Chapter 1.1: It's Dangerous to go Alone...

Apr 21, 2016 12:59 pm
The six of you arrive at the tomb entrance, a hand carved archway topped with twin dragons, and a sphere for the keystone, set over a natural cavern. Vines and moss cover the entryway, and the forest behind you blocks the view of the road. It's about mid-afternoon now, and the trek here was fairly boring. What do you do?
OOC:
Marching Order:

Toshi Xulara
Garn
Hegy Maia Istariel
Dahlia

Does that look right to everyone?
Apr 21, 2016 2:15 pm
I make pleasant conversation along the way, tailoring topics to suit my companions' interests as I was taught to do so long ago. Always listen to what others have to say. Their opinions are far more important than yours will ever be.

Once we stand in front of the entrance of the tomb, I turn towards Dahlia. "You got anything we can use against undead?"
Apr 21, 2016 2:17 pm
Maia etches a few runes in the air around Istariel with her finger, attempting to ward him from harm.
OOC:
Mage Armor on Istariel. Let me know when it's been an hour! 3/4 Lvl. 1 slots remain
When she's finished, she follows behind Garn, knowing he'll be the first to hear if the scouts report trouble.
OOC:
Looks good to me!
Apr 21, 2016 7:51 pm
OOC:
Once everyone makes a post, I'll move you guys into the tomb.
Apr 21, 2016 8:07 pm
"I'll be right behind you," he says to Toshi and Xulara
Apr 21, 2016 8:57 pm
Toshi nods and begins inspecting the entranceway for traps or any other unpleasant surprises. If he finds nothing, he stalks quietly into the tomb. He needs no torch or lantern - his feline eyes serve him well in the darkness.

Following close behind Garn the thought of entering a dark tomb without light seems a little likely to get everyone good and dead. Tapping on Garn's shoulder she'll whisper, "Light?"
Apr 21, 2016 10:39 pm
Toshi and Xulara see no traps as they approach the entrance. As everyone walks in torches spaced about 40 ft apart light up, turning the dark cavern into a well lit tomb.
Apr 21, 2016 10:40 pm
I can see fine in the dark if we are trying to maintain stealth. I have some special combat skills that will work on the undead. But I am out of healing for the day. We awoke injured and unsure so I did my best to get everyone ready for emergency combat. Alas it may bite us back in here."
OOC:
Sorry about missing the new thread and making everyone wait.
Apr 21, 2016 10:48 pm
"Alright, no one can die today then. Simple enough." I glance briefly at the map once more. "We've got some skeletons in this first room. Keep your eyes out for them."

These people are making too much noise! Toshi admonishes everyone silently with a finger to his lips before slinking quietly forward.
OOC:
Moving stealthily, and actively checking for traps. You want periodic checks every few feet or something?

Also, should Toshi and Xulara be making redundant checks or should one just take the Aid action to give the other a bonus? I think Xulara is better at Perception than Toshi.

If you are actively checking for traps in each room/corridor, make one roll for each room/corridor you enter.

For anyone who has Trapsense, I would normally make a private roll for that ability...but sense the ones who would normally have trap sense have Danger Sense instead, I won't have to do that. Mu. Ha. Ha. Ha.

As you walk through the entry hallway into the first room, you find yourselves in a well-lit chamber about 40x40 feet. There are three exits to this room: one to the north of you, one to the south, and one to the southeast. Xulara, you see in the northeast corner of the room the chest mentioned in Perrin's notes. You and Toshi also notice the 8 human skeletons that litter the floor between you and said chest. The skeletons are not moving, and do not appear to give any inclination of doing so any time soon.
OOC:
If everyone is trying to be stealthy in here, please roll your stealth checks accordingly. I've got Xulara's and Toshi's...I just need one from everyone else.

Toshi, you and Xulara become the shadows...moving in absolute silence through the halls. Even Dahlia is somewhat silent in her bulky armor. Hegy and Maia move with grace, and Istariel is a leaf on the wind.

And then there's Garn, who despite his best efforts, can't contain the sneezing fit that overtakes him. The chamber rings with the loud noises coming from Garn's sinuses...and shortly thereafter, with the clatter of bones as all 8 human skeletons rise up. Roll initiative.

The skeletons are basically scattered across the floor of this particular chamber. I'll have to try and put together a map to show where everyone is when the combat starts, if I get the chance this evening.

