It is quiet and tense inside the Blackbird. You all are returning from an ambassadorial meeting in Washington DC. Anti-mutant sentiment has been running high lately and spineless politicians are bowing to the political winds. The meeting did not go well. You heard all of the usual arguments about why mutants are too dangerous to be left "unaccountable" and that with great power comes great restrictions. New legislation is on the brink of making mutants second-class citizens.

Cyclops, which of your team member embarrassed you during the meetings? What did you do about it?

Wolverine, you lost your temper. What happened?

Nightcrawler, one of the politicians used an argument from your religion. How did you respond?

Jubilee, one of the politicians rudely dismissed your opinions for being either young, weak, or a woman (perhaps all three). How did you react?

Gambit, your prior criminal record was used to subtly threaten you. What was the outcome?

Some poor schmuck was going to have to gather up the desk Logan had left in several pieces, cart it out to the dumpster and go through the bother of bringing a new one in tomorrow morning.

"Couldn’t help myself! They’re out of their blasted minds if they think it ends with a desk getting split in half!" he grunts, knowing the others will have been tip toeing around him all night if he didn’t speak up now.

"I’ll cut the whole place in half if they push me far enough!" he says, his anger bubbling over again, but knowing he should probably be trying to make amends with the others for his outburst!

Jubilee crosses her arms and pouts, before groaning and scratching her head in frustration. Her personal flub was standing up to that one senator and declaring that at least she was out there helping people. Unfortunately, the senator took that and ran with it, using the opportunity to both humble brag about the widely popular bills he had helped pass as well as deride her for using her powers unchecked as a vigilante (as hypocritical as that might be for his initial dismissal of her capabilities).

"Agh, I'm so annoyed! How'd that old fart turn things around on me like that!?"

"We must turn the other cheek Logan," Nightcrawler tried to talk Wolverine down from his frenzy, although the same words were used to ironic effect earlier in Senator Heinlein's reply to Senator Kelly's call against the mutants. Heinlein had attempted to convince the assembly that the mutants would calmly accede to the demands made of them and accept whatever legislation would be passed. Sympathetic to be sure, but too quick make all the concessions that would reduce whatever few rights still remained. Both positions were untenable. "Starting a fight in the general assembly is the surest way to turn human sentiment against us and use up whatever goodwill we still have left. Already we left Jean behind, to have her at the meeting would've been too threatening for them."

Gambit looks at Jubilee sympathetically. "Hey petite, dey be de real criminals here, stealin’ de people’s money to pay for only what dey want."

He then frowns as he recalls Senator Kelly shouting about who knows what criminals could be hiding among these "unregistered mutants using their powers to hide their sordid history." The politician then looked at him as he mentioned how the program would help identify and punish those harboring criminal fugitives. He couldn’t help but think of Rogue and the other X-Men as he charged up one of his playing cards in his pocket.

After Wolverine decided to cut up a desk, he was one of those who helped guide him out of the room. He couldn’t help dropping a charged card in the trash can by the door as they left. He was distracted by Senator Kelly’s threats and forgot how much he had charged the card up as it exploded seconds after they exited, ensuring no one would be following them through the fire that started as sparks fell on a nearby senator’s desk.

As he sits at the controls of the sleek Blackbird, flying the team home to Salem Center, NY, he considers the day. He didn't expect much progress on mutant relations going into the meeting, but Wolverine's outburst coupled with Jubilee's quips to a senator didn't help things. Gambit's explosion of the trash can which resulted in several congressmen becoming drenched when the sprinklers came on was the worst. All of it was caught on cameras and broadcast to the world.

Scott donated significantly to the favorite charities of Senators Harris, Cortez, and Cruz. It was an expensive olive branch and probably didn't mend fences, but it was better than Remy's exit, he told himself.

"Team, I know we didn't meet the senators on common ground and they were only looking to score points for their bases," Scott says in a calm, but firm tone. "But your childish antics only served as red meat for anti-mutant hate groups like the Friends of Humanity. In the future, if the cameras are on, you need to maintain decorum. Even if we were never going to win that fight, there's no reason to make them seem... right to be afraid of us." He glances back at Nightcrawler, silently hoping the German will offer some support.

Wolverine was tempted to say that they ought to be afraid of him. If they wanted to something to be scared of, he was more than happy to play the boogeyman!

"Red meat." he snorts derisively. "That’s what they want to make out of us! Jackasses want to turn us into mutant burger meat!"

He lets his claws loose an inch, and wishes he could challenge some of the representatives to a fight that Wolverine could win.

