Chapter 3: Level 2 dungeon

[ +- ] MAP
A bronze plaque is fixed to the east wall of the balcony on level 2, engraved with text (copied here)
[ +- ] plaque
Further you find following keeping at safe distance from everything
[ +- ] North: Devil face
[ +- ] East - curve in corridor
[ +- ] Tomb
[ +- ] Doors
OOC:
Where does each of you want to go and what do you want to interact with?
Jul 12, 2024 8:21 am
Vatoris moves East interested with the strange curve in corridor informing everyone:
I feel an aura of transmutation within this cylinder, but can't locate any object to give that aura. It is also strange that the corpse does not slides down the curve, something is holding that corpse.
[ +- ] MAP
OOC:
Not sure if it is clear, so let me try explain - the corridor on map that is pictured horizontally (east-west) is a simple corridor 8 feet high. But the vertical one is not a corridor, it's perfect cylinder with it's bottom intersecting with the corridor. So the height at intersection is 55 feet and if you want to go north or east you would be climbing upwards the curve. Is it clear now? DO I need to try to make a 3D picture somehow?

I will fly into the circular corridor to have a closer look at the corpse. Being careful to not touch anything. As I go up the corridor do I feel anything physically different, like changes in the pull of gravity?
Jul 12, 2024 1:48 pm
Throgin goes closer and follows Vatoris.

Why would he go that way...or what brought him there?
Jul 12, 2024 2:40 pm
Tinkara feel nothing physically different as she flies through the circular corridor and takes a better look at the body. She may not immediately have the answer to Throgin's question, but it is visually obvious the creature was killed by wounds from axes and crossbow bolts.
Vatoris takes few steps back to let Throgin have a better view
OOC:
@valdattaMadun roll a perception, @thorsman99 roll a perception check with advantage as you look at the body from close distance you may notice something Vatoris missed
Just for flavor before Zean comes and notice the strange this with no rolls - due to his passive perception

All looks natural to Throgin but Tinkara feel a bit dizzy, as she analyze her feelings she realize what's the problem: the way dress drops, the way long ago clotted blood drained... that all suggest that the gravity is just below the corpse and the whole world is turned by some 20%.

Jul 14, 2024 2:55 pm
"I'm fine, I'm just a little disoriented because gravity seems a little different here. Hold on while I go further around and confirm my suspicions."

I proceed to fly further along the ring, looking ahead to see if anything else is up here, and taking note of the shifting of gravity if it continues. If I don't run into anything threatening, I'll continue around the ring until I'm back in the hallway.
Jul 15, 2024 6:42 pm
As Tinkara fly up the corridor she disappears from the view of other who have not yet stepped into the circular corridor.

"That was weird. It feels like a circle, but when I went all the way around, you all and the corpse were not here. Then when I came back the other way, here you all are again. Feels like something dimensional or maybe time related shifts somewhere around the midway point.
Jul 17, 2024 5:50 am
"Twisting time? Can we use this to our advantage? Go to the point when the corpse disappears and wait there to see what happens? What happened?"

Ixion chuckled.

"I wonder if we killed him..."

Did it seem dangerous to walk that direction? I wonder if getting that magic item would be easy?
Jul 18, 2024 5:21 pm
OOC:
didnt someone have mage hand? Maybe we could get the scepterfrom a distance
Jul 18, 2024 5:27 pm
OOC:
scepter!? what scepter? Can't remember mentioning one, even forum reach feature doesn't find any, could you please link me to the post you mean?
Vatoris cast a mage hand and retrieve the staff with the bronze goat's head.
Who want this? Could I put it into my collection of things? he asks
Jul 18, 2024 5:30 pm
"The plaque said 'the ring is a path to another tomb', so I imagine that we go up and around to access another tomb. I'll go and do a search of the corpse and bring back whatever looks useful, just in case."

I fly back up and search the corpse.

"If the staff is small enough for me to use as a physical weapon, i would love to have it."
Jul 18, 2024 5:52 pm
Tinkara discover that ink-stained robes contain a journal. Further search of body also turns up an ink pot that never runs dry (100 gp) and a spellbook
OOC:
Since no PC is a wizard spells in that book will be irrelevant at the moment. Adding all to DM's charsheet
Stuff is a technically a Quarterstaff and it has no heavy property, so small sized creature have no problems using it
Jul 18, 2024 6:12 pm
OOC:
wrote scepter instead of staff...I dunno why my brain thought that. wasn't there an ornate thing on it like a head? (haven't gone back to check yet) maybe my mental image was just wrong
Jul 18, 2024 6:52 pm
OOC:
Don't you mix it up with the mace from last tomb? Anyhow - if this helps I dig up some possible visuals - let's they this stuff is actually a
[ +- ] a walking stick
It is wooden stuff with a bronze goat's head.
Jul 18, 2024 9:36 pm
I bring back the journal, ink pot and spellbook. I hand them to Vatoris.

"If nobody else wants it, I'll take the staff, just in case I get into a situation where I need a melee weapon. We should probably look at the journal and see if there's any useful information in it."
Jul 18, 2024 9:58 pm
"Nice finds. Maybe the staff will be useful for more than just thwacking."
[ +- ] How I see the staff...
Jul 19, 2024 7:54 am
Tinkara opens journal and see it is written in common. The last page of the journal reveals the fate of an adventurer party - please read more here
OOC:
You will need to spend more time (i.e. a short rest) to read through rest of the journal, but only the last page is written inside tomb of 9 gods, so other pages will only give you information on party members and motives, but not on the tomb itself

You can also add a magical quarterstaff until you either spend short rest attuning to it or ask Vatoris to identify you will not know it's properties
Jul 19, 2024 12:30 pm
"Vatoris, if you feel comfortable using your magic to reveal the properties of this staff, I would welcome it. Otherwise I will wait until I have an opportunity to sit with it."
Jul 19, 2024 12:46 pm
Yes, no problem it will require 20 minutes instead of an hour - not a huge, but still a gain.

He identify stuff as following
[ +- ] Stuff of striking
Well, that's interesting. We just wasted 20 minutes - you will spend that hour to to attune to it to be able to gain the magical benefits.
OOC:
Let me know if you want to spend another hour for SR right now. If at least two players post they want - you will have it
Jul 19, 2024 1:28 pm
"Well, that's lovely, and just what I need! I don't need to bond with it right away though, unless others have need for a short rest. I'm happy just to have something in my hands in case I find myself in a situation I'd rather not be in."

Jul 22, 2024 1:12 pm
OOC:
Hi! Im slowly getting back on GP:) Very interesting thing with this circular corridor!
Short rest won't do for me... I need more time to recollect my thoughts and recharge. So let's go for now.
Jul 22, 2024 2:59 pm
"The plaque leads me to believe there is another tomb to be found if we go around the ring. Shall we investigate it now, or later?"
Jul 23, 2024 1:24 pm
"I think now. No point in wasting our legs to get back here later." - with those words Zean starts to walk around the circular corridor, but in different direction than dead body is. Looking forward if something heavy maybe want to crush him too?
OOC:
As I think we could go both ways?
Jul 23, 2024 2:21 pm
I will go with Zean, flying ahead of him by about 10 feet, so I can see what we're walking into.
Jul 23, 2024 5:49 pm
Throgin will follow behind Tink
Jul 24, 2024 7:18 am
A magical gravity keeps Lotus and Throgin bound to the floor as they walk along they walk around the circular corridor. The moment Lotus Zean reach the halfway point of the circular corridor (and is upside down), he disappears from your view.
Lotus Zean see no dead body any more the same moment and turning around he don't see or hear the rest of the party. Vatoris join you and share deep arcnana knowledge explaining that the most probably explanation is an invisible planar gate, stepping through we appear in other plane of existence. Probably a pocket dimension.
Since Time conduit was an incredibly rare, powerful chronomancy spell that allowed the creation of a very short-lived portal backwards through time. he don't believe you are experiencing one left alone here in the dungeon.
Jul 24, 2024 8:33 am
OOC:
By Lotus you mean Zean or Tinks?
Jul 24, 2024 8:47 am
OOC:
upss. I mean Zean who was leading. Fixed above.
Jul 24, 2024 9:11 am
Zean nods his head on Vatoris explanation apparently agreeing with it.
"So let's do some sight seeing in this pocket dimension as you called it."

