1 - The missing villagers of Tar

Jun 4, 2018 3:02 pm
The village of Tar is no spectacular thing. It sits comfortably on the Goddess Tears River with nice little stone-and-wood houses, a small bridge, a three rooms inn for traveling messengers and barely sixty souls. There is nothing but rocky cliffs in sight to the east and lifeless expenses to the west. It takes half a day to walk up the valley and then you can see it: the Spinecord Mountain Range, so massive that no one would even try to go over it. Stories from the old times talk about dwarven cities that carved the mountains to find and exploit ore veins that only them knew how to find. But those are stories, and no one alive have seen or heard of such cities being anything else than folktales: the region is poor and lives from stone cutting used to build marvelous places that none of them will ever see. And that’s fine. At least, they have the peace and calm of almost untamed nature.

https://i.imgur.com/rsbFKo7.jpg

Until two days ago. Because that is what you’ve heard about the place. But when you arrived in Tar the villagers were in such panic that you thought that was on ongoing attack of some kind. You got some information out of your investigation.
Something happened as the sun was barely set and daylight fell. People were attacked in their house and taken. Eight of them were missing, five kids and three adults. The only person who saw and chased the raiders was killed, and his last words were:
"Walking nightmares… Find them before they settle... this land is doomed if they do."
Two houses were attacked, the doors busted outward, every human taken and the only tamed wolf had his head… well, teared off or devoured. Whatever. The screams woke the neighbours that searched in the dark to discover the agonizing man.
He had three deep wounds that looked like they had been caused by some kind of war pike: straight, deep, not too large and "clean" cuts. He also had one of its legs broken. The poor man bled out alone in the night with his wife and two kids taken what who knows what…
Those of you who were in the village have been hired by the Old Lady to follow whatever lead was left, discover the raiders hideout and bring the captured people home. During this time, she will gather as much as she can for payment, with an assured minimum of her personal saving: 119 Gold Pieces and a gem necklace worth 20 or 25.
Jun 4, 2018 3:03 pm
You tracked the raiders for almost two days, going north most of the time. Despite the difficulty to spot and follow the trail, the raiders seem to make no effort to erase their… steps? You don’t know exactly what you were tracking, but it had some kind of fingered paws or claws. Maybe some tamed animal judging by the strange nature of other marks. Some passages were so hard to cross that you wondered how anyone sane would choose to go that way, but at least they didn’t seem concerned by the trail they were leaving behind them.
You lost the track again in the lower part of the mountain, as the ground became more stone than earth. And as you were trying to find them back, one of you spotted three damaged but clearly landscaped openings at the base of the mountain.

You are facing the legendary mountains and just discovered the entrance of a place that isn't mentioned on your map. The wide but somewhat hidden path that leads to the entrance is cluttered with rocks, probably unhooked from the side of the mountain. The biggest of them are twice your size. The sun has already far exceeded its zenith, but you still have a few hours before the light begins to fall.

What do you do?
Jun 4, 2018 10:02 pm
OOC:
Would it be possible for Mih to attempt to analyze the tracks? Not for the "name" of what they were tracking, but at least some descriptors like approximate physical descriptors. Since it was several days - they should've left plenty of tracks, maybe even some fur? :D
Also the tracking party must've found raider's camping spot(s?) while pursuing, so there might've been some clues as well.

And if anyone is assisting Mih at that - would be nice :)
Jun 5, 2018 9:11 am
OOC:
Edit: Getting information from the tracks as you follow them is a passive thing Kuroi actually pointed out that it is an active use, which is very true: it is indeed part of the result roll. Here, as it happened off-screen in the introduction pitch, I used the average result. In the following message, I then took the max result (24) and gave all the appropriate information. Because why not? :)
Regarding passive skills, the rest remains true : I will automatically give you any information your character would normally get. With a DC, of course! I'll detail the passive score in the rules thread because the basic rules are somewhat poor in that regard : basically, it's 8 + mod + prof.
From the two days you spent tracking them, you got some information about the raiders. First, there was two kind of them : those with apparently normal feet and those that seems to be walking on what looks like large bony hands. Your party mate Jacques pointed out that they certainly were more numerous than the abductees, which matches what you observed in the tracks. Two or three footed creatures, and an undetermined but high number of bony-hands creatures. No traces of wheels, so they must have been carrying their victims. Which makes sense, because no trailer could go where they went.
You found several spots where they apparently took a break, but found no camping spot. They either used magical means to make and hide their camp, hid it in some place you didn't find, or didn't took more than short breaks.
Jun 6, 2018 8:53 am
The four of you are hidden about 300 feet from the entrance. No human-sized creature would leave tracks on the rocky ground your are currently standing on, but that abandoned place would make a perfect hideout for the raiders. There is no creature in sight, though, not even standing guard near the entrance.
The sun has already far exceeded its zenith, but you still have a few hours before the light begins to fall.

What do you do?
Jun 6, 2018 10:34 am
OOC:
I am writing this from the perspective that we are all at least acquainted, on a first name basis but nothing really more. Jacques would likely have tagged along from Tar, and would not have a close bond at this stage with any PC. As such, he wouldn't know much more about them except for their name and what they are wearing.
"We need to push on," Jacques announced to the party, the black clad wizard never taking his eyes from the cave entrance. "We've been at this for two days now, we must be gaining on them and the longer we wait the more of that distance we give up."

Jacques finally tore his eyes from the cave and fixed each of the companions with a steel cold glare, emphasizing his point.

"I'll sneak forward to the cave entrance. If its clear I will signal for the rest of you to join me."

Jacques adjusted his pack and pull his Belfry top hat tighter around his head as he made ready to move.

— Can you see in the dark? Mih stops Jacques by placing hand on wizard's shoulder. And I don't think we can be very sneaky in there. Especially with torches or other sources of light... Just follow me.

After saying that he straps shield to his left arm, pulls out a torch and moves forward.
OOC:
Sorry, but there's no way my character allows anyone else go in first - that's not in his nature
Jun 6, 2018 11:18 am
Jacques stops dead in his tracks at the touch from the barbarian. Momentarily glaring at the barbarian's hand on his shoulder he shrugs it off. His eyes meet the barbarian's and for a moment he thinks to make something of it when a thought crosses his mind.

