Okay. So we've got 3-4 players. That's plenty enough to get going.
In the way if introductions, since I haven't had the opportunity to play with any of you yet, I might as well highlight some things about myself. Feel free to do so yourself, if you're so inclined...
I've been playing RPGs since the early 80s, starting out with the OG D&D Red Box...so I'm old . I've got a pretty eclectic taste in RPG genres and pop culture in general. I work in healthcare and keep pretty odd hours so I'll be on GamersPlane and DISCORD at all hours of the day or night. Reaching me shouldn't be too hard if you have comments or questions. I'm very pleased you all decided to join this game!
Speaking of the game... I'm still loading in a lot of the Character Class information so that'll be posting while we're discussing things. There should be enough information up to get a taste of what a particular Class is like/about while I'm tediously typing everything in.
This game uses the basics of the Fabula Ultima engine and expands on it a bit for more complexity. Fabula is a great system, fun & breezy, but I felt like it needed more embellishment to fit the style of game I intend to run.
The conceit of the game is this:
Real world players mysteriously thrust into the lives (and bodies) of their characters in a world that eerily resembles the game world of the MMO they had been playing the day of the new Expansion release.
Combat will inevitably be part of the game but the real meat of things will be exploring what it means to be thrust into this new world and the repercussions of living such a weird existence where video game/MMO logic exists in a seemingly physical world.
SO. Fabula Ultima relies on the GM and Players developing a world together. That seems to be a game killer in PbP so I've done most of the world design and once you get a good feel for the place and want you add some things I'm all ears!
At this point, if anyone would like to throw some character ideas around (for their 'real world player' or the MMO character they now inhabit) we can get started on getting the ball rolling. Play something you feel like you'd have fun playing and roleplaying!

I will play a Fox Tail, full slider to fox. So I expect some glitches? As a real world counterpart, my character was a miniature painter before the apocalypse. IRL I am hooked on Warframe MMO, and I love playing the Nidus warframe which is a healer/tank, so I guess I should go for a cleric? First idea was to make a monk. Personally I do not like the streamlining of roles in a party, it creates more dynamic environment when ie. there is no support class or a heavy tank, but whatever you people want. :D
IRL I have access to internet due to my job's nature so I can read (at least) what occurs any time of the day. Do we have a discord? Lately I collect discord channels like pokemon.

Just play what you want to play... Don't feel constrained by what you think you should play. The Class guides are kind of half written from the standpoint of an in-game perspective.
As far as Discord goes, I was planning on using the GamersPlane DISCORD under the 'other_systems' channel to consolidate things over there. I check the GP DISCORD pretty regularly.

I'm interested in playing either a guardian or a pirate. As for the race, I'm leaning towards Catfolk, so the character can look like a harmless cat but is actually tanky and reliable? :D The player may have a pet cat IRL that they really love. I'm not sure what job they have IRL yet though.

Oh, I forgot to mention... I'm tweaking the GamersPlane Fabula Ultima character sheet to fit this game. When I'm done fiddling with it, I'll post it and there should be a button at the top you can press to help generate a character sheet.

All those character options sound very fun! I'll prioritize getting the Classes you all mentioned up before loading in the others. Also, don't feel locked into your choices if another idea strikes you or you see something intriguing come up in another Class as I enter them. Things are fluid til we start play.

Most of you are fairly new to GamersPlane so if you need a few pointers on how to do stuff on here, just ask. Operating the site isn't difficult but can take some getting used to for a bit & knowing where to look for things.
Qralloq, one of our GP members made a few good YouTube guides to navigating the site. The link to the videos should be on the main page. Also, DISCORD is great for getting answers really quickly!

Yeah, I think we could have known each other in the game, perhaps we could have belonged to the same guild? But often for MMO friends, we may not exactly know much about each other's private lives. This would give the party a good reason to band together when the apocalypse happened too. I don't mind if other people prefer it another way though.

Sorry, I was busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to check things out. I will probably play a weapon master, either an assassin or swashbuckler. The Grim Reaper style seems pretty cool, KO-ing mobs with a giant scythe! :D

Assassins are great damage dealers in a lot of ways & Swashbucklers are good combatants with enhanced criticals and hand out Negative Status effects with successful weapon hits.

I'm finishing up the Pirate and Sorcerer Classes. Monk is next up to go in so it should be in for you to check up on tomorrow.

I've got a few more logistical questions:
What does the world around us look like? Is it a realistic version of the game, or is it clearly still a video game world? Do our new bodies look like real people or stylized video game characters? Do we see floating HP bars, monster levels, menu pop-ups and such, or are those things just behind the scenes?
Oh, and do we start with any equipment?

That's something we'll discuss once characters care a bit more solidly definite. Equipment should be fun and flavorful! Also, useful.
To answer your other questions:
•The new world will be as real seeming as this one...other than the obvious additions like monsters, magic, cat/wolf/fox people and the like. It's a post apocalyptic world that resembles modem day in a lot of ways but is crumbling, fading and wildly overgrown. (I'll AI up some examples and post em for you.)
•There is a UI (User Interface) that the characters discover and it does feature HP/MP bars, Monster levels, and a host of other information that a player would have access to. How it works is part of the discovery process. It's not a constant thing though; not always visible.
•Characters are on the stylized side... Not 8-Bit sprites but definitely not 'normal' human looking. The images in the "8 Good Races" drop-down in the Character Creation Thread are a good approximation. J-Pop and Anime influenced, as if made from the game's character creation screen, but with details the creep through from the player.

Guardian, Pirate, Monk, Assassin, Swashbuckler & Cleric are complete. Bard & Sorcerer need just a bit more work but are mostly complete. Druid, Enchanter & Huckster are under construction. I tried to prioritize the Classes everyone mentioned having an interest in.
Looks like a good group of characters so far. I'm looking forward to seeing them as a group in action!

