The road has been long to get here to the mountain kingdom of Rosham. It has been four weeks since you left Agartha. Four weeks since Desiree, leader of the Ouroboros Guild, brought the five of you together, each representing the special interests of the Agarthan merchants or their own machinations. Four long, drudging weeks have passed defending yourselves from pathetic bandits or wandering monsters that did not realize the calibur of adventurers your unseeming lot represented.

The road you have been traveling on has drawn nearer the mountain home of Shimazu, a warlord of old whose family has controlled the eastern range for generations. Stories and rumors have told of their stranglehold being the result of an ancient samurai guardian spirit or even in some cases an ancient Oni that watches over the clan and guides them through the ages but such stories come from the mouths of peasants and always differ from town to town. What hasn't changed however are the stories of Shimazu's cruelty. As you have gotten closer and closer to his home, the roadside villages have been more and more abandoned. Full fields of rice lay rotting in the paddies, and it is only just autumn. Here and there, some villagers have stayed and have warned you against the road ahead but even their scars and broken homes are not enough to turn you from your mission, to retrieve the Amulet of the Dragonstones. You signed a contract and for those of you who that means anything to, completion is key. Even those of you whose word is less than bond are still attracted to the road ahead for the sheer payout or danger, both of which promise to be high.

As dusk approaches at the end of a long day of travel, the setting sun behind you, the mountain looming ahead of you, and thick forest to either side of the road, Cassandra's ears pick up. Someone or something is moving in the forests to the south of you. A large group. You can hear them slow at your approach as well as their whispers they meant to keep secret. You have heard the gutteral sounds of Goblin before even if you can not understand the course speech. From the sounds of it though, there are many and it does not seem as if they realize you have noticed them.

My feet ache and my pack seems heavier than when I started even though my rations have dwindled. Following the others through the forest trails up to the home of Shimazu I have time to think. My mind drifts back and forth from gold and treasure all the way to pain and death. I have no idea what I've gotten into, the Oroboros Guild seems interested in just the payout of these adventures. If they aren't looking out for their employees then I'm in the same spot I was 2 months ago.

I am very used to staring at butts while going up hills and waiting (praying) for some action. Cassandra turns her head just slightly and I know they heard something. The first chance I get I tried to hide, my clunky armor making noise, and I tuck behind a tree.

As I am observing what is going on I think to myself "I need to purchase a breastplate, this crap armor is too loud."

Cassandra is terrified. On the high seas she knows how to face down countless enemies, but she has still to really gain her land legs. She motions to the others the direction of the danger, and then backs away, trying to keep her animal calm, trying to find a hiding place from where she can be helpful if things should turn violent.

OOC How windy is it? Just planning ahead for maybe using Fog Cloud. Also would it be reasonable to assume I've seen a brown bear over the last month?

Fēng understand Cassandra's silent warnings and moves to hide. Thinking that if there is to be a fight more advantage can be gained if the group flanks their foes, Fēng heads for the foliage across the road opposite Urki's hiding place. Further more, he flies up to the top-most tree branches where he will have the best vantage point to sight the approaching goblin troop. He keeps a watchful gaze on the road but puts himself in the meditative state and the bodily pose for The Warrior's Calm Before Battle.

As the team moves to take up positions, a light breeze rolls through leaves of orange and red. Kildrak and Ai Shan seem nonplus as the other three hide.

Urki, though your chain mail makes it difficult, you move lithely through the trees and hide, waiting for a chance to strike.

Cassandra, your horse winnies softly and snorts as you calm it down but it quiets down and stays in place as you back away slowly to the other side of the road.

Fēng, As you rise to the higher boughs of the maples you can see the assemblage of goblins before you. There are at least sixteen of the creatures, nine of them are armed and have their hands on their weapons as they crouch, furtive looks on their faces. All are carrying loaded packs. You can see they have noticed, maybe not those that are hidden, but that your group has stopped in the road. The nine quietly creep into a line between the road and the remaining goblins.
Jun 17, 2015 3:45 am
Kildrak, sitting like a lord atop his cart, chuckles at the gensai woman. "Don't worry your pretty little head, mer-maid, the lot of us can handle anything this wood can muster. We'll 'ave ye back on your cursed ships with 'narry a scratch on ya."

He sounds confident but, but he gets ready anyway, palming the purple crystal he focuses his spells through and easing his battleaxe onto his lap, making it ready. His goats seem unimpressed by anything going on around them as they plod on with their heads down.
Jun 17, 2015 4:41 am
Sorry, they aren't advancing just repostioning themselves. Only Feng can see them moving right now though they don't see Feng.

However, you do know something is there and could stride up and walk right into them and say your taunt and keep your roll if you want. Actually you don't even have to know what's there, you can challenge them anyway since you at least know something is there.
Jun 17, 2015 6:10 am
Got it!

Ai Shan, hearing the approaching group, watches his traveling companions melt into the trees from the corners of his eyes. Goading his horse a few steps so he's even with Kildrak's cart, he starts into a jovial tale.

"You know, it's not true that dwarves can't sail. In fact, one of the best sailors I know is a dwarf. Well, knew. He drowned. That bugger could sail, but he sure couldn't swim in rough seas with those stubby little legs!" he laughs and takes out a javelin, twirling it idly in his ready hand.
Jun 17, 2015 7:05 am
I peer through the trees trying to see what Feng is looking towards. I Wonder if it is an Owlbear or something similar.

I, as quietly as possible creep towards the... I'm not even sure but I go that direction. Slowly moving from tree to tree in my LOUD AS CRAP armor muffled only by my black cloak. I ready my crossbow and keep my eyes and ears focused up the road. All I can hear from my current position is Ai Shan talk about dwarves and sailing. "ugh, dwarves" I mutter.

The two groups seem to be at an impasse. The Masters teach restraint and prudence, even in battle, but there is no use skulking about like a sewer rat, so Fēng leaves his hiding place. What is Ai Shan doing?! Clearly, he is trying to intimidate the goblins. That is wise, for it is taught, "The supreme warrior subdues the enemy without fighting." But why does talk of dwarves instead of coming forward and challenging the goblins directly?

Fēng wings over to Ai Shan, circling overhead. "Sixteen goblins. Nine are armed and taking defensive positions. The others carry packs filled with I know not what. Do you intend to taunt them into carelessness or do we take the fight to them? I shall watch from above and follow your lead." the young monk soars straight up into the air to circle high above, tracing the patterns of the battle form Falcon Guards the Summit.

"Nine f*****g goblins?" comes an unladylike voice from behind the bushes. "I crapped myself over nine armed goblins? And less of the mermaid, shortarse!"

She ties her horse to a tree and emerges onto the road, holding onto branches to keep her balance as if she were moving along a ship's deck.

"Let's 'ave 'em then. Once I catch sight of them, I can see 'ow mother nature can 'elp us against 'em. Are they plannin' on shootin', Feng? Or do they look like they want to board us, er charge us?". Looking round at everyone she says, "And what's our plan of attack? Makes a diff'rence to what spell I choose, see."

[OOC: Fēng is flying much too high to hear what anyone says. At any rate, the GM hasn't specified what kind if weapons the goblins are armed with.]
Jun 17, 2015 9:29 pm
Fēng flies up into the air, focusing his ki with his forms, drawing in his potential energy waiting to strike from on high. However, as you fly straight up, you lose the goblins through the canopy above them. Unable to hear your compatriots you watch from on high to follow their actions.

Cassandra lets loose a string of profanity that Ai Shan is all too familiar with as a former sailor himself. The three of you, including Kildrak are still on the road, with the dwarf still plodding ahead on his ram.

Because of your position Urki, I will give you advantage to Perception. I'll go ahead and roll it to keep things going and because it'll decide if you actually see the gobs as they move to stealth.

Urki, you can clearly see them now. While your team prepares for battle, you can make out the line of goblins that have positioned themselves in front of the others. The nine in front have ropy muscles, small as they are, they look tough as nails, ranging from young to elderly. One middle aged goblin stands in the center, wearing a chain shirt while the other eight wear leather. All bear at least some sort of weapon whether makeshift clubs made from boards with nails hammered through all the way up to the leader's ivory handled wakizashi. However, you notice something else as well as you peak from behind the mossy tree. The seven goblins that stand behind are clearly female. All sixteen of them have furtive gazes and when Cassandra starts swearing, you see the nine brace themselves for battle.

Ai stops and pulls his horse around as Cassandra comes out of the trees.

"Well, lass, if it's a fight they want and right here on the road, that's fine by me. Maybe fine by some others hanging out and up the road, too. Small fare for plunder, though."

He draws his sword with his offhand in case they close.
Jun 18, 2015 4:17 am
Kildrak moves the cart a little farther up the path before hopping down and securing the cart. He turns back around and prepares for whatever is coming next.
Jun 18, 2015 6:59 am
Urki maintains his position just a little ahead of the others. He steady's his crossbow on his elbow aimed at the Goblin in a chain shirt.

If he moves any closer Urki will let loose a bolt, in his hidden position he's positive he can hit the leader harder than normal.

Urki looks back at his comrades and just allows them to stir up the action. He waves them forward and then gives them a *thumbs up*

If I'm hidden I should have advantage on an attack roll, correct?
Jun 18, 2015 7:05 pm
Seeing Urki's signal, Cassandra moves towards the goblins with a much more confident air. She looks carefully over the edge of her raised shield, and hefts her driftwood staff, ready to cast Shillelagh if combat breaks out. Having said that, she has no particular preference for killing over letting live, so she is also ready to talk if the goblins are not immediately aggressive.

Fēng realizes that if he has lost sight of the goblins then they most likely have lost sight of him. The Masters' teachings come to him again, "Should the enemy strengthen his van, he will weaken his rear; should he strengthen his rear, he will weaken his van; should he strengthen his left, he will weaken his right; should he strengthen his right, he will weaken his left. If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak."

Remembering the goblins' defensive position with their combatants in the front line, Fēng begins maneuvering in a wide arc to surprise the enemy from the rear.

As Cassandra moves forward defensively, you see some of the younger goblins pull back and the center goblin calls out to the flanks. Whatever he says emboldens them and they find resolve to stand firm. He still has only his hand on his blade, ready to draw it and blood in the same moment but you can see it now, staring them down face to face. There is fear in their eyes. You can see some of the elderly goblins that make up the flanks are missing limbs, hands cut off at the wrist, wooden legs from the knees down. The fear looks fresher and less hidden in the eyes and body language of the younger goblins but in the older ones, and in the eyes one in the center, it is mixed with pure resolve. They will fight you to the death if such must be the case. Urki supports you from your left and you can tell that they are focused on you and your advance. Ai Shan and Kildrak have not advanced but they support you from the rear.

Meanwhile, Fēng, you are lost in the canopy above them as you move to flank them from the rear. Knowing their relative position, you manuever into place to drop behind their numbers and strike in accordance with the teachings of the arts of war that you were taught. Your masters, if they showed such emotions between their hard lessons, would surely be proud that you have learned their lessons so well.

Be sure to seperate character knowledge and player knowledge.

I see Cassandra and the Goblins stare each other down and am unsure about her next move. I whisper a spell to myself thaumaturgy and shake the ground underneath the Goblins, trying to frighten them or give Cassandra and the others the jump.

I hope they didn't hear me whisper that.

Seeing Cassandra advance at the ready, Ai Shan swings a leg over and drops from one side of his saddle. He advances to Cassandra's side, weapons drawn but not up yet. He eyes the goblin party arrayed before her warily as he approaches.

