Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice... (sorry, I couldn't resist)

The group converses to discuss their next move, the newcomers have joined them.

Justice Darkhaven

Justice Darkhaven
"Tarna tells me that you have elected to pursue this case to the very end." The Justice looks over the assemblage of children, hardly older than the girl they are protecting. "I cannot say that I approve, but neither can I stop you. I've a feeling that if I forbade it, you would only go anyway. So be it! Tarna will lead you in your pursuits, taking your advice, and may Tyr be with you all."
May 20, 2024 4:29 am
Killi stands at the back of the group, glaring at the Justice with defiant, ash grey eyes. Every so often, she engages in a behavioral tic, snapping her fingers and sending out a tiny shower of sparks. She didn't like how the Justice acted like her approval *mattered*... as if her acquiescing to allowing her and the others to do as they pleased was somehow her giving them her blessing.

The little mage clicks her teeth and scowls. It doesn't matter. She gets to do what she wants. She gets to help out someone... maybe deal some pain to whoever these "Xanathar" people were. Were they in league with her family? It wouldn't be surprising. It'd be an added bonus if they were. Killi liked the idea of meddling with the Rosznars a little. She smiles.

Being a newcomer to the group, she remains silent and waits for one of the other members suggest a course of action.

No, I appreciate the joke (and pop culture references in general), having grown up with many Hanna-Barbera shows.

Crow was conflicted, his chagrin showed on his face. Why had they made him a weapon? Isn't goodness about forgiveness? He wondered as Justice Darkhaven addressed them.

"Anwyn, should be kept here. Safe with the novices. We are going to fight and she doesn't need to see that."
May 22, 2024 2:19 am
"Agreed, Anwyn needs to be kept safely under watch or we will only be bringing her straight into danger."

He pauses to smile at the girl, "Of course, I'm hoping we'll be able to pop in here and there to visit."

"Tarna, what would you suggest for our next steps?"

Tarna

Tarna
"My recommendation is to try to figure out where the woman went. Maybe we should check the warehouse for secret entrances. If they are working for the Xanathar, I don't believe that they would have left town just yet."
May 24, 2024 7:14 pm
"Fine by me," Killi says with a sadistic smile. "Maybe we can find more thugs who've come looking for you guys," she says, looking at the others. "Someone else to beat some answers out of."
May 24, 2024 10:51 pm
Crow raised an eyebrow and crosses his arms looking to the others for their input. He wanted to know where everyone stood before speaking. So he listened.
May 25, 2024 12:13 am
"She did seem disinclined to leave until they, er, finished their job. " Tom stutters out, with an awkward glance at Anwyn. "Now that we know Anywn is safe, returning to search the warehouse seems a worthwhile risk as they may have left some clue behind. Didn't their original message asked us to meet them within the grave quarter? I also wonder if we may find any signs of them being active there. "
May 25, 2024 5:15 am
Fen steps up to her companions and shrugs as she suggests, "Maybe find smell again?" Clearly she is unsure of herself but would like to help. The previous success of Oshgal finding a scent aligns with Fen’s usual methods of solving problems in the wilds; find a trail and follow it.
May 25, 2024 6:06 am
Crow nodded along with Tom posture stiffend a bit as he bristled at the notion of fighting without the advantage. But his body posture also indicated, as well as his earlier lethaloty proved violence was not something he was against.

Fen and Oshgal could track far better than he could. He liked the odds of picking up the trail. Wherever they went. He relaxed visibly at the notion of subterfugue.

He turned to scrutinize Trig who had kept his peace. Trig could see Crow's mind was working out a plan already. There was a dreadful confidence the young Inquisitor exuded, it was clear whatever training he recieved in The Halls of Justice relied on gathering information, though his uniform was very similar to Tarna's, better cloth and cape. His gaze open and honest, but deep cunning. "And you Trig?" He asked in perfect Gnomish, he even was able to enunciate and emphasize the sibilance of Undercommon, someone from Menzoberranzan had taught him the deep languages if his accent was to be judged.

