Chapter 1: The Beginning

The three of you have become the newest members of The Empire's Special Task force, answering directly to the King or one of his advisers. You are escorted through the Great Hall by 8 Elite Guard. The Great Hell is enormous, probably the size of 3 barracks. There are banners hanging, as well as the heads of many creatures. Pillars line an area leading to the front of the room. The pillars appear to be made out of solid gold.

At the front of the room, you notice 4 people.

King Fainrill is obvious, with his crown and deep crimson plate mail armor. Eliza Warcloak, the King's warpriestess, stands just behind him to the right, wearing black chainmail and a scowl that could freeze a dragon's heart. Next to her is Eris Dragonbain, the King's general, wearing solid gold chainmail and a matching longsword on his back. On the other side of the King is Felspar Highstorm, the King's Wizard, wearing a bright purple robe, leaning on his staff.

You reach about 10' in front of the group and the elite guard leaves you.

What do you do?
Nov 13, 2017 10:04 pm
Edwin stood in the presence of greatness, and he knew it. The glimmer of light across the gilt surfaces in the room immediately struck his eyes. The opulence, it would be so easy to take just a little - No Eddie, no. Those days are behind you. Focus. Rules and etiquette and such. he thought to himself as he dipped from the waist, bowing towards the king in deference, one hand steadying his rapier as he straightened back up.
Nov 14, 2017 2:16 am
May walked sure, confident but alert. She takes a careful look around the room. She finds peace in knowing that she isn't the greenest around but she can't be sure enough. She attempts to take account of the parade of heads before stopping abruptly as the entourage left.

She starts favouring her left leg and takes a wide relaxed stance. She locks eyes with the four before giving a smirk, a click of the tongue, and a shallow bow.

She begins scratching her side as her eyes starts to wander again.
Nov 14, 2017 12:00 pm
Jorrel advanced with a sure and steady gait, chainmail quietly jingling with each step. As he approached the throne he kept his eyes firmly forward, never once wavering to quench his curiosity.

He stopped smartly the required distance from his royal majesty and stood rigidly at attention for three heartbeats before dropping to one knee with his head bowed. His time as a soldier, and his subsequent time as a cripple, had robbed him of any illusions he may have had concerning the moral superiority of the nobility, but he still recognised the king as being the chosen representative of his god on this plane, and he would accept that divine mandate as an absolute.

All we mortals can err, it is only natural, but we must trust that the gods can see into the hearts of men and would not let someone unworthy sit atop the throne.

As the thought of unworthies entered his head, his mind drifted to those beside him in this audience. He hadn't much chance to get the measure of them, but each in their own way seemed to be... flawed. They had recoiled when confronted with his scarred appearance, but then again few didn't. Still, somebody had decided they were worthy of joining this Task Force, and of being in the Royal presence, so Jorrel was willing to give them the benefit if the doubt. For now.
Nov 14, 2017 12:14 pm
The King spoke I’m told you are three of our most promising recruits. We shall see. You have been selected to be a part of an elite group that answers directly to me or one of the other three behind me. Do your missions exactly as instructed and you shall be rewarded generously. Are we understood? Excellent. Your first mission is nothing difficult, merely a retrieval. I have a package waiting for me in Veritas and you need to bring it back. Eris will be accompaning you to see how you do in real life situations. He will not get involved in any combat that may occur unless you are about to die? Do we understand?

The King smiles and his eyes move between each of you. One last thing. Hold out your right arms, palm up. He then claps his hands and this haggard looking elf limps into the room with a glowing red branding iron. You need the mark of the Empire if you’re going to be part of my special group.
Nov 14, 2017 12:22 pm
Jorrel stood and removed his glove without hesitation. He proffered his hand to the elf and, as the hot iron seared his flesh, he closed his eyes and accepted the pain. Pain had been his only companion for years; it was comforting, familiar, even reassuring. And this searing pain coursed through him and seemed to energise him for the mission ahead.

When it was over he was almost sad, though he tried not to show it. He clutched his right wrist gingerly and examined his new scar.

Shame, he thought wryly, that was pretty much the only part of my body which didn't have a scar.
Nov 14, 2017 2:12 pm
Aye sir. Edwin says simply before moving forward, baring his arm as asked. Not the first brand that's been seared into my body. he thought bitterly, thinking of the small symbol on the inside of his left wrist.

When the iron touched his skin, he struggled not to pull it away. Even if it wasn't his first mark, it didn't make the experience enjoyable, by any stretch. Gritting his teeth, he shakes his head when the brand pulls away. Looking down, he inspected the singed flesh, not eager to pull the leather sleeve back down on top of it just yet.
Nov 14, 2017 3:19 pm
May complies. She makes short work of her bracers but as the elf turns towards her, she can't help but feel that something is amiss. She is also weary that she doesn't seem to have seen the brand on others before. Unsure whether that is a bane or a boon, she waits for the pang to hit and yearns that it goes away quick.
Nov 14, 2017 4:07 pm
Excellent! the King exclaims. There is a cart at the gates that you may ride to Veritas. Should be about a three days journey, barring any storms or miscreants. Go there, seek out Kashin Soiltwister in his workshop and retrieve my item, then return. Simple as that. Should be back in a weeks time. Any questions?
Nov 14, 2017 4:13 pm
Edwin flexes his arm, feeling the tight skin pull. Aye, two. You said you've a package there. How are we to know the package or item is yours? I'd hate to go and have this Soiltwister fellow give us the wrong item. he says, launching into his second before taking a breath. Also, is this Soiltwister expecting us?
Nov 14, 2017 4:14 pm
The gnome is expecting you. Show him your mark and he'll know what package to give you. Most things he makes these days is for me, or at the very least the Empire. The King smirks at what he just said.
Nov 14, 2017 4:29 pm
Jorrel nods at the kings answer, although he doesn't really know why. Instead of worrying about it he asks a question of his own,

