Chapter 5 - Wave Echo Cave

With everyone having taken care of business in Phandalin you meet up with the others and start your journey to Wave Echo Cave. Taking the better part of four hours, the trip through the rather tough terrain is relatively easy, given the fine directions provided by Gundren.

Arriving at the location marked on the map, you struggle to find any sign of an entrance, but after some investigation you get a solid clue. Emanating from the side of a hill you hear what sounds to be waves crashing onto shore and then nothing. After a few minutes of silence the sound repeats and you're able to trace the origin to tunnel, well hidden behind some thickets and other vegetation.

The entrance tunnel leads into a large cavern supported by a natural pillar of rock and containing three stalagmites. In the western part of the cave, behind the column of rock, are three bedrolls and a heap of ordinary supplies — sacks of flour, bags of salt, casks of salted meat, lanterns, flasks of lamp oil, pickaxes, shovels, and other gear. Amid the supplies, you see the body of a dwarf miner, dead for some time.

The northeastern section of the cavern has collapsed, forming a ten-foot-wide, twenty-foot-deep pit. A sturdy hemp rope is tied off around a nearby stalagmite and dangles down the side of the pit, at the bottom of which is a rough-hewn tunnel heading northwest and east.

Gerbo takes a look around and grabs a flask of lantern oil. "Could be useful." Thinking for a bit, he asks, "Anyone got a way to see down there? Otherwise, I'll try to get down there all quiet-like."

"I can naturally see in darker areas. But I have some torches that probably won't be any help either."
Belanor saunters over towards the 'supply cache' setting down his pack he adjusts his gear and clothes. Ensuring the sword is fastened securely and his spell focus is well Belanor takes off a smaller pack that has some of the the essentials.

I'll find someway to make a 'day pack' or small backpack that would have a small blanket, and some other bits that would be necessary for exploring. Crowbar, torches, dungeonerring* kit or whatever I have, etc...

So either Gundren can credit me the backpack, or whatever the price would be. The idea is it's smaller then the big hiking pack.

Upon reuniting with her companions, Kerisha presents them with Qelline's gift.

Would we have had time to attune to the rings yet? Just so I get the AC correct.
Certainly not being one for stealth, Kerisha offers her support to Gerbo in holding the rope secure as he descends.

It would be an easy climb for Gerbo down the rope to the bottom of the pit, but as mentioned, he won't able to see much without a light source.

We'll assume the rings will attune quick to the wearers once they are being worn. I'll roll randomly during the first few encounters to see who has attuned and who hasn't. So for now, mark your AC as if it IS attuned - I'll adjust as needed.

As we travel I tell Kerisha about spying the big black cat with green eyes every now and then, "It’s starting to freak me out a little Dudette."

Upon entering the cave system and spotting his Uncle, Karma move over to him placing a hand on his decaying chest. "My the rocks and nature claim to back this dude as one of their own." He takes a small amount of dirt and a green sticky leaf sprinkling it over the body. He stands, after checking the remains, wiping a tear from his eye. "Let us find these totally bogus dudes that have done this to me Uncle."

Karma walks up to Gerbo placing a hand on his shoulder, "May nature guide you."

Seeing nobody stepping up with any crazy magical l shenanigans, Gerbo grabs hold of the rope and shuffles down to the floor below, looking first with his dark vision, then, if he doesn't see anything, lighting his hooded lantern.

Easily working his way down the rope Gerbo hops down the last few feet, kicking up just a bit of dust when his boots hit the ground. Straining to see anything in the darkness, the gnome fires up his lantern, and peers down each of the two tunnels.

Kerisha hears Karma talk about the green eyed cat and tries to reassure the dwarf "I have put on list. Once done in mine, I will help you with cat"

Once Gerbo is safely down and gives her a signal, Kerisha will descend the rope to offer her protection.

Upon hearing Gerbo’s question on which why to go Karma just shrugs in answer, which being at the top of the drop and in the dark is no use at all. In fact Gerbo may even think the Dwarf rude for giving no answer at all.

But upon descending the rope he simply says to Gerbo, "Belanor’s answer is as good as any I could, unless . . . " Karma brings a hands up to stroke his beard as he examines the floor for tracks or indicators of movement through the caves.

With irrefutable logic leading the group to the left, you find yourselves in an area of numerous intersecting passages. The ceilings here are only six feet high, and several of the passages end in partially excavated rock faces.

The search for tracks turns up absolutely nothing on the floor of note, which Karma finds a little odd. It's almost as if the floors have been cleaned recently.

As opposed to playing "which way now?" at every intersection I had everyone clear out this section of the map. You now have several choices as to how to continue on.

Kerisha squeezes herself down the tight passageways. Not feeling particularly comfortable with lack of air, light or anything natural, she nevertheless enthusiastically approaches every avenue with her handaxe at the ready, expecting danger. After the tenth time of nothingness, the enthusiasm wanes and she's more than happy to let Gerbo pick a direction and falls into line.

The light from Gerbo's lantern throws long shadows against the far wall and to the right of the large cavern at the top of the stairs. Slowly entering the area, you find another set of stairs that lead downward to the east, along with an escarpment that separates this area of the cavern from the next.

With everyone carefully investigating their surroundings it's not long before you notice that the shadows directly to your right seem to be moving about a little too much. Suddenly the shadows start to growl, quickly moving towards you.

The panicked shot skitters off into the darkness, lost from view. He looks to the others to make sure they're with him before making his next move.

A sound similar to that of a thousand cicada’s vibrants from Karma.

Emerging into the slightly more open space gives Kerisha a bit of relief, but the stalking shadows soon change that. As Gerbo releases his bolt she follows it up with a huck of her handaxe into the shadows.

