Act I: Prison Break

Nothing in the original Introduction thread is canon. That thread existed merely to give me an idea of what to expect from your characters, and to get you "in the mood" to play them. Everything from this point forward is IC Canon knowledge. You have never met each other before now. ENJOY!

In the kingdom of Talingarde, many crimes may send you to Branderscar Prison, but the sentence has but one meaning. You are wicked and irredeemable. Each of you received the same greeting when you arrived. You were held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with a runic F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’ and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the great and eternal love of Mitra and his chosen mortal vassals.

Condemned, you face at best a life of shackles and servitude in the nearby salt mines. Others might await the "gentle" ministrations of the inquisitors so that co-conspirators may be revealed and confessions extracted. Perhaps, some of you will be spared this ordeal. Perhaps instead you have come to Branderscar to face the final judgment. In three days, the executioner arrives and the axe falls or the pyre will be lit. Through fire or steel, your crimes will be answered.

You have all been chained together in the same communal cell dressed in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. Manhandled and mistreated, any finery you once possessed is either ruined or long lost. No special treatment has been given any prisoner – male or female, commoner or noble – all of the forsaken are bound and imprisoned together. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain. Your arms are secured to the wall above by manacles. A guard is posted right outside the cell day and night. Little thought is given to long term accommodations. At Branderscar, justice comes swift and sure.

Escape seems hopeless. You have all been well searched and every attempt to conceal anything on your person has failed. And if you could somehow slip your bonds and fly out of this prison, where would you go? Who from your former life would want anything to do with the forsaken? Despised, alone and shackled – all that you can do now is await your doom.

For each of you, your old life is over. For each of you, hope is a fading memory. For each of you, justice will be fairly meted. And who can blame fair Talingarde after what each of you has done?

Magoldor stands in the darkness, seething. He strains against his chains, not really to escape but just to cause trouble. He had laughed like a madman as they branded him. He intends to laugh just as hard when they burn him. Asmodeus take them all!

Jealousy brought him here. False-faced vermin claiming to be servants of the Dark Prince, angered by Magoldor's claim to priesthood, had given him up to the king's men. Exchanged him for a fat purse, no doubt, and their hides intact. Traitors! Unworthy worms! It was true, he had never been ordained, never endured the rites. But there never lived a truer servant of the God-fiend than he! May the Lord of Hell curse their souls!

Alyndra stands against the wall, arms hanging limply from the manacles above her head. He dark hair frames her dirty - but still beautiful - face. Her bright blue eyes are currently closed as she plays over the events that led up to her capture.

She had been so close to achieving true power, had in fact been in the middle of summoning a powerful demon that would grant her incredible might in exchange for its freedom. She'd been in the final syllables of her incantation when Sir Balin had butted in and ruined years of research and preparation.

She growls slightly and grinds her teeth, but refuses to let the tears come. She's beyond that now... she's no longer the little girl who had to stand by helplessly as she watched her father burn. Taking a deep breath, she tries to twist and pull, anything to try to slip her hands out of her shackles.

The chains and manacles hold tight, they're excellent craftsmanship holding firm.
Aug 31, 2016 10:49 pm
Magoldor turns his gaze to the squirming slip of a she-elf she looks like she's about to cry. Pathetic. The dwarf guffaws and looks around at the rest of the prisoners.
Aug 31, 2016 11:55 pm
At the sound of the dwarf's loud laughing, the guard stationed at the door walks into the cell block and bangs his baton against the bars of your cell. "Silence, dwarf! Don't make me come in there to silence you!"
OOC:
Each time you struggle against the chains, trying to break them, you struggle for about 10 minutes. It tires you out a little bit, so you'll take about 10 minutes to rest each time. Once every 20 minutes.
Sep 1, 2016 3:03 am
Harrison stares off at the others around him. The grim dwarf trying to break free. The woman squirming around, perhaps trying to escape? And there are others..., but there are the guards. Stoically, and with a burning hatred, Harrison shouts back to the guard. "Silence worm! You are here to guard us, not to counsel us. If you truly wanted to feel courageous you'd let me free and actually test yourself. Truthfully, you haven't the courage for that, do you?"
OOC:
In the meantime, while I'm stirring the pot, I'd like use my Profession (Blacksmith) to evaluate the manacles.

I lower my head, letting my hair fall back into my face as I roll my eyes. I'll be glad to leave this place if only to be free from these guards who utter the same threats, inflict the same pain over and over again. Dull, all of them. They know nothing. I pity them. They may break my body but as long as my mind is intact I will survive. Unlike the others I don't need to cry or scream or claw at the walls to express my displeasure with the current situation. I'll be glad to plan my revenge.