Zean makes 2 more steps... and then turns around to wait for Thorgin and Tinks (and Ixion?) to pass the supposed portal. Seeing that he is backed by the rest of his friends he continues his walk - still being very cautious - until he will be positioned 'correctly' and looks around: what has changed? Do he see new chambers, rooms?
Jul 25, 2024 5:26 am
While up there (35 feet above entrance to this curved corridor you only see the corridor and the entrance ( for you at the moment it is right above your head). It looks exactly the same.
Jul 25, 2024 11:51 am
When you reach the entrance you can see exactly the same view around. The same you saw when start walking.
Vatoris is not so sure any more this is an another plane. Even if it is a mirror plane it may probably be upside down world... be careful. artificer has lost the last of his confidence.
OOC:
You stand in rhe two corridor intersection. Missing body is the only feature change. Otherwise it would feel like you simply walked the cyrve and returned back where started
Jul 25, 2024 2:09 pm
"Weh... Not new things?" - Zean sighted disappointed - "Strange. But let's get sure. S o m e t h i n g had to change." - with those words Zean started to walk - making small steps - towards what apparently looked like the same tomb then before. But with each step he used his maul handle as blind person would to check his way before them. Pocking on the ground, walls and before him.

If any of his companions would have asking eyes - seeing what he is doing - he would say witha note of indignation in his voice:
"WHAT!? If this bad guy can make portals to different planes, he can hid enormous chasm before us with some illusion or something like that. Don't he?"
Jul 25, 2024 2:29 pm
"It seems like anything is possible here. From what the plaque said, perhaps the tomb here is not the same as the tomb where there's a corpse in the ring."

I think Tink has the right idea... Throgin looks up the different passageways in the apparent loop.

We haven't looked at the tomb from the other side, if we check this one and don't find anything we might need to investigate the other side first to figure out what we are looking for
Jul 25, 2024 5:37 pm
I will leave the ring and fly into the tomb for a look around, being careful as usual not to touch anything.
Jul 26, 2024 5:51 am
OOC:
What does everyone else do as Tinkara fly into the tomb? And Zean walks in there crasing the air...
Tinkara observe the Tomb as described in the first post in this thread:

This room smells of wine. On a checkerboard marble floor, a gilded coffin sparkles in sunlight streaming down from the chamber's vaulted ceiling, which arches twelve feet overhead. Four huge stone gargoyle heads, their mouths agape, protrude from the walls.
Jul 26, 2024 9:16 am
Interesting. Can I determine if there's a source to the smell? Is this tomb in any way different from the one on the "other side" of the ring?
Jul 27, 2024 10:54 am
Tinkara is unable to see any difference with the tomb on the "other side". Neither can she find a source of the smell - looks like whole room is filled with the smell.

Just before entering the tomb Zean smashes his maul into the ceiling to realize it's a solid stone block (i.e. 5x5 feet taking whole width of the ceiling).
GreyWord sent a note to Pedrop
Vatoris follow you and informs about aura of abjuration around the coffin, while sunlight seems to be generated by an illusion magic.
Jul 27, 2024 11:56 am
I will examine the gargoyle heads more closely. Specifically looking at those "gaping mouths". Maneuvering my light around, can I see if there's a bottom? Anything in them?
Jul 27, 2024 2:33 pm
Throgin approaches with Zean. Snickering at his friends "carefulness "
Jul 27, 2024 2:52 pm
Mouths are big. As Tinkara is looking into the mouths it appears they could have swallowed her with sn ease if not just a stone sculptures. Still nothing worth mentioning in any of the mouths.
Jul 27, 2024 5:16 pm
Now looking at the coffin. How does it open?
Jul 27, 2024 5:16 pm
Now looking at the coffin. How does it open?
Jul 28, 2024 3:30 am
"At least we know it's real, Zean," Ixion said after the roof was suitably dented. "I know Vatoris said this most likely isn't the past but do any of you remember a maul-shaped hole in the ceiling in our world?"
Jul 28, 2024 7:53 am
OOC:
@annex could you help me understand what are you referring to with "a maul-shaped hole in the ceiling". I don't recognize narrating any hole.
If you refer to " Zean smashes his maul into the ceiling to realize it's a solid stone block " - that smashing made no visible damage to the huge stone block. If anything it would be the maul to break, not a solid stone.
[ +- ] Stone coffin
For simplicity let's say any stone coffin can be opened by two characters combined effort (no roll required). You would stone lid off the coffin unless it is locked in any way - but you would only learn about it once two PCs try to take the lid off
Jul 28, 2024 11:56 am
"Well. I don't think there's really anything to do but open it. We've found that the ring does indeed lead to another tomb. The plaque also said "the dead abhor sunlight", so I'd think that's a reference to the sunlight on the coffin here. The rest doesn't seem to apply to this area. I'm for opening up the coffin and seeing what happens. Anyone else have thoughts?"

Zean's face looked as if he was offended by reality - precisely, because his 'clever plan' of tapping everything around him had failed and lead to nothing.

"Yeah, Tinks... let's look inside. If the dead don't like the sun, probably it's better to stand within its reach." - Zean said while - resigned - attaching his Maul to his belt, walking towards one side of the coffin and holding it in his hand. Then looking meaningfully at Throgin:

"Would you help me with this brother?"
Jul 29, 2024 11:58 am
I will assume an airborne position in clear sight of the coffin, ready to blast anything that might emerge.

Jul 29, 2024 9:49 pm

Jul 30, 2024 2:18 am
OOC:
Ixion isn't getting separated from the others in a demiplane. He's with ya!
Jul 30, 2024 7:29 am
OOC:
I am and will be insisting every player either explain their PC positioning at any moment or at least provide actions sufficient for me to decide that positioning, because position may be extra important when encounter happens. And I don't want players to feel "my PC should have been in slightly different position.
Zean and Throgin removes the lid and you see nothing but a wooden plaque inside the coffin. In the sunlight created by the illusion you can read the text in common the the plaque "Drown your sorrows".

At the same moment you hear sound from the corridor outside room: when you look there you realize the stone block Zean smashed earlier is slowly descending
OOC:

Mechanically: A creature that wishes to enter or leave the tomb during this time can do so, moving up to its speed. If the creature ends its movement under the block, it must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw to get out from under the block...
And no you don't have time for any action (no dash, spell casting, etc.) just a "moving up to its speed".
I believe it means Zean can't make it. Tinkara could you make it with DC 15 Dex save, while Vatoris, Throgin and Ixion could manage to move out of the tomb before it is sealed. Everyone but Zean - please decide if you leave or if you stay in tomb.
@Pedrop since you have no choice, may I ask you please to decide if Vatoris stay or leaves?
[ +- ] MAP (and distance)
Jul 30, 2024 8:20 am
OOC:
Hehe.. should be more careful about the hints you provided:) I think it would be beneficial for Zean for Vatoris to stay... but I imagined him more as rouge/thief-like magician, so probably he will leave the chamber with comment like:
"ok... I think I will check if it could be opened from the outside... keep your calm!" :)
Zean seeing that he have no chance to get to the closing stone pillar sighs, and says:
"Humm.... so obvious trap. Should have figured it out. Ehh... am I getting old?" - then he stands looking relaxed and enjoys looking at his friends confusion between loyalty and natural instinct: whether to stay or leave.

"A lot can be read from body language and the faces. Even from such seasoned heroes" - he admitted in his thoughts.

After a moment - when his companions decided - he get a simple, but maybe not-so-stupid idea:
"Maybe I should try to move the lid back on the sarcophagus at its old place?" - and he does just that.
Jul 30, 2024 11:53 am
I look at the block and decide I'd rather take my chances in here than try to squeak under the block.

"I'm staying with you, Zean. I will try the same magic I used on the outer door."

I will help Zean with the lid, and then I will prepare to cast Reduce.

OOC:
Throgin don't see and don't even hear what is going on, but I'm posting in public. @valdattaMadun if you prefer to not see/know what is going on inside please let us know and we will do that way.
Wine start to pour from all four gargoyles' mouths and nostrils at an extreme rate.
OOC:
The wine floods the tomb at a rate of 1 foot per round, we will narrate one round at a time (just as during a combat). Ceilings are 12 feet high.
If Tinkara and Zean is closing the lid I would like to rule it takes both of your actions for how heavy the lid is. But you could still move this round after you close it. Wine will not impact your first 5 rounds. Anyone who want to understand source of wine need to get closer to the head, but no roll required.
What does everyone do first round?
Aug 1, 2024 4:47 pm
First round I will help Zean with the lid. Second round I have other ideas.

Last edited August 2, 2024 4:41 am

OOC:
Since @Pedrop posted his willingness to close lid in previous post I'll go with that for this round
Zean and Tinkara working together close the lid and it looks like it is right in the same position as before, but wine keep pouring nevertheless. Red wine will son reach your knees.