I just haven't settled on what to give them. It boils down to a basic weapon, a basic armor type and a basic accessory with different names. I was concentrating on getting the Skills in and forgot to get around to it.
That's also for a basic character right out of the "tutorial" at Level 10. We couid start there or maybe around Level 20-ish (everyone having played a bit before the start of our game) and having some better/different equipment than the starting stuff. We can discuss the idea.

Yes, Dexterity was supposed to be Agility. I borrowed and adapted the Fabula Ultima character sheet that was already on GamersPlane and didn't catch that it listed the attribute name wrong. It's hard to see that when tinkering with the code 😂. I changed it to be accurate.

The way things are built, following the instructions in the Character Creation Thread, that'll put a character at Level 10...fresh out of the game 'tutorial'. If you guys would be amenable, I was thinking of maybe starting out with you all having played Elder Tales a bit with each other and maybe putting you guys around Level 21 to 23 when our game starts.
What does everyone think about that option? Or would you rather start out at Level 10 having played through the tutorial as a group just before 'The Apocalypse'?
I put up a good bit of the Summoner Class and will be finishing out Sorcerer tonight. That just leaves Druid & Huckster to go. I'll probably write up a bit about SubClasses and how they work along with a list of the commonly chosen/easily established SubClasses too.

Thinking about it a bit more, I think it would be more fun to start at level 10 fresh out of the tutorial. That way we won't have too much pre-existing knowledge about the game and the new world, so we can all experience it and learn about it together as we go along.

I think that's a consensus for starting fresh out of the tutorial. I think that does work well with exploring the world they've found themselves in with 'fresh eyes' but still knowing at least the basics of how the game would've worked back when it was a game...

The style of dress is ~vaguely~ fantasy European/JRPG but it's not uncommon for players to wear or use gear from other servers including the Japanese server. You could pretty much throw just about anything on Fren and be fine.
It's an MMO so how a player dressed their character depended a lot on A) what looked cool B) what they could get their hands on C) what worked well with their build.

As long as you have your character data down somewhere to refer to everything should be fine. Keeping it in the character sheet let's you reference it by clicking the button with your character's name right below the Rolls Button.
Parsing the Code can be a pain. I don't mind entering your character data into the sheet if you don't feel like doing so.
That brings up a could of other points. Character Avatars. Everyone finding one to their liking? If not, I've got a catalog of images that might fit. Barring that, I could try I "A.I." one up if anyone needed it.

I do have to ask what the equipment stats are, however, since Monk equipment doesn't have direct equivalents in the Core Rules.
Also, do we start only with the Archetype/Class/Race abilities laid out in the Class write-ups, or do we get those at level 1 and level up all the way to 10?

Following the Character Creation guidelines puts your character at Level 10 at the end of the guide. It's departure from the standard Fabula Ultima rules. Essentially, your character exits the "MMO tutorial" at Level 10, which is a beginning character. This is where we'll start.
TL;DR: Your character is Level 10 at the end of the Character Creation steps in the thread. Your character should have 3 Archetype Skills,3 Class Skills, choose a Racial Skill and 3 General Skills. 10 choices, 1 for each "level" gained in the "MMO Tutorial", and then the character is released into the MMO.

Ok, I just updated my character sheet with the appropriate level 10 skills. I "cheated" a little, as I got the Phantom Tail racial skill and got me one from another race.

The roll should be the same for a similar Assassin's starting weapon anyway... The equation is:
Attack Roll = [Agility]+[INSP]+1
Damage = [HR]+6 (Physical).
*Black Widow Combat Style adds her [Agility] die size as bonus damage.
*The Razor's Edge Warrior Archetype skill does the same thing, assuming you chose [Sword] type weapons to receive the bonus, so you'd add the die size twice to damage!

HR is the highest number rolled on either the [Agility] or [INSP] die.
Ex: the die roller gives you a 7 and a 4, the HR is 7.
Damage would be 7+6+Agility+Agility.

@Alepous I believe Agility is the same as Dexterity. But since all your attributes are d8, it doesn't matter that much! Roll d8+d8 :)

I think for the opening combat, we should keep things simple and see how things flow in PbP at a basic level but I'd be open to including the Superiority Point system or Blitz Combat as an additional layer once everyone feels comfortable with the flow of combat.

My starting weapons are Bronze Cutlass and Wheelock Pistol. Can I use either of those? I assume the pistol will be [Agility] + [Inspiration]? I'm not sure what the rolls are for the cutlass, however.

Atalanta isn't attacking this turn, as I am pretty sure the limit is one major action a turn and Laughing Taunt is listed as one because it is a [Skill]. Otherwise Atalanta would dodge to, because she wants to draw agro and counter-attack.

That's correct, you're limited to one Major Action during a turn ( Attack, Dodge, Guard, Inventory, Skill Use, etc...), a Move Action and any Free Actions that may occur.

Does anyone need assistance with finding an Avatar image for their character? I've got a few in the library I stored up for this game but I also gave MidJourney for more specific requests.

Ok, so... Dan Whooper has been AWOL from GP and this game for a couple of weeks so I booted him from the game. I'll autopilot his character for a bit but I'd like to ask you all whether you're happy with the number of players we have currently or whether you'd like me to advertise for a couple of openings. Some people prefer a smaller number of players, some a larger number. I'm having a blast with you all but I figured I'd pick your brains on how you feel about things thus far.

- Since it looks like the current party comp is Monk/Pirate/Assassin/Cleric, I'm thinking of going for Sorcerer. What's the roll for their magic checks? [INS + WLP]? Or something else?
- Is the stats for a Beginner's Tome the same as a basic Tome in the book (so [INS + INS] accuracy with [HR] + 6 physical damage)? Is the damage bonus here the +6 part (For Lamentation Syntax purposes)?

