Your contact is a woman named Thessa Saris in the settlement of Eronoss; should be easy to find in such a small place. You’re supposed to meet her in three day’s time at the Raging Rancor, which is apparently the only cantina in town.
The trip through hyperspace has been boring and uneventful, and everyone greets the chime of reversion with relief. As the stream of stars slows to myriad points, the lush planet appears before you.

You only have a moment to enjoy the view before your ship is rocked by a small explosion, and proximity sensors begin blaring the obvious…you are under attack!

The sensor board comes to life in front of him. The glow of the screen reflected in his determined stare. His fingers fly across the keys as he attempts to dissect the pirate ship's strategy and tactics.
Despite the situation he chuckles to himself as he hears Jack mock the pirate captain's tone. Yeah, no matter how this turns out, it beats the hell out of dying a slow death behind a desk in the middle of nowhere.

"So, who else is looking forward to being planetside?" Jack asks, grinning, even if he's unable to hear them without the intercom, "I'm looking forward to the Raging Rancor, personally; sounds like a real cozy place."
Jack continues to ramble on, unaware of the rest of the crew's hard work, "Still, anything's got to be better than another chain cantina like the Blasted Asteroid. That place is all over the galaxy."
Although it was possible the pirates were just waiting to ambush any easy target, it would be foolish of them to not act as though they were targeted specifically. People in this line of work tended to live longer lives when they tended a bit toward paranoia. No, their guards should be up until the exchange was made.
The hagler in him couldn't help but begin calculating all the possibilities for change in the upcoming negotiation. Perhaps this cargo was worth more than what was on offer. It was worth keeping in mind if Chuck tries to play any games.
He was doing it again...borrowing trouble. Anticipating every possible avenue and outcome instead of going with the flow of events. He chided himself inwardly and returned his mind to the moment. How could he help the crew in the here and now?...
"I wonder how they are treating Ju? I hope they are at least letting him scavenge. He'll need some amount of money saved up once the debt is off him. He'll be on his feet again."
He waits for Ada to tell them they either are no longer on high alert, or are entering the atmosphere of Dantooine
Ada plots the final course to the settlement and announces over the comms, "I'm going to call all-clear. Them folks ain't coming back."
Eventually he speaks up, talking idly while he looks at the details of Dantooine on the scanner, "Doing alright, Ada?"
As the two turn their attention to him, Savi continues. "I said it at the time and was shouted down, but I'll say it again. When you take on a cargo without knowing what it is, you can't be surprised when things go sideways."
Savi could tell by their expressions that they didn't want to hear it, but he had to get it out for once and for all. "If those containers prove to be filled with drugged sentients in deep cryo we are unwittingly delivering into slavery..." he let the statement trail off.
"I just want to hear you say we aren't dumb enough or desperate enough to let this become a habit. I don't like being played for a fool."
Jack can't help but glance at Ada, feeling a pang of guilt in knowing that, when it comes to her and Doc, he's at fault for putting them in this situation. He inhales slowly through his nose, exhaling sharply as he replies calmly to Doc, "No one needs to scan the crates. No one needs to concern themselves about what's in them, because we are past that point. So, as you said, Doc, lets just get the job done quick."
"If you think my issue is with breaking the law, you haven't been paying attention. As I said when I joined up, as long as we don't run slaves or hurt younglings, I'm on board for just about anything." He took a beat and composed his breath before continuing. The last thing he intended was to start a heated debate. But a few things needed to be made clear or this wasn't going to work.
He fixed Jack with his best 'I'm not your enemy' look and continued calmly, "There is an inherent problem with taking on cargo we haven't vetted. Beyond the obvious issues around ship safety, if we become known for those kinds of loose practices it is not a matter of "if" but of "when" someone will use that habit to make some easy credits at our expense."
"You're an experienced man. I know you know what I'm talking about. I take your point that we don't have the luxury to be picky, but if we aren't cautious at all, we will be dead sooner rather than later. And if it is going to be the regular practice of this crew to trust blindly, which is what we're doing by not caring about the contents of our hold, then please tell me now so I can finish this run with you, take my share, and part ways amicably."
With that said, Savi sits back and awaits the crew's response. In the short time they've been together, he has already come to care about these people. He sincerely hoped he wouldn't have to leave the ship, especially not on Dantooine of all places. But a crew that doesn't care to check what's in their hold is not one that is long for this galaxy. Savi didn't fear the end, but he was absolutely determined his wasn't going to be a stupid death.
He takes a deep breath, turning in his chair to look Savi calmly in the eye, "I'm not blindly trusting Chusk; in fact, I doubt anyone here is. I don't trust him, or any of our typical contacts, more than I trust a fire to not burn me if I touched it. Unfortunately, due to our lifestyle, chosen or otherwise, we have to stick close to that fire. Doesn't mean I trust it; You aren't going to see me at this exchange without pistols at my hip."
"Distrust and risk is the job, Savi. It's every job. We get paid based on how far we take the cargo, the space it takes up in our hold, and the fact that we'll be in trouble if we're caught with it; not based on what's in it. No one would hire us if they didn't make easy credits at our expense. But, if we didn't take the job, someone else would've, and that would be lost food-on-the-table, lost ship repairs, lost fuel, and personal expenses, like paying off old debts." Jack looks all too serious when he speaks about a lack of credits, his face a grave mask that depicts a subtle sense of fear. "If we can't afford to eat; if we can't afford to take off, then we can't do any work. So we have to take jobs, whether we like the terms or not, if there aren't others to take at the time."
"I don't care what's in the crates because it isn't my place to know. We treat it as dangerous as could be and assume that Chusk told us what we need to know; He needs us to succeed as much as we need him to pay us for it."
"...we have no reason to believe its slaves anymore than anything else. It could be dust, weapons, or naked pictures of officials for all I care. Lets just deliver the cargo and move on. I'd hate to see you go over a principle like that Savi, but that is the nature of this life." He pauses for a moment then says, "I will say this too. Sticking to principles like that wont just get you off this ship, but it'll get you killed. One way or another."
"Doc, I wouldn't mind you trying to look at the crates some, so long as you don't disturb them any."
Savi prides himself on his words and they seem to be failing him which is bringing out a bit of stress, so he breathes again for a moment. "My issue is with not taking at least minimal precaution to ensure we don't have a bomb, just for example, in the damn hold. I'm not saying we have to have complete confirmation about the contents, but at least make our contacts lie to us. Then if the lie turns out to damage us, we earn a reputation by paying that damage back ten fold. Eventually people won't screw with taking chances by crossing us."
"If this run were a deal breaker for me I wouldn't have come this far. I'm happy to see it through. I just think we need to take at least some minimal precautions in the future. If someone wants us to transport unnamed cargo, then the rates go up. Way up. Otherwise, tell us what we are hauling so we don't do something stupid and avoidable with it."
Savi scans the cockpit and crew trying to read their faces to see if at least the slightest concession of a point is visible.
He turns to head to the cargo are and pauses for a moment before turning slightly back to the others "It also occurs to me that Chusk could be the one behind the attempted ambush. Wouldn't put it past him to try and engineer the situation to place us firmly in his pocket with no way out"
With that he leaves and heads to take a look at the cargo.

