Chapter 4: Adventures in Blingdenstone

May 25, 2016 2:30 pm
You are escorted out of the building and left outside with no escort. You were given directions to your two tasks:

1. Taking care of the ooze problem: Head out to the northwest and discover what sort of twisted magic is spawning these oozes that are troubling the gnomes so much.

2. Arrange a meeting with the Goldwhiskers: Out to the west there is a clan of svirfneblin wererats. Dorbo and Senni want you to arrange a meeting to determine if they'd be willing to join up and assist in restoring Blingdenstone to glory
May 25, 2016 3:48 pm
Hunter stands in the darkness for a moment, in deep thought. Then she turns to the party and says, "You'd think they'd have at least given us a compass. Which way is west?"

Hunter meant in a general sense, as she has no sun to ascertain direction and their scouts were kept or opted to remain in the city. But now that you've provided the map, does that mean the wererats and oozes are within Blingdenstone itself, and heading west takes us to the market #7?

OOC:
There is actually much more to the map, this is just the portion that's been totally reclaimed. If you look closely you can see tunnels running off the map.
May 25, 2016 4:21 pm
A full map of Blingdenstone, as provided by the people who escorted you out of the hall:

I debated giving out this map for a while vs giving out an unmarked version. I thought an unmarked version would be nearly impossible to use as a reference for you, so I give you the DM version
May 25, 2016 4:43 pm
Hunter orients the map one way, then the other, based on landmarks of where they currently are and what tunnels lead out. She squints at the map and at the tunnel, and repeats for a few more times. Hopefully this is correct; underground living is definitely not her style.

"Well," she says with a sigh, "we ought to head to the market. It's on the way to the wererats, and perhaps we'll find something useful there."
May 25, 2016 6:52 pm
I nod. "I can sell some of these trinkets I've been collecting and pick up supplies. Are we in need of anything?"
May 25, 2016 7:03 pm
"I might want to pick up a sling or a crossbow," says Hunter, perking up at the thought. "Something with range in case I am too weak to cast spells."
May 25, 2016 11:11 pm
"Let's just be quick about it!! These are some nice enough folk but let's get done what needs to be done." Elfog grumbles, mostly for the sake of grumbling.
May 26, 2016 2:15 pm
You make your way back to the market to look for suitable merchants. You see several merchants who could probably serve your needs. As you go to see one to find out what kind of a deal you can get you hear a shout of alarm. The deep gnomes around you all draw weapons and retreat as you see a guard stumble back, then rise up in the air. A strange shimmer around him reveals the surface of the gelatinous cube that has engulfed him. Two gelatinous cubes are approaching from the west end of the cavern through a collapsed tunnel.

They oozes are approximately 30 feet to your west at the moment, with four deep gnomes standing between you and the monsters.

You have initiative, what do you do?
May 26, 2016 4:12 pm
"This is very inconvenient timing!" screams a frustrated Hunter. She backs up to gain some distance, then stomps her foot and pushes out with her hand, sending a 5-pound chunk of loose stone (or some unfortunate merchant's wares, whichever would not cross through the guards in front) hurtling at the gelatinous cube containing the gnome guard.

The cube carrying the gnome wobbles and shakes as stuff flies into it. It makes an oddly solid noise on impact before the items sink in (11 damage).

The gnomes charge the cubes and begin hacking away at the things. Their attacks seem to be having an effect on the creature holding their companion as it wobbles and becomes slightly runny.
OOC:
Still have Xeliss and Soliin to take a turn yet
May 27, 2016 10:18 pm
OOC:
Is there anything around/above I could knock down/over onto the cubes?
May 31, 2016 3:45 am
I point at the ground directly below the cubes and chant. When I'm done I raise my hands upwards, and several sharp spikes and thorns appear underneath them.
OOC:
Casting Spike Growth- The ground in a 20-foot radius centered on a point within range twists and sprouts hard spikes and thorns. The area becomes difficult terrain for the duration. When a creature moves into or within the area, it takes 2d4 piercing damage for every 5 feet it travels. The transformation of the ground is camouflaged to look natural. Any creature that can’t see the area at the time the spell is cast must make a Wisdom (Perception) check against your spell save DC to recognize the terrain as hazardous before entering it.

There are merchants' wares all over the place. You could probably find some stacked crates to knock over. The cubes are currently 40 feet away, so if you want to close in you'd have to use your bonus action to dash.

Unsure of how to fight something made of slime, Soliin wishes really hard he had some more protection. He feels the similar warmth in his hands as before and with a small pop, it's almost like he has a second skin around him. He tries to move forward a bit and hide among the wares.
OOC:
Casting shield. Can I cast and move? Or only cast? If only cast, ignore the move, but I'll use my bonus to hide.

OOC:
Shield is actually a reaction to cast, so you actually don't have to cast it until something hits you, then you cast and can potentially cause that attack to miss and keep the +5 AC until the beginning of your next turn.

And you can move, use and action, and use a bonus action on your turn. You don't miss out on your movement on your turn unless a specific situation calls for you to miss it.

Ooops, misunderstood how the spell works. Thanks for clarifying. Retcon!
Soliin pulls out his crossbow and melds into the darkness to his side, hidden among the wares of the various merchants. As soon as he finds a good spot, he fires a bolt at one of the gelatinous messes.

Rolls

The ground around the cubes shifts and sharpens, becoming solid stone spikes all over the floor. The cubes continue to move forward slowly (even more so now that they have spikes in the way) (5 damage). The attempt to absorb the four gnomish guards, but the little creatures manage to scramble out of the way, getting scraped up a bit by the spike growth.

Soliin's bolt slams into the cube holding the gnome guard (16 damage), sinking in until it's about 2 inches away from his eye. You can see panic contort his expression.
OOC:
Cubes are now 25 feet away. There is about 10 feet in front of you before the ground becomes spiky.

Soliin, you forgot to roll sneak attack damage, so I did it for you. Rolled an extra 9 damage. Your sheet also seems to be missing everything you got from level 4 except for the HP. I believe you got Crossbow Mastery?

It is now back to the player's turn!
Jun 3, 2016 8:54 pm
"Bring it down! Save the guard!" Hunter says, flicking her hand like she is throwing a dagger. Four arcane darts lance out at the ooze containing the poor gnome.

Magic Missile 2nd-level - (4d4+4)

Hesitating to plunge into the bed of spikes that have sprung up, Mai'ngor looks about for something to throw at the monster. He grabs a nearby torch, runs up to the edge of the spike bed, and hurls the burning brand at the cube that has engulfed the gnome guard.
OOC:
I'm guessing I don't get to add Proficiency to this attack roll?

Hunter's magical bolts slam into the cube one after another (14 damage). The blobs form is drippy and gross now as it's losing it's solidity. A moment later a thrown torch lands on it and sets it ablaze. It quickly burns to nothing, leaving the gnomish guard singed, but mostly unharmed.

It takes but another 12 seconds to whittle down the other cube. The gnomes stand in place, wary of moving and impaling themselves in the spikes on the ground, "Hey, someone want to clear this up for us?" one of them shouts to no one in particular.

OOC:
Just to note, the attacks were doing damage, the cube was becoming less and less solid as you beat the crap out of it, the torch was just the last straw

"That may be a good idea," says Hunter, moving her flattened hand in the air and casting Mold Earth upon the spiked area, working to smooth the surface. "Perhaps these oozes are better handled before the wererats. They just move and eat without the reasoning to avoid danger."

She looks to the rest of the group. "Is everyone okay?"
Jun 6, 2016 10:15 pm
Not even getting to slice into the cube, Elfog silently hooks his axe onto his back and joins the others. "These cubes do seem pretty easy ta deal with. So we burning ourselves some cubes before the rats, eh?"
Jun 6, 2016 10:50 pm
Soliin jogs over to one of the guards. "So torches are a good weapon against the slimies?" he asks. "Your kingo, or not-so-king-whatever-he-is, asked us to help with the jelly problem."
Jun 6, 2016 11:41 pm
Hunter tries to recall anything she might have learned about oozes. Barring that, she looks around for a scholarly type that might either know, or know of where she can research this.

"I agree. We made short work of these. Let us finish off the rest."
Jun 7, 2016 12:05 pm
I nod in agreement and follow the others.
Jun 7, 2016 6:03 pm
What was I thinking about? Hunter jars herself out of her momentary thoughts. "Do we need anything from these merchants? Assuming they're open for business after this little... mess."
Jun 7, 2016 7:01 pm
The gnomes thank you for your help, the one who was caught by the cube even going so far as to shake your hands. The merchants seem stunned for a moment, but then shake it off as gnomes always do and get back to selling their wares.

Hunter browses the stalls and seeks out an Explorer's Pack for some semblance of camping comfort, plus a Light Crossbow and Ammunition for defense. Finally, a Potion of Healing.

"Perhaps some lamp oil, as fire seems to be an effective weapon against the oozes." Mai'ngor suggests. The tikbalang never touched a single coin out of any treasure the group has found, and so he has no money. It is just as well, as he feels he has everything he might need, though if his squire Brynn were here the loyal halfling would surely disagree.

Soliin looks around the market for a vial of Alchemist's Fire, a Potion of Healing, and a bullseye lantern.
Jun 10, 2016 4:03 am
I give him a grin. "Works for me. Where's the good stuff? I've got some trinkets to trade..."

Alchemist's Fire: 45 gp
Bullseye Lantern: 9 gp
Potion of Healing: 45 gp
Jun 11, 2016 8:02 pm
Her own necessities taken care of, Hunter looks over her shoulder at the party's progress. Seeing that some are still haggling with merchants, the sorcerer spends some time window-shopping.
Jun 13, 2016 3:36 pm
On the ground, where the cubes were at, you also find some stuff that they dropped. You find 12 gp and a very well made shortsword (+1, Drowcraft)
Jun 13, 2016 3:56 pm
Once you are done with your shopping you head to a door on the north wall (leading into area 28). A guard inspects you for a moment and then opens the door, "Good luck," he says, very seriously as you go through.

The walls of this great cavern are covered in slime, dripping, sickening green slime. Echoes of dripping water also fill the cave, in the center of which is a large spherical structure is held up off the floor by stone pillars. Around these pillars crawl dozens of living oozes, heaving forward while reaching out with grasping pseudopods. The sphere's surface, like the cave walls, is covered with slime. Black slime swirls with yellow and gray slime in a disgusting soup, the unearthly patterns in the movements of the slime straining your eyes and tugging at your mind.

A disembodied voice fills the cave. "What's this, what's this? Visitors? Now? Not yet! We're not ready! Go away, pests! I will call upon thee and all of Blingdenstone to announce our glad tidings of the Faceless Lord to come at the proper time! Begone!"
Jun 14, 2016 5:39 am
Having given Shoor Vandree's sword to Soliin, Mai'ngor decides to keep the newly-found drow-made sword for himself. HE takes the gold and uses some of it to buy a few flasks of lamp oil. He proceeds brandishing not a sword, but a lit torch.

As the group enters the room of oozes his eyes go wide. He should have brought a whole cask of oil!

Jun 15, 2016 11:43 pm
Soliin creeps out as quietly as he creeped in. "I'm not sure we had enough info to take this job..." he says as everyone gets out.

Jun 16, 2016 3:42 pm
Hunter takes a moment to find her breath, then narrows her eyes at the guard. "Your leaders have a talent for understatement," she says, even as she tidies up her rags with Prestidigitation to take her mind off what she had just seen. "We'll need to figure out a different plan. Which way are the wererats?"

In the event that the group must pass through the marketplace again, Hunter asks if anyone has weapons of silver.
Jun 16, 2016 9:48 pm
"A plan that involves a lot of fire" Elfog mumbles under his breath in dwarvish as Hunter talks to the guard.

