2: Return to the Monastery of the Iron God

Feb 7, 2023 3:37 am
Day Seven. Early morning. Somewhere in the Eastreach Province.

After some negotiating and sizing up one another, the newly-formed party hired Gillaug, Gilsbead, and Wardhall for a set fee rather than a future share of treasure. They agreed, also, to give Czespecem a few days to recover his battered body, during which the remainder of the party was able to take upon themselves whatever activities they wished. Those four days were rather boring for the treasure-hungry adventurers, but necessary. At the beginning of the final day, the dwarf finally feels that crick in his back pop during his morning stretch, and he is prepared to go. The rest are already waiting for him, and rather antsy.

Halfway through the day, as the sun is high in the sky, you come across a series of guards escorting a wagon full of prisoners. Horse thiefs from Rorikstead? No, and not political prisoners either, by the looks of them. The men inside the wagon are dressed in hunting leathers. A sergeant on horseback leads his three foot soldiers, and the driver says something to the rest in a quiet tone. The sergeant approaches. "You need to clear the way, our vehicles are too wide and my cargo too important. Move aside now."
OOC:
You still have Lith's cart and mule.

"What have you got there? Poached some poachers maybe?" Czespecem has a hand on the mule's bridle, trying to guide her and the cart to a solid patch of roadside.
Feb 7, 2023 2:54 pm
The sergeant sees you trying to move, ad he calls over his shoulder while steering his horse back to his retinue, "Aye, poachers indeed. Let them be a lesson to you all."

The two guards you hired look with contempt upon the prisoners, while Wardhall turns away. He seems frustrated by the situation, though it was well known that sailors had a penchant for losing freedom.
OOC:
Don't worry about not knowing what is or isn't protected lands. That isn't important in this game. I've left the outside world intentionally invisible.
Feb 7, 2023 3:49 pm
OOC:
Pretty sure Lith only had a mule, unless a cart is included in the price!

Removing 2 GP from Eagerwish's inventory for the hireling payment.
The druid follows the dwarf's example and takes his own mule away from the road, not commenting on the situation. This is not why they are here, and he is happy to let the group go and then continue on their journey.
Feb 8, 2023 12:07 am
Nin clears the road without protest. "Poor sots. But, better them than any of us," he says under his breath after the last of the wagons pass."
Feb 8, 2023 7:03 am
Being Halfling Wilric as well turns his head away from the caravan as it passes, "I bet my last gold these are not poachers." he says quietly almost to himself.
Feb 8, 2023 4:16 pm
With the guards and prisoners passing by and then gone, the new group continues along the path to the ruined monastery. Around sunset do they cross soldiers on patrol, a welcome sight on an often dangerous road. They, too, pass by without incident. Soon, you find yourself standing in the dark with the monastery looming before you. Your weary legs beg for you to rest, but the promise of treasure is a powerful siren calling to you. What do you do?

Day Seven. Late evening. Somewhere in the Eastreach Province.
Feb 8, 2023 8:58 pm
Horace looks upon the monastery with determination.
"Well, we have finally arrived. Let us not waste time and enter now."
He pauses briefly to consider something before continuing.
"We should steel ourselves before entering though. I will lead a short time of prayer to the gods to strengthen our wills. That will give us the edge we need to slay the vile beasts that lay within.
Feb 9, 2023 10:14 am
You can practically hear Wilric roll his eyes, but he does admire the man’s enthusiasm. "Any little bit of help is always welcomed." the Halfling says as he sits on a rock not to far away and waits, he does raise an eyebrow as Wardhall shows huge amounts of exuberant energy during the prayer. ‘Sailors!’ he thinks with a sign.
Feb 9, 2023 11:14 am
Eagerwish is not that eager to continue on without rest, however he also refuses to get kicked out of another group. He thus binds his mule's bridle nearby and checks through his gear.
Feb 9, 2023 2:20 pm
The guards and sailor, despite having been hired by other members, look between Horace and Czespecem. On the one hand, the knight had energy ad charisma. On the other, the dwarf had survived the crypt once before. They wait to move on until they know what the plan is.
Feb 11, 2023 5:38 pm
"With our numbers, we should be able to best the goblins that beset my prior party," Czespecem ventures. "And with them slain, we'll be able to remove the valuable tapestries unbothered. That will be a start to cleaning out the complex, and the tapestries can fund a bigger expedition."
Feb 12, 2023 10:16 am
Wilric shrugged at the dwarf’s plan it seemed as good as any, though he doubted what some mouldy tapestries would fetch on the market. "Who knows what these goblins Maybe horsing as well." he said simple to show agreement with the said plan.
Feb 12, 2023 1:43 pm
The the group in more or less agreement, the enter the complex and Czespecem finds it undisturbed at first glance. Who knows what reinforcements may have come in the week he had been gone from the place?