Crow retrieved the accounts ledger he had left some hours before and clasped it back on his belt. He took a fresh quill and a stoppered bottle of blue and red ink from Justice Darkhaven's desk, it was so casually it wad obvious he had done this before. He replaced the ink with two well uses bottles. He was showing initiative to his superior and strategic thinking. He knew Darkhaven knew whatever decision transpired needed to be codified.
Jun 2, 2024 6:26 am
Trig bows her head in gratitude, acknowledging the effort that Crow is demonstrating at speaking her people's language. "From what you all have told me," Trig replies in Common, shifting her hat to scratch an itch, "It makes sense to go back to the warehouse where she disappeared. That seems like the best lead on finding this 'Aristina' woman." Trig's hat twitches, extends some legs, and settles itself back more firmly on her head. "Actually, that's the only lead. Unless any of us have any contacts that know more about the Xanathar?"
OOC:
It's now clear to everyone that Trig's hat conceals some kind of many-legged creature: a horrifying arachnid or, perhaps more likely, a crustacean of some kind.
Jun 2, 2024 8:50 am
Crow nods emphatically at the notion of returning to the warehouse. "It got very chaotic, I bet with the haste of her flight mistakes were made. And it seems the surer course to seek a trail rather than walk into a certain trap." Blanching when he recalled how utterly helpless he felt when the thugs had attacked with a crossbow at the food carts. "But I bet our trail will lead us to the grave quarter anyway. These guys aren't playing around - and we killed... I killed one of them." Crow switched tack and took accountability for the act. "That ups the ante, and no offense, but we aren't exactly formiddable warriors all." He nodded to Tarna who was a formidable fighter, and his own prodigious athleticism which had lent itself to his ambush. "Eager is good, but discretion is the better part of valor."
Jun 3, 2024 6:30 pm
Tom squints at Trig's hat, tilting his head quizzically.

"I didn't recall the Watch ever mentioning the Xanathar when that name first came up, though I suppose it's possible they know something but they thought it was too dangerous to share it with me."

Tom wracks his memory again trying to remember that name having come up in his father's prior cases or if he's overhead it as being linked to potential suspects.

Even so, nothing that gives us an actionable lead-- if the Xanathar exists, they are too well protected for the Watch to have more than suspicions about who works for them directly. So, I still say we go back and search the warehouse more closely. "
Jun 4, 2024 5:18 pm
Returning to the warehouse, I need everyone searching to make a Perception check. I should have a map for you when I am off vacation.
Jun 4, 2024 7:26 pm
Crow tries to not let the bloodstains bother him as he searches for clues and context. The reminder of them keeps him too distracted to search effectively and he mostly meanders around, looking at the bloodstains periodicaly.

"Yes, I cut him right through his heart." Crow placed his hand over Fen's. Sighing he shook the feeling away oressingit deep down. "They never even knew I was here." Looking to the roof where he had leapt into the fray. He moved to the spot where he had ambushed the first man through the door. His focus piqued as he replayed the scene as he had acted in it. It was relaxing to focus on the act constructively.

"Where did she go? I must have seen or heard her."

Crow climbed up to the roof and jumped back pantomiming the act. Trying to engage his state dependent memory. "Plunge Attack. Lunge. C-Step. Sinistra. Tumble. Stab. Backstep." He pointed directly into the building as he tried to pinpoint where he had heard them conversing as he had eavesdropped on the roof.

Oshgal is the first to pick up a trail and enters the structure without hesitation, following to what would seem to be a blank wall. It is Trig who spots the outline of a secret door! A few seconds later, everyone is staring down a darkened stairway that leads underground. A strong smell emanates from the depths and it is apparent that this leads to the city's sewer system.
Jun 13, 2024 2:33 am
"Great work, Trig!" says Tom as he moves over to study the passageway. "Fascinating, this must have been how the woman I heard who was leading the group managed to escape earlier--we thought we must have just lost sight of her during the fight, but that never felt right. I bet she fled down here rather than exiting the building."

He looks thoughtful for a moment, then steps to the side and begins loading his crossbow. "Though they've abandoned this location, we should probably prepare for the possibility that they're using the sewer system to allow for concealed movement between multiple bases."

"Then as of this moment, we are behind enemy lines."

Crow took the lead, sparking up a torch keeping his rapier in hand he pressed into the sewer tiptoeing as he moved ahead.
Jun 14, 2024 4:50 am
Seeing Tom pull out a crossbow, and Crow raising a rapier, Killi draws a kunai with a bandage wrapped around its grip. She clearly has little idea how to properly use it if a fight actually broke out. Still, she doesn't seem perturbed by that fact as she follows the others into the sewer.

