Chapter 2: The Gorgon Queen's Lair

Jun 13, 2024 2:18 pm
After about half an hour, just after sunset, you make your way to where the stones take you. Using the stones, you decipher how to get in and make your way inside. Natural cave flow soon give way to pristine floors made for royalty. You might think Hythonia thinks very highly of herself as she seems to like lavish things. The entryway leads to a open area with a fountain in the center. Adorning the fountain are small stone snakes that spit water out of their mouths to keep the fountain flowing. To your left and right are small passageways that seem to lead to natural cave again. Ahead of you is a natural floor, but one that seems man altered to be more smooth and flat and less jaggid like stone tends to naturally be. On the far side is a bridge that appears to go over some flowing water. Lining the area past the fountain are statues of warriors. Based on their poses, it is clear they were living warriors that were turned to stone an unknown amount of time ago. A thought passes through your minds. You each have a potion that reverses petrification. You may need it for an ally later on, but perhaps you could use it on one of these statues to save a warrior who could help in battle, or at the least if you defeat hythonia you might use it on one of them as you leave.

What do you do?

How high are the ceilings
Jun 13, 2024 3:56 pm
About 10 feet initially, 15 feet once you get to the area with the statues

Kelnes is going to look at the statues carefully. Trying to figure out patterns on which direction they might be looking or any patterns in how they were stopped.

Once the heroes entered the hall of statues, Omeros called on divine power once more.

θωράκιση κρύος

An armour of frost crystallized around the satyr. Once shielded, Omeros accessed a reserve of energy in his rod, and he looked around the hall for any lurking threats or anything generally odd.

OOC:
Ok, so I have Chironides is on the ceiling, Kelnes regained a 3rd level spell slot, Omeros is casting armor of Agathys (and looks around and doesn't see anything not already obvious), and Isaiah casts pass without trace.

Isaiah suggests checking the left and right passages, but I don't hear any definitive "we more forward" or "we go check the left/right passage". What is the official next course of action?
Jun 14, 2024 3:05 pm
A well armored Chironides takes point "Follow me" and takes to the left passage
Jun 14, 2024 3:50 pm
You walk down the hallway that is just wide enough for you to walk 2x2. You find a dark cave, but with the light from the previous rooms bouncing off the walls, you can make out a hole in the ground surrounded by a ring of symbols. There isn't enough light to see in the hole. To see what is inside, you will need a light source and to stand at the edge of the hole.
OOC:
Map has been updated.

Omeros held up a hand for the others to stop as they neared the pit. Making sure he remained in the cloaking field, he edged to the edge and peered into the abyss.
OOC:

Jun 14, 2024 6:40 pm
About 60 feet down you see what looks to be a skeletal arm from the elbow down holding some kind of bottle. However, the arm is surrounded by dozens upon dozens of snakes.
Jun 14, 2024 6:50 pm
At the mention of snakes Chiron drinks an antitoxin.
Jun 14, 2024 6:54 pm
"Anyone recognize those symbols"
Jun 14, 2024 6:58 pm
I will let 1 person make a DC 20 History check. On a 10, you'll still get something, but not much.
Jun 14, 2024 10:48 pm
After relaying what he saw, Omeros followed his hooved companion in downing antitoxin.

"Dare we try to retrieve that bottle?" Omeros whispered.
Jun 14, 2024 11:06 pm
"Perhaps one of you possess magics that can retrieve that vial from a distance?"
OOC:

"Aye, brother. Once we get some idea what those glyphs are, I'm ready."

OOC:
Isaiah not an educated person. I pass on history check. Can do guidance though. If DM allows for this roll.
Isaiah waits patiently
Jun 15, 2024 12:14 pm
OOC:
guidance is fine to cast. It just needs to be declared before the role and it can't be for something that you wouldn't have time to give them guidance for suddenly. In this case, since someone will need to take a minute to study the symbols, there would be time to tap their shoulder before they finish. If it was a scenario where you heard a name and someone asked if they knew them, that would be too sudden to guide them unless you had done so before even hearing the name.

Kelnes cats Divine Sense as he looks down the hole.

Kadmos has +8 history. I will roll for him, as he technically is not removed from the game yet.

Rolls

Kadmos: History + Guidance DC 20 - (1d20+8+1d4)

(9) + (3) + 8 = 20

Jun 15, 2024 4:29 pm
Kadmos has heard of these symbols. They are magical in nature and used by some groups, mostly gorgons, to keep snakes from getting out of the pit, but also making them deadlier. These pits are used for people that the gorgons would rather see die a painful death than just turn to stone. These snakes are stronger than normal but can't get out.
Jun 15, 2024 4:54 pm
"And what of those that are thrown into the pit? Does it affect snakes only?"
Jun 15, 2024 5:34 pm
"Yes, only the snakes."
OOC:
If you get too close, they will attack with greater speed and power than expected. Essentially, 3 attacks against the person at +9 to hit, each with 4d4+5 piercing damage on a hit and a DC 17 Con save for 4d6 poison or half on success
Jun 15, 2024 5:49 pm
"So Omeros are we going in?"
Jun 15, 2024 10:56 pm
"We go in, brother," Omeros affirmed as he got on the centaur's back. "I will tell you when I'm in range."
OOC:
Once we get within 30 feet, Omeros will give the signal to halt then use his Mage Hand to grab the bottle.
Jun 15, 2024 11:00 pm
"Hold on tight."

Chironides slowly descends into the pit
Jun 15, 2024 11:24 pm
As the mage hand grabs the bottle, the hand appears to be stiff and the bones don't want to let go just yet. As the hand tugs on the bottle and move the hand, the snakes appear to mistake this this as something alive moving and swarm the hand and bottle as if someone had fallen in. Just as the skeletal hand lets go, the snakes surround the bottle so much that the mage hand cannot produce enough force to rip it away from them.
OOC:
you are safe, but you will need something with stronger force than the 10 on the mage hand can produce to get the bottle away from the snakes that are squeezing it.
Jun 15, 2024 11:36 pm
"Let it go," Omeros grumbled as his annoyance manifested as three force blasts at the snakes slithering over the bottle.
OOC:
Perhaps not the best idea but let's try a bit of pest extermination to see if I can loosen their hold and grab the bottle.

Jun 15, 2024 11:54 pm
The snakes seem to only get angrier and angrier with each blast that hits. some are even lunging into the air as if to bite into the ankle of a person that is not there. It seems like there are dozens upon dozens of snakes here, and their eyes begin to glow red with fury.
OOC:
It's like shooting fish in a barrel, but you aren't sure how many there are. for all you know, it could take an hour to kill this may snakes. For all you know, there could be more being created at the bottom. There are so many you can't see the ground under them.
Jun 15, 2024 11:59 pm
"Up, brother. Let's not risk them rising up like the tide against us. Whatever is in that bottle will continue to rest with its owner."
Jun 16, 2024 12:08 am
Chiron makes his way out of the pit. "Too many in there to kill quickly and not damage the bottle. Unless you have some other way let’s move on"
Jun 16, 2024 1:29 am
At this point, it seems the only way to get the bottle would be to reach for it with your own hand and hope your armor.protects you and use some kind of magic that can grab an object with more force or teleport an object. The snakes are not "carrying" the bottle, but they are constricting it.
Jun 16, 2024 3:41 am
"Let's search the other passage," Omeros suggested. He would share the lead with whichever companion chose to stand by his side.
Jun 16, 2024 4:10 am
"We would probably be more effective if you stay where you are." Says Chironides "However if you prefer walking you are welcome to that as well."
Jun 16, 2024 4:22 am
"Fair enough, brother. I shall remain here."
Jun 16, 2024 10:34 am
OOC:
Just to confirm, "stay where you are" is at the top of the pit? I think omeros is only inside the out because of Chironides holding him while walking along the wall, I believe

Jun 16, 2024 7:23 pm
OOC:
Centaur-back riding, yes.
Jun 16, 2024 9:29 pm
You come across an identical pit. Everything true about the other pit appears to be true here, however, the skeletal hand at the bottom is a clenched fist wearing a ring that seems pristine despite the hand having been devoured.
Jun 16, 2024 9:34 pm
"Once is happenstance. Twice is contrivance. I say we move on."
Jun 17, 2024 2:48 pm
"Agreed," Kadmos replies as he gazes into the second pit of vipers. "While the items held within may prove beneficial to our current quest, they may also be decoys to whittle down intruders. Even if they are potent, we must weigh the cost... and I don't think we can afford to risk losing bodies. Besides... an artifact is powerless with no one to use it."

"Back to the main chamber then?" Asks Chironides "If any of you have any skills in scouting, that may be useful"
Jun 17, 2024 3:25 pm
As you return to the center chamber, you are reminded of the fallen warriors who have been turned to stone that litter the area just past the fountain. It is hard to judge how skilled they are in this motionless state, but based on the fact that they lost you hope at least they were weaker than you. They all appears to be weapon users, with swords, hammers, and daggers, and the occasional spear.

