The trouble with Fey Relations

[ +- ] Trod
Trod stares ar the "road" leading to the next "village" and is beginning to think he may be reaching the edge of the frontier of civlization. These people definitely can take all the help he has to offer though. With the sun setting to th west perhaps is is time to find a decent place to rest. The main track continues down into the valley and there are traces of what might be a buildings down there but the hills and trees make it hard to be certain. The mouthe of the valley he stands in now has a small spring and some trees to take shelter or build a file with wood But the real question is what about the rather well tended side path neading up along the valley lip hading south.

Welcome to the game @ImperfectBeing

Trod decides to spend another night in the wild before exploring the buildings tomorrow. The idea of people living so closely together is unsettling, but strangely exciting.

He cheerfully gathers some fire wood, drinks from the spring and forages for berries before lighting a small fire with his magic medallion. His evening meditation and exercise disturbed by the thought of meeting another person Perhaps the monks passed this way when they left and someone saw them? he wonders.

Searching the nearby brush for something fresser Trod barely mages to keep a positive outlook with his sad dinner of an old travel cake, a single pressed dried fruit, and a bit of cheese. The warm glow of the fire provides enough heat and comfort to allow Trod to settle his mind and find sleep. Only to be awoken some time latter by a faint scratching noise.

Several feet away a mound of earth rises up then claws pierce through into the air. Moments laters a creature climbs up and out of the freshly dug tunnel. The thing it totally foreign with select sections of its body armored in thick shell while others are obviously flesh. It is either the weirds bug Trod has ever seen or perhaps a crab? Though he was informed they prefered water to dirt. So an humanoid land crab them?

https://i.imgur.com/8eoRQnUt.jpg

The creature freezes as it turns and sees Trod laying a few feet from the embers of the fire.
Dec 3, 2023 7:52 am
Trod leaps to his feet in an instant. His survival on the mountain often brought him face to face with hungry hunting animals, but Trods insticts tell him this is different somehow.

Recalling the lessons of Master Geeh, he spreads his arms wide to appear larger, at the same time shouting loudly...hoping to startle the thing away.

A whimpering rasp is heard in response, which is repeated a couple of times before you understand the words, barely.
I want to go home.

You comfort the creature back to the little fire, that you add fuel to. After several minutes of patient listening to the speech from a mouth not suited to the common tongue you get the creatures story. The child, she says she is only 6 years old, lived in the village down in the valley. She found a new path that lead to a beautiful cottage that turned out to be the home of a witch or something similar. The witch gave her something to eat and drink, she knows she shouldn't have taken food from a stranger but it smelled so good. The food made her sleepy and when she awoke she was trapped in the witches basement. Since then she has been forced to dig every day for the witch and she just wants to go home. But something the witch did makes the girl only able to leave the basement at night and forget her name and family. She is sure she is from the village, as it is so familiar, but if she goes there at night the people scream and attack her so she doesn't go there anymore.

She felt the heat from your fire and came up from her digging to see if there was any food, then you scared her.
Dec 4, 2023 5:08 pm
Trod offers her food and tries his best to hide his shock. How could someone be so cruel to a child?… Perhaps the girl was mistaken. Master Azleth had always told him to talk, think and take action. The three T’s.

Will you take me to this witch? I’d like to talk to her and learn more.

cursed gir?
By now the girl/thing has calmed down, mostly due to your calm and patient manner. But when you mention going to the witch she becomes frightened. In her rasping and faltering speech she urges you to reconsider. Oh, you don't want to do that. She will catch you too. You're nice. She will make you ugly like me and do all sorts of things for her.
You talk a bit more and are able to convince the girl to give directions to the house though she refused to accompany you.
If she finds out I talked with you she will be mad and punish me again and the thing twitches and shudders in remembrance of something unpleasant.

The witches cottage is magical and moves around each night. However each morning it always has a nice path leading to it from some remote place. This brings to mind the path you saw earlier before sunset.

If you go there before midnight it should still be there otherwise you will have to look for it in the morning.

The girl claims this is how the witch gets her servants. They find the path and become enchanted into following it to the house and tricked into falling under the witch's power. Before heading back to the witch she list off several warning she has gleaned from her time with the witch and from what she has learned from other servants.

Follow the path but don't walk on it.
Don't tell her your real name, witches use names to bind you.
If you enter her yard you are in her influence and in her house you are in her domain.
Don't take anything from her without knowing the price, there is always a price.
Always read the fine print. There is always fine print on written contracts. Even if you can't see it.
Don't get her mad.
She can lie but won't lie, though she will try to hide information and reveal only what she must, when making a bargain or contract. All exchanges are contracts to her.
She likes to be flattered but hates fake compliments.
Dec 5, 2023 12:35 pm
Assuming there is enough time to get there before midnight Trod follows the directions, keeping to the left of the path. He asked the girl to wait by the fire for his return.

As Trod hastily makes his way through the wilderness he starts to think.

I should be able to sort this out. This so called witch must have a reason for her behaviour. And as master Azleth says ‘Every tale has eighteen sides ‘. It’s just a matter of reaching a solution that works for everyone.
Dec 5, 2023 2:07 pm
Trod leaves the girl at his camp, feeding stick slowly into the fire, and makes his way to the path he saw earlier. He is able to find it by the dim light of the moon and follows it up into the hills and woods nearby. The path winds such that the road is quickly lost from sight and Trod soon feels lost and fear pushes him to follow the path, treading on its safe surface towars what musht be a nice place.

Keeping off the path you make your way parallel to it and after a couple minutes you come to an odd looking cottage. Lanterns illuminate the area around the cottage and all the windows in the home are dark save a small window inset into the front door. You can't quite put your finger on it but something 'feels' off about the building and the surroundings. It is almost too idyllic, despite being only lit by the lanterns.
Dec 8, 2023 8:44 pm
Cautiously I make my way to the front door. If nothing happens I will knock loudly.
Dec 8, 2023 10:47 pm
At your knock you hear a slight clatter inside followed by the sounds of feet on stair heading up and down. After another moment a voice calls out Come in.

Opening the door you see a cozy interior with simple furniture, a small fireplace, and a simple rocking chair that holds a hunched and feeble figure with a big cowl pulled up to hide their head. The entire place is furnished to suit the small figure in the chare so that your head barely clears the ceiling. Their gnarled and shaking hands work with a pair of knitting needles and a couple balls of yarn.

Come in, come in. It's quite late out for someone to be out and about. What brings you to my home? The voice is dry and whispy but carries an odd hint of music somehow.
Dec 9, 2023 6:39 am
I make my way inside and speak to the figure. Eyes wide taking in all the sight of things I've only heard about.

Many apologies for my late night call but my business is urgent. I am from the mountain and on my travels I was told you had captured and transformed someone from the nearby village. I want to check if this is true?

Despite feeling so unnerved master Baffu's lessons on manners suddenly kick in. Giving a low bow I speak again.

Please allow me to introduce myself i am Tr...

The words of the girl ring in my head. If what she said was true I shouldn't give my true name.

...Tred. my name is Tred. Pleased to meet you.

I stand up straight (or as straight as the room allows) and look directly at the figure realising that I've told the first lie of my life.
Dec 11, 2023 3:06 am
Hag
My, arn't you direct. and the figure chuckles a bit.
As a matter of fact I have acquired some indentured servants. I do not mistreat them, as long as they follow the rules, and they will be freed when I get what I need.

Now you look like a do gooder busy body. So before your get all worked up about taking on the big bad evil hag let me tell you my side of the story.
[ +- ] The hags tale
Believe me or not I leave that to you. But judge me not by the tales of others or your own biases opinion's based on my looks. The children will be back by dawn and we will be in a new nest to rest out the day. You can talk to the children then or go to the village and see for yourself. My daughter may be hidden by the veil but the eyes of a fey can never be hidden.
Dec 11, 2023 4:04 pm
Trod's face is a picture of sadness as the hag reveals her tale.

You are free to do as you wish. But know this, I will not stop until I have freed my daughter. I can give you a charm that if you get it to my daughter will allow me to find her no matter what that priest does
Dec 12, 2023 8:31 am
I bow politely and take the charm if it is offered.

With a quick farewell I leave the house and head back to the campsite. I make my decision to head into town the next day and search for the Hags daughter Lirael.

Despite the terrible situation it feels good to be helping someone again.
Dec 12, 2023 1:42 pm
Trod, charm in hand, makes it back to the camp without further issue. The little cursed girl is still at the camp feeding sticks into the fire. Upon hearing that you have offered to help the witch so as to free her she becomes quite excited and says she has to rush off to complete the nights task.

In the morning you make your way into the little village. The village itself fills most of the small and peaceful valley with a house or located near fields throughout the area but growing increasingly dense as you approach the middle till you come to the crossroads which has a total of 6 buildings. A church, a warehouse, a smithy, a small inn , a brewery, and what looks to be a store. Each of these looks to be larger than should be needed and built mostly of stone and look to have living spaces on the second floor of each. This leeds to the speculation that perhaps they were, and possibly still are, also the local holdfast against unfriendly outsiders or overly energetic and dangerous natural events.

The sound of the smith hard at work and a trickly of smoke from its' forge is the first thing to greet you as you near the center of the village. You saw, and were seen by, several farmers working their fields on your way in to town and you note the man stepping from the inn's door does not seem surprised to see you. The smell of fresh baked bread and cooking food remind your stomach of the culinary wonders of the world that you have only known since the loss of brother Cook and the rest.
Dec 13, 2023 4:20 pm
With a smile on his face Trod enters the Inn (he recalls some of the stories Master Cayfu told of the taverns and inns he visited).

If there is someone at the bar Trod asks for some food and makes enquires as to the the whereabouts of the priest.
Dec 14, 2023 1:33 am
Stepping inside you see a neat L shaped room with a fireplace in the corner of the L, small private tables in the short side, and the long bar with benches and long tables on the long side of the room. A woman steps out from the kitchens behind the bar and greets you
Adabra Gwynn
Welcome stranger. We do not get many of those. Perhaps while you eat you can share word of the world beyond our fair valley.

Taking your order she moves back to the kitchen for a moment and returns with a plat of warm food.

The priest? Are you one of those traveling priests? Heard tell about those and she rattles of for a while, informing you that the priest breaks his morning fast alone and spends the morning taking care of his church so can be found there till after lunch time as he move around the various homesteads in the afternoon before holding an evening sermon for those who with the gods favor more than ale. The woman, whom you lear is Adabra, is obviously curious but also considerate and leaves you to your food, returning from time to time to refill your cup of warm and soothing tea that is served with the meal. The man on the other hand seems quiet and to not like you, odd from what you know of tavern keepers but Adabra seems to be the one to greet people and take orders while the man runs thing in the background.
Dec 14, 2023 5:32 pm
Thank you for the food and the information. I will come back later and help you in any way I can but first I must speak this Priest about a serious matter.

Trod rises from his seat and bows to both Adabra and the man. His intention is to go into the church before lunch and speak to the priest alone.
Dec 15, 2023 4:14 pm
Making your way to the church, which appears to be a large single room with small high glass windows on the first floor. A smaller second floor with larger windows and a door to the balcony that surrounds it and a small belfry atop that. Moving to the front you find the main doors closed and locked. Wandering around the building you see a garden and a man working in it with the back door of the church open.
Malgrim
The man is dressed simply, but the material is obviously of good quality, and moves about the garden watering the plants, pulling weeds, and picking the occasional item and placing it in a basket.

Gorman had been keeping in the shadows watching the person sitting under a tree a little further down the path. Another, creature looking rather like a large badger, had approached the stranger and seemed to be in the process of introducing himself. Gorman watched to see what reaction there would be. Nothing untoward seemed to have happened so he decided he might as well join them.

He spread his arms wide to show he meant no harm and said Hello my name is Gorman Trevow. I have been apprenticed to learn hunting and tracking under the tutelage of a well respected hunter in a village not far to the west. Grunting the hunter interjects Now that introductions are over on with business.

He goes on to explain what he knows of the situation.

Some time ago odd sightings of previously unknown creatures in a nearby bakery began and increased in frequency and concern. The local mayor and priest claimed a dark grey moved in and was attacking the village. A traveling friar brought word to the monetary Aizashi came from. In the meantime the friar had also contacted his friend Karesohn to keep an eye on the situation.

A couple of days ago I found a deathly wounded monk who had news of these events. He claimed the fey's daughter was abducted by the mayor with the help of the priest.

Karesohn recounts all the monk told him before passing on from his injuries.

Yes. Though I have no proof, I also have no reason to disbelieve his word. But the priest is a well knonw and respected figure who has lived in the area many years. There are few who woud believe the priest would do such a thing so I caution you against a similar approach of confronting him without support. Both the priest and fey, if they truely contesting via magic over this girl, should be conciderd dangerous. The key is to find out more.
Find the girl or talk with the fey transformed monsters, if you can find some. The vilagers are likely innocent but aas you are strangers they are likely to tell the mayor of all you do unless you can prove to them in some way that thigs are off.
Jan 11, 2024 3:40 pm
You raise some great points. Do you know where the monk had his camp when he met the transformed child? I'd like to meet one of them to be honest. We might glean some additional information.
Jan 11, 2024 4:05 pm
Karesohn gives some directions based on the story he got from the monk. With only two roads in and out of town he is confident. However as the fey cottage moved reach night this may not be the place to find them anymore. He suggests that Gorman might be able to help narrow the search with his tracking skills
Jan 11, 2024 7:12 pm
Gorman walks over to get a better look at the token. "This looks very precisely made" he said to Aizashi " Do you think it is magic in some way. If there is magic involved here I think getting the fey's version of events first could be a good idea. I can't any downside to doing that but what is your conclusion. " "I think you are more experienced than I in these matters so I will go along with whatever you decide."
Jan 12, 2024 2:14 am
I quite agree about seeing the fey first. I would not consider myself overly experienced in the matter of magic though. Either way we need to stay cautious. Aizashi agrees with Gorman.
Prepared to head off he turns to Gorman once more Should we see if we can find the Monks camp site and maybe we will run into one of the supposed transformed children? On the way I guess we should keep an eye out for a winding path that might seem out of place in this forrest.
Jan 12, 2024 9:21 am
" Yes I think a first target should be the monk's camp. If we are to track the fey we won't need the usual tracking skills I have learnt but I need to look for tracks that seem odd or out of place. So you can help by looking for anything that does not seem quite as it should be."

Gorman then stood back from his new companion and said " I am just a normal human with some training in hunting and tracking but I have never seen one of your kind before, would you mind telling me a bit about yourself"

Of course. I'm a Badgerkin. In the common tongue my kind is called beastfolk. I might be able to help with tracking down the camp or even the fey herself for that matter. We have a rather sensitive nose and mostly hunt by smell. I myself am a trained martial artist but no hunter by any length. Aizashi explains happily.
You don't happen to have somehting belonging to the monk, by chance? He asked Kåresohn.

Kåresohn

Kåresohn
I buried him with his personal effects but did keep the other items he had. His pack likely has his scent. It will take a bit of time to get to my house. Gorman knows the way. The items sit on the table within my workshop. But be sure to be gone quickly. If you stir up trouble with the fey and they think I am with you it will cause me no end of trouble.

Gorman is familiar with Kareohn's house from his time wandering the area and recons it will take a couple of hours to get there.
Jan 12, 2024 2:43 pm
In that case, I'd say lead the way, Gorman.
Turning to Kåresohn, Aizashi adds My intention is not to stir up trouble. I'd merely want to see what can be heard. No cause for concern. We will be discreet and we won't drag you into anything.
Turning back to Gorman: Let's be sure no more harm comes to the innocent and uninvolved.
Jan 12, 2024 3:28 pm
You make the trek to the hunters house, figuring you will have time to make it there, look thing over, and return by sunset. You chat along the way to get to know each other better and easily find the things left by the monk. Besides the packe there are other items that most who travel would have in it. The items include a bedroll, flint & steel, a belt pouch , a rucksack, a lantern, an empty waterskin, a rope (50 feet), a torch, a sword, chain shirt, sling w/20 bullets, and a shield. Unfortunately the monk was apparently fastidious in keeping his things clean so the majority of his scent is on the pack. But the bed roll is taken and stuffed into the pack to rucksack with you on your trek back to the troubled valley.