"Can't say I'm used to the sewers... how much ground will we have to cover to find them?" Killi asks. "Do these reach the entire city? Or is this just the sewers under one area?"
Jun 15, 2024 4:00 am
Trig bends down and lifts her hat so that Koko can scuttle back onto her head. Then she straightens up again, puts on her hat, and strings her crossbow with a grunt. "What is it with thieves and sewers, anyway? Can't they smell?" Despite her complaint, she nevertheless moves to follow the others. "In for a nib, in for a sun, I guess." She then takes a deep breath of stale warehouse air and then follows the others down into the absolute rank stench of the sewers.
Jun 16, 2024 6:24 pm
As the group descends the stairs, they find themselves in a wide passage (about 10 feet across) filled knee-deep with slimy brown muck that it is best not to consider where it might come from. The passage goes right and left. To the left, it turns left again after about 15 feet, while the passage to the right continues as far as your light will allow you to see, though it looks like a spur joins from the left about 30 feet down the passage. The smell here is horrible and you suppress a gag that threatens to bring up your last meal. Rats scatter at your approach, squealing their high-pitched cries. Fortunately, all seem to be normal-sized rodents.
Jun 16, 2024 9:29 pm
Crow presses himself along the wall and motionz everyone else to do the sane. Trying to make his profile as small as possible he crept forth as silently as possible. "What are the rats running from?"

Jun 18, 2024 3:51 am
Once the party reaches the bottom level of stairs, Fen swings herself up onto her feline friend's back. She doesn't mind the damp but wants to take up as little combined space in the walkway as possible. "Maybe Oshgal scare them?" Fen suggests quietly, knowing full well there is more to it than that. She pats the cat's neck and asks, "Smell anything?" to see if the feline is able to determine a direction the group should pursue.

The rats appear to be running from your group and scatter in both directions. Oshgal sniffs the air and makes a disgusted face, then sniffs again. It seems she has caught a scent, as she moves slowly to the left.
Jun 21, 2024 2:26 am
The rats' behavior seems natural enough, which is good, but doesn't mean there aren't other threats about that they haven't detected.

"Left it is then?" he asks Fen, trailing behind Oshgal.
Jun 21, 2024 2:29 am
Nodding with solemn quietness, Fen lets Oshgal lead the troupe down the left fork, stroking the cat's neck lovingly as the half-orc hunches low against her mount's back.
Jun 23, 2024 3:36 am
Trig follows the others, squinting at the stench, wincing at the squelching noises, holding her arms up, and grimacing at the feel of the slime that is all the way up to her chest.
Jun 25, 2024 5:41 pm
Crow follows a pace behind Oshgal, reaching down to stroke the cat between her ears as a small comfort. Periodically waving the torch to disperse the malignant odor he forged ahead.
Jul 1, 2024 3:46 am
The party treks through the murky water with determination, eventually reaching a point where another passage intersects from the right. Oshgal makes the right turn, following the scent and taking you past smaller, relatively dry passages to both right and left.
Jul 1, 2024 8:05 am
"A sinister person goes left." Crow whispered and tumbled, minimizing his profile by sprawling to the right and immediately collapsing into a log roll. He sprung somersault as soon as he completed the rotation. Nipping to his feet, pressing up to the blind corner and peeked around it. Displaying once again his superhuman alacrity and grace. His movements even at this range were quicker than the eye. A subtle form of shadow magic? Or was he really that skilled?

Tom follows along far less acrobatically but with a renewed wariness, not thrilled to go jumping about in the sludge himself. Tom follows after Crow to the left. Upon entering the chamber with the pipes, he moves toward the exit in the left wall but doesn't leave the room--he's just trying to get a look at which way the passageway goes.
Jul 16, 2024 3:06 pm
Looking into the right passage, Trig finds that it goes only a short distance before it ends in a room with several crates and barrels. Exploring the passage from the pipes room, Tom finds that it also goes a short distance and ends at a "T" junction, with each arm of the T going only about 10 feet before reaching a dead end. Oshgal presses forward.

With Oshgal hot on the scent trail, you make good time. After several twists and turns, she enters a small room where a ladder leads up to a trap door. A quick attempt to open it proves that it has been barred from above.
Jul 31, 2024 2:55 am
Crow marks the door with an "X" and some chalk. He keeps the chalk in his right hand and stencils an arrow pointed back in the direction he had come from. He reached into his leather bag and produced a pick and tension wrench he grasped them securely in his right hand and proceeded to search for a seam.

Crow begins the dilligent task of disabling the locking mechanism securing the deadbolt. Gently goading the pins within the lock to release the mechanism. Aug 6, 2024 5:42 pm
Crow manages to manipulate the door open and it leads into a basement about 30 feet square. The only visible exit is a staircase going up. The basement is crowded with boxes and barrels.
Aug 8, 2024 12:43 am
Trig looks at Crow with astonished admiration, her mouth agape. "You...you opened that door even though there was no hardware on this side??" She grins. "You're a magic man!" Then she proceeds up the ladder after him. As they look around the boxes and barrels while the others climb the ladder (which probably takes some doing for Oshgal), Trig shoots Crow an occasional glance when he's not looking. "...amazing magic man!" she murmurs to herself with a sappy grin. If Koko could roll its eyes, it would. The crab has seen Trig crush on boys before.

