3-1: Beneath the Streets

Jul 11, 2024 3:26 pm
As the party emerges cautiously from the basement into the evening, Ishi in the lead, the sun is setting once more on the city of Grayhaven. The bustle of evening activity seems more energetic than usual: more people on the street, which makes it easier for the adventurers to blend in and proceed through the Waterfront to the sewer entrance in the Market District. The Grayhaven Guard presence is light - most of the security seems to have gone to the harbor and the gates - and the few pairs of guards on patrol that Ishi spots are easily identified and avoided. You see a few broadsheets posted that proclaim you as Wanted by the Duke, but more than that, you see posters proclaiming the Queen's Fair: a festival that the city is preparing to hold in a few days. This explains the aura of excitement and anticipation in the air as you enter the Market District, where shoppers and vendors alike chatter about the upcoming celebration.

https://i.imgur.com/iwR3yif.jpeg

Arriving at a grand-but-somewhat disused sewer entrance, Elysia easily picks the lock on the gate and the party slips through. Descending the stairs, you see that this part of the sewer was built for ease of access and maintenance: the stairs are wide enough for a work crew to descend with tools to clear obstructions or tunnel collapses and lug in sledges bearing masonry to rebuild walls and supports. The contrast between the streets above and the sewers below is stark: the sound of the crowds above dulls as the party proceeds. While the stench of the sewer is an assault on the sense of smell, but it's actually not so bad, at first. It's not that dissimilar to the smell in the tannery's basement, after all. It's just a bit stronger, which is a testament to the engineering that keeps water flowing through the underground tunnels to keep the waste matter of the nation's capital moving.

Soon the party reaches another locked door - an ominous sign: is it to keep especially determined people out, or to keep something in? Once again, the lock is trivial for Elysia to open, and now the party enters the sewer proper. Here, the sewer is a well-mortared stone tunnel that proceeds in five directions. Each tunnel has a central channel with flowing water with a walkway on one side or the other. Every several paces, there is a sloped chute perhaps a foot wide for effluence to pour/slide down into the channel. These are easily stepped over. Here, by the entrance, the air is thick but not overwhelming and the walls are dry. Orienting themselves, they decide which way to go.
OOC:
Which character is holding the map to navigate?
Everyone in the party can see well enough to proceed through the dark tunnels, but to read, you will need light once you move away from the entrance.
What is the light source, and will you keep it lit, or only light it when you consult the map?

Elowin has the best night vision, so she takes point with Ishi. She grunts in acknowledgement when he calls her Aunty.
I am not your mother's sister. I don't have a sister, only a brother who likes to play more with constructs than with girls. So I'm not your father's sister either.

"People are irritating, irrational, and capricious. If I find a girl who is not, I will consider courting her dear sister. Until then..." Adran holds up a small metal gear and turns it, causing it to light up so it can be used to illuminate the map.
OOC:

She is just about to refute Ishi's claim but stops.
I... I actually cant refute that. I will have to think about this.
Anyway you can call me Aunty if you like. And call him:
She points at Adran Galanodel "Uncle"
She turns her attention to the filthy sinking tunnel they are walking in. Best that her brother doesn't see her grin.

Morik usually whistled when he was in a jaunty mood, and he was quite jaunty this morning after the successful rescue of Findal (and getting paid), and now he was whisked away on another adventure. It'll be a grand one, he was certain, but he did not want to whistle, lest he attracted unwanted attention. Instead, he petted Jeffery and fed him some goodberries, and offered him jerky, in case he liked it.

The mission itself sounded exciting. Powerful artifacts. Old tunnels from an ancient map. Powerful factions seeking the artifact. "They'll be singing about our band," Morik chattered mindlessly to his newt companion. "Bards will sing of our adventures, and you'll be in it! Ain't that grand?"
OOC:
Morik should be at the front or near it. He's got 60ft Darkvision, proficient in both survival and perception, and he's presumably the hardiest of the group due to Wild Shape.
Jul 12, 2024 2:52 am
OOC:
Zin is definitely somewhere in the back end of the group without being completely last.
"I think Unkie is better paired to your Aunty," Eozindra mentions to Elowin with a conspiratorial smirk.

From within her bag, the bard produces a case designed especially for holding parchments of importance. "Best we keep the map in here whenever not in use. Especially down here, less the damp cause irreparable damage." She might be a silly girl, but she had brains enough to plan and prepare.
OOC:
Scroll/map case from her starting gear. She didn’t have anything in it.
Jul 12, 2024 1:44 pm
OOC:
I’ll take up dead last, keep an eye on our six.
Keeping her head on a swivel, she silently laughs at the conversations that have been occurring while watching behind them to make sure they aren’t being followed. Happy to avoid being called "Aunty," she assumes due to her half-heritage (not that she minds), she keeps silent about that topic. Still amused though from Adran’s thoughts on women, she does comment. "If the women you find dear Adran are all with these traits, you have been associating with the wrong ones. I have met many who do not meet those criteria, even pride myself on not being fickle personally. We shall have to find you a person who isn’t any of those things, I shall keep my eyes open for it." Her words, said with emphasis, are meant to be slightly impassioned, and to hide her jest.

Getting another joke in while she can, she leans forward slightly toward her sister. "I am doubtful we could say you aren’t a bit capricious yourself," her voice full of jovial warmth to convey the smirk on her face.
Jul 12, 2024 2:22 pm
In fairness, Adran thought to himself, those were my views on people in general. They include women, but are not limited to them. Speaking of irritating, they make so much noise, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Duke's guards can hear us all the way down here.

Without a word, he hands the lit gear to Eozindra, to be kept with the map. Shield in one hand and hand crossbow in the other, he finds himself towards the middle of the pack. Shrugging, he follows along through the sewers as they begin their trek with his new companion by his side.
OOC:
As they pass through the market, he'll pick up a new waterskin and a few days of rations to replace what he left Findal. (With GM approval, of course.)
Jul 12, 2024 3:36 pm
MaJunior says:
As they passed through the market, Adran picked up a new waterskin and a few days of rations to replace what he left Findal.
OOC:
Yes, that's fine. Much like with the crossbow bolts, just deduct the standard cost for those items to reflect the hurried purchase.
The initial excitement of evading guards and entering this new environment slowly gives way to the determined tedium of routine: Ishi and Elowin lead the party down passages, pausing at every intersection for Eozindra to take out the map and inspect it with Adran's glowing gear. She's able to give general directions, and sometimes this leads the party into a sewer tunnel that dead-ends, and the party has to backtrack. Morik finds that Jeffery does enjoy little nibbles of jerky, though only when the druid tears them off by hand for the newt. In the moments when the banter dies down, the only sound is the drip of moisture, the gurgle of the water and sewage in the channel, and the soft clicking footsteps of Adran's construct companion.

After an hour, though, the party has made some significant progress. Part of that is reflected in the walls themselves: at a couple of points, the character of the sewer changed, as the newer construction gave way to much older tunnels that slope slightly downwards, made of different stone, with the tunnel walls less rounded and more rectilinear. The whole tunnel is narrower, with both the walkway and the channel narrower. The refuse chutes are vertical holes, resulting in a much worse smell and treacherous footing (Difficult terrain). Still, the party continues.

As the party slips and slithers through the slime in the latest direction that Ishi and Elowin have chosen, there is a burbling in the channel, and a motion against the current that instantly has everyone on high alert. There is something swimming in the sewage, moving toward the party! In addition, Elysia thinks an intrusive thought, not her own: a sense of eagerness/anticipation, and an image - a memory - of tearing apart a giant rat and eating it messily. How will you taste? comes the overpowering thought in her head.

ROUND ONE

The backed-up sewage roils and undulates as some large mass moves against the current. Then the submerged shape rolls over, itself resembling a giant, glistening turd...but then a pair of eyes appear and rise up out of the reek, dripping fecal matter...but the eyes keep rising, and you see that they are not side-by-side, but rather the eyes are set one above the other. The eyes continue to rise, embedded in a flap of foul flesh, and more eyes are revealed as the flap is lifted out of the ooze. At the same moment, a seam appears in the giant dung, and it splits open, revealing jagged, filthy teeth in a very large mouth. Two long appendages fling foul sewage across the party as burst up out of the slimy channel. You all have heard about these creatures, though none of you had ever encountered one before now: this surely is an otyugh!

Nobility never shaped Elysia into what she labeled as the prissy women of society. Venturing into the more poor and abandoned areas of her home city helped keep her from being bothered by filth. This… she can’t keep her nose from wrinkling. With a silent sigh of acceptance, the rogue launches an attack with her rapier, happy she wasn’t as close as daggers would’ve required her to be.

ROUND ONE, continued

Ishi leaps heroically into the muck with a splorch and hacks down at the slimy mass of the otyugh with his sword, which keeps glancing off its squishy sides.
Still on the slippery walkway, Eozindra triggers her crossbow, and sinks a bolt into the monster (Otyugh take 5 damage)!
Choosing not to jump into the channel (which would reach his chest), Morik pulls strands of magic from the aether and flings them behind the monster, hoping to illuminate it in the darkness, but the foul creature dodges the glimmer, which sparkles on the wall behind it!
Elowin steps confidently off of the walkway into the muck to confront the creature, ignoring the squish of slime as it oozes into her boots, and hits it with booming blade (Oytugh takes 9 damage), and it is surrounded by Lunea's will. The moon's power is felt everywhere, even underground. As the otyugh's attention is on the cleric, Elysia wades into the channel on the other side, stabbing the monster in the flank (otyugh takes 16 damage)!
Adran's modified crossbow misses, the bolt of light absorbed into the slime. His metallic companion bristles defensively.
https://i.imgur.com/J2iIG0bm.jpeg
With its prey moving close enough to attack, the otyugh does not need to move to strike: the two long appendages flail and grasp like a squid's tentacles! A tentacle whips out at Elowin, the huge mass gapes open again to try to take a bite out of Elysia (who hears "must taste!" in her mind), and the other a tentacle slaps at Ishi.

