10 AUG 1995

Jun 10, 2019 1:56 pm
Thursday, August 10, 1995. New York City.

Over the course of the day, each of you have been contacted through various means by the Group - at least, that's what you've been calling it. If it has an official name, it remains unknown to you. The means of contact are typical of the Group's methods. An FBI agent receives a phone call from his secretary, indicating a pre-planned meetup with a Mr. Green that didn't previously exist in his calendar. A historian is bumped by a stranger in the street as she rushes to give a presentation, causing her to drop all her papers; when she reaches her destination and begins to sort through them, she finds a note mixed in, marked with a small green triangle. A former military operator has a FedEx envelope returned to him, which appears as if he filled it out himself and sent it to an obviously false address; it's wiped clean of prints, the handwriting is not his own, and a strange invitation is contained within. A British expat hears a knock on his door; answering it, there is a courier with a letter indicating the return of a lost wallet (which is strange, because the Brit's wallet is currently in his back pocket), and a designated meeting time and place.

4:45 p.m. Washington Square Park. Today. No further details listed.

All four of you are savvy enough to pick up on the signals, whether you're a seasoned vet or new member of the conspiracy. K Cell is being activated for a Night at the Opera.

The weather is perfect as you arrive at the designated time and place - 77 degrees Fahrenheit, sunny, with just enough breeze to keep the sweat from collecting. The park is absolutely filled with people, musicians, clowns and jugglers, as well as hundreds of tourists, all getting as much out of the final weeks of summer as they can.
OOC:
I'd like to start with a quick intro for each of your Agents as they arrive at the park. Just a couple sentences, or a short paragraph. Imagine it's a movie, and you each get a little close up. What are the first things a viewer would notice about your Agent, how do they dress, what do they do when they get to the park, etc?
Jun 10, 2019 2:49 pm
Stanton Reed was never late if he could help it, and this meeting was no exception. It was summer, but that was no excuse to dress shabbily. Three years here and Stanton still hadn't gotten used to the casual attire of these Americans. He cut a statuesque figure in his beige linen suit and panama hat, a dignified tourist out for a stroll in the park. He paused at an ice cream stand to pick up a cone, and made his slow way towards the Washington Square park arch and the central fountain; his casual air belied his keen eyes as he moved confidently towards the rendevous point, senses alert for the other cell members and their handler.
Jun 10, 2019 3:18 pm
Dr. MacCaith drives her 1982 Mercedes Benz 380sl coupe like it was stolen. Her black driving gloves fit sleekly, and her round dark blue tinted John Lennon style sunglasses peek out from a mess of red hair. Despite her attempt at looking like a serious driver, traffic grinds to a halt. Rush hour. She slams a hand into the top of her steering wheel impatiently, checking the dash clock against her silver wrist watch. Absently, she snatches a file from the passenger seat and begins reading. A honk tells her to inch ahead.

When she arrives at the park barely on time, she parks crookedly and darts out of the vehicle, walking quickly purposefully to the square. She looks around the fountain and chooses a place to lean. Form fitting tan cloth pants, a white airy blouse tucked in, and a men's tie roguishly loose around her collar, she ties her hair back and surreptitiously looks around, moving only her eyes behind her shades as she looks for the signs.
Jun 10, 2019 3:22 pm
As Reed stands in front of the arch, scanning the crowd for any of his contacts, he hears a voice in his ear, speaking from behind him.

"Washington Square Arch. Dedicated in 1895, modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Financed by New York businessman William Rhinelander Stewart, designed by architect Stanford White. During the excavations for the eastern pier, human remains, a coffin, and a gravestone dated 1803 were uncovered 10 feet below ground level. The sculpture on the western pier is called George Washington as President, Accompanied by Wisdom and Justice. You can see Washington flanked by the figures of Justice on the right and Wisdom on the left. The book that Wisdom is holding is inscribed with the Latin phrase Exitus Acta Probat."

Turning around, you see a thin, greasy looking man with blonde hair and a patchy goatee. He smiles at you as he pulls a pack of Kool cigarettes out, tamps them down in his palm, and then puts one to his lips and lights it.
Jun 10, 2019 3:34 pm
"That means 'the end justifies the deed'. Seems apropos to our line of work, wouldn't you say? What's good, King? I'm Marcus. Glad you could join the tour today. Let's go find the rest of the group."

With that, he turns on his heels and weaves through the crowd without doing much to make sure King is following him.
Jun 10, 2019 3:37 pm
It isn't long before King, following Marcus, sees the familiar face of Agent Kylie come in to focus in the midst of the bustling park.
Jun 10, 2019 3:40 pm
Marcus strides up to her with a grin and calls out as he approaches. "Kylie! Hey! Glad we found you. C'mon, tour's about to start, and we're still waiting on a couple."

He heads back out into the throng of tourists, keeping the two agents closer this time, and speaking now in a hushed tone, though still with a casual, offhanded exterior.

