Adventure!

Mar 9, 2024 5:53 pm
You have been living and working aboard the interstellar scout ship Raptor for the last couple of weeks, having joined the crew at the nearby Tondra-3 spaceport. The ship’s captain, William Darcy, was not entirely forthcoming about his reasons for needing a new crew at such short notice, but he seemed harmless enough. In any case, you’re pretty sure the weird rumours swirling about him were just that: rumours. Any successful captain is bound to stir up ill-feeling among the crews of rival ships, right?

You have spent most of the time since leaving Tondra-3 getting used to your new responsibilities and running routine checks on the ship’s upgraded systems. The Raptor has certainly seen better days but, as the captain is fond of saying, she has it where it counts. You assume that he’s specifically referring to the cargo hold when he says this, since that’s where the enormous, frigate-class cloaking device sits bolted to the deck, gently humming within a tangle of power cables.

You were beginning to get quite adapted to the rhythm of life aboard ship when, early this morning, a message from the captain was sent to all hands: Feeling a bit off today. Probably just a hangover, but I am going to sleep it off in the medipod. Absolutely no interruptions!

No major issue. The systems are almost all up and running, and you will arrive at the Gate in a couple of hours. Then it’s just a case of waiting your turn to quantum tunnel to the next star system over.

And then, two minutes ago, the ship-wide alarm calling for all crew to report to the bridge…
OOC:
Please introduce your character as you arrive on the bridge!
Mar 10, 2024 12:19 am
I guess I'm first to arrive at the bridge! My name is Scott McGunner, and I'm the hired gun for this expedition. I enjoy weapons of all types , especially when I get to use them to poke holes in people. I can be chatty or friendly when needed, but I'm always bored unless there's a fight. I was in the middle of inspecting the ship's defenses and weapons, and was planning on performing my daily pistol maintenance and inspection when the alarm went off. Since I'm the first one to the bridge, I take the opportunity to grab a seat and get on with servicing my gun.

"Envoy Abara Biggs reporting to bridge." He steps out of the turbo lift, mustering the bridge crew and returning glances with a charismatic and disarming smile.
Abara's pointy ears tell of the intergalactic union of his parents. He does his best to come about as down to earth and approachable, but cannot fully hide a somewhat dignified air to his movements and gestures.

"Well howdy," Scott calls out. "What do you reckon they called us here for?" He clicks the pieces of his weapon together, having finished his work.

Lifting his hand in a greeting gesture, Abara turns to Scott McGunner: "Greetings, Scott, reassuring to see our security expert is already on the scene, and at the ready as it seems. But let us not act hastily, whatever it is, I am sure we are able to handle it, keeping a calm mind, using wits and charme!
Now, that I think of it, though, I did indeed hear somewhat ominous rumors back at Tondra-3 spaceport, about a hive armada being active in this region...
."
Turning to the bridge crew: "If you don't mind me asking, anything unusual on our sensors?"
Mar 11, 2024 5:53 pm
Ambrose strides onto the bridge, looking somewhat annoyed."What is going on up here? I was in the middle of a level 1 diagnostic of the cloaking device and had to stop to come up here!" He looks around at the assembled crew. "Where is the captain? Who is in charge of the ship?"
Mar 12, 2024 4:36 pm
Dr Wykes arrived as the other man was talking. She appears to be in her mid-40s, human, Caucasian, bright green eyes, with bob-cut silver blonde hair and a usual easy smile on her face, but right now it was looking a bit strained.

"Our lightweight of a Captain had too much to drink. He is sleeping it off in medical. Don't you read your messages?"

"Dr. Wykes." she offered to anyone who might not know or cared to remember her name.

"I haven't seen anything unusual on our sensors yet. You'll know by the big explosion sounds outside your window if I find something, so be sure to keep your ears open." Scott settles back in his seat with a grin and a chuckle. "Looks like the gang's all here."

"No, Doc, I have not caught up on the daily news yet so I didn't see that our captain has a hangover and can't fly the ship." Ambrose says, hands on hips. Ambrose is a stout man in his 30s with a strong, compact build. He keeps his hair short, and he always looks a little irritated when people speak to him, as though he was always expecting to be interrupted.

He shakes his head and looks down for a moment before continuing. "I apologize Doc, I shouldn't be short with you. I am just having one hell of a day, hell, let's be honest and say one hell of a week."
Mar 13, 2024 10:20 am
The bridge crew is minimal – the Raptor only needs a few people to run the ship under normal circumstances, and everyone on board was hired on by the captain at Tondra-3 at the same time as you were.

A young helm officer turns to you, Abara, and in answer to your question replies, "We just picked up a distress call. Here, let me replay it." They tap on the console in front of them and, after a second or two, you hear a voice, punctuated with violent bursts of static.

"are attacking the … with three, no, four … shields failing … no time."

The message loops a couple more times before the helm officer turns it off and looks to you all with a worried expression. "With Captain Darcy, um, out of commission, you’re the ranking officers. What shall we do?"
Mar 13, 2024 11:00 am
"Thank you helmsman" Abara says in an authorative tone, meant to be reassuring in the light of the captain's absence, "can you locate the source of the signal?"
Might they have been attacked by the hive armada?, Abara wonders to himself.
"In the meantime", Abara turns to the comms officer, "please send out following message: Ship in distress, this is the Consortium Ship Raptor. We have received your distress call and are ready to help. Who are you and who is attacking you?"
Mar 13, 2024 11:39 am
"They didn't broadcast for long enough to get a full position lock," they reply, "but it came from the general direction of the Gate." They gesture to their screen, on which a broad line traces a vector from the monolithic Gate structure—orbiting at the very edge of the planetary system—to the Raptor's current position.

They then busy themselves with sending out your message.
OOC:
Feel free to suggest rolls whenever you think you're doing something risky or if an action involves a degree of uncertainty! I would suggest that you don't immediately roll in this particular game, as you can get a boost from other players helping out and/or from your level of preparedness/skill (+1d if you're prepared and +1d if you're an expert.).
Mar 13, 2024 3:19 pm
"It's beginning to sound like I am goin to need to bolster the shields and weapons with some extra juice. I am going to head back to Engineering to brief my team." he says, turning and walking towards the bridge door. He turns his head and says, "Shout if you need me, but you know where I will be!" and then exits.

"Helmsman Steede, thank you, please take us to the Gate." The fresh academy graduate nods affirmatevily, but Abara can sense his nervousness. Must be his first real mission, the thinks to himself.

"Officer McGunner, what security measures do you advise in face of this unknown threat?"
OOC:
@onceandfuture, is it ok to name and flesh out npcs a little as above? If not, will edit.
Also thanks for the guidance on dice rolls, wasn't sure what level of uncertainty would require rolls.

