh anything demonic like. Yeah I agree if it's related to any of those we need to shut it down now."

Tronus

The woman is already outside the room by the time Tronus gets a word in. If she hears his followup questions, she makes no sign of it as she disappears down the corridor.

The young Dwarf clears his throat. "Um... I'm sure you can see your way out, Lord Granitebreaker?" He smiles sheepishly.
OOC:
Reminder, as it may have gotten lost in her response: Barnpuddle's dad was apparently part of whatever accident shut the tunnel down for the mining guild and opened the door to the refugees to take over. The guard spins the quill between his thumb and forefinger. "I agree. No reason to think there's anything mysterious at work. It's either desperation or, perhaps, noxious fumes. A mineshaft doesn't offer much in the way of fresh air, you know." The guard nods over toward the area where the miners are sitting and shrugs his shoulders. "As for this whole tunnel business, all I can really say is that we've stepped up patrols around the dig site to keep anyone else from getting in or out. We've asked Dribbage Acquisitions to cease work for the time being, but this Olond person in charge is in talks with the captain of the guard to let her take over security as long as she ceases work until the dispute with the miners is settled." He pauses, then adds. "Don't know much more than that."
Jun 22, 2021 9:35 pm
"Welll that's it I guess you're aren't aloud to talk to me... Sorry bout your father. Guess before the deal no one told the miners about the area used by a man that half transformed himself into a demon with cloven hooves to summon more powerful things from the dark under the crypt. Took a while to take down what came up even for a non combative half goat it was rubbish chasing him down. Hopefully your dad gets better. Hope the refugees didn't take the job unknowningly... if they all die in the tunnels well I guess the job will be available and there will be a young ones running the streets with desperation in their eyes... watch yourself." Tronus states before moving to slowly leave.

Onin Barnpuddle's eyes nearly bulge out at mention of goat-men and demons. "Pa said it was just a pocket of air we done opened up down there!" His voice has been raising, so he catches himself. "Look, if you think it was something more than just trapped swamp gas or something, you gotta see my old man! I'll be done with my shift here at sundown. If you can visit, Ma's taking care of him in our house in the mining camp... Number 35. I'll tell 'em to speak to ya. I won't tell Madam Hensnest, honest!"

"So you're saying that this Olond person trying to get the captain of the guard to reduce the patrols, if Dribbage Acquisitions to cease work and waits fro the miners dispute to end?" Nekurr asks the guard, considering what Olond may be up to. "So no one has been in or out recently?"
Jun 23, 2021 12:30 pm

Jun 23, 2021 5:54 pm
"Sorry, Sir, but I can't speak more here," the young Dwarf says, blushing red under the stubbly beard. "If you're a physic or an herbalist, though, you might speak to Father Gettle. He's been treating Pa since the accident. Please, now... leave. I don't want to get in trouble with the guild..."

The guard shrugs. "Things are changing minute by minute. Last I heard, the guard was ordering the tunnel closed and making sure that order was followed. That should mean no one's gone in or out since early this morning, at least. What Madame Olond is up to or not, I can't say. But her offices aren't far, just across the castle in the bureaucratic wing." He looks anxious to get back to his bookkeeping. As they move closer to Olond's office, Nekurr stops to look at Hildar and Tronus. "We need to be careful with this one. According to the guards, she seems to be far too keen to get the mines open for Dribbage Acquisitions."
Jun 25, 2021 11:48 am
OOC:
Tronus lets them know about Ms Hensnest who seems to be a straight shooter and meeting up with the injured and wanting to talk with their healer as well.
"Do we want to wait then and talk to someone injured in the tunnels? Miners aren't going to mine in unsafe conditions and the refugees don't really know the lay of the land... actually the miners don't know about the pile of goatshit horror they stepped in initially taking the job before it got switched to the refugees it seems. Olond might want to continue work with her guards more on lookout in truth or keeping the workers inside until the jobs done."

OOC:
OK, operating as if you have decided not to set up a meeting with Olond for later. Moving to the chapel.
Suspecting that Marseen Olond may not be forthcoming about what's going on in the Dribbage Water Tunnel, you decide to leave a visit with her for later. Better to get a better idea of what's actually been happening down below from the Buzzard's Ford kids and this Barnpuddle, all of whom are under the care of healers of some sort.

Based on your conversation with the guardsman, you know that Lyssie Galbernost and Melchic Grimbly are supposed to be under the care of the clerics of St. Durvin, who run a satellite clinic in the castle. It's on the opposite side of the structure and on the ground floor, attached to the larger chapel, which spills out into the surrounding countryside, where the clerics serve regular meals to the Buzzard's Ford refugees. The smells of unguents and the moans of patients hit you before you reach the healing clinic. It's one big room, more or less, with patients given some modicum of privacy via sheets hung around them. The clerics putter about from patient to patient, most in vestments of their saint.

An elderly woman approaches, looking harried and severe. "No visitors! Visiting hour is two hours past sunup until lunchtime. Please, you'll have to come back later."
OOC:
I'm sure you'll want to talk your way past her? Most social checks are going to be RP against her, except Leadership, which is RPP. Setback since she's a rule-follower.

Her eyes widen and her forehead wrinkles. "Those two! I'm afraid we've had to sedate them. The boy, this Grimbly, is near-homicidal, and this girl, Galbernost, can't seem to stop herself wandering around swiping our supplies." She adopts an officious posture for a moment, but then a grimace deepens her frown lines. "Look, I feel for these two, I do. Please tell their parents they are in good hands here. Perhaps they'll be in a condition to talk in a week's time, once we've had a chance to determine what's darkening their minds..."
Jul 2, 2021 11:59 am
"Nekurr... you could have mentioned you're a priest oddly enough, he's a very intelligent scholar experienced in unnatural phenomena, and I'm a templar and apothecary... so you could have asked if they'd like assistance with these two and possibly the others. Or did you forget..." Tronus pointedly states with a sigh rubbing his forehead pointing at Hildar with his freehand.
OOC:
I'm suppose be blunt and rub people like greasy sandpaper so...
Jul 2, 2021 1:47 pm
She nods in acknowledgment, apparently unfazed by Tronus's bluntness, which seems to match her own. "I see. Would it help to see the patients? I'm afraid I can't allow them to be brought around, but perhaps seeing that they are being safely attended to will be enough to reassure their parents that they're in good hands?"
Jul 3, 2021 12:56 pm
"Seeing them in their current sedated state would be best. Has anyone already examined them? Do they have any....unusual marks or injuries?"
Jul 6, 2021 1:27 am
"Of course," the healer says with a nod. "This way, please." She leads you past several curtained-off beds clear across the area, walking with mincing steps. She explains along the way, "Because the castle guard technically has custody of these two, I've been tending to them personally. It's baffling really..." She arrives at a stout, wooden door. "We've had to keep them away from the others. One moment. " She pulls a key out from a ring at her hip. It clinks into place, and the door swings open. "There they are, as I said, sedated. I've only heard then speak briefly, when the guards brought in their friend—a waif of a girl, who managed to get them to reveal their names, at least. Poor thing. Physically, they are perfectly fine. No marks, bruises, injuries, or the like... other than the normal physical stresses of poverty and lack of food. You're welcome to enter, if you'd like, but please don't try to touch or rouse them for your own safety."
OOC:
Let me know if you'd like to do any kind of observation without physically touching the two comatose bodies. Medicine would let you confirm or refute the cleric's diagnosis. Magic might be a way to get some insight into their condition depending on what you'd like to try. Other options may work, too.

