Chapter 7: To Gravenhollow

Dec 15, 2017 4:18 am
OOC:
Pretty sure you started this chapter as level 8, so feel free to go up to 9!
The next morning, you are re-provisioned and Savy and the other Zhentarim troops who followed you out here bid you farewell. You are left with Xeliss' Shield Guardian, Five Knights, One Scout, Five Guards, and Three Spies (Straight from the NPC section of the monster manual if you want to look up stats).

Melpomene, carrying the magical amulet that will guide you to your destination, points the direction that the magical artifact indicates, leading you through tunnel after tunnel. Not much seems to want to bother you for the first couple of days. On the third day, as you traverse a cavern which is dimly lit by luminous fungi and rubble-covered ground. You see what looks like what was once a stone wall off to the side of the path you travel. This might once have been a small town of some kind long ago.

As you reach the middle of the cavern, you hear a horrible screech from nearby among the rubble. Turning to see what's there, you spot a large monster which resembles a cross between a drow and a huge vulture. It has gigantic wings covered with dark feathers, gigantic claws at the end of its overly long arms, and a horrible beaked face with small black eyes; A vrock, a demon of the lower planes.

The vrocks launch themselves at the concentration of knights in the center of the group, screeching horribly. As they near, you can smell offal terrible enough to make you want to vomit. As they crash into the group of knights, the seasoned warriors are slow to react, some even seem to be frozen in fear. Two of them manage to avoid vicious blows from the demons, but one is impaled by the demons' long clawed hands and tossed aside like refuse.
OOC:
What do you do? Assume they are within walking distance, unless you want to be one of the scouts outside of the normal marching order, then they are three moves away

Remember to move up to level 9 before taking your action!
Dec 15, 2017 6:56 am
Hunter rears her riding lizard back and goads it to the side, moving as far as possible from the demons and the bloodbath. Time to put her research to the test, and she studies the vrocks while positioning herself near some of the rubble.
OOC:
How many vrocks? Would an Arcana check take up her Action?

Rolls

Arcana, Advantage - (1d20+5, 1d20+5)

1d20+5 : (10) + 5 = 15

1d20+5 : (15) + 5 = 20

Dec 15, 2017 12:51 pm
OOC:
Sorry about that, there are three of them and I meant to say it but I was doing cleaning between typing and must have missed it.

Are you just hoping for general info from the check? If you want to dig deep in your mind, then it'll be an action. Just pulling what's at the top if your head won't be
Dec 15, 2017 1:44 pm
OOC:
Meriele will be traveling outside of the marching order, with the scouts. I'll give Hunter's check a moment before reacting.
Dec 15, 2017 3:46 pm
OOC:
I will spend my Action to recall as much as I can from my time in Silverymoon.
Dec 16, 2017 1:32 pm
OOC:
How high is the cavern and how closely are the vrocks grouped?
Dec 16, 2017 8:04 pm
The cavern ceiling is uneven, ranging from 30 feet to 50 feet tall at some points. The vrocks are rather close together at the moment, having met some resistance in the group of knights that has kept them from separating too much.
Dec 16, 2017 8:06 pm
Hunter recalls that vrocks are mid-level demons in terms of power. They are dim-witted and seek only to kill and devour flesh. They are resistant to normal weaponry as well as cold, fire, and lightning magic. They are completely immune to poison and their screech has the ability to stun their prey. They also have the ability to release poisonous spores from their bodies.
Dec 18, 2017 10:36 am
Melpomene weaves a tune and calls up a Magic Circle to surround the creatures. Traceries of blue light writhe and swirl along the ground.

"Fall back!" she orders the knights, hoping that the circle will give them some time to escape to form ranks to better face this threat.
Dec 18, 2017 12:03 pm
Mai'ngor recognizes the vrocks as the same kind of demons the group fought back in Velkynvelve. Sinag's bright blade springs to life in his hands. He prepares to begin his war dance and charge the vrocks so the knights can fall back and form up.
OOC:
That's a bonus action taken to activate Sinag. Holding the rest of my action to ask this question: I take it Melpomene has reversed her Magic Circle to hold the demons in and protect those outside (cool move, btw!). Would it be possible to stand just outside the circle while fighting the demons and benefit from the protection?
Dec 18, 2017 5:10 pm
OOC:
Cast time of Magic Circle is one minute, so it's really not an in-combat spell

Beast, Fiend, Celestial, Humanoid, etc. all refer to various types of creatures. The term creature refers to basically anything that moves on its own

Melpomene plays a song familiar to her comrades as she casts a spell on the creatures to make them grow sluggish and slow. Over the tune she chants,
"A proud warrior stands

Meriele fires two arrows in quick succession at the Vrock that Mai'ngor has struck. The first fires with a violet trailing light.
OOC:
Not sure if Sinag's light would give disadvantage, or if Natural Explorer would give me advantage in this instance. Rolling 2 dice just in case.

On the first hit, I'd like to use Beguiling Arrow. DC 15 wisdom save, or the Vrock becomes Charmed by Mai'ngor until my next turn, to end early if Mai'ngor hits it before then.

And sorry for the spam of rolls. If I'm not mistaken, Attack #1 is 27 damage if it's not a crit, or 39 damage if it is.

Round One: Players
Xeliss' magic pulls at the life force of V1, but it is able to resist some of her power.

Melpomene's magic washes over the demons, slowing two of the three (V1/V2)

Mai'ngor strikes V2 twice in rapid succession, light-blade shaving the flesh from its body.

Meriele's first arrow strikes V2 with a flash of violet light, causing it to screech in pain. The second arrow strikes as well, but doesn't seem nearly as effective. It doesn't seem that the magic of Meriele's arrow changes its mind about the tikbalang.

The knights, bolstered by the presence of your group, begin to fight back against the demons. They manage to land several hits, but their weapons don't seem overly effective.

The rest of your group seems poised to join in until a group of smaller demons smashes into the flank of your group.

Seeing the two Vrocks hit by Melpomene's spell, I carefully remove a few components from a well-worn leather pouch and bring my hands together as if carrying an invisible crystal ball. A few muttered phrases later, a huge sphere of fire appears between the Vrocks as the heat is felt by everyone in the vicinity.

"Beware of their poisonous air and baleful call!" Hunter says, attempting to advise those in earshot. "Normal weapons aren't as effective, and neither are cold, fire, or lightning magic!"

The sorcerer sends a flurry of magical darts at Vrock2, attempting to bring it down so that Mai'ngor can devastate the others. Hunter tries to spare a glance to see what sort of smaller demons are attacking their flank.

Xeliss' flaming sphere appears in their midst and flames wash over V2 and V3. V2 barely seems to feel it at all and V3 is hurt only slightly more.

Hunter's missiles strike V2 rapidly, dropping it to the ground. The remaining two fly out and strike V1
OOC:
Technically you are supposed to choose the targets before you roll damage since they strike simultaneously, but not a big deal.

Also another odd thing is that you're only supposed to roll damage once and it applies to all missiles, which I didn't know until a few months ago. I will let you choose which way to do it, though.
Three of Meriele's arrows strike V1 in rapid succession. They don't seem as effective as they should be, but you can tell the demon is definitely in pain from the attacks.

Hunter maneuvers her lizard to the fallen knight, where she dismounts and approaches the broken body. She gazes upon it without expression, then looks to the survivors and asks, "What was their name? I never made it a point to learn any of your names, but starting today that will change, and I must honor their bravery today by remembering."

Already she pushes her hand towards the ground, extending her fingers to magically excavate a small grave.

Jan 6, 2018 12:17 pm
Melpomene kneels beside the corpse and places a hand upon his brow. She softly says, "Fisk, your gentle slumber is well-deserved. If you choose it, I wish you peace. I can open this door but once to return to us; it is your choice whether or not to walk through."

She leans back and pulls her lyre forward to begin a song. It starts soft and gentle as she sings of rest and peace in minor chords, then becomes stronger and wilder as it shift to a major key. She sings of fighting and valor and friendship, the song rising to a crescendo with a sudden unexpected stop on a final chord. Bright blue and gold magic swirls around her, building with the song, and on this final chord leaps over to the fallen knight.

Fisk groans as Melpomene finishes her song and his eyes open slowly. He looks to be very out of it, but it's clear that Melpomene has performed a miracle. The knights stand around in shocked silence, unsure of how to react.
Jan 7, 2018 6:17 am
Hunter smiles. She turns to the knights, guards, and scouts. "Remember this and take to heart what we do and why we do it. We are beset by many a terrible foe in these dark places, but we walk with the light of what is pure and good, and we shall not let a single foe stay us from our task. The daemonic refute the peace, and though we walk through the shadow into the maw of this foul black, we shall fear nothing.

"For we shall become what the daemon fears."

As you get up and begin to look around, one of the guards rushes up to you. You recall that his name is Devin, a short, stocky human with red hair and freckles all over his face. He stops as he reaches your group and salutes, "I'm sorry to report that Wayne and Garth have disappeared sometime during their watch," he says.

He leads you over to where they were located, a pair of stones not too far apart that gave a good view of the surrounding cavern. You are helped up to the top of the stones and see that their waterskins are still up there. You don't see any sign of a struggle atop the stone.