"So, you two have any problems getting here today?"
Jun 10, 2019 3:44 pm
"Whose bright idea was it to meet inside rush hour?" She laughs, in part because so many avoid those perils by using the subway system.
Jun 10, 2019 4:10 pm
Cutting an average figure, at average height and average build, Jack McKinley arrives at Washington Park Square in the average suit of a New York City mid-level executive or other corporate drone. There are probably hundreds of them within a block. Despite his casual strolling pace, he manages to look harried: just a little rumpled around the jacket, a little tired around the eyes, a bit confused, as though he doesn't quite find himself where he expected to be.

He meanders through the crowd with confidence though, eyes up and moving over faces and people with a trained eye. A boy, probably 6 or 7, walks hand-in-hand with his mother nearby and eats on an ice cream cone without getting too much vanilla on his face. Jack's mouth twists in a faint smile as the boy looks up at him, and he gives the kid a quick wink before he continues through the crowd toward the famous Arch.
Jun 10, 2019 4:12 pm
Marcus chuckles and nods, taking a drag on his cigarette.

"Wish I knew. Someone with a higher security clearance than me, I can tell you that much. Unfortunately, the shit we're dealing with don't got no respect for peak-hour MTA traffic."

Suddenly, his eyes light up and he beelines through the crowd, leading the two agents with him straight to their colleague, Agent Karl.

His eyes flit across the crowd, and he speaks in a louder, more performatively public voice.

"There you are, Karl. I’m Marcus. We've been looking for you. You know, the area that Washington Square Park sits on was originally granted to freed Angolan slaves to settle on? The Dutch gave it to 'em 'cause they wanted, like, a buffer zone between them and the natives. Savages, and all. But that's not even the most fucked up thing. Not only did the freemen have to pay a cut of what they made to the Dutch to keep using their land, their children were born as slaves, even though the parents were technically free. Can you believe that shit, man?"

He shakes his head, eyes wide with incredulity at this historical tidbit. Then his demeanor collapses back into secrecy and he speaks again in a low voice.

"But seriously. Didn't have any issues? No one followed you here or anything?"
Jun 10, 2019 4:38 pm
Jack nods once. "Marcus," he acknowledges. "If they did, they're good. I got lost seven times on the way here. I hate New York." His unmistakable Chicago accent betrays his Large American City allegiance.
Jun 10, 2019 5:32 pm
Marcus nods, and blows a waft of menthol smoke right in Karl’s face, before flicking the filter to the ground, and immediately lighting another. As he reaches under his coat for his cigarettes, all three agents notice a wear in his belt from where some sort of badge or ID would likely sit.
Santouche sent a note to 78RPMLife
"Seven times? Damn, man. You should try walking. That's what I do. Streets are numbered and shit."

He never maintains eye contact with you for more than a few split seconds at a time, constantly returning his attention to the crowd. He suddenly moves about 10 or 12 feet, gesturing for the group to follow, for no clear reason.

"Now where the fuck is Kirby?"
Jun 10, 2019 11:20 pm
"I've always figured there were secrets buried under that arch. That's what monuments are for, to hide things." Reed followed Marcus as he led the way to their destination. He nodded at agents Kylie and Karl, as they joined up. Now they were a little more conspicuous, and Reed picked up the anxiety in Marcus' question about being followed, and his last darting movement. Reed instinctively scanned the crowd.

Sebastian arrives early getting a seat on the bench with his newspaper.
Rubbing his hands on the denim jeans and fiddling with the buttons on his newly acquired Yankees button up. Every few minutes he would flip the page. Not even reading it, instead looking over the crowd with what seems to be never blinking eyes. He pulls his ball cap down to help his eyes from the suns rays.. Glancing at his watch he notices it's about the time for the meeting.

As he stands, a small jingle could be heard. Adjusting his belt he folds the newspaper as he continuously scans the crowd for any that would wish to tail his teammates. Brushing his dirty blond hair he makes his way for the arc, where he last saw agent king and a strange man.

Marcus smiles and gestures with his head. "There he is," he says to the three agents standing around him as Kirby approaches, newspaper folded under his arm.

"Alright, you made it. Good. Let's walk and talk. There's not much to say, and we've already been standing around together for too long." He stuffs hishands into his pockets as he hustles around the park, winding an indeterminate and circuitous path across the walkways.

"You've all been been granted official FBI clearance to assist in the collection and typing of evidence from a location of interest in an interstate missing persons case. Missing Person is Abigail Wright, 27 year old Caucausian female. Her dad reported her missing a couple months ago, and I guess they found some freaky-ass shit in her apartment. NYPD and FBI have both investigated and hit dead ends. FBI investigation is technically still ongoing, but stalled. A Friendly with the New York FBI contacted me a few days ago about a symbol she saw in photographs of the apartment which is associated with 'demonology and the occult'", he says, putting air quotes around the final phrase.

"I ran it up to leadership, and they determined it warrants investigation. We need you to get in there and do your jobs. Figure out if there's anything unnatural behind her disappearance. If there is, stop it."

