[Gameplay] 3. The Sanctum

Jul 26, 2022 10:59 pm
OOC:
I think you've had enough time to shop, so continuing on.

Following your exploration of the House of Pentheru, the party tests and recuperate then returns to the Grand Mausoleum to receive your third and final exploration site. This one is an abandoned temple that the priests believe was dedicated to Nethys, god of magic. Just as with the first two sites, the Pharasmins give your team a sketched map of the temple’s location in the necropolis.

After you enter the dead zone, part way on route, the sun beats down on the lonely, silent streets of the necropolis. Dust and sand now cover the once-bustling streets, and buildings that were once homes and shops are gradually disintegrating into rubble after centuries of neglect. Scattered throughout the ruins is the occasional palm tree or shrub, kept alive by the broken remnants of a long-abandoned irrigation system.

How do you proceed through the city?
OOC:
I'll drop Kaware from the lineup, leaving: Iseret, Khadi, Tabat, Archibald, and Skarab. Let me know if any of you don't want to continue.

Skarab is only interested in getting his crossbow bolts replenished.
Skarab analyzes the sketched map, and asks specifically where the various temple entrances would be.

He says, "Perhaps we should take an alternate entrance. What is everyone’s thoughts?"

OOC:
There was an inscribed ring from the last chapter - any chance Tabat might be able to find and return it to a loved one while in the city, before heading out? If we need to save that for later, happy to do that!
Tabat heads the group as they enter the necropolis. "Not a bad idea, Skarab," Tabat agrees, "We don't know what dangers may lurk here." He looks around carefully at the numerous crumbled remains of long-forgotten construction. "There are many places for danger to hide. We should be quiet, and watchful."

... a simple gold wedding ring worth 50 gp. An inscription in Osiriani inside the band of the ring reads, "To Akar from Panhet, Love Eternal."

If the PCs search for Panhet in Wati, they can locate the young widow, whose husband disappeared during the last year. If the PCs return the ring to her with news of the whereabouts of Akar’s body, Panhet gratefully rewards the party with 150 gp.

As you pass through broken streets, Archibald, Tabat and Iseret notice movement on the top of buildings to either side, and in the rubble beyond. It could be an ambush.
Jul 30, 2022 4:38 pm
"Be wary, my friends, for we are being stalked from above."

Archibald spends most of his free time debating with the party about creating an emblem and therefore a flag for the Destined Delvers. He plans to attach it to his flagpole, right next to the flag of the Almas University.

Once the group embarks on their next destination, he becomes alert, sensing trouble nearby. " I believe Mistress Iseret is correct, there is danger afoot."

Pretending to not notice those following them, Tabat motions for the others to follow him. He leads them to the closest defendable location he can find that might keep the enemy from encircling them, then takes a stand.

"Your element of surprise is gone!" he shouts, "Come out and have words with us, if you will, or steel if you must!"

Does this place of Nethys seem to the one the other group was interested in?
'We seem to be getting lucky on these sites.' Khadi is her usual cheerful self this morning, after another night of celebrating.

At Iseret call they are being watched however she slows, a hand drifting slowly towards her symbol on case she needs to start casting spells.

They're waiting in ambush and so when it is obvious you spot then, they act. But you're ready, too, and each of you act first. What do you do?

OOC:
Just waiting for Archibald, right? If so, @Baltar are you still just taking cover?

Archibald teams up with Tabat, his thin blade finding its mark and the thug crumpled to the ground.

You've made quick work of three of them, three remain.

They're a bit shaken, but continue to fire at you with their longbows. The top one ships at Iseret, they middle one at Tabat, and the southern one at Archibald. They all hit their targets.

Tabat relaxes visibly, but keeps his weapon drawn just in case. "There could be more of them waiting ahead. Let's be vigilant and press on."
Aug 31, 2022 2:12 pm
Skarab keeps his crossbow loaded, he stands up, and he walks, looking around for signs of other ambushes.
Aug 31, 2022 3:44 pm
Do you spend time to recover anything from their bodies? Three are easily accessible on the ground, but two will require someone to climb up onto the roofs (there are ropes hanging down, so not very difficult).
Aug 31, 2022 3:53 pm
'I am hesitant to just leave these bodies here. The Necropolis is a well of necromantic energy. Even if they tried to harm us in life, I have no wish for them to be tormented with unlife.' Khadi starts to go to each, speaking prayers to both Khepri and Pharasma over them. 'If we run into a member of the guard we should alert them as to what happened here. If not not I will inform my father when home. They can search for the one who ran away.'