You find yourselves in the entrance hall, with two doors and one secret passage through the statue's jar. What do you do?
OOC:
If you are just charging back to the goblin's lair, I can fast forward you.
Feb 12, 2023 1:55 pm
"Do you think we can get in and get the drop on them" Nim asks Czespecem. "We are many, but I would just as soon sneak in quietly and take them out one at a time, if we can."

"Or perhaps lure one or two out and then fall upon them when it's to our advantage," he teases with a smile.

He then relates a ploy to send a single person forward, the fastest, and then flee as soon as the goblins notice them. Meanwhile, the rest of the party awaits in an area where they can capitalize on sneak and rear attacks.
Feb 12, 2023 2:11 pm
Eagerwish strokes his stubble as he hears out Nim's plan.
"You think they are still going to be here?"
Feb 12, 2023 4:00 pm
"Why wouldn't they?" Nim asks. To Czespecem, "Wait, did it look like they lived here or we're just passing through?"

Eagerwish shrugs his shoulders.
"Dunno, it's hard to imagine someone living in a place like that. You got nowhere to farm, and I'd say you have about the same chance of hunting something as becoming the hunted thing... Actually I think the second chance is greater."
OOC:
I vaguely remember DM mentioning somewhere that the goblins were looters and may have meta-gamed here under assumption Czespecem would have told us. If that is the case, apologies!
Feb 13, 2023 4:11 pm
"Really, I'm not sure," Czespecem demurs. "It's true that they may merely have been looking for loot, as we were." He pauses a moment. "I don't think I mentioned this, but in a room near the tapestries, I had a vision from the Iron God. He appeared as a moving statue all of iron ... he wants the catacombs cleansed of evil, and will reward whoever does the task. It would be ironic if the goblins already had accomplished it!"
Feb 14, 2023 4:10 pm
Horace stops his praying when he hears this. "See, we are indeed blessed by the gods. It doesn't matter how those goblins live in there, all that matters is that they die. Their evil must be stopped. Czespecem, if you would be so kind as to guide us to those goblins, I will lead the
Purge of these vile creatures.
Feb 14, 2023 4:38 pm
OOC:
I just need some info before you return to the tapestry chamber. Are you checking doors for traps again? Are you listening at each door again? Are you taking the most direct path that the dwarf knows?

Day Seven. Late evening. Monastery of the Iron God.

The party stands before the ruined monastery, most for the first time. For Czespecem, however, there are memories of what had occurred the last time he explored within. The group steps inside and begins their cautious approach to the tapestry room, hoping to catch the goblins unawares.

With a slow movement- checking each door for traps and listening to what may lie beyond- it takes roughly an hour before you find yourselves in the secret room with the tapestries; Czespecem notices that there are no bodies present. At the door that led to the goblin lair, they wait and listen, but are confident that nothing is behind the portal. Wherever the remaining goblins had fled, it was not back to this spot. Inside the room, there is still no sign of a fight other than disturbed dust on the floor and the splattering of blood. A single door awaits to the south. Behind it, the sound of goblins.

Eagerwish wishes eagerly to make a killing blow, but a wish is all that is. The hirelings leap to action, and a sickening crunch resounds from Wardhall's mace as it crushes a goblin.