He reaches into his jacket (which he is wearing, in spite of the summer weather) and pulls out a sealed manila envelope and a flip phone. He shoves them both into Karl's arms.

"The police and FBI files are in there. They have more information on the case than I do. You also have your IDs, keys to the apartment, and a couple other goodies. If you need to contact me, use the phone. Number's in there."

Without so much as a goodbye, he turns and starts to leave, before wheeling around for a final thought.

"But, like, try not to call me. You know?"

With that, he lights up another cigarette, gives you a nod, and walks off, allowing himself to be swallowed up by the crowd.

Your watches show 4:51. The whole meetup barely lasted 5 minutes, front to back.

You've received your briefing. What do you do next?
Jun 11, 2019 8:42 pm
"Well." Agent Kirby says firmly looking at the envelope. His face still pretty stoic. He fumes the illusion of the strong silent type.
Jun 11, 2019 11:55 pm
"Never going to get used to that," Jack/Karl says under his breath. "Anybody know a good place nearby to sit down and look this stuff over in private?"

He looks from face to face, already weighing features and expressions. It seems an unconscious sort of habit, something he falls into by default.

"There's a Jewish deli just up the way with a space. Good place to study when I was working on my master's thesis." Kylie desperately wants to hold the folder, but says nothing. Instead she puts her hand behind her back. "Good?"
Jun 12, 2019 1:31 am
"Missing person? I'm not entirely sure why I'm needed. Freaky ass shit, on the other hand, is just my cuppa. The accent was almost American Bostonian, until you realise that it is actually nativised British. But let's have a look at the case file when we sit down. Reed smiled at agent Kylie to lead the way. " Three years here and I don't think I've tried everything in a Jewish deli yet.

Kylie leads the way up to Sammy's Deli, an old school kosher joint a few blocks away in the East Village, near the border of Gramercy. The restaurant is quite full, mostly with tourists, it seems - you hear a bevy of languages being thrown around, and it looks as if there's at least one school group (probably from the midwest, if you had to guess) occupying a long banquet table in the center of the room.

You take your tickets, order at the counter, and carry your food on trays while you scan the room for a seat. You're able to secure a booth in a corner. Not the most discreet place you've ever pored over top secret information, but what the venue lacks in privacy, it makes up for in stimulus and distraction. No one seems to notice or pay any attention to you as you take your seats.
OOC:
What do you do next?
Jun 12, 2019 3:05 pm
The crowd in the deli provided a cover of anonymity, of sorts. Reed kept one eye on the surroundings, and casually checked out the people in the booth behind theirs, before settling into his seat, and waited for Karl to hand over the documents. He was a practical man, and scanning the dossier quickly before passing them on to one of the others. He much preferred to be at the scene itself to investigate things better.

"I'm afraid I can't tell what is out of the ordinary from these, apart from the fact that she had interesting ideas about interior decoration. Perhaps better heads than mine can glean more. When we're ready, I suggest we head out to her apartment. But no hurry, I've barely started on this, this matzo ball." He held up a spoonful of the dish and eyed it intently.

To be clear, the photos of Wright’s apartment that Marcus referenced are not included with the dossier. There’s a single photo - Abigail’s "selfie". The NYPD and FBI files are written reports.
Jun 12, 2019 3:35 pm
OOC:
Ah I see. Yeah I picked up what Marcus referenced. Post edited for clarity.
Jun 12, 2019 3:59 pm
OOC:
No worries, happy to clarify. Wasn't unfair for you to assume that the photos would be included with the case files. For whatever reason though, whether deliberately or through clerical error, they didn't make it into the dossier.
Jun 12, 2019 4:17 pm
Karl nods, though a bit absently. He's skimmed the dossier's contents already, and made the necessary motions to look to potential observers that he's interested in his sandwich, but for the most part he's keeping an eye on the room for signs of trouble.

"Apartment seems the logical place to start," he agrees, glancing back to the others at the table. He looks across at Kylie then. "Any of the references in here," he asks, gesturing to the case file, "spark anything for you? Seems more like your area of expertise than mine."
Jun 12, 2019 5:06 pm
When ordering his food Kirby showed a bit of straight to the point, no umm.. or ahhs..

He quickly starts in on his sandwich keeping an attentive ear out around him. Between bites he casually eyes the crowd of patrons at the establishment.
Finishing the better half of his sammich he cleans up the crumbs around him. "How far is the place from here?"
Jun 12, 2019 5:20 pm
OOC:
The address given for the Macallistar Building is 210 East 32nd Street, so not too far. You're currently at about 8th and 4th Ave. It'd be about a 30 min walk, and about half that on the 4/5/6.
Jun 13, 2019 3:05 am
After her turn at the file, Kylie goes through it quickly cataloging the information, then going through it again parsing the details. "I need to see the original source material, of course, to determine a probability of actual phenomena. This synopsis is incomplete and compiled by untrained eyes. The apartment may work well, if it hasn't been ransacked by goons. "

A no nonsense bunch. Reed agreed with the need to head out, and finished up his meal.
OOC:
let's go
Jun 15, 2019 11:27 am
You finish your meals, take your tickets, and pay with cash at the door before you leave (in classic NY deli style, they only take cash), and hop in your cars to head to the Macallistar building. The drive is just a straight shot up 3rd Ave, but what would normally take 6 or 7 minutes winds up being more than a 20 minute drive in the rush hour traffic. You finally reach your destination just shy of 6 pm.