Several more days pass as you wander through the unending gloom of the Underdark. You travel in near-darkness most of the time unless you wander through caverns lit by luminescent fungi. Were it not for the guiding light of the amulet, you would have no idea where to go.

Tensions are running high among your underlings after the disappearance of Wayne and Garth. On the twelfth day out, as you travel through the quiet caverns, you hear shouting from the back of your group.

"Suck a beholder's eyestalk, you ignorant son of horse's ass!" one of the men, Otto by name, shouts from the back of the group, his raised voice piercing through the silence of the cavern and echoing ominously through the surrounding tunnels.

"You... you... son of a bitch," the other man, Alondo, shouts, far less eloquent imaginative Otto. He looks like he's about to turn away, but then launches a punch at Otto's face, connecting with the other man's cheek and sending him staggering back.

Jan 31, 2018 6:10 am
"What? I mean, there’s no harm in a friendly wager. They probably won’t kill each other. Right?"
Jan 31, 2018 10:18 am
Melpomene steps between the men and faces Alondo. This is the first time any of them have seen her truly angry, and she looks back and forth at them as she says, "Stop! Is it not enough that enemies surround us, longing for our death...you must bring strife between us? You are men, not boys. Resolve your differences or ask for help, but do not resort to fisticuffs. We cannot afford to do our enemies' job for them. There are too few of us left." By the end of her diatribe, sadness has tinged her anger.
Feb 2, 2018 3:45 pm
"Ain't them I'm worried about" Elfog responds to Xeliss, taking a long hard look at the surroundings.
Feb 2, 2018 3:59 pm
Hunter slides forward. "What was that all about, anyway?" she demands of the men.
Feb 4, 2018 3:56 am
Xeliss would say that Otto looks more skilled and tougher, but Alondo got the first hit in the exchange and doesn't look afraid to fight dirty. It could be anyone's victory at this point.

Both men have the decency to look ashamed as Melpomene berates them. Otto rubs the back of his head and looks away, not saying anything but looking profoundly uncomfortable.

Alondo turns beet red, but shakes his head, "Don't matter now," he says, obviously not keen on revealing the cause of the scuffle.
Feb 4, 2018 4:33 am

Otto shakes his head, "No, I think not," he says firmly as Alondo opens his mouth to speak, causing the other man to remain silent, "I can promise it won't cause further issues like this. That should suffice, should it not?"
Feb 6, 2018 2:58 am
"I see. Some great secret difference of opinion that caused a slight on one's honor? A noble chastisement in defense of virtue?" Hunter says, listing fanciful tropes with a contemplative finger on her lips. "How chivalrous!"

The half-elf returns her attention to Otto and Alondo, and she lowers her voice in a conspiratorial whisper, "Well now I simply must know. Did one of you, perchance, find yourself smitten with our strapping young stallion there? I won't tell."

Feb 16, 2018 4:22 am
Over the next few days, things are quiet and Otto and Alondo stay at opposite ends of the formation, but don't let their little argument change their effectiveness. Throughout the next few days, you get the feeling that you are being followed. You see shadows out of the corner of your eyes frequently, but there's never anything there.

The fourth day from their little fight, you smell death as you enter a new cavern. Moving cautiously in, you come across the remains of some drow, five in all, as well as their lizard mounts. The smell is not pleasant, but still isn't overpowering, so you know they haven't been dead for too long. From the distance that you're at now, you don't see any other dead bodies, whether they be friend or foe of the drow.

Elfog and Mai'ngor don't notice anything else odd in the cavern, but it's quite clear that the drow and their mounts were killed by something with large claws. Your paranoia proves to be correct as you see shadows dark lights in the shadows all around you, like the eyes of a predator watching its prey right before it pounces. As they get near, Sinag shines brightly, taking away the shadows and revealing the shadows as near-shapeless demons with large claws and insubstantial lower bodies that seem to float in the air. The song is interrupted as the light shines, giving you a much-needed first strike!

Mai'ngor, rushing forward, engages a small group of the demons, who stop circling to fight back. His light-formed blade connects solidly numerous times, dropping one of the demons, which turns into smoke and disappears.

"Form up, protect the spellcasters!" Fisk shouts to his comrades, who take up defensive positions around Melpomene, Hunter, and Xeliss.

Melpomene's spell washes over the creatures, slowing their movements. Three demons manage to shrug off the magic, but three others begin to move extremely slowly, unable to resist the spell's power.

Super Rage provides the wielder a cumulative bonus for every round of combat after its activation. The bonuses (+1 Attack Bonus, +1 Damage Bonus, +1 AC, and +1 To all Saving Throws) are not without cost as every round of combat while in Super Rage raises the wielder's Exhaustion Level by 1. The effects of Exhaustion are not felt until after the battle has ended unless the wielder's Exhaustion Level reaches Death, at which point the wielder's HPs drop to zero. Once Super Rage has been activated it will not come to an end until combat has been completed.

Round Two: Xeliss, Hunter, Melpomene, Elfog, Sarith
Xeliss transforms into a giant scorpion and rushes out to join her friends in the furious melee. She claws and stings the vile creatures. Based on the creatures' reactions, they are not resistant to her natural weapons. The one she hits with her stinger obviously feels the effects of the poison, but not as strongly as it could have.

The Shield Guardian follows Xeliss' orders without hesitation, moving up and smashing the face of one of the monsters. The thing staggers under the blow, but doesn't go down.

Hunter's magic missiles slam into the creature one after another, scorching its hide and hurting it badly, but it remains standing.

The demon that Melpomene targets with her magical assault, seems to shrug off the psychic attack as if it were nothing.

Pulling out the latent power of his clan's ancestral weapon, Elfog can hear the voices of his clan's heroes echoing in his mind, all raised in a song of war. His attacks are empowered, with two quick chops, guided by the hands of his heroes, he takes one of the beasts down.

Sarith moves gracefully under the onslaught, refusing to let his injuries slow him down. His blades flash out over and over, drawing blood from the demons with every strike. He puts most of his focus on a single creature, hoping to bring the number of enemies down to something more manageable and ends up taking down the one that Xeliss poisoned with her sting.

Mar 27, 2018 12:06 pm
"Keep going, then? Or do some of you need to have a moment?"
Mar 27, 2018 12:59 pm
After a couple more minutes of rest, Fisk approaches, bowing low when he gets there. It seems he truly sees your group as the leader of this expedition.

"My men are prepared to leave whenever you are," he says, "Sarith had us put out some scouts so that we don't get caught off guard again."

With that, you set off, scouts trickling in to give reports every 15 minutes or so. After a few hours of traveling, you see a scout rushing back, one of those shadow demons on his heels. Before anyone else can react, Meriele has three arrows into the air, all striking perfectly and bringing the creature down.

The scout moves to report, "There are more out there!" he says frantically, "Those and something... bigger!"
Mar 27, 2018 6:03 pm
"Perhaps it is time to spring our own ambush?" Hunter asks of everyone. "I'd rather the scouts fall back to a defensible position where we can try to trap or outflank those demons.

"Or is this already at our disadvantage? I am concerned about Elfog, in particular."
Mar 28, 2018 4:33 am
"Bigger? Like, bigger than me, or bigger than me as a Giant Scorpion?" I take another look at Elfog, then respond to Hunter skeptically. "I know we want to get this done quickly, but is everyone else up for the task?"
Mar 28, 2018 7:05 pm
"Bigger than both together," he says grimly. A moment later, some of the smaller shadow demons appear at the edge of your vision and begin to get closer. You guards form up ranks and engage the demons' mindless ferocity with discipline. You hear Fisk shouting above the din of suddenly joined battle, "Hold the line! None of them get through!"
Mar 28, 2018 7:14 pm
Hunter hisses, "Too late. Looks like we're in this whether we like it or not!" She sweeps her hand in front of her, and a row of glyphs light into existence as she prepares her arcane power.
Mar 28, 2018 10:35 pm
Not prepared for another battle, but unwilling to sit out on a fight, Elfog unhooks his axe.

"They don't know when to quit!!"
Mar 30, 2018 7:03 pm
As you prepare for combat, you see more of the shadowy demons approaching and then, from the darkness, you see something else.

A large, purple-skinned male humanoid figure is approaching from the darkness. It stands about ten feet tall with smooth and flawless skin, it is supernaturally beautiful. It's glowing eyes seem to lock onto all of yours all at one time, promising a mixture of pleasure and pain beyond imagining. At its side is a massive wavy-bladed sword that drips acid as the creature glides forward. It smiles when it sees you and speaks in a smooth voice, "Standing to face me? Brave, but stupid," it says moving gracefully across the cavern floor.

"Not so simple," Hunter explains, setting her feet. "This is not just a demon, it's a demon lord! The others we've faced are fodder compared to this one. Still, maybe I can delay it a bit."

Picking one of the glyphs floating before her, Hunter twists her fingers in a circle around it, illuminating it brightly. She mutters, "You should be running now."

As her glyph continues to brighten, Hunter traces her finger along the outer circle. She says to the party, "Find us a way out of here. We'll get back on course once we've left these fiends behind."

