Scene 1: Inn Plain Sight

After a long rest and more hours of travel, the adventuring party come to an inn built into the remains of a crumbling stone tower. This is Inn Plain Sight, the place the party has been requested to meet the townsfolk about their problems with the great red dragon Cinderhowl. The Inn is well-known for its delicious hot wings that the proprietor, Alax Jadescales, makes fresh to order. Alax is also one of the townsfolk to be met, as noted in the gold advance received before arriving.

The gnomish paladin, Derv, ties his summoned steed up at the hitching post, fresh water bubbling from the fountain next to it. He secures his steed enough so that it does not wander, but can get loose and run away if needed.

The human sailor, Hindle, looks about, and seems to be mumbling to himself again, much as he has done throughout the journey so far. The halfling rogue, Merton, walks alongside Hindle, but seems to keep his distance.

The dwarf wizard, Enigo, and human druid, Leana, still seem a bit distracted discussing her home. Enigo seems eager to learn more about her world and Leana has much to say about her world before they met.

Peeking inside the Inn, it appears to be empty and almost deserted. However, as the group walks in, they smell the most delicious hot wings of their lives.

What memories do the smells evoke?
May 27, 2024 5:25 pm
Looking into the window Merton gets a whiff of the hot wings and can't help but think of THAT job.

He was offered "work" which required him to go undercover at a restaurant that served exclusively hot wings. His target unknown but would be revealed later. He stayed undercover for 6 months waiting, but no order ever came...except for the Lousianna Rub and Spicy Korean Q flavored wings. But he waited...until he didn't and the smell of grease was too much.

The memory distant but still potent. He will never forget the time at that Wings Stop....
May 27, 2024 5:34 pm
This smell... what is it? It is an irresistible blend of savory, spicy and ... slightly sweet aromas. Leanas stomach makes a loud growling noise as she walks towards the scent. The young druid smells chicken, something ... sharp, chili peppers ... honey .... she sniffs loudly, following her nose much like stalking prey ... what else? ... ah garlic, onion and ... and ... something...

"Hallo!" she all but shouts. Leana has taken step after step in pursuit of the heavenly smell and stands before a sparsely decorated counter. "Where is the chef? What herbs do you use? Where do you get them from? Is there any ... food for us?" She looks left and right expectantly.
May 28, 2024 4:44 am
As Hindle opens the door to the inn, a tangy pungent aroma wafts out, stinging the inside of his nose. Taking a step inside, his foot hits cold water and sand as the wind carries news of a coming squall past his face. He can see young Merowen youths catching rock hoppers chicks nearby. There will be a hakari tonight with the arrival of the Yagar's Harem. Another step carries him past the young women around the firepit pulling the leaf wrapped birds from the coals. Waimarie is beautiful in the light of the setting sun, but the smell of the manaaki bubbling away nearby...
Leana's brash call shatters the reverie as she shoulders past him on her way to the counter.

Seating himself at a table nearby, Hindle watches Leana's antics hopeful that they will be productive. Given the lack of custom, perhaps the food isn't ready despite the delicious smells.

Chicken! How dare they eat chicken? Didn't they understand?

No of course they didn't, he could go and flip the tables but they would still return to chicken as it was all they knew. He could show them the better way but he didn't have time that was a job for someone else.

Perhaps today, he checked his rucksack, he was Indeed out of those flat round disks their lord had gifted them. Pizza he believed they were called. That was what one was meant to eat, yet today he tried his best to look disappointed today he would have to eat chicken.
May 28, 2024 4:14 pm
Next comes in the dwarf. Stout, broad-shouldered, no-long traditional beard but a nicely trimmed black moustache. Raven black, long, curly hair. Clad in blue travelling clothes, with a nice wizard's hat and a shiny scale mail. Enigo Brickoswky presents an eclectic mix of traditional wizard and modern dwarf.

The smell of spicy food in his nostrils he waltzes behind the rest of their group and beelines directly to the bar. "A foaming mug of your best, good man." the wizard makes his wishes known. "And a bucket full of tendies, for my friend here." Brickoswky adds caringly, ordering some meat for his most trusted companion. A grey-tigered tomcat aptly named Roaring Kitten, who loves stock (mostly chicken) and tendies. Satiesfied that his order will be met, the dwarfen wizard turns around, looking where the rest of their small group can be found. Slowly setting one foot in front of the other, Brickowsky closes the distance and lets himself fall with an "humpf" into a creaking chair and stretches out his weary legs. "Better" he announces content, already looking for his beer.

The door to the back room swings open, and a human innkeeper comes out behind the bar. He appears to be the most average-looking man the party has met yet. The only noticeable features are the large mass of messy black hair on top of his head and a jingling as he walks, perhaps from his keys or the large strangely shaped pendant he wears around his neck. The man gives a cheesy smile behind a black beard and mustache.

"Oh, I’m afraid you’ve come at a bad time! We’re closed for renovations actually. I’m the chef here, but I can’t go around givin' away my trade secrets. I’ll be happy to make you some hot wings and drinks to help you on your journey though, wherever you are goin'."