Crow, who wore the holy symbol of the god of paladins seemed an odd paladin. He was also completely oblivious to Trig's awkward flirting. But it wad probable growing up in the temple left Crow even more socially awkward.

It is quite by accident that Trig, taking a break from searching, leans against a barrel which gives beneath her weight. The barrel sinks slightly into the floor and a secret door opens in the north wall.
Aug 22, 2024 12:26 am
"Good show!" Tom congratulates Trig as the door triggers, having climbed up the ladder as the others searched. He moves to inspect the mechanism "An impressively concealed device, I don't know that I would have thought to even look there. "
Aug 22, 2024 3:00 pm
"Well, I..." Trig falters, then draws herself up in an attempt to look dignified (difficult with a crab on your head and dripping with slime from the sewer). "...sometimes it takes a genius!" Then she giggles, unable to say this with a straight face. "...and sometimes just a klutz!" She moves with the others to look through the newly-revealed door.
Aug 25, 2024 11:30 pm
Tom readies his bow and follows carefully after Trig--this doesn't seem like a typical door, so whatever they're entering could be actively in use by enemy agents who aren't expecting visitors to find their way in and won't be happy to see them.

Actually, that's a potential crit. In Pathfinder, you have to confirm by making another attack roll. If that one hits the target (not necessarily crits), it is a crit. If not, it's a normal hit. That being said, the combined damage from Crow and you (even without a crit) will take him down.

Tom jerks to the side as the bolt fired by the thief hurdles his way, astonished by how quickly she was able to grab a weapon and return fire. He feels the projectile impact his upper arm and winces, seeing blood staining his leathers. He flexes the arm gently and finds he was lucky, he was merely grazed by the edge of the quarrel's head, leaving a cut that doesn't seem particularly deep. Had he been a few inches to the side it would have been serious.

By the time the woman has rejected Crow's opportunity to surrender, he has worked his way into a position where he has at least a decent shot around the corner.

He wonders if this Aristina was the one he'd overheard giving orders to the group they'd fought earlier.

"We only risk our lives by going deeper. We confirmed Xanathar's involvement. And this one will be made to talk. I thinkJustice Darkhaven will be pleased to know of this place as well."

Crow was being pragmatic in this regard. They were on a fact finding mission and they now had facts to present.
Sep 17, 2024 12:35 am
Tom inspects the room to see if there's anything in addition to the thief's weapons and armor. While he has no interest in another bow, but he'll take the prisoner's bolts to replace those he fired.
Sep 17, 2024 5:33 am
Trig helps to search the room for anything more of interest, but her eyes continually flick back to Crow as she wonders what she can do to earn his approval. Koko wriggles on her head impatiently.
Sep 18, 2024 12:41 am
A search of the room turns up nothing of interest, but you can collect her crossbow bolts.

Tarna
Tarna nods her agreement. "We probably should leave well enough alone. But... I admit to wanting to see this though. We've come this far and had good fortune. I leave it up to you three. If you wish to continue, I will do my best to keep you alive. If you wish to return to the Hall of Justice, then we shall."
Sep 18, 2024 2:16 am
Tom frowns, trying to determine which side of this debate he falls on.

"While I'm tempted to agree with Crow, that it seems somewhat foolhardy for us to believe that we can take on this unknown force--it's no more foolhardy than it was when we first set out. We're in no more danger than when we left the Hall," says Tom. "If we believe our captive can expose enough of the enemy's plans for actions to be taken such that Anwyn remains safe, I agree, there is no reason to further risk harm. But I am hesitant to say that this will be the case--we have no reason yet to believe she's more than some common foot soldier. Perhaps we question her here to decide?"
Sep 18, 2024 3:45 am
"She won't talk, but the Justice's have magic that compels the truth. Lets stuff her in a barrel and go deeper. Each one of these bastards we kill or capture makes us that much safer."
Sep 19, 2024 5:00 am
Trig stares at Tom with wide eyes. ::Who is this kid, talking not just like an adult, but like a lawyer? He must be some kind of scholar,:: she decides, ::and I'm glad he's on my side.:: She doesn't really follow everything that Tom is saying, but it sounds smart. Then, when Crow says we should continue, she nods enthusiastically.
Sep 19, 2024 3:13 pm
Tarna
"Very well. The decision is made. We proceed." So saying, she starts down the hall to the north. There is a door immediately on your left and, further down, a side passage on the right.
Sep 19, 2024 3:38 pm
Tom moves forward cautiously, trailing the group and keeping his weapon trained on first the door as they approach it; not wanting a repeat of the last encounter.