Let me know if you want to grab anything else, do anything going to/from the house, and what you do when you get back to the valley just before sunset. make camp, start the search, go into town, etc.
Jan 13, 2024 2:46 am
Well, let's hope this helps. Let's take what we need and head back so we can get this mess sorted out.
Aizashi takes a good whiff of the bedroll and backpack so he can try and find the scent ones they are back in the valley.
Other than that he leaves the things alone.

After returning to the valley, Aizashi starts preparing for camp, near the monk's previous campsite, assuming that they found it.
Jan 13, 2024 3:18 am
You are able to easily find one of the two roads into the valley and Aizashi catches a faint trace of the monks smell. But beyond that it is too weak to guess where he camped, other than common sense. So you pick a decent spot and make preparations for the night.

Aizashi prepares some wood for a fire.
After he has sufficient wood, he leaves the camp area to look for some wildlife to hunt, like rabbits or maybe a deer or something like that.
If successful he'll prepare some of it for a meal for himself and Gorman. Depending on what animal he caught, he will attempt to make jerky out of the rest.
OOC:

As you set camp darkness falls over the valley and the small clearing you set your camp in you both feel as if something is watching you. Staying casual you continue your activities as you look around for eyes in the bushes or any movement but find nothing. Then you both "hear" a voice in your heads
Why dost thou visit these lands?
Jan 14, 2024 12:31 pm
Aware of his raised hackles Aizashi tries to suppress a shiver and to jump at hearing the voice.
We are here in a quest of truth. And to help those who have been wronged. And we are here to aid ALL the children of all heritages.
He says as a shiver he failed to suppress runs down his spine.

Gorman was feeling pleasantly content after the meal. This adventuring did not seem too bad at all he thought. The day's travel had been uneventful and he had made a new friend. Then all that changed with that voice in his head, he saw Aizashi react as well. " What was that " he said moving closer to his friend " Did you understand what it meant?"

I believe it was telling us to be sure to consider both sides of the story. Or perhaps there is even more than just two sides. And that what we know so far is not the whole story.
He contemplates for a bit, then looks at Gorman and says
We need to hear both sides from them directly, for all we have now is conjecture based on the words of a dying man. I suggest, if we do not find the hag this night, we will investigate the village in the morning
With that he starts to look for any clues of the hags hut, if Gorman agrees with him.
Jan 15, 2024 5:20 pm
" I think it is too late to do anything more tonight and while your tracking skills are based on smell mine use sight and it is now too dark for me to see any but the most obvious signs " We must get ready to leave at first light though to make the most of the time we have. "

Gorman looked around as best he could and could not see any immediate danger. " Do you think we need to take turns in sleeping or shall we risk any attacks and both try to get as much sleep as we can. I am sure we will make better trackers if we are fully awake "
Jan 15, 2024 11:11 pm
Let us start early in the morning then. I can not see or smell anything in the immediate area. But to be save we should probably take turns.
Moving back to the camp he finds a place that hides him a little from few and says
i'll take first watch.
Jan 16, 2024 1:38 pm
Taking turns you rest through the night without incident though both of you feel as if you are being watched A couple of time you each feel again the strange pressure in your minds of the voice but no words are conveyed and the contact is brief.

In the morning you make your way into the little village. The village itself fills most of the small and peaceful valley with a house located near fields throughout the area but growing increasingly dense as you approach the middle. You see and are seen by several farmers working their fields on your way in to town.

You quickly come to the crossroads which has a total of 6 buildings. A church, a warehouse, a smithy, a small inn , a brewery, and what looks to be a store. Each of these looks to be larger than should be needed and built mostly of stone with living spaces on the second floor of each.

An entire side of the smitthy is thrown open to the cool crisp air but from the waves of heat seen radiating out of the smithy you assume it to be welcome to those within. A man is gathering firewood from a small side yard next to the inn and pauses to watch you with a mix of curiosity and caution as you near. The smell of fresh baked bread and cooking food argue with your imited funds over having a second breakfast. The inn likely has a much better cook than the one at this mornings camp
Jan 16, 2024 1:55 pm
While walking into town Aizashi tries to find any indication of people being scared or upset. He also tries to see if anything appears out of the ordinary. Also he is trying to see if there are any children around
How about we check in at the smithy, introduce ourselves as travelers who are passing through, and ask if they have need of any help in return for food and lodging? It could give us an opportunity to get to know some people and we are not immediately asking for the same person as the last visitor they had here. he whispers to Gorman, while looking around pretending to be amazed by the size of the village.
Jan 17, 2024 1:23 am
The road into the village center passes several homestead that consist of 1 to 6 structures and look to house 1 to 3 families. Beside the adaults children of age are already out doing morning chores on the farms. A few children are spotted playing and upon noticing you stop and run to the nearest adault but keep watching with obvious wide eye wonder and curiosity. The adaults seem friendly though not openly friendly.

The decentralized layout of the are is typical of the freeholds so this valley was likely settled by them though from what you know is under the contorl of no nation, kingdom, or federation.

As you near the forge you see a overly large and burly man. though matching the othe people of the village, humnan with tan skin and brown hair, he easily out masses the next largest man you have seen by at least half again as much.

The large man is currently working on aranging the fule within the furnace and ocasionally moving other items in preparations fo the days work. A rough piece of bar stock still red sits nearby and he grabs it up and thrusts it back into the furnace to watch it heat as the air form a low vent rushes into the furnace pulling the heat from the fuel.

He spots you as he continues his work. Good morning strangers. Be with you in a minute if you have work for me. If it is gossip you're after best head to the inn. But I got a few minutes work before the heavy stuff starts so if you've got other questions you might as well speak up before I have to let my hammer fall. Though somewhat brusk you get the feeling it is just his nature and he means nothing by it.
Jan 17, 2024 2:04 am
Aizashi approaches the smithy and goes to the blacksmith to introduce himself.

The big man looks Aizashi over and gives a low rumbling chuckle. I only teach apprentices and that contract is for 6 years, 4 as an apprentice, two as a journeyman. But if you want to learn to hit metal to metal I could always use a hand at the bellows. But what about your friend? and he nods towards Gorman and raises an eyebrow questioningly.
Jan 17, 2024 7:15 pm
Gorman observes the village as they walk through, taking note of the layout and the demeanour of the villagers. He keeps a watchful eye on the children who seem unduly shy as if strangers mean trouble. The adults also seem cautious but living out here that is probably natural

When Aizashi suggested checking the smithy, Gorman had nodded in agreement. "Sounds like a plan. Learning a bit more about the local community might help us understand the situation better."

Approaching the smithy, Gorman keeps an eye on the large blacksmith. When Aizashi introduces himself and proposes the idea of helping out in exchange for learning, Gorman stands back a bit, observing the interaction. He doesn't want to interfere but is ready to speak up if needed.

As the blacksmith asks about him Gorman steps forward. "Name's Gorman. I'm a tracker and a hunter. We're passing through and thought to offer our skills in exchange for some hospitality. Any tasks you need help with?" Gorman keeps his tone friendly and open, ready to gauge Thagren's response.

Scratching his beard he ponders before replying I can always use fresh meat. The local hunter that usually frequent the area haven't been coming to this valley for a while. Something about people antagonizing the wildlife and shrugs So we either have to trade with other villages or get it from our own herds, whitch ain't that large mind you.

He stops working and turns to look you both over more closely. Mind you we don't get many travelers out here and the last one through caused some sort of ruckas so if you mean to do any business mind your manners. Everyone goes there to talk. To body and hot here he says with a chuckle as he lifts a hammer in one hand and works the bellows with his other. Bring me fresh meat if you get any, remember I asked first and the man begins to work the piece of heated stock pulled from the furnace

Aizashi proves correct. While there are some small animals in the area, the spread out nature of the settlements throughout the valley makes Gorman feel like he would be hunting in someones yard. On your treck in you noticed that most places in the valley can see at lease one house, hear the locals working their fields, or see a trickle of smoke from a nearby homestead.

You make your way to the inn and the smith set to on his hot and noisy work. The place looks relatively new or it has had work done on it. The sides are painted and every other window has glass. At this time all the windows are open and the smell of good cooking wafts out as you approach.

Stepping inside you see a neat L shaped room with a fireplace in the corner of the L, small private tables in the short side, and the long bar with benches and long tables on the long side of the room. A woman steps out from the kitchens behind the bar and greets you

Adabra Gwynn
Welcome strangers. A hunter and beastkin, we do not get many of those around these parts. Best make sure the local children dont't try and get their daddies to "tame" you as a bed time companion.. she teases. Aizashi has heard of the fettish young humans have for soft furred toys at bedtime. This is why he pitties their kind bereft of fur or feather.

The woman, whom you lear is Adabra, is a pleasent conversationist and expounds the vitues of the "quiet village life away from big cities, kings, and nations" Wh is considerate and curious but you fel her questions are a bit pinted and prying. "where are you form? How long will you stay? What bring you here?"
Jan 19, 2024 2:34 am
We are travelers eager to learn of new and different cultures. I have grown up in a village not too unlike this one. Yet I have had limited contact with humans. We seek to trade our skills and labor in return for some food and shelter while we learn about life in a village such as yours. Aizashi tells her.
Would you happen to be willing or interested in this kind of trade? The blacksmith has asked us to provide him with some fresh meat. Is there a local hunting ground in the area?
He let a smile touch his lips and mischievously states I don't think taming me will be a good use of their time. However, the children are welcome to talk to me if they would like to learn of my kind
Jan 19, 2024 8:32 am
Gorman addresses Adabra " You are right that I am a huntsman and can indeed help get you fresh meat if you have a nearby hunting ground but I was brought up as a carpenter too so if there are any repairs that need doing I might be able to to those in return for our keep "

The woman shakes her head at Aizashi's comment Ain't much to learn. One village is much the same as the others. Then a twinkle enters her eye. But entertainment is scarce. If you are willing to play along I can give you lunch and dinner on the house. You see we have the children gather at the church after lunch to get as much learning as we have and can cram into their heads. I have a mind to have you sit in the corner not moving, act dead and stuffed, then when they are all present we will signal to you and you can greet them. she finishes with a smile. If you and your friend can tell them, and those of the village that have to time, about your homelands and travels for an hour or two that should more than cover the meals and a place to sleep the night.

Turning to Gorman she replies Well the valley itself has little wildlife. We discourage the predators and the boys learn to hunt on the smaller local wildlife. But ours is a small valley. Just make you way to the surrounding hills or other nearby valleys, ones without villages mind you, and you should be good. There are local hunters that claim the areas to the east, both north and south, so if you head west or west-north or west-south you should be good. Strait west is your best bet for larger animals but that goes for predators too.
As for carpentry, well . . . The local tinker is a bit late but we have a few handymen and most farmers take their hands to almost any kind of task to save the coin. You understand how it is. Anyway I can pass the word and if you are back by an hour after noon the parents will have dropped their kids off and we can see if there is any interest. That gives you at least the morning ,if you plan to help with the schooling, to try your hand at hunting.
Jan 20, 2024 12:48 am
I think I like the way you think, lady. If you don't mind, I would like to hear more about you nefarious plan to entertain the children. When would you like me to be in the church?

We don't want them frightened of you, but a little surprise is good. I leave the details to you but please remember they are children and this is a quiet area so it will not take much to bring some excitement to their day. You woke with dawn and success in the valley quickly so you have several hours. This is a bit short for a full hunt but you might get lucky if fate, or the GM, is on your side. 😊
Jan 20, 2024 5:01 am
Aizashi turns to Gorman
I think we should see if we can find some game to the west of here, but we should make sure to return in time to meet the children.
Turning back to Adabra he says Thank you for the oportunity. We will be back soon to prepare for the meeting in the church
Jan 20, 2024 9:28 am

After conferring with Gorman Aizashi starts heading out of the village towards the woods in the west, being prepared to search for game and hunt some meat.
You are an experienced hunter, right Gorman? How should we best go about it?
Jan 24, 2024 8:26 am
Gorman looked ahead as they approached the wood. There was a clear path leading into it but Gorman led Aizashi further to the right. " Wildlife will in general keep clear of major tracks which humans use, if you look carefully along the edge you find thinner trails which are often made by deer these are the way we should enter "

They had to go about half a mile before Gorman spotted the type of trail he had described he pointed it out to Aizashi "Do you see there by the fallen oak behind it is atrail, let us go along that, make as little noise as you can though. "
Jan 24, 2024 9:36 am
I will be quiet. Do you think we will be able to find something in the time we have?
Aizashi took care to be as quiet as possible as he was following Gorman.
What feeling are you getting from the people in the village?
Jan 24, 2024 3:17 pm
Having wandered off on a side trail, then a less used side trail and soon are out of the valley and off the beaten track. The hills beyond are low and wide with a patchwork of grassy fields, bracken, clumps of trees, or thick woods. Gorman leads the way as at first you simply strike out from the are then find what he is looking for.

survivalist - (2D6)

Jan 26, 2024 4:43 pm
OOC:
Survivalist gives Advantage, 3d6, on rolls unless I declare disadvantage.
This game has a mechanic called Focus where you spend extra time to "focus" on an action allowing any roll with a 4 or higher to succeed. I allow this to be the default for basic tests when not in combat or other high stress or time limited situations. Thus ...
Aizashi moves very quietly and Gorman is impressed and they move quietly between cover and you scout the meadows between to woods. Though you do not spot any game immediately you do see tracks of rabbits, deer, a moose, and in the distance you spot a small herd of beasts grazing in a field. They look to be small dear (roughly 100-150 lbs). They are grazing several hundred feet away but at all times at least one of their number will have their head up, alert and searching for threats. Gorman gauges that the heard is large enough to not be affected by the loss of a single member and so make an ideal hunting target.
Either describe how you wish to approach them then roll to shoot, or you can just add another stealth roll or other action as you see fit and I can narrate the results.
Jan 27, 2024 12:09 am
Aizashi decides to leave this up to the trained hunter, since he is not equipped for shooting it or build for chasing after this kind of animal.
Jan 27, 2024 8:17 am
Gorman considers the situation then whispers to Aizashi "My idea is that I will try to work my way round behind the deer keeping a good distance then move closer to get a better shot. If I am not detected I should be able to shoot it down but if I am seen it will with any luck run straight at you so you can jump on it as it flees from me? What do you think of that plan?"
Jan 27, 2024 10:57 am
I think it sounds like a good plan. I will find a good place to potentially ambush it, if it should attempt to flee.
With that Aizashi starts looking for a good spot from which he could jump onto a fleeing deer.
Jan 27, 2024 7:18 pm
Gorman moves back then spends some time circling around the small herd. Aizashi spends the time watching what he can see of the process and shifting to stay out of sight but nearby the herd as they slowly shift as they eat. Finally in position Gorman spots Aizashi and covertly gets his attention before preparing to release.

Gorman needs to roll a test. I suggest Focusing so you can also use your Marksman trait.
So you can narrate your results here's a guideline of the results
both dice < 3, miss and it flees / 1dice < 3 & 1dice showing 3 or 4 wounds the creature into fleeing / 2x @ 3 or 4 heavily wounded & fleeing / 1@3,4 1@5,6 severely wounded & Fleeing / 2@6 one shot kill The herd scatters no matter what

Slightly startled by Gorman calling out to him Aizashi needs a moment to sort out what he should do next.
Jan 29, 2024 5:43 am
Suddenly a howl erupts not too far from the concealed Aizashi and a large beast breaks out of the bracken tens of feet from him!
Wolf
The large wolf rushes towards the staggering deer as the herd scatters. Other similar form break out from nearby thickets and bushes rushing to follow their leader. Gorman counts a total of 4 wolves hurtling the deer, attempting to claim his prey as their own. The wolfve easily out sprint the deer ant cut of its flight into the woods, turning it back into the grassy field the herd was grazing in.

Gorman and Aizashi are about 100' apart, lets say in a North/South line. The deer was about in the middle between them asn has run about 50 feet west of that, so is barely in range as it stands.
Three of the wolves circle the deer keeping it paralyzed in fear and the fourth slipped into the tall grass at some point in the chase.
[ +- ] Combat
[ +- ] Zones (distances)
Gorman can shoot at any of the 4 animals that are currently far from him, 3 visible wolves and 1 wounded deer but if any of them move further away they will be out of range.
Aizashi can move twice to get close enough to engage them in melee combat the following round.