Ixion meanwhile figures out that behind the head, what were looking like a wall was actually a stone valve. Currently the valve behind the head is open revealing a crawlway behind. Wine pours through the crawlway. Closing the lid made no impact of the valve.
OOC:
In case you would like to crawl through crawlway it is 3 feet high and 2 feet wide and it would be possible for a PC to crawl (you would be both prone and squeezed, expect Tinkara who would only be squeezed) through it. But currently red wine stream make it both impossible to see through and hard to move through (moving will require DC 25 Athletics check)
[ +- ] MAP
Throgin and Vatoris see nothing of that. Not even a drop of a wine comes through. You can also perform two turns of actions or suggest me what would Vatoris need to do, otherwise I'll make him feel unable to do anything but wait.
OOC:
Please describe your actions next round
Aug 2, 2024 8:31 am
I will cast Reduce on the stone block that is cutting us off from the hallway.

Aug 2, 2024 1:19 pm
OOC:
Yeah. I wanted to close it. Maybe not so wise... but hay! You never know what those mad villains will think of! ;)

Besides... without Tinks it would be really "not funny" situation for PC:) But it's interesting for me!
After the lid has closed Zean said:
"Huh... I'm not so surprised, but probably it was worth a try..." - he said disappointed, mostly about himself.

Seeing that they may be in really dire situation he nervously tries to find a way out from this situation.
"You see there anything of interest Ixion?" - Zean shouted hoping for some solutions.

Zean looks around:
"Hmm... this artificial light... maybe there is something behind it?" - he said thinking out loud. Then climbed on the sarcophagus and try to touch(or throw something - can be his maul - if it's to high) the celling where the light is strongest - to check if there may be something i.e. covered by the illusion.
OOC:
Probably he will not manage to do this this round, but he would also check the sarcophagus lid - how well it fits with everything else - could it be as good at the stone at the door - so the liquid wouldn't pour in?
Aug 2, 2024 4:53 pm
Seeing that the door closed behind him and that only him and Vatoris is out of the room, Throgin turns toward the door and stone that shut in his companions and sees if there is any way he can push or move it out of the way.

I am about certain this isn't happening

Aug 4, 2024 8:18 pm
"The wall's actually a stone valve, and there's a crawlspace back there, too. We might be able to get out through there but I can't see how to stop the wine flow."
Aug 5, 2024 7:52 am
OOC:
My proposition for Vatoris is to - if he managed to get the wine sample somehow on his way out - to investigate the "wine". If it's of magical origin, is it something flammable maybe - is it really a wine? Then he may start to look for some mechanism to open the stone door where he is standing.
Aug 5, 2024 10:17 am
OOC:
Not only Vatoris and Throgin have no sample of a vine. They don't even have a clue that the vine is in the tomb right now.
Sequence of actions was: 1. Stone block descends (Throgin and Vatoris run away). 2. Only when stone block sealed the entrance vine started pouring
With an effort and using his maul Zean manage to reach the ceiling. Maul cast a shadow just as if the light were normal, but Zean fail to find any other features of the ceiling.

Zean standing on the coffin as on an island, but Ixion is now in two feet deep vine.

Throgin try to push the stone block for no visible result. Vatoris is looking for any mechanisms but with just us much progress as Throgin.

Tinkara try to reduce the stone block, but it is not affected by the spell.

Vine comes at the same intensity as before.
OOC:

@valdattaMadun I'm afraid you may need to just wait until the rest of the party solve this, at least I personally don't see a way for you or Vatoris to help them.

Round 3 starts. What do you each do?
Aug 5, 2024 11:30 am
I will pull a cup from my pack and try drinking a bit of the wine.

Zean grimaced as he realized there was nothing he could do about the illusory light falling from the ceiling.

"Huh Tinks! Was thinking about it too... I just hope we won't have to drink A LOT of it..." - with those words Zean jumps off the coffin and walks hindered by the flowing wine towards the north-east gargoyle face, to see if there are any differences or similarities to what Ixion described about 'his' gargoyle mouth.
Aug 6, 2024 4:51 pm
OOC:

Tinkara drinks and realize it is indeed a vine. Good quality vine. Not enough to get drunk, but enough to taste it.

Zean manage to look into north-east gargoyle face a moment before it completely immerse in vine and he see there also a crawlway and a vine flowing through it.
A moment after mouth gets fully immersed in wine Zean feel something strange in the wine still pouring out of the mouth. His first reaction is that something changed because mouth is now fully immersed, but when he analyze impulses sent by subconscious mind he is quite sure some larger object in the same color as the wine just get into the tomb and past him.

Looking at Ixion climbing on the coffin and feeling that something isn't quite right with the wine-flood Zean hastily:
"Oh.. Friends... I think we are not alone anymore on this great wine fest... and I agree that it is a perfect moment for toast..." - Zean simply catches some of the wine on his hand and drinks it.
"Not bad!" - he started to move into Ixion direction towards the coffin.

While climbing on the coffin and then standing with his sword pulled out, pointed at the liquids and turning around his head to see the most of the room he can:
"But we have to make sure... it won't be our last drink. Brace yourselfs!"
OOC:
So he drank wine, moved diagonally NW - directly to the coffin with hasty moves, then climbed and pulled his sword out of its scabbard and now is ready to slash with his sword.

I don't have slightest idea how it will go in terms of 5E mechanics. Ready malle attack action maybe?
Aug 8, 2024 8:22 am
Tinkara uncountable tiny gaps between stones ceiling is made of. She also conclude that air is currently pushed through those gaps.
OOC:
FIX: I'm sorry to write "Vine" all the time, when I should have "Wine".
Zean and Ixion both get on the coffin a moment before Wine completely cover it. Since Wine level reached gargoyle heads it stopped splashing and wine mass is waving and making small fountains where streams meet. Suddenly fountains rise and reach at each of you, just as if someone were aiming. But the Wine forms into substance and that substance is trying to constrict each of you
OOC:
We start combat, but we will roll no initiative. You don't see your enemy before it attacks, but you are not surprised, so that makes no sense for PCs to act before enemy acts. That's my homebrew rule for this combat, let me know if anyone have a better idea how to solve such a situation in future (if it happens)

Meta info: enemy is some king of water elemental, but in the color of wine, so while in wine it is invisible. Reach 10 feet, so they can reach the flying Tinkara no problem. They will have advantage on attack rolls when/if you get into the wine, but your attacks against them already have disadvantage and you can't target them with spells/features that require you to see them. You do know their location nevertheless

Wine creatures change their tactics, they try to grab you and then retreat to corners either with or without you. Thanks you Faerie Fire you can see that they are descending into the wine and you barely see them - probably next round when more wine pours in you will not any more.

This time only Ixion manages to escape the hug. Creatures pull Zean and Tinkara with them hugging them painfully, Tinkara's is completely under wine, while Zean being larger still can breath with his head barely above wine level.

Zean seeing that Northern creature is taking Tinks with it underwater, got angry and tried to stop it with his sword. So water is 10 feet high already and you roughly have 10 seconds to talk your strategy. Talking after that moment will be impossible as you will be under water (I mean under wine) or you will start Suffocating. While not talking you will be able to keep your breath 2 minutes Zeam, Ixion 3 and Tinkare 4.

So please try to imagine this stress situation and try to keep your communication as laconic as possible. I would prefer to see no more than 10 words each.
Because wine is so hard to see through there will be no communication between players allowed going forward.

"Uh... maybe the idols of this tomb... would help..." - he said before catching some air in his lungs and diving in the wine, so he could access his equipment.

If others would be able to see, they would see that Zean is detaching his staff that he took from the moa's tomb and getting back to the surface. Catching his breath, he used the last amounts of space and air they head to say the words:
"NOW! Friend that I didn't invite, but stayed with me! Show me how this work! AWAKE GREAT PYTHON!" - then he rises the staff above water.

My aim here is to call the Great Snake from Staff of the Python and order it to swim on the other side of the channel made by gargoyles heads - that he and Ixion discover and see if it it can do something about wine flowing in.

As I don't think it is so strong and long to stop wine flowing in from all 4 holes?

I expect that by THE RULES probably Zean is still not attuned to the staff, but...
1. he/I proposed long rest few times:)
2. it's an extreme situtation so maybe Moa spirit will decide to help here - moved by desperate call from Zean and others or something like that? :)

I propose to roll for this("luck roll"?) to see if Moa would help with this, with odds set by you:)
Aug 19, 2024 1:19 pm
OOC:
You only needed a short rest not a long rest to attune. But you can't command it without that process. Do you remember if you had a short rest after to got the staff?
Besides I don't really want to argue with myself weather the huge creature snake could swim through 2 feet diameter crawl way. It doesn't seem possible neither mechanically nor logically (because snakes swim by making waves with their tails and it would have enough space in the crawl way to do so.