Oct 9, 2024 11:23 pm
"You'd be surprised how much resistance can be found in Waterdhavian people when it comes to paying taxes." Crow whispers back. "Though I am beginning to suspect there was another purpose to my training."
Oct 12, 2024 6:06 pm
This time the lock proves less resistant and Crow can unlock the door. Opening it carefully, he sees only a darkened room beyond. Opening the door fully to let the light of your lantern shine in, you find that the room is largely filled with four tun barrels of beer, neatly lined up against the south wall of the chamber.
Oct 13, 2024 12:33 pm
"Fair enough," responds Tom. "Those both sound like entirely accurate observations."

His train of thought is interrupted by the opening of the first door.

"Hmm, that much beer implies a lot of drinkers. Hopefully this is being stored for some banquet area in the city above and not the foes we'll face here below." he looks to the others. "Do we think it's worth the time to search or just move on to the next door?"
Oct 15, 2024 12:55 am
"I think we should keep moving. If we go through everything else and still haven't found Artistina, then we can come back here and open the barrels." She shudders. "I really hope she isn't in a barrel..."
Oct 15, 2024 1:26 am
"Agreed." Crow replies emphatically.

"Oh, really, Crow! You should know I never drink on the first date!" Trig grins mischievously and skips over to the third door. She tries to open it, confident that it's another locked door to a storeroom.

An exhaustive search turns up nothing but the crates of rations. Apparently, whoever was in charge of stacking them in here just did a half-assed job.
Nov 3, 2024 3:57 am
Crow's sigh turns into a growl of frustration. "We couldn't just find something to poison the wine and call it a day?" He was only half joking.

Crow pilfurs as many rations as he could fit in his waistpouch. While it was rare that anyone starved in Waterdeep, the Chondathan youth knew they would be better served in his possession. "There are enough supplies here to work a tavern... but what if this is a supply for an army?"
Nov 3, 2024 8:44 pm
Tarna
"A valid concern," Tarna says. "If this is indeed a thieves' lair and not just the storage place for a tavern, this may indicate a much larger threat than we suspected."
Nov 4, 2024 5:03 pm
"So...do we check this last locked room, or do we continue onward?" Trig follows Crow's example and pilfers some rations.
Nov 4, 2024 11:45 pm
"That was my concern as well. I was expecting these tunnels would be a way for our foes to sneak back and forth beneath the city undetected. If it's an active barracks for dozens, we're going to need reinforcements. We can scout a bit further, but we should be careful."

Tom will grab his share of rations and pocket anything that looks handy for making his extracts.

The last door is stubborn but eventually gives egress. Beyond is a storeroom, about the same size as the others (15' square). Three of the walls are lined with shelves upon which are a variety of tools; hammers, boxes of nails, crowbars, and a selection of thieves' tools.
Nov 5, 2024 8:08 pm
"Definitely not a tavern..." Crow begins to check for better tools, tension wrenches, picks, probes, calipers, and shears. Anything better than his he replaces. Elsewise he starts to collect them as he knows how expensive such tools are.

Moving back down the hallway, your quartet returns to the main corridor. The corridor continues to the north, but a door on the east wall opens onto another, east-west corridor that intersects this one. Nov 16, 2024 9:57 pm
The curtain opens onto a blank wall, but east of the curtain is a short 10-foot wide alcove with a door on the east wall.
Nov 18, 2024 5:40 am
WhtKnt says:
The curtain opens onto a blank wall, but east of the curtain is a short 10-foot wide alcove with a door on the east wall.
OOC:
Does that mean that the curtain is on a runner so that it could be drawn east to cover that alcove (ie, it's currently "open")? Or is it just attached the wall where it is?
Nov 18, 2024 12:14 pm
Hmm, kind of odd. The curtain is likely to draw more attention to the wall if one wanted to hide the alcove. So presumably is there to either hide view of this chamber from people in the interior when the door is open (most likely explanation if you don't want people seeing you have an entrance into the sewers in your basement), or is there to initially hide people coming out of the door from view of the hallway. He turns around to see what would have a sight line to the door.
Nov 18, 2024 9:04 pm
OOC:
Correction: That will teach me to actually read my map before making a post instead of relying on memory.
The curtain opens onto a 10x10 alcove, not a blank wall. Beyond the curtain are shelves with bedding. I have posted a map that should help clarify things.