Finally, Hunter presses the glowing symbol and the light flashes out towards the battle line, where it sinks into the ground between the demons and the soldiers. With a rumble, a Wall of Stone erupts from below, rising up to the ceiling of the cavern and stretching across to seal off the passage.

Suddenly cut off from the enemy, Fisk and his men fall in behind you as you begin to move out. You can see that many of them are shaken by how close they came to Graz'zt.

From the corridor, you hear clawing and screeching as the demons try to bust their way through. Suddenly you hear an amused laugh and a tremendous crash. Hunter can feel that the wall has been breached.

From behind you, you can hear the sound of howling demons and that cold laugh coming upon you. As you push on further, you encounter a patch of rough ground that threatens to slow your progress.
OOC:
Going to do this as a chase scene!

Each player needs to roll a DC 12 Acrobatics check. If half or more of you pass, then your group manages to keep moving without slowing down. If more than half fail the check, then you are slowed down and the enemies get closer!

Hunter tries to smooth out as much of the ground as possible with Mold Earth, though she knows the cantrip is limited and the group is too large and trying to move too fast. Still, every bit helps, right?

As you pass over the uneven ground, a couple of you stumble. Through the quick reflexes of your companions, you manage to keep pace with the rest of the group and proceed get your footing back as you leave the rough patch.

Veering around a rocky outcropping as you round a corner, you hear the demons smash into it. Howls and the shattering of stone can be heard from down the corridor behind you.

Moving swiftly through the corridors, you eventually hear the demons howling behind you receding into the background and you hear screams from another creature that you haven't heard before. It seems that they came across the path of some denizens of the underdark and were distracted.

Do you want to keep running, or do you want to slow down?
Apr 5, 2018 4:34 pm
"When they finish with that poor soul, they'll come after us," gasps Hunter, trying to catch her breath. "Sarith, find us a path out of here and as far from them as possible. But mind our ultimate destination, Gravenhollow."

Mai'ngor's spell helps Elfog keep up slightly better, though he still feels extremely exhausted.

Sarith leads you away at as quick a pace as you can follow, with him returning to sight only long enough to point out the best path forward. After what seems like hours, he appears in the tunnel before you, "I think we've gone far enough," he says, then turns to Hunter, "I'm sorry, but I couldn't focus on Gravenhollow, so I don't know if we're neared than we were or not. Plus, she has the necklace," he says, pointing to Melpomene, "We can get back on track after we've rested a bit, though, as long as we're safe.".
Apr 9, 2018 8:38 pm
"That's fine," says Hunter between breaths. "I just wanted to get out of there. Is... is everyone here?"
Apr 11, 2018 8:08 pm
After a quick headcount, you find that all of Fisk's men are accounted for and mostly unharmed, as well as all of your companions. You're all very tired after your long run, with the possible exception of Mai'ngor and Sarith, who seem to have an almost unfair amount of stamina.
Apr 11, 2018 11:03 pm
Leaning over, his hands on his knees, Elfog takes a long breath. "Needing a rest!" he says, slowly standing straight, looking over the surroundings.

"Everyone good with settling down here for a bit?"
Apr 12, 2018 3:28 am
"Yeah yeah, get some sleep." I lean against the nearest rock wall, finding comfort in its solid, jagged form as I contemplate how to keep my friends alive for the next battle, and any battles after that. Clearing my mind of the day's activities and stresses, the sound of distant chittering and a cold, welcome breeze finally lull me to sleep.

With Elfog feeling much better, you begin moving again, following the path shown to you by the amulet.

For the next 45 days, you travel through the lightless corridors of the Underdark, occasionally encountering monsters, but thankfully no more demons.

"There's something ahead, be cautious, I will be watching," Sarith reports one day as you are following the amulet's guidance.

As you round a corner, you see a many-legged reptile stretch out as if it has been sitting for a long while, avoiding your eyes as it looks to the rocky floor at your feet. "About time you lot arrived! Come! The library bid me guide you to the gates, and I've waited too long for you already."

Hunter and Xeliss both recognize this as a basilisk, a creature that can turn a man to stone with merely a look. That explains why it keeps staring at the ground rather than at you.
Apr 18, 2018 9:34 pm
I stop looking at the creature.
Apr 18, 2018 10:17 pm
Hunter follows the many-legged creature silently, though her excitement at having finally reached their destination is evident on her face.
Apr 19, 2018 12:06 am
Unsure what to make of the creature, Elfog stays several paces behind Xeliss and Hunter. While not nearly as excited as Hunter, he is thankful for the break from the monotony of the last several weeks.
Apr 19, 2018 9:40 am
Melpomene also follows, her steps lighter than they have been in months.
Apr 30, 2018 8:11 pm
You follow the basilisk forward and through a couple of winding tunnels, ending before a large pair of basalt doors, flanked by two huge stone statues. The basilisk pays the statues no heed and presses against the door, which opens easily at his touch.

Walking across the threshold of Gravenhollow is like stepping into another realm. The oppressive gloom of the Underdark is replaced by light and a sense of openness that bnngs back memories of the surface world.

The corridor beyond the gates is wide enough for ten people to walk side by side. and the ceiling's height reminds you of the great halls of Gauntlgrym. The corridor opens into a central well, with walkways crossing its span to the opposite side. You can barely see the ends of the level to your nght and left, with doors opening into so many rooms that you doubt you could explore them all in a single day.

The ceiling is bright, with rainbows trapped in hundreds of crystal formations combin1ng to create a warm and inviting illumination. Looking down is a dizzying experience. Staircases connect to different levels below, and you soon lose count of how far down they go.

A stout, rocky creature detaches from the perfectly smooth wall to your left, leaving an imprint of its body in the wall that quickly smooths out and fades from sight. "Trravelerrrrsss. I am Hourm. The masterrrsss arre occupied. Therre arre rroomsss forr all of you. Choose yourr own. The rresourrcesss of Grravenhollow arre at yourr disssposssal. You need only asssk."
Apr 30, 2018 8:35 pm
Mai'ngor's demeanor instantly changes with the lifting of the gloom. The horse-headed fey bows to Hourm and begins asking him about Gravenhollow's history, its fuction, its inhabitants...
Apr 30, 2018 8:47 pm
Hunter looks over the rocky creature as Mai'ngor speaks, comparing its appearance to the earthen elemental-like creatures in Blingdenstone.
Apr 30, 2018 8:54 pm
Hunter recognizes this as the same type of creature that you encountered in Blingdenstone when you restored the menhir after defeating three earth elementals.

Standing with his mouth agape, Elfog spends a moment just taking in his surroundings, only half listening to the Mai'ngor's discussion with Hourm.

I hope you forgive me if I don't try to duplicate the extended consonants of the above post in my own writings!
History: "Gravenhollow has always been here and remembers all that has happened and all that will happen within its halls. The librarians keep track of all that happens in the Underdark and record it."

Function: "As you may have surmised, this is a library. An untold amount of knowledge is accumulated here in a number of forms; placed into crystals, carved into stone tablets, written in books..."

Inhabitants: "Aside from we assistants and any visitors, there are the librarians. Ulthar is the Keeper of the Past, Urmas is the Keeper of the Present, and Ustova is the Keeper of the Future. You will also find 'echoes' of past and future visitors wandering the halls, searching for knowledge. You may speak to them, and they are usually more than happy to talk to people."
May 3, 2018 5:29 pm
"Are we safe here?" Hunter asks. She looks over at the party's escort, gauging how exhausted they must be.
May 3, 2018 5:53 pm
Hourm's expression doesn't change that you can see, but you get the impression that he may be slightly insulted by the question, though he doesn't say that he is, "Why of course. No harm shall be done to anyone here. Fear not, you are under our protection."
May 3, 2018 5:56 pm
Hunter turns to Fisk. "You and the others ought to get some rest. We will likely be here for some time as we try to glean whatever we can about what's going on in the Underdark. I'm sure if you need us, someone in this library can arrange messages.

And, thank you. Without your efforts, we would not have come this far."
May 6, 2018 2:46 pm
Melpomene nods her agreement with Hunter's sentiments and smiles at the men in gratitude before returning her attention to their guide.
May 7, 2018 8:20 pm
Fisk and the others salute and then turn to Hourm for directions on where to go. With a wave of his hand, another rock-creature pulls out of the wall and leads them down the stairs.
May 7, 2018 8:24 pm
Hunter watches them depart, then returns her attention to the library. "We should talk with the librarians. If they know of the daemonic presence, we can find out how it happened, and perhaps how we can stop it."
May 9, 2018 10:35 pm
"I'll go with ya, but you'll be doing the talking."
May 10, 2018 1:12 am
"Alright. Maybe they got some books that can help or something."
May 10, 2018 8:35 pm
Hourm nods, "I will take you to see them now," he says as he turns and begins walking away. Though he looks slow and bulky, the creature moves quickly and stops in front of a large door with innumerable images carved into its surface. He stops in front of it and places a hand on it, causing it to open of its own power.