As she says her prayers she will also look for any indication why they may have chosen to attack the group.
Aug 31, 2022 6:51 pm
"That is well," Tabat says to Khadi. While she is prayer over the dead, Tabat will search them over - things of beneficial value would never be harmful, but primarily he hopes to find something that might indicate who they were or what they were doing here.
Sep 1, 2022 2:43 pm
The three thugs on the ground have khopeshs and masterwork longbows. Unfortunately, they have no notes or employment contract scrolls indicating their intentions.
Sep 2, 2022 6:57 pm
Tabat takes up one of the longbows and straps a quiver of arrows over his body, just in case more enemies attack from the rooftops. He helps Khadi care for the bodies of the dead as is appropriate given the circumstances.

"Ready to move on when you all are," he suggests when all is complete.
Sep 2, 2022 7:53 pm
Skarab nods and continues walking forward cautiously, crossbow loaded and ready.
Sep 4, 2022 6:36 pm
Kadi will ask Tabat for help reaching those on the rooftops to say her prayers there, and check them, then will hold ready to continue.

With your sketched map, you easily find the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye.

Although the Sanctum’s central nave is symmetrical, the rest of the structure does not conform to traditional architecture, with wings and extensions on both sides that, except for the uniformity of the stonework, appear to have been haphazard additions. A large dome over the apse tops the roof at the north end of the temple. The Sanctum is windowless, and the temple’s exterior walls are carved with likenesses of the Nethys and other celestial figures.

No doors block the grand entrance to this building—a wide flight of steps leads directly up into the temple’s interior. Two humanoid statues flank the stairs, wearing black-and-white masks and holding quarterstaves. Just inside the entry, two rows of columns lead toward an archway in the north wall. Two smaller passages open to the east and west.
Sep 12, 2022 6:21 am
'I can see why our friends from the Inn wanted this site. They may be greatful if we offer them any relics. There was that jewel they were looking for wasn't there? We should keep an eye out for it.' Khadi muses as she looks up at the structure before remembering the newer members of the group.

' One of the other groups.. The scorched Hand I think they called themselves wanted this site. Well a jewl called the Erudite eye. Seeing as they share a name... She shrugs. ' We have had good luck in this lottery, it makes sense to offer it to them first of we find it. Anyway, trap finders first..' She suddenly claps her hands together and then gestures to Tabat and Iseret, ready to get started.
Sep 12, 2022 7:54 am
Tabat nods in agreement. Letting the more observant members of their group go first, he otherwise leads them forward into the Sanctum.
Sep 13, 2022 1:17 am
Khadi recognizes the statues outside as those of Nethys himself.

The sunshine from outside provides ambiant light, but otherwise the entrance is dark as Tabat steps inside. Several of you notice that the building is in remarkably good condition for its age, especially compared to the other structures you've seen in the necropolis.

The wind has deposited a layer of dust and sand on the floor in this room.

Six skeletal jackals guard the entrance from the gloom, and immediately attack.

Iseret is up first, then the skeletal jackals.

Hallways lead to the left and to the right, but straight on is what draws the eye.

Space and elevation lend a sense of past grandeur and majesty to this large space. A large, star-shaped fountain with a circular pool in the center sits in the middle of the chamber. The bottom of the pool is decorated with a great mosaic eye made from tiny colored tiles, and hieroglyphs are carved into the paving stones ringing the fountain. Two rows of columns support the ceiling overhead, which continues to rise to a domed ceiling in the northern portion of the chamber. At the far end of the hall, a massive statue with arms raised overlooks the entire length of the temple from atop a raised dais. East and west of the fountain, two sets of stone double doors exit the chamber.

The ceiling in that area is 20 feet high, rising to a 40-foot-high dome above the dais in the north half of the hal

The east side opens into three areas.

Lower Right
The southern area of this large space contains a long stone table, two benches, and two wooden hutches. Just visible behind a partition wall to the north is a kitchen with tables, cabinets, and a stove in the corner. Around a corner to the south stands a stone enclosure with a rounded top and a hatch set in the front.
Middle Right
A small shrine occupies a raised dais in the north of this room. Two waist-high fonts stand on either side of the altar, and a small wooden cabinet is bolted against the eastern wall. Two rows of stone benches stand to the south of the dais. A fetid odor permeates the room.

Two humans stand before the dias.
Upper Right
An immense tiled pool, empty and no more than two feet deep, lies beneath a vaulted ceiling covered with images of celestial beings. Four columns stand beyond the pool to the northeast, each carved to represent one of the four primal elements. A ring of hieroglyphs encircles the base of each pillar.