You come to a bridge that overlooks a river. The water doesn't seem that powerful, but it is at least 20 feet below you and you aren't sure but it seems rather deep. As you approach the bridge, you see that there seems to be wooden walkways to the left and right that are inaccessible from your current location. Across from you is a set of statues of warriors. Perhaps this place used to be owned by some group of humans before Hythonia repurposed it. Beyond the statues is another open area with 3 pills and oen that looks to have fallen over. You have yet to cross the bridge, so you can't see much more. You think there might be a doorway on the far end of that room.

What do you do? (Map updated)
Jun 17, 2024 4:32 pm
"Alright... I'll go."

Without waiting for differing opinions, Kadmos will remove his helm, wrapping a piece of cloth over his eyes and returning his helm to his head. He will tighten his grip on his shield and place his sword hand out before him as he starts moving across the bridge.
OOC:
Blindsight to 10 feet. Should be able to walk around normally.

Kadmos crosses the bridge and and doesn't get the sense that there is any living thing on the other side. He can only see about 10 feet away, so all he really sees are pillars, though one has fallen over and appears to have made a hole in the wall.

Chironides looks under the bridge and sees nothing of notes.

The rest of the party get a sense that crossing the bridge appears to be safe. When they follow and catch up to Kadmos, they see that there is a walkway that continues north and the room on the other side of the hole in the eastern wall appears to slope down, likely meeting the wooden bridge that is close to the river.
Jun 18, 2024 3:58 pm
Chiron takes a moment to attach a long chain to a grappling hook before crossing weaving between statues.
Jun 18, 2024 11:12 pm
Kelnes takes his time going between the statues. Being careful as he crosses.

Hopefully this bridge holds for us on our way out as well
Jun 19, 2024 2:12 pm
The bridge appears to be sturdy. Getting around the statues is easy enough, though some of you may worry about breaking an arm off of one of them as you try to slide between them, as if they were restored later anything that fell off now would be gone. You manage to avoid it at this time, as there seems to be no pressure to go fast and you take your time.

What do you wish to do now? There is a hallway north, a room east, and you can always go back if you feel so inclined.
Jun 19, 2024 3:44 pm
Upon hearing the description of the surroundings outside of his limited perceptive range, Kadmos speaks up. "Perhaps we check the room? While the idea of retreat is unpleasant, it may be necessary. I would hate to leave a foe behind us."
Jun 19, 2024 4:07 pm
Chironides readies his shield and hammer and enters the threshold of the room looking for threats.
Jun 19, 2024 5:17 pm
Chironides enters the eastern room as Kadmos suggests. Chironides quickly realizes there are no hostile forces inside, but he does see something noteworthy: a stone snakeman with its head ripped off and the words "trator" scratched onto the chest as if with a bladed weapon. It wouldn't be too big a stretch to imagine this snake man may have had second thoughts about Hythonia and helped the men who were turned to statues earlier inside, only to be found out. Whether he was found out before or after the men arrived is unknown.
Jun 19, 2024 6:36 pm
"Perhaps reattaching the head and applying an anti-petrification potion will grant us an ally."
Jun 19, 2024 6:45 pm
While Chironides checks the room, Kadmos will begin to systematically wrack his brain attempting to remember stories or legends about previous groups of adventurers and would-be heroes who came after Hythonia.

If he can remember any lost adventurers, he'll in turn try to determine if any of the statues meet the descriptions of those heroes of yore.
OOC:
Not sure if that's part of your intended story, but I'll roll History just in case.

Rolls

"I’m not so sure about the worthiness of that snake man, but perhaps one of those stone heroes outside deserves a second chance."
Jun 19, 2024 8:20 pm
Kadmos recalls a tale of a warrior of nature (Ranger) who knew a lot about gorgons, hythonia especially. They might have more knowledge than others about Hythonia, and Kadmos thinks he knows how to narrow it down to 3 of the statues earlier which would be said warrior.
OOC:
If someone is willing to use their potion before the final battle, Kadmos can tell them which 3 he thinks is the right one. The first person will roll a d6 and on a 5 or 6 guess the right one. If wrong, the next person will get it right on a 4, 5, or 6. If still wrong, the next one will be the right person. Any wrong person will be a warrior with the veteran or knight statblock.

Recently un-petrified ranger
OOC:
Well someone's lucky, hahaha. I'm going to trust that you are going to remember you don't have your petrification reversing potion. At the least, i'll remember the party has only 4 left, but I appreciate honesty in case I forget.
Chironides randomly chooses one of the statues and pours the entire bottle over the statue's head. Color begins to return as if you were watching powerful bleaching but in reverse. As soon as the head and chest are fully flesh again, you hear a loud inhale, as if the person was unable to breath until now. The man looks around and sees you all (I presume everyone comes to watch) and sees the others in stone. "By the gods, what happened? Don't tell me... I presume we lost by the fact I don't recognize any of you and I recognize those around me who are as stone as the ground beneath us. I also presume that Hythonia yet still lives and you have your reasons to slay her. Am I correct? If so, what is your quest?"
Jun 19, 2024 10:38 pm
Handing the restored hero a skin of wine…

"The quest is still the same, Hythonia yet lives and it appears the gods have blessed you with a second chance. Together we will end her curse and hasten her journey into the underworld to reap her rewards. What say you hero?"

Christos Cosmilis

The man happily accepts the wine skin and drinks a decent amount. After wiping his face, he says, "My name is Christos, and I will join you. I studied gorgons before our quest, and I am aware of Hythonia's tricks. I am unaware of a snake man helping us, but I was told that someone on Hythonia's side was turning against her. We were able to find her lair far easier than expected, and the door was easily opened when we arrived. However, it appeared the inside man was found out, as Hythonia herself ambushed us in this very room. Normally she is in the farthest room on her throne. One thing you must know about Hythonia, she is able to shed her skin like a snake just before she would die. This allows her to get out of any harm's way and gives her personal guard time to fight while she regains her strength for a second, more deadly fight. Be ready. The first time you take her down is only the first."

Christos looks you all over. "You all seem stronger somehow than we were. I don't know how you brought me back, but if it is a limited resource it is up to you. I have no way reversing petrification of my own, thus anything you use is up to you. If Hythonia or one of her gorgons petrifies someone in the fight, then there is no telling if it is better to use it now or later."
Jun 20, 2024 4:58 pm
OOC:
Much obliged!
"Fair. I just wanted to be sure no one possessed any specialized gear or skills you considered essential. A mirrored tower shield, an arrow of Hythonia slaying, or even a spell to shunt her off into the underworld. Had to ask."
Jun 20, 2024 6:16 pm
OOC:
To keep things a bit more simple, I'll make a poll to vote on the 2 main ways you can proceed forward.
Option 1 is the straightforward way. There is nothing complicated about it. You simply go forward from where you are.
Option 2 is to go the way of the way on the left. When you cross the bridge you see there is a wooden bridge to the left that is about 35 feet away but about 15-20 lower down. if you guys want to find a way to make that work, you can do so.
Option 3 is the obligatory "if the players have some clever idea they want to do instead" option. If you do, want to use this option, perhaps use the out of character section to flesh it out in case there is a lot of back and forth.

I will check the poll a few times a day, but if I see less than 5 votes by Monday, I will go with what I see at the time.

What way do you want to go? Public

Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
Jun 20, 2024 9:01 pm
OOC:
I see 3 votes for option 1, since that is the majority I will assume that is the final decision
You all collect yourselves and your new companion and continue down the main path. You find yourself in a room with 2 pillars holding up the room and 4 snake statues in the far corners. As soon as the last of you pass through the double doors, you hear a sound of stone scraping against stone as the door behind you and the two in front of you, one leading left and one right, reveal a stone slab that is starting to slide down. The snake heads in the 4 corners also seem to be opening, but if you wish to act about the doors there is no time to think about what the snake heads are doing.
OOC:
Each of you needs to make a choice for yourself. Do you try to break for a door? if so, which one? If you do, roll initiative. If you get a 20 or higher, you can slide under a door just before it closes, but anyone else will be trapped inside. If you don't break for a door, you might have the chance to cast a spell or do something else that would only take 1 action or less (but not multiple actions, like a bonus action and action) before the doors shut.

Important: please roll an initiative check as part of your post so we can see how fast you are. Even if you have some guaranteed way to get out of the room, you may get hurt before you leave if the roll is less than 20
Jun 20, 2024 10:33 pm
Chironides suspects a trap that is dependent on that stone slab sliding down.

