Chapter 4: Neverlight Grove

Mar 29, 2017 3:04 pm
You set off through the Underdark, following mental directions from Stool, who seems well recovered from his difficulties.

You spend several hours in transit, and end up stumbling into a massive fungi patch. As you make your way through the fungal stalks, a mix of torchwoods providing light and the zurkhwoods providing a blend of coverage, you hear a crashing sound from the zurkhwoods and see two of these charging at you from opposite sides of the small trail you find yourselves on:

Dustin, blades flashing, plunges his weapons into the first large creature he comes to. Just as he's slipping his dagger into a particularly fleshy part of the beast, bolts of force slam into the creature, causing it to shudder. Unfortunately, this moves it just slightly away from Cemos' hammer swings. Sad for the creature, however, it doesn't notice the bear coming up on his flank with gnashing teeth. The confluence of pain causing the creature to buck in the throes of death, falling heavily to the ground, a crunchy squelch emanating from inside its carapace.

Stool, Georges, and Eldreth all leap for the second creature, weapons swinging.....

1d6 : (4) = 4

Stool Crit (MH and Sneak) - (2d6)

(23) = 5

The three friendly combatants wade in, Stool taking after his mentor and finding a particularly weak place to jam his shortsword. Eldreth misses her heavy swing, but Georges manages to find a bite with one of his strokes.

The creature reels in pain and takes an attack towards Stool. The creature's tentacle appendage slams into Stool's cap, even as the bite misses. Unfortunately, Stool is not used to this kind of poison and falls to the ground, rigid with paralysis.

Stool nods his head in the affirmative to Dustin's question.

As you continue your slow march through the fungi, you make camp for a time, undisturbed by further creatures. When you awaken, post rest, you set out once more, heading toward Neverlight Grove per Stool's instruction. You do see several strange creatures, but for they ignore you or run in fear.

You see many tiny fissures with trickles of water flowing in the direction you walk. After several hours, you find yourselves in a tunnel, where a stream likely ran once. It's narrow, sure, but plenty large enough for you to walk single file, towing the sled of goods behind you. A strange glowing lichen dimly lights your surroundings, but you feel none of the tell-tale magical contamination of the faerzress. Instead, this is merely bio-luminescent. About thirty minutes into the tunnel, you enter a hidden enchanted place, odd but serenely beautiful. You get a sweeping panoramic view of a vast mushroom forest covering every surface, ceiling included. These mushrooms cast a dazzling light show across the darkness, brilliantly colored, in some cases with shades you've never seen naturally before. On the far side of this exotic forest, you see the cavern narrow into a small ravine. Just through the ravine you catch glimpses of a majestic mushroom tower, but you cannot discern any details at this distance or in this lighting.

Pale cream and beige stalks grow thick and tall, resembling a surface world forest. Fungi grow in profusion everywhere, and it's hard to find anything resembling a path between them. The giant caps of the zurkhwood mushrooms obscure your view of the cavern's ceiling, but luminescent fungi there give off a shimmering aura. With each step you take on the soggy ground, a rank scent of decay rises around you.

This is not right! Something is wrong in the Grove, come, we must find the Sovereign! Stool thinks at you as he charges off hugging the right side vertical cliff, near to the body of water.

Dustin tries his best to follow Stool and avoid stepping on any mushrooms.
Apr 3, 2017 9:57 pm
what seems to be the problem stool?
It looks to me that people are behaving normally. Should we be ready for a fight?
cemos thinks aloud to the group as he helps pull the sleds closer to the front.I think it may be wise to stay close together.

Dustin looks to the others and pulls the hood up on his cloak of elvenkind.
Apr 3, 2017 11:37 pm
Ander moves quietly, avoiding stepping on the mushrooms as he passes. He has little to input on the subject, being a rather quiet soul himself.
Apr 4, 2017 1:49 am
Cemos seeing Dustins reaction pulls his hood up as well.eldrith make sure the others are ready, I am not sure what stool is on about but I have never seen him like this before.
Apr 5, 2017 2:02 pm
As you continue moving quickly through the forest of mushrooms, following Stool as best you can, none of you can rightly tell if something is wrong or not. This entire area is mystical and strange to you. A subtle pulse of light shifts from pink to yellow to green to purple and back again as the moss that seems to coat nearly all non-living surfaces glows and shimmers. After about 10 minutes of active walking and searching, you notice something peculiar: there is nearly no sound aside from rustling and a faint singing sound coming from the cavern with the massive fungal tower.

We are in the Fungal Wilds now, friends. I can't put my hand on what is wrong, but this isn't the Neverlight Grove that I left. I was hoping we can find our Sovereign, Phylo. He's the leader of our Circles and our community. But I can't seem to find him as yet. I'm hesitant to interrupt their work with a melding, so we may have to wait until their working time is done. In the mean time, I want to seek out Loobamub, the leader of our Circle of Hunters. Hopefully he will have information for us. Stool thinks at you as he makes his way toward a massive circular rock with several myconids arrayed around it tending to the fungus and moss on it.

Stool makes his way to the ring, and finds the largest of the myconids in the circle. They touch caps briefly and spend several long moments in silence together. After a moment, the tall myconid turns and poofs a dusting of spores over all of you.

Ahhh, welcome to Neverlight Grove softers. I am Loobamub, the leader of the Circle of Hunters. Stool has given me much insight into your recent troubles. You have our thanks for rescuing him during your escape. I have thoughts about his uneasiness with the Grove, but there are more immediate threats. A few unwelcome creatures have found their way into the Wilds. Namely a large grick has been spotted in the zurkhwoods and a large living plant mass is sucking the very life out of the soil. Both creatures need to be eradicated for the good of the Grove. Help us and we will help you in turn. he thinks at you in a grandiose voice.
Apr 5, 2017 2:17 pm
Dustin seeing no harm come to any of them lowers his hood.

We will help, where have these creatures been spotted ?
Apr 5, 2017 3:07 pm
Does the plant mass attack you? If so, what kind of attack? And, what can you tell us about the grick?
Apr 5, 2017 11:10 pm
Ander remains silent, not feeling his input is necessary.
Apr 6, 2017 12:53 am
The plant mass doesn't attack, but it leeches vital nutrients that we need to survive and offers nothing in return to support us. The grick is as all of its kind. It lies in wait around the zurkhwoods, eating anything that walks past. Most of the Circles have begun avoiding it, but if you can kill it and bring it to Basidia, he can reanimate it and it will be helpful in supporting the Circles.
Apr 6, 2017 10:56 am
I am sure we would all be willing to help in any way possible, stool has become one of our family down here and if it effects him then it effects us, having had said that we might be more of a help if you had a shop or place we could resupply with weapons, armor and potions. Because I get the feeling that these crearures will not see reason and leave the grove in peace.
Apr 6, 2017 12:39 pm
True friend Cemos, a place to maybe purchase some things or trade for them would be good. We also need someplace to store all the things we have.
Apr 7, 2017 5:22 pm
OOC:
hey so real quick guys. Are we trying to offload all the stuff we found and accumulated here ? Or are we gonna hold on to some of it? Specially the mithril, I feel like we would have talked about that. It's kinda a bit ticket item and I don't want these ppl getting in trouble for having it from the original owners or the intended recipients. I mean we salvaged it and it's not like we had a choice to kill those in possession of it at the time, they kind of attacked us. I mean is that a thing should we be worried that if somebody else finds this large shipment of mithril and this Village they might take it out on them?
Apr 7, 2017 5:46 pm
OOC:
Also a better price could almost certainly be gotten elsewhere. I wouldn't think mushrooms have much use for mithril.
Apr 7, 2017 6:34 pm
Shops? What are these 'shops' you speak of, friend of Stool? Weapons and armor are not things that we have experience with. Truly, it was a bit of a surprise that Stool now carries them like you. It would seem he's learned much in your care, different, but much. Potions we may have some that you could use, also some poisons. These are things which we brew and find helpful, but everything the community has is for the community to use. Loobamub thinks to you.