@witchdoctor I submitted a first draft of my character sheet! Rough concept for now is a middle-aged guy named Isbjorn who's estranged from a son he never knew he had, and wanted to connect with his son via the game! Unfortunately, when the Apocalypse happened he somehow got separated from his son and is now trying to find him.

Hm, I thought I'd put Explorer in already... Guess not. I'll get it in when I work on the Forums tonight. What it does is alter the chances for Encounters during Travel, boosting or reducing the chances of monster encounters and reduce Fatigue for the Bard due to Travel.

Atlanta herself is a newbie, and the former child of conspiracy nut-balls one step short of being cultists, so is unlikely to really know any of you. Maybe we did the tutorial together, but unless one of your characters is in law enforcement of family services, we would not have meet IRL.

Grace O’Bass is, in real life, The Grace of Bass. It’s her stage name which she legally changed to become her real name. Then The Three Graces broke up and years went by and her solo act, The Amazing Grace, didn’t work out. She turned to gaming and liked the char-gen feature that uses a web cam to play a version of yourself. This Grace O’Bass would be the best bassist in Elderscrollsville!

For NPCs, Piphany is making all sorts of impressions on Grace. But the mention of "rehab" shifted Grace’s impression of her favorably. (I think Piphany is not a fan of Grace though!)

Bonds don't exactly require permission to establish. Emotions can be mutual or one-sided (and thus very dramatic). Have a good vacation!

I put a little drop down in the Database about the layout & uses of the User Interface.

Having Blacksmith as Fren's SubClass would give him these 3 Skills: Craft Item, Refine Materials, & Repair Item. These skills would be necessarily limited to things a Blacksmith could make or repair and fairly simple things at Fren's current level. The next Skill he would have available for the Blacksmith SubClass is Recipe Ledger; this skill has (10) ten Recipe slots available for items he can learn to make. Recipes can be learned at NPC Blacksmith shops (for a fee, of course) but are retained permanently thereafter. Some appropriate monsters can also drop rare Recipes...

My vacation spot was probably similar to Belle in some ways. Rural, lots of orange flowers in front of farm houses (tiger lilies), and even one moment in which my wife had Piphany’s reaction to the manure smell.
I grew up around farms, to the extent that most of my hayrides were to help an elderly farmer stack bails as they were catapulted (sometimes missing the wagon), so like Grace, the unpleasant odor wasn’t overwhelming.

Anyone here ever hear of a comic about an MMO that’s about to shut down?I’m a teacher, and the comic is one of the optional assignments that comes with the reading program. I was thinking of it when Grace contemplated staying in the game world (but played it differently IC since it’s not a comic my character would’ve read).

That's a pretty heavy burden to lay on someone. I'm pretty sure that counts as an existential crisis! It's also pretty applicable to the PC's current situation. Thanks for posting that up!

I think Grace will love being in battle because her musical talent will actually work!
…and before I post, I realize I could just play Grace as knowing how to play without a Troubador roll. But I like coin-toss odds shutting her down, at least for her first day.

That's always the weird surreality of situations like this. One minute you're doing totally normal things and then something completely fantastical comes up and it's a struggle about how to deal with it. At face value? As a game function? As something totally different?

I drafted a couple of versions of the last game post & forgot to include the one with a description after Maxime's dialog. I edited that back in there for clarity.

I feel like that helps everyone keep track of the essentials (character HP/MP, opponent HP/MP, Status effects, etc. ). It sure helps me keep track of things and maybe helps give a feel of the MMO dynamics of things.

If not for Grace, I probably would be less reserved… though even my most reckless character would’ve held back vs. that thing.
Also, I was just looking over my magic and it turns out Grace can do a couple of blastly-magics against the monster’s weakness.I plan to start the healing song in Round 1, just so there’s a constant +6 HP to everyone (but me) at the end of my turn. Rounds 2 and 3, I’ll blast the monster with fire or ice—whichever hit him last.
Once I’m out of MP, I’ll join the melee.

Aggro is a function of attracting monster attention & sort of guiding it's behavior. Accumulating a high Aggro score draws attacks or attention from monsters. They generally target the Party members with the highest Aggro first. Aggro of 1 is a basic level of interest. A regular attack accrues 1 Aggro, a big attack (or one with an AoE effect) accrues 3-4 Aggro.
Aggro accumulates each turn (barring some skill or effect that removes or reduces it) so Grace starting her Anthem generates 1 (and only 1 Aggro, not 1 each turn) and then attacks the following turn now has 2 Aggro, where Arga throws a fire spell that generates 3 Aggro each turn he decides to use it will build up Aggro very fast.
Some monsters might flee if a Party generates a lot of Aggro on them quickly, other monsters might change tactics or even abilities when Adventurers they fight reach certain Aggro levels.
Warrior Classes tend to have skills & abilities to quickly reach high Aggro levels to keep the monster attention on them (because they have a ton of HP and defensive skills) so the monsters don't go after the glass cannons (Magic Users & Support Classes) so they can do their job and kill stuff or keep the party healed. Weapon Master Classes are kind of in the middle of that dichotomy.

The video seems to be about the band’s frontrunner’s mother being a fan, so Grace probably liked it because she can relate. Her mother is one of the four people on her Discord channel for fans.

When you gave a 'die size bonus' to damage, you don't have to roll it. It just adds the highest # possible on the die to the result. *[HR] is the highest die result on the Attack Roll.
In Raquel's case, her damage result would be:

Aggro is doubled using attacks tagged with a Damage Type a monster is vulnerable to. Between Isbjorn and Arga, it's going to be a battle all unto itself to manage Aggro and still do damage... Ah, the fun complexities of MMO combats :D
Also, I'd like everyone to rate a look at the grid to make sure I've got everyone's HP/MP totals correct.
Should I create a Thread to host a short-form version of everyone's character sheets? The custom one is definitely hard to parse to update things & I don't want to miss any skills or abilities the characters have as they level up so I can balance encounters properly. All I'd need is a brief overview of HP/MP, Def/M.Def and a list of race, class & general Abilities. Nothing fancy, just an index card style overview.
Also, I'd like everyone to rate a look at the grid to make sure I've got everyone's HP/MP totals correct.