The door opened, you see a large room ringed with a massive amount of bookshelves. A huge table dominates the center of the room, covered in books, scrolls, and various other trinkets. The smell of aged parchment is strong in this room. Seated at the table is a stone giant who wears flowing white robes. He looks up as you enter and waves you in.

"I am Ulthar, Keeper of the Past," he says in a deep, resonant voice, "Come in, please, and take a seat. I sense you must have many questions for me?"
May 10, 2018 9:24 pm
Hunter has heard of stone giants, but has never seen one up close. She fumbles in her curtsy. "Lord Keeper," she says, "thank you for accepting us into your library.

"The respite is welcome at this hour. Fiends from the Abyss stalk the darkness, likely brought forth to serve the Demon Lords that have broached this plane. As caretaker of the past, are you familiar with the cause of this incursion?"
May 14, 2018 7:02 pm
The giant listens intently to Hunter's words and pauses for a moment before nodding and answering in a deep, resonant voice, "I am," he says slowly, "And I am aware of how big this problem could become if it is not taken care of as soon as possible. Tell me, child... if you weren't to receive any guidance from my kin or I, what would you do and how would you seek out the source of these troubles in order to solve the problem at hand?"
May 14, 2018 8:18 pm
Whether awed by the presence of the library's caretaker, the significant size difference between herself and the giant, or reverted back to her apprenticeship to knowledge, Hunter seems to not notice the child title. "Truthfully, it feels as though this is our only hope," she says. "Perhaps there are resources available on the surface that might match a fraction of what you offer, but the Abyss is far too strange and alien for lesser creatures to fully comprehend.

"If we find no assistance here, I can only think to return to the cities of Gauntlgrym and Silverymoon. Or, if we become pressed for time due to the tromp of more than one demon prince, stand fast in an attempt to try and banish them back to their planes."
May 17, 2018 2:22 am
The giant nods, "A fair enough plan, I think. Fortunately for you, we will be happy to assist you. We cannot affect events outside of Gravenhollow, but we can give you knowledge to aid in your fight," he says and then reaches behind him to a shelf, plucking a small pouch off of it and handing it over to Hunter, "In here is a Stonespeaker Crystal. Take this into the library and attune yourself to it. It will grant you visions of the past, present, and future that may aid in your battle."
May 17, 2018 7:23 am
Hunter accepts the pouch with two hands, bowing her head in respectful acknowledgement. "May this be used by my friends as well? The more eyes in research, the quicker we might unmask the veil."
May 17, 2018 8:12 pm
"Of course," he replies, "All of the resources of the library are open to you and your companions. We recognize the grave threat that you face and will do all that we can to help you."
May 17, 2018 8:13 pm

"Thank you, Keeper Ulthar," says Hunter. She looks to Melpomene and begins to seek out a section of the library to conduct her research. "Could you help me with this? Your knowledge of lore may benefit from this crystal's insight."
May 18, 2018 9:58 am
Melpomene beams as she replies, "Of course, I would be delighted."

I have always dreamed of visiting this place...how amazing that I am actually here.
May 22, 2018 2:10 am
As you think about finding a place to do your research, you come to a large stone archway with an inscription on it: "The past is a crystal, for it can be seen from many facets yet it always remains the same."

The room is large and filled with thousands of books as well as a number of different colored crystals which float at different locations throughout the room. As Hunter enters with the stone, the crystals seem to glow brighter and she can feel her stone pulsing with energy.

Mai'ngor looks closely at the gems and it appears that there's something deeper within the light that moves, though he can't see much. As he looks in, he almost thinks he sees a humanoid form within one, but then the feeling passes.
May 22, 2018 10:26 pm
"Here," Hunter says, holding the crystal out to Melpomene. "I think I might be tired; can't focus on it just yet." Her voice carries a bit of an edge.
May 22, 2018 11:24 pm
Melpomene accepts it with an understanding smile and sings some soft notes, trying to find the tone of the crystal.
May 24, 2018 1:19 am
As Melpomene attunes herself to the crystal, she is plunged into darkness. When she emerges, the world is hazy and tinted gray. She feels as though she is looking to the past and she watches the events unfold before her.

An imperious drow archwizard in spider-silk robes casts a mighty conjuration spell. As the ritual draws toward its conclusion, a web of Faerzress energy expands outward. The wizard seems alarmed by this, his efforts to complete the spell growing more crazed as he realizes he's lost control.

And then, madness! Rifts open in the web of energy around him. These cracks stretch and widen, and through them come horrific fiends that scream, shriek, and howl as they are wrenched from the Abyss and cast into the Underdark. A woman's deep. dark laugh echoes in your mind as the drow wizard shrinks away from the demonic hordes he has unwittingly unleashed.
May 24, 2018 9:14 am
Melpomene struggles to widen the vision, looking around in the grey to find clues to the question: Where?
May 24, 2018 3:55 pm
Hunter rubs her temples and wonders how one can find some calming herbal tea... or something stronger.
May 25, 2018 1:57 am
As Melpomene looks around, she can see the inside of what appears to be a study. Books line the walls in neat shelves, strange liquids bubble and steam inside of a number of glass vials on a nearby table, papers, quills, and books are stacked atop the desk nearby.

Before Melpomene can do anything about the vision, she is catapulted out of it and back into her own senses in the library of Gravenhollow, feeling drained and weak after her experience.
May 25, 2018 9:21 am
Shakily, she reaches out to Hunter's arm to stabilize herself. She relates her vision with as much detail as she can while she regains her composure.
May 25, 2018 4:23 pm
"My former mentor warned me about control. I still struggle with it," Hunter says, sighing with a mixture of melancholy and frustration. "At least we have an idea of how it all started. Now, how do we stop it?"

She pinches her thumbnail into her fingertips as she mulls over her own thoughts. "Strange that you heard a woman. Perhaps this drow wizard's matron? Finding pleasure with the release of demons tells me that she has manipulated the man into doing so, or otherwise stands to benefit from his action. I wish I knew why."

Hunter holds her hand out for the crystal. "Let me try again. Perhaps with the specific question in mind, I will have a better focus." She begins to think about drow matrons and their ties to the Abyss as part of her attempts at attunement.[/b]

As Hunter begins to focus on the gem once again, she can feel a soft pounding in her skull. Trying to push past the mental block, she forces her mind to go further and further back into the past, trying to draw it forth to view.

Suddenly, there's a loud ripping noise and a bright flash of light. You can all suddenly smell the scent of the sea mixed with flowers, fresh fruit, and baked bread. When your vision clears, you see that someone new is in the room with you; a young attractive woman of maybe eighteen sits, confused, on the ground in front of Hunter, long brunette hair cascading down her shoulders is luxurious curls.

More shocking, however, is the fact that she's totally naked. None of you save Hunter recognize the girl immediately, though it hits those of you who saw Hunter's transformation before: Elayna

Wha... what happened? Where am I?" she stammers out, looking confused and scared.
May 30, 2018 4:53 am
Hunter drops the crystal and grabs the side of her head, probing the mass of her hair into unkempt tangles as she wildly checks whether or not she has a hole in her skull.

"You," she declares, staring wide-eyed at Elayna. Carefully, Hunter reaches out to point a finger at the sitting girl and leans gingerly forward until she can touch Elayna's skin.

May 31, 2018 12:52 pm
The young woman gratefully takes the cloak without looking at Melpomene. Her eyes are instead locked on Hunter, "Hunter? Is that you?" she asks, sounding confused and unsure.

Hunter's head feels clear for the first time in months, and the weight around her neck from the amulet no longer seems to be so heavy. And, thankfully, she doesn't have any new holes in her head.

Looking around, Mai'ngor doesn't see anyone nearby except for his companions.

Jun 22, 2018 1:03 am
The stone creature nods, "That will be acceptable," it says, turning and leading you toward the Keepers' library. When you enter, you see Ulthar in the same place as before, in addition to another giant. They appear to be deep in discussion when you enter, but stop speaking when they see you.

Ulthar cocks his head to the side as he looks Elayna over, then turns to Hunter, "I'm surprised to see you again so soon, little one. This is Urmas, Keeper of the Present," he says as way of introduction.

Urmas looks Hunter and Elayna over, "It is good to meet you," he says, looking at Hunter, then turns to Elayna, "I believe this one is new?"
Jun 22, 2018 1:03 am
Elayna looks overwhelmed by the massive creatures, but stands strong by Hunter's side, though she doesn't say anything.
Jun 26, 2018 3:43 am
While everyone is distracted, Xeliss takes out the crystal again and stares into it, curious about how it works.
Jun 26, 2018 3:50 pm
Hunter curtsies. "This is Elayna. She accompanied me inside an amulet I wear, though neither of us knew she could be released. We were using the Stonespeaker Crystal when Elayna suddenly appeared."
Jun 26, 2018 5:26 pm
In the Keepers' Library
Ulthar looks intrigued, "I see. And why was she inside the amulet in the first place?" he asks, curiosity clear in his deep voice.

