Chapter 1 - Leaving Dunova

Jan 3, 2024 6:12 pm
Our story begins on an airship sailing above the forest surrounding the city of Dunova. The airship is a decent size, having three decks with a storage hold and private quarters, though unarmed as a merchant vessel likely may be. It's a mixture of metal and wood, though undeniably less armoured than one of the Dunovan warships.

Around you clouds drift lazily in an otherwise blue sky. A sense of wistful adventure hangs around you, without a single concern. The sun is shining, and up here the warmth combines with the chill breeze for a satisfying mix.

And far below you the forest unfurls. It’s known as one of the greatest and oldest forests on the entire continent of Firsland. It divides the countries of the north and south, and in its deepest points the trees are tall enough to rise into the skies themselves. The only way to pass is by airship.

Piloting your airship is an old man named Leon. He looks to be in his late 50s, with a wrinkled and craggy face. His white hair recedes, showing more tanned forehead, and a thick moustache clings defiantly to his upper lip. He begrudgingly accepted to transport you near the ancient ruins known as the Crater of Megido.

The ruins were of a once-great city of magic. It’s said that the city met its end by a devastating magical cataclysm in the past. The exact nature of that cataclysm is lost to history, though a great many scholars speculate on its possibilities.

Whatever the reason, the Crater still hides many powerful and terrifying secrets. Anyone not wishing to take a chance on their life are told to stay far away, yet troops from the neighbouring Empire of Elonia have been spotted in the area. What they seek in the ancient ruins is an unknown, a question on everyone’s lips.

Why are our heroes headed there? King Roland decided not to take action against Elonia, but our group disobeyed his orders to personally investigate the situation.
OOC:

- Jurgen, as a loremaster, what have you been discussing with Leon about travel and the world?
- Nieli, as a rogue, do the crew of the ship trust you or keep an eye on you? How does that make you feel?
- Ail, as a guardian or dancer, what skills do you bring to the airship to help with the deal?
- Pinion, as a wayfarer, is this airship your current home, or just another step on your travels?
- Everyone, how does your answer bring you to where you are in the present?
Jan 4, 2024 2:43 pm
Nieli got onboard the airship first, treating everything in Dunova as a competition to be won. She barely had the time to get to know her team better, knowing only that a bunch of people are flying south to the crater of Megido and that the adventure is not only free but may actually turn out to be profitable.

Redheaded rogue fury loved the life of adventure. After she left her home in the ancient husk of a fallen walker-carrier that in times long forgotten got stuck in the snow on the slopes of Eidolon Peaks, Nieli traveled the lands of the north and across the mountains to the green meadows of Dunova, where she met the first of her unlikely companions in a bar brawl. She learned of the airship expedition soon after, and, of course, by that point, there was no stopping her from joining it too.

"Are you going to wait until the Wendigo gets you?!" she yelled in a high-pitched voice to the unlikely teammates behind her. Anyone familiar with life in the ruins of Kirin Kingdom would know that Wendigo is a monster that attacks at night, and it was still morning when they boarded the airship. "Hmph!" the orange lightning answered her own rhetorical question and hurried up to explore the flying vessel. It was the first time she ever traveled this way.
[ +- ]
When the airship left the troubled land behind, soaring into the sunlit sky, Nieli closed her eyes and for a while silently enjoyed the gentle wind that kept playing with her red hair as the vessel climbed higher and higher, its propellers buzzing calmly and steadily. She took a bunch of sonic spheres out of her pocket and softly struck one against the railing. The musical instrument let out a perfect note. She added another one, and a melody formed. Nieli opened her eyes and sang, adding voice to the music. No words, just feelings of freedom, embracing the endless sky. She wasn't yet a chanter who could call forth magic with their verses, but she was a Kirin skald, and song was still a part of her adventurous soul.

Her song surrounded the airship, and as she looked in the sky ahead, she thought to herself that maybe these people, hearing her song, will look to their future with hope too.
OOC:
As a Kirin traveler and a Fury at that, Nieli certainly makes people around her act with caution. But on the airship, she hopes, she will inspire everyone with her song, and the crew will accept her warmly.

Strong Ail is hard to not notice. A tall broud shouldered orc would stand out in most crowds, but this one is dressed in colorful clothing. Dyed in a patchwork of red, green, yellow, blue and purple some would say his clothes is an eye sore, but due to his size, most choose to do so behind his back. Equally weird is the hammer he carries on his back. It looks like the hammer they use in a high striker game, complete with its iron head painted bright red.

He is quick to offer help to the stevedores load the ship, and volunteers to many of the physical jobs that are needed around the ship. He likes to be needed and used to hard labor in putting up and down a circus. Sadly once the circus went under due to an embezzling director who took off in the night not many places would hire an orc. Luckily strange expeditions to mysterious (and potentially dangerous) places don't seem to mind his origin.

Pinion was very exited. The young man was already enthused to have been traveling on an airship for a while now. Soaring through the sky, covering great distances, seeing the tops of trees and buildings was exhilarating. He was making new friends, well acquaintances at least. Now he had a mission: exploring Crater of Megido, even though he didn't have much adventuring experience.

He boarded the ship and gave Leon a nod hello. Pinion learned quickly that Leon didn't like to have the inefficiencies of his airship pointed out to him. Turns out most people, from archers to zookeepers, don't like to be told how they could be more effective. Luckily, Leon still found him useful, and let him stay aboard in exchange for maintenance and repairs. "I wonder what we'll find at the crater?" he asked of no one in particular

For now, Pinion was resting along the railing of the ship, listening to the music, and looking toward the horizon. (He wasn't a large man, any onlookers might be afraid a strong gust would blow the kid over the side) His long black hair was kept out of his face by his raided welding goggles. Miscellaneous tools were neatly organized in pockets, as is he would need them at a moments notice.

"...and that's why some say that Elonia has been sniffing around those ruins. But hogwash, I say. Everyone who's read even a single book printed in the last twenty years knows that the Eldenberg Hypothesis is a fringe theory now. People these days don't keep up with research. They go around believing whatever they were taught on their father's knee or in grammar school. They don't know anything about the scholarship done by Dorbenwylf, Lisaede, or Kreckle. Now me, I would bet my money on Lisaede. She has some good evidence to support her arguments." Jezlyn pauses to take a sip of tea. The heat fogs up her glasses momentarily.

She is sitting in the pilot's room on a small stool, talking the ear of Leon who, because of Jezlyn's age, finds it hard to boot the old woman and give himself some peace and quiet. Jezlyn never talks about her age, but she is most definitely in the "grandma" category despite her keen eyes and spry body. Sitting on her stool she barely reaches Leon's ribs so has to crane her neck up to look him in the eye during her lectures. She wears a pair of pistols on her hips and a traveling pack sits at the base of her stool. "Are you sure you don't want any tea, Leon? It's my own special blend."

A crew member near Pinion shakes his head. He looks like a veteran, from the sprinkling of grey in his beard, but still young enough for hard labour. Unlike many of the others, he doesn’t look happy about the expedition.

"Nothing good, I don’t think." He grumbles, not looking at Pinion. "Never heard of nothing good coming from that crater. Less with Elonia poking around. Bad news, they are."
"No thank you, ma’am." Leon shakes his head awkwardly at Jezlyn’s question. He tries to keep his eyes forward through the windscreen, and talks as little as possible.

A short distance away, a navigator tries her hardest to conceal the laugh that bubbles up at the response. She hides it behind a show of leaning over the chart table, even though everyone knows the journey to the Crater is a straight arrow.
Far below our ship, static curls in the air. It gets thicker the further out of Dunova the ship goes. It goes unnoticed by the crew as the ship passes closer to the Crater, leaving the forest behind after a few hours of flying.

The forest is replaced by an oddly circular pit that descends deep into the ground. Many of the crew race to the gunwale to look over it. For many this will be the first and only look at the crater they’ll ever have.

To attempt to get to the place on foot would be suicide, and very few airships head in this direction. Today, the skies are entirely deserted, but eerily so. There isn’t even a cloud in sight, as though they’d all been swept away.

Even still, the view of the Crater of Megido is unparalleled. From above it looks almost as though a god has reached down and carved a spoonful of the earth away.

The walls have been cut into the shapes of buildings and waterways. The stone looks ancient, and carved in a method you’ve never seen before, and yet for all the effort they too crumble into the bottom. Everything fades to dust here.
OOC:
If Pinion wants more info on Elonia, it would be a TN 7 [Ins + Ins] check.
If Jezlyn wants any more info on Leon or his mood at the moment, it would be a TN 10 [Ins + Ins] test.
If either Ail or Nieli want more info on the crater, from their vantage point, it’d be a TN 13 [Ins + Wis] check.
None of these checks are required though, only take them if it feels in character!

The skald stops playing music as the forest gives space to the ruins of Megido. In these static-filled skies, the sound of sonic spheres feels somehow inappropriate, as if that air waits for another tune. A dramatic chorus, perhaps. For a second or two, Nieli considers what words such a chorus may sing, but soon she is completely captivated by the sight below. The Kirin traveler lived among ruins her entire childhood, but she never saw buildings cut in half quite like here. Are these buildings dangerous? How do they even hold together on the edge like that? Is water still in the aqueducts? She could ask many things, but the wisdom of her homeland tells her that ruins rarely stay empty for long, and the rogue fury instinctively begins to look for movement and the shapes of monsters among the ancient walls.