The cubicle in the center is a privy, and immaculately clean. The cubicles around the outside are personal bedchambers, each with a bed frame and a footlocker bolted to the floor. The curtains, the bed frames and the footlockers are all dusty but in good repair. The bedding has rotted away. There is nothing of value.

To the north, in the next section, a short hallway connects a shallow, empty pool to the west to two curtained cubicles to the east. A wooden bench is bolted to the floor in a small alcove across from the pool. A set of stone doors marked with hieroglyphs stands to the north.

These cubicles are similar to the other ones, if a bit bigger. However, the northernmost cubicle includes two dead bodies. One is only bare bones, but the other is a rotting, intact corpse. An old, broken scimitar lies nearby. The bones are scorched and still warm to the touch, and the corpse has suffered obviously recent injuries. Khadi immediately recognizes that this is the work of a cleric's channeling of positive energy.

It opens to a short narrow corridor leading to another door on the opposite end. While it appears safe enough, Iseret's careful searching reveals a pressure plate halfway down. Easily avoidable when marked.

The opposite door leads to an octagonal room. It's empty except for a large metal chest against the eastern wall. A series of hieroglyphs are inscribed on the wall above it. Another stone doors is set in the northern wall.

The western doors are locked, but Iseret spends a few minutes with them and opens them just fine.

Two columns carved to resemble men with their arms crossed over their chests, holding a khopesh in one hand and an ankh in the other, support the ceiling of this long chamber. Deep alcoves in the walls form burial chambers, some of which are sealed with stone doors. Other sepulchers just have sarcophagi tucked inside, while a few appear empty. To the north and south, wide passages exit the room through the east wall, each leading to stone double doors.

Three of the sepulchers contain sarcophagi, three are sealed as if to never be reopened, and three are empty.

Tabat takes the full brunt force of the undead monster's attack and feels it deep in his bones. The pain is surreal, but he grits his teeth and powers through it. He touches the inside of his arm and feels healing energy radiate through his body, then sets his gaze upon the enemy to detect any malign nature therein. "You'll. Have. To. Try. HARDER!" he says again, swinging the flail with righteous might at the skeleton.

Combat is over.

The undead warrior crumples the the ground in a clatter of bones as Tabat smashes it brutally.

It wears a mithral shirt, has a magic spear, a wooden holy symbol of Nethys, and a set of keys.

The lacquered cabinet on the west wall holds simple religious tools, including a gold chalice engraved with the visage of Nethys worth 50 gp.
Nov 30, 2022 1:10 am
Tabat bends down and scoops up the keys that had fallen to the stone floor. "These could come in handy," he says, then points to the armor. "The armor this thing is wearing, it appears untarnished by time. Can one of you make use of something so durable?"
Nov 30, 2022 7:18 am
'Khepris got my back, I don't need armour... We could see about getting it resized for Iseret? If you don't want the spear, I can hold on to it for now, for emergencies but. Well' She lifts the arm not holding the crossbow and flexs it showing off the lack of muscles.

'Jaware can you figure out what the exact enchantment is?'
OOC:
Sorry morning brain can't recall if Tabat already hasa magic weapon.
Nov 30, 2022 2:17 pm
Jaware uses Detect Magic and Spellcraft to examine the spear.

Spear of the Watchful Guardian
This magically strengthened bronze-tipped +1 spear enables its wielder to better face a variety of foes. Originally created by priests of Nethys for use by their temple guards, a spear of the watchful guardian also grants its wielder arcane aid to strike true. Once per day as a standard action, the wielder of a spear of the watchful guardian can alter the physical properties of the weapon, allowing it to bypass damage reduction of one of the following types: bludgeoning, cold iron, silver, or slashing. This change lasts for 5 minutes.

In addition, if the wielder of a spear of the watchful guardian fails an attack roll, as an immediate action once per day, she can retroactively add a +1 competence bonus on that roll. If this bonus is enough to make the failure a success, the attack roll succeeds.

Finally, a spear of the watchful guardian sharpens the senses of its wielder, granting her a +2 insight bonus on Perception checks.

Through the door, you have two choices. North, or East. Tilting your head, to the east you can see bars. To the north, the corridor meets up where you fought the statue with the magical staff, then turns east.

Which way?

[ +- ] Updated Map
The passage east immediately leads to two portcullises with bronze gates. Through the north one you see a large, star-shaped fountain with a circular basin in the center occupying most of the octagonal chamber, surrounded by a ring of stones engraved with hieroglyphs. Roaring blue flames rise form the basin to almost touch the ceiling.

