PART 1: SEARCH FOR THE FORGOTTEN PHARAOH

As the adventure begins, the Destined Delvers are in possession of the funerary mask of the Sky Pharaoh Hakotep I—now the artifact known as the Mask of the Forgotten Pharaoh—and have learned of the Cult of the Forgotten Pharaoh, who seeks the mask for terrible reasons. Although the Destined Delvers defeated the cult’s members in Wati, you are fully aware that the cult will not be stymied so easily, and with the mask now in their hands, you will again find yourselves the targets of the cult sooner or later.

With the assistance of the Grand Mausoleum, you come to the realization that very few details on Hakotep I, the Mask of the Forgotten Pharaoh, or the Cult of the Forgotten Pharaoh can be found in Wati, but the neighboring city of Tephu is home to the Great Library, the largest repository of knowledge in the region, if not all of Osirion. If there is any information to be found, the Great Library of Tephu is the place to search.

Tephu lies downstream from Wati to the northwest, just a short boat ride across the River Sphinx. Ferries regularly ply the river, conveying people, goods, and livestock across the water, and their pilots cram the docks in the Veins and Bargetown—Wati’s harbor districts—looking for passengers. Wati’s ferrymen are forceful—some would say overbearing—and fall over themselves to obtain fares. The average fare for passage to Tephu is 5 sp per person (twice that for creatures larger than Medium or difficult to transport), though you may be able to negotiate a better rate. Low fares typically increase once a ferry is halfway across the river, and the crocodiles that inhabit the river make most passengers begrudgingly pay the new, higher rate to get safely across. A ferry journey is usually shared with farmers, heaped piles of goods, and livestock such as chickens, cows, and even camels, making for a noisy and smelly, but thankfully short, trip. The journey takes only a few hours and is uneventful.

Like most Osirian cities on the banks of the River Sphinx, Tephu is hot, dusty, and perpetually busy. Its streets are full of hawkers and peddlers, well known for their stubbornness, sham charm, and inability to hear the word no. You are immersed in this world as soon as you step off the ferry—you’re offered everything from savory minced lamb, limes, olives, mint tea, and water to carpets (some of which the sellers claim to be "magic" carpets), camel hide leather goods, hookah pipes, pesh, pots and pans, and even camels and dancing girls and boys.

Your task is to go to the Great Library of Tephu, gain access to the archives, and then research what you can. This is likely a lengthy process and could take weeks or longer. As such, you'll need accommodations for the duration of your stay in Tephu.
May 8, 2024 9:37 am
Before gaining passage, Tabat speaks to the ferrymen, seeking a reasonable fare to cross to Tephu. He drums up their competitiveness and requests a reasonable cost on account of their mission on behalf of the city's protection.

After arriving in Tephu and securing accommodations at an inn, you can seek out the city’s Great Library. Overlooking the Plaza of the Bright Horizon in Tephu’s Old City, the library’s outer sanctum is one of Tephu’s most prominent landmarks and can be located with ease.

As you jostle the crowds, constantly waylaid by buskers, barkers, and beggars, you attempt to learn what you can.

The Great Library of Tephu

After selling into quarters and cleaning up, you travel to the your destination in the heart of the old city. Overlooking the Plaza of the Bright Horizon in Tephu’s Old City, the library’s outer sanctum is one of Tephu’s most prominent landmarks and can be located with ease.

Enormous bronze doors, etched with the images of rampant sphinxes, lead into the library’s cavernous interior (A1). The guards seem quite lax, but do keep an eye out for would be thieves.

The high blue dome of Tephu’s Great Library, topped with shining gold pinnacles, towers over the surrounding buildings. Huge columns rise from immense footings along the edifice’s sheer walls.
[ +- ] Library
(A2) A large, ornate desk lit by a magnificent lantern seemingly made of water stands in the center of this entrance hall. Statues of enigmatic sphinxes sit in each corner of the room, their gazes an impossible mixture of pleasure and defiance. Archways in three walls open into larger spaces, the chambers beyond drowning in books, ledgers, librams, scrolls, clay tablets, tomes, and other more obscure forms of record, held in countless shelves and cabinets. The smell of old books is almost overpowering.