"Yes, Rats first then whatever in the hell those things were are going to be a far distant second."
Jun 17, 2016 3:44 pm
The guard chuckles, "A bit more than you expected? It's pretty nasty in there, alright, and getting worse by the day," he gives directions to the Goldwhisker Warrens, the are of Blingdenstone that the wererats have claimed as their own.

You do indeed have to pass through the market (area 7) and find that purchasing a silver weapon costs 100 gp (90 for you, 80 for Xeliss) on top of the base price of the weapon. A steep charge, but they are in demand these days with the looming threat of the wererats. You may choose to make any purchases you wish, as long as they occur before the first combat you may encounter down there.

You pass through the market and into the main entry chamber (area 5), then turn west to approach a large set of reinforced and locked double doors that lead into the Warrens. The guards briefly listen to your story and then confirm that they got word from Dorbo to let you through. They tell you to knock with a "three-then-two" signal if you want to be let out.

The doors are opened and you enter into near-complete darkness with a warning to Watch your step in there! A little bit of glowing fungi sheds some light, but those without darkvision will need another source of light. The chamber you enter into is empty at first glance, with a tunnel leading to a neighboring chamber.
OOC:
You are in the chamber just below 23 at the moment (between 5 and 23)

I sell my jewelry and wand and look into purchasing 2 silvered javelins.
Jun 17, 2016 4:25 pm

Jun 17, 2016 4:44 pm
"I sincerely hope we won't have to use them," Hunter says, referring to the silvered weapons. "But I really don't know what to expect anymore, so I thought it be best to prepare for anything."

Cursing in dwarvish as Mai'ngor's sword nearly blinds him, Elfog shields his eyes to let them readjust from the darkness. "Hell's bells, a little warning next time, would ya!?" the dwarf growls.
Jun 20, 2016 6:02 pm
As Mai'ngor leads you through the cavern to the tunnel he suddenly feels a pull at his leg. He looks down and sees a rope tighten about his right leg. It quickly begins to tighten and pull upwards, dragging him along with it.
OOC:
Mai'ngor, roll a dex save to see if you can cut the rope before it pulls you up!
As it begins to lift him off the ground you can hear footsteps coming from the tunnel ahead. It sounds like they're coming in your direction.
Jun 20, 2016 9:17 pm
Reaching for Tolvihar, Elfog moves ahead of Mai'ngor (either as he's hanging from the rope or busy landing on his head after cutting it) and takes up a defensive position
Jun 20, 2016 10:47 pm
The trap takes Mai'ngor by surprise. He grunts as he is whisked off his feet by the noise. From his awkward position he slashes futilely at the rope with his sword.

"Watch your step in there," Hunter mutters sarcastically, mimicking the guard they spoke to earlier. Her ire is directed more at the deep gnomes' penchant for doublespeak than it is at their current predicament. She clutches her hand upon empty air, manifesting a spectral Mage Hand to work at the rope trap.
OOC:
Can I use Mage Hand with a dagger to cut the rope? If that counts as an attack, then I'd like to use the spell to help loosen a knot or whatever's keeping Mai'ngor's foot in place.
Jun 20, 2016 11:22 pm
OOC:
Heh, beat me to it, I was gonna Mage Hand, specially as I can disarm traps at a range with it (though not sure this counts as a disarm trap).
Soliin raises his crossbow and holds a second bolt in hand, getting ready for any aggressive actions.
Jun 20, 2016 11:30 pm

Your Mage Hand might be better in this situation, I would think, as mine can only manipulate objects and I'm not sure if "untying knots" counts.

Soliin decides the crossbow isn't right right now, and points his hands up at the rope above. He falls into deep concentration, and a whispy essence comes out of his hand, only to disappear. He opens his eyes, shakes his head, and closes his eyes again, concentrating. This time, two spectral hands rise up to the rope; as Soliin moves his fingers, the spectral hands move as well. He quickly begins manipulating the rope holding his ally up.

As Mai'ngor is pulled up, his swing goes wide and he doesn't manage to cut the rope. Luckily for him, Soliin was prepared, and in just a few moments, he has the knot undone, dropping Mai'ngor 10 feet to the ground (2 damage).

Mai'ngor stands just as a group of gnomes come around the corner from the tunnel ahead, "Who are you and what do you want here?" one of them asks.
Jun 21, 2016 9:51 pm
"Where are the ratmen?" Elfog asks bluntly.
Jun 22, 2016 8:57 pm
"Ratmen? What do you know about anything?" he snarls at you and his face begins to elongate into a rat's snout and he grunts in pain, then his companions begin to morph as well, "What do you want here? These are our lands!" he says as he finishes, ending in a shape that's almost like a humanoid rat.
Jun 22, 2016 9:16 pm
Compared to the horrors witnessed in the ooze room, the wererats' transformations seemed mundane and almost welcome to Hunter. "We're here to talk," she states. "Parley, negotiate... a civil discussion, if you would be so kind. May we?"
Jun 22, 2016 9:53 pm
To show he really means no harm, Elfog hooks Tolvihar onto his back. "Like me companion says, just wanna talk" he adds, moving back a bit to let one of the other, more skilled, negotiators do the talking.

Soliin hesitates for a second, putting away his crossbow for good, onto a hook by his side for quick retrieval. He steps up just behind Hunter, giving a playful nudge to make sure Hunter's aware he's there.
Jun 23, 2016 4:49 pm
Having regained his composure, Mai'ngor revere his grip on Sinag and plants the sword point-down with his hands resting on the pommel. He hopes this presents enough of a non-aggressive posture even while staying battle-ready. He waits for Hunter to continue the negotiation.
Jun 23, 2016 5:03 pm
"We're listening, but do make it quick!"
Jun 23, 2016 5:17 pm
Hunter clears her throat, as this is probably one of the few times things seem to be going well. For now. "We've come on behalf of Blingdenstone to discuss a... joint partnership in rebuilding the city. May we speak with the Goldwhiskers?"
Jun 23, 2016 7:53 pm
The lead rat-gnome leans in to whisper to the others. After several tense moments he turns back to you, "Follow me, you'll want to speak to Chipgrin," he says and then (assuming you agree) leads you down a couple of tunnels. A short time later you enter into a large chamber, swarming with gnomes.

A small crowd has gathered here. Most of the assembled creatures are deep gnomes, but some have ratlike features - including a fat specimen standing in front of the others, smiling at you with jagged buckteeth. "Peace," the big wererat says. He takes a step forward, arms extended and hands open. "Chipgrin's the name. I'm chief of the Goldwhisker clan. Shall we talk?"
Jun 23, 2016 8:06 pm
The half-elf rests her staff against her shoulder, and repeats the gesture. "I am Hunter," she says. "Thank you for your hospitality; it is welcome in this land full of danger."

Hunter continues. "It is because of such dangers that we have come. We have been asked by the Diggermattocks of Blingdenstone to speak with you in the hopes of combining strength and skill, and restore the city as a welcome and protective place for all."
Jun 24, 2016 4:54 pm
"Let's go somewhere a bit more private, shall we?" he says, then turns and leads you to a plateau in another part of the chamber. Stairs lead to the top of this rise, where the floor is covered with a soft and well-manicured carpet of green moss. The wererat chief sits on a stone chair flanked by two giant rats. Draped over the chair's back is a cave badger pelt.

"I was hoping to get a chance to speak to someone soon. See, we're having a problem here: We're under constant attacks by the oozes that now infest the northern part of the city proper. We've found that they have a leader, a gnomish leader. I remember him from when he worked in the tunnels, and my kin saw him when he returned. I know who he is, what he's doing, and - most of all - where he can be found! If you and the Diggermattocks want, I can take you straight to him - he what calls himself the Pudding King."
Jun 24, 2016 5:00 pm
"You and the Diggermattocks have a common enemy, it seems," says Hunter. "They also expressed concern with the oozes to the north. And your resourcefulness has led to you discover the person behind the problem."

She pauses for a bit. "May I ask a question? If you know who is responsible and have access, why have you not disposed of him yourself? I'm sure the Diggermattocks would look favorably on such an act, especially since it would benefit both parties."
Jun 24, 2016 10:55 pm
A shudder works its way down Elfog's spine, Not the damned oozes again.
Jun 27, 2016 3:49 pm
"Have you seen how many oozes are down there? We know where he is, but we don't have the gnomepower to get in and get the job done. We are few, and everyone of us is valuable in holding what territory we do have."
Jun 27, 2016 4:50 pm
Hunter nods. She absently brushes her hair out of her face and off her shoulder. "The Diggermattocks gave the same reasons. Currently it seems like the two of you are trying to handle the same problem independently. May I suggest a joint venture? I personally would be happy to lend what assistance I can."
Jun 28, 2016 2:56 pm
"Sounds good to me..." he says as you work together to negotiate a time and place for the leaders to meet. You work your way back and forth between the Goldwhiskers and the Diggermattocks and come to an agreement for them to meet the next day at Diggermattock Hall in the morning.
OOC:
400 xp for a successful negotiation!

Another post coming soon!
Jul 1, 2016 1:49 pm
That night you are fed well and housed in an empty residence. The rest is much-needed and you wake up feeling better than you have in weeks. You make your way to the Diggermattock Hall for the meeting to find that you are the last ones there.

In attendance already (you are given introductions to everyone you haven't met yet):

Dorbo and Senni Diggermattock, as representatives for the citizens of Blingdenstone

Nomi Pathshutter and Gurnik Tapfinger, representing the Stoneheart Enclave (religious organization)

Kazook Pickshine, representing the Miner's Guild

Trisk Adamantelpiece and the ghost of Burrow Warden Jagder (quite the shock for you all to see a ghost in attendance!), representing the Burrow Wardens

Chipgrin Goldwhisker, representing the Goldwhisker Clan

After the introductions are over, Dorbo turns to you as a group, "You were the last to enter the caverns containing the oozes. Perhaps you'd like to tell us what you saw down there?"
Jul 1, 2016 4:54 pm
"It was horrible," begins Hunter. "The walls of a great cavern were covered in slime. Dripping, sickening green slime. Dozens of living ooze crawled along the floor, heaving forward and reaching out."

The half-elf uses Prestidigitation to create small illusions depicting what she saw, holding them aloft in her hand. With each statement, she adjusts the illusion to reflect her words.

"In the center of the cavern was a large spherical structure, held up off the floor by stone pillars. It was also covered with slime, black swirls with yellow and grey." Hunter's imagery shifts into a representation of the sphere.

"And finally, there came a voice. I know not from where," Hunter says. She tries to mimic the tone of the voice from the cavern, assisted by Prestidigitation, "It said, 'What's this, what's this? Visitors? Now? Not yet! We're not ready! Go away, pests! I will call upon thee and all of Blingdenstone to announce our glad tidings of the Faceless Lord to come at the proper time! Begone!'"

Hunter lowers her hand, and the images fade.
Jul 1, 2016 5:06 pm
"Ye could have stopped at 'It was horrible'" Elfog grunts as a shudder runs down his spine.

Mai'ngor almost laughs at Elfog's remark, had a chill not run up his spine as well at the horrible memory of the oozes.
Jul 5, 2016 6:52 pm
The others take everything in stride, and Chipgrin speaks as you mention the voice, "That must be the one controlling the oozes speaking."

Dorbo responds, "Sounds like it. If we can take care of him, the attacks may stop, but the forces arrayed against us are far too much to handle. We're going to need some additional assistance. The addition of the Goldwhiskers are a great boon to us already, as they're already hardier than most due to their gift," he says diplomatically.

Nomi Pathshutter speaks up in reverent tones, "If we could find Entemoch's Boon, we could summon a host of earth elementals to aid in the reclamation of the city," she turns to you newcomers and continues, "Entemoch's Boon is a sacred chamber somewhere outside the city that empowers any elemental summoned through it."

"Any elemental brought in could be corrupted by Ogremoch's Bane in the battle. It would be disastrous if they turned on us halfway through the fight," Gurnik Tapfinger warns, "If we could cleanse the Steadfast Stone, then we could banish Ogremoch's Bane and we'd be free of that possibility."