Even Czespecem manages to take advantage of the situation, with his blessed shovel cleaving a goblin violently; the keened bladed end slicing through the creature effortlessly. The five remaining goblins scream in terror at the horror beset upon them, for three of the dead had told the others of the damned dwarf! The Goblin Scourge was here, and they must flee! As two of the three goblins fall, the final survivor scurries into the next room. It is easy enough to overtake him and put him out of his misery, thus ending the goblin menace... or so you hope. A door to the south stands closed before you, and there is still the door heading east from the tapestry room. Or, if you are happy with your spoils, there is the way out and back to town. A nagging feeling in the back of Czespecem's mind tells him there is more work to do.

End of Combat

You find yourselves in another room that seems to be surrounding the tapestry chamber, with a trail of dead goblins behind you. In this chamber, underneath ruined tapestries and blankets, lie the bodies of Czespecem's fallen companions and the goblins killed earlier. Altogether there are seventeen dead goblins, and several small piles of treasure uncleverly hidden.

There is a silver goblet, a necklace, two potions of unknown quality, two garnets, a jade pendant, ten pounds of grave-trinkets in a sack, 160gp in coin, and 2000sp. There are also three tapestries of fine, if old, quality still hanging in one of the previous chambers. You also find a small pile, likely the goblin's original treasure; six forks, five spoons, and a rusting dagger.

It is a quiet journey back through the tapestry room and to the entrance to the keep with treasure in hand. Mar 7, 2023 2:50 pm
The night passes by as each watch keeps hidden from prying eyes. At one point some noises can be heard coming from the monastery, but they do not emerge from the walls. Otherwise, it is a peaceful night.

The next morning comes and with it a day of travel. The tapestries are heavy and awkward, but the mule (without a cart, as was corrected) bears the load with little complaint. Sometime in the morning the group passes a small troupe of hooded figures who seem to be more concerned with their hushed conversation than anything with you. And later, a man on horseback leading a chained and gagged prisoner passes you, but he makes a point of turning down any conversation.

Eventually you find yourself outside familiar doors. From your time at this roadside inn, you know that there are frequently traders that pass through here, and also there is a man who operates out of here selling basic provisions. The innkeeper also offers a lockbox service, but it costs 5% per week.

Mar 16, 2023 3:18 pm
The evening passes with much haggling and revelry. The ale flows freely in exchange for your hard earned money. The morning comes, and along with it a hangover. But today is a day of walking, and so there are few worries. The tavern is emptier in the morning, though some travelers are to be found having breakfast. It is noted that none at the tables seem to be for hire, and also that the elf, Nim, has vanished. It is possible he had said his goodbyes the night before, but that night is mostly a blur.

Sometime around noon as you are halfway along the road, you hear a rustling from the brush nearby. The bright light off the day shows several figures creeping through the treeline towards you. It would appear to be an ambush, but you have detected it just in time! Coming in two groups from both ahead and behind you, they seem to be trying to surround you. "We'll go partners with you," Czespecem follows up on Horace' sally. "With the lot of us each taking one share, all who survive can walk away wealthy. The bloody work will go easier with more hands."
Mar 16, 2023 11:49 pm
There is some hemming and hawing, some bickering and yelling, and eventually the bandits come to an accord with you. You'll lead them to the monastery (or wherever it is you told them the treasure lay) and gather as much loot as you can. They do not seem interested in being your friends, however, and only seem to view this as a business venture. And so you set out once more.

Hours later, you notice further up the trail the outline of a horseman and large retinue approaching. The distance makes it hard to count, but best estimates are twelve footmen alongside the mounted man. The bandits beside you look apprehensive.

What do you do?
Mar 17, 2023 2:28 am
Wilric was impressed with Horace’s ability to attract followers, even these one which may end up stabbing us in the back. The Halfling will be keeping an eye on this lot.

Seeing the nervous tension building upon the bandit’s face at the sight of the new arrivals, he turns to the bandit Leader. "Move your men to the side of the road, once there kneel and bow your heads. Don’t look up." He then turns to Horace, "The Lord coming down the road is all yours Horace, keep his attention on you."

