The Star of Helia
Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.
Some of you (at least those who can read) will either have noticed an announcement on the public board, or will have heard a town crier announce that Arla, the head priestess of the small shrine of Helia here in tow, is looking for a band of adventurers.
Today she has taken a day off from her lessons to hang around the inn and see who might show up to answer the head priestess’s posting and see if her talents may be of use. If so, and assuming the head priestess allows one of the temple’s students to join her band of adventurers, maybe she can make use of the opportunity to put her talents to use and make some coin at it as well. She stands at the edge of the crowd, watching a man perform card tricks. A rat sits on her shoulders nibbling at a lock of her tangled hair, while she absentmindedly fidgets at a padlock with a pick in her hand.
Feridir walks closer to him and gives a small cough to grab his attention.
The vieuw is bettter inside master dwarf.
You now see a tall elf with a longbow standing behind you, long hair and a friendly smile on his face.
If you want you can join me inside make a great entrance together, while I look for Helia as she is seeking for adventurers
"I 'ear recently that Arla, the head priestess o' Helia here in town was lookin' fer adventurers. Maybe you should try there my good dwarf friend."
Eventually, a human woman who looks to be in her late 30s, dressed in the white robes of a priestess and adorn with another stylized sun emblem on her vestments enters the room and greets you, thanking you for your patience.
"Hello there adventurers. Sorry to have kept you waiting, but as the head priestess of this temple, my days can be quite busy, even though this is but an humble small shrine in a small town... Well, I should stop wasting your time with tales of my priestly obligations now and get straight to the point, I suppose. The reason I need adventurers is because I need to have the ruins of an old temple of Helia located on Bear Peak in the middle of the Dawn Woods explored. After pouring through ancient texts, I have reason to believe that an ancient relic of the fait of Helia, thought lost to us centuries ago, might still be residing there. Bear Peak is roughly 38 kilometres away (a little over 23.5 miles) as the crow flies. But moving through hunting trails will definitely take longer."
Then, with a bit of nervousness she concludes.
"As for reward, I'm afraid being a small shrine located in such a small town, we do not have much to offer you beside the gratitude of the church of Helia and the town of Cendor, I'm sure I could scrounge up a small purse of gold pieces if you are the kind of adventurers who work for money. So, will you accept the job?"
Having completed the mental gymnastics necessary to justify ditching her lessons to go adventuring without guilt, she decides the best course of action now would be to just remain silent, avoid drawing the priestess’s attention, and simply fall in step with the whomever decides to go. She’ll tag along, unlock some old treasure chest, save the day, earn the accolades of all the rest of the party, and come back to Cendor to collect her bounty. Then when the priestess says in surprise, "You did all this and basically recovered the artifact by yourself? But you’re too young to adventure," she’ll reply, "It’s a bit late for that now, isn’t it? Pay up, please!"
"Yes, this will all work out nicely," Kanyil thinks...
The dwarven priest will chime in.
"Weel, Ah dae hae fower days ay scran. Ah suppose we coods aye hunt oan th' way."
The priestess continues.
"Hmm, it should take you at the very least two days to get there and two days to get back... I'll see if we can spare some food, consider this a downpayment for your service."
"Awrite, mah nam is Barekeln, war priest ay Cur, Laird ay th' dwarves."
"Aw stoatin joorneys begin wi' a first step brither dwarf."
The others could take their pay advances in the form of dinner bundles, but she was gonna receive all her recompense in the form of coin when this was through.
Well payment would be good, and provisions would be nice, I wont require much as, deeds this retrival will find me and maybe my newfound companions some extra work, but most of all fame
He looks towards the dwarf that he encounterd at the beginning,
My appologies Master dwarf for not anwesering your question earlier, but it would be rude for me to interupt other people, being around many people is part of an adventurers job, so go with the flow but keep your eyes open.
He takes a step backwards and bows towards the group
The name is Feridir, at your service, Adventurer in the making
He stands up straight again looking at the group.
So when are we leaving?
Shen then summons a servant and assigns him to find some food for the party.
If so we will soon be heroes.
"It would seem we could afford 5 days worth of food for you. This should be of some help. Also, I have a map of the Dawn Wood and its hunting trails here which should help you navigating the forest."
@ everyone else: As you were about to split the food the priestess brought you, you suddenly hear a commotion coming from where you entered the temple. Eventually, the source of the commotion become apparent to you as an elf wearing the brown robes of a mage bursts into the room with all haste, looking a bit out of breath, pursued by servants yelling "No, the priestess is busy, you cannot enter!"
"We can use all the help we can get," whispers Eldritch to Ulfgar, "And this elf has the look of a wizard about him, very useful in adventuring circles."
Aha another companion to join us in our Quest, the more the merrier, now enough with all this dilly dalling time to get on with our adventure
Lost yet again in an old book of incantations he had been booted twice in the shin before it finally sunk in that the burly butcher standing over him was trying to tell him yet again that the party he was to meet had left quite some time ago and was probably long gone. Jumping up, Avente' took off in a frantic run toward the temple.
Robe flying, still stuffing the old book into his pack, Avente' tries to speak.
"Wait! hff hff"
"I am hff hff"
"Elf hff hff"
"Avente' hff hff"
"Wizard by trade hff hff"
"Going with hff hff"
Avente' drops to his knees and tries wholeheartedly not to pass out.
"Och, we shoods bide troaps, th' elf mage seems tae hae difficulty keepin' up wi' us."
And he motions for the rest of the group to start going out the city towards were we need to go to
"My apologies for keeping you all from the task at hand. I will do my best to not be a burden in the future and pray that I may actually prove my worth to you. My name is Avante' Dahn. I practice in the wizarding arts and, well, I read quite a bit. I hope to learn as much as possible of the world and the secrets it holds.I believe I am indeed ready to depart."
"Since I have not met with the priestess yet, perhaps you might give me the condensed version of our task as we travel?"
Having no education in hunting, or navigating, or any skills like that, Kanyil doesn’t bother volunteering to take lead at reading the map.

