Chapter 1: Into the Mists

To a party of seasoned adventurers such as yourselves, what you see is but another dull tavern in another dull town in some nameless province. It is but another span of time between the challenges of true adventuring.

Outside the tavern, a fog lies over the town this evening. The damp, cobbled pavement glistens as the lights of street lanterns dance across the slick stones. The fog chills the bones and shivers the soul of anyone outside .

Yet inside these tavern walls the food is hearty, and the ale is warm and frothy. A fire blazes in the hearth, and the tavern is alive with the tumbling voices of country folk.

Suddenly, the tavern door swings open, and a hush falls over the room. Framed by the lamp-lit fog, a form strides through the doorway. His heavy, booted footfalls and the jingle of his coins shatter the silence. His brightly colored clothes are draped in loose folds about him, and his hat hangs askew, hiding his eyes in shadows.

Without hesitation, he walks up to your table and stands proudly in a wide stance with folded arms. In an accented voice he says, "I have been sent to you. to deliver this message. If you be creatures of honor, you will come to my master's aid at first light. It is not advisable to travel the Svalich Woods at night!"

He pulls from his tunic a sealed letter, addressed to all of you in beautiful flowing script. He drops the letter on the table. "Take the west road from here some five hours march down through the Svalich Woods. There you will find my master in Barovia."

Amid the silent stares of the patronage, the gypsy strides to the bar and says to the wary barkeep, "Fill the glasses, one and all. Their throats are obviously parched." He drops a purse heavy with gold on the bar. With that, he leaves.

The babble of tavern voices resumes, although some what subdued. The letter is lying before you. The seal is in the shape of a crest you don't recognize.

As the messenger approaches the table Greymond slams down a vial of liquid onto the table assuming everyone jumped but not really giving any attention to anyone but the vial, Oh relax, he pats the vials on his chest hanging from his beard these are the volatile ones... . He finishes as the man reaches the table and he stops talking and any motion. Greymond can oddly be seen sitting as tall as anyone else in the tavern but is pretty evident that he's sitting on his backpack to make up height. Once the man finishes talking he takes the letter, passing it to whoever is on his left, still clutching the vial. Seems someone is in need of assistance. Odd looking seal though, nothing I've ever seen that I can recall. After giving up the letter he takes a swig of ale.
Dec 30, 2017 6:25 pm
Ryn watched the strange man walk out of the tavern and he took another drink from his wine. Grabbing the letter from Greymond, he examined the letter and seal. "Well that was a short introduction, any ideas who is hiring us or what we are doing? It says a great evil but that could be almost anything. Baroth did you get any read on the man?" Ryn turned and handed the letter over to one of his other companions while he wracked his brain trying to recognize the crest or any information about the town of Barovia.

Ryn recognizes the name Barovia as a town spoken of in books, citing it as a battlesite and fishing town, but fails to recall any information on the crest or anybody by the name Indirovich. The town is not marked on your map.
Dec 30, 2017 8:02 pm
Baroth takes the letter from Ryn. After he was done watching and observing the name that had dropped off the letter. He looks over the letter and see that there is evil and he speaks up. "If there is evil to vanquish, then I say that we leave at first light."

Baroth observes that the man had a bouncy, rhythmic gait, articulate, jovial voice, and bright-colored clothing characteristic of a minstrel as he strutted about the stone floor of the Spinning Wheel Tavern, a highly unusual sight. Everyone seemed to pay him attention from the moment he walked in the door to the moment he left.

The bartender lifts the bag of money off the counter and begins sending wenches around to fill glasses as per the man's request.
Dec 31, 2017 3:46 am
An interesting looking fella' to be sure. Hard to turn down an offer like that. "All the wealth available?" He gladly accepts the refill on his ale and takes a sip before repeating "Barovia" sounds like a rich sylvany type of place. I'm down for going and killing whatever needs killin'. Few more pints and then a well nights rest sounds astounding.
Dec 31, 2017 7:57 am
I'm with Baroth. Let's head at first light.
Dec 31, 2017 3:44 pm
With the letter in his hand and his cup in the other, he walks over to the bar keep. He sets his cup down and waits for a refill. As the bartender refills his cup with ale he shows him the seal. "Do you know anything about the place Barovia? Or about the man Kolyan Indirovich?
Dec 31, 2017 3:50 pm
I've heard the Vistani talk about Barovia but nothing more. Those gypsies know more than they should, I tell you.
Dec 31, 2017 8:48 pm
"Where can I find these Vistani?"
Dec 31, 2017 9:15 pm
Ryn sat at the table sipping his wine thinking over the limited information. Swirling the remaining wine in his goblet, he downs it and sets it down on the table in front of him. "I don't usually like making agreements without more information, but I am for rooting out evil. Plus getting paid for it is a nice change. If everybody is in agreement I'm all for heading out in the morning."
Dec 31, 2017 9:57 pm
I agree, it really isn't much to go on is it? Looks like our friend is gleaning some information from our letter, lets go see what he's found out. He stands up and snatches his tankard off the table and begins his journey to the bar.
Dec 31, 2017 10:08 pm
Oh, I assumed you knew them as one just delivered your mail. They travel around, mostly near the Svalich woods, and trade with us occasionally. I didn't think they were in town but the fellow that just left proved otherwise.
Jan 1, 2018 3:22 am
"Thank you sir. You have been a great help." Baroth takes his full cup of ale back to the table as Graymond is climbing down from his chair. Baroth walks over and sits down, taking a sip of his drink. "I am not sure if I got any information that is useful. Apparently there is a group of gypsies that might know more about the town. We can see them on our way out."
Jan 2, 2018 4:50 pm
As Greymond had hoped down he noticed the paladin on his way back, but instead of taking the trouble of getting in his seat he just stands leaning against it taking a drink.

Gepsies? Hope we can trust 'em. He followed this up with a laugh. Maybe we can take some ale with us, if they lie to us, at the very least we'll enjoy ourselves while they do it. He paused for a moment allowing the silence to settle for a moment before bursting into laughter.
Jan 2, 2018 5:29 pm
And so it was. You spent a night in the inn and went out in search of the gypsies at first light. Sure enough, there was a conspicuously colorful wagon with people buzzing all around it, packing tents and other supplies into the it. They seem mostly finished. Among them, you see the man who delivered your letter.

Ryn let out a little chuckle, "Thank you for that by the way, after reading the letter we had some few questions about the letter and nobody in the bar could shed any light on the subject. For instance, what can you tell us about the land of Barovia and the Burgermaster, the man who is hiring us? What is this evil that has invaded the area? The man smiles. It is perfectly alright, I give freely to all I meet, but as for your questions, I have no answers myself. The Barovians are quite strange in their reclusiveness and the Burgomaster only hired me to carry the letter because I was leaving anyway. The man says. As for the land, there is not much to tell. Wolf-infested forests and cold, dreary weather are what compose it. We go because the locals are in deathly need of light and color. This and the Burgomaster allows us to put a more permanent residence on his land for my people.
Jan 3, 2018 6:10 pm
Greymond steps out from behind Ryn. What of the Burgomaster mate? Is he wealthy? He gives a sly grin. The rest.. sounds miserable. He thumbs a vial slung from his beard. But if there's evil to be staunched then point the way.
Jan 3, 2018 6:26 pm
Very wealthy. He is much like a Baron in the way he leads the town. The evil, though, I haven't seen. Perhaps it is the wolves that have become far more vicious agianst the Barovians that has him concerned of evil. Regardless,
we can do more than point your way. You may accompany us on our way back, if you wish.
He opens his arms in a welcoming gesture.