The building is a classic three-story brownstone structure with a faux-castle design located at 210 East 32nd Street near 2nd Avenue in the Rose Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. A fake portcullis hangs above the large double doors, artificial ramparts encircle the windows and ledges, and cheap concrete gargoyles watch from the rooftop.

You arrive to find a black Ford Taurus with an NYPD license plate parked outside, the form of a single occupant visible in the driver's seat.
Jun 15, 2019 12:28 pm
Reed glanced at Karl, whom he had always assumed had some sort of FBI background. "Your call, this one. They can't still be watching the place." And nodded in the direction of the NYPD car.
Jun 15, 2019 9:12 pm
"Yeah, I’ll go have a chat with them. Keep low for a minute, yeah?"

Karl exits the car some distance up the street from the NYPD vehicle, straightens his jacket, and approaches the car from an angle that will make him easily visible to the occupant. No surprises here. He walks calmly, as though he’s simply out for a stroll.

He comes up beside the driver’s side door. "Evening," he says companionably, then leans over to take a look inside.

Suppose I oughta re-iterate this point for the whole group, instead of just in a note to 78rpm:

Keep in mind that you all have official FBI covers for your assignment, which means you're operating legitimately, though your goals are different from the FBI's. You have a fake ID and a legend that can stand up to immediate scrutiny, though obviously any serious investigation into your covers will pose problems fast. Point is, the actual FBI and NYPD know you're working here, and you have an official excuse to flash badges and get answers in regards to the Wright case. Just hope no one writes those badge numbers down and runs them up the chain of command...

Kylie follows King, trying to look nonchalant and not all career G-men like these guys.
Jun 19, 2019 3:48 am
The man introduces himself to the group as Detective Graham Giuradanda, lead detective on the NYPD's investigation into Wright's disappearance, as he follows the agents to the front door of the Macallistar building. To the left of the main door is a smaller door down a few steps, presumably to a basement of some sort. There's a buzzer outside the front doors that looks like it was installed in the 60s.

Through the front door is a foyer - a small marble-floored room with the tenants’ mailboxes, numbered to correspond to the relevant apartment. The area is messy with old newspapers, sale circulars, and pizza coupons strewn about and stuffed into mailboxes. Beyond the foyer, a single hallway runs the length of the building, carpeted in plush burgundy, with two apartments on each side. A staircase runs up and down at the midpoint of the hall.
Jun 19, 2019 3:52 am
"Abigail's apartment is the first on your left, number 1A," Giuradanda pipes up from behind the agents.
Jun 19, 2019 4:10 am
"Thanks Detective." King nodded again, but hung back half a step as they entered the hallway to look into the mailbox numbered 1A, flicking past the junk mail to see if there was anything noteworthy.

Agent Kylie steps to the side of the door. She looks at the others and then reaches for the handle, waiting until they're in position. She mouths the words, "One, Two, ...." and tries the knob.
Jun 19, 2019 5:27 am
Karl nods to the Detective, offering a grateful half-smile. He's been on that side of this situation before. Coming up beside the door, he gestures to Kylie to go ahead and open it.
Jun 19, 2019 2:13 pm
The apartment door is locked, but the key from the dossier fits right in and opens it with an easy "click". The door swings open into a linoleum floored kitchenette. In the kitchen, a few feet from the door, sits a claw-foot bathtub. Immediately to your right, just before the bathtub, is a door that opens up into a tiny bathroom with an old-fashioned hammered-tin ceiling, barely large enough to fit the small sink and toilet within. On the floor in the middle of the room sits a cardboard box marked "EVIDENCE, FBI WHITE PLAINS, WRIGHT-A, 10-AUG-95." The apartment seems quite large, at least by New York standards - the kitchen opens up into an airy main living area. There's a small bedroom separated from the living room, and two spacious closets, one off of the kitchen and one off of the living room.

The details of the architecture are overshadowed, however, by the scene you open up the door to find.

The floor is bare. The rug in the living and bed rooms has been ripped up and taken away, exposing a battered and stained linoleum surface. There is no furniture to be found. The walls and ceiling are covered in layers of materials: papers, small items, and larger things epoxied in a bizarre and seemingly meaningful pattern of strata. It appears mostly untouched by police, save for three radios — a transistor radio, a small tape player, and a CD walkman — which have apparently been wrenched from the wall, one leaving behind a chunk of plastic from its casing.