If Feridir finds a suitable tree he climbs fashions himself a something he can use to hold him when he sleeps in the tree and has his bow at the ready

Edit: To make things easier, I'll note the DEF of monsters you'll encounter so you can roll them on the same post as you make your attack, that way it will make combat go a bit faster as you wont have to wait for me to see if the enemies defended themselves from an attack. I'll also do this with the DEF of PCs when rolling a monster's attack.

Two orcs run screaming at Ulfgar, unfortunately, moving through the underbrush means it cost them a double move and they cannot charge (attack) Ulfgar this round. The third one will attempt to throw his spear at Feridir in the three (since he was talking to Ulfgar, the orc has a good idea where he is...).
The orc misses and must go gather his spear if he wants to keep fighting.
Feridir is up next. Your higher ground grants you a +1 to attack. The orc's DEF is 14.

So in this case, you successfully rolled under your Ranged Attack CTN by rolling a 2. That means you will do 2 Damage. The Orc unsuccessfully rolled under their Defense CTN, so they didn’t defend against any of those two Hit Points of Damage.
The idea in combat is you want to roll as close to your Attack CTN as you can without going over, because your roll Result is also how much damage you do if successful. In your case, your character should hope to roll as close to 17 as possible, but not go over which would result in a fail. The only exception to this rule is rolling a natural "1". If you roll a natural "1" you rolled a "Coup". If you rolled a Coup, you immediately do maximum damage (in Feridir’s case, maximum damage is a 17, because that’s his Attack CTN), plus you get to roll another attack and if you roll under his CTN again, you add that damage to the 17 already applied. If you happen to roll another "1", same thing: another 17 Damage is added to the first 17, and you roll again. If you roll a Coup but fail your second attack roll, you Attack is still successful with the 17 Damage for your target to defend against.
So ideally you want to roll a natural "1" on any attack. Failing that, you want to roll as close to your CTN as possible without going over.
In your case, you did 2 Hit Points damage to the Orc. Plus you get a Slayer Point if the GM is using Slayer Points.