"Maintaining course, aye sir." Steede nods. "At our current velocity, we will be within scanner range of the Gate in just under 30 minutes."
OOC:
For this game, absolutely feel free to give names to any unnamed NPCs you might be already know! Do be cautious, though, not to narrate the actions of these people, as how they react to you and your actions may be important in other scenes (and could depend on your dice rolls).

To easily add out-of-character text, highlight what you want to appear as OOC, and then click the 'OOC' button above the text box.

So, we have Redstone heading to Engineering, and Abara keeping an eye on things on the Bridge. What are the others up to in this moment?
Mar 14, 2024 2:47 pm
Scott smiles largely at the thought of all the weapons he has ready aboard the ship.

"We were given a nice budget for weapons and protective supplies before we set out, and I spent it all on the latest gear. Mostly manned space laser turrets, since I like to see the look in my adversary's eyes as I blast them away."

Another chuckle.

"We're also prepared for hand-to-hand combat in the event of a breach or raid, but it might be best to try to blow up the enemy before they get the chance to board us. Was there a weapon in which you were interested in particular?"

"Officer McGunner, it is much appreciated that you apparently haven taken great care in bolstering our defenses. Hopefully, we will be able to resolve the situation without resorting to violence, but if worst comes to worst, I am more than certain that we can count on your expertise and arsenal. Speaking of expertise, I am a layman when it comes to armed conflicts, so no particular weapon I was inquiring about."
Mar 15, 2024 10:02 am
"Coming into sensor range now," says Steede, as a holographic image materialises at the front of the Bridge. Redstone, this also pops up on your super-sweet space-phone-camera-communicator-scanner thing.

You all immediately recognise this system's Gate, and that something is very wrong. All space-faring civilisations use Gates to bridge the immense distances between the stars and, because of this, the queue to use them is usually pretty long. Maybe hundred on a slow day. As the hologram continues to resolve, though, you don't see an orderly line of spacecraft; you see a halo of ships scattering in every direction at maximum velocity.
OOC:
If anyone wants to investigate further, please roll and tell me what you're trying to do! This would seem to me to be a Lasers roll (i.e. you want to roll under your number), but I'm very happy to be persuaded otherwise if you can think of a reason to do it in a Feelings-ly way. Feel free to add a +1d if you think you're prepared or if you are an expert in whatever it is you are rolling for. Based on the outcome, I'll either narrate what you find, or ask you to!
Mar 15, 2024 11:52 pm
"Bridge, can you run simulations to find the most likely explanation for the scattered ships? It would be good to have some suggests before we go in there blind."
OOC:
I'm not sure if this is a roll? If so, my number is 5. I'll attach a roll just in case.

simulating events - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Mar 16, 2024 7:16 am
OOC:
One success! From the rules: 'If one die succeeds, you barely manage it. The GM inflicts a complication, harm, or cost.' I don't see anything super dramatic happening from a mixed-success here, so let's just say it's going to take a couple of minutes.
"Aye sir! Running simulation." Steede busies himself with his console, and an overlay appears on the holographic display: the ships slowly arcing back towards their origin...
Mar 16, 2024 7:18 am
OOC:
Anything from Dr Wykes, @Maxine, or is she happy to observe for now?
Mar 18, 2024 5:02 pm
Ambrose gets to work on bolstering the shields and weapons with more dedicated power, and sets aside some small amount for the cloaking device should they need to use it. He wished that he could have finished his diagnostic on the cloaking device before they got into a potential conflict, but he was confident that the cloaking device would run, just for how long and how well he wasn't sure of.
OOC:
Do you want a roll for him to reroute power?
Mar 18, 2024 5:06 pm
OOC:
Please do! You would definitely have +1d for expertise here. What is he moving power away from?
Mar 19, 2024 1:04 pm
Those of you still on the bridge watch on as the simulation completes and begins to run forward in time.

You see a long line of spacecraft queued to jump through the Gate. A few seconds after a long, sleek military vessel moves through the gateway, the queue suddenly scatters, the remaining craft accelerating as fast as their engines can carry them away from a point somewhere in the middle of the line.

"I'm beginning to pick up several debris clouds around that point," says Steede. "And what appear to be ships attached to the Gate itself."

As the holographic view continues to resolve, you can just about make out the pixellated shape of half a dozen spacecraft attached like limpets to the structure of the Gate.
Mar 19, 2024 2:38 pm
Ambrose gets down to work, moving some power away from systems that he knows won't help them in the potentially occurring battle. Astrometrics won't need much power, nor will the food delivery modules. He kept power up on life support-no reason to draw power from there too early. It can remain a backup source of power should he need it. He hums as he works, and directs his people to get on with the next task from under a console.

Rolls

Lasers Roll - (2d6)

(32) = 5

Mar 19, 2024 2:42 pm
OOC:
Two successes! Any roll involving shields or ship-based weapons will have +1d.
Mar 19, 2024 6:56 pm
"Well I'll be damned. Looks like some sort of black-hole thingy making the space jump gate sticky. This ain't my expertise, but I'll check my combat records to see if the Collective has ever seen anything like this before. Everyone else should do some looking also, 'cause I reckon we'll be on top of it soon. Either way, looks like we got some serious bustin' to do."
OOC:
I'm not sure if I get to roll to determine if I can identify what caused the explosion/sticky gate? I'm generally looking for basic info such as what the thing is, what kind of weaknesses it has, what dangers it might present. At the same time, if no one has seen/reported this before, the search will fail and the roll is useless. I'll go ahead and add a roll just in case, and hope I get at least a little info.

Rolls

Info check- I need to roll under 5 - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Mar 19, 2024 7:39 pm
OOC:
I think a roll is quite reasonable there! And you rolled exactly your number: LASER FEELINGS!

From the rules: "If you roll your number exactly, you have LASER FEELINGS. You get a special insight into what’s going on. Ask the GM a question and they’ll answer you honestly. Some good questions: What are they really feeling? Who’s behind this? How could I get them to _____? What should I be on the lookout for? What’s the best way to _____? What’s really going on here? (A roll of LASER FEELINGS counts as a success.)

