Nashkel Mine

The mine is dark. There are sconces on the walls, but with the workers refusing to enter today, none are lit. The deeper the party goes, the heavier the air gets with the smell unique to caves that’s somehow both dry and damp. It’s cooler in here, too, the only air coming from the passageway behind the party.

Underfoot, along the middle of the passageway, is a small track for minecarts. Unfortunately, much of the track’s metal looks to be in poor condition, no doubt affected by the same mysterious power corroding the region’s iron.

The initial passage connects to a large, relatively open space, with multiple tracks running across the floor and disappearing into a half-dozen other passageways.

Searching this maze of a mine may take some time.
OOC:
Up to you guys how to proceed! It's currently pitch black darkness all about, unless someone's got a torch or spell to light the way.
Jan 20, 2023 9:32 pm
Dieter turns to the group as the door shuts behind them "I want everyone to keep their eyes peeled. Just because we are encased in rock doesn’t mean we are safe. Keep an eye out for falling rocks, damaged support beams, and any funny smells. You can assume anything down here is hostile but do keep in mind that there is a possibility for survivors. Keep your eyes peeled and your head on a swivel. Let’s keep it tight and work as a team. Any questions or ideas?" dieter says as he lights a torch. "Does anyone have light magic?"

Stella follows along quietly. She didn't mind a dark night, but there are no stars in a cave. It feels constraining and cold, and not the kind that reminded her of home.

"Lavarandar's Lantern," she whispers in druidic. A string of starry lights flow from her mouth and hover around her, dimly illuminating the floor and walls just a bit for those without the ability to see in the dark.

She opens her tome and begins making a map. "Should have asked for a map..." she mumbles to herself. "And where they last saw Jof..."
Jan 20, 2023 9:37 pm
Aiwë stands at attention during Dieter's orders. At Stella's comment, she leans out the door of the mine.

"Hey! Where did you last see Jof??"

The workers converse for a moment, and then Emerson approaches the mine entrance. "Erm, they say they last saw Jof on the lower levels, near the transition shaft." He pulls a sheet out of his clipboard and passes it to Aiwë. "And here are the mine's blueprints. Bit of a maze down there, I'm afraid."
OOC:
You have the map! This will give you a convenient checklist of places to investigate on each level, and gives advantage on checks not to get lost. Handy!

Dieter waits for any questions or ideas but when none comes he taps his foot twice "Stella and Calliope, can you two find a way to scout ahead?better yet if you can find a way to safely determine what is infesting this mine that would be of great value. Sheemish do you have any contraptions that could be used for traps or keep us orientated? Aiwë and Runeson help me watch their backs they’ll probably need to focus all their attention on their Magicks. What do you two think would be the best way to do that?"
Jan 21, 2023 5:01 pm
Sheemish rummages through his pack and pulls out a number of makeshift contraptions.

1- An orb that emits bright light of 5 foot radius and then another 5 feet of dim light (magical tinkering)

2- a random piece of metal that will produce a prerecorded sound when touched (magical tinkering)

3- a cube that when activated will turn into a massive iron door (picked this one up in a randomized search roll)

And then Stitch hovers before the group bobbing and whirring eargerly to help.

Stella nods and exhales. She had to admit, Dieter was reckless in the fray, but he had some great leadership skills and tactics otherwise.

"Let's try this now..." she tells herself. With a bit of lethargy, her fingers glow and she sprinkles star dust in the air then begins painting them with her hand into a constellation. Before she can activate it, though, it fades.

She grunts and glowers, but tries again, tapping out the constellation more slowly and methodically this time. "Dragon of Dawn, help us search the dark," she whispers to it in druidic, as she finishes the stars, vaguely shaped like a dragon.

The constellation tinkles, then flashes briefly. It twitches its tail then wiggles it. Then it spreads its wings and stretches out its body, yawning with its star-made maw.

She sighs and smiles weakly. "There we go. Good morning...Draco," she names it, putting her hands on her knees and leaning forward towards it, eyes-stars sparkling yellow with delight. It hops around in the air like an excited puppy, landing on invisible platforms. "We need some help exploring," she tells it. "Can you help us?"

(Wild Companion to summon a familiar. Mechanically, it's an owl.)

Stella will telepathically direct it to help explore the cave branches as the party travels deeper into the mine.

"Oh! It's, uh, a familiar," she tells Dieter. "Made of energy from the Feywild, and I think a bit of the Celestial planes. But I like to call it stardust." she says, shaking the remaining glowing dust off her hand.

"It's technically, an arcane spell, but I haven't quite figured out how to pull it off yet...I think I still need to buy a brass brazier, but I keep forgetting..." She opens up her tome and adds it to her shopping list. "But I've been getting good at making things, and the druidic conjuration seems to make it easier. Sheemish and Stitch head off to a reclusive part of the mine (toward Dead End 1), taking care along the way to look for clues or anything out of the ordinary. Every so often there are minecarts, some bearing iron ore, some empty. In a few places Sheemish notes discarded pickaxes, as though the owners left them behind in a hurry.

After a short time, they arrive at the dead end indicated by the map. There is a glint of ore in the wall, but aside from that the place is empty and unremarkable.
OOC:
Sheemish is free to stick around here if he likes. You can get back to where you left the party, but trying to go anywhere else (including catching up to the party) will require an Intelligence check (+4 for you, unless you have any skill or tool that you think will be helpful, making it a +6).
Draco zips along a passageway, hopping through the air (toward Dead End 2) as it explores. Through a mental link with Stella it shares what it sees, a grayed-out vision of walls, floor, and ceiling. The images are surprisingly clear and detailed, despite the darkness. The dragon's hearing is crisp as well, pinpointing the source of any sounds bouncing around the mine's walls.

And so it is that Draco (and Stella) hears something from far ahead that doesn't belong in a supposedly empty mine: the sound of something moving. Is that scales, or perhaps claws, on stone?

"I guess we better follow..." She taps Calliope on the shoulder. "Can you lead me? I'm going to listen in to Draco..."

After following for a bit, Stella speaks up. We're hearing something... Stella says, light leaking through her closed eyelids. "Something moving...scales or claws. Not sure how big, but it probably doesn't belong." She opens her eyes. "We should probably investigate."

Come back, quietly and wait near the branch entrance. Let me know if it starts to leave. she tells Draco, imbuing him with the gift of the Firbolg (Guidance for Stealth).

While the party continues on to where Draco waits, Stella keeps gazing through her familiar's senses.

There's definitely something there. Every so often Draco hears a scrape on stone or a chittering whine. At one point Draco spots a pair of reptilian eyes peering from around the corner up ahead, but they pull back out of sight once noticed.

A few minutes later the party draws close to where Draco hides; Stella can hear the party's own approach clearly through Draco's hearing.

Maybe not as effective since she can't see though its eyes, but she's determined to at least contribute something to the group that isn't burning things down, since they seem to have entirely disavowed her other attempt so far.

It also can't hurt to have the conjuration already alive in case a fight is soon to break out.

Draco flits down another passage, sharp eyes looking for anything interesting. It makes it to 'Station 1' without any incident. While it's looking around, it notices another creature present. Both Draco and the creature stare at each other for a moment. It's larger than Draco, but not even as tall as Imoen. It nearly bolts, but then it cocks its head, reflecting the familiar's stars in its eyes... and then it pounces!
OOC:

Meanwhile, Calliope's firebird manages to stealthily quiet its flames, and appears as a bird made of blackened ash as it travels the dark corridors toward 'Station 3'. While its vision isn't quite so keen as Draco's, when it makes it to Station 3 it easily notices several nets secured above one of the chamber's entrances, along with a taught cord set a few inches above the floor. It seems that anybody caught unawares passing through the entrance will end up netted and restrained by the trap.

Round 1 Summary

In the dim light of Stella's dancing lights spell the companions and kobolds clash!

Dieter, the first to notice Sheemish's alarm, spins round and hurls two handaxes at a spellcasting kobold just before the front ranks crash against each other, and the kobold slumps against the tunnel wall, barely keeping its feet.

The front kobolds let loose a cacophony of yipping and jeering that echoes eerily throughout the mine as they make darting dagger attacks at Dieter and Runeson (Dieter takes 6 damage). One kobold is particularly well-armed with shortsword and shield, and manages to score solid hits on both Dieter and Runeson (Dieter takes 7, and Runeson takes 6).

At the same time, spells and arrows fly back and forth through the tunnel. The kobold sorcerer, though wounded, manages to send stinging fiery bolts at Dieter and Runeson (Dieter takes 11 damage, and Runeson takes 7) before Stella puts him down with her shining arrow. Imoen downs another kobold, picking it out from the crowd with an arrow in its eye (Lackey 1 dies).

The two kobolds in the middle rank take a moment to time their attacks. When the spellcasters are revealed, they lift their bows and nock strange red arrows with faintly-glowing runes. Their nature is revealed a moment later, when Stella takes one flaming arrow directly to her abdomen (Stella takes 24 piercing/fire damage). The druidess falls, and so does her spell providing light (Dancing Light spell ends).

Darkness immediately falls over the battle. Calliope also gets hit with a fire arrow, as does Imoen (Calliope takes 10 piercing/fire damage, and Imoen takes 14 piercing/fire damage). Another thunks into Aiwe's shield just as she finishes her spell. With eyes glinting red in the darkness, she releases her spell on the toughest kobold in front, dissonant whispers causing it to flee back down the tunnel.

Some light returns to the battlefield as Calliope summons fey flames onto the two kobold archers. Though the magical fire doesn't burn them, it does nicely light them up as targets (Both fail saves against Faerie Fire, and so grant advantage on attack rolls against them!).

Sheemish lets out a thunderous spell through his gauntlets, trying to force the kobolds back and buy the party some time, but the little lizards are tougher than they appear. Or perhaps the artificer isn't quite back on his game yet...

Stella's down, and Dieter might be too! That's 1/3 of the party down!

Commandos 1 + 2 are each granting advantage on attack rolls!

Dragonshield kobold has fled to the middle rank, but because it was forced movement he isn't in a position to put himself between the party and the commandos. So if you can get past lackeys 2 and 3, you can reach the commandos in melee.

Aiwë grits her teeth as she sees Stella and Dieter fall. She goes with her gut, and bends down next to Stella. With a clean jerk she pulls the arrow free from Stella's gut in a move that would definitely kill her with sepsis if she didn't have a blast of magic to follow it up with.

