I don't think I've played before with any of you aside from Alepous (or at least not long enough to remember quickly) though I've certainly seen your names around. So hooray for new acquaintances!
I'm FlyingSucculent, usually FS for short. I like scenery descriptions and shipping characters, and I've been to an arcade about... five times in my life? Still, I'll do my best to fit the bill. XD
That said, if Alepous and PhoenixScientist are cool with the fairy and the magical girl, then so far this seems to work:
• Brainiac = P5
• FlyingSucculent = P4
(btw this is an awesome idea for a comic and I am planning on making something, if you do not mind.)
I believe in early poster benefits. FS & Brainiac should get their pick. I'll take the Fairy Girl.
• Brainiac = P5
• FlyingSucculent = P4
• Alepous = P3
• PhoenixScientist = P2
…then go right ahead and name your characters. I’ll start you off with an unbelievably awesome power/item, then pull a Metroid on you.

@alepous, an anime schoolgirl, according to my recent Google search. That screams Magical Girl to me!
Create your characters on GP (but don’t bother listing the 3d6/1d6/rage stuff—you lose it after this scene) …and post when ready!
I don’t need a character sheet. Just your character image, player number, name and how many hearts she has are enough.
Rolls
Sprite Roll (test) - (2d6)
(66) = 12
As for the post itself, it gives me a great set-up for what I have planned for now, and also for something I have planned for later… and the plan for later will be adjusted significantly to fit the unexplored part of your world (while still adhering to the No-Killing violence setting).
We won’t return to your games of origin, BUT sequels and spinoffs exist.
_____
Also, I’ll plan on posting tomorrow, pushing scenes that are ready to move forward. Those who aren’t ready by Monday will be my priority on Tuesday/Wednesday/when-ready.
I don’t think I’m spoiling any surprises by saying my plan is not to keep you as single players for long.

…and just the space + number tells the code whether numbers are blue (hero), green (sprite) or the Chinese word for "girl" (or "fairy" in P2’s case).
Oh… and don’t type other numbers or weird stuff might happen. (I think.)
Rolls

Or can you? Hero 2 - (3d6)

And maybe the stat needs to be first. ?
Still can't figure out what those characters are supposed to be..

Rolls
Test Sprite 2 - (1D6)

I intend to walk you through this stuff as it comes up. Level 1 is the tutorial level.
Also… no expert/prepared. You roll 2d6, and you’ll get items and spells and such that let you roll 3d6 (or 1d6) for specific actions.
For antihero/antisprite, you’re rolling to see if you get hit, so 1d6 is a good thing with anti- rolls.
A GM move could also make you temporarily worse at an action, forcing you to roll 1d6 (or 3d6).
TL;DR - roll 2d6 for everything until I tell you otherwise.

(The roller looks for the exact reason as specified in the code, so space is important. I think it only ignores case, though don't quote me on that.)
Edit: ah, I see, the total.
Edit: for anti-hero specifically, that is. I don't know how your code looks, but sometimes the order of lines can cause strange things to happen if one case overwrites the other.
Both antihero and anti pixie are defense for different things? But I'm worse at defending against the things I'm good at?
..And I think Anti-Sprite is not actually a valid roll? The only place it is mentioned in the rules is in the test roll section, not in actual types of rolls, at least.
Current is zero. You use all of the flames at once. So you can hold out until you have four if you want to, or rage with 3 dice the first chance you get. (But there’s a cooldown if you rage with only 1 or 2 🔥.) I’ll track it.
Anti-hero is like Take a Powerful Blow in Masks. You will usually get hit—in both Masks and this game, except for Pix. The fairy is tiny and hard to hit. There’s a 69% chance of a miss and <3% chance the enemy will combo.
@phoenixscientist,
Anti-sprite fields exist, but you won’t encounter them frequently. Think of a cold iron gate. The fairy can fit between the latticework, but the material itself overwhelms her. The odds of getting through it unhindered are slim!

Also, submitted the sheet! It's public, so feel free to read if anyone is interested in a history of a fictional character in a fictional game written by a fictional game magazine. XD
Your rage-o-meter maxes at 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
I love the art for Pira! She really does look like my character! (Approved, of course!)

(I’ll call attention to this the first time it happens in game.)
But that won’t be possible until you somehow wind up in the same game.
Where are these rules coming from? They weren't on the sheet we were given.

Hero is rolled to attack a villain; antihero is rolled when a villain attacks you. So an anti- roll is your reaction.
…
Sprite rolls are never attacks. They’re either magic (fire wall, icy floor, lightning to jumpstart a car, healing water, etc.) or movement (leap, stealth, dance, roll past axe-swinging statue, etc.). Antisprite is rolled when you enter a place that opposes either of these things.
You are correct that a fairy shouldn’t be bad at defending against magic. That is NOT what antisprite is.
Antisprite is a roll you make when you’re confronted by something that feeds off of your magic/fey-ness (an antimagic field, a cold iron cage) or impedes movement—like a powerful wind that impedes flight!
While Pix can dodge crossbow bolts far easier than Thundra the Thicc, which of the two would fare better against a hurricane? This is the sort of situation that calls for antisprite. Does that make sense?
But getting hit on an antisprite roll means you’re hindered. Like sprite, antisprite is not meant to inflict damage.
Where are these rules coming from? They weren't on the sheet we were given.
You’ll get a power-up as well. (Also temporarily, like the way you have 💛💛💛💛💛 for health right now, but are supposed to start with 💛💛.)
I also originally had "From" instead of "Game" and just changed that to make an acronym. I couldn’t unsee FIRL.

…power-ups were always the plan!
(I didn’t originally plan on giving you a taste of high-level power-ups, but it seemed like a good way to try out different kinds.)
PS: fun fact, my PC browser can't actually display the heart symbols for two of the players (it replaces them with unknown symbol icon, so it doesn't matter mechanically, I still see their number). Must be missing a font, or maybe it's a browser quirk. Phone sees them though!
If you botch the code, but still roll d6’s, don’t re-roll. It’s not a problem for me to figure out the result manually.
@phoenixscientist, once you get a character for Pix, I’ll edit the prior posts so you post as your character. No rush… whenever you find the image you want will do.
I was hoping your vision of the fairy world would drive the power-ups you get (it did!—better than expected!), so I already have a wand for you! Your post gave me a couple other ideas too..!

So, I can live without the music, but before I totally scrap that… does SPOTIFY region lock?
And yeah, Spotify blocked Russia, so it won't work for me. That said, I can always just experiment with applying VPN to YouTube link, eventually I'll find a country it works with! Probably. Maybe.
So it did work from the start for you (and Brainiac, I believe)… I was hoping it was just the m.youtube from phone-posting that was the issue.
And yeah, Spotify blocked Russia, so it won't work for me. That said, I can always just experiment with applying VPN to YouTube link, eventually I'll find a country it works with! Probably. Maybe.
Off With Your Head’s a fun tune. In the original video (not the one I posted, which was just audio with a still image), a dancer in a black suit transforms into a werewolf.

So this^ is my inspiration for Big Wolf.
Bad Wolf is probably more obvious:

He’s bad. So bad. You know it, y’know…
@phoenixscientist, I just noticed you submitted Pix! Approved, of course!
Does all YouTube content have a region (b)lock? Or is that usually the case for professional musicians and such? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a New York-based band, active since 2000. So I imagine official videos (or audio) would be flagged as USA or North America or whatever.
These werewolf head costume props are fantastic.
Now that Kurumi managed to beat the wolves (barely —she needed at least a combo that round!), I think we should pair her up with someone. It’ll be Pix-Kurumi and Pira-Thundra, unless of course one of you tries not to pair up. Then I gotta pull something outta my @$$ go with Plan B.
If either Pira or Thundra chose not to pair with each other, I’d have randomized the pairings instead.
I’m working on a post so both pairs can get acquainted in a very-temporarily-safe environment.
..Our characters uniting in pairs makes me want to ship them. :D
PS: also, fixing typos in posted posts? Relatable.
Gonna give your characters time to get on that ship meet before you find out who entered whose game.
Here is SF2010:
(Remember that year, when everyone was cybernetically enhanced and flying robots patrolled the streets?)
I love Thundra’s reaction to the floor!
You will be somewhere in Feet of Rage or Barbaric Commando soon, though. I don’t want to do a whole level in a real game (that probably only I have played), so this is just the transition.
I’m going to push forward the Portal Area scene a little bit. I don’t want anyone to feel rushed though. I just have free time (my first class starts at 9:30) and it might be more aptly timed to reveal the glitch before Pira answers Thundra’s question.
This is what a fairly looks like to me.