What follows is a dreary but peaceful ride. Black pools of water stand like dark mirrors in and around the muddy roadway. Giant trees loom on both sides of the road, their branches clawing at the mist.

The fog spills out of the forest to swallow up the road behind you. Ahead, jutting from the impenetrable woods on both sides of the road, are high stone buttresses looming gray in the fog. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet. They greet you only with silence. Welcome to Barovia, companions. Arrigal says. The gates operate by themselves, allowing for the wagons to pass.and for the gate close behind them.

Towering trees, whose tops are lost in heavy gray mist, block out all but a death-gray light. The tree trunks are unnaturally close to one another, and the woods have the silence of a forgotten grave, yet exude the feeling of an unvoiced scream. The trees soon open to a plain with a river to your left. This river flows as clear as a blue winter sky through the valley.

Tall shapes loom out of the dense fog that surrounds everything. The muddy ground underfoot gives way to slick, wet cobblestones. The tall shapes become recognizable as village dwellings. The windows of each house stare out from pools of blackness. No sound cuts the silence except for mournful sobbing that echoes through the streets from a distance. This is where we stop. He says, his wagons stopped just outside the town Come visit us at our encampment some hours away. He points beyond the village Turn north at the crossroads if you wish to find us. Perhaps we could read your fortune then.

You are dropped off where the road turns from dirt to cobblestone as the Vistani wagons carry on through the village at brisk pace.

The boy is shedding bitter tears and holding close a stuffed doll. You also notice rats strutting around proudly in the absence of people in the street. There is a light on in the building of on the corner of an intersection far up the street.

Wil: Wil easily scales the building and stealthily clings to a rooftop.

Ryn: From where Ryn is standing, he doesn't see anything that looks special beyond the manor house the children are in front of. Even that doesn't seem to be the place for a mayor to be.
Jan 5, 2018 12:04 am
Wil gets a look at the children from behind as well as the manor house from the side. The house, unfortunately, seems too bare and tall to jump on top of from the other buildings.

Baroth walks up to the children and calls for their attention. Hi there. I mean you no harm. Where are your parents? Why is he so sad? Baroth motions to the little boy. He is adressing his questions to the older girl. Why is this place so quite and the streets so empty? It is mid day and it looks as tho it is night out here. Baroth has a look of concern on his face.
Jan 5, 2018 1:26 am
After shushing the boy, the girl turns to Baroth and says, There’s a monster in our house! She then points to a tall brick row house that has seen better days. Its windows are dark. It has a gated portico on the ground floor, and the rusty gate is slightly ajar. The houses on either side are abandoned, their windows and doors boarded up.
Jan 5, 2018 2:51 am
As they passed through the gate Greymond goes out of his way as they pass through to place a hand on one of the statues heads and drag his fingers across in a strange sort of respect.

As they traveled on and the caravan left. Not sure, maybe they just wanted to rest at their campsite. It does seem a little ominous though doesn't it?

What does this monster look like? Baroth says as he get ready to go inside the house. Looking between the kids and the open door of the house. where are your parents?
Jan 5, 2018 3:46 am
I don't know what it looks like but it makes loud noises from the basement. Our parents keep it in but they went away. The girl says, seeming exhausted and broken-hearted I'm Rose and this is Thorn. The young boy starts a sentence that devolves into more sobbing. Walter.... The girl explains. Our baby brother is in there! Please make the monster go away.
Jan 5, 2018 5:25 am
Greymond nervously approaches the children behind Baroth and listens to the exchange. Your parents keep a monster locked in the basement? That doesn't seem very safe now does it? Where have they gone? Greymond walks halfway between the kids and the house leaving the safety of Baroth's legs.

He draws his shortsword.
Jan 5, 2018 4:48 pm
Ryn bent down towards the children to ask a question... "How long have your parents been gone? What kind of noises does the monster make?" Ryn stands and turns to Baroth, " If you are thinking of going in, we might want to find some sort of authority here first. We don't know the rules or customs here and I'm not sure I'm fully comfortable going into a strange house because of a child's fantasy of monsters stored in the basement."
Jan 5, 2018 5:03 pm
They've been gone a long time. The girl says to Ryn. It makes howls. Like the wolves but worse! Please, help us! Help our baby brother!

I think you're using perception in the role that passive perception fills. If I need a perception check for you to look for something, I will ask. In the times between, I will refer to your passive perception to tell you hidden things you pick up on while idly walking around. Stealth checks, however, you can do as much as you like but I was saying it's not completely necessary because, as long as you do very little but sneaking around, it is still valid for a bit.
The oaken doors open to a foyer. Hanging on the wall is a shield emblazoned by a coat of arms, flanked by framed portraits of stony-faced aristocrats. Mahogany-framed doors set with panes of stained glass are on the opposite side of the foyer.

"Thank you little ones for the information, we will see to your brother." Ryn heads to the door waving Baroth up to the front door, out of ear shot of the children he discusses his concerns. "We need to check on the well being of their brother. The children look to have spent the last several nights outside, on their own. Ryn's dagger shines in the absence of light in the foyer. As you all advance through the mahogany doors, you observe that it opens up into a main hall that spans the width of the house. It has a black marble fireplace at one end and a sweeping red marble staircase at the other. There are several doors in the hall, one very close on the same wall as the doorway you had come though and four along the opposite wall.

At first, Baroth is startled to see humanoid figures lined against the walls of this grand hall but is relieved to see that they are only suits of armor, each clutching a spear and bearing a visor shaped like a wolf's head. Unlit oil lamps line the room. Above the mantlepiece of another marble fireplace, there hangs a picture of a family: a mother, a father, a swaddled baby in the father's arms, and the children you met outside, Rose and Thorn. The paneling that lines the room depict youths dancing.

There is another marble staircase leading up to the third floor. A cold draft eliminates from the opening. There is a door right next to you as well as two sets of double doors on either side, suits of armor on either side of each.

As Greymond motioned throwing the strange vial, Ryn quickly stepped to the side "Oh no but of course, feel free to move in front of me whenever you get the urge to throw one of your special vials. I’ll be fine back here don’t worry about me. Of course if you ever need a hand just let me know." Ryn gives the dwarf a wink as he quickly casts mage hand, willing the spectral hand to mime a dropping motion. Ryn starts to watch the back of the group, watching to make sure nothing is trying to sneak up from behind.

Seeing the third floor makes you reflect on how pristine the other two floors were; the floors were recently polished, the suits of armor gleamed by the light of Baroth's shield, there were no dust or cobwebs to be found. The third floor seems to you to be completely abandoned and decrepid, cobwebs and dust choking the hallways and hanging off of every wall. A web-covered suit of armor stares at you from the opposite wall as you reach the top of the stairs. There are two doors to the left, on both sides of a corner. There is also a visible set of double doors a ways to the right.
OOC:
Anybody can give me a perception check.

OOC:
Baroth's perception stinks I will leave that to you.

OOC:
Ryn seems to have had the luck lol. Also, let me know if I'm not rolling something properly or if you'd rather prompt rolls. I'm still new to the forum pbp setting. Still trying to figure it out.
As they reached the third floor Greymond looked at the floor trying to discern if there had been any recent foot traffic in the hall.

Investigation Check - (1D20+4)

(19) + 4 = 23

Jan 7, 2018 5:28 am
Dust cakes the floor and it's not hard to discern that nobody seems to have been through here in a while.
OOC:
Nah, as long as you aren't incorrect about a roll's purpose, you can roll whatever you like, whenever you like. I'll trust you guys with that. The only difficulty I have is people making redundant or unnecessary rolls, mainly in stealth, athletics, and perception. I will say it's redundant when somebody makes a check for the same continuous thing twice in a row, like a stealth checks for passing small areas. Also there are a lot of things you can do and notice without having to roll at all, such as climbing an easy surface or hearing a thief sneaking up to you in the gloom.