Realising the wolves will be out of range unless he acts quickly he lets loose arrows at two of the wolves. " Fly true " he cries watching the arrows speed on their way

Ranged weapons require 1 action to load/ready befor use so you can only use 1 attack. when you do an attack you need to roll a standard test.
I added it to your earlier post for you
Gorman's arrow strikes one of the wolves, which yips in pain, breaking the encircling formation and the deer bolts for the cover of the woods back towwards Gorman. One of the wolves leaps to giv chase while the soundd limps away. The third however snarls and turns to attack Aizashi for having interfered with it's hunt.

A smll bit here and then it goes for Aizashi's throat but he manages to barely get a arm in the way.2 damage to Aizashi
OOC:
You guys can go again.. Gorman has 1 more round and can load and fire his bow at either the wolf or deer that are heading for the woods a bit to his east. Aizashi can strike the wolf that is holding on to his arm, preventing him from running away or moving at any speed. He can attack twice or attack then evade to avoid furute attacks

OOC:
Random "easy answers" guy here ...

Yes, any attack that you are proficient in lets you roll two dice. Since you are just throwing hands, yes, you can use both actions to attack.

Yes, you can adjust the health on the character sheet. It is a good way to "scratch pad" things so you know what is going on. That said, Psybermagi will have his own running total going in the background, so he'll know what is going on regardless.

Finally, you if make a mistake by throwing too many dice, Psybermagi will just drop the extra rolls. So, if you should have rolled two dice, but roll three instead, he will just ignore the third die. If you make a mistake by throwing too few dice, just roll the missing die or dice; don't reroll what you already got. So, in your case, you rolled one die instead of two. To fix it, you'd roll another single die and just note that it is the second roll for the first one. In this specific case, it isn't needed as you already succeeded on your hit and the second die won't change anything. (Once you become "veteran", you would want to throw the extra die to see if you got another "6" and thus did a critical hit. However, no criticals yet while you are coming up to speed. Which, in this combat turn, is a very, very good thing, as the wolf attacking you did very well and would have scored a critical on you already!)

Aizashi slams the wolf twice, once to the throat, causing it to let go, then ?again to finish it off! Bloodies but not critically so he looks up to see Gorman soot the pursuing wolf, which yips and breaks of its pursuit to run into the woods limping. The deer too makes it to the cover of the trees.

You looka around, making eye contact for a moment to check on each other, then scan the area. Two wolfes driven off, one felled, one missing . .

Sudenly the missing wolf reveals itself in asprint before lunging at Gorman! The two go down in a tangle and Gorman loses his bow as the wolf bites into his arms.

So Aizashi has 4/6 HP and Gorman has 5/6
IT will take Aizashi 3 moves, that 3 actions so he ont reach gorman till then round after this, to reach Gorman to aid him. Gorman is grapling a wolf and can not use his bow to shoot arrows at this range.
Thus Gorman need to either attack bare handed or with whatever he can find at hand. Either way attacks are with disadvantage, 1d6. He can also Evade for a single action to allow him a chance to avoid damage for each attack by the wolf.

Gorman looks around for something to help him fight off the wolf, a stone or tree branch but can see nothing near enough. He then notices his friend running to his aid so decides to try to evade the wolf if he can until Aizashi can get to him.

Sorry no one has a gaming sytem for auto loot colection..
That would be an intersting trait "Bounty of the adventurer: overcoming challenges earns you rewards from the ether" or Guided by the god: you recieve quests"

You both are no longer novices and can add a trait or weapon/matial arts mastery. As for when it goes into effect, that will depend on what you take. But the latest would be after you next in game rest.

Oh, wasn't really thinking about auto looting or something like that. Was more about character progression, so chasing after it get those last few exp and such. But if I understood an other post correctly, for now it's progression by milestone, right?
Realizing that the wolf is gone for now, Aizashi turns to Gorman, Let us collect our price or I should say prices.

He goes off to collect the bodies of the killed wolves, placing them near a tree, before going to help Gorman kill and collect the deer.

OOC:
It will better to dress and skin the kills in the woods but your can create a travois to drag them back. The deer may be a priority as it is bigger and has better meat.

Gain mastery in a single martial attack. Punch, kick, etc. The actual attack doesn't technically matter but it does allow you at attack with 3d6.
Feb 2, 2024 8:58 am
OOC:
okay, so in that case... Unless Gorman might be better at it or stops me... :)
Seeing that it won't be possible to to simply carry everything back to town Aizashi looks around for some material to craft a makeshift travois for transporting the animals while Gorman kills the deer and brings it back here.
Feb 2, 2024 1:57 pm
As Gorman make preparations Gorman scouts the trail of the deer from where he last spotted it. The trail is soon found and the travouis competed with a couple small trees and rope. The wolf is placed atop it and you begin the treck to hunt down the wounded deer. Fortuantly it is soon located and Gorman is able to cleanly finish it off.

Gorman then spends time, with Aizashi's help, to skin, butcher, and clean the two annimals. Leaving what you can not use of sell for the wild to reclaim you put the rest onto the travouis and make your way back to the village. By time th village center is in sight is is nearing noon.
Feb 2, 2024 2:52 pm
Aizashi helps Gorman with unloading the goods. Excuse me, I'll need to clean up and rush to the class with the children.
With that he takes off towards the inn. When he gets there he goes straight to Adabra, Do I still have time to wash up and meet for the class with the children?
Feb 2, 2024 6:05 pm
Gorman surveys the skinned and butchered wolf and deer, a sense of accomplishment evident on his face. The unexpected encounter with the wolves added an extra layer of challenge to the hunt, but they managed to secure valuable resources for the village.

As Aizashi rushes off to clean up for the impending meeting with the children, Gorman heads towards the village center, carrying the bounty from their successful hunt. He contemplates the upcoming interaction with the children and the villagers.

Approaching the inn, Gorman hopes that Aizashi has enough time to freshen up before the meeting with the children. It's essential to make a positive impression on the villagers to gain their cooperation in solving the mystery at hand.

As the children enter Aizashi gives them a few moments to take him in. Once he gets the feeling that the children won't be scared he slowly starts moving and tries to gently greet them.
Feb 6, 2024 9:27 am
After their initial shock at seeing Aizashi the children see that he is quite friendly and some are letting him approach him. Gorman now joins his friend and reassures the children as he goes, saying that despite his looks priest is quite gentle and wont mind if you touch him. He smiles at Aizashi to encourage him
Feb 6, 2024 2:18 pm
There are a few squeals from the first couple of kids but with the arrival of Gorman and more kids they calm down. But then the kids get in on it and start getting in on the act telling Aizashi to pretend to be stuffed again for new batches of kids, half of whom similarly squeal but the laughter and giggling of their friends quickly reassure them.
After the entire batch of children, which ranges from 10 down to 4 years of age, has met the both of you the screens are pulled back a bit to allow them to all take a seat on the floor as you explain about your backgrounds and tell tales of your lives. Gorman himself elicits less interest as a human hunter is a common thing to them but his tales of his homeland and the places he has seen gets almost as much interest as Aizashi'z stories of his "exciting life in the monetary learning to fight". Aizashis is put off a bit by the childrens discounting his martial prowess as they attribute much of his martial might to his more animalistic nature.

After an hour of this the priest excuses you and tells the children that they still must finish their lessons. You sit for a few minutes at the back listening to the priest recount legends and stories, each used as a teaching tool. Some must be common as the older children answer quicker pointing out the lesson behind stories that are not always clear. The first story deals with a foolish farmer who loved the earth and so discounted the heavens only to suffer through a drought while his neighbors had prepared and adapted as the seasons progressed by watching the sky and remembering it cycles. The next deals with the wicked nature of fay and how they can not be trusted and point out how children are their favorite prey that they will lure to the woods to kidnap and eat.
Feb 6, 2024 2:52 pm
At the story of the fay Aizashi perks up a little, listening more closely. He whispers to Gorman: What do you think of those stories?

After class Aizashi approaches Malgrim: You have interesting fables. Would you be willing to share more of them with me? Maybe over smoe food if you are willing? I am getting a little famished and would be going for a meal soon. Join me and my friend?
Feb 7, 2024 11:26 am
Gorman nod to his friend to show he too has noticed some interesting content in the stories and so supports Aizashi's request. "Yes that would be very nice, we are always interested in local tales. We have some fresh venison outside too if you would like a portion."

The priest has you wait for the children to leave before convesing with you. I ate before class began but I guess another night eating at the inn would be alright. I will gladly join you there for dinner if you like. I suggest an hour before sunset to avoid the rowdy crouds. It never gets too bad but I doubt they would let us talk in peace and you would end up aswering more questions than asking.
As for the stories, most priest collect locol folklore and write it into books. Most miths and legends are based on real people. By keeping the stories close to what each generation knows and is familiar with we can use them to pass on experiences from our ancestorrs.

And one of those stories teaches the wisdome of acepting fresh meat when it is available. I would appreciate a portion or two but the rest should go to the other villagers or the inn.

As he talks he cleans up the churches main hall from the childrens carless departure.
Time: 15:00
You can try to hang around and talk now, wait in the inn, go talk to other villagers, or we can just fast forward to dinner with the priest

Dinner tonight sounds great. As for the meat. Giving it to the inn was our intent already. I'm looking forward to meeting you later Malgrim.

After leaving the church, Aizashi makes sure they can't be overheard and turns to Gorman: We should meet somewhere to talk about how to proceed from here without anyone overhearing us. I'm a little unsure of it and also about what to think of the situation as we see it at the moment.

Upon leaving the church and looking over the central buildings before heading to the inn you note that besides the smithy, teh church, and inn with which you are familiar with, the store or trading post has its doors open and you hear voices within. Gorman instantly recognizes they are haglging, only as people familiar with each others practices can, and Aizashi learns a few new "descriptive" terms that they two men exchange as their negotiations continue.
From the inn you see smoke rising from the chimney and you assume they are preparing the evening meal in advance, or perhaps backing bread for tomorrow. Inside you find the main room empty once again but the clatter from the open doorway to the kitchen makes it easy to locate the caretakers. Despite the noise of their preparations the proprietors must be sensitive to customers as before you can reach the kitchen doorway it is filled with

My home is in a forest as well and in recent years we have had to defend our home from aggressive wildlife and bandits stealing livestock and destroying our fields.

- Does your village have similar problems? If yes, would you mind telling me how you deal with it? I have not seen any fortifications.
- Are you the only one teaching the children or do they learn arts and crafts as well?
- The children seem to enjoy your teachings, have you always lived here?

Depending on the responses he might have a few follow-up questions.

He'd be trying to see if any of the questions might give Malgrim pause or if he notices any lies from him.

As for threats the area has a few breasts that bother the farmers but larger threats and invasive forces are rare. All the settlements band together when such arise. The settlement under threat retreats to the town center, here the 6 main buildings, to await reinforcement.
It had been several decades since the last such occurrence. And that was several villages over.

The priest informed you that he read both in a nearby settlement and that it is common practice for youth to begin leaving as closer as possible then travel to other settlements to finish their training. Apprentice at home, journeyman abroad, master where needed. This is a common practice for most professions in this area.
Feb 14, 2024 5:56 pm
Gorman turned to the priest and said "In my village we had no priests to do the teaching but relied on some of the older women to teach the basics but then we had apprentices and masters much as you describe. Malgrim explains that though this is on the edge of the civilized lands the surrounding area is not all that dangerous. Most of the time each village can take care of themselves but during the war they learned to stay in close contact with their neighbors. They trade from time to time but it is infrequent. There are annual gatherings and there are a couple tinkers and merchants that travel between the towns from spring to fall.

OOC:
Just a recap - the story from the dying monk was that the fey hag claims her child was taken by the mayor and the priest who is using magic to block the hags recovery. The hag has elicited the help of some local children but had to transform them to circumvent the enchantment the priest has laid over the village that makes them believe the child is the mayor and his wife's. All the village is likely mad at the had due to the children she has taken/convinced.
If the hags story is true you will not gain any information from any but the cleric, mayor, or his wife.
If it is false then the hag is abducting and transforming children for no reason.
You need to find a way to test the truth of things. It is a bit of a mystery scenario so feel free to ask for hints/suggestions if you want.

Being circumspect is fine. I just wanted you to know you have options. You can also describe general intent and I can narrate results of multiple smaller interactions
I have more experience with simple/direct combat/trap style play but enjoy more narrative stories as well and just want to make sure the story is not too convoluted or obscure. Not everyone, ie most of the world, gets how I think so sometimes ideas are lost in translation.
Malgrim
Malgrim pauses then splutter's. Yes, we had someone come through like that. I am sorry to tell you that he must have been enchanted by a fey as he come into town and attacked me. Luckily several villagers were nearby and drove him off. If he has not returned to the monastery he is likely either still in her spell or she destroyed him. I would think the monasteries would teach you better of the vile and deceitful nature of the fey.

Malgrim is obviously nervous and you can tell that many in the room are paying more attention to you now. He is very nervous talking about the other monk but when he brings up the fey you nearly recoil at how strongly her reacts and Aizashi scents both fear and anger coming form the priest as he talks about them.

No, as I said there were several villagers nearby who drove him off. As for the fey . . . .
Well they are like beast for the most part in that their wild natures keep them away from most civilized lands and most will leave us alone. However there are a few who enjoy tormenting others. These are often known as dark fey as most of the evil ones enjoy tormenting people in the dark where we are more easily confused. There has been a fey preying on this village for a while now but we keep her away for the most part but there have been a few losses.

Again while talking about the fey he becomes visibly agitated, especially when mentioning the dark fey. At the mention of the losses he and most of the room, which is listening in apparently, sink into a morose silence for a moment.
Feb 18, 2024 11:26 pm
I'm sorry to hear about your losses. Were they many? Would you tell us about it, the fey which is plaguing you? Your people have been kind to us, we might be able to help you drive it off for good.

We have lost 3 youths. Thank goodness the young are kept safer but still. . . .
As for the fey, all we know is it moves it's house each evening somehow. During the day it is impossible to find unless you follow her enchanted paths that charm you into believing her lies.

A feral growl rumbles through the inn from the locals at the mention of the losses.
Feb 19, 2024 2:25 am
When you say lost, do you mean the fey killed the children? That is horrible. Gorman, what say you my friend, shall we find a fey?

Aizashi tries to see if anyone in the inn would react in any fashion that would show that they don't agree with Malgrim's version of the story.

Gorman considered this new aspect that was affecting the village and now understands some of the reactions they have been getting from the villagers. They are clearly preoccupied with the fey and had little time to be bothered with Gorman and Aizashi. Turning to his friend he says "I do feel we ought to try to help. If they could show us one of the places the fey has been in we might be able to search for tracks from so we could recognise them in the future. "

He turns to Malgrim " Can you take us to some of the place the fey has been known to inhabit. I don't know if we can help but I think we would like to try "

Listening to Gorman Aizashi nods in approval.

Feb 23, 2024 4:09 am
When you are ready you and the guide set out and he takes you along a path past several homesteads then takes a little used side track up into the hills that surround the valley. As he walks he talks a bit about the valley, its people, and their trouble with the fey.
Szoldar Szoldarovich
This place used to be peaceful when I grew up. Sure there are fey in the wilds. Always been fey in the wilds. Some cause trouble, some people bother fey thinking they have gold or gems. The biggest issue was always the changelings. See some fey would give take an infant of the people and put theirs in its place with a glamor on it. It's not common as far as I know but it seems to be one of the most common stories round these parts. Course most of this would have happened in the Dawn age when tings were different. There are also stories of foundlings turning out to be fey. Mostly, seems to me they are just territorial.

The current problem stems from some fey acting up looking for her child. Fey live a long time and area not the most stable. Most think the fey child grew up and left, wandered off and forgot, or died from a sickness. No matter the case all we know is she want her child and somehow blames us.

He rambles on talking about the sighting of the hag. How over a year ago now she started luring children to her house. Back then she just kept them, talked with them and told them stories how the adults shouldn't be trusted. Finally some locals had enough and went to drive her out. Burned down her hut. Only the next day it was gone. Then a week or so later it was back, only somewhere else. And then she didn't just talk with the kids, but kept them. Tooks us a while to put two and two together. Now none of the children are allowed into the woods on their own. We sent the priest and a couple lads to try and bargain or drive her off but we can't seem to get close any more. Only outsiders and youth below adult age can see or find her hut.

Over the next hour he shows you several paths and areas where her house might be found. Places with thick groves, mid sized grottos, hidden clearings. By time he has to go and tend to his chores you have a good idea of what to look for. By this time it is mid afternoon so you have several hours before sunset, when the house is said to move.
Feb 23, 2024 12:26 pm
So, usually the fey were not a problem until recently? Do you know anything more specific about the hag?
Aizashi followed Szolar keeping up small talk while trying to gather as much information as possible about the situation with the fey.