And obligatory Disney inclusion.

I'm not familiar with the series, just lore and mythology.
If you prefer human-size or child-size rather than doll-size, it’s fine. You still are physically weak and good at dodging, so I would suggest no taller than 4’11" (1.5m) tall. Your avatar looks thin as a rail, which is a good build for a tall fairy.
I’ll edit the scene so your fairy is petite, but not tiny. When you mentioned Tinkerbelle being 7", I took that to mean Pix is 7" tall.
IC, you’re from different ‘lands.’
So for Pira, this is how you get food, and Thundra is down a couple 🩵s. (Helping a new friend/surprise ally/hot blonde regain health is heroic, ain’t it?)
It’s not really giving anything away to say @Dmbrainiac can eat the Hero Sandwich—or even half, if you want to be polite and share—and regain 🩵🩵. I’d much rather you solve the "puzzle" and not wonder about the food.

I get to hear Heads Will Roll on the way home from the store… love that remix. Spotify rarely picks it.
But this reminds me… those who couldn’t hear the tune: @FlyingSucculent,@Alepous, did the NES game music videos work? (Not that they were particularly interesting… but I meant to ask before,)

Here’s the real life Tokyo image that is inspiring the FEET OF RAAGE area you are in.
We DID agree to no death, so I hope we’re good with the Powerpuff Girls rule. Whenever something happens to a building, it just so happens nobody is inside it.

@Dmbrainiac This image is also cool. I like the previous one with the brown palette though.
Yeah, I didn’t want you all to be apart for long. I was going to have two different action scenes; one for each pair, but decided to cut that.
You don’t need to roll anything. If at least one of you narrates helping the other, that should do the trick.
On second thought, since we haven’t used the roll-girl as a trigger, let’s not start that. I’m going to just have your number count as a success rather than trigger anything.
I figured out how to work the code so it supports that, too! (The trick is that it has to count as a miss when you roll anti-hero.)

For your roll tables, please remove the anti-sprite row. That will no longer be a valid roll.
It occurred to me that triggering a team thing was going to be huge pain in the butt that I would regret for the entire campaign, so I came up with a solution that worked.

If you have Anti- as the reason, the first green line turns your number into a bigger number. The second green line hides that big number in a box with your number on it.
Without getting into the details of that, I will move this game forward on Monday. Feel free to converse IC amongst yourselves if you’d like.
(Also, I intend to give Pix and Pira loot after the next wave, then pit you against the Lv.1 boss. That will lead to another glitch that takes you to the game Hero Girl Sprite, where you’ll find out IC what is going on.)

I thought my guess was accurate but I missed by a mile. I edited in the word "over" to bury my shame.
(Pesky freedom units, making me math; great accuracy on the guess though!)
But being off by exactly one mile is funnier to me. I "missed by a mile" and was within a 0.0125% margin of error at the same time.
Babality is cute… but Mortal Kombat never tells you all the trouble it causes to spare your opponent in this way.
Barbaric Commando is named after Bionic Commando, which shocked late-80s NES-gamers when Zombie Hitler not only says a swear ("damn"), but his head explodes in the dialogue box when you shoot him in the face with a bazooka.

Just a thought there…not necessarily the official story. (EDIT - or maybe it is now. I like the idea that this adventure will lead to a happy ending, in which the heroines can travel the various game-worlds freely and safely.)
Something happens when you empty a wand of all its spells. (You don’t know what, but you know it’s something good.)
• Embiggen (which you cast on the wingless fairy)
• Wallflower
Once you cast Wallflower, you’ll gain some kind of power from the Flower Wand.
@Alepous Even though you posted an action with your defensive roll, feel free to post another move. I used your dance roll as an excuse to let every heroine attack first. (I was going to use the fire as a means to win/lose initiative, but I liked the mental picture of Kurumi dancing out the flames on her shoes.)
• Embiggen (which you cast on the wingless fairy)
• Wallflower
Once you cast Wallflower, you’ll gain some kind of power from the Flower Wand.
I've seen a lot of one-use scrolls in RPGs - the ones which let you cast a specific spell and then disappear. I think DnD has something similar? But specifically for weapons, I think I've seen exactly a wand somewhere. Can't remember where though.
Either way, my bet (based on video game experience) is that the wand will evolve into a different item or a stronger version of itself. It'll be curious to see if I'm correct. XD
• the wand will ‘evolve’
• when we’re in level 2, you won’t have any of the powers/items that you found here or in your game of origin
…
Okay, my thinking here if you’ll bear with me: The last time I ran a L&F hack (Thundra’s debut game, at least as far as I know), everyone had strengths and weaknesses. You rolled 3 dice for strengths and 1 die for weaknesses.
It wasn’t a bad way to run the game. (It’s actually considerably easier for me because I don’t need to manage/balance abilities.) But I chose to do something that requires a little more work on my end because, for a video game world, players should get loot or power-ups.
But if the power-up is "roll 3d6 all the time" and it’s permanent, you pretty much only need to loot once. So I am borrowing from other game concepts—Pathfinder wands have charges, for example. Or for a video game example, in Breath of the Wild, weapons break very easily.
So as long as power-ups are limited, I have more to work with, and they have more value I believe because you will definitely lose them (and probably find them again—especially the ones you like best). And as far as making power-ups a surprise, my thinking is that—like in any Super Mario sequel, you don’t really know how Elephant Mario plays until you pick up an elephant-ears hat and find out!
In my head, your two recent posts are two different "turns." (I could see why you might see them as one turn though.)
…
@PhoenixScientist if you don’t want to be surprised:
• 4d6 Hero to attack while you have 🔥🔥🔥🔥
• 3d6 Hero to attack while you have at least 🔥
• +1 🔥 (4 max) if your attack misses completely.
• once you have zero flames, Faerie Fire ends
That said, the wand itself is reacting to the environment. So the surprise I had in mind was that you cast Wallflower in the presence of Sheng Long’s Firewall, and what the Flower Wand becomes is a Fire Flower. If you cast the wand’s final spell somewhere else, it will do something different (reacting to whatever is in that environment).
The rules hack - I’m using L&F as originally stated:

…but… as we’ve been playing Level 1, which was intended as a tutorial level for you to get used to the combat, I also have been updating the power-ups. The original list of power-ups was as the above screenshot implies: every power-up was 3d6 (or 1d6 anti-hero). What I have now is more varied and interesting. I hope you’ll agree as you come across them.
It’s not that I didn’t have a plan for items/power-ups. But by not spelling it all out for you up-front, I was able to make tweaks for the better. There’s a lot you can do mechanically with a simple system. And while I was honestly very nervous about pre-gen characters, that has allowed me to give the different sets of items a flavor that matches the character.
Levels 2-5 - I don’t like to give everything away, but the plan is to get you into the Hero Girl Sprite game, and from there you’re on a quest to find Missy Girl. Hero Girl Sprite will be a hub world where NPCs can send you to ‘faraway lands’ (other games) to find their missing heroine.
Your choices will be named after real games without completely resembling them. The Polygon Trail, for example, is named after The Oregon Trail. I never played or saw that game. I know of it. I know it’s old. The Polygon Trail will be from the early days of polygon games, aesthetically speaking. In-character, our heroines will see this land as a "frontier." You won’t die of dysentery.
You can’t die at all. There will be a consequence for losing fights, but so far my closest call in an L&F hack was in Cartoon Peril, where I managed to KO a few PCs in the final scene before Thundra the Thicc saved the day.
I feel like you get the idea about combat. If you feel the same and want to move onto plot, head to Aka Nishin’s chamber.
And while this next bit pales in comparison, my lawn mower and pool pump both decided to stop working.
I have a partly written post ready to drop for this game. If anyone wants to reply to Pira, I’ll adjust as needed. But I think I’ll get the next scene up tomorrow or Wednesday.
I have some thoughts for when we do the Reset… but let’s get there first.
Also, @Alepous, sorry to hear you lost both of your parents so recently.
I’ll wait until the Lv.2 Reset before seeking a new Fairy Girl.
If you edit your post for the narrative of that, feel free to roll 1d6 Hero just to see if the third die also lands.
…
I see you have a roll table now, which will help! Especially after the reset. I’m considering making Hero Girl Sprite a 6-player machine so if the new player doesn’t want to be Fairy Girl, there will be two more options. Toony Girl, from the cartoon laser disc era (Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace, Time Gal) and Spacy Girl from… space (Metroid, Street Fighter 2010, Xenophobe).
Of currently-played heroines, only Thundra would need to change her number (to P6, keeping her as the extreme).
I’ll delete your second post since the Anti-Hero miss counts!
I didn't delete the post since I think it's considered something of a bad etiquette move because people who already saw it can get confused? At least I've seen this sentiment before, though maybe it applies more to editing. I personally don't mind, just wasn't sure if anyone else does~
So, before the inevitable reset, are there any objections to a 6-player game?