One of the ghouls reaches towards his ear just after Gerbo's bolt flies past, penetrating nothing but the darkness. The creature lets out a growl of annoyance, taking a step forward before it covers both ears with its long, thin hands.

Three other ghouls follow suit, two of which shake their head violently before seemingly working through whatever it was that was bothering them. Two others turn and start trotting off in the other direction, away from Karma and the others.

Kerisha, doing what she does best, goes onto the attack, whipping a hand-axe into the oncoming horde, striking one of undead square in the forehead. The creature's head snaps back, temporarily bringing the ghoul to a stop, before it slowly lifts its head forward and continues moving towards the group.

Belanor has the option to go before the Ghouls this round if he wishes.

Piling on the already injured ghoul Belanor calls forth a spectral, skeletal hand that smacks the creature upside the head, sending Kerisha's embedded hand-axe skipping across the ground. Taking one more step forward, the ghoul collapses to the ground in a heap.

One of the four remaining undead rushes Karma, grabs his arm, and starts to chow down. The Cleric is able to break his arm free of the ghoul's grip, but not before the damage is done.

The other three are drawn towards the Rogue and lash out at him with both teeth and claws. While Gerbo is easily able to duck away from the first two, the third manages to scrape its claws across the back of the Gnome's hand, which immediately start to swell up. Gerbo starts to feel his muscles tighten as he prepares to react, but can't seem to move.

Gerbo is engaged with G5, G6, G7 and has taken 6HP - and has failed his ST and is now Paralyzed. He can make a CON ST v 10 during his turn as his action to be able to move again.

Gerbo feels the claws dig into his skin and the poison coursing through his veins. His muscles clench tightly as he tries and fails to prevent it. His body quickly adjusts and manages to slowly shrug through the poison.

Looking blankly at its now empty hands, Karma's opponent once more reaches out for the Dwarf's arm, mouth agape and ready for seconds... but is unable to grab hold.

Gerbo having recovered from his paralysis goes on the defensive, bobbing and weaving as two of the Ghouls swipe at him with the sickly claws. Unfortunately this gives the third a change to move in from behind and it plants in teeth into the Gnome's shoulder.

Rounding his shield between him and the Ghoul, Karma utters to himself and a flash of green light leaps out from the symbol on it striking all Ghouls Within 5 feet.

As the Ghouls move in a chow down on her companions, a fire builds within Kerisha. The barbarian draws her sword a charges into the fray. Hacking and slashing at the shadows around Gerbo trying to even out the numbers.

Bright, white light envelops Karma, bursting forth as he ends his quick prayer. Several of the Ghouls howl in pain, but none appear to be slowing their attacks until one of the creatures surrounding Gerbo gets smacked by a big ghostly hand.

Its attention no longer focused on the Gnome, it turns just in time to see Kerisha approach and is able to side stumble just out of the path of her giant blade.

Backing his way out of trouble, Gerbo lets a quick bolt fly into the darkness. His two attackers move with him, both doing their best to strike the little rogue but Gerbo proves too elusive. For now...

Karma on the other hand is unable to get his shield into position quick enough to avoid getting scratched deep across his neck. He feels his muscles start to stiffen, but is able to call upon his inner strength to avoid the ghoul's frightening effect.

A weak swipe at Kerisha is all her attacker can manage, and she easily smacks the back of the creature's hand as she swats its dirty claws out of harm's way.

While neither Belanor nor Karma have success with their attacks, Kerisha cuts down her opponent with a devastating attack, slicing clean through the Ghoul who re-dies without so much as a whimper.

Gerbo's plan works to perfection, his wild shot drawing the Ghouls into a false sense of security. They rush towards their prey only to find Kerisha in their way. Taking any opportunity to sink their teeth into flesh, they both open wide for a taste. Easily smacking one of the gaping jaws away, Kerisha is unable to avoid the other's bite as it clenches down on a tendon in her arm.

A weak attempt to dig claws into Karma's neck is easily avoided by the Cleric, who simply leans back out of the way as the swipe passes by.

Taking hits with a great sword and a bit of Litch slapping, the ghoul closest to Kerisha takes a step to the side before falling backwards to the ground.

Karma's hammer connects to the jaw of a ghoul, sending bits of rotten teeth flying across the room. The creature rocks to the side from the momentum of the hit, but quickly rights itself.

The quick footed gnome unleashes a devastating attack on one of the undead, his rapier piercing the ghoul completely through. Darting back behind the cover Kerisha affords, Gerbo is stunned to see that his attack hasn't taken the fight out of ghoul. Staggering forward it still manages a weak swing that Kerisha easily dodges.

Karma's toothless attacker takes a swipe as well but doesn't get past the dwarf's chainmail.

Finding herself in the zone, parrying and dodging the nasty ghouls as she cleaves her way through them, Kerisha offers Gerbo plenty of cover. Trying to put an end to this fight, she raises her sword once more to finish the ghoul.

With a heavy strike that easily cuts through her opponent, Kerisha cuts the remaining ghoul count in half. The last of the undead, being outnumbered four to one, doesn't stand a chance and is quickly dispatched.

The battle over, you have a chance to look about and find yourself in a large cavern that is divided into three sections by steep escarpments. Carved stone stairs climb the ledges. Two large tables stand in the middle section, along with a pair of old braziers. A small table stands on the eastern edge. The skeletal remains of dozens of dead warriors - dwarves, gnomes, orcs, and ogres - attest to the fierceness of the fighting that took place here long ago.

Kerisha, still blind with rage, continues to swing her sword at every moving shadow. Her sword clangs and chips off stone from the walls with every attack, not wanting to be clawed or bitten.