Pinion pressed the older crew member for more info on Elonia. Curious if he was about to hear a sad story, a shanty, or nothing at all.

"Suit yourself," Jezlyn says with a shrug. She takes an extra loud sip and gives a pleased aaaahhh of pleasure at the hot tea. Jezlyn stands up and looks out the window at the sight below. She gives a whistle of appreciation. "Now there's something you don't see everyday, right, Leon? I don't suppose you're planning on setting foot in there?" she inquires.

Despite her best efforts, Nieli isn’t able to pick out any monsters. The airship is too high up to see for sure. She can see the strange black stone the buildings are made of, though, and if she leans far enough over the gunwale she can see movement. As she guessed, there’s definitely something down there. What? She can’t say for sure.

---

Meanwhile, on another part of the ship, the crewman who’d commented on Pinion’s thoughts stops at his question. The man frowns, as though deep in thought, then nods his head. Whatever debate he had with himself, he came to a conclusion to tell Pinion his own thoughts.

"Not from Dunova, are you?" He grumbles. "We hear all sorts about Elonia, what with being so close and all. Most of it isn’t the kind of stuff you want to hear."

He drops the ropes onto the deck and crosses his arms. "You’ve probably heard about the Director, the one who took power recently? I heard she bullied her way till she was in charge."

"S’what I heard too." Another crew member pipes up. A younger woman, though still as weather worn as her alternative. They both see the conversation as a better alternative to work though, that much is clear. "And most people don’t think she’ll stop there. Pushing borders they say, sabre rattling."

The man nods his agreement. "If they’re down there, they’re using it to cook up some kind of weapon or something, that’s what my money’s on. Too much mechanics and not enough magic, I say. They’re dangerous, can’t be trusted. I’d watch yourself around Elonians lad."

---

At Jezlyn’s contented sigh, Leon chances a look out of the side of his eye. He harrumphs a little, making his moustache dance, but focuses on the window. At Jezlyn’s question though, he shakes his head.

"Not love nor money would make me go down there." He rubs his nose. "A cursed place that is, not a place for the likes of us at all."

From his tone of voice, and that he’d finally, properly looked away from the windscreen, she can tell it’s more concern and worry, rather than anger and fear that drives his words. Being of a similar age to him, Jezlyn’s heard of his reputation. Leon had been a military pilot, back in the day, but he always looked out for his crew when he could.

An uneasy pause settles over the bridge. The navigation leans back from her desk, craning her neck to get a good look at both of the old timers in the room with her. Where she is, Jezlyn can see her but Leon can’t. She does notice a family resemblance between the two.

She doesn’t have time to dwell on the subject though, as a flash of light catches her attention. Right as Leon reaches for his radio to call for a descent, the rumbling she’d thought came from the engine reached a crescendo.

The flash had come from the crater, and when she looks down she sees a giant beam of purple energy lance out.

It strikes the left side of the airship directly before she can blink. The airship lurches, listening heavily. The crew are thrown from their feet as fire and smoke fills the air in the energy pulse’s crackling aftermath.

"Son of a cactroll." Leon roars from where he’s kept himself standing by holding on to the helm. "I swear this is the last time I ferry a bunch of adventurers, we’ll never make a safe landing at this rate!"

It doesn’t take a seasoned engineer to see that the airship is damaged and crash landing is inevitable. The huge hole in the side is belching thick black smoke, and while the crew are battling the fire the damage is done. It’s possible you can all find a way to make the landing a bit more survivable though.
Jan 8, 2024 10:24 am
Ail lets out a curse as the airship lurches. "Everyone all right?" he calls out to the rest of the crew as he gets back on his feet. He quickly gets around to help where needed according to the more experienced crewmmembers.
OOC:
Is it possible to pull on the windsails (assuming they even have windsales and isn't just magic) and position them so it will slow the descent? Otherwise he will probably pull people out of danger and help extinguish the flames.
Jan 8, 2024 11:37 am
"Waaaahh! Jezlyn cries out as she is knocked from her stool, splashing hot tea on herself. "Aaaiiyyaa!" she cries out right after from the burning liquid. She quickly wipes her hand on her emerald-colored vest. "Oh that burns! What's going on? Leon! Are we hit? How can I help?" She leaps to her feat, not content to crash land while she's on her backside.
Jan 8, 2024 3:05 pm
As the ship lurches, Pinion quickly and awkwardly thanks the crew for the info and rushes to the engine room.
Once there he ask "How bad is the damage? Anything we can do to slow our descent?"
Jan 8, 2024 4:02 pm
As the ship tilts, Nieli grips the gunwale she was looking over a moment ago. She glances over to the deck, trying to figure out the damage or any immediate danger to her or anyone else, but knowing little about the ship and its technology, she soon decides that the best way to help everyone is to not get in anyone's way.
OOC:
Is there anyone around in any immediate danger (e.g. falling out of the ship, being crushed, on fire etc.)?
Jan 8, 2024 11:09 pm
Ail rushes to the wind sails, where many of the crew members are fighting to keep them under control. In the tension, some of the ropes snapped and have gone wild. With the ship off angle, it’s hard to keep their footing on the deck so it seems to be a harder job than it looks. Even still, they look like they could use all the help they can get.

Around him the rest of the deck is in chaos. Smoke fills the air, but it comes from secondary fires. Whatever hit them carved its way through the deck, but luckily missed hitting anyone. All the injuries came from the initial impact, and the crew look shaken. No one expected an attack.
OOC:
If Ail wants to get the wind sails under control, it would be a [Dex + Mig]. Alternatively, if he wants to help people in danger it’d be [Dex + Ins].

"Took a hit from something." Leon’s voice is tight with effort as he fights with the helm. "I think the engines won’t hold out much longer though. Might want to check on them, or find out where we got hit."

From his tone, Jezlyn can tell it’s not his first time being in a falling ship, but even still he doesn’t sound like he’s enjoying the experience. The three in the bridge can hear the clamour of shouting voices outside, and the thunder of footsteps. The ship groans in protest.

"Either way, we need to evacuate the interior before the smoke gets too thick." He risks a glance over his shoulder at his navigator. "Huxley, sound the alarm."

The stunned young woman doesn’t respond at first, but eventually reaches a shaky hand out to her desk where she presses a button. An alarm sounds soon after.
Pinion bursts through the door to the engine room. It’s a tall room, spanning three decks, to make space for the flight stone that keeps the ship airborne. The crystalised form of air magic is pulsing with energy, giving the room an unusual amount of pressure.

The smoke in here is thick, but not so bad that work can’t be done to preempt more damage. It mixes with steam hissing from brass pipes that direct the energy from the flightstone. In a ship like this, there aren’t many engineering specialists. The four of them, including the chief engineer, and moving in action. Two are combating a growing fire with some water magic, while another struggles to release pressure from a valve.

At the top of some maintenance scaffolding, the chief engineer wipes sweat off his face. The heat has gotten to him already. He looks down at Pinion. "The damage is bad. We’re going down. Question is how fast, know how to work on flight engines?"
OOC:
If Pinion wants to help out with the engine it would be [Dex + Ins]

There are plenty of people around in the same position as her, their jobs not being immediately relevant in such a scenario. Most of them are clearing space so people don’t trip over things in their haste, or helping with the evacuation of the lower decks. Morale is tense and on a breaking point, just like the ship itself.

There’s plenty of people who need assistance. Some even need medical attention. It’s just a matter of where to look and what to help with first.
Jan 8, 2024 11:44 pm
Pinion lets out a small laugh "I would sleep in the engine room if captain would allow it . . ." he says. Taking out his tools and working, he continues talking, even though no one is listening, or can hear him over the noise. " . . . I may not have worked in engines of this size before, but they aren't dissimilar to the ones used at the mill back home. Mind you, those weren't integrated with magic, but an engine is an engine am I right? Just give me a moment to calibrate . . . . .

As he’d mentioned in his ramblings, Pinion has enough experience already to know his way around the engine. Roughly. With impressive natural insight, and a deft hand, he keeps the mana flowing enough that the chief engineer can feed some to the flight systems. The ship lurches, and its descent slows considerably.

"Not bad, kid." The chief engineer climbs back down the scaffolding, and gives him a grateful clap on the back. He looks like he’s about to say more, when the pair hear a crash.

They turn to see where part of the pipeline has collapsed, due to the fire. The two engineers trying to deal with the open blaze are trapped. One is unharmed, but can’t escape, the other’s leg is stuck under the fallen pipe.

"That’s something we can’t deal with right now." He looks back at the flightstone. "Someone needs to keep an eye on the pressure levels. I’m not sure it can be you, do you know the numbers?"

He doesn’t have any accusation in his voice, more concern. It’s clear he’s conflicted, but he doesn’t want to risk anything else. He looks at Pinion hopefully, but the choice is his to make. Barely a second later, the door swings open again and Jezlyn stumbles in.

It’s hard for her not to understand the situation.
Out on deck, Huxley, who arrived with others from inside, has taken charge. She’s directing anyone she can spare to a series of hot air balloon lifeboats. By this point the tops of the tallest trees are pushing up past the edges of the deck, and every now and then the crew hear a groan or snap as the bulk strikes one of them.

She calls out to Ail and Nieli "We’re out of time. Get to the lifeboats and get free."

It doesn’t look like she has any intention of following her own advice. Not yet.