Like I said, most interaction with the fey was in the wilds not in or near town. Sometimes one of them gets curious, bored, or lost and wanders inout our area and vice-versa. That's the standard. Course people are always talking about the exceptions he sighs and grumbles something about fools and half-wits This hag in particular? Not much is known. Folklore says hags can be bartered with for cures and other minor magics regular folk may not have. We have the priest so are lucky. Not all villages have one, or even a apothecary, medicine woman, or herbalist. Those folk may find it easier to to deal with the nearby fey than leave to find what they need. Maybe that's part of the problem. The locals never put much thought to the fey. Me neither but I traveled outside the village when I was younger for a few years and saw how other folks did things. Now we're missing 3 children and weird things keep showing up around the village. People locking doors at night, keeping kids out of the woods, it's a shame really. But I was with the first group that went to talk with her and she was strait up unreasonable. Kept ranting about "give me back my child!" and got really cross with priest Malgrim.
Feb 23, 2024 5:59 pm
Gorman listens attentively to Szoldar's recount of the fey troubles in the village. As they explore the paths and potential locations of the fey hag's house, Gorman keeps his eyes sharp, scanning the surroundings for any signs of the elusive dwelling.

When Aizashi asks about the hag and the number of children taken, Gorman interjects, "Aye, it seems the hag's actions escalated over time. Started with luring, then keeping, and now the whole village is on edge. We need to find her and figure out what she wants with the children. Maybe there's a way to resolve this peacefully."

Gorman turns to Aizashi, "We have a few hours before sunset. Let's check some of the potential locations, see if we can catch a glimpse of her hut or any clues. Time's of the essence, and the villagers are depending on us to put an end to this fey disturbance."
Feb 23, 2024 7:22 pm
Szoldar leaves it to you as his presence would only make it harder as they fey magic seems to shield her from the local villagers. You begin a circuit around the village seeking her hut or any signs of the strange creatures.
OOC:
Let me know if you focus on anything in particular and any actions besides just wandering around the periphery of the valley looking for clues. I get you an update tonight/tomorrow
Feb 24, 2024 2:45 am
That sounds like a good idea.

After their guide left Aizashi turns to Gorman once more Do you remember the strange encounter when we go to the valley? The voice telling us that things are not as they seem? I can't shake the feeling that we are missing something.
Feb 25, 2024 7:04 pm
"My thoughts too " said Gorman "I had thought to concentrate on looking for tracks, but it could well be that the fey do not leave tracks. We are better just looking at our surroundings and seeing if anything seems out of place, not in its natural state. "
Feb 26, 2024 1:00 am
The pair of you set out, repeating the process taught to you by the local woodsman, feeling a bit odd but hopeful that it will indead work now that he is gone. You continue to search as the sunlight fades. The sun is well below the hilly horizon but there is still enough light in the sunset sky to see when you feel that you are being watched and followed.
Feb 26, 2024 2:12 am
Aizashi whispers to GormanSomeone or something is following us. I wonder if that is a good or bad sign. Do you think we should try and talk to them?
Feb 27, 2024 6:03 pm
Gorman said quietly in reply "Now you mention it I get that feeling too. let us move into an open space and stop and see if anyone approaches us "
Feb 28, 2024 12:38 am
Not being too obvious about it you increase your caution and alertness as you continue your search till you spot a decent spot to confront your watcher.

Moving to the middle of the clearling you wait, searching the nearby woods for any signs. You wait several minutes and are about to move on when you hear movement. Then more movement and after another moments a couple forms slip out of the trees to face you.

Miremal
The first is lean and about 4' tall with blotted grey and brown skin. Atop it head and down its back small plants, mushroom and grass grow, like a mane of hair.

Bucca
The second is about 3' tall but has a full belly with wings that flap constantly to keep it aloft. As they move into sight the two whisper back and forth, glancing at the both of you They stop advancing when they are about 20 feet from you.

The lanky grey figure hunches a bit as it stops moving so its hangs touch the ground and it settles into a squat. You are new. What are you looking for. The voice is surprising, sounding more like that of a human girl that what you had expected.
Feb 28, 2024 4:10 am
Aizashi watches the 2 beings approach and wonders what they might be. Hearing the taler one speak he is startled for a moment. After he regains his composure he says Hello, umm, we are in search of the truth. We want to help ALL the children living in this valley. My name is Aizashi. Who are you? And where did you come from?

Miriam
I am Miriam and he is Brady. We came from the village but after we agreed to help the hag find her daughter we became like this and our parents forgot about us.

Brady
I know we look different but we remember our family. Everytime we try to convince them they scream and try to attack us. the voice of a young boy on the verge of tears comes from the hovering fey.

The pair explain they don't know what to do and just want to go home. The villagers all attack them. The hag helps them but says she can't break their transformation until she has her daughter. There are 2 other children working with the hag but one keeps getting confused and the other still believes the hag and wont leave until they find out what caused all of this.

By the end of their tail both children(?) are crying and siting on the grass huddling together.
Feb 28, 2024 5:43 am
Aizashi is saddened by the story and gently asks the fey We are here to help would you be willing to take us to the hag? We have been in the village. Who are your parents? And excuse me for asking but have ONLY your parents forgotten about you or the other people in the village as well?
Feb 28, 2024 12:33 pm
Brady
None of the adaults will talk with us. Most of the kids run away but I got my cousin to talk with me. sniff sniff Brasy says wiping away some tears anc a copious amount of snot She said that the adaults all told their children that we were working with the hag to steal more children but I could tell she wasnt sure.
She wont talk anymore but she still leaves me treats some times. She knows I like rasberrries.
and a sad smile crosses his face.

Miriam
We can take you to the hag but you have to promise not to attack her. Some villagers hired a hunter we did not know and he tried to catch her after we took him to her. She got really angry and scolded us the girls looks downcast Now she wont let any adaults near her house. If you want to meet her you have to go to a faerie circle then we will go get her.
Feb 28, 2024 12:39 pm
We are not here to hurt anyone, I promise. I think meeting the hag is a good idea. Where can we find a faerie circle?
Aizashi is feeling sorry for the children, but it seems strange to him, that the parents would forget their own children, yet the children remember the lost children.
Listen Brady, Miriam. how old are you?
Feb 28, 2024 12:52 pm
The two guide you away from the paths. As they do they explain that Miriam is 11, she is one of the oldest children with the hag, and Brady is 7. After severla minutes, not too far from where you met the children, you find another clearing. This one is smaller and near the middle is a ring about 5' across of tiny mushrooms mostly hidenunder the soft grass. The children tell you to step into the circle, but not to touch the mushrooms, then wait for the moon to light the clearing. The hag will come talk with you then.
Feb 28, 2024 6:03 pm
Gorman had been keeping quiet, as one person talking to the changed children was enough as they were nervous enough as it was. He whispered to Aizashi "Do you believe their story I must say they seem too worried to be making it up" I suppose we go along with them for now after all a chance to meet with the hag is what we have been waiting for"

Carefully following the children's instructions Gorman follows Aizashi into the circle. "You do realise that this could be a trap don't you and we could be changed like the children were" he says quietly to his friend
Feb 29, 2024 3:47 am
HmmmHmm Aizashi grunts in agreement, seemingly slightly lost in thought.
I think we ought to be careful. But it seems to be our only chance to get to the truth.
Aizashi carefully stepps into the circle. After a moment of thought he takes a set of braces out of his pack.
Just in case.
Feb 29, 2024 1:44 pm
Standing in the circle you have about another hour before the rising moon illuminates the clearing completely. You notice that as the silvery moonlight slowly spreads across the forest it seems to shiver and though you can ont pinpoint any particular fact it changes in some indescribable way. Soon after you hear shuffling from within the trees and a bent form approaches you to be revealed in the moonlight.

Hag
The ancient and sinister looking hag mutters under her breath as she shuffles closer. Stopping several feet away she look you over before commenting Another pair of busybody doo gooders? What is it you want and why should I care?
Feb 29, 2024 3:02 pm
Hello there, we are here to try and hear your side of what is going on with the children. So far all we know is rumours and one side of the story but we think there is more to it. Aizashi says to the hag.
Slightly intimidated by the presence of the old fey being he still decides to remind Gorman in a whispered voice Remember to not tell her your real name.
To the hag, he says: You can call me... Badgelor
Feb 29, 2024 7:19 pm
Trying to ignore the sight of the hag and pretend he is talking to any other old woman he says "Indeed it as my friend says all we have heard is what the villagers have told us but they have clearly not talked to you so please can you explain what is happening to the children and why?

I will not stop until I have freed my daughter.

Aizashi easily finds their trail and you quickly backtrack to the appropriate fork in the path you previously missed. However as you start to follow the correct path the mist becomes thicker and thicker. Soon it is so thick that you have trouble seeing more than a dozen feet from you. However Aizashi catches the scent of something moving out in the mists, shadowing your movements.
Mar 11, 2024 4:36 am
Gorman, we are being tracked. Something is out there.
Aizashi tries to stay calm but is a little nervous about what might be tracking them.
Mar 12, 2024 4:51 pm
"Yes I feel it too but I cannot see anything Let us walk back to back to guard from any attack " Gorman replies. With that Gorman put an arrow in his bow ready to fire a quick shot should a target emerge out of the mist. "Who is there" shouts Gorman hoping it is just someone from the village.
Mar 12, 2024 11:17 pm
As you begin moving back down the path, with Aizashi checking the traces of their scent from their earlier passage and Gorman trying to keep track of the trail signs as well. As you do the mist becomes even thicker. As you move you see shaves moving in the mist. Some swing from branches above while other scurry at the edge of your sight. Oddly though none of these forms make any noise.

The forms in the mist begin darting at you only to break apart into simple mist with the lightest touch. Then another smaller form flies out of the mist strait at gorman while another falls from above to try and tackle Aizashi. The figures are about 2 to 3 tall with pale blue green skin and large black eyes.

Aizashi quickly dispatches the creature that explodes into a cloud of mist before vanishing. As it does much of the surrounding mist fades. The other creature takes Gorman's inaction as an opportunity and escapes. The small things continue to pester the both of you and you end up destroying ea couple more before they give up on attacking you. By combining Aizashi's sensitive nose and Gorman's tracking skills you are able to return to a man path and head back to town. The night is late when you finally get to the center of town and hesitantly enter the in which is not locked. You note that there are multiple empty palettes laid out new the hearth which is still warm with a bank of coals smoldering at its base, warming the surrounding stone and room. The front door opens and in skips a little girl, looking exceptionally cheery and excited about ... something. Behind her tentatively follows a puzzled-looking woman with light, flowing clothes and bare feet. Though her face is mostly human, her green-gold eyes and furry red ears reveal her to be at least partially foxkin. Is this... the best place to get rations, Tilly? she calls after the girl with a thin voice. Her eyes scan the room, lingering on Aizashi, her eyebrows jumping inadvertently before she steps more fully into the room.

Behind the foxkin, a youthful human man allows himself a moment of wide-eyed curiosity before noticing you both and masking it in a clear effort to look less boyish.

Hello there Aizashi chuckles a little to himself upon seeing their reactions, The food here is good, the young one has brought you to the right place. he says in a friendly voice.
Mar 16, 2024 5:19 pm
Mina nods and smiles tentative thanks in response to the badgerfolk as she moves further into the room. Her eyes dart around. She's not entirely sure what she's doing here. She hugs her arms about herself, self-conscious under the gaze of the others in the room.

Tilly... she softly calls. She crouches to address the girl. While we're here.... Where... Where do the children like play around town? I'm worried there may be others who were affected, like your little sister was... but maybe... maybe in different ways...? Her speaks in a manner that is hushed and unsure, but her expression is gentle and kindly.
Mar 16, 2024 8:40 pm
Aizashi starts to notice the newcomers behavior and starts to worry a little why she might be unsettled.
My name is Aizashi, this is Gorman. he says waving a hand at Gorman. Are you alright miss?
Mar 16, 2024 9:35 pm
Mina looks up at Aizashi from her crouched position, freezing like a deer in headlights with a dying half-smile stretched across her face. Uhh, yes. I'm fine... Her furry ears flick once, then she slowly straightens, looking around to try to read the room (if there's anyone else in it). She glances back at Aizashi, quickly pushing a strand of auburn hair out of her face. You're not from here.... Are you.

Umm, did the fur give it away? Aizashi asks with a chuckle.
Trying to understand her nervousness, he takes a look around the room, but can't seem to find anything out of the ordinary.
You are right, we are not from here. We have only been here for a about one day.
Mar 16, 2024 11:33 pm
Mina squeezes her eyes shut and huffs an abashed laugh through her nose after Aizashi's initial comment. The shaking of her cloak betrays that her tail is wagging quick and low behind her like a nervous dog. She opens her eyes, looking from Aizashi to Gorman, and then back to the floor.

I'm only passing through, myself. We are, she quickly corrects, gesturing with a gloved hand toward the young man behind her. Ultime, she introduces. She presses her other gloved hand to her chest. I'm Mina. I'm a healer. I'm here to... heal... people... The last part comes out super awkwardly. She winces, then forces a grin. But you look unhurt; that's good! she says with a nod. Her grin steadily settles into an uncomfortable grimace as she acknowledges her own awkwardness.

The wilting foxkin huffs a sigh and glances at the door as if pondering if and how she can make a quick exit.

We aren't. But I might know of some people who could use your skills. But... Aizashi looks around to see if anyone might over hear them, if you don't mind, I think we should talk elsewhere. It's a sensitive matter.
Mar 17, 2024 7:44 pm
Mina's tail stops wagging and her head cocks to the side. Oh... Okay... One moment... Her brow rises in a manner both curious and slightly suspicious as she tries to read the two adventurers. Could they possibly have been sent here for the same reasons as her? Might they have nefarious intentions?

After a moment's hesitation, the foxkin ducks down to confer with Tilly once more, gathering what info she can about where the local children play and then checking to make sure the little girl would be okay on her own. After receiving confirmation, she finally she stands and addresses Gorman and Aizashi. ... Where would you like to go?

OOC:
Ha! I was just curious what I'd roll. Looks like Mina's got a pretty good read on you. Out of curiosity, how tall is Aizashi? Is he halfling-sized? Human-sized...?
Mar 17, 2024 8:51 pm
OOC:
That is a great question. I'm not sure how it fits with the lore and all that, but my head cannon was always about the size of a halfling, maybe even a little shorter.

@Psybermagi is there any place around that would be suitable to talk about the situation without the townsfolk overhearing anything?
Mar 17, 2024 9:59 pm
OOC:
I am pretty flexible but typically the beast folk tend to be about 1/2 way between the animal base form and average human size. So halfling size is on the small end with more small/medium beast ranging up through 4-5 feet tall with larger animals (bears, etc) being well over 6'

ARGH - I swear I posted to this thread! Not sure if it is on my end or the GP

The town center is not very large but also not heavily populated. However the locals know it better than you. Your best guess for privacy to to go for a walk and find a nice clearing or some such
Mar 17, 2024 10:12 pm
Mina says:
Is this... the best place to get rations, Tilly? she calls after the girl with a thin voice.
Tilly looks at her a bit confused. The shops the best place for preserved foods but Adabra's the best cook in the valley so if you want food and have coin this is the best.
Aizashi says:
Hello there Aizashi chuckles a little to himself upon seeing their reactions, The food here is good, the young one has brought you to the right place.
Tilly smiles bashfully and waves hesitant at Aizashi who she met yesterday.
Mina says:
Tilly... she softly calls. She crouches to address the girl. While we're here.... Where... Where do the children like play around town? I'm worried there may be others who were affected, like your little sister was... but maybe... maybe in different ways...? Her speaks in a manner that is hushed and unsure, but her expression is gentle and kindly.
Umm well, we don't play is the woods no more since Hany and the others disappeared couple months ago.
Mostly we play close to home or the center of town after school. Some kids, usually the boys, wander to the edge of the hills but we all know not to leave the valley.

As you start chatting Tilly skipps into the kitchen where you hear her shamelessly begging and complimenting with the obvious intent to be a treat of some sorts.