I don’t necessarily need six players. It’s more like if someone would rather be Samus Aran than Navi, the next to join has that option.

Welcome, @ClaCle, @Tickettbror, @Ysolde!
Aaaaand sorry the forum is so empty. Busy night irl, it turns out. It’s the big dance recital weekend. I’ll post a proper rules update when I can. But I at least wanted to send out the invites and welcome you while I’m in the theater parking lot.
Thanks for joining us!!
Welcome, folks! Piranha High Five!
(I'm a bit intimidated since I know I don't do good in big groups because of my slower posting rate, but maybe it'll work out. Do let me know if it isn't working out, though!)
Do you have pregen sheets for the characters, I assume?

Pira has an extensive and entertaining backstory, plus some notes. That’s player’s choice. (I do enjoy reading this stuff, but I don’t require it.)
I would like your naming format to be like P3 - Kurumi, P4 - Pira the Piranha and P6 - Thundra the Thicc. (Ditch Fairy/Toony/Spacy Girl names. They are meant to be changed in the way that the 1993 Super NES game, Secret of Mana, had PCs named "HERO", "GIRL" and "SPRITE.")
First, I rolled Anti-Hero to see if the enemy can actually hit my little fairy body!
Then I spent 5MP cast my cheap, overpowered spell on the scroll I found using a cheat code.

No worries about the weekend. I have three daughters in a dance recital tomorrow, so I can relate to busy weekends and irl curveballs.
But when he saw her flexing he just walked away mumbling "nope, nope, heck nope…"
Also, here’s a screenshot of Thundra’s sheet.

That’s all you need!
Question on my power update: is the 4D item one use, or more of a permanent power unlock? Also, is it the personal item, or something not yet listed?
And a similar question towards items of Magic and Fuzzy Dice, are they one use?
Edit: I'm also very curious about what exactly you did to d12s. :0

Magic scrolls, wands, rings, etc. give MP to the magical girls. P4-6 get 1 MP.

This works out so the original characters have the same exact dice odds as before. One exception: each of Pira’s anti-hero dice are 8.33% more likely to land in her favor.
Pira has an extensive and entertaining backstory, plus some notes. That’s player’s choice. (I do enjoy reading this stuff, but I don’t require it.)
But for now, here's Sparkle.

Example. Sparkle finds a Ring of Fire. It has two spells.
• 1 MP - Fire Ball - roll 3d6 to throw fire
• 2 MP - Friendly Fire - roll 3d6 to heal your friends
She would get 3 MP because she’s a magical fairy. It would be up to her whether to throw three fire balls or use the healing fire.
But if Pira picked up the ring, she’d get 1 MP and could only throw one fire ball. (I wouldn’t bother to mention the 2 MP spell in this case.)
@ClaCle, character approved! Cute image!

Max health increases as we go, so Sparkle will eventually benefit from healthier foods. With 2HP, any food is full health.
Items will be GM-rolled, by the way.
Really leaning into that arcade feel!
Edit: a rice ball? Don't you mean jelly-filled donut? :P

If I have to type anyway, I may as well give the mana spirits some personality. The emojis I picked are similar to actual mana spirits and other companions from Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana. They will all be the same size as Sparkle.
You can flavor that as a Brazenly Heroic (hero), Graceful or Zestfully Fey (sprite) action, if the enemy has been defeated.
If by "roll result" you mean as part of a combo, sure! If it’s a boss, no guarantee he’ll accept your "friendship"… but it will probably work if he’s on the verge of defeat.
Okay… gonna risk embarrassing myself with a failed dice test, but here it goes!

I would like to begin Level 2 in the next couple days. Is Wednesday good for everyone?
Tickettbror & Ysolde,
If you need direction on character creation, I’m happy to help. But the rules are *really* light.
Pretty much, Toony Girl is quick and agile, and she’s better at dodging a punch than throwing one. If you’re familiar with the mid-eighties Don Bluth laser disc games (Dragon’s Lair & Space Ace), Toony Girl’s most prominent skill is probably getting out of the way of cartoon perils, like lasers and gargantuan snakes, and jumping off of floors as they crumble apart.
Her personal item, the Panic Button, is based on the Energize button in Space Ace and the Time Stop button in Time Gal.

…adult hero Space Ace!

He still dies in one hit, though.
Time Gal has to think fast a lot…

…except at the end of the stage. Time stops, giving you lots of time to make an uninformed decision.

Up, down or shoot? Seriously, they all look as hopeless!

You each get your own screen!

But when someone dies, one third of the screen doesn’t have much going on.

Are our personal items with us right now, or do we need to find them too? (Erm, that'd be a bit awkward for Thundra.)
Also, are they just for flavor, or do they do things?
…
No items when we start. Personal items function as a longer-lasting weapon, magic and/or armor, plus they add a non-combat bonus like 3D Hero: Feats of Strength while the item lasts. (I don’t think I’m giving anything away saying it’s Thundra’s item that gives the strength bonus.)
Nothing to fight yet. Oh! And before we get to that—to those new here, there is no killing or death in the arcade. You knock enemies out when you have to fight.
I’m not worried about the more upsetting stuff happening here, but one other safety bit was to avoid any real-world issues.
Feel free to bot Thundra as needed during this time.
Brainiac will be on vacation and ClaCle has posted (in the Absence thread) that she’ll be offline for a while.
We can keep the story moving, which at this point is giving you IC knowledge that there is a missing hero from the land (game). The NPCs seem to think Sparkle is that missing hero, but since the player isn’t immediately available to deny that, you can all just assume that—like the rest of you—Sparkle has never been to this "land" before.
@Tickettbror I wish a quick recovery!

The ones I circled are my inspiration for Blabbit and Munchroom. (And a Sickamore Bee was mentioned. The actual game’s Buzz Bees are scary if your level is less than 5.)
I googled Toucan’t and was pleasantly surprised by the result:

Edit: and I also wanted to say that I enjoyed seeing your work process in the AMA thread! :D

She’s "Small Fry," whose starting powers are Shrinking and Fire.
The eye and claw are of The Purr-fessor, an AI-generated NPC. He’s a highly intelligent talking cat who I thought was so silly I wanted him to be my character’s mentor.
Posted two possible destinations. Yes, Bob Questgiver was actually the planned name of a villager. Since Pira said "quest-giver," Doug could only imagine she meant the man of that name. (And profession.)
(I’m imagining this would be Split-Screen at the arcade, so HGS should support that. In other words, feel free to allow your character to "kinda have a feeling" about how the other heroines are doing whenever you split.
It’s kinda like how you could always peek at other people’s screens in off-line shooters and racing games, which I used to be good at in Mario Kart.)

I basically split the party three ways, since Brainiac is on vacation and ClaCle might need quite some time. Regardless, I’ll keep the P1 spot for her and bot Sparkle in the background.
Still I imagine that Princess Diamond basically has some sort of Murphy’s Law aura in her own world so that death is basically nearly always around the corner but, somehow she always survives it or as far as she remembers. Basically she doesn’t have to remember all the times she’s died…
@Ysolde, I take it you’re familiar with Dragon’s Lair, particularly the significance of yellow flashes? How about Space Ace? The Panic Button is mostly based on the Energize Button from Space Ace.
Is Chatty Cathy the narrator, the one doing green text? I don't think she was ever mentioned by name, at least not in public. I was actually really unsure about whether we even hear the green text, wanted to ask about it eventually. :'D
The Green Text is going to be apparent fairly soon, maybe. But it’s not Cathy. I just wrote her in as an excuse for how Casanova and Kurumi know the names of people at Pub, now that Blabbit’s away.
Johnny Piano is the game music and Chatty Catchy is the exposition / IC knowledge.
Green text… it’s OoC knowledge, but feel free to have your character get a vague feeling from whatever it says. Dig Doug was being influenced by the words.

I actually rolled the 19!
(Calling the beer "Root Beer" is a reference to Root Beer Tapper, which was the sequel to Tapper. Same game, but with A&W as the sponsor instead of Budweiser.)
Also, the colored text looks good if you use Dark Mode. On the default white background, my "bright green" text is regular green.