I look up for a moment, unintentionally making eye contact with the dwarf. I break it to take a closer look at the brand on my arm. Forsaken indeed.

It's not long after this whole exchange when a man you all recognize all too well walks into the cell block and up to your cell. Sergeant Tomas Blackerly...the bastard that held the brand to your flesh, and the leader of the watch here at Branderscar. He opens the cell, flanked by three of his men, and points to Alyndra.

"You there! That's the scum! Get 'em unshackled! And if any of you make trouble, they'll earn a thrashing!" Turning to Alyndra, he continues as they escort her away. "Today's your lucky day, scum. You've got a visitor! However you warranted such a fine lady is beyond me. Seems she wants to say good-bye. Now step lively. We wouldn't want to keep her waiting."

Blackerly sneers at the lot of you, especially Malgoldor, before he and his cadre of guards roughly escort Alyndra from the cell block. The guard assigned to the door locks your cell, then goes back to his post outside of the block.

http://www.mirvansmusings.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/tiadora.pngYou are escorted roughly from the cell block, and taken to a room down the hall. The room is about 20x40 ft, and has a long table positioned in the center of it. Sitting at the table is a hauntingly beautiful woman, with hair so platinum it's almost white, and vibrant, unearthly green eyes. She's dressed like she's heading to a funeral, and she's obviously been weeping.

"Oh, dearest!" proclaims the unfamiliar woman. "I'm so relieved you're alive!" She turns to Sergeant Blackerly. "Could we please have a moment alone, good sir? For pity's sake?"

Tomas goes blank for a bit and then quickly agrees. "Of course, my lady. For you, 'tis no problem."

After the guards leave, the woman's demeanor changes immediately. She drops all pretense of grief or concern, and smiles at your confusion.

"Have you forgotten me, dearest?" the unexpected visitor says with a smirk. "You may call me Tiadora. We possess a mutual friend who would like to meet you and your fellow cell-mates. Unfortunately, our friend is unwilling to visit you in your present, rather shabby, accomodations, so it seems you must break out."

At the look of disbelief that inevitably appears on your face, she says "Oh, don't be so dour. Just because it's never been done before is no reason that you can't be the first.

"If you can manage that, cross the moors on the outskirts of town. On the old Moor Road, you'll see a manor house with a single lantern burning in the second story. Our mutual friend waits there. That's all I know."

Almost as an afterthought, she says "Oh, he did want me to give you this..."

She takes off her silken veil and wipes away a few fake tears with it before handing it over to you.

"Here's something to remember me by, dearest."

It appears to be a fine silk veil of gossamer cloth. Only as you hold it and closely inspect it can you see small cloth patches of various shapes. You surmise that you can easily detach the patches in a few seconds each if you took the time to do so.

Veil of Useful Items: Detaching a patch from this veil causes that patch to become an actual item. One patch can be deatched each round as a move action. This veil contains: 2 daggers, a bullseye lantern (full, lit, shuttered), 50 ft coil of hempen rope, 2 sacks of needed spell components (worth less than 1 gp) and common clothes in PC's sizes, Masterwork Thieves Tools, Window (2ft by 4ft by 2ft deep), potion of Cure Light Wounds, 100 GP, a warhammer, and a Silver Unholy Symbol of Asmodeus.

Her message and gift delivered, Tiadora rises and the guards return. Immediately upon the door opening, her demeanor changes and she is once again a perfect picture of grief. "No! I can't bear to leave you!" She gives you a kiss on the cheek, and it is ice cold and feels somehow alien and inhuman.

Blackerly shakes his head. "I'm afraid it's time, miss."

Tiadora looks deep in Blackerly's eyes and says, "Thank you for letting me say goodbye. There's no need to search my dearest. You are such a good friend for letting me see my dearest one more time."

"Such a good friend..." Blackerly repeats in an almost mechanical voice. He seems to snap out of it and bows politely. "A pleasure madam."

As she leaves unveiled, Tiadora's eyes meet with yours one last time and a wicked smile flashes briefly across her face.

Three days, dearest, her voice echoes in your mind. Please don't disappoint me. With the visitation concluded, the guards take you back to your cell and shackle you next to your teammates once more without bothering to search you at all. None notice the closed fist of your hand containing your gift.

Xharin heard something coming from a stone reinforced cell to the west, and asked if either of the two of you heard anything.

I turn my attention to the Elven woman but say nothing. For now, I listen.
Sep 1, 2016 10:25 pm
Alyndra peers outside of the cage one more time to ensure they won't be overheard, then speaks to the other in a whisper, "My visitor, a woman by the name of Tiadora, told me that a mutual friend would like to meet all of us. We have to break out, then travel across the moors. On Old Moor Road, there will be a manor house with a single lantern burning in the second story. We are supposed to meet our mysterious benefactor there."