The whole apartment appears to be a testament to methodical madness. The Agents will certainly have their work cut out for them.
Jun 19, 2019 2:16 pm
Giuradanda hangs back by the door, following you a few feet into the kitchen and lingering around the entrance. He observes you taking everything in.

"Pretty freaky, huh?" he asks with his eyebrows raised. "I mean, I been with the force for almost 20 years now, never seen anything like this shit."
Jun 19, 2019 3:47 pm
Kirby will scope the outside of the building, eventually checking out front & back. Checking entry points and exit points, fire escapes, garbage bins etc..
Jun 19, 2019 3:48 pm
Kylie maintains her dignity, but inward her mind is already trying to mind map and catalog the material. "This looks my apartment when I was writing my dissertation. Well, except I was organized. This is a lot to digest."
Jun 19, 2019 4:06 pm
Karl stands next to the detective, hands on hips as he takes in the scene. "And my ex says I’m a mess..." he says under his breath. "What’s with the radios?" he asks, "Is there a reason they’ve been moved?"
Jun 20, 2019 3:20 am
King didn't see anything of note in the mailbox, but the sight that greeted him through the open door more than made up for it."I was at the Vatican some time back. Reminds me of the Sistine Chapel, but postmodern." The scene was, disturbing. He walked straight into what he judged was the centre of the room, looked for signs of heavier wear and tear on the floorboards there, and, unexpectedly, lay down on the floor and looked up at the ceiling. "Everything's reversed. Let's have a look the other way round."

"And so it begins." King did not stir from his position on the floor when Karl turned on the radio, but his ears pricked up at the lyrics. "Someone talking to us." His hand instinctively patted the sidearm under his jacket.

"So much for that." King got up and dusted the floor grime off himself. He couldn't make much of the random collection of material above him, but perhaps they were kept off the floor because there was something on or below it. King turned his attention to the linoleum, to see if there was anything on it, or if it hid something underneath.

King walked back into the living room as Kylie showed them the script. "You mean to say all the mounted junk pointed to this? Part of a larger play?" King wasn't familiar with the material.

King looked at the items on the wall again. Prosthetic limbs as well? Perhaps they all pointed in some direction.

To be clear, there's no couch. No furniture. Literally nothing on the floor in the entire apartment, save for the furnishings like the bath and toilet that literally can't be wrenched up. Every object that is present in the apartment, aside from the cardboard box left by the police for you guys and the radio, tape player, and Walkman that Karl looked at earlier, is adhered to the walls and ceiling.

This doesn't significantly affect anything that's happened yet, but just want to make sure you really understand what you're all looking at here.

EDIT: Going to wait for King and Kirby to finish up in the vestibule and decide what their course of action is before I dive in to any of these search rolls.

I'll give King the extra Search roll for his critical success now. Edit That'll be a 17/20! Another success. Lucky lucky.

Sorry, I’m realizing there’s some confusion with the floor naming convention I’m using. Abigail’s apt is on the ground floor. The second and third stories I’m referring to as the first and second floors, respectively. The building’s exterior makes it clear it is 3 stories tall. Unclear at this point where the roof is accessed from. The fire escape runs to the first floor windows and then have drop-ladders down to the ground, so no, Cave, there’s no fire escape leading down from the windows in abigail’s apt.

"You spoke to all the tenants Kirby? Got a list of their names? Anything of note?" King would've wanted to take a break from the cataloguing to speak to the residents, but it seemed that Kirby already had it covered.
Jul 17, 2019 7:15 pm
"Only a few," he pulls out his note book and golf pencil. " The one over here." He points in the direction without looking up. "Must have tried to get to know her know her... She used an alias 'Laura'. As for the Neighbor across the way. Didn't really talk to her. It seems the Turnaround in a place like this is quite frequent. The part that strikes me as odd is that noone seems to check their mail or newspapers..."
Jul 18, 2019 12:21 am
"I noticed that too at the lobby, with all the uncollected mail I assumed it was a largely unoccupied building at first. So there are residents..."
Jul 18, 2019 3:49 pm
"Theres a few, Named mail boxes and such but I just heard footsteps. Sounded like someone from upstairs but I didn't see them pass by the door here." Kirby looks again thru the looking glass. "The 2 that I spoke with seemed to not know what happend or whats going on."

After a few more moments looking thru the peep hole Kirby heads back to the room.
Jul 19, 2019 1:53 pm
OOC:
What’s everyone doing? Discussing your findings? Following the person going up? Going back to the other tenants? Another Search? I’ve been sort of stalling til 78’s back anyway, but lmk what you all wanna do.
Jul 19, 2019 2:02 pm
"You didn't see anyone pass by?" King wondered. "Maybe we should look at the list of tenants you made, tally that against the mailbox labels, and check that with anything we catalogue in here." King was contemplating going back out to the lobby to check the mailbox names, if Kirby hadn't done so already.
OOC:
GM, Do we have that info, names and their respective apartments?
Jul 19, 2019 2:06 pm
Kylie stares at the ticket she found, wondering who the person was, and why it was important. She tags it, notes it in her growing catalog, and moves on. Goosebumps rise on her skin at the mention of not checking the mail. "No one checks their mail? Do you think that the weirdness could be due to the building, or the building just has attracted weird people?"
Jul 19, 2019 2:37 pm
OOC:
You have what was on the mailboxes, sorry if that slipped through the cracks earlier, reposted here for convenience. Kirby talked to the tenants in 2B and 3A. IDs still unconfirmed, Kirby didn't ask for any names.