With a forced effort he manages a twisted smile and makes a gesture offering the barbarian to go first.

"After you then," he states. "I care not, as long as we progress before that sun sets."

Jacques makes to follow the barbarian.

As a reminder, "the path that leads to the entrance is cluttered with rocks, probably unhooked from the side of the mountain. The biggest of them are twice your size".
It is possible to attempt to sneak to the entrance hiding behind them. If you want to try that, everyone in the group that goes make a Dexterity [Stealth] roll.
OOC:
As the question about the alternative Group Check rule (and other cleaned Core DD rules) still is in discussion, we won't use them yet.

Tianni does her best to move quietly, but from time to time the three others can hear her armor's rattling echoing on the stones.

Jacques, Mee'haïl and Chathum walk quietly up the path, looking for anything suspicious around. They can hear, high in the sky, the sound of a strong wind that they cannot feel yet. Dark clouds appears on the horizon.

About 60 feet from the entrance, Mee'Haïl nearly steps on a dirty woman's clothing on the ground. There is some earth on it as well as little blood spots, and some parts of it are torn, but it doesn't look like it's been here for more than a few hours.
From here, you all can see some interesting features about the place. You already knew there were three openings, but only the middle one goes deep in the mountain ; judging by the remaining hinges, the leftmost have at some point had a strong door and bars at its only window. You can't find anything special about the last one for where you are standing.
There are large traces of copper green all around the entrance and on the mountain's side. This place probably was a copper mine. A dwarven copper mine, judging by the style. But it looks like it has been abandoned for several centuries. Maybe it ran out of copper ore?
Jun 7, 2018 4:34 pm
After a short pause, Mee'haīl continues his advance towards the middle entrance, carefully stepping over tattered cloth.
Jun 7, 2018 6:33 pm
Tianni approaches cautiously, also, sheathing her longsword and trading it for a javelin. She plays with the javelin's grip a little bit to ready herself to throw it, and she grasps her shield tightly with her other hand.

She stands next to Jacques and Chathum briefly and whispers, Should I go further ahead? Seems like danger may be closer than we think.
Jun 7, 2018 8:08 pm
I nod a Tianni and ready my crossbow.
Jun 7, 2018 8:23 pm
Tianni takes deliberate steps forward, javelin and shield ready.

Rolls

Stealth (disadv) - (1d20, 1d20)

Jacques stops as he notices the woman's discarded garments. Bending down he lifts it with his dagger and after a moments inspection pockets it within his overcoat. Standing again he looks about the entrance.

"The sun lowers," he speaks to the party members. "I say we move in now. Something more sinister occupies this mine and it ain't dwarves."

Dagger still in hand the wizard checks the shrunken night hag's head, his arcane focus, is securely at his side. Having spent many years digging graves he was not unaccustomed to the confines and earthy smells of holes within the ground, this one was just bigger.

Jacques moves toward the entrance as quiet as he can.

Tianni walks in first and takes a few seconds to get accustomed to the darkness. Thanks to her darkvision, she can see further in the mine than any of you.

After a short corridor (maybe 20 feet), four large stairs made of volcanic rock go down into the mine. Getting the ore in and out would have been easier without stairs, but this entrance was not made in the sole purpose of getting in and out : the engraved walls, the finely cut stone slabs, the copper gliding... This was made to show off. They must have been proud of this mine, because after centuries this entrance still looks better that your average human city.
Down the stairs, you see what's left of the rails that looters didn't take yet. Because of them, it doesn't look like there is much left in there but cobwebs on the walls, ceiling and some parts of the floor. Lots of them, actually, dusty and disgusting.

This... hall is big, large enough to have people unloading mine carts, trading and carrying their goods out. Due to its size and the low lighting, you can't see clearly the end of it. It looks like there is regular passage here toward the north and west, and you hear strange faint noise echoing in the mine. It is irregular enough so that you know it is made by a a living thing...

I place my hand on Tianni, allowing myself to be led through the darkness.
Jun 11, 2018 7:28 pm
OOC:
I'm switching to first-person from third from now on.
After crossing the threshold of the mine's entrance, I halt for a brief moment to light up the torch. Flames dance and sparks fly as the bright beacon wards out the darkness in the tunnel. I sigh and look around, feeling the wall with stretched out left hand.

— Let's not pretend that we can sneak up on anyone here, yes? Most of us can't see in the dark and moving in that metal ... armor is very loud, no?
OOC:
Any chance that I can roll something to determine the nature of the noise?
Jun 11, 2018 9:29 pm
OOC:
@Kuroi agreed on the first person, I think I'll do the same in the games where I'm a player.
With the distance and echoes, you can't tell much more than "it is a living, probably moving thing". Nothing you've ever met, you are almost certain of it.
I'll wait until you guys either start moving or declare some actions.

OOC:
If Tiani wants to go first, Mih will be a rearguard
Jun 12, 2018 9:56 am
Tianni is going to lead the way, javelin and shield in hand.

She's not going to try to stealth up anymore (it's futile). She is going to walk normally, javelin ready to throw at a threat.

Rolls

(6) + 1 = 7

Jun 12, 2018 1:47 pm
OOC:
Just a note for later : unless you are looking for something specific, you don't need to bother rolling for perception. I'll use your Passive Perception to give you any relevant information.
OOC:
I added the light from Mee'haïl's torch (yellow) and the Tianna's darkvision (white) ranges to the map. The three humans in your group can only see within the torch radius, Tianna being the only one to have darkvision.

Also, tell me if the current positioning is correct and if that will be your default positioning as you move in the cave.
As you get down the stairs, can see that the missing parts for the dwarven rails have been taken, probably by looters : it is near the entrance and metal is worth some money if you can sell it.
You can also see a room on each side of the entrance with worked walls and elegant stone slabs. The one on the left has a big stone table that could not be moved by less than a full bastion of dwarves, and some broken wooden furniture scraps. In the far corner, there also is a big pile of something -probably barrels and casks- covered in cobwebs.