She takes a deep breath and looks around to make sure that everyone has gotten the gist of what she's saying before she continues, "To that end, she gave me this," she holds up the veil, "This contains powerful magic and will provide us with basic tools to assist in our escape. We just need to come up with a plan of escape first. The water is too rough and would be almost impossible to make it across, but the bridge requires a password to go through. Anyone have any bright ideas?"
Sep 1, 2016 11:02 pm
"This isn't a trick." I say the words slowly. I'm skeptical, but not stupid. If there's an opportunity to escape my fate, I will take it. I look at the veil, very nearly reaching for it as I consider what sort of tools it can provide us, and how.

"You say the bridge needs a password to cross. Is it magical in nature, or one that must be given directly to a guard?" Guards can be easily distracted or fooled. Magical wards are more time-consuming.
Sep 2, 2016 1:47 am
"You say we are expected to break out?" asks Harrison, not even pretending to hide the skepticism in his voice."This is a trap or someone wants to use us, and all we've been offered is a veil?" He laughs, mocking the situation. "I would like some proof of this. Release us. Then we can discuss a plan."

Alyndra sighs before putting the veil on display for the other to look at a bit, and to see the patches sewn in it. She explains the way to use it and what each of the items are. She further explains that she is skilled in the use of lockpicks as well and can unlock their shackles. "We need a plan of escape before we even try this. Come a time when there are less guards on duty I will unlock our shackles. I lay claim to a single dagger, a component pouch, and the lockpicks. You can divvy up the rest according to your skill sets, and we can keep the gold within it in case we need it later."

I can almost feel its magical aura. I've heard of such things, but have never seen one in person. I make a mental list of supplies that this veil is meant to conjure, estimating their approximate size, weight, and usefulness to our situation. I am not typically one to gamble on such strangers, but perhaps today I'm feeling generous.

"It seems we are meant to unshackle ourselves with the lock picks, change into these commoner's clothes, create a window through this stone wall or perhaps a wall on a lower floor, and climb down the side of the building with this rope. I will require the second component pouch. With it, I can daze or confuse our pursuers as we make our way out of here towards the bridge." That much seems obvious. "What we do after that will depend on what we face at the bridge itself. I can only make a plan based on what I know and see. It would be foolish to do otherwise."

Harrison listens to the others and agrees, "This plan is plausible, and when, pray tell, do plan to execute this plan?" Harrison also notes that there are not enough weapons for everyone, and that there's no mention of getting out of the prison.

"This plan will only get us out of the tower," he says ", but we need to work out how to actually get out of the prison. Casting magic at our jailers might not be prudent. Any aggressive action will only result in more pursuers. "

Harrison mulls this for a minute..."perhaps a distraction of some sort. I would love nothing more than to burn this place to ground. Perhaps we set it on fire, we could distract enough guards away from us to ease our disappearance."

"What I'm suggesting is that we move swiftly and silently so we can be out before most even notice we're gone. How to you propose we burn down the stone walls of this prison, and how will that result in less pursuers?" I'm beginning to suspect that subtlety is not in this group's vocabulary.
Sep 2, 2016 4:21 pm
"If we see a chance to cause a good distraction, then we can take it. Otherwise, we need to move fast and get out quietly," Alyndra says, agreeing with Xharin on this.

"Get out quickly and quietly,,,," scoffs Harrison. "And quickly and quietly through the courtyard? And quickly and quietly over the bridge?" He stops a moment to let the others reflect. "No, we need something to draw attention of the guards. Otherwise, a handful of peasants that arrived from nowhere will draw attention. I don't want to play at escaping, I want to ensure it. We can still use the window trick, although we'd best be careful. Magic can be traced. Also, maybe we could frame a guard, and release our new ally?" Again, he pauses a moment, and looks to the others.
Sep 4, 2016 5:42 am
Clearly this fellow is convinced his method is the only one worth considering. I suppose we should humor him. "So let me get this straight. You wish to release Grumblejack, frame an officer for the release, and set a fire in the hopes that we can divert a majority of the guards away from us. How do you intend to do this, and what is the time frame for this plan from start to finish?"
Sep 4, 2016 6:16 am
"I don't know about the rest of it, but releasing our large friend probably wouldn't hurt our chances of escaping unnoticed," Alyndra says, thinking that he'll prove to be a perfectly expendable distraction, and that the chances he would turn on them was slim, since he'd have far more reason to hate the guards than them.
Sep 5, 2016 2:20 am
Harrison listens to the others, clearly they think him arrogant, and a fool. "You'll do as you will. I offer my counsel, take it see you fit," he says awaiting the consensus while remaining chained to the wall.