Adabra Gwynn
A few seconds later you hear a gast then clatter followed by a breathless Adabra standing at the kitchen door staring at Mina. Is it true? Did you find Hany? She's back and safe? The whole towns going to want to hear all about this. You have to stay the night and tell us everything. Rushing forward she clasps Mina's hands tightly as she stares into her eyes. Please say you you will stay and the woman seems almost undone to Aizashi from her previously cheerful and welcoming state.
Mar 18, 2024 12:48 am
Uncomfortable under everyone's gaze, Mina's shoulders hunch when Adabra first addresses her in the doorway. She shrinks even more as the innkeeper rushes forward and grabs ahold of her gloved hands, her ears flattening against her head and her wide eyes darting from side to side like a caged animal.

I... I guess I could? I mean... I did. I did find Hany and helped her ... recover... Mina opens and closes her mouth wordlessly, seemingly at a loss as to what to say. She's okay. But I am... I am worried about the other children of this village, she finally manages.
Mar 18, 2024 11:31 am
You know about the situation with the children, then? Aizashi asks intrigued.
maybe we can help each other and the children.
Mar 18, 2024 11:51 am
Two different people cast spells on Hany. We need to figure out who did it, and why, asserts Mina, seeming slightly more emboldened as she discusses a topic of expertise. The first step to figuring that out will be checking other children for enchantments. I know this may prove difficult for the missing children, but it's possible there may be some here whose minds are also being influenced in less obvious ways. I-- I could quite possibly help them and learn more about who did this... she turns wide, urgent eyes to Aizashi, Gorman, and Adabra, her ears perking up... if I could find them...
Mar 18, 2024 2:17 pm
Aizashi is taken a little by surprise. Two people are responsible, you say? Do you mind telling me about the spells that were affecting Hany? he asks Mina, while trying to get the group out of the inn and to a place that is less crowded.
OOC:
also, I forgot to write it in my last post...
Aizashi waves back at Tilly, trying to put her at ease with his presence.
OOC:
I would like to attempt to move the group a little away from town into the forest or something along those lines. But I would not try to force anyone or force Mina to separate from Tilly if that would make her uncomfortable.
OOC:
and regarding Aizashi's size, since it seems to fit with the established lore, he'd be a little shorter than a halfling.

OOC:
I am assuming you are not having this discussion in front of the locals as you asked about it earlier. My assumption is that until you direct statement to an npc you are trying to be discreet
Mar 18, 2024 2:47 pm
Mina nods. Two people... at odds with one another... She gives Aizashi, Adabra, and Gorman a meaningful look, her ears twitching nervously.

Mina follows Aizashi's lead as he starts to usher them out of the inn. As they move, she continues her explanation quietly.

One curse was altering her mind, influencing the way she remembers and perceives things. The other -- the one that changed her physical shape -- seemed to be attempting to counter that original spell somehow. Unfortunately, Hany has no memory of anything since her mind was originally altered, so I don't think she can help us piece together who did this and why.
OOC:
Tilly seems pretty comfortable romping around this area on her own, so Mina would be okay parting with her. (I imagine Mina about 5' tall. Maybe a little over.)
Mar 18, 2024 8:20 pm
After guiding the group of adventurers away from town and out of earshot, Aizashi turns to the group with a sigh,
well then, I'm pretty certain that the spell changing the children was cast by a hag living in the area, maybe that will help.
After thinking for a moment he adds, according to the hag, the children are helping her in an attempt to free her daughter. Apparently the Fey's daughter is living here as the mayor's daughter. But she might be under a spell as well.
Mar 19, 2024 12:49 pm
The mayor's daughter? Mina visibly deflates. First the priest, now this...! Did she want to escape the hag? Or was this some sort of kidnapping??
Mar 19, 2024 1:41 pm
If one believes the hag, she was kidnapped by the mayor and the priest.
OOC:
I feel like there was an item, the original monk got from the hag, which Gorman and I picked up?
Mar 19, 2024 1:53 pm
The charm given the monk was said to help the hag identify and locate her daughter if it is given to the young fey
Mar 19, 2024 2:56 pm
If... If we can find this child, if I can remove any enchantments placed upon her, she should retain all of her memories leading up to when that spell was cast.... Then we can hear her truth and have a better sense of how to proceed... Mina looks to the group, her head cocked to the side questioningly. You think?

She glances back toward the town center, her shoulders starting to hunch again with anxiety.

... I have a sense of what she looks like, if we see her. But how do we... How do we not...? She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and exhales to re-center.

I'm not sure how we'll avoid upsetting folks, she finally finishes more levelly.
Mar 19, 2024 9:32 pm
To be honest, this is where we have gotten stuck as well. A little deflated, Aizashi drops to the floor into a cross legged position and begins digging around in his pack.
After a moment of searching he pulls out the dead monks charm and shows it to Mina, This is supposedly able to help us identify the child. The hag gave it to a friar whom she had enlisted for help. Unfortunately he was killed by some kind of beast. A beast trained by the village's priest. So I would suggest we move forward with care.
Mar 20, 2024 1:15 am
The priest... killed him? Mina's eyes widen and she takes a pace backwards, accidentally bumping into Ultime. She yips with surprise at the contact, hopping to the side and then glancing apologetically his way. She turns urgently back to Aisashi. Please... tuck it away... Don't let anyone see it... she insists anxiously.

A little startled by Mina's reaction Aizashi puts the charm back into his pack, Right, I'll keep it hidden until needed. Are you okay?
Mar 20, 2024 11:57 am
Mina's eyes linger on Aizashi's bag for a long span. She appears to have fallen into some sort of troubled reverie.

Cold blooded murderers... she murmurs, her brow furrowing. ...They should be kept in containment. Not roaming free... She stares, sinking even deeper into her reverie, then shudders briefly as she comes back to herself. She turns her attention to Aizashi and Gorman. They certainly shouldn't be in positions of power.
Mar 20, 2024 12:09 pm
OOC:
@Psybermagi, is it weird if I narrate some of the actions Ultime takes or maybe even some words he says now and then? I don't want to overstep my boundaries, but I also wish to avoid him seeming like the NPC that everyone forgot existed. :-P
Mar 20, 2024 1:47 pm
OOC:
Your fine. Some players will do more story building. I am fine with players directing scenes more and will simply correct anything I see that does not work. You can even add reactions by Adabra for example.
Any update about your friend joining the game?
Mar 20, 2024 1:52 pm
OOC:
Okay, cool. Thanks! My original friend got some bad news about a loved one that is very consuming, so he likely won't be joining us. That said, I have different friend who sounded interested in jumping in. I just messaged her to see if she would want to take Ultime for a spin.
Mar 20, 2024 1:55 pm
Aizashi nods and grunts in agreement, You are absolutely right. I would love nothing more than making them pay. But we must be sure of the truth of it. And... And we can not simply go and attack or even kill them.
Standing back up he nods to himself and mumbles maybe this can work. to himself
OOC:
was the mayor's daughter part of the group of children who came to the school lessons at the church?
And is it a daily thing, or more like once a week or something?
Mar 21, 2024 2:14 am
Mina's brow furrows with concern and hesitation when Aizashi brings up the idea of violent retribution, but she keeps her thoughts to herself.

...What... can work?

Aizashi and Gorman were not introduced specifically to the "mayor's Daughter" but he did meet all the kids and understood that most, if not all, attend the classes regularly.
Mar 21, 2024 9:18 am
I'm sorry, I was off in my own world. There was a class for all the children of the village. I think the mayor's supposed daughter was attending it. I was asked if I could tell the children about my kind. Maybe we can participate in the class once more.
Aizashi seems lost in thoughts for an other moment before suggesting maybe Tilly would be willing to help us. You seem to have a bond with her, what do you think?
Mar 21, 2024 1:13 pm
OOC:
Thunder_Lungz has leaft the game for IRL time constraints so we will run Gorman as an NPC under GM / Player control till this story is over.
Mar 21, 2024 2:11 pm
OOC:
Okay. Sounds like my friend is interested in playing Ultime, so we should be able to pull another player in here soon. She's a great writer. Should be fun!
Mar 21, 2024 2:40 pm
Mina shrugs. Perhaps. I have more of a connection with Hany, though. I did just... Mina pauses and refrains from saying ... spend the last few hours literally inside her head...

...I did just heal her, after all, she finishes instead. So... make our way to the school and see how we can ingratiate ourselves there? ...Perhaps... Perhaps my healing services can be of use?

Her brow furrows thoughtfully. We have opportunities to spread the truth about what's going on by talking to folks about what happened to Hany. But... that also draws attention to us... It-- It sounds like it-- it could be dangerous...
Mar 21, 2024 5:26 pm
The last person who has tried to confront the village with the truth directly is now dead and buried. I don't think that would be a good idea. Let us try and see if we can get anywhere with the school.
Aizashi stops short and wonders for a moment before asking, Do you mind if I ask you how it came to be that you came here?
Mar 21, 2024 6:10 pm
Oh. Um. Mina looks momentarily abashed. Of course! I mean, of course it's fine. I'm... looking for someone. She laughs self-consciously. It probably seems far-fetched, but I'm out here looking for someone who disappeared nineteen years ago. Last anyone knew, she was headed out this direction. A foxkin. My mother. Her name was Sonia? she looks at Aizashi questioningly. She assumes he hasn't ever met her or heard of her, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
Mar 21, 2024 9:44 pm
I'm sorry, I don't think I've met her. I haven't had the chance to meat many foxkin. I'm sorry if I was prying.
He says trying to put on a smile, while feeling slightly ashamed to ask into such a personal matter.
Back to the town?
Mar 21, 2024 10:04 pm
It's okay, Mina reassures, turning her face away to hide her blush. She starts in the direction of town at Aizashi's suggestion. If I ever want to find her, I'll have to get used to talking about her.... They walk in silence for a span before Mina realizes that perhaps she's being rude.

You?
Mar 22, 2024 9:08 am
I was send by the master of a monastery where I lived for a while. He asked me to investigate the slaughter of a friar. And he informed me that there might be fey involved, so he asked me to look into that as well. That's when I met Gorman and we tried looking into it together... taking a breath, realizing he was rambling he looked at Mina for a moment and shook his head. Sorry, it's been a long 2 days. We also had a mysterious encounter with an unseeing being, telling us things are not as they seem. So I'm rather at a loss in what the truth might actually be.
Mar 22, 2024 6:19 pm
Mina's head turns sharply at Aizashi's mention of the mysterious encounter, probing the the beastfolk's face and countenance with her eyes. ...What is an Unseeing Being, and how did it approach you?
Mar 22, 2024 7:29 pm
OOC:
sorry, that was supposed to be unseen 🤣
Aizashi thinks back to the encounter, to try and describe it.
It was just a voice, I suppose. No body. And I remember feeling watched.
While explaining, Aizashi leads the group back to town
OOC:
is Gorman still with us?
OOC:
Do you rather want to go talk to Tilly and Hany or do you wanna see if anyone is at the church for class?
Mar 22, 2024 9:51 pm
OOC:
Gorman is npc now and will follow you around for now. yes he is with you along but will be mostly passive
Mar 23, 2024 2:58 am
Mina's eyes dart quickly to Ultime, then back to Aizashi. Did--? Did the being talk into your mind? Or try to invade your mind in any fashion?
OOC:
It might be interesting to inquire into the class. Is the class normally at the church? If so, we may risk encountering the priest, but that could be interesting/informative, as well!
Last edited March 23, 2024 3:07 am

Thinking back to the situation sends a small shiver down Aizashi's spine, that he can't quite suppress, Talking into my mind, might be a rather accurate description. It didn't necessarily feel invasive. But strange and unpleasant.
OOC:
the class was at the church, yes. Alrighty, to the church then :)
Without really realizing where he was going, Aizashi was taken aback when he noticed that he has lead the group to the village church.
Mar 23, 2024 2:49 pm
I see... Mina shares a look with Ultime, one hand inadvertently covering the small gash on her forearm as she blushes again. She's a little afraid he'll pipe up and tell Aizashi about their own mysterious encounter last night. She dreaded having to admit to Aizashi or Gorman that she had given away a sample of her blood to the being. Ugh! How incredibly naive she'd been!

She is relieved to turn and see the church -- a convenient distraction from the topic on hand. So this is it, then?
Mar 23, 2024 3:02 pm
It is, shall we see if the class is in session?
OOC:
Just wanted to see if Aizashi would notice if anything is going on with Mina

Rolls

Insight on Mina's nervousness - (2d6)

(65) = 11

Mar 23, 2024 3:12 pm
OOC:
Nice roll! You can clearly see that Mina is uncomfortable and abashed about something related to the topic of the mysterious being, and that she and Ultime share some sort of understanding as it relates to the topic.
Um. I guess... Let's just see... I suspect the kids are out of class by now, but maybe... maybe we can set something up with the teacher for tomorrow?

She starts to head toward the church.
Mar 23, 2024 4:26 pm
Before she gets any closer to the church Aizashi grabs her arm to stop her. Wait... He let's go after a second when he realized that he grabbed her. I'm sorry. I.. wanted to warn you. The children's teacher, it's Malgrim... The village priest.

After an other moment, before Mina can respond to him, he sighs and adds Hey Mina, are you okay? You seem a little shaken?
Mar 23, 2024 4:44 pm
OOC:
Ha! This should be interesting. If Aizashi grabbed Mina's arm with bare hands, could you describe how it feels to be him right now, both emotionally & physically?
Mar 23, 2024 4:53 pm
OOC:
Just to clarify, do you wish to go before school to talk with priest or during it and talk with priest/children
Mar 23, 2024 5:17 pm
karabooo says:
OOC:
Ha! This should be interesting. If Aizashi grabbed Mina's arm with bare hands, could you describe how it feels to be him right now, both emotionally & physically?
OOC:
I will give that a shot... Hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew, quick question though. Are you just interested in how he is feeling or does touching Mina have some kind of effect on him?
OOC:
personally I would want to avoid meeting just the priest because he gives Aizashi the creeps. He basically wants to find the hags daughter asap and get the priest locked up and move on to figure out what to do about the mayor. But I guess it might be helpfull if Mina gets to meet Malgrim before so she knows what she is in for
Mar 23, 2024 5:53 pm
OOC:
Mina isn't trying to heal or harm Aizashi, so her touch won't have any effect on him. If you as player don't want to investigate the priest, then let's go straight to looking for the little girl. OOC, I could go either way. I will say, though, that if Aizashi feels that way about the priest, Mina will certainly pick up on it!
Mar 23, 2024 6:31 pm
OOC:
It is a bit before noon at this point so school will start after lunch (1300) let me know if you want to wait for school, swing back to the farm first, or .....?
Mar 23, 2024 6:39 pm
OOC:
ah, I didn't wanna snoop around in your character threat, because I think that would take away some if the mystery. :)
I didn't think she was planning on harming him, I thought that it might be a something like a side effect, like her unintentionally affecting him somehow. But it seems like it's more the other way around? So in that case...
So, how Aizashi feels, he's worried about Mina, because to him she seems like has recently experienced some kind of trauma. After realizing that he grabbed her arm he is a little shocked and... Maybe ashamed that he grabbed her without asking for consent and barely knowing her. He is anxious about the priest because he knows the priest is hiding things and just generally gives him bad vibes
Physically he feels fine, maybe, like buzzeling with energy because things finally are going somewhere.
Mar 23, 2024 10:19 pm
Mina gasps at the physical contact, her whole body momentarily locking up. After Aizashi releases her, she grabs her arm where he touched it, her shoulders hunching.

She turns and looks at Aizashi searchingly for a long moment, seeming to process his words at a delay. It's alright... It's alright, she finally reassures. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, kneeling so that they are closer to eye level. I'm just... sensitive, is all, she says softly. She offers him a sweet, sad little smile.

The foxkin lowers her green-gold eyes, her brow furrowing in thought. We don't have to confront the priest now, she says gently. She looks back up. Shall we wait outside for the kids to come back to school? Maybe we will see the girl as she returns from lunch...? If not, we can seek her out....
Mar 24, 2024 7:37 am
Aizashi considers for a moment, collecting his thoughts, I... It will be alright. The priest needs to be dealt with either way.
He looks like he is about to start walking, then turns back to Mina,
What just happened? You knew what I'm feeling, didn't you?
Smiling and slightly relieved he added I have never met anyone like you.
Mar 24, 2024 12:55 pm
Mina smiles and ducks her head bashfully. It's a blessing and a curse, she says softly.