Ail grips the ropes, his muscles straining, but he manages to gather them and stop the sails from causing more problems. It requires all his considerable strength to keep them pinned though, so he knows if he goes for the lifeboats they’d fly free. Someone has to keep a hold of them while the others escape.

It could be him, or it could be one of the stronger deck hands.
Jan 9, 2024 4:20 pm
"Lifeboats??!" the skald thinks to herself as she charges towards the navigator while grasping every rail or rope on the way to stay on her feet. "Tell me what to do here and get on the boat!" Nieli almost yells at Huxley as she tries to get the captain's daughter moving. By the rhythm of trees striking the ship, she guesses now that the fall slowed down considerably. It doesn't take an engineer to figure out that if they were still falling at the same speed, there would be just one strike, the one when their airship would hit the ground. "I am from Kirin! I've been through worse!" the rogue fury tells the slender girl firmly. "Move!!"
OOC:
I'd like to invoke both my Identity and Origin for whatever follows this action.
Jan 10, 2024 8:32 am
"Once everyone else is safe!" Ail yells out in reply Huxley and Nieli through gritted teeth from the effort to hold the ropes. Once everyone is safe in the lifeboats he plans to make a mad dash across the deck. While he wasn't primarily an acrobat he did pick up a few tricks over the years in the circus and he's sure he'll make it.
Jan 10, 2024 5:07 pm
Pinion says excitedly; "Oh, Jezlyn! Did you finally get Leon to try your tea? No wait, ignore that. Can you help me monitor the pressure, while the engineers try to free their companion over there?"
Jan 11, 2024 12:51 am
"The lifeboats are on the far side." Huxley points to the starboard, a short way back. The bulk of the bridge blocks them from sight, but from there Nieli can already see the balloons of the lifeboats being pumped up. "We’d need to cross the deck, the ladders to the inflated balloons would be a straight shot."

She protests when Nieli tries to shuffle her on. "I can’t go just yet, essential personnel have to be the last to leave!"

From the look in her eye, Nieli can tell she’s aware that she wouldn’t be considered essential personnel but she has no intention to leave yet. She looks as stubborn as any of the other members of the crew, which only gives Nieli a few options if she wants her off first.

The rest of the crew on the top deck are beginning to thin out, and the evacuees from the lower decks have already gone. Thankfully, the amount of crew the airship had wasn’t enormous, so it didn’t seem that much of a logistical nightmare to get everyone to safety. Not that Leon or the engineers have appeared yet.
OOC:
Nieli has three main options;
- Convince Huxley to leave which would be [Ins + Wlp] at TN 10.
- Strong arm her into leaving which would be [Mig + Mig] at TN 7.
- Accept her decision and head to the lifeboats alone, which wouldn't require a check.

As for Ail, since he's still ongoing on a check he's already succeeded, I won't make him take another check. If he wanted to make a dash of the lifeboats, it would be [Dex + Dex] at TN 7 at the moment, potentially increasing TN the closer to the crash we get.

As for Pinion and Jezlyn, I'll wait for Jezlyn to reply before I address that!
Jan 11, 2024 1:40 am
Nieli grabbed Huxley's shoulder and spoke to her in a strangely low, soulful voice, staring into the stubborn navigator's eyes. "Have you seen torn limbs? Caved in skulls? Faces burned to the bone?!" she asked. "And I've seen it," she continued. "I'm sure, that is what happens to people when airships crash, too. Do you think your parents would want to witness anything that awful happen to you? Or would they rather see you live a long and happy life?" As she spoke, despite her grim expression, a tear appeared in the corner of the skald's eye. She took a short pause and then continued with an emotional, commanding yell, releasing the girl. "GET! TO! THE! BOAT!"

"Why not both?" Jezlyn responds as she hurries to the engineers. "That stubborn mule still won't try it! Here, here, move out of the way. Reluctantly, Huxley nods. She leads Nieli over to the lifeboats, where the last of the deckhands are still directing people toward the balloons. Some have already been released and are drifting into the air above and away. The deckhands turn to Nieli and Huxley, and after giving a nod they help them into the boats.

Soon after, Ail comes barrelling toward them. With an impressive leap, he dives into the lifeboat as it casts away. He’s safe from the airship as it drifts dangerously close to the ground, leaving a trail of crushed and mangled trees in its wake.

Of course the balloons aren’t designed to stay airborne forever, but unlike the bulk of the main ship they drift more peacefully and are controlled on their path to the ground.

In the bowels of the ship, the warning still sounds. The chief engineer heads to check the pressure, and the altitude metre, trusting Jezlyn and Pinion to get the trapped man to safety. Over the roar of the blaze and the overworked engines he calls out.

"Better get them out of there soon, we’re about to impact. As soon as you can, brace yourselves. It’s now or never!"
OOC:
So at this point I'd suggest that Pinion and Jezlyn perform a group check, but since we're going by play by post I'll not have you designate a leader. Instead, whoever get's here first will be supporting and whoever posts last will be the "leader" so to speak. The check to save the man is [Ins + Mig] with TN 10. If the supporter succeeds, the leader gets +1 to the check!

Don't worry, I do failing forward so you'll be okay!
Unfortunately, the group underestimated just how close to the ground they were. Right as Pinion and Jezlyn managed to lever the pipe up they hit the ground. The shock ran through the entire airship, with an ear splitting boom to match. The group inside didn't hear that as their first warning however. Their discovery was far more physical.

Before they knew it they were thrown into the air, off their feet. The feeling of weightlessness rushed over them, a momentary lapse in reality like being in a bubble. Then they crashed down again and the world spun.

The airship's weight carried it a short distance, gouging a line in the ground, until it eventually stopped at the lip of the crater. In the aftermath of the crash, those that could pulled people out of the wreckage and set up recovery stations.

Among those saved are Leon, with a few scratches, Pinion and Jezlyn, and the full compliment of engineers although not all entirely in one piece.

"Aiiiyaaa. I haven't felt this banged up since I was a teenager and that bully Martyn shoved me in an empty cask and rolled me down Hollick's Hill. Is everyone all right?" Jez pushes a few pieces of broken airship structure off of her and gingerly stands up. The world spins for a moment and her vision is a little blurry. She realizes she's lost her glasses in the crash. Now where could they be? "And can you help me find my glasses?"
Jan 14, 2024 6:19 am
Pinion stops thinking about options to stabilize a rolling cask, and brings his mi d to the present. He looks around, trying to answer either question; "I'm not sure. But let's gather who and what we can and get out of here before any number of horrible things happen. Another blast, the ship collapsing, falling into the crater, bandits coming to finish us off . . . His list goes on as he tries to help who he can exit the ship.
Jan 19, 2024 2:59 pm
Everyone has gathered around Leon, having decided that safety in numbers is their best bet this close to the crater. The ground down here is densely packed, and the trees seem far closer than they ever did from above. The crater gives the place an ominous overtone, like at any moment danger could rear its head. That said, it already did with the beam of light.

From the crater’s edge you can feel the static crackle of magic, and purple light pulses over the crater's lip occasionally. It doesn’t appear to be dangerous anymore, though having the stranded airship so close to it doesn’t sit right with anyone.

Leon looks at the group he’d been charged to transport. "Well, this is a mess alright. A fine mess. At best it’ll take a few hours to fix up, at worst…" He trails off, and from his expression you can clearly see that he doesn’t want to say it. He purses his lips and looks around, then back at the ship. "If we’re lucky, the chart room wasn’t destroyed in the impact. I don’t want Huxley, or anyone, going in there alone though so I’d ask one of you to accompany her."

"We might need some firewood." Another crew member comments. "Who knows how cold it’ll get out here?"

"Might serve to keep the monsters off our backs, too." Leon nods. "Whoever goes can try and get our bearings."

"And the elephant in the room." Huxley asks, trying her best not to look at the crater directly. She seems the most shaken by the crash, having never experienced a clear life or death situation before. Her skin is still pale, though her colour is slowly returning. "What if whatever shot that beam plans to finish what it started?"

"Then we need sentries." The chief engineer’s gruff voice answers, from where he and his team are sifting through the debris. "Not for long I doubt, if they don’t come soon then they won’t later."

"So there you have it." Leon concludes.
OOC:
Anyone is free to pick any of the three options, or you can move as a group. Up to you.
Jan 19, 2024 4:56 pm
"If we get the ship fixed, whats to stop the beam from firing again?" Should we try and disable their weapon? Pinion asks
Jan 19, 2024 5:10 pm
"I think that's probably a good idea." The chief engineer agrees, then turns to Leon.

"It is, but I reckon we best get an idea where we are before anyone heads down there. I get the feeling whatever we meet down there's going to be none to friendly, but if you want to head in be my guest. I won't stop you." Leon scratches the back of his neck.
Jan 20, 2024 1:49 am
"I'll go with Huxley. What do you want us to do in the chart room? Also, someone needs to look after any injured passengers."
Jan 20, 2024 3:56 am
"I'll head out to gather some firewood, then keep watch when I return. How long do you think until it gets dark?" He ask, trying to fins the sun through the trees.
Jan 20, 2024 2:46 pm
"I'll come with you," Ail tells Pierre. "I am Strong Ail and have the strength to carry a lot of firewood. Besides, no one should go alone until we have discovered what happened."
Jan 21, 2024 8:05 pm
The instructions that Huxley and Jezlyn were given for going back into the ship were to find the chart room and recover the maps. Preferably, the more detailed map of the forest routes if it’s intact or otherwise anything the pair could get their hands on.