OOC:
I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend, if it's something that you actually celebrate. You guys can continue to plot and plan OoC if you like, but I'm going to give you a general rundown of what you see through the first day.
The four of you (five if you count Grumblejack) plot and scheme for the next hour and a half, and things begin to fall into place in your minds, when the door opens. One of the guards walks into the cell block and looks around the room, checking on all of you prisoners. He spits on Magoldor as he walks by, and he smells absolutely rancid; like cheap whiskey.

Throughout the day, here is what you observe:

The guards rotate shifts every 8 hours. There are always two guards posted outside of your cell block, and they take turns patrolling your block every two hours: one actually checking on you, one standing by the door with a signal horn in hand to call for help if something happens.

If everyone can give me a Perception roll, I have more information to share with you. ;)

Alyndra pays careful attention to the movements of the guards over the course of the day, a definite plan beginning to take shape in her mind.

Being able to watch the same scene over and over must offer some kind of insight, Harrison thinks to himself. The routine is tedious to the point of bordeom, and Harrison has a difficult time gleaning worthwhile information.

OOC:
Damn...that Prescience saved you guys...
Throughout the day, you hear the two guards posted at your cell block's door talking. Most of it is meaningless chatter, but this little tidbit catches your attention:

"That Blackerly is a damned thief! That game was rigged last night!"

"If it's rigged, why do you keep going back to the gatehouse then?"

"The beer's passable."

A laugh is heard. "Drinkin' on duty! Damn, this place has gone to hell. Captain Callidan would have never tolerated that crap, that's for sure!"

"Captain Callidan...he left, what? Two years ago?"

"Almost three and since then the place has been straight down the shitter. That old wizard never leaves his tower. He stays up there reading his books and petting his owl!"

"Petting his owl? Is that what they call it these days?"

The guards enjoy a bit of a laugh.
Sep 7, 2016 2:10 am
" I admit, I am unsure as to how best to manage the guards. The tedium of this place wears upon me."
Sep 7, 2016 2:27 am
"It may do us all some good to listen more and talk less. I've been eavesdropping on the guards. They play cards and imbibe at the gate house on the regular basis. There's also been mention of a wizard that resides at the tower. We'd best avoid notice of the tower if possible. What adjustments, if any should we make to our current plan?" I turn my attention towards Magoldor and Alyndra.
Sep 7, 2016 1:00 pm
It is now early evening of the first day, with the time you've all spent plotting, planning, scheming, and eavesdropping. The guards changed rotation about 2 hours ago. Alyndra was told that she had 3 days...which is, ironically, when your sentences will be carried out.

What do you do?
Sep 7, 2016 3:19 pm
When Magoldor was first brought in he was frothing at the mouth, spouting blasphemous prophecies, until Blackerly's boys shut him up with repeated beatings. Now, as the day of freedom draws near, whether that means escaping this prison or 'freedom' at the stake, he has taken up his ravings once again.

"The faithful will shed their bonds. The accused shall devour the accuser and revive the harbinger.
The star of evil foretells victory. The shining magistrate will be troubled.
A time of plenty will end. The black emissary will burn. The king of lies will seduce the princess of the stars."

Let us be off. Free and dead is better than our current state.
Sep 8, 2016 1:11 pm
Three hours later, the door to your cell block opens and a guard stumbles in. He looks blearily at the four of you, spits on the dwarf, and laughs. "I hope they lllet me lllitght the fffffire, you shun of a bitsch..." the man slurs as he walks out of the room.

You estimate that you have anywhere between two and three hours to open your manacles and get free. You may begin when ready.

Chains still don't break, and you can feel the manacles start cutting into your skin a little bit (no damage yet, but any failures from this point on have the possibility of causing 1 HP worth of damage.)
Sep 8, 2016 3:27 pm
Alyndra shakes her head at the obviously crazy man and removes the thieve's tools from the veil and begins going to work on her manacles.
OOC:
Masterwork is +2, correct?

OOC:
Yes. However, you are at a -2 because of your hands being manacled together. The masterwork tools negate that, basically.
Alyndra's nimble fingers begin going to work, and she can almost feel that she has the lock defeated...and then her hand slips.

She does note, though, that these locks are simple enough that they probably won't jam if she really messes up.
OOC:
That took about 30 seconds to do. Alyndra may try again.

OOC:
Taking 10 won't beat the DC on it right now...but that doesn't really matter.
Closing her eyes in concentration, Alyndra goes back to work on the manacles, relying on her sense of hearing and touch to find the right positions on the tumblers. With a very satisfying *click*, she feels the lock open and is able to get her hands free.
OOC:
I'm only going to make you do one DD roll for each set of ankle restraints and manacles. WAAAY too many opportunities to screw things up for you...lol

You may NOW take 10 on every other manacle and ankle restraint, as getting rid of that "Restrained" negative puts you above the DC.
Sep 8, 2016 3:51 pm
Seeing Alyndra freed, Magoldor's whispered chanting starts to get frenzied, punctuated by cackling. His eyes bulge from their sockets and his beard is flecked with spittle.