"Sire, I am forever at your service and I look forward to performing this mission to the best of my ability. The mission itself does not concern me, it seems trivial. But that leads me to wonder why you would send three of us, who you call the most promising recruits, on such an easy mission. Forgive me if I am speaking out of line, sire."
Nov 14, 2017 4:47 pm
That is a valid question. This mission has two reasons to it. Firstly, I want to see how well you can follow simple orders once you are actually in the field. Secondly, this item is of extreme importance and it cannot be trusted in the hands of ordinary soldiers and especially not civilians. The King stares at you with a look that you can't quite read.
Nov 14, 2017 4:47 pm
She keenly waits for that awkward moment of silence before blurting "Off to the cart then." She gives a small curtsy and slowly backs away. "Prostration is weird. Why do people do it anyway? Is it about height? The juicy angle for the neck? Glib groveling?" she think to herself as she tries not to think about the stiffening scar.
Nov 14, 2017 4:59 pm
Edwin follows May as she heads off towards the cart. Once outside, he pulls the leather hood of his cloak up and over his head, eager to keep any weather off.
Nov 14, 2017 5:04 pm
Eris escorts you to the cart. Here, he gets on his own steed, a black warhorse. You three in the back of the cart, the horses know the way.
Nov 14, 2017 5:25 pm
Jorrel clambers into the cart and plumps himself down at the front-left corner. He extends his right leg out in front of him and massages the aches in his calf, pointedly ignoring the looks of these youngsters.
Nov 14, 2017 5:32 pm
Edwin climbs up into the cart adroitly, taking a space near the back. Once they are all assembled, he tugs the hood back a bit, revealing his face.

So, we've not been properly introduced yet. M'name's Edwin. You can call me Eddie, if you'd prefer.
Nov 14, 2017 6:08 pm
Jorrel nods a greeting at Eddie and another at May,

"Ya both took the branding well. Wouldn't a' thought it to look at yas, but there ya go. The name's Jorrel, and ah'm at yer service. Looks like it'll be quite a few days in the back a' this cart, so there's three things about me ya need ta know; one, the scars don't hurt anymore. The bones do, but that's a different story. Two; I won't be tellin' ya the story of how ah got 'em just yet. And three; ah snore like a banshee, ya might wanna wear somethin' in yer ears if ya wanna get any sleep.

May slinks into the cart and prowls for a dry, flat spot. She lays on her side, a hand on her cheek. She twists her hips and her lower back gives a light *brrrt* "Ah! I sure do hope the ride isn't bumpy. Hi Eddie and Jorrel. The name is May. Do you think our 'appointee' is going to indulge us with a look beneath that golden cage?"

She gives a sigh and falls on her back. Staring up "So, uh, how did you get in?"
Nov 14, 2017 7:19 pm
"In? I rejoined. The army I mean, I wasn’t on a, uh, "Special Task Force" the first time, just a grunt. I was lookin’ forward to cuttin’ up some dwarfs, but guess I’ll hafta wait a while for that."
Nov 14, 2017 7:20 pm
Edwin grimaces. Always with this question. Always with the same looks afterwards. Well, better they know now and not later. THAT didn't work well last time. he thinks to himself. He tugs the glove off his left hand and pushes the sleeve back, showing the inch wide brand on the inside of his left wrist, marking him as part of a group of erstwhile youths.

Gave me my choice when I got caught. Serve time in uniform or in bars. Uniform seemed a better chance to make a heap o' coin.
Nov 14, 2017 7:23 pm
Jorrel just nods at Edwin, totally nonplussed,

"Half my old unit got the same choice. I’d rather serve with someone goin’ ta war with their eyes open, than some noble-born, wet-behind-the-ears posh boy with dreams of glory."
Nov 15, 2017 3:36 am
You continue on like this for several hours. The sun begins to lower in the sky. The horses stop and Eris appears. It’s getting late, time to make camp, he grunts at you and walks away.
Nov 15, 2017 6:46 am
She props up on her hip and elbow and waves her finger come-hither. "We're lucky the big guy didn't seem to have heard 'that' comment." she reprimands in a hushed tone. "Now, keep a wide headroom from me or I couldn't guarantee you staying whole. You go batten down the hatches and I'll take first watch."

She looks for a good perch and then dumps her pack. She fluffs it up soon after to support her lower back as she reclines. She barks "Go sleep." as soon as she feels the conversation has ended.
Nov 15, 2017 2:23 pm
Edwin smiles to himself as May's feisty retort carries just far enough on the evening winds. He hops down out of the cart and stretches before setting to the task at hand.

When you're ready to switch off the watch, wake me May. he says, laying his head down with his hood pulled over his face.
Nov 15, 2017 4:35 pm
Jorrel nods to the others as he spreads his bedroll in a flat spot as far from Edwin as possible (to spare him the noise of the snoring),

"Suits me, I always wake up early anyway. Gotta pee."