Also, again, it's well lit. You don't have to listen for them. It's very easy to see in here, even without your darkvision :P

Round 1

Everyone bursts into action. Istariel follows Toshi, with Maia on his heels, and tries to slam after Toshi strikes...unfortunately, Toshi's attack completely destroys the skeleton, knocking bones everywhere. Hegy scores a direct hit on her target, and while she sees bone chips fly, all it seems to do is tangle her crossbow bolt in the thing's ribs. Dahlia manages to score what would normally be a hit on someone flesh and blood, but her axe gets tangled in the ribcage for just a moment before she gets it free.

Seven skeletons remaining, they all move to attack. Hegy's target moves in and slashes with sharp claws, dealing a vicious blow (10 damage). Istariel is hit as well, but he manages to dance back before the claws go too deep (3 damage), and dodging another attack from the side. Dahlia and Garn successfully hold off the ones that go against them, fending them off with shield and greatsword respectively.

Xulara strikes from the shadows, her twin short swords a blur of motion. She notes that the sharp edge of her blade aren't as effective as they would be against someone with flesh, but they were still enough to do the job as her foe's bones scatter across the floor. Garn gives a mighty battle cry as he brings his greatsword down upon one foe's head, shattering the skull and spreading bones all over the place.

Begin round 2
OOC:
Everyone notices that, while they seem to be doing some damage, the sharp edges of their weapons aren't doing the normal amount of damage. There's no flesh or muscle for their blades to cut into. /gmhint

The skeleton falls to the ground in a shattered heap as Toshi, Istariel, Garn, and Dahlia all bash into it with their respective weapons/claws. Everyone gains 100 XP. The weapons and armor the skeletons were carrying are broken and busted beyond repair...you MIGHT get one scimitar and one piece of leather armor by scavenging them and taking them to a smithy, but that's pushing it.

Garn throws a mighty swing at the beast, intent on separating its head from its body, when a crossbow bolt slams into his shoulder from behind and catches him completely off guard, throwing off his aim (take 5 from Hegy's botch, Garn). Maia's shot goes wide, and Istariel throws a mighty punch, smacking Dahlia in her head as the beast's thrashing causes him to miss. (Dahlia takes 6 from Istariel). Xulara, seeing a perfect opportunity to strike, leaps into the fray, driving one dagger deep into the beast's side as the other skitters off of its scales.

Roaring in agony, the beast sprays a noxious smelling spittle from its mouth, steam curling up from wherever it lands (I need reflex saves from Garn, Dahlia, and Istariel vs. DC 13...fail and take 6 damage, succeed take 3). Toshi strikes at the other flank, only to have his claws narrowly scratch the scales on that side...and Dahlia, crying out to her god, swings for the neck, her axe biting deep. With a final roar, the beast falls to the ground, dead.

Dahlia, finally catching her breath and realizing that the group just vanquished a dragon, decides to give praise to Sarenrae. She retrieves the religious cup she received in the room before and fills it with the blood of the fallen evil dragon. She will walk over to the side of the beast and kneel next to him.

"Great and mighty Sarenrae, we give thanks to you today for your bountiful blessings. Thank you for allowing us to defeat this servant of evil relatively unscathed."

She dips he finger into the cup full of blood and draws the symbol of Sarenrae upon her forehead.

"We give thanks to you, mighty Sarenrae for protecting our bodies in this well fought battle."

She dips her finger into the cup again and traces the sigil of Sarenrae emblazoned upon her armor.

"We give thanks to the ever vigilant Sarenrae for guiding our blades against the enemies of the light"

She dips her finger in again and traces the sigil of Sarenrae on each side of the head of her ax. She then stands and pours the cup of blood on the dragons hide. She traces the sigil of Sarenrae into the blood.

"Bless our enemy, for though he was an evil being, he is still a creature of the gods"

Feeling pretty good about herself, she looks around the room to see if there is anything of note, or any indication as to which direction might be the better way to go.

"Everyone ready to continue?" Once everyone has had a moment to catch their breaths, I hand a scroll and a potion over to Hegy. "You could use this more than I can. What do you think?" To the others I say, "I've found a bunch of coins here. If it's alright with you all we could split them up later, once we get out of here." If no one objects, I secure everything into one of my empty sacks. I also hold onto the saddle bag where the items were found, just in case we need it later.

Maia runs over toward Dahlia after grabbing Istariel's hand. "I'm so so sorry. He can be a little overzealous at times, so he certainly didn't mean to strike you." She gives a chastising look to the large, glowing figure. "Now you make sure you apologize!"