He turns around and starts grabbing bottles of beer off the shelves and carelessly shoving them into a crate. One bottle tips and falls onto the floor. The glass can be heard breaking behind the bar. However, the man seems to barely acknowledge the breakage as he continues grabbing bottles off the shelves.
May 28, 2024 7:50 pm
are you ok? Do you need help cleaning that up?

Merton steps forward a but and offers his hand to help
May 28, 2024 9:14 pm
Sparing a sideglance to his friends, Brickowsky seems alarmed by this behaviour, as his brows creep closer together and he sits up. "You spilled good beer." he brings to the innkeeper's attention. "Is something bothering you?"

Looking around, the wizard checks the room for anything out of the ordinary.

The barkeep oddness alone kindles Hindle's suspicions, but adding the fact that they were specifially summoned here raises them to an open flame. "That is unfortunate, but we are hungry. Please bring us some of those delicious wings."

"Where can we go then?" Derv ask straight to the point, he doesn't mind taking his lodging elsewhere but didn't think the town had another place to stay.
May 29, 2024 1:57 pm
"What do you mean: wherever we are going? We were summoned here by the good townspeople, no?" Leana raises her hands, then looks at her companions. Are they making fun of her again? Is this the wrong town? She tries to remember the wording of the letter, but it had shiny gold in it and it was ...soo...long. Besides Enigo is the one who bothers with such trivial things as books. And he surely wouldn't play tricks on her. She nods to herself and decides that they are where they are supposed to be.

"Surely we haven't received a golden advance just to come help renovate your house? Although I suppose we could? What do you have in mind?" She turns around in a circle and eyes every corner of the inn sharply. Then she looks at the unwelcoming man. "What upgrades do you require, sir? Out with it." She rubs her hands together and some green sparks dance over her skin.
May 29, 2024 5:31 pm
"Oh no no no, I am quite all right. Just tired from all these renovations that need to be done."

He then unceremoniously shoves the crate of beers into Merton’s arms, the box taking up a third of his height.

"Here are your drinks, kid."

Merton stumbles back with the crate, but takes the time to check on the innkeeper’s responses. Though the innkeeper has a cheesy smile, the smile clearly does not go up to his eyes.
May 29, 2024 5:31 pm
As Enigo looks around during this encounter, he sees relatively new notices on the noticeboard and a shiny plaque next to the fireplace in the room. Crates are piled around the entrance, perhaps sign of the renovations, but they look rather dusty. A set of stairs sits across from the fireplace, also looking rather dusty.
May 29, 2024 5:33 pm
Invisible to all but Hindle, he watches something behind the innkeeper and settles his gaze at the back door before returning to scrutinizing the man.

May 29, 2024 5:35 pm
After "handing" Merton the drinks, the innkeeper turns towards Derv and Leana.

"Yeah yeah, if you’re tryin’ to get to the town, that’s down that rocky pathway to the valley. I’m sure the mayor has room for all of you."

As he sees the sparks come out of Leana’s skin, he gulps a little.

"I’m sure the advance was for something else, not renovating my inn. You should check with the mayor. Tell him Merry Rumwell sent you. Let me get you those hot wings so you can be on your way."

He hastily rushes through the back doors. He shouts back through them:

"Feel free to look around, make yourselves feel comfortable until you go."

Good point!

The smile not only appears insincere, but there is a cruel sneer to it. Clearly, the innkeeper Merry does not like your party and you suspect it is because he wants you to leave. All the more reason to check out what is going on at Inn Plain Sight!

With that, Hindle closes his eyes. Opening them back up and eyeing everyone pointedly, "No jokes." Closing his eyes again, Hindle slumps in his seat with head drooping."

As Hindle closes his eyes and his head starts to droop, it feels like his whole being drops down into darkness. He looks up and opens his "eyes," everything looking much bigger and glowing colors he only sees when he wears Miet's senses.

Miet swiftly ducks through the swinging doors as Merry rushes through them. On the other side, Hindle/Miet sees a spacious kitchen that is empty and looks like it has not been used for some time. A trapdoor to presumably the wine cellar sits on the left as Merry veers to the right. He grabs a bottle of red liquid and a bowl from the shelf. He scoops out chicken wings that already appear to be seasoned from a large barrel and pours them into the bowl. He shakes a good third of the bottle onto the wings and tosses them before searching the kitchen for something else.

"AHCHOO! *snort* What in the world, I thought I had a spell to deal with the allergies in this area. The only thing I'm really allergic to otherwise is...pixie dust."

Merry stops and starts to look around the room. Miet shrinks back, but Hindle/Miet can hear him mumble "Now where did I put that see invisibiity scroll..."
May 30, 2024 5:11 pm
Slowly coming back to his feet, the wizard straightens his blue tunic and trudges to the bar. Still empty handed, still dry throated. Not a endurable condition for a dwarf. Looking for a beer, or some more for his friends if it can be helped, the spellslinger leaves a handful copper pieces as payment for this frist round of lifesupporting beverages.