When it look slike Edwin has drifted off he props himself up on his arms and whispers over to May,

"Sorry miss, didn't mean to offend. Sometimes... sometimes my mouth just works by itself."
Nov 15, 2017 5:26 pm
Oi! You need to keep quiet and get some rest. There are barbarians and bandits roaming these parts. They don't take kindly to imperials in what they claim is their territory. Not to mention the wildlife, Eris grunts at you.
Nov 15, 2017 6:20 pm
Jorrel simply grunts and lies back down, not bothering to mention that the General had been making significantly more noise than he had. He just closes his eyes and lets sleep come.
Nov 15, 2017 7:44 pm
The night goes on without incident. Eris takes the last watch. As the sun is just peaking over the horizon, you're all awoken with Eris talking. Get up, the lot of you. We have potential trouble just o'er the hill. There was a commotion not too long ago, now there is smoke. Normally I wouldn't bother, but it's right on the road we're takin'.
Nov 15, 2017 7:55 pm
Edwin rubs the last bit of sleep from his eyes and quickly makes his morning ablutions. His cloak and weaponry restored to their normal locations and his eyes clear, he looks to the others.

Better to approach and investigate on foot I would think. I'm typically lightfooted enough that I would volunteer to check and report. No sense running a cart headlong into an ambush. he says softly.
Nov 15, 2017 8:03 pm
Aye. Eris nods.

Quickly and quietly you make it to the crest of the hill. The first thing you notice in the low light is the soft glow of a fire. Beyond that you see a cart overturned and three people tied up. Around the fire you see three men counting some gold and trinkets.
Nov 15, 2017 8:18 pm
Edwin slips back down the hill just enough that he can right himself to sprint back to the group. He skids to a halt as he gets near enough to speak without shouting.

Three bandits, with three hostages. The cart is rolled and they are counting out gold. If we are to try saving these folks, we would need to either make our approach seem innocent, which, with you here sir that's not likely to succeed. The other option is to hit them hard and fast, not giving them a chance to harm the folk tied up on the ground.
Nov 15, 2017 8:32 pm
I am not here to fight. Merely evaluate how you fight and save you if necessary. Eris stares at the three of you. Kill them. All crime within the Empire must be met with judicious force. Release the prisoners.
Nov 15, 2017 8:59 pm
May gives her nose a few smacks and bows her nose left and right violently. Still not making the grade, she tries to pop her elbow and neck joints. "OK. So we have an obstruction on the road that we can't avoid, a number of hostiles rivaling our own, and fire. I would throw my lot with the latter. Use the fire and smoke to cover our entry and go on a quick romp at their necks." she says in a blunt and crusty growl. The urgency and consciousness present without the screen.

She rubs her eyes to goad them to adjust and she scans the camp. "A concentrated force would be our best bet. Let's just hope the steeds keep calm."

Jorrel finishes packing his things into his bag, then slings it into the back of the wagon,

"Look, if I go sneaking up there with you two, I'm probably just goin' ta get ya killed. Crawlin' around in the bushes just i'nt my thing. You go on ahead, take up a position as close as you can get. I'll give you ten hundred-counts then I'll drive this wagon right up to them, all innocent-like. You'll know when to spring the trap."

As he talks he climbs into the drivers' seat and stashes his unsheathed sword just behind the seat, out of sight. With his cloak wrapped tight around him nobody would be able to spot his armour unless they were right on top of him, and by then it would be too late.

You raise a valid point. We need to move quickly. Eddie says, moving back up the hill to his previous vantage point quietly, trying to maneuver into a place somewhat closer but still hidden from view.

Trying to get as close to the bandits as possible without alerting them.

May follows Eddie towards the enemy encampment, retaining some distance but keeping sight with him. She creeps through the hillside finding the smoke she seeks. She adheres to the man's pace as they advance through the night.
Nov 16, 2017 3:20 pm
As you make your way up the hill and make it to the top. Edwin missteps at the top of the hill part of the road gives way, causing dirt and rock to fall down the hill. You notice the bandits look up in your direction and stand up. They begin walking towards you. They are 100' away.
Nov 16, 2017 3:21 pm
Jorrel settles himself as comfortably as possible on the wooden seat of the cart and counts under his breath, and each time he reaches one hundred he raises another finger. Boredom doesn't touch him, as he is totally absorbed in the task. When he has completed the count he gees the horses forward into a trot and adopts a bored pose.
Nov 16, 2017 9:11 pm
Damn! Eddie said silently to himself as he crept backwards and off to one side. His hand squeezed the worn grip of his rapier nervously, sure that he'd be set upon momentarily. Come on Jorrel. Make quick work of that counting old timer!
Nov 17, 2017 7:27 am
As she sees the approach, she gives Eddie a cursory glance as to gauge his intentions. "Well, we're pulling them from the hearties so I guess the works" she thinks to herself. She plants herself firmly and starts minding her breath. "Maybe a little bit closer. Just a few more paces chums." She pulls out a dagger and gingerly runs it through the seams and studs of her bracers. She makes a measured rhythmic clicking noise that she believes to be vaguely discernable from their distance with the troop.
Nov 17, 2017 5:04 pm
The brigands continue to move forward, weapons drawn. The one in the front yells Oi! What ye be doing out 'ere? This be our territory! Now you owe us a fee!
Nov 17, 2017 5:53 pm
May locks eyes with him and flicks a coin to about 30 feet in front of her. She keeps the noise on bordering to audible levels as she stares at the people below.
Nov 17, 2017 6:28 pm
Jorrel stops the cart about twenty feet from the brigands and drops the reins. He stares intently at each of them in turn, allowing them to take in the extensive scarring on his face. He then spits on the ground in front of them before speaking,

"Now you boys should pro’ly turn around and head the other way," he says in a slow, deep drawl, "or yer likely ta get hurt."