Atalanta gained a level from fighting the Goblins; going from Lv 10 -> Lv 11 (an odd # Level). Odd # levels add the Race HP & MP to your total ( 6 HP & 6 MP) raising the total to:
76 HP & 56 MP
The next time Atalanta levels to Lv. 12 (an Even # Level) Monk HP & MP would be added (+8 HP & +4 MP)
*sone races have Racial Abilities that can add extra HP/MP and throw that off a bit but I don't think Catfolk have that as a possibility. Some Classes have Abilities like that too.
I think maybe you might've been adding Class & Race HP/MP together for each level. Its just one of the other, not both. 👍. That'd get some crazy high numbers really fast!

Fren needs a Roll for his Action of mounting the King Triffid; I'm thinking [Agility]+ [Agility] vs DC 8. It's big but moving.
Atalanta needs a declared action & associated roll.
After that, I'll make the NPC moves, enemy moves & stitch everything together in a post. After that comes everyone's next move, rinse & repeat.

Ah I thought that was the case. If a roll isn't needed, please just consider my latest action to be a normal taunting shout where I shoot the boss to get its attention on me. I'm trying to build up aggro before our sorcerers blast the boss again :D

Her Katana has the Stats: Attack +1, Damage [HR]+6
Fren's Sword & Atalanta's Bronze Fist have the same Stats, FYI.
Calamity's Pistol has no Attack Bonus but does more Damage at [HR]+8.
Isbjorn's Tome has no Attack Bonus but does [HR]+6 Damage. Heavy book & iron bindings must hurt!
Grace's Bass has a bonus if Attack +1 & [HR]+4 Damage. It's big but not as heavy as a mace or hammer, nor sharp like a sword. Thankfully, it shouldn't shatter like a real world instrument would.
These are all 'starter weapons' so they're kinda same-y. Once you have a little money & a little loot, you can change up your gear and start to have some real fun with equipment!

That's one of the things I've noticed with Monk, several of my neatest abilities require that I already have high agro to use.
If I Dodge to set-up Shadowless Kick, I have to already have the agro or its a 'wasted' turn because if they don't swing at me, I don't swing back and didn't defend anyone.

Shadowless Kick triggers when a Monk takes the Dodge Action. You do have to have Aggro to be THE main target but sometimes a monster will try to hit what it can rather than waste an opportunity. Monks are usually up in a monster's face and are often a target of opportunity even if they're not the highest Aggro Score.
Warriors do have a lot of Aggro-reliant abilities, tho. That's their lot in life... You just have to race the Magic Users for highest Aggro Score. Those Magic Users, however, can't take the heat.

Not sure if I get a +1 from the custom weapon skill or bard style, but I missed by 2 from the nat.8.
EDIT - it seems I reduce aggro by 2 when I attack, which is really not helpful to Piphany. (Though not as not-helpful as missing!)

Given that the Die Roller is being very fickle, here's a couple of options. This battle might be a good time to introduce the mechanics that allow you to manipulate the Die results:
Everyone currently has the initial (3) Fabula Points PLUS an additional (1) added at the beginning of the RAID BATTLE for a total of (4).
Invoking Traits or Bonds requires spending (1) Fabula Point and a well written internal monologue as to why the event is important to the character. Success on the re-roll isn't guaranteed, however...
Bonds are the invisible strings of fate and feeling that bind people together, for good or ill. They can get used to alter Die Rolls as a bonus rather than re-rolling a die.

Grace should have (4) Fabula Points. Invoking a Bond or a Trait should cost only (1) Point.

Since Calamity does have Athletics, she could use an Objective Action on her turn and try to free Piphany. It'd be an Opposed Roll between her and the Triffid but she'd probably get some help from some of the others who haven't gone yet. That might add to her Total!

Ah sorry, another question. if I take the sword Guy is offering, is there anything I should be aware of when I use it besides the fact that it'll switch me from ranged to melee? What are the attributes required for a sword attack?

(Might & Agility+1) is the usual default Attack Roll. Damage is standard for a sword [HR]+6

If 250 damage to the knight is the goal, Maestro’s Echo should do the trick! (I believe I inflicted 42 damage: 15+6 doubled. So 277, if I got that right.)

If it comes to it, Atalanta doesn't know their abilities all that well, so she'd probably Guard, Attack, or Laughing Taunt, which are the moves Atalanta knows.

Okay, post updated. And it wasn’t until I was writing my OoC note that I realized how stupid I was. That d6 was fine as a 5! I considerably decreased my odds of the reroll paying off. A dumb move compensated by dumb luck!

Since there're a lot of these adds, I was wondering if it's at all possible for me to spend a fabula point to get all their attention on me? ^^' I don't want them to run rampant and target our mages in the backline, but taunting shout is single target...

Fabula Points are there to make changes to the world. What change would you make to enable Calamity to draw the Fauns' attention?
Could be the geography of the field funnels them past her to get to the back line.
Could be that Calamity comes up with a formation that corrals the Fauns.

How big are the fauns? Since Calamity is only as tall as an average cat standing on two legs, and everyone else is several times her size, I was thinking based on physical look alone, she may seem like the easiest target to tackle down. That'd fit my identity "unassuming defender" too.
But if that's not possible, I'll perform Guard on Isbjorn because he's not the most healthy right now, and he probably needs attention off him to start blasting these spawns. If Atalanta's Guard is still effective on Isbjorn, I'll guard Arga instead.

Ok, so. We have Calamity spending a Fabula Point to funnel the Triffid spawn through her & performing a Guard Action on Isbjorn. I think everyone's actions are accounted for so I'll post an update a little later today!