Tianni looks back and says, The path over there she points her javelin point to the west, looks really dangerous. Any of you good at finding traps? I would rather not have the roof cave in on me as I walk up...
Jun 12, 2018 4:05 pm
I've read about traps, but have no practical knowledge of finding them.
Jun 12, 2018 5:51 pm
Tianni investigates the pillars (not closely) to see if she can find anything dangerous, or anything rigged to cause harm.

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+1)

(14) + 1 = 15

Jun 13, 2018 8:53 am
Upon close investigation, Tianna can't find any kind of device that would cause you harm. She does, however, notice a strange translucent kind of rope. A tight rope that goes from deeper in the tunnel to some kind of small hole (maybe 15 inch) in the ceiling.
As you get closer to the tunnel, you are now all able to here the noise coming from that way and you begin to notice something that smells like rotting meat.
Being closer to the tunnel also let you determine that the noise comes from several creatures, probably some kind of animals. They shriek and seem too be fighting over something, which might explain why they didn't notice you yet...
Jun 13, 2018 11:58 am
OOC:
Any chance Mih knows what those creatures are?
Jun 13, 2018 12:11 pm
OOC:
Sorry, had an important meeting so I pushed the message before I finished it.
Mee'haīl, thanks to your knowledge of nature, you can tell that they sound like insects or something of the kind. And if Tianna shows you the weird looking rope, you would be able to confirm that it looks... insect-produced. And while you inspect it, you can see at times very low vibrations of said rope.
Jun 13, 2018 12:14 pm
OOC:
He grew up in a Great Forest, so he should be able to recognize that this is a cogweb?
Jun 13, 2018 12:34 pm
It is about 2 inches wide, so it's unlikely that he ever saw something like it. But giant spiders sometimes make webs in the Great Forest, and it does indeed look like an enlarged version of a single spiderweb string.
Jun 13, 2018 12:54 pm
Noticing that Tianni found something, I approach her and bring torch closer. As the light reflects in this almost translucent "rope", I squint a little and after a brief pause turn to others.

— This looks like a string that giant spiders make, yes? I scratch back of my head. But this one is big. Too big. That means that spider is also big.
Jun 13, 2018 1:47 pm
OOC:
Pro tip for the map, because it is somewhat big : you can zoom in with Ctrl+Alt++ and zoom out with Ctrl+Alt+- without messing with your browser zoom.
Jun 13, 2018 2:12 pm
Perhaps you and I should lead together, and the others should stay at least 10-15 feet from us. We must continue this way.
Jun 15, 2018 12:29 pm
OOC:
It's been long enough since the last post, so I consider that everyone agreed with its course of action.
Tianna and Mee'haïl take the lead and march forward, alert to any danger. As you advance in the tunnel, the walls get narrower and less worked out. They start to be covered with cobwebs, old and fresh ones, that seem to concentrate in a passage on your left.
She spots it first, in the middle of the webs, just a split second before the light from the torch reaches it : a wolf-sized creature with two long arms-looking legs, two very thin ones and large eyes that reflects the light from your torch.
[ +- ] Said creature
Tianna, you can take an bonus action or reaction right now! Then the creature will notice the incoming light, will shrill a loud cry and we will roll for initiative.
OOC:
Everyone, we'd save some precious time if I ran everyone's initiative in the future: would you be OK with that?

Mee'haïl I'm guessing you dropped the torch when you grabbed your sword, can you confirm that? If you want to attack while holding it, you'll have disadvantage on the roll.
Tianna's longsword hits the carapace so hard that the creature falls to the ground shrieking before getting back on its legs. Things don't go that well for Mee'Haïl's enemy : the greatsword cuts right through the creature, spreading some kind of sticky yellowish liquid around. As the creature realizes what just happened, you hear three others screaming in pain and anger.

After seeing that the newcomers are not such easy targets, the spiderling dangling from the ceiling ponders her initial impulse.

I'm not gonna nitpick about partial illumination of the torch due to its positioning. But the fact that it dropped on the ground does have its importance. You'll learn more about that as you continue to explore the cave... ;)

Mee'haīl, pushed by the rage of his people, delivers another deadly blow that slashes though the spiderling's left legs and lower body. The creature crumbles into dust and cobwebs with small shrilling cries.

The last, remaining one, jumps back and tries to run away! At that moment, you see a crackling blue blast pass right next to you and stop the creature before it even jumps. It falls on the ground, hard and cold as a block of ice, and silence fills the cavern again.

Do we keep track of XP in character sheets?
As the last creature falls, the red haze slowly retracts from my sight and my breathing stabilizes. I slowly move greatsword to the scabbard on my back, strap the shield on and retrieve torch from the ground.

— This was fun, yes? I ask my companions somewhat cheerfully.
Jun 25, 2018 10:43 am
With the torch's flickering light on the ground, the paths that lies in front of you are spine-chilling.
Air is still, foul, and the organs that have been spread on the ground doesn't make things any better. There are cobwebs everywhere, and they seem to get denser as the path advances. The irregular half-hidden path on your left, from where three creatures came, is covered in web of every kind. The nasty smell seem to origin from there
The tunnel is more damaged here, with big rocks on your way to go forward or left, and a 4 feet tall cliff on your right followed by somewhat worked steps.

What about that strange sound - is it still present?
Jun 25, 2018 9:54 pm
OOC:
@Kuroi I already tried that in other campaigns, but removing XP from the game actually hurts the player experience. You lose a useful progression tracking tool, and I lose a very useful teaching tool. So XP will be tracked :)
I'll put that in the Party Tracker, and give your advancement whenever you get some XP. So you currently have : 100/300 XP
The strange noise that brought you here isn't present anymore. It must have been one of the creature, if not several of them. As you observe them, you notice that the last spiderling that jumped on you has some... flesh on its carapace and head. Not the yellowish flesh that you've been spraying around and that already started to turn brown, but some meaty flesh. Decaying flesh, but still...