Chiron moves to slab, hammer and spike in hand he is determined to jam the mechanism
Jun 20, 2024 10:43 pm
It takes a second, but the tools appear to be crushed as Chironides realizes magic is at play, not mere physics alone.
OOC:
in order to find thus out, he would have to let the doors close enough that he would not have time to also slide underneath

It also seems the Chironides is too slow to act and wouldn't even make it to the door before it slams, so testing this idea would be too late

As the doors close, nearly everyone makes it out before the doors slam shut, either through their own speed or the aid of others. The only one that doesn't is Isaiah, who does manage to get out with his magic but not quickly. The door slams shut as he is the only one in the room. With his magic, he makes a hole in the door, but not after poisonous gas comes out of the snake heads. He inhales some of the gas and then walks out of the room. The hole he made allows the gas to escape, but rather than dissipate it gets thicker and thicker. Everyone retreats back the way they came and are forced back as far as the bridge, where the heavy smoke fills the entire chamber before the room and flows down the rock face to the river below. The gas gets thicker and thicker, and there is no way of knowing for how long the gas will flow. Unless you are all willing to go back in or have some way past it, this option is now not available.
OOC:
No one described which way they ran, only that they moved, so i'm just going to say you all went back the way you came in.

Isaiah will take some poison damage, as seen below (18 poison damage before any resistances), but after that it seems no one will get hurt but now you must figure out how to use the other path or get rid of the poison gas, as you ran from it rather than dealing with it.

Above is still true, but you went the left way instead of retreating the way you came in.

As you all make a break for it, Kelnes causes a wall of water to appear in the doorway with the door containing a large hole in it. As long as the wall persists, the gas does not escape, but you get the sense that the gas and building and building and there is no sense of it stopping. if the wall were to disappear the gas would not only flood your way but likely be so concentrated that it would kill you all in seconds.

At the moment, there appears to be a small room ahead, followed by a larger room, and just before the larger room the hallway veers right. the smaller room appears to be a storage room, but mostly containing food supplies, nothing of interest to you (no need to roll, just declaring no interest). The larger room seems more comfortable, and you see a magical mechanism on the wall. You might try to decipher it with knowledge of magic (DC 25 Arcana, max 2 people can roll or 1 with advantage if person with proficiency "helps" the other with proficiency, functionally same thing).

While the others try and decipher the mechanism, Chironides explores the passageway to the east.
Jun 25, 2024 1:51 pm
The glyph appears to have multiple runes about it. You aren't sure what the multiple combinations of runes do. Some might turn off the gas, while others might open the doors, but opening the doors without first turning off the gas would be a problem. It is also possible the glyph is rigged to explode if you give an invalid command, though that is only an assumption.

Chironides peaks around the hallway and sees an elaborate room with intricate double doors on the north wall. This definitely screams "I lead to a throne room". The hallways does continue, though, and looks to lead into a natural cave.

As for Isaiah, he is trapped on the southern side, any closer north than the end of the bridge will result in inhaling poisonous gas. The gas isn't opaque and has no odor, but you can sense its presence as you near the end of the bridge. The only opening you see so far is a wooden bridge to the left that leads somewhere no one has gone yet and that is about 35 feet away and 15 feet lower than the bridge you are on.

Athletics (Grapple) - (1d20+9)

(12) + 9 = 21

Jun 27, 2024 1:26 am
Ok, so a lot needs to happen for that to happen. I'm writing this before I roll anything. First, I will roll initiative for you against their passive initiative (10 + mod). If you go before them, then i'll roll a athletics or acrobatics check for the enemy. Not likely to beat a 21, but they might roll high, who knows. If you go after them, they might move and do things before you get to the guy, such as pulling out bows and firing or casting spells. If that happens, I'll have them go and tell you what happens and you can decide if you still do that or not. If you roll low initiative, i'll refrain from rolling the athletics or acrobatics check until I know you still want to do that plan.

Ok, rolling initiative.

Post Roll: Ok, looks like you tied with all of their passive initiatives. I let players win initiative ties automatically, just like how if you roll equal to a DC you pass, not have to reroll. Going to roll the snake man's check to see if you grapple or not.

Alright, looks like things went exactly as you had planned. Obviously, combat has started. I'm going to go like normal, having everyone roll against the enemy's passive initiative of 12 like you did. You Chironides has used his action and all his movement. Unless you have a bonus action you plan to use, i'm going to say we'll just skip Chironides turn since he kinda already got to act.

For the rest of you, if you see a check next to your initiative, you go before the enemy. If you see an X, you don't go until after everyone else goes and the enemy goes. This goes for Isaiah too, since combat cares about 6 second increments. As always, if you have a way to give a bonus to initiative or have advantage and I didn't include it, tell me and i'll adjust if it would change anything.

Looks like @valdattaMadun,@annex can go now, then the enemy goes, and then we'll just go to a side initiative system where all the players go and then all the enemies.

Oh, and I guess I'll add the 2 snake men in the long tunnel since Isaiah's movements will occur during combat, though those 2 will not really be aware of any combat until after they walk down the long hallway and realize the others are doing something, so maybe 2 or 3 rounds until they realize that as they'd be walking, not running.

Why would he be restrained? I saw grapple. All that does is let you drag him with you. What did you do to restrain him? He wouldn't be prone either since you fall prone if you fall 10 feet or more and even from a ceiling you aren't strong enough to lift him to the ceiling so he would be 5 feet under you and thus fall maybe 5 feet if you let him go

Ok, that's a separate roll, one for the grapple, and one for the shove. I'll make those rolls here. if Chironide got a higher roll, he's prone and there would be advantage. If they tie or Chironide is less, then nothing changed.

Post Roll: ok, so the enemy is prone so the attacks were with advantage. The one-shot is close to over, but just in case it happens again please make all of those rolls at once. I am not saying it happened, but since the nat 1 was already out there, it is possible to decide to knock prone after seeing that and knowing that prone is better than attacking yourself. As such, if this kind of event happens again, I will say "you waited too long. You can make an attack but not shove." Now, if you wanted to do some teamwork and weave your turns together since this will be side initiative soon, that's one thing if declared ahead of time, but I would prefer not to wonder if the shove only came because the nat 1 occurred, not because it was always the plan.

You count as large for carrying capacity but remember you still spend double the speed when grappling an enemy. You need to be 2 sizes larger to ignore that.

@valdattaMadun You're up before the enemy goes. Due to how far away the combat is, you may need to dash. Also, just a note to everyone, the hallway is only 5 feet wide, so remember (a) moving through allies is difficult terrain (b) you can shoot past creatures, but they get half cover and (c) while crowd control spells might be good battles in such narrow places can become a slog so unless you have some way of just locking the enemy away I suggest you move to a larger room before this gets less fun.

Those in the hallway hear the sound of frantic orders being given as the snake men and women come out of the cave area to chase Chironides. They all have a fanatical look in their eyes, if not that of blood lust. The women take off their masks, revealing reptilian features on an otherwise human face in addition to glowing eyes. The snakes they have for hair begin to move and hiss. However, both of the women appeared to have to run to get where they are, as did one of the snake men. However, two of the snake men, presumably the two near the one Chironides grabbed, and one other were able to get into a position to attack. The one Chironides had dragged and knocked prone attempts to wrestle his way out of Chironides grasp.
OOC:
I'm assuming Chironides has a shield out and does not have a hammer out. If this is the case, he gets his bonus to AC, but technically can only attack with his hooves as he is using a hand to maintain grapple.

Summary: Nothing happens. Artificers aren't the most OP, but the fact they can get 25 AC is a bit busted. This is why armorer doesn't get shield spell, though battlesmith can still get it.

Super Important: The woman are medusas with petrifying gaze. D&D 5e does not have any facing rules. As such, if any of you do not have full cover between you and both women, you MUST make a choice and declare your choice with EVERY turn. Option (1) you look at the ground to avoid eye contact. saying you hide behind your shield or such will mechanically mean the same thing. If you do, you have disadvantage on all attacks and cannot target anyone with anything that requires sight (2) you make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw for each woman still alive (keep in mind Kelnes gives you a +3 to your saves if within 10 feet / 2 squares of him). If you succeed, you can attack like normal. If you get a 10-13, you are restrained as you start turning to stone. If you get a 9 or less, you immediately turn to stone.

If you do not declare what you are doing, I will assume based on what I see with your actions and rolls. For example, if at any time you would have line of sight of W1 or W2 and you make an attack without disadvantage (or for Kelnes if I see attacks with advantage from reckless) and you didn't declare anything, I will roll the Con saves for you as I will say "it appears your character was careless for a second or might not be used to fighting this way". As long as you declare what you do, you are fine.

If someone wants to try something, like showing the women a reflective surface, you can try, but here is what I will say happens: First, you won't be able to fight while doing that. In order to focus on such a task, you will give everyone but the women advantage on attacks against you, and you will be using your action to maintain this every round.