Elowin takes 9 damage.
Ishi takes 17 damage.
Both Elowin and Ishi are grappled and restrained as the tentacles wrap around them (On their turns, they can use their actions to attempt to break free, DC13). Until they break free of the restraint, they each have DISADV on their attack rolls and cannot move from where they are.

ROUND TWO

Ishi's eyes bulge, veins stand out on his neck and forehead, as he strains and then bursts free of the otyugh's spiky tentacle, which have left round gouges in his flesh. With a triumphant yell, Ishi is no longer grappled.
"Enjoy this moment, you monstrous muck-face!" Eozindra unsettles the otyugh and then calls a Bane down onto it. "It's among the last you shall ever experience!"
Morik transforms into a bear and wades into the slime - his sensitive nose is appalled anew at the stench - but his claws are unable to find purchase on the rubbery, slimy flesh of the monstrosity.
Still grappled, Elowin calls down the influence of Lunea, but the otyugh ignores the goddess.
"No! Bad Otyugh! No tasting!" Elysia shrieks, and then stabs the hideous monster again (Otyugh takes 18 damage). "And let go of my companions!"
Adran uses his repeating shot hand crossbow, the mechanism reloading and firing by itself, without needing to be reloaded (Otyugh takes 9 damage). Adran's nameless clockwork companion, which some of the party has started calling Cobalt, jumps into the channel of dung with the others to be close enough to the monster to deflect its attacks when/if it attacks someone adjacent.
The Otyugh picks up Elowin and slams her into the stone of the walkway. Elowin must succeed on a DC14 CON save to take half of the damage (3, not 6) and not be stunned. The otyugh's thoughts continue to play out in Elysia's head again: memories of people screaming as they are dismembered and devoured, but the particularly revolting thing is that Elysia is experiencing this from the otyugh's perspective. Simultaneously convinced that she'd be tasty and recognizing that she is hurting it more than anyone else, the otyugh tries to bite Elysia again, and Adran uses his reaction to have the Steel Defender succeeds in Deflecting the attack (I rerolled for DISADV)! The other tentacle flails around, long enough to attempt to attack any other party member: Adran, Cobalt, Ishi, Eozindra, Morik. The tentacle coils around the Steel Defender (even with the Bane penalty of -2, a 15 hits it). The Steel Defender takes 8 damage and is grappled/restrained.
OOC:
I forgot to roll the Bane die at first. I didn't roll it for the attack on Elysia, as it couldn't have affected the result, but I did roll it for the attack on the Steel Defender...and it didn't affect the result.

Hm. I did not tell it to run off like that. I'll have to determine why it did that and make corrections so it doesn't repeat that mistake in the future.

Attempting to assess what happened with his constructed companion, Adran nevertheless takes another shot at the foul (literally) monster.

OOC:
I apologize; I should have clarified it with you. To explain: the Steel Defender needs to be adjacent to the attacker in order for the Deflect Attack ability to work. Since the otyugh is not adjacent to Adran, the command to Deflect an Attack didn't make sense unless the Steel Defender moved to be in a position to perform that ability.

If you wanted it to stay adjacent to Adran so that it could only defend Adran if the otyugh moved closer to him, we can retcon it because I made an incorrect assumption.

ROUND THREE

"Noooo! Dare to hurt my friends! Die,die, die!" Frothing at the mouth, Ishi cleaves the monster's blobby body (otyugh takes 15 damage).
Eozindra reloads her crossbow and looses another bolt (otyugh takes 5 damage), calling out to the unconscious Elowin "We’ll get you out of there!" (Elowin is healed for 6 HP).
Morik the bear roars and digs his claws into the blubber and tears it open, then he sinks his jaws in and tears the foul flesh, ripping off one of the tentacles. (otyugh takes 23 damage).
Elowin is stunned.
""No, please, stop," Elysia closes her eyes and stabs the monster again, sinking her rapier up to the hilt in the roof of the hideous mouth. (otyugh takes 18 damage and dies).

As the creature shudders in death spasms, the Steel Defender wriggles free of the grasping tentacle, and the party uncoils the one grasping Elowin. Elowin regains consciousness as everyone who'd gone in climbs out of the channel, dripping fecal slime. Taking stock of their surroundings, the adventurers realize that this section of the tunnel is backed up with sewage because the otyugh had made its lair here; it had created a dam of sorts from the remains of previous victims to create a foul pool for it to luxuriate in. The dam is mostly bones, but other indigestible items may be mixed in, too.
After the combat, the party members' HP are:
Ishi (18/35), Eozindra (15/15), Morik Bear (34/34), Elowin (15/24), Elysia (24/24), Adran (26/26), Steel Defender (12/20)

Casting a quick look over Elowin, she's happy to see her okay and conscious again. Turning away, trying to get control of how she feels, she gives the Steel Defender a gentle pat on the head with a quiet, "Thank you" as she passes by it. She tries to hide the quiet sniffle, not liking the way the events that just occurred rattled her. It's not often that she feels as young as she is. In an effort to distract herself, she goes to see if any of the indigestible loot is salvageable. She's already gross, she figures she has nothing to worry about.

Ishi slashes around with his sword in the piles of muck hoping to find something useful He is calming down, but he keeps muttering 'muckface, muckface'
Jul 15, 2024 11:05 pm
Crossbow still in hand, one bolt in the other ready to be loaded in, Eozindra sprints towards her sister and flings herself against the dark-haired half-elf in a most unladylike fashion. Though Elysia had turned in an attempt to hide her unease, there are things kin do not need to see to understand. Paying no heed to the mess, the bard wraps her arms around the rogue’s shoulders from behind, hanging like an additional cloak for the unnerved thief. With her cheek pressed against Elysia’s shoulder, she whispers "Are you alright?"
Jul 15, 2024 11:36 pm
Morik stomped away from the creature, sick and disgusted at his fecal covered fur. He ambled over to Adran, who was magically everything cleaner, and raised his dirty paw and began moaning.
OOC:

OOC:
It says it's limited to one cubic foot. The question is... will our GM allow multiple castings to clean larger items, or if a thing is bigger than a cubic foot, does the spell simply fail?
Jul 16, 2024 3:06 am
Adran begins repairing his metal canine companion and continues for a couple of minutes. Then he begins creating a fizzing, sparking wand that has gears in the handle for some reason. He waves this wand over the party members, and everywhere the wand passes, the muck is cleared away. Elowin removes her boots and pours out the sludge, and Adran gingerly and thoroughly cleans out his sister's footwear. Then the artificer begins to work on Morik's thick, shaggy fur: a big job.
OOC:
Prestidigitation lasts for an hour, so you can continually apply one effect after another. In this case, it's clean an item after clean another item after clean yet another item after clean that item there...and so on, though you could intersperse other effects in between cleanings. With regards to a single creature/object larger than 1 cubic foot, I think you clean 1 cubic foot at a time and then move on to the next area of the creature/object. If you did nothing else for an hour, you would have 600 discrete cleanings: far more than enough to clean the bear and the items of the three PCs from the waist down.
Meanwhile, after Eozindra and Elysia comfort each other, the rogue gently extracts herself from the bard's embrace and wades back into the muck to join Ishi in searching the dead otyugh's lair. It takes some time, digging through the bones, pulling out various objects and shaking them off to see what they are, then tossing them back if they're not of interest...after a while, the water begins to flow more thoroughly as the two disassemble the grisly barrier, and a fair amount of the waste begins to float away once more. As the water clears somewhat, the two are better able to identify the different kinds of bones. Most of them are animal bones, though some of them imply stories of their own ("This is surely a horse's thigh bone!" Ishi exclaims at one point. "How did a horse get down here??"). But mixed in amongst the other bones are definite traces of humanoids that ventured too close and met their end in the maw of the beast: here are the bones of a halfling or a human child, here are buckles that once adorned a belt or a pack, here a bracelet. The items are mostly metal, quite pitted by digestive enzymes, often scored or rent by gnashing teeth: too brittle or marred to be of use. Here's a hilt with a snapped off blade. But at one point they find a cable; pulling on it, they find it attached to a small bag made of chain links: some bravo of the past undoubtedly thought it made a striking pouch, for it is heavy with the weight of old krugerrands bearing the likeness of the old King, Queen Sophia's father. The party gains 90 krugerrands, protected from being defaced by the bag, which took the brunt of the digestion (Adran can clean the coins now or later).
OOC:
Note: the cleaning and the searching will take quite a bit of time.

QUESTION FOR THE PARTY: Do you want to extend that time into a short rest, so that people can spend hit dice and heal naturally, or do you want to continue on without further healing?
Jul 16, 2024 4:37 am
Morik snorts and nods his head up and down in a gesture of appreciation at Adran, profusely thanking him and feeling quite refreshed all nice and clean.
OOC:
I'm fine either way, don't mind resting, and don't mind going straight away.