"Minced Mutant, coming right up!" he barks bitterly, as if he was a line-cook in some anti-Mutant establishment.

Gambit grins at Jubilee, "Dat always sounds good to me!"

He then turns to Cyclops. "Maybe Gambit helped cool off de senators from dere crazy ideas with dose sprinklers, no?"

When Cyclops doesn't reply and stonily continues flying the plane, Gambit takes out his deck of playing cards and shuffles them. He starts to shuffle them in more and more complicated ways as the tension seems to grow in the Blackbird.

A screen in the cockpit flickers on and you all see the face of Jean Grey. "I hope I'm not interrupting. I've been watching the news reports on the hearings. I suppose things could have gone worse. How are you all feeling?"

"Aside from that, we’re all doing just peachy!" he says, sickly sweet. He knew she wasn’t calling them up to talk about their feelings.

The appearance of Jean helps Scott relax and he barely hides a smile as he replies, "It's good to see you, Jean." He ignores Wolverine's answer, even though it does make him think about peaches for a moment. "We knew they wouldn't work with us, but we couldn't allow them to move without speaking out for our people. I just wish we had more friends in government." He can't help but check on her and the X-Men they left behind at the mansion, "Is everything alright with you?"

Jean smiles are the responses from her teammates, expecting their exact responses. "Sadly nothing so beneficial as everlasting gum. I'm all right. But--and here is where you're expecting the bad news--I have gotten a notification from Cerebro. It seems the Professor had a program running that was tracking some tagged mutants. I haven't had time to look into exactly how or why, but several mutants have gone missing the past several days, including one just today that triggered the notification. The last known location was a few dozen miles north of your current location. The signal was moving fast before it was terminated. I believe they might be in a plane. Can you check on this for me, Scott?"

"Yeah, Scott. Can you check that out for us?" he says, with something of a sting. "Promise we won’t get in your way this time around." he says, sweet as he can manage, though entirely fake and obviously so!

Scott turns his head just slightly toward Wolverine but ignores his saccharine words. "Send us the coordinates, Jean. The team will check it out." He raises his voice to address everyone, "Team, some people need our help." So saying, he flips a few switches and guides the jet towards the coordinates Jean provides.

It is only several minutes before a small cargo plane, a C-23 Sherpa, can be seen over the Atlantic seaboard heading east out over the ocean. The plane has been painted dark grey and black.

Scott puts his hand over his headset mic and looks back at Nightcrawler, "Kurt, I want you and Logan to be ready to bamf over there." He flips the toggle to re-engage the comm system, "This is Cyclops... of the X-Men. We know that one of our people is on board your plane. Identify your covert vehicle's mission or we will take action to secure them. Jean Grey is with us and she can and will bring you down, if needed."

"Ready to go. But we're risking an incident here. It will be construed as aggressive action on the plane, we have no proof that a mutant is on board, apart from a triggered notification from Cerebro's tracking." Nightcrawler advised circumspection even as he turned to Wolverine to get ready.

"I can't see inside to teleport, so we'll have to land on the surface of the plane first so that you can open a hole to get in."

Scott's entire focus shifts to piloting the Blackbird. He holds the stick and adjusts the throttle to slip past the enemy plane, then he adjusts position until they are underneath the airspace of the plane. With practiced skill, Scott yanks on the controls and the jet whips nose up. For a brief moment, the cabin feels devoid of gravity and the world spins. Then everything becomes a twisting churn as Scott completes the turn and twist to send the jet hurting right at the gray plane.

"Go Kurt!" Scott orders loudly, hoping he can pull off the maneuver.

The moment Scott leveled their own jet close enough to the other plane, Nightcrawler flipped himself on top of Wolverine's shoulders and bridged the distance, materalising both of them into their cockpit! "Quick, before they alert the others!"

There's a puff of purple smoke and a whiff of brimstone. When it clears, Nightcrawler and Wolverine find themselves in a cramped cockpit. Thanks for Logan's short statue, he doesn't have to duck to avoid hitting his head, but Nightcrawler is hunched over. There's a woman with a flight helmet and mirrored shades in the pilot seat, the co-pilot seat is empty. There is less than two feet of space around you between the pilot seats and the walls. The cabin door is behind you in arms' reach. The pilot looks around and sees you standing there.

"What the-!" She speaks into her flight helmet microphone. "Security breach! Two mutants in the cockpit!"

Seeing Nightcrawler and Wolverine BAMF into the cockpit, Cyclops whips the Blackbird into a barrel roll to avoid slamming into the plane, narrowly avoiding a collision, then banking around to follow. "Heads up, Gambit and Jubilee. Stay alert. We need to be ready to assist."