Cemosfriend, what Loobamub says is true. The myconid have no concept of currency. You've explained its use to me well enough, but it is foreign to those here. The potions may be of use, there are several that allow us to better hide in the Underdark. The poisons could be very useful. Dustinfriend has shown me much in how they can be used. I'm not sure which are already brewed, but they would be worth investigating. Loobamub, I must ask, who is this Basidia you speak of?
Is the sovereign not Phylo still?
Stool thinks back.

It is a long story, former sprout. Phylo and Basidia are both Sovereigns. Basidia came not too long ago,
several meldings ago. He is a good myconid, trying to do what he can for the Circles. Phylo has - changed. I am not at liberty to truly say more right now, but if you can help the Circles, we may be able to inform you of more. Now go, the Hunter melding is to begin soon.
Loobamub thinks back.

Stool adopts a position that you now know is his position of concern. The others are hesitant to openly ask him about his concern here and now.
Apr 7, 2017 10:47 pm
It might truly be a blessing that gold has no meaning here. for it can be used as a tool to help those in need get what they can not but at the same time I am all to familiar with how it can be abused. well at the very least we will need a place to keep our items while we help with your problem.
Apr 8, 2017 12:57 pm
Dustin nodded and thought to the Sovereign. Yes if you could just give us a place to store our items. We would be appreciative.
Apr 10, 2017 4:17 pm
So . . . which problem would you like addressed first?
Apr 10, 2017 10:34 pm

Apr 12, 2017 5:23 pm
Order matters not, both are a flagrant drain on our community. Though if you must have one, likely the mound would be better to begin with so you can go immediately from your fight with the grick to Basidia without fear of losing the corpse.
Strange things are at work in the Grove and I wouldn't want you to have something worse happen.
Apr 12, 2017 7:37 pm

The lightning arcs across the creature's body, and you hear a strange gurgling sound, almost like what it would sound like if algae were laughing. It rises to its full height, nearly twelve feet, letting loose a roar. You can see bits of fungal legs dangling from a maw rife with stone teeth and the fetid stink of decomposing plant matter. You can see, now, thick vine-encrusted legs and a pair of what could be arms stretching off the main trunk.

With that attack, COMBAT! PCs may act, including Dustin.

As the clouds roil and churn angrily, a flash of lightning streaks from the sky, striking at the horrid corruption of nature, the creature's very existence being an insult to Ander's reverence of the natural forces. Such creatures must pay with their lives for their existence.

As Dustin's bolt pierces the creature's side, you see the creature look to the unnatural storm overhead. As the lightning streaks out, it makes no effort to avoid the blast. You watch as the electrical energy flickers over the ragged wound left by the bolt and it magically knits in front of you, seeming to leave no sign of a wound. Again, that gurgling laughter roils out of the beast.

Bildaweer's missiles careen into the creature, knocking bits of mushroom and moss off into the darkness.

Georges, Eldreth, and Stool all leap to action. Francis, looks to his mace with green fire briefly before dropping it to the ground and running off into the zurkhwood stands.

Georges can't seem to find good footing or a good target and his swing go woefully wide. Stool misses the first, but manages to just barely hit it with the second. Eldreth took her time and lined up a swing with both hands, burying the head of her hammer into what could charitably be called the creature's knee!

With that in mind, Ander would not have cast Flame Blade.
Snarling, Ander's shape morphs into that of a brown bear.
OOC:
As I read the rules, your proficiency trumps the creature's when it comes to skills and attacks. A bear has 19 STR (+4) and my proficiency bonus is +3, which is the reason for the +7 to attack. The bear, however, would have a +5. @Drama, lemme know which one I should use!

All four of you leap into action, weapons flashing and claws slashing out at the plant. In short order, you have all shredded more plant material off the beast, causing it to wail in pain. Georges, Eldreth, and Stool all continue their assault. Georges continues to be vexed by his compatriot's disappearance and the strangeness of the very creature you are fighting. His blows sail wide, as does the first of Stool's swings. However, his second attack finds a particularly vulnerable place and his chest swells with pride as he watches the shortsword stab out through the creature's jaw. Eldreth takes advantage of that opportunity to take another crack at the creature's leg with a horizontal sweeping strike.

Enraged at the small creature that has seen fit to attack its legs, the beast swings both arms at Eldreth. Both connect and you watch her eyes roll into her head as the beast pulls her into its very body. As the party's turn starts, you watch the plant writhe around Eldreth's still frame, dealing double damage to her frame.

Eldreth Death Saves: 1 success, 2 failures.

PCs are up! Eldreth is fully enclosed by the creature and you cannot see her. You know she is unconscious, however, that much was clear as she was consumed.

As Dustin slashes along the creature's flank, Bildaweer's missiles slam into its 'face'. With a pirouette, the creature begins to rapidly brown and falls with a heavy thud to the ground, falling apart like a dead bundle of grass. Eldreth's still frame lies on the ground, her chest barely moving, two large bruises rapidly swelling her eyes closed.

Additionally, a bevy of assorted items fall to the ground, undoubtedly from previous kills. Upon inspection, you find:
A set of heavy metal gauntlets
A leather necklace with a set of golden hands holding three rubies.
Bloodstone (50 gp)
Chalcedony (50 gp)
Chrysoprase (50 gp)

You try grabbing the creature and heaving, but it doesn't budge. This thing is HEAVY.

Loobamub mentioned bringing the Grick back to Basidia the Sovereign, not the shambling mound. This thing weighs almost 4000 pounds.

Rubbing his arms he finally decides to move off looking for Francis.

Cemos shouts out Eldreth...Noooooo!!!!! as he runs up to her. Fear and confusion take hold of him as he kneels next to her.
You daft girl! you canne be diein on me now. Cemos takes off his gauntlets as he clutches his holy emblem with one hand. With tears in his eyes he places the other firmly on her chest. he bow his head...Dumathoin! God under the mountain, patron of earth and stone and Father of the forge. I Cemos of the clan Frost beard invoke you now... hear my plea. one of your daughters has fallen in this wicked place. even now the light of your grace turns dark in her mind. Do not turn your back on her. she has paid the ultimate price defending the week from evil. Lift her up and restore her body.

As Cemos prayes a beaming radiant light emits from his hand as he pours all he has into her.
OOC:
I would like to use all of my lay on hands for her. 5 pts for any poison and the other 20 straight into hp. I will also burn all spell slots on healing ( 2 second lvl and 3 first ) if I have to.

As Cemos lifts the mace into the air, a shimmer of magic glitters like dust around the weapon. The flaming head subtly shifts. No longer do the flames flicker from the top, they now form a luscious beard-like growth on the head of the mace, similar to Cemos' own magnificent mane.

What else is everyone doing?

Stool, you have done so well. You are officially graduated from your apprenticeship and I think with time, you may become a Sovereign yourself. To congratulate you I present you with this magic dagger. You have seen how much it has helped me and I hope it serves you equally as well.

Dustin explains how the poison reservoir works and after making sure Stool has a strong understanding of it he hands it over to his friend.

Dustin then looked to the others, What do we do about Francis ? I couldn't find him.
Apr 20, 2017 12:51 pm
well we can just abandon him. Perhaps the sovereign will be able to send people to help us find him. I think we should have eldrith and still and Georgis return to the town and inform then of what has happened and we set off to look for him. I might be able to track him.

Alright that sounds good, just don't want him running into that grick all on his own without a weapon. Speaking of, we seemed to empower this beast with lightning. Mentor Bildaweer, what do you know of Gricks so we don't make similar mistakes with it.

By the gods, we have found some loot! The gauntlets, the necklace, and one of these pearls are magical! Hold on before you touch them! Bildaweer casts good and evil on the items.

I am pretty sure that I had this spell prepared as I don't think I changed my list since the encounter with the green hag. But,
I could be wrong. I don't remember if we had a long rest either, since we've been to Stool's home. If so, I need to roll my portent rolls. Thanks Drama!

Neither Bildaweer or Dustin remember much of anything about Gricks.
OOC:
Yes, it would be survival to try finding tracks. It is super wet terrain here, so it would be a pretty solid DC to try finding anything. As for having the spell prepared, sure, if you'd like. Come up with what you want your spell list to be right now. You've been travelling off and on for days since your last combat (save for the big centipede things). You have had one long rest since then so portent away. In any event, you get no particular twinges of good or bad from the items, they are pretty neutral in nature.
It'll take some time studying the items for an hour or so to figure out what exactly they do.