(It deflated by the time I took a picture, but it was a nice little mid-morning surprise!)
(Also, this drink looks delicious.)
And actually, that’s where I really want this game to go: you’re not limited to the options I give you. (The only real limit is Hero attacks and Anti-Hero, which is basically Sprite, defends.)
I’ll let Pira respond before I move that scene forward.

@Legendary_Sidekick where am I and what should I be doing? Kicking a scarecrow's butt?!?
I had you off-camera.
The party is split. Kurumi and Casanova are in the pub (called "Pub"), and Pira and Princess Diamond are in a weird cartoon-game situation. You can barge into either scene.
If you enter the corn maze, I think you need to enter through a wall of corn as destructively as one can through a ten-foot-tall wall of corn stalks. (That would not slow you down in any way if you want to attack the scarecrow.)
Either scene will lead to some sort of "boss fight."
I’ll make a pre-vacation post in the morning, which will move the Corn Maze scene.
@Alepous,@Tickettbror,
If either of you can post tonight or tomorrow, I’ll update the Pub scene accordingly!
Since a hit (1 success) can cause a complication (by normal L&F rules), I thought a 50% chance of the pitchfork falling at a player (if I rolled your player #, the princess’ or Thundra’s) would be a fun visual.
I’ll move every scene forward sometime today. (But my next post after today will be on the 8th.)
@FlyingSucculent,@Dmbrainiac,@Ysolde You don’t need to roll any dice yet, if you’d rather just chat a bit in-game. Up to you, but assuming you don’t flee, I’ll have a fight for you vs. Baba Yaga’s Hut I mean… A Chicken Coop With Chicken Feet That Is Totally Not Baba Yaga’s Hut.
Anyway, safe travels! :D
Also, have one of my favourite Baba Yaga versions! It's from a children movie where two kids save the granddaughter of Grandad Frost from a folkloric necromancer. Baba Yaga here is a member of a music band with two other fairy tale creatures. :D In this clip she's pretending to be a kind forest fairy while also kinda singing about how she wants to cook children. It's a fun movie.
And here are all three of the music band villains during a chase! Kid me loved this song, and I'd say I still do. Sadly I don't think there is a version with subtitles, but the gist of the song probably is understandable. XD

My daughters just discovered something that was common when I was their age… but I never knew Burger Time had a sequel.

My two older daughters saved the princesses by making burgers and throwing burgers at the king!

Here’s the bike trail:

(Oooh, water, a lot of water. :O)
(Oooh, water, a lot of water. :O)

@FlyingSucculent, Sorry for treading that line (or did I step over it?) on good people being under bad guy control. I trusted the players not to harm the villagers. And I also had a plan so no one would have gotten hurt regardless of actions or unlucky dice, since my understanding is that you don’t want:
• good people (PC or NPC) being forced to do harm
• players trapped in a situation where you have to harm the innocent
My problem with mind control is not mind control itself, but a very specific kind of mind control which makes the controlled feel positively about the controller. Love potions, switching sides while believing that you were always on that side, being physically brainwashed into loyalty. I don't think it applies to lycanthropy. Unless this whole pack business is a cult? That... would be indeed a little questionable.
As for the innocents and being forced to do harm, that's not a problem at all. You might be thinking of me mentioning that I don't like PCs attacking opponents unable to defend themselves, but that's just that. Doesn't matter if innocent or not, just no one-sided fights, please. Like if the enemy is disarmed, and a PC goes to kick them? That, I don't like that.

Love potions and forced love won’t come up because I also hate that.
Also the bike trail reminds me of the crossing to Lindasfarne island in Northumbria, since it's right on the North Sea and depending on what time of day you go the tide completely swallows the road (and you can't cross.) It's a beautiful place and if you ever find yourself in the North of the UK I recommend going. :3

And lovely art, Alepous! I especially like the outfit. <3
Yeah, I love the art! Not just Kurumi, but Fren and the blacksmith too in the other game. I feel inspired—I want to go back to my pencil/paper roots instead of fully digital.
@Tickettbror
Nice trail, too! I guess you need to be mindful of the tide if you want to make the return trip. Our 28-mile ride had a different risk: the Bike Ferry stops running at 5:00. We got there after 4:40, but there was a large crown and the boat can only take 20 passengers. My family was passengers #15-19, so the couple behind us was not so lucky.
The ride from ferry to bike-rental-place is 10 miles. Having to backtrack and take the bridge is almost 20 miles.
@FlyingSucculent
You ninja’d me! I added a small bit at the start of my megapost.
My other ideas for what game to run were called "Cartoon Peril" and "Fairy Princess Crush." Princess Diamond is basically giving me a taste of both of the games I didn’t run!

I won’t implement any of the changes now, but they are ideas I could never have come up with without running this version with real players (and several times saying, "Bah •CENSORED•, I shoulda…!").
Whether I ever actually run the version I’m documenting or I move on to the next weird experiment, seriously, thank you all for being part of this and for the way you’re playing your characters!
The only thing I'm really struggling with is the pacing, but I'm reserving my judgement on it until we finish Level 2. Plus it's just a preference either way! Although I do wish we had some situations where our characters could just talk to each other without something simultaneously happening around them (well, except some slight peril because Diamond :P).
Although this might just be me, since the games I play usually are much less action-packed.
And on the other hand, there was something in place from the beginning of this level which might come into play a little earlier than planned. (And how it comes into play depends on your decision.)
I’m the same with downtime. If downtime is playing out and engaging players, I’ll gladly let downtime RP happen. If the game seems like everything is paused, I’m going to unpause the game.
I could also schedule when Level 3 will start after Level 2 is finished—like the Tuesday after, for example. And in that case, you would know downtime RP can happen without interruption. (Or you know the interruption will happen on a specific day.)

I have a setting that is intended for downtime RP. You’re moving toward it (whether you pass the corridor or take the spiral stairs).
I think I struggle not so much with the lack of downtime itself, as with its combination with the fast place. I see a post, start thinking of how to react to it that would be character-themed, but by the time I check again we have already moved to a different location. And this causes a constant fear that if I don't reply immediately I won't get a chance to reply at all.
It begins to feel more like a dungeon crawler, and while I do like them too, I would've made a completely different character for it so inactivity and silence isn't wildly OOC. Hmm, maybe I should switch characters.
Anyway, I'm not trying to critique, I'm just trying to explain why I'm struggling. :'D Sometimes it's just good old "playstyles don't match", but I think it's worth to try and explain before giving up completely.
Brainiac, I love the image. Even the gridwork implies you’re in a triangular prism-shaped corridor. (Not at the acute angle I pictured, but still, it’s an important detail and the AI image emphasizes how a fairy-sized character has plenty of room to go up.)

…and my eyes went directly to…

…though I woulda called her FIERY GIRL.
I even made my own color palette so I can draw characters that match the colors on this site (in Dark Mode).

I won’t say what the game is yet because there’s still time for me to change my mind several times… and it’ll be more fun to announce with art, if the drawings come out nicely.
Nothing against green though. I almost used a free palette that sorta had those colors plus a few greens.

While I’m not big on the blue:yellow ratio, I like 24- or 28-color palettes, so I have room for black and white (and maybe a few grays).
Also, this second palette is weird with its 1-6 and 2-5 colours. I do see the difference between them, but they are still way too similar, in my opinion - at least for a palette where all other hues are more distinct? Although 3-6 and 4-4 might be leaning into the same problem. Maybe you can swap those for yellows!

Your action was still helpful even with the miss. Rather than explain, I’ll post in-game later.

@Alepous: Do you want to remain Sprite or shall I? We only need one and you might have a better chance at hitting a Hero roll.

It was the second-most blatant rip-off at that arcade.
The one that topped it:

Okay, so Kurumi is staying on board to sprinkle dust and I can start this boss-fight proper, with only one blow landed on the big fish.
I’ll try to have the post up on the weekend.
@Alepous, from this OoC chat it’s pretty clear you’re dusting the ship. If you do get a chance to post before I do, here’s a sneak peek at the result:
@FlyingSucculent fixed now!!

—but sharp at the tips.
(Since there’s no killing in this game, the skulls don’t belong to anyone. They’re just part of the cartoon shoe.)
…and at 30’ tall, a human would be like a Barbie doll, so that’s the ideal size for impaled skulls. (Edited her size accordingly.)
@Ysolde don’t break the streak. Uh.. no pressure.