Toshi is both disappointed and relieved the battle is over so quickly. He pays his wound no mind. He studies the room they're in, looking for exits, nooks and crannies. Curious, he studies the hexagonal floor tiles and picks up and examines the corroded mace in the middle of the room.

The wand has no problem healing the wounds. The mace that Toshi picks up is just a standard, run of the mill mace that looks as though it had been gnawed on by the dragon at some point...pits in the metal and other markings suggest that this mace has seen the business end of the young creature's acid.

If someone is going to attempt to skin the dragon, I will need a Survival check. Also, a Craft (Armor) or Craft (Blacksmith) check will suffice to see if the hide is usable or not.

Toshi, you keep an eye out for anything suspicious as Garn skins the young dragon. Nothing jumps out at you, except for the precision and skill with which the barbarian removes the beast's hide. It is practically flawless, except for the the few spots where you and your compatriots wounded it.
OOC:
Dammit...now I'm gonna have to come up with something cool. Technically, the thing is a "small" creature, so the hide wouldn't be worth much to you guys...but with a Survival roll like that, I'd hate for it to go to waste...
May 20, 2016 4:41 pm
I continue to hold the scroll out to Hegy. "Think you could use this, Hegy? Or I could try my hand at using it. I've had luck understanding the arcane, believe it or not. Seems I have a knack for it."

"Wasn't a wand retrieved earlier? Maybe I can help to identify its purpose as well."
May 23, 2016 4:39 pm
"Wasn't me. Did anyone find or have a wand? What would glitterdust be useful? I hope it's purpose is not decorative..." I put the scroll away in an easy-to-reach pocket.

You all move forward, finding no traps or anything of note. The passage to the next room moves in a bit of an "S" curve before opening into a 45x50 foot room, with a 10x10 column to the east. Someone has scraled "Roge's Dragoons looted this place" on the east wall, and several pieces of rotten bread are scattered throughout the room. The only exit is the way you came in, to the West. Other than that, there is nothing of note in this room.

After a thorough search of the room, including through magical means, everyone determines that this room is empty, and goes back through the exit to the west. Turning south from the room where the Dragon was, you see that the hall to the south (which is the direction that you came from originally) tees off to the East...and you know there were chambers in the room to the south that you haven't explored just yet.

Exploring the southern rooms off of the main entry chamber, you find nothing of interest. As you enter the passageway to go further east, just before the dragon's chamber, you see more of those blue stones in a swirling pattern on the floor.

About halfway down the passage, and just a second too late, Xulara sees a flash of light as a bolt of energy flies out of an alcove ahead and strikes Garn in the chest (3 Damage). It appeared to track the large barbarian wherever he went.

A raspy voice and a beast's cry can be heard in the chamber to the southeast.

Everyone rushes in to the final room, a narrow atrium that is nearly 80 feet long and 25 feet wide. At the end of the hallway, you see two things right off the bat. First is a red kobold, holding some sort of round object in one hand as another extends a wand toward something much larger than he: a Brass Dragon the size of a large horse. The beast is cowering in the corner, and cries out as a white light pours from the wand, and frost forms on the stones around it. Its wings are shackled, its legs hobbled together, and a chain connects its slender neck and tail to the wall behind it. The kobold gives no indication that it has noticed the party come in.

Toshi, still crouched beside the dragon, almost regrets having unlocked it bonds as its sheer power and menacing aspect leave him quite shaken. He steps back, almost dropping his lockpicks as he does so, and gives his name when the dragon demands it.

Garn swallows his fear and introduces himself, furious with himself as he hears his voice shaking.
Jun 14, 2016 1:30 pm
Franae appears quite pleased that everyone present has so politely and respectfully provided their names, and given her the reverence that a mighty dragon deserves. She nods to each party member as they introduce themselves, and actually touches her snout somewhat affectionately to Toshi as he finishes unlocking her bonds.

Thank you, everyone. It is a pleasure to meet you. Turning her attention to Dahlia and the orb, her eyes narrow somewhat, but she still keeps a somewhat cordial tone to her voice. Now then...why do you seek the Orbs of Dragonkind? You do not seem the type who would enslave an entire race to your will, yet here you are trying to take the very thing that would give you that power.
Jun 14, 2016 1:51 pm
"I don't seek this orb Franae. We saw another very similar to it in a church in our town. A kobold army attacked the town, killing the priest who was holding it for someone, the person who found and brought the orb to the priest, and the rest of the town. Only we survived. After some research we found out that the orb may have come from this cave. So we came to see if we could find out what it was and why the kobolds wanted it."
Jun 14, 2016 7:05 pm
The dragon snorts, a puff of smoke coming from her nostrils.