Aug 19, 2024 2:17 pm
OOC:
I'm not sure about this short rest - honestly.

I don't think it has to "swim per se" in there. In my imagination it only needs something to hold to with the rest of its body in order to... inject its head in the hole(holding its breath while doing so - if magical being needs it?). And as there are columns visible on the map near each of the holes it's seams technically possible:) if its body is not wider than this hole... at least. But as there was possibility to go there for by adult man, maybe it can?

But we can also look at the subcjet in different way(meta?) if there - on the other side - is anything of interest or that could help us in our miserable situation... if there is not we can ditch the idea and say it's just to big, and try something else. And this would be a mistake on Zean side.
Aug 19, 2024 2:52 pm
OOC:
OK I'll try to narrate the best I believe I can without giving you more power than the feature/item allows. And let's assume you had the short rest because were not on a hurry
GreyWord sent a note to Pedrop
The stuff animates and become larger, then even larger and heavier so that Zeanhave to drop it eventually. The next moment vine level increases and you see snakes head about 2 feet large. You can only imagine how fat and tall the snake is under the water, but it is certainly enormous. It looks at Zean waiting commands

Aug 19, 2024 3:14 pm

Hit: take a look at OOC in this post
Fix: I've only revealed 5 feet long of crawlway because that's how far you can see into the non-transparent red wine. You have no idea if crawlway is 10, 100 or 1000 feet long where it goes.
Aug 19, 2024 4:03 pm
Remembering where the heads are, I will follow the flow of wine down to one and attempt to access the crawlway. I'm hoping that the difficulty will ease as the chamber fills and it's no longer possible for the rate of flow to continue. I'll use my wand with a light spell cast to try to help me navigate.

You spend few moments hesitating and deciding your next action - wine reach the ceiling as you do so. Everyone takes a deep breath just a moment before and hold their breath.
OOC:
From this moment and on I would like to ask all players to describe their actions in private message to DM please. I will tell back to everyone as much information as rest you you are supposed to know. I will also be asking you for your actions in private to not give away any information to other players. Not sure if this secrecy is worth it, let me know if you don't find it fun

With respect to our 4th player, I will fast forward the story now, please post your PC reactions/feeling or even details of the events I am going to describe briefly
Zean swims back into the hall and met Tinkara on his way. It is not easy to communicate underwater but eventually he manages to pull Tinkara toward the exit he have found. Besides that was the direction she was swimming already. Both get breath in the tunnel that elevates upwards toward air and return to find Ixion, worried about his breath. But Ixion managed to break through wooden ceiling and found space with an air.
Zean also notice that the sneak has made no damage to the stone pillar it is trying to Constrict, but becomes weaker and weaker. He realize snake who is able to breath water can't really breath wine and turn it back into stuff to save it from dying.

You spend some time trying to figure out what do do next, when after 10 minutes the stone block sealing the tomb rises back up to its niche in the ceiling. The wine cascades down the west tunnel, pouring down the grand staircase.
OOC:
@valdattaMadun you are back in the game!
[ +- ] MAP (ignore wine please)
You figure out there are 4 similar rooms that were filled with wine (which is all gone now). and only one crawlaway allowed to also get further and upwards so somehwere.
OOC:
If you crawl that corridor towards SW let me know who is first to crawl and if others follow him right behind or at a distance. You can't get past each other in this crawlway.
Or perhaps you want to do/go anywhere else ?
Aug 29, 2024 11:42 am
"I could go up that crawlway and see what's back there. I'm probably the best candidate. But I think we need to rest, because I'm not in great shape and running out of magic. Plus I'd like to get this staff bonded. Your choice if we investigate the crawlway, and before or after resting."

I busy myself wringing the wine out of my hair and clothes.

"We're all going to smell like a tavern floor."
Aug 29, 2024 6:02 pm
Throgin punches the wall after hearing what happened.

I am sorry...I should have been there it wouldn't have been that bad. Resting might be a good idea before we go up the crawlway...I will stand guard
Aug 29, 2024 6:13 pm
"I think we might be better off to rest in the hallway. Bad wine memories."
Aug 30, 2024 7:31 am
Zean while trying to get some of the sticky wine remains of his armor:
"Yeah! I must say I'm missing very much the underground river right now... I think I will visit it in the next occasion. For creatures with good smell we are probably detectable like form few miles away now..."

He sights:
"But I'm exhausted too... and almost out off my electric energy within me... We should rest. And this area seam to be a good place. Different plane probably, the main trap was already triggered so... maybe... and I hope I'm not saying this words to early... one of the safer place to rest in this damn tomb... The wine is gone and we know where is the exit... here is more space... but you may be right that hallway will be better? And yes... let's go by the crawlway after we feel a little better."
OOC:
I'm also voting for long rest.
Aug 30, 2024 8:18 am
OOC:
Long rest that is. I need players to agree on where are they resting:

For the night party squeezes into the short hallway to spend their first night in this dungeon. Night pass mostly without incidents those of you who keep the watch witness a strange distortion ripple through the air. Everyone else also wake up.
OOC:
But no it did not affect your long rest, just a minor effect
When you finally all wake up ready for next adventures, you observe following:
Shaggy fur begun to grow all over the Tinkara's body.
Black spot of a decent size formed on Throgin's body. Throgin can recall it's the place where mummy bite him last day. The spot smells of rot and Throgin don't feel as good.
OOC:

Everyone but Throgin could take a Long Rest
Throgin get all benefits of long rest except for his HP. Current HP stays as is, but your Max HP is deduced by 10. Your best guess should be that Throgin is affected by a curse
What's going on with Tinkara is a question you can try to figure out as players, but mechanically character is not affected in any way.

What do you do?
Aug 31, 2024 3:46 pm
OOC:
Can we now mark items as attuned?

As long as the hair is purple like the rest of her hair, Tinkara is unconcerned.
Sep 1, 2024 7:18 am
OOC:

Yes please do attune to all of your items and remind me if I have not provided their abilities. I recommend saving the description into you character sheet.
The fur on the Tinkara's body is brown. As you look all over your body you also find white spots, but none is purple.
Sep 1, 2024 1:34 pm
"Damn! There goes my color scheme! I hope we find some treasure, I'm going to be spending a fortune on hair dye."

I sigh deeply.

"Does anyone have a cure disease or remove curse for Throgin?"
Sep 1, 2024 9:39 pm
Ixion woke with a slight headache from all the wine but was otherwise no worse for wear, unlike Tink and Fist.

"I have antitoxin and holy water but I have no prayers for that," he admitted sadly. "One day and this place has already starting changing us. We must cut off the root of evil before we all succumb to its touch."
Sep 3, 2024 7:27 am
"Oh... Tinks... you look... a little different..." - Zean rubs his eyes in amazement, still very sleepy after waking up recently - "... whoo... it's not a dream!" - he crawls backwards a few steps from his blanket, as he sobers from sleepiness in a movement, when he realize he is already awake.

"Hmmm... what happened to you when you took the ring Tinks? Did something tired to possess you? I had no time for it earlier, but I wanted to say to all of you that I have a guest with me... apparently it's Moa spirit that is usually represented in Jaculis form... wasn't the ring you took in coffin of monkey-like spirit, Tinks? I wonder... if my skin will start to look snake-like next day too..."

Then he looked at Throgin with concern.
OOC:
So could Zean use:
[ +- ] Lvl 2: Lesser Restoration; 1A; Touch
on Throgin black spots?