OOC:
I’m a rogue, I’m down to rest if it means potential loot, but I’m also satisfied with finding 15gp for each of us. I like monies too. Up to the group.
Before extracting herself, she does end up having a small smile at the lack of decorum her sister has, yet she does feel better with the affection given. "Not quite, but better. That was indescribably revolting to experience. I may need to slide my bedroll up beside yours this night," she admits sheepishly.

Going through the strange amalgamation of items that had been ingested, she does try to throw any scrap metal that maybe could be salvaged towards Adran.
Jul 16, 2024 5:46 am
Elowin rubs her head. The knock on her head rattled her, but she can go on. I would rather we found a better place to attend our wounds and equipment.
She do transfer 15 krugerrands, her share of the coins, to her own coin pouch.
If they choose to stay, she would use 10 min to ritualise a detect magic, to help search the much for valuables.
Jul 16, 2024 6:16 am
Eozindra squeezes Elysia one last time before letting the rogue slip away. "My pillow is yours."

As the group examines the remains and clears the blockage through the sewer, the bard stows her weapon after giving it an approving nod; she felt far more useful with this than she did before. Then she looks to Ishi and Elowin. "Do either of you need to take a breath? Or would you prefer to do that somewhere … hopefully less acrid."

As she comments on the stench, a realization comes to her and she exclaims aloud suddenly, then digs in her pouch and produces a vial filled with a slightly clouded liquid in a pearlescent swirl of lavender and violet, flecked with a golden glimmer. She lifts the perfume bottle’s stopper and dabs the scent upon the gaiter of her cloak which she then secures high on her neck.

Finding the result passable for the current situation, she offers the same to all her companions; for Morik, she volunteers to press a few drops delicately onto the sides of his snout. "Until you have a cloak to use it on."
OOC:
Zin will play her Song of Rest either way when the group does take a break to give everyone an extra D6 on their HP recovery. She feels like resting now or later should be primarily Elowin and Ishi’s decision since they got the worst of it.

OOC:
Adran will simply continue cleaning everything he can until they are ready to move out. Coins, boots, armor, weapons, bits of metal, whatever.
Jul 16, 2024 3:32 pm
With the water now clearing away the fecal flotsam and no confidence that they'll find a cleaner place any time soon, the party moves a little ways down the tunnel and rests for a bit as they each get cleaned up. Elowin's ritual reveals no magic in the area other than what the party is carrying - Eozindra's armor glows, which may be surprising. As Ishi emerges first from the muck to get cleaned up and rest, he dumps the assorted metal bits he and Elysia had found at Adran's feet. Either Eozindra's perfume is particularly powerful, or the reek has become so omnipresent after two hours that the PCs hardly notice the smell of the sewer anymore, but whichever it is, the essential oils of the lavender are particularly strong and fill the air with the floral aroma. Morik sneezes a couple of times: great big ursine detonations that echo in the enclosed space. The party spends the rest of the time peacefully chatting and enjoying one another's company in the glow of the mild post-combat survivor's euphoria that they are starting to get to know well. At the end of the rest, Morik reverts back into his dwarf form, completely clean of all but a bit of grime on his boots.
OOC:

Adran got lost in thought for a bit before continuing. "I'm the reason the temple didn't have a defender for... well, longer than I'd care to admit. Taking things apart is easy. It's putting things together that is a challenge... one it took me a while to get a handle on. Although, before we left Mara I made sure the guardian was working properly."

He shakes his head. "It hasn't been that long since we left, but it feels like that town was a lifetime ago. Amazing how much -- and how quickly -- things can change."

After their rest, the party packs up again. Eozindra consults the map and the group sets out, falling back into their established marching order (unless you tell me it's changed): Ishi and Elowin in front, Eozindra and Adran walking together in the middle, and Morik accompanying Elysia at the back. There are a couple of intersections, but each time the direction indicated by the map corresponds pretty closely to one of the passages. The tunnels have narrowed further, and the stonework is even older, but for all that, this stretch of the sewers are well-maintained.

But after an hour, the party has become accustomed to Eozindra's perfume, and they begin to notice an odd odor underlying the thick smells of the sewer. In addition, you spot that there are strange, dry slips underfoot, like scraps of oil paper or empty bits of sausage casing on the ground. Each PC who cares to can take a moment to evaluate all this by rolling a WIS (Nature) check...and let me know if you kindle a light to assist you in examining these things.
Jul 17, 2024 8:13 pm

While Ishi stays vigilant watching the tunnel ahead, Elowin stops to confer with her colleagues. She uses her rapier to scrape one of the strange slips off of the gritty floor. Eozindra uncovers the gear briefly, so the group can get a better look, but dazzles her own eyes in the process. "It's not droppings..." Morik, Adran, and Elowin realize that what they're looking at are the molted casings of some kind of invertebrate creature...or rather, many invertebrate creatures. With that, they pause to listen for a long moment. Above the soft gurgle of the sewage flow, there is a slight sound: a rustling, skittering noise...

The party is currently in a long tunnel, with a 5' walkway to the "left" of a sewage channel maybe 6' wide. Morik can tell that there is a very slight slope heading down in the direction the party is heading, further evidenced by the fact that the sewage water is flowing more quickly here. There are narrower side tunnels feeding into this one: 50' ahead is a tunnel, and 30' behind is another tunnel. I'll endeavor to post a map later this morning. Edit: here's the map.

Three feet deep, and it's flowing like a gentle stream: it's not going to sweep anyone off their feet, but it is perceptibly moving.
grifter730 says:
Is the yellow stuff the water bits? As in, can't turn into a bear here and stand properly?
OOC:
Yes: grey is the walkway (pretty dry) and the yellow-brown is the channel (pretty wet). The little horizontal yellow-brown lines are chutes where the sewage slides down from somewhere in the city far above you: still easily stepped over as the party continues down the tunnels. The space does not prevent Morik from using Wild Shape to turn into any of the animals in his repertoire, including the bear. It may be gross, but having two paws in three feet of slime is not going to slow down a bear.

Similarly, the members of the party can rearrange themselves if they wish.

Elysia stops to examine the traces and doesn't notice the movement near her in the channel. Eozindra sees the movement and cries out, alerting Elysia, Adran, and Morik to the presence of something in the flow. Meanwhile, Ishi and Elowin hear her, but their attention is on what they see: a wriggling mass scurrying out of the drain chute in the ceiling above Ishi, dropping towards the barbarian. It is a swarm of centipedes that is crawling over Ishi. At the same time, Morik (who was already looking back because of Eozindra's warning) is the first to notice a second wriggling mass dropping from the channel. Jeffery perks up; will these be good to eat? No...they're too big.

Finding the group surrounded, Eozindra takes note of the two visible threats and the one yet-to-be-seen. Like a nervous fidget, she brings her offhand bolt to her mouth. Instead of chewing a fingernail, she quickly slips the sharp edge against her lower lip to draw the bead of blood required as sacrifice for hopefully handicapping these foul things. She licks the wound and tastes the iron, wincing slightly as she does, and begins dancing the unloaded bolt between her fingers as she pulls the invisible strings of her magic in the air. "Not today," she whispers.

"Hopefully they aren't excrement insects," Adran mutters.
"Snakes and reptiles also mulch, right?" Elowin quips in response, as she turns to see why Eozindra called the warning. Elowin casts Faerie Fire on the tunnel behind Elysia, so that the effect flashes over the centipedes that are skittering toward Elysia and the creature lurking in the water. The tunnel behind the party glimmers with otherworldly moonlight, as does the second group of centipedes and the creature in the channel.
OOC:
Those of you who attacked swarm2 or the creature in the water after Elowin's turn - Adran and Elysia - may roll a second attack to represent the ADV from Faerie Fire.
Gripping his staff tightly, Morik hops past Elowin into the sludge and attacks the swarm on Ishi. The staff blurs, whooshing through the air, each swing catching an arthropod and crushing it. In this way, Morik precisely picks off 9 of the centipedes.
The remaining centipedes under and on Ishi - which we'll call "Swarm1" - crawl on and attempt to sting him with their many forcipules.
Adran follows his sister's gaze, his crossbow coming up and around to release a bolt into the water toward the submerged creature.
Shuddering with a revulsion that transforms into eye-bulging rage, Ishi yanks out his war hatchet and begins to furiously scrape the bugs off of him. Six of them fall in pieces.
The other group of centipedes - which we'll call "Swarm2" - continues its forward movement into Elysia's personal space, crawling on her and stinging her savagely, repeatedly. Swarm2 crits on Elysia.

Elysia takes 23 damage and remains - barely - standing.

Recovering from her initial shock, Eozindra sings out a malediction on their antagonists (casting Bane on Swarm1, Swarm2, and the creature).
Whipping out her rapier, Elysia leaps, stomps, slices, and stabs at the stinging arthropods in her space. Blurring with speed in her desperation, she destroys 12 of the centipedes in Swarm2.
The submerged shape of the creature emerges from the water, long, feathery tendrils groping toward Adran. The artificer tried to dodge the feelers, but they brushed against his scale mail, and the scales began to rust and crumble (Adran's Scale Mail is reduced to AC13). The creature is a Rust Monster!