The scarred man shall usher forth an age of warlords and the return of the horned one.
The raven shall mark a world of darkness and an end to the suffering of the faithful.
The mountain shall weep with molten fury, and the seas will run red with the blood of the usurpers.
Sep 8, 2016 3:58 pm
Alyndra makes her way around, unlocking the others as she goes and taking one of the daggers and a component pouch from the veil for herself, "Now, you may have what we agreed upon," she says, and hands out the gear that they called for earlier.
OOC:
You may now take what you want from what's left in the veil:

Dagger
a bullseye lantern (full, lit, shuttered)
50 ft coil of hempen rope
Sacks of needed spell components (worth less than 1 gp)
common clothes in PC's sizes
Window (2ft by 4ft by 2ft deep)
potion of Cure Light Wounds
100 GP
a warhammer
Silver Unholy Symbol of Asmodeus.
Sep 8, 2016 4:41 pm
Freed of his bonds, Magoldor reverently closes his hand around the symbol of his dark god. Surprisingly this quiets his raving for the moment, but there is exultation in his eyes. He hesitates a moment before grasping the warhammer, an infernal invocation on his fevered lips.
OOC:

Everyone agrees with Alyndra's plan to make a big noise and then ambush the guards...except for Harrison. Something nags at him as he ponders this idea, and then it hits him that, with every patrol or investigation, the guards don't enter the cell block together. One of them always stands at the door, with their signal horn in hand, ready to summon reinforcements if something were to happen.

Thinking about it further, he realizes that the guards are actually terrified of the PCs, based on the fact that every time they dealt with you as individuals, there were at LEAST three guards present...sometimes more.
Sep 14, 2016 3:03 am
"Let us take our positions then if we're going to prep ourselves to take on these guards. There's really no reason to dawdle further," says Harrison slipping back by the cell door.
Sep 14, 2016 6:16 pm
"If we can bring the guards close, I can cast a spell that should disable them long enough to prevent them from blowing their horn and bringing aid," Alyndra says, contemplating their options.
Sep 14, 2016 7:27 pm
I nod. "I was thinking of doing the same. Perhaps I can daze one of the guards and you the other long enough for the rest of you to dispatch them?"
Sep 14, 2016 7:36 pm
"Mine should affect all of them, assuming they are close enough together, but you can also cast your spell just in case they manage to resist its effects," Alyndra says. Realizing that Xharin is a competent magic-user in his own right, she gives details on the spell she is intending to use.

SURPRISE ROUND

The guard that walked into the block to check on Grumblejack is completely oblivious...and very drunk. As he's starting to say something to the "noisy" ogre, Xharin steps out and hits him with a Daze spell as Magoldor steps up, his warhammer burning with a violet flame, landing a solid blow in the dazed and confused guard's back. At the same time, Alyndra steps out in front of the door, loosing her Color Spray in the startled man's face right before he falls to the ground unconscious. Harrison charges the first guard, finishing him off with a swing of the flail, as Grumblejack moves forward to slam the second guard's head into the ground repeatedly until there's not much left that's recognizable there (an Ogre's coup de grace, so to speak).

100 xp ea. for this combat
Sep 20, 2016 7:02 pm
Smiling at the ease with which they dispatched their jailers, Alyndra peers into the room that the guards came through, dagger in hand, to make sure there is no danger in there.

The room beyond is currently empty. It would appear that these were the only two guards assigned to watch your cell block.

Each guard is also carrying a longbow with 20 arrows, a long sword, a chain shirt, a heavy steel shield, a leather club, and a key to some sort of chest.
Sep 20, 2016 7:59 pm
I pocket the key. "Which way?"
Sep 20, 2016 8:23 pm
OOC:
Going by what's on the map right now. Looks like a room to the east and stairs down to the south?
Alyndra ignores the chain shirts, knowing that they'd be more of a dress on her slender frame. She walks over to the eastern door, "Maybe a supply closet?" she asks, then attempts to pick the lock on the door.

Alyndra makes her way down the stairs to scout ahead, her footsteps echoing slightly on the stone steps. No calls to alarm are heard though, and the room below is empty and lit by torches.