"Hold the line Wolvie, I'm going to get the others!" Kurt ducked away from the pilot, letting Wolverine handle her, but quickly popped the door of the cockpit open that led to the main cabin in order to catch a glimpse of its interior, for that would make teleporting so much easier than trying to get everyone into the tiny cockpit. BAMF!

OOC:

Using Teleport to return to the Blackbird in order to bring someone else over! No cost. No action required either to open that door if I'm not wrong. Lemme know who's next, and also turn order! Presumably Wolverine needs to act for one round or something before Nightcrawler pops back over with another teammate.

Everyone roll initiative. Round 1 will start with Wolverine in the plane and Nightcrawler teleporting away. Nightcrawler and whoever he brings next will be round 2, but unable to act until round 3.

With the cockpit door open, Wolverine can see a large cargo bay beyond. A figure is strapped down to a pallet on the floor in the center, and almost a dozen people sit in chairs bolted to the sides of the aircraft. They unharness themselves and grab weapons.

One of the members, dressed in a hood and armor, pulls out a gun and points it directly to the figure handcuffed to the pallet on the floor. "Now, now, I believe you are the one who boarded uninvited. This is the way with you mutants, isn't it? Just because you are special you think the rules don't apply to you? That if people don't answer you polite request you can just force them to do it against their will? You make me sick! Now, you have ten seconds to get off my place or there will be one less mutant in the world."

"And how nice did you ask them before you strapped them into that thing?" he growls, stepping back and almost onto the front console of the plane.

He’s ready to drive his claws down into it, or the pilots, whichever would bring the bird down quicker.

"Make it two less mutants and a whole lot of you." he threatens, making it obvious what he plans to do.

The man snorts behind his mask. "And how nice do you mutants ask when your powers kill innocent bystanders? Or level a whole office building? We can go back and forth until the dawn of your kind. I will not repeat my command." He clicks the safety off the gun.

Just then, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and Gambit bamf back onto the plane. The man shouts, "You multiply like vermin!" He pulls the trigger, shooting the restrained woman in the leg with a purple beam weapon. You hear a muffled scream and realize she's gagged. "Next time will be fatal!"

"Doubt it." Logan snarls, but thinks better of bringing the jet down with a swipe of his claws across the console.

Instead, he springboards off of the console and uses the momentum to head straight down the craft, and directly at the man he had traded barbs with.

Still combat, just attacking an item instead of a person. Also you have your non-combat bonuses and your ability defenses swapped. No way to get a +16 on a roll lol. Non-combat should be +7, agility defense is 16. But you still succeed and get a fantastic success.

Gambit fans a series of 4 cards, and each one flies to a manacled limb, with just enough energy to explode them without harming the victim. This technique does surprise the guard who jumps back with a yelp and loses the grip on his gun.

The enemies are caught unaware and all are temporarily blinded by the flash of her fireworks. The leader ducks down as the grunts open fire blindly in a volley purple stunning laser blasts. Being blinded, the blasts don't hit a single X-Man (or X-Woman).

With Gambit slicing the shackles that held the prisoner, and Kurt himself managing to dodge his way to them, he did the most natural thing he always did, and grabbed the captive to teleport them back to the Blackbird.

Hearing the tell-tale sound of Nightcrawler teleporting, Logan chuckles a menacing chuckle. He looks about at all of the blinded and disoriented lackies, and swirls his claws all about himself.

Aiming to slice their weapons, if we are keen on not killing these guys! Make those weapons useless… maybe!

Not add a 6, the M is just treated as a 6, so you add +5 to the total. However you don't need to worry about it because Gambit just cleared almost the whole plane except the pilot lol.

Gambits has a card for each member of the Friends of Humanity and each gets knocked unconscious by the kinetic blasts! Their bodies slump to the floor and their guns clatter next to them. The pilot grabs the radio. "Base, this is Cougar Bravo, mission has been compromised! Mutants have boarded the plane and stolen the subject!"

As the last gun clatters onto the floor, Gambit turns to the front when he hears Jubilee shout at the pilot. He hears the snap and feels the plane make almost a 90 degree turn to the ground before he can make another quip. He sees the crate about to run into Wolverine and tries to intervene while also keeping upright himself.

Change of Plans only works when an ally has trouble on a roll so it doesn't apply here. But good thinking!

Wolverine gets clipped by the shifting pallet and his feet get knocked out from under him. The rest manage to stay on their feet. Jubilee grabs the broken yoke and realizes that the bolts holding the yoke in place have snapped and it is unfixable in the few minutes remaining before the airplane crashes to the ground!