"They don't look like raiders. What think you? Spare or slaughter them?"
Jun 19, 2015 5:59 pm
Seeing the maimed goblins troubles Cassandra. The shark eats the smaller fish, but it does not deliberately wound and let live. To Ai Shan she says, "No point in slaughterin' 'alf dead goblins, unless they're set on f-in' us up." She lowers her shield to a more neutral position, and lowers her staff to her side. She hopes Ai Shan and Kildrak will follow suit. She sees the ground tremble beneath the goblin's feet, the look of terror in their eyes, and follows this in a firm but not overtly aggressive voice, "Ho, land lubbers! Will you parley?."

ooc Sorry I missed a post before posting there. Hope my edit makes things make sense.

Kildrak looks around cautiously as Ai Shan and Cassandra discuss the possibility of parleying with the goblins. You see the eyes of the leader soften for just a second when all of a sudden the ground begins to shake beneath their feet. One of the youngest goblins, on the left flank, startles and jumps forward to attack Cassandra with his homemade club. The boss yells, "Greeb gnark!" but it is too late as a few others jump in behind the startled youth. Three total jump out at the druid to attack, weapons in one hand, iron pot lids and woks as made into shields with rope or strips of cloth in the other. "Gren! GREEB GNARK!" the boss yells again as the attacks come in.

As a bonus action, the young goblins use Nimble Escape to use the Disengage action to prevent opportunity attacks on them as the scamper around your area. All three use the Attack action using improvised weapons at a +4 to hit and 1d4+2 damage. They have leather armor and shields giving them AC 15 if you should choose to retaliate.

While the instigator misses, the other two that follow strike true against their targets, one grazing Cassandra and the other connecting solidly with the large mass that is Ai Shan.

Cassandra lets out an involuntary, "f..." as the two goblins attack. One thuds into her hardwood shield, the other gets round her defences. Simultaneously her sea-green eyes harden, and the green glass on the end of her staff glows gently. With a force above and beyond that suggested by her wispy frame, she strikes out at the nearest goblin to her, intending to knock it out.

Kildrak moves forward to get a better angle on the band of goblins. Seeing the three that acted have been dealt with, and the rest are still holding back, the dwarf intones a spell. His crystal focus glows with a baleful energy, but does not discharge.

"Settle down ya'wee beasties. Put your weapons, DOWN! Let's not go killin' folk tha'don't need it!"

Kildrak is using the Readied Action. The Trigger is "Any Goblin approaches Cassandra or Ai Shan with a weapon" He has cast Eldritch Blast and is holding it. (Ready Action pg. 193, concentration pg. 203 in the PHN for reference)This is of assuming the three goblins have been dispatched and there are no more obvious attackers. Cassandra and Ai Shan knock out the jumpy goblins but not before Urki attacks the goblin boss.

His softening eyes go from Cassandra to the bolt in his gut. Those of you who have fought goblins before have seen their leaders carelessly sacrifice goblin minions to attacks meant to hit them. This one just stares at the bolt for a long second before looking back up to the party. You can see betrayal in his eyes then which flashes to anger as he spots Urki behind a tree holding a crossbow. He shouts, "Gren yark! GNARK!!!" He turns to the goblins behind him and points off in the distance adding, "Daganee!" All at once, the goblins start moving. The most of the right flank collapses on Urki along with the boss. Two elderly goblins break off to engage Cassandra and Ai Shan as an Eldritch Blast flies over their heads. The seven goblins that stood in the back ranks begin to run into the forest, heading north, away from the road. Fēng flies overhead, ready to cut off their retreat.

All attacking goblins start by using a bonus action Nimble Escape to get into position without provoking attacks of opportunity. Three with improvised weapons and one with the wakizashi use the Attack action against Urki, one against Cassandra, one against Ai Shan. The seven other goblins Dash away from the battle.

The Goblins take positions around Urki to pin him to the tree. Two hit (for a total of 10 damage).

Any qualms that Cassandra might normally have about fighting the weak or infirm vanish as soon as she feels the searing pain from the elder goblin's attack. Fēng clears the canopy just in time to see the goblins break formation and attack. He takes in Ai Shan with two goblins at his feet, and defending a wounded Cassandra against two more. He registers several goblins, including one who appears to be the leader, at the base of Urki's tree.

Master Qin's words echo in Fēng's mind: "Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt."

He tucks his wings and goes into a spiraling dive: Star Falls From Heaven. He aims a spear thrust at a nerve point in the lead goblin's neck where a perfectly aimed blow will stun him, and follows up with a swipe with the spear-butt to the back of the knees. He then plants the spear butt in the ground and, his legs fanning wide with the spear as his pivot, delivers one taloned kick each to the two adjacent goblins.

Two weapon attacks versus the leader: spending one ki for a Stunning Strike, and another one if he makes his CON save (DC 14) against the first.

Another ki for Flurry of Blows: one unarmed strike each against two adjacent goblins. Both stunning. So yes, I will burn 4 or 5 ki here, depending on the lead goblin's first saving throw. If either of my kicks land, target must save (STR, DC 14) or go flying 15ft (Open Talon Technique)

Jun 22, 2015 2:01 am
The attack goes about as well as planned. The male goblins throw themselves up against a superior force as hard as they can. Only one goblin remains and as he watches the rest of his troupe fall around him, he tries to make one last desperate attack on Urki.

His attack bounces off Urki's normal armor, not even penetrating through to his magical defenses. As you all look up you can no longer see the other goblins that ran to the north, now lost in the chaos.

Cassandra moves to the south side of a tree on the road's edge, and gestures for her comrades to do the same, against trees near to her. When everyone is in position she says in a loud whisper, "Those other green-skinned f-ers have gone and dug themselves in, about 20 fathoms north of the path, hiding under leaves. I say we ring 'em in and find out what they're up to. They've no stomach for a fight, but I want to know what the f they're up to."
Jun 22, 2015 5:23 pm
Fēng replies by quoting Master Shen, "Those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by the enemy."

"If we seek information we need only rouse these prisoners." he says, lifting the boss goblin by the pack straps. "Perhaps our large & frightening friend can persuade this one to talk." he gestures to Ai Shan.
Jun 23, 2015 2:03 am
Ai Shan taken the goblin leader by the scruff of the neck and shakes him vigorously.

Jun 23, 2015 2:47 am
The goblin boss wakes up as Ai Shan shakes him around. As he rouses to the shouting, he looks at the bodies of his comrades, one dead, the others unconscious. Taking it all in, along with the foam flecking from the barbarians mouth as he brandishes the greatsword in one hand, his eyes go wide. "Please, no hurt Blen. Blen will speak. Blen will tell you all you want to know." As you shake him, you can see crisscrossed scars along his skin. "Blen and others, we run. We farmers. My wife, she pregnant. Shimazu, he take sons and daughters. Others too, tired of his soldiers, always cruel, always laughing as they cut off hands and feet if not enough rice is made. We escape, find better life. My family, my clan, we bond together. We see you and grow afraid. I have seen your type before. Always fighting. I figure better to hide. See if you leave." He looks down to the crossbow bolt still sticking from his armor. "I see, I was not wrong. At least our women have gone and we can die good death knowing that you cannot harm them too." Even scared you can see the defiance born of abuse in his eyes and he stares at you accusingly.
Jun 23, 2015 4:46 am
"You draw blood near a shark, the shark will bite," Ai Shan snarls at the goblin. "Tell me about Shimazu's fortress. Everything. Quickly, or I go after the rest of your scampering bilge rats where they're hiding in the trees and write my name in their blood."

I already rolled a 20 for the initial intimidate check. Do I need to roll another?

"Ha, you funny. Those who attack first with quaking earth blame us for first blood. You no different than Shimazu. You deserve each other. Village up ahead, maybe one more day up road. Fortress well protected. Throw rocks from on high. Use farmers as target practice when bored. Mountain has deep trench that spirals up to top. Then rope bridge to actual home. Do not know much about home besides the Widow of the Coals. That is the true reason none have the power to oppose Shimazu. She watches over family. All said about her is whispers. None know truth. But me know she is reason they take the newborns. There is way around mountain if you no take road. Go through forest. High ground may let you approach to rock throwers without being seen. Have heard that you can climb up mountain to get to mansion but very dangerous. Would need four arms to defend self and hold rocks. This is all I know. Now let go or show your true nature. I have seen the face of Shimazu in yours. Lords of war all same."
Jun 23, 2015 1:03 pm
Fēng touches Ai Shan's arm and gently frees the goblin from the big man''s grasp. "This was a mistake, Blen. We regret our part in it. Shimazu is a blight on this land that has afflicted all." The monk helps the goblin up. "You and yours have nothing to fear from us any longer. Go in peace. Leave it to us to war on the warmonger."
Jun 23, 2015 4:23 pm
"Before we let you miserable grobi go, tell me this abou' the Witch o'Coals...Does she reside wit'in the fortress itself? Or does she keep herself away?"

Cassandra puts her shield on her back, puts one hand on her wounded side and closes her eyes for a fraction of a second, reaching out her senses to hear the nearest stream or underground water source. Healing energies flow through her body.

Urki watches the team patch up goblins and chat with the leader. It's like they have never seen a horde of battle hardened goblins before.

Urki looks at his side and sees he was cut by a dull blade. "It hurts" he thinks to himself. He should do something about that.

Urki leaves everyone else and especially the goblins to their own devices. Goblins don't believe in Olladra and they can't be trusted he doesn't feel the need to mingle with them but will keep an ear out for information.

"Ah, not witch. The Widow. She scary monster that hide under goblin children's beds. My mother say, 'be good or Widow will find you.' Hobgoblins have order of warriors. Believe in honor. All women. All married to blade and fire and no man. When one dies, she is given new armor and is buried as Widow of the Coals. My mother say, when I was young, this Widow not stay buried. Had been there since before she was child. Others say I lie but I know, Shimazu he take our children, he take our children to her. Some he let stay. Never know when he will come. But I know it is soon. My wife, my child, will not be taken." He begins to help his goblin comrades to their feet. He looks at the one hit by the eldritch blast (can't nonlethal with ranged), "This Grin. Always smiling. No longer. Come," he motions to some of his goblins, "we bury before we leave." The goblins use their makeshift clubs and shields to dig a shallow grave and place Grin in it before covering him with dirt and leaves, doing their best to leave little sign of the grave. Blen finds his wakizashi and bows his head to Fēng, Cassandra, and Kildrak while avoiding eye contact with Ai Shan and Urki. They ready themselves to keep moving.
Jun 23, 2015 9:58 pm
"We can'na know if that grobi is tell in' the whole of the truth, but tha' bit about this 'Widow' was a good bit'o info. Could just be a wives tale, but more likely it is an undead creture. Many types o'dem feed on the flesh. Saved us a nasty surprise 'e did. Almost makes me feel bad 'or offin' 'is man...heh almost. They're not like to find much better down the 'ill. But I guess they got'a try."

With that Kildrak re-slings his axe and pockets his crystal and makes his way back to the cart and goats.
Jun 24, 2015 3:23 am
Ai Shan smirks and sheathes his sword, walking over to pick up the javelin he dropped at the start of the fighting. He twirls it idly between his fingers and watches the goblins retreat with a wary eye.

"Should have killed them. Many a wanderer has been stabbed in the dark after leaving those wretches at their back." He pauses a second and glances briefly at the others. "Still, that is good information, if it is even half true. Scaling the walls is a good idea if such an ascent exists, and a fair warning about walking dead. We should enter the forest and get off the road as soon as we can. If they're refugees, they are probably not the only ones, and desperate people are trouble."

After Urki is all healed up he waits for Ai Shan to take the lead and follows closely behind.

Urki begins a monologue not directed at anyone but those who will listen. "I think we went too easy on them, ya know I've been attacked by goblins before. Back in Dragonwick, about 30 miles north in the hills just before the dragonlands. We had a good load of meat and Dragon parts. We were also celebrating a little louder than usual, our team leader, Grendal, that night had brought a never ending flask filled with some southern wine... Well I never saw the leader or that flask again. He went for a piss on the edge of the road, we heard a yell, but no traces of him. After a few hours of searching we found goblins, hundreds. A few of them tried to flank us and we dispatched them and then left the rest of the hoard. Man would I like to find Grendal again."