"I can trade for some higher quality weapons from Gracklstugh. Perhaps better weapons will stand up to the oozes, since most of what we got corrodes on contact with the bastards," Kazook Pickshine offers.
OOC:
I will give you all a bit of time to offer your input at this point before I continue to push things along.
Jul 5, 2016 7:11 pm
Hunter asks, "Ogremoch's Bane?" She has follow-up questions regarding Entemoch's Boon and the Steadfast Stone, but it seems this Bane may be at the root of the perceived risk in the gnomes' plan.
Jul 5, 2016 7:22 pm
"Ogremoch's Bane is a cloud of malevolent energy that resides in Inner Blingdenstone. It has the ability to corrupt any elementals that we summon and turn them against us," Gurnik explains.
OOC:
Entemoch: The good prince of Elemental Earth
Ogremoch: The evil prince of Elemental Earth
Jul 5, 2016 7:27 pm
"And the Steadfast Stone?" asks Hunter. It is a leading question to determine what must be done to cleanse the... item, she supposes.
Jul 5, 2016 9:52 pm
"I'm be favoring any thing that would help against that ooze! Point us to that boon and let's get at it." Elfog offers, eager to gain any help he can to deal with the slime.
Jul 6, 2016 3:53 am
"Any reason we can't do both? Get rid of the stuff makin' the ol' Elementals go bad and find whatever will boost them?"
Jul 6, 2016 12:58 pm
Mai'ngor nods. "I agree with Soliin. Cannot we do both?"
Jul 6, 2016 1:38 pm
"So now we're cleaning a rock and then tracking down a special summoning room?" I rub my eyes.
Jul 6, 2016 1:43 pm
"First, the Steadfast Stone must be cleansed, then we can banish Ogremoch's Bane. I will give you the tools you will need if you'd like to attempt this task. First you will need a specially enchanted ruby that I will provide to you, then you will have to make your way to the Stone and insert the ruby into a socket in the menhir there, which will begin the cleansing process. The corruption there may try to interfere, so you should be prepared for a fight," he explains, giving you a moment to digest the information before continuing, "Now, once the stone is cleansed, I imaging Ogremoch's Bane will soon show up to begin corrupting it again, so I will provide you will a scroll of banishment, which should rid us of the troublesome thing for good. Be wary, if it doesn't work, then you will need to flee quickly."
Jul 6, 2016 3:27 pm
"Alright, sounds like a fine plan. I'll do it! Where's this ruby?"
Jul 6, 2016 4:43 pm
"Just so we're adequately prepared," begins Hunter, "what sort of 'corruption' are you talking about?"
Jul 6, 2016 10:32 pm
"As long as it ain't ooze..." Elfog says quietly to Hunter.
Jul 7, 2016 8:10 pm
"I hold the ruby with me now. The corruption I speak of comes from Ogremoch's Bane, twisting the power of the elements. I can't say what manner of trouble it will throw your way, but I am confident you can handle it."
Jul 7, 2016 8:17 pm
"Ogremoch's Bane is an earth elemental?" Hunter asks, seeking confirmation. She fights to keep her eyes from narrowing and rolling at Gurnik's 'confidence.'

I scratch my head and attempt to recall anything I may have heard about this 'bane'...

Jul 7, 2016 9:33 pm
Elfog tilts his head to the left, cracking his neck. He then tilts his head to the right, repeating the procedure. "Elementals I can handle. Nice and solid they be!"
Jul 7, 2016 10:19 pm
"I'll take the ruby and keep it safe until we need to use it." I want to feast my eyes on it. If this whole cleansing thing doesn't work out and we're doomed at least I'll have that to hold onto.
Jul 7, 2016 10:58 pm
Hunter looks at Xeliss and nods. "That may be a good idea. Ogremoch's Bane is likely going to focus on the ruby and the person who carries it, as it is the key to the whole process."
Jul 8, 2016 6:19 pm
"Who would like the scroll then? Is there a wizardly type among you?"
Jul 8, 2016 6:30 pm
"A scroll, too?" says Hunter, not expecting yet another piece of the ritual. Svirfneblin.

Hunter collects herself. "I have some arcane talent," she announces.
Jul 11, 2016 3:10 pm
He hands the scroll over to Hunter, "Now that you have it here's what you must do: Go to the Steadfast Stone and insert the ruby into the menhir there. This will begin the cleansing process, watch for any unwelcome visitors. If Ogremoch's Bane shows up, then use the scroll of banishment on it and it should remove it from our plane of existence."

He gives instructions to the Stone (area 22):
Go to the guard post in Area 10, follow the path to the old residences (area 17) and follow the path northeast through the Crystal Garden (19) and to the Stone (22).

"Be wary when you are out there. There have been reports of a Medusa in the area, though Sark in the guard post may offer a reward if you bring back the thing's head as proof of its demise."

I take a good look at the ruby before pocketing it. "A medusa you say? Great."
Jul 12, 2016 2:04 pm
"Sarith is on another assignment, looking for Entemoch's Boon," Dorbo replies.

"I'll distract it from afar if that's alright with you. If it goes to hell, we drop the ruby in there and run."
Jul 14, 2016 3:53 pm
"Fear not, Soliin. If Xeliss fails to grab the thing's attention then I will make sure it comes after me. And once you have the bag over the head then Elfog and I will make sure to part it with its neck." Mai’ngor says, drawing his finger across his own neck to demonstrate.

Speaking to the guard outside, you are given 200 gold as a group.
Jul 15, 2016 11:08 pm
I gladly take the gold from the guard. "It's not much, but it's a start." I turn to our group members. "What supplies?"
Jul 15, 2016 11:17 pm
Hunter repeats, "A mirror. Or two mirrors. If a medusa's gaze is enough to turn us into stone, perhaps the same is true of itself. Like deflecting an arrow back at the person who fired it."

After a pause, "Honestly, I don't know if that works, but I reason that if a medusa is looking at itself, it's not looking at me."

Jul 18, 2016 4:49 pm
Mai'ngor's peers at the object. It's like looking at one's reflection in a well-polished shield, but a little better. Or like looking at one's reflection in a pond, but nowhere near as good. "You propose to use this to avoid looking directly at the medusa? Interesting. We approach the monster walking backwards then?"
Jul 18, 2016 4:57 pm

Soliin puts his new bag in his current bag and laughs. "Look, a bag with another bag inside! A bag of holding bags!"
Jul 20, 2016 5:06 am
Hunter pauses. She regards Soliin quizzically in silence, then says, "You know, I can't remember the last time I heard a natural laugh."

She half-chuckles to herself at the wondrous mirth of halflings, and even that sound feels strange to her ears. "Thanks," she says and straightens her back, ready to proceed.
Jul 21, 2016 4:08 pm
You are led to the guard post in area 10 (the guard captain does indeed offer a reward: 1,000 gp for the beasts head, or 50 gp each for useful information). They open the door, which leads to a small passage with another door. The door opens to reveal a Y-passage, splitting off to the north and east. To the north, the passage is collapsed, leaving only one direction for you to go.

You follow the passage to the east and enter a chamber that is very reminiscent of the residential area of the occupied portion of Blingdenstone. Every step echoes against walls beyond your circle of light. The air is cold and damp, and you can hear a waterfall somewhere in the blackness, along with faint echoes of battle.

Their is a staircase leading north, which you recognize from the directions that Dorbo gave you to the Stone you need to cleanse. There is the sound of a waterfall in the distance to your east, but you can't see it in the blackness.
Jul 21, 2016 4:22 pm
As they move forward, Soliin creeps along to the side, just within range of the torch light, keeping his eyes, ears, and all other senses open to the sound of something that might sound or look like a medusa, though he doesn't know what a medusa might sound or look like. I gotta figure out some way I can move about down here without the group, without shedding light.

OOC:
Hunter is, only because he's a survivor that endured with the rest of the group. Admittedly, there were times he sorta tried to save his own skin when the odds were bad, but he got his blades into the thick of things often enough that Hunter would at least want Sarith to have a decent life afterward.
Jul 26, 2016 4:46 pm
"Come on," says Hunter, starting off to the east. "If it's Sarith, he might need our help, and maybe he can help us if his task is done. If it's not Sarith, whoever it is may be inclined to offer us aid in return."

The group heads east, coming closer and closer to the sound of the waterfall, though the battle sounds no nearer. When you near the end of the chamber, you can see a large pool which is fed by a waterfall pouring from a ledge above. On either side of the pool are rough-hewn stone staircases leading up to the ledge above. There are also passages leading both north and south not far from the pool.

After a few moments of looking he can see a face in the water with its eyes closed. Suddenly, the eyes open wide and it rushes toward the surface. Elfog barely has time to pull back before it comes out of the water (though it doesn't disturb the water at all) and lands in front of him. Sinag hums with pleasure as it pierces the ghostly form of the gnome, This is what I was forged for! the thoughts stream from Sinag to Mai'ngor and bring him immense pleasure.

Hunter's magical assault causes the ghost to blur and fade momentarily as its very essence is attacked.

Tolvihar rips into the ghost's form and it screams again, this time in pain.

The ghostly figure shouts out, "They are coming! We must hide!" then turns and rushes into a nearby residence.
Jul 28, 2016 7:25 pm
"Let's get out of here!" cries Hunter, going so far as to pull on the clothing of any who seem stuck to the floor. She heads back to the passageway leading to the Crystal Garden. "The sounds of battle we heard may be the event that created these ghosts!"
Jul 28, 2016 8:07 pm
OOC:
You're referring to the first passage you encountered, correct?
Jul 28, 2016 8:14 pm
OOC:
Yes. On the map, leading to area 19.
Jul 28, 2016 8:29 pm
You move up into the Crystal Garden. Light from luminescent fungi refracts through large crystal formations erupting from the floor, creating a kaleidoscope of colors on the surrounding walls. The crystals are semitransparent, slightly distorting images seen through them. A statue of a gnome cowers near a crystal outgrowth, holding a broken crystal in its hands.

Tunnels lead up to area 20 and down into area 21. Two sets of stairs carved from the walls lead up to the Steadfast Stone.
Jul 28, 2016 8:42 pm
Hunter pauses to catch her breath. She eyes the gnome statue and its peculiar pose, and checks that her mirrors are within easy reach; the notion of medusae certainly lends itself to the imagination.
Jul 29, 2016 11:48 pm
Eyes fixated on the gnome statue Elfog moves up besides Hunter. "Statue or victim?" he asks without breaking his gaze.
Jul 30, 2016 12:09 am
Deadpan, Hunter responds, "Yes."
Jul 30, 2016 12:26 am
Unsure what to make of Hunter's response Elfog simply offers, "Aye!"
Jul 30, 2016 12:38 am
"Wh-What's happened?" I follow the others in a daze as I try to shake the terrifying fear I experienced just a moment ago. Suddenly, this entire plan seems like a bad idea.

Soliin nods in the shadows, unsure if anyone can see him, and holds his bag out ahead of himself, chuckling silently to himself. He starts to move forward, staying just within the torch light.
Aug 3, 2016 12:47 pm
As you ascend the stairs, the hissing doesn't come any closer and after a few steps you can no longer hear it. You reach the top of the stairs, it seems you've found the Steadfast Stone. The floor of this cavern is worn smooth, but the walls are rough. A great menhir carved from a stalagmite stands in the center of the chamber, pockmarked with dozens of empty sockets that might once have held gems.

Elfog, with his familiarity with caverns and excellent low-light vision, is able to see that the roughness of the walls in this chamber outline several large, vaguely humanoid shapes.
Aug 3, 2016 1:00 pm
I shrink down to the form of a spider, climbing up and clinging to the side of the rock wall.
Aug 3, 2016 4:33 pm
Hunter sighs in relief, tempered by the fact that it's always calm before a storm. "All right, there's the stone. Let's get that gem in place."