After about fifteen minutes of trudging, you break out of the forest-line and find yourselves face to face with a wall of rock. A small crevice lies about 30 feet to the right. Two of Cemos' strikes, the second and fourth, slam into the weird snake creature, causing it to recoil in pain. As it does so, a lance of lightning arcs out from Dustin and flickers over the grick's scales. It hisses at you as the smell of singed flesh wafts to your nose. Bildaweer's missiles blast into the thing's beak, causing it to partially break away. Just as it finishes shaking its 'head', a great bear leaps through the darkness, claws flashing in the low light. Apr 28, 2017 1:07 pm
OOC:
You did hear her, it was faint, almost like she was talking to herself. But you did hear her.
Dustin, as you look about the cave, you notice some drag marks and as you get deeper in, you find a pile of bones or all sorts near the back. Near that pile, there are a pair of bodies, only one of which you recognize: Francis. He managed to get here quickly, perhaps driven by his fear and madness, and was assaulted by the grick. It was only your intervention that caused the grick to come out of the cave at all. Normally it would have just settled for dining on your former compatriot.
Apr 28, 2017 1:10 pm
OOC:
Is Francis dead or merely poisoned or something ?
Dustin will bring the bodies up and out with him.
Found Francis Dustin says sadly.

He then goes back for the other body bringing it up. If there is nothing else below to bring up he will exit the crevice himself.

He glances to Cemons and whispers, Why is she speaking to herself ? then more normal volume, Thanks for holding the rope steady for me.
Apr 28, 2017 1:17 pm
OOC:
Sorry, it's not as much a crevice down into the ground, but a cave back into the wall. You can just walk straight in and out.
As you lift Francis' body, you notice that there is very little left of his neck. It would take significant magical and material efforts to raise him at this point.
Apr 28, 2017 1:28 pm
He must have headed straight here. Right into this slug. Dustin shakes his head, he then focuses on salvaging what equipment he can from the bodies.

I guess we will drag this thing back to the sovereign, wonder what he will do with it.

ah Francis you poor bastard, why did you run off like that. There is something going on in this place, something that is clouding our minds and making us do things against our will.... and I intend to have it out!
Cemos circles around to Dustin and leans in as he whispers. go around back of Eldrith and cut off any escape. as he turns around he looks at the group and pauses for a moment... look we can't move on until we fully understand what is going on here and why for some unexplained reason we all tend to loose our minds. as he says this he walks up to eldrith and looks her dead in the eye as he grabs her by the shoulders and casts zone of truth. what or who are you talking to lass? Is there someone in your mind? Why did you scream out in the Drow prison about buzzing? What buzzing? Are you hiding something from us? Tell me now!

Dustin then realizes something, Cemos, Eldreth has been through a lot, she was swallowed by that blasted walking plant. Maybe she is poisoned, curing her might be much better then any magics to gain some kind of mental edge. Hell we have all been through a lot and your right all of our minds have suffered. We just don't want anyone else ending up like Francis here. He ran off and this is the sad result.
Apr 29, 2017 8:09 pm
Ander's brow is furrowed as this goes down. He remembers the effects whatever madness inhabits this place had on Stool and Cemos at the beach, and it seems that Francis has now suffered from it as well. He turns to the land around him, looking for signs of anything that could give clues to what is infesting this grove.

Yes, I imagine we should get it back shortly. This place, something about the surroundings is messing with my head as well. It will be good to be out of here.

May 4, 2017 3:05 pm
Your group straggles after Stool as he leads you towards Basidia, guided by a force you don't know. Eldreth helps, but stays near the back. After a reasonable walk, you see beyond the mud and mushrooms spread across the cavern a large, clear pool sitting in the midst of the fungal grove. A central mound seems to be the only dry spot in sight, though a small cliff rises above the cavern floor far across the clearing, with giant mushrooms visible in the distance. Bioluminescent fungi trace strange constellations along the cavern's ceiling and walls, showing the darkness of the ravine and a mist-shrouded smaller cavern beyond.

As you move towards the mound, there are two massive myconids there, likely the two sovereigns. Near them are three others the same size as Stool. Finally, ten zurkhwoods tower and move slowly, creating a shifting pattern that prevents a lot of direct observation. As you move through the zurkhwoods, the taller of the massive myconids looks to you, with several mushroom caps swaying above him. A dusting of spores spreads out, covering all of you.

You are safe, friendly softers. You arrive at a wondrous time, for Neverlight Grove is on the verge of something great, something marvelous! Celebrate as the day of joy is nigh! he thinks at you.

Ahh, Sovereign Phylo, thank you for the welcome! Stool replies, though you all sense something off about his mental tone. Meanwhile, the other massive myconid moves somewhat strangely as well as Phylo speaks.
May 4, 2017 3:12 pm
We found the creatures you mentioned. One was too heavy to move but we found this one.

Dustin looks to Stool wishing he could think at his friend without telegraphing to everyone.

What is it you are celebrating ?
May 5, 2017 3:16 am

aye that's a good question. and what are you planning on doing with this beast?
May 10, 2017 1:11 am
OOC:
Sorry all!
Please! Stay as long as you wish here! We celebrate the gifts of the Great Seeder that lives beyond the Garden of Welcome! Please stay with us for this celebration, although I would ask that you avoid the eastern plateau from here on because the Circle of Masters is preparing a wondrous and glorious surprise in the Garden of Welcome there. You may have an advanced peek after our next melding, if you would like!

If you would like softers, I could give you a small tour of the place, as a thank you for your gift. As for what we plan on doing, this creature will be returned to the ground so as to nourish the colony. In doing so it will restore what it has taken. As for the shambler, I will ask our Hunters to deal with its remains. It too will be returned to the ground to nourish us. the low rumble of the other myconid sovereign in your mind is clear and obvious.
May 10, 2017 12:55 pm

May 11, 2017 8:47 pm
Yes, of course friend of Stool. When we are touring, we may speak as much as we need. It is my pleasure to show you the colony. In fact, let us set out now. I understand that you've already spoken to our Master of Hunters. There are some others I'd like you to meet.

With that, the large mushroom you now know to be Sovereign Basidia walks away, ushering you on toward one side of the cavern.
May 11, 2017 11:33 pm
Great perhaps you could tell us more about things, you seem to have some concerns.
May 12, 2017 3:20 pm
As you all follow Basidia, he waits until you are all well away from Phylo before speaking again.

Softers, you should be very careful. Do not remain in the grove for too long. Another group of softers arrived only a few cycles ago and accepted Phylo's offer to see the Garden of Welcome. I've not seen them since, nor has Phylo mentioned them again. The Circle of Masters, a new creation of Phylo's, takes nearly all of the carcasses the Circle of Hunters bring in. They are sending myconids outside the grove without telling anyone. I am truly concerned about the actions taken by my fellow Sovereign. Phylo means well but something is wrong. I fear that Phylo has contracted some kind of diseased spore and I think it comes from the Garden of Welcome. I would ask that you investigate for me, as you are able to move about more freely than I. I fear if I were to enter the Garden, I would also fall victim to Phylo's disease.

As for the other Circle leaders, you've met Loobamub from the Hunters. There is also Gasbide over the Circle of Builders. Gasbide supports Phylo in all the Sovereign does. On the top terrace is Hebopbe and the Circle of Growers. Hebopbe is no supporter of Phylo's ideas, but believes my complaints are just the whining of a myconid spurned. To the south is our Circle of Spores, where new myconids form. It is led by Yrberop, who supports Phylo as Phylo's plans require new sprouts. It places the Spores in high need. Our smallest circle is here, the Circle of Explorers. It is led by Rasharoo, one of my closest supporters. Rasharoo's frequent trips out of the grove to patrol for us has made seem to give Rasharoo a different outlook. I'd like you to speak with Rasharoo. You've made a good ally in Loobamub. I've heard through the spores that you agreed to help and your presentation of the Grick is proof of that. I believe you are friends, as Stool is safe in your care. Please, take this case as a sign of good faith. If you investigate the Garden, I can give you many other treasures in return.