To the east, through another bronze gate, you see a large chamber. Two rows of columns support the vaulted ceiling. Inscribed hieroglyphs cover most of the room's walls, bu the southern wall is rough and unfinished. Two other passages also with bronze gates, exit the room to the north and east. Within, you see four individuals. In fact, you recognize them from the party at the Tooth & Hookah. They are the adventuring party know as the Scorched Hand, lead by Veriana Hypaxes.
Dec 10, 2022 11:19 am
Tabat places his hands upon the bars along the eastern wall and pulls at them to feel how sturdy they are. He tries to stay quiet, as it doesn't appear the Scorched Hand have seen their group yet. If the bars don't give way, and they see no immediate way to retract the bars, he quietly gestures for them to back out towards the west again, to see if they might be able to circle around.

Dec 10, 2022 6:51 pm
There is indeed a mechanism that might be picked by an intrepid lockpicker.
Dec 10, 2022 7:00 pm
Tabat motions for the group to retreat back down the hall so they are out of sight. "What do you think? Iseret might more stealthily bypass the mechanism on her own, then we can move in with full force, question their presence here. Or try to go around and see if there is a better approach into the room?"
Dec 10, 2022 8:50 pm
"Picking the lock may make some noise and opening the gate almost certainly will, so if we can come around and surprise them, so much the better, but I'm game to try and pick it if that is what the group wants."
Dec 10, 2022 9:58 pm
'..I'd like to think this can be worked out peacefully among us, and that we wouldn't need surprise but... they know they are here illegally. I would not be surprised if they act rash at being caught. Going around would likely be better, catch them off guard.'
Dec 11, 2022 10:01 pm
You sneak back into the darkness, under the cover of noise by the blue flames rising behind the gates in the octagonal room.

Moving back up and around that chamber, you pass one door before coming at the northern gate to the room that the Scorched Hand is illegally searching. Iseret sneaks up to the gate and finds it unlocked -- it's likely that they picked the lock, but left it unlocked for themselves.

Unless someone has an alternative plan, he strides into the room, weapon lowered but ready. He's prepared to open dialogue by himself, if the others want to wait in the hall, or with whomever joins him.

"You there, of the Scorched Hand! You are not here by right of lottery, so by which right do you claim access to this hallowed halls? You must know your presence here would be challenged, but perhaps yet we can work something out?"

Velriana snaps up her head as the gate opens. Your formidable team moves into the room, and her own likewise spreads out to give themselves room. She looks at Tabat and says, "We had told you how important this site was, and how much of our own participation in this farcical lottery was for a chance to explore this key location in our faith's history. It is intolerable that nonbelievers and lay adherents could be allowed to loot this place for whatever is shiny, and leave the rest in ruins and destruction. We couldn't allow that, we had to get here first! Surely you see that."
Dec 19, 2022 6:50 am
Tabat watches as Velriana's companions space themselves out. 'They're ready for a fight,' he thinks, 'well so am I, if it comes to it.'

"And what precisely is your plan with this place, if not to loot it and leave it? This place was already lost to time, but for our presence here giving it a small chance to share its history with the world. Leaving it to ruins and destruction - nay! We are here to safeguard this temple's past so that is is not lost entirely. Perhaps we can work together so both our goals can be realized without...complication. What is it you hope to accomplish here?" His grip on his khopesh tightens.

Velriana
Velriana's zeal for whatever she has come searching for is undeniable. She is moved by your words and bearing, and you think that she might have even yielded to your arguments, if it were not for some driving purpose. She wants something in this place, and will stop at nothing to get it. When her words are charm fail, she will resort to violence. She clenches her jaw and the others respond accordingly, mentally getting ready for a deadly fight.

Khelru
The cleric Khelru, disciple of Nethys, has as much zeal as Velriana for safeguarding the Nepthysian icons from outsiders. He will not bend if the result is that the religious artifacts of the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye will be allowed to be plundered.

Azaz Arafe
The wizard Azaz casts love struck eyes to his lover, Khelru. He, too, is devout in his faith, even if that faith is one born of love and admiration rather than true believing.

Idorii
Alone amoung them, the fighter/rogue Idorii looks uncertain. She can probably be lured away with the promise of significant gold.
Dec 20, 2022 7:07 pm
"Your faith seems to say you are not here to plunder - well fine, but clearly you want something here, or you would have simply stood at the entrance to stop us. I understand if gold is not your motivator here - it is not mine either - but we abide the laws of this land. We have a right to what's here, those that cooperate will share in that bounty." His eyes linger on the rogue, Idorii. "If we cannot come to some sort of agreement, I'm afraid we'll need to ask you to leave. We do not desire violence. Perhaps there is something we could offer you so this ends peacefully?"
Dec 21, 2022 12:17 am
Iseret remains silent, keeping her crossbow at the ready. She has not yet drawn the bow, but there is a bolt in the well.
Dec 21, 2022 3:23 am
Velriana
Velriana laughs. "You think we care for gold?