Wilric joins the Bandits on the side of the road . . .
OOC:
Hopefully if they keep their heads down, the bandits won’t be recognised. Plus hopefully the Lord is full of himself as sees this as a sign of due respect.

OOC:
As the group approaches us, what can we tell about them. Is it some sort of traveling noble or just a group of mercenaries?
Mar 19, 2023 11:06 pm
The bandit troupe does as Wilric suggests and pulls to the side of the road and prepares to take a knee. The kneeling will also do the favor of hiding their faces, as it is likely several of them are wanted men. The approaching men come closer and it is evident that they are a foot patrol belonging to the Eastreach Province. The scroll-and-coin emblem is present on the chest of the horseman's gleaming plate, and the footmen are checkered with the black and purple that marks them of the Eastreach Province.

As they approach, they seem to take little notice of those who stood off the road for them, though there is still some distance between them and you. The bandits kneel and bow their heads, in preparation for the patrol. It is a simple but clever ruse, as those outside the law would not be caught out in the open like this. Horace can see that the horseman is likely a sheriff, which implies some form of nobility.

"Hail, sir knight," he calls to Horace as he nears. "What brings you and yours to this road so far from, well, anything?"
Mar 20, 2023 4:46 pm
Kneeling alongside Wilric, the druid leans and whispers to the hobbit.

"Should we maybe let them know these are bandits? Could save us from them stabbing us in the back..."
Mar 20, 2023 6:00 pm
"Hail and well met" Horace responds as he looks the group up and down. "We are but simple servants of the gods on a most righteous mission. We are cleansing an old monastery of the sinister and wicked creatures that lie within. Though we might miss the comforts of the city, our souls will be nourished and strengthened by following the gods will. What about yourself? Surely you must be on an important mission to be out here. "

He seems to be eagerly anticipating what the noble says. Surely they also be on a righteous mission.
Mar 21, 2023 3:56 am
The sheriff frowns as he arrives. Hrmph. "Bad business, that monastery. It's good that you are going to clean it out, as I would be tasked with it sooner or later. But for now, I hunt for those that would do harm to those on the road. Bandits and wolves, mostly. If you delve in those parts, be alert for there are secrets that have been hidden from sight since before I was a lad. I will pass along a story that I heard as a child. Bathing in the fountain of the priests will grant protection against the undead." He nods at Horace, then begins to lead his patrol away. Several of the footmen look curiously at the bandits and your company, but don't speak up.
OOC:
You have an opportunity to sell them out before I continue your travel.
Mar 21, 2023 9:53 am
Wilric leans in towards Eagerwish, "You maybe right, but they will also make good fodder for the beasts inside the ruins. It is a hard choice but I feel if a few of them die in my stead the better."
Mar 21, 2023 11:19 am
Eagerwish snorts silently.
"Pretty sure they gonna send US to meet the monsters first."
Mar 21, 2023 12:35 pm
"Do it." Wilric whispers as he turns and stands behind the kneeing Bandits. He gets ready to draw his bow.
Mar 21, 2023 1:05 pm
"Shoulda become the fuckin' woodcutter like ma wanted," Eagerwish growls in whispered breath as he raises up to a standing position.

"M'lord, if I may," as he says this, the exiled druid moves to the other side of the road, to get away from the bandits, "that is only half true. While some of us are indeed on this holy mission Mr. Knight speaks of, others are mere brigands that we had to bribe with our knowledge of the Monastery's location so that they would not slit our throats!"
Mar 21, 2023 2:18 pm
Without hesitation or doubt in their minds, the patrol draws steel and puts it to flesh! The bandits leap up from their positions and prepare to defend themselves. Within a matter of moments, it is a chaotic melee!