Also she looks a little less pink, although that might be the image quality on the previous one. I like the pose! :O
I always catch my screw-ups the next day.
@Ysolde no harm done! The roll should be Antihero, but all that does is change the color of hit/miss. Rolling 2 or higher is a miss, which is GOOD on Antihero rolls.
The action/narrative is still good. Well say you felt pain though you didn’t actually lose HP. I’ll post later or tomorrow morning.
Save it for when someone falls in battle. It will still heal a downed player. (The item will stay there until eaten.)
Next game, I’ll just call the actions DEFEND, ATTACK and probably STUNT and MAGIC for things that are neither defense nor attacks.
Unrelated: I’m cooking the real-life Matoroid right now!

You can see its "eyes," top right pizza, closest to foreground/pan-edge.
Also, pizza! And a vegetarian one, from the looks of it? (Except the Matoroid, lol.) Looks delicious, I want a piece. :V
I’ll post tomorrow.
Not to talk too much about the next game, but if I do label moves as Attack, Defend, etc., I would actually have the results’ language tied to the type of roll. So miss/hit/combo would be attacks-only. I guess stunts could just be success/failure and defense might say something like ‘you get hit’ or ‘they miss’… not like I coded anything yet.
Yes, a vegetarian pizza: pesto sauce, tomatoes and mozzarella/parmesan/fire-jack cheese on a Stone Kitchen bread thing. Most of the tomatoes were store-bought, but having one of our own in the mix was nice. The rabbits usually put huge bites in them while they’re still green.
You are great at dice codes! It really is one of the advantages of PbP, that you can just streamline determining the result. Also you should totally have something like a super-fancy ultimate move which can get a very ostentatious result design. (Ultra combo looks appropriately epic; that, but multiply by ten!)
Yum! :O The pizza, not the rabbits. My local delivery places don't really have a lot of vegetarian stuff, so it's like a choice between Margherita and Hawaiian most of the time. And I'm not touching the latter, because pineapples don't belong on a pizza. (Fist-fight me about it. >:€)
Please board the ship (Pinky), and once you’ve chosen the seat*, I’ll create a Level 3 thread!
*(Brainiac definitely knows where I got the idea for the six-seat ship. Anyone else happen to know?)
I know a downtime has been requested. So we can have that break once you take out the Materoids.
As for the lollipop, video game logic says you can’t hold a healing item. You gobble it up. I’ll have Hero Sword Guy do that so Thundra has full HP.
You guys had amazing luck in defense, attack rolls were high, and to top it off you got the only item that heals multiple heroines. I’m glad this happened in the Level 2 boss fight instead of the final boss!
My oldest daughter drinks almond milk and eats oat-milk ice cream, and the taste has grown on her. But she was preteen when she had to alter her diet and it’s a mild case of lactose intolerance. (She’s lactose barely-tolerant?) Hopefully, you likewise found some treats (and of course, meals) that suit your tastes and fit your dietary needs.
Please read (or skip to the poll and make an uninformed vote)…
…and that you should say that👇
Before I build a wall-o’-text, let me clarify: if you guys WANT to stick to L&F for this game, we can do that. I’m not trying to hard-sell you.
It just feels wrong to have spent the past month or so on a video-gamey system and not tell you. Because I think it’s a better fit for this game, and you guys get some say over your stats so you’re not stuck at being bad at attacking, bad at defending or so-so at both.
Here’s Fairy Girl as an example.
GIRL: FAIRY GIRL
ITEM: ✨✨✨✨
ROLL: 🕹️:3D ㊙️:2D ☢️:2D
LIFE: 💛💛💛
Reason | ㊙️ FIGHT. | ☢️ SHOOT. |
ATTACK | d6 | d6 |
Reason | 🕹️DODGE! | ㊙️ BLOCK. |
DEFEND | d6 | d6 |
Reason | 🕹️STUNT! | ☢️ MAGIC. |
SPECIAL | d6 | d6 |
I just did that for a character I created.

The roll table automatically updates when you change your stats. Also, while I haven’t yet finished the Item Descriptions, note that whatever you name your character auto-populates the item description.
I just figured out how to do that yesterday, and today, I figured out how to do a weird mathy thing that gives some characters a tiny advantage with a couple stats—but not a game-breaking difference.

Every roll of 5 or 6 is a hit, like Tiny D6, but still with the combo system I’ve been using. Supers and Ultras will be rare. There’s a 1% chance of rolling an ultra.
The rolls marked with an exclamation point (DODGE! and STUNT! for the fairy) are the two rolls the character should be exceptionally good at. A fairy is tiny and winged, so whenever Fairy Girl’s dice are all <3 (yes, because the expression looks like a heart), she gets a hit.
Toony Girl will get the <3 bonus in Defense, because all you ever do in a cartoon game is react. Peppy gets the bonus in specials because she’s a dancing magical girl. Kicky Girl gets a boost to the Secret Button (㊙️), fighting and blocking. (It pains me that she uses a block button instead of blocking with the joystick.) Spacy is best with the Nuke Button (☢️), which is shooting and… well, engineering=magic, right? Barby of course is best at Attack!
The <3 makes you more likely to hit, but the bonus diminishes as you level up your stats.
Dice | Hit | <3! |
1 | 33% | 67% |
2 | 56% | 67% |
3 | 70% | 74% |
4 | 80% | 81% |
By design, the bonus only matters when you have 1 or 2 dice in whatever you’re supposed to be good at. (You can level up, but I won’t get into that unless 3+ players vote to swap to this system.)
I decided to ask now because I think Pinky will be especially interesting if we have these controls available for the spaceship scene:
• The Pilot and Copilot can Dodge, do Stunts or ram other ships (FIGHT).
• Gunners have lasers (㊙️) and missiles (☢️). Lasers can be used in a dogfight (FIGHT) but they can also be used to BLOCK, by shooting asteroids for example.
• Engineers can work their MAGIC to repair the ship, activate force fields (BLOCK) or pull some crazy STUNT that might involve an agile mind, dexterous fingers and duct tape.
But that’s my opinion. Please respond to the poll so I know yours!
Which System for Next Level?
Although if we switch, may I ask you to please not edit my sheet? I'd much rather you give me the code and I edit it in myself. I know it's not a big deal, but I just don't like GMs editing my sheets. :'D
The tiny spoiler of pixie dust item being used for an ability looks fun!
Although if we switch, may I ask you to please not edit my sheet? I'd much rather you give me the code and I edit it in myself. I know it's not a big deal, but I just don't like GMs editing my sheets. :'D
I'm not the best at coding, but we only learn by trying right? XD
EDIT ME
[_=EDIT ME]
But next to that underscore, you name it. So here’s the character sheet code for Fairy Girl;

Whatever number you enter for "joy" is how many D6’s you roll for DODGE and STUNT. The "_gal=" allows me to use the "_$=gal" feature for your character’s name when I add the item descriptions.
—which I’ll work on, now that I got three votes.
And here’s the entire code for gameplay:

Above, I sort the dice so the highest result is your last die. This is important since two of your stats give you a hit when all of your dice are <3.
Below is where I code the hit or miss, dependent on whether your stat has an "!" or a "."

And this last part gives you 1-4 hits depending on how many green numbers you roll.

I think it makes more sense to start everyone with 2D in everything at Level 1. Even levels, you add to ITEM or LIFE. Odd levels, you add +1D to any ROLL. (It works out so that there is always a choice, but in a simple, Paper-Marioish way.)
I’ll start you at level 3, which means you’ll get to add either a 💚 or an item, and you can mark one stat as 3D.
I’ll finish writing up the item descriptions before we start Level 3. Feel free to enjoy the long-awaited downtime-RP before the 💩 hits the fan.
I think the character sheet’s format is coming out okay.

At Level 4, for example, Toony Girl will choose one:
• add a 🧡
• get a 🔑 to unlock a 🔒’d ability
Speaking of which—@Ysolde have you ever played Thirsty Sword Lesbians? If so, and if you’re familiar with the Nature Witch, one of the unlockable moves is heavily inspired by her spell, which is in my opinion, the best move in any TTRPG I have ever played. Maybe it’s more my interpretation of what the move does, but anyway…

…this is a move I used to turn gravity sideways, and also used to affect a lake so the water was breathable but not swimmable, and the air over the water was swimmable but not breathable (just for my character. A Nature Witch would not want to accidentally drown innocent woodland creatures, and not just because they were excellent informants in that scene). I think a cartoon character taking control of the cartoon world would be able to do this—effectively, rewrite one law of nature.
The starting move will still be a Dexter-to-Space Ace sorta thing, and I think a Time Gal type move will be the other move. I like the idea of pausing a game to cheat (move while the enemies can’t) as a limited-use move. You can’t hurt paused enemies or break paused things, but you can sneak away. And I suppose a simple manipulation could be allowed since Time Gal did defeat Laughing Guy by rotating his swivel chair during a time-stop.
If you watch the whole thing, you might be surprised to see how Time Gal’s failures are different from Dirk the Daring’s.
You might not be.