"But that's assuming it's something we don't like. If he's just being protective about his cargo, and has it mislabeled for our own protection---and his---then we're only setting ourselves up for failure." Jack looks at Ada and gestures with his explanation, "If he looks you in the eye when we see him again to get paid and asks if you took a peek, do you feel confident you can stay straight-faced and lie? Do you think we all could? Crime bosses tend to not get where they are without being able to spot a liar."
"We should do the work, get paid, and move on."
"The damage is done. It's too late to be smart with this run. We've already put ourselves in a weak and dangerous position. Tampering with the shipment only weakens it further." Savi nods toward Jack and continues, "We hit atmo as soon as possible and get this deal done. We'll be resolved to be smarter moving forward."
With a sly wink he slips in, "And for the record, you don't have me on board because of my devastating good looks. I could look him in the eye and tell him his mother is a Hutt and he'd believe it."
"These are possibilities on every job. The fact of the matter is that we're mutts, kicked around whenever someone thinks they can get away with it because they know we don't have an alternative. If we act like we're the bosses---demanding certain terms and the like---then we don't get jobs or we get shot at. If we demand more pay then we don't get jobs or we get shot at when they don't want to pay up the extra price. As mutts, we don't have a lot of options in that regard." Jack grins, and continues with a reassuring tone, "But that's okay. We can be smart mutts, too. We're not going to assume anything about the crate's contents, we're going to go to our meetings armed, and we're going to keep our eyes open for things that look suspicious or give us cause for concern. Not everyone is out there to screw us over, and we can't alienate them by always behaving like they are. But, yes, that's dangerous." Jack frowns, growing frustrated that he can't seem to get his point across as well as he'd like, "To the ones that do want to kick us, we can't be the ones that fire the first shot, so to speak. It'll burn us for other jobs if we do.
"But we can be armed and we can be ready to fire back. I'm not worried about the contents of the crate because Chusk hasn't given me cause to worry yet. But I'll be ready when and if he does." Jack sucks on his teeth in thought for a moment and then takes a deep breath, "Look, I realize I'm not the only one on board, but that's my thoughts on it. This isn't some deal-breaker for me, and I'm not abandoning ship if you don't agree with me---frankly because I can't afford to---but we don't live for any one job. We need to think about the big picture. We need to think about every job when we take action, and not just one."
Jack then rubs his eyes again, gesturing to Ada, "Please tell me we're close."
And Ada does that...using whatever communications info was given for contacting Sariss.
With that, Jack will head off into the settlement in search of the cantina.
Savi checks to make sure his blaster is secure at the small of his back - hidden yet readily accessible in case the worst case scenario rears its ugly head. He didn't expect to use it, however. His silver tongue was the only weapon he tyoically needed in these types of situations. He would get the crew paid, and paid well for this mission. But he was determined, above all else, to get the job completed. Something about this run made him uncomfortable. The sooner it was done the sooner they could move on to more lucrative missions.
"Coming Avox?"
"Why are they all bunched up like that? Plenty of room on this planet." Avox asks internally.
As he observes the comings and goings he notices that there is no enforcement around here anywhere. Odd, considering it is not terribly far from the starport. As they pass tight alleys and secluded corners in the market he starts to figure it out. All the commotion masks several substance exchanges and user meet-ups.
"Dusters? No it could be Death Sticks." He thinks. "Maybe that's what Chusk is having us deliver. Could be his big move to get in on the drug market here. I wonder who has this turf now; they wouldn't like that kind of thing."
Avox keeps to his own business and keeps with the group. Ignoring merchants peddling their merchandise at him as he passes.
Jack simply turns away, ignoring what he'd seen and letting the Twi'lek get away with her prize. "Supisy," he mutters under his breath in Ryl. He makes a mental note to not let anyone get too close to his pockets.
Savi takes a great deal of delight in people watching. As he strolls with the group he eavesdrops on snippets of the varied conversations swirling about him. A laborer barks at his compatriot who had dropped his end of a crate they were transporting. A clumsy Twi'lek excuses herself for running into a human in the crowd. The ubiquitous merchant haggling with a customer unwilling to pay exorbitant prices. He'd seen it all a million times before, and yet every crowd, every conversation, every instance was unique.
Every interaction told him about the people having them. Savi gleaned information from linguistic exchanges the way others might infer from appearances, garb, or mannerisms. Every phrase, how it was crafted, what it said, what it implied, revealed culture, identity, and motivation.
As he drifted among the clouds of conversation, Savi was learning a great deal.
He smiled as he accompanied his companions toward, hopefully, an interesting negotiation.