The plane will crash in 3 minutes. That's more than enough time to teleport everyone off if Nightcralwer wants to do that.

Searching around the cargo hold, Gambit finds a parachute under each seat that is bolted to the wall. Nightcrawler looks around and counts twelve Friends of Humanity members. That's not good.

The pilot looks at Jubilee but refuses to answer.

It'll take exactly 60 Focus to get all the FoH members off, but will leave all of you stuck on the plane to find another way out. Or you could just strap parachutes to them and hope they wake up and jump out before the plane goes down. Or any other creative solution you all can think up!

I had looked at Teleport Object. Nightcrawler being rank 4 can teleport an object up to 4 sizes bigger than them, which on the Objects and Sizes table works out to be a cruise ship! (Or an airliner if you read the '4 sizes' rule more conservatively.) So RAW Nightcrawler can teleport the entire plane for just 10 Focus, 400 spaces or 2000 feet each time, though that somehow feels wrong.

Maybe each of the X-Men minus Nightcrawler and Cyclops could escape with a parachute and an unconscious soldier to reduce how many people have to be teleported to the Blackbird? The pilot can also parachute his way out. Cyclops can shoot down the unoccupied plane so it doesn't hurt anyone and then fly back to get us. Whatever we do, we should probably tie up the unconscious guys so they don't mutiny on the Blackbird before they're taken over.

"Remind me not to take the elevator with any of you!" Kurt began to bamf the unconscious goons over, leaving Cyclops to tie them up. He did it as quickly as he could, in case the plane began to fail again, leaving a stronger and stronger whiff of brimstone in the compressed air.

"That's it from me!" Kurt slumped back into one of the jet's seats, too exhausted to do anything else.

Gambit gets up to stretch and puts his bo staff away. He puts both his hands on the controls, concentrating on powering up the control panel enough to explode and force the plane to dive into the water. As Nightcrawler teleports the soldiers and X-Men back, he finishes up by delaying the explosion for a few seconds after they return to the Blackbird. He rushes over to Wolverine and Nightcrawler and gives them a grin and a nod.

I never expected to be attacked with other people around, but they were all in on it. One minute I was looking over some notes on the bus bench, the next I was on the ground and they clamped a collar on me and zip-tied my hands. When I could think straight I realized they had a stun gun. Assholes just stunned me and went to work. A van pulled up a few moments later and they threw me in the back. I learned later overhearing them that they had been waiting for me. They are collecting low-level or newly awoken mutants one at a time and shipping them off to some island for 'testing.' I think they called it 'Saint Clairveux' or 'Claireux' or something like that."

Scott feels Logan's gaze as he considers their options. The team in the Blackbird now are primed and ready to take on this threat. But they have non-combatants on board as well. "Team, I'm itching to take down this base on Saint Clairvaux Island. But, we need to get Hannah somewhere safe and drop off these Friends of Humanity goons first." He starts flying toward Salem Center, with plans to drop off their prisoners in New York somewhere. Perhaps the Fantastic Four would help out? Some time in the Negative Zone for them would be great. Hannah could stay at the mansion. This also gives him a chance to bring Jean along - they may need a heavy hitter.

Now that everyone was safely on board and the plane was bustling with the team going about doing what needed to be done, Nightcrawler fished out an energy drink Jubilee had stashed away somewhere, slurped it down, and promptly strapped himself in to get a few blinks, to recuperate for whatever they needed to do next after they drop off their FOH friends.

Hannah nods but doesn't seem very convinced. "Maybe. But for now they don't know they failed to get me until the plane fails to arrive. They also won't get the drop on me next time, I will be more aware. I was careless before because I didn't think I was anything special. Not a threat anyway. That won't happen again. I don't want this to derail my studies. That would be conceding a small defeat to them." She brushes her long hair back from her face. "But you shouldn't waste too much time with us. If they notice the plane hasn't returned on time, they will be on alert and it could be harder for you. Best to get there when they aren't expecting it. The element of surprise and all that."

She pauses and looks at Logan. "I've heard about you. All of you, y'know. But it's different seeing you up close. Your skeleton I mean," she blushes. "Must be nice, not having to worry about broken bones. I broke my arm playing softball in high school. It was the worst."

"That doesn’t stop them from trying to break em. Isn’t that right?" he says menacingly, to the pilot of the other ship.

He appreciates the go get em attitude of the mutant, and her desire to stick it to the man. The same couldn’t be said for their captain.