Her sword sticks, and as she yanks it out for another swing the sound of bones clattering makes her pause. An Orc skull rolls across the floor. Looking around she finally realises the battle is over. And this one was finished long ago. A flicker of rage still lingers inside her as Kerisha looks into the empty eye holes of the Orc skull. She dreams of the day of taking down the leader of her tribe, of him succumbing to the same fate as this Orc. And to see it was Dwarves and Gnomes working together to bring them down gives her hope. She has found her new tribe, and she would do anything for them.

It's clear that the skeletons have been here for quite some time - hundreds of year based on the brittleness of the bones and the state of the armor remnants that are scattered about the area. There doesn't appear to be anything of interest or value in the room either.

Finding nothing of interest under the table, Gerbo moves slowly down the northern hallway with Karma at his side. It doesn't take more than a few steps before the halfling notices a dull green glow which appears to be floating in the air off to his left. Inching forward the dim glow of the light reveals that a blast furnace and mechanical bellows powered by a waterwheel dominate this large chamber. The furnace is cold and dark, but heaps of coal are piled nearby, along with carts full of unrefined ore. The waterwheel sits in a ten foot wide channel cut into the floor of the room, but the channel is dry. Passages exit to the west, south, and east. The empty channel exits to the north and east.

More than a dozen withered corpses are scattered around the room. The slain dwarves and orcs are still wearing the remnants of their armor. Floating above them is a skull engulfed in green flame.

"What was that thing?", if no immediate answer is given, he poses the question to the group (still whispering), "What do you all know about floaty flaming skull-type things. He taps his foot as he thinks. Setting down his weapons, he pulls out a clockwork frog. "I do have this. We could try to lead it into an ambush."

With everyone ready and in position, Gerbo sets the plan in motion. First a quick shot from his crossbow strikes the flaming monster in the back, causing a brief intensification of the flame where the bolt cracks into bone. The rogue then releases his hopping, mechanical frog into the room and as it starts to make its way across the ground, several of the bodies of the fallen begin to stir.

Everyone other than Gerbo has a turn, and everyone should roll initiative as well. We'll move into initiative order for the next round.

The Flame Skull turns facing the general direction from where the fired bolt came, he floats slowly forward, scanning for the perpetrator. Four of the bodies lift themselves into a standing position and start lumbering after the mechanical frog; clearly fascinated by the metal creature. Four other start to follow slowly behind the flaming skull towards the group.

While four of the long-dead occupy their time toying with a mechanical frog, the others follow the flaming skull of flames closer to the group. Once within striking distance Kerisha jumps into action, her great sword swinging in a huge arc, smashing right into the face of the skull. It lets out screech as the momentum of the blade knocks it back several feet.

The skull shakes in mid-air, producing three tiny skulls which streak towards the barbarian, striking her in quick succession. Quickly following up, the four undead each pick a target and move in to attack. While Karma, Gerbo, and Belanor are able to avoid their attackers, Kerisha isn't as lucky.

On the other side of the room, the four other creatures catch the frog and throw it to the ground. As they turn to move towards the others, a loud catlike hiss catches their attention.

Her excitement causes Kerisha to be sloppy. She may have connected with the skull but she left her defences wide open for retaliation. She is fuming at herself and uses that to fuel her next attack, swinging wildly at the skull.

The flamey skull of flames spins in place from the attack and several of its burning teeth fly through the air, leaving small trails of smoke along their path before they clatter onto the ground. The skull's jaw hangs loosely to one side and it appears to be having difficulty remaining afloat.

With a quick thrust, Gerbo pierces the skull through its base and then follows up with a quick crossbow attack which shatters the skull of flameyness into pieces which rain down onto the floor.

Unaffected by the Cleric's prayer, the zombies once again move in. Both Kerisha and Karma easily avoid the clumsy attacks thrown their way, while Belanor's panicked attack throws off his attacker's attempt as he manages to slice the creature deep in the arm with his short sword.

The usually nimble Gerbo is caught flat footed and a Zombie lands a grazing blow across the top of the Rogue's head; which causes more embarrassment than actual harm.

On the other side of the room the hissing, growling, and spitting continues...

Buoyed up by the shattering of the flaming skull, Kerisha tries to swiftly dispatch the foe in front of her so she can get her hands on a piece of flaming cranium. But her mind is clearly on unnecessary accessorising as she wildly misses her target.

In one fluid motion, Gerbo ducks under his zombie and runs to attack the one engaged with Kerisha, hooking his crossbow back onto his belt as he goes.
He giggles uncontrollably for a bit after seeing the sword find its mark. "Keep 'em distracted and I'll do the pokey bit! Hahaha!" He cackles again, forgetting his fear for a moment.

With a quick and brutal pokey, Gerbo strikes down one of the four Zombie attackers. The other three relentlessly continue to pound away, with the Rogue's former attacker now turning its attention to Kerisha, catching her completely off guard with a wallop to the side of her head. Karma is able to absorb his attacker's punch without any harm, but Belanor is not as lucky, catching a Zombie fist right to the face.

On the other side of the room a loud, anguished cry seems to mark the end of the fighting, and four more figures start to lumber in your direction.

Kerisha's well placed axe splits the lead Zombie's head wide open. Such a brutal wound would obviously be the undoing of any normal monster, but the Zombie simply moans and continues forward. As they get closer the wounds from their previous battle become obvious as each of the four show fresh claw and bite marks on their limbs and chests.

Adjusting his swing at the very last moment, Karma smashes his hammer into the side of one of the approaching zombies. Unfazed it raises its arm to attack only to be struck down by a bolt of fire from Belanor. The three remaining creatures move forward allowing Gerbo to lash out, piercing an unsuspecting Zombie through the abdomen and sending it crumbling to the ground.

Finding that his newly patented "cower-style" fighting technique is paying dividends, Belanor once again sends a fire bolt off in the general direction of one of the approaching undead. One of the zombie lets out a high-pitched moan after being struck in the neck before it becomes fully engulfed in flames and falls to the ground.