While you ponder your question, I'll let you know that your initial single success roll tells you that you're looking at ships that have deliberately anchored themselves to the Gate.
Mar 19, 2024 11:11 pm
Abara straightens himself as the Raptor approaches the eery scene, hopefully reassuring the younger crewmen on the bridge. He turns to Kemp, the Betageuzian manning the comms, who notices Abara's attention before he speaks, his spindly antennas twitching.
"Comms Officer Kemp, please open hailing frequencies: Unknown vessels attached to the Gate, this is Consortium Ship Raptor, Envoy Abara Biggs speaking. We mean no harm but are here to provide assistance for those in need. Also, any information on what happened around this Gate would be very much appreciated!" Comms Officer Kemp, please open hailing frequencies: Unknown vessels, this is the Consortium Ship Raptor, Envoy Abara Biggs speaking. Be advised that you are trespassing on a Gate protected under intergalactic treaty. Identify yourselves and explain your actions!"
OOC:
I guess, I make a roll to see if Abara is succesful in eliciting a response. I have 2 and use feelings, so need to roll over. As I am a professional diplomat, I suppose I get +1d:

OOC:
I feel like the best question to ask is "What is going on here," in the sense of "Why are these ships docking on the gate? What is their intent? Are they all consenting to their actions, or are they being controlled by something else?"
Mar 22, 2024 3:59 pm
OOC:
They have deliberate, hostile intent at the Gate.

@Faluffh Feel free to retcon your message, if you like, on the assumption that Scott McGunner has shared this insight.
Mar 22, 2024 9:39 pm
"Seems like they mean to take down the gate! Some kind of terrorists? Is this gate important, or was it just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Either way, I don't think we can get out of here without a few scrapes on the knuckles."

Scott goes to ready the weapons in preparation for the upcoming confrontation.

The comms officer relays your message and then looks back at you, Abara: "We're just getting an empty ping back. The message was received successfully, but there's no response."
Mar 28, 2024 8:06 pm
Scott enters the bridge again back with a big grin.

"Weapons are locked and loaded. What do you say we take this bucket of bolts in to see what's going on?"
Mar 28, 2024 11:28 pm
Abara sends a welcoming nod to Scott: "I trust your strategic judgement, Mr. McGunner."
To the helm: "Mr Steed, please take us in."
Mar 30, 2024 11:44 am
As you approach, the viewport switches from a remote scan to an optical view.

A monolithic structure fills half the screen – a bright, vivid white against the darkness of space. The Gate is a hollow cylinder, over 10 kilometres long and three in diameter. As it slowly rotates around its axis, you can just about make out the six ships scattered across its surface, anchored tightly to the superstructure.
OOC:
You would know that, while the Gates are not crewed, its structure is accessible for maintenance, etc.

When the alarm sounded, Dr. R. B. Robo-Barbie was in her Dream-Cabin. There she dreamed of soaring through the vacuum of space alone for all eternity, surviving by feeding off of the solar power of the endless sea of stars. I would have to wear the same dress everyday forever!

She enters the wardrobe with this thought, and decides, I’d rather wear gold solar panels forever than titanium.
https://i.imgur.com/P8ygAOV.jpeg
She chooses the dress that has sleeves, and wears the magnetic-heeled goddess-sandals with the straps that cross-cross up to her thighs.

Though only eleven and a half inches tall (just over a foot in heels), the klak-klak-klacking of her gait can be heard well before she enters the swinging pet door that leads to the bridge. She gives Briggs a curtsy before hopping onto a table and sitting at the edge of it, one leg crossed over the other.

"Commander Briggs, it would appear we are entering a situation. According to Wikidatabanx, 50% of mortals throw caution to the wind. And there is no wind in space." She has a point. Mattel only knows what that point is. "But assuming I am not asked to perform a psyche-eval, I do have… other talents."

With a welcoming smile, Abara turns around "Dr. Robo-Barbie, I wasn't aware you have also been drafted for the Raptor, a very pleasant surprise! Maybe you could try indeed to pick up some psychic waves from those ships there anchoring at the gate?"

(Somewhat relucatantly) refocussing his attention on the bridge "In the meantime, are you able to ID these ships, Mr. Steed? Members of the Hive Armada, as I suspected, maybe?"
OOC:
Biggs makes the ID roll, (not sure if help from NPC would qualify, but assuming Helmsman Mr Steed is worth an extra die. Otherwise just ignore the extra die). Rolling Lasers, needs to be below 2.

We find Ambrose underneath a console, using a plasma wrench on the guts of the machine. He is muttering under his breath, and wiping the sweat from his brow as he works. He tweaks the wrench a little too hard out of frustration and a bang can be heard in the rest of engineering, along with some swear words in an unidentifiable language. He pulls himself out from under the console with a huff and stands up, shaking his head. He mutters something about needing a breather, and heads up to the bridge to see if he can't use the engineering console there to get some work done that doesn't require him to be in a cramped space.

He enters the bridge, and, seeing the diminutive figure of Dr. Robo-Barbie, he stops and watches. He does not want to interrupt her concentration with his sudden appearance. He walks slowly over to the engineering console and begins his work.
Apr 3, 2024 9:09 am
OOC:
With assistance from Robo-Barbie's vibe-check, your roll is a success, @Faluffh!
With the Raptor on final approach, Abara is able to take a closer look at the ships anchored to the hull of the Gate. They don't look anything like the craft that make up the Hive Armanda – you know that for sure. They're just too... normal.
OOC:
No danger of a real complication at this stage, but that's all the information you can glean.
Apr 3, 2024 10:57 pm
The ship's Abayan (shark-person) pilot Logic Bodily (Loggy to his friends) enters the bridge still blinking sleep from his inky-black eyes. His flight suit is rumpled and his silver-grey sandpaper skin is still slick from his hydrobunk (i.e. saltwater sleeping tank).

"Pardon my tardiness." His voice is mellifluous, almost comically so paired with his sharp teeth and unsettlingly predatory face. "I was assured the run to the gate would be easy, even for a human." He looks to the other senior officers and continues, oblivious to the delicate psychic operation going on near his feet. "What's our next move?"

An ensign shushes him and points to the tiny robot; he shrugs, stalks over to the pilot's station, and starts scrutinizing the readouts over the shoulder of a nervous looking junior Lieutenant.
Apr 4, 2024 5:47 pm
"It’s never too late to help," Robo-Barbie says. She ignores her CPU as it floods her mind with a multitude of examples in which it was objectively too late to help.

She flits onto Briggs’ console. "The distant ships seem to be under no pretense, though what I can glean from afar is limited."

When the shark man asks what the next move is, the doll-doctor waits patiently for the humans to answer.
Apr 4, 2024 11:04 pm
"Thanks for your kind assistance and insight, Dr. Robo-Barbie, very much appreciated."

"And, oh, glad to see you Logic Bodily on the bridge, helmsman Steede will be relieved to have a ma...uh, person of such expertise to watch over his operations."