@ funfungi: You played a bit too fast. After successfully waking up, you have a free Perception check (no modifiers) to see if you catch your bearings or if you're groggy from just being woken up. If you succeed, you can act normally, if not, you are considered to have delayed your action as per p.41.
@ everyone else: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, we'll be using the optional Slaying Dice and Slayer Points optional rules on p.43. So since Feridir has harmed the orc, he gains a Slayer Point. Monsters can use Slaying Dice but not Slayer Points.
@ funfungi: correct.

Seeing his buddy get killed like that, teh last orc decides that losing his spear is far preferrable then losing his life and performs a double move to run as far away as possible from you. This fight is officially over, unless you want to shoot at the remaining fleeing orc... (I can simply have a few rounds of "soft combat" where people with the range to shoot at the orc can take a few potshots. Standard range penalty is -1 per 10m, except for Kanyil's sling which is -1 per 2m, for spells check your range to see if you can still shoot at the orc; I do believe they should be something along the line of IN x 5m...)
You can catch your breath, regaining half of your just lost HP at a rate of 1 per minute while resting. Now the XP and the loot. In this case you succeeded your attack by rolling a 9 when your Target number was 14 or less. So that’s 9 Damage. The rat had to roll a 5 or less to defend against any of that damage, but they failed, so they didn’t get to subtract the result of their roll from the 9 Hit Points you scored. If they rat had rolled a "4", they would have succeeded their Defense roll and could subtract their roll of 4 from the Damage you rolled.
So the idea on combat tests, regardless of whether you are attacking or defending, is to roll as close to your Target Number as possible without going over, because the result of your roll is the Hot Point damage to you cause or defend against respectively. The only thing better than Rolling equal to your Target Number henbwould Be Rolling a "1", which is a coup. Rolling a Coup means you rolled successfully, do as much damage as your Target Number, and get to roll again to hopefully succeed again and add that to your first roll’s result.

But out of combat, like where our party is now, we have time to recover, loot bodies, discuss plans and strategies, etc., and time isn’t pressing us. So in theory, if it takes five seconds to cast a spell, a spellcaster should get about 12 attempts per minute, and if the party is recovering and regrouping and looting and messing around for five minutes, a spellcaster would basically get sixty rolls to succeed in Healing the party back up and or whatever. Making the player roll 12 times for however many minutes we catch our breath or loot bodies or eat lunch or whatever seems pointless.
I’ve always played it that if it’s during combat, spellcaster rolls are really important because time is of the essence. Outside of combat, the spellcaster is assumed to just patch everyone up in preparation for dangers to come. For roleplaying purposes it can be assumed that the spellcaster probably botched a few rolls in the process of healing the party, but as time wasn’t pressing, they eventually succeed enough times for everyone to heal.
If there was some hidden enemy approaching or planning to attack them unawares, then the spellcaster s might not have enough time to patch everyone up, so the GM May require the player to make a limited amount f rolls according to how much time the party has before they’re attacked or in-game turn order becomes relevant again.
Just my two cents. That’s about a size accurate as you can get from the 4th Edition rulebook.

He bows and then sits next to her while the party heals and burries the dwarf.
Might i ask, why do you use a sling and not a bow? Bows seem a more effective weapon compared to a sling.
He holds his bow and balances it in his hand.
We Eleves know a lot of things about archery, and there is no better bow then an elven bow, and not to be disrespectfull but at your size you probable could only wield a short bow, and with the sling you can be effective, but the weapon is only a part of the battle, your skill is also a big part, and taking aim is a big part, for me its second naturte to fire quick, but for you it mightr be better to take aim before shooting, your small so use that to your advantage, and if were in town ill help you bow shopping