"Sister-girl, you have to get up!" Aiwë tosses the arrow aside and pulls Stella to a stand with one muscled arm under the druids slim ones. With her other hand she closes the wound with magic. "We need you! Your story isn't over yet!"

Verifying her allies are at least being seen to, Calliope pulls at the embers that splashed onto her from the Kobold's shot, and balancing a few on her fingertips, she flicks them one at a time back at one of the glowing ones. They grow in heat and intensity as they shoot through the air, searing where they connect, but one goes wide and prevents her from finishing the job.

Stella's eyes widen in shock at the flaming arrow's impact. She looks down to see the shaft protruding from her through her thin armor.

Then the searing pain hits.

"Papa, I think it's spreading!" little Stella says nervously.

She questioned lighting a campfire on top on the Great Oak---even a seven-year-old like Stella could tell you that---but Zenithral was cold and determined to make this a memorable night.

"Hmm? Oh, Snapple Gobs!" the half-elven archer exclaims, turning away from the bedrolls. The Great Oak wouldn't burn easily, but embers were being blown to piles of dried leaves and bark. "Flumphy, go get Halla!" he tells the floating flumph familiar who immediately speeds off.

Zenithral waves his hand a few times, trying to prestidigitate the flames away, but it simply gives way to more. He infuses an arrow with a elemental frost then fires, putting out the main campfire, but it's too late. He slumps his shoulders and sighs in annoyance.

Quote:
"Sister-girl, you have to get up!"
"Papa!!" Stella backs away, trying to find a place to stand on the huge branch, which was starting to char and burn.

The archer strides over and scoops up his daughter in his arms. "You're alright, Little Star. I've got you. Though your mother's going to kill me for this..." he says chuckling, then leaps off the towering tree.

Stella screams.

Or tries to. Nothing but a raspy groan comes out through ragged breaths.
Quote:
"We need you! Your story isn't over yet!"
Stella's blurred vision focuses on the girl in front of her red-tinged eyed. Aiwe. The cave. They were still fighting!

The white-haired archer swallows and nods, eye-stars regaining their luminance.

"Auroth, strike them down," she hisses in druidic with icy blue eyes. She steps away from Awie then knocks an arrow, an icy dagger forming at the tip. She draws then fires at the glowing reptile that shot her.

Her draw is weak, however, and the arrow pings nigh-harmlessly off its scales and clatters to the ground. Then erupts into shards of ice.

Round 2 Summary

With one third of the party down, the kobolds try to press the advantage, driving forward with growling yips and calls in Draconic!

Sheemish deflects a fire arrow with one of his gauntlets, then reaches down to touch Dieter's bleeding body, sending a pulse of healing through him. For a moment, Runeson is left the sole defender of the front line, but the paladin doesn't waver or flinch. Two kobolds leap at him, daggers searching for any weakness. Runeson swipes at one with his hammer, sending the kobold skittering back, but its friend darts forward with dagger extended... only to crash against Dieter's tower shield (Dieter's Protection fighting style turns that hit into a miss). The young fighter is back on his feet, and a flash of his sword cuts down the surprised kobold.

Meanwhile, Aiwe works to heal Stella, using a combination of magic and inspiring words to get the silver-haired girl back to her feet, as Calliope sends streams of red flame toward the faerie-fired kobold archers. The kobolds return with a volley of fire-enchanted arrows, hitting Aiwe and Calliope (Aiwe takes 11 piercing/fire damage, and Calliope takes 12 piercing/fire damage). Calliope slumps to the ground, her beautiful feathers marred with blood (Calliope is unconscious and dying!).

But just as one druid falls, the other rises. Stella's arrow of exploding ice kills one kobold commando, and also wounds the other commando and the dragonshield, who is coming to its senses.

Imoen leans against the tunnel wall, clutching at an arrow sticking out of her leg. Then, seeing just one archer remaining, grits through her pain and draws a bead on it. Calliope's lingering magic illuminates a gap in its studded leather armor, and Imoen's arrow finds its mark. The commando jerks at the impact, twists around, and falls dead to the ground.

The dragonshield kobold comes running back to the front line, shortsword diving at Dieter and Runeson (Dieter and Runeson each take 5 piercing damage).

Though there are only two of the enemy remaining, they bare their needle-sharp teeth and keep up the fight. What's worse, with Calliope unconscious the flames of her faerie-fire flicker and dim on the commando corpses, and the tunnel is in darkness once again! (We're in complete darkness now, I believe. If you don't have darkvision, you are considered blind - you have disadvantage on attacks, and attacks against you have advantage.)

With the lights out dieter pauses and waits for the right moment. He can’t see so he relies on his other senses to tell him when to strike..now Dieter swipes his sword forward. Feeling no contact he instinctively moves his wrist in a tear drop pattern that would cause the tip of his sword to change direction from swinging left to right and bypass a shield hitting the opponents chest. Dieter is rewarded by a moment of resistance against his blade tip than the sensation of deep slicing.

Round 3 Summary

The two remaining kobolds fight to the bitter end. The dragonshield nearly drives his short blade home into Runeson's side, but once again Dieter's interposing shield spares the paladin (again Dieter's Protection fighting style turns a hit into a miss!). The move costs Dieter though, for as he deflects the dragonshield's blow, the other kobold springs up into the air to drive its dagger down deep into the top of the fighter's shield arm (Dieter takes 10 piercing damage). The wound hurts, but Dieter is tough enough to slay his evil aggressor and still remain standing.

Sheemish works with his healing materials to get Calliope back on her feet as the fight continues just mere feet away. Stella buys them some time and space with a shining arrow that hits the kobold hard. Somehow, the tough little critter manages to keep itself up, going practically berserk in its efforts to kill the party all on its own.

Struggling to get a clear shot at this last enemy, Imoen drops her bow and pulls out a pair of daggers, then sprints forward to attack at close range. Her first dagger misses, but she manages to stab the kobold in its scaled foot (dealing 3 damage), distracting it enough for Calliope - risen like an avenging angel with burnt and bloody wings - to unleash a torrent of wildfire that finally ends the dragonshield.

The fight took only moments, but as lights from the last spells die down, the party is left considerably winded and wounded. For all their size and obnoxious yipping, these kobolds fought with devious cunning and determination. No wonder any miners who might have heard or glimpsed the monsters thought they were devils.

It takes only a few minutes more for Draco (and Calliope's wildfire spirit, if she recalled it) to return to the group.

Investigation of the kobolds' corpses yields a moderate amount of treasure (party gains 60 gold pieces), some crude arms and equipment - none of it worth keeping - and a peculiar glass vial containing only a miniscule portion of a slimy green liquid.

Peering around the corner where the kobolds came from shows the 'Dead End 2' as marked on the map. The veins of ore showing from the walls here are streaked with the same green slime found in the glass vial the kobolds had on them.

"If we face any more of these things with fire arrows, definitely focus fire on them." She chuckles. "Heh. Fire." Then winces a bit at the pain still at her stomach.

Despite having seen a kobold scout through Draco's eyes, the party doesn't encounter any others as they investigate the mine's main level. And so after the better part of an hour they arrive at the so-called 'transition shaft', which seems to be a wooden elevator contraption. The platform itself is currently out of sight, presumably at the bottom of the shaft. Part of the contraption includes a wheel that can be turned to lift the platform, but it looks like it will need some well-applied strength to get it moving.

Between Dieter and Runeson the wheel turns easily, and soon the platform ascends to their level. There are two more half-dried bloody puddles staining its wooden deck.

Dieter puts his hands on his hips "You know…. I’ve been trying to ignore the blood stains but I guess I have to acknowledge them, everyone there are various puddles of blood at different stages of clotting and drying. Don’t slip and mind the gap onto the platform." he then half bows and extends an arm out to the platform

The party boards the lift platform, where with a simple lever pull they begin to descend.

From the rough look of the walls here, it seems likely that this vertical shaft was a natural feature found by Nashkel's miners, who then modified it slightly to accommodate the lift.

As the lift bears the companions deeper into the darkness, the flap of wings above draws their attention. A handful of winged kobolds detach from the walls, each holding good-sized rocks perfect for raining down on the party below! To make things worse, several much larger forms flit back and forth through the air above; giant bats the size of horses, every one with a kobold rider!

Stella bites her lip at Dieter's warning and shrugs off her bow, keeping close to him. She made the mistake of underestimating these reptiles before, and she wouldn't make the same mistake again.

After the brutality of the last fight, she was starting to see Aiwë's point. If they didn't fight back, and fight fiercely, they could be put in serious trouble. Any attacker would be accepting the risk of death with each assault.

So these creatures who had dealt death, must also be accepting it.

Her eyes become a mix of ice and orange as her body shifts into a dark-night form covered in a constellation, eyes and mouth leaking light.

"Auroth," she says in druidic, calling The Ice Snake's name. It was almost ironic how she was using a reptilian constellation against these reptiles. She draws an arrow as it sheaths itself in ice, then fires it at one of the winged creatures. It bursts and one of its allies flying into the icy shrapnel.
(Ice Knife. Winged Kobold 2 & 3 each take lethal damage.)

"At'ar's," she follows up, drawing an arrow of radiance. She looses it at one of the riders, light smashing into its scaly face. Perhaps the monstrously large bats would be less of a threat without them.
(Starry Form Archer Attack. Rider 1 takes lethal damage.)

Round 1 Summary

As the party unleashes ranged attacks on the fliers above, those enemies let loose their own missiles. The winged kobolds drop their heavy rocks, and the others riding the giant bats hurl smaller stones with their slings. Even the bats show a form of ranged weapon as they let off dissonant screeches at the party below! Even Dieter's tower shield doesn't protect Stella from some of the barrage.

Stella takes 6 bldg and 5 thunder dmg
Sheemish takes 5 bldg and 2 thunder dmg
Aiwe takes 8 bldg dmg
Dieter takes 6 bldg and 2 thunder dmg

For all the annoyance and injury of the falling projectiles, the kobolds fall quickly to the party's attacks. One bat rider gets overly enthusiastic in his slinging and tumbles from the bat, and hits the descending platform with a smack right among the party (Rider 2 rolled a 1, falls, and dies. Oops!)).

In just moments there is only one wounded kobold left, and it's quickly set upon by the riderless bats. They rip and tear at the unfortunate creature, and its dying screams echo through the shaft as the party reaches the lower levels.

Stella clutches her arm and head, battered and bruised as her night-shade skin returns to normal. Nothing wasn't broken, thankfully, but she was getting dizzy.