Looking around to his fellow officers, Envoy Abara Biggs points out: "Well, diplomatic protocol might demand that we pay them a more close up and personal visit, of course bolstered by the appropriate security of our trusted Mr. McGunner. What do you say?"
Apr 5, 2024 10:25 am
Robo-Barbie definitely prefers diplomacy over shooting people. Her stun-gun is an unwieldy thing, and she cannot take a life.

If the ships will shoot each other, she can only help by anticipating the other ships’ maneuver. But Scott would be the one to McGun it down…

Do no harm.

She looks back at the distant ships. The current situation is not kill or be killed*.

"I am happy to assist with the diplomacy, Commander."

(*Or in her case, do what she can to keep The Raptor intact and her crew alive.)
Apr 7, 2024 7:27 am
Logic slides into the co-pilots station.

"Alright Lieutenant, take us in for a reconnaissance pass. If they don’t explain themselves we’ll want to be right on top of them anyways."

He keys in a trajectory that minimizes the Raptor’s exposure during approach and keeps his rough gray claws on the controls in case he needs to quickly make evasive maneuvers for the mammal at the helm.

The Raptor glides only a few hundred metres over the surface of the Gate towards the nearest anchored ship. On the screen as you approach, you see a fairly nondescript transport craft, its paintwork all but worn away. It has no running lights. With such a quick pass, Logic Bodily can glean no more information than that.
Apr 10, 2024 10:44 pm

Logic, frustrated at the Lieutenant's timid piloting, rises to join Abara.

"An Abayan must never let a minnow go into danger when a shark could take their place. I'm with you."

He instructs the current pilot: "Activate the cloaking device and set us down near the nearest freighter. Steady as she goes".

And with that, heads to the airlock to get suited up.
OOC:
I'm presuming that since the Raptor didn't take the fightercraft strength that we're too small to have shuttles onboard.
Apr 10, 2024 10:57 pm
Robo-Barbie is quick to step up to the proverbial plate.

"Though ‘minnow’ most accurately describes myself, it would give me great please to serve," she says matter-of-factly. But just to be on the safe side, she clarifies, "Diplomacy is among my primary functions. If you’re looking for bodyguards, well… that is a tertiary function for me at best."

She suddenly looks quite sheepish for a robot, "And it would depend on the body and the threat. I…" There are apparently little red lights under her cheeks, because now the robo-doll is actually blushing. "…I couldn’t…"

And in a nanosecond, she snaps out of it. (And the blush-lights turn off.)

"Haha. Not important to the mission. Which is diplomatic in nature, barring hostiles, correct, Commander?"

Abara gives Robo-Barbie an encouraging look: "As acting envoy of this vessel, I prefer a more civil approach myself, my dear, and am confident that words can solve most conflicts."
And as if to make a show of his diplomatic competence: "Yet a show of force can serve a valuable tool in any interaction. Glad to have you on the team, Mr. Logic!"

With that Abara touches a button on his belt, and the vacc-suit deploys out of his Consortium uniform, enclosing him like a well fitted glove.
Apr 11, 2024 10:37 am
A deep, almost imperceptible hum permeates the ship as the cloaking device spins up to full power. As you busy yourselves with your preparations, the lieutenant carefully guides the Raptor down, not far from the mysterious transport vessel. There is an ever-so-slight bump as it makes contact.

While there are no large airlocks on the surface of the Gate, there are smaller ones designed for maintenance access, and one of these is only a short spacewalk away. You will have to deal with micro-gravity outside the ship, but you have all been out in your vacc-suits before – some of you many, many times. You should be at the airlock controls in less than five minutes.

Abara completes his routine of the zero G stretching technique practiced on his father's home world and looks up: "I think it is safe to assume that whoever manned the vessel has already entered the Gate. We should follow them."

"I had better come along with you all too. We don't know if the reason that they are lounging on that gate is because they are broken down. Plus I find that the offer of a free repair here and there helps negotiations." Ambrose says, stepping out from behind the console and activating his own Vac suit.
Apr 15, 2024 1:42 pm
The outer airlock door opens and your helmet faceplates instantly polarise and darken as the bright white surface of the Gate stretches out in front of you.
OOC:
How are you heading over towards the maintenance airlock? While your vacc-suits do not have thrusters, your boots are able to be magnetised, and you will have a pouch containing a short length of cable, as well as magnetic anchors, and whatever else you can convince me makes sense!

"I follow your lead, comrade" says Logic, un-holstering his sidearm with a toothy, toothy grin and posting up beside Scott to cover him as he makes his entrance.
OOC:
I offer you +1d6 and to take my share of the consequences.

OOC:
Just to be clear, you're all still in your ship's airlock and will need to traverse across the surface of the Gate to reach the maintenance hatch.
Apr 17, 2024 2:56 pm
Ambrose makes an "ah" sound then he rifles through the pockets on his jumpsuit. He pulls out a small cylindrical device and hands one to each of the crew members, affixing his own onto the back of his suit. "Now, these here are portable thrusters. They are just filled with a hypercompressed gas that fires out occasionally. If you pull this here," he says pointing to a circle on the face of the cylinder, "that pulls out a cord that will allow you to hook a button for operating it under your thumb. They won't last long but they will help."
OOC:
GM let me know if you want me to roll Lasers for this bit of kit. I was thinking that since the thrusters won't last long we could roll to see if they continue to work each time they are used.

OOC:
Sounds great. The roll can come when if needed!

Robo-Barbie tells her commander, "I assure you, it will not be odd if you deem it necessary to carry me to ensure we are not separated in zero G. My first assignment was as a child’s toy, and I was held quite regularly."
Apr 19, 2024 12:40 am
With that, Scott steps out from the airlock of the ship, using his new compressed air can to navigate out. He waits for the others to join him before he sets off.
Apr 23, 2024 5:35 pm
Logic follows, weapon drawn, covering his comrades.
Apr 24, 2024 9:09 am
You emerge from the airlock and begin to manoeuvre towards the hatch. When you make contact with the surface of the Gate to propel forward, you occasionally feel a deep, pulsing vibration from within.

(This might be an unfortunate reminder for those of you who share a bulkhead wall with the captain, since you were subjected to his favourite Tondra-gabber techno playlist on repeat until the early hours of the morning.)

You have been moving forward carefully for a couple of minutes when, suddenly, a jet of gas bursts from an exhaust vent a little away. A second or so later there is another, off to your right and much nearer. You look down, and see this part of the surface is dotted with vents.

What do you do?
Apr 25, 2024 5:01 pm
"Let's be careful, maybe we better tether us together?" Abara suggests, careful no to proceed further for now.
"Maybe we can use the portable thrusters together, and maneuver ourselves over this hazard without running the risk of exhausting all thrusters at once and too soon."