@witchdoctor I finally updated my post for the Fab point usage and such. I am poisoned, right? Blue text seems to say I am, but the status report has Grace as ‘none.’ (If she is not poisoned, I’ll edit out that I’m-poisoned bit.)
Also, aggro question. My spell casting added 5 aggro, but I think Bard Style has this -2 aggro thing…

Suitable for tavern brawls, this combat style occasionally comes in handy during battles. Using this style, a Bard may reduce the Aggro generated by an [Unarmed] attack or an attack using an [Instrument] item by -2.

Looking back, the poison attack hit everyone with a Magic Defense of 9 or less, so Grace isn't poisoned. My bad. That Faun would do a lot less damage to her. I'll adjust it down. Without the bonus damage they do to characters with the Poisoned status, she'd take very little at all.
The Bard Style does indeed reduce the Aggro she'd accrue from an attack by -2 when swinging an instrument but it doesn't drop her overall Aggro Score. Her hits are Aggro free while using an instrument.

Thanks for clarifying! Updated my post to make Grace less worried about the hit, and as a result, also a little too cocky for someone who just blew her last fab point to hit with her minimum damage.

I'm okay with ignoring the second roll & just taking the 4 from the first roll and the 1 from the second roll. Not great but not a Fumble either. You can spend another Fabula Point to re-re-roll the 1 if you wish.

I must admit, stumbling on using a Status Spreadsheet when I started the first fight with the Goblins was a happy accident! I doubt I could've pulled it off without that. I'm glad it moved as well as it did and hopefully had a good time.
Balancing enemies in Fabula can be really tricky & I'm glad it didn't go off the rails like I thought it might.

So if I target 1 enemy, cost is 10 MP. Target 3 enemies, it’s 30 MP.
If I also take Tuning (via the human skill, Skill Practice), that reduces every spell casting by 5 MP.
So for Resonance Beat, is that 5 MP per target, or do I subtract 5 MP from the total (so it’s 5 for one, 25 for three)?

It's just subtracts 5 from the total. So it'd be 5MP for one target, 15 MP for 2 & 25 MP for 3.

By picking up a SubClass, you automatically get the starting Skills for that SubClass (usually around 3) and those are 'freebies' for choosing a SubClass. You wouldn't have to spend a level choice on gaining a new SubClass. You could certainly add to the initial selection of SubClass Skills though.

With the set we bought a couple years ago, I’ve only won one hand. My competition was my wife, my late mother-in-law, and my wife’s friend whom she’d known since childhood. To them, Mahjong is not a game; it’s culture.
And don’t even get me started on the unforgettable butt-kicking I got playing Xiangqi (Chinese chess) vs. my wife’s grandfather…!

Grace likes the boots(’ style). Not that they will necessarily go to her, but still, if there was one item to go on a selfish IC wishlist, it’s the boots.

I think I forgot to pick one other class feature aside from another rank of Frost Spear, so I'll take Humans' Lucky for my Insight stat.

@Alepous The items Fren used the Appraise skill on are the crafting materials. Most of them are uncommon or rare materials, as befitting the loot from a rarer monster type. Fren doesn't have any Recipes that call for them just yet but maybe he can pick some up once they're in Mound City...

Heh, I updated mine with the original model I’ve been using. That one isn’t good at making multiple characters in the same scene though and it didn’t understand what an overgrown overpass was.

There's a Performer SubClass (it's a Service SubClass) with a lot of Specialties depending on what kind of Performer you'd want to be. Musician is probably the one Raquel would want, it has a couple of Skills in common with the Bard Class but is mainly a way for non-Bards to play music or perform in some way.

I’m thinking that, from the Belle experience, Grace wants to put that star-power into practice. Not sure if there’s a subclass that plays off of that (in a way that Bard cannot).

You're correct. Performer is pretty much useful only for a non-Bard. Bards have the option of taking Performer if they want to do something non-musical, like Dancer or Novelist or Poet. If a Bard wants to pursue the star-power there's the Diva or Idol SubClasses but they're RolePlay SubClasses and take more to obtain than Production or Service SubClasses.
If that's something Grace wants to pursue, I'm more than happy to craft that journey!

I like both! "Idol" is probably more appropriate given her charms working mostly on little girls, and also her acknowledgement that she regrets who she had become in real life. She probably was a diva in real life (albeit in a middle-sized fish in a small pond way). I could see "Idol" as an attempt to move away from her old self while simultaneously trying to achieve fame.

Idol is a Specialty of Diva so she'd have to search out the quest line for Diva and once she has the Diva SubClass she can access the quest line to elevate to Idol.

Nothing jumped out to me, which is probably more a 'me' issue than anything else.
Work has tried to crush my soul lately. Our new hire has been out more than she's been present and I have to cover her position when she is out, while still doing my job as well. Of course since her position requires being at a specific desk, all the tools I usually work with are in another room and I cannot handle some of the documents because they are confidential and her desk is open.

I definitely understand the workload interfering with having any kind of free time. At least I get to enjoy the occasional downtime at work and I often post on GP then.
There's still about half of the items that haven't been ID's yet so maybe one of them might tickle Taylor's fancy. If not, there's probably shops in the City where you can find new gear.

So I'm a long haired, scruffy, mid 50's "old dude" :) Not playing any MMO currently, but was heavily playing WoW for years, plus many other MMO along the way.

Welcome, @DrifterDwarf! I never played an MMO (or D&D), but regardless, this game’s a blast! I think the most surprisingly humorous aspect is hearing NPCs saying "HP" and such, so gaming terms are used in-character.

Thanks for the welcome. This game really is the opposite of how I normally play RPG. Normally it is about being "in character" as you said and keeping the meta gaming to a minimum, separating out of character game mechanics from in character. This is exactly the opposite, which is really what sucked me in.
What kind of character? Not 100% sure, but one thing common with my MMO and RPG characters is usually I go front line heavy armor. WoW my mains were all tanks (protection pally, warrior, bear druid) and my RPG are often melee clerics or fighters. I haven't looked over the skills yet, but if there is a skill to throw your shield captain america style, that might cinch it for me.