She holds onto Aiwë for support and reaches into her healer's kit. She pulls out a salve wrapped in leaves, then rolls up her sleeve and ties the leaf and salve onto the arm. She sighs with relief as the pain immediately begins to numb. It would need time to actually heal, but the herbs should help with that too. They were different than the ones she was used to up north, but seemed just as effective.

(Healer's Kit, bringing her up from 4/17 to 16/17 HP)

"Were any of these ones carrying anything like the last ones?" she asks to no one in particular. "Besides rocks..."

When the group is ready, Stella taps out a series of stars once again, trying to make a faerie. She didn't know any faerie constellations, however. The stars flicker, then fade unceremoniously.

She tries again, this time creating a familiar out of a centaur wielding a sword. This time, the constellation flares. "Hail, uh," What did you name a centaur? "Centaur. We seek to liberate this place of intruding danger. Can you help us search and look out for it?"

It kneels its front legs and bows, then rises and gallops off into the darkness.

The party sets off into the lower levels, quickly leaving the lift behind in darkness. While Stella's tiny centaur familiar scouts out one of the nearest work stations, the companions head toward another.

The heat in the air rises. It's beginning to be uncomfortable, with no breeze to cool them off down in these depths.

The centaur finds the usual abandoned carts and tools... but also something else; a tripwire, similar to the one Calliope's firebird found in the upper levels. But rather than nets hidden on the ceiling, there are crossbows set up on either side of the entrance, rigged to shoot at anyone who trips the wire.

Meanwhile, the group discovers more poisoned ore in the walls of work station 5. The minecarts here have some ore in them, but it crumbles at touch. There's another bloodstain on the ground. Being more dry than the others, it must be from an incident at least a couple days older.

"Looks like my centaur friend found a crossbow trap down that last corridor," she relays.

Keep going and look for signs of reptilians, she asks it. When you find anything or reach the end, come back. Try to stay out of sight, but if they start chasing you back, hit the tripwire when they're in line with the crossbows.

She stops almost running into Dieter when he stops to scan for danger.

Stitch flits through the tunnels, stopping every so often to curiously examine this or that, and eventually arrives at one of the dead ends marked by the map.

Except it's no dead end.

Where there should be an unremarkable tunnel wall, there's instead a wide opening into a larger chamber. And there's light! A dim, reddish-orange glow emanates from a chasm that cuts its way across the floor like a fresh, angry scar, broken only by a rickety wooden bridge that spans from one side to the other. A quick glance into it reveals to Stitch that the light comes from a river of lava at the bottom of the chasm.

Distracted by the uncommon sight, Stitch doesn't see the hiding kobolds until too late. One of them sends a fiery arrow her way, and it punctures her right through the middle, and Sheemish loses contact with her as she falls, broken, to the ground (Stitch takes 13 dmg and 'dies').

Looking up quickly at the others, blue electrical light crackle from his gauntlet casting strange shadows on his face, it is clear Sheemish is still not fully himself. His whispers are short as he interprets the hums and clicks that are transmitted from stitch.

"not a dead end. Kobold archers. A bridge. A bridge over lava. Archers. Arrows of fire."A single sharp static pitch sounds in Sheemish ear and he jerks his head to the side eyes winced tight.

"stitch"he whispers into a gauntleted hand, "Stitch!" he says more earnestly."STITCH!" he practically shouts.

The young blacksmith appears to compose himself as he looks up at the team, but the eerie light reflecting in his eyes tells a different, darker story. His left arm twitches slightly.

"The kobold know we are here, you are free to get help but I doubt you’ll get far on a wooden lift with their arrows." Sheemish’s arm twitches again.

"I will distract them as long as I can. No one needs to follow this time" he says as he looks at Aiwe.

Sheemish fishes into his pocket and pulls out a strange cube. "I’m coming stitch" he whispers, though no static or whir answers in reply. He then turns and sprints down the hallway toward his fallen friend.

A small cube is tossed into the cavern and comes to rest between the kobold entry and the kobold at the bridge. It whirs to life as Sheemish sprints in just behind it. The cube lets out a gaseous hiss before its sides open up and out expanding in size as it unfolds and takes shape. In a moment, the little cube is now a free standing steel door, embedded into the cavern floor. what in the Ug?

Sheemish skids to a stop behind it, shielded from view from all but the entry kobold. The artificers gauntlets flare to life and the poor surprised kobold is blasted off its feet by twin lightning bolts and dissolves into ash in the air.

(Help — One attack against the Dragonshield has advantage next round.)

Meanwhile Stella's eyes are alight with a chill, stern ice as she slows and takes aim. "Auroth's Fang" she says, glowing ice coating her arrow. It streaks through the cave, striking the flame arrow-wielding lizards like a shining comet.

(2nd-level Ice Knife — Commando 1 takes lethal damage. Commando 2 takes 11.)

Round 2 Summary

The kobolds are ill-prepared for this fight. One of the commandos goes down immediately with Dieter's spear through its chest, and Stella's ice arrow makes short work of the other. Unfortunately, one of them manages to get a shot off before it dies and Imoen drops to one knee, fire arrow stuck in her leg (Imoen takes 11 dmg).

Runeson charges forward to meet the dragonshield on the bridge, twin lightnings from Sheemish streaking over his shoulders. The dragonshield manages to get in a lucky strike on Runeson (Runeson takes 5 dmg), and then one of Imoen's arrows hits it in the sword arm. Runeson's hammer comes cracking down, shattering the kobold's shield in a flash of radiance and it crumples to the floor of the bridge, barely alive. It doesn't look as though it wants to continue this fight (Dragonshield is left at 1 hp) and throws down its sword and broken shield.

Aiwe manages to get a hold of Sheemish, speaking sense and casting a spell that soothes his fears away.

The tiny stary centaur gallops over to the bridge inspecting the area across it and the chasm below, then returns, waiting for further instruction, but Stella is unsure.

"There were fewer of them, Sheemish caught them by surprise, and we knew what to expect," Stella points out. "But why do we need to cross the bridge? If we're trying to secure the area, shouldn't we just collapse it for now? Though there were an awful lot of them compared to what it sounded like from the miners..."

She notices the arrow sticking out of Imoen's leg and rushes over to help. "Sit down, let's get this out..." Using a numbing salve and knife, she removes the arrow and applies an herbal healing balm and bandages. (+13 HP to Imoen)

"I...found a lot of excuses to get out of bow practice, she admits.

"As an archdruid, Mama can heal almost any wound, but she wasn't always around—Papa and she sometimes had other duties around the Dale. So I worked under the village medic to care for injuries and the like with her. I started by just collecting and preparing herbs, but I watched and learned, and eventually started to help, especially with the village children! I miss them..." she reminisces, starting to quickly wrap the bandage around the wound. "Then I convinced Papa to let me work with her more often after he realized it helped reduce pain in the world. Ilmater's whole thing. So I did it a whole lot more often."

Aaaand, she says finishing the bandage, then looking up with a smile. "I've had a lot of practice this last week." The smile was somewhere between one that said "I'm glad I can be helpful," and "Why did I ever sign up for this?"
Feb 4, 2023 10:12 pm
For the second time in this dark mine Sheemish is startled out of what feels like a nightmare. Disoriented he shakes his head as if to earase something from it. He then turns to Aiwe, meets her gaze and gives a week smile. "He did didn't he?" The artificer reaches a gauntleted hand into a pocket and pulls out the broken remains of Stitch. "I guess I was just trying to save someone too." He pauses and breathes out a heavy sigh and a tired chuckle. "Didn't he lose a loincloth in that as well as end up getting captured? I guess I take after Ug in endangering people too." He gives a more confident smile to Aiwe. The gauntlet on his right hand retracts into a bracer on his wrist revealing the calloused hand of the blacksmith. But his left hand remains armored. He stares at the gauntlet for a moment before briefly shaking his head again. With a mix of muscle memory and skill, he begins working on mending Stitch. "Surprising that being imperfect they could still help save so many. Kind of gives some hope for the rest of us huh?"
Feb 5, 2023 1:13 am
Aiwë keeps her hand on his shoulder. "They give us so much hope!" she agrees with conviction. With a toothy grin she adds, "and lessons to learn. We'll have plenty of others, let's not learn this one twice, yeah? Let us help you."

Stowing her healer's kit, Stella nods at Aiwë and starts to follow.

She takes out a piece of parchment, holding it on the back of her tome and quickly sketches out the parts of the map that lead to their current location. Then she writes a note.

Reptilian warriors have infested the mine via a bridge and breach here. She draws an arrow pointing to their location on the map. We've cleared the upper level and path leading here. We're entering the breach to secure and half further threats. Backup requested. This centaur will vanish after about 30 minutes but can help deliver further messages during that time.

She rolls up the parchment and ties it to the constellation. "Deliver this message to this man outside the mine," she says, drawing out an illusion of stars in the air that fade into Emerson's face. "Or a soldier. Whichever you can find first. Make haste, but take caution. Help deliver any further messages as they request."

The centaur bows and gallops away.

Sheemish cautiously moves to inspect the cavern, a number of questions on his mind. The first was if there were signs whether it was the kobold or the miners that opened the dead end into this area. Was this on purpose or by chance?

The second is how old the bridge and door are. If they are old or recent could shed light on why the kobold were here. Old could mean by chance, and recent could mean they meant to come this way. And were these even kobold made?

Sheemish's questions are good ones. His artificer's mind works quickly, noting details in the surroundings and piecing them together with what he knows about mines, kobolds, and architecture. It doesn't take him long to come to some conclusions.

Firstly, it seems apparent to him that this lava chamber is a natural one. The stone is old and covered in mineral layers, rather than chopped and broken like the walls of the mine. What's more, the bridge and door, while not made of the finest materials, are relatively new. Someone found this chamber, approved of it, and made themselves at home, all within the last several months.

Secondly, he's sure that the kobolds tunneled from this chamber into the mine, rather than the other way around. Though then the question arises, from where did the kobolds come? Is there another exit to the mountainside from here? Or did the kobolds come from somewhere deeper, perhaps a passage from the Underdark itself?