She keeps an eye out for danger as he inspects the remains.
Jun 26, 2018 2:07 pm
One thing is almost certain : the creature from whom this flesh comes was already dead when the pieces was ripped from it.
They seem to have undergone some kind of very damaging treatment. Even if it looks like its host have been dead for a good week, you can see upon close investigation that it has only been dead for half what it would appear. The nature of the creature, however, is impossible to determine from the flesh itself, and you had no idea until you found, barely visible in the mouth of the spiderling, a half shewed toe. A human toe, actually.

Jul 5, 2018 3:14 pm
Each time your torch touches a new patch of cobweb, it burns in a flash just like it did while you were fighting the arachnoid creatures. You quickly spot that, if those thin webs are easy to inflame, the huge string that comes out of a big hole in the wall and runs into the passage —just like the one you spotted earlier— doesn't. Probably something to do with its apparent moisture.

In the tunnel, the stagnant air smells feels like it is impregnating your clothes and hair. The stench gets stronger as you advance, until you spot its source : lying on the ground in an even smaller passage on your left, you find two human shapes rolled up in spiderwebs with a big webby egg attached to them.
The one closer to you was apparently the object of the fight you overheard, having one of its legs missing and other visible bites on his rotting body. The second one appears to be in way better shape, either protected by one of the spiderlings or saved by your intervention.

On your right, a similarly narrow tunnel goes up and turns right at the edge of the light from your torch.

They are moving you. Again. Will it hurt too? You can't wait for it to just... end. But wait, what is it? Fresh air, voices!

The cocoon is robust, somewhat sticky, but pretty clean otherwise. As Tianni cuts the prisoner free from his prison, he starts to breath again. Barely at first, then he takes a deep breath and seems to regain consciousness.

Bug, it feels like you just woke up from the dead: you feel weak, nauseous, and have a hard time to even try to get up. You can't see or hear very well yet, but it comforts you a lot to feel hands on you. Your left shoulder hurts a lot, you'll have to look into that. Fortune in your misfortune, it seems like they rolled you in that cocoon with most of your stuff. Your waterskin has been perforated, but that's about it.

That's a nature check, so you got 16.
The first egg, the one attached to the dead body, has already hatched. By the size of the egg you (Mee'haïl) guess that what came out of it probably was one of the spiderlings. The second egg, on the other hand, doesn't show any sign of being at term. By cross-checking your observations with the damaged corpse, you an tell that it take about a week for the egg to hatch and start to eat the body.

A handsome young man spills from the cocoon gasping for breath. He is a half-elf dressed in fine clothing, and clearly far from his element. He is battered and bruised, and as he regains his wind he grabs his left shoulder with a wince. After a few moments of groaning and gasping for air, he looks up at the Tiefling and the Wild Man. "I'd thank you for my freedom," he says with a dry hollow voice, "But with those blades in hand I wonder if that sleeping bag was a better fate." He gives a dry hacking cough. "Not likely though. Who are you?"

He tosses aside a broken water skin, and then kicks off his boots and dumps out some coins, giving a snort at the amount.

"Have you some water to spare? Or wine, if you don’t mind my preference. I’ll pay," he says while jangling the coins in hand. "You can tell me about these poor villagers while we drink."

As Tianni said, your two other companions seems to have fled during or just after the fight. As Bug gathers his mind, you probably enjoy the the morbid silence of this corner of the cave.
The smell of the rotting corpse lying next to you three is starting to get you uncofortable, though, which is probably why you notice a light draft of fresh air coming from the other side of the tunnel (the one that goes west and turns north). But it is a narrow passage, and certainly a bad place to be if spiders come back.

"I'd rather a wine skin than a battle ax, but I don't shame myself when the time comes. I know a trick or two to deal with a sticky situation. Most, anyways." He says with a nod to his former prison.

Standing up, he tightens his sword belt, where a long thin rapier hangs in an old leather sheath, but he doesn't choose to arm himself by blade. One last rummage through his bag, he pulls out a slender ash wood crossbow. He adds a quiver of quarrels to his belt.

Due to the moisture of this kind of web, you have a hard time trying to set them on fire. But at some point, one of the strings catches fire and burns with an unexpected intensity. Fire spreads slowly on the web but it will certainly hurt Tianni if it reaches her, which should happen within seconds.
Tianni, you've got one last saving throw before the fire reaches your right leg. Entangled like your are in the web, it won't be an easy task! One good thing, though : the fire weakens the web, and you are no longer at disadvantage for your roll.

The burning web produces a low crackling and some smoke, but not as much and you might expect. As soon as she gets freed from the web, Tianni stands up and run through the fire with bits of web still attached to her armor and horns. Mee'haïl does not wait long before dashes forward to follow his tiefling companion. The tunnel is very narrow with cobwebs everywhere and as you rush you pray to not run into another of these sticky webs because you might not have time to hack through it before fire caches up. But no such thing happen.
The tunnel leads to a natural cave that barely has barely been touched by tools. It is surprisingly cleaner than the tunnel you just got through, with only dirt and small cobwebs here and there. There are big greenish flows on the wall and ground. This is without a doubt an unexploited vein of copper ore! It looks like the ceiling collapsed here a long time ago, turning a huge opening into smaller rooms and tunnels.
OOC:
Bug, you need to quickly chose if you follow your saviors through fire or try to run away somewhere else.

Magnus, you're up!
[ +- ] Sedror
Jul 25, 2018 6:29 pm
"SEDROOOOOOR!"

A deep voice bellows and a short man covered in cobwebs springs from one of the dark passages. He points meaningfully at Tianni, being the closest of the two, and a coppery wave of magic energy flashes for an instant around his outstretched finger and then appears and lingers in his eyes.

"Give me the treasure!" He demands, his eyes faintly glowing with magic energy as he stands poised for action before the group.

