Chapter 2: Smoke on the Water

Feb 11, 2019 10:53 am
Late that evening, amidst the carousing, the sailors on lookout report to the captain, who then motions for Ian and Khiiral to go with him to the poop deck. Once there, the minotaur points his spyglass to starboard, at a small reddish spot on the horizon casting a faint glow against the still-overcast sky. It can only mean one thing: fire.

Valrakas hands the spyglass to Ian. "What d'ye reckon? Too small t' be another volcano. A burnin' ship, p'raps?"
OOC:
I am issuing another invitation for anyone who wishes to take an officer's position. Refer to this document. None of these positions NEED to be filled, but if anyone is interested, now is the time because you would also be in this scene. Exceptions would be the surgeon and the cook who would be busy with their duties at this time.
Feb 11, 2019 5:17 pm
Perhaps. May also be a trap.
Feb 11, 2019 7:28 pm
Captain Valrakas nods sagely. "My thinkin' as well. Still, better'n this monotony. Maintain our distance, keep an eye on it. Take 'nother look in daylight."

The minotaur scowls at the overcast sky. "I wish we could see th' fuckin' stars!"
Feb 11, 2019 7:39 pm
Aye...He sighs. Tis a bloody mess we're in
OOC:
(do they have a compass?
Feb 11, 2019 8:51 pm
"We get closer and I can send Domare over to see what this is. That or fly over. No sense getting ourselves in a mess."
Feb 11, 2019 11:31 pm
OOC:
I have edited the above so the quartermaster would have joined the captain and the first mate on the poop deck.

Nela, you would not have been there, but I will insert your suggestion to use Domare in the morning when the entire crew will have been made aware of the situation.
Feb 11, 2019 11:34 pm
Khiiral looks up at the overcast sky "Aye cap’n, I should be able to get us found once the sky clears."
Feb 12, 2019 1:35 am
That fire worries me....
Feb 12, 2019 4:31 am
Khiiral stares at the fire, resting his chin and hands on top of his unstrung longbow "It could be trouble. But no one gets rich on the high seas without getting into some trouble." he says with a smile. "Let’s go check it out."
Feb 12, 2019 11:55 am
bites his lip.
Get closer, but nae too close. If it is distress, do what we can. Stil fear a trap
Feb 12, 2019 7:40 pm
"Aye. Tell th' men, party's over. I want everyone well-rested tomorrow."
Feb 12, 2019 7:45 pm
Dawn breaks some hours later.* The cloud cover finally parts for the first time since the storm, revealing a pink and gold sky. Ribbons of smoke rise from the spot where the glow was in the night.

"It isn't a ship," Valrakas grunts as he squints at it through his spyglass, "it's a flotilla of small craft, all burning. Could still be a trap. Battle stations." The captain turns the Kestrel to starboard, headed for the flotilla with both the sun and the wind at her back.

On Nela's suggestion, Domare is sent flying ahead of the Kestrel.** The Kestrel makes 5 knots at full sail - you should come upon the flotilla in about half an hour.
OOC:
*Far less than 8 hours, but consider yourselves Long-Rested.

*How far ahead, Nela? Telepathic link and the ability to see through Domare's eyes both have maximum range of 100ft.
Feb 12, 2019 8:48 pm
OOC: Domare transmitting range is only 100'. It is best Nela fly over there at a high altitude and scout it on Shine.

Nela says to Cap, "I can fly there on shine and see what is what."
Feb 13, 2019 4:49 pm
"Go. But keep yer distance."

As Valrakas turns her to run downwind, the Kestrel leaps forward with a snap of the sails and a burst of sea spray. Though still missing a topmast, the agile ship makes good time and doesn't fall too far behind the vanguard, comprised of Nela, Shine, and Domare.

Nela counts five small outrigger craft of strange design, and a large, gaudily-painted one shaped like a water beetle that looks like it could carry several families. All appear to have been set ablaze in the night, and most are hardly more than charred husks now. Shine has to circle wide to avoid all the smoke. Curiously, she doesn't see any corpses on the wrecks, nor in the water.

Miraculously, survivors are spotted: an old woman with a baby in her arms huddles atop a piece of debris.

The Kestrel is 200 feet from the wrecks, and closing.
Feb 13, 2019 6:01 pm
Nela quickly flies back, "Lots of odd sea crafts burnt, but I spotted one survivor. Looks like we will find out what happened. Might want to bring her in slow."
Feb 13, 2019 7:06 pm
The woman waves frantically at Nela. "Help! Help us! Oh, thank goodness!"

The Kestrel coasts to a stop 30 feet away.
Feb 13, 2019 7:22 pm
"It might be best if I went down under the water here and took a look. Before we get too far?" Nela asks.
Feb 13, 2019 7:38 pm
"Please hurry!" the woman pleads. "They took everybody - dragged them under! They could still be around! Help us!" The baby starts crying.
OOC:
Everyone give me Perception rolls. What actions? Are you helping the woman and baby? How?