Ahh, Rasharoo, these softer friends of Stool have come to tour with me. Speak with them? They may view the Garden for me.
Basidia 'says' as you come to another myconid, this one somewhat smaller, and more slender, than Stool.

Ah yes, Basidia. It is my pleasure Sovereign. Welcome softers. I am one of Basidia's oldest followers. I was a nomad with the Sovereign when we arrived in the Grove many cycles ago. I will be the first to follow if we are to become nomads again. How may I help you?
May 12, 2017 3:39 pm

Hello Rasharoo, I second my friends questions.

Let's go on this tour then and see what we can discover.

The Garden of Welcome. Pah. Phylo is gathering something there for a surprise from this Great Seeder. Phylo the Fetid, is more appropriate. Gasbide and Yrberop are nothing but puppets, dancing for the Phylo. Hebopbe is better, not blindly following. Hebopbe doesn't like the ideas Phylo has, but doesn't quite hate them as Basidia does.

My patrols have kept me mainly sane. I can see how things change in the time I am gone. Something doesn't "taste" right with the communication spores that Phylo is using. I can't quite place it, but I've given up on trusting any but Basidia in this place. If you would investigate the Garden, be very careful. I can assist you there if needed. I want to see this plague against us ended.
Rasharoo says.

Distrust is the right of it. Trust no one, except the one true one. Isn't that right, friend? Eldreth says to no one in particular.

@Bildaweer - You feel like he's being truthful with you.
May 15, 2017 2:07 pm
Well, we will look into things for you, perhaps our status as outsiders will give us a better chance.

Can I make a nature or arcana check on the spores not tasting right?

You can, but make it at disadvantage. You have SOME experience with Myconids, but it'd be pretty close to a wild ass guess.
May 15, 2017 4:47 pm

I don't believe I used my portent rolls. I am unsure how that would work with disadvantage. Rules say I can replace one of the rolls w/ portent roll. Also, which check should I use, nature or arcana?
May 15, 2017 5:05 pm
OOC:
That would make sense to me. You can use whichever you'd prefer. Any information you may discover would be equally rooted in both.

Bildaweer leans in and whispers to Dustin The myconids are being corrupted magically. Their communication spores are being affected and the longer the corruption, the more complete the infection. I fear that our communication with the corrupted spores may rub off on Stool and ourselves. I could try to cast dispel magic, but do not believe it will be powerful enough to overcome this. We'll need to find a solution and soon. Tell Stool and I'll tell Cemos and Anders.
May 16, 2017 4:25 pm
Dustin nods and fills Stool in since he was worried about him.
May 16, 2017 6:00 pm
Bildaweer quietly discloses the information to both Cemos and Anders.
May 16, 2017 7:26 pm
Anders nods his head as you pass the information along. By this time, Basidia has been leading you all to the Garden of Welcome, with Rasharoo in tow.

You make your way higher in the chamber, up to one of the tallest terraces in the area. This plateau rises higher than the others, screened by a natural fence of soaring zurkhwood stalks. Muffled murmuring can be heard from atop the plateau.

Beyond this fence lies the Garden of Wonder. I know not what Phylo plans in its confines. It is the location of our newest circle, the Circle of Masters. They are Phylo's personal supporters. Please softers. Please cleanse this place of whatever horrors Phylo has created beyond. If you retreat from here, there is a little used cave about 45 feet back from here. You can rest there if you need, or you can press on now. Please hurry! Basidia says, leaving you, a level of fear evident in his tone.

As you all rest, the murmuring from above can still be heard, however it would seem no one is aware of your presence in this cave. After you all rest, feeling restored and full of energy, you set back out up the path, led by Rasharoo. You find yourselves once more by the fenceline of zurkhwoods and the murmuring continues, slightly louder now.
May 17, 2017 3:34 pm
Dustin will follow keeping alert along with Webster.
May 17, 2017 5:18 pm
what is that,
Rasharoo, do you have any idea what is making that noise?
May 17, 2017 6:24 pm
The myconid shakes his head slowly.

I don't know. We typically communicate only with our rapport spores. We don't have a means of vocalizing the way you softers do.
May 17, 2017 7:15 pm
Then there might be other softers there.
May 18, 2017 1:35 am
aye or somtin else. cemos tightens his grip on his hammer.
May 18, 2017 2:44 pm
Anders nods and heads forward quietly, his scimitar naked in his hand. As you all move forward through the zurkhwoods, the low muttering grows louder, turning into a symphony of moans, cries, and hisses. The only light comes from a few glowing mushrooms along the edge, but even in the gloom, you can't miss the source of the sounds. The heads of creatures of a dozen humaonid Underdark races peek from the ground, mold and fungi growing around them.

One voice calls out loudly in Undercommon, a female drow fighting to speak.
[ +- ] Undercommon
She manages to stir within her living grave, raising a spider medallion half-embedded in the bloated growth that was once her hand. Half her face is rotten and pustulate, a bed for the sprouting of scores of tiny mushrooms.

No one took anything specifically, but you know that the gauntlets, the necklace, and one of the pearls were magical. I'll assume you guys spent a little time during your rest figuring out what they were.
Gauntlets of Ogre Power - makes your strength 19, no effect if your strength is over 19. Requires attunement.
Periapt of Wound Closure - if you drop to 0 hit points at the start of your next turn you auto-stabilize. Also, when you regain HP through spending hit dice, you regain 2x the number of hit points. Requires attunement.
Pearl of Power - if you have the pearl on your person, you can speak its command word and regain one expended spell slot. If you are trying to regain a slot of 4th or higher, you instead gain another 3rd level slot. Once used, you cannot use it again until the next dawn. Requires attunement by a spellcaster.

You can choose to divvy up how you'd like.

She thought.... they may seek refuge....here. The big one.... Phylo..... tricked me..... warn the drow about......Zuggtm......

Even as she transmits her thoughts to you, the little movement she exerted to raise the amulet takes her and you see the last bit of light in her eyes fade away.

The moans of the garden's victims suddenly take on a new tone of fear as something moves across the foul ground. A disgusting larval creature rises up before you, showing only vestigial fungal growths that hint that it might once have been a myconid.

Welcome, travelers. the aberrant myconid's voice gurgles and spits as it speaks both aloud and in your minds at once. Are you hear for the wedding rehearsal? Friends of the bride or her intended? No matter! Let the love of the Great Seeder embrace you as you become one with her chosen, the Great Body!

The creature in front of you is odd, looking like a giant larvae. It has clouds of spores that puff out of a slit that functions like a mouth. It makes actual noise, which you notice as being very strange as the myconid don't speak. As he speaks and writhes on the ground, two of the corpses lying on the ground rise to their feet, shaking, their eyes dull and lifeless as they shamble forward towards you. Out of the zurkhwoods behind you, two myconids the size of Stool advance towards you, their stalks quivering with anticipation.

The space you are now in is a circle about 60 feet across, with piles of fetid corpses and fungus-infected bodies lying all over the place. You are 20 feet from the big ugly, and 20 feet from the myconids coming up behind you. The zurkhwood "fence" completely encloses the area, and you are 20 feet from that as well

Dustin stabs into the creature as Cemos swings his hammer. Right after Dustin's hit lands, you see a corpse explode near him from the ground, covering him with spores. It looks like it stitches some of his wounds closed. One of the blows lands, but the second misses. As their strikes land, four missiles streak through the air, causing puffs of spores to rise off the weird creature. Stool, Georges, Eldreth, and Ander all take their swings at the large creature, arraying themselves around the creature.

Georges, Stool, and Ander all land some attacks on the larval creature. The large myconids cover the distance to Bildaweer and each take a swing.

The two mushroom zombies head towards Dustin, each ending up on either side of him.

The creature laughs, a grumbly laugh, as spores explode out from himself, covering everyone within 10 feet of him. Everyone within 10' of the creature, make a DC12 Constitution saving throw.

May 23, 2017 1:58 pm
Dustin, as you inspect Stool and the others that had been caught in the spore blast, you recognize something strange on Stool. Where the spores landed, little black tendrils are creeping out slowly but noticeably. Likely he is infected with something! In a short motion, he scratches absentmindedly at his hip.