Adran's AC drops by 1 as his Scale Mail armor begins to rust.
Elysia is badly hurt (1 HP remaining).
There are three enemies: Swarm1, Swarm2, and a Rust Monster.
All three enemies have the effect of Bane (a penalty to attack rolls and saves) from Eozindra's concentration.
Swarm2 and the Rust Monster are on Faerie Fire from Elowin's concentration, so attacks on them have ADV.
Adran's AC has dropped 1, from 19 to 18.
That ends round one.

Early in round two (right after Elowin's turn), when Morik wades forward, he stumbles on something below the surface of the sludge. It's some kind of creature...or at least the remains of one. Now it's a rotted corpse that was stuck on something under the water. It is bloated with gases and bursts as it hits the surface, releasing a stinking cloud. The stench is so strong, so sudden, and so foul that every PC must roll a CON save, DC12, to avoid being Poisoned (Morik rolls with ADV, Steel Defender is immune).

I'm running out the door for a bit, but before I go, here's some quick follow-up questions:

1) @forkbeard: Ishi was already raging. Is he going into a frenzied rage this turn? I'm assuming so, since that would have given him the ADV that you rolled, but I wanted to make sure.

2) @forkbeard: Do you want me to roll the DC12 CON saving throw for Ishi? I will when I return in a few hours if you haven't.

3) @runekyndig: Do you want to roll a second attack roll (to represent the ADV from Faerie Fire) for Elowin's spiritual weapon, or shall I?

4) @MaJunior: Any commands from Adran for the Steel Defender?

Elowin calls upon Lunea, and once again the air fills with the gleam of moonlight and the calming presence of the goddess. The cleric then flings her arm and a glowing sickle appears, which swoops and stabs at the rust monster. As her turn ends, the moonlight grants her a boon, and Elowin gains 8 temporary HP.
Morik wades forward in the channel of sludge, nearly trips on a bloated corpse, and manages to overcome his revulsion at the cloud of foul gas that jets forth as the corpse bursts. Swinging his shillelagh single-mindedly, he continues smashing centipedes. Swarm1 takes 12 damage.
Elowin, Eozindra, Ishi, and Elysia shudder with revulsion at the smell, but do not succumb to nausea. The unbreathing Steel Defender is not affected. Adran, focused on the rust monster trying to crumble and eat his armor, is not so lucky.
Adran is POISONED.
At the end of his turn, Morik gains 8 temporary HP.
The few remaining centipedes still crawling on Ishi - Swarm1 - attack the raging barbarian. But he ignores their stings and takes no damage.
Despite the gorge rising in his throat, Adran looses his crossbow at the rust monster: the magic bolt sinks into its carapace (Rust Monster takes 11 damage). The artificer stays protectively between the metal eater and his Steel Defender.
At the end of his turn, Adran gains 8 temporary HP.
The Steel Defender does nothing on its turn.
Not even able to notice nausea in his frenzy, Ishi attacks with his war hatchet, hacking and slashing. The last few centipedes are exterminated. Swarm1 is destroyed.
At the end of his turn, Ishi gains 8 temporary HP.
The centipedes that were crawling on and stinging Elysia (Swarm2) are clearly just trying to get to the rust monster's latest victim. Swarm2 surges forward one square into Eozindra's space and attacks the bard. But their little forcipules aren't really into it, and Eozindra takes no damage.
Gritting her teeth against the stench, Eozindra whimpers in fear at the prospect of a life without her sister. She casts Healing Word on Elysia (Elysia regains 5 HP). Then the bard attacks, hitting the centipedes with a crit (Swarm2 takes 10 damage).
At the end of her turn, Eozindra gains 8 temporary HP.
For her part, the adrenalin and horror of being swarmed by bugs overwhelms any nausea Elysia might feel. The rogue slashes and stabs with her rapier, picking off the Swarm2 centipedes that are now crawling on her sister (Swarm2 takes 10 damage).
At the end of her turn, Elysia gains 8 temporary HP.
Encouraged by the initial taste of sweet, sweet steel, the Rust Monster attempts to feed on Adran's armor some more. But the artificer keeps his distance, avoiding the feelers so that his armor does not degrade further.

Determining a critical hit: a critical hit happens when a combatant rolls a 20 on a d20 attack roll.

I have run games where we determine alternative rules for the damage of a critical hit, but I don't believe we've done that, here. So...

Calculating the damage of a critical hit (from p.196 of the PHB): Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal.

Since Eozindra rolled a 20 on her attack last round, I rolled the extra d8 for damage since you hadn't. OK?

Elowin's glowing sickle misses the Rust Monster, but she sinks an arrow into it, dealing 7 damage. The arrow's head crumbles into rust and is destroyed.
Morik moves and dashes to get adjacent to the Rust Monster.
Adran misses the Rust Monster with his crossbow.
Steel Defender dodges.
Ishi moves past Elowin and flings a javelin, hitting the Rust Monster for 8 damage. The javelin's head crumbles into rust and is destroyed.
Swarm2 moves from Eozindra to Adran with the intention of attacking, but that gives Elysia an opportunity...
As the centipedes scuttle and leap from her sister, Elysia slashes and stabs with her rapier; Swarm2 takes 15 damage. The remaining centipedes of Swarm2 attack Adran. The centipedes' forcipules are unable to pierce Adran's weakened armor before Eozindra destroys the last few arthropods (Swarm2 takes 6 damage and is eliminated).

Elysia...?

Prevented from going after the tasty-smelling Steel Defender by the druid and artificer blocking its path, the Rust Monster tries to devour more of Adran's armor. The feathery tendrils brush lovingly at the scales, and where they pass, rust blossoms. Adran's scale mail is now AC12. Oblivious to danger in its single-minded need to feed, the Rust Monster begins snuffling up the orange dust as it sprinkles onto the walkway at the channel's edge.

No, it is adjacent. Either the rust monster has long legs (more likely) or it's a strong, buoyant swimmer. Eozindra, Elysia, Adran, and Morik are all within 5' melee range.

Round Four

The power of Lunea throbs once more, the thrilling moonlight filling the party with a sense of warm summer nights in the open air...despite the reality that everyone is fighting savage monsters deep in the sewer. Elowin sinks a shaft into the Rust Monster, dealing 11 damage. Just like before, as it strikes, the arrowhead is destroyed, crumbling into rust. Her spiritual sickle misses. As Lunea's light suffuses her, at the end of her turn, Elowin has temporary HP.
Spinning his staff, Morik swings it up and over his head, bringing it down on the Rust Monster's head. The Rust Monster takes 9 bludgeoning damage. The glory of the moon fills the dwarf; as his turn ends, Morik has temporary HP.
Adran looses an energy bolt at the Rust Monster, and this time the magic projectile spat out of the weapon strikes true. The Rust Monster takes 8 piercing damage. The moonlight fills the artificer with the sense of his childhood and the wonder of discovering ancient secrets in disassembling a construct at night. Thus, at the end of his turn, Adran has temporary HP.
Growling and snarling, Ishi launches another javelin and it crits, skewering the Rust Monster for 6 piercing damage. The Rust Monster shudders and dies as the javelin's head dissolves into rust. The moonlight gives him peace in his triumph. At the end of his turn, Ishi has temporary HP.
Eozindra stops herself from stabbing the dying creature as even in death it is a hazard to ferrous metals and could dissolve her blade into rust. Soon enough, time and vermin will do their job and the corpse will return to inert organic material that won't destroy metallic belongings...but for now, everyone gives it a wide berth. The romantic moonlight fills her heart with song, and as her turns ends, Eozindra has temporary HP.
Wide-eyed at her close call, Elysia catches her breath, relieved. The light of the moon is a comfort like an older sister telling funny stories in the dark. As her turn ends, Elysia has temporary HP.
OOC:
Note 1: When you already have temporary HP and then get more, you get to choose whether to keep the existing amount or replace it with the new amount. So if you had 8 temporary HP from before and didn't lose any in the combat, you'd probably want to keep the 8 rather than choosing to replace them with the 5 from this turn. But if you had 8 and took more than 3 damage, then you'd want to take the 5. The temp HP remain until your next long rest, so make sure to note them on your character sheets.

Note 2: While it didn't damage anyone itself, the Rust Monster's effects have been felt: every arrow and javelin that hit the Rust Monster is lost, and Adran's scale mail armor is now AC12. However, any missiles that missed the Rust Monster are slimed but usable.
The encounter with the ravenous creatures has ended in another victory! It's too early in the day to take another long rest (PCs can only take 1 long rest per day).
OOC:
As you are all considering whether to continue immediately, search, rest, and/or cast some spells, I'd like each of you to roll 1d20 without any modifiers, like I've done here.

Elysia blinks a few times before responding, "Once this poison runs its course, I'll be fine." She runs her eyes over her sister before settling at the realization that she was fine. Honestly, both of them alternated easily at who seemed to be the older sister in their behaviors, but she'd always look after her family no matter the fact she was still younger. Looking at Adran's now damaged armor, she notes, "I'll keep an eye out for some replacements for your gear."

After a bout of coughing, Adran recovers from his choking nausea, able to take some deeper breaths. Adran is no longer poisoned.