I updated your sheet. Leveling instructions will eventually follow.
But if you want to play around with your character sheet now, you’re Level 3. So you can do the level 2 and level 3 thing now.
• Level 1: rename TOONY GIRL.
• Level 2: add a 🚨 or a 🧡.
• Level 3: add +1D to 🕹️, ㊙️ or ☢️.
Oh and I played the game but not that class. I really want the keys now though
@FlyingSucculent I’m quite proud of the graphic for P4! Being a fighting game character, Kicky Girl has the only item that requires a die roll. The 👠Outrageous Heels moves are a combination of two stats, meaning at game-start, Pira will roll 4 or 5 dice for her button-mash attack.

Since the instructions are for everyone, there’s a field to add in the names for other players.
She could use:
• a Co-Pilot
• a Gunner or two
• and an Engineer or Two
Everyone take a seat and read the flight instructions so you know how to fly, shoot, or not get blown to bits!
Casanova and her Co-Pilot: Pira
Control | Function |
㊙️ FIGHT | ramming speed |
🕹️ DODGE | evasive maneuver |
🕹️ STUNT | navigate a dangerous obstacle |
☢️ MAGIC | full speed ahead; cost = 🚀* |
The Gunner(s): Thundra
Control | Function |
㊙️ FIGHT | fire lasers at the enemy |
☢️ SHOOT | launch a missile; cost = 🚀 |
㊙️ BLOCK | fire lasers at a missile |
Full Round | reload one 🚀, if empty** |
The Engineer(s): Princess Diamond
Control | Function |
㊙️ BLOCK | activate the force field |
☢️ MAGIC | repair damage***; cost = 🚀 |
🕹️ STUNT | do something nerdy and clever |
Full Round | reload one 🚀, if empty |
—is Casanova’s LIFE bar!
Don’t let the ship go down with her captain!
Reloading might be difficult to optimize. If reload is only available when there are zero rockets, how would that work with turn order? Let's say we have 🚀🚀 at turn start. Casanova and Pira both boost for 🚀🚀, making it 0 rockets. Does this mean Diamond and Thundra can reload now, or will they have to wait for next turn? Or can Diamond reload and then Thundra launch a missile?
I suggest when we get to fighting, everyone posts current number of 🚀 at the end of their posts for easier tracking.
RELOAD
We’ll have to see how the rocket ride plays out because y’know, theory and practice. But the intent is to make it impossible for the engineer to spam the ship-repair button.
You’ll only have a 🚀 or 🚀🚀, and possibly a third later. So pilots, gunners and engineers all deplete that supply by one 🚀 every time they press ☢️.
The pilot may need to move very fast at times. The gunner might need missiles because Pinky is overwhelmed or there’s a giant robot whose hull is made entirely of mirrors. (If Space Ace and Time Gal taught me anything, it’s that even an end-boss should not shoot a laser at a mirror.)
When you need to reload, it takes the full round to do that. In my head, I’m picturing a girl struggling to move a huge cartoony rocket. Thundra handles it with care. Fairy Girl sprinkles pixel dust to float it into place. For whatever reason, it takes any character just as long as video-game-logic forces you to… well, you get the idea.
So anyway…
• Round 1, you use the last 🚀.
• Round 2, someone reloads (or two people if Casanove increases her max 🚀s to 2).
• Round 3, someone can press ☢️ at the cost of a 🚀.
I have no idea how this will play out but my hope is that you’ll all come up with a strategy or communicate as a team. As GM, I’ll be responsible for tracking HP and items.

You then need to wait yet-another turn to use the new 🚀s.
The update means everyone has a 56-81% of rolling at least a hit, so you can expect a majority of the rolls to land favorably, but not all. For my posts, the only time I’ll tell you how to DEFEND is when an attack should be either impossible to block or impossible to dodge.
Examples: most attacks can be blocked or dodged, so I expect you to roll whichever has more dice (or an !, if the dice are the same). A Full-Screen Fart-Cloud can’t be dodged, so you gotta BLOCK your nose. A steamroller cannot be blocked, so in a GM post I’d say,
M. Kangaroo fires up his Steampunk-Punkroller—he’s gonna run Pira down in the parking lot!
🕹️DODGE to get outta the way, Pira!
I feel like that sounds better than "roll 1D antihero." And also, denying you a block-or-dodge choice has to follow some logic, like a steamroller is believably impossible to block. So you know I’m not just being a dick and forcing Pira to roll her dump stat.
Magic and Shoot both use the ☢️ button, so if you want to cast harmful magic, press Shoot and narrate a fireball instead of an arrow. It doesn’t matter to me whether your characters use fist, blade, arrow, laser, magic or thrown-flaming-car. (Except only Thundra should throw a car with the Shoot button.)
Qralloq has expressed interest in playing fairy girl!
Also, I would like to make this game public since a lot of people have asked me about it.
Definitely keep the downtime RP up… I want to polish those character sheets and move them to the creation thread before we start Level 3 proper.
You have a ground kick that works well as the ㊙️☢️ special. The wave punch works as the 🕹️☢️, and the aerial kick should replace the legendary sidekick (🕹️㊙️).
Please enter the code as is (though without erasing the parts of the character sheet you wrote), and edit the parts of the sheet with gray underscores.
I mean like these parts:

…but on your sheet, you can also edit ability names. (It’s a separate field from the lock.)
There is certain language on the roll table that must remain as-is, such as the word "ATTACK!" where your special attacks are. An yes, those need to remain below the Abilities section. Please don’t rearrange anything.
(And I'm certainly hiding a bunch of OOC posts.)
Is it fine if I keep my avatar in a second column alongside stats/roll table (like it is now)? It shouldn't break anything as column tags don't affect the order.
Your sheets are completed, but I’m sitting in them because I need to tweak a couple things.
@Tickettbror I’m going to alter your char-sheet so Team Rocket can be edited (to Pinky, of course). Kicky Girl naming her moves and Spacy Girl naming her ship are important features.
So what about the avatar thing?
A read is fine. I was buying time for the fairy-girl player to post, but it seems we got to the action on page 2. The party split, but that won’t happen in Level 3 since you’ll all be on a ship.
Fairy warning: I’ll update the code for this game sometime next week, which means the die rolls in the Lv.2 thread will no longer denote success/failure.
@FlyingSucculent speaking of code, the two-column thing you want to do on your character sheet should be fine. Basically, any addition that doesn’t rearrange what I wrote won’t cause any issues (with obvious exceptions like a missing [/f]).
My only suggestion is that you keep the roll tables easily accessible because the code that displays MISS / 💥HIT / 💥💥COMBO is looking for specific words and punctuation marks. (And I also think it’s convenient for you, the players, if you don’t need to remember your stats. Just press DODGE and FIGHT, if that’s how you want to act in a combat round.)
First to try at an image... Might adapt later today.

I’ll get a post up so Luna can hitch a ride on Pinky, the P5’s starship. Not today though—I’m about to drive my wife and daughters all over the place.
Do I get to do these now (except with a heel)? :>
• Level 2: add a 🚨 or a 🧡.