The theory behind the action came as the easy part, and getting into the airship appeared to be the hard part. The ship had fallen with a tilt to the side, meaning the pair would either need to climb up to the door or climb the bottom and slide down. Either way, it’d be harder than they’d thought.

Inside, things were still touch and go. The walls and floor didn’t seem to be entirely stable, and from the heat inside a fire still burned somewhere even if most had been smothered by the impact.

"It might help if we make this quick. We don’t want to get trapped here, right?" Huxley chuckles nervously.
OOC:
Does Jezlyn prioritise speed or safety?

Pinion and Ail head into the woods after agreeing with Leon on the job. They notice pretty quickly that, despite the size of the ship, they lose sight of it quickly enough due to the thickness and height of the trees. They can still hear the crew though, luckily.

The chief engineer had sent one of his team, a man by the name of Baffles, with them in case they found anything to repair the ship. Between Pinion and him, they’d be able to identify anything. Not that anyone expected to find anything around.

Nothing about Baffles suggested they were anything but normal, although they weren’t the loudest person around. They were pleasant, and a little shy, and utterly unremarkable. Even still, after a short distance, he turned back to the pair with a question.

"How far out do we want to search?"
OOC:
Do Pinion and Ail want to stick close to the ship or venture further out?
Jan 21, 2024 9:42 pm
"Not too far. I don't want to lose our way. I'd also like to be back to the ship in case we have hostile visitors. Not that I know what I'd do if we did. Barter? plead for mercy? . . . ."
Jan 22, 2024 7:56 am
"Well, I have my hammer," Ail shrugs. "So anyone would do better to stay away from us."
Jan 22, 2024 1:13 pm
OOC:
I'll go for speed since there could be a fire, explosion, or collapse.
Jan 22, 2024 4:47 pm
Before long Pinion, Ail and Baffles find suitable tree branches. It is surprising how hard they find finding suitable wood in the forest regards to firewood, but they find some close enough to the airship. After gathering a suitable amount to make a large fire, or several smaller ones if needed, they're ready to head back to camp. Something distracts them, however.

They run across some footprints. Though none of them are trackers, they can clearly see the boot prints in the mud and fallen leaves. They look like human footprints, but any further information would need more evaluation. Whoever made them, they're fresh and heading toward the crater.

"That's not... uh... who made these?" Baffles asks, hands on hips.
Inside the airship, Jezlyn advises speed. The two pick their way through the corridors which now more resemble tunnels, and they do so with impressive speed. They've barely navigated their way down a flight of stairs when Huxley calls out to Jezlyn and points at a door. "The chart room is just through there."

They clamber up the slanted tunnel, avoiding a small amount of a cave in, and Huxley pushes the door open. They climb in and settle. Or settle as best the can among the upturned tables and scattered papers. Thankfully, most stuff was secured in locked filing cabinets and secured locations and have stayed put. Smiling at the luck, Huxley makes her way to one of the cabinets and begins picking through.

Not long after she's opened the door though, the pair hears the groan of metal. They share a wary glance, but nothing further happens.
Jan 23, 2024 8:42 am
Ail scouts towards the crater. "Someone who don't have our best interest in heart I's wager," Ail says with a sigh. "We should hurry back to camp."
Jan 23, 2024 1:20 pm
Jezlyn looks around at the sound of groaning. "Well let's hope our luck lasts long enough to get back out! Here, let me carry some of those. Then we can get out on the double." Jezlyn grabs some of the charts and makes her way out before she gets trapped.

Jan 24, 2024 2:18 pm
Away from the ship, Pinion delays the group long enough to get a gook look at the tracks. He can tell there are at least three people who must've made them, and though he's not an experienced tracker he can tell they were pretty heavy by how deep the prints are. They're probably wearing armour, or something similar. He's about to say as much, when the sounds of an explosion splits the tranquillity.

The explosion also grabs the attention of Huxley and Jezlyn who have just emerged from the ship. The shockwave is close enough to them that it upsets the precarious balance, and they're both forced to jump from the ship as part of the tunnel collapses behind them. They land in a heap in the dust. Neither stay on their arses for long though.

Everyone converges on the source, and one lone woman is already there.

Velisse stands in the fading dust of the explosion, facing off against two autonomous knights. They don't look like they'll give her too much trouble, but if the blast is anything to go by it means there are definitely more on the way. She'll need backup before too long.

Velisse whirled around when she heard the entrance of the others, on guard to see if she was being flanked by even more enemies than the two armoured soldiers she discovered ahead of her. The explosion and the billowing dust had obscured her sight, making it hard for her to make out who exactly had entered the room.

For if anyone had had a chance to lay eyes on her, they would've noted a tall warrior woman with a knightly bearing, clad in an antique armour not recently seen. It was tempered black with purple embellishments, worn in all the usual spots. She wore no tabard to indicate her allegiance nor where she hailed from. Grasped in both hands was an equally old sword, nearly as long as she was tall, as broad as the hair that fanned out behind her that was fluttered in the blast for she wore no protective helmet.

Velisse had been in pursuit of some clue as to the fall of the Kirin empire, and it was said that the ancient ruins of Megido might bear some solution that could revive the fallen glory of the Kirin.

As Velisse had expected, there weren't only two of the automated soldiers. A total of four had followed her into the room, and were encroaching on her position. They had their halberds at the ready, but luckily for her and the new arrivals they were moving slowly suggesting something interfered with their systems.

The two earlier ones engage Ail and Velisse, while the other two take their time arriving.

Between their combined efforts, the group strike back against the encroaching knights. They can hear the sounds of others from the airship approaching, although keeping a healthy distance, in case they need to help. The battle is definitely going in the group's favour, though, as a bullet from Jezyln's pistol strikes it's target and causes the construct to crumple into a shambled heap.

The other two hostile knights sense the loss of their comrade, and act under a strange programming. One detaches from it's combat with Ail, weakened by a crushing blow to one of it's arms, and moves to provide strength in numbers against Velisse and the traitorous one.

"Sure, why not?" Leon shakes his head, and shrugs. "It seems to be the reason everyone's here."

He doesn't look entirely happy about any of it, but then the group have come to know that he never really seems to look happy about anything. He looks as though he's about to go on, when Huxley descends the slope to the platform, although with considerably more difficulty than the others. She gives the group a thankful smile that they're all alright before giving her report.

"The head engineer reckons the ship's going to be airborne again." Her smile falters a little, showing she's already given the good news. "But it'll take a while, and even then it'll only be able to do short journeys."

The crew members exchange wary glances, and concerned looks at the downed automatons. Neither Leon nor Huxley seem as perturbed by their existence, but still don't look entirely comfortable with the revelation. Leon strokes his moustache as he thinks about where to go from there, before following up.

"How long is a while."

"Well, that depends." She purses her lips and looks at the sky above the clearing, already starting to move past midday. "A couple of hours and we can hop to a nearby village, more and we might make it back to Dunova."

Leon nods. "So, there you have it. You've got your time to investigate the ruins, it'll be up to you how long you keep us here."
Feb 13, 2024 1:53 am
"If I knew I wouldn't be having to chop my way through these rustbuckets," Velisse was about to give the armoured shells a little kick, and then realised her tone might've come across as snappish to Pierre. Her attention perked up more when she heard talk of their airship. Having access to transport would go a long way in helping her accomplish what she needed to. She stuck out her gauntleted hand to offer an assenting handshake, "Call me Velisse. You have my sword for whatever lies ahead here.

And I don't think I caught any of your names yet."
Feb 13, 2024 9:51 am
Strong Ail comes over with his hands full of firewood. "In the circus I went with Strong Ail, the world's strongest orc," he says with a smile and akwardly tries to shake Velisse's hand without dropping any of the gathered firewood. "You may call me Ail."
Feb 13, 2024 5:41 pm
Pinion stands up from the piles of parts that were formerly foes. "You can call me Pinion. I fix things, and ideally try to make them better if I can."
Feb 14, 2024 12:20 am
Jezlyn snorts at all of these awkwardly formal introductions. "You may call me anything you'd like, but my name's Jezlyn. I should be retired, sitting in a nice rocking chair and sipping tea next to a fire, but instead I am traipsing through enemy territory and blasting automatons. Not such a bad life now that I hear myself say it," she grins.
Feb 14, 2024 12:34 am
"Jezelyn, you drink tea all the time. Although I guess the wreck of the airship doesn't quite count as a cozy fire . . ..
Feb 14, 2024 6:49 am
Jezlyn nods. "The tea is what makes everything worth it. No tea, no adventure. Speaking of, I should check the ship's galley to make sure the tea supply survived intact..."
Feb 15, 2024 3:21 pm
"A fine crew, if a bit out of your way to find yourselves here. Let's proceed so you can decide what you make of this place."
Feb 17, 2024 9:40 am
After confirming some things with Leon and the crew, Velisse leads the party further into the crater. It doesn't take long before the group hit a road block. There doesn’t appear to be any clear path down to the bottom. At first, the crater has a shallow slope, but it's obscured by the sides of buildings half toppled and collapsed. What used to be paths snake between the buildings, but they’re blocked by fallen rubble and debris.

The whole area whispers of the life that once used to live here. It seems so lifelike a city that the group can practically see children playing while their parents chatter with each other. The streets are narrow but regular, and it seems the place is arranged with purpose. Yet something eerie plagues the group. The statues you can see here and there, their faces lost due to age, remind you of those in the parade squares in Dunova. They all seem to look to the centre of the crater and the building there in.