Round One of Combat

Patrol (Sheriff, Sergeant x2, Footman x10)

The foot patrol leaps into action and begins clanging metal against metal. The bandits defend themselves as best they can, but the patrol is better armored and almost equally numbered. Without knowing who is who, the patrol seems to target anyone present, aside from Horace and Eagerwish who had spoken up. To that end, three bowmen are slain by the sword, along with one spearman. With shock, you see that Wardhall takes a glancing blow, and poor Gillaug takes a stray blade through the chest and dies.
OOC:

Horace looks towards his companions, "What say all of you, shall we venture forth now or set up camp here?"
Mar 28, 2023 1:46 pm

With more voices urging to continue on, the party moves forward towards the ruins. Upon arrival, at the end of the day, they can just barely make out the glow of a small fire from behind a rocky outcropping, likely some travelers that had happened upon the site and decided to stop for the evening. Wardhall seems skeptical of investigating, suggesting instead that you camp on the far side of the ruins; he is clearly shaken from the fight.
Medwyn and Theophroneus, you had met each other in a tavern some weeks north, and had heard the rumors of this destroyed monastery. It took you some time to make your way here, and along that road did your companions meet their ends. You now sit here by your fire, eating some of the last of your rations, hoping that a new plan comes along. For you recognize it is far too dangerous to explore within with such a small party. If only some adventurers would fall into your laps.
Mar 29, 2023 8:18 pm
Theophroneus (despite his mouthful of a name) is a taciturn, mostly-white-haired gentleman in his 50's. His armor and his skin are both leathery, and his worn backpack full of adventuring gear leans up against the log on which he sits. He is idly inspecting his shield and battle-axe for any signs of wear, tending to them in the firelight.

Taking a break to look around at the empty wilderness in the gathering dusk, he says to Medwyn "I guess we're a bit early for the party." The hint of a smile creeps across his deeply-lined face, as he goes back to fussing over his gear.
Mar 30, 2023 1:39 am
"Poor form, indeed. I am always fashionably late if I can help it. I should hope our gracious hosts will not be too put out."

Medwyn runs a hand through meticulously coifed curls as he reclines against a tree trunk. He's maybe half Theophroneus' age, and his clothes are a touch too fine for traveling. An open wine bottle rests on a flat stone at his right, and a book bound in rich dyed purple leather and embossed in silver rests on his lap. He's using it as a writing surface to scratch out notes in strange characters on a blank parchment, seeming to puzzle over them.

While he certainly isn't silent, Wilric is confident in the shadows he lurks within. Some snapping of small twigs beneath his feet later, he finds himself looking at a campfire with an impeccably groomed man in robes and a warrior of no weak heart sitting beside. They discuss a party that they were possibly invited to, or had missed? It's hard to tell, and confusing to think about.
Both Medwyn and Theophroneus hear some twigs snap nearby, too loud to be caused by a small woodland animal, but when they look around there is nothing to be seen.

For the sake of getting to the action, we don't have to dwell too much on this.

Medwyn's ears prick up. He puts his writing materials to the side and calls out to the night in no particular direction:

"Come out of the shadows and sit down with us, won't you? We've a fire and wine of an excellent vintage, and nothing much of value besides. In any case, if you mean to rob us I'm afraid you'll get more than you bargained for."

Wilric’s ears prick up at the offer of wine, "One can not be too safe now, can one? And one who offers a fine wine is always a safe option." The Halfling give his best winning smile as he comes out of the shadows.
Mar 31, 2023 12:23 pm
Theophroneus looks up, raises an eyebrow, and shifts his pack over to make room for the newcomers. He gives the impression that he either knew there would be more coming, or that he's just used to random adventurers showing up outside of ruins with bad reputations.

"See? Told you. We were just a bit early, that's all."

He looks appraisingly at Wilric, and nods "Always good to have one of the little-folk in dark, dangerous places." He goes back to checking his gear.

The night passes with little issue, after the newly-combined parties spend some time talking. In a bizarre coincidence, both are here primarily for the same reason... to get rich, or die trying. All except Horace, of course. And so they rest through the night, dreaming of the riches to come.

The morning comes, and along with it some breakfast and stretching. Once they make their way back into the ruins, they follow the same path and check any doors they had closed behind them. Eventually they find themselves once more in the room where they had found some treasure previously, after the fight with the goblins. A door awaits to the south, but there had also been the eastern door from the tapestry room.