The three chambers leading off the foyer form the Great Library’s Outer Stacks (areas A2a and A3). The towering shelves lining these rooms hold a vast repository of knowledge that is but a fraction of that held beyond in the Great Chamber of Knowledge (area A4) and the Upper Stacks (area A6). Entry to the Outer Stacks is free (though a small donation is customary). Entry to the Great Chamber of Knowledge to the north is more controlled, requiring a donation of 50 gp per day of research. Permission to access the library’s greater collections extends only until the library closes at dusk and the research fee must be paid again the next day.

"This place...is impressive," Tabat says, looking around at the stored knowledge visible to him here. He looks for an aide that may assist in locating a section of the library that may house books about the mask and the cult they've been dealing with.
May 20, 2024 3:34 pm
You're cautious about what you tell them, as the Cult of the Forgotten Pharoah may be doing the same as you, trying to find what they can. Still, the assistants you speak to give you the impression that no one here knows where anything really is, not specifically. There is an organization to the library. Unfortunately, what you want in the end is likely going to be tidbits found in unrelated material, and you'll need to research the library the hard way to find references and hints.

Would Iseret's Osrionologist trait be of any use here?
May 21, 2024 9:57 am
"I suppose we need to dig in and start looking through these books," Tabat ventures with a sigh. This was not his strong suit, but he knew a bit about religion and wonders if knowledge therein might help suss out some clues. He pays an assistant for access to the full scope of the library - for himself and his companions - before heading further inside.

There are rules for researching, essentially extended skill checks. Each day of research, you can make a Research* check. The margin of success of your Research roll vs the Library's complexity (target number) achieves knowledge points (kp). Clues are uncovered at milestones of kp.

* Appropriate Research checks are defined by the Library itself. Some Library's grant a bonus to certain checks.

The Outer Sanctum of the Great Library (areas A2 through A6) is a confusing mass of charts, papers, maps, and texts, a vast store of knowledge without much of an index. Your first task should be to try to find some lines of research to follow through the library’s bewildering amount of information.

Yes, these checks can be made untrained, due to the Library's vast resources. However, it looks like Iseret and Jaware alone succeed completely.
After a full days research in the Outer Sanctum, you manage to determine...

Not only does the Outer Sanctum seem to be missing quite a lot of knowledge, but some of the more interesting and secretive works seem to have been deliberately removed.

While the Outer Stacks and Great Chamber of Knowledge contain general information on Osirion’s most famous royal dynasties, information relating to less wellknown dynasties and older families is contained in the Upper Stacks.

A papyrus scroll dating from Osirion’s Second Age over 6,000 years ago references a "lost" pharaoh named Hakotep. The scroll ascribes the epithet of "Sky Pharaoh" to the forgotten ruler, and recounts his ability to "ride the stars by night." The scroll even contains a crude illustration of the Sky Pharaoh, a figure standing upon a dais surrounded by glass and crystal. A researcher who succeeds at a DC 20 Perception check (succeeded) notes that the dais and crystals are f loating, seemingly part of a vast temple that somehow sits in the night sky. With a successful DC 30 Knowledge (arcana) check (Jaware failed), the image can be further interpreted as
Qralloq sent a note to Qralloq
An obscure index compiled by a previous curator of the library lists the scroll referencing Hakotep as one of many that were copied from the personal library of the Sky Pharaoh. This collection of scrolls is held in a part of the Great Library’s Inner Sanctum called the Spiral Archive (area C), described as a chamber resembling a vertical scroll tube crossed by a latticework of papyrus bridges.

May 26, 2024 3:53 pm
You'll need to return the next day, as you've spent the whole day in the Outer Sanctum.

You have learned that the Great Library’s Outer Sanctum holds little of the information you seek, and that to find out more about Hakotep I, you’ll need to gain access to the Inner Sanctum—specifically the Spiral Archive, which will lead to further collections within the Inner Sanctum. However, with access to those collections tightly controlled by the Tephu’s haty-a, Deka An-Keret, so you suspect that you must be particularly cunning to get inside.

You could attempt to break in, or seek out Haty-a Deka An-Keret. You can request an audience with her from the library acolytes.
May 26, 2024 9:01 pm
Tabat approaches one of the acolytes. "My friend, it has become our belief the information we seek may be located within the Inner Sanctum and would like to request an audience with Haty-a Deka An-Keret to appeal for entry. Would it be possible to meet with her tomorrow?"
May 27, 2024 4:39 pm
You are directed to Deaconess Sekek, who politely but flatly refuses the audience. "The haty-a is busy with civic and religious duties and cannot spare time for casual visitors."