He happens to look around to see if anything else catches his eye.

Stepping carefully around the broken bottle, Enigo is able to find some glass mugs underneath the bar along with a lute carelessly deposited next to them. There is still beer in the taps and the wizard is able to pull some nice drinks for himself and his friends. He slides a drink down to Merton and toasts to Derv and Leana. Hindle's drink sits at the bar, waiting for him to awaken.

As the dwarf enjoys his drink and sets an almost empty mug down, he notices some words carved into the top of the bar.

The tree hides the way

Evil makes merry while good sleeps
May 30, 2024 9:14 pm
Satiesfied, that his instincts had served him well, the wizard taps his finger on the separate carvings and dishes out a knowing glance to Leana and the rest of the group. A lead, guys? His curiosity sparked - and now with a half-emptied mug in his hand - Brickoswky waltzes to the relatively new notices on the noticeboard and the shiny plaque next to the fireplace in the room. More clues to be uncovered?
May 31, 2024 12:21 am
"I'll take a drink too, just because I wear a pendant don't mean I can't drink!" Derv says to Brickowsky, walking over and grabbing a drink for himself.
It's true some folks among the Devout might shun him if they knew he was touching a beverage but most of those folks shunned him anyway, he preferred the word "When in Greece do as the Greeks do." Though he wasn't sure where Greece was he'd decided it applied to everywhere.

He supposed he should do his die diligence and make sure the beer wasn't evil beer before consumption.

@KoldikSteelskin Good idea to check the beer and the surrounding area! What does it look like when Derv uses his Divine Sense?
May 31, 2024 2:43 am
Brickowsky first looks at the fireplace. It still has ashes piled in it and a paw print from the ash can be seen on the hearth.

His attention is then captured by the shiny plaque. Prominently across the top is a shiny metal plate with the words Adventurers of the Month - Heroes Association Guild (HAG)

https://i.imgur.com/O5aqICD.jpeg

"The Hard Way plundered the lair of the dragon Cinderhowl and returned alive!"

Next to the plaque is a large parchment with the following: "Missing cat. :( Large with black fur and tentacles. Answers to Pouncy. Loves milk. Please contact Alax Jadescales if found."

Brickowsky or anyone that followed, please make a perception check.

May 31, 2024 5:21 pm
Derv’s expression changes and his head swivels left and right as he uses his Divine Sense. He sniffs his beer as well and finds that it is not cursed. In fact, it may be a little blessed, which kept it good quality in the taps all this time. He is able to sip his drink as his Divine Sense reaches further out. It is rebuffed at the crumbling tower nearby, but he soon smells a noxious odor. He detects an undead presence at the Inn. As he moves about with his drink, he notices the smell seems to be coming from the direction of the kitchen.

Dhakhan says:
In annoyance, Hindle thinks at Miet, "How many pixies has this guy been around to know he's allergic!? Hide, quickly!"
Miet looks about and spots the trap door has been wedged open with some bags of rice flour. She quickly darts down, hiding behind a wine bottle. As she flies past Merry, he sneezes violently again.

Hindle/Miet can no longer see what Merry is up to, but can hear him loudly moving items around in the kitchen.
May 31, 2024 5:30 pm
Brickowsky coaxes Roaring Kitty to stand near the print at the hearth and, indeed, it looks much like a cat paw print, but much bigger.

Leana swoops in to compare the cat paw prints and also quickly glances at the plaque and notice. The plaque is very new and does not have dust like the other items around Inn Plain Sight. Unfortunately, no indication of which month is given for when the adventurers were recognized. Only due to her great nature and tracking skills is she able to follow the weeks-old tracks to the stairs across from the fireplace.

As Merton joins the group looking at the plaques and notice, his movement is enough for them to notice another poster behind the missing cat notice. A scrap of paper with a sketch of a red dragon's face is half-hidden behind the notice with the words "Symbol of the Cult of the Dragon."
May 31, 2024 6:27 pm
Merton is shocked and a little scared with the thought of a dragon.
OOC:
Imagine you are playing a Lego video game and how they silently shake and pantomime fear with the lego rattling sounds.
He will go then approach Brickowsky and whisper in his ear there is something about a cult and a dragon pinned on the notice board. we probably should be very careful

"Things Should Not Be Alive here." Derv says and when he is Inevitably given a strage look adds, "That Are."

He points in the direction of the Kitchen. "Things Should Be Dead there."

Then he look at each member of the group one by one in silence before while not looking at anyone saying,

"Care to Join me."
Jun 1, 2024 2:30 pm
Leana has already put a foot on the first step to ascend upstairs in search of the poor kitty, but returns to Derv's side with a serious look that is highly atypical of her. "If there are undead here, it must be our first priority to restore balance by setting them to rest." The young druid looks back to the paw prints and sighs, then heads for the kitchen, ready to serve nature as she has been trained to do.
Jun 1, 2024 4:37 pm
Looking unhappy and undecided for a long moment - maybe they could spare him? Yes? - Brickowsky would love to follow the track of the little kitten. This sounds like an easy win. And the dwarfs loves to cross things from his to-do-list. Instead he falls in behind Leana and makes ready to see what it is, that should be dead, but isn't.