In the Archives of the Past
As Xeliss focuses her mind on the gem, she suddenly feels as if she's falling through blackness. When the feeling passes, she is in a nearly-colorless passage. As she looks around, she sees something:

A deep gnome spurned by others of his kind weeps as he wanders the dark tunnels, talking to the things that crawl and seep from the walls. You see him adopt two slick patches of ooze, sensing his innate power over them. He plays with them as if they were children, chasing them through the gloomy depths.

Something changes, and the oozes flow away. The deep gnome runs after them, fearful of being alone once again. You feel a great hunger seize him. He experiences visions that pass into your vision, showing what appears as a paradise to him but an oozing nightmare for all others. The great hunger speaks to him, his already broken mind a shield against the hunger's shattering power.

That power seems to recognize and acknowledge something in the gnome that will serve it well. The great hunger has a name - Juiblex. And its power . . . oh, such great and terrible power! It grants the gnome the ability to command the little hungers - his
children - so that they can return to the place that cast them out and devour it all!

Just before being ripped from the vision, Xeliss finally recognizes the deep gnome as the Pudding King - The deep gnome that commanded the oozes of Blingdenstone and tried to destroy it.
Jun 26, 2018 5:53 pm
"I do not know the truth behind her... imprisonment, if that is what it was," says Hunter. "I only know the story related to me when I came across the amulet." She attempts to remove the necklace, or at the very least reveal the diamond-ringed opal. With an apologetic look to Elayna, Hunter describes the tale of the young farm girl cast aside by her noble lover, who destroyed herself while wearing the necklace.

Hunter continues, "After coming into possession of the necklace, Elayna and I began to communicate in thoughts. It was... awkward at first, but over time we both managed to co-exist. And now she stands here as flesh, and we are no longer linked in mind."
Jun 28, 2018 8:46 pm
In the Keepers' Library
Hunter has no issues removing the beautiful necklace from her person. As the tale is recounted, Elayna's eyes grow misty and a couple of tears run down her cheeks, but she stands her ground and doesn't turn into a sobbing mess. It seems that her time sharing a mind with Hunter has toughened her emotionally.

Ulthar nods, "Ah, I see," he says as if this makes perfect sense, "And you attempted to use the crystal in the Archives of the Past?" he asks. When he receives confirmation, he smiles, "Fascinating. The Archives and the crystals work together to bring the past and present together, which is what allows you to enter the visions and see them in the flesh. When you attempted to attune to the crystal in there, it brought the past," he explains, motioning to Elayna, then motions to Hunter as he finishes, "Into the present."
Jun 28, 2018 10:40 pm
Hunter considers the explanation. "If we leave the library, will she be forced to return to the amulet?"
Jul 3, 2018 12:13 am
"That, I cannot say," the giant replies, "This is quite an odd occurrence, I must say. I doubt that she would be forced back within it, but I cannot make any guarantees."
Jul 3, 2018 12:26 pm
"I don’t like this... vision magic. It’s unnatural." Xeliss holds the crystal in front of her and examines it suspiciously.
Jul 3, 2018 4:00 pm
Hunter looks to Elayna. "I suppose we'll have to take our chances," she says, then smiles. She looks up at the librarians. "Is there a wardrobe? For her size?"
Jul 4, 2018 9:21 am
Melpomene smiles gently at Xeliss and replies, "Most magic is."
Jul 4, 2018 1:17 pm
So lost is he in his own thoughts, Mai'ngor hardly registers what is going on with Xeliss. Of late he has been succumbing to despair for being the last of his kind. Here, deep in the bowels of the earth he may as well be dead to the surface. Who then will remember the tribe, it's songs and its deeds? The tikbalang will leave no legacy. But here now is a place that holds a memory of all things! This place will remember.
Jul 5, 2018 4:34 am
"Not my magic. I feel its energy flow through the earth like so many roots. It's comforting in a way that this gem isn't. This... this gem showed me the Pudding King. He was a deep gnome, like me. But transformed by some even darker magic. It gave him power."
Jul 6, 2018 9:24 am
Melpomene nods, "Ah, yes. I remember reading about him. He nearly destroyed Blingdenstone before your people stopped him."
Jul 6, 2018 7:28 pm
The giants look surprised by Hunter's request for a wardrobe, turning to look at one another. After a brief moment of silent communication, Urmas nods, "I think we can find something. If you could follow Hourm?"

Turning around, you see that Hourm has appeared and is waiting patiently for you to follow him.
Jul 6, 2018 9:56 pm
Hunter curtsies her thanks, then takes Elayna's hand. "Let's find you something nice," she says, leading the way to Hourm.
Jul 10, 2018 12:55 am
Hourm leads the girls through a number of passages and ends up in a room full of assorted objects. Fine clothing, random weapons and armor, random books and scrolls... everything seems to be in here. "This is sort of a... lost items room," he explains as he begins looking through it. Eventually, he stops and pulls out a trunk and hands it to Hunter. Inside is an assortment of fine silk clothing, carefully folded to minimize creasing.

Elayna's eyes go wide, "They're beautiful," she whispers, dropping the cloak she's been wearing and immediately beginning to get dressed.

Jul 13, 2018 9:05 pm
Mai'ngor feels himself falling away into darkness. The fall is very peaceful and seems to last a long time before he suddenly begins to slow. When he finally gets his bearings, he seems to be in complete darkness, until his eyes adjust and he finds himself floating among the heavens, surrounded by stars and planets as they spin lazily through their cosmic home.

Turning around by force of will, he finds that he is very close to a bright orange ball of flame that takes up his whole field of vision, though he feels no heat from it. He feels, behind him, a beautiful song, though he doesn't understand the words, almost as if the cosmos itself is singing to him. As he relaxes in the strange place, he realizes that the music is growing louder, and it seems to be approaching from behind.

Looking back, he sees a tremendous male figure approaching the star, clad in pure white and gold cloth of the finest make. The figure dwarfs Mai'ngor, though it is still much smaller than the star itself. It studies the massive cosmic body before smiling and nodding, "Thank you," he says and then suddenly reaches into the flames. After some time, the figure withdraws his hand and holds a very familiar hilt in his hand - Sinag!

He inspects the hilt for some time before placing it against the 'surface' of the star. If possible, the glow becomes even brighter as the hilt simultaneously takes light from the star while somehow brightening it. As he pulls the hilt away, there is a blade made of pure light coming forth from it. After one final inspection, he smiles even wider and nods to it, holding it in front of his face, "Yes, you will do nicely," he says to it affectionately, "You can help the mortals drive away the darkness from their world in a way that no one else can."

Suddenly, he bursts into motion, spinning around and heaving the blade away from him, where it disappears in the distance, presumably to land on the surface of Toril, where Mai'ngor becomes one of its wielders in the fight against the dark.

The image fades away, plunging Mai'ngor into total darkness. Eventually the darkness passes and Mai'ngor finds himself in a small room with a table and two chairs in the center, walls lined with large windows to let in all the natural light one could ever desire.

A door that Mai'ngor had not seen before opens on the far wall and the same white-and-gold-clad figure enter the room and smiles, "Please, take a seat," he says motioning to the table, "We have something of import to discuss."
Jul 13, 2018 9:06 pm
Those of you in the Archives of the Past watch as Mai'ngor experiences a vision as you've seen a few times before. it doesn't end as the others have, though, with a sigh of relief, but with a soft pop as Mai'ngor disappears completely from the room. There is a soft clink as the crystal falls to the stone floor.
Jul 13, 2018 9:09 pm
As Hunter moves toward the books and scrolls, Hourm places a gentle hand up, "I'm sorry, but I cannot allow you to look at those. As you must now be aware, this place is somewhat removed from time itself," he says gently, "These books and scrolls may have secrets of the past or future that should not be known to mortals. They were left by past and future visitors and we cannot let them enter the hands of those who should not have them. Clothing will do little harm, but knowledge, I'm afraid, is quite a different matter."
Jul 14, 2018 4:50 pm
Hunter's lip quivers, and her eyes take on a pleading look for only a brief second before she remembers where she is. As though shaking away a memory, she straightens and collects herself. "I understand," she says.

She looks over to the weapons and armor, and says while pointing, "What about those? I would like Elayna to have something to defend herself, should the need arise."
Jul 15, 2018 11:26 am
Mai'ngor finds himself obeying the resplendent being and taking a seat, curious what such an entity would have to discuss with him.
Jul 16, 2018 8:48 pm
Hourm nods, "That would be fine," he says.

Elayna searches through the weapons and armor and, with some help from Hunter, manages to find a suit of leather armor, a shortbow, and a shortsword. She looks thoroughly out of place with the equipment, but it does seem to calm her down a bit.
Jul 16, 2018 8:52 pm
The figure sits in the seat opposite of Mai'ngor and looks him over, "I suppose I should introduce myself, shouldn't I?" he says with a calming smile, "I am best known as Lathander by mortals, so I think that is what you should call me. I see that you have come by one of my creations," he says, obviously referring to Sinag, "I would like to know how you came to find her and what your thoughts of her are."
Jul 16, 2018 10:49 pm
Hunter tries to surreptitiously run her finger along the spine of a nearby book while Elayna and Hourm are supposedly distracted... but remembering how the library seemingly knows about and warps itself to fit the whim of its keepers, thinks better about absconding with the lost tome and busies her attention with the weapons and armor.