Nekurr follows Sister Mabel in silence and enters the room, looking around the place until his eyes fall on the two children. "Fortuna help these poor souls" he starts a short prayer in his own corner.
OOC:
Going with divine "detect evil" or "detect bad stuff". Not sure if that is a utility or augment spell.

So, maybe something in the prayer just clicks and reminds Nekurr of something relevant... I don't know maybe something like "but deliver us from goat people". For the triumph... maybe we can find/sense/trip over something about the mines?

Nekurr approach Hildar as he takes another look at the sleeping children. "I... I think they found something... some, thing not magical, something in the air maybe... it scared them." He looks like a raving lunatic, swaeting and simply staring blank at the floor. The he shivers and looks back to Tronus and Mabel. "Jacey Tabbins. Where is she?"
Jul 9, 2021 12:17 am
OOC:
Sorry, missed that Nekurr had asked the sister a question.
The cleric looks to Nekurr confused. "Are you referring to the jittery little thing the guards brought in to try to get these two talking? I understand that she usually comes around for the nightly meals we offer at the chapel proper." She furrows her brow and puts her hand on Nekurr's head. "Are you feeling quite all right there, Brother?"
Jul 9, 2021 7:59 am
Nekurr takes a deep breath and move closer to... anything that will support him, likely Tronus... or a wall. Looking at Mabel he forces a smile ans dismisses her worries. "Sure, sorry. I had a light breakfast today. So you say little Jacey comes by for the nightly meals? Maybe we can came back later to talk to check how's she doing"
Jul 9, 2021 12:26 pm
Tronus raises an eyebrow with a sigh he nods, "Thank you for your time I've no doubt you have things to attend we'll be in touch." he states picking up Nekurr like a child if a child would be much taller then their parent to walk out.

"You should work out more or eat more meat... Why are you fainting?" he chides the priest.

I can't think of anything for us to do in the meantime. The only thing is whether Hildar could consult his books and see if there's anything that may relate to airborne pathogens or the like but it's probably a stretch given the limited info we have at the moment
Jul 12, 2021 1:42 am
OOC:
Yeah, I think Hildar hitting the books could be useful, but perhaps after you've burned daylight first?

So, you only have a name for the guy treating the injured miners: Father Gettle. How do you want to go about tracking him down?
Jul 12, 2021 7:49 am
OOC:
I agree checking some of those St Durvin's records may help like last time. But getting information on Father Gettle sounds a priority before talking to the miner.

"Gettle!" Sister Mabel practically snorts. "As I understand it, the Mining Guild brought him in from Tamalir. Priest of Kellos. He's already tried to barge in here to see our patients on two separate occasions and had to be politely... escorted out." She pauses, seems to think as she fiddles with some sort of rosary. "I suppose he might speak to you if you're on good terms with the Mining Guild. I believe he's been given guest lodgings near the mining guild's headquarters."
Jul 12, 2021 1:37 pm
"Thanks and we'll be sure to remind him with a boxing to the ear about you saying hello." Tronus states with a nod before turning to leave and to see if he needs to carry Nekurr
Jul 13, 2021 1:39 am
As you move back toward the Mining Guild's headquarters, the late-afternoon sun casts much of the interior of the castle into shadow. You pass a few beleaguered bureaucrats along the way, but for the most part, your boots echo through the empty castle corridors as the workaday stiffs finish out their day.

So what I was thinking is as follows:

Turn a corner and duck into a convenient alcove (spend a SP for this?)
Cast a Mask (1 base Diff) that covers the alcove (+1 diff for Size additional effect as base Mask only covers Sil 1), thinking making it looks the same as the rest of the wall (+1 diff for Realism additional effect).
There's nothing in the rules in the EPG that says one way or the other whether you can make the Mask see through from one side so could we add that for another +1 diff?

OOC:
You the players do have all the Story Points at the moment, but none is required to find an alcove.

I think your difficulty (PPP) sounds right for a Mask that blocks off the alcove, but I think to be balanced, we should say that the illusion will block sight and sound from both sides (yours and theirs). You won't be able to see or hear them, nor will they be able to see or hear you (assuming they fail their Perception/Vigilance check).

If you want the three of you to be able to see and hear through the illusion, you're effectively doing a silhouette-1, character-focused mask with the additional target modifier. That difficulty would be base (P) + realism (+P) + additional illusion (+P) for a total of PPP. Same difficulty as making a fake wall, but it requires you to get 4 advantage (or 2 advantage and a triumph) to successfully mask all three of you. I think it would make sense for each of you to make some sort of check to remain still (maybe Cool?) if you remain masked longer than a minute or so), as I don't want us to shortchange the PPPPP needed for a true Invisibility spell on a single character that Mask allows.
Jul 13, 2021 9:31 pm
OOC:
Lets try for the see through option - rolling below.....will spend a SP to activate my Brilliant Casting talent which will add 2 x advantages, not enough to completely get us over the line but it gets rig of the Threat so can the two of us that the spell has worked on block sight of the third? Would be harder for them to be hidden but it's the best I can think of with the results of that roll.

I think what you're trying to do needs to be pretty tough—it's basically low-grade invisibility. So why don't we call it a boost to the unmasked person for a Stealth roll to dive behind the other two? Basically what you're suggesting, just we require the roll now rather than later. Whoever it is can roll Stealth vs. RP with a boost from the passed advantage.