Logic nods to Abara, seeing the wisdom in being tethered together so that nobody's flung into the void alone. As the crew passes the tether line between them, he reaches out with his electroreceptors to see if he feel the danger below their feet and help the crew find a safe path.

Robo_Barbie is too tiny to tow people with her cable. All being tether to them does for her is ensure she remains with the group.

So she offers words of encouragement via the comms. "In space, one small step and one giant leap are synonymous, due to the lack of resistance in the void. So simply follow your feelings, go with the flow, or lack thereof…"

Her words may be scientifically questionable, but her voice is soothing. Soothing enough to bolster confidence that this conga line will not accidentally self-jettison into the void? Well…

Abara signals his fellow crewmen, "Time for a leap of faith!" and gently pushes the buttons on his thrusters, just long enough to reach momentum that will lift up the tethered-together group, in a shallow trajectory over the Gate's hull, towards the hatch, careful to not come to close to the vents.

Abara waits for just the right moment and then triggers his thrusters. Each of you feels a slight lurch as the cable goes taut, then you are gliding above the vent field – which, you can see from this vantage point, stretches far out of view to either side.

After just a few seconds, you land gently next to the airlock hatch. The airlock looks to be pretty standard: the outer hatch itself has a small window, and beside it is a red handle to operate the locking mechanism. You're confident you could all fit inside and get through in one cycle.
May 2, 2024 3:06 am
"Nice jump, everyone. Looks like there's no use standin' here, so let's git inside."

Scott pulls on the red handle.

Abara follows behind McGunner, ready to provide assistance, hopefully in establishing verbal contact, but also prepared to engage, should it be necessary...

The airlock cycles and the wall panels light up a vivid green. The inner door opens and you emerge into a mid-sized changing room lined with equipment cubbies. In the corner, piled up on the floor, are a bunch of well-used industrial vac suits and helmets. Maybe five or six sets, at first glance.
May 9, 2024 2:30 pm
Robo-Barbie observes the state of the suits, the interior of the changing room, and tries to glean what she can about the crew as a psychologist.

"Pirates, you are outnumbered. Do not resist us," she says very calmly in all the chaos. The flash from the grenade does not affect her eyes. But being a lightweight, she flaps about like a kite on her tether, still attached to Briggs’ belt.

Her voice is still calm and soothing. (She is mechanical after all!) "Those of you still conscious, please surrender your weapons and keep all hands in the air."

(Saying "all" rather than "both" is standard procedure, and has been ever since the time she negotiated with Eight-Armed Clyde.)

In response both to being flashbanged and to Robo-Barbie's calm request, you see three pirates who were still holding weapons throw them to the floor and shakily raise their hands, clearly dazed from the effects of the grenade. Two figures lie unconscious in the doorway.

Scott does a quick scan for more explosives. There is quite a bit of explosive residue here, so you can only get a localised reading [that's your complication], but you're confident there are no more charges here.

Ambrose checks the walls and conduits for something wired directly into the Gate's systems. It takes a moment, but you do catch something, some kind of signal, folded into the regular data stream. Your hand-held instruments are not able to disentangle what it is [and that's your complication].
May 19, 2024 4:47 pm
"Seems like this room is clear of explosives. We'll have to check the other rooms as we go. Ambrose, any readings?"
May 19, 2024 11:01 pm
Robo-Barbie decides she can best help by conversing with a prisoner.

"Your peaceful surrender is appreciated. Now we can engage in relatively civil discourse. What are your interests in the destruction of the gate?"

Robo-Barbie is certainly an expert when it comes to making humans feel comfortable enough to share aloud. She is pleasantly surprised (read: unprepared) by the combination of nonlethal force and quick surrender, so this little talk should go swimmingly.

She smiles pleasantly as she adds a bit: "Or… since the interests are not likely yours personally, whose interests are they? I thank you in advance for your obligatory cooperation."

Another pirate gestures effusively with his four raised arms: "Yeah! Even at maximum speed, that navy frigate won't be able to get back to Tondra for years. And when they do, we'll be ready for 'em. We're going to make this system our new base of operations. It'll be a pirate utopia."

May 21, 2024 10:47 am
"Dystopia," Robo-Barbie finger-waggily replies. "In order to have a Utopia, there must be order. Already, your plans have brought you chaos.

"Given this grandiose fallacy, it is possible that the men in my crew are up to the challenge of ‘ain’t nothing they can…’"
She pauses. "Your double negative means you say they can do something about it. In which case, let us hope, and pray to a deity of choice, you are correct."

The doll turns to someone strong and scary. Preferably the shark man, if he’s not busy.

"It is standard procedure to cuff any conscious prisoners so they cause no additional mischief. Will you kindly to the honors?"
May 23, 2024 5:57 pm
Scott asks the prisoner, "What is to goal of the pirate Utopia? You accomplish a little terrorism, seize control of the region, and then... What was the plan exactly?"
May 26, 2024 9:55 am
The pirate turns to Scott: "That frigate, the bloody Téméraire, has been patrolling this system for the last two years. And for those two years we've had to hide like..." He pauses, searching for the right word. "... like, well, like common criminals! But by now the other crews will be reaching their positions on the power grid and getting ready to shut this thing down for good. Then we can get back to business."

Robo-Barbie considers this warning. She quickly turns to the prisoner.

"If we have the choice of being blown up or escaping in time, that still results in you getting blown up. Yet, you taunt us for being too late.

"There is nothing in it for you,"
she notes. And being a psychologist (but also a doll who counciled a young girl growing up and trying to understand love), she assumes Love must be the angle. She does not assume the Love to be a woman, necessarily, nor does she assume the Love is romantic. In the Pirate Life, there are many kinds of Love, and the L-Word may be best left unspoken, if the little doctor is to use this Love to gather information.

"And I mean no offense," she goes on, "but when riches are the goal, selflessness is a rarity. Therefore, I must conclude that your selflessness is for another. Another pirate on another ship. Whoever this person is, the person is very important to you.

"You should cooperate and survive this day. This and many more. So tell us, how do we stop the bombs from blowing up, and in the process, blowing you up? Do not cooperate for me or yourself, but for the important person who surely wants you to live?"

The prisoner looks up at you, Robo-Barbie, what appears to be genuine confusion written across his face.

"Bombs? Whaddaya mean bombs?" He looks around at the busted doorway, before barking a short laugh. "You mean the door? That was just a breach charge so we could get to the power grid proper."

He turns to the other pirates, laughing again. "They think we're trying to get blown to hell! Nah, we're just turning off to this stupid thing. Who knows when the crew'll need it again down the road. Blowing it up... so wasteful."