The central ruin, deep below, is massive. It pulses with purple energy, which seeps between the seams and cracks of the black blocks that form its body. Around it, though they're hard to see at a distance, are tents hidden among the ruins. Every now and then the group can see someone moving only for a moment before they disappear into the colossal building. At the front, a door opens like a maw ready to swallow anything that comes too close.
Feb 17, 2024 3:59 pm
"There are others up ahead. We should decide what we want to do when we inevitably meet them." Velisse waved the others to take a more circumspect approach to duck behind one of the ruined buildings, now that they had spotted other people.
Feb 17, 2024 8:42 pm
"How would we even descend further? All the paths appear blocked"
Feb 18, 2024 4:09 am
"Well if there's one thing an airship lacks, it isn't ropes. Maybe we could repel down into the crater?" It might be a good idea, but Jezlyn isn't looking forward to a solution that involves so much muscle power.
Feb 19, 2024 8:50 am
"If they can get up, they should be able to get back down. Maybe there's a hidden pathway or stairway we're not seeing," Strong Ail suggests, peering into the edges to see if there's any cleverly concealed way to get up or down.
Feb 19, 2024 12:32 pm
While it’s not easy for Ail and the rest to see, they do start to notice the signs of a path snaking through the rubble. If they chose it as an option they’ll need to work as a team to see themselves down it.
Feb 19, 2024 2:03 pm
"A path! I'd lead the way, but it seems hard for me to navigate through in my heavy armour."
OOC:
What kind of teamwork? Is it something that needs climbing? Or nimbleness? Or rope? Does Velisse and Ail chuck someone down first?
Feb 19, 2024 4:20 pm
OOC:
I’d call it a mix. Some situations that’d require a smaller or more nimble person and some areas requiring someone with more brawn. In terms of mechanics, it’d be a group check. In terms of a JRPG it’d be the equivalent of a field zone.

The terrain proves to be even more difficult that you expected it to be. The crumbling ground slips as you try to make your way down safely, and the obsidian blocks are too heavy to move. By the time you make it to half way, the sun has moved toward evening and an oppressive heat has settled into the crater leaving you sweating and disoriented.

Right as you move to the next section, ready to carry on down just a little, you hear a rumble. It starts gradually at first, and slowly gets louder. Right as Pinion and Jezlyn realise what's happening, a nearby aqueduct bursts and they don't have time to warn anyone. Water cascades down across scree slopes and fallen buildings. It engulfs you and carries you with it.

You're further disoriented by the wave as you pass murals daubed on surprisingly intact buildings. They consist of strange looking angels and twisted creatures. Some have many eyes, while others carry the sun and the stars. All glow with purple energy. The blocks become larger and pulse with purple glyphs, while others have brass pipes which you know have been added far more recently.

The wave eventually dumps you in a pool of water at the start of a a concourse, leading to a large cylindrical building in the crater’s centre. What look like old columns of black stone line the well kept road, but they’ve crumbled into disrepair. Around them you notice the broken forms of Elonian Knights.

Some lie broken and discarded, their parts strewn out in the dust. Others march on cracking limbs, spewing sparks of magic into the air. The signs of a battle are evident all around, and just like whatever had taken down the airship had damaged them just as easily.
OOC:
Everyone should take a status effect of either Dazed or Shaken, unless you already have one at which point you automatically take the other.

The inside of an ancient building.

The walls are made of deep, black stone blocks. Purple light glows from angular symbols carved into their surface. Everything is geometrical, with impressive precision. The only alterations to the clinical, clean lines are places where time has worn the stone away or cracked it irreparably.

Lanterns hang from poles that have been placed since, displacing the layer of dust that gathered on the floor. They mix with the purple glow casting long shadows across the empty room. They’re placed to illuminate a wide bronze pillar supporting the chamber roof high above.

Cracks adorn the pillar as though lines on an artist’s canvas. From them, intense energy seeps out. It fills the room with crackling static, volatile and ready to explode with the slightest bit of encouragement.

We hear the sound of approaching armoured footsteps. They echo off the walls, until they come to an abrupt halt. From off screen, a silver gauntlet hand reaches for the pillar, and softly follows the lines of the ancient symbols.

"The archaeologists from Elonia were right." A woman’s voice, thick with joy, speaks. "The disaster buried the compass here, and it’s been left ever since. We have it now though, dear brother, and you can return to me for good."

Two figures are silhouetted against the light. One is a giant clad in thick plates of armour. They give it the appearance of a statue more than a living creature. The other, shorter and thinner, carries a lance far taller than they are.

Time, it might seem, is running out.

Velisse had no love for the Elonians, but her ears perked up at the mention of whatever artifact the pair ahead of them were mentioning. A compass? Why that could point her way to what she had lost!

She needed a moment to clear her head though, in order to figure out what her best course of action was.

Jezlyn flails about in the water. Her head is spinning and she's disoriented. Which way is up? She sees light above her and decides to kick up. Eventually she breaks water and takes a huge gasp of air. Her lungs hurt. She spies a shore of some kind nearby and begins swimming towards it.

Hauling yourselves from the pool, you notice the ground here isn't like the top of the crater. It's glassy, as though something very powerful has struck across it and warped it. Below that layer, and the dust, you can make out thick obsidian blocks like the ones you passed on the way down. They're gently pulsing with purple energy, and it seems to come from the central building in a periodic wave.

Along with the occasional clank of a step from the damaged Elonian Knights, you can hear a hum. It seems to be coming from somewhere far away, like a background sound. It's consistent in it's volume no matter which way you turn or where you go.
Feb 25, 2024 3:21 pm
Velisse weighed the merits of approaching the nearest Elonian Knight to speak with them about what had happened here, for they had evidently suffered from whatever befell them. Was the purple energy deadly? Could they avoid its effects?

With what appeared to be injured knights lying there, Velisse made the assumption that they must have suffered some effect from the radiating energy. She moved to the one nearest to them, "Are you okay? What happened?"
Feb 27, 2024 8:44 pm
As Velisse approaches, she can see the movements of the knight don't seem natural. They remind her of a puppet on a string, as though something else is moving them in short jagged lurches. They stop when she speaks, and slowly turns to face her. She can hear the scrape of metal on metal as they turn. They doesn't speak, though.

The impression Velisse gets from them isn't of hostility though. They just seem lost or confused.

Velisse herself hadn't cleared her head as well, she momentarily wondered if she was feeling the same way they did. She didn't want to display hostility herself, not just yet, but something didn't seem right. She indicated to the others to see if they could tell if something, some magic, was causing them to be this way.

The Elonian knight lets out a crackle of static, before falling flat. None of the others look to be in much better condition, as though they've just been abandoned and left to rust. Whoever it is that brought them here seems not to care what happens to them, now that they've served their purpose the owner obviously thinks it's fine to throw them away.

"More empty shells." Velisse looked troubled. "We'll have no answers here." She looked onward, to see where they ought to proceed next.
Mar 3, 2024 10:37 am
Velisse moves on from the broken form of the knight. She peers toward the central building, where something catches her eye. In the middle of the concourse, something small is approaching at speed. In the distance, it doesn't look like much but it resolves into the shape of a small person carrying a rather large bag. They are sprinting as fast as they can, pursued by the form of a strange looking bat.

She's attracting a lot of attention from the rather more functioning Elonian Knights who join the pursuit, and she keeps glancing behind her.

"I-I’m just a merchant." The young lady yells, dashing straight for you. "P-please help!"
Mar 4, 2024 1:44 pm
Jezlyn pulls out her pistol to cover the poor woman in case anything gets too close to her. "Over here! Get behind us!"
Mar 4, 2024 7:49 pm
"Thank you~" The girl yells, diving behind the group in terror.

The pursuers, now clearly a monster bat and a handful of Elonian Knights, draw up short. They eye the group warily, but don't seem to want to test an enemy with numbers and weapons. Even if the knights are acting on programming, something here seems to have given them more sentience than they usually have.
Mar 5, 2024 1:22 pm
Strong Ail draws his hammer and looks at the knights. "Let us pass and you won't end up dented pieces of debris!" he threaten them.
Mar 5, 2024 9:23 pm
The creatures back off a few steps at Ail's words, the bat practically turning tail and running completely, but the knights don't look like they're quite so cowardly. As much as an automaton can have emotions like that. It seems like they can't cross a certain boundary though, so as long as the group stays behind that they won't be coming any closer, either.
Mar 5, 2024 10:11 pm
Pinion ask the woman; "Who was that? And what business would they have with a merchant?"
Mar 6, 2024 1:59 am
"And more importantly, what is a merchant doing down here. I can't imagine you'd find many customers in a dangerous place such as this." Jezlyn studies the woman trying to see if there's more than meets the eye.
Mar 6, 2024 7:08 am
While Velisse was very ready to jump to the defense of the fleeing woman and fend off the knights, the claim that she was a merchant threw Velisse off a little, much like what Pierre or Jezlyn wondered. The dark knight didn't attack the knights straightaway, but waited a moment, as much as the knights paused.
Mar 6, 2024 12:37 pm
"I don't know what they'd want from me."

The young lady stares at the group of enemies still idling on the invisible boundary. After a few seconds, she seems satisfied that the immediate danger has passed, and pulls her hood down. The first thing you notice are a pair of bear ears, and her tanned skin. She has dark hair worn in a pair of braids, and a broad grin. She gives you the impression of a small flower with the determination to thrive anywhere.

