Chapter 1: Prisoners of the Drow

Nov 22, 2016 5:34 pm
Captured by the drow! You wouldn't wish this fate upon anyone. yet here you are—locked in a dark cave. The cold, heavy weight of metal tight around your throat and wrists. You are not alone. Other prisoners are trapped in here with you, in an underground outpost far from the light of the sun.

Your captors include a cruel drow priestess who calls herself Mistress llvara of House Mizzrym. Over the past several days, you've met her several times, robed in silken garments and flanked by two male drow. One of whom has a mass of scars along one side of his face and neck.

Mistress llvara likes to impress her will with scourge in hand and remind you that your life now belongs to her. "Accept your fate, learn to obey, and you may survive." Her words echo in your memory, even as you plot your escape.

You find yourselves in a slave pen. On one end of the naturally-hewn rock chamber sits a massive iron gate, locked under all circumstances save one: the times when you are removed under heavy guard to perform menial chores for the amusement of your cruel drow masters. All told, there are fifteen of you in the slave pens, though five of you are gone at any given point in time.

Rough iron collars, manacles, and a belt adorn your necks, wrists, and waist. Through heavy rings a short length of chain tethers your arms to your waist, leaving you enough movement to do your tasks but little else. Any possessions you had when you were captured have long since disappeared into the depths of the drow camp. All you have left is anything you’ve managed to secret away during your time here.

It has been several hours since your last serving of the thin mushroom broth they feed you, and the heavy clay chamber pots lined up along one wall are beginning to reek with several hours gathering of excrement. Several other prisoners are in the room with you, some sleeping, some sitting alone.

The roar of falling water can be heard through the door. You know from your previous rotations out on labor details that you are in a massive underground cavern, where a giant waterfall pours into a pool below. The entire cavern glows with a dim light at all times, disconcerting for those that are used to the sun.

The heavy gate clangs open and work team 3 is ushered into the slave pens, hands gripping their own, now empty, chamber pots. With a cold click, the gate closes behind them.

Dustin doesn't need to look up to realize the others are coming the clinking of their chains is enough to announce their presence.
If it was his groups turn to empty the chamber pots he moved to do so.

Yes, this. This will do nicely. while thinking about what he had managed to find.

Looking over to his work mates he inwardly winced at the orc. Turning to the Quaggoth royal, "Your Majesty, after you."
Nov 22, 2016 6:55 pm
The Quaggoth looks down at Dustin before speaking in flowing, urbane Elvish. Your deference to my role is proper, kinsman. Would that I could walk in the sun once more, and look upon the spires of Nelrindenvane in the High Forest once more. I will shake this vile polymorph and reclaim my crown! With an air of finality, Derendil walks across the room, causing several of the other prisoners to scatter to avoid his path.
Nov 22, 2016 7:44 pm
Dustin looks a bit confused but bows.

Well that was unexpected. Wait polymorph ?

"Yes, sorry that you must endure that affliction. It is double worse that we are prisoners to this lot."

Hmmm kinsmen maybe he is cursed well no reason not to play along I guess.

Dustin will follow and see what the accursed drow will make them endure this day.

He will wait for the deep gnomes to come along. "You guys live here below ground. Any chance your people might rescue you or make an attempt ?"
Nov 22, 2016 7:56 pm
Hah! This one may look like me, but we're not from the same family. Jimjar says, with a jerk of his head indicating Bildaweer. My people certainly would come rescue me, if they knew I was missing. Alas, I was taken when I was away from home. They don't even expect me back from my foray to the surface yet! Jimjar says with a chortle. No lad, I'm here until I can either make an escape. Possibly when the damned drow send their contingent from Menzoberranzan to take us to the trading block there.
Nov 22, 2016 8:14 pm
Fang stirs from where he was resting. Trading block? Will we be sold then?
Nov 22, 2016 8:25 pm
Jimjar looks over at the half-orc with a look of cocked-headed confusion. Exactly what did you think the drow did with their prisoners? Of course they'll want to be selling us off. With a shake of his head, he looks around the rest of the room. Not that all of us here will likely make the block. That one over there, I hear he's dangerous. Very dangerous, from the whispers. He says, nodding at the shackled drow sitting alone along one of the walls.
Nov 22, 2016 8:42 pm
Reizei maintains a stoic and inscrutable expression as he continues to watch the others. So far the Drow have mistaken him for a common elf. Little did they know he could slip these chains and step through that gate in a single motion. But he wouldn't last long alone.

No, he would stick with the plan. But which of these were worth the risk? Who among them had the strength of will and the martial skill to help him escape. He would get one chance. If he picked the wrong group, or if he made his move too early, all would be lost.

He was certain the half-Orc could be trusted and would fill a role. They had arrived at the same time and in the past few days Reizei had seen all he needed. But two would not be enough, so he would wait...and watch...and hope...
Nov 22, 2016 8:49 pm
Dustin groaned internally at the thought of being poked and proded on the slavers bloc.

His eyes followed Jimjar's look to the drow he mentioned.

Why is he in here ?
Nov 22, 2016 8:55 pm
They say he went crazy and slaughtered one of the other drow warriors. He's a nasty sort, doesn't often talk to anyone. Jimjar says quietly, eyes darting between the group and the drow.
Nov 22, 2016 9:01 pm
Dustin nods, "Must be something horrible for them to put one of their own in here. Still I suppose he knows the most out of all of us if someone could get him to talk."

"I know one thing I am not really one into enjoying wearing such jewelry." Dustin says rattling his manacle chains.
Nov 22, 2016 9:10 pm
Bildaweer whispers quietly to Jimjar and Dustin: I agree, we must make an escape. Better to live free than suffer at the hands of the drow. Hmm . . . what do you know of our captors Jimjar?
Nov 22, 2016 9:12 pm
Dustin nodded to Bildaweer and looked to Jimjar as the deep gnomes did seem to be in here longer then him.
Nov 22, 2016 9:58 pm
I don't know as much as I would like, to be honest with you. I know they have a force of about 20 drow here. At least one of them is another priestess - Asha, maybe? Jimjar says as his craggy face scrunches as if doing math in his head.

You all have met Ilvara, Shoor, and Jorlan, of course. Shoor and Jorlan are the two that are always with Ilvara. Nasty scars Jorlan got. Those happened right after I got here. Something like a tenday and a half, maybe? Again, that scrunched face that belies mental math creases his brow.

Oh, something else I've heard about but not seen, personally. Spiders and quaggoths. They've got more than a dozen mixed of those beasties. At this his voice drops, and his eyes furtively flick to the back of Derendil's massive frame.
Nov 22, 2016 10:03 pm
Dustin nods slowly, "Quite a large force, usually slaves out number their captors." Dustin counts the number of prisoners.
"Seems stealth not force if we are to get out of here. Surprising though none of those here must have magic or they would be free would they not ?"
Nov 22, 2016 10:07 pm
Not all magic lends itself to a quick escape. Fang casts a glance at the drow. What about you? You must be keen to leave. None will know better than you what's in store for us.

True I suppose, never dabbled in it myself but have seen some amazing things.
Nov 22, 2016 10:26 pm
Sarith looks up , red eyes piercing out from behind his straggly white hair. His lip curls into a sneer and he drops his gaze back to the ground between his feet. Magic. P'ah. Clearly you surface-dwelling scum know nothing of the ways of the drow.
______________________________________________________________

Jimjar glances around, making sure no guards are near to the gate before speaking lowly to the small group No one really knows, at least no one here in the room. All I can say is that the disfigurement seemed to cause him to fall from Mistress Ilvara's grace. She even took his toy away and gave it to Shoor! Some wand that shot sticky things out to help capture new slaves for the pipeline. Shhhh! Break apart now, we'll talk more later, if you're still alive. Jimjar says suddenly. He darts to the back of the cave. Moments later, a drow warrior walks up to the gate and peers through, assessing the masses.

You scum break it up. You should rest, your jobs on the morrow will be taxing enough. He says with a sneer before continuing on his way.

Anyone attempting to get further information out of Sarith will need to provide a Charisma check of some kind (either Intimidation or Persuasion, depending on your approach).

Having good heard the entire interaction without being noticed, Reizei came to the conclusion that this might just be the best group of coconspirators he would likely encounter down here. Action was needed, however he did not trust the Drow or his information. It was just as likely in Reizei's mind that he wa planted here to watch from the inside as it was that he was an actual prisoner. He'd continue to keep a vigilant eye on that one.

Under the waychful gaze of his captors nothing could be done. He would wait until they were in the move again. Labor has a way of masking other actions.

Over the two days that he has been a prisoner Dustin would have been curious about the mushroom and fishman and tried to see if they were able to understand him. Trying to find what their story is since he has never encountered such people.
Nov 23, 2016 3:23 pm
Bildaweer sits down next to Topsy and ask about the work we'll be doing tomorrow, when he thinks they'll take us to the slave markets, his background and his relation to Turvy.
Nov 23, 2016 3:47 pm
Work? Oh, the labor? Typically it's menial things. Preparing and serving food, washing dishes, cleaning clothes, moving water barrels. If you're lucky, that's all you'll have to do. She says in Undercommon, before pushing on. They haven't had a contingent since Turvy and I were brought here. Maybe a few days, maybe a few tendays. And Turvy? Turvy's my twin brother.

A bit unsurprised the fishman couldn't speak the languages he knows he just nods.
Then turning his attention to the mushroon, "Uhm thanks ?" Dustin takes the spoors and sees if they are edible.
Nov 23, 2016 6:14 pm
After seeing Dustin take the proffered spores, Sprout wiggles, casting a large cloud of the spores, covering Dustin and nearly all of the other denizens of the pens with a fine cloud of yellow dust.

Wonderful. Thanks for agreeing to being spored! Now that you've been dusted, for an hour or so we can communicate telepathically! Not only that, you can talk to OTHER people that way too! Isn't that awesome! Not like being trapped down here, that's for sure. Most people down here won't talk with me. Would you talk with me? A soft voice jabbers into your mind. Stool wiggles excitedly.
Nov 23, 2016 6:37 pm
At first Dustin almost falls over in surprise.

Sure, I meant to talk to you. I have never quite seen anyone like you. My Name is Dustin, do you have a name ? Dustin tried thinking at the Mushroom since this is the first time this has ever happened.
Yes it is a very amazing ability, I wonder ? He focuses back on the fishman, Hello again not sure you can understand me but this mushroom did something pretty awesome.

Dustin? That's a funny name! My name's Stool!