She looks around. "Xeliss? Where did...?" Her expression turns to horror as she imagines the worst. "Oh no, did she get lost?"
Aug 3, 2016 7:50 pm

"The walls?" asks Hunter, in a near-panic. "What about Xeliss? She has the gem!"
Aug 4, 2016 1:57 am
"What?! I thought you had it! Where has she gone off to this time?"

"Perhaps some light?" Mai’ngor summons Sinag's blade.
Aug 4, 2016 6:14 pm
Xeliss, in spider form, moves completely unnoticed by her companions who all worry for her safety.

Elfog thinks that these humanoid shapes were once Earth Elementals that fused with the stone.
Aug 5, 2016 12:44 am
"She would not just run off, and I'm sure we would have heard some hollering if something tried to get the lass" Elfog says.

"Keep yer eyes on these walls. I don't think they're carvings..." he adds before telling everyone that the may in fact be earth elementals.

I revert to my usual self and shove the gem into one of the holes on the right side, as far up as I can reach.
Aug 10, 2016 7:33 pm
The gem slides in smoothly and as the ruby begins to glow against the menhir, the walls begin to rumble. Part of one wall shifts, detaches, and charges toward you. One of the earth elementals that Elfog noticed earlier has awakened and doesn't like what you're doing here.
OOC:
Got a one on the elemental's initiative, so you all go first!

Not terribly surprised by what he's seeing Elfog jumps into action. Taking a few steps towards to the elemental to gain a bit of momentum he leaps into the air (well, as much as a dwarf can leap) and brings Tolvihar across his body, looking to cut the elemental's leg clean through.

Elfog swings Tolvihar hard, slamming it into the thick, rocky leg. It causes some cracks in the stone, but doesn't seem to affect its mobility at all.

Mai'ngor flies into battle, attacking fiercely with Sinag, and the light-blade digs two deep gouges in the monster's rocky hide.

Electricity arcs around the elemental as Hunter's magic takes hold and it lets out a deep rumble, a sign of pain perhaps?

After the creature falls, another large stone creature emerges from the ground by the menhir, but doesn't attack. It merely faces away from the stone and assumes a guarding pose.

Reckless attack gives you advantage on all attacks
Quote:
Starting at 2nd level, you can throw aside all concern for defense to attack with fierce desperation. When you make your first attack on your turn, you can decide to attack recklessly. Doing so gives you advantage on melee weapon attack rolls using Strength during this turn, but attack rolls against you have advantage until your next turn.

Hunter's magic slams into the stone monstrosity just as Elfog slams Tolvihar into its leg, taking it out and dropping it, one-legged, to the floor. It doesn't get back up.

Another one of the stone men comes out of the floor and faces out from the menhir. Moments later a familiar scene plays out and the last elemental explodes outward from the wall. This one is faster than the others and makes it to you before you can turn to face it. It swings once at Mai'ngor and kicks at Xeliss.

Xeliss manages to get out of its way, but Mai'ngor takes a hit in the side (16 damage).

Feeling drained by her magical onslaught, Hunter's next spell seems to be slightly less effective than the ones before. It's pretty clear that she's almost completely out of energy.

Tolvihar slams in again and again. Elfog, amusingly, looks like he's trying to fell a particularly stubborn tree. Thankfully, dwarves are as just as stubborn as stone and he seems to be winning the fight, chunks of the things legs shattering and falling to the ground.

"Maybe," says Hunter, leaning on her staff. The weight of her pack and from the constant battle finally pulls her to the ground, sliding to her knees. "There is still the threat of Ogremoch's Bane. Anyone see a cloud of malevolent energy?"

In a low sotto voce, Hunter adds, "Besides the one above my head?"
Aug 22, 2016 3:43 pm
About two minutes after the death of the last elemental, you feel strange. Looking up, you see a silvery cloud floating up the stairs, moving slowly and reaching hungrily for the Steadfast Stone.
Aug 22, 2016 4:59 pm
Hunter had spent much of her waiting on the ground at rest. As the odd sensation washes over her, she withdraws the scroll given to her by the svirfneblin. "I think it's here," she whispers, and unfurls the scroll to begin her preparations.
Aug 22, 2016 9:20 pm
Grabbing Tolvihar in both hands as he hears Hunter's announcement, Elfog springs to his feet and faces the silvery cloud. Not sure what me axe can do to a cloud he thinks, but seems determined to find out.

As the cloud of energy approaches the Stone, Hunter continues casting from the scroll, Once she finishes, a bright glow appears in the center of the cloud and begins growing and growing and then opens into a portal that sucks the cloud into it and then the room is silent. You get the feeling that this would probably be a safe place to rest, but you can never be too sure in the underdark.

"If we're going to rest, maybe we need to keep watch?" Soliin stretches as he looks at his companions. "I could keep my eyes open a bit, and don't worry, if there's trouble, I'll run away only after I shout really loud."

Aug 29, 2016 5:05 pm
Soliin made his Medusa finding position clear... why else did he buy a bag?
Aug 29, 2016 6:16 pm
"Does anyone think the medusa will try and sabotage the menhir?" Hunter asks. "I admit, we've fulfilled our task, but I worry that our battle against the ooze won't go well if something happens here."
Aug 30, 2016 4:33 pm
"Beats me. You really want to go looking for that thing?"
Aug 30, 2016 5:00 pm
"Honestly? No," admits Hunter, casting a glance at the petrified crystal garden ornament off to the side. "But if the menhir was corrupted once before, it can be again. I'd rather have an army of elementals that would fight for us, not against. Maybe those guardians are immune to the medusa's gaze? I don't know."
Aug 30, 2016 9:55 pm
"Not a bad idea, Hunter" Elfog says. "'dusa would be hard pressed to fight something that already be stone." He motions towards Soliin and adds with a chuckle "Plus the little one did spend good coin on a bag. Let him have his go if he's wanting"

Mai'ngor nods. "How can we use those guardians? Surely, we cannot command nor control them?"
Aug 31, 2016 7:13 am
"Maybe we don't use them, per se," says Hunter. "My guess is that they'll attempt to stop anyone that approaches the stone. The question is, do we trust these guardians to withstand a medusa's power?"
Aug 31, 2016 11:25 am
"As they're already stone, they can't become more stone, right? But she could freeze them in place."
Aug 31, 2016 3:11 pm
"So are you proposing we lure it here and let the guardians fight it?"
Aug 31, 2016 3:20 pm
Soliin looks down and kicks some rocks. "I'm not sure... I've never seen a medula before, so I'm not sure how best to face it. I'm admittedly just worried that each obstacle in our way to get out of here will come to bite us, or in this case, turn us to stone, later."
Aug 31, 2016 4:15 pm
"A part of me thinks the same," says Hunter in response to Soliin's words. She straightens her back, wincing a bit at the dull aches that are starting to form. "I know not what to propose. A medusa is a strange creature that I know little about, save for whatever is whispered in legend and rumor. To be honest, I'm afraid of it, but I also fear what might happen if we leave it alone at such a dangerous time."
Aug 31, 2016 10:14 pm
"What does it take to lure one of these 'dusas into a trap? Any ideas?"
Sep 2, 2016 7:04 pm
Hunter shakes her head. "I'd imagine it is no mere beast to be tempted with food, but sadly I do not know."

Xeliss isn't able to pry the crystal out of the gnomes rocky hand, but there are an abundance of them scattered about the ground, more than enough for each of you to take one if you wish.

Soliin leads the way toward the hissing he heard earlier, ascending the steps quietly and peering into the chamber beyond, which is lightly lit by luminous fungi. The adornment in the chamber would be more at home in a drow city. Spider-themed tapestries, fine zurkhwood furniture, and racks of expensive clothing fill the area, all of it old and rotted. At the center of the chamber, a female drow sits upon a zurkhwood throne.
Sep 6, 2016 8:15 pm
Hunter follows Soliin, though well behind given her minimal magical power. As the group enters the chamber, her hand immediately goes to retrieve her mirror. I transform into my brown bear form, only realizing a moment too late that I've made myself the biggest target. Too late to change my mind now! I follow Elfog's lead and charge that dromedusa, clawing and biting at its lower torso.

Xeliss bear-rushes the medusa, biting and clawing savagely. She manages to dig her teeth deep into the things side.

Mai'ngor begins to feel his legs get heavier and finds that he can't move them. Looking down, he sees that they are beginning to turn to stone.

Xeliss looks away from the creature, successfully avoiding its gaze, but leaving herself unable to see it for now.

Hunter's magic continues shocking the medusa, who appears to be becoming more and more agitated by it.

Elfog continues his attacks on the monster, scoring a couple more solid hits.

Mai'ngor calls upon his innate magic to close the distance and makes a couple valiant attacks on the monster. His first strike removes an arm, and his next cuts it in half, bisecting it at the waist. As he finishes his blow, he completes his transformation into a statue, face locked into a look of determination.

Creeping up behind the Medusa, Soliin holds a bag wide open as ghostly hands come out of his, carrying the bag to the Medusa. As he moves to place it over her head, he looks sullen as she's cleaved in half. His mockingly disheartened look turns real as he notices his friend frozen in stone. Slipping the bag over the beasts head, in case, he quickly turns to his friends. "Who's fastest? I'll stay here if necessary."

Hilariously, I realized just now that the Medusa never actually took its turn lol

Oh well, no biggie!

Breathing heavy after his attacks Elfog looks over to Soliin, "I'll stay and guard Mai'ngor, you and others should head back for help. I'm not much for moving quick right now anyhow." Taking a seat on the floor in front of his stoned friend he looks over at the dead monster and then over his shoulder at Mai'ngor. "If this is the end for him, at least he went out fighting!"
Sep 8, 2016 10:59 pm
Hunter prepares to head back to Blingdenstone and seek help for the fey horse warrior.
Sep 9, 2016 10:47 pm
"Help it is. Maybe they've got some kind of wagon we can use to carry him back to town..." Normally I wouldn't stick my neck out like this, but that fight was kinda scary. What if it had been me that got turned into a statue? They wouldn't leave me behind. At least... I don't think they would. We gotta look out for one another down here or we're done. "Who else is coming?"

Hunter is nearly out of the chamber in her haste, but she checks herself. There is value in traveling these caverns as a group. She waits for the others and calls out, "I am coming, too."
Sep 12, 2016 4:06 pm
Everyone but Mai'ngor and Elfog head back to the main city, and are stopped at the guard post by Sark, the one who put the bounty on the Medusa, "How'd things go out there? Kill that stone-cold bitch?" he asks, then chuckles at his little joke.
OOC:
Knowing that he'd want the proof, would you have brought the head back?
Sep 12, 2016 4:37 pm
"You'll get your proof later," snaps Hunter. "Right now we need to see Lord Diggermattock, or anyone, a cleric, that can restore our companion."
OOC:
Hunter had other things on her mind than the medusa's head.
Sep 12, 2016 5:07 pm
Sark looks confused at the hostility for a moment, then realizes what you said. A hard look comes over his face, "Get a priest!" he shouts at one of the other guards, who immediately runs off to find someone to help.
Sep 13, 2016 12:14 pm
Soliin dashes off with the guard, to make sure whomever is coming knows what they're coming to help with.
Sep 13, 2016 12:15 pm
"Should have bought potions before we left. Prepared more..."
Sep 13, 2016 4:53 pm
Soliin and the runner soon return with a pair of priests. They nod politely, but waste no time, "Lead the way. The longer he is cursed, the harder it will be to reverse!"

The follow the group back to the Medusa's chamber and immediately begin setting up; Lighting candles, drawing rune circles around the petrified Tikbalang, and offering prayers to their gods. It takes a couple of hours of tense waiting, but eventually Mai'ngor stumbles forward and falls to his knees, gasping for air.