Alyndra heads back up to the group, "The room down the stairs is safe for now, whenever you're ready."
Sep 21, 2016 4:42 pm

Sep 23, 2016 2:13 pm
Xharin moves to the door on the right, listening close, and does not hear a thing.
Sep 23, 2016 2:26 pm
I attempt to open the door.
Sep 23, 2016 2:31 pm
The door opens easily to reveal a barracks, with a dozen bunks and three off-duty guards talking and cutting up. While their swords and clubs are in easy reach, none of the three are wearing their armor...and none of them notice that the door has opened. Two of them are obviously intoxicated.

Grumblejack wanders into the room and Xharin shuts the door behind him. The four of you, standing by the door, hear some very terrifying noises...men screaming, the thuds of bodies being thrown against walls, and flesh ripping. No more than 90 seconds later, the noises stop...and the *thud thud thud* of very large footsteps can be heard coming back to the door.

Alyndra takes the key and steps into the room, carefully avoiding stepping into any chunks as she inspects the room, then goes through and attempts to use the key on the locked boxes, and if that doesn't work, she will use her lockpicks.

The bodies of the three dead guards in the room have keys on them as well...and there are a dozen locked foot lockers in this room...

With 5 keys and a few minutes per chest, in about 30 minutes or so Alyndra has opened up every footlocker in these barracks. Fortunately, no guards have come patrolling down the hallway or returned to the barracks, and you estimate there is another hour before shift change.

In these chests, Alyndra finds:

Chest 1: A bottle of absolute rot gut whiskey without a label worth 5 GP
Chest 2: A masterwork lute worth 100 GP
Chest 3: A whetstone, cleaning supplies for chain shirts, extra bowstring, and a small book of military regulations
Chest 4: A traveller's outfit, a finely made pipe (5 GP) with a good supply (1 lb.) of high quality shag tobacco (2 GP)
Chest 5: Hidden beneath peasant garb are two decks of cards (one regular, one marked) and a bag of 12 GP worth of mixed coinage)
Chest 6: A small coin pouch with 3 GP of mixed coins
Chest 7: A map of the nearby town of Varyston including the Old Moor Road
Chest 8: A small bottle with a hand written note: "In case of trouble - Love, Mom!" (potion of cure light wounds)
Chest 9: A collection of cheap, tawdry, crudely printed "penny dreadfuls" about dashing heroes, daring do, and amply bosomed damsels prone to fainting and outdoor bathing (no value)
Chest 10: Ink, quill, and a personal journal that reveals this week's password "Hesterfield" - the Warden's home town - and the details of Blackerly's illicit gambling sessions, including exactly when the next game will be...ironically enough, it's tonight in the Eastern Gate House (3C on the map)
Chest 11: A set of peasant clothes and a short sword
Chest 12: A pouch with 1 GP in various coinage

Sep 26, 2016 7:06 pm
Alyndra, cursing that she doesn't have a sack to carry this stuff in, looks around for anything that would help her carry some of this stuff out. If she can get a sack, she will take all of the coins, the outfit, pipe, tobacco, lute, decks of cards, the map, the journal and the short sword.

If she can't find a sack, she will take the sword and divvy out the coins evenly among her companions.
Sep 26, 2016 7:15 pm
I grab the book of military regulations, the ink and quill, and one of the tawdry novels. Preferably when no one is paying attention.
Sep 26, 2016 7:20 pm
Nothing in the room holds any magic to it at all, save the one potion.

There is a sack there, and each of the coinpouches can easily hold a divided amount of coinage among them.

Xharin can attempt a Dex check, if he wishes, to obtain one of the books without anyone noticing (it's gonna be vs. their passive perception)
Sep 26, 2016 7:25 pm
Once I've grabbed everything else I want from the room, I have a moment of hesitation before I grab one of the tawdry novels. I look around briefly to see if anyone noticed. If they do I will shrug. "Let's keep moving. If we're lucky we have approximately one hour before anyone notices the dead bodies."

Alyndra didn't get first pick because I posted first. She got it because she opened the chests :P
Alyndra stands there for a moment, journal and map in her hands, considering her options and then smiles and hands them over, "Sure, take them. A token of good will, if you would. Seems like we may be working together for a while, so it's best to be on good terms, wouldn't you agree?"

Tying knots in one end, he stuffs the items inside, albeit a bit awkwardly, and ties the other end onto his belt making a sac of sorts. "We need a plan now. I'll fully admit that I goofed on the map here, and got myself confused. It happens to the best of us....anywho...
Xharin will note that, in order to get to these barracks, the team had to move through a mess hall of sorts. The only off duty personnel that were taking a meal are already dead, so this area could, potentially, be considered a safehaven. The room to the south of the mess hall, though, has noises of activity, and the smell of stew and baking bread from that area indicates that you could find the kitchen there. Perhaps one of the servants can tell you the best way to go about it.
Sep 28, 2016 2:31 am
"Indeed. Our path to reach the barracks is fairly simple. First we must enter through what is known as the mess hall. This area could be clear as we've dispatched most of the guards already. The party maneuvers it's way from the barracks through the mess hall, down into the kitchen (room 11). Inside are two servants, working hard to make stew and bake bread for the guards here at Branderscar. When Xharin and Harrison walk in, and they see the weapons that Harrison is carrying, they immediately raise their hands and start cowering in the corner.