Rushing the last remaining creature Karma brings his hammer around and smashes into the zombie's rib cage. Rib's crack as the zombie leans to its side, but it remains on its feet, raising its arm to strike.

Gerbo's flying, stab 'em in the neck attack works to perfection. The rapier pierces clean through the undead's neck and out its spine. Without a sound it falls to the ground in a heap. With the immediate threat dispatched you are able to take in more of the room and can see there are several exits that could be explored.

A loud purr from across the room breaks the silence. A large, clearly injured, black cat limps forward out of the shadows towards Karma.

Kerisha collapses to a knee. Breathing heavy with blood leaking form several places, she has to lean on her sword to steady herself. The flaming remnants of the skull lie scattered around. She crawls to find two suitable pieces to attach to her armor later, once she is patched up. Her eyes then shift to the large cat, recalling what Karma had said to her before and assuming a friendly nature to the beast, she pushes herself up and helps the beast over to the safety of the group.

Gerbo rubs some phlegm from the zombie he recently dispatched on a rag one of the zombies had on, making a face as he does so. "Bugger must have been sick." He looks a bit for any recoverable crossbow bolts and reloads it quickly, preparing for the next possible enemies. "What's the cat want?"

Karma’s eyes widen a little as the inky black cat limps out of the shadows, taken back a little to see it’s wounds as such a powerful beast he thought would be impossible to bring down. "The talking cat with glowing green eyes from my communion! Macska dude your hurt, yeah Kerisha help."
Karma puts his shield and hammer away while quickly approaching the pair, handing Kerisha a few healing potions he gives a quick prayer before doing an examination of Macska.

As Karma starts to examine Macska, the large cat closes its eyes and begins to purr loudly. The wounds that cover his body slowly start to heal and within a few seconds are almost undetectable. His eyes open wide.

"Your friend needs more attention than I." he says out loud in Common, for all to hear. "She appears to have been quite injured during battle."

Karma's examination doesn't turn up anything of particular interest, other than the obvious channel that bisects the room. Being only five foot deep it is easy to climb in and out. It doesn't appear that there has been any water running through it in quite some time.

"I do not know where the Drow stay within these ruins. My attempts to locate him have always been thwarted by the large bugbears he uses as guards. I do know that in the cavern which this channel empties into there are three bugbears hard at work, with yet another Drow who appears to be overseeing them."

He walks over and jumps into the channel.

"If you are quiet you can see them working around the corner. There is something quite odd about the Drow there though, I can't quite figure it out."

Sneaking along the channel you come to edge of wide, deep rift in the floor that fills the eastern half of a large cavern. A stream pours out of the west wall, then tumbles into the rift and flows out again to the north. Several ropes are secured to iron stakes along the western edge of the rift, leading down to the chasm floor.

As Macska had stated, a male Drow and three bugbears are in the cavern. Two of the bugbears are at the bottom of the rift, twenty feet below, clearing rocks from the stream, while the third is having a quiet conversation with the Drow near the northern most steps along the west wall.

Gerbo rubs his chin, fiddling with his belt buckle with his other hand. He whispers to the others to try to accentuate the need for quiet. "Yeah. Could work better that way. Let's go. I think I saw a door back there."

When they arrive, he'll check the door and surrounding area for traps, before having a go at the lock.

The door swings inward just a fraction of an inch but moves no further. Gerbo can hear a muffled grunt and something scrapping across the floor behind the door as it slams back shut. It's obvious that the door has been barricaded, and whatever is on the other side has no intentions of letting anyone in.

Kerisha cracks her knuckles, then her neck as she steps forwards. Adopting a low stance, not wanting to be shot, stabbed or skewered by whatever is on the other side, she readies her door bashing shoulder. Its still a little tender, and a more sensible person would use the other shoulder, or a boot, but Kerisha sticks with her tried and tested method. Karma pats her on the shoulder to signal the go, and she feels a wave of positive energy flow through her as she drives forwards.

The force of Kerisha bashing into the door pushes it forward no further than Gerbo's previous attempt. Once again a muffled grunt is followed by the sound of something scrapping across the floor before the door is slammed shut.

Within a few seconds you can hear the sounds of multiple large creatures sliding heavy objects across the floor on the other side of the door.

"What is your name, Sister?" the voice calls out to Kerisha from behind the door.

She feels slightly disgusted at herself offering to help, but any information she can get will help the group later, and if they can avoid walking into an ambush, that would be ideal.

The door opens, revealing a rather large bugbear, with three others moving large crates about the room. His shocked face reveals he was not expecting to see your group on the other side of the door.

"WHO ARE YOU?" he yells loud enough to gain the attention of the other three in the room, who stop what they're doing and watch on.

Kerisha's face almost mimics the shocked large bugbear, after all she had just introduced herself. "Kerisha" she says again, before pointing to each of her group in turn; "Karma. Gerbo. Belanor. Macska."

Kerisha peers into the room, leaning to look around the large frame of the bugbear. "Where is Black Spider?" She tires to think on her feet, which although they are rather large, are not used to being thought on. "we um...heard mine is good and um... may have job here." Not a lie as she definitely remembers Gundren offering them a job in the mine, the bugbear just doesn't need to know where the job offer came from. "Wanted to see who was in charge." She adds a toothy grin for good measure.

It's obvious from the bugbear's expression when Macska is introduced that he recognizes him.

"Damned cat!" he growls, reaching for the blood covered morningstar that hangs from his belt.

"Kill them! They are friends of the cat!"

He steps forward, but before he can unhook his weapon his matted-fur covered hands reach for his ears and he lets out a painful scream. He spins on his heels and starts to run to the opposite exit. This display is enough to cause the other three bugbears in the room a moment of pause before they gather up their courage and start moving towards Kerisha.

Karma has taken his action for the 'surprise' round, so everyone else gets a turn before we head into actual initiative order combat.