Half a dozen figures burst out of the water. Vaguely humanoid, with fish-like fins and claws. Utterly alien, these are monsters straight out of mariners' nightmares. Two of the creatures appear to be bestial men with tails and heads of ferocious sharks. The rest tower over the survivors with muscular humanoid bodies and vaguely human faces, but the tails, fins, and gills of monstrous fish.
[ +- ] Wereshark
[ +- ] Merrow
While the large fish-men shout and gesture aggressively at the Kestrel, the two shark creatures advance on the defenseless survivors. The woman starts screaming, trying in vain to protect the mewling babe.

Zale, who is swimming underwater towards the survivors, is set upon by two more of the shark creatures.

OOC: 21 Perception …. Require exact placement to cast spells.
OOC:
For this encounter we will not be using a combat grid and exact placements. If you are concerned about spell ranges and areas of effect, I will tell you this:

1. The debris field is about 30ft off the Kestrel's starboard bow.
2. The debris is spread across an area roughly 40ft x 40ft.
3. The 6 visible enemies and the 2 survivors are currently clustered together close to the near edge of the debris, in an area approximately 20ft x 20ft, with the survivors in the center.
4. Zale and his two foes are underwater. Treat as heavily obscured.

These are all approximations. If you tell me what you intend,  we can work it out.

Round 1:

Battle Music

Everything happens in the blink of an eye. As the woman pleads for help, Zale dives into the water, spurred on by an urge known only to him. Sea-monsters burst from the sea confirming the woman's warnings. Ian shoots one in the chest, Nela calls down a bolt of lighting, and Khiiral shoots one of the weresharks dead. Grog struggles with one of the cannons. The targets are too low and too close, the cannonball will surely overshoot them. Underwater, Zale evades his pursuers and makes for the survivors. As Jack arrives on deck, Valrakas' voice is heard above the din.

"Shake out th' reefs! Full sail! Fly th' spinnaker!" the captain roars. "We're runnin', dammit!" the minotaur has heard all the stories, has some idea what's coming next, but it's too late. The merrow leader raises its cutlass, and surges forward with its two lieutenants. The merrows lob seashells onto the Kestrel's deck at the base of the mast. The shells shatter, and their contents burst into flames. (3x Alchemist's Fire)

The snaggle-toothed wereshark throws a net over the woman and child, and prepares to drag them both under the waves. The wereshark temporarily serves as a body shield for the fourth merrow, which points its purple tentacle whip at the ship, and levels two spells at its minotaur captain. The sound of crashing waves washes across the deck, but instead of crying out in pain, Valrakas merely laughs, even as a floating, spectral trident materializes and takes a stab at him, missing by mere inches. (Toll the Dead & Spiritual Weapon)

To Zale's surprise, the two weresharks that charged him do not pursue. They ignore him and swim away, in the direction of the Kestrel's rudder. He sees that they carry a length of massive chain between them.

Zale hesitates, torn between saving the survivors and warning his crewmates about the saboteurs. The hesitation is momentary. In the first place, he dove in without a thought because the endangered woman and child struck a chord in him. A caring mother (or grandmother - this woman looks a bit old) is something Zale never had. And of course, how could anyone, saint or pirate, allow a baby to become fish-food?!

Zale bursts out of the water and kicks the wereshark's nerve center right behind the knee. Then follows up with a flurry of strikes to the midsection.

Round 2: Enemies

Battle Music

Valrakas draws his cutlass against the floating trident, but the merrow cleric is still paralyzed by Zale's nerve jab, and the spectral weapon just hovers by the captain, inert. "Steady, lads! Their trap ain't sprung yet! This is just th' beginni--"

Valrakas is cut off as four grapnels clatter onto the poop deck and hold fast to the stern rail. Several shark-headed figures clamber aboard, led by a hulking hammerhead. Off the starboard bow, the merrow captain lobs another fire-bomb at the ship, then raises his gold cutlass and dives. The trident-wielding lieutenant follows suit. Four small fires dot the deck now, billowing acrid smoke. The other lieutenant dives as well, but not before attempting to harpoon Khiiral. Being the only one in the water, Zale alone sees that the three merrows are headed in the direction of the Kestrel's stern, where the ship's rudder appears to have been chained to a huge, turtle-like creature.
OOC:
Zale: If Nela uses Control Water to create a 20-ft wave as per the spell's description to crash down onto the deck, then yes, you can swim it. But be aware that a wave like that might wash crew members into the sea.