Shuushar sits bolt upright from where he had leaned himself against the wall. A minor squawk escapes from his fish-like lips.

Mushroom?! How are you speaking in my head? Are you some kind of demon!? A distinctly gurgly voice echoes through your mind.
Nov 23, 2016 6:53 pm
Hello Stool, well you have made a friend. I agree with you it's never fun to be in a cage. How did you end up here ?

Then to Shuushar, I am no demon, this mushroom it's spores seem to let us talk in our heads. Wait I can understand you now. Dustin waves, It's me. I am doing the mental talking but I couldn't do it without this amazing mushroom being. My name is Dustin.
OOC:
Aughhh suddenly want Stool as a familiar.
Nov 23, 2016 7:13 pm
That evil man captured me. He was trying to use me to talk to prisoners. He's not a good person. I just want to go home again. That's Neverlight Grove, so you know. If you want, I could guide you there, you could stay with us. I'm sure the elders would keep you safe! At least, I could, if we could get out of here. Stool "says" to you, the mental voice getting forlorn and sad at the very end.

Looking about the room, Shuushar sees Dustin waving his hand. I do not understand how it works. However, hearing a friendly voice is welcome. It is probably best that you not continue waving, however. There are some vile Drow in a tower overlooking the gate. They've taken shots into the slave pens before, when people have gotten unruly. It would be better if you were to just sit, and be calm. We don't know where this torment will lead.
Nov 23, 2016 7:27 pm
Sorry you were captured Stool, I plan on getting out of here. I don't know where anything is down here. So I guess I would need directions to this Neverlight Grove. Then, "Who is an evil man ? One of the Drow ?

Dustin lowered his hand.
My name is Dustin, yes the drow do seem to keep an eye on us. What things have you noticed and if you don't mind me asking what are you, and how did you end up a Prisoner here ?

I could definitely give you directions! What were you doing when you got captured? Why don't you have things on your legs like the bad people have? Drow, is that what the bad people are called? I guess....yes, the bad person is one of the drow, but he's different, he's not a free drow. He's a PRISONER! Stool launches into a barrage of questions, excited it would seem, for someone to finally speak with. His voice is tinged with a touch of desperation.

I am Kuo-toa, landwalker. There are tales and histories, rightly earned, of my kind going insane. I have sought to avoid this fate through long periods of introspection and soul-searching. I have finally achieved a level of enlightenment and calm. What has happened has happened, and what has yet to happen is undecided.

Fang, you can easily tell that Reizei is observing everything.
Nov 24, 2016 1:20 pm
Good because I would need directions. I was on the surface when I got caught. I have to admit I thought I was dead and never imagined I would end up down here. Things on my legs ? Dustin looks at his legs for a moment.

Drow prisoner, someone like him. Dustin thinks about the Drow in the cell with them.
Drow are the beings that have us locked up in here.

Then to Shuushar, Kuo-Toa, alright I will remember the name. You seem to have a very accepting philosophy, do you not wish to be free ?

Dustin will slowly move his hands using Theives Cant to see if anyone responds. A simple identify signal is given.

Nov 24, 2016 4:50 pm
Yeah! Things on your legs. Like the - drow - that captured us! They have some weird plant covering thing on their legs. But, like, in a pattern. Stool says, trying to be helpful.

It is not a matter of want, landwalker. It is a matter of being one with everything. Do no harm and allow the course of events to present themselves. Then, comes contemplation. I would not complain if I were to be released, but neither will I complain if I remain detained.
Nov 24, 2016 4:52 pm
OOC:
You get much the same look from the guards when you speak Orc and Giant at them that you do when you speak common: disinterest at best, disgust at the worst. Most of the guards that have stood watch thus far are not overly friendly or talkative with you.
Nov 24, 2016 5:00 pm
OOC:
Do I remember what the Drow look like ? Do I think Stool means Boots ? That reminds me how are we all dressed ?
I think you mean boots Stool. Something to keep their feet from harm.

Then to Shuushar, I have to admit that I am not so calm about our situation. Do you have a home Shuushar ? Do you live down here or were you taken from the surface like me ?
Nov 24, 2016 5:36 pm
OOC:
You definitely remember what the drow look like. You see them every few hours at the gate and they lead you to and from your work duties. Most are clothed in simple armor, if any. Silken clothes for some, heartier cloth for others.
Haha, you're funny Dustin! Not BOOTS, I know what BOOTS are! These aren't on their FEET, it's on their LEGS. Silly! Stool says, chuckling as much as a sentient mushroom can.

I do, in a manner. I have traveled the Darklake for many years. I have not been home in a very long time, but I do have a home.
Nov 24, 2016 5:44 pm
I don't quite know what you mean then Stool, how did it look can you send me a mental picture ?

Darklake alright, I haven't heard of it. Darklake is it a friendly place ?
OOC:
Are we in rags ?
Nov 24, 2016 6:00 pm
I don't know if I can send pictures, but I'll try! Stool says happily. Before too long you get a hazy image of a pair of legs wrapped in some kind of heavy cotton pants.

HAH, friendly. Not hardly friendly to landwalkers. Plus, most of my family are vile beings.
OOC:
Essentially, yes. You are all in barest of rags. What you are wearing on your legs could, maybe, pass for daisy duke style shorts. Males are not afforded tops, females have a top that comes to mid-stomach only.
Nov 24, 2016 6:19 pm
Ah yes pants, they took our pants.
Took our pants ! bastards. Ok Drow just moved up from mostly harmless.

It worked Stool you were able to send an image to me.

Plus, escaping needs plans, and plans need friends. I like friends. Dustin was the first one that wanted to talk to me. HE's nice to me!
Nov 24, 2016 7:48 pm
You can hear us ? Dustin wasn't quite sure how the mental speak worked but was surprised when Stool spoke to someone else.

Don't worry Stool, I will try and get you home if at all possible.

He then thought at the one Stool was mentally talking too, You wanna help get that drow to tell us where our pants and other things are, if they even bothered keeping them.
Nov 24, 2016 8:10 pm
I appreciate it Dustin!

'That' drow you refer to has no obligation to tell any of you surface scum anything. I'm imprisoned because of crimes against another drow, but a drow I remain. Talk of escape is dangerous if you don't know who all is listening. Perhaps you should better watch your mental tongue or watch who is able to listen. A vile voice creeps into all of your minds, full of both disgust and hatred.
Nov 24, 2016 8:22 pm
Uhm Stool, can everyone hear us ?

And HEY ! your people stole our clothes stuck us in a cage and made us do menial chores. Since your proud to be one of them why did you do something to another Drow ? If you do know where our things are you should let us know.

The nearest guard is well out of sight for you, unless you were to go up to the gate proper and look through from there. You only ever see a guard if they are picking up a work party, or dropping a work party off. Occasionally, one will stop by mid-shift to tell you to break it up.

To the best of your knowledge, the guards are totally unaware of the telepathic communication.

Friend Stool, I am indeed angry. Being locked in a cage makes me angry. Having someone attempt to take my dignity makes me angry.I throw a cool and level glance at Ront. Reizei throws a smirk at the half-Orc. "I would be angered at being called a half breed as well, friend."

The Eladrin repositions himself against the wall and settles into a slightly more comfortable position. With another quick glance around to make sure they aren't being overheard he adds, "Escape, of course, the big picture. It is the how and when we need to plan carefully. I would suggest we do two things, for the time being. First, let us observe and gather information. Nothing is too trivial or insignificant. Second, me must not hesitate when the right moment presents itself. And we must act as one."

He lets out a heavy breath as though the length of his communication had taken a physical toll. "I suggest we are not ready for that moment. We must work together and do all we can to become ready when that moment presents itself."

You may have a point surface scum. In any event, I'm in here because of a crime I don't remember committing, but must have, otherwise I wouldn't be put in here. I may have been framed, by one of the other drow. As for your things, I can guess, but in case you hadn't noticed, I've been in this pit since you arrived. Chances are, Mistress has your things collected in her chambers.

Alright, where would her chambers be. If you can't remember perhaps you were framed. I know there was a change in status among the drow warriors recently when one was wounded. A map even one traced in dust would work.
Nov 25, 2016 6:39 pm
Topsy, we must leave this place. Some of us are preparing to escape. Are you with us? Do you have anything, any item or information or ability you can assist us with?
Nov 25, 2016 9:11 pm
alright lads. cemos utters in a hushed tone. I have been here for several days now and I have managed to scrap together this silk rope. cemos shows his cell mates the 5' rope. now my plan was to wait until one of the guards opened the gate to take us to our next work detail and use it to choke the life out of him but if any one has a better idea nows the time to say it.
Nov 25, 2016 9:12 pm

Nov 25, 2016 9:27 pm

Nov 25, 2016 9:42 pm
This little guy is named Stool, and as I understand it he lets people around him talk in their heads not only with him but with everyone else around him. So it is less conspicous He thinks to Cemos.

As for your rope thats a good thought, perhaps if it is broken in half it might make two passable slings, with proper stones. Our other weapon while disgusting may be surprising enough to throw our captors off their game. He looks to one of the chamber pots.
Nov 25, 2016 9:43 pm
I don't know precisely where her chambers are. I was never that privileged. But she lives in the big spire, out over the webs. Sarith says telepathically, his mental voice sounding mildly defeated.

Topsy looks at Bildaweer and shies away. Shhhhhh. Don't let them hear you talk like that! It's a good way to get shot! She says as she runs off to Turvy's side, leaving you alone.

Cemos utterly confounded by the unknown voice in his head.what the.... are you reading my thoughts? cemos thinks aloud.look i don't know how this is possible but I've been here for 6 days and I have had about all I can handle. I don't want to be sold off as some lowly slave so if your willing let's try and get one of the guards to come in the cell so we can jump them.

Yes just think what you want to say. We will hear in our heads. Stool we dont have the amazing ability you have to let us do this. Thank you for helping all of us. Dustin nods at Sarith's words it made sense from what he saw everyone kissed their Priestess butt among the drow.