And by anybody, I meant that you all could if you wanted to.
Jan 7, 2018 5:35 am
The complete silence and lack of sound is a bit unnerving for Ryn, he desperately looks around, and listens to spot any clues that might lead them into finding a healthy child.

Jan 7, 2018 5:44 am
OOC:
Ryn really is having all the luck.
Looking around desperately, surveying every minute detail of the cramped balcony, Ryn spots a seam in one of the wall panels to the left and a subtle trail marking a draft blowing through. This suggests that there is an opening behind the panel, well hidden and difficult to spot.
Jan 7, 2018 12:59 pm
Spotting the gap, Ryn quickly calls over his Halfling friend to check it out. He casts mage hand to point it out. "Will, look there’s a gap for some kind of opening. Can you check it out. I’m feeling there’s something else going on with this level."
OOC:
what can I say, I guess being a celestial blessed warlock has some advantages on this site. I’m playing in a game off site and all I’m rolling are 2’s and 3’s.
Jan 7, 2018 3:27 pm
Greymond reaches his arms out to either side and stops in his tracks. Fella's. I've suddenly got a bad feeling about this. Look at the floor, no one has been up here in ages. How could a child possibly survive? He thumbs the cap of the vial he's already holding and reaches for another out of comfort.
Jan 7, 2018 9:37 pm
Ryn, did you notice a lever or something to open this panel?
OOC:
Should I roll to investigate for traps or for a lever to open the panel, or did Ryn’s perception check give us that info?
Jan 7, 2018 9:48 pm
OOC:
Ryn's perception check gave all the information necessary. It looks to Ryn that you could just pull the panel off of the wall.

Edit: And his perception along with the dwarf's investigation would have most likely picked up any detectable traps.

Baroth walks past the suit of armor and pulls the panel off the wall, with no effort, to reveal a set of stairs going upwards. Before he can pass off this information, the grinding and clanking of metal pierces the silence of the house. The suit of armor, previously still, has come alive and lurches toward Baroth with unnatural resolve.
OOC:
Roll initiative. Combat will work the regular way so try to keep track of when it's your turn to avoid holding the game up.

Note: I feel a bit bad about your perception and investigation checks because you really did all you could in avoiding hazard and they were ineffective in the animated armor's case so, because you all were already being so alert, I won't give the armor a surprise round.

Insight for intent and demeanor, perception for pieces of previously unnoticed physical information, investigation for extrapolating things from already available evidence, and arcana if you want to see if you know about the nature of this armor. I agree with Baroth. Something is very much not right. If there were a small human child in here, you'd think there would be footprints from caring for it. This level hasn't been traversed by anyone in some time. He moves to further look over the armor they fought. Go ahead Wil. Just try not to take any undo risks?

There is a door near to you on the north wall that has a lock fastening it to the frame. There are two other doors to the west on either side of a dead end hall and another on the south wall.
Jan 10, 2018 5:36 pm
Baroth: Facing the double doors, Baroth sees nothing amiss. However, he does notice a rhythmic creaking ruminating from beyond the wall to his right, the structure of the house suggesting that, whatever it is, it can be accessed through the doors he's facing.
Jan 10, 2018 6:10 pm
Baroth looks at Greymond and whispers. Stay here and wait for Will. Baroth then looks to Ryn and gives him a wave to follow him. Baroth then starts to, as quietly as he can, walk over to the double doors.

Jan 10, 2018 11:02 pm
The double doors to this room have dusty panes of stained glass set into them. Designs in the glass resemble windmills. The dusty, cobweb-filled bedroom has burgundy drapes covering the windows. Furnishings include a four-poster bed with embroidered curtains and tattered gossamer veils, a matching pair of empty wardrobes, a vanity with a wood-framed mirror and jewelry box, and a padded chair. A rotting tiger-skin rug lies on the floor in front of the fireplace, which has a dust-covered portrait of the mother and father figures you saw in the portrait in the second floor hall hanging above it. A door facing the foot of the bed has a full-length mirror mounted on it. Cold air wafts from around a corner to your right, where the noise is now plain and clear.

Okay well never mind. Baroth steps out to talk to will. What did you find? I thought I heard something in there.

Just having a look around. Heard noises coming from the other side of the door they say. Figure we'd check it out. The hairs on his arm standing on end in eerie silence.
Jan 11, 2018 11:22 pm
This room contains a bricked-up window flanked by two dusty, wood-framed beds sized for children. Closer to the door is a toy chest with windmills painted on its sides and a dollhouse that’s a perfect replica of the dreary edifice in which you stand. These furnishings are draped in cobwebs. Lying in the middle of the floor are two small skeletons wearing tattered but familiar clothing. The smaller of the two cradles a stuffed doll that you also recognize.
Jan 12, 2018 1:02 am
Baroth steps into the room. What is going on here? Do those bodies look a lot like the kids we met outside to you? Baroth steps out of the room. He brushes some of the scales on his head. But if those kids where undead I would have sensed it.
Jan 12, 2018 1:53 am
"Were they spirits? I imagine if they were undead then they probably would have taken their skeletons with them." Casting mage hand, he picks up the familiar doll, "and I doubt there would be a duplicate doll. Do we think that these are evil children? Cursed? or is something else at play... The mage hand gently puts down the doll back into the skeletons arms and pulls the blankets off the bed, covering the two children's skeletons. "It's a shame their bodies are laying out in the open, we must look for some clues, but I wish that we had the time to give them a proper burial."

Inspecting the dollhouse, in addition to the normal selection of rooms throughout the house, you notice a couple of secret doors. Ones in the 3rd floor suite and 3rd floor hallway leading to the same stairway to the attic, one in the library behind a bookshelf leading to a secret room, and one in the attic storage area leading to a spiral staircase that goes past the lower three floors and into the bottom of the dollhouse.
[ +- ] The House
While you he is inspected the dollhouse, Wil feels a cold wind pass through him. Moments later, a pair of small translosent figures appear beside Wil. A voice you recognize lets out a chastising call Stop messing with it! It's ours! Who are you!? Looking up, Wil meets the stern eyes of a young girl and behind her is a younger boy, no longer clutching his doll.
Jan 12, 2018 7:33 am
I'm sorry, little girl. I promise I wasn't trying to do anything. It is a very nice dollhouse.

I am a bit confused. How did you die?
Jan 12, 2018 1:30 pm
Her face softens at Wil's assurances. We got too hungry. Our parents put us up here to protect us from the monster in the basement. My name is Rose and this is Thorn.
Jan 12, 2018 1:58 pm
Looking at the girl, Wil points to the dollhouse and asks, When I was looking at your dollhouse, I noticed a couple secret doors that I thought were really cool. Can you point out to me any secrets I missed?
Jan 12, 2018 2:08 pm
The girl shows you the library one, explaining that she's never been in there, and shows the spiral staircase door in the attic, saying that that is the way to the basement.

You're really nice. Thorn says.