Khelru
Khelru, as the true adherent of Nethys in the room, is sure of his own right to be there, but doesn't think your group are saying the wrong things. He's willing to listen to reason, but only so far.

Azaz Arafe
Azaz is buoyed by Khelru's firm stance, and he sees Velriana become more incensed. He rises to the bait. "You best leave and keep your mouths shut! The Scorched Hand belongs here, this is ours!"

Idorii
Idorii still looks uncertain, but her interest is piqued. She won't move without a solid offer.

Khadi heasitates, understanding some of their anger but not all. They had been lucky in the lottery, was it selfish if them to maintain their right to the lottery.

Certain words snap her out of it however. 'Belong? Yours? I share my life with Khepri but I would not dare assume anything that was his or another followers is mine.' It sounded slightly like they were just leveraging they were worshippers to give themselves an excuse. 'Would you allow all the other worshipers of Nethys to partake in this temple?the lottery exists for a reason. If ut didn't this place would have been picked clean, and treated poorly, long before you got here.

'We can keep aside relics, and pass them to you. We will not desecrate this place, perhaps one of you could come with us even to make sure nothjng happens but we must respect the rules that have allowed us in here in the first place.
Dec 28, 2022 9:48 pm
Tabat grips his khopesh tighter, watching the words weigh on those before them. The standoff was becoming tense. "Or," he adds, "if a fight must be had, any of you that wish to hold throw your lot with us, as the rightful group to be here, may share in the wealth we find and live to see another day."
Dec 29, 2022 3:11 pm
Idorii
Idorii nods at Tabat, and draws her weapon. She's facing you, but her eyes are on the spellcaster, Azaz, waiting for her moment.

That definitely hit Tabat - 19 damage took him to -5/28 hp. Khadi's channel brings him back up to +6/28, but he's prone.
Tabat screams as the burning rays burrow into his skin and he falls to the ground. Only a moment later, a bathe of healing energy washes over him and his eyes flutter open. He feels at his body, quickly releasing a burst of healing energy into his own self, then groans and pushes himself back up.
OOC:
I'm guessing no AOO since Azaz hasn't back up to Tabat yet, Velriana's at range, and Khelru is down.
He prepares to unleash an attack against any enemy that is, or comes, within range. "This could have been resolved PEACEFULLY," he yells through the attack.

Tabat ends the combat swiftly and decisively striking Velriana in the back with his khopesh. She grunts and falls to the ground, driven unconscious and dying.

Combat is over.

Idorii lowers her weapons and looks at you. "I'm sorry, she insisted we would recover a special item sacred to Nethys and then we would leave. We haven't taken anything really."
Jan 2, 2023 1:17 am
Khadi immediately rushes to look at the fall Scorched hand, casting prayers over them to stabilize their condition if she gets to them in time.

'We should hand them over to the guard, rather than deal their punishment ourselves.' Her eyes flick up to Idorii. '..thank you, for not forcing us to hurt even another...'

You stabilize them efficiently. They remain unconscious, but are no longer dying. Idorii sheathes her weapons. "You're going to spare them? You're good people. Disarm them though, they're well equipped. And gag all of them, they're all spellcasters."
Jan 2, 2023 2:49 am
'It is not our place to decide if they die, it's the guards and temple of Pharasma. We should not take it in our own hands. She also doubted her father would be too pleased if she also told him they tried to kill her and her friends. ' You do however have a very good point....' She starts to follow Idorii's advice.

Jaware assists detecting magic, and identifies the scrolls on Velriana and Azaz. The red items are unidentified at this time.

Velriana has: a magic golden apple, scroll of charm person, scroll of invisibility, scroll of magic missile, scroll of warding weapon, wand of scorching ray (4 charges), another wand, dagger, light crossbow with 10 bolts, magic bracers, a torch, backpack, explorer’s outfit, signet ring, silver holy symbol of Nethys, spell component pouch, spellbook (contains all 0-level spells, acid arrow, glitterdust, mirror image, burning hands, color spray, magic missile, ray of enfeeblement, charm person, invisibility, warding weapon, protection from evil, hold portal, comprehend languages)

Azaz has: potion of cure light wounds, potion of hide from undead, scroll of burning hands (CL 2nd), scroll of flaming sphere, scroll of identify, scroll of levitate, scroll of magic missile, scroll of shocking grasp (CL 2nd), wand of grease (10 charges), wand of vanish (9 charges); club, daggers (2), small steel mirror, spell component pouch, spellbook (contains all 0-level spells, ear-piercing scream, mage armor, magic missile, shocking grasp, burning hands, floating disk, and identify), wooden holy symbol of Nethys.