"Well, unless they want this..."

She has a large bag on her back. She reaches into one of the flaps and draws out a rather large crystal orb. She seems to have stars in her eyes as she holds it up and the sunlight glints off it's reflective surface. After a few seconds, she pops it back in her bag protectively. Then turns to Jezlyn.

"I'm here finding merchandise, obviously. I can't always stock my inventory in a local market if you know what I mean." She elbows Jezlyn and gives her a wink. "Sometimes you have to boldly go where others won't, you know? Only my bodyguard disappeared, because I never hired them to begin with."

She pauses, blinking as though she'd just remembered something. "I'm Olivia, by the way! My shop's always open if you're in need of my wares!"
Mar 6, 2024 1:36 pm
Velisse couldn't resist a little snort. This woman was a thief! She waited to see what Jezlyn's reply was going to be.
Mar 6, 2024 1:52 pm
Jezlyn almost goes cross-eyed as the girl seems to have no mouth filter and is babbling from one topic to the next. "You lost a bodyguard you never hired? What does that even mean? And where did you get that crystal? I'm sure it wasn't just lying around on the floor somewhere free for the taking..." She frowns in a stern-grandmother-sort-of-way.
Mar 6, 2024 7:07 pm
"Not exactly. I mean I never hired them, so I guess I didn't lose them at all." Olivia shrugs. "It's the thought that counts though, right?"

She takes off her bag and puts it down at her feet, taking a moment to stretch. You notice the scuffs and dirt on her clothes, that suggests she made it a habit of running away when the going got tough. Well, either that or she liked rolling around in the great outdoors but from a glance you can tell she's not that kind of girl. Once she's done stretching, pats the top of the bag.

"That's right, completely free for the taking. It's funny how lucky you can get sometimes, you know? And talking about luck, you're all in luck! I've got healing potions, tonics, a few bombs... how about helping a girl cut a deal, hmm?"
Mar 6, 2024 7:25 pm
Pinion eyes her suspiciously; "Unless you have safe passage from this crater, I don't think we can 'cut a deal', no."
OOC:
are the knights still watching us? Not coming any closer?
Mar 6, 2024 11:27 pm
"Oh dear me, no, it's not the thought that counts. If that were true, every married man in the world would be guilty of infidelity!" Jezlyn lets out a braying grandmother laugh and slaps her knee at her own joke.
Mar 7, 2024 8:57 am
For a moment Olivia looks crestfallen, but she bounces back to her grinning state quickly enough. "Well, I was kinda hoping you'd help me with finding a way out, but that's no worries. I take zenit too, by the way."

She raises her eyebrows at the knights still watching, but unable to move closer. Given their mechanical state, they seem content to keep watching for as long as it takes. She crosses her arms and ignores Jezlyn's quip, either too young or too absorbed to consider her meaning.

"Well, as long as you stay far enough away from the big round building over there, you should be good."
Mar 7, 2024 3:52 pm
"Don't need anything right now," Strong Ail says, still keeping his eyes on the knights. "I take it the building is where you found the crystal?"
Mar 7, 2024 8:02 pm
"Indeed it was." Olivia stares longingly at the building for a while. "I bet there's loads of other stuff in there too. A strong guy like you, you could carry it all! Oh, by the way, what brings y'all out this way anyhow?"

"I think the real question is how did you get down here and how are you planning to get out? It's pretty dangerous around here, as you almost discovered fatally." Jezlyn figures this girl is probably harmless, but she likes the scolding grandmother routine and it could be good to scare some sense into people who otherwise might be lacking it.
Mar 8, 2024 9:07 am
At the mention of the building and the knights, Velisse guardedly looked up again to make doubly sure that none of the knights were advancing on them. Their inference was correct, as long as they stayed beyond a certain distance, the knights did not seem to be interested in accosting them.

"How did you get in there anyway, surrounded by so many guards? Was there a special route you took? I mean, if you were imagining that we'd be able to get inside ourselves, and might want to take advantage of that fact, you should tell us how you got past those knights." She cottoned on to what Olivia was saying, and played along.
Mar 9, 2024 2:13 pm
"An airship, eh? Haven't seen one of them round here. Which way did you say you came from?" Olivia looks around, she seems suspicious of what Pinion said but doesn't dwell on it. "I got here walking. I was heading south by the Old Fortress, passing by on my way to Armorica when I spotted the crater and figured I'd take a lookie."

Her confidence trails off a little at Velisse's question about heading inside, and it's a few seconds before Olivia answers. "If you wanted to get in, really wanted, then there's a way into a lower level through those buildings over there. The Elonians don't know about it, but the monsters? They do. I ain't going back in there though, no way no how!"
Mar 10, 2024 4:52 am
"Not even for a share of what we find there that you weren't able to get your hands on the first time round?" Velisse tempted her with a twinkle in eye, now that she had figured out what motivated Olivia. Hopefully this thief could give them some advantage in making their way in and avoid some of the potential monsters she hinted at.
Mar 10, 2024 4:17 pm
Olivia hesitates, turning ever so slightly toward Velissa and pouting as she deliberates the decision, then shakes her head. "No can do. I barely got out of there alive the first time!"

"Could an old lady like you protect yourself, let alone a pretty, young catch like myself?"

Olivia eyed Jezlyn up. She didn’t wear a face of disgust, but rather of genuine morbid curiosity. Clearly, even so, she didn’t trust her protection as far as she could throw the old lady. Given her diminutive size, it wasn’t far.

"I recommend you make whatever it is you’re doing here quick, though. The lady with the spear didn’t look like she wanted to hang around."
Mar 12, 2024 6:01 pm
"We came to find out what shot us down, prevent it happening again on the way out," Strong Ail says. "Though right now I'm more interested in getting back before they leave us behind, thinking us dead."
Mar 13, 2024 12:38 pm
"So they aimed the big beam at you lot? I had wondered what they were doing with that. If you want to put a stop to that there’s some kinda control panel over there."

Olivia points southeast, past the central building.

"Not sure the boss lady is going to want you to mess with it though. Beyond that the slope is less steep, but getting there’s too dangerous for me."
Mar 14, 2024 1:06 pm
"Sounds like that's our destination." Velisse looked at her three companions who had a clear objective in mind.
Mar 15, 2024 3:15 am
Jezlyn nods. "Yep. Can't get out of here until we disable what brought us down. Danger or not, we need to head there. If you're too scared, young miss, then I guess we'll be parting ways here."
Mar 15, 2024 1:18 pm
After bidding Olivia a goodbye, and watching the girl set off with a lot of the same pace she had before, the group travels further toward the central building. You all notice that the closer you get, the more you can feel magic pulsing from it. It gives you the sense of something alive, like a beating heart. More than that, though, you notice that a lot of the scenery around you is more in tact than before.

The large blocks of obsidian appear more like buildings than stray rubble. The carved symbols have more regular form, and seem to shift and change if you stare at them for too long. You can even make out some buildings here and there, although their purpose is unfathomable. The knights seem more intact the closer you come to the central building as well. No longer ruined, they carry heavy weapons and face outwards in case anyone comes down into the crater.

Turning aside and heading in the direction Olivia had indicated, you find a narrow ally. At the end of it is a slope where the ceiling has caved in. No one has noticed it, not yet.

Dropping down into the area below, the party find themselves in a claustrophobic tunnel. The rooms seem fairly regular, but there are a few floors to the place. Who knows what was left behind, or left to wait for unwary travellers?

Very cool map and I love the list of moves and hazards and such. Quick question, I still have two status effects since we haven't had a chance to rest yet. Are we sure we want to go down into this dungeon without resting?

Moving through the underground tunnel takes longer than the group expected. Ail and Velisse prioritise safety, leading the group at a slower pace while keeping their eyes out for dangers and hazards. They mostly come in the form of skittish monsters; bats and bugs, or fallen blocks and piles of rubble that need shifting.

While they go, Pinion keeps his eye out for things of interest. He finds various parts left behind by whoever built this place, though their nature isn't like anything he's seen. He also comes across coins and other evidence that suggest this place hasn't had a proper search for quite some time, and the hazards that go with it.

After what feels like an hour but was probably far less, the group feel themselves move onto an ascending slope and they see threads of sunlight poking in at them from far away.
OOC:
For Enemies and Adversaries, I'd suggest either [Wlp+Mig] (if going for a combat/intimidate route) or [Dex+Ins] (If going for a stealthy route.)

Carrying on through the ruins, the group manage to avoid or scare away the worst of the monsters. As for the hazards, they find most easily avoided. Those they don't, they have to tough through to try and make it to the other side. A few take the forms of slopes they have to scramble up, while others are tight walls they have to pass through. It's slow going, and everyone wonders how Olivia seemed to have made it so easily.

Eventually, though, the group emerges in a circular room. It has a high ceiling, lit by the strange pulsing obsidian blocks. Murals cover the walls, depicting creatures of immense strength and angels floating over the heads of humans and holding their hands as though they would lift them away. The entire place has a sombre mood, made darker by the dust and damage of time.

At the far side, opposite the crack in the wall Velisse lead the group through, is a door. The door looks to be made of some kind of metal, and draws the eye with a faint warmth. Whatever is behind it has attracted the attention of the local monsters, and they seem to have taken this room as a nest. So far, only a pair of spiders remain, and they haven't noticed the group yet.