Nela: Yes, you can cast a different spell and maintain Concentration on Call Lightning as long as the new spell does not require Concentration. See here.
Mar 3, 2019 8:01 pm
Shine takes off from deck safely to the air, but still around the ship from above with Nela riding. Domare goes to the air and is going around the ship looking for more problems at a safe height. Nela concentrates on holding her Call Lightning and makes the waters near the rise up and wash over the deck. She is bring up only 3' of water so as not to wash away anyone, but more than enough to put out. She watches and makes sure all the fires are put out. If she sees her crew mate wanting to swim up, she will make sure there is water there boost him up to the deck safely.

Control Water is a concentration spell. If you cast it, you lose concentration on Call Lightning. There is no saving throw to prevent this. The DC 10 CON save to maintain concentration is for when you take damage or are potentially distracted by your surroundings.

Round 3: Valrakas and Jack

Battle Music

With a bellow of rage, Valrakas lowers his horned head and charges the hammerhead. Sparks fly from the minotaur's copper-tipped horns as he gores the wereshark in the thigh. The captain then slashes at the creature's belly with his cutlass before ramming it hard in the chest, sending the fish-man flying over the rail and into the water.

Horns (Reckless): 5 piercing
Cutlass (Reckless): 5 slashing
Storm of Fury: 5 lightning damage
Hammering Horns: Success

With blinding speed, Jack goes to his captain's aid and unleashes a flurry of stabs and slashes at the sharkmen. The fighter nails the blackfin several times, but neither the half-elf's nor the minotaur's weapons seem to be able to wound these creatures as effectively as expected.

I image Kitty is at the side of the boat wish to get out of the water. I doubt it can actually climb aboard that or it is looking for wreckage to climb aboard and get out of the water that way.
Mar 8, 2019 11:01 pm
OOC:
Kitty is on the port side of the boat. All the floating debris is on the starboard. Do you want Kitty to try swimming to the other side? The saber-tooth doesn't have a swim speed, so it will be half speed (20 ft) per round.

In any case, Kitty will take the Dodge action.
Mar 8, 2019 11:04 pm
I would image the number one thought in her mind is to get out of the water as cats hate the water. Since it can't get on the boat, it would swim around it to get to the wreckage.

Round 4: Enemies
Battle Music

As the fight breaks out on the poop deck, the Kestrel suddenly lurches and begins moving backwards! Off the stern, chains attached to the rudder are pulled taught as a massive creature, part dragon, part turtle, begins towing the vessel to some unknown destination under the guidance of the two merrow lieutenants.

Regaining control of its limbs, the spellcaster surges forward to catch up with the ship. With a sweeping gesture followed by a clenched fist takes another stab at Valrakas with the floating trident, (5 piercing damage) drawing blood, and whipping the weresharks into a frenzy. Then, the merrow casts a baleful curse on the crew members at the rail. (Casting Bane. Phillip saves, Ian and Khiiral fail. 1d4 penalty on attacks & saves)

Barking commands while waving his golden cutlass in the air, the merrow captain rallies his troops. (Rally Maneuver: Scarface regains 3hp)

With renewed vigor, the scarred wereshark that Zake encountered earlier leaps over rail, and bites a chunk out of Valrakas (5 piercing) before throwing a net over the minotaur. (Valrakas is Restrained)

Folowing its buddy over the rail is the eyepatch-wearing wereshark. It falls upon the captain with its jaws (Mislabeled roll. 15 vs. AC hits: 6 piercing damage), and a vicious, two-handed stab with its crude trident. (6 piercing)

The Blackfin retaliates against Jack with a sweep of its tail and a quick thrust with its wickedly barbed harpoon. The tail swipe rocks the fighter (8 bludgeoning) but he manages to maintain his footing. It's enough to create an opening for the harpoon, which catches him in the side (7 piercing). The wereshark yanks on the line in an attempt to drag the half-elf overboard, but Jack proves too strong.

Sixgill faces off against Grog, sweeping with its tail and slashing with its rusty cutlass. (miss and hit. 2 slashing after DR)

The grapnel lines go taut as Hammerhead and Mako attempt to climb back up the stern. Meanwhile, four new grappling hooks clatter onto the deck, and are pulled secure against the port rail, promising the arrival of more boarders!

Jack redoubles his efforts but the Blackfin proves an elusive opponent, and the half-elf's rapier barely pricks it on the shoulder once. Hit, miss, miss. 4 piercing damage vs. Blackfin.

Lightning arcs from Valrakas' burnished horns towards his captors as he struggles to free himself, but the electrified horns are fouled in the net. Eyepatch takes 7 lightning damage.

Round 5: Enemies
Battle Music

The Kestrel shudders as she is dragged backward with each powerful stroke of the the draconic turtle's flippers. The huge beast raises its head and blows scalding steam into the air as the merrow lieutenants prod it onward.

The merrow leader swims back and forth, waving its gold cutlass, barking commands. (Commander's Strike: Hammerhead makes a third attack using its reaction, 7 added to damage.)