I'm actually not sure Kadmos can do much of anything at the moment. You can't end your turn in an occupied space, and you can't move through an enemy's space. The best Kadmost can do is moving to N42 or O41, above or next to Kelnes. You could use misty step, though, if you take the the dash action to get to T42.

I highly suggest that you all try to decide if you want to try and retreat to a bigger room or not. I am warning you all that if you stay in the hallway the fight will start getting slog-ish.

I see nothing about where you are looking. I need this information every round until those 2 snake women are dead. Chironides can cast the spell at a place he is not looking, since the spell is worded like fireball and it does not include the phrase "that you can see" before "within range". However, without looking, he won't know who failed and who did not, and as the DM I still need to know who has advantage against him and who does not.

If he looks, he knows what happens but I need 2 con saves, one for each woman.
If he does not look, he does not know what happened, does not have to make the saves, and all the enemies have advantage against him as he is functionally blinding himself to avoid being turned to stone.

Rolling Saves. To save space, i'm going to subtract their bonus from your DC, so it is purely what they need roll on the d20. In this case, they get a +1, but they have advantage so roll 1 and 2 are part of SM1's roll and they just need to roll a 16.

Results:
- SM1: Success
- SM3: Failure
- SM5: Success
- W1: Failure
- W2: Failure

Note: if the snake women are incapacitated, they their gaze does not work. HOWEVER, if you do not look away, the moment someone shakes them out of the hypnosis you would make the save as they are no longer incapacitated and you are looking at them. As such, if you want you can attack without disadvantage on your turn, but if you don't say "I look away at the end of my turn" I will just roll a save for you when that happens, no questions of if you meant to or not. I only asked Chironides because he was the first, but his example should help you all understand what I mean now.

Ok, that will be 2 opportunity attacks (SM2 and SM4), though with your 25 AC I assume you have no fear. They are both construct attacks, so if you somehow get hit, your speed is reduced to 0 and you don't move after all.

Actually, you put down your shield, and donning a shield takes an action (can't use free interaction), so your AC is 22 (shield was +1 shield, so -3 AC)

The rules state "Whether a creature is a friend or an enemy, you can’t willingly end your move in its space." I'm not 100% sure if "end your move" means when you decide you are not using any more speed for the turn or if it means anytime you pause your movement, even if you are going to move more later. How i'll rule it is that you are squeezing in order to be in an ally's space, thus you have disadvantage on your attacks as you don't have the arm movement you normally do since you are in such a small space with someone else. Lucky for you, SM2 is prone so the advantage from melee attacks against him would cancel out that disadvantage, but if this comes back up note that I will rule you are squeezing if you try to do that.

And yes, the first guy dies so you move forward as you said.

Note: I did not see anything about looking down or not at the end of your turn, so you also have to make a save when the medusa's aren't incapacitated anymore. No one has said they are, so if you have line of sight to the medusas and are within 30 feet, everyone is making a save then (Chironides already did his saves earlier).

Worshiper of Hythonia

One of the snake men sees the women dazed and remembers the light he saw. He goes over and shakes one of them awake, who then in turn shakes the other awake. She then shakes the other snake man awake.
OOC:
SM5 uses action to shake W2 out of hypnotic pattern. W2 does the same for W1, who does it for SM3
This leaves only 2 of the snake men to be able to fight. Before this can occur, Omeros and Kelnes realize that the women are looking straight at them and they never looked away. They get lucky, but if the women live on they will have to make that choice again.
The two snake men leap at their targets. One of them feels like maybe he has a chance protecting the women now that Chironides does not have a shield, and the other decides to go for Kelnes after he slashed him. Chironides gets grappled by a lucky constrict and then dragged away from the women but otherwise safe from the upcoming bite. Kelnes manages to dodge both attacks.
OOC:
Summary:
No one is hypnotized anymore.
Chironides is now grappled and restrained by SM1 and was dragged away from the snake women (escape DC 13, takes full action to escape).
Kelnes can have an opportunity attack against the snake man that dragged Chironides away. This snake man has never taken damage, so unless you get a crit and use your highest divine smite I don't think you will kill him.

Everyone can go again. I'll add the ranger. he will go after everyone else.

Important Reminder: please tell me what you do with your vision or else i'm going to assume you look up and I'll make a save for you with my next comment and if you are restrained and I didn't see any disadvantage i'll reroll the attacks.

yes, if the medusa cannot see you or you cannot see her, no need to worry about petrification. However, anyone that is in the area or who would be looking at something on the other side of it is effectively blind. Now, the rules are weird. RAW: unless someone is hiding, you can hear the sounds of things they do, like walk, and thus you know generally where they are. While you are both blinded (which is the case when botha are in heavily obscured area), everyone makes attacks without advantage or disadvantage because you have both (advantage for them not seeing you and disadvantage for you not seeing them), with Kadmos as the exception for his blind fighting style who would have advantage.

Note: unless you have blindsight like Kadmos, no one will trigger opportunity attacks. This is because even though you know they are there they are still functionally invisible so by the time you hear them walk away they are already too far away.

Misjudged the size. Kelnes and Chironides will definitely get enveloped unless I can center it in S47. Would that engulf the medusas and SM3 and SM5?
Jun 29, 2024 11:50 am
OOC:
Hunger of hadar is a radius, not a cube, thus you must place the origin in the center (as opposed to a face like a cube). S47 inside of a wall, so that's not valid. You could theoretically do something like this:
[ +- ] possible location
However, I'm not sure how generous I as the DM am supposed to be to allow players to be THAT precise with positioning spells to get only enemies when they can't actually see the enemies or even the spot the spell would come into place at. It's one thing if you are willing to engulf the whole fog cloud, not caring who you hurt and who you don't. it would be another thing if the fog cloud had come after the hunger of hadar.

Now, I'm allowing turn order to be fluid since you are all going at once. if you want, we can say "Oh, Omeros actually went before Kelnes". if we do that, there is just the question of the medusa's gaze. Right now you don't have to worry about it because you can't see them and they can't see you, but if you went before Kelnes then the fog would not be blocking vision yet. However, the spell doesn't say "that you can see" to where you put it, so I guess while it feels like it bypasses the gaze too easily, I think RAW you could have done it.

Thoughts?

Thinking about it more, I'm going to try to go RAW as much as possible. As such, whether it is before the fog cloud or after, this is valid because the spot I suggested does not have full cover and does not require sight so you can do it. Just note that, while I will go RAW as much as I can, do not be surprised when boss monsters have unusual tricks. Hythonia didn't become the queen by acting like any old medusa. She knows what people do to defeat regular medusa, and thus those kinds of tricks are the kinds of things she has countermeasures for.

The snake man that had constricted Chironides yells "He got away!" They can all hear roughly where Chironides went, as he is not trying to be stealthy. You all hear "Fall back!" One of the women yell, "Ah! It's cold over here! If you go this way, go as far as you can!" You then hear the sound of multiple snake men and women, all with snake lower halves, slithering away from you. One of them, however, realizes he cannot go anywhere. Desperate, he tries to go after Kelnes, who he remembers where he was when he casted fog cloud and goes for that same location. With the triton grabbed, the snake man tries to go in for a bite.

The remaining snake man in the hallway with Isaiah sees all of the others come in. "What are you all doing here?" One of the others replies, "Intruders by the throne room. What is going on here?" The first replies, "There was an intruder here as well. The elemental is obeying the man over there! He must have made it appear!" The snake mean by the elemental then disengages and attempts to move close to Isaiah, not quite able to get into melee but able to get very close.
OOC:
Summary:
Kelnes takes 11 piercing, 6 piercing, and 9 poison damage.
Kadmos can make an opportunity attack against SM3 if he wishes. I didn't roll for you since there may be a chance you didn't want to.
You all hear the enemies retreat, but you can't see exactly where they went.

As for Isaiah, you don't have to worry about averting your gaze unless the women are within 30 feet / 6 squares of you, though if you don't do it on your turn and they happen to get close enough then I'll roll for you. Your elemental is immune to petrification so no need to worry about its gaze. Technically it is restrained before stone, but since the restrain is from turning to stone then I don't see why it would be restrained.

@Basil,@MaJunior,@GreyWord,@valdattaMadun,@annex you may all go again. Reminder: unless you state that you want to go in a particular order, you go in the order you post.

If Omeros is unable to post for reasons he explained, I will have him drop concentration if you all request it and have him follow suit with what the others do, likely doing an eldritch blast if the part isn't dashing and the obscurement goes away.

Ok, so the battlemap has been updated. I was unaware that hunger of hadar created a difficult terrain area, so the enemies would have felt how hard it was to move through and when someone yelled that the northern route wasn't in the area they would have ran that way instead.