This is definitely a game where players (and to some extent NPCs) are aware of the 'video game logic' that drives the world. There are things that are 'character facing mechanics' like HP/MP, Aggro, Ability names, Class/SubClass, general MMO stuff, etc. but there's also 'player facing mechanics' that are mainly the Fabula Ultima mechanics like attribute die size, Bonds, Fabula Points, etc... Player facing mechanics are strictly an OOC element while character facing mechanics are freely discussed in character.
A LOT of this game is RP and exploring the ideas of what it means to be someone trapped in a new world, in a different body and in different circumstances. Are your circumstances better for being transported to a new world or worse? How do you deal with being cut off from everyone you've known outside of Elder Tales? What do you do when you're suddenly divorced from your burdens and responsibilities back on 21st Century Earth while also being suddenly bereft of its familiarity and comforts? How old were you when this happened and how do you deal with the loss of family? What does it mean to be an average gamer who suddenly gains superhuman abilities? These are the kinds of questions we'll explore while trying to find a new path in a familiar, yet still alien, world.

For the time being, I've got my tiny mechanical heart set on a Ritian Huckster with the Detective Subclass. Still gotta see if I can make that concept really shine though (and double-check the PC roster to make sure we're not drowning in Support).

Huckster isn’t in play yet, and I think class-wise we’re like 1 or 2 in each category. So as far as I’m concerned, just play the class you want.

• a Human Assassin
• a Human Bard
There's quite a a cast of additional Adventurers tagging along to fill some gaps in the Party so don't feel like you have to pick something just for Party balance. Play what you want and leave it to me to plug any holes that might crop up.
* As an aside, there's a lot of possible variation within each class that doubling up wouldn't be much of a problem.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been kicking the Dwarf Guardian around. Heavy metal dwarf - sword and board (or ax) has always been a favorite of mine, starting way back (when the rules were carved in stone tablets). I saw mention of a paladin, but that does not seem to be playable.
I've read everything up through your giant plant raid, really awesome stuff and I am completely intimidated. I will definitely have to up my writing game and my AI art is not even close to what you guys are doing. witchdoctor's game posts and everyone else's player post are really incredible.
The raid was very exciting to read and honestly felt like some of the raids I've been in, including the bad part where tanks have no hope of holding aggro and end up being ineffective. Doesn't feel like they have the tools to do the job, which honestly is like every MMO I've ever tried to tank for in real life, but tends not to be fun for the tank.
Got a full day today, so I probably won't be able to work on the character until late.

Everyone has been excellent with writing and posts but no need to be intimidated. The A.I. art is definitely a boon to this game in particular though some people (rightfully)have issues with the process. If you need a bit of character art, a couple of us can help out with that. Generally all we'd need is a description or an image similar to what you're looking for.
Paladins are a Class on the European server that replace Pirate and are specific to characters generated on that server. They trade offensive power & overall HP for dabbling some in minor healing magic and special attacks that do Light type damage. Most servers have a Class or two with local cultural flavor (Japan has the Samurai & Shrine Priest, America has the Huckster, China has a Wuxia, etc...) I didn't detail them bc 12 Classes was a lot to lay down already & there's not much info on them. It's not impossible for someone to play one but I haven't laid down the framework for them just yet.

As long as you've settled on a concept, I'd be total fine with the new folks submitting a blank Character Sheet (with a character name & Avatar, even if it's just a placeholder) and editing in the details later. That way, you can jump right into RP if you want.

Bonds are a way to represent teamwork or the extra "oomph" provided by working with people who you're close to & have an emotional connection with...even if that emotion is a negative one. You'd try just that much harder to save a loved one or friend; on the flip side, you'd put more passion behind trying to strike a hated enemy.

I've submitted my Dwarven Guardian. I still need to work out an image for him, but the other details are in place I think. Have not yet chosen a sub class. Would probably go with blacksmith, although I know there is already one in the game. May just not bother with it yet.

Dwarves are one of only two races that have "steampunk" inspired character elements. Metallic hands & legs aren't uncommon, lenses or goggles to replace one or both eyes are prestige items.
Sounds like could start the character out with a metallic hand. Is it also possible to start with goggles? it mentions "prestige" items and didn't know if that would be considered available at the start.

Hokie-doke. Huckster stuff notwithstanding, the character is up for review now (at Lvl 10, since no statements were made about catching us up to the main party).

New characters do start at level 10, for now... This isn't like a lot of other PbP games where advancement is pretty stagnant. Like in actual MMOs, early levels fly by pretty fast & it's the mid to high levels that really take a while...tho I guess it depends on the choices you all make & paths you take.

There's quite a a cast of additional Adventurers tagging along to fill some gaps in the Party so don't feel like you have to pick something just for Party balance. Play what you want and leave it to me to plug any holes that might crop up.
* As an aside, there's a lot of possible variation within each class that doubling up wouldn't be much of a problem.

I'm just interpreting the boots' magic properties as to why she's still standing when everyone else got tossed about.
10 is a good number. PbP let's be juggle a lot of scenes and players. I've come to enjoy large numbers of players in PbP, whereas I'd NEVER try that at a table game! Plus, the source material features and ensemble cast so it's not unprecedented.
@Drifter: The top height for character models is 190cm so I can see that being the max height for a Dwarven character. They probably start at a lower average height out of some sense if tradition. A 190cm Dwarf would be one WIDE dude!