Edwin hears the bandits start moving slowly away and quietly lets his breath out, waiting a five count before he starts back up the hill.
Nov 17, 2017 7:10 pm
He stands up on the footrest of the cart and ever so slowly reaches back, then lifts his greatsword high, moving very slowly so they can get the best possible view of every one of its sixty-four inches. He then flourishes it as he jumps down to the left of the cart.

"Not a good day to be a bandit," he says as he saunters towards them.

Edwin moves quickly, trying to get as close as possible to the bandits, trapping them between himself and Jorrel.

Moving and taking the Dash action to stop five feet from the bandits. Close enough that they would have to move out of Jorrel's reach to attack me.

Seeing that the pressure is off, May closes the distance, and holds down a bandit (1) between her and Jorrel. She makes a minute slash to his tricep and sinks a dagger in his side. She pulls back, satisfied, and readies herself for harrowing them another time.

A part of Jorrel, a very deep part, felt sympathy for these bandits; they were barely more than kids, desperate pathetic kids. But the rest of him was out for justice, and the hearrtache that these unfortunates had wrought more than justified their fate. He felt the familiar anger boiling up, infusing his muscles with a frantic energy. He could see his allies boxing them in and he knew the fight was over, they just didn’t know it yet.

Time for them to find out, he thought, swinging his sword round in a long wide strike from behind himself, aiming up under the arm of the one who hadn’t yet been injured...

Just for reference: Jorrel is in the middle, to his right is a dead bandit. In front of him is a dead bandit. Behind that bandit is May. To Jorrel’s left is the last bandit. Behind him, but out of range is Edwin. Eris is at the top of the hill.
The third bandit, realizing he’s surrounded swings wildly at Jorrel.

The decapitated head of a bandit thuds into Jorrel’s chest, causing him to take a step back in surprise. It’s just the opening the final bandit needs, and he thrusts his sword deep into Jorrel’s midrif. The pain explodes through him and, just for a moment, he is back in the hospice, his old wounds healing, and the power of a god is just beyond reach.

Stepping up to the living bandit and striking out, intending to incapacitate rather than kill.

Orders may be orders, but now we've lost the chance to determine if there are others waiting for these to return, or where the goods have gone so the King's men can recover them and enrich his coffers. He was going to die, but at least he could have served some useful purpose for ten bleedin' minutes before you did him in. Edwin says levelly.

I swear, the tactical foresight the gods gave a stump in the mud. How this one ever rose to this military position without a working appreciation for information flow will forever be beyond me. he thinks to himself as he stows the rapier and draws a dagger, slicing through the prisoners' bonds.

The three people appear to be a married couple and their child. After you cut them loose, the man approaches you and reaches out to shake your hand. Thank you. I was afraid of what they might do to us. Unfortunately, everything we owned was in this cart.
Nov 22, 2017 9:11 am
Jorrel leans back against the cart. Now that the Adrenalin has worn off the pain of his wound is really taking over. But now isn’t the time to enjoy it, he can see his life blood leaking away. He props his sword against the wheel then removes his chain and vest. The wound is deep, and the scar will eventually be at home among its brothers. He sees the family staring at his grotesque body, trying to shield the boy from the sight although he is peeking. Jorrel resists the temptation to roar, to scare them, so instead he just gets on with tending the wound. He covers the cut with both hands and closes his eyes, reaching deep into the pain, deep down to where he can feel his god...

When he takes his hand away the wound is significantly reduced, with just a little bit of blood weeping from the corner.

Hmm, yes, well, I guess we better be on our way. Hopefully the capital will have a new job opportunity for a man that owns nothing, the man motions to his family and they begin to walk. Eris approaches the man and whispers to him, handing him something. The man nods and they begin walking away. Let's go. We still have a ways to travel, Eris grunts.
Nov 27, 2017 5:42 pm
May puts her hands to her hips and growls"For better or worse, we should clean this scene. This could be routine banditry or maybe this was a set-up.". She chucks her pack to the group's wagon and starts clearing the road. Putting out fires and dragging debris out of the road. She keeps an eye of for anything inconspicuous about the tipped over cart and the bandits. She would also slit the wrist of the bodies that she can get her hand on as she lays them behind some foliage.
Nov 28, 2017 2:29 am
Do what you want, but I’m leaving, Eris grunts and retrieves his horse. It’s still a few days more and we’re on a tight schedule.
Nov 28, 2017 3:17 am
I agree with May. We can take the five minutes to clean up here a bit. We'll ride just slightly longer into the night, push the horses slightly harder. Over a few days, we'll easily make the time up. Edwin says, feeling a twinge of spite in his heart as he bends down to help May get things straightened up.
Nov 28, 2017 3:25 am
Eris shrugs and keeps riding.
Nov 28, 2017 9:41 am
Jorrel watches the General ride off as the others start clearing the scene. He can't shake the feeling that something here is just wrong. First of all the whispering and passing of... something. Of course that was probably totally innocent, most likely words of condolence and a gift to help them get started up in a new life. But. But it just seemed odd. And now the General telling them to "do what you want". A phrase that Jorrel had never in all his years in the army heard any senior officer say to one of their juniors.

He snaps out of his reverie and sets to work helping the others, trying not to make it obvious that he is deliberately bending at his wound to cause the maximum amount of pain. As he works he watches his new companions, wondering if they too are wondering about the General.