Alright. I was going with looking for like stab wounds or something that would've be pretty straight forward. I'll use medicine next time. Would you prefer I roll again? There's no modifier for me on medicine.
Greymond jumps at the startling sound of a new but familiar voice but remains silent, standing over their bodies with an apparent frown.
Jan 12, 2018 3:10 pm
There are no stab wounds, Graymond thinks, but, given that they are skeletons, its rather hard to tell.
Jan 12, 2018 4:30 pm
Baroth walks over to the kids and takes a knee right next to them, so he is looking at them at eye level. Hey. What happened to your baby sibling? I know you two got hungry but how can I help you? Baroth voice is as low and sweet as possible for a dragonborn.
Jan 12, 2018 4:43 pm
Baby? Our nursemaid had a baby and we had a painting made with him but we haven't seen the baby or our maid after that. We were put up here right after. She says, sounding like she's having trouble remembering. He might be in the nursery.
Jan 12, 2018 5:05 pm
Can you point to which room in the dollhouse is the nursery?
Jan 12, 2018 5:53 pm
She points to a room with a crib connected to a suite on the third floor. She says that the suite is where the nursemaid slept.

OOC:
The nursemaid's suite is on the left and the nursery is the square room above it, next to the balcony.
But you're not going to leave us here, are you? The girl asks.
Jan 12, 2018 6:01 pm

Ryn: You gauge that Rose doesn't mean to be hostile but also doesn't trust the party not to leave her behind. Thorn seems to only be following her sister's lead and doesn't mean anything by possessing Baroth.

You also try to recall religious knowledge on ghosts but it is scarce beyond the general knowledge that they are the spirits of dead people with a purpose to finish. You know possession warrants them some control over the subject but you don't know to what extent.
Jan 12, 2018 10:06 pm
Ryn bends down to Rose, "Rose, what do you want done? If you tell me I will take you I promise."
Jan 12, 2018 10:15 pm
I want to get out! I've tried to get out and I can't! I don't know how! I don't want to be here anymore! Her rage-filled tirade shifts into a desperate cry. Other people have said that before! They said it and now they're gone!
Jan 12, 2018 10:37 pm
You can come with us! Is that the only way you can accompany us? He turns towards his companions Perhaps taking care of this monster will shed some light on the subject? He kneels down next to the two children's remains and takes a moment, giving the laid to rest some much needed respect and time he figures. You say your parents left you up here after the monster in the basement? Did they say where they were going? Or what they were going to do?
Jan 12, 2018 10:39 pm
No. Rose says, tears in her eyes They didn't.
Rose looks to Ryn. It's the only way I want to come with you. That way you can't leave me behind.
Jan 12, 2018 10:44 pm
Wil gasps for air for a minute or so, and then asks the girl, That wasn't very nice, Rose! What do you mean you tried to get out before? Here. Wil takes out a mouse from one of his pockets. This is Phillip. He's my pet mouse. How about you go into him,

Jan 18, 2018 4:41 pm
Wil moves southward, then turns left (east), and sneaks in that direction.
Jan 18, 2018 4:50 pm
You have no light and can't see anything down the passageway. Lighting a candle from your pack, you are able to dicern that there is a passage branching off to the right while the passage itself turns to the left farther down.
Jan 18, 2018 5:41 pm
Baroth gets to the bottom of the stairs and then walks to the end of the narrow tunnel. His light from his shield showing the way. He stops at the fork and waits to see if Wil comes back.
Jan 18, 2018 6:09 pm
As Greymond reaches the bottom of the stairs with the rest of the group he pauses taking in the stone-work, before removing a glove and running his bare palm across it. Trying to glean any information on who might have carved such a thing out of solid rock like his clansmen. He then reaches into his pack and pulls out his hemp rope looking for a place to tie it off too. Don't want to get lost in here eh'. Either of them kids know the way? I don't think this part was in the toy house.

History check for stone work - (1D20+6)

(19) + 6 = 25

Jan 18, 2018 6:43 pm
Greymond: There are wooden beams pacing the wall every five feet so its easy to find a place to tie a rope. The stone seems to be carved by run-of-the-mill miners or contractors but doesn't have the structure of a mine or a normal basement.

Baroth: Your shield's light illuminating the hallway, you see what Wil sees as well as two side passages branching off of the west hallway, one north and one south, as well as a room with a table in it at the end. You can only see a small bit of the room with the light you have.
Jan 18, 2018 7:48 pm
Wil walks back, cutting 6 inches of hempen rope, saying It's pitch black down there. Ryn, can you light this piece of rope? It'll make it easier to stash the light in the event that we notice someone coming, and it won't make noise if I have to drop it.
Jan 18, 2018 10:51 pm
"If I cast light on the rope the shield will be extinguished. At this point if we stash the rope then we can’t see but whatever is moving in pitch darkness can see. Why don’t we just look for torch sconces and light up as much as possible. Darkness isn’t going to hide us from something that lives in the dark and I’d rather not have to fight something in the dark."
Jan 18, 2018 11:08 pm
OOC:
Actually, you can have light on as many things as you like.
Jan 18, 2018 11:23 pm

OOC:
Alright. I might be wrong. You can carry on as you were.
Jan 19, 2018 2:27 am
Baroth gets out a 2 foot piece of Rope. Here cast light on this. Then we can cut it in two pieces. We can still see and Wil will have a light he can use to sneak around. Thorn is afraid of the dark. If i don't have a light I am probably going to freak out. Baroth hands the rope to Ryn to do what he needs to.
Jan 19, 2018 3:17 am
Ryn looked at the rope, "Hmm, I've never experimented with my magic like this before. I like it." he shrugged and cast light on the rope. "Don't worry Thorn, I'll keep you safe."
Jan 19, 2018 4:23 am
Baroth pulls his dagger out of his belt and cuts the rope in half. He gives Wil one half then hands the rope to Graymond. Hey Graymond, while you are down there, you mind tying this onto my right wrist for me? Baroth waits for a response before he dose anything.
Jan 19, 2018 4:26 am
Greymond watches the exchange and looks on in awe to see what information this experiment will bring about, completely failing to mention that he can see in the dark.
Jan 19, 2018 6:55 am
Thanks Ryn! Now everyone, follow me. Wil takes the lead, draws his shortsword, and walks towards the room at the end of the hallway.
Jan 19, 2018 3:21 pm
Baroth awkwardly ties the rope to his right wrist. Then follows Wil down the hallway.
Jan 19, 2018 3:35 pm
As Wil travels to the room, he sees large stone panels inscribed with names in small siderooms branching off from the hallway, each having two panels each. The ones on the left are inscribed "Gustav Durst" and "Elisibeth Durst". The ones on the right are inscribed "Rosavalda Durst" and "Thornbolt Durst". It becomes obvious that these are crypts. The room you arrive at contains a table flanked by two long wooden benches. Moldy bones lie strewn on the dirt floor. There is a darkened alcove in the middle of the south wall and a passage on both the north and west walls. They both turn swiftly as they begin so you do not see what lies beyond the threshold.
Jan 19, 2018 4:28 pm
Hey Rose and Thorn, can we go back and put your bodies in these spots with your names on them?
Jan 19, 2018 4:34 pm
Sure. Its where we should be anyway, I guess. Rose says speaking through Ryn.
Jan 19, 2018 4:57 pm
Sounds like a good idea to me. What does everyone else think?
Jan 19, 2018 5:01 pm
Greymond, Baroth, you two go up and grab those bodies that I wrapped up. I'm a little too small to be of any use carrying them.
Ryn and I will stay down here and defend the area.

Jan 20, 2018 12:20 am
Ryn whispers to Wil. "There’s something over there. I’m going to see if I can get a better look. Be ready to get the light out if it comes out." Ryn then casts mage hand and sends it to start moving the refuse to see if he can see whatever is over there. He holds out his hand ready to attack anything that runs towards him.

Technically, you would have disadvantage on perception checks in complete darkness if you have darkvision because it counts as dim light. Wil can't see at all.

As you move refuse upon refuse, the movements stop and you can't seem to uncover what was behind them with the limited force of the mage hand.