Jack notices that Skent's friends have stopped as well, and several of them have their eyes, stalks, or sensors fixed on the credstik in Savi's hand.
Savi knows avarice when he sees it...some of those urchins may not be as young as they pretend.
"Then Jack, Ada, and Bo come in after. Try not to seem associated with us, and back us up if we need it." He looks between his teammates as he airs the suggestion.
As a plan is forming in the group, Jack starts backing up toward the establishment, arms out to the side, "How about we walk into the cantina - get a drink if you need to relax - and just meet with this Thessa woman nice, calm, and friendly; Like people sometimes do." With that, Jack will turn and start walking toward the door, "If you don't want to look like you're with us, feel free."
Looking up from his brief exchange, Savi discovers the group in the process of hatching two plans simultaneously. With a sigh he points out, "Let's not put all our creds in one investment. Bo, feel free to be inconspicuous. Enjoy a drink and keep an eye on us in case we need you. Jack..." Savi shakes his head as Jack spins on his heel and walks into the cantina. There's no point trying to get that one to do anything other than what he wants.
Savi smiles despite it all. Jack's straight forward approach could get them in trouble from time to time, but it also got them through a lot of tough scrapes. He knew if they got into trouble in there Jack would be all over it like a Hutt on a Twi'lek.
Turning to Avox he nods and says, "Let's go."
Skent runs up to a tired-looking Rodian who is cleaning the tables and begins babbling excitedly in his native tongue. She looks up at Jack as he enters with a puzzled expression. He is able to catch the tail-end of the monologue, something about banthas.