Unfortunately for the group, it seems the spiders aren't as unaware of their guests as they seem. Or rather, the ruins themselves aren't. As the group advances ready to spring their sneak attack, an object splits from the wall. Its humanoid in shape, though taller than a man by head and shoulders.

Like the walls its skin is obsidian with pulsing purple light. The stone is sculped into the form of armour the likes of which none of you have ever seen, and in one mighty fist it carries a hammer. In the other, a large round shield. It's passive face betrays no emotion, but it ignores the spiders and advances toward you, and they seize the opportunity to join it.

The spiders reach the party first, snipping and biting. One targets Pinion, thinking him a soft target, and sinks its poisoned pincers into his leg. A rush of pain stabs from the wound, but Pinion's attention is focussed on his cannon which engulfs the spider in a ball of flame. When it clears nothing remains but ash.

The other bites at Ail, but fairs to get past his guard. It's too fast for him to hit back though, skittering out of the way of each heavy hammer strike. The sound echoes through the tiny room.

The golem advances on Velisse and delivers a rattling blow from it's hammer. She stumbles, but it doesn't let up and readies itself for another swing. Her own sword glances off it's stone shield, showing no more effect than it would have if she attacked one of the walls. Nearby, Jezlyn scans the creature for an identifying feature. It's hard to discern but she can feel huge waves of strange magic flowing from it.

It doesn't look like it can take much more punishment though.

Meanwhile, while Pinion's cannon has little if any noticeable effect on the guardian's obsidian form Velisse's blade, imbued with dark lifeforce, cuts a deep gouge through the head and chest of the guardian like cutting through butter. The reaction causes a spark of pulsing purple light to crackle through the room, and for a moment the guardian's eyes pulse with a red hue.

Unable to decide on a target, the remaining spider is soon snuffed out by another gout of flame from Pinion's magitech cannon. Clearly it wasn't a malfunction that stopped it hurting the guardian. Unfortunately, when he turned to try his cannon on the guardian again he received a stone shield to the face not out of intent to harm but intent to move him aside.

The guardian closes the gap between it and Velisse, and draws up against Ail as he steps in the way. It's blows land ineffectually against his guard, but Velisse's counter attacks prove as ineffectual against it's shield. The sounds of the exchanged blows echo in the stone chamber, and possibly further beyond. Velisse's sword cuts deep into the Guardian again, this time the strength of her blade and her will cuts through it completely. Sliced in two, the top half comes away and a crackle of energy is released. A flash fills the room, followed by a loud bang, and then silence. The group are alone, all threats defeated.

The dust soon settles, showing the marks of where energy and attacks have gouged the walls or cracked the floor, but the room is otherwise unharmed. The door at the far side, heavy and made of something mixed between metal and stone, is unopened but spotless.

"Whew, that was one tough hunk of stone. Great job, Velisse." Jez walks to the door and peers at it. "Hm, this looks tough too. I don't suppose we can open it by just saying 'please'?"
Apr 29, 2024 8:58 am

OOC:
Ah my bad, I read that as Guardian 1 and 2. I'll save the MP for the Multi then.
Velisse stood there for a moment when the last guardian fell, leaning against her sword to catch her breath. She breathed, letting the others inspect the door that would lead them further.
OOC:
Running low at 12/65hp, so better make plans to rest after we check out that door.
Apr 30, 2024 5:02 pm
It doesn't look like saying please is the answer to getting the door open, in fact judging by the slightly lowered ceiling above the door it looks like Ail's suggestion is more likely. There's some kind of hidden contraption for opening the door up there, the question is how does one activate it so the door opens for you.

The door itself is black, darker in colour than the rock around it, and yet reflective. It looks as though it could be glass, except it looks stronger and isn't see through. Someone has engraved shapes on it, though they seem to have faded with time. At best you could maybe make out the shapes of winged humans and the sun. It's hard to be sure, though.

A handle carved into the door is about a meter or so off the floor. Its the most unremarkable piece of the entire construct.
May 1, 2024 9:05 am
As the rest evaluated what was most likely a trap, Velisse took the sensible preparation of reaching for her reserve of healing. She would need it if it were necessary for her to tank the trap, if they couldn't disarm it.

May 1, 2024 6:15 pm
The door doesn't appear to be trapped. Ail can freely interact with the door's handle. It's cold to his touch, but not unusually so, and feels more metallic than glassy which is surprising given the texture of the door. Otherwise, it's fairly mundane.

"I think I've got something here." Jezlyn puts her hand on a slightly less dusty portion of wall.
May 2, 2024 2:48 pm
Velisse stepped forward again, "Need me to open something? Or stand somewhere?" She assumed her stance even as Jezlyn touched the wall.
May 2, 2024 4:08 pm
Pinion looks over the etchings and flails around trying to match the poses he sees. He looks around as if he is expecting something to happen, but just sighs when nothing does. He replies to Jezlyn "Oh good, because I'm having no luck here."
May 13, 2024 9:32 am
When Jezlyn presses the section of the wall, a long period of nothing breaks the tension everyone in the room feels. As everyone releases the collective breath they'd been holding, though, they all hear a click. The panel slides into the wall, and reveals a cavity behind it. It's hard to make out what's in there between the shadow and the cobwebs, but everyone can see the outline of a handle.

Closer in Jezlyn can see another mural around the handle, barely bigger than the palm of her hand but carved with intricate detail. It depicts two winged people reaching out for each other's hands, while in the background fire and lightning cuts across the sky. The sun, or what looks like it, is hidden behind the clouds.
May 13, 2024 11:43 am
Jezlyn looks at the others with relief. "Well that went better than expected. I don't suppose a hidden handle would also be trapped. I see some kind of carvel mural in there too. Wish me luck," she says as she pulls the handle.
May 13, 2024 1:20 pm
The handle doesn't budge easily, but with some effort Jezlyn manages to pull it. When she does, something clicks. That's the only sound for a while, before the sound of cogs turning fills the silence and the doors open with a scrape across the floor. They get stuck a few times, showing how long it'd been since the doors were last opened, until the mechanism gives up with the doors only half open.

In the gloom, the group can see a corridor beyond. It isn't very well lit, but unlike the route underground, this one is flanked by crumbling statues and the scattered remains of fallen rocks. Fingers of light shine through the holes, illuminating the prone forms of Elonian soldiers, and at the far end something pulses with purple light.
May 14, 2024 4:24 pm
"Well, that looks ominous. Unfortunately, it also looks like the way out."
May 14, 2024 5:08 pm
"So, what say you? Once more into the fray?" Ail says hefting his large mallet onto his shoulder.
May 15, 2024 12:12 am
Jezlyn nods. "After you, big strong man. I'll bring up the rear. And when this is over I'm going to buy everyone a round at the next tavern we find. A round of tea, of course," she amends.
May 15, 2024 9:46 am
"That's my call," Velisse responded to Ail's call to the breach. She made her way to the front once again to enter first.
May 15, 2024 12:29 pm
In agreement, the group set off into the corridor, with Velissa and Ail taking point. As you walk, you feel the pulse of energy washing over you and you feel your fatigue fading away. Re-energised, you begin to pick up the pace a bit more. You don't notice at first that whatever's producing the pulse is drawing you in, until it's too late.

You emerge on a balcony surveying a central room. The room is a cylinder in shape, with the ceiling high above exposed to the passing clouds. A column runs up the center, flanked in copper and with various pipes and cables running off it. It pulses, sending out waves of crackling purple lightning and warmth.

In the space around it, various apparatus lie dormant. A heat haze above them suggests they've been used very recently, though the lack of people manning them tells you all you need about their workers being dismissed. Instead, a tall young woman stands facing the door with her back to the pillar. She has pale skin and braided silver hair. In one hand, resting easily, is a lance, while her other hangs at her side. Her body is wreathed in intricate silver armour, adorned with spells that give it a look of glass. It reflects the purple light, just the same as her fierce eyes do.

The only other thing in the room is a massive suit of red and black armour. It's taller than a man by more than a head, with long horns reaching yet further up. A black cape with a silver trim hangs from it's shoulders, and a hammer and shield lean against it's legs. It doesn't move, but an aura of menace exudes from it.

Jezlyn's prediction, based on the look on the woman's face as she turns, is accurate. She doesn't look at all happy to see the group, but she doesn't seem entirely angry either. She takes a few steps to stand below the balcony, facing you, and you hear the sounds of her armour rattling as she walks.

"Too late for what?" She asks, with a smirk.

"Kirin!" That armour was part of her history, the lost empire of Kirin, forever erased by Dunova!

"Who are you? And how are you related to Kirin?" Velisse half guessed what was transpiring, but needed to hear it herself.

Pinion is fixated on the column of pulsating purple lighting energy.

"He won't answer you- can't answer you." Desdemona follows Velisse's eyes to the suit of armour still stationary in the corner of the hall. "Not yet, but soon."

She looks back up at the group, her eyebrows raised a little. "Why would you want to stop me? I'm only trying to help people. The cost with worth the result, I assure you. Not that it matters, we're in the end stages now."

Her eyes settle on Jezlyn. "Familiar? You aren't to me, but I suppose I'll give you my name. Desdemona, of house Archyle in Elonia."
May 18, 2024 12:13 pm
"Strong Ail of house Circus," Strong Ail replies mockingly. "So how is this helping people?"
May 19, 2024 10:39 am
"What power do you have over the Kirin knights?" Velisse edged forward even as Desdemona spoke.
May 20, 2024 8:16 am
Desdemona's eyes narrow slightly at Ail's mocking tone, but she doesn't rise to the bait. Well, she doesn't as far as she's concerned. Instead she indicates the central column. "I know the cost seems high, but with this I can break a curse- No, the curse left on us so long ago."