But even then he has an answer, for the bridge is made of wood. The miners certainly didn't build it, and where would creatures of the Underdark come across birch trees? As far as Sheemish knows, true wood is a rare commodity below the world's surface. Thus, there must be another exit to the surface nearby, almost certainly somewhere on the other side of the door.
Feb 6, 2023 10:40 pm
The kobold curls up into a scaley ball and sobs. Apparently Dieter was too harsh with it, having scared it witless. It may require a softer touch now to get any answers out of it.
Feb 6, 2023 10:43 pm
Dieter gets on one knee and rummages through his pack. He pulls out a bread puck from his ration pack and sprinkles some sugar he had been saving in a linen wrap on it "hey.. sorry I didn’t mean to spook you, do you want a cookie?" dieter extends one to the kobold and makes one for himself.
Feb 6, 2023 10:56 pm
The kobold's tail flips down from where it was covering its face, and it cracks open an eye. "Cookie?" Still not uncurling itself, it glances suspiciously at the offering in Dieter's hand.

"Yous kill mesa friends, and then gives cookie? ...Okay!" The kobold stretches out a thin claw to snag the cookie and pull it to its mouth. The cookie is never seen again, but the kobold does seem more comfortable now.
Feb 6, 2023 11:02 pm

Feb 7, 2023 11:42 pm
Runeson thinks back through what he knows of his own faith; Hoar is hardly a benevolent deity, and some of the god's history is dark. For example, he was once a servant of Bane, one of the most tyrannical gods to ever be worshipped in Faerun. Thus, Runeson's knowledge of evil and brutal faiths is not neglected, and he begins to put the pieces together.

Sea-Rike? That sounds awfully similar to... Cyric, the Black Sun!

Cyric is a ruthless, megalomaniacal god of chaos, murder, and lies. His worshippers stop at nothing to see his will done... though since none can agree on what his will is, the faithful turn on each other as often as accomplishing anything at all. Still, there are few Faerunian gods who encourage their clergy to such extremes of cruelty.

If the mastermind behind the troubles of the Nashkel Mines, this "Mule-a-hay", is truly a servant of Cyric, he could be very dangerous indeed.
Feb 8, 2023 4:40 am
I think we need to proceed with even more caution from here. If this Kobold's leader is a worshiper of Cyric then we are about to face someone not only cruel, but merciless as well. We shouldn't take this lightly. I then continue to answer any questions that my companions may have with what I may know, hopefully getting my warning across.

Peering through a pearl as if it were a lens, Stella analyzes the door and its glyph.

Through the pear, the door and glyph appears a night-sky blue outlined in stars. She focuses on the different stars of varying sizes and colors, each representing a node that connect to the Weave.

She peers into a small one. Divination... she mutters. a few stars branch of it. Proximity...biology...or life signature?

Then she peers into a much larger one. "Evocation...Lightning. A lot of it."

"I think it'll fire lightning at everyone nearby if anyone tries to pass through without being given permission. If we want to disable it, we'll need a stronger spellcaster or...someone to trigger it for us," she says bleakly. She thinks for a moment.

"If someone could trigger it then immediately teleport away, that might work. But it'd be risky."

Oh, so this was what Mom felt whenever Flureth did just about anything in the stories of her own adventures in Waterdeep. Why so concerned over assassins, if you're just going to turn around and throw your life away in the name of heroic sacrifice? Apparently this party's lack of survival sense was even worse than she'd thought from before coming inside the mine.

Aiwe opens the door.

There's an immediate crackle of magical energy and dozens of stinging sparks pop into existence around Aiwe. The nimble bard dodges this way and that, avoiding the worst of the killing spell, but when the sparks end her clothes and armor are covered in small burns, her dreads are standing on end, and her skin is severely blistered in several places.

"Ah, it's an elemental! That's right!" Stella says, not noticing Aiwë doffing her things. "It'll just get sent back to the---Aiwë wait. OUT OF THE WAY!!" She yelps to everyone as Aiwë approaches the door. She didn't know exactly how wide the lightning's reach would be, but she suspected it would be a huge area.

When all is said and done, Stella clenches her teeth and stomps up to Aiwë, taking herbs for burns out of her healer's kit. "Apparently that natural resilience comes with some natural senselessness..." she mumbles, then tries to tend to her friend's wounds.

On the other side of the door is a dark passage of some 30 feet, and then a lit chamber. There's a desk with papers visible, as well as a chair and part of a bookshelf, and the foot of a bed.

Those without darkvision can clearly see the furniture in the chamber at the end of the hall.

Those with darkvision can clearly see the four zombies in the hall starting to rise.

Everyone can hear a deep, harsh male voice from the far chamber:

"Brave, but foolish." A tall figure in plate armor steps around the corner and into view. For a moment, those present in the ambush outside Candlekeep are reminded of another armored figure. But this man is not he. Mulahey is not as tall as that other terror, and his armor bears no spikes. Still, he is an intimidating sight. "My work here is not finished, and you will not be the one's to stop it!"

The evil half-orc priest begins casting a spell!

With a wide grin, Aiwë holds obediently still for Stella's treatment. "I can't tell which of our four parents you sound most like when you talk like that," she says with obvious fondness for all five individuals in question.

Then she notices the movement. She thrusts Stella behind her and grabs her club.

"Nishrek entombs it's own god!" Aiwë chants again, more anger in her cry. "Our fate is our own!" The sound ripples outward into a wave that echoes through the cavern.

As the lightning dissipates, Sheemish’s night vision kicks in and he’s sees the dangers in the room. He also hears the beginning of a spell being cast.

Still jittery, Sheemish launches his own lightning but the bolts ricochet harmlessly down the hallway.

Round 1 Summary

The sounds of combat fill the dark passageway as battlecries and spell-chanting ring out over the moans and groans of the handful of zombies. Mulahey's magic-infused words seem to warp the air around him and scrabble madly at the minds of those who hear.

Dieter and Runeson charge forward, heedless of the undead around them - though if they were able to look closely, they'd see the once-human features and plain workclothes of Nashkel's missing miners. Dieter gets shoved hard against a wall by one zombie (Dieter takes 5 dmg) and his momentum nearly fails... but seeing Runeson beset by two more of the monsters gives him the motivation to recover. The young fighter pushes his way through the reaching arms and slams one of Runeson's opponents away with his shield, just barely keeping the paladin from suffering additional wounds (Dieter's Protection style turns one of the hits against Runeson into a miss. Runeson takes only 6 damage).

The two warriors are nearly trapped then, halfway through the passage, when Calliope wades gracefully into the mix and unleashes a wave of fire that for a moment looks like a great phoenix spreading its wings. Then, before any zombies can turn to grab at her, she disappears in a whirl of burning feathers, immolating the fingers of the closest monster.

A moment later the hallway shakes with thunderous power as Aiwe unleashes her thunderwave spell, blasting burning limbs off of zombies and hurling half of the creatures against a wall, making an opening for Dieter and Runeson to press on towards Mulahey. An arrow from Imoen sinks deeply into a zombie's eye, but hardly slows it down (Z4 takes 13 dmg). Stella's ice arrow is much more effective, burying itself so forcefully into the chest of one zombie that the entire monster turns to ice as it falls, and shatters into pieces on the stone ground (killed by a crit, Z1 doesn't rise again).

Dieter cries out in triumph as his sword flashes at Mulahey, but the evil priest doesn't even blink. Just before the fighter's blade would strike true, a fifth zombie shambles from around the corner and throws itself onto his weapon, sacrificing itself for its dark creator (Mulahey uses his reaction to Protective Thrall reaction, forcing the zombie to take Dieter's 1st hit instead). As Dieter stumbles under the weight of this new foe, Runeson steps up with shield and warhammer at the ready, standing toe-to-toe against Mulahey's ominous presence. The paladin strikes out, but Mulahey catches the weapon's haft in one gauntleted hand and raises an enormous morningstar in the other, ready to bring it crashing down on the unfortunate Runeson.

But Dieter has other plans. He calls on his reserves of stamina as he so often does, pushing himself to the limits of his physical body yet again to keep his friends safe. He kicks the zombie off of his sword and swings mightily at Mulahey's upraised hand, intercepting the blow meant for Runeson and destroying the gauntlet there. Mulahey cries out in pain and drops his morningstar to the floor with a clatter.

Unarmed, and with two capable warriors threatening him, the dark priest spits out the rest of his spell, a prayer to the Prince of Lies...

(Runeson and Dieter fail their Wisdom saves against Mulahey's Beguile legendary action)

And suddenly Dieter and Runeson find themselves back in the common room of the Nashkel Inn, sharing a drink with Mulahey. The amiable half-orc raises his mug in toast to the heroes' bravery. "Well done, my friends! You are the talk of the town, and rich besides!"

As Dieter and Runeson sway on their feet, caught up in Mulahey's magical charm, suddenly a second Mulahey appears just in front of the rest of the party, imposing and dark. "Fools! Did you think you could stand against me?" Sheemish's lightning leaps from his gauntlets, but he misses. "I've broken 'heroes' far stronger than you whelps." Mulahey casually flicks his finger toward Sheemish, and a conjured dart sinks into the artificer's neck. The small wound aches with poison (Mulahey's Cantrip legendary action, Sheemish takes 9 poison damage). "And now I'll slay all of you, and animate your corpses to guard this mine's secrets until your flesh falls off your bones! He waves a hand, and the remaining zombies form up beside and behind him.
Araklusta sent a note to Carcabob, deoelvenmage
Just then, Dieter and Runeson become aware of fighting behind them in the common room. They turn to see a handful of Nashkel's miners struggling to hold back a group of dwarven assassins, trying to keep them from the table where Dieter, Runeson, and Mulahey sit. Mulahey leans forward to draw the attention back to him. "With the mine working properly again, I'm sure you'll have the gratitude of both Baldur's Gate and Amn! You've restored order to the land, and prevented certain war."

The half-orc smiles, and the scene around them flashes back to reality for an instant, with their friends struggling for their lives in a dark tunnel far beneath the earth's surface. It lasts only a moment, however, and then Dieter and Runeson are back to having pleasant conversation in the warm and bright Nashkel Inn.

"What will you do now, heroes of the realm?"

OOC:
There are 2 Mulaheys, one (the green-marked one) right in front of Sheemish/Aiwe/Calliope/Stella/Imoen, and one (the red-marked one) on the far end of the passage in front of Dieter/Runeson.

So the 'green' zone is just in front of the majority of the party.
The 'yellow' zone is in the middle of the dark passage.
The 'red' zone is where Dieter and Runeson are.