The man appears to be a dwarf who wears little more than the few cobwebs that now cling to him. A large, white, cut diamond and orange crystal both hang on separate plain necklaces from around his thick neck. You can see the straps of what must be a backpack, though the pack itself is hidden behind his bulky mass. Beneath the cobwebs and smudges of dirt your torch light reveals coppery dragon-like scales that cover the majority of his body.
Jul 25, 2018 9:15 pm
Bug chases his fellow adventurers down the passage, cursing loudly as he dances away from the flames. Once he enters the next chamber he gives a great sigh of relief, which turns to a gasp of surprise. "Whoa!" He exclaims as the stranger springs from hiding, raising his cross bow to attack, his eyes wide with surprise. "Are you mad, Dwarf?!"
Jul 25, 2018 10:34 pm
Eyeing the newcomer, the dwarf seems to change his mood and takes a cautious step backward.
" I'm Sedror, dwarf. Er. Yes I'm mad! No treasure, and too many bugs! And this copper vein hasn't done anything to make me stronger! Of course I am mad!" The dwarf eyes each of you for a moment before he ends in a huff.
"You haven't found anything but webs either or you wouldn't still be in here... Why don't you join me and we'll split it, uhh seventy seventy." Sedror loses the copper glow in his eyes as he starts counting on his fingers, holding up various amounts as he seems to be gauging your reaction to his offer.
Jul 25, 2018 10:46 pm
"Seventy seventy?" Bug says breathlessly, lowering his crossbow with an incredulous look upon his face as he turns to Tianni and Mee'hail. "What in the hells is this one on about?"
Jul 26, 2018 1:50 am
We can worry about divvying loot up later. We have someone that requires retribution.

Dwarf, come with us, and I will give you 10 gold pieces once we are out of this place!
Jul 26, 2018 2:22 am
Bug raises his eyebrows at Tiani. "Retribution?" He looks between all the adventurers. "I think a few explanations may be proper at this time." The disheveled youth looks from person to person, waiting for someone to speak first.
Jul 26, 2018 3:10 am
We are hunting some evil people. They came into these caves, so we followed. I am a bounty hunter. Mih and I were sent with two others to bring some terrible people to justice. At the first sign of spiders, the two others ran, leaving us in the lurch. We are happy to have found you both.

However, our trail is going cold, and we must be off! Let us go!
Jul 26, 2018 3:42 am
"Evil?" Bug asks suspiciously.

"Look, I'm not going anywhere until I know what I'm wrapped up in, and if you keep blundering around you won't make it far alone. And, another thing, I'm not about to run with every half-naked glowing dwarf I run into babbling nonsense in an spider's nest."

Sedror stands stupidly as he tries to put together what is happening, then bursts out laughing. He calms himself long enough to face Bug and exclaim;
"Ahhaha! Then you take after your father, not your mother, halfie ahh-hahaa!"

Sedror laughs heartily for several long moments, congratulating himself on his joke, before turning teary eyed toward Tianni. "Well missus, uh,
Horns, you've got yerself a deal! I don't like evil sorts, they always take me treasure and scheme all night! That's why I left me home! And I hate spiders, but they don't scare me. Haha! Had a little tiny one musta been biting me fer hours before I rolled over on 'em in me sleep and crushed him haha!
"

Sedror springs over to one of the green flowing walls. He rubs his hands in the water and tries to remove the cobwebs and dirt from himself. He starts singing in dwarven, but just hums most of the words that he can't seem to recall.
Jul 26, 2018 7:58 am
OOC:
Ok, let's consider that Mih was hurting from that burn on the jaw and is keeping quiet for now.
As much as this strange dwarf was unusual, I only gave him a quick glance and as soon as all signs of confrontation died down, started looking around for tracks of the group we were pursuing...
Jul 26, 2018 1:30 pm
Bug draws himself upright at Sedror’s cackling.
"You best watch your words, Dwarf." Bug’s voice low and brimming with contained anger. "I am as true as any elf, and not at all like my father.

"How do you know this glittering fool is not the evil sort you are pursuing? Or a demon, for that matter, My Lady of Horns?"
Jul 26, 2018 1:48 pm
As you encounter the scaly dwarf and start a most bizarre discussion, you can hear your pursuers shrieking at the fire they can't seem to cross. You've bought yourself some time. How long will depend on the time it takes to burn the webs completely.

Tianni you can barely see it but there are some immobile spiderlings far in one of the passages. They seem to be turning their back on you for now. That passage is the one that was on your right when you came out of the burning tunnel, and it goes down with lots of big rocks in the way.

Mee'haïl, as you look around you notice two things.
First, the walls, ground and air are somewhat moist, which is certainly due to the water you see dripping from the ceiling onto the western wall. That's where the passage from where Sedror came out is located, and where he currently is rubbing his hands.
Second, they don't seem to be any tracks in here. Which is notable, because since you entered the cave you have always seen at least some of them.
Jul 26, 2018 7:06 pm
"Hahaa maybe ye is true elf. No elf ever liked me jokes neither." Sedror remarks as he wipes the worst of the webby cave filth off him.

"I can smell we got not too much time but uh.. Who we hunting, Horns? Can't help ye find 'em if I don't know whatcha alookin fer. Is it murderous orcs? A boogerymen? Werejackalopes? Dognabbers?" Sedror ambles back toward Tianni and stops in front of her, his face full of questions.

Aug 3, 2018 3:27 pm
As you discuss with the weird scaly dwarf you just encountered and look for your next move, the fire continues to burn and the spiderlings to bark shriek at it. It's been two minutes or so since you got out of the tunnel, and you can already see the light from the fire decrease.

Sedror, the hole in which you were hidden wasn't closed : it was more of a tunnel, but very small and you'd have to crawl or at least duck if you wanted to get in there. It was going up, for the record.

I flash a smile to the Bug and scaly dwarf and join Tianni, while looking around for any tracks of the raiding party...
Aug 8, 2018 11:15 pm
I guess you are all looking for where to go next. As Tianni and Mee'haïl (at least) are looking for tracks, the best one should make a Wisdom (perception) check Ith advantage (from the other's help). If more people are involved in the search, I'll grant you additional bonuses.

But as you couldn't spot any track with your previous search, you have little hope to discover some now. So, in the absence of tracks to follow, what would you be looking for?

The fire that you started in the tunnel is getting weaker and weaker, and spiders may decide to jump at any time now. They keep making their noises, which one of you can try to get a vague sense from by listening to them. That will be a pretty hard Wisdom (nature) check, though.