After a beat, she rises up again, looking in the direction of the church. Alright, then... We doing this?
Mar 24, 2024 5:54 pm
Aizashi thinks about that for a moment, I can believe that.. Then he takes a deep breath, and nodding, he says, Yes, let us do this. Do we have a plan or are we making it up as we go?

Mina frowns thoughtfully. ...Whom does this priest worship?
Mar 25, 2024 1:29 am
As you chat you wander around the small town center mapping it in you heads, at Gormans suggestion, in case things get problematic. As you wander you spt Tilly who comes running to inform you she is heading home. She doubt that her mom will let Hanny go to school yet but the boys still need to attend class unless it is planting or harvesting seasons and if she isn't there to keep an eye on them then . . . . Boys are so lazy and stupid. . . But not monks obviously she corrects herself glancing at Aizashi the rushing away with a glance at Gorman.
[ +- ] approximation of Town Map
OOC:
You can stop and Tilly if you wish or let her go.
Whenever you are ready just put yourselves at the school and class will begin shortly thereafter.
Mar 25, 2024 12:26 pm
Aizashi looks after Tilly in confusion, mumbling Do you know what she meant?
OOC:
Do you wanna do something with Tilly?
Mar 25, 2024 4:39 pm
Mina shakes her head, also a bit puzzled by the girl's rambling. I guess let's just... head to the school...
OOC:
Not really sure how to make use of Tilly. If anything, Tilly will leak how Mina helped her sister, and that could lead to trouble with the priest....

I'm okay with jumping right to the church and seeing what happens.
Mar 25, 2024 5:40 pm
OOC:
off to the church then :)
Mar 26, 2024 12:38 pm
Making your way to the church you arive before class has started. Not wanting to alarm anyone you have Gorman and Ultime to wait nearby and they take up seats at a shaded area nearby where they can watch and come running if called.

The church doors are wide open and you see a couple kids inside with others heading to the building alond the 2 roads leading to and fromm th town center. A couple of children waive to Aizashi and stare curisly at Mina. None of the children curently present resemble the girl shown to Mina and the priest is not yet pressent. Looking at the children trudging leisurely down the tracks towards the church you estimate you have several minutes before classes should be starting.
Mar 26, 2024 2:46 pm
Mina turns to Aizashi, murmuring quietly: We could suggest that I'm here to identify who among them might have developing spellcasting or healing skills...? This would give me the chance to check them for enchantments....
Mar 26, 2024 3:27 pm
Aizashi waves back at the children who were waving at him. After hearing Mina's suggestion he tells her It sounds like a good idea to me. Certainly better than any I might have had. with a small chuckle.
Mar 26, 2024 4:42 pm
Mina smiles nervously as they enter in through the doors. Okay, just... You do the talking. I... public speaking.... Not my thing, she titters self-consciously.
Mar 26, 2024 7:31 pm
Of course, no problem. Maybe we can already engage the children before the priest comes.
With that Aizashi heads of into the church.
OOC:
I'm thinking maybe we can have all the kids who are there already sit in a circle with us and we do a little show and tell kind of thing, so that we might be in the middle of what ever we end up doing and Malgrim can't just kick us out.
Mar 27, 2024 4:58 am
The two of you easily entice the trusting youth to chat with you.
OOC:
wicked, tricksy, beastkin! ;)
With Aizashi taking the lead you begin talking about the importance of being skillful and dedicated. You then talk a bit about your various skills and ask the children about their skills. At first they seem to think they only know farming, or other "boring" things. But under your guidance you help them to realize that many skill they have already mastered can be applied to other situations. And with just a bit more training or tallent they may be able to do even more. Using this you try to steer the conversation towards magical gifts to help set up the "test" to be done by Mina

Give me any changes/additions to this basic plan along with a couple rolls to convince/encourage the children to talk with you and take the test as well as watching for any reactions or other key points. Tell me what you are rolling for and any traits/background that might give advantage.

Mar 27, 2024 9:12 am
Using his acrobatic skills Aizashi shows the children that skills they have used and honed since their early childhood can be used to effortlessly and gracefully overcome many obstacles by vaulting and jumping over tables.

Similarly he introduces them to the concept that their childhood brawls can lead them down the path of possibly becoming skillfully fighters in their own right.
Lastly he throws a few of his darts and some of the support pillars before having the idea of letting the children try as well under his guidance.
OOC:
maybe Mina has something fancy and shiny in her arsenal, that could interest the children in trying, if not Aizashi could get 'hurt' and Mina will heal him?

Mina allows Aizashi to take the lead at first, standing by quietly. She reads the group, noting which children seem to be hanging back from all of the buoyant physical activity. She smiles at one of them, noting they have a skinned elbow. She gathers the quieter kids around, and, with a kindly nod requesting permission, she removes the finger caps from her glove and touches the wound, attempting to heal it. To this group of quieter kids (which would include the little girl in question) she explains how compassion can be an even more powerful force in the world than physical prowess. While she acknowledges that sometimes physical force is necessary to intervene when there is a problem, she talks at length about how suffering and violence are cyclical, how the abused grow into abusers, and explains that the best way to interrupt those cycles is through healing and understanding. She then asks if any of these children would like to be checked for any developing magical abilities.

Many of the children are excited by the acrobatic display but the girls seem to shy away at toe combat aspect of Aizashi's demonstration. But when he shows them how a few simple defensive moves can hep avoid potential harm they perk up but are still reluctant to strike Perhaps a cultural bias against female engaging in combat?

Mina seems to have similar success with her own "lesson". Several of the girls, and even a couple of boys, listen to her talk. Though reluctant at first Mina eventually convinces that a simple touch is all that is needed and heals one of the children.

Malgrim
However it is at this point that the priest appears You dare use your filthy powers on one of my wards! the incensed man shouts storming out of the church How dar you use your demon begotten powers to try and sully one of us, here, right inside our very chappell?!? The man's shouting and anger causes the children to draw back and the child recently cured of their wound is left isolated as the priest marches over to snatch them back from Mina as he glares at her.
Mar 27, 2024 2:04 pm
Astonished by the man's outburst, Mina shrinks back, squeezing her eyes shut and raising her arms up to protect her head. Frozen in this hunched position for several long seconds, she starts to whisper.

We are all afraid... We are all afraid... She repeats this to herself like some sort of mantra. Finally, she opens her eyes and looks up at the priest, offering him the sweetest, most genuine smile she can muster. My powers are greater in this chapel because they are god-given. I can heal all hearts, even yours... She extends her hand toward him in invitation, open-palmed. It trembles only slightly. It's normal to be afraid of that which you don't understand, but you are safe with me...

Noticing the priest storming towards Mina, Aizashi calls to him, Be calm and he puts himself into a position where he could intervene if the situation resolves into a confrontation, ready to spring into action if the priest should lay a hand on anyone or to step in, in case Mina can't recover from his verbal onslaught.
He relaxes a little when Mina responds only to tense back up when she reaches her hand out to Malgrim.

The priest is livid and interposes himself between Mina and the children who now stare in fear at her and a Aizashi.
You should be afraid he snarls. he snarls at Mina's muttering

As she reached out to him he shies away Do not touch me. I need no healing form the likes of you fey-touched! My faith lets me heal all. But one such as you only uses your magics to trick and torment others. I understand all too well the depravity of the fey and those that follow their paths. As Malgrim shouts at Mina he backs away, herding the children away from you. Watching this you get the odd sense that the priest is both enraged at and afraid of Mina.

The commotion has drawn the attention of some of the villages and Aizashi notes the sound of some approaching the open church doors.
Mar 28, 2024 1:12 am
Mina straightens as she lowers her hand, her ears down and her tail tucked between her legs. Her ears perk up as she looks at the frightened faces of the impressionable children, offering them a kindly little smile and nod of reassurance, even as her own body shudders with adrenaline. She crouches down to talk to them.

Your master teacher is a very smart man, and I'm sure he is very wise in his own way. He-- He is also very frightened -- I'm guessing because a fey might have harmed him in the past? -- and now, and now he thinks all fey are bad, which isn't true, she says in her thin little voice. She looks a little like she might hyperventilate, but she pushes on, standing and teetering up to the chalkboard. Hating someone solely because of their race or-- or for their traditions or practices... That's called p-prejudice. She lifts a white piece of chalk and with a shaky hand starts to draw a heart on the board with big wobbly lines. But divine love is not limited to one race or people, she goes on. It is accessible to us all.... And as- as Master Malgrim overcomes his fears and- and grows in wisdom, he will come to this understanding, as well. But he still has a long road ahead of him. May the gods bless him on that journey. The chalk snaps in half as she finishes drawing the heart. Mina stares at the end that's still in her hand, then sets it down quickly and awkwardly, turning back to the class and folding her hands in front of her.

Mina wavers on her feet once, and her eyes widen as he forehead breaks into a sweat. She starts for the exit, almost making it all the way to the door before her knees try to give out.

Malgrim

Malgrim struggles to regain his composure in front of the children. He clears his throat, his expression softening slightly as he addresses Mina and the others.

Your words hold some truth he begins, his voice gentler now, and I appreciate your concern for the welfare of our village. But we must remain vigilant against the influence of the fey. While not all of their kind may be inherently malevolent, their ways are often unpredictable and can bring harm to our people.

He pauses, casting a meaningful glance towards the children before continuing, As their teacher, it is my duty to protect them from any dangers, whether mundane or magical. We cannot afford to let our guard down, especially in these uncertain times.

With a subtle shift in tone, Malgrim adds, However, not all fey are alike. But until we can discern friend from foe, I must proceed with caution as I see fit. And allowing a stranger who wields magic unknown to me on my wards is not something I will tolerate. I think it best that you leave now.

Turning to Aizashi with a sowl You brought her here after we accepted you. It appears my trust was misplaced. all of you should leave.

By this point in time a small crowd has gathered and looks on with confusion and a slight trace of hostility at the confrontation of their priest and the outsiders.

Mar 28, 2024 2:12 pm
Mina allows Ultime to support her for a moment as she regains composure. Though normally the experience of empathic touch is slightly jarring when unexpected, in this case, Ultime's wave of curious concern helps to settle Mina's panic and provide her with more perspective.

Right. There's no need for panic. This man isn't going to hurt anyone. Not right now, anyway.

She turns back to the priest. Please don't hold it against dear Aizashi, she says weakly. I am a traveling healer. Most towns greet me with open arms, and we didn't realize anyone would resent us attempting to heal or empower these children. We simply misread the situation, is all. As she straightens and turns to leave, she addresses the woman that the little girl retreated to. I think... I think Father Malgrim would benefit from a glass of water? It appears I accidentally gave him quite a scare...?
Mar 28, 2024 4:48 pm
Aizashi starts getting slightly exasperated at the situation and the fact no one seems to be standing up to Malgrim.
Ugh, tell me Malgrim did ANYONE come to harm? Does it look like we would hurt the children? Or are you acting like this because of fear and prejudice?

Malgrim

True healers are of course welcome everywhere However as a healer you should be aware that performing healing on anyone without the permission is a crime and a child can not give consent. he snarls at Mina.
Mina says:
I think... I think Father Malgrim would benefit from a glass of water? It appears I accidentally gave him quite a scare...?
As Mina talks to the woman Malgrin burst out. I do not need a stranger trying to placate me by offering what is not even hers. That's it. No class today. All you children go home. Right now. I will apologize to your parents for the inconvenience myself later. Now go.
Aizashi says:
Ugh, tell me Malgrim did ANYONE come to harm? Does it look like we would hurt the children? Or are you acting like this because of fear and prejudice?
Turning on the monk Malgrim glowers before replying I wil not have my judgment, exercised for these ten years in the service of this village, questioned by an outsider. I think it is best all of you just leave. And you should know, not all pain and affliction is plain to see . The fey work with tricks, illusions, and enchantments. This is why we sent them away after they were caught in their deceptive ways.

Though not as outright angry as before the man is clearly not being reasonable and all hospitality has been cast aside. The villagers are reluctant to interject on your side against their own priest but you can tell that not all are comfortable with the current scene. The women present start gathering the children with the men calling out as well in support of the priests instructions for the children to head home. Mina uses her downcast head to hie that she is watching the woman and child as they head back towards one of the building you have not been in, the brewery.

Mar 29, 2024 2:09 pm
OOC:
Oh, I didn't view the priest's suggestion that we leave to be a command so much as a strongly worded recommendation. Does he even have the power to command people? He's not the mayor or the constable... My thought was to subtly keep an eye on the girl and see if there is a way to approach her without upsetting the priest, and, whenever possible, doing acts of kindness that might win the people's trust.
Mar 29, 2024 3:47 pm
OOC:
In small villages such as this there is not single authority. Even though there is a mayor, the father of the girl in question, he is more like an ambassador to act as a negotiation point for outsider. Priest typically have a lot of influence due to their access to magics, typically including healing. Other leaders of the village will be based on their personalities, skills, wealth of resources and knowledge. No the priest can not "command" anyone but if he does issue a command many might obey out of respect, feelings of gratitude, or their faith.

Mina bows her head in a docile fashion. Gripping Ultime's arm, she draws on his indignation over Malgrim's behavior. Deceptive enchantments must not be used on others -- by anyone... fey, or otherwise....

Gathering up the others you head away from the church and priest. After getting out of sight of Marlgrim, Mina steers the group around the village to the brewery via the back. The stout building is built entirely of stone save the heavy wooden door and window shutters, which are currently open only on the second floor. You have not seen anyone enter of leave this building but do know it is where the mayor lives and works.
Mar 29, 2024 6:16 pm
OOC:
I'm sorry. Can we rewind just a smidge? I'd like to do one thing before knocking on the door....
As Mina eyes the brewery, she turns to the others. She looks calmer, but... utterly drained. That little girl is the one, she says simply. She shakes her head and sits on a bench, staring at the ground and pondering what possible reason the crew could present for approaching the house and the girl. As she looks down, she notices some tall grasses growing. The foxkin tugs up handfuls of it and starts weaving it together. She glances at Aizashi briefly. Thank you. For standing up for me, she says softly, a little embarrassed.

She shakes her head. We don't have the full picture. Something happened ... possibly in this town, she observes. ... something that caused the priest to distrust the fey. We need to find out what that was so we can resolve this diplomatically. Eventually Mina's grass creation takes on a vaguely humanoid form.

When I was a girl, she says quietly, we could not afford many toys. But my mother taught me how to make these... She holds up a grass doll with a little leaf for a skirt. She smiles with sheepish self-satisfaction. Do-Do you think she'll like it?
Mar 29, 2024 6:59 pm
No worries, you did the right thing. Aizashi tells Mina hoping to bolster her spirits a little.
While watching Mina weaving grass in wonder he says I agree, but I think we need to break the spell to get the truth. Malgrim won't tell us the truth and I'm convinced the hag has only told me parts of the truth. So the girl is our best, maybe even our only option.
OOC:
what's the hag lore in this world? Similar to others in that they can't technically lie but will not necessarily tell the true version of the truth?
Mar 29, 2024 7:20 pm

Fey Halfway between elemental, spirit, and creature, the fey exist in the world. With stronger emotions and instincts than the People and more intelligent and wiser than beasts they live a life that many consider primitive. Ruled by their nobility, who are the only ones who can reliably control them, the fey long ago made agreements with the People. This pact rules much of fey interaction with mortal People but the specifics have been forgotten and lost to the common folk. It is the fey adherence to this ancient accord that has given rise to may legends of fey behavior.

Fey can lie but cannot break a pack without paying the price to the noble that rules over them. Some fey are unable to enter a home while others will never enter any structure while others enter and even destroy them at will. Fey will not use items of iron and some loose access to their magic if bound by it.

Hags
Hags are the most well-known fey spell weavers and live longer than most mortal People. Skilled with herbal lore, potion craft, runes, and ritual magic. Though less skilled than other fey with magic and enchantment they are able to replicate or even exceeded the standard fey magical effect with enough time and effort. Often considered part of the Dark Fey, those fey with more vicious natures with most preferring dark and sinister environments, hags are still sought out by others for their skills. However, it is best to do so cautiously. Often People will strive to get any Hag that resides near them to agree to a pact that limits the Hags power and movements. However, mortals have short memories and records get lost so often people are the ones to first break the ancient pacts opening the way for hags to retaliat without fear of their fey noble overlord disfavor.
OOC:
In short they can lie and even break contracts but they're are consequences so most don't
Mar 29, 2024 8:11 pm

To add to my previous post then:

Besides, it's not like there's that many people around. Say your peace and be off with yourselves.