He looks to Cyclops and the others:

"She’s got a point. Sure, we can hit em twice as hard if we have back up, but they’ll be dug in twice as bad, too!"

The team takes flight to the Ivory Coast which takes about 9 hours. Once they see the African coastline in the distance, a small island comes into view. A voice comes over the radio. "Unidentified aircraft, please identify yourself."

It is almost eleven at night. Jubilee can see the island is not very big, occupied by a single large runway, a control tower, several squat white buildings, a large cylindrical fuel tank, and everywhere is dotted with utility lights which cast bright pools of light.

Over the radio comes the response. "Roger, emergency noted. The runway is clear. We have a small fuel depot at the far end. We can spare enough fuel to get you to the mainland airport. Please stay on board."

There are two larger hangar-sized buildings, probably used to store airplanes, supplies, and equipment. The other half dozen smaller buildings are likely barracks, offices, and other necessary buildings to do...whatever it is people do here.

As you are discussing this, you see a woman approach the Blackbird carrying a fuel hose from the fuel tank nearby. She looks around at the plan, then seems to radio someone. A few moments later, the voice you were talking to before comes over the radio. "Uh, yeah, sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but we are unfamiliar with your plane and can't find the fuel port. Can you let us know where it is?" The Blackbird runs on technology far more advanced than fossil fuels and lacks a fuel port...

A few moments after Nightcrawler finishes teleporting everyone out of the Blackbird, the sound of whirring rotors and chopping wind can be heard from behind the largest building. A pair of helicopters soon rise into view over the buildings.

Nightcrawler surmised that the largest of the buildings would be the hangar, and not necessarily where they would find out more about what this facility did. He aimed them towards the space in between the two smaller buildings; they would have to dash into one of them quickly to leave the whirly-birds second guessing.

The team ducks into the building and their hunches are proved right. The building houses four cells each along the southern wall and takes up most of the interior space. Inside each cell is around a dozen mutants, each with an inhibitor collar on. The walls of this building are lined with metal and anyone with knowledge in science understands this building is one large Faraday cage. Further, it seems to block telepathic abilities as well.

While the group's hunch was right, prisoners means guards, or at least one guard since the people here didn't expect a rescue attempt. He whirls around at the sound of the door opening. "Hey! You aren't supposed to be here!" He reaches for a whistle around his neck...

With incredible teamwork, Nightcrawler sweeps the guard's legs out from under him and he crashes to the ground. In a flash Gambit is on top of him with a hand over his mouth and kicks away his gun out of reach. The man tries to shout but it is muffled and indistinct.

Several of the captives are awake and begin cheering quietly. Some begin talking at once.
"Yeah, you get that sucka!"
"These guys deserve a kick to the head!"
"I can't believe you're here!"
"Are you hear to rescue us?"

Jubilee doesn't find any keys on the guard. However there is a single pushbutton on the wall in the middle of the wall opposite the cells. Looking at the cell doors shows they lack any keyhole. Your best guess is the cells are electromagnetically locked and can be opened with the push of a button.

Surprisingly, their is a small buzzing sound and a loud cthunk as the magnetic lock is deactivated from the metal cage doors. They swing open easily. The captives slowly start moving forward, amazed to be freed. Looking over them, you don't see anyone you recognize. It seems the FoH were collecting relatively new or low powered mutants who haven't made a name for themselves yet. One woman steps forward among the rest. She has dark straight hair and deep tanned skin and looks to have indigenous blood in her. "Thank you. We didn't hear any fighting outside... Did you take them all out? Are we free to go?"

He recalled Logan blurting out some of his Weapon X ordeals before, and it was important to know that this facility was simply a prison and not also a mutant test lab.

The woman introduces herself as Nayla. "Not taken away, but we were 'processed' before being thrown in here. The place is run by Dr. Strain. He has created technology that steals mutant powers and lets anyone wearing them use those powers. They're a kind of cybernetic glove. They took all of our powers and then put these collars on us just in case. He is making these gloves for all of his goons, but only the highest ranking ones have them now until he can manufacture more. They have a wide range of powers now and can steal yours just by touching you. Please be careful."

Scott exhales slowly. "This is bad," he thinks to himself. He pushes a confident look onto his face and addresses the de-powered mutants, "Alright, we're going to go and retrieve these gauntlets. We need all of you to stay here right now, but when things start exploding... make your way to the Blackbird - that's our jet parked outside. I'll open up the gangway remotely. Don't worry, we'll be grabbing all of the guards' attention if that happens. For right now, sit tight. Help each other. We will be back soon."