Khadi can identify the scrolls on Khelru. Khelru has: scrolls of bless (2), scroll of cure moderate wounds, scroll of effortless armor, scroll of hold person, scroll of magic weapon, scroll of sound burst, wand of cure light wounds (26 charges), alchemist’s fire (2), holy water (2); scale mail, masterwork quarterstaff, sling with 14 bullets, everburning torch, spell component pouch, wooden holy symbol of Nethys, 29 gp
Jan 2, 2023 9:12 am
Tabat relaxes as the heat of combat dies in an instant. Catching his breath, he rushes to the boy, Azaz and drops to his knees, checking him over. Velriana, she asked for this - she knew what she was doing, but this boy - this boy did not deserve death, if any of them did. He rolls Azaz's body over and thankfully finds the boy still breathing, though it was clear he would require assistance, most likely magical in nature, to lead any sort of normal life going forward. The sword had bitten deep.

As if she were an angel hearing his prayer, Khadi appears and stabilizes his wounds as she had the others. "Thank you," he says, standing. "I don't think they'll awaken naturally anytime very soon. We can work together to bring them up once we've cleared the floor. And yes, we'll separate them from what makes them most dangerous, just in case."

He nods to Idorii. "Did Velriana mention anything more about this special item you were looking for? Or anything else we should expect down here?"

Tabat helps gather their enemies' belongings square away their bodies as comfortably as possible until they can be brought to the entry of the temple.
OOC:
That's a lot of loot :D I vote all the arcane scrolls and wands go to Jaware, and all the divine scrolls to Khadi (unless someone has a UMD score that can make use of those things). Scrolls and wands are just too situationally handy to sell, unless we have duplicates, imo. We can work out the other stuff later with the other loot.

There are three exits from the room: the one to the west, the gate you choose to ignore, the one to the north that was unlocked and you came through (Idorii unlocked it), and the one to the east.
Jan 12, 2023 1:51 am
"Someone else must be down here," Tabat says, worried. He points east. "Let's take a look through there first, then double back for anything we missed."
Jan 12, 2023 7:04 am
'... Do you think it is safe to leave these 3?' The footstep had been coming back up the stairs, but the idea of leaving 3 helpless people when an unknown was around unsettled the duskwalker.
Jan 12, 2023 3:39 pm
There are two areas you haven't explored, a room to the north, and what lies behind the eastern gate. In addition, you haven't interacted with the pool / fountain through the eastern gate, or searched the place for hidden baubles.

Leaving them should be fine as you haven't seen any wandering monsters, and the bloody footprints clearly had left the cellar.

"It'll take a concerted effort on all our parts to get all three of them up to the entry of this place. I think they're alright for now, while we clear the rest of this floor, then we can get them and anything we find down here upstairs."

Tabat heads to the eastern doorway.

Jan 13, 2023 1:10 am
Your two rogues make quick work of the barred gate. The hallway beyond curves north, and leads to a pair of double doors. These easily open to a small room.

Hieroglyphs cover the walls of this chamber. In the middle of the room, a large and majestic stone sarcophagus rests atop a raised stone platform, and several clay jars sit on the floor nearby. Two lacquered benches stand near the doors to the south.
Jan 13, 2023 8:32 am
Tabat carefully circuits the room, not touching anything at first. His eyes pass over the walls. "Can any of you read this? Any warnings, or indicators who is buried here?"

Once the rogues feel is is safe to do so, Tabat will help open the sarcophagus, using his trusty crowbar as needed.
Jan 14, 2023 3:05 am
"Careful. There is a Glyph of Warding there although I do not have the spell needed to decipher it. And that wouldn't help disarm it, anyway." He indicates a small compartment.

Idorii
"We did not open these. They wanted to leave Djedihepet's grave goods with him."
Jan 15, 2023 10:28 am
Tabat nods understandingly. "Well, lucky I think for you we do not have such concerns. As long as we are respectful with the body, it is lawful for us to take what is within.