Also - I think - somewhere you told me that apparently Zean has less spells then he could considering his level and class? Is it still true? Can I add those spells now if that is a case? (of course I will look for something for curses if the Restoration is not applicable here... :) )
Sep 3, 2024 12:39 pm
OOC:

@Pedrop you can always cast Lesser Restoration on a creature. Just say you do that that mark the spell slot off. Nevertheless as I hinted before it should seem more like a curse that disease to anyone. Actually, since your PC has proficiency in medicine - I'll tell you he knows a lot aboud diseases and none he knows have even similar effect on a person.
[ +- ] Rules on cleric spellcasting
@everyone - please don't forget to look at party shared resources available by clicking on DM icon. You did find a scroll of remove curse in a chest one level above.
Sep 4, 2024 2:11 am
"Remind me not to touch anything ever again," Ixion said with a shudder followed by a short-lived smile. "Didn't we find a hex purification scroll? Only one scroll for all of you, though..."
Sep 4, 2024 2:22 am
"Being furry is not going to kill me. Tend to those more in need."
Sep 4, 2024 3:15 am
"Being furry may only be the first step, Tink. Gods know what might come next."
Sep 4, 2024 3:59 am
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
Sep 4, 2024 8:58 pm
OOC:
Thanks for all explanations. So:
- I'm adding one missing(as Zean is allowed to have 14, but had 13) spell: Remove Curse 3rd lvl; and changing Flame Strike to Greater Restoration at 5th lvl (as Destructive Wave seams to be better spell and looking what is happening in this tomb - Restoration could come in handy quite a few times... ;) ) I used Legacy versions. Hope it is ok?
Zean after examining Throgin's black spots:
"Brother... let's fry this impureness in its infancy... by the cleansing power and speed of thunder!" - Zean exclaimed with passion, while taking out his Eye of the Storm and putting it close to strange areas on Throgin's skin. After moment of focus electrical current like from Tesla coil starts to flow between the Eye and Throgin body.
OOC:
So using one 3rd lvl slot and:
[ +- ] Remove Curse; 1A; Touch; Instant
Sep 5, 2024 4:01 am
Throgin tired from the fights and confused thanks Zean for the remove curse
Sep 5, 2024 5:47 am
Throgin's spot shrinks and disappears as Zean do his magic. Throgin feel relieved, but still not rested well.
OOC:
Curse is gone and you will be able to restore your health as normal in future rests.
@valdattaMadun Please also increase your PC Max HP back to original (no more is deduced by 10)
Sep 5, 2024 1:20 pm
"Aaaand... DONE! Thanks to the Holly Current, the stains should be no more!" - Zean concludes his magic without hiding his satisfaction.

Turning to their flying companion: "Tinks? Maybe you want some of this too?" - he rises his brews again, trying not to laugh, seeing how funny - normally slender and very graceful - body of Tinks look... now fully covered with fur.

"Or we should be heading up, through the tunnel? Already?"
Sep 5, 2024 2:10 pm
"To be honest, I'm not sure if this is a curse, or a side effect of the 'invisible friend' that's been hanging out with me since the room where we found this ring. I would hate to imply that it's a curse when there's been no ill effect aside from a fur coat. Let's hold off on any attempt at removal until and if it proves to be detrimental. I mean, every girl likes a fur coat."

"Yeah, I'm ready to head up through the tunnel if everyone else is good."

When you return to the tomb, you are surprised to see no crawlways behind the gargoyle mouths.
All four huge stone gargoyle heads protrude from the walls at the same places they were before.
The room still smells of wine and coffin closed just like before sparkles in sunlight streaming down from the chamber's vaulted ceiling.

Perhaps it was all but a dream: the wine, the wine monsters ? you may even wonder
OOC:
The room looks exactly like it did when you first entered it. There are not a single feature that would remind of last day's events. Even if there are valves in the gargoyle mouths they are all closed.

"Strange... let's think..." - Zean started to pet his beard deep in thoughts - "Huh! Do you remember the strange effect that we have seen during the night? My hypothesis is that... if we are in some kind of pocket dimension/plane... it may be refreshing... or should I say resetting after some time? Maybe once per whole day? At midnight? So... I think... if we would open the coffin again - everything would go as the last time... and the wine monsters will be here too... we are richer for our experiences... but still if we open the coffin we have to kill the monsters again before going the small, narrow tunnels. I'm really curious what is there... But do you have any ideas what to do DIFFERENTLY to not fight them?"
Sep 6, 2024 12:03 pm
"My brain says if this pocket dimension is resetting daily, there's unlikely to be anything in it that we can remove and take back to our reality.
Sep 9, 2024 9:15 am
"Hmmm... fair enough! Nothing psychical... at least. What about some clues? Information that can be used out side of it? But is it worth such a risk..." - Zean clearly at a loss, stroking his beard.

"Hmmm... maybe we should prepare for what WILL HAPPEN if the room will behave in the same way after opening the coffin's lid? Maybe we could block the stone block from lowering somehow or prevent wine flowing in through the gorgogyles mouths and eyes?"

With does words Zean checks the stone block hanged at the entrance - for any lowering mechanism that could be blocked or broken, and then goes to gorgogyles' faces and checks them(every 4!). In particular he checks if their eyes, nostrils or mouths could be somehow closed - maybe simply by pressing them in specific way?

Note: the 21 on int check will certainly make Tinkara come with at least a few alternative ideas, but I will give other players opportunity to brainstorm their own ideas before I share Tinkara's.
I'm can that you will fail to put any pitons into the lid. The thing is magically protected against any damage or attempt to change the form (i.e. make a hole in it by a piton).
Zean find gorgogyles' faces to be just what they seem to be: stone. No matter how hard he try, nothing changes as he touch any part.

OOC:
Fair enough. Just floating a thought.
Sep 12, 2024 7:43 am
Discussing with Zean and Throgin who previously opened the lid Tinkara suggest to use the magic rod and ropes to rise the lid.
Vatoris with his engineering skills suggest that to rise so heavy lid one would need a wheel and at least 4 ropes and proper tools to grab the 4 corners
[ +- ] Vatoris idea sketch
he don't have idea hot to address the lack of grappling hooks and wheel though

The next idea Tinkara has - she remembers it was enough time for people closer to the doors to leave the room while block were descending. And she have seen Ixion using dimension doors spell in earlier encounters. So this could work: one person rise lid closer to exit, while Ixion hold it at the other end. When trap is triggered the person closer to exit run away, but Ixion teleports out.

Throgin believes though that with his Barbaian agility he may manage to get out of the the room from the further distance...

Ixion meanwhile note that he could teleport one person with him, so it's 100% safe plan.
OOC:
So with 21 I give you my 3 ideas:
1. Find/construct proper tools to do the engineering project as thorsman99 suggested
2. Only two persons in, open lid, dimension door out
3. Only two persons in, Throgin hold further end of the lid, both run out as soon as trap triggered. With barbarian speed 40 he will get out safe at the very last moment
Sep 12, 2024 9:24 am
OOC:
Option 3 seam cost free and still semi-certain? Or there will be rolls for it? If not, let's do 3rd option in my opinion.

Let's say Tinkara did the math and you know no rolls would be required for 3rd

"Go for it, guys. If the wine weirds come out when the door opens, I'll be ready to blast them."
Sep 13, 2024 6:08 am
After a discussion everybody agree to follow the risky plan (as back up Ixion could dimension door both ways to get Throgin out, but it appears to not be necessary, barbarian demonstrate real fast acceleration and is out of the room with a crouching at the end.

Once the entrance is sealed you have to patiently wait. After an hour entrance opens and wine pours down the grand stairways and you can't see the creatures (you remember they were invisible in the wine).

After you get into the tomb you follow the crawl way still wet of wine to find it opens into another room.
OOC:
Because it goes up you see very little of the room before you actually get your head into the room, so please let me know who is the first to reach the room entrance. The room is dark, so please note if you have any source of light with you or not

Zean is first to make it into the room. The air here reeks of sulfur and brimstone. "Surely this is one of the 9 gods. My unseen friend suggested that more salt was needed. Does anyone have any? All of the tombs so far have provided valuable items; I should not like it if we later found that a key piece of the puzzle was left here.

Now, the plaque said 'only a jewel can tame the frog'. We haven't found any jewels on this level... yet.

Might be inside a square skull. Might be salt in there. Anything happen when you shake it?

Could also be that the jewel is in another room, or even in the pocket dimension somewhere.

So, I think we should go looking for that jewel, and once we find it, return here to investigate the coffin. Let's make sure its not in here."

I fly around the pentagram, grab the square skull, and give it a shake. Do I hear anything rattling around in there?

I mean going in the circular portal in the direction where the dead goat-person lays. I think last time we did go the other way, so probably were transported to different plane. To me it looks like there are two pocket dimension and our: original one?

Just to double check you are all moving back, then move through the portal on top of cylindrical hallway, repeat the process of flooding the wine (that will take another hour of waiting) and finally get to the pentagram to grab some salt from there, right?

"Oh a little boat! We like boats with Throign!" - Zean comments jokingly after looking down, visibly happy that they dealt fast with magical bats. Then he looks around.

"Wait... where is Thorigin? Did he say anything about where he is heading with Vatoris?" - there was a slight expression of worry on Zean face, but quickly dispelled by the thought that two such strong individuals should be safe together, for now.

"Going back to the boat: there is no good ship, without good ropes and crew. I think we should board it now..." - with another smile Zean starts to proceed a rope from his explorer’s pack and tries to find a suitable place to tie it strong, so he and others willing could climb with it down the shaft.

"I didn't see where they went, Zean, but they know better than to wander off in this evil place."

Ixion couldn't help but smile at Zean's boating enthusiasm.