After you explain that you need access to the Spiral Archive and Inner Sanctum, she realizes your predicament. "What topics are you researching? Perhaps I can convince her to squeeze you into her schedule."
May 27, 2024 11:29 pm
"We are researching an ancient Osirion ruler, labeled in some texts as the 'Sky Pharoah'," Tabat explains.
May 28, 2024 12:47 am
Deaconess Sekek studies you a moment then nods and says, "Return here tomorrow at dawn, and I'll have her reply. "

There's really not a lot to learn about her, but I'll give you the following:
Deka An-Keret is both the haty-a, or governor, of the city of Tephu, and the high priestess of the city’s largest temple, the Sanctuary of Nethys. She has served in both positions for nearly 20 years, and if not loved by the city’s populace, she is respected for her wisdom, sense of justice, and adherence to the law.

Once they take their leave of the Deaconess, he looks to the others, "Any ideas? Though our cause is noble, I do not wish to flaunt the laws of this city. Perhaps, would you be willing to help me research any potential alternatives to gaining access to the materials we seek? There may be other avenues of gaining such access aside from the explicit permission of the haty-a."

Before Deka can dismiss you, however, a well-dressed slave enters the audience chamber and prostrates herself on the floor in front of the governor, begging to deliver a message. Deka excuses herself and takes the slave to one side to listen to the message.

All but Iseret overhear the whispered conversation. The slave tells the haty-a that she has been sent by Her Excellency Muminofrah of Sothis, who requests the governor’s presence immediately. With a resigned sigh, Deka abruptly ends the meeting with you and exits the room.

The slave remains in the room.

Her Excellency is in Tephu as the personal representative of the Ruby Prince himself."

The slave steps closer, drawn in by Tabat's impeccable manner. "Her Excellency is currently residing at the Palace of Gentle Reeds just outside the Old City. Muminofrah has summoned the haty-a many times since arriving in Tephu, and is likely to continue to do so. Her Excellency speaks for the pharaoh and expects to be obeyed at all times." Tabat glances to the others then back to the slave. "She sounds like a magnificent person. I know you are not a messenger for all, but we are here on an important mission from Wati. I, for one, would greatly appreciate the chance to meet Her Excellency. Is there any sort of process by which we might request an audience?"

Jun 12, 2024 11:28 pm
The servant washes his hands, that is, rubs them in anticipation. "Jewels are never lost on a lady, even one of means." He describes the last successful applicants gift, and Jaware whispers that the approximate worth of the object described is 500 gold.
Jun 13, 2024 6:37 am
Khadi raises an eyebrow, slightky regreeting her latests shopping spree. It may be fun to find that amount quickly, or even at all.
Jun 14, 2024 8:37 am
"Hmm," Tabat intones, "Thank you. We have something to think on, in determining a gift of the proper caliber for Her Excellency."
Jun 14, 2024 11:37 pm
You leave as does the servant and find yourself in private, or as much as you can be in the city streets. The hustle of the streets, traffic moving visually, hawkers offering wares if you have coin, and beggars leaving the shade only when they see a likely mark.

Jaware says, "I have just enough coin left to purchase the gift. Do you think this royal person will be swayed by your charms, Tabat?"
Jun 15, 2024 3:43 am
Tabat sighs, "I can do my best, though I prefer to lead with a rousing call to do the right thing...I get the sense charm may be of more help here. I can chip in for the gift as well. Let's hit the market and see what we can find. I nice ruby may do the trick."

I am sorry I can't help chip in... perhaps if we were to get some money later I can pay you two back...' She gives an apologetic look. I can back you up with the charm though Tabat. Dad used to have me around when he was negotiating with traders for supplies, help with teh sweet talking' She suddenly grins

'Also many may see these as jewels as well.' She taps a bicep. 'Maybe if this is her sort of thing you can flex a bit.' She teases.

Jun 15, 2024 6:11 pm
Iseret pipes up. "I've some money saved up that I can donate to the cause," she offers.
Jun 16, 2024 8:40 am
Tabat almost reactively flexes his arm and laughs, "Maybe, maybe. I'll be happy to have some help in swaying Her Excellency to our cause - your way with words has not been lost on me, Kadi."