Runeson and Dieter are both currently charmed by Mulahey, due a failed Wisdom saving throw, meaning that you CANNOT attack Mulahey, and he has advantage on Charisma checks against you. If you've got Inspiration or Lucky or whatever, you can roll that save again and try to pass it if you want! If you do, and you pass, you break out of the mental effect and can act normally. Currently, even with the failed save, you CAN see through the illusory effect on you well enough to attack the zombies. You just can't attack Mulahey this turn unless that failed saving throw somehow turns into a success. Make sense?

Oh! And ONE attack against Zombie 5 has advantage this turn. So somebody had better claim it, or Imoen will!

reality flashes and he sees his friends fighting for their life

Calliope runs past the sole zombie at the front as it engages far more opponents than it can handle, and then once again falls into what looks like a familiar rhythm to her. A blaze from her hands envelops the undead in front of her, a wreath of fire from the phoenix between them, and she's back where she started. Evidently a poke-and-retreat style she's trained a lot with, almost like a taunt to slower opponents.

(Moving into yellow zone to Burning Hands Zombie 3 and 2, which will unfortunately provoke from Z4, but it's a necessary sacrifice. Zombie 3 and 2 both take lethal damage. Fiery Teleportation to then teleport back once again.)

Stella draws a fire arrow and knocks it, feeling the intense heat on her hands. She could feel her connection to the heavens was waning, and she'd probably need all of her remaining power to keep allies on their feet.

"Ignore this one!" she tells those near her, gesturing her bow at the Mulahey near them. "Illusion."

She raises her bow and draws to fire at the real priest. Just as she's releasing her arrow, however, Dieter comes charging back their way right into her line of fire. She raises her bow at the last moment. Her arrow skids across the ceiling sending sparks and embers into the air before it clatters to harmlessly to the ground.

Round 2 Summary

Calliope darts forward again to repeat her fiery spell, and one of the zombies clubs her hard with its stump of an arm (Calliope takes 7 dmg). Its a heavy blow, but the eldadrin recovers and finishes her move set, returning to the rear of the party after unleashing her flames. Two charred zombies fall to the ground. One of them gets back up (Z3 passed its Undead Fortitude save and remains at 1 hp). Sometimes the undead are hard to keep down!

The zombie that clubbed Calliope turns toward Sheemish in a sudden, shambling rush! Just as it bites down hard on his forearm (Sheemish takes 9 dmg), Sheemish notices that he can just barely make out a charred nametag on its tunic: Jof. He manages to shove the monster away, then channels his lightning gauntlets down the passageway to hit Mulahey, who grunts heavily. Aiwe's thrown mallet collides with the evil priest next, hitting him squarely in the face. Mulahey spits out a broken tooth and eyes them both with hatred in his eyes, then casts a quick spell.

Sheemish manages to resist the crazed force intruding on his thoughts, but Aiwe suddenly notices that she's got a dead dwarf laid across her shoulders. She's standing outside the Nashkel Inn. Next to her, Mulahey drops his own dwarf corpse onto a pile before them, then flashes her a gap-toothed grin. "If Nishrek entombs its own god, why do you take such pleasure in spilling blood?" A spurt of red liquid leaves the gap in his smile and splatters across her face. "How many of our kind have you killed? How much orc-blood stains your hands?"

The dwarf on her back suddenly feels much heavier. And larger. Without even looking, she knows that it's now the body of an orc. Part of her wonders whose face it bears.

"What's this? What's going on?"

A small group of Amnish soldiers comes down the street, Major Bardolan at their head. "Halt and drop your weapons!" It's Bardolan's voice, but his mouth doesn't move, and his eyes shine black. He and the soldiers with him draw their weapons. "Murder most foul! Kill the she-orc!"

Mulahey is nowhere to be seen, but Aiwe can hear his breath and voice in her ear. "If your fate is your own, why do you do His work?"

Dieter lunges and drives his sword through the spine of the enemy before him. As the body slumps, he realizes he's slain one of the innocent miners... Then the madness leaves him entirely, and the zombie on his blade crumbles to the floor (Z3 dies and stays dead). As he's recovering from the shocking moment, Mulahey strides past and nearly backhands him with that wicked morningstar (now retrieved from the floor), but thankfully the young fighter has enough wits about him to duck away from the swing.

With the passageway lit by burning zombies and Stella's flame arrow, Mulahey continues down the passageway towards the bulk of the party. A powerful spell builds on his blood-spattered lips, and suddenly impenetrable blackness takes the sight of Dieter, Sheemish, and Calliope (Failed saves against Blindness).
[ +- ] Blindness/Deafness
The spell nearly overcomes Stella too, but the stars in her eyes shine brighter than the priest's darkness. With Aiwe's mind in another world, and her other companions stumbling about blind, Stella stands alone against Mulahey and his remaining undead.

Nearly alone. One of the shambling zombies sprouts an arrow from its forehead (Z5 takes 12 dmg and dies), and Imoen steps up next to Stella. The pink-haired girl's face is streaked with dirt and blood, and her eyes shine with a mixture of fright and determination; she won't abandon her friends. And beyond Mulahey, Stella sees Runeson shake his head, clearing away the remnants of whatever madness had gripped him (Runeson is no longer charmed by Mulahey, and so can act normally).

Mulahey raises a hand to Stella and conjures another poison dart. She dodges it!

Dieter, Sheemish, and Calliope are blind! That's disadvantage on attack rolls you make, advantage on attacks against you, and obviously you can't SEE anyone to target them with spells that require sight.

Aiwe is charmed by Mulahey and can't attack him. She can still attack the zombie though!

Anyone who failed a saving throw last round can spend Inspiration, Luck, whatever they might have to reroll the save and throw off the effect!

Runeson has returned to normal and can take 2 turns!

Mulahey isn't *quite* next to Stella yet, so not engaged in melee combat for the moment.

"Pleasure!" Aiwë spits. "I wrote the songs that are sung at their funerals! We fight for every single Blood." She raises her shield against the illusion, searching for the true danger. "But you obviously know nothing about us, or you'd know that argument is old and boring!"

It is. Both Keggruk and Gruumsh himself once threw such words at Alalla. Even so, as Shelur looks desperately for the sight of truth, she finds a burning anger growing in her gut.

Aiwë takes the dodge action.

Darkness and Pain. Again. Just like before.

Except this time there was something different. Something that Aiwe and Dieter had said. And something Ug had taught him that he had almost forgotten down here.

There was darkness and pain, but last time he was alone throughout it. this time he had friends You can take sight and light and wholeness and confidence and purpose away. But not friends.

Stitch Sheemish taps and pulses through his gauntlets. Guide me! A distinct pulse is felt ahead and Sheemish trusts and takes aim in the blackness. Please hit true the blacksmith wishes to himself. He unleashes two charged beacons of lightning, invisible in his current state. He can only hope he didn’t hit a friend.

Stella backpedals, dodging acid and trying keep away from the zombies and priest. She flinches at Imoen's deadly shot, then glances to her and nods, relieved and grateful.

Sheemish deals a devastating blow that sends the priest reeling. An enraged Runeson follows up for a certain death-blow.

Except...Orc blood, she realizes, hearing Aiwë's rebuttal to some illusion of the mind. Like these zombies, orcs had a habit of shrugging off certain death.

She drops her arrow and draws her bow, forming an arrow out of ethereal stardust. It wasn't strong, but it could pierce armor, and that's all she needed.

Round 3 Summary

The flickering flames from discarded zombie limbs paint Mulahey like some living avatar of his crazed god. Plated in his dark armor, and with loyal Jof at his side, he advances on Stella.

Stella's stardust arrow pierces through his pauldron, but Mulahey just crumbles the arrow to ash in his gauntlet, then swings his morningstar with sudden fury. The druidess barely gets her buckler up in time to block, but it provides only the most meager protection against this foe; the vibration sent through her arm is nearly enough tear the limb from its socket (Stella takes 5 dmg).

Before Mulahey can press the advantage and finish Stella off, a small golden Stitch flits past his helmet, followed by the sound of Sheemish's guantlets charging up. Just in time, Mulahey whirls and grabs Jof in one hand and hurls the zombie at the artificer (Mulahey uses his Protective Thrall reaction to change the target of Sheemish's crit to Jof). Sheemish's lightning blasts the unfortunate Jof to pieces (The crit for sure kills Jof), and the backlash causes the artificer to turn his leg at a bad angle (Sheemish takes 5 dmg).

Mulahey doesn't have a chance to recover from the near-disaster, as Runeson hammers him twice in the back (Mulahey takes both of Runeson's hits, as the zombie's no longer a valid target). The evil priest stumbles down to one knee and lets out a cry of anger and pain. Insidious power accompanies the cry, bursting out of him like black water from a geyser. Fortunately, the nearest heroes keep the presence of mind to duck away from the unholy sound and are not adversely affected (Sheemish, Calliope, and Runeson pass their Dex saves and take no dmg). Still, it gives Mulahey the moment he needs to find his feet.

"This isn't a fight you'll win! I will have your heads on pikes, and Cyric will favor me for my deeds in his name!" He drags his morningstar across the stone floor, striking up a line of sparks, then whips the weapon around and slams it into Stella's side. "And you will be the first, girl!" the half-orc spits. Calliope and Dieter find their sight returned just in time to see the half-elf's body slide to the floor, blood seeping from several massive spike wounds (Stella takes 11 dmg and is dying).

Sheemish is still blind as Mulahey whirls to face the rest of the party. Aiwe finds her mind clear once more.

Mulahey's morningstar hits her like a charging owlbear. Stella falls unconscious before she even hits the ground.

Stella screams and holds tight as Zenithral jumps off the flaming branch of the Great Oak.

After a few seconds, her Papa's eyes alight with radiance and spectral wings sprout from his back, catching the air and turning the fall into a swooping glide.

"Why did you jump first?" Stella yells at him, eyes held tightly closed as the wind rushes by.

"Well that simply wouldn't be as exciting, my dear," the half-elven aasimar says with a grin. He notices her terrified expression and his grin fades. "I'm sorry...I was...caught up in the moment...But you have to admit, this is indeed a rather spectacular view?"

Still hugging tightly to her father, Stella hesitantly opens her eyes to the open night sky, painted with stars and completely unobscured by neither landscape nor leaves, a masterpiece that spanned this existence, and perhaps beyond...

Zenithral's daughter wakes with staggered breath and choked tears. For the second time today, her eyes flitter open to see Aiwë. The warrior hands Stella the fallen bow and pulls her to her feet while their allies fend off the crazed priest.