With Theo leading the way, the party follows the hallway to the east and finds that it merely loops around the cluster of rooms they had been investigating. The dimensions don't quite add up to what they have seen, though there is still the door in the tapestry room (the octagonal room) that might fill in that space. It takes very little time to loop back around and into the octagonal room, where one door remains unopened. The two thieves begin their work of searching and listening, and after several minutes shake both their heads. No traps nor sounds were found nor heard. As Theo opens the door, it becomes quite clear why neither were found. Ten skeletons stand armed inside this 20x20 foot room, and their heads swivel towards you immediately. Their rusted swords glint menacingly in the lantern light.

Well, that should hold them, I think. Never can tell exactly how long, though. I'm afraid physical altercations are not my forte, so I welcome input from the more rugged members of our party at this juncture.

Are we able to position ourselves so that only one of the skeletons can stand at the hallway at any given time and try to decapitate them one-by-one Czecspecem style? May be a little wonky initiative-wise, but could perhaps make sense narratively if we take turns with the attacks?

He sheepishly retrieves it and clears his throat before assuming an obviously untrained defense posture, with his feet too close together. He is, at least, pointing the dagger in the right direction, though.
OOC:
New character art for my boy Medwyn. I used to have hair not altogether dissimilar to this, haha.

The party creates a formation around the door and discusses battle tactics as they wait for the door-enchantment to fade. Forty seconds is all it takes, when suddenly the door crashes open and skeletons begin pushing through. You are prepared, and only allow one to make its way out as another enters the doorway. The nine that are not able to exit seem to have basic spatial reasoning, as they reach through and try to attack without any luck, but do not just shove against each other.

OOC:
The way we'll do this is I'll have everyone who is trying to make an attack get to attack, and then I'll work it out on my end. It may not be true to form, but it's a good strategy and I'd hate to see it wasted. Plus, there's still a good chance a few will survive and take some of you down with them.

OOC:
I don't imagine Medwyn will be making an attack as long as there are still more martial types in the front line blocking the door. Unfortunately, he has somewhat exhausted his usefulness in these circumstances, hehe.

Two skeletons down, out of ten. This isn't the prettiest combat, but I'm going to assume that for each skeleton that dies another pops up into its place. That should keep us from stalling out waiting for another to walk in a full round later.

Yeah we can do that. I have a bunch of oil as well, so it's not a precious resource.

The combined assault of the Horace, Eagerwish, and Theo is enough to crush yet another skeleton, but more continue to pour forth. A plan to torch them with burning oil begins hatching in a matter of moments. Meanwhile, another skeleton comes forth and finds Horace in his path. A series of attacks are halted by the paladin's shield.

Sweet. By the way @cowleyc, are you just keeping track of init., rounds, etc. behind the screen, or are we being somewhat loosey-goosey with action order in combat? The lit flask flies into the next room and crashes onto one of the skeletons. The creature bursts into flames which char the bones, but the stoic figure does not scream. It does not seem to recognize the pain, though its movements do slow. Oh man, the last skeleton had exactly two hit points!
The final undead creature collapses and the monastery goes silent. No more clacking of bones, no more whispers of deadly blades. Behind the skeletons, illuminated by the slowly dying pool of oil that had been lit earlier, is a 20x20 room with an additional 10x10 alcove to the east. Valuable-looking carpets are rolled up against one wall, five in all. Czespecem's keen dwarf eyes notice a hidden door in the alcove leads east. The dwarf begins searching the door for traps as Wilfric listens for anything within. After some times passes, both shake their heads no. The door and chamber seem to be clear.

Inside, a 30x20 chamber stands silent and cold, without the menace of the skeletons. Three treasure chests are neatly set side-by-side against the far wall.

"If this is just a taste it could set us up well for the future. We probably need to get as much back as we can, get some more mules and possibly a cart."