"I am unsure, Jaware. It worries me that she shut us down so swiftly after I mentioned the reason for our request, and I can't help but wonder if she has some personal knowledge of the subject. Perhaps it is personal in some way to her."

"Iseret, I trust your keen eye and sharp tongue to help us navigate this market and find something befitting a proper gift. Let's see what we can find."

With Deka An-Keret unwilling to allow them to access the Great Library’s Inner Sanctum, the Destined Drivers seek out the visiting noblewoman Muminofrah of Sothis, the only person in Tephu who can overrule the governor and grant permission to enter the Inner Sanctum. The Palace of Gentle Reeds sits on an estate outside Tephu’s Old City on the banks of Wadjet’s Walk, the canal that flows through the city. The estate and palace are reserved for the use of the pharaoh, or more usually, his official representatives—such as its current resident, Muminofrah of Sothis.

A great palace towers over the canal, fronted with a palisade of beautifully painted pillars in dazzling colors. In front of the palace, moored to a magnificent marble quay, a luxurious river barge wallows in the turbid waters of the canal. Between the barge and the palace, a makeshift camp of colorful tents and stalls has sprung up, creating a small village worth of bustling activity.

With Muminofrah in residence, the palace and its grounds have become the center of a storm of movement and excitement, housing countless traders and petitioners bearing trade goods and gifts for the visiting noblewoman. When on the barge, her privacy is protected from the rabble on shore by hefty, tanned guards wearing heavy armor and carrying scimitars. When you first approach the palace, these guards soon stop you, questioning why they are here.
Jul 28, 2024 2:14 am
You stare at each other for a moment, then Jaware says, "We have an appointment with the noblewoman. And a gift. A rare and expensive gift."

The guards let you pass, and you enter the boat on a wide and sturdy gangway.

A gangplank leads up from the quay to the deck of the pleasure barge. Brightly painted and trimmed with shining gold, the barge’s polished wooden planks gleam in the sun. Toward the stern of the vessel, painted and gilded columns support a silken canopy, shading a pyramid-shaped dais heaped with cushions that rises from the barge’s deck. Sheer curtains between the pillars stir slightly in the weak breeze along the canal.

The barge is inundated with courtiers, guards, slaves, and servants. Wealthy citizens and members of the local aristocracy sit upon cushions on the deck, beneath huge parasols held up by eunuchs. A lion is tethered to each of the four corner pillars, each watched by a guard holding a huge whip. Scantily clad slaves move silently through the gathering, bearing trays and pitchers of refreshments for the guests.

A heavyset woman dressed in revealing silks and wearing a gold headdress lounges atop the pyramid, almost lost in the vast mountain of cushions. This is Her Excellency Muminofrah of Sothis, Fan-Bearer on the Right Side of the King, Muminofrah’s title is that of a high-ranking courtier in the Ruby Prince’s court—one that implies a close personal relationship with the pharaoh and incidentally, places her above Deka An-Keret, a mere haty-a, in the hierarchy of Osirian nobility. Muminofrah has a rather fierce reputation in Tephu, which she has visited on more than one occasion.

Tabat swallows and puts on his best smile for the woman. "Well, it wasn't long ago our group was on business in the Necropolis of Wati. While there are many stories of just that short time, one that comes to mind is of coming across a silver dragon. We were searching for an object that happened to be in its possession and - as I'm sure you know - silver dragons are quite reluctant to give up anything they find precious. We treated with the creature, however, and offered it jewels and gems in exchange, bartering not only for the item, but for our very lives should things have gone wrong. As you can tell by us being graced with your presence this day, we were successful. Though our lives were within its grasp, we appealed to its goodness and the trade was made. The object it provided us, allowed us to end a siege of undead upon the city - something I think we are all proud of here, myself and my friends."

Not entirely unlike the situation we're in now, Tabat thinks.

She nods and gets a little closer to you, enjoying the company of such a seasoned and interesting (and attractive) man.

After some time, much of which no doubt makes Tabat feel somewhat like an object rather than a person, she asks, "You've brought sunshine to my day and I'm feeling magnanimous. What can I do for you?"
Aug 6, 2024 8:24 am
"A boon from Your Excellency? You honor us deeply." Tabat offers her an authentic smile, "We have entreated with Deka An-Keret, begging access to the Great Library's Inner Sanctum. Tabat and her talk for some time, but it isn't clear what her role is in Tephu. She speaks with the voice of the Ruby Prince in many things, but it's possible her trip here is simply one of hedonism.