Everything posted so far should be good. one note for Isaiah, if you use thorn whip they are always pulled. it says "if the creature is Large or smaller, you pull the creature up to 10 feet closer to you." Can is not in there. did you still want to do that? you can break up your movement so it would happen such that they aren't pulled next to you

I'll allow you to pull them 0 feet, but I feel as though that is technically correct while not the way 5e tends to do it. The game tends to be careful about when it uses the word "can" to mean "optional", though technically "up to" does mean "at most" and thus 0 is not more than 10. I am not going to debate as you soloed these 2 enemies easily anyways so it won't be that big of a deal. You are lucky I rolled a 1 on the 1d3, haha.

Ok, before I resolve Kadmos's turn, some things are going to happen.

First, I saw straight rolls, which means he did not avert his eyes, so I'll roll 2 DC 14 Constitution saving throws for the medusas he is now looking in the direction of.

Second, since the enemy did not fun as far, they used their action to ready attacks, so Kadmos will be potentially constricted and shot at by a couple arrows.

Based on how above goes, he may become restrained. If that occurs, I will reroll 2 of his 3 attacks (since one was a nat 1 no need to reroll that).
OOC:
Summary: Ok, so every good roll was put on his save and every bad roll was put on their attacks, so nothing happened. Kadmos's turn goes as described. I will now make Omeros do something basic and have the ranger do something basic too. If either of them would see a medusa, I will get them disadvantage to be safe.

I ended up having them take the dash action following Kadmos. Due to all of the allies and corpses they had to walk over, they had to take the dash actions and remain inside of the fog cloud, looking down in case the fog cloud ends.

Kelnes swims and find 2 paths. One, with his instincts and understanding of water flow, likely leads to a water source far from the lair that supplies new water. Likely a lake. The other, however, flows north. There is a small section of air, but after that the water seems to flow into something used to pour water into another room. It is possible that the water may flow out enough that someone could squeeze out. An alternate way to the throne room, maybe? With all the squeezing, it may not be wise unless you can breath underwater or hold your breath at least 3 minutes, and even then there is a lot of squeezing and thus may require strength to pull your way through.

You enter through the double doors and find yourself in an expansive room. There is water deep on the left and right, and you see statues of what appear to be people worshiping someone up ahead. Towering statues of snake heads are before you, and you see areas on either side where one could easily get in or out of the water. Stairs ahead of you take you about 10 feet up to a place you think is 20 feet above the water. the Ceilings appears to be 50 feet above the water level, thus 40 feet above you now, 30 feet above the section ahead, 20 feet above the section above that, and 10 feet above the section in back. Due to the higher elevation, you can't see past the section where people are worshiping. To do so, you would have to be in the next section. Despite the ritual that should be going on, the area is oddly quiet save for the sounds of water flooding in from the left and right.

Surprisingly, the throne is empty, though you see it is surrounded by statues of people that appear to be in heroic poses, like trophies of the heroes she is most proud to have defeated due to their fame or how cockey they were. On the farthest wall, those who are flying or on the ceiling notice a woman chained to the wall. She appears to be unconscious, and there is some sort of light shining on her from a snake head above her.

Suddenly, you hear the sound of water shifting, followed by a voice that seems to bounce off of the walls and thus be too difficult to pinpoint the origin. "Another group of heroes. More statues for my collection. With I smash you to pieces, or keep you as trophies? Only time will tell. I would tell you to bring a message to the princess's father, but he will get that message soon enough when she becomes a Gorgon at midnight during the full moon. Now, who wishes to look deeply into my eyes first? I promise they are the most beautiful thing you will see, hahahahaha!" I'm going to go ahead and roll the confusion affects now. Chironides and Kadmos are up, and they are not affected, so this won't come into effect until after, but I will add it to the battle information.

It seems that the ranger will be allowed to act normally, and Omeros and Kelnes will effectively skip their turns as they can't take actions or move.

Big reminder: anyone who starts their turn within 30 feet (6 squares, no extra cost for diagonals) MUST declare if they are looking away or not. If you do not look away or fail to mention if you look away, you must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a 14, 15, 16, or 17, you start turning to stone and are restrained. If you moved closer to her, this would occur the moment you are 30 feet from her. If you get an 18 or higher, you are fine for 1 round. if you get a 13 or less, you immediately become petrified and someone will need to use their action to give you one of the potions the king gave you or greater restoration if someone knows it, or you are effectively dead. If you do look away, you have disadvantage on attacks against her and any feature you use that says "that you can see" is not available.

Moving towards the voice, Kadmos runs down potential strategies in his head. Hastily he forms a checklist of sorts, and settles on what he's starting with.

Once he gets close enough to Hythonia, the ground beneath their feet rumbles and a huge hand made of earth and stone erupts, attempting to grab the medusa queen.

Just a note, I am experimenting with an alternate version of Legendary Resistance, which she definitely has. If she is not below half her max HP, just automatically succeeds on any saving throw or ability check she is forced to make. Knowing that, do you still want to cast that spell?

Since this would restrain her, if she failed in the old system there is a good chance she would spend a legendary resistance on it anyways.

Also, M14 and M15 are adjacent to her, yes, though i will say with Hythonia where she is standing, M14 doesn't have enough space for a medium person to stand (only half of it is filled with stairs, so you'd probably risk falling into the water if you stood there), but M15 should be fine.

And yes, she is large.

@MaJunior making sure to get a confirmation before I narrate, just in case any of this affects your decision.

Something is a charm effect specifically if it inflicts the charmed condition, like Hypnotic pattern gives you the charmed condition and then inflicts more things for the charmed duration. Confusion does not inflict the charmed condition, so no.

Chironides swings, but luck is not on his side. Hythonia dodge the blind swings, though one of them hits her bracers but slide off before inflicting harm. Even his hooves swing windly. He is safe from petrification, but not from what happens next. With Chironides looking away, Hythonia uses a legendary action to reach out with her snakey hair. Unluckily for Chironides, the hair connects.

Fine with Kadmos going first
Jul 5, 2024 6:15 pm
OOC:
Right, yes, she had disadvantage, but advantage cancelled that out, so she got a 23 to hit, not 26. Even with the 26, the 27 AC from haste would have blocked it. Not complaining, but artificers are generally pretty weak except in 1 area and that is having AC higher than the gave ever had to think a player could have. this is why armorer artificers lost the shield spell, hahaha.

As for Crusader's mantle, all good. Chironides did not hit with any of the attacks, but I'll expect players to remember they can add it or that Kadmos will say "hey, you did 1d4 extra damage for each of those hits" if they forget, but i'll add it to the tracker to be safe.

Having Kadmos go first isn't an issue, except in 1 way that players could not have known about. Hythonia was going to use her legendary actions to attack the first person that attacked her and then move without opportunity attacks. If Kadmos went first, but Hythonia attacked Chironides, then the only other legendary action she could take would have been before that attack, and if she moved she could not have made that other attack. If I say it was against Kadmos after all, he will be forced to use his reaction to cast shield and spend the spell slot even though it was declared against Chironides. If you guys are ok with a little suspension of logic, I'm going to have Hythonia do her original plan, but somehow it all worked out since dice have already been rolled, so while it doesn't quite make sense, I'll say Kadmos and Chironides ran up at the same time, then Kadmos did his action, Hythonia attacked and missed Chironides, then Chironides attacked, then Hythonia moved.

Hythonia

As Hythonia charges towards the rest of the party, she looks at those around her. She sees 2 dangerous heroes, and one weaker looking hero. She also sees one flying out of range. She ultimately decides to go after the triton, and attempts to constrict him.
OOC:
Note, it seems the petrification occurs at the start of your turn, but can occur later if you looked away and then look back for any reason before your next turn. As such, Kelnes did not have to already look away, so she does not have advantage, but he will have to decide that later.
With Kelnes wrapped tightly by her snakey lower half, she swipes her claw at him and decides to get Omeros with her hair, not yet knowing about the icey armor. She lands all of her attacks, though is startled by the icy armor that is now shadered but protected Omeros from some of the damage while harming Hythonia.
OOC:
Note: the automatic damage to Kelnes is from this part of Hythonia's constrict ability: "Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained and takes 15 (3d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns, and Hythonia can’t constrict another target."

In summary:
Kelnes is now restrained and took (has not raged yet) 17 bludgeoning, 17 slashing, and 9 poison damage for 43 total.
Omeros took 35 bludgeoning damage, though he had 25 temp hp so actually only took 15. Hythonia took 25 in the process.

Noted. that's not resistance to poison damage, just advantage on save that involve poison.

The rest of the party may go. Note: Omeros and Kelnes are unable to act this turn due to the lair action. I'm not sure how that effects their ability to look away, so I'm going to assume they are still able to make that choice. Kelnes may as well look down since he is restrained. Omeros can't act so it is up to him if he wants to look away or not.