The priests takes shuddering breaths, "You were deep in the throes of the medusa's curse, but I've never heard of it being so hard to break... Something is wrong with the magic of the Underdark..."
Sep 13, 2016 5:10 pm
Hunter seems to shrink, visibly relaxing from her tensed posture. She wipes her clammy hands on her robes and breathes a sigh of relief. "Let's get out of here," she says. "We can figure out what's wrong in the comfort of a warm fire. Mai'ngor, you had the killing blow; if you like, you can have the honor of presenting the medusa's head to the guard."
Sep 13, 2016 5:33 pm
Mai'ngor, still on his knees collecting himself, is just glad to be alive. He looks at Hunter with gratitude for her gesture, but wordlessly waves the medusa head away.
Sep 13, 2016 11:13 pm
Slapping Mai'ngor on the back as he passes by Elfog quips, "Glad to have ye back. Weren't much use to us as a statue."
Sep 14, 2016 5:59 pm

Most of the things in here are rotted beyond real usefulness, but there are five of the silk dresses on the rack that appear to be in very good condition and may be worth a lot of money.
Sep 14, 2016 8:04 pm
Looking around at the squalor, Soliin shrugs and packs the 5 dresses into his main bag.
Sep 19, 2016 5:25 pm
The party is led back to the meeting chamber, with the representatives of the varios factions still in attendance. As you enter, all heads turn to look at you, obviously in anticipation of the news you bring. Gurnik stands, "Well, how did it go? Is the stone cleansed?".
Sep 19, 2016 5:42 pm
Hunter nods. "We placed the gem in one of the spaces upon the menhir, and used the scroll to banish Ogremoch's Bane. The stone now seems to be guarded by three rock-like creatures, though we had to fend off several earth elementals in the process." The half-elf does not feel the need to offer more detail unless questioned, and the dark circles under her eyes reflect her mental exhaustion.
Sep 19, 2016 9:40 pm
Elfog, arms folded across his chest, looks towards Hunter as she answers Gurnik. He then quickly turns his stare to those assembled and awaits their reaction.
Sep 20, 2016 5:20 pm
You can all sense some of the tension ease out of the room and they breathe a collective sigh of relief.

"Wonderful! You have greatly aided in the effort to take back control of Blingdenstone proper and we cannot thank you enough, Dorbo says gratefully, "Once this is over, we will ensure that you find your way back to the surface world. Now, if Sarith proves half as competent as we think him to be, he should be back soon with news of Entemoch's Boon. Now, you may take some time to rest up, we will have need of you soon, I am sure."

With that, you are led to a series of rooms in a quiet corner of the residential area of Blingdenstone.

Sep 20, 2016 8:37 pm
Hunter is easily able to find Stool's lodging (Hint: She's sharing it with him by his request), and is able to learn that the Diggermattocks do indeed know the location of Neverlight Grove and will be happy to get him an escort back there when this is all done and over with.
Sep 20, 2016 8:47 pm
Satisfied with the answer, Hunter retires to the room, flops on the bed (even if it's made of stone), and releases her mental concentration on wakefulness.
Sep 20, 2016 10:17 pm
Lumbering into his room, Elfog places Tolvihar within arms reach on his bed, as he lays himself flat on his back. Hands locked behind his head he slowly drifts off to sleep.
Sep 24, 2016 7:35 pm
Mai'ngor takes what rest he can, but thinks long and hard about his brush with death. He toys with his sky-stone keepsake and decides to visit this Gurnik Tapfinger at the Speaking Stones that Dorbo mentioned. Upon reaching this decision the tikbaang warrior falls into a fitful slumber without dismissing Sinag, the sword's blade bathing the room in warm, reassuring light.
Sep 26, 2016 6:32 pm
You wake up the next morning, feeling much refreshed.

Mai'ngor heads to the Speaking Stones and finds Gurnik praying with a couple of grieving gnomes who apparently just lost a son. It takes a few minutes, but they are soon on their way out and he turns to look at you, "Mai'ngor, is it? What can I do for you today?"
Sep 26, 2016 6:51 pm
I turn into my wolf form and curl into a ball on the floor in the corner of my room and stay there until morning. When I wake, I spend some time communing with nature, or what little of it I can feel around me. The strange forces we have encountered have left me feeling unsettled.
Sep 26, 2016 7:20 pm
"Dorbo Diggermatock said you might be able to help me learn something of this," Mai'ngor says, producing the sky-rock fragment. "I took it from a burning stone that fell from the sky. My entire village died of a wasting sickness afterward."
Sep 26, 2016 7:22 pm
Gurnik's eyes pop open wide as Mai'ngor produces the stone, "May I hold it?" he asks, hesitantly holding his hand out to take it.
Sep 26, 2016 8:35 pm
Mai'ngor hands Gurnik the stone fragment.
Sep 27, 2016 11:44 pm
He takes the stone piece and looks it over for a little while, "Would you mind if I help onto this for a few days? I've never seen anything like if before and think that if I commune with the agents of my God, I could possibly figure out what it is."
Sep 28, 2016 7:24 am
Hunter spends her morning tidying up herself through a combination of rote practice and copious castings of Prestidigitation. This was the first decent rest she's had where she didn't have to sleep with one eye open, having come to trust the svirfneblin community, and she was going to enjoy the opportunity to look after herself for a bit.

Once her morning preparations are complete, Hunter sees what passes for breakfast in Blingdenstone.
Sep 28, 2016 2:40 pm
Mai'ngor hesitates, reluctant to leave his most important memento from home in the hands of someone he has just met. He eyes the metallic stone dhard glinting in the dim light. Finally, the tikbalang nods. "I entrust it to your wise and capable care." He bows to Gurnik respectfully, fighting the urge to take the stone back and run.
Sep 28, 2016 6:43 pm
Mai'ngor
Gurnik nods, "Do not worry, I will keep it safe," he says, tucking the rock into a pocket on his robes. "Was there anything else that I could do for you this day?"

Hunter
Hunter is able to find that meals are being provided to them for free. This morning it is a cave lizard steak (must've come from a BIG cave lizard) with buttered mushrooms and water.

Xeliss
The Underdark feels even more unnatural than normal, as if something has pierced through the magic that emanates strongly from the stone all around you.
Sep 28, 2016 7:03 pm
Having gone so long without such a hearty feast, Hunter takes her time to enjoy it.
Sep 30, 2016 4:02 pm
The next day, you are called to the council chamber once again to meet with the various faction leaders. As you enter the chamber, you see all of the normal leaders, surrounding a speaking to a taller figure you quickly recognize as Sarith. The leaders are so preoccupied by speaking to the drow that they don't seem to notice you entering the chamber.
Sep 30, 2016 5:08 pm
Hunter remains where she is at the entrance to the council chamber, to let the elders finish their discussion.
Sep 30, 2016 9:18 pm
"A sight I'd never thought I'd lay me eyes on." Elfog says, nudging Hunter as he motions towards Sarith.

Gurnik nods, "Do not worry, I will keep it safe," he says, tucking the rock into a pocket on his robes. "Was there anything else that I could do for you this day?"
"Is this a temple? What gods do the gnomes honor?" Mai'ngor asks Gurnik, genuinely curious.
Oct 3, 2016 1:18 pm
"Yes, this is a temple. These stone have been here since before Blingdenstone was built. They are believed to be ancient Galeb Duhr, manifestations of our gods' powers," he explains, clearly happy to have found an outsider so interested in their religion, "Our patron god is Callarduran Smoothhands, lord of the Earth. We, of course, worship all of the gnome gods, but he is the one who watches over us down here among our many enemies."
Oct 3, 2016 1:59 pm
Mai'ngor approaches and reaches out to one of the Galeb Duhr, but hesitates, unsure if it is permitted to touch one. He looks to the priest questioningly.
Oct 3, 2016 2:04 pm
Gurnik nods and smiles encouragingly at Mai'ngor.
Oct 3, 2016 4:12 pm
Mai'ngor touches his hand to the stone, running his palm over its rough surface.

"I am from the surface but my people also believed that stone lives. Do these stones speak to you? What do they say?"

"They do speak to us, yes, when the earth is quiet enough for us to hear them, Gurnik says, a look of wonder and sadness in his eyes, "They tell us of a time before the 'intelligent' races started hurting the earth so much... it's a very sad song to hear."
Oct 3, 2016 6:09 pm
Mai'ngor nods. "It is...was... much the same with our people. The spirits of the wind, the river, the trees...they spoke and sang to us of a more peaceful world. A world long gone, I'm afraid." Mai'ngor removes his hand from the menhir but his gaze lingers on the rock for a few moments more before turning to Gurnik. "I thank you, Gurnik, for this honor. If my companions and I are to remain in Blingdenstone much longer, would like t visit here again if I may."
Oct 3, 2016 6:10 pm
"You are welcome here at any time, honorable warrior," Gurnik says with a wide smile, a touch of sadness behind his eyes, but mixed with a powerful determination, "Whatever may come, I wish you well."
Oct 3, 2016 6:30 pm
"I will surely be back to reclaim my keepsake. I hope then you will be able to shed some light on is origins. Farewell for now." Mai'ngor goes to rejoin the rest of the party.
Oct 4, 2016 3:41 pm
Back to the next day!

You all stand around for a moment as the gnomes swarm Sarith, who looks over you and shrugs, obviously a bit amused by it all. After a minute or two of answering questions, Sarith clears his throat and points at your small group. The gnomes look at you and smile, Gurnik giving Mai'ngor a small nod.

"Ah, we've got good news this morning!" Dorbo says, nodding to Sarith, "I'll let our new drow friend here tell you."

Sarith nods, "As you may be aware, I served as an scout in the tunnels for years, so I know how to find things. Our new friends," it seems for a moment that he struggles with the unfamiliar word, "asked me to go out and look for Entemoch's Boon, an ancient gnomish holy place where they can summon the most powerful of earth elementals."

He stops for a moment to allow you to digest this information, then continues "I have found it, and just returned maybe an hour ago. Once they've set up there and begun their summoning, they say they will initiate battle with the slimes."
Oct 4, 2016 4:00 pm
Mai'ngor raises an eyebrow, more amused than anything by the drow's sudden and improbable popularity.
Oct 4, 2016 4:14 pm
Seeing the raised eyebrow, Sarith shrugs. It appears that he is just as confused as you are!
Oct 4, 2016 10:10 pm
"Well done, Drow!" Elfog offers with a hint of respect, silently thinking how devastated his clan members would be to hear him say such a thing.

"I'd be more than happy to follow a couple of those stony fellas into battle!"
Oct 5, 2016 12:18 am
Hunter nods. "I am glad to see you well, Sarith," she says, "and glad to hear that things are progressing smoothly. What other preparations need to be made before addressing this slime lord?"
Oct 5, 2016 4:04 pm
"Of course, back to business!" Dorbo says, calming down (but only slightly) enough to begin planning again, "We are going to have Sarith escort a group of our finest priests to Entemoch's Boon and summon as many elementals as our gods will grant us to defeat the slime menace. You are, of course, free to stay here or go with them."

"Once they return, we will launch our attack," Senni says, "It should give us plenty of time to coat our weapons in oils to resist the effects of the slime's corrosion."
Oct 5, 2016 5:55 pm
As if in a daze from forever, Soliin apparently snaps awake. "Are there traps we can set of any sort? I assume these oozes aren't immune to boulders being dropped on them?"
Oct 5, 2016 9:57 pm
"I'll head out with the Drow and the priests." Elfog says. "Wanna get me eyes on a couple of them elementals being called up!"
Oct 5, 2016 10:17 pm
"Should we all go?" asks Hunter.
Oct 5, 2016 11:03 pm
Hunter nods. She turns to one of the attendants and asks that during the assault, she be positioned in the back with the ranged attackers; her spells and crossbow would prove more effective there than up front.
Oct 6, 2016 12:39 am
Uneasy, but wanting to see the elementals for myself, I nod and follow the others near the front.
Oct 6, 2016 1:19 pm
"Yeah, they die the same as anything else," Dorbo responds to Soliin, "just be careful what you hit them with, they seem to be able to eat through weapons and armor that aren't magical."