🕹️㊙️ PIRANHA SWING! - (5d6)
(53254) = 19
She was awesome. Seriously… low-level armor and always the sole survivor even with other players 25 levels above me. (I may have unwittingly set off lightning enchanted enemies, which didn’t hurt me, but anyway…)
So you have this Amazon. She kicks ass. But what am I doing? I’m constantly dressing her up, and what’s the next step after finally collecting all of the Angel Armor set? Why, bedazzling my armor with the perfect diamond, of course!
So Barby Girl/Thundra’s female armor is based more on this than say, Monster Hunter. The writers of Barbaric Commando can wait for players to reach level 6 to earn Queen Hippo’s Wrestling Sash. But the artists made it a pink bow, which wraps up the PC like a Tiffany’s gift box!
So your level-up instructions are this:
THUNDRA THE THICC
Lv.3
Level 1: Rename BARBY GIRL!
Level 2: Add 👗 to your ITEM slot,
~OR~ add 🩵 to your LIFE bar.
Level 3: Add +1D to 🕹️, ㊙️ or ☢️.
Pira is all about insane combos.
Kurumi is all about movement and inspiration.
Where I felt I had failed was here: Peppy Girl is a celebration of the music in games. So I put some time and thought into how to get her item abilities on-theme, and I think I finally nailed it. I’ll do the rewrite and sit on it a little more.
@Dmbrainiac One quick note for you: armor is better than a 🩵, but you can heal 🩵s. Any armor that you sacrifice or remove is gone until the start of a new level.
I personally feel that +ITEM (or +🔑 at Lv.4) is the better choice, but adding hearts to your LIFE bar is an option at every even #’d level.
Character sheets are DONE!!! Please follow the leveling-up instructions. (Admittedly, a clunky post. I want a more video-gamey presentation for Lv.4.)
I’ll give everyone the rest of the day to keep RP going. Anyone in the pilot or engineer seat can get Luna on board. (Even though Casanova hasn’t unlocked the Beam yet, we can let engineers beam the fairy up.)
I might have found some inspiration while I was here…

Oh! And I never did answer the question of where I got the idea for the ship having 2 pilots, 2 gunners and 2 engineers. How Pinky works is loosely based on the Millennium Falcon ride at Disneyworld. It is effectively a video game. Gunners button-mash and each have one missile. Engineers are basically the party healers. My daughters were the pilots both times, and they crashed a lot. (Hence, the Ramming Speed button on Pinky, so at least in this game crashing can be on purpose.)
I played a racing game, and I used the Nitro button to speed up and ram other cars. (I think the game had a 360-spin button that was actually meant for ramming, but Nitro worked a lot better.) Anyway, I won 1st place* thanks to my reckless driving!
*(but the cheapskates set the machine so you don’t get the next race for free if you win 1st—BOOOooo...!)
I've levelled up Cassanova, assuming I did everything right... let me know. :3
Also, since you leveled-up, that means you have TWO 🚀s max, so there’s still one remaining! I updated the status update.
I plan to post tomorrow if your post is up. Or if you need me to hold off another day or two, please let me know, Tickettbror. I love how you created Pinky, and now she’s a major part of the game, so I don’t want to move ahead without you.
I’ll leave the specific look up to our Space Commander!
It’s the first day of school for teachers, so I’ll write a post when I can. I’m fine with botting this round, but I did want to ask first.
Well, anyway… my wife gave me errands right as I posted that. I’ll add more later tonight in a separate post.
The rule was written for a reason. If engineers can work it so one heals the ship and someone else reloads, and you can do that every round, I can never crash the ship. I don’t want to crash the ship. But I do want it to be possible.
So why be flexible? Letting an engineer reload in a round in which a 🚀 was not used still means you can’t heal and reload one round after another.
But now that I’ve allowed that, there’s nothing stopping someone from using a 🚀 first and then another player immediately reloads in the same round. If that happens, I’ll keep the LOADING screen lit up for an additional round. (And because I’m flexible, yes, someone could still load the other 🚀 while the load-screen is lit.)
Sadly, this flexible side is me as a teacher.

And ye, ants can be a problem, can relate. The house my parents' apartment is at used to have them as a major issue for ten or so years, and I always felt bad upon seeing them in my coffee. D: You'd think they'd learn not to go near mugs eventually.
(I don't think being inflexible at times is necessarily a problem. Sometimes you just gotta stick to the plan! And this rule sounds pretty reasonable.)
Let’s just ditch the load screen so Luna can opt to heal now, if @Qralloq wants to. That seems to be how Ysolde thought it would work, so no harm in tweaking the rule to what players already thought it was anyway.

Also, the battle is rapidly becoming Dance Dance Revolution. I like it. XD
Let’s see how Thundra’s luck influences the round’s outcome…!
…I did consider what missing all three means!
Anyway, ten hours later, I changed the music to the track I couldn’t find outside a full OST. I absolutely loved the music in the Aliens arcade game. I may be biased because I loved the movie.
I just discovered a retro/Contra clone that takes my idea and makes it way more awesome and gross—because instead of vegetable robots, the enemy is MEAT robots.
The Polygon Trail’s name is, of course, based on The Oregon Trail. But in my head it’s also a reference to early 3D/polygon games. Whether by "early" I mean Star Fox or Battlezone is open to interpretation. (In my head, the scenery in this game is like in Wreck-It Ralph… everything looks a lot more ‘real’ inside the game.)
The original plan was a five-level game.
That’s still the plan, in a way, but the number will be higher because I’m splitting a couple levels so you can level-up both before and after the ‘ship’ levels.
• Lv.4 - The Polygon Trail
• Lv.5 - Aboard Pinky again, but with a twist so it’s different than Lv.3
• Lv.6 - I ain’t telling
• Lv.7 - Retrovania
The total number of hearts, items, keys and dice should be the same for everyone. I marked a 4️⃣ for anyone who hasn’t leveled up to Lv.4 yet.
@Legendary_Sidekick does that grant access to all of them? And if one is locked, can she still use the other ones?
When you get hit, you choose whether you lose 🩵s, 👙 or 👗. Normally, I expect you would only take the hit to armor if damage is -🩵🩵 or more.
But let’s say you Miss on Defend and damage is -🩵🩵🩵 hit. You choose to sacrifice the 👗 so you don’t lose any health. And while you’re at it, you decide to morph into a vegan giantess (because sacrificing the dress is the condition).
Now your armor is 👙🍄. You not only did not lose three hearts. You also still have two pieces of armor. And you’re huge, which at the very least makes enemies more smashable to you.
You can lose the 👙 before you lose the 🍄, and if you take -🩵🩵🩵🩵 damage and decide you want to stay big (Luma can fully heal the party between battles), you can choose to take the hit to health and never give up your form until the level ends!
So yes, the ability is once-per-level, but it’s effectively one extra piece of armor with benefits that you can keep for the entire level if you want to.
Would you like me to add a 📀, so you can possibly use that move twice? (You get either that or an add’l 🩷 for level 2, but so far, NOBODY picked the health increase over the alternative.)
Also, you get an extra die— +1D to 🕹️, ㊙️ or ☢️.
But anyway, a post will happen… eventually.

I can’t actually sit through these, but I was curious about what happens when you win Double Dragon as Marion.
May you live happily forever, Marions.
Ye, my waifu is a teacher and she started again yesterday. It was a shock to go to full time work program from the holiday break. Heh.
My youngest is in secondary school now, so I don’t have that long stretch of after-school free time like I did last year (in the parent pick-up line at her former elementary school). I somehow found time in my "free" period to post Lv.4. Hopefully, it’s coherent.
The fun part about this level is I need to be Aliens-inspired but follow the no-killing rule.
Nah, I kid. I would never ask you to RP such naïvety.
I’m kidding… but that Spaceballs scene is equivalent to how ridiculous my actual plots are, so it’s for the best that I explicitly said "kidding."

Also, the tipping posts are a fun read! Glad the dice were favorable. (Apologies to Cass and Diamond if I just jinxed your collective luck by acknowledging it.)
I don’t think I’m giving anything away by saying that, in my next post, the harmless, unimportant banter among background characters will take a turn for the harmfully-important.
In the meantime I'll get on this when I get a clear patch!
I’ll try and make that post today though…
I can hold off a bit, see if there’s a ‘clear patch’ for a Cass post in the next few days, then in either case I’ll make a post Monday or Tuesday.