Off the starboard bow, the merrow cleric tries to wriggle free of its entanglement. Having lost sight of Valrakas, it stabs blindly with the floating trident. (Advantage against Restrained target canceled by Disadvantage against unseen target: 5 piercing damage)

On the poop deck, Eyepatch bites a chunk out of Valrakas, shoulder, then thwacks the back of the minotaur's knees with its tail, sending the the captain sprawling. Valrakas Prone. 3 bludgeoning, 5 piercing

Laughing maniacally, Scarface stabs at the downed captain twice (4+3 piercing). Then Eyepatch & Scarface start hauling the nearly unconscious captain towards the stern rail, leaving a trail of blood on the deck.

Mako & Hammerhead leap onto the deck and whip Phillip across the ribs with their tails. (Hit & hit: 4+4 bludgeoning) Mako then stabs him in the leg with its harpoon. The wereshark yanks on the line but the barb tears away from Phillip's leg, and the angry tourist keeps his footing, (Hit. 4 piercing. Phillip wins STR contest) but is left wide open for the Hammerhead's ferocious slashes with its massive cutlass. (Hit & hit: 7+3 slashing)

Blackfin hits Jack with a glancing blow using its tail. (5 bludgeoning damage) Again, the hardy half-elf sailor stays upright, and the wereshark miscalculates with its harpoon thrust.

Sixgill tries to knock Grog off is feet, but the raging dwarf is steady as a rock, (5 bludgeoning damage) and the wereshark's rusty cutlass hardly even scratches him! (4 slashing damage)

Still dripping vitriol from Nela's spell, four more werehsarks clamber over the port rail. (Chum, Flotsam, and Jetsam take 16 acid damage)

Bait and Chum hurl their harpoons angrily at Nela. Bait's wild throw sends its weapon into the rigging, impossible to retrieve without climbing. Chum has better aim, and the barbed weapon buries itself in the doctor's side. (6 piercing) The wereshark hauls mightily on the line, yanking Nela off her steed and sending her plummeting from the sky. She hits the deck hard. (10 bludgeoning damage, and Prone) Miraculously, she is able to stay conscious, and focused on her spell.

Flotsam advances on Khiiral and tries to knock the archer's bow out of his hands, but the nimble elf is too fast, and the wereshark's cutlass doesn't even come close.

Grinning widely, Jetsam goes after Ian. The wereshark captures the First Mate in its net. Luckily, its vicious swipe with its hook-hand misses Ian's eye. (Ian is Restrained)

Round 6: Zale, Nela, Ian

Zale rams the spellcaster with the force of a speeding narwhal, and is just as deadly. Its ribcage crushed, the merrow goes limp and begins to slowly sink still wrapped in the net. On the poop deck, the floating trident winks out of existence.

Her palms torn, blood seeping from the wound in her side Nela clings to the rigging desperately.

Ian fails to wriggle free from the net.

Well, she's safely in the rigging for now (see status tracker), so not prone. Are you considering letting go and dropping down 25ft? You'd take damage again (1d6 bludgeoning). I'll say you can fall on your feet given the new circumstances.

But Shine could come get you, couldn't she? You'd still need to leap over to her from the rigging. Acrobatics DC 16.
Mar 16, 2019 7:49 pm
OOC:
Okay, I will grab the tentacle whip, and swim after the Kestrel. Going for the ropes the weresharks used to climb aboard.

OOC:
Nela:
Okay. Great use of Misty Step, and it only requires a bonus action, so I see how you would think you can use your action to cast Cure Wounds, but you can't cast both these spells on the same turn.

Here's the relevant text from page 202 of the Player's Handbook:
Quote:
Casting Time
Most spells require a single action to cast, but some
spells require a bonus action, a reaction, or much more
time to cast.

Bonus Action
A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You
must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell,
provided that you haven’t already taken a bonus action
this turn. You can’t cast another spell during the same
turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
So tell me what you want to do.
Zale:
You can use it without proficiency (martial weapon proficiency is required). It's a magic item that requires attunement, so if you or anyone were to use it during this battle, it would only function as a regular whip.
Mar 16, 2019 9:18 pm
OOC:
I see. Can she cast the cantrip frostbite at the one that harpooned her off shine the first time. It is range 60' and it is a CON save 16 DC or take 2d6 cold damage and disadvantage on the next weapon attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Call it returning the favor.
Mar 16, 2019 9:40 pm
Nela while hang on the rigging calls for Shine to fly by her and with a word when Shine is close, she suddenly disappears and reappears mounted on Shine. She glares at the harpooner. Then says an arcane word and points it him. On him forms a numbing frost freezing and slowing him. Then she sends Shine to a good 70' above the combat hopefully out of harpoon range.
OOC:
Nela as a bonus action casts Misty Step (verbal only spell) to teleport to Shine. Then casts cantrip Frostbite (v,s) "LOL" 2 HP of cold damage then takes Shine 70' above the ship.