As Hindle and Miet deal with hiding from Merry, the other four venture together to the kitchen. As Derv pushes the swing door open, he can hear Merry violently sneezing again. He also smells the foul odor much stronger, though it does not seem to come from Merry. The violent sneezing and Merton's excellent sneaking skills allow him to crouch down behind the partially open trapdoor and remain unseen by everyone.

"Oh, oh my! It's against health code to have non-employees in the back! Let me get you those hot wings so you can be on your way."

Merry hurries back to the bowl of hot wings tossed in sauce and hastily dumps them into a nearby empty rice flour sack. He pushes the sack into Derv's hands and makes a shooing motion at Derv, Leana, and Brickowsky.

Merry crosses his arms and huffs a little.

As Derv and Leana circle around the kitchen during Merry's exchange with Brickowsky, they end up meeting at the trapdoor. With only an exit to outside the Inn and back into the dining area, this appears to be the only other place the rotten smell could be from.

Hindle/Miet tries to fly deeper into the wine cellar. Miet hops between wine bottles, trying to stay hidden. She is only able to go about 5 feet away from the stairs, but she does not see anything out of the ordinary. She does feel a chill though and gladly appears back on Hindle's shoulder. Hindle and Miet enter the kitchen just as Leana and Derv look at the trapdoor then nod at each other.

Leana jumps a mile, then tries to be inconspicuous like Merton has asked her to be in case he talks to her with his magic. She has not gotten used to this trick of his and shakes her head once or twice before she gets a grip. What a strange thing to do...
She breathes in and out then goes to talk to the inn keeper, whose sanctum they seem to disturb.

"Sir, I know what it's like to take care of a special place and I don't want to threaten it. However, there is something unnatural in your cellar. Something my friends and I believe is walking, although dead. It is our duty to end the creature and restore balance. I am sure your kitchen will be better for it." Leana rummages around her bag and produces a small pouch. "My dwarfish companion over there suffers from allergies as well. I have mixed something together to help him on our journeys and offer you the same remedy."

The young druid produces a small, fluffy object that has the distinct smell of rosmary and ... something. She offers it to the agitated man. "Chew this, friend, and your allergies will be gone for a while. Surely you will be able to smell the foulness in here. We aren't robbers or hooligans, but we must free your place of the evil downstairs." She puts the fluffy gum like ball into his hands and starts decending into the darkness.

During all the hullabaloo, Merton is able to sneak from behind the trapdoor to some barrels by the exit out of the Inn's kitchen. He has a perfect view of the swing door and the hot sauces where Merry is standing now.

As Leana hands Merry the allergy remedy, he seems to unconsciously hold his hand out to take what she offers. As he sniffs the remedy, he smells something distinctly not rosemary and makes a face. He doesn't do anything though as he watches the group descend down to the wine cellar.

Derv, Leana, Brickowsky, and Hindle descend the stairs through the trapdoor into the wine cellar. Derv, Leana, and Brickowsky are able to use their darkvision to look around the dimly lit room. Wine racks line the walls and the cellar seems to be dusty like the crates were in the dining room. Just around the stairs, Leana is able to find the source of the foul smell, a spilled bottle of wine. Three big rats take advantage of the contents. Derv notices the foul odor from his Divine Sense seems to be stronger further in.

As soon as the group disappears, Merry tucks away the allergy remedy Leana gave him and opens a Dimension Door! Merton hears him mumble "...tower." He steps through and vanishes.

Ah, OK, good to know! Will work on that.

As Merton communicates that he is joining the group, Derv steps further to the wine racks and wall, his axe clanging against the stone sides with his anger. The rats skitter a little at the sound, but return back to drinking at the spilled wine. Hindle moves out of the way in the same direction as Derv as Merton exits the stairwell. Leana and Brickowsky push back a little against the wine racks to provide room for everyone to gather in their corner.

Will the group continue in darkness or use some type of light to help out those without darkvision?

Leana shoots Hindle a dirty look. Vermin? Look who's talking now... In the dim light of the cellar, the air thick with the scent of decay, the young woman kneels down on the cold, damp floor. Her eyes, accustomed to the gloom, quickly find the two rats stumbling unsteadily over a half-empty bottle of an unidentified liquid.

With a deep breath, the druid reaches out with her innate connection to nature, channeling her magic to bridge the gap between her consciousness and the minds of the rodents. Her voice, calm and soothing, takes on a strange quality as she starts to talk in their language. I came down on my own to get us some celebratory drinks after visiting Cinderhowl's lair (he winks at Brickowsky and his elbow passes through his arm) and then I don't remember much after that."

He glances at Derv as he ponders.