He nodded at the mental picture sharing it with the others.
Nov 25, 2016 9:50 pm
You try that dwarf, and see how it goes for you. They keep the gate covered by crossbow from the spire across the way. Plus, you'd have to try getting them into the cell, which they don't do. Ever. Sarith sneers into your minds.
Nov 25, 2016 9:53 pm
I think someone should try to cause a Ruckus, like start a fight with another cell mate or even feign death. Something to get that guard to open the door. If it's just the one we can jump him and tie him up.
Nov 25, 2016 9:55 pm
Cemos glances in the direction of the guard tower.well then I guess we will have to wait till we go on our next work detail.
Nov 25, 2016 9:57 pm
You just don't get it, do you dwarf? If you get into a fight, they will just let you fight. If you kill another inmate, they will let the corpse sit there until they come for the next work party. Then, they will bring the brunt of their force to take you to your duty while the body is disposed of. They don't care if you die in a fight, because slaves that fight aren't worth the money they'd get for 'em. If you intend on getting out of here, straight force isn't it. Sarith says, slightly less sneery than before, but still cold.
Nov 25, 2016 9:57 pm
Yes, we certainly need a distraction. I respect your bravery though. He thinks to Cemos.

Are there anything they would react too, like words in your tongue ? He thinks to Sarith.

Do any of you have magic, and if you do why haven't you used it ?

@Dustin, no you haven't noticed anything of that nature. The typical day is that they will come to the gate and announce a work party to come to the gate. When the party is assembled, they will open the gate (which opens in) and allow that work party out. During these times, the observing guards from the spire will come down and have their crossbows ready to shoot any runners. You aren't in individual cages (for clarity). You are in a single large chamber with a single gate.
Time Check: It has been roughly 15 minutes since the work party re-entered the slave pen.

You go out once per day for about 7 hours. There is usually an hour or so between one party returning and another party being called out. Given that party 2 just returned (if I remember correctly), party 3 will be the next to go out. There are typically three guards when the gates are opened, but they are fully armed/armored. You are all chained to a long lead chain held by a quaggoth when you leave.
Nov 25, 2016 11:34 pm
OOC:
and for those of us not familiar with a quaggoth. What exactly is it. I am assuming I have seen it several times over the past couple of days. Also have I noticed that the cage is opened with a key or something kind of mechanism?

What you all know is that they are large and hunched over, and very strong. They seem to do whatever the drow tell them to do. You have seen them go into a murderous rampage at perceived slights. More than that, you'd need to throw a Nature skill check to know. The cage is opened with a key. It appears that all the guards have a key on them attached to their belts by a chain.
Nov 25, 2016 11:47 pm

Bildaweer sees the rope and hears the talk of causing a distraction. He walks over and mentions that he has a small jewel in his pocket. What about a bribe? Maybe approaching the scarred drow? He might be a vengeful fellow. Maybe we can convince him to do something for us to get back at the other?
Nov 26, 2016 1:04 am
A guard? Not hardly. A warrior among the drow, certainly. But I was not a prison guard, at least not for many years now. I was a runner and acquisition specialist. Sarith says, his tone getting continually more cowed with each interaction with all of you.
Nov 26, 2016 2:59 am
sarith do you think you would be able to control those massive beasts they hook our chains to?would it follow your commands?
Nov 26, 2016 4:20 am
Possibly. Though I doubt it. They do not leave me alone with the quaggoths. They apparently fear the idea you have. I will say, the idea has crossed my mind.
Nov 26, 2016 4:28 am
we might not have a choice. Sarith would you be willing to try and command the beast to turn on the guards with the crossbows? At the very least have it charge toward them. Just to give us enough time to subdue the guard that opens the gate.
Nov 26, 2016 4:35 am
The beast will not obey if there are armed drow nearby. The best bet for a foolish maneuver like that would be after the work party is split during their shift and the guard's attention is elsewhere.
Nov 26, 2016 1:27 pm
Ah My name is Dustin. As to the guard three would not be too hard if we were all armed. Were not though and those crossbows give them an additional advantage. Sarith, is there an armory someplace where weapons are stored ?

I am trying to come up with something. But it hinges on getting to that tower they all watch us from.
Nov 26, 2016 2:39 pm
OOC:
I am assuming that I have been on at least a few work parties by now. When we are working are there more guards watching us, what kind of weapons do they have and does the beast stay with the work party like a guard.
Nov 26, 2016 2:58 pm
OOC:
Regarding work parties: the number of guards depends on the activity. Some labors you will have only a quaggoth guarding you. Other actions (like forcing you guys to move and stack rocks as a game that they bet on) there will be a large number of guards, some on duty some not.

Most of the guards you have seen have chain shirts, short swords, and hand crossbows. There are a handful of scrappier looking warriors that most of the other male drow tend to defer to. They wear studded leather and have the same short sword and hand crossbow as the others, but they boast a shield in addition to their armor.

The quaggoths routinely stay on as a guard. If any of you tried speaking to one (other than the one in captivity with you), they respond with hateful roars and a half-hearted swing at you.
Nov 26, 2016 3:07 pm
Dustin tries to see how many guards seem to be watching them at the moment and if they are vigilantly watching or if it seems half hearted.
Nov 26, 2016 4:31 pm
alright dustin what are you thinking?the way I see it the only option we have is to wait till we head out on work detail and hope that we get to where we are going and make our move then. The guards don't worry me as much as the beast does and all I have is this rope.
Nov 26, 2016 4:39 pm
We could do that, but if we do that then the others back in the cell may not get a chance at freedom. If we got out of these manacles then at least we would have chain weapons or maybe fake being bound to surprise the guard. Those chamber pots they have us empty could be thrown or dumped over the heads of the guard. At the least it would be a distraction. We may just need more time, but I don't know how much time we have. Opportunities may present themselves.
Nov 26, 2016 4:43 pm
alright then, I'll wait for you to make a move and I'll have your back. You just let me know what you need me to do and I'll see it done.
Nov 26, 2016 5:04 pm
Thank you friend, we need to be prepared to move as one. Does anyone else have any resources ? I don't have all the answers these drow seem to have a very well oiled operation. Whatever we do it needs to be fast and decisive. We can't afford to let the guards warn the others.
Nov 26, 2016 5:17 pm

Stool is too large to fit between the bars. He's about the size of a 5 year old or 6 year old human. The bars are relatively narrow, enough that it's unlikely anything other than little creatures could fit (cats, small dogs, rats, etc).

My thoughts are to bribe the scarred drow. I suspect that his Mistress punished him and favors the other guard. We might be able to bribe him to get back at other male drow to regain Ilvaras favor. An escape by slaves may be just thing to entice him with along with the gem. We can use a bit of rope to tie and gag the other. But, we need more information about them.

Nov 26, 2016 6:41 pm
At the mental note, Derendil sits up, if somewhat groggily (he's apparently fallen asleep while you've been speaking).

MY BODY?! THIS CURSE?! Derendil, up to this point quiet, now rises to his full height and yells a bestial roar. The links of his chain are taut, yanking against his waist.
Nov 26, 2016 6:43 pm
Dustin winces and his eyes look to the guards as the roar comes out from Derendil.
Nov 26, 2016 6:59 pm
At Derendil's rage, one of the guards in the tower opposite perks up a little bit, looking down at the gate. A few hand signals pass and in a matter of a minute or two, three drow are standing at your gate: Jorlan (the scarred one), and two that you've seen during your various work party trips, but you've not learned their names.

All of you there! Break it up. I won't have you causing havoc this close to duty time! Jorlan sneers at you through the gate. He waves the other guards off and takes a long look at the people in the pen before heading off himself.

That's why I hesitated to respond. How does it work in this game Drama?
Nov 27, 2016 1:32 pm

I had to go back and re-read the entry. Per RAW, you are absolutely correct, it's a means of injecting a second meaning into an otherwise normal conversation AS WELL AS a "hobo" code of symbols you can leave on houses and such. I think I'm going to hold to that as a standard rule. However, as the game goes on, two of you conversant in the Cant would be able to develop very limited hand signals to coordinate with the Cant. If you want Dustin, you can retcon your hand signal to a typical Thieve's Cant vocalization for identify.

Let's gather information on our work duty because once out of our chains and pen we still have to make our escape beyond the gate. Currently, all prisoners are in the slave pen. Typically you will all be present in the pen for 1 hour, then 1/3 of you go out on detail for 7 hours, then back together for an hour, out for 7 so on and so forth around the clock. There is no designated sleeping time that you can tell. You sleep when you are tired and go on duty when called. That's about it.
Nov 28, 2016 1:15 pm
Ahhh Bildaweer, being a wizard, what that must be like. Though I must warn you even though the Drow appear different they are part of the elven family and so most likely immune to magical sleep and resistant to charms. Though I think that could very well effect the Quaggoth. Mage hand what can that do ?

Derendil, Ront, and Jimjar get up, chamberpots in hand and make their way to the cage. When they get to the door, the guard looks back at Dustin and Bildaweer.

Are you coming, or shall we just shoot you where you stand? Again, the haughty voice carries through the room.

Question asked in note that is relevant detail for all of you: Quaggoths have no visible keys and typically only wear a loincloth. You know they are their loincloths having all done at least one rotation in the outpost laundry. They are disgusting. They've not heard of Charmin in the Underdark, clearly.

************Mystical Magical Handwavy Goodness Happens************

The cold iron bars of the slave pen door slam shut behind the returning work party. Bildaweer, Dustin, Jimjar, and Derendil walk in, empty chamber pots in hand. Jorlan, the scarred guard locks the heavy lock before staring at the amassed prisoners.

As much as it may pain me, surface scum, I do have to feed you. I will be back with your food shortly. Don't kill one another while I'm gone. He says, turning from the door. In a glimpse you see his twisted and scarred right hand, slipped out of its normal home in his pocket.

The time has passed in drudgery and boredom. Those of you that rested in the pens, nothing of note happened since "the outburst". Laborers, you cleaned the barracks until your hands were raw.

For well done roleplay and story progression efforts, everyone has one point of inspiration.

For inspiration, I will be deviating from standard RAW and allow you to store up to two inspiration points at any given point in time. However, the second point will fade away if not used within 24 hours of game time.

For those that are new to the system, in 5e, standard inspiration allows you to make any d20 roll at advantage. This means you can roll 2 d20s, and take the best result as you choose. In terms of how this works in PbP, please make your advantaged rolls as follows:
Quote:

Punch the Guard's Face Attack! - 1d20+2
Punch the Guard's Face Attack (Advantage)! - 1d20+2

Insight on the drow with the scars - (1d20+5)

(12) + 5 = 17

Dec 1, 2016 3:11 pm
You believe that he is very self-conscious about his scarring and that they have caused him much distress. He would prefer not to see them.

Stool waddles over to you and Bildaweer and then makes as if he is jabbing his head near the back of the cave.
OOC:
In terms of personality traits, you can roll on the tables for Charlatan in the book and play to that, or we can homebrew some stuff that fits for you. Personality wise, you seem outgoing and talkative. You like to find out how people tick. Stuff like that, yes?
Dec 1, 2016 3:24 pm
Dustin follows Stool to the back of the cave.