Stella brushes a lock of bloodied white hair out of her face. With trembling but determined hands, she draws back the string, forming another, far more radiant arrow of stardust. With trembling hands, she fires, but the arrow sails past harmlessly and fizzles out.

Round 4 Summary

Mulahey roars in anger as Stella rises, wounds healing. Before he can focus any ire on her or Aiwe, however, he's assaulted on all sides by the rest of the party. He parries, he blocks, he accepts glancing blows, barely keeps from being set aflame, but for all his effort he only manages to wound one hero, Runeson, with a blast of poison magic (Runey-boy takes 13 poison dmg).

Breathing heavily, blood pouring from many wounds, the half-orc priest begins another spell, one that warps the air with spirits of darkness and malevolence. It looks to be a powerful conjuring, one meant to rain destruction all about him.

"No! I won't let you hurt anyone else!" The cry comes from Imoen. The slight, pink-haired girl drops her bow and jumps forward, hand fumbling around in her cloak for something. Mulahey looks on her with eyes turned black with fell power, sure to rip her soul from her body for her insolence.

But Imoen finds what she's looking for. She pulls out the wand she "borrowed" from some wizard in Candlekeep and points the end up at Mulahey's face. "Take THIS!"

Nothing happens, and Mulahey chuckles darkly, reaching for the girl with his gauntleted hand. Imoen holds the wand with both hands and tries again, tears of anger and desperation falling from her eyes.

"GAH!!!"

The wand lights up, the red gem on the end flares to life, and a stream of crimson lights blasts from it, each one slamming into Mulahey with deadly force (Imoen expends every charge in the wand to cast Magic Missile as a 7th-level spell). Armor dents, bones crack, and Mulahey wheezes as the air is smashed from his lungs. Magical protections fizzle and fail, and not even the resilience that orc-kind is known for is enough to save the evil priest. The magic hurls him against the wall, cracking the stone, and when finally the stream of magic ends, his body falls limp and broken to the floor (Mulahey takes 34 force damage and dies).

Imoen falls to a sit, exhausted, and then flops onto her back, breathing heavily and staring at the ceiling.

The fight is over.

"I'm going to set a magical alarm on the other side of the bridge. It'll wave and alert me if anyone's coming. Can someone come with me?" she says once wounds have been treated.

If no one opposes and if someone joins, she makes her way to the side of the bridge they came from and sets up an alarm, wincing and grunting in pain as she walked and started waving her fingers and chanting arcane commands.

She had seen death's door twice today. She couldn't decide if it was strengthening or traumatizing. Perhaps it was both, she thought.

Papa mentioned bits of life flashing before his eyes each time he neared death. It was a strange experience. Sometimes terror. Sometimes comfort.

She would need to be smarter in the future. Papa taught her battlefield tactics, but it was completely new experience seeing it in practice. Until now, she had really only saw it as theory, as Aiwë put it.

It was becoming much more.

When the attitude of the group shifts to spending the night, Aiwë quickly puts Mulahey back down. A little too quickly. She throws his blanket over him and runs to catch up with Stella.

"Here—breathe slow and deep, good breathing helps with pain. And make your movements slow and fluid. I don't think the spell will mind if you cast it like a dance." Shelur mimics Stella as she casts, humming to the spell's 'lyrics' and moving in a sort of waltz. "That's a great spell. Can Uncle Zen do those?"

Sheemish’s eyesight and hearing return and he sees the aftermath of the battle. Heavily injured and exhausted he takes a mental inventory

senses, fixed
Stitch, fixed
Armor? He looks at his armor again and gets a better understanding of the malfunction. Simple overheating. Fixable.
Mental state? Not too good. Even with the help of friends and motivating words, They are still down here in this wretched place (which they should probably have to rest in). He had momentarily lost stitch, his equipment, and his senses. And now they had picked up a new companion . . .

Sheemish’s left arm aches and his fingers feel numb. With Stella setting an alarm, the artificer distances himself from the group and inspects the new rooms they found. There had to be some other kind of entrance or exit on this side and that would most likely need an alarm as well when they rest.

Feb 18, 2023 5:34 pm
Sheemish's exploration of the rest of Mulahey's rooms yields several new developments.

There's a rather nice desk with some papers on it. The artificer's keen eye quickly picks out a diagram of the mine, some reports on the mine's progress, and some alchemical formulas. And two letters written in bold handwriting, rather different than Mulahey's spidery script.

The exit is easy enough to find, a couple of chambers back, and sure enough, it empties out onto the mountainside. From the outside it's well-hidden, and Sheemish doubts that any but the most determined outdoorsman would have been able to spot it.

As he makes his way back through the rooms, the artificer notices something he somehow missed on his first pass: a prisoner. The elf is quite bruised, and his wrists are severely chafed from the manacles suspending him from the wall. His breathing comes in ragged gasps, slightly blowing the long dark hair over his face, but he's so still he must be unconscious. His robes - once a deep purple with fine silver embroidery, is torn in several places and stained with mud and blood.

"Arranis! I love that guy!" Aiwë had been around for a few of his visits. Her parents always scolded her for harassing him with her intentionally-orcish-accented elvish, though she knew her mother did the same. Still, he is a living relic, and Aiwë had been eager to learn what she could drag out of him. "You know he taught me a poem?" Finally, when she presented perfect elvish and completely innocently recounted a few stories of Ilmadia searching for knowledge of her heritage from forbidden places within his earshot.

"Want me to sing it for you?" She catches sight of Sheemish separating himself from the group. "Oh, maybe I should sing for Sheemish. You got this, Sister-Girl!" She jogs off.

"Hey Sheemish! Are you—" She stops next to him just as he finds the elf. "Oh... Oh no."

Sheemish's strong and clever fingers quickly open the manacles, causing the elf to slump forward onto the blacksmith. With a hand from Aiwe, they soon have him laid out on a blanket, and then Stella begins her healing work.

The elf's pale face makes his bruises look even darker, but it's the deep cuts on arms and legs that draw her attention. She's recently cleaned up similar wounds on Dieter and the others, and recognizes the marks of kobold weapons. The bloody knot on the back of his head, though, must have been delivered by Mulahey, or someone of equal strength.

"...hollow life..." the elf murmurs, eyelids flickering. "A hollow...life..."

After Stella finishes her healing work, the elf sighs and opens his eyes, his gray-green eyes focused on Stella's. "In the dark of the night, I dream of morning, of sunshine on my face. Yet now dawn's light heralds warming, I miss the stars' embrace."

He looks about to pass out again, but then his eyes open wide and he sits halfway up. "The dark priest? Where is he?"

All need for sleep leaves Dieter as he rushes off to investigate the cries for help. While seeking to help Dieter is suspicious of the elf. "What’s your name and why are you here?"
Feb 19, 2023 12:21 am
Aiwë repeats his words under her breath, fascinated.

"Relax, Diets." She waves in his direction, not taking her eyes off the elf. "Mulahey? He's dead. But over there, specifically." She gestures to where he lies under his blanket.

The elf groans and leans back onto the blanket. "Thank Corellon, my time of doom has passed... for now."

His eyes drift to Dieter. "I could ask the same of you, but as I am no longer bound and my wounds are cared for, I would suppose you benevolent wherever you might be from. I am called Xan Blacksheaf. I was looking into suspicions in the region when I was ambushed by Mulahey and his kobold lackies."

Xan's gaze searches the room. "I don't suppose in your explorations of this dark place that you've discovered an elvish sword? A moonblade, to be exact... If you have, I ask that you return it to me. You'll quickly find it will have no other bearer anyway, and so will serve you little."
Feb 19, 2023 10:58 pm
Aiwë jumps up, gasping loudly. "I'm Aiwë Blacksheaf! My father is Erevain Blacksheaf! You and I are cousins!!" Her tuskish grin is a mile wide. "By the Seldarine! I had hoped to meet you since travelling south, but didn't expect to encounter you like this!"

um okay Dieter thought at the elf’s rebuttal. But Dieter knew that people with too much confidence either A) knew exactly what they’re talking about and that he was too novice to comprehend their skill and understanding or B) their death was going to be quick and easy. Option B is only the case if you did not act as though it was true as playing with your food always kills you. "I am Dieter son of Tulfgar son of Tulfgyr."
Feb 20, 2023 4:39 pm
"We haven't found such a sword, no," Stella says, making sure his bandages are all in place, and checking for signs of disease. Her eyes widen and she looks to Aiwë at the sound of Blacksheaf.

After their exchanges, she asks, "How long have you been down here, and how and why were you captured?"
Feb 20, 2023 5:59 pm
It takes Xan a long moment of rubbing the back of his head before he seems to understand Aiwë's words. He sits up fully and peers at her, taking in her eyes, her ears, her jawline. Her teeth. And then he groans so hard the companions would be forgiven for thinking him still in great pain. "Oh Erevain, you've sent your girl to die here in these forsaken lands?"

His hand, nearly so pale as to appear blue, passes over his eyes and he releases a heavy sigh. "Woe that these days should be mine, to guard over and fail my own cousin's daughter! And my moonblade, lost!" He locks sorrowful eyes with Aiwë. "When your last breath rattles with death's chill, then will my cousin know his folly to trust in one such as I..."

Xan turns to Dieter. "And you, doomed sapling... It grieves me to see the fresh green of life hewn down before it has a chance to bud." He squints. "You're not my cousin, too, are you? Ah! Then you have truly been blessed this day, for my ancestral line is cursed to care too much and fail always. Flee while you can, young Dieter!"

And then to Stella. "A rose by any other name yet dies in trembling silence when cut and removed from its home. Return, I pray, to whatever star-blessed land raised such a beauteous woman, before the fate of those embarked on this vain quest also claims your life."

He sinks back, eyes focused on nothing. "Alas, my moonblade, may you find a bearer more worthy than I! One deserving of your great magical power. For without the strength to search about for you in this cave, I must lay here and relinquish my life to whatever awaits beyond the mortal veil... Farewell!"

The strange elf closes his eyes and begins snoring lightly.
Feb 20, 2023 6:21 pm
"Wow!" Aiwë laughs. "My dad said Xan was a lot. He wasn't kidding!" She seems delighted. "Better let him sleep and get some rest ourselves. First I'm going to look for that sword though. I think moon blades are sentient, I wonder if it misses him as much as Xan misses it."

Aiwë pulls out her bedroll and lifts Xan into it, then goes off to search for the blade.