I will have the ranger go last unless someone wants him to go before them and he will look down. he was stone before and doesn't want to do that again. With these actions completed, Hythonia's lair takes effect. It seems all of the statues in her throne room start to animate. Some run other to players, while others simply lash out from where they are. Each hero, other than Kelnes who is already coiled by Hythonia herself, is attacked by one if they are on the ground. If the statues hit, they wrap their arms around the hero's waist and try to keep them in place.

So, not sure how we should handle this. You are attacking the statue that tried to grab you? The statue was animated only for a moment and then returned to be inanimate. it isn't a new combatant in the fight. also, did you do that to the statue that missed you, or were you trying to help Kadmos? Lastly, I see 3 rolls, but unless you are attempting to initiate a grapple, breaking someone out of a grapple is your entire action. If you are initiating a grapple, you get 1 attempt per attack in the attack action, so just 2. Please confirm what exactly you were doing so we are on the same page.

Hythonia

Hythonia looks at Kadmos. She was going to try and take out the druid, in order to eliminate the elemental, but sees the fighter have is eyes closed (or perhap a cloth over them, not sure based on earlier). "You dare fight as if you have no eyes! I will crush you!" She makes her attacks against Kadmos, letting go of Kelnes in order to try and constrict him. With Kadmos constricted, she extends her long snakey body (which can reach 15 feet), and drops him in the water over to the left. She then turns back to Isaiah, whose eyes are averted. "Now, with that man out of the way, how about YOU entertain me."
OOC:
Summary:
Kadmos was constricted, but she let him go over the water. her constrict had a reach of 15 feet so she spent her movement moving him over there and letting go. He took 20 damage in the process.
Isaiah was hit with 2 attacks, taking 11 slashing, 3 poison, and 42 bludgeoning.
Isaiah had to make a DC 21 CON save to keep the elemental from the 42 damage (didn't roll for 14 damage, as he automatically makes the save) and succeeded
Kadmos was suddenly thrown in the water so he would not have likely held his breath (as it did not jump in on his own) and drank a little of of the water. He was not poisoned, though. If Kadmos wanted to climb back up, he would need to either make a DC 20 Athletics check to climb up or fall back in the water (as he is wet and the stone is smooth) which would require him to dash and thus take most of his movement, or else swim to G30 to climb out and run back to the fight).

Hythonia

Kelnes strikes Hythonia with unexpected fury, heavily wounding her but not knocking her out.
Isaiah conjures nature spirits to aid in his ability to fight. The spirits try to help him hit Hythonia as he looks away, but the attack deflects off of her armor just before the thorns would pierce her skin.

Hythonia glares at Kelnes, ignoring Isaiah now that she sees the elemental gone and that he failed to harm her. She decides to try another tactic. With one legendary action, she slithers away, and with another she reaches her hands into the ground. As she does, spikes of petrified earth jolt up.
OOC:
These spikes are a non-magical version of the spike growth spell in a 30 foot radius around her. every 5 feet / 1 square moved within will result in 2d8 piercing damage done to those on the ground. This will last until her next turn and she is immune to it. It is also difficult terrain.
[ +- ] Effect
There will likely be other questions, but those that I can predit:
- Chironides: can I walk on the ceiling? The spikes say "on the ground" so not on all solid surfaces. Keep in mind, though, that unless you want to drop on her from above you will need to walk up to her to do melee from at least 1 pillar.
- Isaiah: will i be hurt if I fly? No, as long as you are more than 5 feet off the ground, you shouldn't be.
Jul 9, 2024 2:14 am
The fugue lifted, and the pain set in. He was barely standing, barely able to fight, but he wouldn't give up that easy.

- Misty step and eldritch blast
- Back away from Hythonia and Hunger of Hadar

Reminder: you are hurt when you enter a space with spikes, not exiting it. You may be in the area now, but if you go straight up, those spots are't in the area. You would not get hurt for backing up, but you would if you got closer to her.

If Kadmos wants to undo his turn, he can try an athletic check to climb with advantage because of Chironides. It would still require Kadmos to dash to get up, but He would probably have 10 or 15 feet of speed left when he gets to the top since Chironides is helping to pull the other end of the rope up. If Kadmos declines, Chironides can do something else assuming he asked Kadmos if he wanted help and kadmos verbally declined.

DC 20 athletics check with advantage as you climb the wall. The water is poisonous but it is otherwise still water, not rough or flowing much. The check is purely for the climb.

Hythonia scowls and points at the statues around you all. You notice that most of the statues are still whole, but a few of them have been to pieces. You start to see petrified hands and feet, and a head or two, start to float in the air. At Hythonia's whim, they swirll around and start to slam into each of you as she moves south even more.
OOC:
She is now a level lower, meaning you would need to be edge (row 29 or 30) to able to aim any attacks at her, or to go down the stairs.

Her action before she moved was to cast Animate Objects, targeting chunks of petrified victims. She commands them to "attack the people who are not her or her worshipers or sisters". There are 5 people not unconscious (including the ranger), so 2 attacks each.

Oops, I rolled damage without attacks, hehehe.

Hythonia

As Hythonia takes the slams from the air elemental, she releases a high pitched screech that makes everyone cover their ears. She molts, as a snake does to shed its old skin, and slithers at blinding speed to the water to the west before diving underneath. Just before she makes it to the water, she yells, "Now, my most loyal servants, protect your queen!" As she says this, 3 grappling hooks appear and snake men the size of hythonia use them to crawl over the walls. The each hiss, and then in unison say, "You have harmed the queen. You will pay with your lives!" They all take out scimitars the size of a greatsword to each of you and begin their assault. The ranger yells, "She molted! If we kill her elite guard she will be forced to come out and face us in her most vulnerable but lethal state! These men can't turn you to stone!"
OOC:
Hythonia's Mythic trait has been triggered. She is swimming in the water below. The poison has become too thick to see her. The water is fairly deep, so the top is not moved as she swims. These 3 will take Hythonia's place in initiative, so @Basil,@MaJunior are up. Make sure to check the map.

Worshiper of Hythonia

The elite worshipers look for prey. Worshiper 1 sees Kadmos in his way and attempts to take him on. He misses with his tail but follow up

Worshiper 2, having not been engaged yet, seems Omeros and Kelnes as equal opportunities.

Worshiper 3 feels the hum of the thunder gauntlets drawing him towards Chironides, but he sees his starey cloak and is familiar enough with the gods and Nyx to know that means he is harder to hit. He is clearly covered in armor, so he looks for other options, knowing that he will find everyone hard to fight and thus Chironides is not worth attacking. He sees the druid and elects to go for him with his tail, as it can reach him.
OOC:
Since Hythonia is in the water and you know these guys aren't gorgons/medusa, I'm assuming everyone looked up at what the ranger said so no advantage from any of you looking down. When Hythonia returns, I'll ask who is willing to look down or not.

Hythonia

Hythonia seems to still be under the water, not fighting directly, yet her voice echoes as if from the air everywhere at once, as if her laid is speaking for her. "You seem to be making easy work of my most trusted men. I should help them. they are so loyal and brave, after all!"

As a lair action, water shoots out from the spouts on the walls, shooting each of you. It is nearly impossible to hold your breath in time before the water shoots at you. If you fail the dexterity save, there is a chance you may be poisoned by the water.

Worshiper of Hythonia

Ironmonger42

Worshiper of Hythonia

The worshipers look around, their eyes aglow with zeal. They look like they would lay down their lives for Hythonia. It is hard to tell that these were likely mortal men once who gave in to Hythonia's presence and decided that a life devoted to her was better than life as a statue, and whether they constantly choose this life or the transformation took away their will powers, they seem to fight to the death (unless their death would not protect their queen).

WoH1 tries to retaliate against Kadmos. Kadmos is able to protect himself, BUT ONLY if Kadmos is willing to use his magic to protect himself.

WoH2 feels the pain from simply striking Omeros and is angered by all of the pain Kelnes unleashed. As such, he turns his attention to Kelnes. Kelnes narrowly dodges the tail and fangs, but is slashed by a back handed claw.

WoH3 is stung by the thunder of Chironides, but it is clear he may as well stab himself in the heart than actually try to land a hit on the centaur. He sees his fellow warrior struggling with Kelnes and elects to help attack him, flanking as he does (+2 for flanking). The resonance saves Kelnes from the constrict, though it seemed unnecessary from saving him from the claw and fangs afterwards.
OOC:

Summary:
Kelnes takes 13 slashing damage, reduced to 6 by resistance. Otherwise they missed all their attacks. This group optimized their ACs. The worst part is, aside from a cloak of protection or two, this is all class features doing this. There's no "well, gotta ban that magic item in the future" going on, hahaha.

@GreyWord,@valdattaMadun,@annex you are up. Note: Omeros is poisoned, thus disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks. there is no repeat save at the end of his turn.

I appreciate the honesty. You can have a point of inspiration.