Hindle recalls where he has seen this type of pearl before in his travels. It is a Pearl of Power. While it is on one’s person, one can use an action to speak the command word and regain one expended spell slot. If the expended slot was of 4th level or higher, the new slot is 3rd level.

Brickowsky recalls the same, but he also recognizes that the wearer must be attuned and the pearl can only be used once for the day and will not be usable again until the next dawn.

Oswin now unsheathes his ghostly hammer and readies it.

"I..I don’t quite remember why I have been down here so long. I know I went to get drinks. I took a sip and then everything went black…

Leana's senses reach deep into the earth, into nature. She builds on her strong connection to the woods and sends out a spiritual call into the environment surrounding their party. Small particles of dirt start to elevate from the floor in front of them. They swirl for a moment before setting themselves together into a form. A fox with dark fur and a white tail tip appears between Leana and the apparition.

Out of the dark and from a different direction from the group, a violet blade hits Oswin in the chest. Oswin’s ghostly form looks almost transparent after the wave of attacks. He does not notice Hindle as he melts into the darkness of the wine cellar. The only clear foe in front of him now is Derv and he turns towards him. One would think a cleric would take the time to heal himself, but perhaps the lack of a body has made him forget about basic self-preservation. He rushes 15 feet forward to stand in front of Derv and swings his ghostly hammer down with all his might with both hands.

Oswin looks thoughtful at Leana's question.

"Hrm hrm, dragon cult. I remember Althea and I researching the area and came across something like that. They worship that dragon god...'Tammy' or 'Mattie,' something like that. Trying to release her on the world, the usual. They were actually some of the first settlers in this area. I'm sure their detritus is scattered about this very valley."

Oswin's body now fully fades away and his disembodied head turns to Hindle for the last question.
Jun 25, 2024 1:47 am
Flustered by the ghosts seemingly unerring preternatural stare at him through the darkness, Hindle drops his invisiblity and step forwards. "I'm assuming a dragon's den is the best place to keep a Red Dragon's egg warm, so where exactly is Cinderhowl's lair?"
Jun 25, 2024 5:40 pm
Oswin looks in the direction of the barrels in the corner, presumably also the direction of where Cinderhowl's lair must be.

"Ah, I guess it doesn't matter now to disclose its location. It is up in the mountain range, past this Inn as we are on the edge of the trail down into the valley. It is easy to find, following that dragon's destruction to a large cave opening. I don't think she expects visitors so she doesn't really hide it."

Oswin sighs and takes one last look at his body.

"Please, find who did this and if any of the Hard Way need assistance. The church in the village will see to my bones. As fellow adventurers, feel free to use what you need..."

As Oswin utters the last sentence, he smiles serenely and closes his eyes. A white flash and his spirit is gone.

Leana signs a druidic symbol on one of the bones. Oswin has deserved his rest. She gives herself a moment of stillness, then gets up and goes in the direction of the rat that has disappeared. "Just so you know, we have to clear the upstairs of this inn as well. There is a kitten still missing." she states while searching for the passage.
Jun 26, 2024 7:08 am
"Uhm, yes.", Hindle says as he picks up the earing from where he dropped it. "We should also look for clues as to who that 'Merry Rumwell' was. He wanted us out of here fast for some reason and I doubt it was", waving his hand abscently at Oswin's pile of bones and remaing detritus, "just this."

Calling Miet back from the aether, he shoos her up the stairs. "Have a look around upstairs for any surprises. Stay unseen, though." As Miet fades from sight, Hindle heads back to the stairs, presumably following behind her. Just as he places his hand on the railing he hurries up, calling out annoyedly, "Yes, I'll open the door for you."

Stealing a dragon egg is an act that will bring him fame and honor among his ancestors, no doubt. Oswin had shown courage and bravery, so it is only right to pay him a last respects.

Turning away, the magician agrees with Leana. It is time to save this feline. Feeling for Roaring Kitty with his own soft hand, the dwarf has to smile and looks around at what his comrades are doing.

Miet excitedly flies closer to the sparkles at the end of the hall. She stops and squints her eyes when she realizes the sparkling is light reflecting off the plaque and pictures on the wall. She snorts aloud, annoyed at the lack of treasure and looks about for more. There are doors on either side, but they are all closed and she must wait again for someone to open them.

Hindle feels through the bag and realizes it must be the rice flour sack that Merry had put their chicken wings in. He dumps them onto a plate on a nearby counter. They still smell deliciously, but they are covered in leftover rice flour.

As he reaches up and opens the cupboard, he is carried away by sneezing from the rice flour left on his hands and jerks the doors open. One bottle of hot sauce tips over and spills some into Hindle's eyes! He takes 1 point of damage.

#@!*

After wiping the hot sauce out of his eyes, he notes 5 bottles of unopened hot sauce lined up in the cabinet. It must be what is left of the famous Inn Plain Sight wing sauce. Finally, he carefully leans over the barrel to sniff the tangy sauced wings. They seem to be magically preserved, still smelling delicious with no signs of decay or mold. It would be tempting to eat one if Hindle hadn't already had a face full of sauce just a minute ago.