Nov 19, 2024 1:08 am
After a few moments, Trig realizes that her jaw is still hanging open, and she shuts it and looks out of the corners of her eyes to see if anyone else noticed. "That...that's a LOT of bedding! That, along with all the stuff we found before, suggests that this is a HUGE operation!" She shakes her head in disbelief, then faces the others, having regained her composure.
"So, where to, now? East down this passage," she points at the passage heading east (at 13 on the map above), "or east down the one over there?" she points down the hall at the passage that branches off in the same direction (at 17 on the map above).
Nov 22, 2024 2:45 am
"Bedding to me implies the presence of bodies nearby, at least at certain times of day. That might incline me towards the far door instead, but are we looking to avoid conflict at this point or force it? Perhaps we listen at the near door in any case, if there are a lot of people about they may be making enough noise to clue us in. "
Nov 22, 2024 2:21 pm
Trig nods, and adds in a low voice, "That makes sense to me. I'll listen low, one of you listen high?" Trig is very aware of her short stature, but in this case, it might allow two of them to listen at the door at the same time. She gently approaches the door at V13 and listens.

Dec 11, 2024 9:51 pm
The group moves down the hall to the east about 45 feet before the corridor makes an abrupt turn to the north. After another 20 feet, the corridor continues north, but a side passage cuts in from the east, going about 10 feet before ending at another door.

You try the door and find that it is not locked! Opening it ever so slightly reveals a short corridor going north about 10 feet and then turning east.

"That's weird..." Trig muses to the others quietly. "There's a corridor, but it turns toward that other door." She points at the door 25' further east down the hall. "Maybe they meet in the middle?"

Crow pads along as silently as possible.

Gah! I've reversed my directions! The main corridor goes WEST, not east! I'm sorry. So that passage should read, "The corridor goes north for 20 feet before turning west. It proceeds west as far as you can see, but there are doors on the north wall at the 15-foot and 40-foot marks."

The corridor behind the first door turns east, as indicated.
Jan 7, 2025 7:58 pm
Trig slips down the corridor behind that first door and peers around the corner.
Jan 8, 2025 7:54 pm
Peering around the corner, you see that the corridor goes about 30 feet east and ends at another door.
Jan 10, 2025 4:29 pm
Trig skips back to the other kids and reports what she's seen. "So which way do you want to go next: east or west?"

"West is left??" Trig considers how it must look to Crow, who (I guess) hasn't moved from the original corridor. "Huh. I guess so." She shrugs - Crow can do no wrong in her eyes - closes the first door, and gestures to the others to actually come around the corner and join her so she doesn't have to keep running back to the other corridor to tell them what she's seen. Assuming no one else takes the lead, Trig then proceeds further west to the second door (the one at the 40' mark). Any sounds from behind the door or otherwise? Does the corridor still continue west beyond the limit of her vision?

Nothing can be heard beyond the door, and a check finds it unlocked. The corridor continues another 15 feet west and ends at another door.
Jan 16, 2025 2:39 am
Trig eases the door open and peers inside. Presumably the others have walked the 40' from the corner to join her?
Jan 24, 2025 2:46 pm
Peering down the short (5 foot) corridor revealed, Trig can see that it opens into a room with a large table and benches set before a fireplace with dying embers in it. The remains of a meal are on the table and a delicious smell emanates through the room. A cauldron hangs above the embers.
Jan 24, 2025 4:00 pm
"I know it's not what we came for, but...is anyone hungry?" Koko shifts position on her head, opening and shutting claws. "Well, I know you're hungry, Koko! You're always hungry!"
Jan 24, 2025 10:16 pm
"I can eat. Best not leave it for the bad guys."
Jan 25, 2025 12:20 am
The room seems empty of people, and an open door on the east wall leads to a sizeable larder, similarly deserted. The cauldron is about half-full of a hearty stew and a half-loaf of bread and a partial wheel of cheese sit on the table. The remnants of the same meal can be found on plates on the table, six in number.
Jan 25, 2025 5:12 am

The larder holds what would be expected: some dried meats, fresh fruits, and casks of beer, wine, and ale, as well as water.
Feb 3, 2025 8:18 pm
"Lots and LOTS of supplies..." Trig shares what she's seen. "There must be a LOT of people around here. Are they all out on jobs?" Trig frowns, scratches her head.

Then she removes her hat and has Koko scratch her head. "A little to the left...Ahhh, that's it..."