When Elayna has laid claim to the equipment, Hunter says, "Perfect. Let's return to the others and see what they've discovered."

"I rememember it like it was yesterday, Great One. She called out in the dark, and I answered. And countless times since then she has been a light in the darkest of hours."

A pause, then Mai'ngor's expression changes. His tone remains respectful but his eyes smolder. "Do you know of Bathala, Anitun-Tabu, Dumakulem, and the other sky-gods of my people? Or are you one of them in different guise? Do you know why my home was destroyed and my people slain?"
Jul 17, 2018 4:37 am

Mai'ngor
Lathander smiles at Mai'ngor, "That's good," he says happily, "It's good that she's fulfilling her ultimate purpose."

When Mai'ngor asks about the sky gods, Lathander's expression dims a little, "Yes, you could say that I am associated with them, though only loosely," he says, "I can't tell you the why of your peoples' destruction, as that information is not mine to provide."

"I can see that you are a warrior of no small heart. You fight with passion, for the good of others," he says, paying the tikbalang a great compliment, "You use Sinag to banish the darkness from the world, but I can see that a heavy darkness still lies upon your heart. Perhaps I can help dispel that darkness, just as you have for so many others."

Hunter
Hourm either doesn't notice or just ignores Hunter's desire to take the forbidden knowledge from this place and leads her and Elayna out once they are ready to rejoin their companions.

Hunter arrives back at the Archives of the Past just in time to see that Mai'ngor is gone and hear the others talking about his disappearance.

Jul 24, 2018 3:31 pm
Mai'ngor isn't sure what Lathander expects of him. The tikbalang nods his assent to whatever it is the god wishes to do.
Jul 24, 2018 4:07 pm
Lathander smiles brightly and claps the tikbalang on the shoulder, "Very good," he says, "What I ask of you won't be easy, but I think it is probably what you had planned to do anyway. I request that you take Sinag and do whatever you can to banish the demon lords from the world before they gain their full strength and wreak untold havoc on the world. I would do so myself, but the laws of the universe prevent the gods from walking among the living too frequently, lest we damage the fabric of reality itself. In exchange for your service to the good of the world, I will do whatever is within my power to heal the despair in your heart."

With the god's request and vague promise heard, Mai'ngor feels himself falling once again as the room fades away. When the feeling ends, he finds himself once more among his companions.
Jul 24, 2018 4:54 pm
Hunter blinks at Mai'ngor's appearance, then looks at Elayna with an arched eyebrow. She taps the copper wire wrapped around her ear, with a quizzical quirk at the corner of her lips.

"That much can already be inferred, as we're the ones running around trying to figure this all out," Hunter says, a bit of venom in her words. She stops herself and holds a hand up. "I'm sorry. I am glad you've discovered that as a certainty, believe me.

"So we know a drow wizard unleashed this maddening horde,"
continues Hunter, looking down at the crystal. "And we know that a number of demon lords now walk this plane. The question becomes, why?"

She paces, absently touching the crystal to her forehead in thought. "Drow do not worship the demon lords, save for the Spider Queen. Why bring the Faceless Lord, the Dark Prince, or the Master of the Spiraling Depths into his chamber? A spell of that power, to rend the gate big enough for such beings to enter our realm, at the same time?"

As though struck by inspiration, Hunter stares at the crystal once more. She focuses her attention upon it, attuning herself to the crystal's energy.

Hunter falls away into the throes of a vision...

You behold the true form of the Demon Queen of Spiders - that of a black. bloated arachnid with the head of a female drow. Nestled in the webs all around her are thousands upon thousands of gray eggs. Lolth knows s he is being scried, her fury tangible as her mind reaches out to find you. Her shriek of rage as she's shut out by the powerful wards of Gravenhollow echoes in your mind as the vision is suddenly torn away to darkness.

The rest of you see Hunter fall to the floor unconscious. After several minutes, she wakes up, head throbbing like nothing she's ever experienced before and with the feeling that she narrowly escaped having her soul devoured.

Jul 27, 2018 7:56 pm
Hunter sighs, rubbing her eyes. "We know the drow released the demon lords. If they could not control the gate to the Abyss, is it reasonable to assume this gate remains open? We would need to figure out a way to close it, and to banish the demon lords back to their hellish plane."

She pushes herself off the ground, setting her legs under her before standing. "Perhaps we need to leave these archives of the past and visit present events. Some research there might offer insight as to how we combat the threat."
Jul 28, 2018 11:12 am
"Agreed. I find it curious that you were given a glimpse of Lolth's present. My own vision was of Lathander creating Sinag, presumably deep in the past. But then he spoke to me of the world's present troubles. Perhaps the boundaries between past and present and even future are blurred here."

Hourm is more than happy to lead you to the Archives of the Present. When you arrive, you see a carving on the archway above the door: The present is like sand, ever flowing and escaping one's grasp without mercy or respite

This series of rooms is filled with a ton of books, tables, and other strange devices that must be used in some way for storing knowledge. You are, once again, alone.
Aug 3, 2018 8:44 pm
"What do we wish to know?" Hunter asks, though whether or not it was rhetorical is unclear, as she does not seem to direct the question at anyone. "Maybe what the drow are doing now, after releasing the demons and their spawn?"

Her own question answered, Hunter focuses upon the crystal in her hand as she considers the drow and their plans.
Aug 9, 2018 1:56 am
As Hunter feels herself being pulled into the gem, she begins to see a vision....

A drow in fine robes wanders the halls of some ancient library, accompanied by a large, slimy, black monster. Massive claws adorn the hands at the end of its long arms and rows of vicious looking teeth fill its mouth. The drow looks lost in thought as he enters another room, which contains a number of odd figures, all of whom look familiar...

The rest of the party sees a drow in fine robes with a monstrous bodyguard enter the room. He stops suddenly, "Ah... I didn't realize that I wasn't alone in here..."

Aug 10, 2018 4:02 pm
The drow looks surprised by Mai'ngor's title, but it passes quickly. "I am Vizeran Devir of Menzoberranzan, and this is Kleve," he says, motioning to the monster by his side, "He is quite harmless... unless you seek to do me harm, of course."

Sarith stands up straighter at the mention of the drow's name and then drops into a low bow, "Greetings, Master Devir, my name is Sarith. I was once a soldier in the armies of House Devir before their unfortunate fall."

Vizeran gives a slight nod of acknowledgement, but doesn't respond to Sarith's introduction, looking once more at Mai'ngor, "It's not often that I see those of the surface races here in the Underdark. What brings you here of all places?"
Aug 10, 2018 5:11 pm
Hunter shakes herself from her focus on the crystal, muttering something about asynchronous audio with visual. "Answers," she says, squinting her eyes shut to realign her thoughts. She looks at Vizeran studiously, then turns to Melpomene. "Is he the one? The one you saw?"

Sarith places a hand on Hunter's shoulder and, when she looks at him, he looks scared and shakes his head imperceptibly.
Aug 13, 2018 2:23 am
"Then our goals are aligned," says Hunter. "You do appear to have a measure of experience, unlike the one who started this mess. I apologize for casting you in such a light.

"I am Hunter. We are also here to figure out what is happening and discover some means of stopping it. We have danced too close and too often with the demon lords for my liking."

She takes Sarith's hand and gives it a squeeze. "I am afraid we do not know much save visions of the event that started it all, and a few glimpses of the demon lords in their purview."
Aug 13, 2018 7:09 am
Ma'ngor registers Sarith's discomfiture. The tikbalang has never fully trusted the drow warrior. But seeing a reaction like that Mai'ngor is even less inclined to trust this Vizeran Devir.

"What do you know of this 'mess' and what, exactly, do you mean when you say you mean to 'fix' it?"
Aug 17, 2018 11:46 pm
"I know that Gromph Baenre started the whole damned thing," Vizeran says, "Stupid fool... And I think I'm on the verge of figuring out how to reverse it. Perhaps once I've figured it out, I can find a way that you can assist in this. For beings of the lesser races, you seem competent enough." He says this last part without even flinching, as if he doesn't realize that it could be an insult (or just doesn't care).
Aug 18, 2018 1:32 am
Hunter appears as though trying to judo-throw Sarith over her shoulder towards Vizeran. Lacking the strength, she smooths her robes and looks for a seat. "This would seem the perfect learning opportunity," she says. "We would be honored to hear your theories, and we shall do our best to keep up."
Aug 20, 2018 7:27 pm
Vizeran raises an eyebrow, "Keep up?" he asks skeptically, "I should think that would be far outside of your meager talents. I think that I shall do my own research. Once I have the solution in mind, I will let you know if I think you can help."
Aug 20, 2018 7:35 pm
"But of course," Hunter says with a tinge of ice. She hands the crystal to Melpomene to give the tiefling an opportunity to focus upon it. Hunter sits and takes out an old piece of the Pudding King's throne and taps lightly upon it with a small hammer, turning the stone ever so slightly at each beat.