Years ago, Colin Park suddenly deleted Punchfist Fistpunch, his high level Human DPS monk, in order to escape from gaming addiction and finish his college degree, after a disastrous first year. When his online friends contacted him to see if he had had some kind of breakdown, he created a character so unplayable (especially solo) and unappealing he wouldn't be tempted to jump back in, but that would let him log in and say his goodbyes.
Now, many years later, with a Masters of Sociology under his belt, and a cushy but meaningless job as a corporate culture consultant, he heard about a really, really dramatic new patch, and thought... what could be the harm in taking a look? Max Hagar was born in the hills of southern Ohio to meager means. His father was an MP in the Army and after 10 years of service got out and moved his family to Columbus to provide a better life and education for his family. This where Max encountered Elder Tales. All the kids were playing it. He followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Army to be an MP right out of High School. The structure of the Army was to much for him and he left after his 4 year tour. He always loved going back to family home in the hills to visit his Grandparents. This is where he heads after his exit from the Army. He loves the freedom of off grid living. Luckily with the invent and advancement of wifi he is able to keep in touch with his parents still in Columbus. He hears about the reboot of Elder Tales and decides to jump on and create a new character and models him after his wolf/husky mix Brophy. The next thing he knows he is Brophy a full slider Wolf Fang Swashbuckler.

In between working on researching medieval sculpture for his art thesis and panicking over the realization that he was probably heading straight for a life of flipping burgers after graduation; Jeremy Ulman liked to clear his mind by trying to hunt down and capture rare and unusual creatures as his Elder Tales character Colin Stubblebeard. With dark humor he notes that he may have ended up in a better place economically following the Apocalypse, given that some of his shop class skills are suddenly marketable. Whether the healthcare is better or worse is still up in the air, though.

I had actually wondered if Piphany had killed a few people, since the narrative was that we were two of six playing the tutorial, and she was maniacally laughing while looking like Death Personified (as a grimdark sailor scout).
But Grace was warily giving her the benefit of the doubt.
Also… "Sailor Bloodmoon." That’s what the name would be… of a grimdark sailor scout. Sorry. It just popped in my head and I didn’t want to cringe alone.

People react to stress in different ways. Piphany has never struck anyone as particularly stable...even at first glance. It might've been Grace's presence and calm that kept her from going over the edge. Lucky for Adana and Jean Louis that was the case...and lucky for Piphany, too.

It's impressive if you've been writing everything from your phone this entire time. I'm also looking to buy a new laptop as my alienware died recently. The prices these days aren't so bad. I still prefer a desktop, but I might be travelling a lot soon so I don't really have a choice.

To recap: the Party (original PCs & the DMPC group) are all together in the center of things. The Ambush PK Crew are all together on the far side of the Dead Zone, opposite the Gate.
The Gate is on one end of the road, The PK Crew is on the opposite end of that road and (most) of the PCs are stuck right in the middle of the two.
We'll start the action with my next post so feel free to 'chew the scenery a bit if you'd like.

Depending if/when I’m free to make a coherent post prior to action, I may have Grace make a futile attempt to talk the bad guys down (with a murder-shaming probably more likely to provoke them into doubling down on their own asshattitude).

Learning by doing works for me (in part because I hate reading rules), but also, how you roll in Fabula Ultima is a nice, simple concept: add the two relevant stat-dice.

Rolling Dice:
>>>A vast majority of the rolls you make with be a simple two-dice plus/minus modifiers roll vs. a Difficulty Number set by the GM. The dice rolled are determined by a combination of Attribute+Attribute and which attributes are chosen depends on the action taken.
>>>The dice involved are d6, d8, d10 & d12. The type of die rolled correspond to the ones chosen for a particular Attribute chosen during character creation.
Attack Rolls:
>>>One of the more common types of rolls made, an Attack Roll helps determine the outcome of a particular round of Combat. Different weapons and different attack styles require different combinations of dice. A Sword may call for [Dex]+[Might], a Bow may call for [Dex]+[Dex], an attack spell like Flare Arrow may call for [INS]+[Will]. When you make an Attack Roll (also called a Magic Attack Roll for Spells) you roll one die of each Attribute called for. Add or subtract modifiers from the total after the two dice are rolled.
Example:

Damage Roll:

Criticals:

Guard: This Action braces your character for damage and allows them to cover for another character. By declaring a GUARD Action, your character becomes [Resistant] to all damage types (taking only half damage from sources) until the beginning of their next turn. You may also declare the Guard Action and choose another character. Your character takes any damage inflicted on the character chosen to Guard as well as damage inflicted on your own character. AoE damage cannot be soaked this way.
Inventory: This covers any Action that involves external items. Using a potion, retrieving a weapon from your Inventory, equipping a weapon or other item you have stored on your personal Inventory. Armor may not be equipped this way, however.
>>> Use of the retrieved item may require an additional Action, or not, depending on the item in question.
Move: ThisAction allows a character to cover a lot of distance between themselves and a target. By selecting this Action, a character may reduce the distance between them and a target formerly at Long Range into Medium Range.
Objective:This Action covers a variety of options that may arise in situations of urgency that do not require an Attack Roll. Retrieve the crown from across the room, throw the rusty lever, swing across a bottomless crevice etc.
Skill/Spell: This Action involves the use of a Skill or casting of a Spell that does not require an Attack Roll but may require another type of Roll. Some examples are using the Hide Skill, casting Heal, etc.
Study: By taking a Study Action, you can attempt to learn details about a setting, scene, enemy or opponent. Some Abilities can trigger an automatic Study Roll but most of the time it is an actively chosen Action.
>>>When using the Study Action on an enemy or opponent, details such as Total HP/MP, Vulnerabilities/Resistances, Tags, etc. may be determined. STUDY Actions require a roll, usually INS+INS, vs. a Difficulty Number. A roll higher than the DC may yield additional information at the GMs discretion.
Initiative:
>>>In standard RAW Fabula Ultima, Initiative is a Group Roll (choose one character to roll with all others assisting) but that's not going to work well in PbP and slow things down.
>>>Instead, we're just using individual Initiative, rolling DEX+INS and sticking with whatever number comes up as the character's turn in the Initiative order for the rest of the Combat. Inventory: This covers any Action that involves external items. Using a potion, retrieving a weapon from your Inventory, equipping a weapon or other item you have stored on your personal Inventory. Armor may not be equipped this way, however.