Probably not, he supposes, not really military types.

"Odd one that, he says, gesturing after the retreating horse, "I've never met a General so... unconcerned with his subordinates. I suppose being in a special task force has it's benefits.
Nov 28, 2017 11:12 pm
The girl makes good use of her hindquarters as she drags all these weight around. She lets out an audible sigh "Freedom is both a bane and a boon. I suggest we make the most of it and just do a good job, whatever the job is." She keeps an eye out for the gold plated cavalier, urges the band to go faster, and whispers "We better catch up with our nurse maid lest we see the horseman part with his horse."
Nov 29, 2017 3:33 pm
You put out the fire and get things straightened up and then you continue on. You don't manage to catch up to Eris until the sun is low in the sky and he has set up camp for the evening. Eris is sitting next to the fire and barely glances up at you as the cart arrives. It's about time you lot show up. Feel better, now that you wasted time cleaning up?
Nov 29, 2017 4:06 pm
Edwin bites his tongue, struggling to keep his words in check.

Who did he sleep with to rise to this position? He's a moron at best, actively working against the good interest of the land at worst. I swear, he'll be the death of me. he thinks to himself as he helps make up their part of the camp.
Nov 30, 2017 6:48 am
May crashes to the dust and rolls around, stretching. She lets out loud grunts as a few joints make way before her eyes lock on gold "I'm feelin' fine, just a bit peckish. What's on my mind though is how amazing roads are! You see, they make travel expedient, expeditious, easy -er -ish. Folly though is it's predictability. It makes travel foreseeable and sure."

"Weird. Pray tell, whose time has been wasted and much did we waste? Wait, I guess the better question is, how did you manage to lose your charges and yet feel complete aplomb in this rendezvous?"
OOC:
I'd like to clarify something. Besides the combat bit, the horses always had the final say where the wagons goes, right?

Jorrel just grunts in response to Eris as he gets his bedroll ready and then sits with his rations. The stars are bright, so it will be a cold night, but these are the kinds of nights that Jorrel had always loved best. He could stare at the heavens for hours, lost in their depths. He wondered if the gods similarly stared back down in wonder, or if this world was little more than an anthill to them. Lost in his thoughts he doesn't immediately realise that he starts telling the group a story,

"I 'member back in the early days of the Killmane Conquests. The stinkin' dwarfs were still an organised force back then, and they used to make sport of smashin' our patrols in the mountains. The patrol would make camp for the night, in a nice sheltered spot like this'n, and in the mornin' all that'd be left is ashes from their fire. Well ol' Cap'n Hornfast, he got tired of bein' scared of those short-ass basts, an' he decided to do somethin' about it. He sent a patrol out, as usual. Then as night fell, the whole rest o' the detachment, we crept out o' our own camp and surrounded that hollow. We caught the little blighters comin' up from some hidden burrow, lookin' ta sneak in ta camp and slaughter our men. It wasn't humans who were slaughtered that night, ah can tell ya'. We took our torches and cleared out that whole tunnel, we foun' whole families of that filth cowerin' under there and we showed no more mercy than they would us.

"The long an' short o' it is; we saved human lives. Those basts woulda saw every one o' our kind cloven in two, but we got to 'em first. An' I'd gladly go back an' do it all again. But ah take no pleasure in killin' those of me own race, even bandits like those back on the road. An' ah think that any time we can take ta help humans down on their luck, well that's the opposite o' wastin' time."

This entire time he had been staring at the fire, but now he looks the General dead in the eye,

"With respect, sir."

Eris looks at May. My only responsibilities are retrieving the package and evaluating you lot. Anything other than that is not my concern. I evaluated you and now I’m on my way to the package. If you think for one second that I give a damn about you, then you need to think again. The King may have you as part of this special little task force, but from what I can tell, you’re easily replaceable. Without taking a breath, he whips his head around to Jorrel. The humans were saved. Their items weren’t salvageable so we wasted time cleaning up. You wanted to help them? Do what I did and give them enough gold to start over in the capital. I gave them 5000 gold, what did you give them. Soldier. Eris really emphasizes the last word.

Jorrel remains silent as the General retires. He is experienced enough to know when is a good time to shut up, and he didn’t want to come up on charges of insubordination. After the General is out of earshot he says to the others,

"Get some rest. At my age I don’t need much sleep, so I’ll take first watch. I like the quiet at this time anyway."

Jorrel's blade misses the Kobold, crashing to the ground.
Edwin's blade pierces through the back of the Kobold as blood splatters across May. The Kobold falls limp to the ground.
Kobold 2 laughs and lunges at Jorrel again.
Kobold 1 strikes at Jorrel's chest.
About this time, Eris awakes and darts toward the kobolds attacking Jorrel and strikes at Kobold 1, his longsword decapitating the kobold in one fell swoop.

In Jorrel's anger at Eris, he swings and misses the Kobold. Edwin swiftly moves behind the kobold, stabbing his rapier through his heart. The kobold makes a high pitched, guttural scream and it falls dead.

Edwin spits on the corpse of the little bugger.

Sorry for tripping up there you lot. I'm usually not that bad on my feet, not sure what came over me. I wonder what drove these bastards to seek out our camp to begin with? he says as he bends down to see if the bleeding corpses have anything of value on them.