Logic, your mind goes back to a stuffy classroom. You're doodling on your pad, half paying attention to the professor's lecture but mainly thinking about the mechanics of romance. Like, isn't it so interesting that a Gate's electromagnetic array supports a quantum tunnel through mutual attraction, and when one of those elements suddenly no longer attracts the other, it all spectacularly collapses? It's so poetic.
OOC:
I am very much enjoying the bonus die rationale, everyone!

Jun 3, 2024 12:26 pm
OOC:
That's a good question. I throught the lasers was more of the active side, while the feelings was more of the passive side. If I were trying to persuade the prisoner or have a heart to heart with them, that would definitely be feelings. But in this case, I don't care about the prisoner at all, and I am trying to demonstrate that I am willing to kill them without caring (logic and action), so they should give me the info I want. I feel so little for this criminal scum that a feelings roll does not seem accurate to me. But also I just made that up, and if I'm wrong, I totally understand and will happily accept my 2 failures.

Let's go for it it this instance, since McGunner is simply laying out a chain of events that will happen if the pirate is not helpful. I think as long as we're consistent with the approach when rolling, we're all set!
The pirate's bravado evaporates in an instant.

"They– they're heading to the power couplers! I– I've got a map."

He cautiously reaches for a piece of paper that's protruding from his chest pocket. As he hands it over, you see a faded schematic of the Gate. Three locations are marked with a big red 'X' and a number.

"Them's the couplers. We're gonna– we were supposed to meet up with one of the other crews and help cut the power to number one." He nods towards to a spilled bag of tools on the floor. "It'll take 'em longer now, I'm guessing."

You see the location marked as '1' is only a few minutes away, through the busted door and down a couple of corridors. Location '2' is a third of the way around the circumference of the Gate and location '3' another third again. A small rapid-transit system built into the skin of the Gate appears to link all three locations.
Jun 4, 2024 10:56 am
Abara had been keeping in the background, trusting the physical presences of his crewmates (aided by some robo-charme) would be most efficient in the pirates` interrogation. Now he speaks up: "I am not a tactical expert, but would assume if we start at the closest location and thwart the pirates' doing there, we would again buy some time. That way we can work our way forward and methodically foil their plans, what do you think?
Jun 4, 2024 3:50 pm
"We don't know how far along they are at the other gates, and there is no way to know. I think we might want to split up, at least into two teams if not three." he stops for a moment, and really thinks about the situation they are in. "...unless...no I don't think I can see another option right now if we are going to stop all three gangs at once."

Laser feelings question: What's the best way to stop the pirares from causing damage?
Jun 6, 2024 4:29 am
Logic traces a clawed finger over the map, eyes grim.

"It is imperative that we stop these foolish pirates. The gate is not just a physical machine; it subtends a delicate quantum infrastructure, like the casing of our ship's warp core. Compromise the infrastructure and the whole edifice comes crashing down most ... energetically." His grim visage momentarily flickers even grimmer as he contemplates the destruction that a warp gate collapse would cause.

"I propose that we quickly secure this power coupler and then divide into two strike teams to investigate the others. Even if one falls, perhaps we can keep the quantum seal intact."

Jun 7, 2024 4:37 pm
Redstone and McGunner come together and quickly figure out that the power outage was due to one of the three power couplers being forcefully disconnected. With this information, and thinking back to the simulation on the bridge, Logic does some time-of-flight calculations on the back of a space napkin and pinpoints exactly which one it must have been: the furthest, #3 on the map.
OOC:

Prevent them from disrupting the two remaining couplers. There are many ways to accomplish this, peacefully or otherwise, but you will need to get close for all of them.
Quote:
Who's behind this?
The pirates are a loose collective of raiders. Currently, they are led by someone by the name of Harper.
Just two couplers remain active. Time is getting short. What do you do?
Jun 8, 2024 11:29 am
"I vote we haul ass to the closest coupler and stop these scum before they do some real damage."
Jun 9, 2024 12:44 am
"Mr. McGunner, thank you for this acute tactical evaluation. Let us hurry!"
Abara gets in line behind his fellow crewmates, phaser set to stun.

Jun 10, 2024 4:55 pm
Logic checks the charge on his sidearm and sniffs the air.

"Go swiftly, and secure the second coupler. I will neutralize any bottom feeders still in the vicinity of this one."

With that, he stalks off to find the second group of pirates.

Jun 11, 2024 10:00 pm

"Mr. Logic, let me accompany you, in case unorthodox should methods be required."
Jun 16, 2024 12:42 pm
Logic and Abara, you hustle down the maintenance corridor to reach the nearest coupler.

After a couple of minutes, you emerge onto a catwalk which runs around the internal equator of a sphere at least a hundred metres in diameter. The moment you step of out the corridor, Logic, your electroreceptors pick up massively powerful electromagnetic fields in the air. A cluster of dark machines at the base of the sphere breaks the otherwise clean white interior.

A quarter of the way around the gantry, you can both see three pirates awkwardly making their way down. They have ropes tied to the catwalk guard rail.

McGunner and Robo Barbie, you split off from the others, heading towards the rapid transit system marked on the map. When you arrive, you find a soft vacuum maglev with capsules large enough for a couple of average-sized humanoids. A capsule is already in place, its door open.

Short answer: she’s predicting pirates’ behaviors. (Or attempting to anyway.)

Jun 28, 2024 10:13 pm
Robo-Barbie and McGunner, the hatch of your transport pod opens and you are immediately face-to-face with two pirates.

"About time," says one of the two, an Abayan in a banged-up SCOBA suit. "You were supposed to be here ten minutes ago." He turns to walk down the corridor, waving you to follow.

The other pirate, an older human woman, walks alongside and looks you both over with a frown. "Where'd you get them uniforms?"

Robo-Barbie replies, "This is what was available in my size."

"We are late," she says notably unapologetically, "to compensate for the delay of the group at Coupler 1. So they’re on track, but as you say, we’re off by ten minutes.

"What issues do you foresee?"
she starts, intent on asking follow-up questions simply meant to elicit information. As long as the Pirates think she and McGunner are pirates too, it seems likely the real pirates can be thwarted non-violently.

Logic watches the pirate careen down the curved wall of the generator chamber before crashing to a halt.

"Are you injured?" he asks the hapless saboteur. "I'm not going to say that this kind of mishap always attends criminality, but in your case I hope you'll grant that the correlation is suggestive."