Kerisha can use a Reaction to attack the fleeing Bugbear and still take a turn.

The bugbears do their best to shield their eyes as a blinding array of colors shoot forth from Gerbo's hand. Two of three manage to look away before any harm can be done, but the smallest of the three isn't so lucky, and comes to a complete stop and extends his hands in front of him, trying to feel his way about.

Feeling its way about the room, the blind bugbear screeches in pain when Gerbo's crossbow bolt strikes its thigh. It grasps the bolt and yanks it out, throwing it to the ground. The bugbear's unpredictable movements are enough to throw off Belanor's aim, and his Litch Slap misses its mark by quite some distance.

The bugbear who had been running in fear gathers its senses and commands one of the other creatures in the room to "kill that orc!". Without hesitation, a bugbear rushes forward and takes a wild swing with its morningstar that misses the Barbarian by mere inches.

The blind bugbear can hear Karma's lovely singing voice as the dwarf approaches and tries to move away, but isn't quite quick enough. The flat of the cleric's hammer smashes into the bugbear's face, who takes a step backwards, and is barely able to keep on its feet.

Gerbo's shoot and scoot approach works to perfection as his crossbow bolt cracks into the blind bugbear's skull. The creature lets out a horrible screech as it reaches for its forehead before finally crumbling to the ground.

The bolt of fire unleashed from Belanor zips across the room, striking the wall just over one of the bugbear's shoulders. Enraged, it rushes forward, looking for blood, and swings its morningstar hard into Karma's side. A solid hit that is absorbed by the dwarf's armor, who feels a tinge of pain, but quickly shakes it off.

Easily sidestepping her opponent's clumsy attack, Kerisha is poised to strike...

Belanor and Gerbo concentrate their attacks on the same foe, knocking one of Kerisha's opponents back a step from the combined assault. Reeling in pain, the creature is determined to make someone... anyone pay! He brings his morning star crashing down onto Kerisha's forearm and while it doesn't cause too much damage, she will certainly be feeling it after the battle.

Continuing his weak assault on the Cleric, the bugbear once agains wiffs on its attack, leaving Karma with a decent opening for his next attack.

Kerisha almost drops her sword after taking the blow to the arm. it certainly stung, but she shakes it off for now. Hearing Gerbo's cackle, in her rage, Kerisha believes it is at her. She lets out a growl of anger and swings wildly at the weakened bugbear. Finally connecting with solid flesh, she feels the blade carve deeply into its target, making the pain in her arm feel slightly less.

Still grimacing from the hammer strike to its chest, Karma's opponent swings its morning star in a desperate attempt to end the fight. The full blow of the strike knocks the wind from the Cleric's lungs but to the bugbear's astonishment doesn't take him out of the contest.

Kerisha breathes in the scent of the bugbears blood. The metallic tang fills her nostrils and fuels her rage. Sensing the end is near she cleaves her great sword once more, but narrowly misses her bleeding target. Her aim affected by the loss of her own blood to this point.

His fears become reality when he sees the shot fly wide. Ducking behind the door again, he reloads and tries to pretend nothing happened.

Seeing her friend and nature guru go down, Kerisha lets out a rage filled roar. She puts her own pain to the back of her mind and lunges into her foe. She plunges her sword deep into the gut of the bugbear. The fight in its eyes drains away and she kicks its limp body from her sword. Without a second thought, she sets off after the fleeing bugbear, adrenaline and bloodlust covering any wounds she may have.

I'm assuming the bugbear goes down after that lol.

Trying to catch up with the fleeing bugbear to engage it and stop it getting away if possible with movment.

Grunting in pain when Belanor's magical bolt strikes him between the shoulder blades, the last bugbears sprawls forward onto the ground, takes a few labored breaths, and finally stops moving altogether.

Implementing his own unique style to help his friend, Gerbo is able to help slow the blood flow from Karma's wound. The unconscious cleric's breathing starts to settle into a more stable rhythm as the color returns to his face.

Macska slinks out of the shadows and curls up next to Karma purring loudly as he does, his eyes on the door at the far side of the room.

The forest canopy opens and light pours in warming Karma and filling him with positive mojo, though curiously a small Gnome runs amongst the trees beckoning to him. Oddly as he follows the Gnome a loud purring sounds starts vibrating in his ears.

With the fight over and the bloodlust fading, Kerisha begins to feel her aches and pains. She slows from her pursuit and stumbles to a halt by the door the bugbear was running towards. The barbarian collapses down to the ground with her back against the door, half to try and block it from opening, and half to prop herself up whilst she catches her breath.

Gerbo rummages around in Karma's bag until he finds a large bottle. Reading it for a bit, he turns Karma's head, so his face is no longer in the dirt. Opening the bottle carefully, he dips in his finger and rubs it on the dwarf's gums. After this, he pulls his beard and waits to see if he wakes up.

For the record, DM, I'm not trying to game the system or something and use "partial potions". Just trying to flavor something other than "dump the whole thing down his sleeping gullet". If/when he wakes up, he can have the rest.

As he follows the Gnome Karma starts realising that it is Gerbo that he is following and the woods start fading away.

His eyes flicker open and his body is sore all over, especially his head. He looks up at Gerbo, "Dude I just dreamed of you," a smile forming on his lips, "you had a real positive shine to your aura." Karma slowly sits up, taking the healing potion and drinking it down.

Once on his feet Karma walks around the room checking on everyone else.

Gerbo rolls his eyes at Karma's comment about the positive aura and walks over to a wall, leaning his back against the wall as he slides to a seated position. His head tilts back until it gently stops against the cold, damp wall. Closing his eyes for just a moment, he sighs and pulls out a tiny wrench. He begins to tighten up some of the bolts on his hand crossbow.