The party heads out again, Eozindra periodically pulling out the light to provide navigation from the map and softly calling out directions. Another hour of travel passes with nothing particularly noteworthy beyond the gradual descent, generally following the water down, though just a few minutes after leaving the corpse of the rust monster (slowly drifting along with the current), some of the party members hear distant voices calling out to one another, coordinating somehow. The acoustics are terrible, and no one in the party is able to make out any words. As they travel, the voices recede, and soon they hear nothing but the gurgle of the sewer channel and the plop of new deposits. At this point, Morik is pretty certain that the passages the party is traversing are actually below sea level. Where does all the waste go? he wonders.

The party continues their trek through the sewers, and now they are in an even older part of the underground tunnels. The channel here is wider, the current of sludge flowing much faster, and occasionally there are narrow flat walkways that span the channel and function as bridges. It is at the end of the fifth hour of their journey into the sewers that the heroes reach a section of the tunnels where the map indicates that they are to take an intersecting tunnel headed up, at least for a while. The slope is steeper here, with the walkways and channel having steps to help in the descent. Because of the slope and the steps, there are a series of small falls. The sound of the sludge flowing fast and down these steps is thunderous, echoing in the close confines of the tunnel and making conversation difficult without shouting.
OOC:
While in this loud section of the sewer, everyone has ADV on Stealth checks and DISADV on Perception checks.
At this point, the tunnel is taking the party roughly south, towards the flow. They left the intersection several minutes ago: ahead/south there are steps leading up, behind/north there are steps leading down, and to their right the channel roars down the steps, flowing north. There is a narrow bridge 30' behind and another 25' ahead of the party.

With all the noise, the party does not notice the rats until they are on them. Eozindra slips slightly on a bit of moisture and puts out her hand to steady herself...but the wall is soft and squeaks as she touches it. It's a rat - the first of many that are coming out of cracks in the wall. Soon the wall is covered with rats emerging from these cracks. Dozens of rats swarm out of the cracks and scurry underfoot, clinging to boots and legs as they desperately search for something to gnaw. One group of rats swarms on Elowin, another swarm of rats attacks Morik, and a third rat swarm attempts to nibble on Eozindra. Two giant rats skitter out of the darkness, racing down the steps, and the one in front attacks Ishi. Ishi takes 5 piercing damage. Behind, a third giant rat leaps up the stairs after Elysia. Elysia takes 3 piercing damage.

Remember to subtract damage from your temporary HP first!

Rats! - Round one

In the first moments of the rodent attack, Adran pulls out his hand crossbow and flings a bolt past Giant Rat 3. Using hand motions, he instructs Mara to attack Rat Swarm 2 as the rodents scurry all over Morik. Rat Swarm 2 takes 9 damage.
Over the roar of the falls, Elysia yells "Do you need to borrow the shortsword I pinched yesterday?" over her shoulder to her sister, and stabs Giant Rat 3, dealing 7 piercing damage.
Seeing red, Ishi swings his blade in a vicious downward cleave that would surely have split the rat in twain had he not stepped on a scurrying rat and slipped slightly; stone flinders fly as the blade chips the walkway.
Elowin whips out her rapier and tries to stab the rats that are crawling on her arms, but they keep scurrying out of the way.
Eozindra hesitantly holds her crossbow, wondering how to use it to get the rats that are crawling up her torso onto her arms.
Content to ignore the gnawing of the rats on his own legs and trusting that Mara will continue to take care of them, Morik draws upon the energy of the earth and the sea. The power of both is so strong here deep underground, that his staff swells once more, sprouting buds and leaves. Then he spins and twists the Shillelagh over Elowin as she flails at the rodents, the knobs and knurls of the living wood flicking rats off of the cleric and into the torrent of dirty water. Swarm1 takes 8 damage.
The malignant Giant Rat 1 attacks Ishi, trying to sink its obscenely long incisors into the barbarian.
Ishi takes 2 damage (reduced from 4).
Behind it, the starving Giant Rat 2 jumps in the flow of the channel. The current sweeps it 10' downstream, bringing it close enough to attack Ishi as well.
Ishi takes 2 more damage (reduced from 4).
Seriously injured, Giant Rat 3 nevertheless attacks Elysia again.
Elysia takes 10 damage.
The swarming, starving rats attempt to devour their prey. Rat Swarm1 continues to attack Elowin, Rat Swarm2 still tries to chew on Morik, and Rat Swarm3 attempts to gnaw Eozindra.
Swarm2's many teeth find gaps in Morik's clothes and armor.
Morik takes 7 damage.

As round two begins, Adran squeezes next to Eozindra and reaches out a hand to cures Elysia (Elysia gains 8 HP). In the moment, the primary impression he has is of all the rats crawling on the bard's shoulders and peeking out of her pale hair, but later, in times of rest, he will recall that, being close to her reminded him of warm moonlit nights by the temple ruin as a boy.
The Steel Defender, Mara, snaps and bites at the rats swarming over Morik, but the force-empowered teeth crunch no rodents.
Buoyed with sudden energy from two friendly hands on her shoulder, Elysia lunges, plunging her sword between the giant rat's eyes. It's a CRIT, and Giant Rat3 dies.
At the other end of the group, the cords stand out on enraged Ishi's neck, and he chops the rat in front of him, cutting off its head. Giant Rat1 takes 9 damage and dies.
Elowin calls upon Lunea's might and her rapier shivers with the energy of the moon's glory once more. She attacks Swarm1 with her Booming Blade. Swarm1 takes 9 damage.
Eozindra reaches out to heal her sister (Elysia gains 10 HP), but as she does so, her graceful, delicate hand briefly brushes Adran's larger, oil-stained hand. She's not sure he notices the touch, but she feels a blush rise to her cheeks. To cover this reaction, she furiously stabs at the rats covering her body. Swarm3 takes 5 damage.
Spinning and twirling the heavy shillelagh, Morik continues to attacks the rats crawling on Elowin. Swarm1 takes 8 damage.
Giant rat 2 floats further downstream, attacking Morik. The unexpected incisors connect! Morik takes 5 piercing damage!
The number of rats in Swarm1 are greatly diminished, but they still attack Elowin. Their little teeth scratch and scritch against her heavy armor, unable to get at the flesh beneath.
Undaunted, Swarm2 attacks Morik. These are beginning to get under his armor. Morik takes 9 piercing damage!
Desperately hungry, Swarm3 attacks Eozindra, but she is unharmed by the ineffectual rodents.

Having stowed the hand crossbow before moving closer to Zin in order to heal Sia, Adran instead draws his dagger to try and help fend off the rats swarming Eozindra -- after all, he may be next. Not wanting to stab, he instead angles the blade and tries to scrape in a downward motion, hopefully cutting the little rodents while instructing Mara to continue helping Morik.

Smiling and feeling almost as good as when they walked into the tunnels, Sia spins on her heels to face her sister. Seeing Adran help her only makes the warmth in her chest as his assistance grow more. Maybe she can count on these people despite the short time knowing them. Adran attacks the rat swarm on Eozindra, dealing 5 piercing damage to Swarm3. It is clear that trying to cut the rats with a blade is difficult.
Mara is much more efficient: the metal machine's force damage catches and tears rats from Morik much faster than the others are able to with their piercing and slashing weapons. Swarm2 takes 10 force damage.
Elysia shares a grin with Adran as she uses her rapier to attack the swarm on her sister from the other side. Swarm3 takes 21 damage.
Ishi leaps into the swift-flowing channel and cleaves Giant Rat 2, killing it. All the giant rats are dead, but Ishi needs to roll a DC10 STR save as the current drags at his legs (remember to roll with ADV due to Rage). If you fail, Ishi will be knocked prone and swept 10' north.
As a girl, Elowin used to imagine the sound of the bells in the ancient temple before it was a ruin. One of the benefits of being in Lunea's comforting embrace is that she can hear those bells, echoing forward through time. The rats crawling on the cleric do not find the sound as comforting. All of Swarm1 squeaks and dies.
Self-conscious at being the center of attention not for her charming banter, enticing music, or heartfelt tales but instead for the vermin crawling in her hair, Eozindra awkwardly swipes at her body with her long blade; Swarm3 takes 5 damage.
Seeing that Elowin is clean of rats, Morik switches to striking the ones that are crawling on his neck and into his beard. Swarm2 takes 6 damage.
Giant rat 2 is DEAD.
Desperate to escape but with no safe avenue of escape, Rat Swarm3 continues to attacks Eozindra.
Rat Swarm2 takes offense at the dwarf's attempt to evict his passengers; they try to bite Morik. Morik takes 4 damage.

OOC:
If you want to say that, because Elowin was in the same space as the rat swarm when you cast Toll the Dead on it, she should also be affected, I like that: it's very generous of you to include yourself as a target, and it makes sense in the narrative framing of a sonic/necrotic attack in that space.

BUT! Two other things should apply to determine how much damage she takes:
1) She needs to roll a saving throw for herself, and
2) She should only take 1d8 damage, as she had not been injured.

For expediency, I'm doing both here.