Thanks Stool, I appreciate it. Bildaweer, first I want to apologize. Your idea about a bribe might carry some weight. I guess I am just being overly cautious. Let's show the others what we found and get out of these chains. I don't want to end up like Ront.
OOC:
Yes he is ending up being a lot nicer and social then I thought he would.

Cemos makes his way over to dustin and bildaweer he give fang the nod to come over. Having dustin back his lockpicks he says in a hushed tone. I am glade you have returned and it looks like our situation might be worse then I thought. I have the ability to reach out with my spirit and sence things, and there is not only a great evil in this place but also there is desecrated ground very near by used for some nefarious act no doubt. And our Lady dwarf friend here has nightmares of some sort. Talking about tentacles and buzzing.

We will have to approach the scarred one very carefully. We need to find out exactly how and why he was scarred. Hmm . . . well there seems to be three ways out. If we go to the north which seems to be the easiest, we'll be within sight of the guard tower outside. There's a guard also just out of sight to the right. He bears the gate key on a mithral chain. Mithral is very hard and unlikely to break with what we got on hand.

When we were outside the gate, a quaggoth held a long main chain and guards took small chains connected to main one which secured to back of our waists.

Ront was killed. A drow shoved an arrow into eye and pushed him off ledge into a web below, three spiders cocooned him for a later meal. Once we we started working, the drow guards left and we were watched by a quaggoth.

We noticed an escape route to the south and one to the west. The western escape can be accessed by a cage lift although two quaggoths stand guard.
OOC:
Just for clarification - on the map the escape routes are areas 1 and 13 and then the far western tunnel.

**TIMING NOTE** At this point, waiting for Fang to post up about his activity in the pen before your dinner shows up.
Dec 1, 2016 4:41 pm
Dustin thanks Cemos taking the picks back.

I don't know what to think about those dreams. They do not sound pleasant. Dustin nodded sadly when Bildaweer spoke of Ront's death. In the end he fought and lost his eye in battle, I suppose in that way he pleased his peoples god.

He looked to Eldrith with a brief nod to acknowledge her.

The scared drow feels guilt and embarrassment over his wounds. I think they make him feel like he is less of a warrior, or cost him more then just status among his own. We did find some things which might help us out. I don't know what is in this bottle, we also found this paper and a bolt.

Anyone can make a Medicine or Nature check to try identifying what's in the bottle. Judging on where you found it and the writing, you think it was a male guard (since all the guards are male).

Fang, no, you don't have material components (unless you've scrounged them here, I'm willing to see if you have. let me know the components). You also don't have your focus (which typically allows you to ignore cost-less material components).

OOC:
How do I handle trying to unmanacle several people.
Dec 1, 2016 7:21 pm
Your first step is going to be to get your wrists free. I'll end up wanting 2 disadvantaged sleight of hand checks. It will take you a period of about fifteen to twenty minutes to accomplish. Once your arms are free, it will be a standard sleight of hand check and about five minutes of work per other person you do (longer than normal picking times because you are using an improvised pick). You estimate Jorlan has been gone for about 10 minutes already, and is likely to be back w/in 5 minutes with dinner.
OOC:
Running off to a meeting. Will post up about Jimjar and the dinner arrival when I'm done.
Dec 1, 2016 7:31 pm
OOC:
Ok thanks I will hold off then with Jorlan coming back so soon don't want to be mid picking and found out.
Dec 1, 2016 8:16 pm
I think it's worth tryin to convince the prince over there to command the quaggoths if fangs charm fails. Also we should take inventory of our supplies after the guard drops off our dinner. The only thing I have is the 5' silk rope. We can keep it intact or cut it up to use to choke people with.and did anyone get injured on the last work party?

Who's in Jimjar's head?! the deep gnome's mental voice cries out. He sees all of you, he curls his lip a bit. Whether grinning for mirth or evil, you don't know. I know a fair bit about locks, oh yes. What do you need to know surfacer? He thinks at you with an eyebrow waggle.

Not more than a few minutes later, you see Jorlan at the cage door with a cart full of bowls.

As the prisoners begin to line up, he passes each bowl through the small slot in the middle of the door.

Remember scum, those are my bowls. You break them, the spiders eat. You don't return them, the spiders eat. You sneer at me ugly, the spiders eat. Go eat your food. You have ten minutes. He says with a sneer as your compatriots all make their way through.

also don't know if I said this earlier but the desecrated ground is located to the south, most likely the other possible exit but I would prefer to stay away from the desecrated ground. If not then cemos slams the bowl down and hands it back to the guard and says thank you to him.

When he is done speaking with Jorlan he will move back to where Stool and the others are.

He divulges what Jorlan said and adds that it does fit with everything he has seen or heard so far. I know we can survive the drop to the water not sure if there are creatures in the water too far to see anything. I suggest a small group for storming the tower in case this is a trick. I will go since it might be our necks on the line. Can throw down things from the armory to someone below and if it is like the other rooms whoever is below can open those foot lockers. We will need to help arm and armor each other. We have four hours so let's see your manacles.

What Jorlan and Dustin were speaking about:
It is true what you speak. More than you know. If I could give you a means to escape from here, would you take it? He says very quietly, only loud enough that you can barely hear it over the clank of the bowl.

There are a few things you need to know, then. First, the guard tower across from the slave pens. If you go to the tower, and climb up in the room, there is the guard's armory there. For sure you'd find weapons, maybe some of your things. Second, you can pretty safely make the jump from there to the webs, and end up close enough to get into the water without having the spiders get you. From there you are on your own. If you are serious about this, I will leave the gate unlocked and ensure the guards are distracted during the change. You'll have to be fast though. You'll only have about 10 minutes after I unlock the gate to get to the armory. Not my skin if you choose to stick around after that. he says, glancing around furtively.

It would have to be at the next guard change, in about 4 hours. It's typically in the middle of a work shift. Depending on what I can do, I may be able to ensure that all of you are here in the slave pens, instead of out on a detail.

Rolling rolling

Over the course of the hour or so that you all have after the dinner period is through before the next work party is supposed to be picked up, Jimjar and Dustin work diligently, freeing all of your wrists from their manacles. Using a bit of creativity, you look at the sleeping form of Reizei, who has yet to stir. You find a little piece of rope sticking out above the metal waistpiece of his bindings. Tugging on it, you reveal a 5' length of silk rope he had kept hidden on his person. He doesn't awaken at the ministrations about his person. Topsy and Turvy very quickly work to pull the rope to pieces, using thin strands of spider silk to retie your manacles making it appear that you are all still bound, when in reality, a harsh tug would cause them to fall loose.

Feel free to continue RPing your activities during the dinner hour. I'll pick up story progression again once you've all 'eaten'.

so if I understand this correctly, we are going to wait till the dinner hour is over and the scared guard will leave and the gate will be unlocked and from there will will split into teams of 2. One will make its way to the guard tower and the other will get the footlockers. After that we will descend to the spider Web below and make our escape from there?
Dec 2, 2016 3:56 am
Sounds like a workable plan. Who goes where?
Dec 2, 2016 4:02 am
If you are all going to take this offer, which I'm still not sure I'd trust this dark dwelling excuse for an elf, can I come along? While many of these other folks are dark dwellers in their own right, no one deserves slavery. Plus, I want my hammer back. That high priestess of theirs took my beloved hammer and has it locked up in her chambers. I saw it when they sent me to bring her dinner once. Eldreth thinks at you, forcefully.
Dec 2, 2016 3:28 pm
all that want to make their escape from this place are welcome to do so and the more help we have in this endeavor the better are our chances of success.
Dec 2, 2016 4:31 pm
I agree all who wish freedom have it open to them. Jorlan said four hours so we wait for him to open the cell gate. The tower they watch us from across the way. I say one team head to that armory and throw things down to the first level. If things are safe we wave the others across the bridge into the tower. In the tower they probably have sleeping quarters like the places we cleaned. If they do check the foot lockers. We can always throw the sleeping mats unto the web so that we dont get stuck on the webs it will give us something to jump off of. Your hammer Eldrith might be in that wacko priestess room if we try to go for that, we will need another team a more silent stealthy one. Also there are a whole lot of us and we will need food and clean water.
Dec 2, 2016 7:19 pm
agreed. I volunteer myself to take on the guard tower, another fighter and perhaps a spellslinger would be greatly appreciated in that fight.
Dec 2, 2016 7:23 pm
As a side note, you all remember that you were unable to see the guards during their shift change. You believe the change in guard happens somewhere NOT at the guard tower. Typically it's only a minute or two that this takes, with one pair leaving the station before the next arrive. Perhaps they believe that their bars and gates and scary spiders are enough deterrence to prevent you escaping....Posting up just for planning's sake.
Dec 2, 2016 7:28 pm
OOC:
Roger that, I thought the change in guard would take place at the tower but having a possibility of an empty tower might be nice.
Dec 2, 2016 7:32 pm
Yeah, I saw you guys heading down that road. I want to make sure you all have an understanding of how the change happens that you've observed so far so you can plan. You don't know the manner of "distraction" that Jorlan is going to cause, but it seems like it'll give you a few minutes to get everyone over to the tower and you can decide from there how you want to go about moving around. You'll be able to fit all of you in there, if a bit cramped. Remember that until you do something to get some weapons, you're pretty underarmed to be heading out into the compound. :)

It's been nearly 2 hours since you heard about the option to escape. Stool has kept you all spored as you seemed to all be talking and planning. Waiting on Bildaweer/wpw1856 to post regarding the plan before Jorlan returns. :) The other NPCs have not approached you, and Stool ensured that they weren't spored. If you want to coordinate with any of them, let me know.
Dec 3, 2016 7:59 pm
Thank You. I think we should discuss things with the others after all they are going to see all the activity going on. Dustin will try to see what team everyone wants to be on or what ideas his fellow prisoners have.
Dec 3, 2016 8:31 pm
Buppido
When you approach the derro man, his whiskers twitch into a smile. Escaping! Absolutely! Count me in to assault whichever area is most fortified. Put a sword in my hand and I'll see them fall in battle for the glory of Diinkarazan!
Derendil
The massive quaggoth replies mentally in a cultured voice. Yes, I will gladly help you escape. Then I can finally return to Nelrindenvane! Terrestor will pay for his arrogance in turning me into this vile polymorph.
Eldreth
As if you even need to ask. Arm me and set me against them. The dwarf's anger is evident at her incarceration. She rubs at the edge of the manacles, still not happy to have put back in them, even if only with strings.
Jimjar
Ahhh yes, what are the odds we win you think?
Sarith
Ahhh yes. Freedom. But why do you trust me, I thought I was the 'bad man' and a 'vile dark dwelling scum'? Either way, once we are shot of here, I have no reason to stay with you. I may as well take my freedom instead of being a sacrifice to Lolth.
Shuushar
I will not stand in your way, but neither will I take up arms. So long as I don't have to hurt anyone, I am with you.
Topsy & Turvy
Yes! Please get us out of here, and away from that nutter! Topsy says quickly, pointing at Jimjar across the room.
Dec 3, 2016 8:42 pm
Dustin was surprised by some of the responses but mostly pleased. If Sarith wouldn't cry out it would be better. To the others.