Before things get a chance to become routine or worse, dull, you sense that you're dismissed (on the promise that you'll return in a few days).

The Spiral Archive
Returning to the Grand Library the following day, you find that word of your 'authorization' has already reached them. Deka AnKeret is apparently in quite a mood but the acolytes open the doors that lead to the Inner Sanctum.

The chief acolyte hands you a sealed letter. "Do not lose this. There are creatures bound to the library to protect it from intruders. They will not attack you if you're bearing this letter, but if you lose it, it will be their duty to stop you. "
Aug 23, 2024 6:05 am
Tabat takes the letter and places it carefully within the folds of his armor, so as to keep it close and safe. "Do you know the contents of the library well? Would you be able to point us to a particular section on a topic?"
Aug 24, 2024 1:54 am
"I'm sorry. It's a big collection and no one has arranged it. You'll need to search out whatever you need the old fashioned way. A thousand apologies, sir."
Aug 24, 2024 2:32 am
"Well, then, we may as well get started," Iseret says with a heavy sigh.
Aug 25, 2024 7:25 am
"A thousand thanks," Tabat grumbles, then looks to Iseret. "I suppose so." His eyes take in the large room and shakes his head at the daunting feat ahead before moving to a nearby shelf and scanning the titles.

The Spiral Archive is located below the Great Library’s Outer Sanctum, past the door of the eye and down the limestone stairs. Unless otherwise noted, ceilings within the Spiral Archive are 10 feet high, and rooms and corridors are lit with regularly spaced continual flames.

You enter the archives, you're on a long tunnel leading ahead then branching to the right. Ahead is a hexagonal chamber, but to the right the passage curves and you can't see much without entering it. Which way do you go?

https://i.imgur.com/KymvATQ.jpeg
Aug 28, 2024 3:08 am
Tabat gestures to the hexagonal chamber, "Let's check there first. We'll probably need to turn this place over quite thoroughly to find what we're looking for, and I don't relish the idea of circling back."
Aug 31, 2024 10:49 am
Khadi nods. 'I agree. One room at a time'
Aug 31, 2024 2:34 pm
The walls of this hexagonal chamber are covered with scribbles carved into the stone. More alarming than that is a large demon!

The creature steps forward, it's body poised for battle. In your mind you hear it's gravely thought-voice. "Intruders. Give me your names and I'll record them here for all of time, on my wall of fallen heroes."

https://i.imgur.com/ti4EgPI.png
Aug 31, 2024 5:43 pm
"Sorry. Wrong turn," Iseret says only half-jokingly, drawing her weapon. "I don't suppose you'll surrender and save us the trouble of adding your name to that list?"
Sep 1, 2024 7:51 am
Tabat pulls the paper from where it is tucked behind his armor and holds it up. "We are not intruders. We are here as invited guests." He holds his breath, hoping the writ they carry is sufficient.
Sep 4, 2024 11:57 pm
The demon growls. "Very well. Don't lose that paper little person." It laughs. "I will write your names anyway. No one will remember you but I. After your body's feed the rats of course."
Sep 5, 2024 6:40 am
"Uh...thanks," Tabat says skeptically. He tucks the paper back behind his armor and nods to the demon before turning back to enter the larger section of the library with the others.

"I better keep this very safe," he says as they walk, tapping a finger against his armor.

Once away, he explains, "Perhaps her offer would have more appeal, if we had not obtained the writ we carry. I am hopeful it will allow us to bypass any of the guardians we come across safely, as we were advised it would. No sense on making a bargain for naught."

You continue on to the center of the Spiral Archive.

The corridor opens into a wide, circular chamber. Instead of a floor, a vast well lined with row upon row of books, scrolls, and parchment plummets downward. Below, flickering flames gently illuminate the chamber in soft light. A flight of narrow stone stairs descends in a spiral along the inner walls of the shaft, which is crisscrossed by a lattice of slender, impossibly thin bridges.
From here, you will need to do research which will involve simple checks. Before we get to that, know that for every check you make, you'll need to make a DC 10 Acrobatics check to cross the narrow leather bridges -- unless you take precautions to eliminate that danger.