"Well, if you're ready, we leave in 30 minutes..."

Oct 6, 2016 5:04 pm
Hunter asks for another case of 20 crossbow bolts, to bring her total amount of ammunition to 40. She does not want to be without defense when her energy runs out, especially against a horde of ooze.
Oct 6, 2016 11:27 pm
Elfog, confident that Tolvihar will be able to handle the upcoming battle unscathed, crosses his arms in front of his chest while the others make their purchases.

"What if ya were to light some of those bolts aflame before firing 'em into the oozies?"
Oct 7, 2016 12:44 am
"A fascinating idea," says Hunter. If possible, she finds an attendant to relay the suggestion to those in command, and if accepted to include her ammunition in any coatings of flammable oil.
Oct 7, 2016 3:28 am
Soliin begins mumbling to himself... "They're kind of slug-like... maybe a giant bag of salt?..."

"Blingdenstone is certainly efficient," admires Hunter. "Is this what it's like when a city prepares for battle?" She is ready to follow Sarith and the svirfneblin priests.
Oct 10, 2016 5:59 pm
You set out from Blingdenstone with a group of four priests and a dozen warriors, all that the city could spare from its defenses. The caverns you travel through are strangely quiet. You'd guess that very few creatures want to tangle with almost two dozen armed warriors.

Sarith leads the group expertly through the tunnels; even knowing his path from memory, the march is slow and boring, constantly having to watch for danger, climb walls that Sarith circumvented with his levitation abilities, and the constant stopping for prayers. It takes nearly two days to get there at that pace.

Sarith finally leads you up to a small, nearly invisible pathway leading up high along the wall and through a small opening. You enter a large chamber, a large number of stalactites and stalagmites cover the floor and ceiling, and you can see a large rune circle, glowing with a faint light in the center of the chamber. A sense of peace and safety wash over you in the presence of the gnome god's holy place.

The gnomes all stand and stare in awe, but only for a moment as their sense of duty takes over and the fighters fan out to make sure the chamber is secure and the priests sit in front of the circle and pray.
Oct 10, 2016 6:05 pm
For lack of anything to do, Hunter assists with establishing a small camp under the direction of the gnomes. She also maintains a watch, paying careful attention to the ceiling lest something approach from above.

After about an hour of preparation, the priests take positions around the summoning circle. They begin chanting very quietly, and you can tell they're all saying the same thing, though you can't understand the words. They go on like this for some time, but eventually they begin speaking louder and have a blank look in their eyes, as if they're not quite there.

After a few minutes of this louder chanting, the floor begins to shake and you see a stone hand emerge from the circle, and then another, and a huge elemental pulls itself out of the stone floor and moves to stand outside the circle. This repeats over and over until 14 elementals stand in the room with you. The chanting ends and the priests slump in exhaustion and look like they could sleep for a week.

The lead priest stands, "We'd best get back home so we can deal with these slimes," he says and is picked up by one of the elementals for transport and you start on your way back to Blingdenstone.

"That sure was something" Elfog murmurs to himself after quietly, and intently watching the ceremony. As they being their journey back to Blingdenstone he notices Hunter fidgeting with her equipment.

"Aye, good idea! Even with these stone 'mentals, I got a feeling we still in for a fight."
Oct 12, 2016 9:47 pm
The trip back to Blingdenstone is relatively uneventful; who would mess with war party of earth elementals? Once you get back, plans are finalized and you are asked to perform a very important role.

"We are needed to guide the main battle, but someone has to find and kill the leader. We're hoping that the oozes end their attacks once he's dead. We were hoping that once the main host of oozes has been engaged, you all could take one of the elementals and seek out their leader?"
Oct 12, 2016 11:15 pm
"A shrewd plan. You can count on us!"
Oct 12, 2016 11:19 pm
"Please refresh my memory," begins Hunter, "but we don't know what type of person this leader is, yes? Race, occupation, or skills?"

"Ah, yes yes," nods Hunter. "The Goldwhiskers' knowledge may be useful in this regard, then. I will do my best to seek out this Pudding King."
Oct 13, 2016 12:47 am
"I'm sure we can take care of just one enemy, right?" Soliin says with a smile. "Think the elemental will let me ride it?"
Oct 13, 2016 12:53 am
Hunter smiles. "Your confidence is appreciated," she says to Soliin. "But, let's not forget that this individual has command of hundreds of oozes and slimes. He must possess power of some mention."
Oct 17, 2016 6:46 pm
"Yes, I'm sure one of the elementals will bear you," Dorbo assures you, "We will even instruct one to go with you on your quest, to help with exterminating this menace."

The mission quickly is started, with many scores of gnomes preparing for a battle, their elemental companions assisting in last-minute preparation. You follow along with the gnomish battle-group and enter the same chamber you tried to use before.

The gnomes rush forward and attempt to overwhelm the oozes as quickly as they can, and Dorbo motions for you to head through a side passage. The elemental immediately starts that way, smashing oozes as it goes. You enter the side passage, which is a wide and winding area. You turn around a twist in the passage, and see a couple of black oozes, about 20 feet in front of you. Behind you, more oozes approach; you can't see them yet, but you can hear their slimy movement down the tunnel behind you.

Soliin joins in the teamwork, drawing his magical blade and going for the oozes spleen, trying for a clean slash to avoid any splash back.

Unless I've forgotten to update my HP, that's -15/36 HP. Which is super dead I think.

EDIT: I checked, I'm within averages for HP.
Oct 21, 2016 6:07 pm
OOC:
In 5e, if you take damage that puts you at 0 or negative, you just go to 0 hit points and fall unconscious. The only time there is instant death is if the remaining damage after 0 equals or exceeds your hit point maximum.

So, from 36 you took 51 points, putting you at 0. The remaining 15 is not more than your maximum hit points. You are just unconscious and will need to make Death Saves.

For further clarification, if you had taken 72 points of damage... 36 - 72 = -36, matching HP maximum, means instant death.

The earth elemental raises both fists, unaware that its halfling rider has fallen off. It slams downward onto the slime.

Hunter fires her crossbow at the remaining slime, her bolt slipping through the fire to ignite the oil.

Seemingly unconcerned with the splashback from the slime, the earth elemental continues its assault.

Soliin, your studded armor has it's AC bonus reduced by one due to the corrosive nature of the oozes.

That was almost too easy! Elfog thinks, disappointed that he only got in a single attack during the battle, but glad that it's over nonetheless.
Oct 26, 2016 3:26 am
Soliin bolts up, legs still splayed in front of him, panting. He looks around, and noticing the ooze leaking around the floor, he quickly crawls backwards, climbing back onto the earth elemental. "I... I don't know if this is the place for me. I can't do this! I should just head back, not get in your ways..."
Oct 26, 2016 3:50 am
"Keep moving. I'll keep you alive, but it's probably a good idea to try not to die."
Oct 26, 2016 6:55 am
"You're likely a better shot with your crossbow than I am," suggests Hunter. "Hang back with me and we'll lend our support for the others at range."
Oct 26, 2016 9:22 pm
"Leave the heavy lifting to me and this one" Elfog responds as he motions to Mai'ngor. "We'll hit 'em up close while you and the others hit 'em from from distance!"
Oct 26, 2016 9:34 pm
You move forward down the tunnel as you can here more ooze approaching from behind you. Before long, they are out of hearing and safely behind you. After a couple more twists and turns in the tunnel you enter a relatively open passage. On the other side of the passage you see a crazed-looking gnome.

The insane, slime-covered deep gnome points at you and cackles."Devour them, my precious children! Make your father proud!" He then bolts as two oozes drop from the ceiling in front of you, their dark forms flowing in your direction with unsettling awareness and malevolence.

Well, you roll vs their passive perception. You won't know for sure that you've succeeded, but you'll have a pretty good idea of how well you've done
Nov 4, 2016 9:38 pm
OOC:
So, what I have so far is Earthy in the ceiling, Mai'ngor, Elfog, and Xeliss (Dire Wolf form) up front, Soliin and Hunter behind?
Nov 4, 2016 9:49 pm
OOC:
Sounds about right to me.
Nov 7, 2016 12:26 am
Hunter nods, sending the earth elemental to cover them from above.
Nov 7, 2016 4:59 pm
You follow the long and winding hallway, where you encounter a few more oozes that are easily dispatched. As you round one corner you come to the Pudding King's chamber. Phosphorescent lichen illuminates this cave, the floor of which is covered in pools of green slime. More green slime clings to the ceiling and forms hideous drapes along the walls. In the middle of the cave, facing east, is a slime covered throne.

The Pudding King cowers behind his slime-covered throne and chortles in his joy. "Callooh! Callay! Now you can join the party!" he cackles. "You can be one with the Faceless Lord. Just let yourselves be eaten and disgorged!"

OOC:
He will go first, being ready for your arrival. His form is slightly blurred by some sort of spell. All attacks against him will be at disadvantage.
Nov 7, 2016 5:23 pm
The Pudding King chants a quick spell and as he finishes, Elfog feels a wave of filthy magic wash over him, sapping his strength. At the same time, a glob of green slime falls from the ceiling to land on Mai'ngor.
OOC:
Elfog, make a Con save (DC 14). If you pass, you take half damage!

Mai'ngor, roll a Dex save (DC 10). If you succeed, you take no damage from the slime.

Your turn!

Nov 7, 2016 5:40 pm
As the slime drops from the cavern ceiling Mai’ngor leaps cleanly out of the way. The tikbalang quickly makes for the throne, putting some distance between himself and the slime. He draws both blades and breathes a prayer to his ancestral wind gods, entreating them to grant him unnatural swiftness.
OOC:
*Bonus action: War Dance
*Action: Dash
*Action Surge: Sinag attack!

The earth elemental's fists reach out of the cavern wall to crush the slime on the ceiling.

Hunter tosses an iron spike into the air, then with a flick of her wrist, sends the spike hurtling through the air towards the Pudding King.
OOC:
Assuming the slime that dripped from the ceiling was an attack from a sentient ooze. Hunter casts Catapult on the iron spike.

The elemental smashes the slime on the ceiling, then realizes that these are not sentient, but are merely commanded by the will of the Pudding King.

Mai'ngor rushes toward the throne as Soliin makes his stealthy way around the chamber.

Hunter's spike flies toward the Pudding King, slicing his shoulder as it flies by, missing impaling him by inches.

The Pudding King cackles and disappears in a flash of light, reappearing 30 feet away and laughing hysterically.

He casts another quick spell and two a large glob of acid goes flying and explodes between Mai'ngor and Elfog.
OOC:
Mai'ngor, Elfog, each of you need to make a DC 14 Dex save or take 2d6 acid damage (rolled below). If you succeed, you take no damage

Now it's back to your turn. Don't forget that all attacks are at disadvantage against him

Rolls

Acid Splash - (2d6)

(36) = 9

Nov 9, 2016 5:54 pm
As the Pudding King sudden appears in front of him, Soliin raises his hands and a burst of vibrant color explodes from his palms at the Pudding King's direction.
OOC:
Casting Color Spray. As this is my first 5e cast, lemme know if I'm screwing it up. As I understand, I only need to roll the 6d10, and since there's only one target, no need to worry about the cone.

EDIT: As soon as I rolled that, I realized that was the wrong spell to use... it's hit points, not hit dice, and given some of us are over 30 HP, this guy definitely is. Wasted spell, oh well.

Soliin's spell goes off and a blinding array of colors spray forth from his hands. The Pudding King puts his fingers over his eyes, "Ahhh! You bastard, what did you do?!" It's the first coherent thing you've heard him say.

The elemental drops down and smashes the throne to pieces, scattering the fragments and ooze with ease.