The only possessions these creatures seem to have is a crude looking dagger apiece.
Feb 1, 2018 4:24 pm
Edwin takes a pair of the daggers and slips them into his waistband. Always good to have a weapon that people don't immediately associate with you. he says simply.
Feb 1, 2018 8:48 pm
Jorrel still stands there, breath coming in huge gulps, while he lets the pain of his wounds engulf him. After some time he stretches his back and cracks his shoulders, before wiping the gore from his sword with one of the kobold’s cloaks. He finds a rock to sit on and peels off his armor, examining the wound underneath for a time before calling on the power of his god to knit close the wound.

He looks up as Edwin takes the daggers and grins,

"I prefer they know it was me who killed ‘em, whoever they are."

He glances at the still-catatonic May and quickly looks away, then whispers to Edwin,

"I’ve seen this before. She won’t be much more help on this mission. We should drop her at the next inn."
Feb 2, 2018 3:30 pm
Hmph. Stupid lizards waking me out of my sleep. Eris mutters to himself. Edwin, good efficiency. Jorrel, less power more accuracy. And YOU, Eris turns to May You're about as useful as troll shit to a dragon! Consider your term of service ended. Everybody else, load up. Eris returns to his bedroll and begins packing.
Feb 2, 2018 8:51 pm
Edwin shakes his head at May's dressing down. How she got into the group to begin with is beyond me. Seizing up like that in the face of the enemy. Gods above only know what would have happened had it been something more dangerous than these little scalies. he thinks quietly as he starts packing his own gear up, getting ready to move out.

You certainly seem able to take a beating Jorrel. We could likely use that advantageously in the future. If you can draw their eye, I can pincushion them pretty neatly.
Feb 3, 2018 10:19 am
Jorrel grins at Edwin,

It'd be my distinct pleasure, he says, a note of grim humor in his voice, "wouldn't want yer pretty clothes gettin' torn by some nasty sword, would we."

Jorrel then squeezes Edwin's shoulder in a sign of camaraderie, the closest he will come to giving any kind of compliment.

"Not long until it's light. Ya'd better get some rest while ya still can."

You push through the day. The skies are clear and the temperature is good. Your travel makes good time. The sun is where it would be in late afternoon when the mountain peaks over the plains. As you approach the mountain, you see a city built into it. You see different layers going up the mountain and presumably within. At the front of the city is a large wall and sturdy gate. As you approach, the human guards look down, see Eris, and immediately open the gates.

You enter the city. For those that have never been, it's a wonder. Rock homes and shops are everywhere. Steel, rock, and iron dominate the scenery. You see dwarves running to and fro, all of them seem to be unarmed with the exception of a few with picks and shovels. Everything seems to be mechanical, which is highly uncommon everywhere except here. You leave your cart at the stables and Eris tells you to follow him.

Eris leads you to a shop, not too far into the city. A sign on the outside reads Kashin's Inventions. Inside is like nothing you have ever seen: vials of various sizes and shapes and colors are everywhere, sometimes dripping into each other, weapons and items of all shapes and sizes hang on walls and lie in cases. There are only two people in the store, a gnome who seems to be moving from vial to vial talking to himself, and a female human behind a counter.
Feb 13, 2018 5:24 pm
How do you react to all of this?
Feb 13, 2018 10:01 pm
As they head through the city, Edwin is amazed at the sheer size of most of the things. The only real time the wonder leaves his eyes is when a sneer of disdain fills them at the sight of the dwarves.

Edwin looks at Jorrel before turning back to the two folks in the shop.

Kashin Soiltwister? he says simply, addressing the gnome.
Feb 15, 2018 3:12 pm
As you turn to look at Jorrel, it seems he has disappeared. In fact Eris led you into the shop, but now seems to be nowhere around either.

The gnome is moving about the shop quickly. Yes, yes. Kashin I am. Any orders can be placed with Heliana.
Feb 15, 2018 3:25 pm
No need for an order, I'm here to pick up. Edwin says, rolling up his sleeve to show the angry red brand on his arm.
Feb 15, 2018 3:34 pm
Pickup, order, order, pickup. Same words different meaning. the gnome says quickly, never glancing at you. Where did I place that ore... The gnome wonders off into a back room.
Feb 16, 2018 7:37 pm
The small human woman approaches you. Perhaps I can be of assistance. She says, her voice soft and high.
Feb 16, 2018 8:37 pm
Edwin sighs and faces the woman. I was ordered explicitly to talk with Kashin. The king instructed me to show him my brand and he would give me the package due for the king. There was no mention of intermediaries of any kind. Though if you can help, so be it. Edwin says, keeping his voice steady. Is the package for the king ready?
Feb 16, 2018 9:48 pm
The woman sighs. Unfortunately for the last few weeks, Kashin has been declining mentally. He's rather old, even for gnomes. He mostly gets his jobs done on time, but this one he could not. You know the ore he was babbling about? He doesn't have any, hasn't for some time. About three weeks ago or supplier stopped delivering for no reason. The only way the package is getting made, is for someone to retrieve the ore.
Feb 16, 2018 9:56 pm
Edwin looks at the woman with a momentary blank stare. Well, my compatriots seem to have abandoned me along the way. If the only way this package is getting made is with this ore, it would seem that I would be well-served to recover the ore, now wouldn't it? Provided I can do that, what kind of time delay is there in producing the king's package? Additionally, has anyone sent word back to the king that his package was to be delayed because of this supply issue? he says, mind already running down the list of things that need to be done in short order.