Were going to have three teams. The first objective is to take the tower across from our prison. That is something we can all do and if we haven't been decieved everyone should find some weapons there to arm themselves. Then two other teams will make their way to the cafeteria since we will need food and clean water, the other will try to find the items that were taken from us. Your majesty Derendil I think your strength would be very useful in helping with the food. Any who are quiet and quick can join on the effort in the other tower. Shuushar we wont need you to fight but we will need your help in the water below. Can we count on you to help those having a hard time swimming ? Jim Jar as for odds hmmm probably stacked against us but we have a hell of a good reason for fighting with every ounce we have. So five to one I would say.

Eldrith we could use a warrior on our attempt to get your hammer so why don't you come with my team.

Well he mentioned a distraction so here's to hoping the tower has none or only a few guard. I doubt he will do more then that for us. You might have been right about him doing this as some kind of revenge but I am sure he doesn't want to trade places with Sarith.

Seems we wouldn't want to linger about after escaping and it would be awful to have one team caught, outnumbered and outmatched. Perhaps splitting everyone up should hinge on what we find in the guard tower?

Mystical Magical Handwavy Time Passage

As you all sit in the slave pen, all of you somewhat twitchy with anticipation, you've done your best to appear normal. No guards have come to the door, and no guards have left the tower. As you sit, Jorlan walks up to the gate, looking around himself slightly. Hey all of you! Settle down in there! You go ahead and fight like that, we'll just let you go ahead and die! He yells out, masking the sound of him sticking his key in the lock and turning the heavy bolt. He holds a finger up in the middle of his chest, and he spins and runs up the ramp to the guard tower. You see him making some small motions and then pointing back over at the general area of the barracks. The two guards look at one another and one runs off. The other heads into the tower.

A moment passes and Jorlan follows him. Less than 30 seconds later, he emerges alone, wiping something on his leg. A single arm waves, and he's down the ramp, headed toward the rest of the outpost.
Dec 4, 2016 12:28 am
I don't trust him, but this may be our only chance. Go now! I run out the gate toward the tower.

Upon entering the tower, the first that catches you eye is a dead drow. His throat slit from ear to ear, dark blood spreading across the stone floor. His eyes are glassy and unfocused. At the back of the room is a ladder leading up. There are two desks in the room (tables really, no drawers) along with two chairs. A half-finished game of cards is scattered over one of the desks.

6 shortswords
10 daggers
6 bags of caltrops (20 per bag)

The others outfit themselves as follows:

Buppido
Takes a suit of studded leather and a short sword.
Derendil
Opts to take no armor or weapons. States The only proper weapon for an elvish prince is a longbow or longsword. Nothing else will do!
Eldreth
Takes a suit of chain, a shield, and a short sword.
Jimjar
Takes a suit of studded leather, a short sword, and a dagger.
Sarith
Takes a suit of studded leather, a shield and a short sword.
Shuushar
Takes no armaments.
Topsy & Turvy
Each takes a dagger and a hand crossbow.
Dec 4, 2016 6:13 pm
The next thing I will need you guys to do is give me a final plan: Split up into three teams (stay here, get food, and hit the mistress's room) or stay as one group. Provide me either the team lists OR your first group target. The NPCs pretty much agree to do whatever you suggest as you brokered the deal that got them out of the pen. I will also assume that you use the keys to remove your belts/shackles. If you are wanting to leave them on, let me know.
Dec 4, 2016 6:18 pm
"Even if you don't need it, take the rest of this stuff we, won't be getting the chance again for this. We can sell what we can't use. Especially the ammo for the crossbows. Jim Jar grab some caltrops those might be handy. Maybe we should cut the bridge to this tower. Keep everyone from that side from easily reaching us." Dustin will move out to try to get to the temple.

Poisoning some bolts.

Threat-wise, you believe it to be equal threat regardless of which area you assault. The advantage you currently have is that they are wholly unaware (as yet) that you've broken out. You expect that the next set of guards will return for their duty (usually sitting here in the room) in a minute or so. If they check the wide open gate of the slave pen, they will know you are out. If they find you in the guard room, they will know you are out. Tick tock. :D
Dec 4, 2016 6:33 pm
"Let's cut the bridge to here from the pen we were in or at least start on that. I would like whoever is combat or spell capable to come along for our next objective. Maybe food should be the priority, we have enough people to gather food."

Dustin looks to see if there is any drow activity about.

"Would still like to try and get peoples things back. Maybe even put down some of them."
Dec 4, 2016 6:37 pm
Topsy and Turvy will set about that action if you ask them. It will leave you with a single means of entry to this tower, the bridge that runs up by the waterfall to the massive stalactite. Eldreth informs you that the giant stalactite is where the mistress keeps her chambers as well as the temple.
Dec 4, 2016 6:41 pm
OOC:
How many guards? Perhaps we should simply ambush them when they arrive?
Dec 4, 2016 6:41 pm
"Who is with me ? I am heading for the temple, the waterfalls mist and sound should help hide us. Have those crossbows ready."

"Topsy, Turvy if you see drow headed this way from the other direction you might have to cut that bridge too. Jim Jar, Cemos, Fang, Eldrith, Bildaweer how about we try the temple the others gather food. If your not going to fight or gather food you might want to lower people down on the ropes. Tie them securely and lower them quickly."
Dec 4, 2016 6:42 pm
Historically there've been 2 guards on duty here. Sometimes a stronger drow with a regular one, sometimes double regular drow. Ambush is an option if you can get everyone into the armory and quiet.
Dec 4, 2016 6:52 pm
Dustin will have Topsy and Turvy hold off on cutting the bridge just yet. If they already started he will have them stop.
"We might be able to ambush the new guard when it shows. If we are to try this everyone but those who are going to fight should head up in the armory and get real quiet."
OOC:
Thanks didnt know how many guard watched us.
Dec 4, 2016 7:02 pm
Before moving, Stool shudders, covering you all with his telepathic spores. Everyone looks about, seeming a bit scared about the idea of an ambush, but scamper up the ladder they do. With all the gear off the racks, it's a matter of a few seconds to get everything pushed clear and everyone seated.

Hopefully this helps friends! We can be quiet and still talk!
Dec 4, 2016 7:12 pm
Good idea Stool. Alright let's put these crossbows to good use.
He passed around the poison to the others to use on their bolts.

They have to come across a bridge so we need to cover the bridges. Even so Dustin makes sure Stool is as hidden as can be and has the cover of the place.

Do you want to let them reach here before the ambush ? Or use the crossbow bolts ?
OOC:
Does the armory have a view of the bridges ?

The poison is enough to cover 1 case of bolts. You have 20 poisoned bolts. The armory has no view of anything. The only visibility is the bridge and the slave pen door from the door of the guard post. Anything that happens in the tower is largely invisible to those outside.

Dec 5, 2016 2:33 pm
When the first guard turns and sees the overturned tables, he opens his mouth to shout a warning. At that moment, Dustin pops up over the table and buries a crossbow bolt into the shoulder of the first guard. His hand flies to the shaft sticking out from his chest, a cry building in his throat. The guard behind him drops a hand to his shortsword as an ensorceled vine of thorns wraps itself around his throat, cutting off sound, it's spiky surface digging deep into his flesh. With a snarl of agression, Fang yanks on the whip in his hand, pulling the back guard up into his compatriot. As they fumble about in their collission, out pokes Bildaweer, glowing bolts of energy springing from his fingers. The three missiles streak across the small room unerringly. One, two, three bolts find their homes in the center of his chest. The power of the missiles, coupled with the force of Fang's pull, send the shield-wielding drow to his knees in a clatter. As he hits the ground, the bonds of his shield break, causing the heavy wooden barricade to fall from his leather-bedecked arm. Cemos steps forward, and aims for the first guard. Unfortunately, the havoc caused by Fang's whip attack cause the guard to stumble just out of range of the sword swing.

As they try to get their footing, Dustin sends another bolt from his crossbow. It careens off-course, embedding itself in the wall. Fang pulls his arm back and snaps out a second stroke of the whip toward the second guard. Just barely making contact, the vines slice at his throat, opening up more small wounds on the blueish gray flesh. Cemos takes advantage of the distraction and thrusts his sword forward, sliding it all the way to the hilt in the chest of the first drow. The light fades from the guard's eyes as his cry dies in a gurgle. He slops to the floor, blood pulsing from the gaping chest wound. His intended target down, the deep gnome slings three bolts of energy at the remaining guard, all three slamming into the drow's body, bringing a shriek of pain from his lips.

He stands and draws his shortsword. Setting sights on the nearest threat, he makes two swings at Cemos. His first swing is so wild, it ends up flashing past his target and hitting his leg instead, slicing through the tendons of his knee.

Can Act:
Bildaweer, Cemos, Dustin, Fang

Abandoning his ever-successful thorn whip in favor of the heavier scimitar, Fang steps close and slashes out. The crafty drow laughs at you, even as blood pours from his wounds, and weaves backwards out of the way of your cut. As he dodges, a stream of ice cold blue energy lances out from Bildaweer, missing the guard's shoulder by a fair margin. Unfortunately for him, as he weaves away from the scimitar, Cemos' shortsword slices deeply across his unprotected arm. He grimaces at the cut and starts turning to face the armored threat in front of him. As he turns, Dustin spies a rare opportunity: a target with an exposed throat. Setting his sights on that little notch at the base of the drow's throat, he triggers the crossbow. The bolt springs free, sailing through the melee and finishing itself in the exposed skin, buried to the fletching. The drow's fingers scrabble at his neck as a gout of viscera leaps from the wound. He looks at all of you and utters a simple No, this cannot be. You are so weak, scu... and with his final breath he crumples to the ground, a motionless heap.