The north passage turns east briefly before turning back northward. Looking down the resulting hallway, you see stairs leading down to a landing which has a passage branching off to the west. After the landing, the stairs continue north to a room which is too far away to see anything in.

Perhaps if we can get this house sorted we can use it as a base of operations? He muses out loud as they continue. Wonder if we'll be able to shake that feeling if we do? How does it feel by the way? Jan 26, 2018 2:38 am
"An eye patch, that's a little strange. Mind if I take a look at it?" Ryn takes the eye patch from the chest and examines it, thinking back if he's heard or read about any similar items that may have been magical.

Jan 26, 2018 3:45 am
Ryn:You've heard tell of a couple of magical eye-patches but none match the one you find in the chest. Examining it, there is nothing to suggest it is magical.

Greymond: You don't find any books, scrolls, or anything of the like.

Baroth: There doesn't seem to be any names on the possessions in the chests you've opened or in the rooms.
Jan 26, 2018 3:50 am
Wil tried again with the lock pick.
OOC:
Is there a way for me to take a "passive" lock picking check, basically, to keep attempting until it opens?
Jan 26, 2018 4:38 am
OOC:
Well, to keep things less boring, I would say that one skill check represents you trying over and over again. One skill check does not equal one lock pick attempt. Your failure represents your inability to pry this particular lock as you've already tried to the best of your ability. In other words, no trying again with locks. Get creative. There are multiple ways to skin a cat.
Jan 26, 2018 5:47 am
Wil goes back to his old sword, grabs it, and begins hacking at the chest.
Jan 26, 2018 5:40 pm
Baroth seeing that Wil is having a hard time with that chest he walks over and sees him jabing his sword into it. Do you need some help there Wil? You look like you are having a tough time with that one. Is this the lock that can't be picked by the great Wil Kingsburrow? Baroth chuckles a little and get ready to bust open the lock if he asks for some assistance.

The shortsword fails to effect the structural integrity of the chest.
OOC:
For objects, they have a hardness which means that they can't be harmed if the damage total is less than a certain value. If it surpasses the value, it takes damage as normal. For example, Baroth slashed the rusty lock on the children's door which had a hardness of 5 and 5 hit points and, when he slashed it, he dealt 7 damage which surpassed the hardness and broke the lock.
Jan 26, 2018 6:27 pm
Baroth continues to watch Wil struggle with the chest and its lock. He crosses his arms and puts his right hand up to his chin like he is thinking. An ammused look spreads accross his face.
Jan 26, 2018 7:26 pm
Wil glares back at the paladin, and yells,YOU try opening it, then!

He steps back, flustered and mad, and drops the sword at the feet of the paladin.

The tumblers dissolve, leaving the chest easy to open. However, opening the chest, you realize that some of the contents have been damaged, a distinct hole burning through several sets of clothes and what looks like a bag made with a strange leather-like material. There was 10gp, 4sp, and 30cp in the bag that is now half corroded and spilling all inside the chest.
Jan 27, 2018 2:01 am
Shit, shit shit shit shit. Greymond, lifts the lid before attempting to do his best to kick the chest over away from the rest of the acid as quickly as possible. Not at all what I had in mind
OOC:

Jan 27, 2018 3:42 am
"Ok, Ryn puts the mace back into his bag "or we go the acid route." Ryn goes to one of the other chests and pulls out some of the clothing. Using mage hand, he starts to pull the coins out of the acid and places them onto the cloth trying to wipe them off.
Jan 27, 2018 6:36 am
Baroth, go ahead and break the last of the chests we find.
Jan 27, 2018 4:32 pm
Baroth puts his hands up and waves them. No no no... I wouldn't want to take your job Wil. I just like to mess with your pride. I think that it is funny. Baroth puts his hands down. Just let me know when you need help opening another open. Or might just do it before you get the chance to ask if I see you struggling again.
Jan 27, 2018 8:25 pm
Apologies friends. It appears I over estimated the quantity needed. He says shrugging and pulling out a notebook and quickly jotting down a note.
Jan 27, 2018 9:29 pm
Ryn recovers the coins pretty easily, the acid neutralized by now, but they do look worse for ware.
Jan 27, 2018 10:11 pm
"Well it looks like we have some coin to split. I figure it’s about 2g6s and 7c each... does anyone see anything else of value. With the risks we are taking cleansing this house, I don’t see a problem with taking things as payment for a job well done." Ryn looks around for anything else of value.

Jan 28, 2018 2:21 pm
Aye, maybe we go after the chanting and or monster. He pocketed his notebook and reached his hand back in his satchel, more leaving it there for comfort.
Jan 28, 2018 4:29 pm
I think if we find that chanting we will find what ever is going on here. There may have been a monster down here at one time or the kids herd the chanting and thought that was the monster. Maybe that parents where apart of some cult.
Jan 28, 2018 6:26 pm
Sure seems that the parents were a part of this cult. We should head west. There’s a hallway to the left as we entered this area.

Ryn: There are no traps that you can see apart from the pit of spikes.
Jan 29, 2018 12:13 am
Wil looks back at the group and says, Hey, there's a passage on the left and stairs straight ahead. I think we should take the stairs straight ahead, but I am also open to suggestions.
Jan 29, 2018 1:40 am
You have gotten us through here pretty good so far Wil.

As long as the chanting gets louder. He says simply. Lead on. He whispers.
Jan 29, 2018 11:43 pm
As the party approches the stairs, the chanting gets louder. You all see, as light illuminates the two sets of stairs, the stairway to the west double back on itself as the southward stairs open into a dark passageway.
Jan 30, 2018 5:06 am
Wil continues down the passageway.
Jan 30, 2018 5:20 am
OOC:
I'm not sure what you mean. The passagway ends with two sets of stairs, one going up and to the south and one going down to the west.
Jan 30, 2018 12:41 pm
After several sets of stairs, the passage opens to a large room with many alcove, each carrying a pedestal and a strange item. There are two passages going westward, the northernmost leading into a dark area and the southernmost another sloping down into murky water. This one is blocked by a large rusty portcullis. The chanting has become clearer, sounding like dozens of people yelling in unison He is the Ancient. He is the Land. This chanting is echoing from behind the portcullis.
Jan 30, 2018 3:26 pm
Baroth whispers. Anyone else getting a bad feeling about this? Baroth looks at the pedestal with the strange item and he tries to figure out what it is or how it relates to this cult.
Jan 30, 2018 3:43 pm
There are many pedestals, each carrying a strange item. They seem to possess the following.
• A small, mummified, yellow hand with sharp claws on a loop of rope
• A knife carved from bone
• A dagger with a rat’s skull set into the pommel
• An 8-inch-diameter varnished orb.
• An aspergillum carved from bone
• A folded cloak made from stitched pale skin
• A desiccated frog lashed to a stick
• A bag full of foul substance
• A black severed finger
• A 6-inch-tall wooden figurine of a mummy, its arms
crossed over its chest
• An iron pendant adorned with a devil’s face
• The shrunken, shriveled head
• A small wooden coffer.