Mee'haïl, what are you looking for?

Bug, Sedror, do you continue to talk as the others search the room for some clues you can't understand yet.

Sedror, your attack doesn't seem to hit anything else than stone, but you do get their attention.
Tianni, you're not sure but it sounded like they might be coming from the rock's path. What is certain is that they are coming from the tunnel.
As the fire gets weaker, Tianni comes next to Sedror and barely finishes her sentence before a large swarm of half-burning spiders flood the tunnel and rush toward you, completely killing the remaining fire in the process. You all get surprised by the violence and speed at which the spiders are coming. Bug, who just woke up from a rather long lethargy, can't figure out what to do other than encouraging his companions ; Sedror, who initially was pretty confident, now looks less enthusiastic about the incoming swarm ; Tianni was quick enough to smash some spiders on the wall before they can dodge the attack.

The handaxe attack connects and kills some spiders, but if feels inefficient compared to what's coming. It might be worth considering another approach than trying to hack through them faster than they eat you.

Anyway, as you attempt to contain the incoming wave with your weapons and bodies, you slowly get covered by spiders. However, they are not as deadly as you might expect. And even if you are now almost covered with black fur and legs, it looks like they are having a hard time going any further or even finding an opening in your defenses to bite you.

The axe attack seems to be pretty ineffective, passing through the spiders while only killing a few. They reply by climbing on the axe's handle and biting your hand, probably so that you let it go. Tianni, some of them got into your armor and attempt to take advantage of that situation.
Bug, from where you are standing it is now clear that the spiders are reluctant to even walk in here and when they do they do their best to stay off the ground and walls.
Sedror, you are now in a dusty tunnel with gravels and small copper ore bits on the ground. The ground is somewhat moist, barely enough to even feel it. Battle is still raging in the cave behind you. If you want to join the rest of the team, you'll have to walk on them (which is a difficult terrain, so half your speed rounded down). Or come up with a brilliant idea of some kind. What do you do?

Damn I don't want to have another week like this one! Sorry guys, I'm back on the normal posting rate now.
Crossing the room is hard even for you Mee'haïl, with all the spiders they try their best to jump on you while doing their best to stay out of the ground. None of them even tried to climb on the walls or ceiling, which is pretty unusual for spiders as far as you can tell.
Anyway, you manage to reach the tunnel and lower to follow your companions, keeping your enemies away with your ax and blocking the way with your shield. As long as you stay in that position and walk backward in a crouched position, few spiders should be able to go passed you. But you'll have to figure how to lower your shield at some point...

Sorry, I should have made it more explicit.
--- End of combat turns : you may act as you wish ---

Order in the tunnel (cannot be changed):
Sedror, Tianni, Bug, Mee'haïl (spiders)
So you end up packed in that narrow tunnel with Sedror leading and Mee'haïl protecting your back. Spiders will certainly follow you, but they have little room to reach you as you slash and smash them: we'll consider that you take damage here and there, but not much.
OOC:
I'll make an attack roll per posting day vs Mee'Haïl with minimal damage to keep a small pressure while leaving some room to plan ahead.
So what do you guys want to do now that you are here? There isn't much choice for the way to go, but you have some time to plan or think of something...
Sep 25, 2018 12:12 am
"Go! Go! Go!" Shouts the young Bard. "We can't let them swarm us while we're this packed!"
Sep 25, 2018 2:26 pm
Despite Mee'haïl's efforts to contain them, some spiders slip through his guard and attack him. Fighting in such a small tunnel makes it really hard for you to dodge incoming attacks. But, alert as he is, Mee'haïl stops the spiders mid-way with a deadly hit.

OOC:
As far as I know, the torch stayed in the copper room and no one lit another one. So you are advancing in a pitch black tunnel, which is fine for everyone but Mee'hail.
--
Mee'hail, we'll use the Dodge action to resolve the fact that you focus on defending yourself the best you can, even if you can't dodge per se. There's no explicit rule about it, but given the context you also can use your Attack action to hit anything that would come in range. Both will result is about the same effect, but the former relies on your defense while the later relies on your offensive capabilities. You choice.
You follow the tortuous tunnel upward on something like 40 feet, and get the general feeling that you must be some somewhere above the copper room because of the very strong metallic smell around you.
At some point, the tunnel gets a bit larger and opens on a minuscule natural room that must be 5 by 10 feet. There's a tunnel above you that goes straight up, with some water dipping from it, and the tunnel you were in continues across the "room". It is large enough, though, to stand up and swap positions if needed.
The spiders continue to press on, and only Mee'haïl stands between you and that massive swarm. Sedror, you get in there first while Tianni does her best to wiggle in the tunnel with her heavy armor. What do you do?
OOC:
Mee'haïl, the spiders attacks is done with advantage as stated before, but the advantage is negated by your focus on defense.

"Oh, yes, do lead the way." Bug says with a mocking reverence, still watching anxiously over his shoulder. "You've no idea what you're after or where you're going, but you wanna keep on running? Look out, sister, all you're in-for is getting more tangled."
Sep 29, 2018 3:38 pm
Tianni, hearing this from the annoying squishy person that she and Mihe saved, says, Tread carefully, Bug, before you get squished. Or left behind...
Sep 29, 2018 3:53 pm
Where to go? It's just one tunnel! Keep moving!

Sedror allows Bug and Tianni to pass him. He pulls out a clay jug of oil and starts pouring on the walls and floor of the tunnel before it opens into their little room, trailing the last bit to work as a short fuse so he can put fire to the area while Mee'haïl retreats.

He then conjures a flame in his open palm and waits for Mee'haïl to pass the oily area before shooting the trail.

The dwarf's plan is surprisingly effective and, even if Mee'haïl suffered some burns in the process, the whole group is probably relieved to once again put fire between you and the spiders. You quickly cross the natural room to squeeze once again into the small tunnel.