Iseret, is this a type of magical trap you can disarm?"
Jan 15, 2023 6:23 pm

Khadi can't read the hieroglyphs, though I keep thinking she can read ancient Osirian. Probably l because I almost always play characters who would have reason to know ancient languages..
Jan 15, 2023 7:51 pm
OOC:
Ill add a bit more here. I missed providing singe important details.
The original founder and first high priest of the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye was laid to rest in this tomb. The hieroglyphs on the walls name him Djedihepet, and reveal that he died in –1599 ar. He is described as "a wise counselor, trusted keeper of secrets, and good friend of the Pharaoh."
OOC:
A Knowledge Nobility test would be needed to learn more about him, but I don't think any of you are not untrained.
Inside the sarcophagus, the mummy of Djedihepet is laid to rest next to a mummified rat, his familiar in life. The clay canopic jars are sealed with wax, but if opened, they contain only Djedihepet’s desiccated and preserved internal organs.

Iseret and Khadi find a hidden button near the head of the sarcophagus. Pressing the button will cause the platform under the sarcophagus to slide to the south on a set of concealed tracks, revealing a secret opening beneath it. This is what is trapped.
Jan 18, 2023 6:35 pm
'....Okay so does anyone have a very long stick? Of Iserte can try and hit this button from a distance? We can hope we're out of the range of the spell ?'
Jan 18, 2023 9:50 pm
"Hmm," Tabat says. "I would not ask anyone else to do this, if I were not willing to do it myself. Everyone stand out of the room - I will trigger the trap myself and, er, run away. As quickly as I can. If the rest of you are sufficient distance away, at least it is only myself being risked. And Khadi, Kepri will see in my heart that I do not hope or intend to suffer harm this way - I only hope I am quick enough."

Unless there is argument against this, he will do as said once everyone else is in the clear. He will use the magical spear found earlier, if possible, to do this with some range.

The Glyph of Blasting only does damage in a 5' area, so you're undamaged. The magic spear, with your save, is not destroyed either.

Djedihepet’s mummy wears a simple onyx funerary mask worth 20 gp and a gold and black-enameled holy symbol of Nethys worth 50 gp.

The secret compartment under the sarcophagus contains a pearl of power and a magic ring.
Jan 19, 2023 5:21 am
"HAH!" Tabat shouts as he skitters backward, not only saving his hide, but the magic spear as well. "Too slow, trap."

He takes up the items and looks closely at the pearl and ring, storing them all except the pearl. Once they realize what it is, he hands it to Khadi for safe keeping. "Safe keeping, for keeping us safe," he says, a gentle smile under his mask that can be heard in his voice, if not seen.

"Shall we head back to that northern room?"

If there are no disagreements, he leads them to the door north of where they fought the followers of Nethys.
Jan 19, 2023 1:48 pm
The northern doors open easily (after a thorough review by your trapfinders). Idorii prepares herself for sudden combat as the doors swing open, and Jaware covers from the back.

A large silver summoning circle is inlaid in the floor tiles near the center of this octagonal chamber. In the northeast corner of the room, a set of narrow steps leads up to a raised dais. A concave stone bench, almost a throne, perches atop the dais, flanked by two bronze braziers. Four columns carved in the form of fantastic creatures support the room’s vaulted ceiling.

The columns in the room are incredible examples of ancient sculpture. The column to the northeast depicts a beautiful, hawk-winged, succubuslike woman, while the southeast column is fashioned in the form of a feminine figure of billowing smoke or clouds crackling with electricity. The northwest column portrays a half-skeletal spellcaster of some kind, and the column to the southwest resembles a winged, angelic creature wearing a metallic mask.

Tabat cracks the creature shaped like Arcanotheign with his adamantine flail, the weapon unharmed by the assault.

Jaware fires two more arrows... and does some small damage to it.

The creature focuses on Tabat, its stone longsword swinging precisely... but doing only minimum damage to Tabat.

Tabat allow the head of the large flail to rest upon the ground. "Well done," he says loudly to the others, "Everyone alright?"

There's one encounter left in this dungeon, and it's not that terribly interesting. Should we wrap up this dungeon with a thorough looting? Then you can deal with the Scorched Hand, and we can move to Book 2?

OOC:
Absolutely. I wasn't bored, but sounds like a good plan to me. Good call for stuff like this to keep the AP moving.

The statue room: The two statues each dropped a masterwork longsword.

The fountain room: in the south side you say a fountain win blue flames behind bars. Once you gain access, there is little to be found other than a secret door. Inside is a huge keystone (560 pounds) that can control an ankhet on the grounds. It is too large to move.

The Catacombs: you didn't fully loot the catacombs, but if you spend time to do so, you would find: six golden funerary masks worth 100 gp each.