Also, I hate to be a burden, but I'm new to town and my escort is no longer here. Where would you recommend as a place to bunk down for the night? Preferably someplace I may be able to find a few willing souls to help me in recovering the ore?
Feb 16, 2018 10:26 pm
As far as a letter to the King, I am unsure as to whether or not a letter was sent. And as for where you can sleep, I would recommend the barracks. With you mark, you can get your own room.
Feb 20, 2018 2:13 pm
Fair enough. I'll send a rider back to the king. Where is this ore supposed to come from and how long will it be before Kashin can produce the king's order?
Feb 20, 2018 3:46 pm
Well, the ore is in the mine, at the bottom of the city. Once the ore is recovered, it should only be about 4 hours until he can complete the order.
Feb 20, 2018 3:57 pm
Is there a danger to going to get it or could a single person reasonably recover it?
OOC:
What time is it roughly?
Feb 20, 2018 4:03 pm
OOC:
Late afternoon.
Honestly, I don't know. There have been an increased number of accidents lately, but everyone claims it is merely typical mine accidents. I don't buy it though. Others claim a curse is to blame, although if you ask about that, no one will talk since you're a human.
Feb 20, 2018 4:09 pm
I'll check in at the barracks then, see if there are any other soldiers that would agree to travel down there then. What direction is the barracks from here, if you please? he says simply. Provided that she can give him the info, he'll thank her and head that direction.
Feb 20, 2018 4:46 pm
You make your way to the barracks, down the spiral mountain. All around you are humans and dwarves peddling wares and looking at you suspiciously. The barracks are built directly into the mountain. You enter and immediately see Eran with two unfamiliar looking men.
OOC:
Lux and Guille, go ahead and enter. You've just been recruited by Eran to join the party. You're already members of the Imperial Army/
Feb 20, 2018 4:54 pm
Well met Eran. There's a minor snag that needs to be addressed before we can finish our task here. Edwin says as he walks up to Eran with the two soldiers.
Feb 20, 2018 5:07 pm
Something you can handle, I am sure? Eran asks.
Feb 20, 2018 5:52 pm
Most definitely. It would be good to have some extra hands if at all possible. Just from a size of the recovery that needs to be done. Edwin says, looking at the other two, unsure if they are to be part of his retinue at this stage or not.

Guille is a dark-skinned, spanish-influenced man. He speaks in a typical Castillan spanish accent. He is about 5'9", 175 lbs.

Bueno! How nice to meet you. I am Guillermo Huelguista, but you can call me GEE-Yeh or GEEL. Eran has sent me to assist you along on your travels for our monarch.
Feb 20, 2018 8:37 pm
Well met Geeyeh! The assistance is much appreciated. Later we should discuss some about our relative skill sets so we can approach things intelligently. For the time, however, we need to make our way to the mines near the south of the city. I can fill you in on the way. The name's Edwin Straekman, though you can call me Edwin or Eddie as you'd like. Edwin says, extending his hand.

Eran looks at the three of you. You three take care of that, I have other business to attend to. He then leaves.
Feb 28, 2018 3:25 am
Edwin watches a bit aloofly as Eran leaves before turning back to the other two.

Well, I guess here's the details. I was sent down here with a handful of other soldiers to pick up a package for the King from Kashin's shop. It would appear that the doddering old fool hasn't realized he wasn't even given the materials to produce the King's package. Per his assistant, it should only be a few hours of work once he gets the ore. Apparently, we should be able to get the ore for Kashin from the mines to the south side of the city. If we move quickly, we should be able to make it back before shops all close. Edwin says, simply and straightforward.

You two good to go?
Feb 28, 2018 3:30 am
Yes sir. I say solemnly.
OOC:
Are there ranks that we should Be acknowledging?
Feb 28, 2018 7:13 pm
OOC:
There are no ranks amongst you three.
You make your way through the city to the mines. There are four entrances into the mines and they all currently have the doors closed with a guard standing in front of each. Leading into the mines are rails with a cart sitting on them.
Feb 28, 2018 7:31 pm
Good day lads. We're here on urgent business from the capital. Seems old man Kashin was due a pile of ore for an order for the king and has yet to receive it. We're here to pick it up. Edwin says, seeing no real reason to obfuscate their purpose.
Feb 28, 2018 8:19 pm
Well, we haven't had any deliveries for awhile. Had a few cave-ins in some tunnels. Have some men trapped too. Expect they'll be dug out in a few days. Right now we could let you through, maybe you could help.
Feb 28, 2018 8:23 pm
Do you have a map for the tunnel routes? Something that could guide us to these men? We would also need to retrieve the ore once the men are safe. Turning to his partners.