Jan 30, 2018 6:42 pm
Stone, similar to the rest of the place.
Jan 30, 2018 6:46 pm
Greymond, can your acid burn through stone? Perhaps we can find a weak point in the wall and burn through it?
Jan 30, 2018 9:29 pm
I believe so, but I've never tried. Perhaps a test spot first? Lessons learnt from the chest, eh. He walks over to the portcullis inspecting it's joint to the wall. To see if the idea would even be feasible before pulling a vial.
OOC:
Not sure if I'd roll or what.
Jan 30, 2018 9:36 pm
Inspecting the portcullis, you find no joint or meaningful connection to the wall. Instead it seems that it would be drawn into the ceiling as it opens.
Jan 30, 2018 9:55 pm
Finding no discernable way to apply the acid he shrugs before informing the vial and dribbling a little onto the stone (6 dmg) and then putting the rest of the vial back into his pack. I don't think it'll work. We'll have to find another way.
Jan 30, 2018 10:28 pm

Jan 30, 2018 11:51 pm
OOC:
Apologies, earlier I thought you said we'd have to meet a certain amount of damage to break an object. The acid always does 6 damage on objects. Figured that's what it was meaning. Was more just looking to cause a divet in the rock.
Jan 30, 2018 11:52 pm
You guys can try, but I think we should see if this little alcove has an alternate way in. Light in one hand, shortsword in the other, Wil begins searching the northern dark area for any way to get into the portcullis-blocked room.

I think we should try and look for another way in. I don't think that we will be able to get in that way.
Jan 31, 2018 1:54 am
"Ok let's go... they seem to be getting more frantic in there. Who do you think they are chanting for?"
Jan 31, 2018 2:51 pm
Before they leave Greymond goes to inspect the varnished orb on it's pedestal before poking at it with one stubby little finger.
OOC:
Not hard enough to knock it from it's perch or anything though.

In one of the alcoves, you spy a skeletal corpse in tattered black robes chained to the wall.

The chanting stops as you peer into this forty-foot-square room. The smooth masonry walls provide excellent acoustics. Featureless stone pillars support the ceiling, and a breach in the west wall leads to a dark cave heaped with refuse. Murky water covers most of the floor. Stairs lead up to dry stone ledges that hug the walls. In the middle of the room, more stairs rise to form an octagonal dais that also rises above the water. Rusty chains with shackles dangle from the ceiling directly above a stone altar mounted on the dais. The altar is carved with hideous depictions of grasping ghouls and is stained with dry blood

Baroth and Wil wade through the 3ft water and climb onto the top of the dais. The chanting rises once more as thirteen dark apparitions appear on the ledges overlooking the room. Each one resembles a black-robed figure holding a torch, but the torch’s fire is black and seems to draw light into it. Where you’d expect to see faces are voids. "One must die!" they chant, over and over. "One must die! One must die!"
Feb 1, 2018 11:32 pm
Baroth looks up and around the room. Looking at all the figures that had appeared. I think we may have found the source of all the chanting. Baroth readies his weapon just in case one of these things wants to come down and take a swing at him. He looks over at the alter.

As Ryn walks into the room, he looks at the apparitions on the wall and calls out. "Hello there, none of us are going to sacrifice anybody, so you can stop chanting that... who were you chanting about earlier? Who is it that you are trying to bring out?"
OOC:
Do these seem similar to the children or the maid from before? Do they all look the same or are some different sizes, shapes, etc?

Can Ryn piece together anything about this group with a trained religion role?

Rolls

Religion - (1d20+2)

(6) + 2 = 8

Feb 2, 2018 5:20 pm
You notice that they are definitely acting like a cult but you don't know which one or what they worship.
OOC:
Whether or not they are illusions requires a straight intelligence roll.
Feb 2, 2018 5:33 pm
Ryn carefully looks at the apparitions against the wall. "Can anybody tell if they are illusions or real? I can attack one, but if they are real and attack us then we are in a tight spot."
OOC:
Perfect time for a natural 1...

Intelligence - (1d20)

(1) = 1

Feb 2, 2018 5:35 pm
Ryn has no idea. They certainly look real.
Feb 2, 2018 5:47 pm
Wil looks at these apparitions to determine if they are real or illusory.
OOC:
So, it's intelligence and not investigation?

Rolls

Intelligence (to determine reality of apparitions) - (1d20+2)

(13) + 2 = 15

Feb 2, 2018 5:59 pm
The apparitions seem real but not corporeal. They continue their chant One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 2, 2018 6:05 pm
These aren't corporeal, but they are real. Blast 'em, Ryn!
Feb 2, 2018 7:03 pm
"Wait... there are 13 of them right? How many items were there on the pedestals? Are they connected? What if we remove or destroy some of the items?" Ryn runs out of the room and uses mage hand to take the wooden coffer off of the stand and moves it to the ground away from the pedestal. "Did anything happen?"
Feb 2, 2018 7:06 pm
Nothing happened. One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 2, 2018 7:16 pm
Ryn would like to look at the coffee. Using mage hand can he open it?
Feb 2, 2018 7:21 pm
The mage hand opens the coffer to reveal a 6in, withered tongue lying inside.
Feb 2, 2018 7:34 pm
Dang, now I wish we saw that ugly creature we killed and led him down here instead of killing him in the halls. Wil starts chuckling.
Feb 3, 2018 4:54 am
Baroth looks at the alter then up at the robed visions. What if I destroyed the alter. Do you think they will go away or get mad?
Feb 3, 2018 4:59 am
Only one way to find out? Greymond pulls a vial of acid from his satchel, jumping out from behind Ryn.
Feb 4, 2018 1:48 am
Ryn uses mage hand to move all of the items into a pile on the ground. "Does anybody have a torch or any oil, I think we need to destroy these items. I don't have anything that can damage that alter, sorry."
Feb 4, 2018 3:28 pm
I've got fire, and I've got acid. We can use either, or both. I just want this to be over with.
Feb 4, 2018 7:22 pm
"let’s try to burn them then destroy this alter. Ryn is going to use the wooden coffer to hold the fire and look around for anything flammable that will burn.

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20)

(13) = 13

Feb 4, 2018 8:03 pm
You look around but don't find anything particularly flammable except the some of the items on the pedestals and the tattered robes of the old skeleton chained up in the prison area.
Feb 5, 2018 1:15 am
We can kindle the flame with some length of rope.
Feb 5, 2018 1:16 am
Wil wraps about 15 ft of Hellen rope around the items, fastening them together.
Feb 5, 2018 1:24 am
OOC:
Ok, so you've stepped off of the dais.
Feb 5, 2018 1:37 am
The chanting increases in volume and speed as Wil crosses the water to where Ryn is assembling the items. One must die! One must die! One must die! they chant, their voidlike faces staring intently at Baroth as he stands before the altar.
OOC:
Now with all of the chants' inflections audible, anyone can make an insight check to better ascertain what they want from you.
Feb 5, 2018 3:58 am
Insight check

Rolls

Insight - (1d20+1)

(18) + 1 = 19

Feb 5, 2018 2:36 pm
It seems like that they want something to die on the altar. You get a strong sense of 'or else' from their nearly frantic chanting. One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 5, 2018 3:00 pm
OOC:
Deleted previous post if someone was replying to it.