Whatever is coming towards them, will have to break through the window of ice. If it is friendly, she will let it melt instantly. Should an enemy approach them, it will give them a moment longer to react.

As the skittering gets louder and louder, the party readies itself for the worst and the fox growls low and crouches.

Those with darkvision see the spiders first as they dash around a corner in the dark. They are almost as large as the shadowy fox and skid to a halt once they reach the edge of light from the torch and see the myriad of obstacles. The last door on the right, of course, is locked and must be the interesting one. He sees the pictures and plaque Miet noticed earlier on the wall as well.
Jul 1, 2024 4:59 pm

She sneezes a bit like a kitten, but soon lies prone and army crawls through the space. As she gets up to dust herself off, she looks about. This room contains a bed and a closed chest. Above the bed hangs a family portrait: two dragonborn parents with an unhatched egg. One proud parent has light-green scales; the other has golden scales.

****************************************

While Miet is checking out the locked room, Brickowsky and Hindle glance quickly at the plaque and pictures on the wall. One picture depicts a harp nestled between the horns of a crescent moon. Another is a green-scaled dragonborn in a heroic pose. The plaque has a mountain scene carved into it.
Jul 6, 2024 10:25 am
"Doesn't MERTON have some lock makers tools?" the dwarf asks Dhakhan. "Where is the fellow?" Brickowsky grumbles further while craning his neck looking for the halfling. "Hiding in the shadows again, most likely..."

As his comrade doesn't appear, the wizard shakes his head in frustration and turns to the picture and takes it down from the wall. Taking a closer look, he also views the backside of the frame to see if there is an inscription. Who may this person be? And if it is the same dragonborne as in the picture above the bed and so on.
Jul 6, 2024 9:53 pm
Brickowsky peers closer at the picture of the dragonborn in a heroic pose. His emerald green scales glitter as he poses crouched, one claw reaching out to the viewer as the other claw is lifted high, holding a silvery frying pan. The dragonborn is looking at Brickowsky with a boyish grin, his sharp teeth barely revealed. The dwarf carefully flips the portrait to see the backside of the frame. In small letters on the bottom right are the words Alax Jadescales, Sammaster's Red Tower

Brickowsky ponders about the relation of this dragonborn and the picture Hindle mentions Miet has noticed in the locked room. There is certainly a picture of a green dragonborn inside, perhaps the same one or a relation? He will have to do his own research by comparing the two when he enters the room.

Stepping into the room with the picture still in hand, Brickowsky is delighted that they know now what Jadescales looks like. A dragonborn of course. The name tells the story. One might haved guised. Letting his gaze wander, of there is a cat to be found up here, the magic user holds out the picture of Alex to anyone who might be interested as he steps closer to the sack on the high shelf. Pushing the thing with his wizards' wand, he makes sure there is no cat hidden inside it.

If he couldn't find the feline in it, the dwarf would take a minute to investigate the sack, the embroided face, what is inside and so one, before turning towards the picture with the dragonborn.

Brickowsky so far has not seen any more obvious paw prints. He pokes his wand at the sack with a face and nothing untoward happens. There is also no movement and he could almost swear it seems empty. As Leana dashes up the stairs, the spider left behind is smart enough to follow its companion and skitter around the corner again. The spirit fox faithfully stands guard at the ice wall until Leana’s return. Unbeknownst to her as she dashes up the stairs to the rest of the group, Derv steps around Oswin’s bones and a glowing circle suddenly appears under him. Leana, assuming Derv is behind her, is already through the swing doors as his shout is swallowed up with him as he vanishes. Leana arrives at the doorway with the group just as Merton shouts out to the mysterious sneezer.
Jul 10, 2024 4:46 am
The chest at the foot of the bed suddenly opens and a long blue tongue rolls out. It turns towards the group and appears as if the tongue will reach for Merton. It stops as he summons his psychic blade and threatens the monster.

"Whoa whoa whoa buddy, just trying to make a living here. Put your sharp toys away before you are bit by something sharper!"
Jul 10, 2024 5:21 am
A mimic? Huh any chase you see a kitty around here? Merton says as he dismisses the blade
Jul 12, 2024 2:54 am
The chest mimic pulls back its long tongue and taps the top of its lid with it, almost like it is in a thinking position.

"Eh? A kitty? Ain't seen no kitties around here, just delicious hot wings and trespassers. And maybe a tentacled beast that disappeared into that bag. I don't know if it's there or not anymore."

The mimic's tongue has been slowly creeping closer to the group as it answers Merton's question.
Jul 12, 2024 3:43 am
Hold your place! Merton says resummoning his blade to his hand.

as for the tentacled beast...in this bag? merton says pointing to the dusty bag that fell earlier

Picking up the sack, Brickowsky turns it inside out just to be sure. Maybe this is a magic bag?