Combat Over

Nah, they unfortunately removed flanking in 5e (much to my chagrin). The only real vestige of it left is the rogue sneak attack blurb that allows you to deal sneak damage when the enemy is engaged in melee with someone else (which ultimately, is better than flanking was in that regard, though the lack of +2 sucks)
Dec 5, 2016 5:14 pm
Dustin high fives Stool and heads over to Cemos, Pointy eared bastard ? really ? but Dustin has a big smile.

Well, we have more armor and weapons for those who have nothing. Dustin will see what they have.

As the drow falls to the floor, you feel warm, almost as if you had downed a carafe of hot chocolate after spending hours in the cold. As your arms flex and your mind races with probable cause, you realize something: you feel different. Bildaweer, your mind has opened new pathways to the arcana you study; Dustin, you feel your reactions quicken; Cemos, you feel strange as a bright light glows in your mind revealing a new way to touch the divine; and Fang, you feel a calling deep in your soul, reaching out to you, something feral and destructive.

Congratulations combatants, you are now Level 2. Go ahead and roll HP in the new Leveling Up Rolls thread. Tweak your sheets and we'll continue this adventure.
Dec 5, 2016 7:19 pm
Dustin traded out his bolts for the poisoned bolts. Since they had gained some breathing time he cut a suit of armor to fit Stool and helped Stool into it and gave him a dagger.

There you are my friend, you look more like a warrior now. Topsy, Turvy ? Do you want to claim some armor and weapons also ? Saarith it might be best for you to arm and armor up too especially as you might help bypass some troubles.
Dec 5, 2016 7:44 pm
OOC:
You guys also had the case of poisoned bolts you created before the ambush (short the three you shot). The poison is a DC 13 drow sleeping poison. If they fail, they are poisoned (disad on attacks and skill checks) for 1 hour. If they fail by 5 or more, they fall unconscious for an hour unless they take damage or are shaken awake (requires an action).
Sarith is already in studded leather/shield/shortsword.
Dec 5, 2016 8:33 pm
Good work everyone, and impressive magic. It is almost as if you two didn't need weapons at all to be dangerous. He thought looking to Fang and Bildaweer.

Cemos, good sword work and to put yourself in harms way, for the rest of us. I say thank you.Stool you did good work letting us all keep in touch silently.

Now it seems we are back to deciding what to do. Sarith what do you know of the temple and what should we expect going there ? Do you know anything about what this priestess can do ?
Dec 5, 2016 8:51 pm
The temple is a shrine to Lolth. There are a set of ensorceled jewels that adorn the spider motif. It's also where the junior priestess, Asha, lives. More often than not, she's there. Sometimes attended, sometimes not. More than that, I've not been able to get more information out of the guards. I've only really spent time here as a slave. I'm to be taken to Menzobarranzen to be executed for my crimes. As for the Mistress, I know she's a full Priestess of Lolth. She is VERY dangerous. She has the ability, at a minimum, to consort with Demons. Her magic will far outstrip yours, be assured. You can hear him scoff, even through the mental link.
Dec 5, 2016 8:57 pm
Demons, well now that is certainly dangerous. It looks like getting your hammer back will be even more dangerous Eldrith, but I did say I would do it.
OOC:
What do we know about guards to the cafeteria ? Or how it usually was when we cleaned it or cooked there ?
Dec 5, 2016 8:59 pm
OOC:
From the 2-6 days or so you guys have been here, you've noticed that aside from your work detail and the two guard posts, there really aren't guards on duty anywhere else. Just the drow that are routinely walking around doing drow stuff. They don't seem to go armed when not on duty (at least not with swords and shields, you don't know about their crossbows).
Dec 5, 2016 9:22 pm
I could scout things out, anyone have a magic that can make my skin black ? After all I have the look in clothing but not skin tone. I could see what the food team might face and signal you to let you know. Then the mission to the temple will probably need our most powerful warriors, perhaps even you, your Majesty.
Dec 5, 2016 10:33 pm
Dustin looks for anything to disguise his skin tone.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(16) + 5 = 21

Dec 5, 2016 10:36 pm
You don't find much of anything that would be successful in achieving a disguise that would pass. With the few things you found, you'd end up looking like someone in blackface.

That said, if you want to try it (maybe the drow you come across first are absolutely stupid or roll critical failures on their perception), there is some ink in a well on a shelf as well as some ashes from some kind of smoked something in a small dish on the same shelf.
Dec 5, 2016 10:39 pm
Dustin gives it a shot hoping drow see in black and white like himself with dark vision.

Ash around his eyes and the ink used on his face and hands if there are no gloves on the armor.

Rolls

Saarith peaks his head down and works very hard to stifle a derisive chortle.

I hope they are deep into their cups when you make your appearance, elf. Otherwise they will surely spot you. Do you understand any Undercommon? That's how they typically speak. They understand elvish well enough, but you'd have to have an exceptional story to fool them. He warns with a chuckle.

Dec 5, 2016 11:02 pm
Loads up his crossbow and will scout out the cafeteria.

Hiding in the mist and sound of the waterfall as much as possible.

Rolls

Hide - (1d20+9)

(19) + 9 = 28

Dec 5, 2016 11:10 pm
As you sneak down the bridge, you see that you have a pathway about 30 feet long, one that is pretty narrow, to get to the platform that the cafeteria is off of. While you hide in the mists, you also notice that to get to the cafeteria, you have to pass by the stalactite that houses both the temple and the chambers of the Priestess.

Secondly, roll me EITHER a d100 or a Fate Dice roll (choose Fate from the dropdown and just use what it defaults to). Your choice.

You sneak along the path, making your way along carefully. For the first bit, you are as silent as death itself. Hardly a rock is disturbed as you gracefully glide to the bed in the path. As the wall bends away from you, you round the corner. Unexpectedly, there is a large rock that you stumble over, twisting and dancing your way, desperate not to fall. You end up on your feet, chest heaving. A quick glance tells you no one, save Sarith, witnessed your stumble. With a gulp, you peek inside the open door of the cafeteria. You are in luck! Not only are there no drow in the room, there are also no quaggoths!
Dec 5, 2016 11:39 pm
Quietly, "Alright Sarith let's take all we can and head back to the others."

You make your way back to the tower without encountering any of the denizens of this place. All told, you've recovered approximately 60 ration packs between the two of you (each pack contains enough food to feed one person a full day's meal, they each weigh 2 pounds. we aren't exactly tracking encumbrance by weight, but by Theater of the Mind rules. If it seems ludicrous to carry that much, it is. If you can narratively explain how you are pulling it off, I'll likely let it slide). All told, for your current crew of 14, you have enough food for everyone for 4 days.
Dec 5, 2016 11:58 pm
Dustin passes out the food to everyone.

Alright everyone take some of the food and rations. The cafeteria mission is done so I need volunteers for the temple run. I want some heavy hitters after what Sarith said of the place.

Trust me, I thought about that, and I would be fine leaving with what we all have. I didn't have really unique items but it would be nice to get my rapier back. Alright glad you will be coming. Bildaweer hopefully I can talk with you a bit, later though. Whoever is coming then I am happy to have you along. Be prepared with your most powerful strikes. Eldreth you might want to come along so we can hand you, your hammer. Jim Jar, you want to come with us ?

Dustin then continued, The temple is not in view of the rest of the place so let's move now. Sarith and I saw no one on our way along the bridge.

Dustin will scout ahead if need be to see if the temple is having services or is empty.
Dec 6, 2016 3:13 pm
Aye lad, I wouldn't be missing this scrap for anything! Eldreth says as she tests her grip on the unfamiliar sword.

Jimjar looks up from his study of the blade, Oh, I'm coming. These drow will feel my blade, that is for certain.

Derendil stands and nods his head, saying quickly in Elvish Oh yes, these usurpers will know the might of the Elvish kings! When offered armor and a weapon, he continues to decline.

Excellent. Also throw me another Fate roll.

When you creep to the entrance of the temple, you make your way to the heavy door. Listening at the door, you hear nothing. Chancing a peek inside, under the door, you spot no immediate feet. With the practiced art of rogues everywhere, you ease the door open and glance inside. Through the murk and the dim lighting, you see a large number of glistening eyes set on a jet black head. Thinking it must be the statue, you start to push the door open slightly more, only to see one of the eyes blink!

Dustin, you hear a shriek from inside the temple as your bolt lands squarely in the middle of the eyes. You hear a chittering inside the temple, the sound of clicking on the stone floor.

With a massive yank, Fang pulls back on the beast, causing it to slide across the room, coming nearly to the door. At that moment, almost as if rehearsed, Bildaweer and Dustin both trigger their attacks: crystalline beam and crossbow bolt intersect, slamming into the spiders chittering pincer mouth. Yes, Cemos, even without activating your divine sense, you feel the plague of evil pulsing in this place. At the foot of a large bed is a heavy looking wooden chest. A small table with two chairs and a small silver framed mirror sits on the left while a small shrine sits on the right with a carved image of a spider worked in bone and ivory.
Dec 7, 2016 2:31 pm
Dustin indicates to pull him up and tells them what he saw and what he didn't see people or spiders.

A quick check to make sure that there were no bells on the ladder. If not he handed one end of the long silk rope he had to Cemos.
He will try to quietly move to the chest and tie the rope around it so they could hall it out. It could be opened later in the guard tower.

He also threw the pillows and blankets up they had been sleeping on stone now everyone would atleast have pillows.
He is wary of the small shrine but kept the mirror which might be handy.

Give me an investigation check. Can you also describe how you are tying the rope around it? The chest is ~6 feet long and stands about 2.5-3 feet tall, with a depth of almost 4 feet. This thing is massive, as chests go. You do see a lock mechanism in the center of the entire thing. If you try to lift one end, you find that you don't have the strength to lift it from the ground at all.
Dec 7, 2016 2:43 pm
Dustin stops in his tracks after almost hurting himself.
He motions for Cemos to join him.

I am not even sure we can get this through the opening, I am going to try and pick the lock, just watch my back friend.

Dustin, you lie in a pool of darkness, floating, without a care and without concern. As your body is sucked deeper into the well of solace that is infinity, you see a piercing light in the sky. God is a dwarve ? Dustin muses his face one of shock.

Wait oh Cemos what the ? Did I die ? Dustin looks to his finger.
Stupid stupid stupid I should have known to look for traps.