OOC:
"My bad entirely, sorry. I realised I had asked you the same question when King checked the mailboxes when he entered. Gonna stick it in the log so I'll remember.
Jul 19, 2019 2:58 pm
"Here's what's weird. Do you still have the one page script? You noted that Abigail's name was mentioned in it?" King began to note the connection. "Look at the other names mentioned. They correspond to the names of the tenants." He waited for Kylie to verify what he just deduced.
Jul 19, 2019 3:34 pm
"Uhhh, the script has, let's see, Roger, Louis, Abigail... and Michelle. Do we have a list of the tenants?"
Jul 19, 2019 3:44 pm
"Exact same names on the mailboxes."
Jul 19, 2019 3:51 pm
"Bad form using real names. You're supposed to change that stuff when writing fiction. Assuming it is fiction, I suppose."
Jul 19, 2019 10:39 pm
"Whats the rest of that script say?"
Jul 19, 2019 11:15 pm
She finds out tacked to the wall and shows it to him.
[ +- ] script
Jul 20, 2019 2:17 am
"Assume for a moment it isn't a script, but a real account. The tenants are all reading something, which they pass to each other. Let's look for things that can be read, a book, a manuscript, notes."
Jul 20, 2019 3:15 pm
"Perhaps someone should seek this Michelle."
Jul 20, 2019 10:14 pm
Karl rolls his shoulders to loosen the tension that's growing there. "There's also this... a map, it seems like." He spreads it out on a convenient surface. "We might check out some of the spots that are marked here, since it seems to correspond to the building fairly well."
OOC:
Posted the description of the map in the Agent's Log thread.
Jul 21, 2019 1:34 am
King nodded to Kirby. "Yes let's check on this Michelle. I'll come with you."

But before that, King examined the map that Karl laid out, his years of intelligence analysis coming in handy. "This unit, Abigail's is 1A. The receipt you found says she paid rent for 10B, which is unoccupied, according to the mailboxes. We should check that apartment too."
OOC:
A point of confusion for me, so I didn't want to ponder it in character: the map description 78 posted describes a third floor. Santouche, in your clarification post earlier you said it was obvious it was a three storey building, and the floors are described as ground, first and second. Am I over-reading a clue, or am I misunderstanding the labels for the floors?
Minor question: does the map contain apartment numbers? Or does Kirby know already how the apartments are numbered?
Jul 21, 2019 2:41 pm
OOC:
The floor labels are correct. ‘3rd floor landing’ is the the top of the stairs, with a door presumably leading out to the roof. It’s not a floor proper, just a landing - no apts or anything, at least according to the map. The apts are unlabelled on the map, but Kirby knows the numbering for the ground and 1st floors and could probably surmise the 2nd floor layout as well.
Jul 22, 2019 4:56 pm
"Right." Kirby takes to looking at the map also.
Jul 22, 2019 5:23 pm
OOC:
Cool so who's going where?
Jul 22, 2019 5:26 pm
Karl looks to Kirby and King. "You two want to check out the map while we keep searching?" he asks, gesturing to Kylie. "Or do you think we should try and stay together?"

He rubs at his cheek, tiredness starting to creep in to his eyes. "Gotta admit, this place is giving me the serious creeps, but... gotta be catalogued, right?"

Karl suddenly snaps his fingers. "Hang on a second..."

He reaches to a small pile of items nearby and grabs a yellowed slip of paper. "Place is doing things to my head. Check this out. Receipt's made out to Abigail, but it's for Apartment 10B, not 1A. And I can't tell who actually signed it. It's from July, but something's been done to the paper. Looks way older, don't you think?"