He would also reach in and so on, to make sure he finds everything.

The chest mimic immediately retracts its blue tongue again and it stays inside the mimic's mouth.

"Yes, that bag. Bag left with man, man left bag here next day."
Jul 14, 2024 12:04 am
Brickowsky turns the bag inside out and a number of items spill out that could not clearly have fit. The bag seems to be bigger on the inside, or it was before it was turned inside out.

As the items clunk onto the floor, the group finds:

- A plush mouse (stuffed with catnip per Leana's experience and Druidic knowledge)
- A tuft of blue-black fur
- Full set of Leather Armor
- Shield
- 5 Pearls
Jul 14, 2024 7:14 am
As Bricko investigates the bag, Hindle asks creature, "What is your name? And what living are you here to make?"
Startled by the talking chest and it’s frog-like tongue, Miet moves up high near the ceiling, before retreating to Hindle’s shoulder.
OOC:
Ooops! Mentioned wrong character!

Some useful stuff maybe... Brickowsky pockets the ugly bag for the moment right after he collected the things that came out of it. The plush mouse he has to forcefully keep away from Roaring Kitty. Instead, he feeds the small but fierce tomcat some tendies. RK loves tendies!

Next the dwarven wizard waltzes over to the bed, after making sure the mimic isn't going to blitz him. Taking a closer look at the other picture on the wall, Brickoswky is interested who is it that is depicted up there. Reaching out with his mage hand if the picture is to hard to get without some kind of unfashionably athletics, like climbing on the bed or somesuch. Quecking again for a scripture at the back of it, the wizard also lets his gaze roam for any further hints. So far no kitten, no Alex, not an inkling of an idea what to do next, after the finished searching this exact room.

The chest mimic licks its "lips" and says to Hindle "I'm here to eat as many delicious hot wings as I can! I can't get enough of that sause! The man brings us the good stuff if we eat anybody that gets in here."

Roaring Kitty stays in the corner, enjoying the tendies, as Brickowsky gets close to the picture on the wall, well away from the chest mimic as it speaks with Hindle. The mage hand tugs at the picture, but it appears to be glued on? No, stuck because of something behind it!

The chest mimic makes an almost perplexed grin at Hindle.

"Why, my name? I guess I never thought of one. I suppose the man always calls me 'Hello' and my friend here 'Bye.'"

The bed now moves with eyes popping out of the bed posts and the mattress lifting up to reveal large sharp teeth and a long green tongue, just as Brickowsky finishes getting on top of the bed!

Brickowsky, please roll a dexterity saving throw!

Brickowsky is too nimble and quick-thinking for "Bye" the bed mimic! As he attempts to climb on top of the bed, he feels the movement and nimbly jumps back far away enough to avoid the green tongue that snakes out to grab where he was just moments before.

"Aw shucks, can't blame a mimic for trying."

Hello the chest mimic grins at Brickowsky, but neither of the mimics make further attempts to eat anyone...yet.

"We answered your questions. You gonna feed us or be the food?"
Jul 17, 2024 2:22 am
Does anyone have those chicken wings?

Merton asks over the psychic link
Jul 17, 2024 5:26 am
"The barrel is downstairs. I'll go collect some." Hindle trundles off back down to the kitchen.

Unsure how hungry the thing is, Hindle loads up two large plates to heaping with wings ladeled from the barrel. He carries the back up to the room with the intentions of sliding each across the floor to the creature using his telekinesis.
Jul 17, 2024 6:12 am
"That's rather naughty." the wizard scolds the bed with a raised finger. Thanking Merton for his quick thinking, the dwarf finally climbs the munching mimic himself to solve the mystery of the stuck picture.
Jul 19, 2024 4:47 pm
The two mimics munch down happily on the chicken wings that Hindle telekinetically slides over to them. Merton and Leana keep a close eye on them as Brickowsky quickly climbs on the far end of the bed mimic to unhook the stuck picture. A key wrapped in paper behind the picture is stuck on the nail and Brickowsky takes that along.

The four adventurers gather near Roaring Kitty's corner as they peer over the picture, the key, and the paper it is wrapped in.

Brickowsky turns over the picture and on its back, in elegant cursive, is written "To Alax, all our love, Mom and Dad"

Merton examines the key. It is large in his halfling hand and the brass has darkened to almost a black with age. No unusual magic properties are detected as Hindle and Brickowsky take a closer look at it.

Leana unwraps the paper the key was wrapped in and a diagram for the secret passage they found in the basement is revealed! In the same cursive is written on the paper "Caution in the tower. Only venture inside when you are ready with your party."

We're about to move onto Scene 2! Anything else you guys want to do in Scene 1 before we move on? And how would you like to move onto Scene 2, through the tunnel in the basement or outside of the inn and tower?
Jul 21, 2024 6:54 am
OOC:
Maybe we should use the tunnel Leana found. :)

Does anybody need a short rest? Brickowsky is good to go, but wouldn't mind eating some chicken wings and drinking a beer or two at the bar before venturing deeper into this adventure. ;)
Jul 22, 2024 6:30 am
OOC:
Perhaps our short rest could be had discussing the "plan" as well as muching on wings and beer.