With Abara's help, he sets to restraining and disarming the pirates before reading them their rights per the Federation Restraint, Rehability, and Reintegration Program.
Jun 30, 2024 1:47 pm
"What issues do I foresee?" replies the pirate, apparently convinced by your explanation. "It ain't really my job to foresee but, if I'm being honest with you, I am a bit concerned about climbing down into this thing..." She gestures down as you emerge onto the catwalk of the coupler.

"Ah, it'll be fine. Says the Abayan, as he secures his cable the railing. "It's the climb back out that's gonna be the hard bit."
OOC:
Legendary_Sidekick says:
My question to the GM: what incentive can we give the pirates to back down from blowing up the gate?.
It's highly unlikely the pirates have thought this plan through even a little bit. You could mention that shutting down the Gate means there will be no new ships for them to steal from. Alternatively, you could try and convince them of what you learned: that cutting the power will result in catastrophe for anyone within a couple of light-minutes.
Jun 30, 2024 1:57 pm
Meanwhile, Logic stands above a heap of pirate. It groans pitifully. With Abara, you successfully disarm and restrain the other two. You have just finished hoisting them back up to the catwalk when there's a buzz on your super-sweet space-phone-camera-communicator-scanner thing. It's the ship's computer: there's been a proximity alert. A large ship is on final approach to the Gate...
Jul 1, 2024 11:53 am
Abara pops out his communicator: "Helmsman Steed, do you read? Seems there is a ship approaching. Are you able to identify the vessel?"
Jul 1, 2024 4:21 pm
"Envoy Biggs," says Logic, holstering his weapon now that the pirates are restrained, "these detainees must be processed according to F.R.R.R.P regulation, but if the approaching vessel proves hostile the Raptor will need its pilot. I trust you to care for them with all the diligence they're owed under federation protocol." Logic starts scrambling back up the ropes towards the ship's hull.

"Oh, and tell the human helmsman to warm up the engines and..." Logic hesitates, "I wouldn't usually trust a human pilot to perform such delicate maneuvers so close to a jump ring, but our situation is precarious already, so tell them to warm up the engines and rendezvous with me at the airlock."
Jul 1, 2024 8:57 pm
Robo_Barbie replies to the lady pirate, "It’s refreshing to me that you are being honest, as your microexpressions confirm. Being an android, my program forced me to be honest," she lies, "and since concerns are being aired, which concern your safety, I should air some concerns of my own.

"When we cut the power, the effect will be catastrophic for anyone within a light minute. As an android, I can survive loss of oxygen or the vacuum of space. But it is likely that none of the pirate groups will survive this.

"Furthermore, shutting down the gate means there will be no new ships to steal from."
She looks to the Abayan, then the lady. "This does not seem like a plan intended for your gain, even if you do survive the immediate effect of the shutdown." This is the truth, as are her next words, "My main objective is to keep everyone alive."

As an android, she probably should not care whether people live or die. Caring should be impossible for her. Yet, she believes she does care.

The pirates at the other coupler have been essentially nullified by Abara and Logic, and so the Gate is safe for now. But Harper? From what you've heard, he might not go down without a fight...

And his shooting skills will be needed against Harper.

She says to the pirates, "You understand. To complete this mission is death. I can see this comes as a shock. I recommend the two of you find a cabin and lay low.

"I will assess whether this is a sting operation or we are being used as sacrificial pawns. A plausible third option is simply that the plan is fatally flawed."

Logic and Abara, after securing the pirates, you rendezvous with the Raptor at the nearest airlock. With Logic assisting at the helm you quickly and stealthily skim over the surface of the Gate to an access point where Robo-Barbie and McGunner can join the ship, having successfully dealt with the pirates at their location. Redstone is also now back on board.

As you reconvene on the bridge, updating each other on the events of the last hour or so, you see on the screen the pirate flagship making its final approach. It's enormous. It appears to be made up of many smaller craft crudely welded together; the residue of laser impacts streak the hull and you can make out more serious damage from missile impacts dotted all over the ship's superstructure.

Jul 15, 2024 4:44 pm
Logic, visibly more comfortable now that his rough, clawed hands are back on the ship's controls, grins. "A cunning plan, McGunner! Land a small team on their ramshackle leviathan, distract the crew by engaging them ship-to-ship, and then strike the decisive blow from within."

He nudges the controls and starts to approach the flagship, looking for an angle where its chaotic jumble of sensors might be blind.

Robo_Barbie backs up her commander’s warning. "This is check, checkmate in one, Captain Harper. Concede as if your life depends on it."

From her station, she may appear to be a human-sized android to Captain Harper. She wonders if her appearance might allure Harper enough to throw him off his game. She swivels her doll chair and switches which leg is crossed over which, mindful of the camera angle.

"Life, Captain Harper. It is something an android such as myself does not have, and therefore, cannot lose.

"It is something you do not have to lose. So surrender. Come aboard. As the ship’s doctor, I will be the one to examine you, regardless of outcome."
Dead or alive. "Your mind must be… fascinating."

Regardless of what the captain actually does, being the psychologist that she is, Robo_Barbie would like to know: did I connect to this man at all? Or was he going to fight us no matter what I said?

In that case, I'll answer yours in advance: With Logic firing on the ship, it would be most effective to transfer power to weapons. Do you have any burning questions, @natknight, or shall we move ahead?

While the big guns are shooting down the big enemy ship, Scott is manning a small auxiliary gun trying to gun down the smaller enemy boarding vessels that are making their way towards the ship looking to board. "No one sets foot on my vessel without my permission."

Abara opens a channel to Harper and delivers his ultimatum. You hear a static burst which quickly resolves itself into derisive laughter. "State-of-the-art ship, is it? Could’ve fooled me." And then Robo-Barbie’s trained ear hears something like doubt creep into his voice. "But I see now that you did take out my elite crew, so I suppose you can’t be entirely without—"

Meanwhile, at his engineering console, Redstone’s fingers are a blur as he works to redirect the ship’s power. The lights on the bridge noticeably dim as every single spare watt that the ship has available is funnelled to the weapons systems. Somewhere, Captain Darcy’s private mini-fridge loses power.

With the pirate still mid-monologue, Logic subtly manipulates the manoeuvring thrusters and the Raptor gently rotates around its centre of mass until, finally, the ship’s entire laser battery is brought to bear against the pirate flagship.

With a nod from Redstone, Logic gives the signal. The screen goes white in an instant.

As the screen adjusts to the brightness of the barrage and you blink away the after-images, you see the pirate flagship beginning to come apart. The lasers hit their mark and then some.

Abara again: "That was only a small taste of what this ship is capable of, I was hardly able to restrain my weapons officer. Next one’s gonna be deadly, your choice Captain Harper!"

Silence.