"It's probably a funerary boat, the kind that takes you to the other side after death. I don't think you'd like the trip. Rope climbing isn't my strong suit but I'll do my best to follow you down."
Oct 9, 2024 7:32 am
"Trip is a trip. As long you are able to get back home..." - Zean smiled, winked to Ixion and started to descend on the rope as first, after flying and nimble Tinks.
Oct 9, 2024 7:52 am
OOC:
I've narrated result of you looking at dwarf skeleton in this post. There is nothing much "investigate" - it's just a skeleton body ("clad in a tattered yellow turban and dusty chain mail, and clutching a bronze shield" as described before) , so I ignored the roll.
Zean find nothing to tie a rope to but the realize he could simply make it around the devil's face. Descending is only 25 feet, so that's not an issue. He slowly descents into the room
OOC:
Since no spikes below descending is free, you may need to do DC 10 athletics check to climb back up later, if you choose to.
Oct 9, 2024 8:23 am
After his descent, Zean starts looking around the chamber and then seeing Tinks checking the skeleton body, he asked her:
"On what kind of symbol is it lying? I can make a bet with someone that it is not the best symbol to stand on..." - Zean smiled still analyzing their new environment.

Now as you spend time in the room you realize something strange about east wall - after closer investigation Tinkara realize there is probably an exit blocked by stone block similar to one that blocked wine room. That could have been how the dead dwarf entered.

Zean notice a tiny eyeball emerge from the mold on the south wall and scrutinize all three of you before disappearing back.

Ixion huffed as he finally made it down the rope. Despite being good with a sword as an Arcadet, he was never good at PE.

"Sphinxes... Any of you good at riddles?" he asked his companions.

Wow, a pure gold, it must be worth a few thousand gp at least Vatoris is impressed by the golden sarcophagus.
OOC:

For some reason they pictured sarcophagus grey, while it is pure gold. I think they simply wanted to contrast with the barge.

Since a player suggested in another thread to lift skeleton - here is what I've figured out. Chainmail weights 55 and shield weight 6 more. Adding skeletal remains, clothes and some small stuff (such as pouches) hid beneath chainmail it's about 75 lbl to lift. Although Tinkara herself weight half of that rules wise her carry capacity is 120 and if she would leave backpack on a dais I have no reason she can't lift that skeleton. But I want to see player's decision for his PC to try to lift the heavy object up.
Oct 11, 2024 6:59 pm
I'm not interested in lifting up any skeletons. I'll fly over by the door and mold on the south, and have a close looks at both, being careful not to touch anything.

Could you drive one of the pitons into the ceiling... just above the skeleton... then thread the rope through it... attach it to the skeleton's backbone... and get back here fast? Zean looks at the "hanged skeleton" if he may show any new interesting equipment / possessions of his former owner other then chainmail and shield, then ties the rope to boat or sarcophagus - remembering well enough that in last chamber the stone door opened after about 10 minutes. He spends this time to investigate the symbols on the floor, still not being brave or stupid enough to leave the stone dais.

Behind the secret door, water fills a carved stone font, just behind it a still humanoid figure looks into the water. The man is tall with lean yet firm muscles. His thick head of auburn hair is streaked with fainter tan and browns. He has long pointed ears like an elf, but the short fur and tufts of hair at their ends marks him as unlike any elf you know or have heard of. His face too is slightly off wit a wider but flat nose that resembles one of a beast. Wearing no armor but carrying a longbow, club, shield, and pack. As he moves to look at the party he shifts to a combat ready stance and slings his bow over his shoulder but does not make any aggressive moves. Looking toward the others he states calmly.

Lude was running, running. She couldn't remember from what or who, just the feeling of impending doom behind her. Her heavy mailed steps ricocheted and rebounded off the walls of the stair as she climbed; her breath rasped raggedly in her throat. Bursting into a room, she saw two figures coming in from the other side.

It always came to this. She put her back to the wall and prepared to cast. They did not attack though. The dark mailed one approached her own golden steel form, talking words that couldn't come together over the sound of the blood pounding in her ear.

Then things got strange as the mailed figure got distracted by the wall behind her. She didn't remember much, but male humanoids never got distracted by walls when she was standing in front of them, that was just instinctively wrong. Age. A half century of living had taken the sheen off the beauty she had always traded on. The bruise to her ego hurt as if he'd hit her with a mace. Still, confused and distracted as the figure seemed, it didn't seem hostile.

Hello? She attempted to speak to it. At least she was used to men not looking her in the eyes when they talked. It seemed almost familiar. Hello? Are you . . .

She wasn't quite sure what to ask. She didn't remember why she had come or who with. She did remember this room and being forced into the wine as her breath failed her. Invisible monsters or just another gap in her memory?

I am Ludmilla Sheyn, Tante Lude (pronounce the e in Tante as a short e, pronounce the e in Lude as a long e) to my former comrades. It is a pleasure to see a person again. It seems . . . long since I did.

"Greetings... Tante Lude! As I would really prefer for us to become your new comrades, rather enemies. But you have to for give me... as we have seen many strange things in those tombs already, but you will have to tell me: what are you doing here... alone? Where are your old comrades?" - with those words Zean's full attention was about to move on the woman... if only something wouldn't flicker behind her...

"What this!?" - Zean almost shouted, he looked at still looking confused woman with a serious frown and continued - "Are you trying to pull us in some kind of trap? What's hidden behind you??"

He instinctively pushed her a little to the side and he jumped towards the wall. He touched the wall in few suspicious places, making it start to open. The time taken by the hidden door opening he spend on drawing his sword. And then he saw him... a strangely 'alive' decoration.
"Hello Nix... and I thought it was us who could drank, much too much wine recently and have the possibility of having hard time with remembering things..." - Zean tried to joke, but still being very serious, lowered his sword a little and relaxed seeing that ANOTHER newcomer shows no aggressive intentions and signs of complete lack of his surrounding.

"You two... know each other... maybe? Drank the same potion or something?" - Zean looked from woman to half-elf and back again.

Zean was very suspicious about all of this... two persons... not remembering too much in such short period of time. Have they triggered some big... changes (?) in this tomb, that have awaken some sort of magical "shift in reality" or in-teleportation of new entities?

But during his many pirate voyages, getting to know and unfortunately loosing many people on his way, Zean learned that all life is valuable... as long it doesn't trie to bit off your head or is magically induced. And you never know when and how you can meet your new best friend or at least great ally. So he was the one that took the first steps to newcomers... trying to feel them and judge... how big treat they could be for him and his friends he felt responsible for.

Lude looked hard at the young man behind the wall.

No, I do not know this person.

Nor do I remember recent events. I was young and at court. Then it seemed I died but I didn't and was older and in a temple training. Then I came here and died again, but again I find myself alive. It's very confusing.

I do remember that the malicious being that created this place did so to entertain himself with the deaths and confusion of those who ventured within. Mayhaps I was one such that came here to protect a young lover, and was killed. Or nearly killed. Or was killed and returned with my short term memory wiped. I might even be a simulacrum or a clone, I know not. But I do know I wish not to die yet again and would be very happy to leave this place. So, if you wish, I will follow with you so long as you do not turn out to be another twisted trick of this maze.

Looking at the woman Nix also shakes his head in denial. I also do not know her, and I do not drink strong liquors or even ale. again he shakes his head and peers around, searching for clues.

Perhaps another trap that moved me to this area?

From beyond the man who opens the door you hear the sound of wings beating the air, and then a lilac colored fairy darts into view. Small and light like all of her kind, she bears butterfly wings and wields a staff with the head of a ram. Her voice is like the sound of tiny bells.

Slightly confused and worried, though encouraged that they are at least talking before attacking, Nyx aks I was unaware of any others in the area having entered the mountain ruins. How did you get past my people to enter this place?

At Tinkara's comments Nyx's ears twitch and he glances at her but continues to search the room for clues to the changes in his circumstances.

In response to the tall mans comments he replies Have you not had to contend with beasts and other creature in the area beside the traps placed by the accursed crafters of these ruins? I have no quarrel with you at this time but I assure you I live and will fight to keep it so. "Hey, I see we have some zombies... maybe, in any case some type of undead, sticking their heads out of the holes in this door. They seem to be chained up and have a bit in their mouths. I doubt we should leave them for later."

"I'm Ixion. Sorry to meet you under these circumstances," he told the newcomers before moving beside Tinkara.

"Like hunting dogs, perhaps. Gods forbid they're meant to pull some infernal chariot."

Ixion had Blæcsæx to hand, the mighty blade ready for the grim yet necessary task of dispatching the undead.