He looks to Wolverine and since his game face is on, he uses his mutant name, "Wolverine, can you find where this Dr Strain is? Any ideas?" He looks around at the rest of the team for ideas.

Wolverine slinks into the building just as the mutants are being freed from their cages! He had been keeping an eye on the outside, in case the game was up and the place got surrounded.

He sniffs the air when Cyclops asks him about finding Strain.

"Oh, I’ll find him alright! Give him a taste of his own medicine!" he says, menacingly. "We should handle those birds out there first! We’ll be sitting ducks otherwise!"

He then imagined himself being thrown at the two helicopters and slicing them both in half at once. Beast or Colossus would get the job done easily enough! They’d need to improvise with the current crew!

"Play nice or our new friends won't."

He jerks a thumb at the de-powered mutants and checks they can get the collars off before he follows the other's lead outside, readying some more playing cards for whatever comes next. He can't help but also think about Rogue and how similar Dr. Strain's technology was to her powers. Was he inspired by them?

While Jubilee launches her plasma burst "fireworks" at one helicopter, Nightcrawler teleports Wolverine up into the cramped cockpit. It's so crowded, Wolverine is sitting on the pilot's lap, while Nightcrawler sits on the copilot's. Even with Logan's short stature his head is almost brushing the ceiling, and both of your shoulders are dangerously close to pressing various buttons and toggles.

Gambit hears a cry of alarm go up and several FoH members running around. Gambit throws several charged cards and causes explosions, blowing away the members in various directions to land on the ground stunned.

Damage is based on the Marvel die of the attack roll, not rolled separately. You just barely hit so yeah, they're all dead lol.

Jubilee's fireworks short circuit the helicopter's controls as well as blind the pilot. He yells but it is impossible to hear him over the sound of the choppers. Wolverine meanwhile tears into the pilots and the chopper itself. It soon becomes apparent as they have a new problem: two helicopters spinning our of control! The rotor blades are likely to cut people to ribbons and the copters are looking to crash into some of the buildings below! Before the chaos had erupted, 3 guards in uniforms and weird contraptions on their hands have also started to surround the party!

Cyclops has a difficult choice to make and makes it quickly. He targets the tail rotor with his optical blast. It blasts to pieces, eliminating the spinning blades as a danger to the people below. However without the tail providing stabilization, the helicopter starts spinning rapidly around the main rotor as it descends into a crash landing below. There is a small explosion as chopper crashes into the rocky island just on the outskirts of the compound, taking out a portion of fence and the communication tower. The pilot is most certainly dead.

Kurt preferred less wanton destruction if he could help it. Sure he could just get himself and Logan out of there, but he didn't want the the helicopter he was on to suffer the same demise as the other one Cyclops had to shoot down. He grabbed the cyclic stick between the dead pilot's legs, the one he was sitting on, and deftly pulled to regain a measure of control over the craft.

Despite Logan's destruction of much of the cockpit, enough is functional for Kurt to land the helicopter as softly was possible given the current circumstances. And just in time too as a few sparks in the shredded control panel ignite and start a fire in the cockpit. The smell of burning metal and plastic begins to fill the tight quarters with noxious fumes.

Outside the few guards remaining are shouting angrily as their helicopters are taken down. The rush Gambit, Jubilee, and Cyclops, arms outstretched, cybernetic gloves at the ready. All three are successful in grabbing the X-men members, who are surprised how strong these metallic gloves really are. They are equally surprised as they feel their mutant powers drained away!

OOC:

Each character is grabbed and has had their Elemental Control powers stolen. To escape a grab you must spend your action to Escape, making a Melee check against the target's Melee Defense, which is a 14. If you succeed you can still take a move action. On a fail you remain grabbed. Jubilee takes 34 damage in addition because of the enemy's Fantastic Success.

Gambit, Jubilee, and Cyclops struggle to break out but having their power sapped has drained their bodies as well and they can't overcome the strength of these technological gauntlets. The gloves increase their strength, crushing the bodies of the unlucky heroes.

Nightcrawler teleports a large chunk of the plane over the heads of some grunts and lets it fall. Reacting quickly they both dive out of the way as it crashes down in a flaming heap.

That's a good plan! The only catch is the second reaction can only be used for a Martial Arts technique, so you can't use Teleport Together. You could Blink to the enemy and try something like Leg Sweep to knock him prone which would affect his attack. Jubilee's attack is a success but I'll wait to resolve it until we work out Nightcrawler's attack.

Everyone stares at the gauntlet but the technology seemed beyond any of their knowledge. Perhaps if they had Hank McCoy with them. But the larger question is who made this fantastic tech? And were they still on the island?