She turns to Velisse. "Over Kirin? None. I thought Kirin died a long time ago, did it not?"

"Care to be more specific? I'm a sucker for a good villain monologue. What curse? What is this column? Spill the beans." Jezlyn puts her hands on her hips in a scolding grandmother fashion.
May 21, 2024 9:13 am
"A villain?" Desdemona's mask cracks a little more. "How dare you say something like that, judge me even though you've never-"

She pauses, and takes a breath, then shakes her head. "You really don't know how the gods cursed us? Our hubris brought their wrath, and now we're destined to lose our will and become machines."

For a moment she glances at the suit of armour as though she's going to say more, and then seems to think better of it. Instead, she takes in the pillar with a sweep of her hand. "This is a weapon, a weapon to restore our choice. Even if there are some who must be sacrificed to restore it. The result is worth it."
May 22, 2024 1:42 am
"Cursed? What are you talking about? I have plenty of choices! When I make tea I can choose earl white, earl grey, earl black, saffron, strawberry, mint, and the list goes on. Not to mention how much sugar or honey I add to it."
May 22, 2024 8:06 am
"Then you're one of the lucky ones." Desdemona sighs, her eyes downcast. "Some go their entire lives not once feeling the effects of the curse, while others barely have any time at all."

It seems she genuinely doesn't understand that you don't know what she's talking about. Whatever it is, she seems to think it's common knowledge. For a few long seconds she doesn't say anything else, and instead keeps her eyes pensively on the floor, until she eventually lifts them back to you.

She frowns. "Or perhaps Dunova has found a way to turn back the encroaching clockwork and hasn't shared it with the world? It wouldn't surprise me."

Velisse became even bolder as they spoke with Desdemona, now marching right up to the stationary suit of armour. "What curse needs breaking that a suit can achieve that I cannot?"
May 24, 2024 8:43 am
Desdemona grimaces, her arm wrapped protectively around herself.

The suit of armour responds to Velisse's question, it's helmet tilting forward for the vision slits to look down at her. No sound comes from within the suit as it does, nor does any new sound come when it looks to Desdemona as if for confirmation. She doesn't respond for a long time, a look of pain across her face, before she addresses the question.

"The suit cannot break the curse, you are looking at the effects of it." She closes her eyes. "A machine, which once was flesh."
May 24, 2024 8:08 pm
Pinion dares to speak up. "What, . . what happened to the suits former owner?"
May 26, 2024 8:23 am
"He..." Her jaw tightens, and her eyes loose focus. "He remains in the suit."

The words hang in the air, and then she whips around to face the group once again. She has a look of renewed determination on her face, and her hand clutching the spear is tighter.

"I need give you no more information, but time runs short. What are your intentions here?"
May 26, 2024 11:40 am
"Our airship was shot down. We were investigating some rumors of...bad people in the area of the old ruins."
May 27, 2024 2:29 am
"We'd like to leave, but ideally without getting shot down again. And if there is evil or injustice here, we'll put a stop to it! We'll try at least, it is just the four of us after all . . ."
May 28, 2024 7:49 am
"Well, I'm afraid that won't be possible." Desdemona sounds genuinely apologetic about the situation, but it doesn't stop her from bringing her spear to bear. "I've come to far too let anyone stop me now, and I can't risk you getting others involved."
May 28, 2024 8:26 am
Jez nods as if this is what she expected. "There's the part of the villain monologue I was waiting for. It's in all the great adventure books. 'There's no other choice. I've come too far to give up now. I won't let you stop me.' Etc., etc. Shall we get to the shooty, stabby parts then?" She readies her pistol.
May 28, 2024 9:20 am
"I am here because there's something present that gives me a clue as to how to restore the glory of the Kirin empire which I serve. I have a feeling this could be it." Velisse reached out, almost touching the suit of armour. "Is it not?" The conversation had come to an impasse, even Jezlyn sensed it was time for action.
May 28, 2024 10:48 am
"Perhaps it is the key, but I'm afraid you cannot have my brother's armour." Desdemona shakes her head, disappointed. "And now, inevitably, we come to blows."

With the initiative in his hands, Ail delivers a solid hit to Desdemona. She growls in pain and stumbles backward, but that doesn't stop the magic gathering around her. She lifts her hand from her weapon and calls "Ventus". At her command a gust of wind fills the room, it's blades cutting at any exposed flesh it can find.

Pinion, who had been edging closer to Tristan's armour, wasn't prepared for the spell and lost his footing. Too close to the armour he was trying to observe, he fell against it and knocked his head as it shifted. It crossed the hall in a pair of long strides, it's footsteps echoing and announcing it's intent to Ail who knocked it's gauntleted fist away with another swing of his mighty hammer.

With both of them close together, Velisse has an opportunity to test their defences. Summoning her life force, she performs a mighty swing. It scrapes across the front of Tristan's armour in a shower of sparks, but Desdemona is not so lucky. She gets caught by the end of the swing, wincing as the blade cuts into her shoulder and draws blood.

Her retaliation is weak, and it isn't hard for Velisse to parry the attack. She isn't able to seize the momentum as the suit of armour makes an imposing wall between her and Desdemona.

While the initial seconds of the engagement erupt, Jezlyn maintains her distance and observes. It's easy to see Desdemona's agility, how she reduces too much harm with her footwork and positioning, but it's far harder to analyze the eerie Tristan. The suit of armour makes no noise, and moves with perfect syncronisation.

Jezlyn's shots hit home, striking both Tristan and Desdemona. Though the armour barely seems to notice, the impact against Desdeomna has left her looking rattled. She focuses her energy, and the wind begins to pick up again, already the words of incantation are on her lips. The time doesn't come for her to cast her spell though.

A blast of flame slamming into Tristan's torso distracts her and that's all the time Velisse needs. She charges into the breach, while Ail covers Jezlyn read for another shot. Velisse's swing glances off Tristan's armour again, but it hits Desdemona directly. She stumbles back, wounded, her spell forgotten for the impact. With a hiss, she attempts a counterattack but Velisse is too fast to be pinned down.

With some patience she could potentially absorb the energy but there'd be no way of telling the kind of affect it would have on her, let alone if she'd be able to absorb the sheer amount the tower put out. Even still, it was a start, an option.

Curious, Jez approaches and inspects the pillar, hoping she has read or studied something similar in her long years.

Rolls

INSIGHT x2 - (2d10)

(55) = 10

While she might not have studied the pillar itself in her long years, Jez has seen a lot of the systems attached to it to bend the energy to the will of Elonia. The theories, while more advanced, are similar to those used in harnessing the elemental stones such as the air stones used for flight stones in an airship. While it might not knock out the pillar altogether, tampering with it might stop its connection to the physical world.

"Transfer excess energy over to me," Ail says, putting a hand on Velisse's shoulder. She shouldn't have to absorb it all alone.
OOC:
Ail don't know how to absorb the energy himself, but figures he could help out resisting its effect. Don't know what to roll, but guessing Might + Willpower and if I need to roll something else let me know.

Rolls

Might + Willpower - (1d10+1d8)

(1) + (8) = 9

"I'm not sure I know how, but I'll try." Her vigor drain ability was normally used on enemies, to weaken them as she cleaved at them. With an inanimate pillar she did not attempt to chop it down, but struck at it withe the point, to use it as a conduit. "See what you can do to shunt the excess from behind me," she instructed Ail.
OOC:
I rolled Ins + Wlp, but if a case could be made for using Mig, I added a roll for that as well.

Rolls

Ins+Wlp - (1d8+1d6)

(5) + (5) = 10

Mig - (1d10)

(1) = 1

Does the energy have to go into a person? Can we slowly dissipate it into the ground? Or blast it into the sky, just not at an airship?

"It's the only kind of magic transference I know. Still am not sure whether it'll kill me," Velisse mused with a lopsided grimace.

"All the more reason to find an alternate option." Pinion says, frantically looking around

"Oh for magika's sake, I'll do it," Jez grumbles and pushes Pinion out of the way. "All right, I'm ready. Let's do this."
OOC:
Just guessing on the attributes.

Rolls

Might + Will - (1d6+1d10)

(4) + (1) = 5

Velisse attempts to draw the magic off, her sword acting as the conduit. The energy crackles down the weapon light purple lightning, rushing over her and on to the people standing behind her. It doesn't feel like the dark energy she's used to, which is filled with emotion and passion, and instead it feels cold and hot at the same time.

As the seconds drag on, in what feels like a lifetime, the three's muscles begin to ache. For Velisse it feels as though she's trying to hold back a waterfall, while Ail is reminded of holding up the inverse human pyramids in his shows. Jezlyn is reminded of trying to stem a flow with her bare hands and try as she might it runs through her fingers. Even Pinion can feel the oppressive force as the magic finds an escape route.

And then it happens all at once. The three can't hold it any longer, they slip. Seeking the shortest route into the world, the magic explodes out of the column. The reaction is violent, and the three are flung away while the column cracks and splinters. With a noise as loud as the airship crash it comes apart, and then just as suddenly the world is plunged into complete silence.

In the eruption of energy everything fades to white.