Mar 19, 2019 9:01 pm
The Kestrel is being dragged slowly, so Kitty is able to keep up. There's no telling how long her stamina will hold up if nothing is done to get her on board.

It's strange that the merrows now seem intent on taking the Kestrel as a prize, when just a few moments ago they were lobbing fire bombs onto its deck. Perhaps the fires were meant to drive the crew into the water rather than actually burn the ship? But what of the charred flotilla? Why were they burned rather than taken?

Khiiral levels his dragon pistol at the weresharks crowding him and Ian on the main deck. The elf pulls the trigger, and the weapon roars. Flotsam manages to duck, but Bait and Chum eat lead.

Round 6: Enemies
Battle Music

The dragon turtle slowly picks up speed under the goading of the trident-wielding merrow lieutenant, whose weapon now appears to be glowing.

The merrow captain now raises a conch to its lips and blows a single, low note rallying the weresharks on board the Kestrel. (Rally Maneuver: Eyepatch gains 7 temp hp.)

Amidships, Bait seems about to kick away the bow at the Khiiral's feet, but the wereshark sweeps its tail at the elf's knees instead, sending him sprawling! (9 bludgeoning + Prone) The wereshark then scoops up its fallen buddy's cutlass and opens a gash in the Quartermaster's exposed back. (7 slashing.)

As Ian continues to struggle in the net, Jetsam slashes at him with its hook hand. (6 slashing.) Luckily, the First Mate is able to dodge the wereshark's chomping jaws.

Up on the poop deck, the Blackfin manages to knock Jack down, and take a big, bloody bite out of him! Jack is in trouble! (10 bludgeoning + 21 piercing. Jack goes Prone. CON save vs. lycanthropy: SUCCESS!)

The Hammerhead strikes carelessly at Grog with its tail & huge cutlass before striding away towards Valrakas. (5 bludgeoning + 6 slashing damage.)

As Phillip backpedals, Mako harpoons him in the chest, but is unable to pull him close. The wereshark chases after the tourist and rocks him with its tail, but Phillip is able to stay on his feet. (2 piercing. Phillip wins STR contest. 6 bludgeoning.) The Mako then turns to join its mates at the stern rail.

Mako, Eyepatch, and Hammerhead work in tandem to heave Valrakas overboard.

As he swims up next to Kitty alongside the Kestrel, Zale sees the captain fall into the water.
OOC:
Grog, Jack, and Phillip are up for Round 7.

Grog, and Jack may take OAs vs. Mako or Hammerhead. Phillip may take OA vs. Mako only.

Round 7: Enemies
Battle Music

The merrow captain rights itself but when it lashes out at Valrakas, its golden cutlass swishes through nothing but water. The two lieautenants rush to their leader's aid. One thrusts its glowing, aquamarine trident at Valrakas and Zale. (Trident misses Valrakas, but hits Zale takes: 5 piercing damage. Bite misses.) The other merrow hurls its harpoon at the raging minotaur. The weapon hits, but Valrakas is too strong for the merrow to reel in. (Valrakas takes 5 piercing damage)

With its handlers occupied, the dragon turtle slows and turns its head curiously towards the melee in its wake.

Suddenly finding itself alone on the main deck against Ian and Kitty, Bait slashes at the saber-tooth with its cutlass and chomps at the First Mate before turning to dive over the port rail. (Kitty takes 8 slashing damage. Ian takes 24 piercing. Do you use Uncanny Dodge to halve that, or take an OA against Bait? CON save vs. Lycanthropy: SUCCESS! Kitty's OA misses.)

Angered by the unexpected beating by the pegasus, Blackfin thwacks the winged steed with its tail, but Shine easily dances out of the way. The wereshark then stabs its rider with its wickedly barbed harpoon. (No advantage on tail sweep. Miss. Harpoon hits. Nela takes 8 piercing damage, but stays mounted and maintains concentration.)

Eyepatch and Mako gang up on Grog. Eyepatch's net sails over the dwarf, but he gets tail-whipped behind the knees and bitten twice. The wolf-raised barbarian feels an inexplicable quickening in his blood accompanied by a briny taste in his mouth, and the roaring of ocean waves in his ears. (Grog takes 4 bludgeoning damage, and 5+7 piercing damage. CON save vs. Lycanthropy FAILS! Inspiration reroll?)

Jack, Grog, Phillip, and Nela: It could be your imagination, but you think you just saw the dead Hammerhead's gigantic cutlass briefly melt into a puddle of quicksilver, reform into a rapier, then a greataxe, then a war-club, and back into a cutlass, all in the space of a couple of eye blinks.