Believe it or not, Hildar's actually our stealthiest character now that Nera's gone. :) So he masks Tronus and Nekurr and then dives behind them?

LOL. In a nutshell, two of you are now magically camouflaged as pieces of castle wall. Which two and what the third person is going to do to hide are the questions up in the air. :)

A curse isn't a bad idea, as it will make it harder for these people to see through the illusion and/or find someone trying to hide. It'll be tough to hit all of them at range, but if you want to try, difficulty will be Average to start (PP) + Range short (+P) + Additional Target (+PP) + penalty for casting without talking (+2 Blk) = PPPPP + 2 Blk. No Component Casting, I think, unless you want to leave a card on the ground for them to find!

I think leaving a card is a nice touch. They already know we were there anyway and it will distract them if they see/grab it

OOC:
No need to use the Triumph to get them to talk; that's a given, assuming you're all able to get this mask to stick. I think at this point we're just waiting on Hildar (?) to make a Stealth check vs. RP to dive behind you and Tronus.

As for Tronus drawing his sword and shield -- I think the nature of the mask you're under makes that hard to do. It's not a full Invisibility spell, so you'll need to remain still to remain camouflaged against the castle wall. But let's say you can try to draw your weapon for a Stealth check vs. RP + Blk?

That said, Nekurr's Triumph could be used to upgrade Hildar's Stealth check to hide, or Tronus's Stealth check to draw a weapon unnoticed. Or a narrative use, of course.

Here's where we are:

Hildar: Give me a Stealth check vs. RP + Blk, with a boost.

Tronus: Give me a Stealth check vs. RP + Blk to get either the sword or the shield out without breaking the mask. Or just wait to see what happens if you'd rather not try that.

Nekurr's Triumph can be used to upgrade either of these checks, or for a narrative use.

OK, so here's their roll to see through the illusion. I'm using Nekurr's Triumph to upgrade the difficulty of the check, as it matches the intent of his spell to curse them. They're getting a boost from Hildar's Threat.
Hildar dives for cover behind Nekurr and Tronus, but his foot slips on Nekurr's playing card, sending it sliding back behind the masked investigators. Four burly-looking men, a mixture of Humans and Orcs, saunter into the corridor. "Hey, lookie lookie. Those ones got some sort of spell on 'em to look like the walls. That one's trying to hide. Guess they made us." You realize the jig is up. No use hiding now. "Come out, come out wherever you are..." You get the impression they mean business, but you're not particularly inclined to cooperate...
OOC:
They fail the Coercion check thanks to Nekurr's strong will and Tronus's surliness. So how do you want to spend their Despair and Threat?

OOC:
You're describing the Blur special effect for the Mask spell; it adds an automatic Threat to any combat checks targeting Tronus or Nekurr as long as Hildar maintains the spell. I'll allow that for the Despair for one of the two threats (this is a minion group and a Rival who acts alone).

That said, you're not in combat yet, so mcneils5 can make the call if he thinks that's likely.

"Oh, I'm so delighted that you've taken an interest in this case! It doesn't feel right keeping things bottled up like the Guild wants me to do, not something as potentially significant as this!" He takes a deep breath and claps his hands together. "Now, I have no idea whether the Ynfernael is involved or about any of the particulars of the Barnpuddles' accident. However, I do find it strange that the accident seems to have occurred directly below the Cailn Ash Heap according to what Dribbage Acquisitions told me. That was the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Third Darkness, as I'm sure you know. It would be helpful for me to visit the site of the accident, but I need the approval of Hensnest or someone from Dribbage Acquisitions to go down. It's not safe for anyone but a healer, I think, to judge by Mr. Barnpuddle's condition." He gestures toward his flasks, one of which seems to hold leeches, the other a vicious yellow substance. "And these, of course."
Aug 5, 2021 9:00 pm
Hildar taps his chin thoughtfully "Well, that at least gives a place to start looking. Was there anything else that made you suspect an Ynfernael influence? Other than the area where the accident occurred that is?" as he talks he moves over to the flasks for a better look, making sure not to touch anything "What is this substance?" though he says the question out loud it seems almost like he was just thinking aloud.
Aug 6, 2021 1:23 am
Gettle's face lights up as Hildar takes an interest in the flask. "This substance? Intriguing, isn't it? I wish I knew what it was... I recovered from the clothing of the men who had the accident. It ate through several contianers before I found a flask that it couldn't dissolve. I've suspended the yellow liquid in an alchemical jelly that keeps it stable enough to work with, but even then, I have to replace the jelly every two or three days. All I can tell so far is that it seems to be some form of mucous, organic in nature, but unlike anything I've ever seen." He shrugs his shoulders and shakes the flask up. The mucous seems to slosh around, coating the sides, and oozing back down. "Is this Ynfernael? I have no idea. Could be draconic. As you'll recall, the Ash Heaps resulted from Dragonfire..."

"Hensnest, you say? I'm guessing she isn't particularly happy to give permission to investigate this ... accident" Nekurr remarks as he looks around the place. "How is Mr Barnpuddles doing? Did you manage to figure how anything what happened? Could it be related to this mucous?". The cleric thinks for a while, trying to figure how what father Gettle knows already "Do you think it could have mind altering properties?"

"Oh, you know how these guild affairs run—Hensnest probably wants the tunnel investigated, but not until Olond stops using non-Guild laborers to continue the work. And she has a right to be alarmed! Mr. Barnpuddle is in dire shape, I'm afraid." He grimaces briefly, but then he's back into scientific-detachment mode. "The poor man's having a hard time breathing, and he has lesions all over his skin. He seems to be of perfectly sound mind, however—aside from the trauma of the explosion and then getting coated in this... goo..." The cleric regards Hildar and sniffles. "I'm afraid this yellow substance is quite caustic, and I'm having a devil of a time finding a way to counteract it. If you think you might have better luck, I can give you a sample. But you'll need some of this alchemical jelly to stabilize it. The stuff's been eating through any instruments I try to use to examine it!"

"Yes, yes, quite astute," Gettle says, cracking his knuckles. "I'm more of an alchemist than divine healer, but I did my best to petition my god Kellos to rid Mr. Barnpuddle of his affliction. Unfortunately, I was only able to ease his pain and stave off death. Something seems to be blocking his fuller recovery." He holds the flask up again. "And I fear it's this goop, as you put it. I fear it's entered his bodily humors, and his body may not be able to fight off the substance much longer..."