"P-p-please...please don't hurt us! We're just the cooks!"
Oct 4, 2016 3:59 pm
Magoldor walks up to the nearest cook and bashes the poor bastard's skull in with his warhammer. As the cook crumples to the ground the dwarf starts to go for the other one but is distracted by the food. He grabs a hunk of bread and hungrily starts eating stew straight out of the pot.

OK...I'm going to do something that I absolutely hate doing, because I goofed up and didn't explain what had happened very well... I'm going to railroad this scene so that everyone is on the same page.

First off, due to me misreading the map and the book (let's hear it for trying to do this stuff in between reports at work, everybody!), you guys have already been through the mess hall (Room 10) and the barracks (Room 9, the room with all the chests). Xharin, with his earlier checks, realized that the room to the south of the mess hall (Room 10) was a kitchen, and that there was obviously some activity going on in there.

In light of all of this, and in order to get everyone on the same page, I'm going to finish this scene with a brief "train ride" and railroad you guys through...then we'll be back on track. Sorry XD
"Oh...oh gods!" the woman exclaims as she watches Magoldor smash in the head of the other cook. As the dwarf starts eating, Xharin takes advantage of the fear displayed by the woman and starts making demands.

"Don't kill me! I'll t-tell you anything you want!"

Absolutely terrified, the woman rambles for a while, detailing that there are two other servants who take care of things at night, Gregor and Irena, and they aren't due to be there for another hour at least. She details that there are twelve guards stationed at Branderscar Prison (which seems vastly understaffed to all of you), not counting the warden and the sergeant. She mentions that Gregor has a habit of wearing his green cloak and leaving the prison at night, using the weekly password to exit through the gate at the other end of the bridge. She tells you that the password this week is "Hesterfield".

She also informs all of you that the sergeant's office and quarters are across the hall (room 14), along with the storeroom. The armory is the northernmost door on the left in that hallway.

The warden's tower holds Warden Richter's office and personal quarters, as well as a small library and the "Hall of History".

There's supposedly a poker game going in the east gatehouse (room 3C) that the guards don't believe the servants know about. The next game is tonight, and Blackerly will be selling his rotgut whiskey to any of the on or off duty guards present. To get to it, one has to climb up the ladder in the Western Gatehouse, walk across the second story of the gatehouse, and then climb a ladder down.

She continues begging for her life after spilling all this, clearly terrified of the whole party even before Grumblejack pokes his head in the door to get a whiff of the food...at which point she breaks down into tears and becomes completely incoherent.

Oct 4, 2016 6:23 pm
I make sure to step around the blood. This sort of raw physical violence is distasteful to me, but sometimes it is necessary to get a point across and as long as it doesn't alert anyone to our presence what does it matter? "Then we use her in our escape. Either as a human shield, or to lure the guards to us."
Oct 4, 2016 8:22 pm
Having sated his hunger as well as his righteous wrath for the time being, Magoldor starts to get his focus back. His incarceration and torture at the hands of the Mitrans had quite unhinged him but he is now beginning to get his bearings back, all praise be to Asmodeus!

The warpriest looks down at the cook he has slain and clucks his tongue. What a waste. A thrall is far more useful than a corpse. He turns to the blubbering woman and points his warhammer at her. "You. Betray us, and your death will be painful and slow. Do as I command, and no harm will come to you. I swear this by the Dark Lord Asmodeus. Forget Mitra. He has abandoned you. Your life is in my hands now."

Harrison brings up the rear as the group moves ahead of him. They are not loyal servants, but they serve my purposes, he thinks to himself. But they will do, and may sacrifice themselves for my cause. It is only fitting.

irvanovich sent a note to Phil_Ozzy_Fer
The halls are empty as you walk toward the front door, prepared to make your way across the courtyard to the gatehouse and crash the illicit poker game ran by Blackerly. Once you start to open the door, though, something catches the zealous dwarf's attention: a kennel along the back wall of the eastern gatehouse. From where he sits at the front door of the main keep, he can see that the kennel has two guard dogs currently lazing about. Everyone present can remember that, when they were brought in, the dogs snapped, growled, and barked at you as you went past. They could draw some unwanted attention if they were to start barking as you get close.
Oct 11, 2016 4:03 pm
Magoldor points out the hounds to his companions, particularly Xharin and Alyndra. The unholy symbol clutched in the dwarf's hand begins to glow faintly. He whispers, "Can you dispatch those hounds quietly from here? If so, I may be able to help you do it."
OOC:

Casting Sleep
Oct 14, 2016 8:52 pm
As Xharin steps forward to cast his spell, he feels energy flow from Magoldor's unholy symbol, and feels a bit more confident than he did before...it is as though Asmodeus himself is guiding his hands.