Was trying to get my bearings, is Wil, in the same room as us? Were all the pedestals with the things on them in the same room?
Feb 5, 2018 3:04 pm
OOC:
Greymond, Ryn, and Wil are in the pedestal room and were yelling into the altar room through the portcyllis. Baroth is in the altar room on the dais.
Feb 5, 2018 3:14 pm
Ya'll might want to stand back. He says pulling a vial filled with an orangish fluid.
Feb 5, 2018 4:52 pm
Wil walks towards the door with the portcullis, a step behind that portcullis threshold, and draws his bow, just in case those apparitions try something.
Feb 5, 2018 6:35 pm
Guys...... I am not liking this...... Standing there on the alter alone, Baroth is staring at these figures. Does anyone have a chicken that we can kill for these guys? His tone ment to be kind of a joke and serious at the same time.
Feb 5, 2018 11:21 pm
Once Greymond drops the vial onto the pile, Ryn moves into the alter room. "Baroth, I hope you're not serious... Ryn turns to the chanting figures... "Oh shut up will you..." turning back to Baroth "how can you joke about supporting some sort of twisted blood ritual. I'm not taking part in any of it." Ryn pulls out his mace and looks towards the alter. "Now what exactly are we trying to do in here? Do we just want to smash it?"
OOC:
As I move towards the alter with my mace out, and ask about smashing it, does the attitude of the apparitions change?
Feb 5, 2018 11:28 pm
The hooded figures continue unperturbed, even as the mound of items burn. One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 5, 2018 11:59 pm
Let's just leave. Whatever the apparitions were outside, we really did what was right for those kids. I think we are done with this house. Let's bail!
Feb 6, 2018 12:11 am
Of course I am kidding Ryn. I don't think that it is such a good idea leaving this thing around. It is giving me a bad feeling. DO you want to smash the alter with me Ryn? Baroth stands there at the alter with his sword drawn and gets ready to attack it. The swoard is high over his head and is about to drop as soon as someone says that it is okay.
Feb 6, 2018 4:23 am
Of course, let's destroy some evil... Ryn smashes down with his mace against the alter.
OOC:
By the way, my st is an 8 so I doubt I'm doing much of anything

Wil waits with his bow drawn, awaiting the response of anything he can see.
Feb 6, 2018 4:22 pm
Maybe we should just leave? Greymomd whispers.
Feb 6, 2018 4:55 pm
Both blows fail to effect the stone altar. The cultists continue One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 6, 2018 4:59 pm
Baroth puts his sword away and gets down with both hands on the alter, then tries to push the top off or knock it over.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20+5)

(8) + 5 = 13

Feb 6, 2018 5:39 pm
The altar does not budge. One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 6, 2018 5:46 pm
And if we don't? I could cast detect magic as a ritual perhaps? Greymond had joined the rest of the group now. Or we could always leave. I'm not killing one of you.
Feb 6, 2018 5:47 pm
Baroth tries to push. Uhhhh Crap! He stands and looks around the room. There is something here that we are missing.
Feb 6, 2018 5:52 pm
"I’m sure what we need is blood, but I’m not taking part in it. Is there anything else in this house we need to accomplish? Perhaps this is something we can bring to the attention of the authorities."
Feb 6, 2018 6:10 pm
Let's just get out of here. We still have to meet that guy's contact.
Feb 6, 2018 6:22 pm
Is there a monster that we still need to find in here? Did we check all the rooms? Baroth starts to carefully walk away from the alter.
Feb 6, 2018 7:01 pm
Can you sense the monster? All we know is that the kids outside, who we thought were alive, told us about a monster that their sick parents told them about, but that they never saw. But those same kids outside told us about a baby in danger, and we determined that was false. How much more are you going to believe without looking at the facts? Listen: if you can tell me that you can sense the presence of a monster here, then I'm with you to the end. Otherwise, let's just get away from this creepy place.
Feb 7, 2018 1:20 am
If there is a monster here, I doubt it's going anywhere if it's been here as long as those children have been dead. Maybe we meet this contact and if we have to we can come back. Maybe someone in town knows more about what happened in this house.

Baroth uses his last use of Divine Sense to see if there is anything near by. He clutches his holy symbol aand closes his yes.
Feb 7, 2018 4:36 am
Nothing shows up to Baroth. One must die! One must die! One must die!
Feb 7, 2018 4:48 pm
Well this sucks. I can't sense anything, but that doesn't mean that nothing is here.
Feb 7, 2018 5:10 pm
Really, at this point we have two options: we can leave, or we can find someone to kill on the altar. I vote we just leave.
Feb 7, 2018 5:13 pm
"I don't suppose one of them would count as one must die would they?"
OOC:
We've been in a couple of fights so far, based on our fighting abilities, do I think we could take all of them if they attacked or do I feel like we would be completely destroyed?
Feb 7, 2018 5:22 pm
OOC:
If they were like the nursemaid, you would likely not win the fight but they arent behaving like anything you've encountered so far. You're not sure.

Feb 7, 2018 5:29 pm
The only lifes you see in your immediate surroundings are yourselves and the mouse poking it's little nose outside Wil's pack.
Feb 7, 2018 5:31 pm
Greymond eyeballs Wil's mouse, maybe a little too thoughtfully.
Feb 7, 2018 5:38 pm
Wil notices this eyeballing, and then glares at Greymond. Let's go.
Feb 7, 2018 6:05 pm
Wil's words break Greymonds eyelock with his tiny companion. Er, aye, let's be goin.
Feb 7, 2018 6:25 pm
Wil stands outside the portcullis, bow in hand, waiting for Baroth, Ryn, and Greymond.
Feb 7, 2018 7:56 pm
As Ryn leaves the room he talks with others, "on our way out, we should double check the rooms to make sure we aren't leaving anything behind. I'd hate to leave something that could aid us in the future to someone in cahoots with this lot. I know we didn't search the first floor and that might offer some clues."
Feb 7, 2018 8:52 pm
Let's get out of here. Baroth follows the rest out of the room.
Feb 8, 2018 2:42 am
OOC:
And Greymond?
Feb 8, 2018 5:16 am
Greymond follows the rest of the party to the first floor. This place gives me the creeps. Let's hurry with this searchin' business and be on our way.
Feb 8, 2018 5:44 am
After the last person hops off of the dias, the chanting stops for a moment only to raise to a forte, the ground trembling beneath you. Lorghoth the Decayer, we awaken thee! The mass of refuse in the side of the room shudders and raises long, thick limbs made of plant matter. The face of the creature, if you could call it a face, displays a set of grotesquely large teeth.

The sword lands and cuts off a chunk but, as large a creature as it is, it barely makes a dent. The creature descends on Baroth, lashing out with two heavy, thick appendages. One catches him, nearly knocking him to the floor. The cultists begin a new chant. The End comes! Death be praised!

Feb 12, 2018 6:21 pm
Baroth we need to leave... Ryn runs up to Baroth and touches his back, sending a healing light into him. Ryn then pulls back as far as he can towards the portcullis and lifting his hand shoots another eldritch blast at the creature.

Greymond hearing the smashes again turns to see Ryn get struck, and out of frustration, reaches into his satchel and pulls a vial of orangish liquid throwing it behind the lumbering thing so as to not injure Ryn further. Out now! He says as the fire erupts at the giants back.

Wil's arrow sticks into the monster while Baroth's javelin bounces harmlessly off of it's thick hide. The creature then wades through the water and gets past the portcullis, the true height of the creature now apparent. Feb 23, 2018 1:23 pm
The creature does not make it into Wil's sights but is still in pursuit.
Feb 23, 2018 4:25 pm
This can wait until my turn, but I already know what I am going to do:

Wil runs up to 10 feet before the hole and tells everyone,

The hole is about 10 feet ahead of me. Jump across, and we'll make our stand in that room on the other side of it.
OOC:
How can Wil mechanically help the others jump the gap?
Feb 23, 2018 4:45 pm
OOC:
Everybody can jump the gap easily, no rolls required. It's only 5ft across.
Feb 23, 2018 5:30 pm
OOC:
Cool, well then, Wil will wait for all 3 to jump across before he does, so just let me know if/when people cross that gap.
Feb 23, 2018 9:05 pm
Greymond takes a running start at the gap not wanting to take any chances leaping to the other side to ensure the rest make it across. Alright, in an orderly fashion now.
Feb 23, 2018 11:00 pm
Ryn jumped across holding his side... "Why are we stopping and not just running out of this blasted house..."
Feb 23, 2018 11:17 pm
Just run you fools. Baroth keeps running his armor klinking as he runs.
Feb 23, 2018 11:42 pm
Cowards... Wil mutters under his breath as he jumps across the gap and follows the rest of the group.
Feb 24, 2018 3:39 am
The creature's heavy footsteps sound as you all round the corner but stop halfway. The footsteps slowly resume, leaving in the direction they came.

