"Erathnir, we're not that young... how many lives do you think were lost in the Dark Era where dark magic was rampant. Just to get where the world is now and it's honestly still shite, your heart might seem like it's in the right place but let me ask you who would you sacrifice to this ritual. They don't right this wrong but only delay this corruption for a short time. Till the next ritual we buy time? Do you think the people knowingly or unknowingly worshipping a Dark God will be given a pass for not knowing? We can't walk away you konw that since regardless we and our employeer will be held accountable for your actions however noble or singular you might think them. Tronus states rubbing his forehead with wrist of his shield arm.

"You're the smart one figure out how we do something to ebb this without doing Dark Magic." Tronus advises

"This kind of magic is powerful and complex, unpicking it without consequences will most likely be impossible but researching it may take months. We simply do not have the time....." he says sadly as he draws his wand to his hand and looks to the villagers nearby "Well? This is your village, your lives here. What say you? Do you still want to press on with this ritual knowing that you are worshiping a dark power? Knowing the price you are all paying every time you do this?"

Filled with an over-abundance of primal energies, and his quick temper, Bruv moves forward with the only plan he could think of to try to stop a sacrifice.

Hoping that it was just their ability to separate themselves from the act that was allowing his allies to believe this was okay, Bruv aims to force their hand. Hoping that neither Hildar nor Nekurr would actually make a sacrifice to a dark god with their own heart and mind and body in on the deed, he starts to render those who might be willing or even know how to conduct the ritual unconscious, beginning with Vanya Tabbins whom he had urged to leave twice now.

He sends an empowered blast of concussive air into her and any cultists nearby sending them sprawling.

Then he looks to the elven investigator, "If your heart is set on honoring and empowering this dark god, Hildar, you're gonna have to send that witches soul to it yerself."

Still unsure how to handle the situation, Hildar, Nekurr, and Tronus don't interfere as Bruv summons swamp spirits to put the remaining villagers to sleep. Jacey Tabbins proves the most reluctant; she sobs about not being able to join her parents in their utmost devotion to Nature's Lady, and screams that the village is doomed if the sacrifice is not made. Then she sleeps.

Back at the house, Bruv and Nekurr find Nera holding the mayor's brother, Rupert, at arrow point. The fat, bald man seems to have found his brother's corpse, and to have fished out a strange-looking dagger from the body. Nera has confiscated it. The man seems to have the mind of a child. Asking him about the night's events suggests that he only knows that they must do the "killing thing" or everyone will "die fast."

In further interrogating Anzila in her cage, the weaver admits that the dagger is the one used for the annual sacrifices to a being she calls the Crow God. She claims that the Night Creepers have been keeping the Crow God's presence a secret from the rest of the village for generations, hiding it under worship of Aris. However, she claims that the Crow God and the Spider God are allies, so the mayor's infertility (and the deaths of his previous wives) she blames on the incompleteness of the village's secret rites. She arrived to complete them, by brining the Spider God to Buzzard's Ford. But the mayor took her as a rival and decided to have her killed. Or so she claims.

As for the ferryman, Skeeter Zymph, he admits that he has secretly been aiding Anzila since she arrived. He helped her pull off the ruse about Keillis Isle fleeing the village after a spat with the mayor. The spat was all too real, but Anzila needed food for "her babies," and Zymph helped deliver the man to her. The plan was to stage a scene at the festival, scaring the villagers that a plague had broken out, one that only Anzila could cure. But then you lot killed the pig before it could contaminate anyone. Everything went downhill from there.

When asked about the role of the annual sacrifices, Anzila refuses to speak. She says she'd rather die by the hangman's noose or on the baron's pyre than to let Castor Wayland get the last laugh at her sacrifice.

Zymph says that ever since his induction into the secret worship, he's been told that the yearly sacrifices are what keeps the curse of Cailn at bay. He knew the mayor planned to sacrifice Anzila tonight, so he and three like-minded members of the group went after Melchic, the orphan pageant loser, to present him as an alternative sacrifice. The plan was to free Anzila from her cage and together, to storm the ceremony and kill the boy. When asked if he thinks Anzila should be sacrificed to save the town, the witch gives him a baleful glare. He just says someone must die in the circle by the sacrificial dagger, or this will be Buzzard Ford's last night.

Any other questions you might want to ask?

"Babies on taxman-diet?" Nekurr asks Anzila intrigued "Witch not thinking it would be bad idea?". He turns to Zymph. "Why is last night?"
OOC:
and yeah, what is wrong with child-man? Rupert

"The key word I hear out of this shite show over the years is annual... Erathnir... every year a sacrifice is needed and it'll never end." Tronus states before mutter he can't believe he saved this old buzzard of a woman and clenches his fist wondering if he can sock her in the face again and be justified still.
Mar 12, 2021 1:44 pm
After Tronus points out the annual frequency of the sacrifices "No stop?" Nekurr asks Anzila, like a salivating beast ready to eat her alive. Though that is just his aspect now, he is not really going to eat her... probably not taste with all that spider business going one anyway...

"Nera... tink about dis. Dese people have been lying to dem selves for decades, perpetuating dis atrocity, sacrifoicing innocents, because dey believed 'at was da only way to maintain deir way of loife. Dey thought dis probably because of da machinations of the very same dark powers that they're making dese sacrifoices to. Of course dey believe it's da end of day world if dey don't continue making 'ese sacrifices.

Dere's anudder way. If evil did this, good can undo it.

Announcing Bruv's intent, IC here, at the request of Bob due to the PvP factor, to give anyone a chance to respond and act as well.
The orc continues, "And we can be dat force of good.

I'm going to destroy da dagger.

I tink you got sumting wrong Hildar...