Hunter's magic missiles slam into the deranged gnome, staggering him backward. The blurring of his shape ends, as he's lost concentration on the spell.
OOC:
Since he is now blind, and no longer under the effects of Blur, you all have ADVANTAGE to hit him until the blindness goes away at the end of Soliin's next turn.

Hunter sweeps her gaze across the chamber, looking for any other threats, even as she ponders the Pudding King's final words. She begins to make her way to the throne and the elemental, and sends a Message to one she hopes is nearby.

1d20+3 : (15) + 3 = 18

It appears that Sarith is too far away to receive your message, because he doesn't respond. Hunter remembers back to her arcane training and remembers that Jubilex, the Faceless Lord, is the demon lord of oozes.

Sinag communicates with Mai'ngor, Things seems safe for now, I can sense no other danger here

Xeliss sniffs around, but isn't able to find any threats nearby.
Nov 9, 2016 9:02 pm
"I am all right," says Hunter. "See if his royal majesty had anything useful in his pockets. I'd like to see what's so special about this chamber that he decided to place his throne here. Afterward, we'll want to join up with the others and inform them that this area is under new management." The sorcerer picks through the shattered stone for any clues as to the nature of the room.

55 gp, 30 ep
A potion
Two scrolls: Conjure Minor Elementals and Speak with plants
a large, varnished eyeball

"May I suggest... not that way!" Soliin quickly bundles the loot into his bag and takes off to the mouth of the other tunnel, waiting there for his companions.

Nov 10, 2016 1:54 am
'Which way? North or south?" asks Hunter, quickly scooping up a bit of slime from the throne into an empty potion bottle and palming a piece of the throne. She stuffs the items into her robes and trains her crossbow down the eastern tunnel where the sound emanates from.
Nov 10, 2016 1:59 am
Elfog readies his axe and rushes towards the eastern tunnel. "See if we can hit 'em before they see us!"
Nov 10, 2016 4:37 pm
As you wait to see what's coming, you see a familiar, spectral figure round the corner. It is the ghost of Burrow Warden Jagder, who was in attendance in the battle planning. "Ah, there you are!" He says, 'walking' over to you, followed by three of the stony creatures that you raised at the Steadfast Stone, the Galeb Duhr, "There are too many of the bastards, Dorbo has sounded a retreat."

He looks around at the chaos for a moment, "Looks like you took care of the leader, eh? Good on you. We'd best be headed back to the city... maybe with their leader dead, we can pick them off little by little and reclaim our city!"
Nov 10, 2016 5:09 pm
Hunter nods, pleased now that the eastern passage is clear. "Plus, I think we have a bounty to claim," she says, referring to the guard captain's offer for the head of a medusa.
OOC:
Assuming we didn't claim it prior to this battle!

Stowing his axe Elfog asks, "Who's still carrying that thing's head?"
Nov 10, 2016 10:32 pm
"Soliin was the last to carry the prize, thanks to his purchase of a suitable bag."
Nov 10, 2016 10:41 pm
"Aye. Let's get on back, drop that thing off, and work out a plan on dealing with these slimes."
Nov 11, 2016 2:42 am
I drop my wolf form and check on Mai'gnor. "Are you going to make it back in one piece?"
Nov 11, 2016 7:27 am
"I will be fine, worry not." the proud tikbalang replies with a forced smile. His skin is burned raw from the acid and part of his mane is scorched off. "Let us be off."
OOC:
I'm at 10/47hp
Nov 11, 2016 4:25 pm
Hunter points Earthy towards Mai'ngor, indicating that the earth elemental should watch over the tikbalang until the group reaches the city. To Burrow Warden Jagder, she looks to the north and south and asks, "Where do those passages lead?"
Nov 11, 2016 4:45 pm
"More ooze-infested tunnels, nothing to concern ourselves with at the moment," Jagder responds, "Like I said, we're withdrawing for now, there's just too many of the slimy bastards."
Nov 11, 2016 4:47 pm
Hunter nods, and prepares to follow the withdrawal.
Nov 14, 2016 6:16 pm
Jagder and his galeb duhr escort you back to Blingdenstone, where you are greeted to thunderous applause. Looking around, you see numerous gnomes wounded, their flesh seared by the oozes that they set out to defeat. You are led back to Diggermattock Hall, where the leaders of the gnomes await your return.

Dorbo stands as you enter, "How did it go?" he immediately asks.

Senni, his wife, glares at him, "Please, have a seat and rest yourselves," she says graciously, then turns to a guard, "Go and fetch Gurnik, it seems our friends here could use some healing."

"I'm sorry," Dorbo says, looking embarrassed, "Please, do sit down and we can speak about what has happened"
Nov 14, 2016 7:07 pm
Soliin sighs, drops his gear weightedly, and basically slumps. "Thanks! I feel like I shook hands with death. Mostly because I shook hands with death." One of his bags rolls a bit, and he gives a weary grin. "You wanted this! Maybe you can make a petrifying helmet out of it!" he exclaims as he throws the bag holding the medusa's head to Dorbo's feet.
Nov 14, 2016 7:49 pm
"We followed the passage indicated by the Goldwhiskers," Hunter begins after she takes a seat, "and soon after encountered the Pudding King. Thanks to your assault and the assistance of the earth and stone, his defenses were much more manageable and we chased him to his throne room. Your kin dealt the final blow." She opens her hand to Xeliss, giving her credit for slaying the leader.

"He spoke of the Faceless Lord; perhaps he had been touched by the abyssal. He also mentioned a Queen of Fungi. I know not what that refers to, but it makes me think of the myconids. Is there something to this, that you are aware of?"

"Faceless Lord? Queen of Fungi?" Dorbo asks, looking to Senni, who looks just as confused as him, "Never heard of either of them. Perhaps Gurnik can shed some light on the subject when he arrives."
Nov 14, 2016 11:21 pm
Taking the offered rest, Elfog sits back and lets out a heavy sigh.

The Faceless Lord? Queen of Fungi? To hell with them! he thinks as his mind fills with thoughts of home.
Nov 15, 2016 3:51 pm
Gurnik shows up minutes later and casts some spells of healing over those of you who are injured, "It's good to see you've returned to us in relatively good health."

Once Gurnik is done praying over you, Dorbo speaks up, "They said that the 'Pudding King' mentioned the 'Faceless Lord' and the 'Queen of Fungi'. Do either of those names mean anything to you?"

Gurnik pales a little bit and swallows hard, "The Faceless Lord likely refers to Jubilex, while the Queen of Fungi may refer to Zuggtmoy. Both of them are powerful demon lords..."

Gurnik shakes his head, "They're supposed to be trapped in the Abyss. If they've reached the Underdark, that means that something terrible has happened. You don't sound too surprised about this, what do you know?"
Nov 15, 2016 4:50 pm
"Before we came here," Hunter begins, tentatively, "we were at the kuo-toa city of Sloobludop. We were returning a fellow prisoner to their homeland... yes, a kuo-toa, captured by the drow of Velkynvelve along with all of us. The city... hm. Well, I'm not sure it stands any longer. A faction of kuo-toa managed to summon The Prince of Demons, Twin-Headed Beast of the Abyss. I dare not speak its name aloud.

"Prior to that, we saw other demons in Velkynvelve. Truly it was their appearance that created enough chaos to allow us escape.

"Now we have The Faceless Lord and the Queen of Fungi. Whatever is happening, I fear an abyssal incursion is imminent, if it's not already here."

EDIT to add:

"Actually, I think I told Lord Diggermattock all this before. Unfortunately, that's all we know, but you see why we're no longer surprised by such news."

"This is all very troubling," Dorbo says, and Senni nods as well, worry apparent on her face, "But still, nothing we can affect for now. I believe that we made a promise to deliver you to the surface, didn't we? We should have the slime well in hand now that they're not organized. We will begin preparations for your return immediately, but in the mean time, please enjoy your stay here."

Gurnik looks to Mai'ngor, "Please, see me before you depart, we have much to speak of."
Nov 16, 2016 10:44 pm
Elfog's face turns white as he remembers the stories once told to him by his grandfather.

"Aye" he says quietly. "The sooner we get out of here the better!"
OOC:
I'll admit that I had to actually look up what that meant.
Nov 16, 2016 11:14 pm
Hunter pauses. "Before I go to the surface," she begins, hesitantly, "how far is it to Neverlight Grove? I should like to see Stool home, but the mention of the Queen of Fungi makes me think something terrible might be waiting. Is it possible to investigate?"
Nov 16, 2016 11:24 pm
"Hmm... let me consult the maps," Dorbo replies, and spends the next several minutes calculating the time it would take, before finally shaking his head, "Could take near to two weeks, depending on what you run into out there."

Before depression can set in, Gurnik speaks up, waving a hand in dismissal, "There are dozens of Myconid colonies scattered throughout the Underdark. The chances of it being this specific one are very slim."
OOC:

He shakes his head in frustration, "'course the mushroom wouldn't stand a chance getting home alone now would he..."
Nov 16, 2016 11:32 pm
"We can help you take him home, or we can find time to deliver him once things calm down a bit here," Senni suggests, "He doesn't eat much and some of the children have found him to be absolutely fascinating, so he's no trouble here."

Nov 17, 2016 7:02 pm
Hunter isn't able to recall much lore regarding this specific facet of Myconid biology. They tend to be very close-mouthed with their way of life, preferring to keep it among themselves.
Nov 17, 2016 7:06 pm
Soliin stands and walks up to the bag he threw earlier. Leaning over, he pokes it and looks up at his hosts. "You guys wanted this medusa head, right? What are you going to do with it?"
Nov 17, 2016 7:11 pm
"I know that Sark, over at the guard post, was looking into a possible medusa, yes. I'll have him brought here to double check everything later. If you've got what he's looking for, we'll be sure that he rewards you properly."
Nov 17, 2016 7:14 pm
"Either way, it's going to take a little while to organize any trip. Why don't you make yourselves comfortable and enjoy your stay before we get you home?" Dorbo says.
OOC:
You will have a few days to do whatever you want to do, and make any decisions regarding Stool.
Nov 17, 2016 7:41 pm
Hunter decides to ask Stool specifically about what happens between different myconid groups, should the sprout need to find a new home. "Is that something you could do? Or do you need to rejoin your original family? Whichever you decide, I will see you there."
Nov 17, 2016 7:43 pm
"It can be done, but it doesn't happen often. I would prefer to return to my own home, surely," Stool says, speaking to Hunter telepathically, "I have been gone away too long."

For Hunter, it is settled. She will remain in Blingdenstone for as long as it takes before the svirfneblin can take Stool home, and accompany them.

"I don't wish any of you to stay on our account," Hunter says to the others after she explains why Stool must go to Neverlight Grove. "The gnomes know the way to the surface, so you are set to go home."
Nov 17, 2016 8:02 pm
"What's another few weeks? The gnomes may know a way to the surface from wherever we drop Tool off too, so I'll stick around."
Nov 18, 2016 3:35 am
"As much as I long to see the sky once again I would be glad to spend some more time learning from the gnomes of Blingdenstone. And I have an appointment to keep with Gurnik. If you'll excuse me I will rejoin you all later." Mai’ngor bows to Dorbo and heads for the Speaking Stones, anxious to hear what the priest has learned about his sky-stone.

Hunter nods. "I appreciate it," she says, "and I'm sure Stool does, as well. Let's see about that bounty."
Nov 18, 2016 5:49 pm
I'm not going to leave without them, so the decision has been made. "Maybe while we're here we should learn more about those demon lords, just to be safe?"

Bounty
You head to Sark, the guard captain, and present him with your 'trophy'. After inspecting it for a brief moment, he nods in satisfaction, "Looks like a Medusa to me! I suppose you've earned your reward," he says, "I'll have them deliver it to you where you are staying."

Tomorrow morning, you wake up to find a delivery of 200 gp each.