Grog howls in frenzy as he feels the teeth of the fish-breathed cretins dig into his flesh. In that moment before he shrugged off the fell disease, some might've heard something like, "Oh, the sweet blood, it sings to me..." through the inane sounds. Grog hacks away at the two weresharks remaining at the stern rail. Eyepatch goes down in a fountain of blood, and the dwarf's greataxe bites deep into the Mako's side as well before it gets its skull crushed by Phillip's greatclub.
(Three massive hits from Grog! 12 + 9 + 13 slashing.)
(Two hits from Phillip! 6 + 4 bludgeoning.)

Kitty bounds up the stairs and pounces on the Blackfin, knocking the wereshark prone.
(5 slashing + 4 piercing)

Nela and Shine's defense, Kitty's sudden arrival give Jack a chance to catch his breath and grab the shifting sword, which changes shape once more, coalescing into a silvery rapier in his hands.
(Gains 15hp, and a silvered rapier.)

In the water, the merrow captain takes a bite to the face from his own lieutenant before Zale's expert strikes cause it to seize up, unable to move its limbs! Zale hands Valrakas a healing draught. Hopefully the captain will get a chance to use it!

Round 9

After a brutal bloodbath, the Kestrel's deck is won, but the ship is still tethered to a monster, which seems just as unhappy as anyone about it being chained to the rudder. From the stern rail, most of the crew watch helplessly as a desperate underwater fight rages on with three merrow warriors pitted against a nearly bled-out minotaur and a drunken genasi. Having grabbed the merrow captain's golden cutlass, Valrakas refuses to back down. Meanwhile, Zale has deprived the fish-men of their Trident of Fish Command.

Nela demandingly calls forth to her faithful Shine, I need you with me now., and then takes a heroic swan dive off the ship into the cold ocean waters below for her beloved Cap. She isn't letting go of him just yet. He's her captain and friend. Besides who else trust her fully.

Domore flies out 30' above the sea water near her Nela in obvious concern, but doesn't feel the need to do any swimming or sacrificing itself. It watches Nela's backside and such to aid her if she needs as it while examining the water below.

Shine hurryingly flies over and cannon ball dives into the ocean to attack too. (You can roll the attack.)

Probably Nela words will cause Kitty hearing this to come to the rail to investigate and see what is happening. Not sure if Kitty has enough concern to dive into the waters, that evil thang, even though she feels strangely enough that she can breath it as she sees Shine dives into the water for her Nela aid. (Your call if she will join the attack. Appears she is done with killing everything on the deck. Lycanthrope is bad eating, but Triton is special finicky tuna.)

There next to her Cap, Nela brings forth her most powerful healing that she can muster right now. Nela calls upon the sea itself to empower her. (She is after all a druid and believes in the elements not a god.) She places her impowered hand upon Cap's unconscious and dying body to bring forth greater life and soul to him. (Smiles. See. The water answers. Blink. Blink.)

She demandingly yells at the Dragon Turtle in common They can't control YOU. You are FREE. Let go my SHIP. She hopes that if it can't understand her words perhaps it can understand her intentions and she hopes it realize it is free anyway. She feels bad for the Dragon Turtle being abused. (She is a big animal lover. Even for a Dragon Turtle.)

It is obvious to the those present that she can indeed breath water despite her more bestial appearance. She looks quite unusual and probably nothing that the enemy or the dragon turtle has ever seen before. Shifter just don't go into the sea. They are very much land loving critters, but she unlike most has always lived on coastal area. Sea is no stranger to her.

She also shoves her best weapon, a scimitar, in Cap's free hand while doing all this knowing that he will require a weapon very soon. What a good ship's captain without a decent weapon.(assuming that is possible)

The minotaur pushes Nela's scimitar away. She knows his horns are far deadlier weapons than most swords.

Nela tries to make demands of the turtle dragon, but it doesn't seem to understand the common tongue. In fact, the aquatic monster doesn't even seem to notice the shifter at all. The Kestrel lurches again as the creature strains against the chains. Domare swoops over the water as Shine plunges into the waves to fight by Nela's side, but though the druid's spell lets the pegasus breathe water, it's just too awkward outside of its element, and misses the merrow with its hooves.

Someone do something bout the bloody turtle!
Seeing no enemies, and not keen on getting wet, moves back to the railing to wait for a visible target

Swimming as fast as he can while the merrows give chase, Zale looks back at the dragon turtle. He sees intelligence in its eyes - this is no dumb beast. Somewhere far back in Zale's ancestry was a denizen of the deep, perhaps even a water elemental. Drawing from deep within, he tries to recall the aquan tongue.

"Noble one, this is the trident they have been using to bend you to their will. I refuse to use it to curtail your freedom. Help us fight these who have wronged you, and I swear by the sea in my blood that we will help loose you from your chains and destroy this profane weapon forever!"