Georges begins helping you search the grounds only to spy a broken mushroom stalk which brings him to a total stop. His face turns up and he stares at a point far beyond any of you, not talking or moving. Just - staring.

A cursory inspection of the area, however, does reveal a stash of loot near to where the drow woman was interred. A suit of studded leather armor that looks exceptionally well constructed, as well as an exquisite shortsword. A decent sized bag accompanies it. Inside the bag, you find a pair of scrolls, 40 days worth of rations, and 320 silver pieces. The bag didn't appear to be large enough to hold all of it at a glance.

The two zombie mushroom things are wearing chain shirts and have poor looking shortswords.

Rasharoo enters the Garden carefully, looking at all of you.

Poor Yestabrod. This Great Seeder of theirs twisted Yestabrod's form horribly. I wish I knew..... his mental voice fades away as you hear noises coming from a cavern to the northeast of your current position.
OOC:
Bildaweer and Cemos, if you look at the scrolls, you can tell that they are a scroll of remove curse and spider climb.

The armor and shortsword are +2 studded leather and a +2 shortsword. You've enough experience down here now to recognize the items as drowcraft pieces. From your time with Sarith you know they won't last long in direct sunlight.
May 23, 2017 2:31 pm
OOC:
Dustin would like to claim the armor and short sword.
Yestabrod wait don't get close those spores are causing an infection. Stool don't worry you will be fine. Cemos need you over here buddy. Stool needs a cure.

May 24, 2017 10:36 pm
I wasn't sure if it would work but at least now we have a way to fight this infection.

stool how do you feel? any lasting effects?
Cemos begins to check the sprout over just to make sure he didn't miss anything
May 26, 2017 3:33 pm
I feel fine, now. I was extremely itchy before, almost like I was growing something. It's gone now, thank you Cemos. Stool thinks at you. Given your knowledge of your magic, you do think that the scroll of remove curse could equally work for someone under the effects of this madness, but only so long as they aren't too far gone to the effect.

Dustin, as you spend some time with the bag, you recall that bags of holding function as this sack does.

What is that sound Dustinfriend? The chanting? Do you hear it?
May 26, 2017 3:41 pm
I hear it Stool but I really don't know what it means. I think we need to find this great Seeder and stop them.

Dustin hands the bag to Bildaweer, I think you might have a use for this as a wizard you need to hold a lot of items for all your spells. This seems to be one of those magic bags of holding.
May 26, 2017 3:44 pm
Thank you Dustin! It looks like we have a spell of remove curse. This will come in handy dealing with the corrupted myconids.

I first learned of her during my religious studies while undergoing Paladin training. I remember the texts saying that she is utterly inhuman and is even as bad as the demogrogen . It is said that she infects living turning them into rot infested fungus and if she is free from the abyss the mortal world surely suffer. I suggest we tread carefully here, there is no tellin what horrors lie ahead of us.

Jun 1, 2017 3:26 pm
Sure. The training you would have received for fighting her was a single word: Don't.

From what you remember of the Demon Princes and their ilk, they vary in strength between that of an Ancient Red Dragon and way beyond an Ancient Red Dragon. There was an acolyte that scoffed that his god's light would protect him. The ensuing lecture lasted over a week. In short, it summarized to: only the strongest heroes, those that can shift across planes without thought and summon the mightest of magics actually stand a chance against the foe. However, as paladins, you can fight their agents. Healing those that are able to be healed, and giving the mercy of a quick death to those that are too far gone.
Jun 1, 2017 4:27 pm
lads I am afraid we would not stand a chance against her. he pauses for a moment. I .... We lack the power to face her, the best we could hope for is to save those that we can and leave this place. I don't know, Cemosfriend. I fear many of them are too far poisoned by this Great Seeder to be sane. We can't let them finish whatever they start here, though. We can't. It will spill out everywhere if we don't stem the tide.

I was, yes. He has many good ideas for a softer. Fire would be the wrong choice, he is right. I am disturbed still by this chanting. I must know. Rasharoo sends as he makes his way towards the cave now.

Jun 6, 2017 4:55 am
As you all make your way following Rasharoo to the as-of-yet unexplored cavern on this plateau, echoes spill from the misty cavern beyond, a cacophony of wheezing voices that wrap together like some kind of discordant music. The remaining heads planted in the Garden of Welcome behind you begin to croak and groan, joining the horrible song.

Through the mist that shrouds the smaller cavern, you see the parade of creatures responsible for the melody. Their bodies are only vaguely humanoid, with clusters of luminescent lichen and tumescent growths forming chaotic patterns on their decaying flesh, their voices stabbing into your minds, both insane and gleeful in equal parts.

From rocky bed the toadstool rose,
From chaos dark, her love She shows.
Wish! Yearn! Laugh!
The Lady will be wed!
Crave! Hunger! Dance!
Her joyous spores will spread!
Youth is gone, beauty rots,
Araumycos and Zuggtmoy!
Joined together, heart to heart,
Becoming one 'til death do part!
Hail! Hail! Hail!

Cemos is bathed in a glowing light, his beard taking on new life. Dustin moves forward, sneaking into position, however, just as he raises the crossbow to let out a shot, a vision floods all of your minds.

The tableau of the mock wedding is replaced by a vision of the inside of a great tower. Spiraling stairs and balconies are carved into its walls, with the interior lit by phosphorescent patches of mold growing in whorls. In the center of the open space floats a humanoid figure, womanlike in form, but made entirely of fungi and mold. She is easily three times the height of the fungal bridesmaids that move up and down the spiraling stairs, tending to their giant mistress. They croon a strange, soothing song as they weave the substance of the giant figure into delicate lichen veils and a long, mycellium train like a bridal gown.

As the vision fades from your eyes, you see the mock ceremony, complete with the puppet Yestabrod acting as minister, has drawn to an end. They begin filing deeper into the cave, lead by the three servants carrying Yestabrod's corpse. From where the cave sits, it is likely that a path will emerge in the room with the massive mushroom you saw in the distance earlier.

Everybody please make a Wisdom saving throw.

Afterwards, Dustin, let me know if you'd still like to shoot one of the departing creatures.

The vision slips from your minds and you all are left shaking your heads slightly. You've now seen what you know to be Zuggtmoy being prepared for a grand wedding. The celebrants are marching behind the body of Yestabrod, which is being used as a puppet by three of the zombie creatures.

What do you do?
Jun 14, 2017 1:24 pm
Dustin looks to the others, "You all saw that too ? I dont think attacking this group will hurt that creature we saw in anyway.
Jun 14, 2017 2:44 pm
No, but maybe an attack can be our objection to this wedding. Perhaps that is all we have to do - disrupt their plans so that the wedding doesn't take place.

Dustin, I am not entirely sure that would stop it. Roosharoo what say you ?

As you all follow Rasharoo back to Basidia, Cemos spends much of his time bending over and picking up loose mushrooms, rocks, and other cave detritus.

Ah, welcome back softers. Tell me, what did you discover in the Garden? Basidia asks.

Before you can get a chance, you see Rasharoo shudder and give off rapport spores. In a matter of moments, you see Basidia's face pale, a strange sight for a mushroom.

We cannot wait any longer softers. This wedding you've seen. This is an abomination. I will gather the loyal circles to me, hunters and explorers, and we will leave the Grove. Please, please come with us. I fear if you venture into Yggmorgus, the giant tower in your vision, you will not defeat the Demon Queen. Once out of the Grove, we will go our separate ways, but you should move to find a large city of some sort. The people need to be warned. Perhaps Gracklstugh or Blingdenstone. Either one will give you access to the surface world. Alert the Underdark citizens there and make haste for your surface lords. They need to know that the Demons walk free in the Underdark!
Jun 19, 2017 2:31 pm

Jun 20, 2017 3:20 am
at this point any place has to be better then here. tell me bildaweer will there be a place I may acquire some new gear, particularly some new armor? cemos says as he points to the old acid burned hole in his armor.
Jun 20, 2017 2:33 pm
Cemos, your armor will be quite fashionable in Blingdenstone and the ladies will be quite impressed. Assuming the demons haven't reached the city, we'll find a replacement or an armorer to make suitable repairs.
Jun 20, 2017 3:46 pm
Blingdenstone will be a good location. They can spread the word from there and you can return to the surface, softers. Stool is welcome to come with us, or stay with you. I would advise he not go out of the Underdark. Life in the sun can be rough for us on the surface world. Basidia warns you.