"Why are we here again? Seems like if they can find the solution themselves then they probably could take care of it themselves too."
Aug 21, 2018 8:35 am
Mai'ngor laughs heartily. Either the drow slights them on purpose, or his arrogance is so great that insult is offered unthinkingly. Either way, the proud tikbalang chieftains of old killed over far, far less. But after everything he's been through, to sully Sinag's blade with such a senseless death is distasteful to Mai'ngor. The tikbalang wipes a tear of mirth from his eye. This Devir is dirt. Mai'ngor's already dim view of the drow has not improved this day.
Aug 21, 2018 3:59 pm
Hunter says in response to Xeliss, "Probably. I should like to at least see that their solution works, so that when we return to the surface we can answer King Battlehammer assertively that the task is done." She continues tapping at the stone, occasionally sending a loud ring throughout the room before resuming a light inspection with her hammer.
Aug 22, 2018 10:51 pm
Melpomene takes the stone and focuses on it.
Aug 23, 2018 8:03 pm
As Melpomene takes the gem and focuses it, her vision fades away...

You see a kuo-toa swimming in the gloomy depths of a dark, subterranean lake, uncertain. It turns left and right, trying to find something, even as it's surrounded by a fanged creatures resembling manta rays. The kuo-toa smiles, its needle teeth gleaming even in the darkness. It has seen something. It understands a new secret, and its already unhinged mind plunges further into madness.

The kuo-toa curls in on itself, arms extended in worship. Then from the circle of rays, two tentacles emerge- followed by two howling baboon heads.

Upon describing this scene to the others, they will recognize the baboon-headed creature as Demogorgon.
Aug 25, 2018 11:31 pm
Hunter pauses her tap-tap of the stone as the story of the kuo-toa is told, silently willing the images from her head with a shudder.
Aug 26, 2018 4:33 pm
Mai'ngor shifts uneasily as the memory of groveling and eating dirt is refreshed in his mind.
Aug 30, 2018 8:44 pm
After another two days of research, you discover little more than you already knew. As you sit around and try to determine where else you can look, you hear footsteps down the hall just moments before Vizeran and his bodyguard enter the room. He appears to be quite irritated and begins speaking immediately.

"That fool Gromph brought the demon lords down upon us, with his demon queen pulling his strings all the while. He has given Lolth free reign in the Abyss. My own research leads me to believe Gromph used faerzress to achieve such a summoning, though I am sure he didn't intend this result. Imbecile!"

"I can save you months of research-time we clearly don't have. The information I found here has confirmed my theories, and I know how to banish the demon lords back to the Abyss. We can do this only if we work together, if you are willing and daring enough to directly challenge the demon lords... Or perhaps foolhardy is the better word."
Aug 31, 2018 1:33 am
"Oh, now he wants help," Hunter says quietly to herself. She rises from her seat and says, "Well, not like I had better plans. What is it?"
Aug 31, 2018 6:42 pm
Vizeran shakes his head, "We can't discuss it here... The walls here literally have ears, and echoes linger forever," he says, "I invite you all to my home to discuss this matter further; it is the only safe place to discuss such... delicate matters."
Aug 31, 2018 6:49 pm
Hunter gestures to the walls and says, "If your plan works, shouldn't there be a record in case this happens again? You've made it clear that you're surrounded by fools, so what will prevent another imbecile from doing the same thing as Gromph?"
Aug 31, 2018 8:23 pm
"This never will happen again," Vizeran replies, "Few are even powerful enough to attempt something like this and I don't believe it could be duplicated."
Aug 31, 2018 8:30 pm
"Often the foolish believe themselves capable of such things, yes?" Hunter says, then waves her hand dismissively. "No matter, I will accompany you to your home so that I can hear this plan.

"One thing; what is faerzress?"
Aug 31, 2018 8:46 pm
Vizeran nods, satisfied, before responding to your question, "Faerzress is the name given to the unique, and powerful, magical emanations that permeate the Underdark."
Aug 31, 2018 9:07 pm
Hunter will seek to understand faerzress and how she might tap into its power, but if Vizeran isn't forthcoming, she will still travel to his home.
Sep 1, 2018 11:12 pm
Melpomene likewise follows the dark elf.
Sep 2, 2018 4:09 am
Mai'ngor tosses his mane angrily. "Your home? Our previous experience of drow hospitality was singularly unpleasant." he says through grit teeth.
Sep 2, 2018 4:39 am
"Indeed," Hunter says with a toss of her hand. "Still, the drow are predictable in the fact that if they need some fool to take all the risk for their reward, they're inclined to keep their pets alive and well.

"Isn't that right, Vizeran? You'd rather have us hospitable so that we can accomplish your task?"
Sep 4, 2018 3:40 pm
Vizeran nods, "You see it now," he says, "Maybe you're smarter than I thought. I have no use for you all dead."

With your apparent agreement, he nods, "Let us leave immediately. Time is of the essence," he says, sweeping out of the chamber with his bodyguard a step behind.

Hours later, you find yourselves back in the lightless caverns of the Underdark, following the powerful mage as he leads the way to his home. It takes upwards of two weeks before you reach a blank stone wall and he stops, "My home is just ahead," he says, "I expect that you'll be on your best behavior?"
Sep 4, 2018 4:19 pm
Hunter says, "Of course. I admit we've been ignoring each other for the past two weeks, but I give you our assurance that we are nothing if not best-behaved.

"A shame you missed the drinking game, though."
Sep 4, 2018 10:31 pm
Xeliss looks for any small trinkets of interest she can take while they are spoken to. For now, she merely examines the items.

Nodding, Vizeran taps the wall with a ring on his finger. The wall glows briefly before fading away to reveal a narrow passageway, "Your... retainers and mounts will have to camp here, I'm afraid," he says, turning and entering the tunnel without waiting for a response.
Sep 7, 2018 8:37 pm
Mai'ngor tosses his mane irritably. The tikbalang still feels coming here was a horrible mistake, but wasn't about to abandon his friends.
Sep 7, 2018 8:52 pm
Hunter turns to pass along the condition before she follows Vizeran into the tunnel.
Sep 11, 2018 6:03 pm
"Elayna, would you prefer to stay with the soldiers, or come with us?" Hunter thinks to ask prior to entering the abode.
Sep 11, 2018 7:02 pm
Elayna looks between the narrow tunnel and the soldiers for a few moments and then back to Hunter, taking a deep breath and re-adjusting her equipment, "I think I'll go with you," she says, "I feel safest that way."
OOC:
Prior to this, Elayna would have had NO training with weapons, magic, stealth, etc. Would any of you have taken the opportunity to work with her on improving in any one of those areas?
The passage behind the secret door is narrow enough that you need to move through it single file, occasionally turning sideways to squeeze. It takes about an hour to navigate its pitch-black darkness, and the journey is filled with a constant echo of distant sounds. The passage then widens, opening out into a cavern whose far walls and ceiling are out of sight in the darkness. Bits of quartz and mica en the stone glimmer as they catch the light, showing a footpath worn into the stone floor. At the end of that path, a vast, dark shape rises-an enormous stalagmite carved into a bleak, black tower.

Past the heavy iron door that is the tower's only visible entrance, a short tunnel extends through five feet of solid rock into a cool, dark chamber. As you enter, a floating orb of pale violet light brightens before you, revealing an opening in the vaulted ceiling and a spiral stone staircase with no railing, climbing up into darkness.

Around the stairs, the light reveals a circular audience chamber with cold, unlit lanterns hanging from brackets set into the stone wall, heavy carpets covering the smooth stone door, and a throne-like stone chair on a raised dais to the left of the entrance.

The ball of violet light floats to a stop beneath the center of the open shaft, beyond the foot of the stairs. It then hovers there as if waiting for you.

Vizeran leads the way around the open shaft to the other side of the audience chamber taking a seat in a high-backed chair and beckoning you all to take a seat. He snaps his finger and the lanterns are suddenly lit with an odd purple-ish flame and the tables are suddenly set with a feast. Trays of dried mushrooms, smoked rothe meat, and goblets of spicy liquor fill the tables.

Vizeran takes a cup of the liquor and immediately takes a drink, looking in your direction as if to say "It's not poisoned".

OOC:
Feeling a certain kinship, Hunter will teach Elayna about magic.
Hunter takes the proffered goblet and gives it a sniff to assess its alcohol content. She takes a sip and compares it to the ale of dwarven kings, to her satisfaction. "Our thanks for your hospitality."
Sep 12, 2018 12:14 pm
After much hesitation, Mai'ngor partakes just enough to not offer too much insult.
Sep 12, 2018 2:55 pm
The food and drink offered is not quite as good as that which you had in Bruenor's halls, but is much better than anything you've had since you left Gauntlgrym. Vizeran waits until you've all served yourselves before speaking.

"The only one of my kind who could ever match me in the Art is Gromph Baenre. I think we knew from the moment we met that we were destined to be rivals. But where I sought only to master the Art, Gromph was also an astute political manipulator. No more devout than I in the service of the Spider Queen, he arranged for my disgrace and exile. Deprived of my considerable skills, my house fell to our rival, House Do'Urden. Gromph became the Archmage of Menzoberranzan under the auspices of his own house, the First House of the Ruling Council."