Then, seeing the others watching her, she gets self-conscious and plops the hat back onto the crab. "This place is HUGE, too. What do you think? Do we keep trying to find Aristina in this...I don't know what to call it, a complex?...do we keep searching for her here, all of which is behind the secret door we found, or do we go back and figure out which building's basement we were in when we came out of the sewer?"
Feb 3, 2025 11:02 pm
"I reckon we are still under the city streets. Waterdeep is ancient, like, 9000 years ancient. I should think this is part of Nimoar's Holdfast." Crow mused idly between bites of stew, the young orphan, who was as part of his tax collection duties also a tour guide.

Feb 15, 2025 7:33 pm
"So...are those votes for exploring these secret tunnels more, or for exploring the building more? Remember, we went through the sewers - obviously still in Waterdeep - and then came up in a building. We don't know anything about that building, except that the basement has a secret door in it." She looks momentarily proud again, remembering her surprise at finding a secret door. "These passages that we've been exploring are all behind that secret door." She looks at her feet shyly. "I want to know where these passages go, I do, but...I am a little nervous about going so far when the only exit we know is so far behind us."
OOC:
Note this is just role-playing; as a player, I'm all for continuing. If we get cut off by an entire guild of thieves behind us, we'll figure something out: we're adventurers! But Trig is new to this, and smart enough to be a little concerned.

Feb 21, 2025 4:14 pm
Trig taps her foot. "If you guys don't want to answer my question, you could just say so." At their looks, she explains. "We all know what we're looking for: something that indicates why Aristina and the Xanathar wanted to take Anwyn and kill her family." She pauses, thinking about what she's saying. "...that probably means capturing Aristina herself; it's unlikely they'd write anything down..." She shakes herself and resumes on her original topic. "The question is where we're more likely to find that something." Hurt, she mutters "...sure, just ignore the itty-bitty gnome..." and storms out of the room they're been eating in. Once she's back in the hallway, she wipes at her eyes angrily, takes a deep breath, and murmurs "I guess we'll keep going in these tunnels after all..." Now, more calmly/cautious, Trig continues west toward the door at the end of the hall.

Is there anything noteworthy about that door? Can she hear anything through the door?

Feb 22, 2025 4:39 pm
"This would make a great fort!" Trig enthuses. "You could play down here for weeks!" She turns sober again, considering. "Everything we've seen suggests that this place has been prepared for a LOT of people. Do you think that they've just got it ready and they haven't got all their friends together yet, or do you think there's a lot of people living here already and they're just off someplace else for the moment?"
OOC:
How much food had been prepared, and how much of what was left did we eat? Did we make a dent in the leftovers? That might give some indication as to whether there are a lot of people already living down here (and they're around here somewhere) or not.

Mar 8, 2025 3:12 pm
Crow makes a check for a bucket and finds one, but alas, no treasure, only fresh water.
Mar 8, 2025 6:43 pm
Trig looks into the well. "Hmm...there could be a secret exit hidden below the surface, but to find it, one of us would have to climb down into the water and look..." Trig thinks she's being subtle, but she gets a sly smile on her face at the image of Crow shirtless (in her mind, she doesn't for a moment imagine that she, too, would have to get in the water if there was a secret door). "...no? Yeah, I don't want to get in that, either." She sighs, the exhalation blowing a greasy curl out of her eyes. Koko may or may not look mournfully at the water that it won't get to enter; who can tell what a crab is feeling? "Well, there's at least one other door we haven't tried." Trig softly leads the way back out of this well room, back east down the corridor, and to the first door, which opens onto the passage that turns a corner east and ends at a door. "You wanta try this one...?" she whispers to the others.

Crow looks around for something to stuff the thing in. Hopefully something that can be easily rolled.
Mar 28, 2025 9:00 pm
You are in what appears to be a bedroom, well-furnished and well-kept. Against the south wall is a neatly-made bed with a wooden chest at the foot. To the north is a sprawling hearth, flanked by bookshelves with several volumes. Before the fireplace is a desk and chair, and a lantern sits on the desk, shining too brightly to be natural. A search of the creature itself reveals three potions and a ring of five keys. You do not find anything that the thing could easily be stuffed in, unfortunately.
Mar 29, 2025 3:25 pm
How large is the chest?

We can either stuff him in the chest (if he'll fit) or roll him up in blankets and then tie them around him (we could do the same with a rug, if there is one - rugs tend to be more durable).
Mar 29, 2025 8:21 pm
As you look around, you find that his scorpion's tail crumbles to dust after a few moments, leaving a normal human male before you. He can be fit into the chest with some effort (it would be easier if he were dismembered). There is no rug, but you do have blankets.
Mar 29, 2025 9:34 pm
"Ah, some kind of spell." Crow checks the fiend for a pulse, if he was dead there was no point in bringing him in. They had other live prisoners back at the entrance. "Lets search here carefully, this must have been the leader. So let us find intelligence and evidence."