Seeing one of his bolts sticking out of a nearby bug bear, he reaches over and yanks it out, wiping some blood on the bugbear's armor.

Picking them up, Kerisha wishes she hadn't, now her fingers are all sticky. She wipes her hand on the cloths of the bugbear, then swiftly follows Karma out of the room and onwards

Slowing following the sounds of hissing, Karma comes to a tee in the hallway, to his left the hallway continues for another thirty feet or so, while to his right is a room the group had discovered earlier, but had not entered.

In this room, Macska is doing his best to terrorize a male Drow, quickly slashing at the man's legs before darting off for cover. Standing just outside the rift that divides the room are two bugbears, who appear to be thoroughly amused by the frustrated reactions of the Drow.

Macska glances briefly at Karma and nods his head before hissing and launching into another attack...

While everyone prepares themselves for battle, Macska continues to toy with the Drow, darting back and forth, never once appearing to be in any sort of danger. The dark elf's attempts to thwart the ongoing harassment seem surprisingly clumsy given what one would expect from a race known for it grace in movement.

What was once mild amusement for the two onlooking bugbears, now turns into hilarious entertainment, as both start to openingly laugh at the display.

Snapping out of her fantasy of prowling the wilds with Macska, Kerisha realises its about to go down and jumps into action. Feeling the positive energy, she takes out a hand axe and flips it in the air before catching it and lobbing it over at the chuckling bugbear, who makes an easy target. Maybe she has been going about this angry barbarian thing all wrong? Maybe the positive energy and good vibes mean she is more deadly?

The bugbear's laughter ceases immediately when the unmistakable sounds of a bolt whizzing close by grabs his attention. His head snaps around towards the source of the attack only to have Kerisha's axe plant itself into its forehead. He screams out in pain, yanks the axe from its head, and tosses it to the ground.

The Drow, even tough distracted by Macska, catches a glimpse of Karma on the charge and deftly sidesteps the attack.

"Another damned dwarf!"

With his attention on both Macska and Karma, the Drow makes an extremely easy target, and Gerbo takes full advantage. The bolt from the Gnome's attack rips through dark elf's right cheek and exits out the other, taking several teeth and chunks of jaw with it.

With its vision slowly darkening the Drow shakes its head violently from side to side and is able to ward off the effects of the dwarf's spell. It growls and throws two very heavy punches it quick succession at Karma's head. While he is able to duck one of the punches, the second lands hard on the side of the cleric's head.

Kerisha steps past Gerbo, providing the perfect cover for the little gnome. She locks eyes with the bugbear, a slight smile at the blood slowing dripping down its face from the axe wound. She takes out a javelin and feels the weight of in her hands. Finding its balance point, she swiftly slings it towards the centre mass of the bugbear. The muscles in her arm ripple with the force behind the throw. A dull thud followed by another scream of pain as the javelin buries deeply into the bugbears shoulder.

Ducking back after the spell Belanor thought himself pleased with the idea and plan. Letting the others rush past he thinks we'll of himself for doing a good job and the idea of not having to do combat.
He peeks out of the doorway after hearing more sounds of battle then he thought necessary. Seeing the other bug bear up fills him with doubt and fear.

Seething with anger the bugbear's eyes narrow on its target as it rushes forward towards Kerisha, with the end of the stuck javelin bouncing violently as it does. The head of the creature's morning star glances off of the barbarian's hip, and while it stings, Kerisha is easily able to brush off the pain.

In his eagerness to duck behind his companion for cover, Gerbo rushes his shot and his bolt whizzes harmlessly past the bugbear.

Karma's hammer crunches into the Drow's ribs, who exhales loudly in pain. It raises its fist to strike and then suddenly pauses, his eyes study his attacker closely before a sly smile crosses its lips. Taking a step back, the dark skinned elf slowly morphs into an almost perfect replica of the Cleric, right down the braided beard. It yells out in a voice identical to Karma's.

"Shapeshifter! The Drow is a shapeshifter!" and starts to furiously point at Karma.

"Kill it!"

The bugbear winces in pain as Kerisha pulls the deeply embedded weapon from his flesh. He instinctively reaches for his shoulder, but before his arm has a chance to move, the Barbarian replants the javelin deep between his ribs, puncturing one of his lungs. He starts to raise his weapon to retaliate when Belanor's fire bolt whizzes by. Realizing he's in a tight spot, and hoping for support, he starts to move over to the bugbear asleep on the floor.

"Wake Up!"

She pulls out the javelin and forcefully reinserts it into the bugbears back.

Before the bugbear realizes what's happened, Kerisha once again pulls the impaled javelin from the creature's body and thrusts it deep into its back. It groans in pain and falls to its knees but, despite the dire situation, continues to crawl towards his sleeping companion.

"Wake.... up...."
With a song in his heart, and a weapon in his hand, Karma brings his hammer around, but only manages to skim it off his clone's armor. Evil Karma responds with a heavy fist right to cleric's jaw - hard enough to sting a bit, but not hard enough to stop the singing.

Gerbo doesn't get a direct answer to his query, but when he sees one of the dwarves swing a hammer while assaulting everyones ears with a rendition of an old favorite from the traveling Bards troupe The Aarakocras, the rogue has no doubt in his mind which of the two is Karma.

Kerisha calmly walks around the crawling bugbear so she is between it and the sleeping foe. The bugbear is showing great resilience in the face of death. She feels a touch of sorrow for the stricken enemy as she grips the javelin once more. She can't quite bring herself to drive it home against the defenceless foe.

Watching as both Kerisha and Gerbo somehow miss the slowly crawling bugbear, Belanor quickly lobs a firey bolt in its direction, striking the pathetic creature right in the ass. Without a sound it stops and rolls to his side.

Karma's hammer strikes the used-to-be-drow square in the side of the ribs, but the attack has little effect and fake-Karma starts to smile.