Karl hands the receipt out to anyone who wants to take a closer look. "Abigail went missing in June." He turns to Kirby then, "You've been around the building a little... is there an apartment 10B?"
Jul 22, 2019 10:57 pm
"I haven't seen one but I only went 1 up from here. I assume there is one. It on the mailbox listings."
Jul 23, 2019 2:09 am
"Right. Let's physically verify all the apartment numbers and see that they tally with the mailboxes, and we can put those numbers down on the map." King got ready to exit the room with Kirby.
Jul 23, 2019 4:33 pm
Kirby straightens out his yankees jersey. "Ok". Kirby bends down and reties his shoes and makes sure his weapon is ready. "Ready".
Jul 24, 2019 1:24 am
King patted his sidearm under his breast pocket as well. "Just a sweep of each floor then. And check for occupants." With that he opened the door and stepped out into the main hallway, relying on Kirby to point out which ground floor units he had already checked on.
Jul 24, 2019 9:24 pm
The agents head to the next floor. "I already spoken with the 2 on the main floor. There are a few up here."
Jul 24, 2019 9:26 pm
Kirby goes up to the next room listed via the mailling list and raps on the door.
Jul 25, 2019 12:25 am
She shrugs. "Id rather learn what we can before we confront the neighbors, but your training is better than mine."
Jul 25, 2019 2:36 pm
"Please do keep at it. I figure we'll be able to bring back some new information to correlate with what we might still find here. We'll be back quick to continue the cataloguing work." King assured Karl and Kylie before exiting the room.

The last thing King said he was going to do after checking on the apartments was to return to the room to resume his search. So presumably what's next for him is another hour of search (and the corresponding die roll).
Sep 15, 2019 4:48 am
Kylie will simply acknowledge the other two agents as they reenter, rub the back of her neck to get rid of the heebie jeebies, and continue her research.

"We managed to speak with Louis Post, but can't find Michelle Vanfitz. And Kirby here already spoke with Roger Carun. Louis started acting weirdly when we asked him about the script for the play. He says he read it, then passed it to Roger." King reported to Karl and Kylie.

Kylie looks at the ceiling. "Did any of you get the sense that someone was watching you, like, really close?"
Sep 16, 2019 1:28 pm
"When speaking to Louis, we had the sense that he was looking at something or someone, but there was no one in the direction of whatever he was looking at." King pondered. "I think we can safely conclude there's something else going on in this building. It's just we can't see it or detect it yet."
Sep 16, 2019 9:44 pm
Karl looks over at Kylie, eyes narrowed slightly. "You too? Son of a... I thought it was just me," he says. It's not clear whether he's relieved, irritated or afraid. Turning to King, he says, "Maybe we can't... but I swear that something can see us..."
Sep 16, 2019 11:10 pm
"It's all good. If we die here it appears that there may be life after death, so how bad can it be?" She shakes her hair and rubs her neck again, having only creeped herself out more despite the attempt at levity.

"It's too late tonight, but I want to run background checks on all the tenants tomorrow. Also do some good old-fashioned legwork around the neighbourhood, see whether they've been behaving strangely."
Sep 17, 2019 11:55 pm
"Think we can finish up and get out before whatever it is shows up" Kirby says in a semi mocking way.
Sep 18, 2019 2:14 am
"Still tons to unglue. It'll take the whole night." King shrugged. "And since Kirby and I ducked out but found no big leads in the first and second floors, nothing's really happening outside either. Although we haven't looked at the third floor..."

What do you do? If everyone wants to keep searching for the rest of the night, I'm happy to just resolve it - frankly, you've already pulled most of the clues that are included in Abigail's apartment (though there are still a few more). Well, I'm not gonna just declare that per-se. Assuming you commit to staying in the apartment for the rest of the night, there are a few things we'll need to cover before we get to the end, but I'm happy to do it montage style rather than each hour on its own if that's the case.

Yep, roll against current. Your max sanity is always 99 minus your Unnatural score. Your starting sanity is always lower than that, and it's possible to go above your starting sanity up to your current max. As you understand more about the true nature of the universe (represented by Unnatural), your capability to function in normal society decreases (represented by max sanity). However, you always roll against your current sanity.

Karl rubs at his neck. The searching and the constant prickling at the back of his neck as if he's being watched is starting to wear on him, that much is clear. "When I get home, I swear, I'm throwing out 95% of the shit cluttering my apartment. No one is ever going to have to dig through this much nonsense when I up and go missing someday," he grumbles.

"A great king of what, now?" echoes Karl.
Sep 23, 2019 8:44 pm
She fingers the image. "He could really help us. Her is typically depicted as being served and obeyed by twenty-two legions of demons. He knows of hidden things, can find treasures, and tells past, present, and future. Taking a human or aerial body, he answers truly of all secret and divine things of Earth and the creation of the world at the behest of Bael (the first and principal king of Hell)." She grows quieter. "He's exactly who we need."
Sep 23, 2019 8:55 pm
Peering over Kylie's shoulder, Karl and King see what she's staring at. A scrap of old, torn, linen parchment tacked to the wall, with a strange symbol scrawled on it in gold ink:
[ +- ] The Sigil
Her fingers trace at the edges of the scrap as it awaits someone to pluck it down from the wall and add it to growing catalog of miscellany.
Sep 23, 2019 9:16 pm
"Uh huh. Because my life ain't complicated enough without making deals with the devil," says Karl skeptically, looking from the sigil to Kylie and back. "Or kings of hell, whether they're principal or just, you know... flunkies."

He holds up his hands as if surrendering.

"Hey, look... I totally agree there is some weeeeiiiiird shit going on here. But now we're talking about not just weird but completely looney tunes. I get that our girl was almost certainly into some serious occult stuff, but... that's one hell of a leap you're taking."