If the chest doesn't open Dustin will use those iron spikes and hammer as lock picks next time. (lol)
Dec 7, 2016 4:05 pm
The chest doesn't open at first, you suspect the click that was there was actually that of the trap triggering. However, putting an iron spike to the lock and hammering away at it quickly pops the lock and the lid pops up slightly. As you push open the lid, you see a veritable treasure trove of supplies:
4 Silken Gowns in black
a silver chain headdress set with small onyx stones
a drawstring bag holding two vials of a reddish liquid that glimmers as you jostle it.
A small leather purse with 24 gp, 30 sp, and a small moonstone.
A small leather purse containing a variety of dried herbs, plant pieces, animal fragments, bits of bone, etc (a spell component pouch).
A large dwarven hammer, its head wrapped in sillk
A finely wrought dwarven shield
All starting gear for all of you PC types.

As you look through the room, you notice a small hole with a ladder leading down once again, and once again, it is silent.
Dec 7, 2016 4:09 pm
I think this might be Eldrith's hammer. I will let you give it back to her Cemos.

Dustin puts his pack on and happily straps his rapier to his side.
He will pass the component pouch to Bildaweer and make sure everyone gets their items back.

Cemos I am going to check out that other hole. Dustin moves over and after hearing nothing proceeds down to look around.

Can we put the items into a party pool ? Like the money pouch and silk gowns. Dustin might like to keep the silver chain headress thing with onyx.

You find another nicely apportioned room. This looks to be like a room for a servant of some kind to the Mistress. There is a pewter pitcher and goblets on the table, a smaller chest, and a soft bed.

He will use the soft beddings to cover the sound of hammering open the chest avoiding even attempting picking the lock.

Bone dice with elvish characters (10 gp)
Black velvet bag with a spider-shaped onyx brooch (50gp)
Flask of strong syrupy blue liquor
Dec 7, 2016 4:45 pm
Dustin will keep the bone dice they just sound cool.
After passing up the bedding he heads up himself.

Yes Bildaweer, glad I was able to find Eldreth's hammer. Did you get a chance to look over the enscorcelled gems that Sarith spoke of ? I am all ready to get the heck out of here.

I would have liked to kill some more drow. Just as pay back for all they have done.

Dustin will toss those silver candles from the temple into the party gear.

Dec 7, 2016 5:39 pm
OOC:
To ruin a temple like that, you'd need a cleric capable of 5th level spells to cast Hallow. Generally (per my thoughts) once desecrated it takes a similar show of power to reconsecrate. That would be the only real thing. You are in the room with the bone shrine but below the room with the statue with the gem eyes. I'll allow an arcana check. Cemos, the feeling of evil is strongest right around the statue. Time wise, you've spent like 30 minutes since slaughtering the guards.

Dustin will thanks Cemos, "I owe you my life, I will try and pay you back." to Bildaweer, "I was hoping perhaps you could take me on as an apprenctice maybe right now though I want to head back to the guard tower. We might want to cut the bridge to this place and to the other tower. Make it really hard for them to run about this place.

Outside he sighs heavily, "Sorry Ront, I should have told you about the plan. If you had only held your anger a day."

As he heads back to the tower to let Stool and the others know they are safe and found peoples possesions he looks for the best spot to use ropes and possible not get soaked in the pool.
Dec 7, 2016 6:00 pm
As you stretch your mind to remember the layout of the outpost, the only spot that ropes would be functional to avoid water is further south near to where Ront was killed. Anywhere else, you'll need to brave either the webs, the water, or both.

Bildaweer, you don't recall any particular bits of lore about this statue. However, you do know (because you are an U Ferrari denizen of a sort) that it's not uncommon for followers of Lolth to enchant integral shrine pieces to magically track thieves.

You get nothing at all from the small bone shrine. Not even a twinge of magic.

Dec 7, 2016 7:03 pm
OOC:
Pushing on as it seems the 4 of you are all in agreement to move onward with expediency.
After about 10 minutes of effort, you manage to split up the amassed gear and make it back to the guard tower where you have set up a sort of command center. Adding the new loot to the ever growing pile of supplies, you see looks of appreciation and a sense that more than a few of your fellow former slaves are impressed you're still alive. Eldreth, careful to hold her tongue while you were nearer the temple, gives Cemos a large hug, followed by a hug to Dustin.

My appreciation lads. You've restored me to my arms and armor, and for that, I thank you. Now, to make our grand escape. What is the plan? We're armed enough we could easily take some of the spiders if it comes to it. We've enough cutting implements that we may be able to cut through the webbing and take a fall into the water below. From there, we should agree on an egress: north, west, or south? she says excitedly, the chance of getting out alive seeming to bolster her spirit.

Eldreth gains 2 Trust in your party. Sarith gains 1 Trust. Timing wise, you have about an hour until you believe there's a good chance more guards will be coming down to the pen to collect a work party. In that time, you'll need to make a few decisions:

1) Do you fight them or flee now
2) If you flee, how are you getting down
3) Once down (provided you survive the experience), which direction do you head

The NPCs will agree to anything you say at this point. Hash it out among the four of you (in or out of character, it doesn't matter to me) and let me know what your intended plan is. Once you 4 agree on a plan, we'll move forward (unless you run out the hour in game, and then you may have a surprise on your hands).

Dustin wants to get Stool home. That's one of his goals. So anyway that will eventually get them to Neverlight grove would be good. Heck it would be nice if we could hit a place to sell what we dont need and get some maps and dern it a nice place to bathe.
Dustin will Hug Eldreth back, "Couldn't have done it without Cemos. Glad to get them back to you."

We do have ropes that are very long we could lower people so the splash and fall does not hurt so much and we could lower the gear so the first down can pull the gear off to the side as well.

Going to organize to lower down people. I and those with distance attacks could wait up top incase spiders show up to shoot them.
Dec 7, 2016 7:25 pm
After the hug cemos blushes a bit and promptly shakes it off with an awkward cough. ah hum right....well your welcome. I think that's a fine idea dustin. Dec 7, 2016 7:54 pm
We could lower people to cut the webbing to make a hole. Lower 200' of rope so that we could keep people dry by others pulling them above the water with the rope till they would be above land then lower them. Then people could be dry instead of soaking.

One by one, the former slaves begin a delicate process of climbing down the ropes the 15 or so feet to the webs below. Each touch sends a light tremor through the strands.

Before too long, you have all 13 of you down on the webbing, safe as can be. At Sarith's suggestion, everyone remains as still as possible to avoid calling the spiders.

With a full complement of people, and supplies (which Derendil very helpfully packaged and strapped to his back), what do you do?

There is about 15 minutes left now until you think the work party will be retrieved.

Testing the rope, he leans over to check his ties, only to have his prodigious beard and newly restored amulet throw him slightly off balance. He tumbles through the air, flailing. A mess of arms and legs and beard. By some miracle, or divine intervention, or dumb dwarven luck, he manages to enter the water feet first.

Eldreth, Jimjar, Sarith, Stool, Derendil, and Buppido all enter the water, some with a fair bit of noise, others pretty quietly. So far nothing severe enough to attract beasties. Then up steps Dustin. Not content to just flop through the hole like his Dwarven compatriot, he makes his way to the edge of the webbing. Taking a poised stand, he flips off the webbing without leaving so much as a tremor behind on the threads. Flipping over multiple times as he fell, he enters the water hands first in a pristine dive, causing no splash whatsoever.

Now that you are all on the ground, with all of your recently liberated gear, you find yourselves on the banks of the lake. To the north of you, approximately 120 feet away, is the northern passage. Equidistant to the south is the southern passage. Finally, approximately 40 feet west of you is the western passage away.

As you all enter, and then exit, the water you note that Stool is scarily adept as a swimmer, needing little help. When Cemos speaks to Stool, he cocks his head to the side and shivers, sending his now-familiar spores over all of you.

There! Now we can all thinktalk together! Thank you for getting me out! I hated it there, except for Dustinfriend and friend of Dustinfriend, and maybe some of you others as well. You kept me safe. I want to go home! But I don't know the way other than across the Darklake. But that's a scary place! If we get there, our king is very wise they said. Wise in the ways of the Underdark that not even the DROW know about! Stool thinks at all of you.

Suddenly a cacophony among your group, debating about directions and places to go. After a minute of hurried talking and heated voices, here are the potential directions and inputs from everyone involved.

Buppido, the derro man, believes the best place to go is Gracklstugh. I know the way like you know yourselves, provided you get me to the Darklake! I miss home. It would be good to return in glory. We have many good pieces of equipment you could use there. Gracklstugh is wonderful!

Prince Derendil has no recommendations. I will gladly stay by your side, I'm eager to return to the surface!

Eldeth also offers no directions. Aye, I'm unfamiliar with this part of the Underdark. I'm of no help to those of you tryin' to navigate. But I'm pretty good at foraging and tracking, so I'll gladly going you. Just get me to the surface so I can get home.

Jimjar offers Blingdenstone as a target, using the northern passage. It's a deep gnome city, to be sure. But we have access to the surface from there, and we can bring Stool home on our way!

Sarith, strangely, seems very cooperative now that he's free of bonds and below the webs. We should take Stool up on his offer of sanctuary. Safety is a strong place to work from.

Shuushar indicates that going to Sloobludop near the Darklake is a wise choice. Aside from being able to get boats there, I can navigate through the Darklake. I long to see my people to try bringing them to my enlightened state!

Topsy communicates while Turvy does his now familiar bobbing about and not speaking thing. We don't want to go back to Blingdenstone! Anywhere but there is OK with us, but if you choose to go there, we understand.

As the group finishes yelling about all the different choices, you all settle in to discuss directions when three major things happen, all on top of one another:

A lone figure stands on the edge of the web to the south of you, gray skin barely visible in the dim light. It's stance is odd, and the head somewhat cocked.

You see the bodies of two giant spiders begin to move across the webs.

A long shrill whistle, followed by echoed yelling from the outpost that is now above you.

Velkynvelve awakes. Your escape is discovered.
Dec 8, 2016 6:38 pm
Cemos makes ready his hammer and his posture shifts to a defensive stance. no time to argue about it anymore, we need to move and fast!
OOC:
I don't care where we go, it's up to you guys.
Dec 8, 2016 6:39 pm
Topsy, Turvy I don't know why you don't want to go home but if we will get Stool home first it means you could make different plans at this Neverlight Grove.

Dustin then notes the figure and then the spiders.

North it is let's move !