Hindle will opt for the tunnel first and tower second.

Sounds good, we’ll finish dealing with the spiders in scene 1 and you guys will short rest after as scene 2 prepares! I’m guessing Leana’s fox is still there as the hour hasn’t finished and then you guys can recover during the short rest.
Jul 23, 2024 8:46 pm
The adventuring group quickly agree to follow the note to the tower by heading through the basement. They'll secure the tunnel entrance before having a short rest in Inn Plain Sight. They hurry down the stairs while the mimics are still busy eating the hot wings. Brickowsky carefully places the picture on the table next to the bed while he folds away the note and key into the ugly bag.

*************************

Back in the basement, with a nod to Oswin's bones, they return to the tunnel entrance. Leana's shadowy fox is still standing guard and the entrance is still covered with ice. The spiders are nowhere in sight, but there is still skittering sounds indicating they are probably nearby. Perhaps some bait or a change in the situation will bring them forth.

Leana looks about while they walk around the Inn and the basement, but Derv is nowhere in sight. Perhaps he found another way into the tunnel or he went outside?
Jul 25, 2024 8:12 am
Waiting for his friends to come up with a quick strategy to attack to spiders while avoiding as much risk as possible, Brickowsky would send Roaring Kitty in. Together with Leana's shadowfox as a bait. As soon as the spiders appear, he would bamff the familiar out of the danger zone and start laying down magical hurt on the beasties. If there is a chance to find cover somewhere he would be most happy.
OOC:
Maybe we could use the summoned creature(s) as bait to get the spiders in the trap and then attack them with ranged attacks?
Jul 25, 2024 8:58 pm
Roaring Kitty paws at the ice barrier, ready to join with the shadowy fox to mess with the spiders and bring them closer to the party.
Jul 26, 2024 12:02 am
Merton rigs a cauldron full of the hot grease above the sewer entrance using rope and a cauldron/pot from the kitchen. He will climb to a high position out of sight of the entrance with the rope ready to pull it when the spiders enter.

Excellent and definitely sufficiently sneaky! You can describe the amazing success Merton has with his build once the spiders pass under with that roll.

Leana bids the shadowy creature to advance into the darkness. It growls and should draw the arachnids' attention. Meanwhile the young druid melts some of the water, so a vertical gap appears that is big enough to allow the fox to come out and two of the spiders at a time. In case there are too many, she reckons she can close the gap in time.

With an eerie clicking of her tongue against her teeth Leana whispers in the language of the beast: "Come out, come out. Or are you scared?" She steps back and waits for any sound, so she can be sure she calls back her animal spirit soon enough before it takes serious damage.
Jul 28, 2024 2:04 am
As Leana opens the vertical gap, Roaring Kitty bounds through and joins the shadowy fox into the darkness.

Brickowsky, Leana, and Hindle prepare for whatever comes out as Merton crouches out of sight, ready to douse the spiders in hot grease. Brickowsky takes extra care to crouch behind one of the barrels for extra cover.

Leana whispers in the language of the beast and Roaring Kitty and the fox can be heard scratching and making noises. The skittering heard faintly before now increases in frequency and volume and the two creatures swiftly move back out to join the adventuring party as two spiders scramble and spill out of the narrow gap.

@valdattaMadun Go ahead and describe your amazing success with the spiders!
OOC:
@Dhakhan, I have assumed your character is preparing with the others on the ground to take on the spiders, but please let me know if you want Hindle to do anything else.

The spiders didn't see it coming. As they scramble through the narrow opening, Merton's boiling grease quickly turns the spiders into karaage. Brickowsky's fire bolts bring the karaage spiders to just the right temperature and crisp as Leana with her fox expertly chops the karaage spiders into bite-sized pieces. The fox sniffs at a leg and starts crunching.

The crunching sounds echo down the tunnel, but nothing stirs. Based on Hindle's uncanny senses or perhaps a patron whispering quietly in the back of his mind, he is sure it will be safe for the group to short rest and regroup before they move into the tunnel. Feel free to describe what everyone does for their short rest and we will move onto Scene 2!

Leana calls the fox to her and gives thanks before releasing the spirit into its own realm. She then turns to Merton and states: "I'm sure the upper floor is more hospitable and maybe there is something left to drink?" The druid turns back upwards to the main room of the inn. She fills a tankard full of water and sprinkles some herbs inside before retiring to a cozy looking niche. There she takes off her boots, sits down on a padded bench cross-leggedly and lets her mind wander.
Jul 29, 2024 5:27 pm
Munching as well on the chicken bits, Brickowsky doesn't forget Roaring Kitty and feeds him some tendies as well.

For fingerfood they taste surprisingly good, he had to admit to himself, while seasoning them with some ale to battle the spiciness.

After some time he burps happily and announces: "Ready when you are."