Hildar moves to get a closer look at the ‘goop’
OOC:
Ok, wanting to try studying it to see if Hildar can glean anything from it. My initial thought is there may have been something in the books he has access to that describe this, or a similar fluid. Can’t decide if Knowledge (Forbidden) or Alchemy would be the best check though…..would you accept an Alchemy check with a boost for the background reading?
Aug 12, 2021 2:07 am
OOC:
I think either Alchemy or Forbidden (or both) can work. Let's call it a Daunting task for both (PPPP), but you get two boosts for knowing some of the properties and the context of the substance's collection.

Success isn't going to give you THE answer, but instead several possible answers. If you wanted to narrow things down, you'd have to do more dedicated observations over some down time, using an alchemy kit. He has one, so he may let you use it if you ask.

Friendly suggestion, it might be a good idea to ask him for his recipe for the stabilizing alchemical jelly, while you're at it.
Aug 12, 2021 8:55 am
Whilst studying the 'goop' Hildar absently starts asking Father Gettle questions "So you say it's been eating through anything you try to hold it in, is the rate consistent or are some materials more resistant to the corrosion? I've seen some similar discharge from certain plants but the viscosity was different and they were usually greener. I wonder if this could be a result of something growing in proximity to the Ash heap...." it soon becomes apparent his chatting to the man is part of him working through things in his head as he studies the liquid....
OOC:
Will go for Knowledge (Forbidden) at the moment, just trying to get a better idea of this stuff right now. In depth study may come later dependant on whether it seems worthwhile.

"It is odd, isn't it?" the cleric mutters. "Eats through anything without the jelly to stabilize it. I haven't noticed any difference from one material to the next, but can't say I've experimented much... I doubt it's botanical... Nothing grows in Cailn barony, and the Ash Heap is the reason why! But the miners got it all over them after some sort of explosion. That part I can't explain."

No, but remember that there are two groups who have been down there: The miners (accident, strike); the refugee kids (replacement workers hired by Olond after the miners refused to work until the area was made safe).
Aug 13, 2021 1:19 pm

Right, So it looks like there were two different "accidents" then :D

Well, two different events, at least. You're still not sure what exactly occurred with the refugee kiddos, although Nekurr has gotten sensory impressions.

Waiting for any last questions from Hildar before we move on. Anything further, Mcneils5?
Aug 16, 2021 12:02 pm
Hildar looks confused and frustrated but nods in agreement with Father Gettle's conclusions "Yes that would make sense but other than eliminating one thing it doesn't really narrow down the source of this material. There are simply too many variables at the moment.". As he finishes up he enquires with Father Gettle about how he makes up the stabilising jelly.
OOC:
Hildar's got nothing else at the moment, too many things this stuff could be and not enough other data to narrow it down overly yet. He'll hold off taking any of the material for further study as he's not really set up for that at the moment but the stabilising jelly recipe may come in useful if he is willing to share.
Aug 16, 2021 1:17 pm
"So take to Barnpuddle if he's coherent?" Tronus suggests.
Aug 18, 2021 1:44 am

With the sun setting, you decide that one final stop is in order: The Barnpuddle home. The miners live in the Mining Town outside the castle proper, not far from the area where the conflagration hit earlier this morning. Onin Barnpuddle is outside smoking a pipe when you arrive. "Quick, inside!" he whispers. "I'm not supposed to be talking to you."

Aug 19, 2021 3:48 pm
The inside of the cabin reeks of rotting flesh. Aesthetically, it's homey if quaint. A curtain separates the main room—with wooden table, chairs, and washbasin—from an area beyond where the family presumably sleep. The laughter of children playing in the street outside comes through the open windows, but the smell persists. An older Dwarf woman sits at the table. She stares intently at a carrot, which she chops. She doesn't look up and seems upset.

The younger Barnpuddle nods. "Pa's not... Well, maybe it's best if you see him yourself. I warn you, though—it's not pretty."

Aug 20, 2021 2:18 am
The woman's chopping grows more frantic as Onin parts the curtain and bids you to follow him. By the time you reach the back area, you reckon the carrot's been cut, and the chopping is now more of a tic than anything productive.

Beyond the curtain, you see why. In the dim interior of the cottage, Norc Barnpuddle's condition is, frankly, shocking. He lies in a sturdy bed, apparently clinging to life. The Dwarven elder looks almost skeletal, his skin tinted green and oozing pus from multiple lesions. He looks like he's on death's door, even though he must be in middle age for his race, to judge by the age of his son. The poor Dwarf's son, Onin, begins stripping away the ichor-soaked bandages. He applies new ones, making a shushing sound. "Now, now, Pa. These folks have come to see if they might be able to help you."

The three of you find the man's state shocking, but you manage to hold it together. But make no mistake: Norc Barnpuddle's condition is on par with some of the worst injuries you've ever seen, like something out of the horrors of the Third Darkness...

Hildar does note that Onin seems a bit nervous. At first, you wonder if it's because he's embarrassed by his father's condition. But he keeps glancing at the door, so he's likely more concerned that someone saw that his father's having visitors.

The injured man coughs and motions to his son. "Light the damn candle, boy! We've got company." He looks at you with bloodshot eyes. He wheezes as he asks, "So tell me again who you folks are?"

Aug 23, 2021 4:21 pm
OOC:
CESN: A simple Utility spell would be able to "detect magic" and answer the question whether there's a magical element to his affliction, but it would be a simple "yes" or "no" kind of result. Getting more specific than that would be a Formidable (PPPPP) Divine check, since it's essentially doing the same job as the Knowledge (Forbidden) check Hildar did, but perhaps yielding more specific information. I'll upgrade that check, too, if you try it: RPPPP. ;)
"I don't remember much about the accident, to be honest. I'm a blast man. I set alchemical fire charges and blow away rock. It's an old Dwarven secret. But I ain't never been drenched in goop before! Hensnest says she thinks we hit a pocket of air or something, but all I know's I got covered in this stuff." He seems to be getting agitated, and he starts coughing. His son calms him down. "Sorry. I'm good at my job, and I ain't never had this problem before. Uh... So who are you working for again? My son seems to trust you, but I got heaps of folks breathing down my neck."
OOC:

I can adjudicate as suggested, CESN, but I wanted to make sure first -- you could always use the Charm advantages to grant yourself some boost dice (between 1 and 3) to the Divine check. OK, going with this idea.
"Gettle, eh?" The Dwarf wheezes. "Poor bloke means well, but he's out of his depth. No one seems to have any idea what happened down there. And I'm tired of being some pawn in some petty games." The older Dwarf's temples start to pulse as he gets himself steamed up. His son puts a cold compress on his father's head and tries to calm him down.