He pauses a moment. "No pun intended."
Sep 24, 2019 2:02 am
King walked over to Kylie at her last words. Her words seemed a bit off, what with her talk about needing the king of hell. King stood in front of her, breaking her line of sight to the strange sigil on the wall, and paused there, his own back facing the wall. "Take a deep breath. Clear what's in your head. Now explain again what we ought to be concerned about."

She shakes her head and takes a deep breath. So close, I can feel, something.

"Hey, I'm just saying this is a legit symbol. It isn't a random doodle. If she is looking for secrets, then this would be like, the patron anti-saint of finding shit out." She waves her hand about the room. "We've all felt the creepiness. Maybe this is an art nouveau project and we're aficionados, impromptu fans even. Or maybe, I don't know. I think I'm close to understanding, but the big picture is still missing."
Sep 24, 2019 2:33 am
King nodded. "Right, so someone's majorly dabbling in the occult, in a legit way. And we can definitely pick up the vibes here, as well as with the tenants and the building itself. You're right, we need some breakthrough evidence, something that allows us insight."
Sep 24, 2019 3:27 pm
"What would happened if we cut the symbol? Would that loosen its grasp of whatever your talking about?
Sep 24, 2019 4:01 pm
At Kylie's explanation, and King's response, Karl's already looking out over the apartment again, rubbing at his temples briefly as though trying to massage fresh insight into his tired head.

As Kirby adds his thoughts, Karl looks up to see what Kylie has to say about this idea. There's a skeptical cast to his expression, but he doesn't voice any disagreement.
Sep 24, 2019 5:45 pm
She looks aghast. "Destroying evidence? I thought you sort were law enforcement?"
Sep 24, 2019 6:32 pm
"More like Security. But you're saying that you feel something, Maybe this is it. So if its destroyed you shouldn't it feel less?
Sep 24, 2019 6:49 pm
"This? This is linen cloth, it isn't the Shroud of Turin." She pulls it off the pin, and hands it to him. "Take a picture before you burn it, if you feel you need to get rid of it."
Sep 24, 2019 6:54 pm
The moment that Kylie pulls the scrap of linen off the pin, the apartment is pierced by a blasting cacophony of sound from the street outside the apartment window, as if someone was leaning into their car horn as they passed by. It's sudden and shocking enough to make all the Agents start.

After a few moments to catch his breath and calm his pounding heart, he says, "You don't hear it? The voices? They're laughing... or crying. You know how it's kinda hard to tell the difference sometimes, if you can't hear it very well?"

He looks, of all places, at the wall the door is in. "I thought they were coming from out here, but..." he gestures -- a little wildly -- at the complete lack of voiceless entities present in the hall. "Nothing here! I can still hear them though."

He puts a hand on the wall in question, then slaps his open palm against it, hard.

"That's now, surely! Listen, the dog just barked!" King moved nearer the main door and listened next for loud footsteps on the staircase. "That's our cue. But there's no fourth floor. At least, not that we know of."

"Well we didn't fully explore the upper floors. Let's get to it King."

Kirby removes his hand from the wall and checks his weapon as he makes his way to the door. Straightening his jersey shirt he opens the door.

"Perhaps more will reveal itself?"

Kylie looks about the room, and says, "We're about done here, let's all go."

And with that, we're fully into the next day.

One thing before I lock this thread up - going to introduce a couple of new mechanics here.

[ +- ] Bonds
Let me know if you have any questions about these rules. Once everyone rolls 1D6 (or alternately, gets to drinking coffee, smoking, or rustling up some cocaine to stave off the effects of exhaustion...), I'll lock this thread and open a new one.

Kylie feels tired, but is determined to not let this mystery lie still.

Rolls

Willpower exhaustion damage - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Karl nods, agreeing with Kylie's assessment for everyone to go, no matter how bizarre that script is -- or probably because of it.

Rolls

Willpower loss due to exhaustion - (1d6)

(6) = 6

Kirby will hold the door open for the other agents if they are leaving. "Perhaps one or two of us should stay behind incase something happens in here.

Rolls

- wp - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Don't worry about leaving people behind. I mean, you can if you really want to, but I'd rather keep everyone involved. Happy to let you install a camera or something somewhere to record the room while you're out of it, if that would give you the justification for everyone to stick together for now.

I don't want to discourage splitting up in the long term, but I do want to try to mitigate uneven participation opportunities.

King was down to his last two Silk Cuts. He needed a new pack soon, when the shops open. One last check, then off to bed. "I suggest we check on this one, then call it a day. Crash for a bit, meet back here later?"
OOC:
I've occasionally posted King smoking throughout. So offset for a while longer? I'll roll the d6 anyway, whether for offset or for WP loss

Rolls

Exhaustion - (1d6)

(3) = 3

OOC:
Sure, smoke away. 3 more hours before you crash, King.