Speaking Stones
Mai'ngor heads over to speak to the priest, Gurnik. As you enter, he walks over, "Ah, yes. I was hoping you'd come sooner rather than later."

He fishes the stone out of a pouch he has on him and hands it over, "I can't tell its exact origin, but it's not of this plane. It's full of powerful magic, on top of being a fabulous receptacle for the stuff. The high levels of magic are probably what led to the death of your tribe, but it may also have been something else, as I don't sense any malignant energy in the stone. Likely, if you found a powerful spellcaster, they could fashion this into an item of great power."

Hunter looks to purchase some healing potions, hoping that the market or temple still carry a supply after the great battle. The group came very close to dying out in the caverns and the sorcerer was powerless to help in any way.

If she is able, she has the piece of the Pudding King's throne appraised to determine what kind of stone it is. She goes so far as to ask Elfog for his expertise. She does not think it would be obsidian, and if not, Hunter looks for the material at the market, along with a small trinket of a tiny hand carved from clay.

She also visits an alchemist to see if her sample of green slime might prove any use.

After her shopping trip, Hunter avails herself to the svirfneblin and help in any way possible.

"Great power is often more a curse than a boon, I find." Mai’ngor murmurs as Gurnik returns the stone fragment. "The so-called Pudding King was one such who craved and was devoured by power, was he not? And yet, power tempered by true wisdom..." the tikbalang gestures at the Ghaleb Duhr, "...such power keeps the evil at bay. What of these demon lords? Is the world in danger?"
Nov 21, 2016 8:53 pm
Speaking Stones
Gurnik's expression turns bleak at the mention of the demon lords, "Yes... the world could very well be in danger. The power of the demon lords is nearly unparalleled. We can merely hope that someone finds a way to seal them back in their abyssal prison."

Hunter Shopping
There are a couple of healing potions left for sale. All of the others have been taken for use on the gnome forces. The cost will be the same as the standard PHB price.
OOC:
You have an arcane focus, so you actually don't need material components, unless they have a price attached to them
"Hmm... a wondrous sample indeed..." the alchemist says, inspecting the green slime, "Yes, this could be very useful in designing a countermeasure to the oozes. Your assistance could assist in eliminating the threat completely and I thank you for that."

The gnomes gladly take you up on your offer of help, specifically taking advantage of your ability to mold earth and construct additional fortifications.
Nov 21, 2016 10:38 pm
OOC:
Hunter looks for material components as a backup, in case she's ever robbed of her arcane focus. Being a prisoner of the drow sorta sealed that deal for her.
Hunter purchases the two healing potions, hoping it will be a long time before they are needed.
Nov 22, 2016 8:58 pm
I search for some form of library where I can learn more about the dangers here, specifically the lore surrounding these demon lords. Perhaps they can be re-trapped before they get too far?
Nov 22, 2016 9:03 pm
Hunter is easily able to find the components she needs (go ahead and buy a component pouch at half price).

Xeliss is very frustrated to find that they don't have a library, "Books aren't a good idea to bring on a reclamation mission, lass!" one gnome says to her when she asks.
Nov 23, 2016 3:05 pm
"I gazed upon the two-headed one. A nightmare I do not care to repeat." Mai'ngor shudders, then gazes at the stone menhirs, with even more wonder now that he has witnessed the power of the galeb duhr. He then turns his attention to the small stone shard in his hand. "A powerful spellcaster, you say? Might there be one such in Blingdenstone?"
Nov 23, 2016 4:10 pm
Gurnik shakes his head, "Our strengths lie mostly in the priestly arts. The few wizards that we have dabble in mostly illusions, a good way to distract foes who wander near our home. The most powerful wizards in the Underdark are in Menzoberranzan, the city of the drow, though I hear that there are many powerful wizards among the surface races as well."
Nov 23, 2016 4:19 pm
"Curse the drow, I'll go to the abyss before I go to Menzoberranzan! Mai’ngor growls. "Yes, perhaps it is time my companions and I returned to the surface. I shall be sorry to depart Blingdenstone, friend Gurnik. Your people have shown me there is purity and light to be found in the Underdark. Farewell.
Nov 23, 2016 10:40 pm
"Farewell, noble warrior. Perhaps we will meet again," Gurnik says with a bow.
Nov 25, 2016 4:04 am
"No books? How about maps?" Hmmph. Useless.
Nov 25, 2016 4:44 pm
"Of course we have maps! Hard to navigate the Underdark without them! What you looking for?"
Nov 25, 2016 4:50 pm
Having taken his leave of Gurnik at the Speaking Stones, Mai'ngor tries to recall another name that was given him by Dorbo. "What was it again?...That's it, Kazook Pickshine at the Trader's Grotto." The tikbalang decides to seek this person out. He asks for directions passers-by for directions.
Nov 25, 2016 6:25 pm
It doesn't take long for Mai'ngor to find Kazook at his shop, "What can I do for you?" he greets you when you approach.
Nov 25, 2016 7:02 pm
"Good day to you, Master Pickshine! I am Mai'ngor." the tikbalang says with a bow. "If I may take up a moment of your time, Master Dorbo said you might offer some insight regarding this." Mai'ngor holds up the stone shard.
Nov 25, 2016 7:04 pm
Kazook takes the shard, "Well well well... this is like nothing I've ever seen before. Where'd you get it?"
Nov 25, 2016 7:26 pm
"It is a piece of a large, flaming rock that fell from the sky and destroyed my village. Afterwards, everyone died of a wasting disease. All but me. It is my only keepsake of my home."
OOC:
What sort of shop is the Trader's Grotto?
Nov 25, 2016 8:23 pm
OOC:
Trader's Grotto is actually the name of a cavern with a whole bunch of small shops
Nov 25, 2016 9:20 pm
OOC:
Ah. Well, going window shopping after talking to Kazook then.
Nov 28, 2016 5:48 pm
Kazook hands the stone back to Mai'ngor, "Can't say that I'd know anything about it, I deal mostly with precious ore and gems, not cursed rocks. I'm sorry that I can't give you more than that, but I wish you the best."
Nov 28, 2016 9:09 pm
Mai'ngor takes back the stone shard. "Am I correct in assuming that this rock is unlike anything one would find underground?"
Nov 28, 2016 9:40 pm
"I've been down here a long time and I've never seen anything like it, so that's a safe bet I think."
Nov 28, 2016 9:57 pm
Mai'ngor nods and puts the stone away. "You've been most helpful, thank you. The tikbalang looks about the shop curiously. Now what is it that you sell here besides gems and such?"
Nov 28, 2016 10:21 pm
"Mostly gems and fine jewelry, but I also manage trade with other places in the Underdark," Kazook says, "Gracklstugh, Mithral Hall, even Menzoberranzan on occasion."
Nov 30, 2016 5:16 am
Hunter seems to find time to window-shop here, eyeing the gemstones and jewelry while keeping her hands behind her back.
Nov 30, 2016 10:59 am
Mai'ngor's face darkens. "Menzoberranzan? You trade with the filthy drow?"
Nov 30, 2016 10:43 pm
Where the hell is everyone? Mushroom ain't gonna get itself home!
Nov 30, 2016 10:49 pm
"They have a great number of goods that can't be gotten here. Of course we do so through so many people that they'd never know it's us they're selling to," Kazook says proudly.
Nov 30, 2016 11:09 pm
"Maps. To where we're going." How many maps could there be?
Dec 1, 2016 10:19 pm
"Maps to the surface, you mean? Or to the grove?"
Dec 3, 2016 12:14 am
Mai’ngor shrugs. Who is he to judge? Didn't he often criticize his own father's isolationism, urging the chieftain to establish relations with neighboring elvish settlements?

Nodding, he asks Kazook, "What sort of rare goods does Menzoberranzan trade in?"
Dec 3, 2016 12:41 am
Xeliss
The gnome considers for a moment, "You want to take one of our maps? I'm afraid that can't be allowed, of course. Though if you do want to help me make a copy, I suppose we could do that much, considering what a great help you and your companions have been," he says, pulling tubes out of a box nearby and then sticking them back until he comes to the one he wants.

He carefully opens it and pulls out an old map, unrolling it and placing paperweights set with large rubies on the table to hold it down. Even looking at the thing is dizzying, with its multitudes of crisscrossing passageways and a very confusing legend written into the bottom corner.

Mai'ngor
"Weapons, heavily enchanted for killing. Armor, unsurpassed except by the most talented of dwarven smiths. Scrolls, exotics foods, perfumes... most anything you can think of, they have it or can get it," he says, shrugging, "Vicious and evil as they are, they craft some of the most beautiful works of art, and have exotic tastes and a varied selection."

Elfog
As you wait patiently in your room, an odd lizard makes its way halfway across the floor before sitting down and staring at you. It stands about a hand high and has distinctive red stripes running up and down its back.

Hunter
Hunter sees many beautiful pieces of jewelry, interspersed among a variety of more practical items. Vials, mortars, pestles, even an occasional book.
Dec 3, 2016 1:03 am
"What do you want?" Elfog grunts, staring back at the lizard.
Dec 3, 2016 1:10 am
Mai'ngor nods, recalling Shoor Vandree's weapons and the other drowcraft sword he now bears. He changes the subject somewhat: "Trade here has not seemed to suffer despite Blingdenstone's troubles of late." he says, gesturing around Trader's Grotto.
Dec 3, 2016 2:03 am
Mai'ngor
"Ahh yes, but these are all contracts I had in place before we began reclaiming the city. It wasn't easy to relocate everything here, but I did it because my people could use the supplies, you see," Kazook explains, "most of the wares here come through one of my contacts."

Elfog
The lizard sits down, similar to how a dog would and cocks its head to the side, making a sound that is a passable imitation of your grunt.
Dec 3, 2016 3:04 am
Her break done, Hunter returns to her tasks assisting the gnomes with their projects.
Dec 3, 2016 4:44 am
Interest piqued, Elfog leans forward towards the lizard and puts his hand on the ground, palm up.
Dec 3, 2016 4:53 am
Elfog
The lizard walks up and cocks its head at Elfog's hand, then seems to think for a moment. Once it's done, it climbs up into his hand.
Dec 3, 2016 9:46 pm
"What kinda lizard are you?"

It's not any type of lizard you have seen before, probably a native of the underdark.
Dec 3, 2016 11:44 pm
Elfog will slowly hold the lizard up to his shoulder to see if it will stay in place. Either way the impatient dwarf heads off to find the others.
Dec 5, 2016 5:05 pm
"Elfog," remarks Hunter, pausing on an errand from one chamber to another. She shifts the box in her arms as she practices her broken Dwarvish, "How you well?"
Dec 5, 2016 5:26 pm
The lizard settles in on Elfog's shoulder and stays where it is as he begins to look for the others.
Dec 6, 2016 11:24 pm
The broken Dwarvish throws Elfog for a moment as he tries to determine exactly what it is Hunter is asking. "Oh! Yes, yes, I'm good."

He tilts his head toward the lizard on his shoulder, "What ya think of my new friend?"
Dec 6, 2016 11:28 pm
Hunter tilts her head, as though noticing the lizard for the first time. "Interesting. Where that buy?" She studies the creature, trying to place where she might have seen it before.

Dec 6, 2016 11:45 pm
Hunter has never seen a lizard like this, though she strains herself really good trying to think.
Dec 6, 2016 11:53 pm
"Huh. Maybe gnome know," says Hunter.
Dec 7, 2016 3:30 am
"Aye. Good thinking" Elfog agrees. "Going to need a name for 'im if he plans on making the trip with us" the dwarf says with a slight grin.
Dec 11, 2016 6:30 pm
"Your names can lizard Beard," suggests Hunter with a smirk.
Dec 13, 2016 4:03 am
I attempt to copy as much of the map as possible, or at least one of the easier looking paths towards out destination.

We should have a party! Wouldn't the deep gnomes want to celebrate the defeat of the Pudding King, at least?