Move: ThisAction allows a character to cover a lot of distance between themselves and a target. By selecting this Action, a character may reduce the distance between them and a target formerly at Long Range into Medium Range.
Objective:This Action covers a variety of options that may arise in situations of urgency that do not require an Attack Roll. Retrieve the crown from across the room, throw the rusty lever, swing across a bottomless crevice etc.
Skill/Spell: This Action involves the use of a Skill or casting of a Spell that does not require an Attack Roll but may require another type of Roll. Some examples are using the Hide Skill, casting Heal, etc.
Study: By taking a Study Action, you can attempt to learn details about a setting, scene, enemy or opponent. Some Abilities can trigger an automatic Study Roll but most of the time it is an actively chosen Action.
>>>When using the Study Action on an enemy or opponent, details such as Total HP/MP, Vulnerabilities/Resistances, Tags, etc. may be determined. STUDY Actions require a roll, usually INS+INS, vs. a Difficulty Number. A roll higher than the DC may yield additional information at the GMs discretion.

Also, it’s worth knowing whether Grace will be within the archer’s reach (or if anyone else is within sword’s reach of Raquel).

I didn't deduct for the Summon because Colin activated it before the combat really started. I gave everyone a pass on the costs of things activated before the Combat but when I update for the second half of the first round I'll deduct for things used, like Colin's Arcane Blade.

Helene wrecked a much larger area. I'm not in one of the areas directly hit but we got a lot of healthcare overflow from the affected areas since we still had everything functioning. That overflow is one reason why my posting has slowed down a bit.

FabU has different rolls for different situations. Some of the examples it gives are Ins/Wil for negotiations, Wil/Wil for an earnest appeal, and Str/Wil for trying to intimidate someone with physical force.

This is tough. Clara would not be able to just stand by and watch Grace being killed. Her instinct would be to charge forwards and protect Grace and Raquel, but I'm not sure about the relative distance and whether she could make it in one turn. I'm also running out of ideas to rally the crowd. Even if we complete the clock, seems like they wouldn't reach the PK party in time before our team was harmed?

I think finishing the clock is worth it.
Surviving Turn 3 will still be tough. Not sure if finishing the clock on a higher initiative than the enemy prevents them from attacking.

If not, you can do a bond invoke for a flat bonus, if you have a relevant positive bond. (I believe only Grace had already spent 2 points prior to this turn!)

The dice can be fickle but Fabula Ultima isn't nearly as punishing for Fumbles or Criticals as some games can be. They give a lot of versatility to play by offering a variety of effects through opportunities rather than just relying on damage bonuses. Narratively, I like that a lot better.

@witchdoctor Are there other moves that can move the clock? I’m trying to do something bard-like, but I don’t want to just do that for the sake of rolling 2d10.
So if it’s INSP + WILL no matter what, I’ll just RP the personality into that. But if I can use other dice to rally the crowd, such as perform with AGIL + INSP or if there are WILL + WILL and INSP + INSP options, it might be good to know that.

So if it’s INSP + WILL no matter what, I’ll just RP the personality into that. But if I can use other dice to rally the crowd, such as perform with AGIL + INSP or if there are WILL + WILL and INSP + INSP options, it might be good to know that.

There's not really a Move List or anything. It's up the player to come up with some kind of explanation for the Attribute combo they use. They could physically push the crowd by using MIGHT+MIGHT, for example.

Wondering what "shaken" actually means for Max. Rules say something general like "reduces the wisdom dice by 1 size".
A fear effect was mentioned for the pirate, but doesn't mention that Max is afraid, which he would never be - its a cheesy video game pirate, unless the game system actually invokes some loss of control like we see in real games where the player isn't afraid but the avatar won't respond.
I'm probably going to play this like if Max real world ran into a solid wall - not concussion level impact, but kind of "what the hell was that".

@DrifterDwarf don’t forget that you can invoke a trait (like what you wrote for the guilt/relief description) at the cost of a Fabula Point for a re-roll.
My last re-roll was worse than the original, but with your 3, there’s nowhere to go but up. (Well… besides a critical fumble.)

When I was in Japan (Hokkaido), there was a melon farm-girl (woman, really) who has to be one of the most excessively polite total strangers I’ve ever met in my life. Melons and etiquette were her day job, and she was a grandmaster at both. Her product tasted good, but it could have tasted like cardboard and it still would have been worth the purchase just for the she says arigato gozaimasu.

Hey all, wanted to apologize for disappearing. It was a combination of trying to pull family members out of a doom spiral, and the busy season hitting my job. Things are settling down now though, so I'm eager to get back into the mix, if that's alright.

I’m assuming (1) the PK-ers know Grave is Lv.12, a.k.a. non-threatening, and (2) a Lv.45+ character with no unarmed combat skill is still able to use their fists, so being unarmed just makes them less dangerous than they are, but still at a huge advantage vs. Grace and Raquel in a two-on-two.
Grace wants to meet in the city, where it’s still No PvP. If they agree to a guard standing by, she will ask the guard if No PvP means they can’t harm each other.
If you want to narrate this happening, and skip to the meeting—if @Dmbrainiac, Serena and Boaty all agree to a peaceful private meeting, that’s fine too. I mostly (in the OoC post) am trying to establish Grace is taking some measure of precaution, but I don’t feel the need to RP every step of that since it’s probably overkill.

Honestly, I learned a lot from your GM posts. If you’ve read any Hero•Girl•Sprite (⚠️warning: weirdness, Nintendo-ripoffery), I’ve been using little boxes for the NPCs.
It’s a lot easier (to me anyway) than having a bunch of NPC headings, and as an added bonus, the image is bigger.