Mee'haïl, you see the reassuring light of the fire for some time, until the tunnels makes enough zigzagging to hide it entirely. Then, unless someone provides light, it's pitch black again and you must rely on your other senses.
Tianni, you spot as you advance in the tunnel that there are spider tracks in this tunnel. Not a lot of them, but it is definitely used at least daily by big spiders. There also are cobwebs, but of a kind that matches "normal" spiders: being first, they slowly gather all over your armor and regularly get caught in your horns and hair. It's uncomfortable, but not enough to slow you.

You continue to advance in the tunnel. There are passages here and there that go up and down, but they are way too small for you. You continue to follow that path for a while, going up and down and starting to wonder if it even has another end. Those of you who are not used to narrow tunnel start to be uncomfortable, then almost claustrophobic. Meeting one of those big spider things in here would be a disaster...

But at some point Tianni spots a large passage one your right side. You can hear humanoid voices, probably coming from that opening. As you get closer, you can see that part of the tunnel collapsed into some kind of cave and that someone seems to be giving orders. You can't discern what is being told unless you get closer, but if you do so you'll need to be quite : you don't want to be spotted in that position!

The tunnel continues after the opening, going up and on the left.

Well aware of the fact that you would be in a bad situation if you got caught while in that tunnel, you all advance with exceptional coordination and stealth.

As Tianni reaches the opening, she can observe another one of these mine caves with a large stalagmite at its center. The opening where you are is near the ceiling and seems to have been revealed as some part of the wall collapsed. And while it would be an easy climb down, jumping would actually be dangerous: you are currently standing somewhere around 16 feet high with lots of rocks on the ground.
The voice comes from behind the pillar, where you can glimpse some arms movements without getting a good view of the creature. From what you can see, it might be a kobold. And while you are not able to understand what is being said, you recognize that the orders are given in undercommon. There are different kind of spiders that goes as she dispatches tasks: the spiderlings that you already met, giant spiders, and something that looks like a weird kobold with a spider abdomen attached in his lower back. Nothing Tianni or Sedror have met or heard of.

None of the creatures you can see seems to have noticed your presence, but it probably only is a matter of time!

Tianni, you action ties into one of your character’s personal characteristics so you can indeed make it an Inspired Action. Sucks that you rolled so badly twice :/
Everyone, Tianni jumps out of the opening without giving it a second thought. As she lands with a loud, unmitigated noise, you know that you have to either use that surprise element or hold back to engage your enemies later, leaving her alone.

Tianni, the moment you hit the ground you start running toward your enemy. You hear the voice shout short orders, probably wondering what the hell is happening. You go around the natural pillar on the left and end up right behind the strange humanoid creature.
[ +- ] The unknown spider humanoid
It look like the ones you saw through the opening and that have been sent to some task, with two major differences. The first and most obvious given where you are standing is that its spider abdomen have been severed from its body and that a large scar sits where the abdomen should be. The second one is that the creature is holding a dried human leg that it uses as a staff and wears various trophies from its numerous victories over humanoids, most of them being bones and trinkets.
Your attack, fulled by the rage of seeing such a creature parading with proofs of the many innocent lives it took, goes exactly as you intended it to go : through the disgusting creature. It roars/shrieks with a terrifying sound, turns around brutally while your sword still is in its body and gives you a look of pure hatred.

Mee'haïl and Tianni are ready to level up whenever you take a long rest. Bug is not far behind, and Sedror is catching up!

Mee'haïl's javelin flies at the fleeing creature and hits her as she turns back, surprised by the hurtful words she just heard. The attack reminds her the immediate that that is coming for her if she sticks around, and she disappears in the light coming from the outside.

Silent immediately comes back in the cave, and you only hear the death rattles of your arachnoid enemies along with the heavy breathing of your companions.
A small oil lamp on the north wall provides some light in the room, just enough to let you see the shape of your surrounding. The ground is surprisingly dry in here, especially compared to the green cave where you were standing only minutes ago. On the ground the remains of a cart rail goes east, west and south, which matches the opening that would allow you to get in and out of this room. You see two small and very dark tunnels on both sides of the southern opening that don't seem to go anywhere.
Some of you seem to need to take a break and take care of their wounds. Those of you who killed spiderlings have some kind of yellow goo on their weapons that is quickly turning brownish.

What do you do?
Nov 8, 2018 1:43 pm
Tianni will look for a cloth or something like it to wipe her blade off. If she cannot find something like that in about 30 seconds, she will approach Mee’hail, lay her hands on his head, and say, Mee’hail, with the authority and power of Selune, be healed.
OOC:
5 points of healing for Mee’hail.
After she finishes, she grabs her sword steeped in this nasty goo, and takes it over to the oil lamp, and puts the goo to the little flame to see if the goo catches on fire.

I pant heavily, watching as the creature flees. Red fog dissipates in my vision and I slowly begin to calm down. After few moment I walk forward to try and find my javelin.
OOC:
Tell me if Meeh can get it back?
About a minute later I return to my companions and accept Tianni's blessing.

— You and Night White Lady have my zanks... I say as my wounds begin to slowly mend. After gathering all my equipment back to their places, I pick up dropped torch and turn to my companions. Do ve go forrvard? Or rrest?
Nov 9, 2018 1:24 pm
Tianni, there's nothing that would look like a cloth in your immediate surroundings apart from what your party brought. When you put the goo on the little flame, it doesn't catch fire but emits a lot of very foul smelling smoke very similar to the one you smelled when Sedror burned your crawling pursuers minutes ago.

Mee'haïl, you easily retrieve your javelin in what you now recognize as the entrance of the mine. Spider-goo stains on the ground confirm that the creature fled outside. As you come back to ask your companions for rest, you see Bug carefully climbing down the opening to join you.
OOC:
I'll wave Bug's presence along with you until I hear from him. He's been silent in my other game and in his own game for some time now : must be unable to post at the moment.
Nov 12, 2018 3:31 am
Bug gives a low whistle as he joins the group.

"Well, this seems to be developing rightly on it's own. What in the seven hells is going on in this damnable cave?"
Nov 14, 2018 8:38 pm
Sedror approaches the spiderling he torched and inspects it.