Urki remains quiet after his sermon and becomes hyper alert looking for the goblins that fled early on. All the memories from his past are flooding to him.

"Is this regret?" he says silently to himself.

"Nah, we shouldn't 'ave been fightin' 'em in the first place. They was just some sh**y little mackerel escaping from a shark. Me, I want to skewer that shark and his undead selkie. Sounds like the forest's the way to go..."

Although she speaks boldly, her eyes flit over the group, looking for someone to lead her. They settle on Feng.
Jun 24, 2015 7:20 pm
Urki's eyes flit around looking for danger, goblins hiding just beyond his reach. All he see are the retreating forms of the goblins that you've left behind. Fēng moves to the front of the column to scout ahead but as you start to move again, you realize night is settling in. The sun sets behind you and the stars come out. The moon is a faint sliver in the sky and has been getting smaller for a couple weeks now. You're not sure whether to make camp or travel through the night, possibly attracting the attention of nocturnal denizens of the deep forest if indeed you will try to sneak through it to the mountain. Sleep will allow you a fresh start but a slow bushwhack will give you a head start.

First, you need to decide what your course of action is. Make camp vs travel now. Travel the road vs travel the forest. Or any other ideas that want to be thrown in the mix. We'll go from there once we know where there is.

Went back to check. It looks like most of you want to travel through the forest. The real question now is whether you are going to travel in the dark or not in which case it could be a skill challenge to avoid random encounters and to creep up on the guards. I mean, it'll be a skill challenge either way but the skills will be different in the dark.
Jun 25, 2015 12:42 am
Do we have any idea how much farther it would be to get to the place that the goblin suggested? If it is close, like an hour or two hike, then Kildrak will vote to camp for the night. If its far then he will agree to keep moving if the party agrees to doing some recon once we get close. Oh and he will grumbke the whole way about leaving the road for to trip over the blasted tree roots, but agree to keep to the woods

Cassandra pushes on with the party through the forest. She finds the solid land unusual, but she can see and hear the workings of water everywhere - every stream, every droplet of moisture on the leaves, every gouge left in the land by ancient river or glacier reminds her of her natural element, but also of how far she has strayed from the sea. She feels useless as a guide in this alien landscape, but keeps her senses open to danger on the one hand, and a defensible place to spend the night on the other.

You push on through the night, the barbarian leading the way. After a few hours on high alert, watching small streams flow down the slight grade, scaring birds and boars out of your path, the forest begins to get the best of you all and you begin to get tired. As your eyes get heavy, you find a small clearing, moss hanging off of the maples, ferns growing from the ground. You discuss who will take first watch and whether it is sensible to light a fire.

Tomorrow will be a long climb through the forest and up the mountain lowlands. So as you set the watch, you all fall asleep after making what light conversation you will.

First to speak up can be first watch. Whoever posts next can be woken up by the previous person and so on. When you are on watch, roll perception. I will roll a few random night encounters and their times based on an eight hour long rest. Night gathers and now your watch begins.

The sounds of the forest here are not what you are used to back home. Your step is out of sync as you try to blend as one with the symphony of the trees and bugs at night. As you crouch, hiding, watching for danger, danger finds it's way around you. You don't even know something is wrong until the first blows rain down upon you. Two clubs fall in the darkness from behind you and strike at the same time as you hear a draconic incantation, "Drazz fo ruun!" A small ball of flame appears and illuminates the scene. Two lizardfolk are attacking you, one more each for your sleeping comrades, all holding rock axes and spiked shields made from boar tusks lashed to turtle shells. One that wears furs, animal teeth, and holds a flame in his hands looks at you with an inscrutable face as the blows begin to rain down on you and your team. It seems whatever his lucky teeth are, they were more lucky than your shark.

6 Lizardfolk and a Lizardfolk Shaman have crept up on you in the night. The Lizardfold attack with their Multiattack, each striking with club and shield. The Shaman uses Produce Flame to illuminate the scene and guide his attackers. All attacks have advantage. The first attack against sleeping targets that hits is a critical hit but will wake target up. Sorry for so many rolls.

It's a particularly dextrous lizardman that has climbed up to Fēng's roost in a branch 10 feet off the ground. Fēng's eyes fly open and faster than thought, delivers a talon strike to the nerve center in the lizardman's neck. The monk's next instinct is to take to flight. He grabs the lizardman and hoists him into the air before dropping him from 60 feet up.

Eh. Tried to post this a couple of times but the attacks rolls weren't saving, only the damage rolls.

"GRAN'TAK" Kildrak shouts when the Lizard man hits him. He rolls away and pops up on his knees (5-foot step and stand up), he has both an ae and his focus in his hands as he was sleeping with them at the ready. Then he let's out a twin bikt of Arcane energy.

Ai Shan grunts in surprise and pain, with his attackers at close quarters he drops his javelin and whips his heavy two-handed sabre around with a fluid motion.

"RUN THE PLACE RED!!" he screams in berzerker fury.

Ai Shan has activated Rage with Frenzy: Gains advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, gets an additional +2 damage to melee attacks and as of next round has 3 attacks per round for the next minute

Both Ai Shan's attacks this round are directed toward the target that made the unfortunate mistake of striking him

Kildrak, Cassandra, and Feng all get 2 hp back due to the late night phantom criticals.

Urki casts Shield of Faith as a bonus action and swipes with dagger with his Attack action. His dagger misses Lizardfolk 5.
Feng attacks with a Stunning Strike but treeward bound Lizardfolk 6 blocks with his shield and rolls Athletics to contest the grapple. Feng is successful in his grapple and drops Lizardfolk 6 who is crushed dead in the fall.
Kildrak hits Lizardfolk 3 with Eldritch Blast but

From Cassandra’s hand flows the spirit of the sea as spectral streams water lash out and grab hold of the two aggressive lizardfolk in front of him. The lizardfolk shaman has an almost discernable rage burning in his unflinching eyes with the still burning fire of his cantrip reflecting ever shifting shadows across his face.

Urki’s hand glows as Olladra answers his prayers. An ethereal fire with sickles flames flow up his armor, fortifying his chainmail with the fervor of her blessings. His dagger lashes out at the scaly beastman but is turned away by the shell of the tortoise that hugs his arm.

In Fēng's head, the voice of Master Qin rings out in irony, "The rising of birds in their flight is the sign of an ambuscade." You think to reflect on this after the battle. But none of that matters now and the thoughts filter from you mind as you begin to focus your ki from on high.

Kildrak rolls under the attacks of the Lizardfolk and darks tendrils of fiendish energy hasten from his crystal through the creature. The lizardfolk coughs up a tendril and looks to keel over and die when he slams his shield and club arms to his chest. He heaves up the remainder of the Paz'azast’s dark energies and looks to Kildrak. A strangling challenge bellows up from his lungs and into the warlock's face.

Ai Shan loses his footing from the uneven group here in the forest. He slashes as he falls and scrambles under the blows but the two warriors have no problem turning them away and stepping to their sides. He catches and steels himself for the incoming ripostes.

Lizardfolk Shaman is incapacitated and cannot take actions. It rolls a Wisdom Save DC15 at the end of its turn. It fails and is still Paralyzed.
Lizardfolk 1 uses its Multiattack, striking at Ai Shan with Rock Axe and Spiked Shield. It hits with its Rock Axe for 2 damage from your resistance from Rage and misses with its Spiked Shield.
Lizardfolk 2 uses its Multiattack, striking at Ai Shan with Bite and Rock Axe. It misses with both attacks.
Lizardfolk 3 is bloodied and uses its Multiattack, striking at Kildrak with Bite and Spiked Shield. It misses with its Bite and hits with its Spiked Shield for 5 points of damage.

The lizardfolk warrior and shaman fail to break free from the genasi druid, Cassandra, as they rack their brains against the watery hold.

Urki is set upon by the large creature in from of him as it rips at unarmored sides with his teeth and axe.

The warrior in front of Kildrak feints high with a bite attack but rips low with his shield, catching the warlock in the gut.

Ai Shan deftly dodges the incoming attacks but catches the rock axe to the jaw. Chips of stone fly off the axe and the frenzied barbarian launches into the unsuspecting warriors.

Fēng is finally fully awake. From his vantage point from on high he opens up his battle awareness and takes in the scene below him: Lotus Flower Opens. He realizes he has left his weapons at his roost. "No matter," the monk muses, "I am the weapon!"

His allies each seem to be holding their own so Fēng decides to go for their ambushers' leader who at the moment is held helpless thanks to the druid Cassandra. The monk tucks his wings and goes into a twisting dive that ends with three simultaneous talon strikes at the paralyzed shaman's face: Flying Mongoose Strike

Feng's status as the party leader in Cassandra's mind is further bolstered by his wise attack on the leader of the lizardfolk.

For those who are interested, Cassandra's flaw is that she always follows the leader, so I need to pick someone as leader! It's nothing personal - just makes most sense from where Cassandra's standing at the moment. If someone else establishes themselves as party leader, Cassandra will follow them instead.

For her own part, she channels her rage first into her staff, and then through the staff at the adjacent paralyzed lizardman.

Casting Shillelagh as a bonus action.

Ai Shan slams into Lizardfold 1 with two attacks and Lizrdfolk 2 with one attack. He hits Lizardfolk 1 for 12 points of massive damage and hits a second time (if still alive) 8 damage respectively and into Lizardfolk 2 for 17 points of massive damage. Lizardfolk 1 and 2 have to roll Constitution DC15 for damage from an attack that was more than half their HP. They both save and are still remarkably on thier feet.
Kildrak casts Vampiric Touch against Lizardfolk 3. The melee spell attack misses.
Urki casts Inflict Wounds against Lizardfolk 5. The melee spell attack misses.
Feng attacks three times against the paralyzed Shaman. The first attack hits for 15 points of massive damage, the second attack hits for 12, and the third attack hits for 12 damage. Lizardfolk Shaman has to roll Constitution DC15 for damage from an attack that was more than half its HP. The Lizardfolk Shaman fails the Con Save and suffers system shock and is stunned. The second attack knocks it out since Feng has previously stated he subdues his enemies. Because of your remaining movement, the attack will be against the other held Lizardfolk. The third attack hits Lizardfolk 4 and does 12 damage.
Cassandra attacks Lizardfolk 4. The melee attack misses. Inspiration can be spent to give yourself advantage on a roll. Since you can't have advantage on a roll more than once, you retain your Inspiration but miss the attack.

Ai Shan's blade tears at the lizardfolk around him and each of his attacks rip into the creatures. The first one finds a way to hold himself together long enough to strike one more time but is too slow to connect. The second however tears a chunk out of Ai Shan's shoulder with its sharp teeth.

Kildrak, Urki and their foes lunge at each other in a dance of death, each blocking and dodging the other's strikes.

Fēng dive bombs the shaman and with two well placed talon swipes, tears up the face of the shaman. The shaman's eyes and fire go dim and Fēng flits over to help Cassandra dispose of her paralyzed problem.

As the Shaman's fire dies, darkness covers the battlefield, the light of the crescent moon too thin to provide enough light to fight in.

Unless you have darkvision, all attacks are made with disadvantage until a light source is made.

Those who fight Golden Talon monks often forget that their wings are weapons too. With a sweep of his wings Fēng somersaults into the air lashes out at the lizardman still paralyzed by Cassandra's spell. Two wing strikes to the arms and a talon thrust to the chest: Iron Rooster Strike.