Figuring the man to be a wizard, Crow begins to rifle through his papers for evidence.

He yet lives. Your last attack was non-lethal, but it dropped him to 0 hit points (actually like -2 or something), so he is merely unconscious. In rifling through his papers and books, you find what appears to be a spellbook. The rest of the papers describe various things:

a) Ledgers and accounting for the day-to-day operations of the lair
b) Notes and scribbles on summoning something, though the papers aren't quite clear on what, exactly
c) Several notes to someone named Kalik about a variety of topics, including recruiting, supplies, and the like, from someone named Arestina
d) Time schedules, apparently showing who is supposed to be on guard duty and who is out of the lair
Mar 30, 2025 4:52 pm
OOC:
For the time being, we're going to wrap him in blankets and tie him up so that we can keep an eye on him (stuffing him into the chest is iffy if we want to get him out again). On the assumption that he is a wizard, we're going to gag him, too.

"Ooh, ooh, ooh!" Trig chirps excitedly, seeing the time schedules. "This should give us a much better idea how many people are using this secret base!"

The unconscious man offers no resistance to being subdued. A quick examination of the time schedule provides the following names: Arestina, Kalik, Sheril, Preston, Bellan, Strif, Salvatore, Drumas, Merith, Portious, and Miquel.
Apr 4, 2025 3:53 am
"Hmm." Trig says, examining the schedule and then showing it to the others. "If this list is complete - and current - it could mean that there's at most seven other people we haven't encountered yet. Do any of you remember the names of the people we fought earlier? I think one or two of them called each other by name..."

OOC:
I looked back, but unless I missed it, I can't see where any of them used names except for the leader's name, Arestina.
Apr 9, 2025 6:46 pm
"There are eleven names here." Trig points out, "So far, we've encountered four people. There were the two we encountered right after going through the secret door in the basement (of the building we haven't explored or identified): one didn't get back up again, the other we tied up and stuffed into a barrel. They mentioned Aristina, which probably is the same as this Arestina. Then there was at least one person asleep in that locked room, and then this guy," she nudges the man who until recently had a scorpion tail. "That makes four, assuming they were on this list. But even if they weren't on the list, eleven people is a smaller number than I was expecting, what with all the supplies we've seen. Are they expecting a siege down here?"
OOC:
I have to admit that I'm losing track of what we haven't explored yet: there's the locked & barred door that we didn't open, and there's going up into the building from the basement. Without considering any secret doors, what other exits/paths are there that we haven't explored?

Crow carries the rolled up person to the hallway and waits on someone smarter to decide what they do next
Apr 16, 2025 3:34 am
Trig tries to mentally review the areas that they've explored, wanting to make sure that they haven't overlooked anything. "What do you think, Koko?" she asks, raising her hat, "Do we have enough evidence to take back to town?" The crab clacks its small pincer noncommittally. "I don't know how we're going to get in that locked room without breaking down the door..."
OOC:

Hearing no response to her comment about the locked door, Trig suggests "Hey, everybody! There's one place I think we should check again, just to see if there are any other hidden entrances to this place: back by the barracks room!" So saying, she heads to that area and starts examining the western wall of the north-south passage leading up to the curtained alcove. She's confident that others with better eyesight will look alongside her.
OOC:
I still haven't given up on the idea of an exit hidden in the well, but I don't think Trig is desperate enough to browbeat herself or others to take a dive to check it. It's of course possible that a secret door might be at any point along the north wall of the long east-west storage-room corridor, but the stretch of wall across from the barracks is a lot shorter and faster to search...

...but as I've said like five times now, Trig has a penalty for searching, and should NOT be the only one looking in any search situation.

Trig looks back and forth between the locked and barred door and Crow, eagerly expecting him to work more of his magic. Her face falls when he keeps walking, but then she shrugs and scurries to catch up. When they see the ornate double doors, Trig's eyes widen. "THAT looks important..." she breathes. "Do you think it leads to...the Xanathar?!?"

Barely daring to breathe, Trig tip-toes forward to listen at the right-hand door.

Crow finds that the lock gives easily under his talented fingers. Beyond is a staircase going up.

May 14, 2025 1:42 am
Trig and Tarna are looking into an opulent chamber, about 45 feet deep and 25 feet wide. About halfway across the room is a curtain that forms a makeshift wall. On this side of the curtain, there is a table with eight chairs along the north wall and a bookshelf along the south wall. The shelf is not packed, but it contains several volumes of an esoteric nature. Beyond the curtain, you can see a wooden chest and a four-poster bed with silk sheets.