Thank you Nyx, Ixian, a pleasure to make your acquaintance as well, despite the circumstances.

That hallway to the West, I seem to remember. A font of wine and invisible monsters pulling people under and drowning them.

As for the rest, have you made any progress on the words of that plaque?

The "dead abhor sunlight" line might apply to those zombies if there's a trick to let a little natural light in.

From what I gather, just killing chained up zombies isn't typical. More typical is their death or an attack leading to some other threat.

Upon learning about the plaque Nyx suggests The section stating "The ring is a path to another tomb" may apply to the pool of water. It may take me back to where I came from but I doubt it will be that easy.

As for "dead abhorring sunlight", perhaps the door is opened by shining sunlight onto the undead in the door?

I'll take up a hovering position out in the open area, about 20' from the door with the chained undead. I'll ascend enough to get an angle on the creatures when/if my companions are engaged with them. I'll be ready to attack with spells.

Wait one moment please.

Tante Lude carefully examines this hallway and the doors leading into it, being careful not to get too close to the rotting creatures. She is looking for notches, niches, levers, or other ways to possibly open a skylight or the like upon the area. She pays particular attention to the ceiling as we have a flying creature with us.

Everyone is very carefully approaching door looking into all directions looking at every step they make while keeping one aye on the zombies. They stop near doors afraid to reach zombie heads. Zombie eyeless heads randomly turn from flying Tinkara to Lude and back. As if sniffing the air with they empty noses or watching the live flesh with their empty aye holes.

You realize the three holes in the doors match zombie heads, so they can't reach you unless decide to put heads out the holes, but they seem too hungry for your flesh to avert.

Nyx sends his familiar to investigate the door. Looking through it's eyes he tries to determine if anything can be seen through the holes around the zombie heads. If the room beyond can be seen at all and a safe location is available then perhaps he can dismiss his familiar then resummon it within the room. I'm sorry if it was not clear the first time. You can't see much into the room mostly because skeleton heads block the vision. Not because of the lack of light. I only noted the lack of light inside because one player wanted to send the only creature that would suffer of it.

Nyx manage to get the seed into the room and take risk summoning flying monkey in the space he don't see lucky enough monkey is alive and zombies don't care about it. Through your familiar ayes you see that The gnashing heads belong to three zombies that are chained to a pulley bolted to the ceiling on the south side of the door. (you can't know what that pulley would do when turned, but it's obvious zombie moving south would trigger pulley rotation)

You can also observer the rest of the room: Six glass cauldrons brimming with humanoid bones line the walls of this tomb, at the center of which stands an ancient chariot bearing a bronze sarcophagus with treasure strewn atop it. Paintings on the chariot's body show a tall bird with a long, sharp beak. On the south wall, a bronze shield bears the embossed image of a Chultan warrior carrying a spear, below an inscription that reads, "Bow before no one." Four bronze statues stand on pedestals to either side of the shield. They depict Chultan warriors: one holding a sword, two with spears, and one missing its face.

After ensuring the monkey has the light source and is relatively safe he relays to the others the information he has gleened. If we can get the zombies to retreat then the door may open. Acorrding to the clue the undead fear the sun. Have you found any symbols of the sun or is it perhaps as simple as a torch?

With a word and gesture Nyx cups his hand which now holds a magical flame. He aproaches and holds the flame
Oct 30, 2024 11:06 am
"Just a thought. Is anyone capable of turning the zombies? That would get them to move south and activate the pulley, perhaps opening the door. Otherwise, I suggest we stop dithering and just put the creatures out of their misery."
Oct 30, 2024 1:51 pm
Still trying to drive the undead back Nyx replies with obvious doubt about the simplicity of slaying the undead allowing access to the room If they die where they are the chain will still be taut. It looks like we need a way to force them to back up. But if you think you can fly into there once they are slain and open the door from within we can go with that idea.

"Yes... me and my Eye Of The Storm will gladly turn our gazes at the Zombies... and force them back... away from us. As far as they will be able." - Zean proclaimed while preparing his Eye Of The Storm.

He stood before three disgusting heads... and pushed the Eye in front of him... making the Eye start to blink... and with each blink of the Holy Eye... there was a very strong flash of light... as lightning would unfocus itself and instead of hitting the one target, it would try to ionize the whole area, making zombies scream in pain.

Lude still felt vague and unfocused. Everyone else was solving the mystery and creating ideas and all she had were questions. Looking through the holes where (if) Zean's lightnings had driven back the ghouls, she saw the features of the room, as clearly as if were outlined in bright light.

Quote:
Bow before no one.
I assume that means the faceless statue but why bow? The chariot could represent the sun; the sun god is usually pictured driving the sun chariot across the skies, though that might be a stretch.

Were the 12 foot high ceilings normal? If not, they might represent parts of this room's tricks and traps. She couldn't remember. It was . . . irritating.

There is also an amulet, that could probably be magical

Turning back to Tante: "Yes, we have to definitely neutralize those cauldrons somehow... let me try some things."
OOC:
First Zean would look again at bronze shield looking for some interesting details. If it can be moved he will try to check if there is anything on the wall behind of it. Then he would look at the bronze statues on both sides of the shield. He will also look around to check if there is something resembling a missing face of one of the statue bronze warrior in the room.

He will try on the mask we found at the beginning of the dungeon and look through it at the room, finally - if nothing changed to this point he will put the mask on the statue with a missing face. If nothing happens again - he will take back the mask.

Finaly he will try to cast: Dispel Magic on the shield - preferably as ritual (or how is it called in 5E?) so not to loose the magic slot.

Is there a way to identify what exactly this amulet does?
Nov 8, 2024 11:37 am
OOC:

- Could you clarify your goal of "put the mask on the statue with a missing face". I can understand how you can put a mask on a statue WITH face, but where would you put it if there is no face?

- in 5e only spells that has "(ritual)" in their description can be case as a ritual, more over dispel magic is not guaranteed to work. Look at it's description For each spell of 4th level or higher on the target, make an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level. On a successful check, the spell ends.

Whenever you try to dispel magic you mark off a spell slot and roll 1d20+spell casting modifier (no proficiency added). Note though that it can only end spells cast on thing. It will not turn magical item into mundane. I as a DM may rule that some magical effects other than spells may be suppressed for a period of time though.

- Identify spell exists or you can try to attune to amulet over 1 hour short rest to get an idea of how it affect you

The detail I missed to provide:
the bronze shield hangs from the wall on leather straps.
OOC:
You would need to cut them loose in order to look behind. Statues are just statues no matter from what angle to look at them
Putting a mask on yourself does nothing notable . You can't see anything else in the room: neither something resembling a missing face nor anything else.
Nov 8, 2024 7:00 pm
Looking up from his examination of the chariot, where he is studying the amulet without touching it for now, Nyx comments Perhaps the mask goes on the statue without a face or if there are 3 they go on the other statues?

After examining the chariot and amulet he looks around the room for any marking of the sun or anything related to that

Zean looks around, especially at the cauldrons with bones, preparing for another strike of his Anti-undead Thunder Flash... [Turn Undead] in case the bones would start to rise.

With the shield already face down, Lude takes a deep breath and calms herself to allow her perceptions (23 passive) to alert her if anything else in the room is reacting to the shield's action.

If it stays relatively quiet for a round, Lude volunteers:

I think it would be a good time for me to give some aid to one of our quick reacting brethren so they can get the jump on any new tricks. If someone would allow me, I can give them the vigilant blessing, making them faster to react to threats . . . for a bit.

Out of initiative, this one was a flawless. What do you do now?
Nov 13, 2024 2:24 pm
Nyx looks over the shield to see if it can be worn as a normal shield and reasons that since it can not attack while face down then whomever dons the shield should be safe and simple needs to ensure that the shield does not point towards any of their allies.
If these items are the key to progressing then I say we just prepare and take the amulet to see what happens. We can try destroying some of the bones in the cauldrons now as they seem a likely threat.
OOC:
Would golems be sensed by the Detect magic>
Nov 13, 2024 5:08 pm
OOC:
Haha the more I play PBP the more I understand how hard it is to properly explain things.
The shield is Large object - I would say it is about 6 feet wide and 8 feet high.
As you study the other side of the shield you find no straps or a handle attached. It seems to be a decoration - not a piece of armor a giant would carry.
Nov 14, 2024 1:36 pm
OOC:
Decorative shield or disk then. The picture shows it being quite large, i just fixated a bit on the word shield and went from there.
How about the golem thing? They are sometimes listed as animated objects and other times as creatures. Basically the question is if the statues are golems would detect magic reveal some of the enchantment that created them? I have seen both ways used so it seems to be up to the DM

After this short stressful moment Tante Lude shakes her head and suddenly feel like some part of "her" returned. There are no new memories, but self-confidence, she take another round around the room carefully looking at all hints and (based on various tiny clues) manages to find a secret door in the wall, opening the door reveal short and narrow corridor. Ancient cobwebs fill this corridor. Corridor's midpoint features an arched alcove. Within the alcove, a dusty bottle stands on a table.