Kobolds. How embarassing that I was captured and imprisoned by a bunch of little lizards with delusions of grandeur. Had they not had the orb with them, I would have taken care of this problem before it started.

A low growl trickling out, she looks at the party as she continues. Know this, warriors. With the Orbs uncovered, many of my kind have started to awaken from long slumbers. The youngest of our kind will rise first, and the eldest among us will not awaken any time soon unless forced to do so. From what I gathered listening to these kobolds during my imprisonment, they seek five of the Orbs in particular, so that their "Great Prophet" can reawaken an ancient Goddess, one that will conquer this world and enslave all upon it.
Jun 14, 2016 7:08 pm
"Who is this Goddess?" Garn asks, drawn into the dragon's story, "And where are the rest of the orbs?"

"Franae, what would you say to an alliance between you and us to defeat these kobolds. We tried on our own and were unable to achieve victory, much like yourself. But together we would be a much greater force to reckon with."
Jun 14, 2016 8:20 pm
The goddess is known as Tiamat, the Dragon Queen, and mother of Evil Dragons.

At Dahlia's suggestion, she turns to the dwarf. Little dwarf, the only reason I didn't obey that kobold's every command is because he was too stupid to realize he had the wrong Orb. If you come across one who has the Bronze orb, then I will have no choice but to devour you on their command.

I will aid you, however, in taking the Orb it had and hiding it away.

"Until one of them shows up with the bronze orb and orders you to take them to it? You may not trust me, but they found you once, with an orb at that. They have powerful magic and they want these. You will not stand a chance on your own. Let us help you. Tell what you know about these orbs and how they work, tell us how to find them so we can keep the lizard bastards from getting them, and let us help you get them somewhere safe, hidden away from those that would use or abuse them."

OOC:
Ouch...
I was caught the first time because I let my pride get in the way. They will not catch me off guard a second time.

I do not know where the other Orbs are, but from the stories I've heard, they grant their wielder's three things: Domination over a particular breed of Dragon, the Strengths and Breath of the dragon within, and the enmity of all Dragonkind. Find the other Orbs before the Kobolds, find a way to destroy them, and prevent the rise of Tiamat.

With that, the great beast reaches a clawed forepaw for the Orb.
OOC:
If anyone wishes to stop her from taking the Orb, now is the chance to roll Reflex.

"So be it then Franae. I hoped we could be friends but you have made your decision. I am however, true to my word. Here is your orb. I hope you fair better than the other we trusted to protect one and escape this ordeal with your life."

Dahlia picks up her bag, opens it, and hands the orb to the dragon.
Jun 15, 2016 12:48 am
Maia stares at the pair, listening intently to the exchange.

When the orb changes hands (claws?), Maia whispers a little too loudly, unaware that she's not thinking to herself.

"No invader from another realm will threaten the children of this one. We won't let it happen."

If no one tries to prevent the dragon from taking the orb, Franae looks at the small package in her claws, and gingerly unwraps it. Growling something low and intelligible to most present, the dragon closes her hand around the Orb and vanishes in a flash of light, leaving behind a pile of weapons and armor. It appears that there is one item intended for each person present: A Dwarven Waraxe, A greatsword, a shortsword, two kamas, a beautiful leather corset trimmed with lace and fastened with bone buttons, an amulet, and a headband.

Everyone gets 2000 XP for completing this dungeon, along with the goodies you've discovered and one Hero Point.

You also just made your first BIG choice in the game, whether you realize it or not, and have been rewarded accordingly. You can continue roleplaying here for now...we will move on to the next chapter here shortly.

Hegy nods to Xulara as she hands her the corset before sitting crosslegged on the floor to inspect it. With Denevér on her shoulder the two silently communicate as they try to determine the source of the obvious witchcraft which permeates from the garment. After a few long minutes Hegy stands, removes her robes, fastens the corset in place, and gets dressed.

"We should rescue dragons every day!"

Maia mutters her impressed thanks, both to Xulara for distributing the items and to Franae for providing them. She dons the small circlet and gently hangs the amulet about Istariel's neck. She nods, contented, but looks a bit conflicted for a moment.

"Lady Franae, what magic allowed you to banish an artifact as powerful as that orb? Is it arcana that could be taught to those of us who wish to see them gone or will we need the claws of dragonkind to rid the world of this plight?"
OOC:
The Dragon and orb both vanished. The items were left in her place...sorry if that was unclear