And lastly, The Hidden Reliquary: this formerly hidden chamber is just slightly open, and within, a stone effigy of a humanoid figure stands at the north end of this room, its arms spread in a gesture of supplication, or as if commanding an object to rise in the air. The figure’s face is devoid of detail, with only vague contours where the eyes and nose should be. An extensive series of hieroglyphs covers the western wall, opposite a stone bench that stands against the eastern wall.

A glyph of warding has gone off inside, and blood spatters the area. This is the source of the bloody footprints you saw earlier. Someone had come down here, snuck inside, and then made off with ... what? There are a few clues, including some poetry:

Woe to you who would plunder the Reliquary of the Thrice-Divided Soul. Turn away, lest the harsh judgment of the Forgotten One fall upon you and your descendants for a thousand generations. Turn away, for his ka cannot be appeased and it shall call forth legions of the dead and the damned. Turn away, and may the All-Seeing Eye and the Lady of Graves take pity on you, for if not, the Forgotten Pharaoh shall consume you, body and soul.

The "ka" is one component of the ancient Osirian concept of the soul, which was divided into five parts. The ka contains a person’s "vital spark," that which distinguishes the living from the dead.

Examining the effigy, there are subtle indentations that tell you it was wearing something, a mask or headdress.

Lastly, the Detect Magic-ing you do tells you that there is a lingering necromantic aura. Whatever was in here must have been collosally powerful to leave such a residue even after it's been gone for at least a few hours. This must have been what the Scorched Hand was looking for.

Congratulations on Earning Level 4!
OOC:
Here we are at the end of the book. You will safely exit the necropolis. There are a couple things to wrap up before we continue with book 2.
The Scorched Hand
You have the Scorched Hand at your mercy, to leave or to deliver to the priests of the Grand Masouleum - they will take this seriously and you would be asked to speak directly with the High Priestess Sebti the Crocodile.

You also have a debt to settle with Idorii, who helped you with the Scorched Hand in exchange for a share. She'll be satisfied with 1,000 gp worth of loot or coin.

Rest and Recovery
You have time to rest and recover, regaining your spent spell slots, etc., and any simple shopping (anything masterwork or lower quality can be easily purchased).

The Auction
If you're interested in selling any of the items you found, you hear of an upcoming auction in Wati where you might be able to get good prices for your treasures, and the see (perhaps purchase) items found by other adventuring parties. (This is how book 2 starts off.)
Lastly, we will need to talk about Book 2. Are you interested in continuing? Should we speed up the dungeon crawls by glossing over less critical encounters?
Jan 28, 2023 4:25 pm
I'm all for continuing, though Iseet will need a new shortsword. Also, I think things have calmed enough to say I'm back!
Jan 29, 2023 12:49 am
100% happy to continue. I think we can definitely gloss over some of the more 'filler' encounters, things that don't impact the story much, or or maybe tactically and thematically uninteresting. Let's be the first 6-part AP to actually finish completely on GP ;)

I'm going to run through and jot down all our loot asap and we'll figure out how much we gained.

Happy to continue. Don't mind on encounters but am still at the level where I will just be shooting a crossbow most the time :P But they do force me to use up healing in the one point for them sticking, but happy either way.

A few things to wrap up then.

You don’t receive hearty congratulations from the priests of the Grand Mausoleum, but High Priestess Sebti the Crocodile is genuinely intrigued (and just a little alarmed) about any information you choose to share concerning your adventures. Of particular interest to the high priestess are the mysterious item stolen from the Reliquary of the Thrice-Divided Soul and of the stone tablet in the library containing Pharaoh Djederet II’s decree *, though she has no other information about those two items or the questions that they raise.
[ +- ] * Library
They do confirm that since you found the Scorched Hand in the Sanctum you were assigned, they consider all of their gear tours for the taking. The Velriana, Azaz, and Khelru are taken to prison to further pay for their crimes, with that sentence to last at least until the event is over.

Just some thoughts on our outro stuff for this adventure -

Seems to Tabat that some holy relic was here that may have been 1 of 3 parts of an ancient lich necromancer's, the Forgotten Pharaoh's, phylactery. From the context, clearly it was (or was part of) a mask or headdress.

We could give Idorii the Apprenctice's Cheating Gloves, or just 1,000gp - whatever works there.

I say we save selling our more special/magical items until this auction and see what happens. Anything of more historical import. If we can get some more gp out of it, great! Tabat will save any of his share of coin and might hope to find some slightly better armor, or start looking into the standard Ring of Protection / Cloak of Resistance options.