Do you, and if so, what are those?
Nov 11, 2024 2:02 am
Iseret considers the thin bridges carefully. "I think I can make it, but I'm not sure about the rest of you."

'Do we have ropes? We can set some upnas a precaution..and I canngo really slowly.
OOC:
would taking 10 be allowed? If so Khadi can manage.
Nov 11, 2024 4:34 pm
"Rope..." Iseret responds quietly. "I knew I was forgetting something."
Nov 11, 2024 5:08 pm
You can't take 10, as there are dangerous consequences for failing (two DC 17 acrobatics checks or fall potentially quite far).

You can crawl carefully, removing the need for a check, but taking a -2 penalty to the research rolls for the day, as it takes much longer to follow the clues you find.

Tabat and Jaware each have 50' of rope. You might be able to fashion a safety line in case you do fall, like a simple loop you could tie around each bridge that you're crossing. A survival check DC 10 would construct that.
Nov 12, 2024 8:06 am
OOC:
As Tabat has a -4 to Acrobatics checks, precautions will be best for him. He has no crafting proficiency. He might need to do the worm to make this survivable.
Tabat looks over the bridges and peers down at the potential fall height. "I don't care much for this. My armor and gear is heavy, and I'm not the nimblest on my feet on the best of days."
Nov 12, 2024 5:09 pm
Jaware scratches his nose, contemplating the strange bridges. "Leaving our armor behind would make that easier. Yet, we are not pressed for time and we've found numerous deadly foes in these archives. Perhaps those of us who are less nimble than dear Iseret," he bows to the rogue, "should proceed with caution?"
Nov 12, 2024 8:54 pm

Research works as follows. You will collectively earn Research Points by making a roll. Each roll represents a days work.

One complication here is that all of the works in the Spiral Archive are written in Ancient Osiriani hieroglyphs. To attempt a Research check in the Spiral Archive, characters who don’t speak Ancient Osiriani must succeed at a DC 30 Linguistics check (DC 20 if a character speaks modern Osiriani) or have magic such as comprehend languages.

Complexity (DC) is 20. Research check: Knowledge (history), Knowledge (nobility), or Knowledge (religion); Knowledge bonus +3, ca

Bards reduce a library’s knowledge points by 1d12 + the character’s Intelligence modifier. Particularly scholastic characters, such as alchemists, wizards reduce a library’s knowledge points by 1d8 + the character’s Intelligence modifier. All other characters reduce a library’s knowledge points by 1d4 + the character’s Intelligence modifier. For every 5 by which a Research check exceeds the library’s Complexity rating, the library’s knowledge points are reduced by 1 additional point. Rolling a natural 20 on a Research check acts like a critical threat. If the researcher confirms the critical hit by succeeding at a second Research check with all the same modifiers (this takes no additional time), the resulting knowledge point reduction is doubled.

Iseret and Jaware speak Ancient Osiriani and so can make the Knowledge checks easily. I'm not certain about Khadi or Tabat.

Lastly, if you're taking the bridges easily to avoid falling, then remember a -2 on the Knowledge checks (not the Linguistics checks).

After a days research, Iseret is the only ones of the crew who had success in the research. She's finds an index catalogs all of the scrolls copied from Hakotep’s library, but the scrolls have clearly been moved or hidden and are not where they are supposed to be.

Eventually you locate the missing scrolls from Hakotep’s library, a huge pile containing several references to the Sky Pharaoh and his participation in some ancient war. The Sky Pharaoh is represented by a very distinct hieroglyph of a winged pyramid. According to the scrolls, the Sky Pharaoh was convinced that an attack was coming from enemies who lived in cities in the clouds, and that he was frantically searching for a weapon to defeat them. Apparently, the pharaoh eventually succeeded in finding this weapon, but all that remains of the scrolls that detail this weapon are a handful of ragged papyrus scraps depicting confusing geometrical patterns. Khadi understands that these scrolls should be here, but have clearly been removed.

At the end of the day, you're all tired from the strange bridges and ready to leave. Do you want to leave, find some magical assistance in deciphering the texts, and return the following day? Or stay all night? Or something else?