As a result, you were constricted after all for 10 damage reduced to 5, and now grappled and restrained escape DC 15. The other warrior would have also hit with his Constrict for 8 damage reduced to 4, but I will say you can't be actively constricted by more than 1 of them so it was more like a tail slap.the other 4 attacks appear to have still missed.

Worshiper of Hythonia

Kadmos lands 2 good slashes, though the first was blocked by the warrior's claws.

The three warriors are well aware that their lives are about to end, but their zealous fury continues on.

WoH1 attempts to strike Kadmos as before. Everything is blocked, though Kadmos is forced to use magic to protect himself if he doesn't want to be hurt by a vicious bite.

WoH2, who is restraining Kelnes, follows up on him with all of his attacks. Each and every attack lands, though aside from the poison in the bite Kelnes resists the damage.

WoH3, feeling the resonance from the thunder gauntlet earlier, decides to go for Omeros, not aware of the armor. Omeros is protected by the disadvantage, though in the long run Omeros may have preferred to be hit as it would have killed the warrior.

You say O26, but also next to the ranger. O26 is pretty far from the ranger. Where did you want to go? Keep in mind that allies and corpses are difficult terrain.

5 more? You should have 4 more, unless I forgot a approved a magic item to increase your proficiency bonus. I now a lot of newer options have language where if something doesn't change a failure to a success, you don't expend it, but I think this doesn't have that language.

I don't believe you can use the jumping rules to overcome the corpse as difficult terrain. if you were under the effect of something like the jump spell, it may be a different story. A large creature is still fairly tall when fallen over. You can make it to 022. I'll move you there and have you take the dodge action like you said.

Hythonia

The final warrior falls dead at Omero's hands. Hythonia's voice rings out, echoing as if from everywhere. "Those fools served their purpose. I am ready to slay you all by my own hands." At that, Hythonia suddenly appears to the east over the water. She drops 2 empty vials in the water, licking her lips. She seems more vicious than before. "The best thing about you heroes what you bring with you. I will enjoy seeing what I have for next time when you are all dead or stone."

With that, her lair activates, returning to the actions they had been previously. Spectral snakes appear everywhere, biting everyone.

Hythonia

Hythonia flinches from the small barrage of the magic missile and the surprising force of the firebolt. She looked at the her options. Chironodes was too far away, as was Isaiah. She never saw Kelnes use much in the realm of ranged weaponry, the Kadmos had an annoying cantrip but otherwise was in the same boat. She made a devilish grin and went over to Omeros, someone she recognized as having some decent ranged options. Floating 15 feet away from Omeros, she reached out with her floating snakey lower half to grab him and pull him up. She seems more accurate than usual, potentially a result for the vial that was now empty and floating in the water. Despite the starry form, the tail manages to connect. Omero's icey armor only blocks a minor amount, but it is enough to send the chills up Hythonia's spine. She pulls Omeros up closer, lashes out with her other attacks, and then drops Omeros into the water as she had done to Kadmos earlier.
OOC:
Summary:
Hythonia deals 20 bludgeoning, 11 slashing, 7 poison, and 38 bludgeoning damage to Omeros (76 total if nothing changed, 1 point absorbed by armor of agathys)

Omeros is now in the water. Since he cannot move, he sinks to the bottom, which is about 20 feet deep. he is already poisoned so no need for the save.

Hythonia

Hythonia lets out a loud screech as the ray of light and following slams hit her. Infuriated, she uses her legendary action to move her speed, no opportunity attacks, towards Isaiah, the source of the elemental and damage. With Omeros's turn ending, she moves again to finish approaching Isaiah. As Kelnes's turn ends, she lunches at him with her snakey hair (reach 10 feet, so she is 10 feet away from Isaiah in the air).
OOC:
Hythonia's petrifying gaze only matters if the target started its turn within 30 feet of hythonia. Since Isaiah's turn started with him far away, he can be looking at her and no problems. However, when he starts his next turn he will have to make a decision, if Hythonia is still around.
As that concludes, the ranger confusingly meanders north, climbing over the corpse of the elite warrior, and the lair hums with magic as the statues in the area temporarily animate and lunch for everyone they can (those in the are with pillars, statues aren't anywhere else).
OOC:
Summary:
Isaiah takes 22 bludgeoning damage (due to dragon form, no concentration roll)
Kelnes takes 7 bludgeoning damage, reduced to 3 by resistance, and is grappled until the next lair action or unless he escapes the grapple with a DC 15 Athletics/Acrobatics with his action.

The statues are not combatants, but petrified people that magically moved temporarily under the lair's command.

Chironides fires, narrowly missing the first beam, firing wide with the second, and landing a strong hit on the third. Kadmos fires his bot, but it just isn't quite enough to get past Hythonia's armor.

Hythonia ignores the minor damage from the others and attempts to constrict Isaiah. With a success, she flies as far as she can, bashing Isaiah as she goes, before dropping him in the water as she did Omeros.

Kelnes is grappled and is within 30 feet of Hythonia, so he needs to decide if he averts his gaze.
Omeros is in the water. he cannot see Hythonia from where he is. Unless you can fly or climb walls automatically, he will need to either swim south or attempt a DC 20 Athletics check to climb the smooth wall while wet and dash to do so as the wall is 20 feet high.

She is 20 feet off the ground, as she was above Isaiah and her constrict had a 20 foot reach.

I realize i didn't have Hythonia take any legendary actions. I'll have her take all of her legendary actions after Kadmos goes.
Jul 19, 2024 3:35 pm
OOC:
Can I make an Athletics check as part of my movement to high jump more than the 7 feet I can high jump standard?
Jul 19, 2024 3:56 pm
I will say yes, but the DC for the athletics check will be 20 due to how high above what you normally can jump you are trying, and you'll get 1 attack on a success as you would fall before a 2nd strike could be achieved. If you do happen to get a nat20 on the check, you can make 2 swings before you fall. Since you would fall over 10 feet, you will take 1d6 damage from the fall.

to add some realism, i'll say that you use one of the pillars to "run up" a bit before you kick off it for the attack.

As a quick reminder, Hythonia is bloodied, and thus she is susceptible to spells that could control her. This version i'm testing for legendary resistance does not have charges. she is either above half and immune to below half and vulnerable.

Alright, @GreyWord,@valdattaMadun,@annex you all are up.

Isaiah is dying, but aside from him being seen being thrown into the water no one knows he is dying.

Kelnes is fine, though Hythonia being able to fly is a real problem. She is 10 feet off the ground. Also, he needs to decide if he is averting his gaze.

Omeros is swimming, but no one knows he is ok.

Remember you have healing potions and I'll say you can take them off of each other to give as i'd assume they are on your belts in order to not need an entire action to pull a potion out.

Chironides is now the last one standing (since omeros is swimming), though he is not able to act just yet. Will Omeros and Chironides be able to kill her in time? Will Isaiah, Kelnes, or Kadmos be as lucky as Omeros? Will the ranger be of any help?

Just want to confirm something as this is getting hairy. Are you taking the dash action to get all the way to kelnes this turn, the dodge action to counteract the fact that you are averting your gaze, or the disengage action as Hythonia will get an opportunity attack against you?
Jul 20, 2024 12:30 pm
Did not realize averting gaze is a dodge action. Movement of 70 should take me there or very close. Action to help ranger up unless he can do some fancy horse riding stuff. Let her take he opportunity attack

I think the concept is if you are averting your gaze shr has advantage. If you dodge she has disadvantage. So Dodging makes it a straight roll

Yes, this is what I am referring to. You are averting your gaze, thus she is effectively invisible to you to avoid the Con save.

If you dash or dodge, she will take an opportunity attack, though with dash she will have advantage and with dodge it will be a normal roll (adv. & dis. adv. cancel out). If you disengage, she will have advantage on attacks during her turn but you won't trigger the opportunity attack.

As for for the ranger, I'll say he can grab on to you with his reaction, though since he didn't hold his action to do so he isn't riding so much as being dragged along.

@Basil 2 quick questions. 1: If you speed really is 70, you can make it to the double doors and I think still have 10 feet left. How far are you wanting to actually go? 2: You say you are not looking at Hythonia as you run away, but after you move some, are you averting your gaze? Since she was within 30 feet of you at the start of your turn, if you don't avert your gaze by the end of your turn, if she does chase you the moment she is 30 feet away you would need to make the save.

But if she is 30' behind me and im not looking back...wouldnt that be sufficient to avoid her gaze? If not ill take my chances with her gaze, at this point its less dangerous than another hit. Im hoping to draw her away long enough to Omeros to perhaps help get some of the fallen to their feet... or give him a sec to catch their breath... If you look up after you get 30 feet away and don't keep averting, and she gets within 30 feet later, since she was 30 feet away or less when you started your turn, you would have looked at her in the meantime. It is your risk to take.