"Relax, Diets," Aiwë laughs, pushing Mulahey's desk out of its spot. "He's just dramatic. If a depressed guy's ramblings are enough to shake your guys' confidence then he isn't the problem. Also, this guy is the first elven relation I've met. Torm, he might even be the only one I have." Straightening, she points at Dieter.

"Don't blow this for me."
Feb 20, 2023 7:21 pm
Xan doesn't seem to hear Dieter's words, but it's hard to say with elves.

It doesn't take long for Aiwë to find the missing sword. There's a long chest under Mulahey's bed, containing the moonblade - a wondrous weapon! - a cloak and matching pair of boots, another sword, and a large sack of gold.

She also remembers to collect Mulahey's fallen morningstar, guessing rightly that it must possess some sort of enchantment.
OOC:
Morningstar
The moonblade itself is of exquisite, almost otherworldy design. Indeed, fashioned long ago by the elves of Myth Drannor, it is one of the rarest weapons in all of Faerun. Such blades are rumored to be sentient, and have a habit of choosing their owners from long lines of elven nobility, staying with their chosen family for thousands of years.

"Guys! Check out all this stuff! Oh, wow!" Aiwë reverently picks up the moonblade. From what her father told her, it was almost as much a part of her family as he or Xan.

"Hello?" Aiwë tries to reach out to the sword emotionally. She quietly hums the song Arranis 'taught' her as she waits for a response, carefully polishing any dust, dirt, or blood from its length. Had Erevain been like this, when he was in his sword?

"What do you mean relax this isn’t funny he could die? And he’s bumming everyone out! It’s a good thing we have Stella here or we would be checking his boot size right now."
Feb 20, 2023 7:47 pm
Shelur tosses Dieter a sharp glance. "You're not leaving my cousin here, Dieter." She returns to the moonblade and ignores him.
Feb 20, 2023 9:13 pm
Aiwë's careful efforts to communicate with the moonblade are met by an immediate force of will, a patience beyond what any living creature might claim, lashing out to ensnare her mind and make her its slave... But just before the domination takes hold, the sword's consciousness hesitates. Aiwë isn't the one it was expecting. A resonating ping sounds throughout her mind and body as the moonblade examines her, searching her thoughts, her soul, her blood.

There are no actual words in the weapon's actions, only raw intent. Aiwë can't help but feel that if the sword were an actual person, it would be more strict than any of Candlekeep's guardians. Strict... or perhaps opinionated.

It quickly discovers her elven lineage, and Aiwë feels a sense of approval reflecting back to her as it traces her family line to its current bearer. But then... mild discontent, followed by a sweeping rage. Blue flames race across the blade and into the pommel, flickering across Aiwë's hands and burning them harshly (Aiwe takes 10 dmg, a mix of fire and radiant).

Apparently the moonblade doesn't like that its chosen family line, its noble elvish household, has bred with orcs.

Aiwë curses loudly, dropping the sword and shaking her hands to soothe the burns. "Oh yeah! My orcish line helped kill their own god and liberate an entire people! Best thing a blooded-Blacksheaf ever did was provide moral support!" The rational part of her immediately feels terrible for the undeserved slight on her father and his family, but mostly she only feels her own sweeping rage. She pulls back a foot to kick the sword all the way over to Xan.

She hesitates, foot wavering with a conflict of will. Xan noticed her lineage, she's sure he did. He hasn't expressed opinion yet, but he might if she does her best to dent his prized moonblade on every stone between here and where he lies in trance. Her father always saw everything when he tranced.

"Ugh!" Shelur shrieks with irritation, then sits sharply with her back to the sword, staring glumly at the burns on her hands.

Runeson's quiet arrival startles her. "Oh! Thank you. It was quite a burn from a nasty sword." She squeezes his hands in thanks and brightens somewhat. "Now I can play again." She pulls out her lyre and begins to play her father's favourite lullabies, her brow still uncharacteristically creased.

"…I feel like we are talking about two different things let’s just get rested and get out of here " Dieter says closing the subject. He feels the Longsword in his hand and tests its balance. "This is a fine blade forged with love and care" luckily his experience with this sword is much better than Aiwë’s with her ancestral relic. "That one might have been crafted with…different techniques" Dieter walks over to her and tries a little dance from home with a similar beat to her lullaby though Dieter has never danced to a lullaby before.

Stella shivers at the bleakness in his oration. "Are you sure you're related?" she asks Aiwë after he falls asleep.

After setting up wards and identifying each item through her pearl, she eyes the longsword with suspicion as Dieter wields it, then eyes the morningstar. Both were magically sharper and lighter, but the sword required the wielder to attune to it to feel the benefits. Was one just a more refined enhancement than the other?

Stella's reasoning is spot-on. The longsword is certainly a cursed weapon, waiting to ensnare anyone who attunes to it. The nature of the curse is uncertain, but there are plenty of stories of men and women gone berserk holding a strange weapon, slaughtering friends and family in a fit of curse-induced rage.

Mulahey was a priest of a crazed and cruel god. What plans might he have had for such a sword?
Feb 21, 2023 2:43 am
Restored to good cheer by her Runeson's care and Dieter's dance, Aiwë finishes pouting.
Quote:
"Are you sure you're related?"
"Oh yeah," she grins. "Ada was super mopey before he died. I've read his journals. Not as bad as Xan," she admits, "but did you hear his poetry?" Clearly the bleakness of his words is not what stuck out to her.

Aiwë grabbed Mulahey's pillow and carefully scooped the moonblade up with the pillowcase. "And this thing probably got my family through centuries during which it's... opinions were well-founded and kept the Blacksheaf line alive." She regarded it in its cotton prison. "Its unfortunate to be crafted with a trait that served so well, and is becoming so irrelevant." Her face bears both a sorrowful look for the tragic and romantic fate of the sword, and also a glint of spite.

She walks to Xan and lays it next to him within reach. "Your sword, Cousin Xan," she says quietly, then leaves him to his rest.

"Deiter," she says. She starts to stand but the pain in her ribs flares up and she opts to stay seated. "I think it's cursed. Ironically, I don't think the morningstar is. It's certainly not as elegant, but its—" she winces, "—just as deadly. Best leave the sword here. Unless Sheemish thinks it could be smelted down? I don't know if I'd trust whatever it gets made into though."

"Take these, though," she says, about to toss the boots. She stops and simply holds them out to avoid more pain. "They make no sound when you move, which might come in handy."

"Runeson," she calls. "Do you want this cloak? While the cowl is up, it provides exceptional camouflage and muffle the sound of your armor in you ever need to stay unseen."

His weapons useless and his will near breaking, another set of instincts take over, a set Sheemish had been trying failing to avoid. There were many memories of the past he had wished to block and abandon forever. Painful memories. Dark Memories. And Dark Words.

"Gesthrisj!" he shouts to Stitch. The little construct zips up higher for a better view of the Archer and fires a burst of energy. A vibration and a grunt indicate a direct though small hit.

Raising his left hand above his head, Sheemish clenches it into a fist. "Arirlim, Ixem!" Sheemish spits the words out in a hiss, but the effects are instantaneous.

Fire erupts from stone boulders in front of the Archer. Though it is not close enough to inflict damage, the heat and the smoke may still be enough to obscure their enemy's vision and force him to move.

Stitch deals 3 thunder damage. Sheemish casts bonfire on the boulders the archer is using for cover.

Stella's relieved to see Dieter keep moving. The arrow must not have hit deep.

Or, like Aiwë, Dieter's body was as sturdy as he was foolish.

Stella strides out of the doorway just enough to see the archer, then fires an arrow of ice with frost training behind it like a comet. Then, without waiting to see if it hits, ducks back inside, out of view. The arrow shoots past the enemy archer, then falls back down right on top of it, bursting into a cloud of frost, chilling his bones.

(Archer takes 6 cold damage and has disadvantage on its first attack next round.)

Several find their mark, and the archer ducks back with a grunt of pain. Imoen's arrow finds him next, as the clever girl strafes around to one side. Finally, Sheemish complicate things further for the enemy with the conjured bonfire.

His voice comes down the mountainside suddenly. "Hold! H-" He coughs in the smoke given off by Sheemish's spell. "You're too many for me to take, but for sure I'd bring one or two of you down with me. Do you want to risk that? Why don't we just settle this like civilized people?"

Sheemish shouts in draconian for stitch to find help before diving for whatever cover he can (outside, not inside the cave, Sheemish definitely does not want to go back in there)

Focused on Runeson, Stella doesn't notice the boulders. Sheemish's warning however, gives her just enough time to leap back into the doorway, though battered and bruised even more.

She was getting dizzy, despite the adrenaline. She didn't want to put herself in more harm, but Mayor Ghastkill would probably kill some of them if they didn't take him down fast. He was given the opportunity to stand out and he denied it. This was what Aiwë had called "choosing death".

She shrugs off her bow and steps out from the doorway, drawing a fire arrow, loosing it straight at the mayor now without the boulders in the way, then stepping back under cover.

Running very low on options, Sheemish smashes his right gauntlet against a stone next to him breaking a piece of the bracers off. He bends it quickly in his hands and then hurls it at the mayor. The makeshift boomberang makes contact and the bounces off and returns to Sheemish’s outstretched hand.

Sheemish does in fact own a boomerang, this just puts it in context ; ) mayor takes 4 bludgeoning damage.

Meanwhile, stitch has darted off looking for reinforcements.

Round 2 Summary

The fiery boulders come tumbling down the mountain, but thanks to Sheemish's warning none of the party are struck badly. And their retaliation is swift. Ghastkill manages to get in one blow with his shortsword (Runeson takes 10 damage), but then he is brought low by the party's combined efforts, and his body tumbles down the slope to just in front of the entrance.

The man moves - just barely clinging to life. He will certainly die on his own, but should the party wish to get any answers from him...

Stella flinches she sees the body tumble to a half. She steps out of the doorway stiffy over to him, grunting in pain as she goes.

"Lady of Mystery, help us learn what we need from him."

Out of bandages, she kneels down, cuts some cloth from her own travel skirt and tries to staunch the bleeding, but it doesn't seem to do any good. She couldn't remove the arrows...that'd only make things worse. Her eyes widen as she starts to panic.

Stella, exhausted by the day's ordeals (and those of the previous week as well!), is nearly overwhelmed by it all as she works to stabilize the mayor. It isn't until Runeson joins her in the work that she's able to come to herself and focus on the task at hand. He's often quiet, but the paladin just has that effect on the people around him.