A large collection of tablets bound in cloth marked with the Sky Pharaoh’s winged pyramid hieroglyph contains a number of transcribed recollections of several courtiers at Hakotep’s court. These accounts make passing references to the Sky Pharaoh having access to stolen Shory magic.
A dusty, otherwise unremarkable scroll contains a lengthy passage about the burial of Hakotep I, with a passing reference to his tomb having wings. The scroll also contains a tantalizing fragment of the confession of a member of a group called the Sacrosanct Order of the Blue Feather, who claimed that when the Sky Pharaoh was interred, his heart and funerary mask were stolen from his tomb before it was lost to the skies. These two objects supposedly contained the pharaoh’s soul, but his body was left behind in the tomb. This confession was extracted in –1560 ar, some 50 years after the pharaoh’s death. There are also references to considerable efforts by Hakotep’s successor, Pharaoh Djederet II, to round up members of the Sacrosanct Order for questioning. The results of the interrogations were recorded on a collection of scrolls called the Scrolls of Inquiry, but this collection is not held within the Spiral Archive.

Tabat, Khadi, and Iseret identify the Sacrosanct Order of the Blue Feather as a secretive sect of the priesthood of Nethys dedicated to the collection and preservation of knowledge (see the sidebar on page 15 for more details on the order).

"We need to discover where these Scrolls of Inquiry are being held, if they even still exist. Perhaps the location of Pharaoh Djederet II's resting place? And if this mask is one part of the Sky Pharaoh's soul, the other half - his heart - is out there somewhere as well...and the location of the Sky Temple." He takes a breath. "One more day in here? There are still a couple sections of the library I don't think any of us have gone through."

Nov 28, 2024 3:36 pm
With one knowledge point remaining, I won't ask you to roll.

The next day you return, avoiding the guardians and carefully navigating the leather scroll bridges. You find the last information available in the Spiral Archives.

A curator's catalog reveals that the Scrolls of Inquiry were moved to another of the Inner Sanctum's libraries, a library known as the Dark Depository. Unfortunately, your pass from Muminofrah doesn't give you access to that collection, and Deka an-Keret has been reluctant to give you any access at all.
Nov 28, 2024 6:52 pm
'Do we think we can ask Muminofrah for further aid?' She looks to Tabat as she asks. She had seemed taken with him, but she did not want to ask anything of him if he was uncomfortable.[/b]
Nov 29, 2024 9:22 am
Tabat sighs, "I hesitate to wonder what she would expect in return for such a favor...yet, I can try. She did hope that I would visit her again, which is an invitation if ever I've heard one. I could make the request and see how she reacts. Do you think it would be expected to bring another gift?"

Not sure if we have time to do this today still, since there wasn't too much left to research, or if we need to wait until the morning. Either way, Tabat is good to move forward to that scene when the others are.
Dec 1, 2024 5:49 pm
That afternoon as you make your way back to the inn, Iseret and Jaware make eye contact with each other. They've both seen that your party is being followed. Jaware covertly alerts Khadi and Tabat to the woman. She's wearing studded leather, and carries a falchion and crossbow. Al most notable, a funerary mask covers her face.

At this point she's fifty feet behind you on a somewhat crowded street and isn't aware she's been spotted, unless you do something obvious like stare at her.
Dec 4, 2024 7:57 am
As they walk, Tabat lowers his voice while continuing to act casual. "What should we do? Could duck into an alley and wait for her."
Dec 8, 2024 9:33 pm
'That is likely the best plan. If she means us harm she will likely see that as her moment.. if not well we can go from there'
Dec 9, 2024 6:21 pm
Tabat nods and scans the area ahead of their path for an alleyway they might be able to casually turn into.
Dec 10, 2024 12:08 am
Iseret keeps her eyes focused ahead but makes furtive glances to be certain that they are still being followed.
Dec 13, 2024 2:28 pm
You find an alleyway that has a few stalls in it, although substantially less crowded than the street. Turning into it, you find a good ambush spot thirty feet down.

Two or three of you could duck behind a couple of stalls, while Jaware could continue ahead, giving the impression that all of you have gone farther down.
Dec 13, 2024 4:04 pm
Iseret finds cover in a nearby stall, from where she can watch the would-be ambushers.
Dec 14, 2024 2:24 am
Tabat nods at the plan and ducks behind one of the stalls near Iseret and Khadi.
Dec 15, 2024 9:40 pm
Khadi sticks close to Tabat, ducking down near him. If things went wrong she wanted him between her and the danger.
Dec 15, 2024 10:45 pm