Posting that to make up for three days ago when I forgot to post that it was the 25th anniversary of the Dreamcast release. I was always a Nintendo guy, but I gotta hand it to my Dreamcast. It’s the only video game console I ever owned that caught fire while being played, and still worked for two more years.
I hope the backstory I went for works.
My big post is ready to drop, but I’ll wait for the weekend to pass and drop it on Monday (and just drop a little one now).
..
Also, no apology necessary (especially for being sick). I’m more than happy to support that, hence my decision to slow down, albeit with a timeline so the game isn’t paused for a week.
My unfortunate experience has been that the games that pause for a week rarely unpause.
Also, belated cheers for the videogame day!
PS: also, I'm content with long pauses if need be!
Anyway, feel free to get another response in, everyone, even after the Roll-For-Initiative happens. Basically the "game" has some cutscenes full of outdated/unrelatable "jokes" that happen before the Excuse for Call to Action. Your characters could be lost in their own conversation in the time it takes for the third cutscene, then suddenly catch on when the **** hits the fan. (Or as Cass might say, "💩💥🪭.")
I’ll run out first battle sorta tutorialishly, but for now, a heads-up:
ROLL FOR INITIATIVE
Monday, we’ll roll for init. It could be 🕹️DODGE to get outta the way of a surprise attack, it could be ㊙️FIGHT to get into a fighting stance, it could be ☢️MAGIC… in other words, any of you could have "the good-initiative stat," depending which of the six moves applies in a particular scene.
Then I’ll set the scene on Probably-Wednesday. I don’t want losing the initiative-roll to mean you have to wait. Instead, the consequence for a MISS on initiative will be immediate. It might be you lose a 💜, it might be you get one less action in the first round.
TWO ACTIONS PER ROUND
When we go into combat rounds, you normally post one or two actions: ATTACK, DEFEND or SPECIAL.
If you get attacked, your two actions will likely be DEFEND and then ATTACK to hit back.
If you don’t need to defend, you may choose to just ATTACK, but you could also perform a SPECIAL move (stunt/magic) or do both: use a STUNT to leap- or sneak-attack. Use MAGIC to enhance your attack. Like for Luna, SHOOT + MAGIC could be kind of Ninja Throwing-Snowflake, which freezes the target and makes the ground around the target slippery! (If both rolls HIT or COMBO.)
But there’s a consequence for a MISS. If you combine STUNT or MAGIC with a ATTACK, there’s a risk that one roll will miss and undermine the roll that doesn’t miss.
ITEM USE
If you want to use an item, you can do that in addition to the one-or-two rolls. Items are limited and you can’t replenish them (until we start a new level), so there’s no reason to have other limits.
Plus, for Pira, it feels more like SFiii Chun-Li if she attacks first, then unleashes a super combo! But if you do this, make sure the ATTACK didn’t MISS before you roll an 👠Outrageous Heels move.
You don’t want THIS to happen:
The two actions gotta be different types. Reason being, I noticed in my Tiny D6 game I always rolled two attacks. I’d rather see you guys use magic or a stunt to enhance an attack. If the stunt/magic seems like something that should function as a linear/area attack, that could be more interesting than attacking twice while accomplishing a similar goal.
Tactically speaking, we should all protect Diamond. She has ☢️ as the main stat, so she can ATTACK + SPECIAL at 3d6 both, while others will have one of these at 2d6. As long as she doesn't have to defend, she is the most effective fighter with two actions (ignoring item effects).
I'm not saying we should do this, I'm just saying that dice-wise it's probably optimal. XD
PS: technically probabilities are also skewed by ! vs . roll distinctions, but I don't know what these are for all characters. If someone has ! on an ATTACK and a SPECIAL, we should protect them too.
The !s are—
Fairy = 🕹️
Toony = DEFEND
Peppy = SPECIAL
Kicky = ㊙️
Spacy = ☢️
Barby = ATTACK
…
My thought is that if you combine a regular ATTACK with 👠SHREDDING FURY, it’s like Chun-Li doing her punch/kick combo before using her super move.
If you MISS, it’s like when Chun-Li’s opponent blocks. The super kicks chip away at the opponent’s health bar, doing less damage, but not none.
If you HIT or COMBO, then roll SHREDDING FURY, it’s the same as Chun-Li doing a combo and linking that to a super combo. It hurts more.
…
Bear in mind, in a Street Fighter game, you would know whether you hit or miss before you decide to use the super. Likewise, in this game, you can decide to whether to use your 👠 after you know the result of your attack roll.
👠👠Piranha Swing is your boss-clobbering attack.
Also, since it auto-targets the boss after hitting minions, if you were to roll an attack and the p.swing…
Rolls
P4 - Pira the Piranha: ATTACK - ㊙️ FIGHT! - (3d6)
(166) = 13
P4 - Pira the Piranha: 🕹️㊙️ 🔑 PIRANHA SWING! - (5d6)
(14325) = 15
Her sidekick needs to go through 2 minions and 1 wall, before hitting the boss with an unimpressive 1 damage.
Then there’s the back kick:
As the kick connects, she follows up with a back kick that’s just as damaging as the kick that smashed through every flunkie and barrier!
🕹️➡️⬇️↘️ ㊙️
Cost | 👠👠 |
Effect | roll 5d6 vs. the boss and whoever or whatever gets in your way |
Duration | one action |
So the boss takes 6 damage total in this case, despite the bad roll!
(But had the Pirahna Swing missed completely, it would have been zero damage to the boss! The sidekick has to connect for the back kick to happen.)
What if there is nothing on the way to the boss?
Actual Answer: if there are minions, at least one will get in the way. And minions or not, I’ll go miles out of my way to narrate some breakable object(s) to ensure you get more than one point of bonus damage.
…if there’s distance between Pira and the boss, that is.
If you’re within arm’s reach (or leg’s reach) of the boss at the start of your turn, I can’t in good conscience narrate enemies diving into your kicks to protect the boss. They would surround you, making Shredding Fury the better move.
*Oh yeah… about the Fighting Stance (team-initiative) rolls! I did three test rolls with 14 d6s, and in all three tests, my rolls were exactly six 5+s. I know the math, that’s average with 18 dice. But the test-dice had spoken. And I thought of lowering it to five, but oh what the heck? They all got lucky on tipping the baristi. They can probably roll two flukes in a row.
Then the first two rolls fighting-stance rolls were MISS and MISS, and I’m like, well… they’re f***ed. It came down to practically coin-toss odds when Cass made the last Fighting Stance post. I was in suspense, and didn’t even prewrite the GM post because that last roll determined whether or not you’d all get jumped!
Hopefully you guys like the crappy-odds Team-Initiative roll. It was fun for me, and yes, suspenseful since I’m always rooting for you even when I throw unfair crap at you (as arcade games tend to do).
In this game, failure just affects the narrative. You won’t die. Losing is *possible* but I would do something more interesting than a TPK. Interesting because you’re all alive and able to recover from the loss. It’s something I don’t think will actually happen, but I’m mentally prepared to run that scenario.
…
That said, I’m taking notes so if I do a second run, there will be tweaks.
Speaking of which, while I was typing this response, my order came in:

…so I can do an IRL run with dice that match each player’s color! (The set even has two pinks, so I can do pale pink OR orange for Toony Girl!)
Also, that’s 110 dice for $7!
@Ysolde, instead of botting the princess, let’s do this: if you MISS on your turn, feel free to re-roll one MISS.
Welcome back!
And I got my answer:

Also, I FINALLY set up a status bar that I can edit on the fly:

If I use 5-letter names and black hearts for lost HP, it’s easier to spot who isn’t "full." Everyone has the same item + life total, so when you’re all full, the graphic display is the same length.
For enemies, I’ll use a Megaman-style bar and the Final Fight red X upon defeat. It’ll be a shared bar rather than tracking every individual enemy’s HP. Basically, the battle is over when the bar is empty.
I hope you recover soon… or soon figure out how.
On an unrelated note, my compliments, @Qralloq, on some of those Fate ideas. I would have sought to join that game had I not just signed up for a Fate game… really loved the idea of PCs as muppets!
I hope things work out for you, whatever’s taking you from us, IRL is always the priority. You hadn’t checked in for a while, so I was mentally prepared for this game to end as a 5- (or possibly 4-) player game.
At any rate, I wish you well. Thank you for playing!
Sincerely,
LS
So I know it’s a weekend, and weekends are by-definition slow-posting/no-posting. But we did lose our princess, and there’s a slow-down… the combination of the two is reminding me why I normally run one-shots.
We’re close enough to the end, that I won’t recruit. If we have enough people still interested in moving forward, my instinct is to move toward the final confrontation sooner rather than later. (Specifically, go back to the original 5-level plan instead of the recent change to a 7-level plan.)
If there’s not enough interest to continue, there won’t be hard feelings. In that case, I’ll put my energy into the next home-brew, which any of you would be welcome to join (even as the same character).
The system itself will have a few tweaks.

No worries… my fault for not addressing it when I noticed earlier.
I know Flying Succulent was concerned over this game being public. I left it private as a result.
But with just the three of you now, are you okay with it if I make this game public?
We are nearing the final confrontation, so up to you all if we have an audience for the last bit..!
The rest of this game has covers, which I’m pretty happy with, especially after comparing them to the originals.
I gave your roll tables a temporary update!

You get one action per turn, and like in a 2P game of Double Dash, you can swap seats with your partner.
Rolling for your Star Vixen partner is up to you (as in, she gets an action either way. If you don’t roll for her, I will).
I’ll make a new thread for the last few parts of the game. Also, attacks and stunts are now DC4 (as in more likely to hit)… or will be after I update the code.