Always quick to spot things that may be useful for later, the others note and retrieve the mayor's longbow. It's of obviously fine craftsmanship, and may be magical besides.
OOC:
Ghastkill's Longbow
In short order Ghastkill's worst injuries are treated. Off in the west, towards the Sea of Swords, the sun begins its to disappear behind the nearest mountain peaks. It will soon be night.
Feb 27, 2023 9:07 pm
Stella heaves what a sigh of relief mixed with a groan of pain.

She gives Runeson a weak smile. "Thanks," she says simply. The simple word carried a lot of gratitude. The paladin had stood up to protect her in the tavern and now he was supporting her here. He looked well-practiced, almost more than she was—she was used to magical herbs doing most of the work.

She looks to the setting sun. Did it really take them all day? She shouldn't have given Minsc the idea that they would be able to help—not until she was certain. Perhaps they could set off to help...tomorrow? Adrenaline fading again, Stella's exhaustion sets in once more.

"Should we go back inside and tie him up to rest?" she asks. "Or we could use the shackles..."
OOC:
Unless plans change, before resting, Stella will:
- Set an audible Alarm ward around where we leave Ghastkill
- Cast Identify on the bow
- Cast Goodberry with her last spell slot

"Shackles," Aiwë agrees grimly.
Feb 28, 2023 2:17 am
Sheemish looks towards the shackles back in the cave and shudders but nods.

Glancing at Aiwe he gives a very exausted and forced half grin

"Was this what you had in mind when you dreamed of adventuring?" His shoulders slump as he sits and leans back against a rock at the opening. "Not trying to cause any more problems, but I would prefer to rest out here." Its not a question, more of a resigned statement. The tired blacksmith is pretty sure he would not gain any rest back in that nightmarish place.

"This way Stitch can alert me when she returns as well." And with that Sheemish closes his eyes, wondering if Ug ever felt this tired.
Feb 28, 2023 2:38 am
The tired group returns to their much-needed rest in Mulahey's lair.
OOC:
Long rest COMPLETED
It's very late, sometime around midnight, that Stitch returns. She comes flitting along from the passage to the mine, leading a dozen Amnian soldiers behind her.

The companions, just about feeling like maybe they wouldn't mind another adventure or two after all, hear the soldiers coming from far off, and are already formed up in case these newcomers turn out to be foes.
Feb 28, 2023 2:38 am
Stitch happily reunites with Sheemish, spinning around the artificer before running a diagnostic on his worn equipment.

Major Bardolan strides forward, dressed in his fine armor. "I suspected that little creature belonged to your party." He wipes sweat from his brow. "Persistent little blighter. I couldn't figure out what it wanted at first, but when it seemed to want us to follow it into the mine we assumed the worst and called together a proper squad."

The seasoned knight takes in the nearest of Mulahey's furniture and decorations. "Care to explain just what's happened here?"

Aiwë pats Sheemish on the back.

"Fighting angry priests and taking war prisoners? Nah. I thought I was getting away from all that."

At the Major's arrival Aiwë steps forward. This is going to be... delicate.

"A man named Mulahey, a priest of Cyric, has been running an operation down here to poison the ore. He was working for someone else, and using kobolds for his operation. We've got one here, Snog'snoot, who we got some information from." Aiwë passes the Major the letters they found, as well as their samples of the ore poison.

"Major Bardolan, I'm afraid we found someone else down here as well. While we were trying to recover from our battles, Mayor Ghastkill came to speak with Mulahey. When he found out Mulahey was dead, he tried to kill us."

The priest is dead," Aiwë says bluntly, pointing to the body-shaped lump under a blanket. For the mayor, she is more gentle. "We subdued Ghastkill. He's in the next room. I'm... sure you realize this throws a different light on the situation with his brother."

Without hesitation the major pulls back the blanket to reveal the half-orc's battered corpse and scowls at it for a moment.

Several of the soldiers gasp, and Bardolan closes his eyes solemnly and takes a deep breath. "If you will excuse me, Aiwe, I need to speak with the mayor."

So I just realized that I meant to have you guys talk to Ghastkill first, if you wanted to, during the rest. If you do, please put that in purple here. Otherwise you'll probably also want to ask him questions at the same time Bardolan does, and that sounds like a headache.

Stella takes a look at Ghastkill's longbow. It's design is a bit different from what she's seen before; probably of Amnian make. It also bears a minor enchantment to improve its aim and strength.

Quote:
What actually happened with your brother?
As far as the people of Nashkel are concerned, Commander Brage was the most loved and respected Amnian man north of the Cloud Peaks. He was born and raised in the town, then joined the Amnian army. He grew quickly through the ranks, until he was appointed to his hometown Nashkel and its iron mine to defend against any incursions from Baldur's Gate. Some say that his brother Berrun only became mayor because Brage himself couldn't accept the position, so the people installed the next best man (in their eyes) for the job. At the time, Berrun was grateful for the appointment, but as he himself grew in authority and power, he grew resentful that his brother, the beloved and successful Commander Brage, had more.

The canker of jealousy grew. By the time the first miner disappeared, Berrun couldn't stand to be in the same room as his brother, but in any confrontation with him the townsfolk sided with Brage. When Berrun went down into the mine to investigate the missing miner and instead found Mulahey and his kobolds, the half-orc priest easily divined Berrun's character and saw he was nearly ready to murder Brage himself. For Berrun's continued silence about Mulahey's presence in the mine, Mulahey promised to help dispose of Commander Brage in a way that couldn't be traced back to Berrun.

Shortly thereafter, a dark-skinned woman visited Mulahey and brought him a certain cursed sword. Mulahey lent it to Berrun, who 'gifted' it to Brage. Then poor Brage, driven made by the cursed sword's influence, murdered his own family. Berrun planned to capture Brage and have him executed, but Brage escaped and fled into the wilds. Since then, Berrun has been hunting his brother, to put him down and end him.
Quote:
Who else knows about this operation?
There was the dark-skinned woman. She may have been an elf, but what would a lone drow be doing scheming with the likes of Mulahey? Perhaps she was a human.

Stella decided to sleep outside with Sheemish, under the stars.

They acted like a warm blanket, helping her sleep surprisingly well, despite the physical trauma from the previous day. She had dreams littered with flashes of fire and the dark priest's morningstar smashing into her, but they were brief and faded as she slept. In fact...she couldn't feel any lingering injury. No cracked ribs or otherwise. Her druidic powers were definitely growing stronger, she concluded.

She spends part of the morning tallying up gold and planning future expenses. She needed special inks if she were to finally learn and copy Bently's spells from his spellbook. Perhaps she could also finally learn some spells she rapidly copied down during her time in Candlekeep.

She approaches Calliope. "I guess this means we've solved the Iron Crisis? At least the immediate issue. Will you be...meeting up with Mr...Gemini and leave now?" she asks.

Stella liked having Calliope around, especially for her sense of practicality. Her magic was very helpful too.

"Whoever Muhaley works for might not be done with this..." she muses. "I wonder what he had to gain...and if they're related to whoever's in Baulder's Gate hiring assassins." She pauses. "Where is Mr. Gemini anyway? And the creeps Xzar and Montaron for that matter...those two seemed pretty eager to get here as fast as possible. Then again, if they had, maybe they didn't...well...make it," she says grimly, glancing towards the mine tunnels.

"Anyway! she exclaims. "We...did good here...didn't we?" It's clear Stella still isn't comfortable with the idea of killing, but seems to be grasping that this is what being a "hero" might involve.

Calliope shakes her head. "Not Mr. Gemini; he has... likely further business to attend to; I don't know where he is. But you're right we'll be leaving. And if the crazy creeps died on the way, all the better for their future victims."

"And... yeah. We- you, did good here." Calliope corrects the word to make sure it's clear to Stella she's not just referring to herself.

And then with a snap, her wings and dress of feathers melt into a robe of black streaked with ash, her black hair grows longer into silver, covered partially by an ash-covered hat the same shade as her robes; the very picture of a fire-loving wizard in training. She stands up, snapping shut a spellbook that had been a journal just a moment earlier.

"I, on the other hand, didn't have anything to do with it. Must have been that Calliope girl, yeah?" She winks. This must be what she had been talking about before, wearing different faces. "Try to... teach the rest of them a little more sense to go with their heroics." Her expression softens just momentarily to show her exasperation and concern with Stella being the only level head in the group, and wishing her luck with it.

"I'll be around. Or not." A shrug, and a smirk. "If I'm good, you'll never know if I was."

"It?" Stella asks incredulously, tilting her head towards Dieter. "It sounds like she, she emphasizes, tucking some hair behind her ear, "really was just here for the mines, yes. As for me, I'm sticking with Aiwë and Sheemish at the very least. I would like to help Minsc, though. I hope it's not too late..." she says, looking towards the rising sun.

First Rift and Kay, and...whatever the weapon called itself. Not Bert. That was the zombie...Anyway... she thinks. Then Wirrow, and now Calliope...They sure had a lot of people moving in and out of their group. It was probably for the best, with assassins after them and all. She wondered who would be next to leave. Imoen? Runeson? Dieter?

Stella clutches her tome to her chest and turning back to Dieter.

"Would you be willing to come help save a 'witch' from some gnolls?" she asks the young warrior. Her eye-stars were a sprinkled mix of a hopeful green and uncertain blue.

Bardolan makes no effort to keep his conversation with the mayor private. He asks many of the same questions the party did, and Ghastkill responds with the same answers. The officer keeps his composure during the interrogation, though it's obviously a strain to do so.

"This will break the townsfolk's hearts," Bardolan murmurs as his soldiers take Ghastkill away. "As though times weren't hard enough. A betrayal such as this..." He takes off his gauntlets and tucks them behind his belt. "Although if Brage still lives, perhaps he can be healed of that madness. Finding him will be a task, though."

"Speaking of tasks, it hardly seems that this... conspiracy concerns only Nashkel. I have no authority to pursue this in the territory of Baldur's Gate, but I will keep eyes and ears open for anything suspicious south of the border."

The major's professional demeanor slips for a moment as he sighs wearily, but a moment later it's back to business. "As the commanding officer of Nashkel's garrison, I thank you all for what you've done today. Such bravery and skill aren't easily come by. Should you ever wish for a steadier line of work than adventuring, I encourage you to come to Amn. The army could use your talents."

He waits a moment to answer any further questions, then makes his way back to town.