I will continue on with my friends, Sovereign. At least to Blingdenstone. Then I will seek you out from there. Stool says.

Very well. Rasharoo will lead you to Blingdenstone and will accompany Stool back. He knows the way very well and may make travel quicker for you. Even still, it will be a trip a little longer than a ten-day.

I feel my time with you all is coming to a close. You've been great companions, but there is a call here I cannot ignore. I'll accompany you all part way to Blingdenstone, but then I must depart to tend to the health of the land. Ander says softly, a slight tremble in his voice.
OOC:
Mechanically, it's a 16 day trip from Neverlight to Blingdenstone. With Rasharoo accompanying you, it'll cut it to 12. We can do this one of two ways and I have no particular ties to either one. You set out of Neverlight Grove in the company of two full circles of myconids, however, you only travel a short way in their company.

Softers, you've done much for our circles, and I don't know that we can properly thank you. However, we do have some manner of treasure we'd like to leave you with so that you can go on to do better things. This box contains treasures we've found on the bodies of dead travelers over the years. May they fund you in some way. Additionally, I took the liberty of crafting a special potion for you, for your bravery. These gourds contain a liquid that will restore a fair amount of life to an injured party. Take the rewards, please. Basidia offers you all a fine wooden chest containing three amethysts, four small diamonds, and one large sparkly diamond. In addition, you are each given two small mushrooms that seem to be hardened and slosh when you shake them. They contain potions of greater healing.

As you part from the myconids, with only Rasharoo and Stool in your company now, you continue on. For three days you travel, and make camp. Setting a watch is easy and you all have plenty of chance to recuperate and rest. However, in the middle of the third night, as Dustin stands his watch, a strange light appears in the distance. In a matter of minutes, Dustin, you notice that it is a small herd of beetles about 2 feet tall. They give off a bright glow, almost as if they were torches embodied. They are about 100 feet from you when you spot them.
Jun 21, 2017 4:04 pm
Dustin wakes the others not knowing if these beetles are dangerous.

Bildaweer's magic streaks out, blasting two of the bugs to smithereens. The other two bolts clip two more, causing them to stumble as they skitter.

Dustin's shock bolts sail out, shooting right over their heads.

Cemos finds a particularly interesting rock that reminds him of a lost love's face.

Georges and Stool leap to their feet, charging toward the bugs, closing the gap but not getting close enough to attack anything.

Eldreth rolls over and grumbles about losing sleep and ignores the lot of you.

Rasharoo looks between the fight and Eldreth and places himself between the bugs' path and her, preparing himself for a fight.

The bugs charge at Georges, Stool, and Cemos. 4 each attack Georges and Stool, 2 attack Cemos.

Of all the attacks, only one hits: Cemos is bit, however, because of his training, he doesn't actually take any damage.

Dramasailor sent a note to Bad_forest_monkey
You return to sleep and proceed through the night without interruption. When you are all awake and refreshed, you set out again, slogging through the myriad caves and caverns. Tiny winding paths and sweeping cathedral type spaces that make you forget you are underground.

You spend the next week moving quietly, chatting here and there. Eldreth sinks more into a funk with each passing day. You hear her muttering to someone that clearly isn't there at night. Whispers about not trusting the rest of you and that this invisible presence is the only thing she can trust in. You see creatures off in the distance but they don't attack and move far wide of you. It's not common for a group this large to be tramping around. One of the days, about 5 days in to this portion, you end up getting lost and wander even more. Somehow at during your time of being lost, Ander disappears from your number. This adds more delay to your trip. Once you find the path again, you're all stressed and agitated. You spend another 5 days wandering until you come into a cavern, massive cavern, one of the largest you've seen since you left Velkynvelve.

This cavern is odd. Very odd. In fact, short of the demon lords you've seen so far, this is up there in the top 3 or 4. It's almost as if you are outside. There is so much luminescent moss clinging to the ceiling of this place that it's almost as bright as if you were on a meadow during a spring afternoon. Enough light, that grass actually grows along the ground here! There are rolling hills and a single crumbling keep off in the distance. Rasharoo sets off towards this keep. It must be an important marker for Blingdenstone, the way he's moving towards it. As you follow him, faster than you've moved yet, you come across a gorge running through the middle of the space. There is a massive stone bridge spanning the raging river beneath. Black water moving back the way you came.

Carefully, you cross the bridge, wary for attack from all sides. The stonework on this bridge is immaculate, precise and pure in a way not even the dwarves have achieved. Whoever built this is a true master of the stone. As you make your way up to the crumbling keep, you see that even though it appears disheveled, it's actually very well constructed. All of the crumbling is artistic in nature and doesn't detract from the structure. The door is massive, easily 25' tall, and made of zurkhwood bound with battered iron bands. It stands open, swung out towards you.

We must pass into this keep. It holds the door to this entrance to Blingdenstone. Be careful, I know not if the master of this place is still here or.....

Rasharoo's mental comment is cut off as he passes through the doors of the keep. From far overhead, a massive stone and wood club swings once, then twice, in rapid succession, flattening Rasharoo into mushroom paste. A terrifying roar emanates from the structure.

A low guttural sound follows it, as if boulders themselves were rolling down a hill, but structured like words.

You all fall backwards as a towering bulk of blue-gray giant strolls through the door, stumbling slightly, dragging the greatclub behind him. His eyes move across you and his eyes blaze in a fury. The smell of alcohol is exceedingly strong here.

As a note, there's really not a "non-lethal" attack any more. The only real thing like that is if you strike a melee blow that would reduce the creature to 0 you can do it as a "non-lethal" blow that drops it to 0 but stable, so no death saving throws.
Georges, Stool, and Eldreth all leap into action, swinging at the giant creature. The creature is easily three times Dustin's height.

Dustin's strike lands true, piercing into the giant's stone-like flesh. Bildaweer's missiles pummel the giant's chest as Cemos steps up swinging. The first attempt goes wide, but the second slices into the back of the creature's legs. Of the other three, only Georges manages to connect, and only with one stroke. The giant howls and swings at Cemos, his attention gained by the glowing golden beard settling on the dwarf.

The first swing Cemos manages to duck out of the way, however as he straightens back up, the giant's club catches him upside the head, rattling him. Take 16 damage Cemos (19 - 3 from your armor feat) and please make a DC10 CON save or you lose concentration on the shield of faith.

As Bildaweer pummels the giant with magic, Dustin attempts to stab once again, but misses. Cemos misses with his first swing and then makes a crucial correction and lands a critical hit on the creature's ankle. Georges, still a bit stunned at the giant's size misses, as does Eldreth. Stool misses with the dagger, but having learned much about wielding two blades, slashes his sword across the giant's Achilles tendon, cutting deeply.

The creature howls, and turns to swing at Stool, enraged by the slicing wound dealt to him by a mushroom.

In horror, you all watch as both slams of the club land on your long-time companion, crushing him beyond the point of saving.

You are all up

Dustin's still form lies on the ground, bleeding from every possible place. Cemos dives after him, filling him with a golden light. You see wounds stitch closed as a suffusion of light pours out of his eyes in the brief moment before a single golden hair descends from the heavens onto the rogue, causing a beard of glowing power to shimmer on the normally hairless chin. As the beard settles onto Dustin, you see the light fade from Cemos, the shield transferred.

Bildaweer slings another series of missiles out into the giant's face, causing bluish blood to pour from his eyes.