"Is that all..." he starts, before a crossbow bolt rips through his face. With just the slightest whimper, fake-Karma falls to the ground, and the creature's body slowly morphs into a grey skinned, featureless figure.

With the immediate threats neutralized, you look about the room and notice that Macska is no where to be found.

A wide rift fills the eastern half of this cavern. A stream pours out of the east wall, then tumbles down into the rift and flows out again to the north. Several ropes are secured to iron stakes along the western edge of the rift, leading down to the chasm floor.

While Belanor may have never seen a Doppelgänger before, at least that he knows of, he is well aware of what they are. This one, unfortunately, has nothing of interest on him.

As the illusionary Gerbo struts into the room without a care in the world, you can hear the excited chittering of the giant spiders itching to attack.

"Not yet, my pets. All in good time." calls out a calm, deep voice.

From the shadows emerges a dark elf clad in black leather armor and long flowing robes. He clutches a black staff with a carved spider at the top and slowly approaches the illusion before performing a well practiced, flourishing bow.

"Ah yes, 'Drow Things', doppelgängers impersonating Drow. A nauseating thought, but useful for my plans. I should thank you and your friends for terminating them for me."

He pauses for moment to look past shadow Gerbo and into the hallway.

"Speaking of which. Where are the others?"

Karma rushes forward, managing to avoid the giant spiders, and finds himself standing directly next to the prone Drow. The dark elf's eyes widen in fear, but he just can't seem to stop laughing long enough to act.

Almost instantaneously after having Kerisha's great sword slice into its body the giant spider instinctively fires a poorly aimed blast of webbing towards to raging barbarian, which splats harmlessly against a wall.

Struck right in between its multiple eyes, the giant spider sparring with Kerisha lets out a horrendous screech, wobbles a bit to its left, and finally crumples to the ground.

Scurrying towards its laughing master, one of the giant spiders opens its pincers, readying to chomp on a tasty dwarf. Suddenly it has a change of demeanor, moves right past Karma and climbs half way up a pillar where it simply watches the unfolding scuffle.

A second spider, just poking out from behind cover, is greeted with a bolt of fire to its abdomen. It screeches in pain from the direct hit and the hair around the impact starts to smolder, filling the room with a sickly sweet small.

The last of the remaining spiders comes into view with Macska trapped in its bite. It swings its head, throwing the large cat across the floor. Undeterred, the temple cat runs back into the fray, teeth and claws leading the way.

Kerisha hears the screech from Macska as it is flung across the floor. Her rage goes up a notch as she charges at the offending spider, driving the tip of her blade towards its centre mass. But the spider nimbly avoids the rage filled attack, and her sword clinks off the stone floor.

The sparks that fly from the ground as a result of Kerisha's brutal attack on the floor catch the attention of a different spider who skitters up and bites the barbarian on the back of her thigh. She can feel the venom start to burn in her veins but her adrenaline keeps the pain to a minimum.

Twisting his face into a scowl, the Drow glares at Karma and manages to hiss, "I WILL KILL..." before he is once again overcome with laughter.

"And then, and then the bartender says, 'To be Frank, I'd have to change my naaaammeeee'" he blurts, rolling on the ground as if it's the funniest thing he's ever heard.

If getting sliced through the head with a crossbow bolt wasn't bad enough, the giant spider fighting with Macska finds itself immersed in a cloud of fleas. It scatters off away from its attackers only to drop dead in place, the thousands of biting fleas too much for it to take.

With his attacker taken care of, Macska launches himself at the closest spider, raking his claws across the beast's face.

Firing a shot, then drawing his rapier, Gerbo rushes over, "The jokes were good, though, right?" He says as he stabs his rapier at the Drow.

"Not a bad trick, little one." he growls.

Before he can finish his thought a spectral hand appears and backhands him across the face.

"THAT'S IT!!"
In the far corner of the room, Macska is stalking the charmed spider, ready to pounce if need be.

Kerisha's head swivels looking for her next target. Hearing the loud slap draws her attention to the Drow. She tightens her grip on the sword and drives towards the Drow, putting herself between him and her friends before driving her sword towards his chest. Another clink echoes around as the tip of the sword chips more rock form the ground.

The mage hand sweeps across the room as directed by Gerbo but does not make any indication of smacking up again the invisible dark elf. Karma's own attempt at discovering the elf's location also fails, as the Drow is well versed in the game, and knows that since the caller is not in a pool, he does not have to respond.

Macska continues to stalk the charmed spider, seemingly unaware of status of the Drow.

Kerisha's swing into the nothingness pays dividends. The once invisible Drow suddenly appears; now sporting a fresh, bloodied slash across the front of his leather armor.

"Vile beast!" he spits, just before Belanor springs his trap, letting loose with a bolt of fire that hits the Drow in the side of the head, singeing his pristine white hair.

"The gods be damned! ENOUGH!!"

He raises his hand and points at Kerisha. Four purple, glowing hour glasses appear and one after another, smash into the barbarian.

The insect begins to glow lightly and makes a b-line for the Drow, landing upon the cranky magic user it bites deeply. Darkness slowly attempts to invade the sight of the Black Spider . . .

The blinded Drow, hearing Belanor's words realizes that any more violence would not work out in his benefit. He slowly kneels to the ground and raises his hands in the air, cursing in his native tongue as he does.

Gerbo steps up to bind the Drow's hands behind his back. When that is complete, he will try to cut a piece of cloth from the Drow's clothing and gag him. After this is done, he will cover the Drow's ears and speak to his compatriots.

"So, what now? We can't carry this one with us through here. They could get free. Do we bring them back to town or knock their brain askew while we finish the job?"