Phillip shouts in the face of the creature. "AHhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" Switfly he picks him up an gingerly slams him down on phillps bent knee. Philip smiles a bit at the audible sound of the bones snapping. Not sure if its his knee or the spine either way Phillip is dertermined to get some answer he scans the deck of the ship and spots Ian.

Round 10: Ian, Phillip, Zale

As those on the poop deck argue, the rest of the crew mill about on the main deck. Some of them are wounded from the wereshark attack. With the captain missing, without orders from the first mate, Ian, nor the quartermaster, Khiiral, and the argument around the helm, there is general confusion and grumbling disquiet among the sailors.

"Orders, sir?"
"Ow! Me fucken arm! Where's the surgeon?"
"...help the Cap'n..."
"Do we throw these corpses overboard, or..."
"...can't just stand around...bloody do sumthin!"
"Drop anchor, maybe?"
"Fool! We'd be torn apart!"
"DRAGON?! Where? We're gonna die!!!"

Those underwater see the dragon turtle turn towards Zale, open its maw, and spout a jet of burning steam in his direction...but the genasi is not the target! The steam engulfs the two merrows, blistering their skin! (M2 & M3 take 54 damage).

Jabes.plays.RPG sent a note to campeador
All hands are eventually accounted for on board. The captain is a bloody mess, and retires to his cabin, leaving Ian and the other officers in charge.

The woman who was rescued with the baby thank all of you profusely, but weep for some of the weresharks who were once men from her village before they were bitten and turned. Magda is her name, and she says the child, Lena, is not hers, but a friend's. Their village is a league and a half north of here. She and her companions (basketweavers, fruit farmers, silversmiths) were on their way to sell their wares at the Floating Market when they were attacked.

Where do you sail?

Magda's and Lena's village is a safe place where you can make repairs and rest up. Did she say silvermiths? Yes, she did.

The Floating Market is where you can most likely buy and sell anything you need, and plenty of things you don't. When Magda is shown your sea maps, she doesn't recognize anything. She says their maps look totally different. You can find some, and perhaps speak with other sailors, at the Floating Market.

There might be a third option, depending on Zale's interaction with the dragon turtle.

OOC:
I share this with the ship's officers, and with a select few crew mates. (In other words, with all the PCs but no one else).

Apr 4, 2019 4:28 pm
At first, Valrakas isn't too happy about letting a powerful weapon go to waste, but when it's explained to him that this was the price for the dragon turtle's aid in that crucial moment, he doesn't protest any further. At any rate, he's too tired to argue.

As none of you have any particular knowledge of matters arcane, you'll have to seek help figuring out how to destroy it. Chelonax doesn't want to take it, but says her mom might know what to do with it.

So what'll it be? Magda's village? The Floating Market? Chelonax's mom? Something else?
Apr 4, 2019 5:32 pm
Seems to me if Chelonax's mother may know how to destroy it, we should utilize that information. Zale, would Chelonax be able to ensure our craft's safety if we head that direction? If not, we should return Magda to her village and then be gone from this tract of sea. Jack says after relinquishing control of the helm back to the officers.

Grog seems groggy from the fight. He doesn't seem to very injured, having sustained what he would consider little knicks. He listens to the babble, not really offering anything helpful; that is, even if he was able to.

He heard the shiny word 'silver' and got excited, but upon hearing that they may go for the dragon turtle's mummy first, he let off a big stomp to get their attention.

"Grog! Shiny!"

He then points to his greataxe.

"Grog no like bitey men, bitey men no like shiney! Shiney make Grog axe! "

With the decision made, you set your course east with Chelonax leading the way. "I didn't mean to break your boat, honest! They were making me do it!"

The crew remains vigilant against another ambush, but no threats appear for a good while.

Magda seems very interested in everything on the ship, particularly the captain. She says she's never seen a minotaur before. She also spends time at the prow, wind whipping her wispy grey hair, watching Chelonax. While she carries the baby, Lena, in her arms the whole time, she doesn't seem very motherly. She confesses she never married, and never had children.

Chelonax says she's never known any other dragon turtles apart from her mom. But she's very young, barely even a century old! She's very curious about surface dwellers but her mom forbids her to approach any of their settlements or their boats, so Chelonax is glad to have met all of you. Her mom's name is Alcyestris.

Halfway to where Alcyestris was last seen, a lifeboat is sighted. It seems to be missing its oars. The little craft bobs up and down on the waves, drifting along the ocean currents directly in the Kestrel's path. There is only one occupant.

"Ahoy!" a pale skin human with short Raven hair and oddly a full red beard stands in the lifeboat. She puts on a large hat with a feather in it and continues waving to get the attention of the passing ship. "Ahoy!, I am Captain manybeards, surrender your vessel and I will allow you to be part of my crew!" she yells from the lifeboat with "The Minnow" crudely carved in the side.