The giant bay doors have been welded shit and two smaller man-sized doors of steel have been installed. Nightcrawler held off bamfing into the unexplored building when he heard Logan call out a moment of caution. It made sense to let the one who was the best at what he did charge in first. The elf looked to see if he could spy through the open doorway, for if he could see a strategically advantageous point to materialise at, such as deeper into the room, or even better, nearer to whatever or whomever looked of importance, he could close the distance faster!

The door remains open as Wolverine barrels through the opening and into the large hangar. All is pitch black inside until some of Jubilee's fireworks provide brief but colorful illumination. Wolverine gets a quick flash of a giant engineering laboratory, all workbenches and machine parts and wires. There are a few people scurrying behind a row of workbenches before the light fades. With his heightened smell, Wolverine can tell there are a few humans in here, and also the overwhelming smell of oil and metal and ozone. Once everyone follows there is the sound of machines whirring and the rear door begins sliding shut!

Healing during a mission requires spending 1 Karma and then making a TN 10 Resilience check. On a success, heal an amount of Health equal to the roll * character rank. Illumination requires an object or point you can see, so you can't target anything inside the hangar yet. Also if you make your recovery roll an out of combat roll, then you'll have to wait for your turn in combat before using Illumination.

The door shuts with the sound of rattling metal. There is darkness for a moment when Jubilee launches some fireworks into the air to shed multicolored illumination. The brief lighting reveals a large hangar converted into a science workshop. Large spotlights click on, pinning the group under blinding lights. A voice from the shadows behind the powerful spotlights speaks.

"I always knew someone would come meddling sooner or later. You must understand I can't let you leave now. I must harvest your powers to even the playing field, you understand. It is hardly a mano a mano fight when mutants are involved, is it? You can surrender now and I promise I will not kill you. I just want to strip away your powers. I think this is a generous offer, don't you?"

Kurt didn't like having the lights on them all without being able to see who it was that was speaking with them. He figured the best course of action is to get away from the range of the spotlights, right at the back and as high as possible, in order for him to figure out what was his next move was.

Just a basic teleport move first, as far back and away from the light as possible to see what's going on, ie, to see if he can get behind the enemy or to perch on the rafters that the lights are mounted on, before executing his standard action.

With Jubilee's fireworks, you can see there are only five people in this room. Two of the injured FoH members, two members operating the double spotlights, and an elderly man in a lab coat and with two cybernetic gauntlets on his hands.

Dr. Ezra Strain

Cyclops rushes the one he recognizes as grabbing him previously and stealing his powers. The guard raises the gauntlet to defend or maybe counterattack, but Cyclops easily dodges and lands a mighty punch that hits the FoH member, crumpling him into an unconscious pile immediately.

Wolverine leaps to one of the enemies behind a spotlight. The member is caught off guard and Wolverine's claws rip into him.

Gambit rolls close to the enemy that stole his powers and unleashes a brutal swing of his staff. The man crumples to the floor.

OOC:

Both of the previously injured FoH vanguard members are now down, one FoH member is heavily injured. Nightcralwer still can still take his standard action before the enemies act.

"Two gloves? That makes you a zwei hander!" Nightcrawler quipped as he got his bearings; now he could see clearly who to go for, and he leapt towards Dr Strain to see if he could trip him up before his gloves came into play!

I'll use my standard action to move into close combat, and the additional reaction from Always Ready to Leg Sweep, leaving one reaction left to stand by. Also, is Dr Strain rank 4 or higher? If so I have other options, like Combat Trickery, which I could use here.

"Aaaghhh!" the doctor shouts as Nightcrawler dives in from the rafters and sweeps his legs out from under him. The wind is knocked out of him and there is an audible crack of bones. But his will to succeed pushes him on and from his place on the floor he aims both gauntlets in an arc at the X-Men. Crackling energy surrounds them and then leaps out in arcing electrical jolts!

Nightcrawler teleports out of the way while Cyclops instinctively dives for the floor. The others are not so lucky and receive a serious blast like a lightning strike. A burning pain followed by a tingling sensation like their whole body is numb for a moment before it fades away. The doctor uses this momentary reprieve to stand up. One arm looks dislocated from Nightcrawler's trip, but then pops back into place by itself!

The X-Men pass around the gloves, feeling the sharp needles inject their mysterious fluid and their powers return. With each injection, you see the mutant's profile pop up on the computer. A whole database of mutant genomes... A wealth of knowledge, but terrible in the wrong hands. Also the formula for whatever Dr. Strain developed is likely stored on the computers as well.