The older Dwarf continues: "Sorry—the politics of this whole thing drive me mad. Apparently the Dribbage people think they can fix the Cailn curse. Great. More work for my guild. But why does Renash need us to run the tunnel right under the Ash Heaps? Well, I'll tell you why—if it works, he brings uncursed water here, to the castle. He draws settlers. He does an end-run around Nornholt."

As the Dwarf talks, Nekurr focuses on the man's affliction, muttering a prayer to Fortuna under his breath.

Tronus leans into Hildar, "You're the smart type lad, Renash seem like the type to grab some of this up and toss it on his old man and take over in the line of succession early?"
Aug 26, 2021 7:04 am
Nekurr looks around, under the bed and then turns to Hildar "What do you make of this?". He would ask Tronus, but usually that ends with the dwarf making a hammer of it...
Aug 26, 2021 2:04 pm
Hildar just shrugs at Tronus's question "It wouldn't surprise me if that was the play but it could just be an ego thing, the son trying to prove himself to the old man maybe?". As Nekurr joins them he still looks deep in thought before sighing "Why are they taking any guidance from the Dribbages? After everything we dealt with you'd have thought the rest of the family would be persona-non-gratis as it were...."
Aug 26, 2021 4:06 pm

Nekurr finds the underside of the bed quite tight—with such a small cottage, the family no doubt has to make use of every last inch of space they have. Nevertheless, cats have a way of fitting into tight, compact spaces.

OOC:
Could Hildar make up something akin to 'ye olde paracetomol' quickly here, or some sort of concoction that would give the father some relief? Figure he'd have to use their kitchen to do it and maybe a Story Point to have the materials to hand for it...
Aug 27, 2021 1:42 pm
"That why I brought them but well... as you can see, he's definitely not a dwarf." Tronus states point with a very judgy look on his face.
Aug 27, 2021 2:14 pm
OOC:
Yeah, Nekurr's Triumphs were for the vision—they didn't reveal the source of the affliction but some crucial context around what that source is and how it got there. (Remember that Hildar and Tronus don't really know what you saw, as it was in a private note.)

I think a Divine Heal would be welcomed; call it Heal + Restoration for an Average check (PP). (Boost for Component Casting). That might stabilize him for a day (so that his illness doesn't progress); extend that by 1 day for every 2 advantage, extend by a week for each Triumph? No pain relief though; if you want to stabilize + relieve pain, change the check to Hard (PPP), which will also reduce the chances you can extend the effects beyond a day.

If you choose not to do the pain relief, Hildar can always whip up some painkillers in the kitchen. Yes, a SP for the supplies sounds reasonable. Rules say four hours per dose (unless you get some advantages to spend), but why don't we hand-wave that and fold the alchemy concocting into the conversation with this man and his wife? Average check (PP), two setbacks for no alchemy kit.

At first, Nekurr's prayer doesn't seem to have any effect. The Dwarf just looks at the priest of Fortuna with dull eyes. But then he seems to notice the playing card lying on his chest, which the Catfolk cast there. He picks it up and laughs. "Ha! The Queen's Lover! I once won the pot of a lifetime in a guild game with the Queen's Lover. What a bluff! Everyone thought I had a Sweeping Creeper..." Tronus is thinking this would be a lot easier if we just visit the Baron's Son and punch him in the face till he passed out and continue every time he wakes up till his dad is back... probably won't solve most of the problems but it's not like he doesn't need it.

When it looks like she is at a point where she won’t be at risk of chopping her fingers off he coughs politely "Excuse me, I would like to try to mix up something that may be able to help ease Mr Barnpuddle's condition for at least a while. Could I use the room for a few minutes?"
OOC:
well, if he was offering unskilled assistance Remnant could just help stir stuff I suppose lol

The man exhales as he settles into a pillow and sets the playing card down. "That's all above my rank, friend. Alls I know is that Hensnest put us on the job, Dribbage Acquisitions is paying for it, and the baron's son stands to gain if we succeed. None of us ever dealt with Renash, though. Just his assistant, Marseen Olond."

Hildar nods to the woman "Yes, I do feel like it is the least we can do in the situation." and he quickly begins to work. As he busies himself with the work he absently uses his magic to help with the process where he can...as he works he begins to get frustrated as things are not going well...
OOC:
Thinking for flavour more than anything that he'd probably use Utility magic to assist with things like keeping things stirred at a consistent speed or keeping stuff at the right temp. Would probably raise a few eyebrows from Helvig just from his blatant casual use of magic if nothing else....hmmm, the Triumph....I would really like the woman to cool down a bit, maybe seeing us trying to genuinely help makes her come on side a bit if she's got something to share?

I got the impression that Remnant was still back with the patient, but if you would have gone with HIldar, then, yes, feel free to assist. I'm happy to grant an additional boost die for Apothecary (so 2 total).

Love the description of mortars and pestles moving by magic, by the way! No strain for that sort of thing; the rules state that such magical special effects wizardry can be done for "free" essentially as long as it's just set dressing.
The woman's eyes light up at Hildar's display of obvious magical acumen. "Well, maybe if you's got spells and suchlike, you might be able to protect us from any ruffian types that's been threatening us..."