"I don't have other ideas and that I got, didn't worked. So maybe just do as Nyx said: let's take the amulet, check it by using and open the sarcophagi? I feel that my Eye of the Storm still have some electricity to turn some more undead if they will indeed come from those cauldrons... but maybe we should first turn them over? "
OOC:
Are these cauldrons movable? If possible, Zean would like to overturn one of them and pour its contents onto the ground.
Nov 18, 2024 2:37 pm
Let us know what you find or if you need help he says to Tnate, and sends his familiar into the tunnel ahead of her to investigate.

I will grab the amulet when all are ready. Nyx informs the others as he examines it closely without touching it. He then scatters a few seeds around the room to entangle the enemy should they need to swarm en mass. But before that If you are ready I will start destroying some of these bones and he moves to where he can see into one of the cauldrons but quickly move to grab the amulet if needed and produces a batch of flame to hurl at the bones in the cauldron.
OOC:
Don't recall a description of the amulet itself. I am just uncertain what the"sun" is. But perhaps it has something to do with the chariot, gold, the torc or amulet? I feel I am missing something . . .

I will start burning bones tonight unless I hear otherwise for other players

Tante Lude moves to the corridor. Just outside the doorway, she pauses and reaches out with her mind, gripping the flask in the alcove and pulling it free and float it toward herself until it comes to her grasp. (Telekinesis)

Once she has it, she examines it carefully, looking for runes or other signs to indicate it's use . . . or what the dead mind that designed this place wants her to think it is.
Nov 19, 2024 9:01 am

Guys, genie bottle here. Don't know the language but given this place's general character, more likely to attack us than help us. I'll hand on to it in case we need the help in a tight spots unless it is needed to solve a puzzle or save a life.

Burning the bones sounds smart, no oil here though. Perfume probably isn't helpful.

With a wave of his hand Nyx sends his familiar to assist Tinkara with her investigation (help action or perception check)

Looking around Nyx suggests questioningly If the cauldron can be moved, perhaps we can simply take them outside and dump them over the railing?

To test this possibility he moves to one of them and sees if he can tip it at all. Figuring if they can tip them a bit it will be very easy to roll along the base rim vs trying to lift or push them.
Nov 21, 2024 1:30 am
"Dumping them over the railing might just mean we deal with them later rather than sooner. We'll hopefully survive to reach the lower levels."

Tinkara manages not to touch any object as she is flying, but catch most of the cobwebs with her wings and rise the dust from the table and floor. Sneezing she realize what's probably obvious to everyone by this moment: the whole dungeon you have been walking through is considerably tidy and kept. Not clean, but maintained. You can even recall roots in upper level of the dungeon freshly cut.
But here is this alcove - for whatever reason - none has been visiting it for years, maybe decades.

While the fairy examines the dusty alcove, Tante Lude watches her carefully. The dust kicked up makes it hard to see but she wasn't harmed either by the room or by the dust it seems. AS the dust settles, Lude carefully examines the floor between her and the alcove with the table. Then, sliding her feet across the dusty tiles to avoid stepping down on something hard and to distribute her weight better, she moves to just outside the alcove and stops to examine it again closely both low and high.

Still don't know what all the dust was hiding but Lude was thinking she should return to the room they were in before the cauldrons of bones start spewing out undead.

Nyx was simply looking for signs of them being golem or traps etc. If they are statue then the should be one piece with their pedestals but if they are golems then the are likely simply standing atop the pedestals. Thinking along those lines. So the technical definition would cover that from my point of view.
Upon the discovery of the other room Nyx sends his familiar to look it over, having never been there himself. He will step back and glance through his familiars eyes for a moment to assess the situation.

Not seeing a clear path forwards Nyx hefts his club. Shall we shatter these? h says tapping one of the cauldrons. Or we can put the shild on top of one of them to see if it will shattr the bones? I really don't want to turn RPG into geometry or physics. I love 5e for it don't have such mechanical thing as "direction you are looking at" or "behind you". I ruled that if your initiative don't beat shield initiative it was not possible for you to rise it and put it on top of cauldron i a way to never be a valid target of a shot.

I can also tell you that if you do your spider plan it will require no skill check and shield will not be able to hit you (the spider).

P.S. If all you want is to destroy objects you can simply break them with your melee weapons. It will work most of the cases. I don't understand why are you investing so much effort and risk to do it this fancy way.

I suggest you all step into the hall to avoid further attacks while I finish the attempt. I believe the cauldron with break and the shield may be held up so it may strike at us again. Should anything go wrong I will return the shield to the floor.

Warned by Nyx and by the look of the cauldron everyone quickly moves out of the room and Nyx turns into a spider crawling on the ceilings.
Spider the fire it's web at the shield and makes sure it hold tide and could move it.
Now as neither of you see the face of the shield you can't see if it just run out of magic or what, but no new spears are coming out of the shield.

So I assume everyone including familiars are out of the room with chariot - only the giant spider is in just above the cauldron with the shield on top of it. Shield stop firing it's spears

Tante Lude could see that the skeleton problem required a way to take out multiple skeletons and, she thought, break the cauldrons producing them.

She uses her mental power (telekinesis) to try to move the closest skeleton away from her and her path, then moves up off the wall to a more central location, one in which as many of the cauldrons as possible are within a 15 foot radius around her, taking attacks of opportunity from the skeletons as needed.

Reaching into twilight life left in her soul, she summons spirits, guides that followed souls and ferried them across to life and gave them a command to destroy the inhabitants of this dungeon, excepting the members of her party.

As (or before) we settled to rest, Tante Lude searched the room, the corridor she'd discovered, and the room it led into to make sure there wasn't another secret door waiting to open upon them. Then she gratefully rested.

No benefits at all (HP, wildshape, attunement to the ring) from short rest? I assume from your post that Nyx would expect have some but they did not happen without an understanding why. Revised
Rejuvenated by the rest Nyx ponders what can be done to aid their chances of defeating the mad wizard that built the place and enjoys playing with their lives. With little else to be learned from the chariot room he wanders to the next room, with the pentagram.

"Only a jewel can tame the frog." may apply to these he states pointing towards the grun on the sarcophagus. He looks for any place that a gem, or gems, may be set to hopefully mitigate the effects of this trap. Perhaps the "two 1-inch-diameter crystal eyeballs—one dark blue and one vibrant purple" recovered previously or any other gemstones

Nyx don't see anything on the figurines of frog-like humanoids that would seem to be designed to hold a gem

though you may obviously try to balance a gem on a figurine's head or something, but there isn't anything suggesting a proper placement

Everyone - you could take time to do the paperwork of leveling up the PC later, but let me know when you are done. Meanwhile, let's continue the story. Would you describe your PC next action(s)?

Tante Lude follows Nyx to the pentagram room and watches the faery fly around. She keeps her ears open for the sound of movement though.
Dec 28, 2024 12:55 am
As Tink flies above the sarcophagus Nyx wanders around the edge of the room, searching it closely and looking for any symbols, runes, mechanisms, etc. He ponders the likely trap, sarcophagus, and means to mitigate its effects as he doubts it can be bypassed.
Perhaps placing the gem eyes in the skull will do something. Shall we try? He asks the others.

@badbaron please confirm you are targeting the creature you see now with your telekinetically shove and tell me the direction of your choice (toward or away from you)

NPC turns still waiting for player suggestions on course of actions
Dec 31, 2024 9:42 pm
I confirm that the telekinesis targets the enemy creature and, if I can move opposite the pentagram to an appropriate point, it will be a push away. If it is not a doable move and moving to a point where I can drag the creature toward me works instead, then that is the action. Either way, the main idea is to try to push it out of, or toward being out of, the pentagram and it's only a 5 foot shove so the key is where it is closest to a line, rather than where Lude ends up. If either is appropriate, it's more natural for her to shove away than to drag toward.

Cave Bear jaws are chattering in the air, but the paw manages to find the target. You can hear the hit.
Tante Lude keep trying to move the invisible enemy with no success, just as she fail to inflict any necrotic damage to the creature

What comes below is against combat rules and we should have rolled death saves and allowed players to cast healing magic, but I really want to "remove" the NPC from the story as it will be replace Ixion with new PC driven be new player.
Besides I rolled nat 1 on Ixion's attack.