The X-Men have their work cut out for them. Destroy the information, or preserve it and hope it doesn't fall into the wrong hands? There are also several dozen mutants that needed their powers restored, but also evacuated from the island.

There's also the question of who was funding Dr. Strain's work, and if word will get out. Will their be reinforcements sent to the island? The clock could be ticking...

The hold of the Blackbird was spacious, but still Nightcrawler needed a substantial space along the entire side of one wall to bring over the computer core. There was no way to reconnect it on the plane, Beast would have to figure it out once it was brought back.

Ok maybe the computer isn't quite that big haha. It can be carried by one person.

It is a tight fit getting the computer and all of the freed mutants onto the Blackbird. Cyclops is worried the jet might have trouble taking off being so loaded down, and indeed it is rought going gaining momentum and ascending to flight altitude. But eventually the jet climbs up and is on its way back across the Atlantic and towards home.

Dr. Strain (now Dr. ReStrained) is bound and stored in the single holding cell. The other FoH members were corralled into the jail cells and left enough food and water to survive several days. An S.O.S. call was made the Ivory Coast mainland so with any luck rescue will come before they starve.

"Alright, people! There should be room enough for you at the academy until you get back on your feet! It’s safe there, and we can arrange to get you all home and where you need to be… tomorrow!" Wolverine says, figuring that everyone had had enough excitement for one day, and a rest was well-deserved in some cases, and well-needed in others!

As the freed mutants settle in, Gambit looks at the tied up Dr. Strain and shakes his head.

"Where'd you get de idea to take mutant powers anyway? How do you know it wouldn't mutate you too?"

Dr. Strain smirks. "Who hasn't had the wish to take a mutant's powers for themselves? Everyone wants to be special. As for how, I'm not going to just blab my plan to you like a Bond villain. That's my secret."

Cyclops places a call to Jean and filles her in on what happened on the island and that they'll be bringing home quite a few people temporarily. Jean says she'll get as many extra beds prepared as possible and inform Hank to get his computer set up for analysis.

It takes half a day to make the return trip from the coast of Africa back to the eastern US. It is well into the evening when you return to the X-mansion. Jean and Beast are waiting outside next to the landing field.

"I brought souvenirs for you guys! Uh, besides the power gloves. And the new friends and enemies."

"Oh, and what would those be?" Jean asks with a smile.

The rescued mutants disembark in a jumbled line, looking around with awe. Many have heard of the X-mansion, or seen clips on TV, but seeing it in person was different. As is getting to meet the famous Jean Grey and Beast. Several other members of the X-men, teachers and students alike, come out to greet the newcomers and lead them off to their temporary housing.

"Fascinating," Beast says, adjusting his glasses while looking at the gloves. "Let's get everything to my lab. If you're hungry there's some leftover dinner but I feel we may have to place a large order for all of our new friends," he laughs, fangs flashing in the school's exterior lighting. "I can get to work first thing tomorrow morning."

"There had better be!" Wolverine growls about dinner, though the sound is good natured and funny!

"Appreciate it! Let me know if you need something taken apart! I got pretty handy at it back on the base!" he boasts, before heading for the kitchen. He even ushers a few of the newcomers inside as he goes!

Cyclops does his best to make the new mutants feel welcome, introducing them to Jean and Beast and any others who come out to greet them. "Jubilee, why don't you order pizza for everyone? Put it on our tab." After making sure everyone has something to eat, Cyclops hugs Jean and they follow Beast to his lab.

Jubilee lets go of Jean and Hank, whipping out her flip phone and dialing the best pizza place in the area.

"Oh, pizza! Hang on, I'll show you guys your souvenirs after I order one of everything on the menu!"

The PC mainframe and the cybernetic gloves are stored in the lab. Beast's stomach growls and he smiles sheepishly. "Now that's finished let's eat. We can start the analysis first thing tomorrow."

The pizza arrives, along with two dozen 2-liter bottles of various sodas. There is not enough room even in the small cafeteria so paper plates and cups and blankets are set up on the rear lawn behind the X-mansion in an impromptu and late night picnic.

It's a half hour into the meal when Beast returns from the mansion after a long absence in the bathroom. He looks groggy and dizzy. "I'm sorry I wasn't there to greet you on your return. I must have been very tired after lunch and slept most of the day. Was your mission a success?"

MEANWHILE

Beast shuts the rear door of a box truck that contains Dr. Strain's computer hardware. He climbs into the driver's seat. His form shifts and changes, revealing a blue-skinned woman with red hair. She starts the truck with a smile and drives off into the night.