Zale, who has been spending more and more time in the water with Chelonax, swims over to the lifeboat and its odd occupant. "Ahoy! Permission to come aboard?" Looking up at the Kestrel, Zale gestures for a line to be thrown to bring boat and occupant onto the ship.

Nela says referring to Cap, He's not all that bad, but I must say he has seen better days. With her attention to Jineer, Don't see how he could find it in his heart not to help you in some way. Can't rightly say what that aid might be, but it has to be better than your current sailing life. Doesn't appear Nela is thrilled with thinking Jineer is a captain or accept it. Treats her more like a lost soul on the seas.

The Kestrel makes good time and covers the three leagues in an hour and a half, but Alcyestris is nowhere to be seen. You patrol the area for several more hours. Just when you begin to wonder whether this was a bad, futile idea, a call comes down from the crow's nest, "Land, ho!" Sure enough, a sizable island is sighted to the north.

"There she is! That's mom!" Chelonax cries happily. At first, you don't understand, but then the island begins to move closer faster than the Kestrel's movement can account for, and then it begins to make sense. Finally, an ancient, scaled head breaks the water's surface.

Apr 16, 2019 6:39 am
"Oh! Right." Chelonax giggles as she swims forward. "These are my new friends, mom. Can I keep them?"

"No, you most certainly may not keep them!" Alcyestris replies sternly. "Surfacers are filthy, disgusting things! Ugh! Now, get out of the way so I can steam them. And then you are going to get a cleansing in the sulfur vent, young lady!"

Okay but we seen land. So I guess you should come and see too. She heads backup and probably glad not to heard the turtle was going to do us all in.

Zale translates for Ian and adds, in Aquan, "Evil creatures sought to enslave Chelonax with this!" he raises the trident in a gesture of offering. "We've come to return Chelonax to you, mighty Alcyestris, and also to ensure this weapon never enslaves another innocent creature ever again!"

Hoping that Zale is helping nods.

Alcyestris roars when she sees the trident. To your relief, she vents the steam she was about to cook you with harmlessly into the sky. Terrified, Magda and some of the deck hands dive for cover. Seething with anger, the dragon turtle hisses, "They dared use that on my daughter?! Show them to me, and I'll give them a piece of my mind! They better not--"
Apr 18, 2019 5:27 am
"They were merrows, mom," Chelonax interjects, "and weresharks! My new friends here killed lots of the weresharks, and I steamed the merrows real good, but they got away."

"We were hoping you'd know how to destroy the trident."
Apr 18, 2019 11:33 am
"You're all fools to give up the trident!" Magda hisses, "Imagine what you could do with beasts like these doing your bidding! You would rule the seas!"
OOC:
Last chance. Are you really giving Alcyestris the trident to destroy?
Apr 18, 2019 11:56 am
Nela ducks for cover as she come back to deck. She is a bit shocked as the manner the big turtle is now.

We donae go back on a promise
Apr 18, 2019 1:22 pm
"The First Mate is right." Zale growls at Magda. "A promise was made, and I, for one, intend to honor it." The genasi communicates the same to the ancient dragon turtle. "We seek your counsel how best to destroy it, and how to defeat the merrows should we encounter them again."

"Oh, good grief!" Alcyestris huffs. "Alright, I'll help you. No, do not toss that horrid thing at me!"

"There's a great forge in the depths where the king of the tritons fashions powerful weapons with which to arm his knights. You take that trident to King Kholnos, along with this token, and tell him you promised me you'd destroy them both. Sail northwest of here until you come to the Great Gyre. Sail into it, and you'll enter the tritons' domain."

"Mark my words, I WILL know if you break your promise!" Alcyestris warns. "I'll find you, and you will regret it. Now, shoo!"

The great dragon turtle then begins fussing over her daughter and pays you no more mind. Chelonax waves a flipper at you before the two disappear underneath the waves.
Apr 18, 2019 4:35 pm
"The Great Gyre?!" Magda balks, "That place is tendays from here, and spells death, as any mariner knows! The good news is, my village is on the way. So if you lads are really eager to die, drop me off first, if you'd be so kind!"

"Maybe you should hold onto this then." Zale says, handing Ian the trident. "And I took this off the spellcaster." he adds, whipping out the purple tentacle whip. "I don't know what it does, but I'm not much good with whips. Not a big fan of sushi either."

After the first mate takes the trident, Zale gives the tentacle rod to the good doctor. Relieved to be unburdened of those two items, Zale sits staring at the strange token, turning it in his hands and occasionally taking a drink from his flask.

Say!? Whats going on, why did that island shrink?"
Apr 20, 2019 12:27 am
"That island was no island! It was a dragon turtle!" Magda eyes the trident and the tentacle changing hands. She made her opinion clear before - she thinks you should've enslaved both dragon turtles and ruled these seas. She thinks you're all fools for acting otherwise.