If the figure on the web is in range Dustin wants to give him a crossbow bolt for his trouble then Bonus action Dash North.

Hand Crossbow - (1d20+7)

Hand Crossbow damage - (1d6+5)

(2) + 5 = 7

Are we sure Darklake is to the north? I do not want to risk getting close to Menzobarrazzan.
Dec 8, 2016 7:39 pm
As Fang asks his question, Sarith speaks up. No you dolts, Darklake is not to the north. It's almost entirely west of here!

Dustin's bolt springs free, at the very far edge of range (should be disadvantaged, so I rolled a confirmation and yours was the lower roll). The bolt lands and a guttural scream is heard. As you watch the figure fall, you notice tattered webbing around its body and a peculiar second bolt sticking from its face.
Dec 8, 2016 7:51 pm
Dustin is briefly stunned seeing a second bolt wondering if an insurrection is occurring.

He will remain alert by the north exit letting the others move past him. He gives Cemos look to stand on the other side of the entrance. Covering the others and hoping they head North also.

Dustin kept the crossbow ready if the spiders came close he would release a bolt.
Oh man I hate to admit it, but I am loving these Drow crossbows.
OOC:
Thanks wasn't sure of range or anything, I appreciate you making the roll.
Dec 8, 2016 7:52 pm
OOC:
Are you all still headed to the northern exit after Sarith's shout?
Dec 8, 2016 7:55 pm
OOC:
Isn't north the direction Jimjar said lead to Blingdenstone and Neverlight grove along the way ? Shushaar said way earlier his race was not a friendly one so I was trying to avoid this Darklake place.
Dec 8, 2016 7:57 pm
OOC:
Jimjar did at that. However, Stool said it was across the Darklake. Sarith also mentioned that he wanted to get Stool home and is advocating (now) the western passage for that specific goal.
Dec 8, 2016 7:59 pm
Bildaweer, please give me a History check.
Dec 8, 2016 8:01 pm
OOC:
Alright I guess I am confused, do we have to go to Darklake to get to Neverlight Grove ? Jim Jar made it sound like North could get us to Neverlight Grove then we would reach Blingdenstone. *Confused player*
Dec 8, 2016 8:08 pm
OOC:
Both ways will get you where you want to go. Sarita (and Stool) are remembering more of the crow flies path. Jimjar, who didn't spend a ton of time here, knows that Blingdenstone is north. He figures anywhere else you stop is "on the way" regardless of what the route would look like. You may know more after Bildaweer's INT check.
Dec 8, 2016 8:09 pm
Insight check to see if I think I can trust Sarith
OOC:
Post roll: Sarith has such dreamy eyes.

Insight check - (1d20+3)

(5) + 3 = 8

Dec 8, 2016 8:11 pm
OOC:
Heh heh heh It's great to be confused. I am ok with any direction other then hanging out waiting for spiders to drop on us. I hope Shuushar is a smooth talker to his people if we go West.
Dec 8, 2016 9:01 pm
Cemos will post up like a Sentinel in the front of the group, putting himself between the threat and the " non-combatants"
OOC:
I was looking at the map and west looks like it has a path out. Really doesn't bother me what we decide. If we want to go north will we have to swim to the other side of the shore?
Dec 8, 2016 9:05 pm
OOC:
From where you are, you have three paths now. All three are only accessible from the level you are currently on. When you were brought in, you were brought up using the lift in the far south (I think it's point 5). Guarded by two quaggoths at all times and requires those same two to raise or lower the lift from above.

No more swimming required to get out of Velkynvelve. Once you are out in the Underdark, who knows.
Dec 8, 2016 9:11 pm
OOC:
Dark Lake seems like it will be a swimmy type place LOL

We could always have a flashback scene to one of the DM handwavy times if you wanted to find out more about Darklake. :P
Dec 8, 2016 9:22 pm
OOC:
Oh a flashback. Grabs some popcorn.
Dec 8, 2016 9:31 pm
Waggly hands, vision wavers, a slow fade in from the side brings us to a murky memory of the slave pen prison denizens.

Near to a point at the start of our adventure, you had been speaking to Shuushar about means of escape. He told you he traveled the Darklake for many years. Additionally, he mentioned that his kind often went insane and that it wasn't friendly to landwalkers. Finally, he mentioned that his family was vile. Some hours later, during the length of time where you had nothing to do but estimate the molecules in the damp stone, you approached him for more information about the geography of the Darklake.

Many assume it is a large lake, landwalker. Shuushar said with a chuckle. It is anything but. A mass of underground rivers, tunnels and canals that connect water-filled caverns and chambers. The waterway stretches over 100 miles across and ceilings that are miles high in some areas and depths deeper than any living thing you know has ever experienced. There are many locks to raise and lower watercraft. My people make their money by guiding people through the area and selling watercraft. The kuo-toa said with a since of genuine gladness at the interest. And yes, it is unfriendly to the unaccompanied landwalker. With a proper guide, however, you would be able to go many places in the Underdark.

Waggly hands, vision wavers, a slow fade in from the side brings us back to reality.
Dec 8, 2016 9:36 pm
OOC:
Whoah ok Locks really ? Damn that is pretty advanced. Well if leads all over we could probably reach Neverlight Grove or this Blingdenstone, or Buppido's Gracklenstug. I am open to any place guys if Dark Lake is where it is at I am ok with it.
Dec 8, 2016 9:38 pm
OOC:
Yeah, realized that was something that likely would have come up in a regular tabletop version of this as part of the banter in the jail cells over the course of the day or so we covered in game. Hence the hand waggliness

History check. Seems like you don't need it anymore from what I've read but I'd like to learn a bit about these locations.

Rolls

History check - (1d20+5)

(18) + 5 = 23

Dec 9, 2016 1:47 am
OOC:
History check is still important. With that high a result, you guys earn a picture of the Underdark map! It offers no benefit on navigation, but gives you some quick orientation bits.
Bildaweer stretches his mind, struggling to remember the large map of the Underdark he'd seen at some point. Finally, it came to him.

Sweet. Just want to say how awesome everyone is for moving game along at a good clip. It's been a lot of fun.
Dec 9, 2016 2:08 am
OOC:
I'm trying to make sure it stays balanced between moving as quickly as Dustin can post during the day and ensuring you all have an equivalent chance to impact the story and the direction. PBP is fun that way.
Dec 9, 2016 2:28 pm
Ok looks like this Sloobludop is close and could get us to these Gracklestug and Mantol Dereth places and there is Stool's Home near Gracklestug. West it is.
OOC:
With the new knowledge could I have moved to the West passage ? I also want to see the body that fell since it is closer now.
Dec 9, 2016 2:42 pm
OOC:
Yup, that's why I had you all frozen in place at the dot. You shot the guy, he fell, and then we 80's movie freeze framed.
Yes, we should move west! Sarith says as Dustin makes to move that way. Suddenly, a dash south to examine the body. When you arrive, you see that it IS in fact Ront. The drow left the bolt in his eye. You note a number of large punctures on his body. His flesh seems to already be deteriorating. As you spend a few seconds there looking at the fallen orc, his other eye opens and is shot through red.

Graaaagh! he intones, struggling to rise to his feet. As he does, one leg falls off at the knee. At that, Dustin makes a narrow escape back to the group and starts to head towards the western exit.

Is everyone content with moving west now that Bildaweer has confirmed that west is the quickest way to Neverlight Grove, and will keep you further from Menzobarranzen?
Dec 9, 2016 2:50 pm
OOC:
Yes west it is.

Should I bring Ront with us? 😜
Dec 9, 2016 2:59 pm
Dustin's eyes go wide with bewilderment and horror.

"Ah Ront, I... When he sees him rise and one leg fall off at the knee, Dustin scrambles back to the others.

What the hell did they do to him ? Dustin had a horrified look on his face.
Dec 9, 2016 3:00 pm
JoshuaMabry says:
OOC:
Yes west it is.

Should I bring Ront with us? 😜
OOC:
How did you add that smiley ? I don't think Ront is alive he took an arrow from me, a big fall and he seems to be rotting. Dustin is officially freaked out.
OOC:
Oh and yes West is fine.

As your party begins to move through the western passage, Fang looks back over his shoulder and sees Ront crawling towards the group with mysterious intent. As he begins his crawl, the giant spiders drop down from the web on their strings and begin making their way towards the party, ignoring the apparently undead orc. On the crest of the cliff, you see the Mistress walk to the edge, her cat-o-nine tails in her hand, fury in her voice as she yells I will get you all slaves! You will be taught OBEDIENCE!

Sarith turns, raises his hand and a darkness swirls into the area, cutting off your vision of Velkynvelve, leaving only the mysterious, and dangerous, Underdark before you.

Let's move. He says, thrusting to the front of the group.

Congratulations, you are now on the lam! Chapter 1 draws to a close as our heroes feel that same warmth they felt in the guard tower. Muscles stretch, reflexes quicken, your mind clears: you are now level 3. Go ahead and using the leveling thread to hash out your new levels. Once you are all caught up and leveled, we will push in earnest into Chapter 2: Into Darkness.
Dec 9, 2016 3:15 pm
Dustin is only snapped out of his horror and stupor when the darkness descends. Even Ilvara's threat was lost to him.

Blinking and looking at the darkness even touching it.
He began to move after the others to the west.
Dec 9, 2016 4:00 pm
Ront had a terrible departure to the next life. Aye, let's get Stool home.
Dec 9, 2016 4:02 pm
Dustin nods to Bildaweer.

Yeah, I wish we could have put him to rest. Your right we need to get our brave companion home. Dustin looked thankful to Bildaweer for focusing him again.
Dec 9, 2016 4:29 pm
OOC:
I am just putting this out there but cemos is a follower of dumathoin and as a result he is a keeper of the dead, so if he knew there was an undead creature nearby he would be compelled to go set it to rest. It hasn't really came up in rp and I missed my opportunity to get it with Ront so I am gona say he didn't see the exchange with Ront and dustin because he was to focused on the spiders.

Dustin would have been right there with you. The Darkness is what prevented him from doing more. Dustin being a wood elve is used to the natural order and undeath is not natural.
Dec 9, 2016 4:34 pm
OOC:
Makes sense. Plus, consider that rushing back would have made you the sole person against an Outpost of angry drow with their priestess in combat range and pissed off. Even the most devoted paladin would consider the need to execute the undead with the need to remain alive to protect and slaughter more undead later. :) It would be an interesting urge to watch the inner fight for.
Also, locking this thread as we move to the next chapter of our adventure.