From your current location, you would have advantage as you are an unseen attacker, though she would have 3/4 cover as she is about 40 feet above you and thus a lot of the platform blocks her body.

If you wanted to remove the cover, you'd have to get up on the platform. Her passive perception is 19, and a stealth check would be needed to approach unseen. Getting up the wall is a DC 20 athletics check, and she'd hear the splash if you fell back in. If Chironides is not fighting anymore, we can exit combat and you can take the time needed to swim south to the platform to easily get out.

Basil says:

Is the goal to get her to chase you or to get away and catch your breath? Plus, he's poisoned and only has a +6 to hit so he'd need to roll a 19 or 20 on both dice with disadvantage to hit. She is still aware of you, so no advantage as you are not unseen.

If you are in the water, she has 3/4 cover due to the angle making the platform cover so much of her. If you want to climb up, you will need to take the dash action as the wall is at least 20 feet high and you spend 2 feet per 1 foot you climb if you don't have a climb speed. You could climb (DC 20 athletics) and then hide behind a pillar (DC 19 Stealth). As for advantage, i'll give you advantage on 1 stealth check if combat has ended, as she will assume she has won. If she is still being attacked, she will be on edge and thus no advantage as she is still looking around her for threats.

You refuse to look at me, but I can change that. Try anything funny, and I fill force you to look into my eyes and you will return to stone as they had found you." The main doors have been closed. Unless you can target her behind full cover, it will take your action to open the doors due to their weight, so you can't run up, open, and still attack.

I interpreted the "go hide. i'll distract her long enough you can slip back inside" as "go inside now while I distract her and hide". This means both he would not be riding you at this time and he would be inside while you are outside. We can retcon this once, but since this is text based clarity is king.

As for breaking through the wall, the DMG isn't very helpful. It mostly just summarizes to "stone has 17 AC and large resilient structures have 27 (5d10) hit points, oh and it might have a damage threshold". A lot of DMs i've heard of use the spell wall of stone to simulate well made stone walls. Under that language, the wall is likely 5 feet thick (to hold such heavy doors) at least and thus has an AC of 15 and 150 hit points (30 * 5). The first option seems a little weak to me, so i'll go with the 2nd.

Assuming you use the warhammer and use extra attack to attack twice per round and deal double damage from the feature of the mason's tools, it would take an average of 4 rounds to break through a section of the wall (42 dmg per round, 150/42 = roughly 3.5). Booming blade does less than extra attack so I'd assume that. Based on how loud that would be, I'd say round 1 she doesn't hear it, round 2 she hears it, round 3 she realizes what that means and probably does something, and round 4 you break through.

Thoughts on both topics?
Jul 23, 2024 6:27 pm
You are correct on the clarity... as far as the breaking goes I leave it up for the DM to determine how resilent a wall is. 4 rounds may sound like a long time... and it is in combat but for a dude to break through a 5' stone wall in less than 30 seconds is frightening!

Also im not going for a full, knock down a section of wall... just a hole big enoug for someone to shoot through 3x3 at its largest.

Ok, since it will take a couple rounds, this will give Omeros some time to act, so let's see what he's doing in the meantime.

OOC:
Not sure where we are in initiative, but I'm rolling a death save.

Ooohhh... 2 and 2! Next save it for all the marbles!

Death Save (DC 10) - (1d20)

More suicidal moves. Omeros tried to climb out of the water and hide behind a pillar.

Rolls

Omeros falls back in the water, with a loud splash. Hythonia looks over where the sound came from, but Omeros was able to dive deep enough that she did not spot him.

Chironides begins breaking through the wall. For now, only he knows this is happening (3 rounds to breakthrough. Next round Hythonia starts hearing Chironides work).
OOC:
@annex While Basil works on breaking through the wall, Omeros can go again. He doesn't know what Chironides is doing.

If anyone else is still making death saves, go ahead and make another.

OOC:
One way or another, this is my last death save...

And Kadmos dies in a heap on the floor, a failure to the King and to Iroas.

It seemed almost impossible: climb and be seen or fall and be unseen. Perhaps falling and being seen was the best way to go. If any others lived, perhaps Omeros could give them a chance at avenging him.

Hythonia

Hythonia turns her head as she hears the splash. "That is the second time. Something is here. Did one of those lowly warriors live after all?" She turns to look and see Omeros and grins. "Ah, satyr. It seems you did not drown after all. You are quite the warrior. I see you have a spell ready. Do you wish to keep this going? How about I offer you a deal. Become one of my worshipers, and perhaps I will promote you to an elite warrior. If you show undying loyalty, perhaps I will let you keep your free will. What do you say?"

Chironides continues his work. The sound is faint, but Hythonia's ear twitches. "Do you hear something?"
OOC:
Chironides has completed round 2 of 4 to break through the wall.
Jul 26, 2024 4:31 am
"Erebos take you, harridan!" Omeros spat back, defiantly refusing her offer!
Jul 26, 2024 8:04 pm
OOC:
@annex You may take another turns worth of actions. No point in rolling stealth anymore. You aren't sure what the sound is, but you hear a slamming sound by the double doors to south too.
Jul 27, 2024 4:45 am
"See me, Hythonia! Feel the wrath of Omeros! Feel the storm of Keranos!"

Blazing Invictus fired three force beams while one of the stars orbiting Omeros flew at Hythonia!
OOC:
Hythie's still the target of my
[ +- ] Hexblade's Curse.
That grants me
[ +- ] Armor of Hexes.

The first beam of Omeros's eldrtich blast hits Hythonia in the forehead and she yells in anger. The second looks to be an even cleaner shot, but the poison makes Omeros hold his stomach just as he aims and it goes wild. The second does the same, but he focuses long enough to fire the crown of stars mote and hits Hythonia in the chest. Hythonia reals back, surprised to get hurt so much in a small amount of time.

Chironides continues his bashing of the wall. He sees a small glimmer of light, but not enough for anything to fire through. He knows he will have a hole on his next turn.

Hythonia, looks at Omeros in pure anger, with a small hint of fear.
OOC:
She is 12 damage away from dead. She is going to use her legendary actions and then take her turn, but I need to confirm: @Basil Is Omeros under the effect of armor of agathys, or just crown of stars? I know both don't require concentration, and I may have missed if you casted it again since you popped up with 1 hp.

Hythonia
OOC:
Well, Hythonia has basically lost, at this point. All her attacks are melee, so at best she gets a crit and finishes Omeros but dies in the process. Being CR 17 in a world of magic like Theros, i'm going to have her act like she knows what that ice armor on you is and what it means. Reminder, Rules as Written you can only make multiple grapple attempts if you have extra attack and take the attack action, but I tend to house rule it that monsters can make multiple grapple attempts if they have multiattack and can only swap attacks for grapples if the original attack involved an appendage that could grapple, like claws or a tail that can constrict, but could not replace Snakey hair with a grapple since there is no evidence she can grapple with the hair.
Hythonia sees the hole forming and flies over to Omeros, using her claws and tail not to strike at Omeros but to simply try to grab him. She succeeds in doing so, lifts him out of the water, and say, "If i can't strike you, I will make you look deep into my eyes."
OOC:
Hythonia has a mythic action she can only use in the 2nd phase of the fight.
[ +- ] Mythic Action
@Basil Omeros goes after Hythonia. He can take his turn, and if Hythonia is still alive then Hythonia will force Omeros to make a DC 19 Con save vs her gaze, no matter if he chooses to avert or not. If Omeros can hit her, he may kill her. If he misses all his attacks, he will need to hope he isn't turned to stone.

After that is resolved, Chironides will use his action to finish the whole he was making.

Omeros fires his 3 blasts. The first glances off of her shoulder armor, but the second, third, and follow up bolt of light all strike her in the chest. she drops Omeros back into the water, and falls into the water just after him. Bubbles rise up from the water as she takes her last breath underwater, and seconds later nothing. Her corpse sinks to the bottom, blood rising to the spot she hit the water. Hythonia lies dead at the bottom of the poisoned water.

Chironides breaks through the wall, looks for Hythonia, and sees only his dead or unconscious allies. He enters and hears Omeros celebrating as it hits him that she is dead. The two meet up, find that Kelnes is still alive, and locate the dead bodies of Kadmos and Isaiah. With a potion of healing, Kelnes is brought back. The group finds the unconscious daughter of the king they came to save, still human. Knowing that they may be able to request the gods Isaiah and Kadmos serve to resurrect them, the group takes the bodies of their friends with them. With Hythonia dead and her worshipers scares, the party is able to safely make it back to the beach.

Kelnes uses his swimming ability, he pulls the boat the group used to get through the sharp rocks back to the main boat. The captain congratulates you all on success and gives his condolences on the 2 deaths. After only 3 days, you make it back to the king, visit some people that can cast raise dead on Isaiah and Kadmos, and receive your rewards.