"Gromph and I only ever had two things in common: our passion for the Art, and our hatred of the manner in which our fellow mages suffer at the hands of the matron mothers and mistresses of the drow. Gromph has always hungered for power, and not even becoming Archmage of Menzoberranzan was enough to satisfy him."

"From this tower of exile, I kept watch on Gromph's activities. This was no easy task given his suspicious and circumspect nature. Nonetheless, my observations revealed that he was crafting a unique ritual-one that somehow drew on the energy of faerzress to channel incalculable arcane power. When Gromph performed this ritual, the walls between the planes shuddered. Then, as you have by now realized, the demon lords were wrenched from their layers of the Abyss and cast about here in the Underdark. What we all witnessed in Gravenhollow confirms this."
Sep 12, 2018 4:10 pm
Hunter listens patiently, intuiting that when this haughty dark elf goes on a monologue, it is best to let him finish.
Sep 13, 2018 4:48 pm
After allowing you all a moment to digest the information, Vizeran continues:

"Demons are creatures ruled by madness and hatred, even the greatest and most powerful of them. They war ceaselessly upon each other in the Abyss, and have already begun to do so here. We can play them against each other, and then deal with the weakened victors."

"I believe I have the ability to devise and cast a ritual, similar to Gromph's but nowhere near as dangerous or foolish, that will draw the most powerful demon lords together to the site of the original summoning. Once they are brought together, they will try to destroy each other."

"But though the demon lords might destroy each other's physical manifestations here in our world, their essence cannot be extinguished. They will thus be cast back into the Abyss, as effectively as if they had been banished."

"The ritual needs certain components to produce the talisman that will draw the demons. Then a rite to empower and activate it. Then blood and battle such as this world has never seen. Any survivors among the demon lords will be sorely weakened, and should be far easier to destroy."

"All I need are the necessary ingredients," Vizeran says, "and, ideally, a look at Gromph's grimoires and notes from his sanctum."

While the drow archmage watches you mull over his plan, a thin smile curls one corner of his mouth.
Sep 13, 2018 5:53 pm
Hunter nods. "Straightforward enough, I suppose," she says. "I take it as expected that these ingredients are rare and potentially lethal to acquire, if my experience with powerful arcane rituals is any indication. So it need not be spoken that we shall risk everything to retrieve these items, while you remain safely here to benefit from our findings, and Gromph's research. We are your sacrificial pawns, yes?"

She stands. "Very well. What ingredients do you need?"
Sep 14, 2018 8:50 pm
Vizeran smiles, "Excellent! I think you're beginning to understand how this works," he says, pulling out a piece of folded parchment and sliding it across the desk to Hunter.
[ +- ] Ingredients
Sep 14, 2018 11:40 pm
Melpomene peers at the list over Hunter's shoulder and murmurs, "Oh my."
Sep 15, 2018 4:56 am
Hunter's eyes flit over the parchment, and she murmurs back to Melpomene, "Didn't think it'd be this rare."
Sep 15, 2018 3:07 pm
Vizeran raises an eyebrow, "Do you think I'd set you on this task without knowing where to find the ingredients that you'll need? I'm not so foolish as to trust you all to be able to find them on your own, as resourceful as you may be for one of the lesser races." The statement, at face value, sounds like an insult, but you get the idea that it's a sort of off-handed compliment.

"Now, I'd suggest that you begin at the Wormwrithings," he says as he snaps his fingers. After a moment, you see a rolled piece of parchment float through the air toward him. He takes it and unrolls it on a clear section of one of the tables, revealing a very confusing map of criss-crossing tunnels. He points to one point, "This is my tower," he says, beginning to trace a path across the map before stopping at an especially wide tunnel, "These are the Wormwrithings, a nest of purple worms. I imagine you can find eggs somewhere within. There is also a place call the Vast Oblivium just beyond. Once you've retrieved the egg, I will send further instructions on how to find it. That is where you'll find a beholder named Karazikar."
Sep 15, 2018 5:44 pm
"May I borrow this?" Hunter asks, referring to the map. Aside from the request, she has no other questions and is impatient to be out of the drow's presence.
Sep 16, 2018 4:09 pm
"A look at Gromph's grimoires and notes from his sanctum? Even if we were certain this isn't a scheme to grow your own power - and I assure you, I am not convinced - this demon battle you aim to orchestrate will surely result in untold collateral damage."
Sep 18, 2018 11:52 pm
Xeliss takes small sips from her goblet as if expecting poison to manifest within her liquor at any moment.
Sep 19, 2018 1:16 pm
To Hunter's question, Vizeran nods, "Yes, feel free. It's a copy that I had made for you," he says.

The drow listens to Mai'ngor and then smiles, "This will undoubtedly result in my power growing. I also won't refute that there will likely be massive collateral damage, but what do you care?" he asks, "The Underdark is far from your home and I doubt you have any love for my kind to be so concerned."

Naatkinson sent a note to jabes.plays.rpg
Xeliss sips at the liquor and finds that it's very smooth. It is very strong, but not overpowering, and she can feel the tenseness in her muscles slipping away as her body relaxes for the first time in a long time.

Sarith sits at the back of the group, silently eating and drinking. It appears to those of you who've spent a lot of time with him that he is trying to avoid bringing notice to himself.

Elayna barely seems to notice the presence of the drow now that there's good food in front of you all. She pays only half-attention through the whole conversation, focused instead on looking around and sampling the foods.
Sep 19, 2018 5:06 pm
Hunter nods. She gives the map a quick glance before furling it up and putting it into her bag. She takes the list of ingredients and studies it again. "You mentioned further instructions once we've recovered the egg of a purple worm," she says. "Aside from our return to your tower each time we retrieve an ingredient, is there an alternative form of communication at your disposal?"
Sep 19, 2018 5:23 pm
"I'll be watching from here and will contact you magically once you've gotten the egg," he replies simply.
Sep 19, 2018 5:33 pm
Hunter nods, satisfied. "To the Wormwrithings, then."
Sep 20, 2018 1:05 pm
As you turn to leave, Vizeran clears his throat, "There is one more thing that I have for you before you leave," he says, and a wooden chest floats over from the corner. Opening it, he pulls out some cloaks and amulets and hands them to you.
OOC:
The cloak is a drow Piwafwi (Cloak of Elvenkind) and the amulet acts as a one-time use "Protection From Fiends" spell
Sep 20, 2018 4:50 pm
Hunter accepts the items with her thanks, and wraps the cloak over her robes. Briefly considering the question of whether these are gifts, or loaned items, she decides she'd rather not broach the subject.
Sep 20, 2018 11:41 pm
Melpomene accepts hers with a small curtsy.
Sep 23, 2018 7:22 am
Suspiciously, Mai'ngor inspects the items handed him. The tikbalang is convinced they are enchanted with scrying magics - or worse, they could be meant to torment the wearer to a slow death, or even turn them into puppets for the accursed drow!
Sep 24, 2018 1:47 pm
As the others put their cloaks and amulets on, Mai'ngor doesn't see that they suffer any ill effects, at least not immediately.

Vizeran gives you enough supplies for the road to and from the Wormwrithings and sets you on your way. The trip starts off pretty smoothly as you follow the path outlined on Vizeran's map, which is amazingly accurate.

About halfway through the trip a foul stench and a cacophony of faint, hissing vorces rises from ahead. The tunnel plunges sharply downward into a vast, open cavern dimly lit by luminous fungi and bisected by an underground stream. Tall reptilian humanoids stand on either side of the stream, waving makeshift weapons and howling threats at each other in a hissing language.

The group of creatures closest to you has a captive lashed between two stalagmites atop a low rise in the cavern floor. That floor is some twenty feet below you, down a steep but navigable tunnel whose walls are piled high with rubble. The creatures are preoccupied with their conflict and haven't noticed you yet.
Sep 24, 2018 4:27 pm
Hunter wraps a part of her shawl across her nose and mouth, trying to ward away the smell. "Who's the prisoner?" she asks, trying to make out the creature tied up below.

Looking over the troglodyte forces you can estimate:

Half a dozen atop the rise on the left, including the prisoner (a troglodyte)
Two dozen on the south side of the bank of the stream
A dozen on the north side of the bank

You also find, hidden behind some rubble on your right, a narrow tunnel leading east.

"Should it surprise me that they fight each other?" says Hunter, before she looks to the narrow tunnel. "Let's see if we can avoid this."
Sep 27, 2018 6:26 pm
"Agreed." Mai'ngor prepares to move off.
Sep 27, 2018 6:39 pm
The narrow tunnel is a tight fit, but you are able to make your way through it slowly. Reaching the other side, Mai'ngor peeks out and sees a single troglodyte on guard in the chamber, standing with his back to you in front of a pit on the east side of the room. He doesn't appear to have noticed you up to this point. Just left of where you entered, there are four closed chests.

There are three exits from the chamber; one to the northwest, one to the northeast, and another to the southeast.

Oct 2, 2018 9:18 pm
"What's this?" Mai'ngor murmurs. "Were those brutes saving you for their next meal?" The tikbalang waves his companions over as he uncoils a rope to haul the prisoners out.