ROUND FOUR

Adran attacks Swarm3 with his dagger, but is unable to pierce any of the rats.
Meanwhile, behind him, Mara crits on Swarm2, dealing 8 force damage. The force of its jaws tear all of those rats apart.
Elysia attacks Swarm3 with her rapier and misses each of the scurrying rodents.
Ishi makes his STR save, staying upright in the current. He wades forward, letting the current push him along, arriving by Eozindra. He slices with his greatsword, dealing Swarm3 13 damage.
Looking back, Elowin sees that Eozindra is still festooned with rats, so she calls upon Lunea again. The death knell tolls, dealing 7 damage to Swarm3. Eozindra takes 1 damage from the spell.
Eozindra shudders and tries to flick the remaining rats of Swarm3 off of her body with her rapier...but is unable to skewer any of the vermin.
Seeing the last member of the party still under attack, Morik leaps into the channel, and the current immediately knocks him over. But he is shoved up against Ishi, enabling him to attack the vermin. He smashes the last few rats in Swarm3 with his shillelagh for 12 damage.
[ +- ] End of Rats!
All of the attackers have been defeated, and Ishi and Morik climb out of the channel.

Elysia, Ishi, and Morik must roll CON saving throws.

I have a communal healing prayer that can give everyone some healing. I can walk and sing, but not much more. Someone else must take point.
She begins to sing a song in old elvish, about the peaceful moonlight to lay in your lover's arms in, and the invigorating moonlight to hunt by.
At the end of the very long song, they all realise that the wounds have closed, the bruises have faded and they are indeed ready to make love or war in the moonlight again.

The party catches its breath, and Elowin's ethereal voice accompanies the presence of Lunea to heal everyone 13 HP.

As the party heads out again, they ascend the stairs. The tunnel continues on, and then they reach a place where the tunnel forks. Eozindra's read of the map is that the path they want is straight ahead, but both paths of the fork lead in directions away from the "location of the Abbey." Eozindra is confident that both routes could work, but...

As Eozindra checks the map at the fork, Morik notices a gleam in the chink of the wall of something reflecting the light she's using. Stooping down, he sees that there's a fairly large gap in the wall where the mortar holding the bricks together has crumbled away. It's filled with scraps of leather and clumps of fur; probably it is a rat nest, perhaps one or more of the rats who attacked the party back a ways. The gleam is of some coins that were is a gnawed and decaying coin pouch. As Morik moves, Jeffery keeps scampering up to remain on the highest point of the dwarf; the newt is clearly spooked by the experience of getting dunked in the channel and almost swept away earlier.
OOC:
If Morik chooses, he can scoop up the 9 coins, or he can point them out to someone else who might be more interested. It's hard to tell what type of coin they are without examining them more closely.
Eozindra, meanwhile, recognizes that one of the tunnels is going ahead level, and the other is descending. The map is not particularly clear on the depth of the "location of the abbey," but she has observed that the deeper they've gone in the sewers, the older and more poorly-maintained the tunnels have been. So she decides to take the level route.

The party continues slogging through the tunnels for another hour. At this point, six hours have passed since they entered the sewers.

Elysia reaches into the hole and gently pulls out the rotted leather so as to not drop the soiled coins. There are 9 in all. After a few moments' excitement that they might be some kind of ancient collectible, she wipes away enough grime to realize that these coins have probably only been here for a few years: they're regular krugerrands, with the old King's head on one side and the Grayhaven crest on the other. Elysia gains 9 krugerrands. From her time in the city, Elysia knows that the girl queen has not yet decreed new coins to be minted with her likeness.

Morik eats goodberries as the party continues following Eozindra's directions.

The party continues for a seventh hour, through many twists and turns, Eozindra always directing the group onward toward the "location of the Abbey." The stone here is very old, each block carved from a dark grey stone very different from the lighter shades earlier in their trip. The channel is wide and narrow, and the ceiling of the tunnel is so close overhead that taller adventurers would have had to stoop. The walkways have been worn smooth by many centuries of people traversing these same paths, and the weight of history is thick.

After another hour, Eozindra stops them by a break in the wall, where the masonry of the tunnel collapsed long ago. The others eye it doubtfully at first, but the bard insists that there is a passage on the other side that heads much closer to the direction they want to go than the main tunnel, which has been curving slightly to their left for the last half-mile or so.

The party proceeds through the crack and down a slippery scrabble into a lower, perpendicular tunnel that is noteworthy on two accounts: it is made from smaller bricks of a reddish stone that has little flecks of crystal in it, and it is not a sewer! There is no channel here, though the air is close and damp this far underground. Morik and Adran satisfy themselves that they will be able to climb back up the rubble to get to the sewer tunnel, and the party proceeds in the direction that Eozindra indicates for another hour.

OOC:
Note: if you'd like to play out more of that conversation, feel free to do so in the "Rest Interludes" thread.
Having determined the direction, Eozindra covers the light again as the party continues. So it is that twenty minutes or so later, they easily notice the faint glow of lamp light up ahead. This faint illumination is enough to reveal that the texture on the red stone walls comes from a series of small carved plaques with worn, illegible writing on them, one above another, with a new "column" of them appearing every few feet.

As they continue, the party approaches the light cautiously. Still some fair distance away and undetected, the PCs are able to see that there are boxes or other obstacles set up in the tunnel ahead, silhouetted by the lamp light, with a narrow path leading between them. Shadows dance on the walls as mostly-obscured people move in that space, passing in front of the lamp. The more perceptive can hear the low murmur of whispered or muttered voices.

Raising a hand to stop the party from further advancement, Eozindra crouches and waves a hand to her sister. In a hushed tone, she murmurs some few words, rubs her fingertips against one of her eyelids until a lash comes free, and pushes the stray hair into a small ball of sap-like material. She presses the gum to Elysia’s shoulder and the rogue ripples out of visible sight. The bard creeps backwards a few steps to further settle into a hiding position while the area ahead is surveyed.

Beyond the incantation murmured, Eozindra remains silent through this process. Having done enough such reconnaissance missions with her younger sibling, the two are in sync and able to slide effortlessly into their respective roles. The bard reaches up to the copper wire concealed in her hair and prepares to reach out quietly with simple "yes or no" questions that can be replied to with the previously established code of nonverbal cues.

Eozindra extracts one of her eyelashes and casts Invisibility on Elysia with it. ::I keep this up, I'm going to run out of lashes...:: Elysia vanishes, and creeps forward on feet as silent as a cat.

Approaching the lit area, Elysia focuses on the people first. There are eight of them...and they are weird. Not only are they a motley gang of many races - at first glance, Elysia sees a couple of dwarves, a human couple, an elf, a halfling, a gnome, and a dragonborn - but as she lingers longer and longer, each one bears at least one very obvious abnormality: an alarmingly out-of-place animal trait. As she watches, these people carry on a conversation that she doesn't understand, but her familiarity with Celestial allows her to recognize that they are speaking Infernal to each other. This inversion of Celestial is peppered with occasional obscenities from the common trade language of the Greenwold, a dialect of the Imperial Common you all speak. Apparently Infernal doesn't have enough obscenities on its own.

They take no notice of Elysia and continue their jeering, crude conversation. Gradually, the rogue takes stock of other details beyond the freaks themselves: the shadows are being cast by various small structures that these people have constructed for themselves from broken bits of salvaged materials: old crates, cracked barrels, torn sails, crumbling pieces of brick. They're living here in squalor, and the stench rolling off of the eight unwashed bodies reminds Elysia of how much better the air quality is in these tunnels than they were in the sewers. The oil lamp gives off a greasy smoke and flickering light, but it is enough to see that these people have broken into the graves set in the walls to make additional living space (and at least one latrine). That helps her to realize that where the party and these freaks are - these sparkly red-brick tunnels - is a catacomb: each plaque on the wall is the cap to an alcove containing the remains of some long-dead resident of ancient times.

The only path through their camp is a narrow gap in between their shanties.

Eozindra runs through a brief collection of Message queries to find out:
"More than three?" Cough.
"More than five?" Ahem.
"More than ten?" Silence.

Then, trusting her sister to know how to manage, the bard whispers, "See what you see then come let us know. Tread careful, zus." She turns to the rest of the compatriots to inform them, "More than five, less than ten individuals ahead."

The bard settles into her shadow alcove to await Elysia’s return with details about the specifics ahead. Not wanting to risk her being discovered, the older sibling had only pressed for immediate information on a headcount so the rest could be prepared in the unlikely-but-not-impossible chance something went awry with the rogue’s reconnaissance.

Elysia is already there at the edge of their camp, no stealth check necessary: they have not noticed her. But if she tries to venture further in, to steal an item, look through a shack, surprise attack one of them, or do anything else that would bring her even closer to them, then she should roll Stealth (and yes, do so with Advantage).

Of course, Eozindra has already received some information about their numbers, so the rest of the party can act, too. Or Elysia could return first and report everything that she's seen (no Stealth needed to just return).

Taking in what she sees, she’s shocked at the abnormalities that the folks gathered here display. While she can acknowledge the oddity they are compared to most of their races, she grew up with someone that has albinism, so abnormalities don’t disgust her. Instead, her heart beats with compassion as she fears that they’re down here because those above chased them away. Deciding to test this theory before reporting back, Ely decides to take a closer look at the items inside the nearest shanty, checking for both anything that could be harmful and a sign they have nefarious intentions, as well as anything shiny as exquisite since it’s just too tempting for her.

Confident in her invisibility, Elysia creeps forward. The gnome's head swivels on its strange neck, but it appears to be only because he's swallowing a bit of meat. Since they all seem to be gathered around the one oil lamp telling jokes, Elysia slips into the closest stinking hovel and grabs the first (and only) shiny thing she sees: an exquisite glass cup sitting amongst a bunch of trash. But the cup was broken in the past and was pasted together with something sticky: it comes apart in her hand, the pieces cascading down. By the time the pieces hit the ground, Elysia is already gone and heading back toward the rest of the party. The halfling squeals in dismay, rummaging around in the trash for the pieces of his "treasure." The others watch with some sympathy, not suspecting that anyone else was among them.