*Advantage from paralysis would've cancelled disadvantage from the dark but thanks for the light anyway. Maybe it will light the way for the others as well.
*Autocrit vs Paralyzed.

Kildrak channels his hungry energy and it is satisfied as it feeds on the life of the lizardfolk warrior. You feel strength flow back into you as the lizardfolk desicates in a matter of seconds. Cassandra works fast to light the scene in time for Fēng to whallop the held creature. Two attacks and its eyes roll back into his skull. You move to assist Urki as he calls out for Ai Shan. The barbarian is too busy cutting down the two lizards that have been on him since the beginning. One slice halves the first while a second splits the other tooth to tail.

The last lizardfolk left sensing trouble wants to run but is flanked by Urki and Fēng. He cries out a fearsome warcry and launches himself one last time at the diminutive cleric.

His last attacks are turned by armored gnome before he is set upon by the team.

Sure of the combined success of Urki and Feng against the last pitiful lizardman, Cassandra looks around to see if her companions need healing.

In the meantime, she draws in power from the whisper of a nearby stream, and washes away some of her own hurts.

I haven't been able to follow who got how badly wounded, so please PM me if you're in need of a healing spell or two and I'll add them to this post.

"Don't see these in the far south. Too cold. Too stupid," he snarls, his blade stabbing the still-breathing lizardfolk shaman in the throat on his way around the perimeter. "Need a proper rest." He begins drifting back to the camp, fishing his dropped javelin out of the groundcover.

Ai Shan now has 1 level of fatigue from his Frenzy. He needs a long rest, so it may not be necessary to heal him.

As the last lizard folk is desiccated by Kildrak's touch, the team remains on alert for more lizardfolk warriors. Fend takes to the sky while Urki takes to the comfort offered by sleep. Feng can see that the animals, though upset by the skirmish, have remained unmolested. As he finished his loop, Cassandra uses her torch to start a small fire in camp. Ai Shan liners back to camp and starts to sleep now that his watch is over. Feng's patrol does not turn up any more lizardfolk hiding in the bushes. As he takes watch, the others start to nod off to sleep.

Feng's perception roll is good for his watch. Kildrak and Cassandra still have watches.

The morning breaks during Cassadra's watch. The rest of the night went without incident and as she rouses you from slumber, you look at the carnage from the night before. Your campsite is littered with the bodies of the fallen. As you rifle through their belongings, which are not much, you find a few objects of value. There are seventy crudely made gold pieces along with a small well carved flute that you could probably get appraised by someone in Agartha. As the party gets their things together, a murder of crows descend on their small clearing and begin to pick at the lizardfolk remains.
Jul 5, 2015 8:19 pm
Alright crew let's get moving. Sun's up and I'm itching to get out of this clearing.

"Right. Let's be off," says Ai Shan, bright eyed after his rest. "We'll investigate this way up and over and see if that runt was telling us right. The less we're seen on the road to this fortress the better." He sniffs at the lizardfolk he slew last night and looks them over for valuables or other interesting baubles. "They don't look any prettier in the light. Or more appetizing."
Jul 6, 2015 7:42 am
"Obviously, walls don't present a problem for me. As for getting a rope up there for you all to climb, that will hardly take me a moment. Blen did speak of defenses on the wall though. Rock throwers, or other defenses besides. Even if we were to take the defenders by force they would alert the entire fortress. We will have to resort to stealth. We can plan better when we've seen the place but I imagine the best way would be to infiltrate the place under cover of darkness. You could all risk the climb or I could fly you in one by one, set you atop the wall. We would only need to overcome what opposition there is at the top. As quietly as possible. It is said: 'Why destroy when you can win by stealth and cunning?'"

Cassandra looks from Ai Shan to Feng. They both speak like leaders, but at present they are not in conflict.

"So through the forest we go, me hearties! Can't stand another minute of this stinking f-ing lizards, anyway. I can help with the wall climbing when we get there," she says, waving her glass-tipped staff around significantly.

As she goes, Cassandra relies on her excellent senses, though she has some foreboding about the castle on the rock.

Relying on passive perception. I take it we're going to move at normal speed?

You leave the stinking corpses and crows to their meal. The path through the forest that Blen indicated begins to climb at a steep rate as you make your way through the thick maple forest. The maple begins to give way to tall shoots of bamboo that is just as thick if not thicker. There is little noise other than the sounds of your march as you make your way up the mountainside. As you near where the bamboo begins to thin you can here a odd set of noises. A voice in Goblin calls out. Then loud creeking followed by a dull thunk. Then the sounds of harsh laughter. The laughter peters out and is replaced by the sound of heaving and gears creaking. Then the whole set repeats. You aren't sure what lies ahead but you still have the cover of the bamboo if you want to creep up to the scene which is probably a good 100ft away. The bamboo cover ends in about 50ft.

"So. What's next? Who wants to run some recon. and fin' out' what's going' on o'er there? Waveborn, 'imagine you got the best skills in this area. Turn in'a'sumpin small and furry and take a look aye?"

The three adventurers move forward, Ai Shan and Urki moving silently through shoots as
Cassandra slinks as a cat. As you get to the edge of the bamboo, the scene before you opens up. A group of Hobgoblins man a mangonel. One, wearing stylized plates of armor over his extremities and a simple kabuto with no mask shouts orders at the others that man the catapult. They work in unison to load the small boulder payload and then crank the tension down. One looks through a large iron sight and then cranks a gear to adjust the mangonel's aim. The obvious captain shouts a command at his crew of six and the stone flies into the air and down into the valley below. It is too hard to see what they are shooting at and Cassandra paws forward out of the shelter of the bamboo to see. Below, a simple goblin farmer's cart is stuck in the mud of a rice paddy. As he and a few others struggle to unstick the cart, the mangonel boulder careens toward them and takes out one of the two oxen at the front. Laughter again goes up through the group as they watch the farmers scurry for their lives. Cassandra lets out a involuntary hiss and the hobgoblins look over. One says, "Blar grob mow mow. Gur hobgrob!" He licks his lips and starts toward the cats as the others turn back to their work.
Jul 8, 2015 4:57 am
Cassandra the mow mow has no intention of being grobbed by Blar - no doubt to be made into a furry catapult stone or a hobgoblin snack! She skitters away from the hobgoblin and up a tree in a different direction from where Ai Shan and Urki are hiding. She is looking for a branch where she could sit as a human should she decide to change back.

Cats have a speed of 40 ft. and a climb speed of 30 ft., so this probably doesn't need a roll, but just in case here is one.

Urki whiwpers, You guys think we can talk them up? I say we see ask them straight up what all the fuss is about. They are slinging whatever they can find in a mangorel. I have two votes, we either help them or we sneak attack the captain for distance. What do you guys say?

Fēng nods. "I surmise these are the rock throwers Blen said have been firing on innocent farmers. And now they are after our friend Cassandra. I'll deal with the captain. Take out the others. Let's do it swiftly and quietly. There may be other mangonel teams nearby." Fēng only waits long enough for Urki to let fly with his crossbow before he himself explodes into action. Rope dart whirling in a deadly blur, his strikes come from all directions: Diamond Serpent Assault
*Two weapon attacks versus the captain: spending one ki for a Stunning Strike, and another one if he makes his CON save (DC 14) against the first. Another ki for Flurry of Blows, all against the captain until he goes down. If any of the flurries hit he must save (DEX, DC 14) or be knocked prone (Open Talon Technique).
*If the captain goes down and there are leftover strikes they go to adjacent hobgoblins. In which case the condition imposed by flurry strikes will be getting knocked back 15 feet (hopefully right off the cliff) unless they make a STR save, DC 14.
*All of Fēng's attacks are nonlethal.

"So no sneaking up on them in the dead of night I guess." Kildrak moves close enough that he can see his 'allies' (probably not Cassandra in the tree) and invokes One with the Shadows and becomes invisible, he figures the others can take care of this one hob, and when it's buddies come running to answer the screams, he will have the drop on them.

Attack from the party's western position, Fēng descends upon the captain, lashing out with his rope dart and pummeling him with wing and talon. The rope dart draws blood once and he connects with both flurry attacks. A crossbow bolt shoots out from the bamboo where Urki hides but misses the unassuming captain. Cassandra dodges past the would be hobgoblin gourmand and climbs up some bamboo to the south. As the hungry hobgoblin turns to chase the mow mow, a javelin skewers him in temple and flows out the other side to stick in the ground some ten feet farther. A second javelin hits a hobgoblin at the side of the catapult as Ai Shan connects with both attacks. The small band is flustered from the sudden attack and the captain is stunned and knocked to the ground. The hobgoblins jaws go slack as the one with the javelin sticking from it looks down with a lack of comprehension.

(In the wake of a successful surpise round and a stunned captain, the remaining hobgoblins are slow to act and the party is afforded initiave over the shock and awed group.)

Cassandra the cat climbs down from the bamboo, and turns back into her genasi form.

Before the hobgoblins have a chance to get themselves together, Cassandra focuses her energy, drawing power from the ground water in the cliff, and releases it. From the ground under the hobgoblin's feet suddenly sprout broad strands of kelp, grasping at their ankles and making the ground slippery.

Some of cat's movement to climb down, then bonus action to change back. Casting Entangle at the most advantageous point to cover the most number of hobgoblins, starting with those nearest the PCs. 20 ft square. Ground becomes difficult terrain in any case. Str save against DC 15 or be held.

Urki sends another bolt over the head of the prone captain as Kildrak springs forth from invisibility to shoot two hobgoblins, killing one and collapses the wind out of the other, the laugher of Paz'azast blazing deep within you. The wounded hobgoblin has enough sense to dodge away from Ai Shan's first attack but is not so lucky as to escape them both as the barbarian cleaves the gearman in half. Cassandra causes a growth of vines to lash up and grabs three hobgoblins but one shakes them off and draws his longsword and shield. The other two remain stuck.

With three dead, the captain shakes himself awake and cries out to his remaining men, "GNARK! Gob gnar gren yark!" as he pushes himself from the ground and draws a large Ōdachi from a sheath at his hip. He attacks at Feng who's honor let the captain regain his feet while getting ready to dodge his attacks. The Captain swings twice with his greatsword but is unable to hit the fluid monk.

The hobgoblin that freed himself trudges forward through the vines enough to reach Ai Shan who he swings at while his two comrades use their turns to try to break their bonds. The Hobgoblin misses with his attack even with his captain yelling at him to attack. One of the remaing Hobgoblins breaks the vines and draws his sword and shield as well.

Ai Shan rips his sword from neck to navel of the hobgolbin that advanced on him. Cassandra hit the newly freed hobgoblin with a dart straight to the neck and the hobgoblin drops his shield to hold the wound closed while shock registers on his ugly face. Feng swipes at the captain who deftly avoids the worst of the hits only to dodge strait into an unexpected talon. Even so, he shakes off the stun and returns attack on the aarakocra. He yells a command at the hobgoblin holding his neck who is able to shake out of the the shock and advance on Feng, sword in hand. The two work together to punish the bird the best they can. The hobgoblin seige soldier does his best to harry the monk while the Captain delivers two punishing strikes. The hobgoblin's vicious attacks wound Fēng grievously. He staggers slightly and fights the urge to fly straight up to regain the upper hand - if he flies, he may be spotted by other mangonel crews! Through the haze of pain he sees the captain raise a horn to his lips to sound the alarm, and the young monk channels his energy for one last flurry before he blacks out. Suddenly he hears Cassandra yell and sees the horn fly out of the hobgoblin's hand! At the same time he hears Urki's voice and feels some of his strength returning. Fēng goes into an airborne twist, torso parallel to the ground, spear whirling to strike with spearhead and haft, his wings wrapped protectively around his vitals: Northern Whirlwind Defense

As a team you converge on the epicenter of the battler. Cassandra shoots verdant energies from her hands and summoms a thirsty sea vine that smells of kelp. It grasps the horn with a squelching noise as it rips it from the captains hands. Urki, thinking back to his time in Dragonwick and his team then, refused to let this companion fall. Ai Shan steps forward along with Kildrak and Feng to deal a punishing blow while the other two harry him, opening him up to the attack. The great sword of the southern peoples cuts through the captain, splashing even the bamboo in the vile black blood of the hobgoblins.