"Your boy was very helpful and courteous. I hope it was ok for us to reward him for his help."
As the woman regards the slim stick in obvious contemplation, Savi continues, "We are here to meet with a person by the name of Thessa. Do you know of her? Can you tell us anything about her? Or, if not, would you be so kind as to point her out by giving us a discreet signal when you see her?"
He gives the Rodian server his most charming smile, "Any help would be appreciated."
Once Wre leaves, Jack will turn to Savi and waggle his eyebrows, saying, "Crazy homesteaders, huh?" He shifts in his seat, getting more comfortable. He'll lean back and place his arms up in a restful position, "Sounds like a good cause. Downright humanitarian, even."
Savi sighs and turns back to the cantina vista before him, "Let's not get into it all over again. When she comes out, let me do my job. I don't peer over your shoulder and tell you how to aim the cannon on the ship."
He turns his head slightly toward the armored man behind him, "Avox, stay sharp. This seems straight forward, but we all know encounters like those can sometimes be the most troublesome. Keep an eye out. I'll get us paid, and we can get out of here and on to the next job."

He fought the urge to shake his head and chuckle. No, it was a serious miscalculation on her part to assume he didn't know exactly what he was doing. Maybe I can use that to our advantage if Jack runs into trouble. For now, he seems to have it, and her, under control.
Jack's comments interrupt Savi's internal monologue, and it took all his political training to not stop fully in his tracks and gape. Somehow, he managed to maintain his inscrutable expression. This barve never ceases to surprise me. If he had been raised under different circumstances and with different opportunities, he'd probably be running the Senate right now.

2000 did seem a trifling amount. He wasn't impressed.
He smiles and allows his frame to visibly relax a bit. "We'd be more than happy to continue doing business with you. And I'm confident the trust between us will continue to grow," with a broad smile he adds, "and, of course, our mutual profits."
As Savi smiles she grows more serious, and nods.
She turns to Jack as he asks his question, and her eyebrows raise. "Sontebren? That old blowhard? He's a pirate, but nothing to worry about. Flies an old YT, and thinks he is much more charming than evidence suggests."
Jack then went quiet, giving Savi and Thessa a chance to work out whatever details remained in the negotiations.
As he begins to escort Thessa down the ramp toward her cargo he continues in a more conversational tone, "Did you have a job in mind or should we simply remain in touch?"