Elysia rejoins the others.

Eyeing her sister more than the others, she explains, "There is a group of eight ahead, but I have no reason to believe they are here for any reason other than a place to exist. They speak Infernal and all have rather odd differences to their genetics." She explains what she means by describing what they all looked like before continuing. "I believe it’s in our best interest to show them we are not here out of violence. I also feel that Eozindra is the one who should lead the way." Placing a supportive hand on her sister’s shoulder, she feels confident in her thought that someone who is more similar to them and skilled in charisma is the best choice to approach tbe group, but she plans to be right behind her if the group agrees, ready in case something goes wrong.

As Elysia begins to speak, the bard shakes her head to toss her curls and drop the invisibility spell. "Alright," she acquiesces and adjusts her bag, producing her simple flute. Hood lowered so her ghastly pale skin is plainly visible, she begins to lead the group towards the band of misfits ahead, playing a mellow piece she often utilized to soothe her own anxious nerves during troubled times at home. By producing a calming chain of notes, she hopes to herald their entrance in the least confrontational manner she can muster, letting those ahead know they are not alone but hopefully communicating that they are not in danger at the same time.

For everyone's benefit, this is what Elysia describes:
- a red dragonborn with crabs or spiders for hands
- a dwarf with cat ears on the top of the head, instead of on the sides
- A halfling with the snout of an anteater instead of a mouth
- A dwarf with porcupine quills in place of any and all hair
- A human with holes for ears like a seal or whale
- an elf covered head-to-toe with shining scales like a snake
- a human with the pink, starry nose of a mole
- a gnome with the long, folding neck of a heron
Aug 12, 2024 5:23 am
The dwarf with cats ears starts, sitting bolt upright at the first note of the flute. The woman with seal ears turns to face Eozindra a moment later. The other misfits turn and hunch their shoulders defensively, facing the unexpected music. The dwarves, elf, and the gnome (his head extending on his long neck to peer over a ramshackle hovel) would obviously be able to see the advancing party members, but it seems like the humans, halfling, and dragonborn can, too, despite the lack of light. They watch the advancing albino and her companions warily.

Someone in the party - whoever makes the initial communication - should roll CHR (Persuasion), DC15, to see how convincing you can be to assure them (if you want to assure them!) that you mean no harm.

In addition, any character who wishes to can roll an INT (Nature) check, DC13, to see if you recognize anything else about these vagabonds.

Ishi and Elysia have this interaction, and as Elysia has finished her admonition, the same thought occurs to both of them: who are the people who exhibit random animal traits? People of the fae, usually, but these ones speak Infernal, which means...

They all have demonic ancestry. Somewhere in their family tree, a parent or grandparent or even further back seduced, was seduced, or consensually mated with a demon, and the genes of these infernal matings have manifested in strange traits and inherent language in their distant offspring. More commonly, these are referred to as tieflings. Ishi and Elysia realize this simultaneously, and they mouth the word to each other: "tieflings!"
OOC:
D&D generally assumes that tieflings are part human and part demon, but it has always made more sense to me that demons can make pacts/congress with any species, not just humans. So we have this motley collection here.

Needless to say, despite their heritage, tieflings can be good, evil, or neutral.

Having garnered the attention of the group ahead, Eozindra lowers her flute and raises her hands in a slow wave. "Hello there," she says encouragingly. "We hope you do not mind us passing through. This is quite a place you’ve got down here!" She smiles shyly and places her empty palm against her chest. "I am Eozindra." Pausing for response, she stills her steps and allows the group time to read her party’s body language. The bard also evaluates whether she should attempt to speak in a language other than the common tongue.
OOC:
If it doesn’t seem that they respond to common, she will check to see if any of them know Celestial, Elvish, or Sylvan and then try again.

As Eozindra has already revealed their presence, Elowin slowly walks up next to her. She is not showing aggression, but she is showing that Eozindra is not alone.
Aug 12, 2024 9:14 pm
Morik was aghast at Eozindra's decision to reveal themselves, but perhaps there was wisdom in it. And if not, there's always teeth and claws to back her up, so Morik stepped forward, forcing himself to look as non-threateningly as possible, though his whole gait was like a coiled spring ready to pounce. He waved at the crowd, and smiled an awkward smile that might be misconstrued.
Aug 13, 2024 3:18 am
Adran stayed back with Mara. He wasn't much for people, and this was a potentially delicate situation that Eozindra was much better suited for handling. He wondered, albeit briefly, if perhaps people assumed he viewed himself as an authority on all manner of topics... then he scoffed a bit, firm in his belief in the benefits of a meritocracy. Their group was one of diverse talents, after all, and each member should be allowed to take the lead when the skill required was a skill the truly did excel in.

Adran would no sooner tell Zin how to handle a group of oddities than he would let Ishi tell him how to build, well, anything really. As a matter of fact, it was because of...

...oh, right. People. He touched Mara's head gently and went back to paying attention.
Aug 13, 2024 5:46 am
The eyes of the eight misfits are all very large as more people step into the circle of light cast by the oil lamp. But as Eozindra speaks, they subtly relax. "I am Eozindra," the elf says, and several of the tieflings exchange looks, knowing they should respond but not sure that it's OK. The man with the pink, starry mole nose does not hesitate, however. "Hel-LO!" he says with an admiring smile. "You are welcome anytime!" The red dragonborn flicks him in the back of his head with one of their thumbs, which itself is equipped with a large grasping claw. "That's enough, Digger. Let's find out what the pretty people want with us before we start proposing marriage, hey?" The dragonborn's eyes narrow, which anyone who has interacted with dragonborn for any length of time will recognize as a sign of humor. "They call me 'Clutch,'" the dragonborn continues. "You can imagine our surprise to have such fancy visitors as highborn elven ladies. I'm adraid we're ill-equipped to entertain guests." The halfling taps the dragonborn on the thigh, then squeaks in a high, whistling voice: "What are you sayin', Clutch?" Clutch bends down, way down, to look at the halfling. "I mean we don't have anything to share and nothing to give to these people, Tandua." Tandua the halfling squeals and hides the bits of broken glass behind his back. "They can't have my glass!"
"Three elves and a dwarf have no need of your glass, Tandua!" one of the dwarves - the blond dwarf with quills instead of hair - chuckles. "There's more than that, Histrik," the gnome says, extending his neck really high and looking past the circle of light with his darkvision. "There's three others: a human, and, way back there, another elf with a big dog." The feline dwarf's brown ears swivel as he focuses on the gnome. "What kind of dog, Lookout?"
"I'm not sure, Manool. I've never seen a dog like that before..."
The human woman with no external ears smiles shyly. "I'm glad they like our home." The elf covered with white snake scales sneers at this. "They didn't come here to see our huts, Foca. They're probably here to jeer at the freaks!" The dragonborn raises her huge hand and her two thumbs clack together loudly. "That's enough, Regina. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. That being said," Clutch looks levelly at the four PCs she can see (Eozindra, Elowin, Elysia, and Morik). "To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?"
Aug 13, 2024 7:32 pm
"well, I guess they can't help how they are born." remembering what it was like being the only elf child in an orc horde. "but we should still be wary."

With her usual warm grace, Eozindra demurely drops her head towards Regina. "I promise you, there is no ill-will from us. I am, myself, quite familiar with the feelings that come from being gawked at. I have heard plenty of whispers as soon as my back was turned. I would certainly not travel with individuals who were prone to demonstrating hostilities toward strangers purely for their shape or build."

The bard holds her flute in both hands before her chest, letting Elowin finish the explanation of the group’s mission, then adds, "As I said, merely passing through. We would not impose." Looking around the group, Eozindra maintains her cordiality while simultaneously attempting to make her own determination about the potential safety of this place; she knows more than most that looks are deceiving and one shouldn’t judge someone for their appearance alone. She also knows, however, that safety is hard to come by and plenty wolves hide among flocks.

Insight - (1d20+4)

Aug 14, 2024 3:55 pm
As Elowin speaks about their goal, Eozindra watches the group of tieflings very closely. Aside from their random animalistic features, none of them are armed or hold themselves like experienced combatants. They had taken defensive postures that are only slowly relaxing. Of the various tiefling features, only the one dwarf's quills pose any kind of danger. Though Eozindra has seen tieflings exhibit supernatural charm and impressive magical effects in the past, she senses only fear and hope from these strangers...and a little bit of admiration. "...they're so clean!..." Lookout, the little tiefling, murmurs to the tiefling woman, Foca.

Elowin finishes what she is saying, and considers what she knows of tieflings and how they fit into Lunea's directives. As tieflings, their demonic heritage allows them to see in the dark even if their primary race cannot normally.

Ishi notices that none of them are armed; in fact, there don't seem to be any things that could be used as weapons in this squalid little camp made from scavenged materials.

Regina is visibly reassured by Eozindra's statement, but as she starts to respond she begins to hack and wheeze. "This is our home," Foca speaks up as Regina coughs. "We each came down here to live in peace, and not be abused or reviled as different or demonic. Histrik and Clutch have been down here longest; the rest of us have found this refuge since." She cocks her head, most of her wariness gone. Clutch, the big dragonborn tiefling, begins to cough as well. When it becomes clear that she won't take over the narrative, Foca continues. "Yours is not the usual reaction we get." She looks around, and then responds to Eozindra's assertions about her background and traveling companions. "We're glad for your sympathetic words, and you're welcome to pass through."