"Do they come around a lot, do they look human, what do they say, and have they damaged anything?" Tronus asks the female dwarf his face showing something it rarely does, a malicious smile.
Sep 8, 2021 7:04 pm
With Tronus's assistance, Hildar is able to overcome the less-than-ideal environment and come up with two potions, enough to keep the injured Dwarf comfortable for at least a couple days. His wife seems all-too-impressed:

"Only person who's visited is that fool Gettle. Thinks leeches are gonna suck the poison out, I suppose. Ain't done nothing but kill his leeches faster and faster. What I'm worrying about is healer care. Oh, yeah—some of Marseen Olond's boys came by, saying she ain't gonna pay the Guild for Norc or the other injured miners if we talk to outsiders. I told Onin not to bring in nobody, but I guess you folks can help with the treatment, so it's not all bad..."
Sep 10, 2021 12:10 am
"Technically Marseen Olond's boys... are outsiders, I'm of the mindset they never were going to pay if they didn't have though. Seems suspicious to say the least." Tronus admits with a frown.
Sep 14, 2021 1:51 am
Onin comes back to your side of the curtain. "Well, Olond's Renash's representative with Dribbage Acquisitions. It's all kind of hazy who's in charge, but Olond's definitely in charge of the tunnel excavation. You won't tell no one you spoke with us, will ya?"
Sep 14, 2021 7:54 am
Nekurr then looks at the boy "We won't tell. It seems like everyone is pointing at this Marseen Olond" Nekurr turns to Helvig "Whatever is going on, Dribbage Acquisitions must know more than they are letting out.". Checking the Norc on final time "We just bough some time for now. We will need to research the proper medicine now that we had the opportunity to loos at the wounds"

The younger Dwarf sits down on a stool and sighs. "Thanks for your help. I was down there, too, but my Pa and the other blast crew took the brunt of the... whatever it was. If you figure out how to help Pa, don't forget Yorin and Frolin Gadawall." His mother takes the concoction made by Hildar and gets the older Dwarf to drink it down. The son continues, "Olond's probably not in her office no more. You'll have to wait till tomorrow to speak to her. But I do hear she likes to get an ale or two after work." He extends a hand to the three of you. "Good luck. And thanks again."
OOC:
Leaving it to you whether you want to meet up with Olond this evening (entailing a visit to a tavern) or in her office in the morning. Other leads are visiting the tunnel site (but expect guards to be there), or tracking down Jacey Tabbins, the third Buzzard's Ford kid who was down there during the second accident.

Jacey Tabbins, since she is Nekurr's little friend and the great pageant winner!!! (right?)

The nuns of St. Durvin's Chapel mentioned that Jacey Tabbins has been coming for charity meals every evening, so you return to the chapel area and exit the castle proper near the path leading to the Buzzard Town shanties. The evening meal service seems to be wrapping up, but you're in luck: You recognize the Buzzard's Ford pageant winner, despite her haggard appearance. She is only a few places back in the queue, waiting for a ladleful of stew while she rocks her body in apparent agitation.
Sep 21, 2021 8:18 am
Nekurr looks around the St. Durvin's Chapel, taking note of everyone who's joined for the charity meal. Besides the Buzzard Town shanties, maybe there would be some baronial "employees", miners or even some of the Dribbage's people sniffing about.

As he notices Jacey Tabbins' agitation, he decides to observe her for a little bit as she waits in the queue.
OOC:
Just checking what she does and if she is agitated because of something/someone in the Chapel. Just to be sure... she is the one who fled after seeing ... the (draconic) horror right?... what's my skill in therapy 🤔

It all happens so fast. While Nekurr is waiting in line for stew, Tronus tries to assess likely paths in or out of the area. His vigilance pays off, as he notices the same group of thugs from the castle corridors moving to block the road leading to Buzzard Town. Jacey Tabbins seems to notice, as well, and she looks ready to run... somewhere.
OOC:
Having a hard time finding a suitable battle map. Imagine you're outside the castle, along its north wall. There's an entrance into the medical ward of the chapel here, with a line of people for stew arrayed outward along a path that leads to Buzzard Town. Buzzard Town is located to the east of the castle. There's another path around the perimeter of the castle to the west that would eventually lead to the mining settlement. Beyond that, there are only hills to the north with footpaths through them. The roads toward Nornholt are on the other side of the castle, leading southwestward.

Tl;dr: The only exits are into the castle, north along footpaths into the hills, west along a path to the mining settlement, or east along a path to the refugee settlement. Renash's grunts are approaching from the direction of Buzzard Ford (from the east).

We're at a potential chase and/or fight. A PC gets to go first!

"Since we're not in the Castle, go in now, or wonder why you bunch of dull rocks are getting cracked against each other. You're boss ever think he should really pay you all for what you're capable of? And stop holding hands and looking confused." Tronus demands spitting in there direction.

The Human in Renash's colors raises his empty hands. "Whoah there, old man! We don't want any trouble. We just wanted to make sure our employee there was feeling OK." He continues moving toward Tronus, hand moving toward his sword but not drawing it. He looks toward Jacey. "You doing all right there, lassie? Come now, girl, you agreed to work for us..."

The girl responds with a rude gesture involving a single finger on her right hand. Nevertheless, she hesitates...

OOC:
I was thinking about he slipping out his true goal in frustration. though unless there is a truer goal, it is pretty obvious what he wants. 3 threats is also enough to learn a fear or desire which we can use to rough him up in socially acceptable ways
Oct 5, 2021 1:25 pm
OOC:
With Tronus stacking his Clever Retort on hers, that gets you to 5 threat, pretty significant. Getting Jacey to talk was actually going to be an issue, so I think I can run with "revealing a motivation" plus use the remaining 2 to get her to open up a bit...
The girl cowers behind Nekurr and trembles. "I don't want to go back into those tunnels! Ever since we went down there, something's been trying to get me—like there's something inside me!"
Oct 5, 2021 1:27 pm
The man shakes his large head. "Now now, love. You're touched in the head, that's all. Ms. Olond just wants to make sure you get the care you need. Now come with us into the chapel..."

Revealing his Desire (to get her to be admitted to the clinic).

Oct 6, 2021 7:28 am
Nekurr sits next to the girl and opens his mouth to talk and persuade the thug that he, a qualified cleric, can take care of the little girl just as well as any ... chapel or whatever, but he is too slow so he has to wait for NPC, NPC and Jacey to go first!

LOL. You all have been treating this as a social encounter so far, so go ahead and try Charm or Negotiation, CESN. :) If you're targeting the thug leader, that's a tall order: RRRP + 2 setbacks. You might try to convince Jacey to go with you instead, in which case you'll roll RRR plus 2 boosts + 2 setbacks for motivations. But that way may lie violence.

Flipside of keeping things loosey goosey for now is that they get to draw weapons and continue approaching.
"Don't listen to 'em, lassie," the goon says, continuing to approach and drawing a mace from his back. His backup men do the same. "We've got to get you to safety."