"We're fine with either," Jack says, offering a smile, "Do you have other information to go on? If not, we're capable of doing the research, but from the sound of it you might have a mark in mind."
His next question was addressed upon hearing Jack ask for further information in order to help choose between two seemingly equally profitable jobs. Desite himself, he didn't react to the metallic bang followed by an amusing Rodian curse. Savi, instead, crossed his arms over his chest and settled in for Thessa's reply.
"If we're shipless, we're jobless, so the ship should come first." Jack shrugs, "That's my vote, anyway."
"Regardless," Savi sighs, "Jack is right. The logic is unassailable. No ship, no job, no creds. Simple."
He then turns to speak to the group as a whole, gesturing with his arms as he explains, "How 'bout this: We get paid; Ship gets repaired; What's left after that is considered our profit and a percentage - lets say half of the profit - goes to a group fund; We split the rest evenly."
"The group fund is in part for ship upgrades, because we need something besides those peashooters eventually, as well as for food and fuel, but also for job necessities. Maybe I set a precedent today, but I don't want to be in the habit of paying our docking bill every stop, so the group fund would pay for that, but also, what if a job demanded we each have, say, climbing gear? Do we just say, 'Oh, no, we can't do that,' or do we get the gear? If we get gear for each of us, does each of us pay independently? What if one of us..." Jack not-so-coincidentally happens to look in Avox' direction as he says this, "...Blew all of his credits on something stupid already; who foots the bill for him? What if a mission calls for us to have a speeder? Who's buying that? A group fund would make that easy, and would mean that whatever we get independently, while less, is ours, and we can spend it as we like without worrying about getting fed, or saving up enough for something that the next job needs."
"The credits aren't going anywhere, lets get our next job lined up then discuss a plan in the relative privacy of hyperspace."
"And," Jack says, shrugging and grinning that typical grin of his, "We'll be here an hour or so while Thessa gets it all set up, right?"
"The ship is our ticket to credits, plain and simple. Without its upkeep, this whole venture falls apart and each of us is, again, on his or her own to scrape an existence out of this crappy universe. I believe we'd all survive just fine, but together we have an opportunity to do more. We have a chance at real profits. But we need to work together and that starts with taking care of one another - including, and even especially, the ship."
He turns to Doc and corrects, "I believe we're getting thirty-three hundred credits, if you factor the 10% bonus." He looks to Savi for confirmation, but continues, "The point isn't about just refueling and repairing the ship when it needs it. We do need that, but another point of a ship's fund is so that as we buy things for ourselves, we can also buy things for the ship. Who cares if you buy yourself that new, fancy doctor's bag, or if Avox buys himself the biggest assault rifle he can find. If the ship goes down, we all go down. We need to keep it up to par with the jobs that we take on."
"I don't think thirty percent is going to cut it for doing that. Ship parts are not cheap, by any means. I can get myself a blaster pistol for four-hundred credits. Even a heavy blaster is seven-hundred, by standard rates. I can get some good attachments for it for about five-hundred, and get a tech to mod it like mad for one-hundred to three-hundred. A medium laser cannon costs about seven grand, and modding it is about another thirty-five-hundred, and we'd like to have more than one." Jack clicks his tongue in irritation, shifting his weight from one foot to the other and looking up at the ship to which they were referring. "Not to mention you plan on taking fuel, food and other expenses out of this thirty percent?"
He shakes his head, "Just doesn't sound realistic to me." He shrugs, "But, again, I'm not the whole group, and I can only offer my opinion."

"Don't spend it all in one place," Jack will say. At the earliest convenience, Jack will be sure to divide the credits from the account that Thessa transferred it all to, distributing it all to the appropriate credsticks. Afterward, should nothing happen in the meantime, Jack will return to the Raging Rancor for a drink and some food.
He waits for the others to chime in then walks back to the cantina with whomever opts in.
With a genuine smile on his face he leans forward, takes his beer, and asks, "Why can you never count on a Chandra-fan to pick you the tab?"
Seeing the surprised and confused looks on the other two as they pause mid-sip, he continues, "Because they're always a little short."
Despite their groans, Savi gives a good belly laugh and holds his glass up. "To a job done and another on the horizon." - the double entendre fully intentional.
Grateful to Savi for distracting him from that train of thought, Jack smirks at his quip, raising his drink slightly and giving a lazy "Hear, hear" in reply.
Part of him wished he wasn't in the cantina. He suddenly had an urge to ask Savi and Doc about Thessa and her 'friends,' but nothing good would come from discussing any such concerns in her place of employment. Instead, Jack just says, "As bumpy as this was, I can't imagine the next going any smoother."
He then, as he was taught, waits for his negotiating partner to speak first.