Arcane energy flows into the sand as Xharin blows it in the direction of the kennels. The tiny grains drift upon unseen currents, to fall gracefully into the eyes of the two guard dogs residing there. One lays down immediately, the other seems to shake its head for a second before yawning and turning in circles to drift off into dreamland.

Xharin knows that he has a minute before the spell wears off, and the dogs begin to stir. Best to use that time wisely...

Harrison strides over to the dogs, and one by one beheads them. Picking the leaking heads up off the floor Harrison returns to the group. "We will break these fools the way the weren't able to break us," he says to anyone listening.
OOC:
Harrison is going to engage in a little psychological warfare and use the dog heads as improvised missible weapons when we get to the where the soldiers are. Expect an Intimidate roll to follow the surprise "attack".

I step away from the bloody dog heads. Really, I should cease being surprised by the depravity of fools. Letting emotions and need for vengeance cloud all semblance of reason. There's a time and place for such a thing, but here and now is not one of them! I impassively turn towards Alyndra and raise an eyebrow.

Looking around the courtyard, as you make your way to the western gatehouse, you can see that there are two guards patrolling the walls; one on the western wall, one on the eastern wall. Their lanterns light up around them, and they don't appear to be paying too much attention to their surroundings. In fact, you aren't completely certain, but it almost appears that they are...staggering?
Oct 19, 2016 1:38 pm
OOC:
How far are we from them?
Oct 19, 2016 3:51 pm
OOC:
As long as you do not run along the walls, you'll be fairly safe from detection. Right now, you are about 150' from each guard. The only reason any of you saw them was the fact that they have lanterns.
Oct 20, 2016 3:43 pm
"Let's worry about them later and get this over with. They'll not see us in the darkness," Alyndra says, urging the others on.
Oct 20, 2016 7:40 pm
I ignore the guards and keep moving.
Oct 20, 2016 8:30 pm
Indeed, agrees Harrison. We have more important matters to attend to, but there is a lack of discipline in this place that is revolting. Clearly, proper authority is needed. He stalks of with the others in search of their intended quarry.
Oct 20, 2016 8:46 pm
The five of you easily make it into the Western Gatehouse (room 3b). There is no lock on the door, and it opens easily to reveal an empty room with three arrow slits in the eastern wall pointing into the entry way. A team of prepared archers could easily take down a group of escaped prisoners from this point.

There is a ladder that leads to the room above, just as the serving girl described.
Oct 20, 2016 8:50 pm
OOC:
Is there a trap door leading to the room above, or just an opening?
Oct 20, 2016 8:53 pm
There is a trap door there. It does not appear to be locked.
Oct 20, 2016 8:56 pm
I shove whatever dirty rags I have left into the arrow slits. No use bringing the rags out with me.

Oct 20, 2016 9:14 pm
"I'll do it." I trust myself more than this lot.
Oct 20, 2016 9:27 pm
The room above is empty, and it is apparent to Xharin that a skilled and well equipped archer could control the entire courtyard from this room. Two other trap doors lie closed on the floor, one in the center and one to the east. Two ladders appear to serve as the entry to walk the walls or stand atop the gatehouse.
Oct 20, 2016 9:34 pm
Grumblejack looks at the ladder with trepidation.

The sound of silence greets Xharin, and cracking the door item, he sees that it's more of a "murder hole" for if enemies were in the central gatehouse.

You do notice that you can pull the ladders down from the trap doors that are above you, effectively trapping anyone that may be on top of the gatehouse
Oct 21, 2016 1:41 am
I pull down one of the ladders and call down to the others. "No one here yet. I'll check the second level." I continue up the other ladder towards the second floor, presumably towards the card game that is supposed to take place tonight.

I don't think I explained myself clearly, and for that I apologize. You're already on the second level. The center trap door led the central room of the gatehouse 1st level, and serves as a room where a guard can shoot at escapees from above. The trap doors above you lead to the gatehouse ceiling/wall. One ladder has been eliminated.
Xharin, as you climb the ladder and open the trap door above you, you feel a brisk, cold wind blowing off of the coast...the chill is enough to make you gasp loudly for air. Fortunately, the guard stationed on the gatehouse roof doesn't seem to hear you, because he is grumbling about the cold himself.

I never should've bet roof duty...son of a bitch knew I was bluffing...