Despair = This woman shows up. 3 Threat = she doesn't want you anywhere near the chapel.
As you've been talking, the clerics of the chapel have been hastily putting away their pots, bowls, and other meal-related items. The chapel staff hurry into the castle as the tensions rise in the air. Meanwhile, the folks who came to be fed have nearly all left the area. However, one woman remains: a tall, pale Elf in the raiments of a cleric of the chapel. She makes her presence known. "Enough of this. Let Lord Milbank escort the girl into the chapel! She's already been admitted, only she fled at the first opportunity. We have a duty to care for her there, and Lord Milbank is duty bound to see to it that she makes it safely inside. You three, I don't know who you are, but you have no business here. Leave."
Oct 7, 2021 3:07 pm
Nevertheless, Nekurr's overtures seem to have won Jacey over from this Milbank and his cronies. The girl clings to the Catfolk's arm, tears streaming down her face. "Don't let them take me in there! I won't go!"

Milbank and his companions haven't shown any signs of aggression toward the girl—only toward Tronus and Hildar, who have brandished weapons. Nevertheless, they are now within striking distance of the girl should they get around Tronus.

Ah, so they count as one target, as they're a minion group. So no increase necessary there. So you're looking at Attack (P) + Impact (P). They're engaged with an ally, though (Jacey), so that upgrades the check from PP to RP to represent the danger of perhaps hitting her.

So, result is 4 Success, 1 Advantage. 8 damage to them! Not enough to trigger knockdown (that takes 2 advantage), but you do hit! Remember that you have the Lucky Strike talent; spend a Story Point to add +4 to any attack. Up to you if you think it's worth it yet.

1 advantage left; will default to a boost to next PC, unless you specify otherwise.
Nekurr's cards fly in the Orcs' faces. The tactic distracts them just long enough that one of them hits his head on an iron bar extending from the chapel door with a clang. The sigil of Kellos, hanging from the sign, swings around in a wild arc, strikes him again, and sends him crashing to the ground, unconscious. Despite their comrade's state, the other two Orcs continue moving toward the door.
OOC:
That's a PC next. Can be Nekurr again, or either of Tronus and Hildar.

The two remaining Orcs reach for the chapel door just as Tronus swings his sword. The flat of the blade connects with their arms, sending their maces clattering to the ground. Nevertheless, their boss shouts a command: "You oafs! Get her inside!" The Orcs throw the door open.

The Human then turns his attentions toward Tronus. "As for you, I'll teach you some respect..." He swings his mace in a wide arc, finding an opening around the Dwarf's large shield. The blow strikes Tronus in the shoulder!
OOC:
He uses a maneuver to give the minions a free maneuver (open the door). Then that's a hit for 8 damage. 1 Threat to you, though.

By the way: Defense caps out at 4 in this system, so you can't get to 5. The fifth black was from darkness.

Going for an Attack spell on the minion group with the Lighting additional effect, assuming they're at Short range to Hildar. Will be using a Maneuver to Aim for a boost die....
Purple flickers fly around Hildars outstretched arm as he focuses his magic and a bolt of black lightning flys out to connect with the orcs....
OOC:
Ok, this does 11 damage (5 for Intellect, +3 for the Wand, 3 Successes) and I'll use the 4 advantages to trigger the Stun (3) quality twice which will be another 6 points to them (would be Strain but as they're Minions...). Hoping this drops them both....

I'm taking 4 Strain this round as I want to use a second maneuver to keep the Counterspell running (I think I can do that) for +2, and another +2 for casting a spell

The priestess stretches to her full height before the door. "Lord Milbank! Fetch the castle guard! These thugs are dangerous, and I will not allow them to harm this girl!"

She puts one hands on the door and clasps a sigil of Kellos in the other. Her voice takes on an otherwordly tone as her eyes roll back in her head. "Mighty Kellos! May your flames protect the innocents you have placed in our charge!"

The door glows red until it suddenly bursts into divine flames. The heat is palpable! You actually feel your skin and hair being singed just from being nearby. Trying to open that door is likely to be even more painful.

Oct 18, 2021 1:45 pm
OOC:
Yeah, Barrier would work! It's Easy for just Nekurr, but you could extend the effect to one ally by making the check Hard (PPP), or Average (PP) if you move to touch the intended target first.

OOC:
Since I can only take one of the other's with me, I'll just leave them to take care of the elf lady and hope for sweet triumphal advantages!
The door clicks, opens and the half-catfolk walks unhurt. The priestess stares stunned at her powerless magics as one of Nekurr's card floats away from the door. (Did it get stuck on the door when the orc threw it as he was smashed by sigil of Kellos?)
OOC:
PS: There you go! Fortuna smiles at her cats 🐱

Triumph says that "Do something vital ...", could this mean that the stuck card interfered with the Tabithissa's spell and dispelled it? Maybe for a turn or two?

OOC:
Nice roll! But let's parse all this...

I don't think you have enough maneuvers to do everything you're trying to do in this single turn. Just making sure I understand what you're doing. First, there's the matter of whether the door is locked... :) There are two possibilities, but it boils down to you choosing between buffing an ally in addition to yourself, or you buffing only yourself and then using the Triumph to say the door is unlocked.

Re-reading your post, I think everything is fine except for the door being locked (which was my intention). To have it unlocked is going to take the Triumph.

Option 1 is Action: Cast Barrier spell on self; Maneuver 1: open door; Maneuver 2: go into the chapel (no strain due to Catfolk, but assuming you spend the Triumph to say the door is unlocked). In this scenario, you get 3 advantage to spend, and some of that might be used to disadvantage the priestess, but not to dispel her barrier for your allies. [I think this is what you've narrated?]

Option 2 is Maneuver 1: Engage with Hildar or Tronus, Action: Cast spell (with +1 purple added onto what you rolled to buff both you and your ally), and Maneuver 2: Engage with door. In this scenario, you may have to use the Triumph to buff the ally, depending on what the second purple does. [rereading your post, I don't think you meant to do this.]

So does that work? You're inside, the Triumph made the door unlocked, and you have 3 advantage to spend. (Barrier's effect is increased by excess successes, not advantages, so you still have those to use.) Those can certainly be used to have Jacey wiggle free of the Orc.