Georges, Stool, and Eldreth all leap back for the giant, sure they can finish him off. They each take their swings. Stool, in his fury at having watched his own mentor fall under the brunt of the clubstrike meant for him, misses the beast. However, Georges and Eldreth join together in a devastating dual attack. The scimitar rakes across the inside of the giant's leg, opening an artery. The giant falls to the ground, his eyes flickering. Eldreth walks up to him, looking in his eyes for the briefest moment. He mutters something in that same gravelly voice as she raises her hammer and brings it swinging around in a swift two-handed arc, faster than anyone could get there to stop her. The strike hits the giant's nose, forcing the splinters of bone up into his brain, and the last vestiges of his life flicker and fade, as his chest stops heaving.

Combat is over.

The only real thing of interest on this giant, at all, is a strange jug that seems to radiate some magical power. It's tied to his belt in a leather pouch. The item is about the size of a gallon jug and sloshes when you move it, even though peering inside reveals no liquid.

Welcome on board ae-dd
Jul 6, 2017 3:37 pm
OOC:
We did, say hi to ae_dd! You'll be meeting her shortly! More accurately, as part of this post! I'm going to railroad you all a little bit, apologies in advance!
You all spend about an hour, recovering and recuperating near the corpse of the fallen giant. Aside from his massive greatclub, which you can't even manage to lift, the only real item of note he has is the jug that Cemos has taken. As you rest, you feel your wounds knitting closed and a power surge through your veins. By the time the hour is up, your wounds are completely healed, not even a remnant of pain remaining, even for you Dustin.

Stool takes some time to break Rasharoo up into little pieces and turns him under the soil turned up by your scuffle with the giant. You all rise and walk into the crumbling keep. Very carefully you proceed, wary of potential lurking dangers, especially now that your guide is gone back to the soil. When you make it into the keep, you notice a small ring of stones in the wall, with words in Undercommon circling them, as if molten brass had been poured into the carvings. As you get near to the ring, the words glow and the center of the rock shimmers away. In a few moments, a tunnel appears and you hear the bustle of an active mine beyond.

Oy look! Heartboiler, right? We did a lot of work for your tribe back in the day, for sure. You lot are strong as the demons of hell, and even that massive chopper you carry is a deterrant, but damn it all I can't have just one person running caravan guard back to Blingdenstone! Get it through yer head, yeah! Either turn up with a proper group o' guards, or sit yer ass down and wait for one. I won't have my ore and gems getting ransacked because I didn't mount a good enough guard, you hear me?

You hear, in Common, rattling through the tunnel. With a strange look to one another, you proceed on down the tunnel, and in about 25 feet, it turns to the side and you find yourselves in a mining camp. A series of hefty zurkhwood carts sit laden with chunks of raw ore and mounds of uncut gems. A massive woman stands, a drinking horn that looks to be the entire horn of an elder ram hanging from her belt and a gigantic greatsword strapped across her back. The pommel is easily above her head and the tip comes to her ankles. You can see some crude runes carved into the blade.

Heartboilers nostrils flare as she takes a sharp breath. She squares her shoulders and her hands turn into fists as the muscles of her arms tense, making her body look even more like it was carved from stone. Her body is covered in tattoos, some depicting monsters and warriors from the past. Her hair looks like it's not been combed in over a decade, held into strings by metal rings.
You do not trust me, why is that Mr. Pickshine? Has my tribe ever disappointed you? Do not insult me, little man! Her voice rumbles pretty deep, cold as ice, as she takes a step towards the one she addressed as Mr. Pickshine

Dustin moves, like a veritable shadow across the rock. Not a whisper of noise, not an inking that he's there. He pokes his head around the corner of a ramshackle building just as Heartboiler addresses the squat little deep gnome wearing a leather and steel helmet with a massive purple plume in it.

Just as he does, however, a cacophony, similar to a herd of cats being dumped into water filled with empty metal buckets, rises from behind the rogue as Cemos blunders his way beyond and into the camp.

Now look here Heartie! I'm not disresp - what in the Hells is this now! Clatterin' around like a damnfool sneaking into my mining town! Look alive you lot, I am Dasco Pickshine, overseer of the Pickshine Mines. What can we do for you? he sneers.

Hello ae! Please stick around as this has been the best game I've played on the site so far!
Bildaweer rolls his eyes and comes up from behind Dustin and Cemos. He pats Cemos on the shoulder and says to his fellow svirfneblin: Hello there! We're on our way to Blingdenstone. So sorry to break up your little argument. What seems to be the problem?
Jul 7, 2017 10:34 pm
OOC:
Thank you all for the warm welcome^^! I've enjoyed reading the story so far and am very excited to join!
The noise coming from behind her makes Heartboiler's hand go up to her sword as she whirls around. She lets her hand fall back as she sees the men standing there, an annoyed look on her face.
If Mr. Pickshine wouldn't be so stubborn there would be no problem at all! But he is, and that means I can't do my job for there's no one to help me bring this caravan safely to Blingdenstone.
Jul 8, 2017 12:06 am
OOC:
have I been found out ?
Jul 8, 2017 12:10 am
OOC:
Oh yeah. Cemos's clattering drew their eyes right to you.
You lot are headed for Blingdenstone too? Well now, isn't this fortuitous! Seems you may have ended the argument after all. It's a good thing we don't need quiet guards, just fearsome ones. Dasco says, a deep belly laugh rolling out. As it were, the three guards I'd had arranged to escort this load fell down with some kind of gibbering sickness a few hours ago. I seem to be in need of guards to escort this load. You in?
Jul 8, 2017 2:57 am
As Cemos gathers his faculties he stands up straight and says, fearsome you say? Cemos puffs his chest out a bit. we are that and more but before we go anywhere with you I think we would like to know exactly who you are and what it is you want from us. there was a very large, very drunk giant back there that killed a friend of ours and if you have any idea what he was doing id like to know.
Jul 8, 2017 12:35 pm
Hello Mr. Pickshine, what do you mean ended the argument ?
Jul 9, 2017 1:41 pm
OOC:
don't know what happend there but the server was freaking out on me.
Jul 9, 2017 3:21 pm
I told you who I am ye daft dwarf! Dasco Pickshine, overseer of the Pickshine Mines. Which you happen to be standing in. You say Folgrim attacked you lot? The damned oaf. He wasn't too bad, until his place in the Ordning fell. Apparently his stoneshaping got shoddy. He was a good guard, but shouldn't have interfered. You lot aren't coming in force to overthrow the city. Would have been better to just sit and ignore you and let you in. Hells damnit. Ugh. Anyway. Ending the argument, isn't it obvious? You lot want to go to Blingdenstone. Heartie here wants to go to Blingdenstone. She couldn't go by herself with this size load, but with you lot, you'll have plenty of hands to transport the goods into town. It's a safe route in, and you'll make some gold out of the venture. Dasco says, exasperation settling in on his face.

How abouts you take this load into Blingdenstone, deliver it to the depot in full, and you'll be paid fifty gold a head.
Jul 9, 2017 3:37 pm
"I have no problem with that. How about the rest of you ?"
Jul 9, 2017 9:11 pm
Heartboiler looks at the group, a deep irritated frown appearing on her face
Hmm, six little helpers, I feel so much safer. Very well then, my name is Uthal Heartboiler Kalagiano and I wish to leave as soon as possible. She turns away from the group and walks to the carts.
Jul 10, 2017 12:25 pm
Dustin introduces himself and the others.

Well, I have no problem setting out now.
Jul 10, 2017 12:47 pm
I suppose if we are all headed in the same way that it would be better to travel as a group. Let's be off then!
Jul 10, 2017 3:05 pm
Dasco smiles and flips a few levers on the lead cart. Inserting a large key, he twists it and a chugging motor starts up.

All you need to do is push this lever here forward until it's fast enough for you. Mind you, it doesn't think, so if you need to stop, you need to pull the lever back to the middle and push the big rectangle to slow it down. The engine'll run just fine, so long as you don't dawdle on your trip. I don't expect issues, and transporting my wares ought to make your arrival at the gate easier. Once you are there, just ride the lift up with the wagons, follow the road you're on there, and you'll meet one of my associates at the other end. Best of luck! he says, indicating the operating mechanisms for the train of carts.

You all make your way down the path Dasco indicated for you, and you make your way for a few hours. For most of you, it's a comfortable trip, however, Heartboiler and Dustin, the passageway is meant for smaller persons, and you find that you have to walk hunched over.