The priestess was a bit reticent at first as it would mean sending you alone in the Dawn Woods which are not exactly safe... but you insisted and she relented. She explained that through research, she had good reason to believe that an ancient relic of her faith, called the Star of Helia, was located in the ruins of an old temple dedicated to Helia located on Bear Peak. She needed a group of adventurers to go and retrieve it for her.
She gave you a map, some food for you to ration on the way there and sent you on your way. Trekking through the forest, you first met an hopelessly lost elf wizard named Avan'te who was originally part of the expedition, but later got cold feet and left to get back to Cendor after an orc attack during the night. You gave him directions back to Cendor and continued on your way. Later, the discovery of the old campsite and orc bodies confirmed you you were on the right way. Eventually, you found the tracks of two other people (Devin and Woodroya) which were rather easy to follow towards a mountain visible far off... While ascending a path up the mountain, you met another former member of the expedition, the NPC dwarf Barekeln who was bringing back the body of his fallen dwarf comrade Grapthor who died in combat against giant rats. Barekeln told you you were on the right way to the ruined temple and warned you to the presence of goblins outside... or at least you think that's what he said, his thick dwarven accent making him hard to understand at times. And so, you continue your ascension of the mountain.

I would select a target square, count all the targets in that square, and adjacent squares, add that number as a bonus to my attack CTN, if the hit is successful, the target hit is then decided randomly (I assume by a GM die roll?).
So, if I were to select the target square to be the one north of Devin, I would get +8 to my attack CTN (all 7 rats, and Devin), or do diagonal squares count as well? In which case the attack bonus becomes +10, and NetDraeth and Feridir also become potential targets?
This means that if you were to shoot at the rats in front of Devin as a turmoil, you'd get a total of +13 to your check (well, +14 really, but I assume you cannot hit yourself, so) because everyone is within 1 meter of the nearest combatant. You'd then have 7 chance out of 13 to hit a rat and 6 chances out of 13 to hit an ally. Also, if thanks to the turmoil bonus you rilled damage higher than your current maximum, it would be adjusted back down to what your current maximum damage is (barring a Coup). This is because you're not really aiming at the rat, you're just aiming at the big mass of combattants before you.

Rats are Tiny size, this mean you'll have a -4 penalty to your attack and spells rolls to attack them and they have a +4 bonus on their attack rolls to attack you.
If Romana (or any other ranged attacker for that matter, we don't know how the fight will progress...) wants to attack a rat adjacent to her with her targeted spells, she will take the -2 penalty for attacking an adjacent target with a ranged attack.
To avoid waisting too much time waiting for me to roll the rat's DEF after each of your attacks, you will roll the rat's DEF while attacking them (and I will roll your DEF while the rats attack you).

Victory!
Everyone gains 52 XP.
Those who were here since the beginning, tell me how much XP you have. I'll put everyone at the same XP total to make things easier. This mean everyone should be hitting level 2 now.
Also, after the battle, you can catch your breath, regaining half of the HP you lost during this battle, at a rate of 1 HP per minute.
Kalajel: I took 15 hits from the rats, when I Catch My Breath, do I round up or down? Also, XP-wise, I'm only at 52, so still level 1 (unless the GM is feeling reeeaally generous... *wink, wink). :)
Also, XP-wise, some people are replacing other players who were here since the beginning, pretending their characters would have been the ones who left all along. This would mean they would have participated in previous fights.
I just felt it was just simpler to put everyone at the same XP total.
Feridir then speaks.
"Oh no, the little one. Perhaps if I hurry, I can catch Barekeln who's carrying Grapthor's corpse. I'll leave you the map so you can find your way back to Cendor."
Netdraeth says as he's kneeling gathering up his gear.
"I do not know. But she is from Cendor. I assume that if I bring back her body there, her family will do what must be done."
Netdraeth goes into the room with shield up and club at the ready.

My intention when I suggested shuffling the party around was to have the melee member's make a line across the door, allowing all three to target the lead ant (one directly, two diagonally), but allowing only one ant per round to make an attack against our party (since they'd be stacked in the hall), this would then also allow Romana and Berryn to shoot fire beams with minimal penalties. Seeing how that didn't work, I'll move Berryn behind Netdraeth, leaving a space for Romana to move to after her attack as well.