The final hobgoblin holding his neck closed with his hand looks at the five of you, each with the captain's blood on you, and drops his sword and falls to his knees.
Jul 16, 2015 6:45 pm
Breathing heavily, Fēng grasps Urki's shoulder in wordless thanks. Then he searches the hobgoblin captain's corpse for a spyglass or similar implement for sighting targets. "Cassandra has secured the horn, yes? That was a close call. Surely there are other defense emplacements nearby." He addresses the lone survivor, "You'd best tell us their positions unless you want my friends here to fire you from that mangonel."

Heeding Kildrak and Urki's warning, and not trusting the hobgoblin to speak the truth to Fēng, Cassandra goes back to the treeline, but then moves as close to the edge of cliff as she can within the forest. She hopes to find a place from where she can see along the cliff and take stock of the other mangonel positions. She finds it weird to be doing this kind of thing from landward, and even weirder that at the base of the cliff is not sea, but paddy fields.

Fēng nods his agreement to his companions' call for stealth. What had gotten into him? The Sanctuary Masters had often scolded him for such lapses in restraint. "Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays." Fēng would often quote defiantly. But only afterwards when he was alone - when there were no Masters to rap his wing joints with a cudgel.

"We had best conceal these bodies as well." the young monk says, and drags the hobgoblin captain's body into the treeline. He tosses the fallen captain's ōdachi to Ai Shan, then resumes searching for something useful like a spyglass, map, keys or the like. As he does this he looks expectantly at their captive. "I asked you a question."
Jul 18, 2015 11:47 pm
Fēng drags the captain's body to cover and throws the sword over to the barbarian. The other bodies continue to roast in the late morning sun. He finds what he is looking for in a side pouch of the captain's: an eight inch collapsible telescope made of brass and embellished with semi-precious stones.

Cassandra looks from the edge of the cliff and surveys the land. She sees in her head stellar eagles at the perch. But here, now, she was the perched bird. She could see the vista of paddies down below. A farmer and his family finish pushing the cart up from the muck, having cut ties with the dead ox. Small poorly thatched buildings and pensive goblin faces looking up towards the cliff face make up the village down below. The cliff on which Cassandra sits stretches and spirals up and in towards the center of the mountain. It completes at least another loop from where you are now on the spiral and you can see the cliff face that sits behind your perch and looks down at you. For the time being she doesn't see any more active firing siege weapons along the cliffs but can see more than a few batteries set up for defense along the cliff wall. She can't see over the cliffs edge behind and above her but can sense that a battery over head would make sense.

The hobgoblin captive shakes to see the froth at Kidlrak's mouth directed toward him as he is shuffled to within the tree line. Urki comes over and heals him with a touch of malice in his voice. Fēng reiterates his question looking with unfliching eyes at the captive. He spits out a few choice words with fear of the superior force arrayed against him, "Nib larg Ocm'nom. No speak! No speak Common!"

As Ai Shan holds the ōdachi in his hands, he notices a familiar symbol on the scabbard of the blade. It is that of two entwined droplets of blood around a sword. It is the makers' mark of the Blood Brothers.
Jul 19, 2015 6:55 pm
Fēng notes Ai Shan's intense study of the ōdachi and, knowing nothing of the man's past, mistakes it for a warrior's admiration for a well-crafted weapon. "A thing of beauty. I thought it might suit you."

The monk then turns his attention back to their prisoner, which he now binds and gags to stop his jabbering. He confers with Kildrak & Urki. "Do either of you speak goblin? If not then this prisoner is useless. We'd best double his bonds and hide him. Speaking of which, I'll should see to those corpses." He drags the hobgoblin corpses over to where their captain lies and does his best to conceal them in the underbrush. Finally, Fēng confers with Cassandra. With the aid of the captain's spyglass he confirms the position of each battery she points out, and tries to spot any that she might have missed.

"Nope, no Goblin talk here... Maybe we should just end him. I have no love for goblin-folk."
Jul 20, 2015 1:44 am
Kildrak picks a piece of bamboo and makes quick work of blasting it into a crude stylus. Then he blasts the ground in a 3'circle to make a patch of dirt. He draws a crude outline of the fortifications and puts an x where the first catapult is then points at it, then at the x again. Then he puts the stick at the hobgoblins feet and says "More. Where are the others?"
Jul 20, 2015 4:56 am
The hobgoblin looks down at Kildrak's drawing and then back at the warlock. He takes the stick fearfully and begins to draw Xs where you can only assume are more batteries. He draws them all the way around the spiral, one every sixty degrees or so. He draws the rest of the spiral as well. He draws a square at the center and one about halfway up.
Jul 20, 2015 5:34 am
"What are those?" he says haltingly, pointing at the squares. "Catapult, guards." pointing at the X's, then at the hobgoblins former station. Then back at the squares, "What?"
Jul 20, 2015 5:44 am
Ai Shan looks a while longer at the pirate's symbol on the odachi. His face is grim.

"Vendetta," he whispers.

"We must move. That artillery piece will have a relief. We need to be gone before they get here and raise an alarm. Kill this worm and let's be about it."
Jul 20, 2015 3:12 pm
Cassandra comes back to the party, sees the diagram drawn by the hobgoblin, and relates what she saw and surmised at the cliff edge.

Cassandra does not like the idea of killing the hobgoblin, but as Ai Shan ordered it, she lights up her staff, ready to strike it dead with her Shillelagh.

The rolls reflect Cassandra's lack of commitment to this action perfectly!

Fēng gently pushes Cassandra's weapon away. "We can knock him unconscious, hide him. Or we can give him a weapon and he can try his luck in single combat against Ai Shan. Or against me. But I will not suffer the dishonor of slaying a defenseless prisoner."

The hobgoblin is trying to understand Kildrak when Cassandra lashes out at him. Fēng intercepts as Urki ties up the prisoner. From nowhere, after he's done, a blade leaps to the cleric's hand but the hobgoblin manages to squirm away from Urki. Ai Shan however is too quick and his assault relentless. The first attack catches the soldier in the spine and as he arches from the wound, which kills him instantly, the second attack cleaves into him, spilling blood onto the grass. Fēng still holds Cassandra as the party watches the barbarian walk away.
Jul 21, 2015 6:30 am
Kildrak looks down at the dead hobgoblin, his expression blank. "Feng, I can'appreciate wha' you w're saying there, the dwarves haf their own codes of 'onor that woul'na allow a prisoner to be treated tha' way. However, this was'a hobgoblin. They're a treacherous and pathetic people. Had we taken him wit us, he would'a turned on us a'the first opportunity. Ha' we tied 'im up an left 'him, it coul'ave been worse. There's no guarantee we'da be able to come back this way on'our return trip. He migh'ave starved to death, an tha'd have been'a crueler fate. This was quick, and a mercy to be true. Mos'likely his own people would have done 'im in anyway for turnin' traitor. They are savage people, as a dwarf, I know." Turning toward Ai Shan, "Still, wish you'd given 'im a chance to tell us more."
Jul 21, 2015 6:40 am
"Thanks Ai, that squirmy lil sh*t just barely got away from me. Best death that gob could ask for, I think.
Jul 21, 2015 7:35 am
Fēng turns away from them all and begins to meditate. What his companions are saying are all true. He himself, as he had stopped Cassandra's killing blow, had never lost sight of the potential catastrophe if their captive were found by more of Shimazu's troops. But what of honor? Is there truly a place for honor in a cruel world? What if, honor-bound, he had spared the prisoner's life and the vile creature had then gone on to murder countless innocents? Truly, the hobgoblin deserved to die. Fēng only wished that had not been the manner of it. And yet...

The young monk continues pondering as he continues his meditation forms. It is a delay, but the monk has been taught that anger and other distracting thoughts hamper one in battle.
Fēng is refocusing his ki. This will take half an hour, a short rest. Feel free to interrupt him if your character feels it's a mistake to delay.

Cassandra is confused at what happened. Even on the pirate ship there was a pecking order, and she feels uncertain now as to who is the captain of this ship, if anyone. She sits on a rock, looking out into the bamboo for any signs of movement, waiting for someone to lead the party on.

The group sits in the bamboo as Fēng meditates. Cassandra keeps a close lookout but doesn't see any soldiers approaching during that time. She begins to think about how best to go up. Finding a direct route up the mountain is not difficult, just follow the road. Finding the stealthy path is. As you have found out, the mountain is protected from siege on all sides. A small band, keeping to the shadows, hiding against the ascending wall behind the fortifications may stand a chance at infiltration but not during the day, at least not moving mroe than a snail's pace. Ai Shan wants to move and Urki has taken a liking to the big man. Kildrak is sure of himself and that's enough for him and his silent silent partner for now. The question now is where to move and when? How best to get up to the top of the mountain.

If anyone is having trouble visiualizing the mountain, let me know.
Jul 23, 2015 4:33 am
((I admit I'm not sure exactly where we all. The goblin mentioned walls we could get over at night maybe. Kildrak was on board with that plan if we haven't completely ruined that option.
Jul 23, 2015 8:01 am
Fēng completes his meditation and returns to the group calm and focused. "My friends, I'm afraid that my initiating an impulsive attack on this battery has jeopardized our mission. Now that we know somewhat more about Shimazu's defense emplacements it confirms the wisdom of the plan I original put forward: flying to the summit under cover of darkness, bypassing all defenses and eliminating the risk of the alarm being raised prematurely. But now that we've slain these creatures the alarm WILL be raised as soon as their relief arrives. We know nothing of their routine and so we've no clue how much time we have until that happens. Here's what I propose: we lie here in wait for whatever relief comes and eliminate them when they arrive. We now know that captains must be relieved of their alarm horns. The moment darkness falls I fly you up to the top and we infiltrate Shimazu's keep. What say you?"
Jul 23, 2015 8:11 am
Urki reaches over to grab his chain mail and dons it. "I think that is a fine plan of action. Probably should clean up the scene so the next captain doesn't blow the horn before we spring our attack.

Urki gets his chain mail on and then the black cloak over top.

"Feng, if you get close to the next captain I think it best if you can use those fancy punches on his chest. It could knock the wind out of the gob and we'll hear barely a thing from him.
Jul 23, 2015 3:57 pm
"The hiccup in that plan is we do'na know where the dead cap'an was headed. Gobs is a disorganized lot generally, but this one seems ta be a cut above. If'n the captain is s'posed to make an end of watch report, kill in' the next group doesn'a give us much help. Plus who knows how of'en they switch. We may have a whole garisson piled up here before nightfall. I say we clean up here. Do our best to make it look like they deserted, then move up the mountain ta hide until night. We'll just hav'ta expec' a few more guards on duty than usual, someone's likely ta figure out the rouse. They'll send trackers. But small hunting parties we can handle."
Jul 23, 2015 4:54 pm
"If we need to sneak, mother nature can elp us get past those bastards. 'Cos them goblins on the road talked about a cliff, I could also ask er to elp one or two of you with climbin, if it come to that."

Cassandra has prepared Pass without Trace (+10 Dexterity [Stealth] for everyone) and Enhance Ability (advantage on chosen ability check for 1 or 2 people) Duration 1 hour in each case, though I can cast them both again.