I would assume the King would be willing to wait a bit longer for his item in exchange for the safety of his people.
Feb 28, 2018 8:57 pm
I don't have a map, I'm just a guard. There are other, non-trapped people inside, they might have a map. Doubt it though, the dwarves know these tunnels pretty well.
Feb 28, 2018 8:58 pm
Whats the light situation down there? Do we need torches?
Feb 28, 2018 9:19 pm
Thank you, sir! Turning to Orrin: Don't worry; I have the lights covered. Guille casts Dancing Lights, casting the orbs of light 20 feet apart from each other in a straight line from his position, the closest one 60 feet from him, the farthest 120 feet.
Feb 28, 2018 9:34 pm
I was about to say that it's lit fairly well now since we have more humans down their. The dwarves don't need much light though. If you're scared of spiders, i wouldn't go down. Sometimes they set up down there.
Feb 28, 2018 9:51 pm
I wouldn't want to impose on the King's good will. There are three of us, however, we will help on our way to our quarry. Once there, we can determine how best to get the ore to Kashin and also help the miners. Edwin says after a moment of thought. At the mention of spiders, he smiles a bit. Cooked up in the right oil, they can be a very worthwhile snack. A bit crunchy.
Feb 28, 2018 10:23 pm
Regardless let us proceed. I hide the fact that I’m somewhat annoyed that Edwin considers the Kings ore more important than the lives of the common folk.
Feb 28, 2018 10:30 pm
Sounds grand! Guille follows behind the rogue and the monk, using bonus actions to move the light ahead of them along the journey.
Mar 1, 2018 4:02 pm
You travel into the tunnel for a little while. You pass piles of rocks, mine carts, and pickaxes. Eventually, you come to a three way split in the tunnel. In front of you, you hear the sounds of pickaxes clanging against rock. To the right all you can hear is a slight wind. and to the left, it's deathly silent.
Mar 1, 2018 4:25 pm
Let's go forward and talk with one of the miners. Guille begins walking forward.

Kashin's assistant didn't mention, neither did the king. I was told to pick up a package for the king at Kashin's. Got there, was told he never received the ore he required for it. I would assume that the mines would have a list of standing orders for master Kashin, would they not? Edwin says flatly.

The human shrugs his shoulders. Kashin has his own people that purchase ore from miners, not necessarily a standing order. That being said, if it is for Kashin, its 100% Bauxiliam Ore. This mountain is the only provider of the ore on the continent and it's full of magical properties. If you go back towards the way you came in and instead of going straight to us, you would go to your left. Travel down that tunnel for a bit then take a right. There should be some more miners that can direct you from there.
Mar 7, 2018 3:43 pm

Aye, bauxilium ore. Tunnel closed or not, the king is depending on the item from Kashin, and that can't be done until we recover the ore the gentleman was supposed to receive. You make your way deeper into the cave. The torches and lanterns become fewer and farther apart. The tunnels get narrow and shorter, until you can barely move through them without crouching. A bright light suddenly shines about 100' feet in front of you and you look up to see a wooden door with a small dwarf standing in front of it.

Whay about a different contest? He pulls out his drum and slings it across his shoulder. He then hits it, letting out a trill.

Again, not a contest. Straight through the door will be a large room with the Protector in it, but you can’t defear it without my help. But if you turn left or right, you’ll circle around to three separate rooms with items that will only work against the Protector.

There is a chamber in the middle, about 400 square feet. Outside of it are halls that lead around the chamber. Off of those halls, there are three rooms with items. It is slightly confusing. You see, he and I are connected but his defeat does not mean the end of either of us. We just go into a slumber. I want him to be defeated, because only the true heroes of this land can defeat him. As Spirit of the Mountain, I want what is best for this land.

Everything he seems to be telling you seems to be true.
Mar 13, 2018 6:26 pm
Kozma looks to Orrin, Meh!? I'm game There must be something going on to be sturring up the spirit of the moutain, I have only begun recently hearing about the rumors again. Kozma starts to head towards the tunnel on the left.

@Orrin What you know is less historical and more fable. You know that about 2000 or so years ago, when the mine was all dwarves, there were suddenly an unprecedented amount of earthquakes, cave-ins, and missing miners. This went on for some time until a group of warriors headed deep into the heart of the mountain. Everyone assumes they defeated the spirit because the accidents and earthquakes stopped.

Orrin rises to his feet

Many thanks for the gloves. Do we have any idea what they do? he says, taking the gloves. We should try being more cautious as we move through the rest of this area. I don't know that we can count on magically intervening dwarves at every turn. he says, slipping his bow back onto his back as he tries the gloves on.
Apr 21, 2018 2:44 pm
Guille wonders if the spirit can tell them more about these new gloves. Eh, misterr spirit, can ju help us underrstand more about theese glubs?

@Guille The water source seems magical, though you don't know anything about it. You haven't heard about anything like this. You see the pond, waterfall and the cave walls and floor, pretty much only the obvious. Everything seems natural in appearance except for what was previously mentioned. The water seems safe enough.

Orrin Garcia rates towards the final chest to open it.

As you each open a chest, you all find the same things, a simple amulet.
May 30, 2018 9:10 pm
Guille looks over the amulet, trying to find out anything he can about it.

does it look cool??

@Guille other than the bluish tinge to the amulet, you don't see or know anything about this blade.

@Orrin while examining it closely, you see a faded script on the back that you do not recognize. You can't recall any information about an amulet like this.

The amulets are hemp rope attached to a wooden circle. It has a bluish tint to it, that seems unnatural.

Guille shrugs, then puts the amulet on around his neck.

Kozma would fasten this locket around his off hand wrist. So some magical wooden circle thing is gonna help us?
Jun 8, 2018 2:41 pm
This ghost of the mountain or whatever seems to think it will. At best, it helps and we come out stronger. At worst, we die and none of this matters anymore. Edwin says, with a smile. So no harm in trying it.

Is there anything to the legend that i've been told about that utilizes rings and amulets? [history/int check]

Orrin places the amulet around his neck.

"So what now?"
Jun 11, 2018 1:41 pm
Well either the ghost will bring us to what we need to lay to rest or these "magic" items will kills us. Either way I haven't made enough renown to die like this yet. Kozma scratches at the amulet on his arm. Either way, what ever we do we should do it quickly!
Jun 11, 2018 7:44 pm
@Kozma You don't recall any legends dealing with wooden amulets.