He takes a hand full of slivers and allows them to drop out of his hand back into the chest, "We will need a better bank then the Inn."

The cart and mule idea is perfect, but we'll need to carry as much as we can now to secure those back in town."

So, it sounds like it's everyone's favorite: math time! I'm taking 30 pounds of coins. That brings it down to 680lbs. How much can the mule carry? I don't see anything in the SRD, but for some reason I want to say it's 300lbs. If we divide the remaining treasure between the two chests, that's 340lbs each. Maybe if the rest of the PCs grab as much coin as they can...? Just spitballing.

May 7, 2023 10:18 pm
OOC:
OSE has mules carrying 200lbs at full speed, or 400 at half speed. I like that. Half speed is about what some of you are doing anyways, so that won't make much of a difference.
May 7, 2023 11:45 pm
OOC:
Excellent. In that case, Medwyn's mule, Martha, will take on 400lbs of treasure.
May 8, 2023 1:48 pm
The party begins loading themselves with treasure with the intent to drag it out to the mules that seem to mysteriously grow in number. Some of you wonder, do mules undergo division? And it is while you are lost in this thought that you notice the two humanoids shambling towards your party. You had made it to the 40ft-long diamond-shaped room down several turns of the same hallway leaving the vision-room.

The figures have aged and torn skin without pallor, ancient clothing that seems close to vanishing itself, and wield clubs of aged wood. The clothing almost appears to be robes that have been eaten away over the ages. There is no spark of life in their faces, but still they move towards you.

The shuffling of feet makes Wilric turns from jamming coins into his pack. He looks around spotting the Shambling Dead and shakes his head, "Of course." he says with exasperation.

Popping up to his feet he draws his bow, releasing two arrows in quick succession at the Zombie Theo is attacking . . .

Several of your party members stand around shocked by the sudden appearance of the zombies! The remaining zombie shambles towards Theo and clumsily swings its rotting arms at the man, being easily avoided.

With only one zombie remaining, Medwyn sees a prime opportunity to try a maneuver he's been perfecting. He again unsheathes the decorative dagger at his belt, closes enough distance to get in range, and hurls it at the undead foe. The weapon flies in a tumbling, lame-duck arc, making it evident he hasn't practiced quite enough.

Between the overloaded party and the clumsy zombie, the melee continues for some time. You continue to hack away but fail to release the creature of anything vital to its existence. Medwyn, however, darts in just in time to arc his dagger over the head of the dwarf and it sticks in the creature! Perfect shot! But now it has the dagger!

An arrow hits its target and a zombie collapses to the ground, its energy expended. With the halls clear and treasure still heavy, the party finishes their retreat to the entrance of the monastery. It is still fairly early in the day, getting closer to noon than not. You can either bury the treasure out here, or return to the town for safe keeping. There are other options, of course.

As you look around and weigh options, you notice that Wardhall had fallen back asleep under a stable pile of rubble, and was just now hearing you approach and waking. "Oh, sorry there, I don't know what came over me."
OOC:
Also I totally forgot that Wardhall was still alive!

We had decided to load down our mules, correct? Proceeding under that assumption, but just stop me if not.
Medwyn offloads his first haul of treasure into the saddlebags of Martha the mule, who looks none too enthused about her increased burden.

Yeah that was my understanding, as well. Load up the mules, and head back to town.
Theo helps his comrades load up and secure the treasure to their pack animals, excited to get back to town.

You begin the long travel of returning to the roadhouse by way of the Low Road. Several hours pass before you come across a strange sight indeed; a knight and his retinue standing over a pair of ogres that they had slain. They seem quite occupied with dragging the massive corpses from the road, and don't seem to notice you as you pass. You see the glint of gold as a squire shiftily counts through a pouch that you suspect the knight was unaware of.

You rest for the night not too far from the safe structure, but do so because you recognize the danger of traveling this road at night. Eventually you make it back around noon the following day and find a bustling tavern with many enjoying their ales. You are dirty and tired, and missing two hirelings that seemed to be known around here. The bartender recognizes several of you and gives you a questioning look from across the room.