Hah, looks like they burn same as anything else. Seems like we got 'em on the run! Let's finish the job!

Even for those how are not experts in undergrounds, a visible pattern is emerging as you travel through this abandoned mine: rooms of approximately the same similar size succeed to each other, opened in every cardinal direction unless the copper vein told otherwise. There's something reassuring to this symmetry, a charm that shouldn't not leave Sedror insensitive.
Remains of cart track show that there were three ways out of this room and a small, weak point of light appears at the end of the westmost path.
You are now standing in what looks like a dried riverbed that appears to go south toward the entrance of the mine and east into some unknown but somewhat similar cave. In the shallow riverbed the ground is hard and friable, a property that Tianni put to good use as she looks for tracks using her low light vision.
All the tracks that Tianni finds are rather recent, no more than a couple of days. She isn't comfortable enough with the anatomy of the spider creatures that inhabit this mine to tell exactly what they were, but she can clearly see that creatures seem to be coming and going from the east and to the outside. Whatever lies behind the massive doors that close the path that goes east in the mine's entrance has probably been left untouched for ages, as no track seem to go that way.

OOC:
Could we possibly get an updated map link?
Nov 20, 2018 6:35 am
Bug glances around the passage warily, his eyes lingering on the massive doors.

"Need I mention my frank and stern disapproval of our current direction?"
Nov 20, 2018 8:16 am
Overview and closeup look maps
OOC:
Also, I'm not sure if my formulation was clear about the fact the door is in the mine's entrance, not in the "room" where you currently are. I added a more visible door to the map to make sure no one gets it wrong.
Nov 20, 2018 3:18 pm
Being that the tracks go east, Tianni will say, we ought to head this way. Shall we?

She throws some dirt onto her blade, hoping that it will sop up some of the spiderling blood, and she will step cautiously in that direction.
Nov 23, 2018 8:15 am
I nod in confirmation.

OOC:
I kept waiting for more but it seem like we should just move forward.
As the game's scenario is pretty big, I'll try to get things to move faster and will appreciate if you helped me do that.
After taking a minute to recover from the messy fight you just had, you advance in the eastern tunnel. Mee'haïl is holding his torch (that is almost entirely consumed), while the rest of you enjoy their low light vision. Unlike what you saw so far, the tunnel doesn't go directly into another room : instead, it turns south and continues on something like a hundred feet. The tunnel has been dug in hard stone and show no sign of having any trace of copper. Either they followed a thin vein and ended up with that odd-looking tunnel, or they were simply searching for another one.
Anyway, the tunnel gets larger and larger as you approach its the next room. As you follow the track you can see that they continue up the walls and disappear in three or four large openings in the ceiling just before the end of the tunnel. These holes stand at about twenty feet above the ground.
The odd tunnel transitions into a natural cave that have been arranged as an important-looking hub. But this is not what's notable about this room : what is notable is that there are very explicit signs of battle here. Even if you can barely see half of the room, it's impossible to miss the dwarven skeletons that just lie on the ground in their shredded work clothes or damaged armors. Busted shields and old-looking weapons are scattered around the place.
There are pieces of wood everywhere, and clear signs that a massive explosion occurred here: a large crater
stand in the side of the "hill" close to the door, partially collapsed in its center, and menacing cracks around the crater testify to the strength of the explosion.
Most of the dead dwarves in work cloth are gathered before the closed doors that you can see on your right (to the west). The armed dwarves' bodies are closer to where you are standing, or just down the central elevation. It seems like those who ended here faced two fronts of enemies.

Tianni take a few cautious steps to get a better look at the scene.
The graveyard-like place gives some details up. Every body has been reduced to its simplest form, leaving only skeletons or piles of broken bones. The air is still, immobile even, in that place that appears to have stayed untouched for years. You can't precisely tell how long ago the massacre took place, but it looks like you where not born yet when it happened.

Sedror, your knowledge of stonework reveals that many stone block have been moved recently from the tunnel where you are standing and rolled or thrown into the natural cave. Traces on the ground and white marks on the stones that would be gone if it happened more than a few days ago.

Mee'haïl, you'll have to go check them to determine that. Do you? It'll be a simple Wisdom check, so that's 21.
What you already know is that if they were made of common iron they'll probably be very damaged. But as this appears to be a copper mine, it might be some kind of more durable alloy.
Dec 7, 2018 10:16 am
OOC:
What I meant was that Meeh was doing exactly that - going around and checking each weapon and armor that looks least damaged for their durability
Dec 11, 2018 9:30 am
As Mee'haïl walks in the room, unpleasant noises can be heard. Sinister cracks echo in the cave.
He gets in the room and start to look at the equipment on the dead dwarves. It seems like they fought with what they could find : pikes, wood axes, work hammers and metal bars... But some of them though, mainly those that are equipped like soldiers, seem to carry strange equipment. Upon closer look, it looks like it is made of gold, but is way harder than the expensive metal. They even seem harder than your average equipment, although somewhat heavier. There are warhammers and battleaxes, three handaxes and a shortsword. You discern what looks like a small round shield under one of the bodies and two of them have a helmet on their head, whether the head is still attached to their bodies or not.
Dec 11, 2018 1:39 pm
I pick up the battleaxe and try to give it a few swings...
Dec 11, 2018 2:22 pm
Tianni is going to keep a lookout until Mee’hail completes his search. She will then look at the shield and the shortsword, and she will stash some of the equipment for resale, if nothing more (she still has bills to pay).
Dec 13, 2018 11:25 pm
As Tianni is reaching for the shield, you hear the whistling of something flying toward you two. You duck by reflex but receive a large, sticky web that glues you both to the ground. The second after, a giant spider and one of the spider-kobolds land on you ready to eat your faces.

But even with the advantage of their ambush, things don't go as well as they planned. The moment they land you hear a frightening and loud crack coming from the ground. The cracks near the crater lengthen at incredible speed, crossing the whole room and reaching the walls. The ground cracks and escapes under your feet while fear grips you.
Everything falls apart: the ground, walls, dwarven skeletons... Mee'haïl's torch gets extinguished as you all fall in complete darkness.