As the lady upstairs is talking you hear a slight click. Looking to the door you see it open and shut quick and quiet as a small scrap of paper is tossed out. And the door clicks again as it is locked.

Moving so you won't be noticed as well from above you drop your pack and grab a drink from you waterskin. As you put you waterskin back on you pack you pocket the note.

Despite the literal note of hope pocketed away, she feels like an utter failure. This mysterious being -- they had clearly reached out to the wrong person. Everything about this task was stretching her beyond her comfort zones, and despite her trying her absolute hardest not to offend anyone, the entire town now seems entirely set against her. All she wants to do is crawl into a little hole and disappear.

Mina nods, wondering to herself if it might be an ambush... suspecting it's not.

I think... until then... I will be in my room, she says quietly.

The foxkin nods to Aizashi and Ultime and then retreats to her room.

Locking the door behind herself, she sets her pack next to the bed, crawls under the covers, and silently cries for a good fifteen minutes, only emerging briefly from under the blankets to fetch a hanky to wipe her eyes and nose. (The work of healing Hany had drained her quite a bit, and then everything that had happened after was.... Well, it was too much for this socially anxious little foxkin.)

She dozes for a bit after her emotional processing, and when she awakens she feels better: more refreshed and capable. Seeing that the sun has not yet lowered to the horizon, Mina takes the opportunity to pull out her writing materials and magical scroll. Dipping her pen in the deep blue ink, she notes in tiny writing:

The young girl(?) huffs in annoyance I am talking to you! And I might add, against instructions to do so. Some thanks would be appreciated. Especially as I think you might need my help more that the other way around. Do you really think you understand the troubles we face after visiting for only a few days.

Though young the owner of the voice seems quite intelligent and confident. Perhaps a bit overconfident. But alway warry of you though the concern for your wellbeing is all too clear.
OOC:
Ok, to make this work a bit better I want you to include any "exact words" you wish to use but also the message you are trying to convey, your thoughts on the current conversation or situation in general. Each post should also include a roll with any pertinent trait or background for advantage. The rolls can be for insight into what the voice through the crack, an analysis of your investigation so far, or roll to persuade the other person to believe you or cooperate. This is similar to a social combat where a single good roll will not grant you success but neither will a single bad roll spell your doom. Your words, thought, and actions will affect how much each roll impacts the total situation.

Below is a basic diagram of your relationship with the speaker. If you state a specific factor and act to affect it then the roll will impact that. Otherwise I will choose the most appropriate result.

We’re ready to listen to whatever you can tell us, Ultime says soothingly. We’re just a bit on edge after today. I guess it gives us a hint at how you folks have been feeling. He shakes his head a little sadly. But maybe if we worked together, we could help fix that a bit. We could share what we’ve learned, in case it might help. He nods encouragingly to Mina and takes a step back, looking hopefully towards the voice.

The crux of what he’s getting at is Trust/Cooperation, though he does start with a bit of Compassion/Belief. Definitely trying to ease the mood a touch. No special help from Traits or background, I think. Hope I get this roll correct?

The girl sighs I don't know why the old fey healer and priest are fighting. I think they are doing something that is confusing people. A while ago the adults started getting mad at the fey healer. Then when Calum disappeared things got worse.

Then outsiders started showing up. Which is great, since nothing used to ever really happens here. But you keep trying to get involved and I don't think you know what is happening either. The last time someone came and upset the priest he sent his dog to chase them away but the dog never came back.

But then Tilly said you brought back Hany but got in a fight with the priest. If you can bring back more children then maybe the people wont be as mad at the fey lady. So I was hoping you could get the other kids back and maybe talk with them. I think they might be the key to solving the problems here. But You really need to leave before the priest gets any madder.

For a moment, Mina just looks at Ultime, her brow raised with surprise at the level of empathy he'd demonstrated.

Realizing it is her turn to speak, though, she sighs and turns, leaning her back against the shed and squatting there. She gazes up at the stars, reflecting on this child's inner experience and choosing her words carefully.

Earlier today, I spoke to your class about the importance of compassion in ending cycles of violence. Coming here out of concern for the wellbeing of relative strangers ... against the instructions of others... you've demonstrated to me that you have that compassion in spades, along with a good dose of courage. You couldn't look away, knowing that harm might befall us if you did.

I think, perhaps, you of all people are uniquely positioned to understand how we feel in this moment. This morning, I healed little Hany and experienced first hand the pain and distress that she had suffered. I know it as if I had gone through it myself. Now we are here, against everyone's instructions (much like yourself!), because we, too, can't look away and risk the harm that will most assuredly continue....

Mina exhales and turns her head, talking directly into the crack between the boards. Her voice is low and serious as she continues.

We aren't the first to come to this town trying to help, and we won't be the last. More will come until this situation is resolved. Of that, I am absolutely certain.... But you're right. We do need you. So I hope you will give us a chance to end this cycle here.
OOC:
Mina is using her Insight into the child's ethical code to draw comparisons and appeal to the girl. She is paying the girl compliments and admitting to their need for her help to build good will. She is also (subtly) pointing out the usefulness of her own ability to heal, and using logic "More people will come" to encourage trust & cooperation. Emotionally, Mina is feeling surprisingly calm and confident (for her), though obviously still concerned about the situation in this town.

You are right, we don't know what is going on. Aizashi admits to the voice.
It's like my friend says. We would like to help. It's actually the reason why I came here in the first place. I had never heard of this place before.
Aizashi thinks back about how it was when he was growing up.
You know, in the village I've grown up a lot of responsibilities had need passed to the children and when I was younger I swore to myself to help anyone who needs help. So I'm glad I was sent here to help.
He considers for a moment and asks, Would you mind telling me, if you could chose to spend time with the fey or the priest, who would you rather be with?
OOC:
Aizashi is trying to be considerate and understanding of the child but also try to figure out if they are more fond of the fey or the priest or if they would be scared of either of them. I'd think he might have a small edge having grown up learning from an early age to protect others?

That's nice but how? You sound like the priest. Big on nice words but all that is is stories. Until today I never saw the priest mad and he has always been so nice and helpful that I believed his stories. But he proved today a person can say nice things without putting the ideas into their heart so they always act that way. How will you help? Your question seems to surprise the child and they stammer for a bit . . um . . . well . . . I don't really know the fey lady. Just stories and such. But it seems to me they are one sided stories from the villagers point of view. I just want the fighting to stop so everyone can do their own thing. You know?

I know my parent are good people but I can't figure out why they are soo mad at and scared of the fey. All the old stories, even the ones from people still alive, tell the fey are wild and though they have some tricksters and bad ones, just like there are bad people, they are not evil. So . . . Mina nods at Aizashi before she continues.

I'm sure you've heard stories about the hag coming into town and complaining about something being taken from her... she says carefully. From what we understand, it was in fact her daughter that was taken and re-homed with a family in town. But her daughter has an enchantment placed upon her, so she does not remember the hag... As to why other people like Hany have also been magically influenced, my theory is that whoever did this needed to make sure that the town and its children had memories of this girl, as if she were always there.... This way they would never question her presence in the town, nor suspect that she had in fact been kidnapped... What I don't understand is why they kidnapped her in the first place?? Did they mistrust the hag and think the child would be better off among humans? Mina shrugs helplessly, glancing back at Aizashi to see if he has any theories.

I thought fey all have magic. That seems like it would be hard to do. Though, . . . If it is a young fey I guess that makes sense, right? Young things are not as strong so . . . but it seems strange. Surely if it is true the people know the fey will look for their child. Even fey care for children right? All the stories say fey actually like children more than adult people.

Unexpectedly put on the spot, the foxkin's eyes widen. Brows raised, she glances unsurely at the badgerkin, then turns back to the blacksmith, clamping her gaping mouth shut.

Oh, um. She rings her gloved hands. It has come to our attention that... well, that the reason that hag has been complaining and making trouble lately... is that, well, it appears as though her daughter has been... taken... from her, and hidden among the children in your town. Seeing the man's brow furrow doubtfully, she quickly adds: I know it sounds crazy, but the nature of the multiple enchantments that I removed from Hany suggests that someone inside the town has been casting spells on children -- and possibly adults too -- to alter their memories so that no one questions the fey child's sudden appearance. I can't claim to know why this was done, or who did it. But if we can find the fey child and remove the curse shielding her from her true memories, we'll have a chance of getting some answers and resolving this matter -- peacefully, I hope.

Usually we leave these matters to the priest but seeing as you antagonized him I am half of a mind to think he is involved. Most frontier towns have a couple hedge witches, apothecary potion crafters, or rune scribes. We have me. Most smiths have a touch or magic and many develop it for specific needs. The smith takes the pendant in his leather and metal gauntleted hands and look it over closely before pulling out a metal disk inset around the edges with various stones carved with a different glyph on each. A couple of the stones faintly glow and the smith grunts. Taking off one of his gauntlets he holds the pendant a moment, rubbing it between his thumb and fingers then hands it back.

This is set to trigger for a specific person. Likely the child of the hag as I don't think it will react to a human at all. Though it may react to other fey or changelings in some manner. The strongest enchantments on it are protective in nature but there are also others that likely inform the crafter of the charm when and where it triggers. And once triggered the charm will be impossible to remove. So in essence it is a cursed item that only affects select individuals though most of the effects seem beneficial, or at least not directly negative.

Replacing his gauntlet he ponders for a moment as the children look on. Very well this seems to match your story. But before you heal any of the other children I will watch as you so so on my apprentice. He's not from here but has lived with me for a couple years as he learned the craft. As she does she puts a bit more pressure on the boy and they share a moment of mingled emotions before Mina pulls back, removing the spell. The boy blinks a few times then blushes in reaction to Mina's behavior. As the spell is removed Mina feels it pulled away, as if on a string. Apparently this was not the main spell and it was just an extension of some other enchantment. Removing more of the enchantment on the villagers may allert whomever crafted the enchantment.

The smith tosses the boy an odd looking chunk of rock that the lad catches hefts a few times before walking over to the smith and quietly conferring and handing the rock back.

One by one the children pass under the healers touch and have little it no reaction. They stand to the side and chat about the experience revealing a spectrum of awareness of the process normal in any group of people. As Mina finishes up, with the girl she really wanted to start with, she is surprised to realize that this girl is under a much stronger enchantment.

Ultime nods his agreement and strings his bow, nocking an arrow as well. He is watching the surrounding woods when the fey/child springs away. His gasp of surprise comes too late, and they disappear into the trees by the time he turns around. He frowns and redoubles his focus, adding to Mina, Best hurry now, if you can. With an encouraging smile, he returns to scanning the area.

Visibly upset at the violent reaction the smith demands What was that? What is the meaning of this. he looks to you threateningly as he instructs his apprentice to gather the girl up and prepare to return to the village. However, as she is lifted the girl wakes back up blinking.

The thunder seems to settle the smiths mind. Moving to his assistant he takes the girl from his arms and sets her down gently. Boy, you take those kids home now. Not direct and not to the north I think. You all o now and you go fast, but not so fast that the little once cant make it all the way in haste. Now off with you..

The other children quickly depart with many glances at the smith and Lirael as they make their way along one of the paths leding to the south east from the intersection.

Lirael
I.... I'm not sure. I think I can't decide until the conflict is bright to the open and resolved. I'm not a toy to be right over and she is clearly determined about the last statement.

Ultime regards the stormy skies with increasing concern. He looks worriedly after the departing children, clearly as torn as the smith was over whom to protect. But he agrees with the decision, and wishes them well as they hurry off.

Turning to Mina, he sets down his bow to rest his large hands on the foxkin’s small shoulders. Hey, he says softly but intensely, you’ve got this. Focus. He seems to heed his own words, staring into her eyes for another moment as if to will his words into reality. Then he flashes her a little encouraging smile, gives her shoulders a quick squeeze, and grabs up his bow again.

He steps up to Lirael’s side and looks down at her. You just let us know when you figure out what you want. We’ll see about making that happen, if it won’t bring any sort of harm to anyone. He seems a bit overwhelmed by the situation, but retains his resolve to do what’s right.

Wobbly on her feet, she looks up with wide eyes at Ultime as he murmurs his encouragement. The intensity of his gaze and the sudden, unexpected intimacy of the moment draws her away from her terror and uncertainty. Breath suspended, she looks up at him, her previously flattened fox ears perking up, her face opening. As he pulls away, she clamps her mouth shut and looks around distractedly, her cheeks suddenly growing rosy.

Just then, her attention is arrested by the priest's angry entrance. Seeing Thagren approach, weapon in hand, Mina screams warning and backs away, shielding the child as she does so.

Aizashi faces Malgrim ready for battle but attempts diplomacy one more time.
Malgrim, is this really necessary? Can't this be solved peacefully?
Apr 25, 2024 8:27 am
Ultime grunts loudly with pain as the hammer strikes him. But he keeps himself between Thagren and the others. Keep her safe, and see about that priest! he calls, without looking back.

To the smith, he says, You're under a spell! We're not your enemies, try to resist it! He moves warily, looking for an opening to disarm Thagren and tackle him to the ground.
OOC:
I feel like it's time for a roll, but not sure how that should play out. He's Fleet Footed, so that may help, but not proficient in hand-to-hand combat. If I had the chance for it, I would have him Focus and then roll to disarm/tackle in the same turn. Should that be a standard 2d6? He's specifically trying to NOT cause harm to Thagren, just keep him busy and not hurting others.

OOC:
Technically attacking without proficiency is at disadvantage. But that is to do damage. Tackling is a basic manuver in my mind so a standard test is fine. Of course I would not harm the children. This is all for the children. Even that one! and he waves at the cowering Lirael. I wanted her to know the true meaning of family and love. Something fey are incapable of doing. Do you know how they raise their young? How they are treated? I do! Ask her, ask her if she was better off with that hag or here in town. And now you stripped my illusions from her so she remembers that dreadful past and is frightened and confused. This is all you fault. How is taking away the pain and helping everyone to move onwards together as a community harming anyone. The only one upset is that hag because one of her things was taken. They view children as properly. Did you know that?

Malgrim's words tug at Mina's conscience. Had she not done very similar deeds at the Andar Correctional Facility? But... what she had done... it wasn't the same as what he'd done here. Right...?? Gah!

Mina quickly corrects the girl on her meaning

Oh, you mean Tothandreal? The one the villagers call the Hag? No, I wasn't unhappy. Living with the fey is fun. You play all day and sleep whenever you want, do what you want, go where you want. But I didn't really live with mother Tothandreal. She just checked on me occasionally and taught me things when she had time. I know she likes me because she was much nicer to me than to the other fey.

And what of the consequences then? The children who have been taken from their homes? Surely you must see that there are people who are suffering from your actions. Aizashi keeps arguing with Malgrim, trying to make him understand an other point of view.

I’m -oof- fine! he calls distractedly. Just get him to stop hurting people! Although Ultime is too busy to make a longer argument, his short sentence seems to sum up his sentiments on Malgrim’s actions and history.

He then puts a renewed effort into his struggle with the smith. Though Thagren is the bigger of them, Ultime is in his element in the forest. Taking his cue from the ground, he tries to maneuver Thagren over to some jutting roots and trip him up.

The priest grows increasingly impatient. I know the hag in question has stolen other human children and left their vile changelings in their stead. Do not lay at my feet her crimes. If you had not interfered I am sure I could have found and saved the children the fey stole from us. So the question is, why do you blame me for this when it is she who started it all. Years ago with that absurd fey practice of swapping babies.

As for the rest, I need not explain myself to the likes of you. Now surrender the girl and leave or face the consequences.

Get her behind a tree or something. I don’t know what that priest is brewing, but you shouldn’t stay close enough to find out. He draws himself up, resisting a wince of pain. And keep an eye out for that fey woman. I’ve got this under control, he motions casually back at Thagren, so try to get her on our side. He spares one last look at the pair before turning back to the smith.

Mina ducks down with the little girl into a small ravine. Ears flattening, she turns desperate eyes back to the sky, searching for signs of the hag as she grips the girl's arm "reassuringly."

Nothing here was making sense... The priest didn't like the fey... Some of them had hurt him... The hag didn't get along with other fey, either. Shouldn't the two of them have common ground? Unless...

Her terror overshadowed by a sudden sense of purpose, Mina turns urgently to the elvish child. Stay hidden. I will stop them.