After some time, you find yourselves moving along a narrow pathway, a smooth-carved wall to your right and a long sloping staircase to your left, coming up out of the ground. In short order, you see the front gate of what you assume is Blingdenstone. A massive construction of steel and mithral, you see plates of adamantine also welded into place. Eight deep gnomes stand guard, six of them bristling with weapons.

As you approach and kill off the motor, two of them step forward and stop you. The one without weapons addresses you all.

Jul 12, 2017 1:21 pm
Having decided on your stones, you make your way to the lift. A small being, formed solely of rock, stands at the bottom and guides you to the sled where you can load your carts. You cycle yourselves until you all arrive at the top of the lift, and face a wide smooth roadway. A pair of deep gnomes and a single larger creature, similar to the one below, stand at the top. One of the gnomes wears a purple and gold tabard with a goldworked design of a set of scales over a crossed quill and key.

You lot are the ones taking Dasco's load in? Leave it here and then head back down the lift. We'll take it from here, all looks to be in order. the tabard-wearing gnome says in stilted common.

The tabard-wearing gnome looks to Dustin. I do speak common, so you might address me directly. Many of the guards here only speak Undercommon, but those of us in the Quartermaster's employ do study other languages, as we deal with you surface types more frequently than they do. Now, what is this gift you want to impart, hmm?
Jul 12, 2017 2:44 pm
"Oh wonderful, I am glad to speak to someone in common. I have these." He hands over the diamond and amethyst.

"I wish to offer these gifts as a show of appreciation from the surface dwellers, myself included in that number. For the Quartermasters work and hopefully a chance to see this high road that the guards below mentioned to my Mentor." He says looking to Bildaweer.
Jul 12, 2017 2:53 pm
Bildaweer steps forwards and introduces the group. He points to Dustin and translates his words.
Jul 12, 2017 4:49 pm
Heartboiler huffs at the idea to try to bribe the quartermaster. If it was just her she would've taken the challenge of the maze without a second thought, but she didn't know if the others would slow her down much, and they weren't asking for any of her belongings to pitch in, she figured it wouldn't hurt to watch and see what happens. She crosses her arms and waits in the back as Dustin and Bildaweer speak and show the gems.
Jul 12, 2017 6:09 pm
Are you serious surface-dweller? Look at where we live. Literally in the rock. Why in the Hells would I want more gems and stones from you? the gnome says, voice full of disdain.

Look, enough wasting my time. Let me see the papers that old Dasco gave you, I'm sure he promised you something. I'll pay you here. Then, you'll walk the maze if you want to get into the city.

Cemos passes the bag of coins and the bottle of milky blue liquor to the gnome.

Rightly so then. Follow the High Road along to the second gate. There'll be more guards there. Dasco should have a body there to collect your stuff and pay you lot as well. That's where the normal loads get handed over, at least. they say as the bag of coins disappears beneath the tabard.

The squat figure moves to the side, as does the large pile of animated rock, as the gnome gestures to a nearby tower. Two armed gnomes step out and make their way to your cart, falling in line as an escort. You start the motor back up and begin the trek down the High Road. Along your right hand side, you see a sheer fall off into a winding maze of a tunnel, stretching from the main gate to a distance off in front of you. Also to the right, above you, is a series of zurkhwood and rope bridges, connecting a variety of towers and spires with slits carved into them. You see the glint of arrows and the gleam of armor through these slits, very aware of the eyes on your progress.

As you walk, one of the guards speaks up in broken common. You fight any invisible jellies coming here?

OOC:
if I have a good top down view of the maze I would like to commit to memory the most direct path out of the city.
aye that was a hard fight and it left it's mark. cemos points to the burn in his armor.
say do you have any blacksmiths or merchants in the city that would be able to sell me new armor or perhaps fix mine. cemos asks the guard and then looks to bildaweer for translation.

The guard looks to you both. A temple of jellies and oozes? That is, what's the word you use? Umm. Disgusting. Yes, that's it. Disgusting. Blacksmiths? Yes, we have several. Though most won't talk with surfacers usually. Perhaps if you do us some measure of service here, you could convince them to do something? The gnome says.

As for a top down view, you do not have one. It is heavily obscured in many areas, and stretches further than you can see to what must be the opposite side of this cavernous space. The area you are in is dimly lit, those of you with darkvision can comfortably see about 100 feet out, beyond that it just fades into darkness. Those without, you can really only see about 30 feet, just enough to see the sheer drop on the right and the wall to your left.

What services does Blingdenstone require? Or with whom should we speak to?
Jul 18, 2017 2:37 pm
Speak to those in the Trader's Grotto. They'll likely be the most willing to speak to outsiders. the guard says as you notice the ground begin to slope downwards.

Dustin remains dead silent just listening for now.

I suppose we will be relaying alot on you bildaweer for our time in this place.
OOC:
I think at some point it would be a good idea to discuss what is our ultimate goal. Not only for this city but what our plan is for taking on the demons that we keep bumping into. The only thing I can really think of is trying to get some sort of army together to go and fight them but I don't really know who would be willing to do that in the under dark.
Jul 19, 2017 3:06 pm
I suppose so. First things first, lets gain their trust and get you patched up Cemos. And, we probably need to figure out who the best person we need to speak about demons returning.

After saying this to Cemos and Dustin, Bildaweer turns to Uthal. Have you heard anything suspicious such odd creatures or perhaps demons popping up? Cemos, Dustin and I have been through a lot. Bildaweer then explains essentially everything that has transpired since escaping from the drows.
OOC:
I don't think anyone relayed this "in character" to ae. I figure that we gain their trust,
figure out the best people to speak to, listen to their responses and then formulate a plan. Any thoughts?

Heartboiler listens with interest to your story, nodding and adapting a thoughtful look at the description of the demons. Hmm, that sounds like quite the adventure. Thank you for telling me, Master Sparklefingers. Unfortunately I have not heard of, or seen any of those creatures or demons. It sounds like a nice enough fight. As you know I'm a daughter of the Kalagiano tribe, from the Spine of the World. I was not there when the orcs attacked, wiping out every man, woman and child carrying the Kalagiano name. It is my purpose in life to maintain the legend of my tribe. While she was speaking, Heartboiler remains her irritated expression, looking straight ahead as the images of the carnage she found flash before her eyes. She briefly closes her eyes and touches her sword .
That's why I'm going to Blingdenstone, we had contacts there and perhaps I can find them. If you, Shadowstalker and The Beard are going to the Trader's Grotto I will join you, it sounds like I might find someone there. She nods first to Dustin and then Cemos, speaking each of their nicknames with great respect.

I hope you find those contacts, ones people are important.

Going to do a bit of DM handwaving to get through this little bit, hopefully get you to where you can do some more effective decision making.

As you have chatted and walked along, you find yourselves moving down slightly quicker. You round a bend in the pathway and see another gate similar to the one before. Two massive towers embedded in the cavern walls flank the large metal structure. You can see four deep gnomes peering out of the thin windows, glints of arrows evident. Your guard raises his weapon in a salute and a low grinding sound is heard. The gates slowly open and a single gnome runs out, a nasty frown on his face.

Clearly you lot are the ones bringing Dasco's load through. Let's go. Without another word, he turns and proceeds through the gates.

You follow the gnome through the door after exchanging looks between each other. You find yourselves in a dark tunnel, lit only by the glow of some strange gems set into the walls about halfway up the 30' tall walls. They are spaced just far enough apart to not have any area brightly lit, but also no areas in complete darkness.

In a relatively short time, only a few minutes, you find yourselves in front of a stone and adamantine door. With a push, the gnome easily opens. You leave the dark tunnel behind and step into what looks like another world. These aren't sinister drow caverns or harsh, bare stone, but a subterranean land of warm colors and welcoming smells. The deep gnomes you see going about their business glance up at you with suspicion, but you instinctively understand that you face no threat here. The guard escorting you drops his severe frown to give a deep nod as he prompts you past this final gate.

Welcome to Blingdenstone, travelers. My apologies for the gruff treatment, we are leery of those seeking entry, but you've a member of a trading tribe with you, and you bear a load from Pickshine.

Adventure continues here!