"These are fine ideas, my friends!" Fēng exclaims. "We need not wait for darkness if we can slip by these defenders."
Jul 23, 2015 9:07 pm
"We can try to clean up but my blade made quite a mess of it. Leave the artillery and watch for them to send a relief crew or search party. These lot are weak, but organized. Watch and wait for nightfall then lets look for a way to sneak up. If the moon and stars are with us we can keep to the shadows and get past most of their fortifications without drawing too much attention."
Jul 24, 2015 5:52 pm
The party begins the task of cleaning the scene the best they can. By pulling bodies into the tall grass you clear the scene of any major objects that could be seen from a distance. Ai Shan is correct though, in some places the grass is stained with the brackish blood of the hobgoblins.

Do you travel now or at nightfall?
Jul 25, 2015 4:10 pm
Cassandra looks at the faces of each of her companions. No one is offering the leadership she finds so comforting, but their body language tells her most of them at least want to move on, which as a seafarer she understands only too well.

"Come on everyone, let's get a move on before more of these f*ers arrive. I'll keep me ears and eyes open, and if need be Mother Nature will 'ide us. Let's go slow though and stay close, we're walkin' into a shoal of sharks 'ere."

Cassandra moves away from the position slowly, up the steep slope through the woods, assuming her companions will come with her.

I suggest we travel at a slow pace so that we can use Stealth. Cassandra will have Pass Without Trace ready, and at the first sign of danger will cast it. Relying on passive perception 17 - the hobgoblins at least are probably not being stealthy on their own mountain. From the discussion on the ooc thread, I take it we're travelling now, but not directly approaching the fortress until night time.

The group moves as one through the limited cover ascending the mountain. Cassandra leads the way and Ai Shan leads the group behind her. As she leads, Cassandra spots a patrol of Hobgoblins and motions for everyone to stop. They pass and she waves the group forward again. Ai Shan pads forward silently and helps the group find paths that won't leave evidence of their passing. The ascent looms in front of you, full of nooks and crannies for you to scurry to but should you be seen or tracked, you will be forced into conflict.

The skill challenge has begun including the two stealth rolls. More in arbitration.

As the group progresses up the mountain, Kildrak begins to worry that thaley aren't being as stealthy as they need to be. He suggests trying to lay a false trail. When he finds what he thinks is a opportune place he suggests they lay down a trail headed in the wrong direction and double back.

I hope someone else can roll Survival, Kildrak may have had a poor upbringing , but it was pretty urban, not one in the wild.

The party moves with preternatural stealth as they climb higher and higher up the mountain. You can see now that the forest is beginning to clear away and the climb is becoming more hardscrabble. The patrols near the midpoint up the mountain become less and less and it has been at least four hours since you left the mangonel when you can hear a clarion call from where you started. You can observe in the hobgoblin patrols you can see an alert course through them and their eyes narrow as patrols redouble below you investigating the scene you left behind.

Here without the cover of trees, darkness will be your only friend but the sun is only just starting its journey down to the horizon. Ai Shan and Feng however have been watching the patrols carefully and are able to instruct the party on when is best to move. The ascent begins to be steeply graded and most of you have to use your hands to help climb up the mountain as you dart from spot to spot to avoid the watchful eyes of the patrols. Above you, and a decent journey away, you can see the final landing before the straight vertical ascent to reach the palace. If infiltration is your goal, then that is your destination and the best place to rest before the final push.

Ai Shan and Feng can give advantage to stealth on this round.

The group begins to wind and wend it's way to the landing. Urki teaches the party with some success how to leave less tracks while also laying down some false trails of his own. Meanwhile, Ai Shan guides the party on routes with the most cover, what little of it there is, keeping them from the prying eyes of random patrols. Just as he is about to sprint out and make for the next point, Cassandra touches his shoulder and points off to the left where a group of hobgoblins a smoking a pipe in the dusk. If not for the cherry of their smoking, they would have been hard to spot. The party waits them out and then moves as one when ideal. They reach the base of the landing. From here, the ascent is near vertical. Once they reach the landing though, they will be beyond the notice of the guards below and directly underneath the shoin-zukuri mansion above. Kildrak moves to fasten some pitons and being climbing but falls back to the party when a handhold crumbles to his weight.

Using teamwork, you all scramble up the surface of cliffface to the landing. You pay no particular mind to covering your tracks here as you can see the torches of the hobgoblin patrols far down the mountain far from the path you journeyed to get here. Once Feng secures the rope, the party finds it easier to get up the steep cliff and gets to the top mostly without incident. As Kildrak climbed though, he lost his footing to some loose stone and ripped his cloak when it caught on some rocks during his recovery, leaving a small strip flapping in the wind.

As you all stand here at the base of the final ascent, you wonder whether this would be a good time for rest or whether you want to push on for the night. The sun has finally settled and the moon has already risen into the sky. It is bright enough to use it for climbing but many of you are winded from the journey to this point. You could push on at the risk of exhaustion.

"I don't know about the rest of you lot, but I'm getting a rest and a bite. Press on at dawn or wait here is the question."

Ai Shan pulls out some hard tack and starts chewing, his back to the cliff wall. Eyes closed.

"I agree, lets get some grub and wait for morning. Do you all want to sneak in? Fight in? I'm a little nervous about what we may find?"
Aug 9, 2015 6:01 pm
Before climbing the, Cassandra fixes her horse's bridle to a rocky outcrop along the edge of the cliff base, and repacks her sleeping roll and some rations into her backpack. Once she gets up to the landing, unrolls her sleeping mat along the foot of the final ascent, sits on it and begins tucking into her rations. "Sleep sounds like a f-in good idea. When do these 'obgoblins sleep anyway?"

Forgot about the horse there, but I suppose it couldn't have climbed the last cliff, so this post tries to make sense of that, with a little retconning.

"Aye, some rest migh' be good. But we're exposed up 'ere. We need to move before first light, I think."
Aug 11, 2015 5:44 pm
You all begin to nestle in and watch the show below as you prepare camp. The hobgoblin's torches zig and zag across the base of the mountain. You watch as the torches descend the mountain into the village below and it is too hard to make out but you can here distant cries from below. Only one hut is set aflame though and before long the hobgoblins move on into the forest, leaving an eerily silent sobbing in their wake.

It's not smart to light a fire up here so it'll be cold rations and tight jackets as the wind picks up here nearer to the top. You all feel that while you are mostly hidden from eyes coming from below, you would be easily spotted by anyone from above so you move your bedrolls as far from the edge as possible and get ready for bed. Feng finds a higher roost.

Cassandra lets Kildrak sleep. To Feng she says, "They're headed straight for this mountain. By my reckonin they'll be on us two hours after my watch is over. I'm blown if we don't need to get up this 'ere cliff before sunrise."

Cassandra decides to wake the rest of her companions two hours before the end of her watch (which I'm assuming is 4 hours long?), to give us time to climb the face before the crows get too close and before dawn.

Urki and Fēng, you both remember different things but together they begin to form a picture. Urki, while you have never seen these crow riders, you have heard stories of the Grigoran forces swooping in on their black birds to detain and capture enemies of the state. Mostly they are told as campfire tales for surely the Archmage Grigori would not stoop to such tactics now that he is the one true Archmage of the Council. Fēng, your intuitions tell you something else. To you, the flight of birds is first nature. The flight path of these birds, and their riders included, are on a direct course for your landing. If they meant to fly around they would have changed direction by now. There is no way they could see you through normal means, yet it would appear they are flying straight for you and your group. The only other thing in this direction would be the keep that is high above you but if they were heading for that, they would surely be higher in the sky.

The sun is still resting below the horizon but it won't be too long before it will be up.

All of you would know of the Archmage Grigori. It was a world event when the dwarven archmage that lived under the mountain consolidated the power of the council and took the Archmage Martin prisoner. His dwarven mages follow his style of heavy armor spellcasting focusing on Abjuration magicks.

"Unlikely as it seems, there is the possibility they are here to aid us. Or on business of their own. If the Council of Magi is sending envoys to Shimazu then it can't be good. We should learn more." Fēng says the last with a bit of pride; he has learned his lessons well. All he knows of world politics is from lessons, not from any real world experience.

The monk turns to the druid, "Cassandra, if we must fight them I want you and I to attempt to gain the loyalty of their crow mounts. I don't know how strong a bond those riders have with them but we must try. The climb is a near vertical ascent of over five hundred feet. Fēng, you will have to stagger the rope and grapples and the team will have to decide on a climbing order. You have at least five 50ft ropes so that you could cover 250ft in a single file climb or 100ft in a double file climb. The climb will be considered difficult terrain even with the rope. As Fēng finishes hanging the rope, either single or double (or even triple or quadruple file if he wanted), he looks out to the approaching crows with his spyglass that he took from the slain hobgoblin.

He snaps his wings open just in time to come to a well-practiced hard landing directly in front of Cassandra. "Quickly!" He hisses urgently to his companions, struggling not to yell for fear of their hobgoblin pursuers. "Spirits forgive me, I wasted too much of our time already by hiding in the rocks. Now make haste! One of Grihori's mages, and a knight of the same order. They will be upon us sooner than you think! I will carry Cassandra. The rest of you, CLIMB NOW!" Fēng grabs the druid and tries to hoist her up but makes little headway. He drops his pack to the ground and struggles to catch more air with great sweeps of his wings. Fēng sets Cassandra down in a safe spot at the top of the cliff, and immediately dives back down for Urki, who is on the short rope. Gasping for breath, arms and wings aching, the young monk struggles up to the top with his burden. He sets the gnome down and pauses a moment before heading back down. He goes straight for his pack lying in the dust. Flying up to Ai Shan and Kildrak he says, "Forgive me, friends, I can carry no more." Fēng moves on, taking the now vacant short rope and securing it above Ai Shan's line. Back at the top, he leaves his pack with Urki before turning to peer at the crow riders again through the spyglass

Fēng realizes that he has been struggling because he has lost focus. He has been fighting the wind instead of bending with it. He brings his breathing under control and regathers his energy to sublimate the weariness from his muscles. But he is tired, so tired.

Master Shou's words echo in his head, "If you know the art of breathing you have the strength, wisdom, and courage of ten tigers." Feng wonders sourly if Master Shou has ever had to turn himself into a sky ferry!

Ai Shan and Kildrak make their ways up the ropes. Fēng uses the moment to look through his spyglass as Cassandra and Urki cling to the narrow ledge with the wall to their backs. The sun is still not up and the crows approach from the mountain's rear, similar to your own vantage. The hobgoblins were also out all night searching for intruders that were not there. While some are still watching, most have gone back to sleep. The fact that Grigori's power is well known may be the reasons that if any hobgoblins have spotted them, they have refrained from action yet.

Cassandra sees the courtyard below, a single figure kneeling in front of an urn, deep in thought, praying. The figure wears black ō-yoroi with scarlet red embellishments in the shape of small coals. You can tell that the samurai is probably engaging in some sort of ancestor worship as it kneels on a raised platform with what looks to be a funerary urn. Fēng moves silently, planting the grappling hooks without noise and looks down at the samurai just as Ai Shan jumps over the wall, touching a hand on the top as his legs sweep over, javelin ready in the other hand.

Sorry, I misunderstood. The place that the urn sits is one block that is 5' by 5'. The area taken up by the samurai is the small thrust north of the urn. That thrust is also a 5' square (1x1). There is a five foot gap between the edge of the wall and the thrust. The wall counts as a place to stand but counts as difficult terrain unless you have a reason why it wouldn't be. The entire shrine is 20' by 20' (4x4). The large section on the attached balcony south west of the shrine is 3x3. The stairs into the mansion directly south of the shrine are 2x2. You can see the building southwest of the shrine has traditional paper walls.