With that, the foxkin dashes out at top speed, whizzing past Ultime and the blacksmith and past the glowing rune. Slipping by Aizashi, she throws herself headlong into Malgrim. She wraps her arms around the man in an embrace that almost looks romantic, bringing her gloveless hands up to the back of his shaved head and burying her face in his chest like a frightened child.

Malgrim looks at Mina with annoyance. Child, known you nothing. I have not attacked any of you. I merely am trying to send you away. That there is fighting at all is of you and your friends doing. And my mind is not that weak. But I suggest you Run! He shouts the last as a wave of magic flows into Mina as Margrim shoves her hands together locking them together with a click.

Malgrim

Before anything else can happen Malgrim shouts No Mother! You will not do it again! You ruined my life and as soon as I learned I had a sister I sword I would save her from you. You don't love her. You don't care about her. She is just another of your "things" like those poor confused children you warped and twisted behind you! This is unfortunate, I was not quite ready but I WILL NOT LET YOU HARM ANYONE ELSE!

Tothandreal

The hag stopps, frozen were she stands in shock. Looking at the priest, revealed to be a fey, that stands before her. Confusion washes over her face for a moment before recognition and surprise. Malagrimendel? My boy? But, , , you . You chose to be human! I felt the shift in you as you left the fey

Malgrim

Ha. You felt me reject the fey? No mother I rejected you. You don't even know why and dotless never will understand even if I explain. But perhaps now you have a taste of what it is to have something you treasure taken form you. When I matured and learned of my fey heritage I did choose the human path. But then my human sister fell ill. I tried to use my fey gifts to heal her but I had remained human too long and lost so much. I failed and she died. The revelation of my nature and death of their daughter nearly drove my human mother and father, that you placed me with as an infant, mad. Full of grief, anger, loss and betrayal they cast me out. Seeking the human changeling you had claimed as your own I wandered the feywild only to learn that he had not adapted well and been taunted and tormented till he was driven from those lands and fled back to the human world only to be shunned due to his twisted form. My brother, the real Malgrim, born human raised fey, and rejected by both died alone in the wilderness. I buried him and resumed his name and place with the humans. Finding peace and solace through faith in the good of people. But when I felt a kindred spirit playing in the woods I was confused. I watched her carefree frolicking but could tell she knew nothing of the joys of familial love and so I decided to teach both her and you a lesson. I told her who I was, proved to her the truth of it and invited her to the village. She accepted. And with that allowed my to help both her and the mayors wife who had been childless and longed for a child. It look little magic to have Lirael forget about you and the fey, she had little attachment to them. But you. You lost something of yours and could not accept that she choose that life. You saw her.
You know she was happy in the village. Happier than ever she was with you. Why couldn't you let her be happy?!?!?

God damn... At one point I was thinking that the situation is something like this and we had it backwards... Oh well, now I guess we gotta deal with this mess we got ourselves into.
Aizashi was astonished when the hag appeared. His astonishment grew even further as he was listening to their conversation.

Mina, Ultime, Thagren... We should regroup. This turned out much worse than I had anticipated.
May 3, 2024 2:49 am
Mina, hands bound, struggles to rise back to her feet, but she stubbornly refuses to flee. She glances at Aizashi as he makes his comment, then back to Malgrim and Tothandreal. Gently, tentatively, awkwardly... she rests a hand on Malgrim's arm in a soothing gesture.

"I feel your hurt...." she sighs. "You tell yourself you are trying to do right by your sister, but... but many feelings are tangled up in your decisions. If-- If you want to prove that you are doing this for your sister, to prove that it's not just about personal vengeance, then there's really only one thing to be done...."

Mina steps between Malgrim and Tothandreal and turns her head back and forth between them, addressing them both.

"You both must treat her like a person... not a possession to be fought over. Not only let her speak for herself, but... but actually listen to her ..." Her voice softens. "... the way you wish you were listened to, heard, and understood...."

Mina turns her face away to try to hide it, but there is something poignant about the way she says the last bit... Behind her words is a sentiment that is personal and intimate and ripe with grief.

As Mina stand next to Malgrim he flinches at her touch and back away as the fey hound move in, snarls and growls threateningly, to interpose itself between her and Malgrim in a protective manor preventing any further contact. As you speak both listen as they glare at each other.

Tothandreal

Foolish girl, she is not a person. She is Fey! I have always let her choose. That is the center of fey naturel. To be wild and free.

Malgrim

Ha, and what choice did I have when you gave me to the humans as an infant! At least I asked Lirael and she did choose. All I did was give her the gift of perspective. I let her believe, if even for only a while, that she belonged with the Graywind. I would never force my sister into anything without asking. Malgrim seems offended by your accusation but still glances at Lirael. The concern and compassion he has for her clear on his face. But as soon as he looks back at Tothandreal his expressions harden once again.

Mother Tothandreal never force me to do anything either but I never asked for all this fighting. Looking at Marlgrim and Tothandreal she gets louder She is right and wrong. You never forced me but you also did not ask me about how to resolve this. I do not appreciate and glares at Malgrim being enchanted. And You should stop putting spells on your friends. And I was not there for all of it but and her she looks to Tothandreal when you came to town to demanding thing most had no knowledge of and threatened them. You both proved you are true fey, proud and determined. But so am I at this point Lirael, under the eyes of Marlgrim and Tothandreal wilts back to a frightened child.

The small group of fey creatures you assume are the villages children continue to watch from the edge of the woods forgotten and forlorn of hope as the conflict continues.

OOC:
Before she moved to stand between Malgrim and the hag, I envisioned that Mina had been standing directly next to Malgrim, since they were literally on top of each other a moment ago. I'm cool with you saying that he flinches away in response to her attempt at a comforting touch, but as a fellow writer it's a little discouraging to have it suggested that she never touched him at all? I mention it because you generally seem to have a more "Yes, and..." approach to collaborative storytelling, and this strikes me as an odd exception.

I'm also a little puzzled over what you want from us in this scene. It seems like you might have a preconceived notion of how things should play out? ... Will Mina's successful persuasion roll come into play at all?

OOC:
PerendiaEshte will not be joining us. You can remove them.
May 3, 2024 2:40 pm
OOC:
Understood. I am still working on getting collaborative storytelling working with running a game. I am more used to declaring results after players declare intent/action. I think it was also a miscommunication on my part. When I said "Leaping backwards Malgrim stares towards the forest." I was thinking of a superhuman leap taking him dozens of feet away but did not clarify that. I will adjust the hound and Malgrims reactions. Thanks for the feedback.
May 3, 2024 5:01 pm
OOC:
Ah, gotcha. No worries. Are you able to provide us with any guidance as to what we need to accomplish in this scene? Technically, we did what was asked of us: we lifted the enchantments off the girl. I'm not sure how to convince the two older fey to cooperate and/or communicate better if they're not inclined to listen to us....
May 3, 2024 5:52 pm
OOC:
Treat is as a domestic dispute. Very dangerous to get in the middle of. You might be able to help but... You had a good roll and Mina is obviously a kindhearted character. You may be able to aid/arbitrate. Treat this as a situation similar to your negotiations at the smiths shed. No single thing will resolve it but you can alter the outcome.
There are still victims to attend to. You can focus on what you can change.
May 4, 2024 2:40 am
Well there you have it, your way forward. Ultime gives Lirael an encouraging nod for her strong words and stands up from beside her. None of us can change the past, but what we CAN change is how we act in the future. Like no more spells and enchanting people. He glances at Malgrim with those words, but also at the collection of creatures standing at a distance. As he starts to list items, he checks them off on his fingers. No more making big scenes in town or threatening people, he touches a second finger, and more checking in with Lirael before you act on her behalf.

He looks to both Malgrim and Tothandreal. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything that’ll make you two forgive each other, much less like each other. His eyes flick to Mina as if wishing her to contradict his words. But you could try leaving each other alone. Of all Lirael’s requests, that seems like a good place to start. He scratches his head, picking out a twig that was stuck in his hair and looking at the girl with a smile. They all seem pretty reasonable, I’d say. He looks uncertainly at the fey adversaries for agreement.

sure thing, Can they just be untied or do they need some magic command?
argh, Aizashi shakes his head looking at everyone, stopping at Lirael I'm sorry Lirael, I think I got swept up in all this.
He then faces the other 2 fey I think Ultime is right. All the enchantments should be removed, so that everyone can go back to their normal lives? And now that Lirael had a taste of both worlds maybe she will have a chance to decide what she wants without being influenced by either of you?
May 4, 2024 5:03 pm
OOC:
Aizashi just has to unclasp them. Their magic makes it so only he can open them
Both the fey, Tothandreal the hag and Malgrim the changeling priest (?) glare at each other and the party. Lirael peeks around Ultime's legs.

Malgrim
smiles and relaxes. Very well. I will do so. On a couple of conditions.

One. I will remove all enchantments on the villagers and Tothandreal must do the same.

Two. I will leave the valley and not return until after Lirael comes of age, in six years. Tothandreal must do the same.

Three. Lirael will remain here. She can stay with the Graywind's or live elsewhere as she chooses. But she must stay here. There is noting that can really threaten her here and the Graywind's will ensure she receives any care she may need or desire. When she reaches maturity as a fey then she can choose for herself to to be a changing, full fey, or a simple human. This follows fey law and custom and satisfies what I feel is just. That Tothandreal experience what she forced on others so callously in the past.

Tothandreal

No! Outrageous. How dare you demand anything after starting all of this due to your own pathetic self pity. She is obviously very upset and begins to gather magics as she glares at Malgrim.
May 4, 2024 11:25 pm
Seeing Tothandreal's magic and anger rising, Mina inches closer to her companions. She casts a worried look at Aizashi, pointing with her eyes at the binds on her wrists. She's unsure if he can unbind her?
May 5, 2024 1:25 am
Now hold on there, Ultime says to Tothandreal, taking a step towards her and holding up his hand. Before you act in haste, why don’t you tell us your idea of what the future could look like? Then Lirael can choose from your suggestions too. He steps back so he’s next to Lirael and puts a supportive hand on her shoulder.
May 5, 2024 8:21 am

Tothandreal

The gnarled hag glares at Malgrim but you see her glance at Lirael before grumbling something and lowering her magical presence. Fine, tiss a simple enough tale. True I have had several changing children, both those I share with others and those I take in. But all is in accord with the old way. I let the fates and the child decide. Not all my young were sent to live with the people and few choose to be mortal bound. I do not recognize this changling but his magic is akin to mine, he could be one of those I though lost to the mortal world.

You see according to the ancient accord there are a few fey clans that will devine if a new child of theirs will be a fit and if so seek out where they can place their young. To ensure the child is reared as one of the People their magic is bound. They can still unleash it but will grow into it slowly. This pact was set by the ancient ruler of the People and Feylord of all. The People benefit from an outside infusion of magic blood and they fey gain a touch of mortality to more fully appreciate the wild and free life we have.

I will admit the People have mostly forgotten the pact, but it still exists. Lirael was determined to not be fit for such a thing and so I raised her as fey do. I taught, I protected, I let her be free.

Lirael

Lirael listens without comment but is intent and occasionally nods as if remembering something and agreeing.

Tothandreal

But what he did and she jabs a finger at Malgrim Is not by the pact. He ruined everything.

Malgrim
Malgrim snorts Of course the People forgot. The Fey made sure they did. And I did not break the pact. How do you think I was able to do any of this. The pact allows for the young of the People or Fey to be taken in by the other if they so choose. I asked and she chose.
May 6, 2024 8:12 am
Aizashi listens to Tothandreal's side of the events with interest, watching Malgrim and Lirael react to what they hear.
After they both finished speaking he asks
Malgrim, why do you think the fey are at fault for the mortals forgetting about the pact?
Before anyone could respond he added and who began altering the minds of the other people and children, and why?

Malgrim

Psybermagi

May 6, 2024 12:08 pm
Malgrim

The fey told me the caused the People to forget. In my time at the Feywild I learned much. You should not blame the fey to much on this. It is simply their nature to hide at much about themselves as possible. I believe the leaders of the People may have suspected this could happen as the rest of the pact was so careful but they left this aspect open to fey manipulation.

The fey, well the ancient fey pact magic, was the beginning of enchanting the village.

When I enacted the changeling pact with Lirael it triggered a simple masking and memory charm. I took advantage of this to try and add myself to the changeling pact. I hoped that if Lireal choose the mortal path it would be opened to me as well. . .

But it seems my drawing on the fey magic at the end of my time sealed my fate to forever remain a changeling. Neither fey nor mortal.

As I had done it once it was easier to do again once I found Tothandreal had somehow tracked and was attempting to interfere with Lieal's chalking time.
The fey and changeling have always been gifted with charm. It is how we survive.

Unfortunately Tothandreal somehow used my meddling to further expand the changeling magics onto those children she could convince to aid her.

Tothandreal simply harrumphs as Malgrim's explanation

Looking relieved to have the binds removed, Mina takes a few tentative steps toward the miserable, shape-changed children. Can... Can we all also agree to unbind these children? She casts a worried look at them. They look like they miss their families... and I know their families miss them....
May 7, 2024 2:24 pm
Tothandreal

The had grumbles something then seeing everyone looking at her sighs Let the boy do it while I talk with my daughter. . . Then I will decide.

Malgrim seems a bit annoyed at this but relents and gotta off to help the children with Mina while the Smith, Ultime, and Aizashi sit a bit of from Lirael who converse softly with the hag

Malgrim prices better at breaking the spells but Mina's magic is better at sitting the children during and after the process. After a couple of minutes the village children, who all still have slightly confused memories but are otherwise fine, all cluster around Thagren.

Malgrim stands to the side glaring at Tothandreal till she stops talking with Lirael.

Tothandreal

I will leave my child with the villagers one week. Then if she chooses I will allow her till maturity to walk the changeling path.. Glaring at Malgrim she snorts happy?

Malgrim

Very well. I will remain in the village, should they have me. I will spend the time to explain things to my sister should she ask and help her recall what the cancelling pact his from her.

The two go back and forth a bit but come to a agreement. Malgrim returns his voyage to that of a middle aged human and heads back to remove the alerted memory charms from the villagers saying he cannot remove the changeling magics but the Smith and children present know the truth and can spread what they know if they think it will help Lirael it the others. He suggest they leave it be and the changeling magics will ease the memories to vague recollections that will likely soon find their way into future legends and tales.

May 8, 2024 3:39 am
Ultime takes one look at Mina and readily nods his agreement. He has a quick word with Thagren to ask if he’d walk ahead and put in a good word for them at the inn.

Turning back to walk slowly with the group, his brow furrows slightly at the foxkin’s slumped demeanor. Hey, he says gently, but with an upbeat tone. He slips her pack from her shoulders and lifts it up to his. We did it! YOU did it. Now we can go rest. And if they won’t take us at the inn, I’m sure Thagren will let us relax at his place for a while. We can leave for real first thing tomorrow. Or tonight, if you like. He looks uncertainly at some villagers in the distance, trying to gauge their attitudes.
May 8, 2024 4:23 am
Though there is no great fanfare it is easy to tell the town is both elated by the news that the conflict is over but also troubled somewhat by what little they know of the details. The fact that Malgrim does not speak out against you after your earlier conflict and Thagren says you helped to resolve things gets you a curious cutesty though several of the villagers are still a bit wary of you. A good meal and nice beds do much to ease the stress of the past days and you awake refreshed and ready to set out to your next great adventure.

Mina smiles bashfully at Ultime's praise and encouragement. Later in the evening, after they return to the inn, the foxkin pauses when she and Aizashi happen to pass one another in the hallway. She calls his name, then kneels beside him.

Aizashi, you... You don't need to feel bad about being confused -- about Malgrim, she says softly. Malgrim did act rashly... and it got people hurt. He did it partially out of love for his sister, but... but that doesn't make it right. Things aren't black or white, and people -- and, and the fey -- they aren't just good or just bad. Life is a lot more complicated than that... She pauses. But you, Aizashi... You have a simple, well-meaning heart... I am glad we met... She smiles a little self-consciously before she clears her throat and goes on.

I just wanted to catch you, to say that, in case we missed you in the morning. Tomorrow, Ultime and I will be getting up bright and early to continue on my quest to find my mother... I don't expect you to join us, but you are welcome to, if you like. I wish you the best, wherever life takes you... Mina holds out an ungloved hand to squeeze Aizashi's black, furry paw. As she does so, she magically sends him an encouraging boost of warmth and affection. She smiles at him.