Ryn stops to catch his breath... and turns to look back at where the creature was. "This needs to be handled at some point, but one more hit from that creature and I would have died. This place is messed up."
Feb 24, 2018 6:11 pm
Aye, agreed. I think we should formulate a better plan though, we went in without having any idea what we'd be up against. At least we know the little buggers weren't lyin'. He says continuing on with the party.

I think we should take a short rest here, just to get our bearings. Then let's decide what to do.

"I agree we need to rest, but lets get to a safe spot first."
Feb 26, 2018 4:28 am
Yes, a safe spot, so long as we're not being chased.
Feb 26, 2018 9:51 pm
Ryn thinks of the dead corpse of the nanny in the room, and the animated armor... If we do that, I'll feel more comfortable where there's some decent light, and a defensible position.
Feb 26, 2018 11:11 pm
I agree with you Ryn, but then what do you want to do after that. Come down and battle that creature?
Feb 27, 2018 1:13 am
Ryn took a moment to think about what Baroth had said. "I fear that we did little damage to it the first time around and it almost killed me. It is a creature that if we can stay away from and attack from afar, we may defeat it, but if we close in, then we won't stand a chance. I don't know what is best, but I know that if we do fight it again, I will only engage it from afar. Perhaps if we came back after we finish whatever errand or quest we are needed for, then we would be better prepared to fight it."
Mar 1, 2018 5:30 pm
I say we just forget the creature. It's not in the habit of leaving that bottom level, by the looks of it. I say we put a sign condemning the house and get on with our day. Or we burn the house down. Either way, we should head out. I vote that we go out the way that we came (up to the attic, then down the main stairwell and out the door).
Mar 1, 2018 5:37 pm
I'm all for us leavin' right this moment. However, it would be irresponsible of us to ignore the monster. Maybe we should find out what we actually came here for first, and then decide whether we come back and face this gross thing. In either case I'm sure we're being waited on. I have no doubt that the messenger that delivered the message has sent word that we are here. He says side stepping towards the way they came. It would be interesting to see what that thing is though, so much power.
Mar 2, 2018 2:25 am
"I agree Greymond, we should take care of this when our mission is finished... But before we leave this house for good, I need a short break.

The room is filled with thick black smoke, pouring from the ruined oven, and the walls writhe with life. Apr 25, 2018 4:26 pm
After walking for what seemed ages, a tired and lost man in chainmail armor trudges out of the fog into the town square. He takes a few more steps before realizing that he can actually see his surroundings now and he is not longer trapped in the fog. Finally! I'm out of that blasted fog! He mutters to himself as he stands in the middle of the road looking about him at this decrepit, seemingly abandoned town he stumbled upon. As he inspects his new surroundings, he notices a small figure come dashing out of one of the buildings. As he looks closer he notices that something isn't right. The hairs on the back of his neck stand up as he feels a slight tugging in the back of his mind. Basra begins to approach the figure who seems to be having some trouble breathing as he stumbles to a stop a short distance from the door and leans over coughing and spluttering.
Basra calls out as he approaches, "Hello friend. Are you alright?" taking in the bedraggled, scraped up appearance of the small figure before him as he comes near.

Seeing that the Halfling isn't responding to his call, Basra quickens his pace and kneels down over the prone figure. He quickly assesses the state of the Halfling, placing his fingers on the neck of the unconscious figure. Feeling a pulse but no other signs of life, he holds up his holy symbol with one hand placing his other on the figures chest. Closing his eyes, he beseeches his diety for aid and channels the divine power thru himself and into the body.

As Wil works on the lock, Ryn looks into the sky and starts angerly talking out loud. "You sent me here to fight evil but gave me nothing to defeat a taint so foul. Have you sent me to fail? You need me to do your bidding but I need more, I need something." As his rant finishes, Ryns eyes start to glow as his hands start to shake. "Wil, you might want to move out of the way, I’m either going to open that door, or burn the house down. " As Ryn takes a step back and waits for Wil to move, a giant flaming sphere of fire appears at the door. Ryn will slam the door with sphere, and if it won’t budge, he will take the full minute moving the sphere around trying to set the wooden house on fire.
Apr 26, 2018 3:43 am
The door doesn't budge but the sphere manages to set the house sufficiently alight to eventually burn it to the ground after making a few laps around it.
Apr 26, 2018 4:11 am
Basra looks on in silent contemplation and a little concern as he watched Ryn’s antics. In all his time spent in Ryn’s company, he has never seen him so worked up before. After the flaming sphere dissipates and Ryn seems to be slightly more calm, Basra steps up to him and, placing a hand on his shoulder, he says, "Ryn, my friend, what has happened? I heard of your encounter with the Vistani from the barkeep at the tavern and of your destination, but what has happened here?" He glances around taking in the appearances of Ryn’s companions. "You seem to have run into some trouble."

We were lured into this house by some curse from a cult. My friend didn’t make it out. Wil sobs a little, then collects himself.

We must press onward.
Apr 26, 2018 7:56 am
Looking back at the house as the fire consumes it, Basra says to no one in particular, "Well, I did not know this friend of yours, but at the very least, this flaming pyre should serve as an acceptable cremation, and his spirit can pass on." finishing his statement, Basra lapses into a respectable silence, watching the house burn.
Apr 26, 2018 11:07 am
"I’d hate for his final resting place to be in this cursed town, but at least the evil will not take any others. I have never seen anything like it." As Ryn moves from the front to the others he looks to the sky and in ceslestial says "Thank you for that gift, I will use it to purge this land." As Ryn reaches into his pack for his water skin, there is a small white book with gilded edges. Inside, the writing is in celestial. "Another gift from my patron I believe. I hope it is strong enough to aide us and that I am worthy enough to wield it. Baras my friend you have shown up at the right time. Perhaps your patron is watching over us as well. It is good to see you my friend."
Apr 26, 2018 11:39 am
"Indeed, it seems our patrons do work in their own ways, and at their own paces. I am glad to journey with you again my friend." Basra grins as he clasps forearms with Ryn. Glancing around at the others with Ryn, he asks, "And who are these fellows that you're traveling with?"
Apr 26, 2018 2:12 pm
At least it don't seem like they'll be able to lure anyone in anymore. The children are at rest that started this mess. He says watching the house burn, a slight smirk growing across his face.
Apr 26, 2018 3:48 pm
Yep, good thing. Those kids've been tortured enough. Now, we must press on to our destination. We must find this Burgomaster.
OOC:
Do we have any ideas about where the Burgomaster may be?
Apr 26, 2018 4:45 pm
Lost in his new book, Ryn quickly moves to introduce Basra to his new friends. "Forgive me my friend... this is Wil, a fine man with a blade and quiet as a mouse. This bearded fellow is Greymond, handy with potions and alchemical arts. Friends, this is Basra, a cleric I used to travel with until our paths were led in different ways. I wish you would have made it before we went into the house. It would have been a much different outcome.".
Apr 26, 2018 6:41 pm
OOC:
You don't know where the Burgomaster is and you don't see any buildings that would befit a baron for the low visibility. In the contrast of the starless sky, you do , however, see a pillar of light shining through the fog toward the center of the town.

Another building in the square also seems to be inhabited. The sparse light from this building spills out from behind drawn heavy curtains. A sign over the door, creaking on its hinges, reads "Bildrath's Mercantile."