Karma beams under his heavy beard quite chuffed at his spell working, he gives a little jig before turning to see what the spider is doing. He quickly searches amongst he belongings and draws out a funny looking, fat paper flute. He lights the end and sucks in some smoke from it, holding the smoke for a long moment before releasing it. A clicking, chattering noise can be heard as he does so . . .

"Hey dude spider can you do me a favour please, and lead us on the shortest way out of here?"

Kerisha, still in her rage, swings her sword into the rocks, chipping off another piece of stone as the Drow surrenders.

Her breathing slows and her grip loosens. Stowing her weapon she hoists the bound Drow up onto her shoulder like sack, ready to carry the big lump out.

The giant spider clicks in response to Karma's request and slowly leads the way. Being a spider it doesn't think twice about scaling the gorge in the next room, even hopping gracefully over the stream that runs through the room. While it's a bit of struggle to follow, you all manage, the spider waiting on the other side of the gorge patiently as you go about the task.

Once out of the gorge the spider continues down the canal that works the wheel in the smelter bellows and out of the cave to a shoreline where waves crash along the shore. Seemingly happy to be out in the open the spider quickly scurries up the sides of the cliffs and out of sight.

Sorry for the delay - more work stuff. Bad news is that it is likely to continue. Good news, I have a new job lined up where I can keep to a reasonable schedule!!

With her uncanny mental mapping ability, Kerisha is fairly certain she can lead the group to the front entrance without a problem.

"I will do my best to scout ahead to help you leave this place. With the removal of the Drow and most of the undead, the dwarves that lie here may finally get to rest." Macska says while licking his front paw, watching as a spectral hand struggles to scratch away at the bedrock along the shore.

"You'll need more powerful magic if you wish to dig into the rock. Even after being exposed to the waves for millennia, the shore line appears to have been barely worn."

Between Kerisha and Macska, it would be easy enough to find the quickest path out of the cave. If that's the way you all would like to proceed I'll have all of you roll stealth (assuming you're not looking for conflict) and we'll be on the way.

And there were mining supplies at the front of the cave, including pick axes and the like.

Macska turns to look at the Drow Kerisha has unceremoniously draped over her shoulder.

"While one evil has been removed from this place, I fear the undead threat still remains, so I suggest we proceed with caution. I will scout ahead periodically and let you know when it is safe to continue."

With that, the large black cat moves forward, seemingly swallowed up by the shadows, only for him to reappear a short time later to urge the group ahead.

This process repeats several times until Macska stops the group just before entering the large cavern where you had discovered the body of Karma's uncle, Tharden.

"There is a lone dwarf in the room ahead, burying the corpse of another." Macska says quietly, looking for guidance on how to proceed.

Gundren watches as Kerisha casually dumps the Drow onto the ground. The dwarf's face reddens with anger as his grip tightens around the handle of the shovel. He takes a step forward, raising the tool into the air ready to strike, but before bringing it down in force on the tied up prisoner he stops.

"A quick death is too good for this bastard!! Take him back to Phandalin and let Sildar at 'im - the damned Drow will be begging for death by the time he's through."

The old dwarf nods and returns to the solemn business of burying his brother.

"When we open this cave up for business, we'll turn this into a proper shrine for Tharden and the others of our kind who have died here."

Karma moves to stop his Uncle from striking the Drow, and is relieved when he stops. "Excellent choice Uncle, best not to stain our hands as it will ruin the vibe." Karma then places his shield down and helps dig.

Even with the occasional outburst from your Drow prisoner, the trip back through the rough terrain to Phandalin is rather uneventful, boring even; with the lone exception of a few quickly dispatched kobolds who mistakenly thought you would make an easy target. And while Macska makes several appearances along the way, by the time you reach the outskirts of Phandalin your feline friend is no where to be seen.

Unsurprisingly, Carp is the first to greet you as your enter town. Jumping out from behind a tree he calls out to "Kreesha", and bombards her incessantly with questions about the groups latest adventure and the strange dark elf draped over her shoulder. It isn't long before other townsfolk start to surround the group, including Sildar, who immediately takes the Drow into custody, and has him ushered off to the cells in the Town Master's Hall. The residents of Phandalin are, for the first time in a long while, excited about their future and the prosperity that the re-discovered mines may bring to their little town.
The next few days are a blur of activity, with townsfolk eager to hear your stories, and supplying an endless supply of ale and hospitality. When things finally start to settle down, Gundren takes all of you aside and formally makes good on his offer, providing each of you with a contract that clearly states a five percent payout of any profits made from the mine once it's operational.

Karma is offered a job helping to run things at the mine, "side by side with your kin, if that interests you, my boy." Over the next few weeks he spends his time talking in detail with Sister Garaele at the Temple of Tymora about both the stone work of the shrine itself and nature in general.

Gerbo, to his surprise, is approached by Sildar to help protect the businesses of Phandalin from the expected newcomers that will certainly be coming to take advantage of the cities newfound wealth - and is offered free reign to "swindle the swindlers in any manner you see fit to keep them from ever coming back."

Belanor, much more comfortable dealing with coin than with battle, strikes several deals with the local taverns to exclusively serve Omega Aleworks products. Those few deals alone allow him to quickly rise in the ranks of his guild; with several of his competitors within the guild, now assigned to work for him; much to their disdain.

Kerisha finds the peacefulness of Alderleaf Farm a nice break from her recent activities, but at the same time is eager to prove herself to those who cast her out of the Broken Claw Horde. Qelline suggests that instead of worrying about those that have cast her aside, that she may be able to do more good with her friend Reidoth, a fellow member of the Emerald Enclave, but that no matter what she chose to do, Kerisha would alway be welcome in the Alderleaf home.

And that's a wrap! Once again, thanks to all of you for sticking with this over the past 2+ years. I've had a lot of fun running this adventure, and look forward to running something else on here when things at work settle down a bit.