If dis dark god was so involved in da mortal world, and so powerful, and so wreckless, dat it could and would just immediately kill hundreds of people for not completing dis ritual, whoi would it need dis measley, one-sacrifice-a-year scheme at all? Oi tink da villagers are just scared and brain washed, and Oi tink you're overestimating da consequences.

Yea da crops die. Dey become refugees. We'll lobby for da Barons 'elp. But dis cycle of empowering evil jost because dey make loife a little harder for a bit needs to end...
"

Her starts gathering primal energies in his clawed palms.

OOC:
CESN, when I said "babies," I meant the baby spiders. :) And are you trying to Coerce Anzila? She's worried y'all are going to kill her, so that's why she clammed up. But let's say she replies...
Zymph doesn't know what Rupert Wayland's problem is. He just knows that the man was born simple. Some in town suggest it's related to the mayor's problems conceiving an heir, something about their bloodline?

Meanwhile, the witch says that the nature of dark gods is fickle and capricious. Maybe letting the annual sacrifices end will kill everyone in town. Maybe it will just kill the crops. Maybe it will do nothing. But she would rather that every last living thing in Buzzard's Ford die before she does.
OOC:
OK, so let's wait for Hildar to make one last plea if he wishes. If he wants to err on the side of killing the known-murderer witch to potentially save 100+ sleeping villagers, he and Bruv can each roll initiative and then see what happens. :)

Otherwise, Bruv can sunder the sacrificial dagger, ending the cycle of evil, but potentially unleashing unknown repercussions for the sleeping villagers. Or the sun will come up before any action is taken, by default preventing the annual sacrifice.
Mar 12, 2021 9:19 pm
Hildar shakes his head a touch sadly "People die every day, in pointless fickle ways. I'm not arguing that the sacrifices here should continue indefinitely but the one tonight, given the potential risk, should go ahead and then we should let the church and the barron know what is occurring here. They may have answers to fix this situation without potentially plunging this regions into darkness. We have two individuals who have confessed to murdering one of the barrons agents, their death is already assured so why should one of them not be used to ensure this business does not escalate? That these dark gods do not lash out against the innocent people in this region?". Before anyone can say anything he holds a hand up to forestall their objections "I won't force anyone to commit to an action they are so opposed to...." he looks directly at Bruv "I pray you are right and I hope you can live with the consequences of your actions if you are not." at that he turns and heads outside.
Mar 12, 2021 11:48 pm
"Oi too can only 'ope Oi'm roight...

Bot, if you care about 'ese people, whoi are you walkin' away!? As Oi said before, let's use wot little toime we 'ave to prepare for whatever is comin'. Wake da village... Tell 'em wots 'appened... Gadder our wills and strength... Prepare counter magicks... Foight fer dese people in da way 'at deir ancestors refused to!! And so condemned them to dis noight!
"

Bruv's eyes flash to Nekurr and Tronus to witness their will. They can probably tell that a part of the orc would rather not do this, that he has his own doubt, but the part of him that refuses to have this night dictated by the evil powers that orchestrated it is larger.

Love the way y'all are playing this out.
Anzila seems to relax at the realization that she won't be killed this night—either by sacrifice or execution. A faint glow in the sky lets you know that dawn is nearly here. With the remaining living Night Creepers restrained, you realize you haven't much time to do much to stave off any ill effects that may come at dawn.
OOC:
So wake the villagers? Cast a spell with an extreme-range to try to ward them?
Mar 13, 2021 11:21 am
Hildar gestures at the lightening sky "There is simply no time to wake them and ready them for whatever may be coming. Let them sleep, at least that way if things go really badly here some of them may have a peaceful end. You wish for this to end, to play out what may - then their fate is sealed. The debt that they owe, whatever their ancestors bargained for, is due and if they break faith with it the scales must be balanced. This is what you have chosen for them.". He stares at the sky for a few more moments "I am however trying to see if I can glean some insight into the specifics of what may be about to come....the stars can be quite.....enlightening" as he keeps staring at the sky his eyes begin to glow softly.
OOC:
Hildar is going to try casting Predict from the EPG.

Base difficulty is Average and I'm going to add the Additional Questions additional effect which means he can add one additional question plus an additional one per 2 x advantages spent.....I'll wait to roll to see if there are any setbacks, etc coming on this....

Main question would be what will happen to the village if we do not allow the sacrifice to commence? Second one will be what is the best way to keep them safe? If they're too broad let me know and I can narrow them down a bit.

OK, so that will be Hard upgraded (RPP) with 1 setback for being rushed. (I assume that a spell like this probably should take some time, but you don't have that luxury). You'll also need to find a suitable spot to "cast" the images of the spell onto, but I suppose swamp water or a bowl of water in the house will suffice for this.

I was intending it as looking at the stars and relative positions of any clouds but if there’s a small pond or something nearby he can gaze at the reflex]cation of the night sky and see what he can glean.

Well.....that could have gone better. Triumph for Anzila to feel like nows the time to offer up something helpful now she knows she’s not going to get killed here and now? I’ll get a point of Strain g=back from the Advantage.

Hildar waits for a break in the clouds to allow the stars to shine on a puddle of swamp water. Through an open window, Anzila and Zymph watch as the Elf struggles to make heads or tails of the pattern of stars that manifests on the rippling surface. Hildar stares intently for a moment—the Boar seems to be on the rise, while the Heirophant is falling... But it's no use. The sky is too dark, and the time is too short. He gives up in frustration.

From the house, the weaver-witch cackles. "Guess we'll find out soon enough how Harridan will take his vengeance for the Waylands' broken covenant. Their line will be wiped from Mennara."

Outside the house, Rupert Wayland shuffles from one foot to another, rubbing at his bonds. If the witch is right, this man, at least, will die at sunup.