Robo-Barbie pipes up: "This is check, checkmate in one, Captain Harper. Concede as if your life depends on it."

Harper’s voice comes on over the comms. He is clearly shaken, but no less contemptuous than he was before. Robo-Barbie, you can hear from his tone that surrender was never on the cards. "You may have stopped us this time," he says. "But you know we’ll be back stronger than ever!"

Trying his best to concentrate despite the pirate’s maniacal rambling, McGunner begins to pick off debris heading towards the Raptor with one of the auxiliary guns. What’s approaching is not strictly a collection of boarding vessels, but they certainly are the remnants of ships, and they are no less dangerous if they were to collide with your vessel.

Harper cuts the connection and you watch as a ramshackle escape pod ejects from the command deck of the flagship. Its engines fire and it accelerates rapidly away from the disintegrating hulk … and straight into the debris cloud left over from the pirate’s initial attack on the Gate.

After a moment, there is a tiny explosion against the darkness of space. And then nothing.

In the hours that follow, you work to make sure the ship is secure and organise pick up for the remaining pirates still on the Gate. By mid-afternoon, Darcy emerges from the medipod and joins you all on the bridge.

"So," he says with a yawn, cup of coffee in hand. "Did I miss anything?"

And I think we’ll leave it there! Thanks so much for playing everyone, and especially for your patience while I figured out how to run a PbP game—it’s much appreciated. If anyone would like to give their character an epilogue, please do!

EPILOGUE . . .

The android replies to Captain Darcy, "Yes sir. You have missed my resignation, active upon disembarking. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve on the Raptor." She salutes the captain.

Later, in private, she tells the other men, "Your handling of the mission was superb. I must go. I have unfinished business from two centuries ago, and it cannot be ignored."
It hit her when she found herself caring about the pirates’ lives. Why was she so nurturing? Why did life matter at all to a machine?

In a snap, the memories of two hundred sixteen years ago flooded into her mind. The little girl in bed with the doll. The college girl holding that doll in her dorm.

Those memories were not of the same girl. They were from the same year. The college girl was crying over her daughter who lay in a hospital bed, her little body overtaken by the parasites that she inhaled during the breach on Level 426!

She remembers storming over to the boys’ dorm.

"Ellen? I thought we had an understandi—"

"Yeah! Prom night was a mistake, we moved on—I even took Rebecca to that stupid colony on Mars so we’d both have an excuse for you to be unin… ugh! She’s still your daughter, Lenny!"

"But what do you want me to do? Dammit, Ellen! I’m an engineering major, not a med student!"

And that’s when Ellen handed her ex-boyfriend the doll.

It was insane. It was illegal. Transferring a soul to an android body could burn the circuitry, and it’s a one-way trip. But there was no cure for Rebacca. With mother living on as a doll and daughter frozen in cryogenic sleep, perhaps one day there would be.

There is, Robo_Barbie realizes. There always was. I just didn’t think it would be any kind of life. But the men on the Raptor… they treated me as a person. It took a century and a half for humans to accept droids as members of society. Droids were typically human sized, but being a doll had its perks, such as an affordable Dreamhouse…
"Mom?"

Rebecca had not experienced the passage of time. She was of course surprised to awaken as an android who stood eye-level to Barbie’s bellybutton.

Of course the child freaked. But there was no way to unfreeze her body without unleashing hellish Martian parasites on the populace. This was the only way to save the child, and Robo_Barbie had been enjoying life as a doll.

Of course, that was only because she had suppressed the memory of the daughter she couldn’t save. Once she remembered, she just had to complete the mission and go to her.

Rebecca is now an android wired into the body of Barbie’s youngest sister. The two dolls pass for mother and child.

"So should I call myself Robo_Skipper?"

It’s a Chelsea doll, but "Yes, Beck..I mean… Skipper. Any name you please."

"Does the Dreamhouse have a slide?"

"Mattel has made many upgrades to the Barbie Dreamhouse over the past couple centuries."

The two dolls disembark from their drone and walk hand-in-hand through a forest of flowers and into a ‘rabbit hole’ that leads to a crystal cavern. In this cavern where no human can go is a grand pink mansion constructed from several Dreamhouse sets!

And yes, it has a slide.

@onceandfuture, many thanks for gm'ing! This was coincidentally my debut as a pbp player and I had a blast!
Everyone, thanks for being such great crewmates!
Abara's Epilogue

In the quiet aftermath of the battle against the fearsome space pirates, Abara stood on the observation deck of the Raptor, gazing out into the endless expanse of stars.

Abara had always been driven by a desire to bridge worlds, to bring together the many disparate species of the cosmos. This adventure had tested that resolve, yet it had also brought him closer to his goal than ever before. In his crewmates he had met interesting and unique characters, be their human, alien, or artificial. Together with their help and through diplomacy and ingenuity, he had defeated a significant threat to the Consortium.

As the ship sailed into the calm, Abara received a transmission. It was a signal from a distant Consortium vessel—one he had not heard from in years. His heart skipped a beat as he recognized the call sign. Could it be her? The love he had left behind, the one person who had been missing from his life of adventure?

The message was brief, a simple greeting, but it was enough. Enough to remind him that even as he crossed the galaxy in search of new friends and allies, some connections were timeless, waiting for the right moment to rekindle.

With a smile, Abara turned away from the stars and rejoined his crewmates. There would be more adventures to come, more aliens to meet, and perhaps, at last, a chance to reconnect with the one he had lost. But for now, he was content. The mission was successful, the galaxy a little safer, and the stars a little brighter...

Logic's Epilogue

After an eventful day, Logic Bodily slinks into his quarters exhausted. With a clip-hiss-dribble he detaches his Self-Contained Out-of Water Breathing Aparatus and tucks it into its dock to be cleaned and recharged overnight. Then with visible bliss he slides into his quarters proper: the large saltwater tank that all Abayans favour when they're off-world.

He sinks to the bottom and relishes the return to his natural environs, savouring the clean, oxygenated, almost-but-not-quite-warm water, lying still so he could feel the tiny currents that the hyro-regulators introduce as cycle the tank.

After a few minutes he calls up a holo-display (which is a bit fuzzy underwater) and starts his reports for the day: approbation for his crew-mates, for Abara's cool head, for RB's penetrating cleverness, McGunner's prowess, and Flint's resourcefulness. Some notes to himself about drills to go through with the flight crew; their performance had been adequate, but there was still obvious room for improvement, even for humans. And another entry in a rather long log of the Captain's... irregular record of command.

With the final detail logged, he drifted to the middle of the tank where freshly oxygenated water would waft over his gills and slept soundly, very soundly, one eye at a time.