Oct 19, 2021 2:44 pm
OOC:
Yeah sounds good. I was a bit unsure of the specifics of the situation/spell. I think Jacey wiggling free is a nice touch for 3 adv. Maybe the others would prefer some extra dice though?
Oct 19, 2021 4:39 pm
OOC:
Will have Jacey get free then.
Nekurr's sudden appearance inside the chapel surprises not only the Elf outside, but also the remaining Orc. Jacey takes the opportunity to wiggle free of his grasp and seems ready to run... somewhere. Inside, the clerics are busy attending to sick patients. But all the commotion certainly has them ready to act, especially with one of their members outside screaming bout "bandits" and "invasion."

Outside, Hildar, Tronus and Milbank continue to feel like their flesh is being roasted away by being near the chapel door.
OOC:
1 Wound to Tronus, Hildar, and Milbank (Soak does not apply). (This penalty will end once you move out to medium range, or dispel the door flames.)

Note that I've added several NPC slots to the end of the order. Continuing the fight in the chapel is going to bring the clerics down on you, as in their mind, Jacey is an escaped patient being returned to care.

That's around to another PC. It can be Nekurr again if you have something in mind to do immediately, CESN. Otherwise, Hildar or Tronus is up!

OOC:
Not really, as she's ready to hit the dust! The bigger issue is she still has to contend with the flaming door. And there are lots of initiative slots before hers, so someone's sure to grab her again. You might try Barrier on her (to resist the door). Or Augment to basically do to her what the Elf did to the door—causing pain to anyone who touches her?
Oct 21, 2021 7:57 am
OOC:
Time to use nekurr's secret ability then!
Looking around the chapel, Nekurr realizes that there are a little too many clerics. And with them being clerics of Kellos, and Kellos being generally a nice guy... he may have run out of luck... which he usually takes as a divine sign to get out of there quickly... something that happens frequently when he is putting Fortuna's teaching to practice at the temple (an interesting name for a gambling den!)

"Oh hi there fellow men of faith!" he quickly tries to identify the cleric that is in charge. "It seems there has been some sort of misunderstandign here..."

1 advantage remains on your roll, CESN. Let me know what you'd like to do with it.
The familiar voice of Sister Mabel Rite pierces through the din: "Stand down, healers, until I know what's going on."

So, my reading is that your talent affects only the one target, so Mabel will hear you out and can get the minion clerics to stand down for the time being. But the Orc, the Elf, and the noble outside are unaffected. But you have at least bought yourself some time inside the building.

Yeah, works been kicking my ass a bit recently. I'm not sure the best way to play this now that Sister Mabel has made an appearance. The only thing I can think to do would be to spend a manoeuvre to shift to short range of Milbank and try to lay a Curse with the Paralyzed additional effect. Wouldn't stop them but would limit them to 1 manoeuvre a turn whilst Hildar keeps it going....if he can get it off that is (would be rolling 1 red and 4 purples assuming nothing gets upgraded). If peeps think it's a good idea to give it a shot I'll throw it down.....
Oct 23, 2021 1:24 am
OOC:
Slowing him would probably only delay him getting the guards, unless one of you tackled him. You could Conjure a cage or something around him. But if there's a danger of running afoul of the law (or local hierarchies) for assaulting a noble, that would compound the issue.

I'd say delay him if the hope is that Sister Mabel might see your side and intervene with the authorities. Let him go if you're willing to go to jail or become fugitives for a while. (Even the Sister Mabel route may lead to one of those outcomes, but at least there's a chance it won't).

Hildar tries to craft the arcane energies around Milbank to stop the man in his tracks. The Elf senses the man is somehow resistant to the magic, but Hildar redirects the energies just in time. Suddenly Milbank seems to be moving as if his boots were made of stone. His eyes bulge out, but nevertheless, he continues plodding down the path. Hildar realizes he'll need to continue to follow him if he wants the paralyzation to continue once the man makes a bit more headway.

Through the flaming ring of the door, it's somewhat difficult to hear what's going on inside, but Sister Tabithissa does seem to hear her comrade call for the clerics to stand down to find out what's going on. She shouts inside: "Girl! Run! Get away from these three before they harm you!"

The girl seems to feel a surge of energy. She seems poised to make a run for it. Where to is anybody's guess...

OOC:
I think Leadership, as she's quite spooked. Average (PP) check. You can take 2 boosts for her desire to get out of there, but also 2 setbacks, as she's injured and scared. Picking her up will be 2 maneuvers, one to engage, a second to lift her. That means you won't be able to run until next turn.

Just another reminder that fleeing is going to make you fugitives, forcing you to avoid the castle guard and anyone affiliated with the clerics or the baron's court. (Not trying to dissuade you, but want to make consequences clear before we get there!)

What are the options to hide? I guess we're not welcomed back at Argus Inquiries (or that is too obvious/accessible). Not welcome to our "house arrest" castle rooms. So Baron and our boss are out of pocket I figure. Son's doing shady stuff, they came from the refugee camp looking for her.
We don't know what she knows or what they really wanted, get back to work or keep quiet about what you saw. We have some inclinations so if it's not within the castle the Thistlerocks?
Nov 2, 2021 3:55 pm
OOC:
You can certainly go to Nornholt if you want (the Thistlerocks, Lady Dribbage, and Argus Inquiries HQ are all located there). But the town is a couple days' ride from the castle, and conducting any sort of investigation from there will be tough. You still haven't spoken to Renash (baron's son) or Marseen Olond—although doing so now is going to take some trickery or aggressive tactics. You also have the tunnel site that remains unexplored. All of that stuff is at the castle or its environs.

But I think Hildar has a fancy new teleport spell he hasn't used? If you really want to get way away for a short time (and take Jacey with you), that's a possibility.

Barring flight to Nornholt, though, your best bets to lie low are either with the refugees (Buzzard Town), or in the miner camp. Hildar also has the Mask spell, so you could try that to at least get around for a time. Story Points might open up other possibilities.
Nov 2, 2021 4:17 pm
OOC:
Ah that sounds too far away then. Marseen and Renash although someone we might want to talk to also I feel might just crossbolt us to the face. I'll wait for McNeil to weight in.
Nov 3, 2021 2:57 pm
OOC:
Yeah, I do have Teleport but it's risky to use - it's a base Daunting Arcana test and I'll be rolling with 3 Setback dice so I mainly took it as a last resort thing to try and use if we are really in a tight spot. For the moment it might be best to head to Buzzard Town to regroup, Hildar would push for at least checking out the tunnel site before we leave the immediate area. Can always try dropping a mask on us if needed to keep us out of sight

looks like the consensus is lay low in refugee camp