Before Fēng could stop them, his three companions have descended on the unsuspecting warrior in the garden. The young monk finds it dishonorable to attack someone while at meditation, but he has seen enough of the world by now to know that many do not share such compunctions. Feng had hoped to achieve their goal without needless fighting but perhaps that was naive of him. He watches the bsttle intently. He has faith in his companions' abilities but should the lone warrior prove a challenge Feng is prepared to intervene. He also keeps a lookout for other threats.

The party vaults over the wall wasting no time. The samurai sits seiza in front of the urn. The winds whispers a smoky breeze through the leaves of the plants just south of your assault, its voice forgotten as your battlenoise begins it's cadence. The barbarian swings his sword twice, connecting with the first. The samurai is thrown all the way to the ground with the first strike and the warrior rolls from under the crushing fists of the the druid's ape form. Cassandra is too pensive, holding back her strikes. The samurai begins to rise, hands going for the daishō tucked into their belt as a bolt tears into their shoulder and an eldritch blast flies over their head. They look over at the Monk trying to hide as their eyes narrow. You can see now the eyes that faced away glow red but look dead sunken into the desicated skin of the vaguely hobgoblin face. The leathery skin is pale and female lips curl back into a sneer. A mempo hangs from a single string and as the darkly armored samurai grabs it and affixes it the rest of the way, hiding the sneer. You hear from underneath the mask, "I knew you dogs would lack honor. Expect no mercy." She, in a bound, leaps back, drawing her swords, unafraid of any attacks from those gathered around her. "You cowards will not die with dignity," you hear as she withdraws, retreating upto the balcony and into the house to the south.

Kildrak Eldritch Blast - (1d20)

Fēng hesitates. To allow the fleeing samurai respite and a chance to gather her strength would be folly, but to charge after her blindly with other foes at their backs would be suicide. He peers over the wall to check on the crow riders' progress.
OOC: I'm hoping the spyglass gives him advantage, which would cancel out the disadvantage imposed by exhaustion. I've included a 2nd roll in case I'm wrong about this.

I let her leave my sight. I turn to Feng.

"Got a problem with hittin monk? I'm not even sure that thing was... alive? Ran off with my bolt though. err."
Oct 13, 2015 7:54 am
Looking at Feng and Urki, Cassandra senses their mood of caution and disobeys her bestial instinct to run after the fleeing monstrosity.

Her ape eyes narrow as she observes where exactly the Samurai has gone, and what options the party might have for pursuit or evasion.

The dwarves are still about a quarter hour and closing fast. Kildrak jumps down from the wall and looks to the samurai. "Are we jus gonna let that one go?" His hands burn with eldritch energies and his eyes look to the group. "We 'aven't the time to molly coddle these beasties with those mooks flying sidesaddle behind us!"

Anyone who was within melee range of the Samurai could (and still can, retroactively) have taken an opportunity attack since she double moved and did not disengage.

The sunken eyed samurai retreats into the large building just south of the team's position. Two crow riders push on the position from the northwest. Ai Shan, Cassandra in ape form, and Kildrak all rush forward into the room to engage the warrior.

Fēng and Urki both are about to rush in too when they hear something that makes them pause. You turn to the left and see two warriors hanging from a rafter above a raised platform. They are tied with honnawa and bound with intricate knots. The rope from the rafters meets the captives at where their hands are tied behind their backs at the waist. They are still dressed in armor and travel clothes but their weapons have been stripped from them and lean against the platform.

A cracked voice calls out "Wait . . ." and it is obvious that these warriors, whoever they are, are conscious though badly beaten.
Apr 24, 2016 10:14 am
Urki resets his crossbow.

"Uhh, can I help you? We're kind of busy?"
Apr 24, 2016 1:28 pm
Swooping in beside Urki, Fēng hesitates and wonders if it would be wise to cut these captives down. Who knows, they might be able to help? On the other hand, what do they know about these two? They could be innocents, or they could be mercenaries in Shimazu's employ, being punished for some failure or other.

"Come, Urki. The others are already inside. We cannot allow that samurai to sound the alarm!" The young aarakocra monk begins to move off.
Apr 24, 2016 2:03 pm
Nakada and Tonton, it has been a long journey to this point. Earlier near the beginning of the evening, you had just entered into the town of the goblins near the base of the hill and had garnered some hospitality when the hobgoblins began to storm the place. Whether you hid or you fought, you were found and overpowered by the sheer numbers of torch bearing hobgoblins. They bound you, four hobgoblins apiece, and "questioned" you as to why you were on the mountain though you remember the frequency of questions to be less and less as the night went on. When your answers finally were to the satisfaction of the hobgoblin in charge, they carried you up the mountain pass and into the lair of Shimazu. The Widow could tell there was something different about you and offered to Shimazu to continue the interogation as it would, "give her some fun for the coming winter" in her words. Though the night dragged on, you were afforded a moment to rest, a least a little, before the sun's cherry glow began to warm the horizon. You watched as the Widow began to pray in this courtyard to the urn on a pedastal when she was attacked. You thought to yourselves, All part of the plan.
Apr 24, 2016 4:02 pm
"Cut us down," says the wood elf in traveling clothes, swinging lightly to rotate and eye the attackers. "Can help." His voice is parched.
Apr 24, 2016 7:25 pm
Something about the elf makes Fēng stop. Mercenary or innocent, surely this creature has suffered enough. Master Aeyesu had always taught, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." The aarakocra monk hurriedly reaches up and cuts the elf's bonds with the blade of his spear. Then he offers the elf a sip from his own waterskin.
Apr 25, 2016 5:21 pm
The wood elf pushes aside the waterskin and retrieves his blade from where it rests against the platform. He proceeds to cut down the other individual as quickly as he can, though he pauses on occasion to shake some feeling back into his limbs.
Apr 25, 2016 8:22 pm
Utamuro drags himself to his feet and bows to Feng, "Thank you for your assistance. What's happening here?" he says, trying to get his head back on straight.
Apr 25, 2016 10:17 pm
"Feng... What are we doing with these two? They sure as hell don't look like they are part of Shimazu's club.

Urki turns to the two freshly freed captives.

"Can you guys help us or will you flee? Either is fine with me but we need to make a decision quick. If you're injured I can heal everyone up with a prayer but it takes a few minutes."
Apr 25, 2016 11:42 pm
Nakada and Yotsuba, you are both at half health rounded up. You understand the basics of the mission as you were most likely sent from the ouroboros guild as well unless you have another reason to be here. I will start the other thread, "The Adventures of Utamuro and Tonton" presently but for the time being you should assume working knowledge of who Shimazu is and if not who the Widow is, at least what she is which is an undead samurai that protects the family's interests.
Apr 26, 2016 2:11 pm
"We can fight, but some healing first would be much appreciated. My name is Nakada Utamuro."
Apr 26, 2016 4:02 pm
Feng bows to the two warriors. The young monk has little skill with healing, but he helps bandage up any obvious wounds. He also takes this time to meditate and catch his own breath. Hauling his friends up the cliff face took a real toll on him*. Speaking of which, he wonders how Ai Shan, Cassandra, and Kildrak are faring. So far, no alarm has been raised. That may be a good sign.

And then there are the crow riders. To Feng's knowledge, they still approach. They must make haste.
OOC:
*Feng is still at level 2 exhaustion.

Tonton does not give an introduction, busy with retrieving the weapons and equipment for Utamuro. With both hands, he holds out a katana for the samurai, head bowed.

Tonton gives a silent nod to the gnome as he retrieves the rest of the equipment. The wood elf then looks at Utamuro, and with an unspoken agreement draws a wakizashi short sword and slips into the house in pursuit of their quarry.

The four of you creep toward the manse, vigilantly watching for any signs of the battle that should be happening within. You see no combatants, you hear no sounds of battle. As you take cautious steps towards the main room, the sliding shoji doors of which are open, you can see the signs of struggle. You can tell that this room is a reception hall, lavishly decorated with coffered ceiling tiles, silk partitions decorated with battle scenes, and woven straw tatami mats that cover the floor. A low table at the center of the room has been broken and lilts to one side, cushions are strewn about, a silk screen has a large slash through the center. There is an opening to an alcove on the other side of the room and a set of fusuma doors along the center of the right hand wall that are closed. It is all but silent as you approach but as Utamuro moves to the steps, he places his foot on a warped board and a large creak is heard.

You are on the room to the right. Those things that look like mats are actually rooms.
Apr 30, 2016 12:29 am

Sliding fusuma doors lead into the next area along the western wall. Urki indicates that the person is waiting directly on the other side. Urki can tell that they are making very little noise, as even the scroll unfurling is measured and slow to hide its noise. If it wasn't for his trained ear, he probably would not have heard anything at all. Tonton pads silently towards the west of the room.
May 3, 2016 11:27 pm
Tonton turns his grip on his wakizashi. He slides open the door and lunges through in the direction of the scroll reader, intent on spearing whom he believes is the undead samurai on the other side with all his weight behind the thrust. Already he is planning his next move to disappear after the initial strike.

May 6, 2016 1:18 am
Seeing that combat is joined, Utamuro steps out from behind the door. He takes on a battle stance, feet wide, one hand resting on the hilt of his katana.
May 6, 2016 1:20 am
Once everyone has taken a combat turn, the Widow will take theirs. She is presently dodging.
May 6, 2016 1:24 am
Utamuro rushes forward, drawing his katana and launching a powerful diagonal attack. He then adjusts his grip and swings down in an overhead chop.
OOC:
DC 15:

1st is a trip attack: When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one superiority die to attempt to knock the target down. You add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll, and if the target is Large or smaller, it must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, you knock the target prone.

2nd attack will be a goading strike:
When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one superiority die to attempt to goad the target into attacking you. You add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll, and the target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target has disadvantage on all attack rolls against targets other than you until the end of your next turn.

If he fails the first save, then my second attack will be a regular attack (no disadvantage). Add 6 damage to the first strike and 8 damage to the second if they hit.

Feng swoops in after Tonton and Utamuro. There is hardly room here for the sweeping strikes favored by the Kuang Fong ("wild wind") style but the Golden Talon monks certainly did not lack for training in other fighting styles. Feng leads with his spear, jabbing repeatedly in a deadly blur. Then, planting the butt of his spear in the tatami floor and using it as a pivot, he lashes out with taloned kicks to the Widow's face: Hungry Crane Assault
OOC:
*Two spear attacks (two-handed) against the Widow: spending one ki for a Stunning Strike, and another one if she makes her CON save (DC 14) against the first. Another ki for Flurry of Blows. If any of the flurries hit she must save (DEX, DC 14) or be knocked prone (Open Talon Technique).

Tonton uses the swirling combat to dance in and out of melee, thrusting once for a gap in the Widow's armor before attempting to slip back behind the other warriors.
OOC:
I'd like to use Cunning Action to Hide. I think typically hiding after combat has started doesn't work, but perhaps with three other people surrounding one target, Tonton can count as Hiding for advantage on his next attack? If he can't, then ignore the Hide roll and he'll remain in melee range.

Fēng's strikes land precisely on pressure points that have stopped foes dead in their tracks, piercing vulnerablities in the Widow's armor but his spear slashes at deadened nerves. The samurai deftly backs just out of reach of the flying talons.

Urki runs forward to touch her but she easily side steps him, pivoting on her lead foot in a wide arc, watching as the gnome rushes past her just enough to let Tonton sneak his blade into her neck. A spurt of black unguent blood sprays forth from the wound and a hand quickly shoots up to cover the leak.