The others have been staring at the adventurers with admiration this whole time. His mouth moving faster than his brain, young tiefling Digger interjects: "They're all gorgeous!" As soon as the words are out of his mouth, he claps his hands over his mouth. Obviously blushing even in the dim light of the oil lamp, Digger attempts to cover his gaffe. "What I mean to say is that I offer my service to such beautiful ladies!" He makes a clumsy attempt at a courtly bow, and realizes that there are other people in the party (Ishi, Morik, and Adran in the back) than just Elowin, Elysia, and Eozindra, "...and their companions, of course." He remains there for a moment, and then realizes he doesn't know how long you are supposed to stay bowed. He straightens and says "I know the area pretty well. There's all kinds of ruins here; this part of the tunnels is very old. I would be delighted to provide any service you require, like...uh...well, showing you around, I mean. You just need to avoid the Lord Mayor's Men."

As far as you can tell, none of them even suspect that Elysia is right there, still invisible.

Morik watched them all with wary eyes, but their miserable state and their look of wonder showed them to be no threat, and the pitiful way they spoke of being treated softened Morik's stance. He loosened his grip on the staff and looked at the two strange dwarves of the group, nodding at them, and then after a momentary pause, he put away his staff and walked up to them.

"I'm Morik." He walked around to offer his hand to each of them. "You lot look like you could use some good cheer, eh? I got some Goodberries, if you'd like? It's not much, but I me and Jeffery here like em all the same." He tickled the newt's neck. The others could talk about their mission and situation, Morik was more concerned about these people's state of being.

I dropped invisibility on Sia so she wouldn’t pop out as a surprise and upset the group of tieflings. She could lurk back in a shadow or have walked up with the rest of us.
Eozindra indicates her joint interest in knowing of the Lord Mayor’s Men with a nod after Elowin puts the inquiry out. Taking notice of Morik’s proffer of berries, the bard smiles and sweeps a hand in a broad gesture to the group of poor outcasts.

"If it is not unwelcome, perhaps we could rest a time as you tell us of the area. It has been a most trying journey so far and our expedition would benefit greatly from your knowledge and experience." She lifts the flute and wiggles it playfully. "I am happy to repay your kindness with some entertainment."

Finally, she glances to her troupe, knowing they have all been through many exhausting challenges that day. If they are comfortable, perhaps this is a place they could rest and recover before setting out again; additionally, they may get extra knowledge from these unexpected locals if the adventurers are willing to take the time to share a meal with these mistreated but generous souls.
Aug 16, 2024 12:59 am
Elowin asks: "The Lord Mayor's Men? Who are they?"
"You haven't heard of the Lord Mayor?" Lookout says incredulously. They all mutter. Histrik starts to say something about "Must be nice, livin' outside..." but then doubles over, coughing again. A couple of the others make signs to ward off evil, and Manul spits. Tandua explains in his little, squeaky voice. "We're not the only ones that live down here. There's a madman who lives in the ruins just a few tunnels away from here, who thinks he's the rightful heir of the throne or something. He calls himself 'The Lord Mayor,' and he's surrounded himself with a gang of cutthroats, robbers, and snitches. Our tunnel here isn't quite close enough to be on their routes, but the Lord Mayor is constantly sending them on various quests to destabilize Grayhaven, or, failing that, just kill and steal from the wealthy."
OOC:
I'm still working on the other responses. More soon.
Morik offers them some food: "You want some goodberries? Jeffery likes them!" This improves the mood quite a bit, and soon the dwarven druid is surrounded by interested tieflings. The whole group is clearly malnourished, but Lookout, Foca, and Tandua spend just as much time cooing over little Jeffery.

They're even more delighted as Eozindra's offer of entertainment. "By all means," Clutch says, "We'd be delighted to have you join us, though our home be ever so humble. Please, stay as long as you like. Even just news of the outside world would be welcome." Digger clears off a box and bows low: "Milady can sit in my favorite spot!" He looks up at her with lovesick eyes. "If there's anything I can to do help Milady in any way, just ask."

The party settles down to rest, starting with a meal that is shared with the tieflings. As the tieflings chatter with the heroes, Adran pulls out the family meditation chair, sits down, and begins his trance. The descendants of demons are fascinated by the appearance of Adran and Mara, though they keep their distance from the sharp-looking construct, particularly as it seems dormant while Adran is meditating. Instead of stroking the shining metal dog, they content themselves with talking in long meandering conversations about many topics, including the "Lord Mayor" and his "men."

The leader of the den of thieves is a criminal mastermind whose heists are legendary for being inventive, unpredictable, and sometimes even baffling. The ringleader has come and talked to the tieflings in their camp a couple of times, appearing out of nowhere to rant about how he will "reclaim my rightful place as the city's savior!" and rave about the latest haul. "All the gold is secondary - of most importance is all the milk that we stole from the Haversham Manor!" He is a man of intelligence and breeding who has, as he says, "temporarily fallen on hard times" which has required him to take "drastic measures" to keep his "court nobles" entertained in the manner to which they "have been accustomed since birth. That's why I have been selected as Lord Mayor!" Despite his talk of a court, the Lord Mayor's gang consists of ten or twelve murderous ruffians who are happy to do his bidding as long as he keeps them rolling in coin and getting revenge on imagined slights. The tieflings try to stay away from the gang members, as they are far more likely to slit a throat than to reminisce about costumed balls. Thankfully, the Lord Mayor keeps them busy, and at any one time, up to half of the robbers are off preparing for or executing another burglary. Needless to say, the tieflings have set up their refuge in a place that is mostly far enough away from the sewers that the air isn't quite so toxic, but also out of the way enough that they don't get in the way of the Lord Mayor's avaricious killers.
OOC:
If there's more that you want to discuss with the tieflings, you can use the Rest Interludes thread.
After the meal, Morik and the half-elves settle down to sleep, leaving Ishi and Elowin awake with the tieflings to keep watch. Three hours later, Adran emerges from his meditation and rises from the family meditation chair, Mara clicking into motion at his side. With the artificer and his construct available to keep guard, Elowin and Ishi are assured and assume postures of contemplation to begin their trances. Elowin folds gracefully into her family meditation chair, and Ishi is left wondering for a moment: ::am I supposed to have a chair when I meditate? Is that just a tradition of the Galanodel family, or is it just something between these two?:: He begins to get upset with so many questions, and realizes that his meditation will help him to process the conundrum. He sits in a meditative posture and begins.

Three more hours pass. At the start of the eighth hour, Morik, Elysia, and Eozindra awake and begin to gather their belongings and get ready to continue on with Adran and Mara. By the end of the hour, everyone is ready. The cleric's eyes refocus, she smiles from remembered communion with Lunea, and Elowin rises to join the others in saying farewell to their host tieflings.

Eozindra and Elysia, having spent the most time in Grayhaven, search their memories for tales of disgraced or otherwise fallen nobility. There have been various rumors of wealthy merchants and nobles being robbed in mysterious and nonsensical ways, but no fallen nobles that either of them can think of other than Comte Farthingo Elvin Burlingvy Mertrand Camembri d'Regalport IV. Technically it was his great-grandfather, Comte Camembri d'Regalport I, who fell when he abandoned his city of Regalport and fled to Grayhaven to start a new life. It's a fairly well-known story in Grayhaven: milking the tales of his "trials," Comte Camembri d'Regalport I obtained the sympathy of the nobility of Grayhaven and wooed the young Pristina, the only daughter of the royal shipwright, who was himself a commoner but tremendously favored at court and quite wealthy. The Comte married Pristina, somehow genteely avoiding the topic of his first Comtessa, Ynalaria d'Regalport, who may or may not have still been alive. When her shipwright father died, the Comtessa Pristina d'Regalport inherited a great deal of money, and the d'Regalport family has been living like lavishly off of various investments ever since. Though no member of the family has made an attempt to return to Regalport, they've retained the title, living as though they had some authority despite never visiting the lands they are responsible to govern. Generally everyone belittles d'Regalport IV as a useless boil on the neck of Grayhaven.

The idea that the past-his-prime, unmarried, and generally useless Comte Farthingo Elvin Burlingvy Mertrand Camembri d'Regalport IV might have a secret identity as a criminal mastermind had never occurred to anybody before now. Could it be that he is actually the "Lord Mayor" they've just learned about? It couldn't be...could it?

Morik recalls a conversation he had with kar'Javon, in which the knight spoke of strange things that had happened in Grayhaven. In particular, he talked about weird, unsolved crimes, like the robbery of Vaughana Gatherford's mansion, where the thieves didn't take any of the potions they had on hand and left the money alone, but just a few pieces of jewelry and the sourdough starter. "The jewels were heirloom pieces, and their loss was sorely felt, but they say that everyone there lamented the loss of the sourdough, too: apparently the Gatherford family had been making bread from the same batch for generations. They wailed about it like they'd lost a member of their family." The knight had smiled and shaken his head. "I just don't get it. Jewels you can fence pretty easily, but a sourdough starter? You're not going to find a buyer for that. I don't see why it was taken."