The widow holds her sword out, slowly inching her pivot foot out, widening her stance. You hear her utter a command word, "Seichō shimasu." The sword in her hands grows almost double it's length and you see her adjust her grip to a strong two handed grip. She swings at Feng twice. "Your kind is my favorite type of child. With a gurgle of blackened ichor spewing from the corner of her mouth, the Widow sneers. Under to move her body she cloaks out with all her effort, "Vengeance . . . will . . . be . . .mine . . . on all of you!" She forces the last out with the remaining breath in her lungs and the burning coals of her eyes dim to darkness. You can hear muffled sounds coming from the room next door.
Jun 14, 2016 3:53 pm
Tonton kneels next to the Widow's body, tilts her head back, and begins to carve it off at the neck. Though Shimazu is the primary target, felling the Widow ought to impress their employers.

Feng turns away from the trophy collection with distaste. But there isn't time to worry about that right now. He steadies his breathing and focuses his ki, preparing for whatever may be in the next room.

Tonton hacks off the gruesome trophy and sticks it in a satchel. Fēng slowly pushes open the door to the inner room.

A group of goblin children, none older than 6 years old, almost an adolescent for goblins, lay bound and gagged. Tonton and Utamuro remember others taken when they were questioned but not as many as are here. Ten goblin children are in the room in varying states of starvation. Three look fed but recently bloodied.
Jun 24, 2016 7:14 pm
Slowly, unsurely, and eventually nine sets of eyes look at Fēng, some retreating on contact. Varied emotions flash across their faces ranging from abject terror to relief. The tenth lays in darkness in the corner and doesn't move whatsoever.

Tonton gets a quick lay of the land, searching the rooms of the building. He finds doors leading out to the east and south through the outside hallways. One room seems to be the Widow's room, another a fastidious study with calligraphy haikus written in goblin pictograms. There is also a small kitchen where you can see a soup on to boil. While you are doing your sweep, you hear something in the great room. When you go to see what it is, you notice it is coming from the bonsai tree.

Shimazu does not allow his farmers to speak anything but Goblin. The one you ungag begins to speak haltingly in Goblin. These children and their conditions definitely tell a story though. As Fēng moves through the children, he only makes a child scream as he accidentally squeezes a bruised arm. The scream is muffled a bit by the gag but it could have been heard by someone close. As Fēng tends to the children clumsily, he notices the tenth child is missing his arms and legs to the shoulders and knees.

Tonton himself does understand Goblin. However, his attention is now on the bonsai plant as he sources the sound from the great room.

Tonton follows his ears right to the plant and looks to where they have led him. There, in the bonsai tree house, three miniature adventurers look up at him. Tonton can recognize them as the three that ran in to fight the Widow while the others untied him. They look relieved as they finally have gotten your attention. They are tiny and you can see evidence of others now that you are looking. There is a small community within the tree of others that were similarly tricked, no doubt.
Jul 7, 2016 2:44 am
Tonton takes a step backward, and shakes his head of the vision. No, it's true, something is in there.

"Your friends! Here!" calls out the rogue, bringing the bonsai's attention to the others.
Jul 7, 2016 1:22 pm
Fēng hears Tonton calling and rushes over. He gasps when he sees the bonsai and the people there. "Urki! We've found Kildrak, Cassandra, and Ai Shan! And others, besides."
Jul 7, 2016 4:47 pm
Tonton backs away from the plant, now that the aarakocra has positively identified the other companions. This development was very unexpected, and somewhat disconcerting. What other magics does Shimazu possess? Time to scout more of the grounds.

The wood elf nods to Feng and leaves the bonsai in his capable hands, while he continues his search through the house.
Jul 11, 2016 5:44 pm
Fēng peers at the tiny people. "Friends, can you hear me?" he whispers.
Jul 12, 2016 4:34 pm
Big movements of agreement, exaggerated nods from Shan and Kildrak and a big thumbs up from Cassandra, confirm that they can hear Fēng. They confer for a moment and start making exaggerated movements with their arms clasping them together and swinging them from over their head and bringing them down in front of them or out to the side.

Tonton as you resume your search of the building you can hear the voice of the goblin child pleading with Utamuro.

Jul 12, 2016 5:44 pm
Utamuro steps away from the child, patting it gently on the head to show he's a good guy before drawing his katana back out and assisting Tonton with dismembering the corpse. "We can have this... thing... consecrated later, after we're done with our job here."
Jul 12, 2016 5:53 pm
Tonton tips his head over to the goblins, even as he strikes down at the Widow's wrist. "They say she comes back, and consumes them. If she is the type of undead that can reform even when dismembered, we may want to take care of this sooner before she rises at our backs."

Tonton stops his dismemberment of the body and readies his blade. "The goblins say that she reappears over her old body," he reports, quickly. "Perhaps consecration is not enough. The bonsai cradled in one arm, Feng brings up the rear, herding any stragglers.
Aug 19, 2016 9:24 pm
Visibility is low and breathing difficult as the heroes duck to improve either. The children follow Utamuro as Tonton leads the way. Feng pulls up the rear where a small goblin girl has started crying and refuses to move. Feng stops to push her along as a burning rafter falls behind him. The three heroes and ten children finally push their way into the clean air to the north of the small manse. As they suck in fresh air, they have a moment to notice that the Widow is not there but that two others are.

You can see two large crows, each with saddle and rider, landing in the courtyard to the north. The riders are Dwarves and they wear plate mail. The two crow riders could not be more different. Both wear plate armor but one is clearly a wizard. He holds a crystal ball in one hand and an old worn pick-ax in the other. He seems lost in thought and his eyes glow with arcane magicks. The other bears the insignia of Grigori's knights on their full helm, usually sent with the wizards as an added layer of safety. Grigori was known for protecting his investments.

They dismount and the knight looks toward you, drawing a two handed war pick from a leather thong but not advancing as you can see through the eye slit of their helm, a puzzled look. The knight stands defensively and ready to engage should you move toward them.

As you cough and sputter in the night breeze, the wizard speaks in a deep voice, enhanced by magicks, "We seek the one known as -"

Before he has a chance to finish though, he is interrupted by a fearsome bellow. Everyone is startled from the moment and look to the West where, jumping down from the wraparound patio, a hobgoblin woman with red glowing eyes and a flaming sword lands. Wearing only a pair of hakama, her upper body tightly wrapped in cloth, the Widow pauses in her vengeance. She looks to the dwarves with her eyes ablaze.

Tonton runs along the undulating shadows, reaching the edge of the roof. Jumping he lashes out with a well aimed slice, gashing an oozing wound in the undead corpse snatcher. Using superior footwork, he ducks a quick fiery counterstrike as he scurries out of reach.

Fēng looks at the tree and then back to the fire. Visualizing the smoking ruins he thinks back to the basics of his training, "Swift as the wind. Quiet as the forest. Conquer like the fire. Steady as the mountain." his Master's voice rings in his ears. He closes his eyes and flys by his intuition into the fire,. He sees the fallen timbers and can hear the crackling blaze, using the heat to save wing strokes. Curving around hallways and alighting over burning brand, he gets to the sword, holding his breath against the smoke. He looks down and can see the sword with a beam atop it. You can feel your weariness flow through you knowing what strength it would take to pry it out before it got too hot.

Utamuro dashes forward in a low aggressive stance. His blade counter swings high before coming crashing down on the Widow's unprotected knees. Though it catches her squarely in the joint, she squarely catches the blade in her joints, leaning into the strike to avoid falling over. As she is wearing no armor, Utamuro finds no difficulty twisting the blade from the knee, further opening the wound as he steps into the lunge to add leverage.

Feng, I took your first roll since you used your spear to apply leverage and had it negate the disadvantage from being exhausted. Utamuro, on your turn, I'll need your first death saving throw. If you are healed before then, you will be able to join the fight again. You are presently at 0 hit points.

Seeing his master fall, Tonton finds the will to move again. He sprints up to the Widow, sword raised in a reverse-grip. At the very last minute, the elf slides past the Widow to his knees and plants the tip of his blade into the ground to act as an anchor, coming to a stop by Utamuro's body. In a fluid motion, Tonton pours a healing potion through his master's lips while shielding him from any blow.

Rolls

Healing Potion for Utamuro - (2d4+2)

(22) + 2 = 6

Oct 25, 2016 2:36 pm
Utamuro coughs and sputters for a moment before opening his eyes. Seeing the Widow still standing before him, he leaps to his feet, katana at the ready. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he resumes his fighting stance and begins slashing at the monster, hoping to bring her down.
OOC:
Second Wind to heal as a bonus action

If I hit I will use Trip Attack (DC 15 Strength Save): When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one superiority die to attempt to knock the target down. You add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll, and if the target is Large or smaller, it must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, you knock the target prone

If she fails the save, she will fall prone (but she'll take the extra damage either way) and I'll have advantage on any further attacks

EDIT: Pretty sure both hit :) 16 damage on attack one, 14 damage on attack two

Instead of weaving his way back through the burning house, can Feng just fly straight up? Is anything blocking his way?
Oct 25, 2016 6:36 pm
The ceiling is weak but no holes. You would take some damage to fly through the roof but it's possible. I'd call it 3d6 if that's what you wanted to do.
Oct 25, 2016 7:20 pm
OOC:
At 13hp and exhausted it's too risky. I'll go back the way I came in.
Oct 26, 2016 3:21 am
That should take your move action. Did you want to do anything else?
Oct 29, 2016 6:24 pm
Feng reemerges from the burning house and tosses the sword to Utamuro "The Widow's sword." the monk hisses. "Use it! 'Seichō shimasu' is the command phrase!"
OOC:
Can I attack on top of that? Including attack rolls just in case. Also, if Utamuro's Trip attack was successful then Fengs' attacks would have advantage.

Tonton surprises the Widow with his trick and she watches as he heals his master enough for the Samurai to stand against her once more. Utamuro strikes without fail but the Widow is too strong to fall. As the other attacks come in, she raises her arm, absorbing the third hit that would have otherwise have landed squarely on the nape of her neck. However, Utamuro can feel his blade scrape bone, and as she retracts her blocking arm, the party can clearly see a trail of black blood streaming from her wound. Just when the onslaught is finished, Feng flies out of the burning house, trails of smoke and embers streaming behind him as he shouts to Utamuro and launches his talons into the Widow. Three more quick hits drive into her and she falls to one knee, trying to block the hits but failing.

Utamuro strikes for 30hp worth of damage and Feng follows up with 26hp worth. You all have done 132 points of damage to the widow.
Nov 22, 2016 5:37 am
But...it is just barely not enough.

The Widow, kneeling, begins to make a hoarse sound, almost as if her lungs have collapse and she is trying to heave one of them up in a coughing fit. It takes you all just a moment too long to realize that she is laughing, aided in that deduction by the smile that creeps on to her face. You glimpse it as she turns her head askance and brings her eyes up to the three adventurers. Strike me down, but I will rise. I will hunt you and I will hunt your children. I will hunt your generations backwards and forwards until you are not even a memory in the pages of history! With the last threat, she jumps up with her sword and strikes at Utamuro and Feng hoping to bring them both low for their combined savagery.

The Widow renegerates 10hp and then strikes out with her Flame Brand.

The Widow's fiery sword cuts through the defenses of her foes. A freshly cauterized wound strikes Utamuro across the chest. Tonton watches as his master falls for a second time. The collapse of his master is followed by that of the monk as the Widow flicks her blade into his gut, turning her body to catch him full in the stomach. Tonton watches as the light begins to fade from his eyes. The Widow turns to the Ninja, her face locked in a maniacal grin as the laughter continues to wrench itself out of her body in phlegmy waves.

Heroes turn. The Widow is barely clinging to life . . . and perhaps her sanity.
Nov 22, 2016 6:50 am
Lacking any other recourse, Tonton picks up the blade thrown by Fēng and readies it. "Seichō shimasu," he intones, and lashes out with the sword. Fearing retaliation, he reacts to dodge the Widow's counterattack.
OOC:
Does the command word make it into a greatsword? If so, I am not proficient in it.

If the Widow retaliates, I'm using Uncanny Dodge.
